Preferred Solution: my sdhc card won't read. I used to read just fine.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: my sdhc card won't read. I used to read just fine.

Throw card away & buy a new one. They wear out eventually and the camera is more tolerant of a worn card than Windows is.

I got an 8gb micro sdHC card filled up using the adapter, with music, which plays fine.

Before I received this cheap us>microSD adapter I asked the seller if it read HC cards. They said no. It's just a cheap chinese adapter on ebay so there isn't much info on it at all. It's write up didn't say anything about HC capabilities.

Like I mentioned, I was able to use it to load up an 8gb sdHC card.

Does this mean that it will probably also work with a 32gb sdHC card? Is there a size limit that the 8gb card didn't exceed?

If yes, I'd like to buy more now because I don't think these will hold up to much use.

Answer:Can My Usb>microsd Adapter Read Sdhc If It Fills An 8gb Sdhc Card? Seller Says It Won't.

I found the same item elsewhere on ebay which mentions that it recognizes up to 32gb, which is what I needed.

So....I suppose there are quite a few adapters out there labelled only SD but will in fact read up to at least 32 SDHC cards.

I think going over 32gb cards might require additional capabilities.

I recently upgraded my Windows Vista 32 into a Windows 7 Ultimate. I'm not very tech savvy so I can't tell you details unless informed on how to. It's a Toshiba Satellite

Sorry, back to the topic, I have an SDHC card, and it worked fine, but I left it alone for a month or so and now I've tried to use it, and it won't read, and now my computer keeps making the sound as if I have inserted the card or a usb device into the computer. DO you think an upgrade may have messed with my computer?

Answer:Windows 7 SDHC Card not being read.

Welcome to SevenForums.

Since the upgrade to windows 7 might have not find any drivers during the process, i'll suggest you to go on the manufacturer site, searching for your computer model and see if there's any.

PS: Be more detailled about your laptop model, there's plenty of Toshiba Satellite!

I own a Toshiba laptop of Qosmio F-50-series.

As I connected a SANDISK SDHC-Card 4 GB to my laptop there was no reaction of recognizing the new media.
No new driveletter nothing.

Can you help me?

Yours Starmind/Thomas

Answer:Qosmio F50 cannot read the SDHC card 4 GB

The card reader supports the SD cards 8MB-2GB and SDHC cards 4GB-16GB.
Therefore your card should be recognized without any big troubles.

Did you insert it correctly?

Try also to remove the card reader from the device manager and then reboot the notebook. After the Windows has booted again, the card reader should be recognized as new device. Then try to insert the CDHC card again

Hello everyone,

I'm having trouble with my laptop. It's an ASUS laptop running on Windows 8.1. I've had this computer for about a year now and have had no trouble before with having it pick up whatever SD cards that I insert into the port. However, a few weeks ago, I noticed that it will no longer read SD cards at all. When I updated to Windows 8.1 about 3-4 days ago, nothing changed. Cards still will not be read. I've tried 4 different SD cards before and after I undated windows. I've also tested the SD cards on other computers to make sure that the cards themselves were not faulty. {Which they are not. They are perfectly fine on other computers.} I've snooped through Disk Management on my windows and the SD cards will not show up on the list.

I'm hoping to get some help with this problem. Thanks in advance.

I have a small little card reader on the front of my laptop,
previously it's been able to read my card,
now it doesn't read it, well it kind of does but if I click to open it
it says to insert a card, it shows in My Computer but I can't access it
if I put any of my other cards in then they're read fine
i've even used other adapters and tried moving the card
but it doesn't work, also today for some unknown reason
there's now a pin on the card when it's in my phone
it has no un/lock slider on this card it seems the phone has randomly pinned it
I can't reformat it, it has stuff on there I can never get back
is there any way to fix the problem?

Any ideas why the 4GB SDHC might not be recognized by my computer? Might it be too large for my old HP Pavillion a320n?

Answer:Computer will not read 4GB SDHC card

It might be. Quite a few things won't read the SDHC cards. I'd consider looking for a card reader, maybe one that fits in a drive bay (floppy or cd) if you don't want anything external.

Answer:Hp Envy 17 touchscreen SDHC Card reader do not read card in ...

@YoannFromParis, Hello and thanks for posting on the HP support forums.  When dealing with the issues from doing an update to Windows 10 there are a few things that may work to fix the issue. First thing to try is running the Windows Update Troubleshooter. The next step is to run the HP BIOS recovery to reload the BIOS to see if it will sync up with the operating system. HP Notebook PCs - Restoring the BIOS And if this fails to fix the problem, if you did the update to Windows 10 you can do the stand alone installation to see if it fixes any conflict. Download Windows 10 The other option is to roll back to the previous operating system until new updates get released by Microsoft and then uploaded on the HP support page for your notebook. Please let me know how things go.  Thanks again for posting and have a great day.

I had Vista installed on my Acer  5610z laptop and I was able to read my SDHC card, I now have XP and when i put in the SDHC card in the internal card raader nothing happens. I downloaded the drivers from Acer website for XP card reader and still nothing. I know the card reader is capable of reading the SDHC card, because it was working with Windows Vista. I tried everything and still nothing. Anyone have an idea or suggestion.

Answer:SDHC card reader will not read card in XP, but it did in Vista?? Any idea?

Maybe if you told us the make and model of your card reader and whether it is internal or external, instead of putting all your question in the title and just a sad smiley where the information should be, you might get an answer.

Thanks a lot:

Answer:Re: Satellite A200-1N7 does not read SDHC card using Win 7 32bit

Did you install the card reader driver?
Did you notice an unknown device in device manager?

Please check the Toshiba European drive page for the card reader driver!
Satellite A200-1N7 belongs to the PSAE3E series?
I found the card reader driver for Vista 64bit?
Usually Vista driver should work on Win 7 OS too?

If this will not work, then try the drivers released for A500 or L500 series!

So I should have a driver problem?

Thanks for you help.

Answer:Satellite P200-1JY and Win7 - SDHC card cannot be read

First of all I have checked your user manual of Satellite P200 and it supports the following SD card types:
-SD up to 2GB

Are you using such SD cards or with more capacity?

If you use such supported cards I would try updating the card reader driver. You can try the Flash Media Driver for Vista that you can get on the official Toshiba page.
Check this!!!

Portege R 500 does not read SDHC cards in the SD slot. Normal SD cards can be read without problems. Manual states, that SDHC cards can be read. in different forums it is stated, that SDHC cards up to 16 GB work without problems. I have already downloeded and installed the most recent version of SD utilities, unfortunately without success.

Answer:Portege R500: SDHC Card cannot be read in SD slot

I found out that you can use the 2GB SD cards and 8GB SDHC cards.

I don?t know why you are not able to use you SDHC card but I would recommend removing the SD slot from the device manager and after new reboot to reinstall the driver from the Toshiba European driver page.

But wait;
Did you use Windows XP?
If yes, did you install SP2 and this MS patch?

[Hotfix for Windows XP that adds support for SDHC cards that have a capacity of more than 4 GB|]

Please check this firstly. Maybe it solves your issue!

Answer:Lenovo G480 unable to read SDHC card

hi mynorkin,
If you have the Lenovo G480 (type 2184 or 2688) as listed in this pdf data sheet, this doesn't support SDHC (Secure Digital High Capacity) as the card reader installed on these system is only a 2-in-1 reader which only supports MMC and Secure Digital Card,
As an alternative, you can get a USB Card Reader.
Edit: Added sample usb card reader.
Hope this helps.

Found the following on the Sandisk website.

Other options you can use to read files on your SDHC card
If your computer's card reader is not SDHC compatible, you have 3 options available:

1. You can connect your camera (or other device) that works with SDHC to your computer using a USB cable that came with the camera. You should be able to transfer files to the computer this way.

2. You can contact your computer manufacturer to see if they have a free firmware update for your model that will make it SDHC compatible

3. You can buy inexpensive SanDisk SDHC card readers that will connect to your computer's USB port. Click to expand...

Hey all.  I just bought a Thinkpad Advanced Dock for my T61 and it's pretty much replaced my old desktop system.  The only problem I'm having with it is that the card reader in the dock won't read SDHC cards.  It'll read SD cards fine, but doesn't do anything for SDHC cards.  My T61 will read SDHC cards, which I use as a readyboost drive, but I'd rather use the card reader built into the dock for it.  I've looked for updated drivers, but apparantly the dock doesn't have drivers, according to the Lenovo site's Drivers section.  Any help?   Now all I have to do is wait to get a video card to replace the crappy Intel x3100 in my T61...  Any recommendations on a better one than the one Lenovo recommends? I've heard good things about the PowerColor AX6570 and ATI Radeon HD 4670.  There are Youtube videos of it in an Advanced Dock, playing Crysis 2 at roughly 30fps.  Personally I'd lean more towards the Powercolor, but that's just me.  Thanks in advance. System Specs:Lenovo T61 6465-01U6GB RamWindows 7 Home Premium x64Thinkpad Advanced Dock Note: I hope this is the right section to post this.  I figured since it was T61 related, it might belong here.  Sorry if it doesn't.

Answer:Thinkpad Advanced Dock won't read SDHC cards? & Video Card Recommendation?

If you have heard that the PowerColor AX6570 or the ATI Radeon HD 4670 works in the ThinkPad Advanced Dock, then I would recommend going with that, as finding a low-profile single-slot video card that fits into the dock and works in it may be difficult.
Given the era in which the ThinkPad Advanced Dock was designed, it may only support SD cards via the card reader.  I would  suggest attaching an SDHC card reader via one of the USB ports, or perhaps via the CardBus or ExpressCard ports, if those aren't being used.

Greetings. Newbie to forum here. I have been using a PNY Optima SDHC 8GB card with my Canon 60D for about 10 months with no problems. Today I downloaded photos onto my pc, put the card back in my camera to reformat and use again today at a shoot, and camera says, "No Card in Camera". I took the 8 GB card out, put a smaller card in, camera reads it fine. Put the 8GB card back in my pc, pc reads it fine.
Is there an average lifespan for these cards?

Answer:Canon 60D will not read PNY Optima SDHC 8GB

There should not be a short lifespan to solid state media but their will be some issues with the contacts on the card as they can wear out over time and large usage.

I feel that this maybe a formatting issue, so while I would normally state only format the cards in the camera of use, what I would try in your case is to format the card via your PC (what Windows version you using BTW) then re-format in the camera.

Also a small trick I learned while working for Kodak is to use an eraser to clean the cards contacts as they maybe dirty, but this may not be the case as the card reads in the PC ok but still worth a try.

I have read to disable the sdhc host but when my card readers are plugged in i cant see anything that says "sdhc host" but did disable and then reenable the card reader itself.
I also read about uninstall of generic sd/mmc usb device but that did not fix the problem also.

I've had a time of it with Hardware and Software support trying to get an answer and hope someone here might have had the same issue. I've had a H405 7723-1AU  for about three weeks now. I've been using SD and MicroSD cards in the Media Reader with no problems. I popped in a brand new Transcend SDHC 16GB (Class 10) card today and it doesn't get recognized. I've installed the Realtek USB driver from the disk - it previously had the MS generic driver - to 6.1.7600.30116 3/12/2010 but it still doesn't work. The machine "acts like" it's going to read (well, the hard drive light show a lot of activity when it's inserted) but then it just sits there... To test the card I hooked up my 5+ year old SanDisk USB reader and it reads all the cards; SD, MicroSD with SD adapter, and SDHC just fine... slow transfer though. Lenovo Software Support thinks it's a bad Media Reader, and of course, Lenovo Warranty thinks it's a driver issue. Any ideas from an experienced user? Thanks in advance!

hey tpillars, since both generic driver and the Realtek that came with the disc did not work, could you go to this link and try this driver > try this too >>

last year I have bought a Satellite L40 Series and a Windows Vista was installed on it. I found everything worked properly.

Since I found that Windows Vista is kinda slower than XP, I downgraded it into Windows XP and I installed manually all drivers. Everything works well until I found that I can read only SD-card with the Ricoh Card Reader on my laptop. With Windows Vista it could read SD and SDHC.

Since all of my files saved in SDHC, I really want to solve this matter.

I detected on the computer that my card reader hardware is :

Ricoh Memory Stick Host controller (
Ricoh MMC Host COntroller (
Ricoh XD Picture Card Host Controller ( /

The questions are :
1. Can the card reader read SDHC with Windows XP platform?
2. If yes, what should I do with it? Maybe I have to install a new driver? (If yes, where can I find it?)

Thank you for your concern. I am really glad if you can help me to solve this matter.

Normally the Satellite L40 can read SDHC cards up to 8GB so my question is have you tried different brands of SDHC cards?
I have good experience with Kingston and SanDisk cards.

I recently upgraded to Windows 10 when installing a new Samsung SSD 850 EVO 500GB and now my internal SD card reader which I think is a Ricoh will not work when I insert a SD above 4GB, it works for smaller cards.  I have tried installing the drivers from the Lenovo KB and my Windows Troubleshooter says all drivers for that device are up to date.  One thing that I have noticed is that when I insert the card the Ricoh device pops up, but also responds with an uninstalled PCI Serial Port.  I do not know what device this is, but it doesn't show up unless an SDHC card is inserted and remains after I take it out, but when I do a restart it has disappeared and it is not there if I insert a 4gb SD card first.  Another thing I have noticed is that the card does pop up in the Disk Management utility, but it is unreadable.  I have checked the card on cameras and a friend's computer and know that it works and is not corrupted.  See pics below and the PCI serial port ID # and you can see my frustration... hopefully someone can help fix this issue, I need to read SDHCs for work all the time and would prefer not to have to buy a peripheral device to do the job...

Do you know if the Satellite 2450-114 windows XP home supports reading SDHC with the latest drivers, and the max capacity supported?

Answer:Can Satellite 2450-114 read SDHC with the latest drivers?

The Satellite 2450-114 is an oldie and in my opinion it would not support the SDHC card even using latest drivers? why?
Because the card support does not depends on software/driver but this is a simple hardware limitation (card reader)

Therefore I would recommend using an external USB card reader? such readers are not expensive and easy in use?

Does anyone know if this model with Windows XP home SP3 can read SDHC cards in particular 8GB or 16GB SD cards?

Or does anyone know if there is a driver update or firmwire update that will allow this card reader to read these types of cards

Answer:Satellite M110 PSMBOA - Does it read 8GB or 16GB SDHC cards

What does the user manual said?
Did you check this?

For me it looks like Toshiba Australian notebook series.
I searched in the manual which I?ve found on the Toshiba Australian page and it says that these cards are supported:

*SD* 8MB, 16MB, 32MB, 64MB, 128MB, 256MB, 512MB, 1GB, 2GB
*MMC* 8MB, 16MB, 32MB, 64MB, 128MB, 256MB, 512MB, 1GB
*MS* 8MB, 16MB, 32MB, 64MB, 128MB
*MS Pro* 256MB, 512MB, 1GB, 2GB, 4GB
*xD* 16MB, 32MB, 64MB, 128MB, 256MB, 512MB, 1GB, 2GB

As you see the SDHC cards are NOT supported.

I have a DVD/CD RW Combo Drive from NEC (NEC ND-2500a).

The drive used to work without any problems, however, it started giving me some issues that I was hoping to get some help with.

The drive reads CDs just fine, but when I try to put in a DVD (either movie or data), the drive will not recognize that a DVD is in the drive. It eventually times out. But - I can take that same DVD and plug it into another computer and it works fine.

I have deleted the DVD from the XP Pro Device manager and it was reinstalled the next time I booted, but I still have the same problem.

Any ideas why the drive would read CDs just fine, but choke on reading a DVD?

Thanks in advance for any help...

Hello all, I could use some help.

My laptop is a Compaq Evo N1015v, running Windows XP Professional SP2. Currently, I can read CD, CDRs, CDRWs and such all fine, but cannot read ANY DVDs, including burns and movies.

The device is listed as "Compaq DVD-ROM GDR8081N" in the Device Manager. I've uninstalled/reinstalled, uninstalled and rebooted and reinstalled, removed the IDE drivers and reinstalled, and searched via google for some possible other solutions.

When I insert a DVD, it acts likes it is reading it, hums three times real fast, and then nothing. CDs, on the other hand, start right up.

Any help you folks can provide would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

hi guys,

I had someone burn a set of dvds with data on them, and mail them to me...
I tried them on a pc and a mac but they could not be read... the drive would try and try but could not read anything of the disk.
so i sent them back, thinking maybe they were not burned right or not finalized but the guy who is a tech expert says they are fine, and tried them on multiple pcs and they opened...

any ideas? is there something that i can download (the equivalent of a video codec for dvd data for example?)

the disks are DVD-R 16x 4.7G and right now i am using an HP lightscribe drive that should be +/- R ( it says R/RW/R+DL)

Answer:cannot read DVDs... but the disks are fine!

I wish you put the exact model you have. Hm.. Indeed, maybe your DVD drive does NOT read -R/RW/DL disks though that type of a drive is probably not very easy to find. A box for my DVD drive says DVD+/-RW not just + .

Only another possibility I could think of.. though unlikely is .. some computers from Dell etc come with what is called Drive Letter Access or DLA. Basically once a disc is formated, you can use the disc like a floppy disk. You open the disc from My Computer and just drug and drop files you wanna save on it. It doesn't require you to have Roxio or Nero to burn data disks if your computer has DLA installed. But from my experineces, computers that do NOT have DLA have difficulty reading some discs burned with DLA on another computer even when the discs are closed / finalized. It's unlikely but possible that the shipper used DLA to burn the discs and your computer doesn't have DLA.
Either way, to my knowledge, there's nothing you can do to get your own DVD drive read the discs if it's not mean to read the tyep of disks you got or it's the DLA issue. The only thing you can do is to transfer their contents to another computer's hard drive whose drive can see the contents, and burn another set of DVD+R disks with the contents on that computer using Roxio or Nero.

(Just a though... it'll take a while for your computer to read the dics after you pop them in your dirve... in case you are the impatient type... Also, if you inst... Read more

Hi, I am trying to update an elderly couple's computer for them with their copy of MS Office among other things, but this drive doesn't see anything on the disc. It is a back up disk, but we have the number still and the disc reads fine on my computers. I have tried uninstalling the CD drivers 3 times, restoring the computer to earlier times, updating the firmware and now I have nothing else to try.

It does read some copied video discs and even copies discs with files, but not all. I have even tried other brands, but there is no logic as to what is 'seen' and not seen.

Thanks for your help, Experts!!!

I have an eMachine 600IS for a few months (10 gigs, 600mhz, and 159ram). The (Samsung)Cdrom has always been working fine (until yesterday) but now it just wouldn't read anything. I know it is still recognizable by the system but when I load a cd-rom in, it prompts "please insert a disc into Drive D:" I then check the the cds and they are all fine (no scratch or dirty). Can you please help?

Answer:{SOLVED} My CDROM is fine, it just wouldn't read

Hi Lbishop
If you have a windows 98 boot disk you can do a quick test to see if you have a hardware or software problem. Boot off the windows 98 disk and pick start computer with cdrom support. Then with a good cd in your drive (like your 98CD) enter DIR D: The drive should try to read and give you a listing of the files on the CD. If you get an error probably your CDROM drive is bad. You could try it in a different computer to make sure. If it is only a few months old it may still be under warenty.
Good Luck

So it all started out a while ago. i got a virus on my xp side of my 160gb HDD. (other side is D: (windows 7) )
the virus wouldnt let me see the clock or run any programs pretty much. i couldnt run control panel to *enable* system restore while being on safe mode will nto let me sys restore. ive tried putting in new registrey keys etc...
i ran avg and delted the virus. the windows 7 parititon of the drive worked fine. i then proceeded to format drive c and eventually reinstall xp. i tried formatting C and got the error that it was in use but i proceeded anywayz. the format did not work. and the bar underneath the bottom (that says the disk space) was gone and when i tried to open up the c drive it told me it needed to be formatted and that was not possible. i then restarted the computer and got the message ctrl alt dlete restat. i have checked my bios and the HDD is being detected and first on boot priority.
its an eee pc, so it does not have a disk drive. ( i have a portable but do not have the xp recovery cd with me) (* i kinda need it done soon)
i dont understand why it wont just boot w7. I DO NOT WANT TO LOOSE the files in w7!! i could care less about the files in the xp side. is their a way to do this without hte recovery cd and without formatting the w7 drive at all? Hello Kieonsegg,

I am taking that this is a desktop ?

This is your issue

Your (D) drive needs your (C) drive to get to the point so you can tell it to load and since your (C) is corrupt you will not be able to get into your (D) drive for it works from the master boot record of the (C) drive , so this makes both drives non-accessible technically

What you need to do to get your files is but a tool from a repair shop near you or from a online store / this tool should only cost you from $20 to $30 depending on where you buy it

You will need another computer with 2.0 highspeed usb ports but this will work on slower usb ports

You will need to remove the drive from the computer and atach to the tool then hook it up to the working computer and then you will be able to access the drive as if its an exsternal drive and recover your files and explore the (D) drive

Here is a link to the type of tool you will need

I have this very one and it works awsome and with any type of hard drive

Also you will need to follow this link so that you can download a program to erase the drive (zero it out & make it like new ) so you can have no issues when reformating and partitioning

You will want the (dos & window suite) Killdisk (free) version 5.1 and have the ability to make a bootable cd rom disk

Let me know how it goes

On my gigabit network, I can write to my file server (Fedora Core 6 running samba) very fast, but copying files from it is extremely slow (100Mbit or less). My other winXP laptop (also gig) can transfer in both directions fine, and FTP worked fine on my desktop when i tried it. I am at a loss to explain this, I shut down my firewall just to be sure, but my laptop has the same software on it, so that did not seem likely, and indeed, did nothing. So, as it stands:

Server: all fine, since laptop and FTP work
HD - fine, FTP worked
network - fine, FTP worked
windows explorer: not entirely messed up, since write works fine

Are there any services that I should check to ensure they are working properly?

Answer:WinXP filesharing - write is fine, read is painfully slow

Try uninstalling your current antivirus for a test and try it.

Note that just turning it off won't cut the mustard. Most never really 'turn off'.

Hi, I bought an older Asus motherboard from colleague that already had the cpu and ram installed, I purchased a WD 320 ide hardrive and built the computer with some other spare parts. Like I said the hardware is older(sorry I don't remember exactly what the amd socket is or more on the MB as it has no OS on it currently) but I wanted to see how vista did on it, It installed fine and worked pretty well but it was still rather slow. So i put the xp cd in and booted from that, it loaded up and proceeds to format and set up the files, it then restarts and right after the press any key to boot from cd it gives me a disc read error and tells me to press ctrl alt dlt to restart. Try it again and still the same thing, reinstalled vista and it worked fine and installed properly, put the hard drive in another computer to format it from there and again tried to install xp on it and I get the same results I got before. I would really like to get Xp on here instead of vista but am at a loss on how to proceed. I installed Xp on a different computer with the same disc and it worked fine. Does anyone have any idea what is going on?

hey, my computer generally reads disks, music cd's, dvd's, and games (new like sims 3, and old like theme hospital and shogun total war)

ive just got anno 2070 and put in the disk, but its not recognizing it at all, when i first put the disk in, it whirs, as it knows there is a disk there, and a disk icon appears next to the cursor, but then nothing, no disk appears in My computer, and when i click on the drive it asks me to insert a disk, i have tested the disk on a different computer running vista, anno 2070 runs perfectly, and also says it does run on windows 7, i have also tested other disks since putting the game into the windows 7 computer, which work fine, and checked whether the disk can be read in a virtual machine (windows xp in this case), which it cant as i expected, i have run the Microsoft disk checker and all it said was that the disk was unreadable, but the vista computer proves it is readable.

any tips on what to do next? i really want to get playing this

Answer:dvd drive wont read specific disk, will read on other vista computer

I would think that your optical drive and that particular brand DVD media don't go together well. ( I have an Imation DVD+R DL that my Samsung drive only reads at times but not most of the time. On four other drives - a Sony, a Liteon, an Asus and a Plextor - the media is recognised and accessible without any problems. The Samsung drive is clean, has the latest firmware, can read and write other DVD media. So where am I? )

You may just try cleaning the lense with a Lense Cleaner CD. If it does not help, try burning anno 2070 to another known-to-be-good brand media at a lower speed.

When apply and look it is back to read only.

How can I make this read and write permission?

Answer:public tv folder read only? mythtv needs read write persmissions

You can do this by going into the C:>Users>Public folder properties, click the Sharing tab then click on the Advanced Sharing button showing in the first picture.

Click the box to share the folder like in the second picture, at that point the Permissions button will light up.

Click the permissions button, Add check marks for full control "third picture" then hit the Apply button, on all windows click Ok etc.

At this point the Public folder and it's subfolder will have read/write access.

Hey there...ok...I have some files that are saved from the Macs at school...when I take them home to my PC (Win) they don't have the extensions on them...when I originally save something from Windows and take it to a Mac and modify and save it then take it back to my PC it still has the extension and keeps it since it was added by Windows...

So I am wondering there a program for Windows that recognizes Mac files and andds the extensions back??? I hate when I start work on some things at school and have to add the extensions to all the stuff I created when I take it back guess is the Macs store the extensions or what the file opens up with or whatever in their "._(filename)" files...that's annoying too...for every file you have another is created with a "._"...

Any help on this??? THANX

Answer:Files saved from Macs don't have ext.'s when read on Win. Need sftwre 2 read & convrt

I've never had that problem. If you save it as a "xxx" type document it doesn't matter if you have the software that created it on both Mac and PC (or software that can read the format) so I don't know how/what is going on with your situation.

BTW my experience is with using Word (forgot which version but it's on OS X) on a Mac and OpenOffice on my PC.

Answer:Hard Drive canNOT Be Read, Computer won't boot. Read Error

Hi malpert and welcome to the TechSpot Forum

As a laptop only has the ability to support 1 harddrive your option is to remove the drive from the laptop and connect it to a desktop PC using a 2.5" to 3.5" adaptor and try to read the files on it, however I would download the test tools from the makers website and run a thorough test on the drive to ensure readability of the drive.

Remember though if the drive has failed mechanically then any data may be lost and you will need to use one of the professional data recovery services such as "ontrack data recovery" to get it back.

Ok I just spent about three hours looking in this forum to solve my problem and no dice.

Here it goes: I'm running xp pro and I have a Norcent RW-481 48x12x48 CDRW probably not the best brand but oh well. I'm using Nero 6, InCD is not installed.

The problem: It does not recognize any data CD's or any CD's that the drive itself writes. I can play an audio CD, which elimates (I think) that the read lense is dirty and I can burn a CD, which elimates (I think) that my burn lense is dirty. I'm mentioning dirty lenses because a post in this forum suggested that a dirty lense may be the problem. So, before taking things apart I wanted to post in the forum the problem. Any other suggestions of what else I can look for?

More info: I even switched around the jumpers from cable select to master, same result.

I really believe I have a setting wrong in my XP pro operating system. Any suggestions????? :cronfused:

Lastly, The drive is recognized corectly in device manager

Maybe there is dust on the lens of the CD/DVD drive so I recommend cleansing the lens.

Further you should try to remove the upper and lower filters in registry. This does often solve with the CD/DVD drive so check the workaround on the Microsoft website:

In worst case the CD/DVD drive must be replaced :(

Hi, I'm sort of new to forums, but I have a bit of a pickle, I have a red shield with a white x in it that resembles the windows defender icon in my system tray, when I hover over it it says "Your computer is infected !" It is recommended to load update to prevent data loss. Windows will now download and install the most up-to-date software for you. Click here to protect your computer."

I followed all the directions in the read & run me first thread, and nothing seemed to help, I'm attaching all the logs except counterspy as I couldn't find a way to get it to output a log in text format or anything, it said 0 malware found in everything except in my cookies there was 2 that it deleted.

Hello everyone. I've recently reinstalled Windows 7 (two, three days ago) and I'm having a problem with my World of Warcraft Addons. I'm thinking the problem is due to parts of my World of Warcraft folder being read only. In the Properties menu of the folder, the "read only" check box is not checked but filled in with a little blue square. Now being a windows noob I'm not 100% sure, but I'm assuming that means it's read only. So I unchecked the box, pressed okay but if I open the Properties window again, it's still got the little blue box.

I've ran a few virus/malware scanners, and I don't seem to have anything. I've installed all of the Windows updates and I'm still having the same problem.

Thanks in advance everybody!

Answer:Read only folders revert back to read only

By default all folders with Files in them, the properties are Read Only (Only applies to Files in Folder) Meaning that if the actual file within the folder isn't Read Only, the rest of it isn't either. (test this theory on any other folders on your computer) so that is not your problem with WoW

Greetings. I would like to find out whether customers read my emails, but without obligating them to use a "read receipt" dialog box. Is there a way I can do this?

I know Constant Contact offers that as part of their service, but I would rather save the money.

Thanks in advance.

Answer:how can I confirm email read without using read receipt?

There are other ways to get confirmations, especially ones that spammers use, but I am not keen on posting them on the forums.

My computer is a Gateway GT5692, 64bit w/Windows Vista. Recently I had to reinstall Windows. Now everything seems to work but that I can't read SDHC cards anymore. It used to work fine. I can plug in the SDHC card in the "Digital Media Manager". The led lights up, but the computer does nothing. I look on the drives page which normally lights up and nothing happens.

Also, I have 2 card readers USB'd to this computer. When I try to read an SDHC card from them, I get the same result. On one, I get the led to light up, but not on the other. Strange.

This is not the card. I tried 2 different cards; a 4GB SDHC and a 512 MB SD card. Same result.

So I'm thinking the driver?? But just which driver do I reinstall?

Any help would be real nice.

Answer:Not Reading SDHC or SD Cards-(Others Fine!)

Hiya Drummmer,try this.

I'm slightly a bit confused but to my USB's history, (That only just reformatted on Windows 10 like yesterday from a previous state of being a "Bootable disk".) I plugged it into my coworker's windows 10 computer getting expected results of what a 16 GB flash drive should have got, but when I'm plugging it into my work station tower, (which unfortunately suffers a lot of where and tear on the USB ports most especially, but otherwise have clear distinct working ones regardless.) show's no results on the file explorer's end, but as you see included in this post, is clearly visible otherwise to the tower itself as a USB thumb drive. Appearing to have the same results on my partner's workstation tower as well. Obviously I've only yet to test this out further on other machines, but this has me a bit confused, annoyed, nervous, and angry you know? I have files to transfer manually to people on a quick moment's notice to some machines that are offline to the network, and suddenly this little predicament comes this way. (Doesn't help that the machines here need to have been replaced/fixed/thrown out a long time ago,) I'm just mottled by the whole thing you know?

Also To my knowledge, the hard drive has automatically been disabled in turn for server based logins. So these Logins are technically "virtual" to all I know. Assuming that affects any of this in anyway.

Answer:USB read Perfectly fine On Windows 10, but is only "Noticed" on Win7

Open Device Manager, show hidden devices and delete any remnants of USB drives that have not been ejected in USB devices and drives. Does not matter about if you think that the computers need to be changed. Some of us have computers over ten years old that are still working fine.

Hi, does anyone know of an external PCMCIA card reader/writer that meets the specifications below:

• can read/write
• supports 3.3V/5V 16-bit PCMCIA cards
• type II PC card slot
• can read/write to a wireless LAN card or a modem card or an Ethernet LAN card
• works with Windows OS’s

My whole objective is to be able to use my Sony Ericsson GC82 EDGE PC card on my desktop computer (I’m looking for an external drive solution).

Even if your device does or does not meet all these specifications or you are not sure if it does, still respond to me with the drive that you think may meet my objective.

Much appreciated.

Notebook Satellite U200-165, Win XP home,
I got in 2006, all this time there wasn't any problem with my mmc cards.
Yeasterday installed WinXP pro, installed drivers: flash media driver and SD secure module and card reader don't read MMC cards

Help, please!

Answer:Satellite U200-165: Card reader don't read MMC cards but reads SD card

What do you mean exactly by ?MMC card doesn?t work??
What is card reader status in device manager?

I checked the user manual (can be downloaded from the Toshiba page) and it says the MMC cards are definitely supported.
I think this must be a software issue.

In your case I would recommend updating the Win XP to the latest state and to reinstall the Flash Media Driver and SD Secure Module again?

I have aLexmark memory card reader that I use with my memomry cards for my digital cameras. I just bought a new M 1G FujiFilm xD card. It said on the package that it is compatible with most cameras, and I didn't give it much thought since I have a Fuji camera.

Well, today I put the card in the reader and it won't read the card. Is there a way to chance properties of the reader so it can read it, or do I need a newer memory card reader because of the new "M" thing? If I need a new one, does anyone have any suggestions on which readers work with the newer cards? Thanks

Answer:Memory card reader problem- won't read new xd card

The media card reader in my Studio XPS 8100 will not read a miniMMC card. Other cards work fine. The card works fine in other readers. I tried updating the driver with R245429.exe, but the problem persists. Is that the correct file for the latest drivers? Do I need to replace the reader? It's a Foxconn card reader, FITI PID9106--right? I need help in troubleshooting this problem. Thanks.

I've recently had the motherboard replaced and now the SD card reader ignores my 2Gb cards, but still recognises a 128Mb one.

An explanation or fix would be much appreciated.

Answer:SD card reader wont read a 2Gb card in Qosmio F10

Hmmm? did you try to reinstall the SD host controller driver and the SD memory card driver?
Please note that the SD host controller driver should be installed first.
After installing the SD host controller driver, you can install the SD memory card driver.

Answer:Card reader does not read 1 GB card - Satellite M40X

As far as I know this unit supports:
SD card - Capacity 8/16/32/64/128/256/512MB
MMC Card - Capacity 8/16/32/64/128/256MB
xD-picture card - Capacity 4/8/16/32/64/128/256/512MB

It reads no Compact Flash cards.

Unfortunately it doesn?t support any 1 GB cards

Hello there, this is my first time using the sd card slot on my laptop, and well today i inserted a card into my laptop but it just doesnt read!!!. The card type "XD" is also supported by this laptop but it doesnt show anything once i place the card i dont even know what to look for.

What am i looking for and why isnt this darn thing working lol!!

Answer:cannot read sd card-please help

Nothing's listed as "Removable Drive" in My Computer? Do they work in your camera or another card reader (try an external card reader that plugs in via USB...they're fairly cheap for the multi-type card readers). If the cards work, but you're not seeing anything, you could have a dead reader in your laptop. Either that, or try to find updated drivers for it.

MY Hp desktop running Win XP (5 years old) will not read the new sd hc card from my new camera. I tried to get a hot-fix from microsoft, but upon extracting it informs me that my SP3 is newer than the fix, so it is unnecessary. Any help or ideas would be appreciated. Thanks

Answer:can't read sd hc card

Check the HP site and see if there is an update for the card reader. If not, then the reader isn't compatible with SDHC cards.

If this is the case, you can use a USB cable to connect the camera to the PC, or buy a USB SDHC reader.

Hope this helps.

It will only read through HDMI. why is this? i have everything plugged in. my vga to dvi adaptor is in. and dvi is connected to monitor but it will only detect in HDMI. im trying to hook up my xbox to monitor but if DVI wont work i dont want to keep switching HDMI clabes.
please dont mention a hdmi switcher cuz its too much atm
any help?
is it because i have the dvi and hdmi plugged in at the same time?

Answer:Card will not read through DVI

The HDMI and DVI are both digital inputs. The monitor will auto detect either analog or digital, but when the HDMI is connected, it becomes the default digital source. Disconnect the HDMI cable from the monitor, and see if the DVI doesn't display now. A Guy
