I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I was being helped by Quads on the norton community. I know he helps out here too. Quads was helping me but I screwed up, thought I was helping to save time(yes, I know I saved you alot of time now) but I did not follow complete instructions.

This is what was done so far

OTL scan was run

adwcleaner was run

had adwcleaner delete all and reboot

ran combofix

when computer was rebooting it got stuck on the black screen for about an hour

Had to restart it again and when it did it restored to a previous date

This is where I screwed up

Since it was a previous date it seemed like nothing had taken place, no downloads on the desktop.

Ran the otl scan again

adwcleaner again, log looked the same as first time so I deleted all again

Ran combofix and rebooted and it gave me a log

That is where I am stuck, I dont know whether to leave these downloads on the computer, delete them

I dont think that Quads is going to help me anymore since I messed up, so I was wondering if anyone else could help. I just really want to finish what was started. The computer was stuck on the black screen this morning and finally got it restarted after about 5 times. But I do think there is some kind of virus. Still have adwcleaner and combofix downloaded on the computer. Dont know if I should delete them or what.

Hello, originally my problem is that my internet browsers (Internet explorer, firefox) can not display any kind of pages because of some kind of virus. Also I had some kind of fake Microsoft Security Essentials (MSE) asking me to download more fake AV's onto my computer but I knew well enough that it was fake so I close it. This also shows up in safe mode. MSE block me from opening things such as iexplorer.exe or sometimes it would say tskmanager is a virus and it wouldn't let me open anything. So eventually I google this up, and I read somewhere that told me to rename hotfix.exe to hotfix1.exe when I run %APPDATA% so the annoying MSE would stop showing up. It also told me to update my Malwarebyte which I still can not do because I still do not have access to the internet. By the way I am using another computer to type this. So again, I tried to do some more research to fix my internet problem and I found this site that told me to download KillGodzilla.exe and run it and reboot my computer, after that I should update my Malwarebyte but of course, I can't do that because after the WINDOWS loading screen, the blue log in screen doesn't show and displays a black screen which flickers sometimes, after a few minutes it would restart my computer. Also same thing for safe mode. Does anyone know what is going on? Did I screw up my computer to badly? Do I need to reset my BIOS? I am using Windows XP if that helps. I also hav ESET smart security on my computer but I can... Read more

I am thinking the computer is slow because the driver or video card or something is not working right.  My problem is.  I had this Lenovo computer for a couple of years now.  I just bought a 23" HP S2331a  flat screen monitor.  What do you need to know for me to be able to fix the problem I am having?  The information on the side of the tower is 3000 H210 57091130, Intel GMA3100 graphics.  I am not sure why the computer is doing what is it doing, but I hope you can help me more than HP. The black screen issue happens on startup.  I can see things on the screen up until the login screen attempts to come up and then the screen does not recognize a signal.  I bypass this currently by connecting the old crt screen on until I log in.  Then reconnect the HP screen and wahlah it works.  I can't change the resolution or anyhting like that...... Any thoughts on corredting this so I cna have a working monitor and not have to keep the old crt unit around on startup?Mark

A friend of mine started having a problem with his old dual core computer where the computer seemed like it was booting up but the screen stayed black. This started when he got back from a weeks vacation and found out he lost power in his house. The power was back on when he got home but he could tell with clock being wrong, and neighbors telling him about the outage. He leaves his computer on all the time and when he got home he saw that it was off. When he booted up the only thing he could get was a screen with the XFX logo from the maker of his Geforce GTX 460 video card. Sometimes he wouldn't even get that, just a black screen.
He also connects his usb keyboard in the front and hit the connect to his computer and bent up the keyboard usb connector. I got him another keyboard and replaced the PSU thinking maybe with the power outage the PSU was effected. The computer seemed to boot up and work. Problem is it only worked for about a day (he played video games all day). That night he started with the problem again of black screen.
I thought maybe it was the motherboard then ( the system is an older dual core from 2007), so he purchased the following:

SKU: 6835451
Windows 8 64-bit
Technical details: 3rd Gen Intel® Core? i5 processor; 8GB memory; 1TB hard drive

Re: Screen goes black. Bought new computer and installed video card and still screen

If a new computer begins to exhibit behavior from the old one, I'd remove the commonalities between the both.

You really should have tested the new computer with the onboard GPU and PSU first. Now you need to remove those two and put it back to the original config and test it.

It is also possible that the PSU isn't enough for the video card, if it is multirail and 450W, or low quality PSU. However, it seems more likely if that was the cause, the computer would shut off, not go to a black screen.

Last night I downloaded a file from a Torrent site - Blackberry stuff (I'm pretty sure most or all was freeware stuff). I just noticed that that file has been removed. Kinda unfortunately because I did leave a comment on what happened to me and I asked if anyone else had the same issue. I'm guessing maybe they did because it is gone now.

I ran my AVG scan on it before opening it. It didn't find anything so I ran the executable. It locked up at one point after I started getting virus warnings from some new program (I did not write down what any of it was :-( ).

I had to do a hard shutdown. When it came up to my choices window, i.e. choose Safe Mode, Last Know, etc. I was unable to make any selections with my keyboard so it continued to boot Windows normally. The XP splash screen comes on and then the screen turns black with nothing further happening.

I can do a hard reboot but I can't get into Safe Mode because the keyboard isn't working and normal windows isn't working either.

Got any suggestions? Do I have some serious funk? Did some piece of hardware decide to stop functioning properly (power supply)?

I have been Googling this issue without any success. Sometimes it feels like you are the only one to ever have a particular issue.

This happened very late last night and now I am at work so I'm not able to touch it for the next 5 hours or so. The only two things that I can do right now is go into the BIOS settings or watch it go into Windows and then get the... Read more

I recently upgraded to Windows 10 from the taskbar on my desktop. The upgrade was successful and I was able to use my computer normally. Today, when I started my computer, a disk check was started. After a long time of being stuck at 10%, I force booted the computer off. Now, the computer boots past the Windows 10 logo and goes to a black screen with the cursor. This screen appears before the login screen does. I am able to move the mouse but that is the limit of my control. The mouse is also showing the little blue loading circle next to it blinking over and over.

hi all, a recent problem has occurred with my computer. whilst playing games, i can play for a few minutes, and then a black screen appears, with sound looping and the screen status colour changes from solid green to flickering green. This is XP Professional by the way.My system is as follows:P5N-E Sli MoboC2D E750 2.66ghz2.0 gb ramXFX 8800GTS 320mbThe games in which this occur are as follows:Team Fortress 2Grand Theft Auto: San AndreasThe Elder Scrolls IV: OblivionGuild WarsHowever, what is strikingly odd about this problem is that it only occurs about 80% of the time. Yesterday, I managed to play Guild Wars, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic 2, Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas and The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion absolutely perfectly.I have searched forums, and it seems this can be linked to overheating, but my temperature gauge on the front of the computer says I run at about 30 C most of the time, and the computer itself is not hot inside at all. All fans are spinning fine, no dust.I have heard other issues such as graphics card drivers, and i have tried 3 different drivers, all of which did not overcome this problem.Could it possibly be sound drivers? Or possibly something wrong with the motherboard? Thanks in advance.Mod Edit: Topic moved to more appropriate forum~ TMacK

Dell vostro 220

My computer was lagging and wasn't connecting to the internet properly, and then it froze so I shut it down. When I started it back up, the BIOS loaded but then went to a blank black screen with a mouse. I can move the mouse around. It won't load any further. I've tried all the safe modes and it does the same thing. And I tried cleaning all the dust off the computer. I've tried waiting at that screen for longer than 3 hours. It just stays there.

It's possible that it's a virus but I don't know. How can I solve this problem? Because I can't get into the computer to do a system restore. Please help, thank you!

Could be overheating or could be a power supply issue. Hopefully, you bought a QUALITY brand power supply to power that "hungry" GTX 1080.

What is the full make and model of the power supply? Also full computer specs would help as well.

This started happening recently, but Ill be on my computer sometimes playing games, sometimes just talking to people on AIM, and then out of nowhere the screen goes black. I click and hit the keyboard but nothing happens, the power is still on, but my screen is black and I'm forced to restart my computer. The only way that I have found that works is this: I unplug all the cords and take off the case, then I take a small vacume and just vacum the motherboard and video card, and then it will work for about 1 week. 1 week later I have to do the same thing.. its getting annoying. I have a Radeon 9600, XP, Pent 4, 1 gig of RAM. The computers about 1 year old.

I will be surfing the web or playing a game when my computer just goes to a black screen like it is not communicating with my monitor anymore. I have tried a diffrent video card, diffrent monitor and diffrent cord and still get the same problem.

It appears that it does not shut off as my hard drive is still spinning and one time when it was at the blackscreen I heard a sound of my router conenction being dropped and re-established.

I am thinking it might be the ram as one time when I couldn't get it to boot back up after doing this I removed and re-seated the ram and it was fine. I am not sure though as it is pretty new ram so I thought I'd run my log here first.

Any help will be much appreciated.

Your malware is a variant of this infection. Backdoor Trojans, IRCBots and Infostealers are very dangerous because they provide a means of accessing a computer system that bypasses security mechanisms and steal sensitive information like passwords, personal and financial data which they send back to the hacker. Remote attackers use backdoor Trojans as part of an exploit to to gain unauthorized access to a computer and take control of it without your knowledge. Read the Danger: Remote Access Trojans. If your computer was used for online banking, has credit card information or other sensitive data on it, you should immediately disconnect from the Internet until your system is cleaned. All passwords should be changed immediately to include those used for banking, email, eBay, paypal and online forums. You should consider them to be compromised. They should be changed by using a different computer and not the infected one. If not, an attacker may get the new passwords and transaction information. Banking and credit card institutions should be notified of the possible security breach.Although the backdoor Trojan has been identified and may be removed, your PC has likely been compromised and there is no way to be sure the computer can ever be trusted again. It is dangerous and incorrect to assume that because the backdoor Trojan has been removed the computer is now secure. Hi everyone! I'm not sure if I am posting this in the correct forum, but I need your help!

I have an old (meaning I got it in 2000) Gateway Essential. It was working fine until Monday afternoon. My mom was using it and the screen went black. The monitor was still on and the power light on the tower was on, but it wasn't doing anything. When I restarted the computer, it brings up an error with my GoBack feature, saying that there could be a corrupt file in some software or a problem with the drive. It says to go through scandisk, which I do and it goes through and starts up fine. Then if I try running the anti-virus, log on to AOL to go on line, it will work for a few minutes, and then the same thing happens again. I restart it again and go through the whole process. I've run the defragger, uninstalled AOL and my Kodak Easyshare software and my Scanner Software, and am still having issues. I'm not sure what to try next--I'm not sure if its a software thing or a virus. Any and all help would be appreciated. Thank you!

i've had a laptop for 8 year now (Evesham Voyager X5) and about 3 years back, knocked it off a table which messed up the screen so it wouldn?t light up. however everything else works fine on it and i?ve been hooking it up to an old block monitor, but i find it annoying now as i have lots of valuable software on the machine. i?m not too great on the hardware side of computing, however i did a bit of research today, watched some utube videos and found out it?s most likely either the inverter or backlight gone bust. the thing is though, as the computer so old, i can?t seem to find anything about its spec and i was wondering if it matter what make/model inverter i bought if i was to buy one too the computer's voltage and the lcd screen it has on it already?

Answer:Old computer and black screen!

I would say it's more likely screen/backlight.
If it was just the inverter, the screen would still work but be very dim (almost black).
Shine a torch to see if you can see anything.
When I knocked my 2 yr old laptop (3 months at time) off an 18" side table onto carpet, it actually cracked the screen fairly obviously.
New screen cost me £70 from amazon
They are bit cheaper now, but you might have trouble with an 8 yr old laptop.
Replacement was easy for me (I am an electronic engineer). There are loads of Youtube vids and of course mfrs Service and Maintenance Manual Guide pdfs to help.
If you are practical, it is certainly doable.
But if pennies allow, you might want to consider a new laptop and connect your old Hard Drive in a caddy via USB to transfer everything over.
Old applications won't transfer, but there are lots of Freeware sites for most things (unless you have something special)

The computer that I have, had an operating system, motherboard and restore CDs that were innerconnected and then I changed the motherboard and the restore CDs stopped working. I then bought a new version of XP. This Version was professional and the old version was home edition. I got another old computer and tried to get age of empires 2 to run with a lan with the first computer described. I then concluded that microsoft wont allow different versions of windows to inner connect on a lan caming connection. I then decided to put the old motherboard back in the computer so the restore CD's should work again, and I then installed the other version of windows on the other old computer. I deleted the hard-drive of the motherboard first computer, and then reinstalled the installation CDs, because it failed to boot the first time before the hard-drive deletion. It is still failing to boot, and I am trying to delete the hard-drive again, incase I deleted the other one; (Because there was some swapping and some master/slave slot determining that had been forgotten by me.) Now when I say it doesn't boot, what I mean is, it shows the screen that states my graphic card, then scans for hard-drive, then it says "Found" or whatever it says, and then when it tries to load up window, it freezes at a black screen.

I hope you find the problem before I pull my hair out.

I have recently bought a barbones kit from TigerDirect and got it all hooked up and running. Worked great for 2days then before I went to work today as I was logged into World Of Warcraft the screen went full orange then black. Computer stayed on just black screen and no response from the keyboard and mouse. So I decide ok its not going to come back on turn it off. Turn it back on fans kick on everything sounds like its going to get back up and going but.... Screen just stays black nothing is going to it. So I call up my buddy who knows a few things about computers and he says to go ahead and switch the ram around. I switch it around to vaious spots doesn't work. He says ok take the video card out and try another or use onboard video. The motherboard I have has an onboard so I take out the video card and try the onboard same thing nothing on the screen. By this time im running out of time before work so he says to unplug the unplug the power and the atx plugs in the mobo and let it sit while im at work. 4hours pass I come back home plug it all back in try again fail. So I think ok well lets see if this ram really does work throw it into my second computer here and it loads up just fine. So as I see it right now it is not the ram. so we are down to it either being the CPU, MOBO, Video Card or Power supply. I am in the process right now of taking the cmos out and from what I have read from my Mobo Manual I have it set to reset the cmos right now as well.

I have a Compaq Presario CQ62 w/ AMD Processor. I've had it for about 2 years now, recently the screen has not turned on, it is black. I have tried a "hard reset" and it actually worked for a while, but when I tried to turn it back on, same problem occurred, the "hard reset" does not work anymore. The lights on the caps lock button keep blinking, and the power button light also turns on. I tried connecting to an external monitor and it does not work as well. What are the possibles reasons for this problem?

Thank you

Answer:Black Computer Screen

What do you mean by "not work as well"?

Well, if the external works fine, you LCD screen is shot, most likely a bad backlight. But if both you LCD and external don't work, that normally is a video card problem. Could also be another system fault.

Hiya to all who read this. My mom's computer screen will suddenly turn black. You can't do anything to bring it back except manual shut down. My Q is....monitor or video card? I believe I have my old video card that came with my computer that I could swap out to check, and I could always take over my monitor to check that also. Would there be anything else that may cause such a thing? Any advise or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Answer:Black Computer Screen

Both good ideas.

Try swapping the monitor first, since you don't have to do as much work.

If you still have the problem, then swapping video cards would make sense.

Hey guys,

I've been having problems with my Dell Inspiron 6000 for a while now. It's a great computer when it works- which it rarely does.

I'm going to explain my problem:

--Basically when I start the computer it goes straight to black screen. Windows does not start-up.

--I've called the Dell people at least 6 times over the last few years, and they've talked me through reinstalling the operating system, which I do. After the operating system is reinstalled the computer usually works for a few weeks, then goes back to the black screen.

--I have a virus protector on the computer, so I don't think i'm just catching new virus' with every reinstallation.

--I'm really not sure what to do. Do I need a new motherboard, harddrive? I don't know, but it's odd because after I reinstall the operating system I do get a few weeks where it works properly... then it breaks down again.

Any advice would be great!

Sounds like the MBR is corrupt can create your own Recovery Console disk with this file: must burn this file to a CD as an ISO. Post back if you need more information on how to do this.Insert the Recovery Console CD into the CD drive, and then restart the computer. Click to select any options that are required to start the computer from the CD drive if you are prompted. When the "Welcome to Setup" screen appears, press R to start the Recovery Console. If you have a dual-boot or multiple-boot computer, select the installation that you must access from the Recovery Console. When you are prompted, type the Administrator password. If the administrator password is blank, just press ENTER.

I have an FIC K7MNF-64 motherboard and I tried to install it into the computer I have been putting together but something isn't working. The first time I put everything together and turned it on a giant e came on the monitor, I'm guessing it's for emachines since the motherboard I am using is used in them a lot. After the e came up there was nothing, just black. I pushed every button people have told me to push to bring up the BIOS screen but nothing. Ever since that first time of turning it on not even the e screen will show up. I can hear the computer booting up but I see nothing on the monitor. The monitor power button always flashes like its on standby and its not getting anything from the computer. Also there is a beeping noise that repeats and repeats when I turn the computer on. I looked up the BIOS beep codes but it didn't have anything for the beeping that I hear. The only thing I bought used is the motherboard. I was wondering if there is any configurations I have to do for the motherboard to get it to work. Any special installation CD to configure it to the cpu?? I just need to get this computer working since my laptop stopped working. Any help would be greatfully appreciated.

Hi all,First post!  My Dad's Lenovo laptop goes to a black screen when starting up, so is unusable.I haven't seen it in the flesh yet but have started to research things for him and have found that 'black screen' shows up quite a lot for Windows 10 and Lenovo PCs! We were so impressed with my Dad's PC I've ended up with the same model myself:Lenovo YOGA 500 Convertible Laptop, Intel Core i7, 8GB RAM, 256GB SSD, 15.6" Touch Screen. Also labelled as: Yoga 500-15IBD Laptop (ideapad)  I see some people mentioning hardware failures and others device driver problems with the graphic card etc. but haven't read a definite cause/fix for this so far. I've just found this recent critical BIOS update for this PC which mentions the black screen problem:Software name: BDCN63WW Version 63[Important updates] Fix Win 10 lid close black screen issue. haven't seen this mentioned in the forums? Has anyone else used this?If the PC always boots to a black screen I'll obviously have trouble installing this! I'm hoping that it will boot in Safe Mode or I'm going to have some trouble installing it?! I don't know whether to install the BIOS update on my own machine which is running fine - I think I'll wait until I see my Dad's laptop first which will be in a few weeks. Has anyone had any experience of this BIOS update or other comments on this?Thanks. &nb... Answer:Yoga 500 'BLACK SCREEN' - BIOS update: "[Important updates] Fix Win 10 lid close black screen issue"

I'm still wondering about this... I've just updated the Lenovo Companion after seeing it mentioned in another thread. It looks like this s/w is supposed to scan the PC and recommend Lenovo updates - critical and nice to have ones. Initially the Companion was showing a critical update for Lenovo SHAREit and a recommended one for my BIOS. It says I'm currently on BDCN28WW and offered something like v61 and not the 63 I mentioned in my first post? After letting it update SHAREit and re-scanning the BIOS update is no longer being offered and still shows me on v28 ??? I'm not sure I trust this 'Companion' app!My laptop seems to be running fine so I don't want to break it updating the BIOS if it's not required. For all I know my Dad's broken one may be broken because it upgraded?! Does anyone else use/trust the Companion app?And has anyone else seen it change it's mind on recommended BIOS updates? Thanks.

Really don't know where to post this, so forgive any inappropriate posting.

I'm running Windows XP Home, SP2 -- all updates current.

My problem is that my computer has just been freezing up and the screen going black for no reason I can figure. I've checked "sleep" and "hibernate" settings, and they all seem to be off. I've instructed the computer to NEVER go to sleep.

At first, I had the problem which I thought may have been linked to my newly-purchased & registered version of AVG AntiVirus, but then I took everything out of System Start-up EXCEPT for that, changed the time for daily update and it seemed to fix things.

Then the other day, I installed Kodak's Easy Share software for my new digital camera, and the problem started again. Suspecting the software,
I uninstalled that just this morning, and restarted the computer after the uninstall. After that, my mouse would no long choose just a single selection of anything -- no matter how much I clicked, it would choose multiple selections. So, I rebooted.

Seems fine now -- BUT I am leary, and of course, I have to reinstall the camera software in order to be able to transfer the pictures.

Does anyone have any idea what could be causing this problem?

Thanks in advance,

I have no idea what to tell

Hello,I turned off my computer and when I turned it back on the computer is working (I can hear it) but, the screen is black. The cap lock key is flashing. How can I fix this without clearing the memory on the computer? I got it only 10 months ago.

Answer:Black screen, computer still running

Hi, The fact that the caps lock led is blinking may indicate that this is a hardware issue, but you could try the following. Shutdown the notebook. Unplug the AC Adapter and then remove the battery ( assuming your Model has a removable battery ).  Hold  down the Power button for 30 seconds.  Plug in the AC Adapter ( leave the battery out for the moment ) and see if the notebook will start correctly. If it doesn't and as you mention your notebook is only 10 months old, it should still under warranty, so contact HP and arrange for it to be repaired - If needed, you can check your warranty status Here. If you live in the US, contact HP Here. If you are in another part of the world, start Here. Regards, DP-K

This problem only started a few days ago.

My computer started up to a black screen, and after a few seconds my monitor went to sleep. No cursor, nothing. I had do a hard reboot to get it to work properly. Yesterday, it happened twice. I hit Google to see what I could find but nothing worked. Here's what I found:

1. Some threads suggested it could be a problem with the video card or some other driver. My video card driver is up to date, my most recent driver installation was my printer, however, that was done over a week ago, and the black screen problem didn't occur then.

2. Startup programs, I checked to see if it might be something attempting to load, but it was just the update service for my printer, and the digital imaging software for my printer(both disabled, as of right now). It was neither of these as the problem occurred again.

3. I ran malware bytes and it came back clean, no malware detected. Running Norton to see if it could find anything but I highly doubt it.

The black screen only happens some of the time. When I make it to the login screen, my machine runs normally, nothing strange occurs, I can use my machine as if there isn't a problem.

My monitor is fairly new, closer to a year old.

I ran chkdsk /f and it was completed, no errors or interruptions.

I really don't want to replace my hard drive, I have a back up solution in place so I'm not worried about my files. My real problem is, if I have to re-install windows I need a new CD key for Windows 7... Read more

Answer:Computer Sometimes Starts Up with A Black Screen

Hello and welcome Annabelle looks like a similar problem I had a while ago with my Sandy Bridge build - tried all the usual stuff like you have and in the end it was solved by just reseating the GPU card.

Try that first along with most of the major cables power and board connectors and have a good general clean out inside the case.
Edit: Don't forget the static electricity rules - ground yourself on the case while it is plugged in before diving inside the case and then unplug the thing before you dos so.

The chkdsk (you could try the /r switch with that) I see you have run but try this as well if you haven't already

SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker
Disk Check < if necessary include the /f and /r in the command line as per Option2
Run these in safe mode and the sfc often best run for two to three runs

then these if necessary
SUPERAntiSpyware | Remove Malware | Remove Spyware - AntiMalware, AntiSpyware, AntiAdware!
Malwarebytes | Malwarebytes Anti-Malware Premium
AdwCleaner Download
ADW download from bleeping computer delete any rubbish found with the malware scans
(NB If you are running Kaspersky as the main AV then it might need disabling it when trying ADW because it does not like it at times)

The Norton I am not a fan off so I'd leave that and as for the 7 key it really is worth a phone call to Microsoft and explain your predicament and as a general rule they are normally happy to let you use the key again.

So I hit the Windows key. Nothing happens. Control+Alt+Delete, again, nothing happens. I went into a frenzy and hit everything on my keyboard, and still nothing happened! I know it's still connected and on and stuff, 'Cos whenever I hit like Control+C or something it'll beep. I can't reboot, I have other important things on there. If her harddrive is as full as you say it is that is going to cause issues as you are experiencing. Suggest for the future you invest in an external harddrive to store items you want to save. And it seems you will need to delete a lot of files, etc. to free up space. basically Windows can't work.

My computer is an HP Pavillion dv9000 with around 3 GB RAM and 300 GB hard drive space. That may not help in my situation because when I start my computer, it all loads fine. You hear the tune of windows Vista and it brings me to the login screen to put in my password (It's VIsta Home Premium to be specific). I input my password and it logs in. It then brings me to a black page with only my cursor showing. I CAN run task manager and when I check how many processes I'm running, I'm only running 9 processes:csrss.exewinlogon.exenvvsvc.exedwm.exemsfeedssync.exePresentationSettings.exetaskeng.exeexplorer.exetaskmgr.exeThis black screen happened after I ran system restore due to my computer becoming so slow that it could be deemed unresponsive. Since that didn't work out, I started my computer and pressed F8 continuously and reran system restore to a point farther back in time. That didn't fix a thing and now I'm stuck only with these 9 processes, my task manager, my cursor, the login screen, and the vista symbol at the beginning. I'm on a secondary computer posting this because my first one is completely useless at the moment. What should I do to fix it? Please help. Thank you in advance for reading my post thus far.

I had essentially the same issue not long ago and it resulted from a conflict with the attempted use of some software. The company that created the software eventually determined it WAS a problem of conflict with their software. They provided me with an ISO image that enabled me to "restore the MBR" (master boot record). I do not know if this could be where your issue and solution lie but i mention it in case another higher pay grade CH member might see this as a solution to your problem and give you more complete guidance to enable you to do it. My computer that i own isn't working properly. Firstly, its about 4-5 years old the power button gets stuck. I've been fiddling with it from the outside to come out all the way since if it goes in all the way and doesnt come out, it keeps restarting. When i wiggle it out, it starts and goes.

Now onto my problem now. When i start up my computer, a screen pops up allowing me to press F1 for setup. if i don't click F1, my computer goes to a black screen with a _ blinking in the top right. I can't do anything from that point and when i press keys too many times, it starts beeping after i hit any key again.

Anyways if you guys could help me, I would be very thankful!

Answer:Turn on my computer, black screen

sounds like it may be time for an upgrade

have you made any hardware changes or installed new device drivers?

from what you describe it seems like the system is having some issues booting the operating system from the hard drive, or there could be another hardware fault causing the hangup... like the memory or motherboard itself. if you are able to view the POST screen upon startup (which displays all of the system information and keys to access BIOS etc...) then you may be able to boot from a CD-ROM to run repairs or possibly boot into safe mode by repeatedly striking the F8 key after the POST screen appears.

There is a momentary freeze and the screen goes black and 'DVI No Signal' flashes up on my monitor. This has happened in Chrome, in games and when the computer has been idle so it is not an application issue. My desktop does not want to start up anymore. There is no BIOS beep or start up beep when I turn on my desktop. The computer itself turns on but the screen gets no signal. I tried to restart the desktop a couple of times but its still doing the same thing. I also tried to do warm restarts but nothing has helped so far.

2 weeks ago it also happened, and I pretty much just unplugged the CMOS battery, as well as the cable the psu, and the video card. I cleaned everything out to make sure there was not dust messing anything up. It worked again up until now.

I have not added or changed anything to the desktop for the last 2 years and it just suddenly started acting up.

Any clue what it could be?

I realized after doing this many times that if I leave it on this black screen after a good 10 to 15 min it goes onto the logon screen and I type in my password and it logs into the computer. Takes a while to start up so I try to run a virus scan and then it will restart the computer and nothing happens. Also I am able to log onto safe mode just fine but if I have to many things going on it freezes and I have to restart the computer and I am then back to square one.

Well for the past month my computer has been freezing or my mouse froze requiring a reboot, but when I started it up again the screen would go black and not do anything then I would turn it off and turn it back on and it would start up normally.

A couple days ago I had to reformat my computer cause I kept getting a computer crash leading to a blue screen.

Just today my computer froze when I started up a game, then I turned off my computer and again the booting up with black screen happens again but this time, it will not start up at all even after several times turning off and trying to turn back on.

Idk if this helps but my keyboard lights quickly flash then they go off and my keyboard dont work.

Anymore info you might need just ask. I would like to know whats wrong.

Hello. I've come to hopefully find a solution to a boot up problem I'm having with my computer. There are several factors that I'm honestly not sure will play a role or not, mainly because I'm not very understanding when it comes to computers.

The problem is that when I push the power button of my computer, it sends no signal to my screen. I can't tell if it loads anything or not either. I can think of a few things that might have some effect on this, but I'm not sure.

About three months back after cleaning my neglected tower of dust and such, it started to shut off rapidly after boot up. To inspect the problem, I had a friend look at the computer. He removed the cooling unit on the Processor revealing that my 8year old computer had next to no thermal compound. So after putting of ordering some for about three months, we had applied some about 2 days ago. The computer then booted up fine, but seemed to have an excess amount of lag. So I wiped the computer and reinstalled XP tonight. When it was booted up, it worked fine, so I went into IE to download firefox as it's my preference, then started reinstalling my drivers. First I installed my Videocard, then kept my computer booted up for my sound drivers which I got from the Compaq homesite. After doing this, I rebooted my computer. Not I wanted to get simple things such as AIM and and Java. So when i go to boot up Firefox from it's default homepage, my computer shuts down. when I go to reboot it, it doesn't start and I'm ... Answer:Black screen, computer restarting

What OS are you running? What are your hardware specs? What game is it?

Firstly, disable automatic restart by doing this (assuming you have Windows 7... XP is similar, and Vista/Win8 are the same pretty much).

Start > Right click 'Computer' > Properties > click 'Advanced System Settings' on the left panel > under 'Startup and Recovery' click 'Settings...' > under 'System Failure' uncheck 'Automatically Restart' > Click OK on all open dialogs.

After that, if you get a BSOD, post the info that's pointed to by the red arrows in this topic:
Decoding STOP Errors
For the 2nd arrow, include the full STOP code, as well as if there is a driver file indicated below the STOP error (will be a *.dll or *.sys file).

Also, what are your temps while running the game? Download HWMonitor and post some screenshots while the game is running before you crash.

This has happened before but the toolbar was always visible at the bottom of the screen and now it's not. The only thing I can do with the screen black is type in Ctrl Alt and Delete to get the menu. Nothing on the menu seems to be helping with the issue.
I decided that I better see if the same thing was happening with my guest profile too. When I logged into my guest profile everything is working fine and that's what I'm on right now. However, the administrator profile has all my documents that I need for school and work so factory resetting or the possibly of wiping the computer isn't really an option.
Thank you for your time.

When i turn on my computer, it just goes to a black screen, no sign of the bio's screen or windows xp screen. No flickering or anything, no indication its connected except for the fact when i unplug the monitor the screen saying there is no cable on the monitor shows up. i tried a different monitor on it, same thing happens. It is connected to the on-board graphics card. I tried removing the hard drive to see if that was the problem, no luck. Shouldn't it at least show the bios screen? I tried removing the battery without any luck hoping it would reset any bios, I tried removing the ram, no luck. Any ideas on what is wrong with it?

Intel Celeron D Processor 335 (2.8GHz)

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Been reading the blogs.  I have a pavillion G7 and the screen is black on boot up.  The num key and shift key were both lit and would not switch when pressed, until I removed the battery and let it set for a while.  Now they are off and the only light on the keyboard is the wireless on F12. I have tried to boot up pressing F11, F12, F8, F2, del, and esc repeatedly on sessive attempts to boot up.  Nothing seems to get me into the boot up menu or the bios.  Even tried booting up without the battery, power supply only, after discharging by holding the power button and pressing the F keys...  Any suggestions? Thanks,-=Carey

I have a black frame around my computer screen. After I had some guys come and work on it, they switched it to Windows XP and now a black frame is around the computer screen showing a smaller picture of the page. Can someone tell me how to remove this please? THANKS!!!

Answer:How Do I get rid of black frame around my computer screen?

- Right-click on your Desktop and select Properties.
- Go to the Settings tab.
- Change the Screen Resolution. Considering your brief description, I'd guess it is set too low, so move the slider over a notch to something like 1024x768 and click OK.

Vista - Screen/Monitor Problem

I just upgraded to vista about 3 weeks ago, and everything was working fine. I shut my computer off a couple nights ago and when i went to turn it on it went through the regular start-up, and Welcome screen, and then went black. I had an error message that popped up (i will turn the computer on to check what it said and will post it) but everything behind the message was still black.

When i turn the computer on in safe mode the screen works fine. Is there a way for me to see what the problem is in safe mode? I backed up everything, but my recovery disk 1 isn't working (i dont now if it is the computer or the disk, so before i buy new disks i want to see if there is anything that could be done to fix it).

Does anyone recognize this problem? Please Help!

Answer:Computer Starts - Screen Black

You can check your drivers in safe mode.... if you see an exclamation mark in a yellow triangle, you'll know that's a problem.

I noticed that my downloads speeds were abysmal and that the problem was that my hard drive was running at 1% to 2% while in a download. This meant that I was getting 1.1 mg/s download speed. So I changed the sata cable connected to the hard drive and change it to the first port in the motherboard. this fixed the problem. I was getting 5 to 6 mg/s download speeds but when I started playing any game my monitor went black and on the screen would say "no signal". I changed the sata cable back where it was originally plugged and the problem at first seemed fixed but I still have the 1.1 mg/s download speed. Then the problem with my monitor returned. Also I noticed that every time I booted my pc my internet connection started connecting and disconnected fore a few minutes and then connected. I tried every sata port on the motherboard and the problem persisted. I tried reinstalling windows 10 and nothing. I changed the sata cable and nothing. In another forum somebody said that it could be a problem with my motherboard. I would like to know for surten before I change it.

ps sorry for my bad English, not my first language.

I have started having problems booting up my computer, the screen stays off. I have to unplug my computer and press the off button but this does not always work sometimes it takes a few tries. Could there be a problem with my RAM?

Answer:Computer does not always boot, black screen.

Firstly: Don't unplug your PC, you could cause irreparable damage.
Use the Reset button.
This happens to my old plodder (8yo) every now and again, but not that often. By pure chance it happened this morning. My guess is that, for some reason, the Hard Drive did not start, but to be honest I have no idea.
What I have done: I have no real intention of buying a replacement but I have started saving.
I have set in hand a Backup System. I upgraded it from XP to W7 18 months ago and that has a Backup Facility built in. I bought a WD 'My Passport' and backup every Sunday Night. I also installed Nero 'Backitup' which I use to backup my .pst File and Accounts, every day.
With luck, if everything goes tits up, I shall be able to resume normal service, within about 10 days, by using a Mates PC to order a replacement, on-Line.

Our computer was working fine. We were having trouble with the wireless mice on another computer so we tried some troubleshooting with the laptop. We unplugged one mouse (that was working fine) and plugged in a different mouse. It worked fine (the drivers for it had already been installed). When we plugged the original mouse back in it would not work even after trying the "connect" buttons. So we restarted the computer using the Windows menu and "restart".On restart we got a black screen. I read the "Boot Up" trouble shooting on this forum but I am unable to do any of the following because we cannot get past either a black screen or mup.sys. or I don't know how to get around my problems to try all of these...Black Screen Hang (before splash screen shows)- Disk Diagnostic- CHKDSK /F /R (try to boot)- fixmbr (try to boot)- fixboot (try to boot)- Safe Mode (try to boot)Here is what I have done:Regular Startup = Black ScreenRecovery Console = Hangs up at "Please Wait"Safe Mode (with or without netwoking) = hangs up at mup.sysLast Known Good Config = Black ScreenI inserted our Toshiba Recovery disk and hit the F12 Boot Menu on restart and selected the CD/DVD driveGot a message "Loading RAMDISK image...." and once it was complete it got hung up at "Please Wait"Any help would be greatly appreciated

I'm using an HP notebook nw9440 with windows XP SP2 and an external monitor ViewsonicVX2025 WM. When I am working, it could be several hours or less at times, I suddenly get a black screen. There is no warning, no error messages, the computer seems to be functioning normally. The power for the laptop is still on, just the screen is black. The system seems to be in a hybernate state, but it does not come back on by pressing any keys. The only way to power back is to press and hold the power button for several minutes. Then everything loads fine and I start working again and several hours later the same thing happens. I was told it could be a virus, or something so I completed steps 1-9 to rule this out. So recently my computer has been crashing... well I do not know if the computer is crashing or my graphics card is..

I will be playing CODMW3 or a few other games that I own, when both my screens go black, and the sound lags... Like if any sound that was currently playing when it crashed drags on forever.... I am not sure if the computer itself is crashing because all my fans are running and lights are on... ??

I am tried MANY things to narrow down the problem, such as...
Tried using a different video card... Same thing....
Tried adjusting the amount of ram, and doing memory diag...
Checking Temps of my CPU and GPU.. both in decent ranges...

This issue is never at the same time.. I could be playing for 30 minutes before it goes, or sometimes right when i jump into the first game of the day...

I even thought this could be a windows issue, as unlikely as that was.. And re installed windows..

My specs are...

AMD Phenom II X4 840, 3.20 GHz
16GB of memory
MSI Nvidia 550 ti
Rocket Fish 5.1 Audio card

Please I would love for any insights on why this might be....

One other thing.. Maybe is related maybe not... My 700W power supply, Rocket fish aswell... Will stay "kinda" running when i shut down my computer.. Or the 120 m fan will stay running with its lights on...

Thanks for the read I hope to get some good feed back! I wish to resolve this asap!

hey guys,

I was attempting to clean my computer screen today by wiping it off with a tissue paper but I accidently wiped over a bunch of buttons on my screen, and I have no idea what the function of those is lol.
My PC screen went black, and I don't know to get things back to normal. I still hear the computers noise so I know it's on. I already tried to turn off the PC and unplug it, but that didn't fix the problem. When I start it up again the screen remains black.

I've also managed to lose the manual. Any idea's? here's a pic FYI

Well, I've built my computer and it sounds great when it starts up, but there is no display, not even BIOS on the monitor. lemme lay it out for you:

the fan and the heat sink look and sound like they're working.
I've tried my video card (a GeForce 7600 GS), and a friend's (Geforce 6800). I plugged in the power extension on the 6800. neither of the video cards worked, and I can't try using them in tandem either.
I believe the most important thing may be the monitor. the light under the screen turns green when I first turn it on, then turns orange. I don't know about everyone else, but for my monitor this means one or more of three things:

the attached computer is turned off
there is no computer connected to the monitor
the computer is on sleep
I read my video card manual, and it said that I MIGHT need to update the drivers that are specifically for the monitor. How do I do this without being able to turn on the computer, or even being able to memorize the keystrokes and do it blindly: the reason being that it doesn't sense my keyboard.
If anyone could make use of more information than this, let me know and I'll list the other components I have in there.

Answer:building computer/ black screen

I don't think your vid card drivers are at fault, they haven't been invoked at the intial stage.

Your card may be faulty did you try it in another pc?

Your assembly may be faulty recheck very carefully, especially memory and secondary power connectors.

Normally when a monitor is first switched on the power light comes on and then changes colour when it receives the sync signal from the pc.

What do the lights on the keyboard do?

I bought a used Sony Vaio Laptop, and I can shut down just fine, I can turn the pc if it's been off just fine. However, if I just want to restart the computer in XP Pro /w SP2, Windows will shut down and then where I should have the bios screen and all the start up processes going on before Windows loads I just have this black screen and no buttons get rid of it, I am just forced to hold down the power button until it shuts off. I just recently bought a new 64gb SSD and installed it into my computer as the case manufacturer said in the instructions. I did everything as planned, then plugged my computer back in, to turn it on and get a black screen. No bios or anything. I tried plugging it into my alternate display to see if that was the issue, and it was not the issue. I later tried booting the computer without the SSD plugged in which yeilded the same result as before. I hope to get help soon so i can get my rig running and install my OS onto it.

*NOTE: if this post is in the incorrect section of the forums, i ask that a moderator move it to the section that is right.

Answer:Computer getting black screen after installing new SSD.

Check and make sure you didn't accidentally unplug anything, also try to reset your BIOS/CMOS.

Ensure your monitor has power, try using different monitors, do the lights on your keyboard flash on then off? Do you get sound from your speakers after waiting awhile to determine if the OS has loaded?

When I try to start up, the computer starts, then turns off for about 2 seconds, then starts up again, and stays on until i turn it off. Theres only 1 short beep when I start it up.

Answer:New Computer, black screen + GPU Fan at max speed

First of all search for beep codes for your MB, # of beeps will tell you what fails during bootup. I build quiet few desktops myself and usually in case like yours is good to recheck all the connections, especially seating of the video card, more than once the card seemed to be in but not really. Also all the power supply cables, RAM and pretty much redo whole assembly from scratch. Also it's often helpful to boot computer with minimum components: for example disconnect hard drive and it should still get you into BIOS and to "can't find boot drive" message, but the beep and no video at all would indicate it stops at the very beginning of sequence and that's where beep codes are helpful. Could be one of the components is not compatible or outright broken also.

I set up a new PC 3 days ago. Occasionally it displays a black screen, the image flicker for like 0.5 seconds and then that's it - windows doesnt react to anything after that.

It doesn't happen on a special load situation, just out of nothing - while surfing, listen to iTunes....

Things I did:

Logged all the temperatures/voltages of the system, nothing special here before it crashes.
Looked at the windows logs, again nothing special/recurring before it crashes.
Tested the RAMs for 4 hours, no crash while doing that.
Ran the CPU/GPU on 100% load for a few hours, no crash while doing that.
Check for virusses using ClamAV -> no virus found.

I kinda don't know what else I can do, any help would be appreciated.

recently (the last week or so) my computer will randomly lock up and the screen turns black. I have had the computer for roughly 1-1.5 years and it has been working well up until now. I am not particularly great with technical stuff, but I'm not completely ignorant either. When I open up the case, all the fans appear to be functioning, and the temperature usually doesn't go above 40 degrees Celsius, so I don't think it's an overheating issue. I check the event viewer in Admin Tools after every lock up, but there isn't anything there. The lock ups occur kind of ranomly. At first, I thought the issue might have something to do with World of Warcraft, since lock ups often occur while I'm playing. However, it does lock up occasionally when I am simply browsing forums or whatnot. Also, the first time my computer locked up and reboot, it was running slugishly and when I checked, it said I only had 768 MB of RAM. I have 2 512 sticks and one 256 stick. This is when I popped out the RAM, cleaned it, and put it back. After rebooting again, my computer read it as 1.25 GB. I'm not sure if the issue could be RAM related or if that is just a coincidence. Any help is appreciated, thanks!

Hi, at first I thought this might be virus related. I went through with help from Howard_Hopkinso, and removed all virus' and malware. But my problem persists.

I have an Alienware Area 51 m7700, 120 Gig HD, 3 Gig memory, 3.8 GHz Pentium 4 HT duo processor. NVIDIA GeForce Go 6800 Ultra.

What happens is when i try and playing a source game for little while the screen goes black, sound skips, but the laptop still runs. Also happens when i click on certain internet links.

I assume that i need updated drivers, which i did. but that didn't work either.

I am lost, any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hello!Recently I got Avast AV and it said that I had a virus and so on, Something about Kavos and a rootkit, so it tried deleting it, but failed, told me it was gonna do a boot scan, so it did that, found the viruses and when i logged back into windows, same thing, it found the viruses. So I read that Trend Micro Systems is better then Avast so I uninstalled Avast and installed Trend Micro Systems Pro 2009, at that point I did a update for the new AV I had and it told me to restart to complete the update, so I do that, but once my computer starts and it says Toshiba, it tells me to choose between: Safe Mode, Safe Mode with networking, Safe Mode with Command Prompt, Last known good config, or start windows normally, if I choose last known good configuration or start normally, my screen goes black, and I never reach the windows logo with the bar, if I choose safe mod, I get a bunch of text, and the text just stays there.Any help is GREATLY appreciatedMuch Thanks

Ok so my Dell Inspiron 1526 laptop with Windows Vista is having problems. I turn the laptop on and all I get is a black screen. The blue power button is on but the screen shows nothing, not even a start up screen. I tried the whole process of taking out the battery and holding the power button for 60 seconds, and then putting the battery back in. That actually gets the laptop to work and to start up correctly. However, after I turn it off and come back to use it the next time, it goes back to the same problem with the black screen and i end up having to take the battery out and hold the power button again for it to work. I dont want to have to do this every time I want to use the computer, can someone here please help me? Do you think I need a new battery?

Answer:Computer has black screen on start up

If you have access to a battery supply store they can test it for you. How old is the battery? Does the laptop work properly if the battery is removed and it is run only off the power supply? truenorth

My computer monitor just stays black when I turn on the PC for the last week. I hear the fans and hardware running. Monitor power light turns from orange (standby) to green (receiving video signal), no flashing cursor. Just before doing that, there were 2 occasions when just using the computer it flashed to a full screen of grey for 1-2 seconds and then went black. It's just a black screen when I turn on the PC now.

Suggestions that I have considered:
1. Monitor is plugged in. No new hardware installed in years. Last software installed was DVD catalyst trial version 1 month ago.
2. Loose wires/Fans not running. I opened up the pc and checked, yep, still running. Have not moved the pc in years, nothing loose. Removed some dust, still no help.
3. Need some software update?
4. Last to consider is a possible video card issue. The computer is a 7-8 year old emachines (T3256, if anyone knows about it) with the Nvidia GeForce 4 MX video card. (I use the computer only for web, netflix and wordprocessing.)
Does anyone know/think it's most likely a video card issue? If it is, I would rather just buy a new video card.
Any further suggestions or ideas for tests would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

Answer:Black computer screen from boot up

Set your monitor to its factory defaults and run a self-test if it has one.
Try another video cable.
Try your monitor on another computer.
Try another monitor on your computer.
Remove your video card and attach your monitor to the on-board graphics.

These tests should isolate the problem.
