I have symbols instead of letters!

Question: I have symbols instead of letters!

It's like my laptop has been taken over by a strange font! It was fine and then suddenly everything is symbols. It is a Samsung laptop running Windows 7, I can't access anything like 'restore' or run a diagnostic because I can't see what it says! Please help! Thank you!

Preferred Solution: I have symbols instead of letters!

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: I have symbols instead of letters!

Restart in safe mode with networking (usually F8 during start up). Run System Restore from there and then run Malwarebytes to make sure it was not caused by an infection and to be sure it does not return. You have to be a little bit crazy to keep you from going insane.

German symbols are replaced on websites by other letters and symbols. For example, the Euro sign is replaced by a rectangle and the letters with the German Umlaut are replaced by unknown letters. What can I do? Thanks, DresEdit: Moved topic from XP to the more appropriate forum. ~ Animal

I've tried to do a system restore, but it says that there is no previous restore point. I tried to restart the system with a previous image, but it says there is no previous system image. So I couldn't do that either. Someone suggested I run a check on driver C go to properties...but this message with a red x shows up that I can't do that either... Help me please.

I have a computer running Windows XP Professional. Something has changed some of the letters in a program to squares and symbols. When you open CorelDraw, then try to open a project you can not read the name of the project because it has changed to squares. I ran malwarebytes ,superantispyware and hitmanpro they found only cookies. In those programs some of the words have changed to squares. Google searches only talk about languages, it is not the problem. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Answer:Letters changed to symbols.

Answer:no letters only symbols on my computer

Hello and welcome to Computer Hope Forum. My name is Dave. I will be helping you out with your particular problem on your computer. 1. I will be working on your Malware issues. This may or may not solve other issues you have with your machine.2. The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for this issue on this machine.3. If you don't know or understand something, please don't hesitate to ask.4. Please DO NOT run any other tools or scans while I am helping you.5. It is important that you reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.6. Your security programs may give warnings for some of the tools I will ask you to use. Be assured, any links I give are safe.7. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear. If you can't access the internet with your infected computer you will have to download and transfer any programs to the computer you're using now and transfer them to the infected computer with a CD-RW or a USB storage device. I prefer a CD because a storage device can get infected. If you use a storage device hold the shift key down while inserting the USB storage device for about 10 secs. You will also have to transfer the logs you receive back to the good computer using the same method until we can get the computer back on-line. ********************************************************Two questions. Do you have your OS Disk? Can you start in Safe Mode?Safe Mode

Writing this from another computer--all English words, every letter, have been changed to symbols on my PC screen (Windows XP, Dell 8100). I can't restore to an earlier stage, as nothing is readable--every letter, even under icons--has become a symbol (squares, circles, half-boxes, "X," question marks, etc.).

So my father went on a rampage and deleted a bunch of random files in his C-drive of his laptop,
and emptied the recycle bin. The next time he switches on the laptop all letters are gone. As if the system
is missing the language feature - everything where there should be letters / symbols belonging to a language,
it's messed up symbols + signs.

How may I re-install them? Already tried a backup, didn't do a difference. One thing I have noticed, however, is that he has Comodo System Utilities installed, and everytime on boot (black screen straight after HP logo) it says that's doing something. However, he didn't use the program to delete, just the delete bottom and "empty recycle bin." Then I have tried restoring deleted files via Tune Up Utilities, still no help.
Finally I've spammed F2 at the HP logo screen on startup and doing system checks. Any other suggestions - what if I get a Windows Vista Service pack and install, will this return the missing symbols for the language?

Recently I've had this problem with my browser (or comp, I'm not sure if I'm missing a font or what). On some webpages the fonts show up as weird letters with symbols. I have two screenshots. And just a few weeks ago these web pages were working fine. I have two accounts on my computer. I use Firefox on both. On one account, it works fine, on the other I get the weird font. So it's not the webpage.

Maybe it is Unicode. web sites use Chinese and other fonts that need Unicode. If your browser does not get it right, you get symbol soup.

Ok, so I had Windows XP Home Edition Service Pack 2, but I wanted Professional because I heard it takes advantage of the dual core thing when Home doesn't, so I installed Windows XP Professional Media Center Edition 2005 and then upgraded to Service Pack 2. I didn't do anything on the computer before upgrading to Service pack 2, except register the computer and things, which I found out my problem. When entering my Email, instead of the @ sign coming up, the " sign came up.. here is a list of the keys that shouldn't be coming out when the button(s) is/are pressed(Note, I have an American Keyboard and an American copy of Windows):

Shift+'[email protected]
Not this / but the other slash=#
Shift+Not this / but the other slash=~

Is there anything known to fix this? Because this is getting very annoying, and I just want my keyboard to be normal lol.

Any help would be greatly appreciated

I have an Acer Chromebook and recently spilled some water on it.  In my panic, I quickly wiped down the keyboard and all was still well and working.  I noticed then that whenever I tried to type anything, completely different letters or numbers or random symbols would show up.  I'm guessing that as I wiped down the keys and pressed them down at once, it did something to change the keyboard.  And to add to this problem, I can't even sign into my laptop as it's password protected, and I can't type my password in correctly.  Is this something that I can fix myself easily?

Hi linscrawf,
Here is an article with 2 ways of performing a powerwash before signing into Chrome.
This should reset the device (removing any unsaved data) and any potential settings or key combo's that you may have it.
It still requires some keystrokes, but they shouldn't also intiate other keystrokes. If they are, or after performing the powerwash you still have this issue it would likely indicate that the liquid spill is affecting the circuity below and multiple keystrokes are being detected.
I hope this helps,Cory

I downloaded PC Mighty Max to help with an AcroPDF.dll problem I've been having for a while.  After running that, Windows will no longer boot up. It took PC Mighty Max almost 20 hours to run through system scan.  It said I had problems with my directory.  After completing system scan, all text is no symbols and unreadable shapes and lines.  Not sure if PC Mighty Max is responsible but this all occurred after running the system scan.  It looks like Egyption hieroglyphics now.  I can boot up in Safe Mode but can't read any of the text to go to system restore to an earlier time.  Boot up with last good settings doesn't work either.  I can put in the boot disk (DVD) and select command prompt.  It gives me an A: prompt but I can't get out of the A:  I try to secect C: (my hard drive) but it says C: is an invalid directory.  All I can get is A: and B: in DOS.  After a period of inactivity, screen saver will come on and work.  Only readable text are Windows logo and Icon images.  Text below Icons is a jumbled mess of symbols, partial letters, triangles and lines.  I can get to the page where you can select Owner or Administrator but I only recognize the page; I can't read any of the text.  My computer isn't acting right and I'm not sure even if I could navigate to the restore to earlier time that it would work.  I don't want to have to reload/overwrite ev...  Have windows XP. This once happened to me from downloading UTube documentaries. I just restored from a prior date. Then ran a Anti Program and all kinds of garbage showed up.
Now it has happened again and it has wiped out my restore points. Nothing showed up when I ran another Anti Program. When I Try to install A new Anti Program it reboots the Computer even in Safe Mode. Unfortunately I don't have the XP disc to restore ( is there anywhere to downloaded 1). Tried to find the restore points navigating with another XP laptop in the hard-dive Program files. Couldn't find them.  This Computer is a PC not hooked up to the internet.
At this point I'm thinking of zeroing out the hard-dive and going to 2000. What a loss.

I have the Gateway NE56R12u 15.6-Inch Laptop
OS: Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit SP1

A few drops of water was spilled onto my keyboard (I don't think the water got down into the laptop... as far as I could tell the water landed on top of the keys, but I could be wrong) and when I went to clean it, I didn't think ahead and turn it off before cleaning up the spill. So many keys were pressed and now the keyboard is not functioning correctly. When I press the majority of the keys, they will either add other letters/symbols, or they will trigger Windows shortcuts.

As an example..
B = "B (it also brings up the right click menu) (this will also bring up this: symbol as well as times)
O = 7i7o0
L = *L{YK

M = HM

k= yk*

j = brings up googlechrome downloads

i = takes curser to the start of the text

The space key types b ' and brings up the right click menu.

7 brings up the "open file" shortcut

and so on

Some keys are working properly: a c d e f g q r s t v w x z

I browsed google a little to see if anyone else has had this problem. A big fix was pressing the FN button and the NumLock at the same time. That didn't work. Which, I doubted it would since my laptop has a full keyboard.

Is it possible that it's stuck on some sort of sticky keys or toggle keys setting?

I don't know if this is a software or a hardware issue, but using the onscreen or an exter... Read more

How can I fix my my letters writing numbers and letters-glued s one command?

Some of the things I have done:
I have also done some additional runs with other software, windows update and one more malware-am.
Went through several checks of all my settings as well. I may have missed something of course...
But I have not been able to fix my letters writing numbers and letters-glued as one command like this:
y7, t4
and backspace, shift are running other commands.

I have shifted language keyboards [I found info about that in one of your forums-posts].
I have installed, updated language.

I have no malware or virus anywhere.
Malware, Trojan virus did probably create these problems but the malware-virus are gone but the messed up problems are left.

I think they hacked me through Outlook and remotely through a Cisco router which seems to be attached to my PC, when I run AVAST network, but I can't find it anywhere on my PC nor do I have any router.
Now, can you suggest which forum or thread I can check next to find any solutions to my problems?

Thanks, for any help, truly appreciated.

I have seen these symbols <> used around a word. For example: <items>, <flagged>, <subject>

What does it mean?

Answer:What does these symbols<> mean?

they are used for a number of applications

Mathmatically they mean

< less than
> greater than
<> not equal to (excel)

They are also used for web pages code - HTML as tags

and so in word you may have seen the HTML - webpage code

They can also be used for a mail merge , where the information is taken from a database and the <> are used as fields
and so where the word document has <subject> this will be filled from a database and so can be changed for each letter

hope that helps

Question: Symbols and Logos

What is it with the modern trend of some organisations/movements hi-jacking well known symbols or icons and using them for their own? You?d think that with instant world wide comms it would be relatively easy for PR people to get a new logo quickly accepted world wide, but some seem to be too lazy or incompetent. Some examples off the top of my head for instance. The red rose has always been the national flower of England or a symbol of love. These days you would avoid anybody wearing a red rose like the plague, in case it?s a Labour politician pressing the flesh!Similarly the daffodil has for years been Wales? national flower, but it has now been hijacked for some charity in order to make money. The two minutes silence is traditionally to remember those who died mainly in two world wars. Now it seems that every time there is a serious plane or rail crash we are expected to pass a dutiful silence, thereby cheapening the whole concept, and the memory of the tens of thousands who died. For generations the yellow ribbon has symbolised the fact you have somebody away at war, but we are now expected to wear it in remembrance of the little girl missing in Portugal, even though, in this particular instance, there is already a lovely symbol of remembrance of all missing children, world wide, the Forget-Me-Not.I'm sure other people are aware of other examples.Don?t get me wrong, I?ve nothing against any of theses organisations/movements per se, nor against overt advertising su... Answer:Formatting symbols

Hi Meebers. With a word document open select "Insert" from the menu bar & then click on "Symbol" which will drop down a list, select more Symbols & you will see that symbol as I have shown in the snip shot.

You will see that that symbol you are querying is for currency.

You can search through the various symbols whenever you need to workout any particular one. I can't supply a list as I think it would be too difficult to try & find all of them at any given time.

Answer:Symbols seen as boxes

Hi confused 92

For re-enabling languages, see the Microsoft Knowledge Base Article ---

It's also likely that as a result of your reformat, you have lost some of the fonts previously added by certain programs. Reinstalling those programs will restore those fonts again. Office suites, publishing programs, photo programs --- all add quite a few fonts.

Best of luck

I am only looking for the meaning of the symbols that sometimes pop up. I have been signed up for for a year or so, and have used it often, but now I am getting a symbol of a computer screen with a red x on it and it wont let me in. I would really like a list of symbols and their meanings so maybe I can fix this myself, I am sorry I am not very computer smart, simple things are confusing to me sometimes

Thanks, Sharon

Answer:symbols and meanings

Not sure if this is what you are referring to, or not.

Smart Computing Tech Support

Red X's will typically appear for one of the following reasons: 1) a link to an image has changed, 2) a link to an image has been removed, or 3) your email client or browser is unable to display that type of image.

In the case of the first two instances, the image will need to be reinserted in order to appear. This may be a problem on the sender or host's side. In that case, it may be helpful to notify the host that the image is missing from his/her email or Web site.

In the case of a browser or email client unable to display images, there is typically a setting which would allow a user to turn the display of graphics OFF, which would cause the X's to appear. To fix this, place your mouse cursor over the obstructed image and right-click your mouse. If available, select the Show Picture link to see if the image reappears.

Question: Symbols, not words

Today's glitch of never ending ones in my computer.
Pulled up a file I have in My Documents. Get a screen with a lot of squares, commas, apostrophes, non-familiar symbols, but no text. File was (is) a MS Word document.
Is there a translator program or convertor needed, or is this all there is, and all there is going to be?

Answer:Symbols, not words

If you have Word 2007 or 2010 installed the document should open normally. Earlier versions cannot open a document created with 2007 or 2010. You should be able to get around this problem with Word Viewer.

Hello, and Welcome to the HP Support Community! Sounds as if you have selected an input language other than English. Go to the Control Panel, Region and Language; also check to see if your new keyboard has a language selection available that may need to be changed. You may need to reboot the PC to get the change to take affect.  WyreNut

Thanks for the information .... Personally, I have found HP Support Assistant (HPSA) to be more trouble than it is worth. On a brand new PC, it is probably most useful as HP is constantly putting out driver and BIOS updates for new machines, but on an older PC, especially one that was Upgraded to Win10, it is all but useless -- as HP is not putting out updates for the older PCs. If you want to troubleshoot HPSA, here is some information: HP PCs - Troubleshooting HP Support Assistant (Windows 10, 8) | HP Customer Support Good Luck========================================================================I am a volunteer and I do not work for, nor do I represent, HP.---------------------------------------------------------------If my posts helped you, please click the Thumbs-Up symbol to say thanks. If my posts solved your problem please click "Accept As Solution".========================================================================

Good day everyone. I'll start here; not sure which section this should be.
I'm using an ACER Aspire M1610, bought from a friend, but less than two years old. WIN XP SP2, using Avast 6 and Malwarebytes, updated daily.

When I press my quotation-mark key I get nothing - the second press gives me two symbols. This occurred on three keyboards, two of which were new. It has survived a reinstallation, done for other reasons. No virus, trojan, worm, rootkit or other nasty has been found recently.

Although this doesn't take long to correct I would be happier without it and would be grateful if anyone can help.

PS2 KB or USB?

first thing i might try is.. do this to show phantom devices in devmgmt
Device Manager Does Not Display Devices Not Currently Present in Windows 2000
and delete any phantoms

then check IRQ conflicts
IRQ Settings, how to view IRQ assignments and resolve IRQ conflicts

If everything checks out, if its a USB Kb... try a different USB slot thats not directly ontop of the one ur currently using. cause even if theres not Conflict, you can rule out an issue with that hub.

Also this happens with all aplications? or just sertain programs? like does it also happen in something as simple as notepad?

To whom it may concern (as I'm not sure if I'm in the correct forum section)

I was having some problems with viruses and what not and got some awesome advice on this forum as to getting rid of it. So far it seems to have worked. Problem I have now is that some of my icons are not appearing as they once were. It looks to be a generic Windows type icon. I will attach screen shots to show what I'm talking about.

ANY help in resolving this issue would be greatly appreciated.

- I tried uninstalling and re-installing the Blackberry Messenger and it still had the same problem with the icons.

-Thanks in advance,

I have a DeskJet 722C. I can't print certain symbols, such as an e with the long mark over it, even though it shows up correctly on the screen. I can print the same symbol on my old HP LaserJet II, but not this newer printer. I have the latest driver from HP for the 720 series. Is it just one of the quirks in this printer?

Answer:Can't print some symbols

Hi Roy,

See if your printer supports this option:

Change the Properties for the Printer
Some printers offer a font setting called Print TrueType as Graphics. If your printer provides this setting, try enabling this setting. For some printers, this may solve this problem. To enable the Print True Type as Graphics setting, follow these steps:
On the Start menu, point to Settings, and then click Printers. In the Printers dialog box, right-click your printer, and then click Properties.
In the Properties dialog box, click the Fonts tab. Click to select the Print TrueType As Graphics setting, and then click OK.

Question: strange symbols xp

all text on xp including welcome screen, desktop and dialog boxes has been replaced by strange symbols - boxes, rectangles, circles. Anyone know the fix?

It happened after I downloaded Netscape because IE had ceased to be available, I then got a series of blue screens which went away after I ran chkdsk/f.

The difficulty is that I cannot read the text to move around programs and dialog boxes to research possible fixes.

Answer:strange symbols xp

Fonts! Somehow, your fonts file has been deletedor otherwise made unavailable.

Been there, done that, got the teeshirt.

Copy a fonts folder from another XP machine and install it on yours. Make a test run on the other machine, without completing the installation, of course, so that, if you run into something that needs to be selected (which you cannot read), you will know which button to push.

I solved my, thanks to Waltside, who emailed a W2K font folder to me, in just the way I have described.

(I wonder if this isn't why IE became "unavailable").

Let us know what help you need in this!

Stylus often has a second cursor to the right of the normal dot - sometimes a thick cross, sometimes an arrow, etc. If I open the handwriting panel and tap it the stylus works properly. Not sure what to do - a re-install would be a major hassle, especially on a <1 month old laptop.

Hi, I recently bought a T430 and have noticed that the Fn key at the bottom left of the keyboard, and all the symbols on the Function keys (F1, F2 etc) at the top of the keyboard are almost invisible so that when I'm in a dimly lit room I can't see them at all.  As an example I recently wanted to decrease the brightness of my screen and wasn't sure which function key I needed, but I couldn't find it without actually lifting the laptop up and tilting it towards a light source.... which seems faintly ludicrious!  I know that I can turn on the little light at the top with Fn + Space, but that doesn't help... I still can't see the actual symbols on the Function keys.  I bought the laptop from eBay and although it seems to be in perfect working order I'm beginning to wonder if this is normal?  Any response to put my mind at ease would be greatly appreciated.... do other people have the same problem as me? Regards,David

Answer:Function Key Symbols

I have this problem too, this sort of layout change is counter productive. This is even worse in the Edge keyboard, where the Function key like F1, F2, etc are in red lettering.

Just wondering if anyone has ever experienced this problem before: In PowerPoint 97, I have a presentation containing 12 slides, and each slide contains a bulleted list. All of the slides bullets are formatted as "Normal Text", except for two of the slides in which the bullets are formatted as "Symbol". It is strange because the two slides in which the bullets are formatted as "Symbol", no bullets print out when the presentation is printed. I have checked all the print settings and nothing. I printed the same presentation from another computer, which is running PowerPoint 2000, and all the bullets printed. Is there a setting somewhere that I am missing. Any ideas???

Answer:PowerPoint 97 & Symbols

Check the fonts of the symbols you're using. They could be a font that exists on one PC and not on the other. If so, find out the name of the font, copy it from this PC (c:\windows\fonts folder) and put it onto the other PC (same location).

The problem is not specific to PowerPoint.

If you look in the fonts folder, some fonts are shown with the icon"T", some with "O". According to the Windows (non) help file, there is now something called "Open" fonts in addition to the old stand-bys, True Type fonts. It's not much of a stretch to understand these icons even if I don't understand "Open" fonts. However, some of the fonts have little shortcut-like arrows on their icons, but these don't seem to be shortcuts to font files stored in a different directory; these fonts are evidently in the \WINDOWS\Fonts directory with all the other fonts. What do these arrows mean? I thought they might be 'system' fonts, but they don't appear to be.

Also, under previous versions of Windows, one could distinguish between 'system' fonts and True Type fonts. Some True Type fonts that were also basic fonts used in Windows, like Arial, could be deleted but they would then be restored because Windows needed them. With the arrangement under XP, I can't tell which are system fonts and which aren't.

As usual, about every program I've installed has kindly installed some fonts whether I want them or not, so I would like to start pruning out those I am unlikely to use rely on my font-handling program, but I need some help determining what to leave as permanently installed files; the new symbols on the icons have me confused.

Answer:Fonts in XP: what do the symbols mean?

System fonts are now hidden in XP by default, so you would have to tick the show hidden files setting to see them. They all have the file extension .fon and the old A symbol on the icon.

The files you can see with the O symbol on the icon are OpenType fonts, which is an extension of TrueType. They are specifically for use with MS's new ClearType technology to improve readability on LCD and TFT screens. The TT symbols are normal TrueType fonts.

On a newly installed PC with XP I can't see any fonts in this font folder with arrows on them so they are not part of a default install of XP. Must be from the apps you have installed.

i recently received an e mail & next to the title in the inbox list was a little red exclamation mark. What does this mean? i seem to remember some other symbol next to a message a while back. is this some kind of secret code?

Answer:symbols at e mails?

Hi missmouse

The exclamation mark is for the level of Priority.
Red exclamation mark = High Priority.
Blue downwards pointing arrow = Low Priority.

When you compose a message you can change the Priority level from Normal to High or Low Priority.
