Backup program for a particular application

Question: Backup program for a particular application

Hello can anyone please tell is there any back up software that can back up a particular application for me? For example, if there is any update for a software and i want to back up the software before updating it, is there any way to do so? I know i can back up the whole computer using Norton Ghost but what if i just want to back up a particular software?

Preferred Solution: Backup program for a particular application

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Backup program for a particular application

Not generally doable. When programs are installed, they make changes in the registry of the computer and in various parts of the Windows operating system. Simply finding a program that will copy over the files, will not copy the registry changes or any other changes..it simply copies files. That is why people who try this run into problems. To date I know of no program that copies applications into a useful format to save. There are migration programs and imaging software etc, but nothing for single applications to my knowledge.

Answer:Application popup: SRVMGR.EXE - System Error : The program can't start because NETUI0.dll is missing from your computer. Try reinstalling the program to fix this problem.

Hi,
To run Server Manager on Windows 7 you need to download and install the Remote Server Management toolkit from MS.

I keep getting an error when I try to use the Backup Program. As far as I can tell there are no hidden partitions. Using the Administrator tools -> Computer Management -> Disk Management tool, I deleted all the partitions on my external ESATA drive which is larger than my boot drive. Then I recreated two partitions, one a 30G partition and the other uses the rest of the 320G drive. After formatting them, I tried to do a backup and received the same error. I have done this twice now. Anyone know why this is happening and how to fix this?

I used the external drive dock in USB mode and got the same errors. I tried two different external enclosures and still the same errors.

Answer:Unable to backup hard drive with Backup Program

That error seems to be referring to your system partition, not your backup destination. Make sure you're logged in as an admin.

Now run an elevated (admiinstrative) command prompt
Start > Cmd > Right Click Cmd.exe > Run as Admin
Type in: sfc / scannow

If you get errors, run that three times.

If that doesn't help you could try a System Repair or Repair Install.

I am new to this forum. Does anyone know how to modify a bootable backup program to load RAID drivers and which drivers would work with the program.
I am considering Acronis, Ghost, and Bootitng. They all make bootable CDs or floppies but I dont think any of them will recognize my RAID array.
I have an ABIt VT7 with a motherboard VIA RAID controller. I don't need to see the contents of the RAID partitions just the presence of the drive and the partitions to select for backup. I know this is possible since when I boot, the BIOS shows the raid drives present, but when Acronis boots it does not see them. Any suggestions is appreciated - but please no lectures on failure rates.

Thanks - Lee Gordon

Answer:RAID 0 Backup from boot backup program

Mee Too

Me too,

I purchased Acronis based solely on the consensus of another chat that it would see the disk(s) image and not the independent drives. It doesn't. Even though the bios sees the raid array. Windows sees it only under the device manager but not under file explorer.

Similar for part magic (ver 7 ?), and ghost. Maybe there's a later version of these programs which works. I am trying to move an image to the raid but the problem is the same regardless, namely hardware raid on the 680i is not complete and additional software is required to see the image and not the individual drives.

I too am very interested in this problem.

Do I use clone or backup on my hardware backup program?

Answer:Clone or backup on my hardware backup program

I would do a clone each month, a weekly file backups. How often you do the file backup depends on how much data you create and update each day.

PS there is no 'hardware' backup program. I assume you mean some backup program included that was included with system purchase.

Does anyone know of a method for backing up software applications that are not stand alone applications. Say I need to reformat a computer but there is special software installed on it. In this case copying the folder in "C:\program files" and pasting into the new freshly installed would otherwise cause the application to stop working.

I'm not looking for a total disk back up imaging software, just a method for migrating software.

Thanks if you have any input.

Answer:Backup an Application

If you are backing up software that DOES NOT write info to your Registry then just about any backup software should be OK. If it does write to the Registry then it is not much use backing up the program alone. As long as you have the installation download/CD/DVD, you could probably back up the data part of the program. Then re-install the program and reload the data.

The best way, of course, is to do a FULL backup of the drive, but you already know that. Sorry I cannot be more helpful. Other MG'ers will probably provide better info/advice. Bazza

I use Microsoft's WIN XP backup program only to back up specific files onto a RW CD. With the Microsoft WIN 98 & ME backup program, I could save the backup job, thus allowing me to backup those specific files at random without having to reselect them. If I added files to my computer, I could simply add those files to the backup job and save it. I have not yet been able to figure out how to save a backup job in XP's backup program. Each time I run a backup on XP, I must select the specific files for backup, a process which I find tedious and wasteful. Has anyone figured out how to save a backup job in XP's backup program?

Also, a note of disappointment to Microsoft: The XP backup program does not recognize the qic file created by Microsoft's previous backup versions. When I upgraded from ME to XP, I had to restore my backup files on a WIN 98 computer, copy the files to a RW CD, and then copy them to my XP computer. It seems that Microsoft should have made provisions for the XP backup program to have the ability to restore backup files from their previous backup programs.

After Windows gave my laptop a minor case of the flu yesterday, I've decided that I really need to partition my hd and seperate the OS from the stuff I really care about. But then there's the problem that I don't know how to do that.

Do I need to format the hd before I insert the recovery disk or will it prompt me for that option? As I understand it I can't partition an hd containing files already...?

If I want to partition the hd into 3, how much space would just Windows XP require? I haven't decided if 3 really is necessary though. Any thoughts on the matter? (Have 80 GB)

I have several programs where I lack the installation disks. Using an external hd, can I just copy the folders and move them back once I've partitioned the hd? For some of these programs, like Nero, I needed to enter a registration key. How do I retrieve that and enter it into regkey afterwards? Obtionally, is there a good program out there to make backup of applications that would also retrieve the reg key?

Any help on these matters would be highly appreciated. Thanks!

Answer:Backup of entire application folders

It seems, that you need partition manager software. I prefer Acronis Disk Director.
It will take you 10 minutes to complete all operatitions.
So, first you need srink your partition, as you have only one partition 80GB. How much free space do you have?
Shrink all free space. On unpartitioned area create 2 partitions.
For example: if you have 30 GB with OS and apps (after shrinking), create another partition 50 GB. Then press "commit".
Now you can continue: copy first partition on second (note: both partitions are primary), press "commit". After that, you can delete old unneeded windows files from second partition, and apps data from first. Again use Disk Director: shrink first partition (from 30 GB till 10-15 GB, as you wish), resize second from 50 till 60-65> "commit"> and again shrink second from 65-till 30. At last on unpartitioned area create new logical partition (40 GB) for storage private data.
So, you'll have 3 partitions: 1-OS;2-apps;3-private data,
none of data will be lose, all programs will be copied correctly, and you wont need any key, it's very reliable program.
As you wish, in future you could reinstall only OS partition, and the other 2 will be saved!
Really recommend!

Hi,

This time I would like to tell you about, maybe not well known, but excellent software which can provide you easy and reliable your E-mails backup strategy.
I'm talking about MailStore Home - it's free, but in the past it was a paid software.

Answer:Do a backup of your E-mails! - great application!

Hi there
For outlook why not just use pfbkup.exe or even the archive function.

For Outlook express just change the data area where the folders are stored and just save these with Windows express.

For other email clients this might be OK but I'm now trying to "minimize" the number of 3rd party apps I have on machines. Maintenance and serial numbers etc etc gets ever more complex so I'm "Going back to the roots".

A 3rd party app for me now has to do ALL of the following

1) Is it SIGNIFICANTLY better than what is available in the standard system.

2) Is it cost effective.

3) Is the manufacturer / developer still going to be around a few years later or are you going to get stuck with some obsolete app a few years down the road.

Paid apps that I use that MS has no better or equal equivalent for (to ??) are things like Photoshop CS4, Acronis True Image (MS backup is getting better but still doesn't have anything like the functionality yet), some audio editing software, DVD authoring, Winamp,MS Office. (Open Office does a passable job but still doesn't compare with "the real thing" especially as MS office - even the Enterprise version can be sourced HEAVILY discounted -- either as a student, via MS Use at Home programs --get your employer to sign up) or technet /msdn.

Free 3rd party apps - MySQL, WAMP server, ?Torrent

Jury's still out - Firefox vs IE8.

(Corporate apps like SAP with its front end GUI, Oracle, Eclipse IDE etc don't co... Read more

I am getting a error that says "Windows Backup application could not start due to an internal error: Server execution failed (0x800800005)". I found a couple articles saying my account didnt have the rights to do a backup. I dont know how this could be since I have a weekly scheduled backup and havent had a problem and I havent changed my rights. Plus Im logged on as a administrator. So the solution I found said this

"Your Windows user account doesn't have the privileges it needs to run the task, Thomas. Go to Start, right-click Computer, then choose Manage, Local Users and Groups, Groups. Right-click Administrators and click 'Add to group', Add, Advanced, Find Now. Double-click Local Service and press Ok"
Fix Backup & Restore when it won't start

However Local users and Groups does not appear in my computer management. Im using Home Premium which is why I believe. Anyhow I dont plan to continue solely using windows backup either. Does anyone know how I can remedy this? Whether I actually do not have the appropriate rights? or What else could be my problem? Thanks alot.

Answer:Windows Backup application could not start

The error code that you are getting is a classic COM "Class Not Registered" error.

This indicates to me that you have had a fairly major corruption of your machine. That could also explain why your "Local users and groups" does not show up either.

Bad news is that I can't really offer you any advice on how to fix that. Hopefully someone else here can build on what I've said & help you out some more!

Dear sir
The backup application could not start due to an internal error:

The service cannot be started, either because it is disabled or because it has no enabled devices associated with it. (0x80070422).

I've tried starting up the windows Backup service in "Manual" startup type, making sure that Remote Procedure Call is on "automatic" and started, and BITS is on "Manual" and started. Still get the same error message.
Tried restarting. Same error message. Any advice?

Hello, I'm using a combination of the Vista backup to do a complete backup of my OS and applications (for emergency restore) and another backup tool to handle my data.

My OS is on C: and my data on D: (and other drives).

My query is that C: will contain application settings/data - for example if I write actions in Photoshop they will be stored under the user application data subdirectory or if I create a DOT template for Word it will be stored under the hidden data directories for Word.

I want to be sure that I am backing up all of the vital application data/settings so that I can either restore just those or in an emergency can restore my full Vista backup (done weekly) and then restore the application data (which I want to backup daily).

I've searched this set of forums and elsewhere to find something that lists which subdirectory tree(s) I need to ensure that I have backed up (and I guess I'll need to do a registry backup too each day just in case settings are stored there). I can't find such a list.

Does anyone know of a document that details what the vital stuff to backup is?

Thanks.

Answer:Application data/settings backup

If you need to backup Photoshop, you need to find it's directory (probably under Adobe), and for Word it's probably under Microsoft or Office. Another option is to simply backup the entire AppData folder, that way you can't miss anything.

If you're talking about a large-scale backup for your whole system, you will probably want to backup drivers as well (you only need to back these up once, all the drivers are installed in C:\swsetup, but I prefer just saving the installer files).

I reinstalled my OS multiple times, with my personal data on another drive. What I backed up from my C drive was:

Select folders from AppData (only for programs' settings that I wanted to backup)Fonts that I had collected over time (C:\Windows\Fonts)Themes that I had collected over time (C:\Windows\Resources\Themes)Custom Power Plans (exported/imported through powercfg.exe in command prompt)Start Menu folder, for lots of links I created (AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu - Private Profile, C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu - Public Profile)Certain folders in Program Files of older programs that I run as Administrator for compatibility purposes (programs that need Administrator privileges to save stuff in Program Files)I did not backup the registry in anyway, because the registry changes I made were saved as .reg files. Other registry changes are made while installing programs (which after a clean install will be done anyway)
What you think is vital to backup depends on your s... Read more

I don't know the difference between an Application and a Program. Thought the Geektionary would help, but didn't find anything there.

I have 2 Dell Windows XP computers.

If I want to copy something such as Microsoft Money from one pc and install it on the other, what exactly do I need to copy? The application or the program?

And where do I find what I need to copy? :confused

Any help in this area is so appreciated.

Thanks.

Answer:Application vs. Program

Well basically an Application is an executable file such as Notepad.exe whereas a program can contain more than one application along with numerous other files such as DLL files.

Since the days when Windows had a registry it is far more difficult just to copy a program as it often has numerous entries in the registry which will point to locations of files within the program - this is why prgrams these days are generally installed. Only if the program contains a small number of files or is a self contained executable (such as Notepad which is both a program and an application rolleyes) can a program be copied.

Hope that's all clear. :confusedrolleyes

The tool has following features:
1:customization,it provider the at least 3 options
a: backup system only,
b: backup application only,
c: both.
for example, i think reinstalling applications is much more longer and more difficult then reinstalling windows system, in order to get the smallest size of backup data,i prefer option b:i would reinstall windows system in half an hour,so i like a tool to backup the application only,if my windows system is panic,i reinstall the system, then restore the application with the backup data

Backup software, it made me loose all backups, twice. First one "only" corrupted all files.

But the worst was the one from Google. I removed online files and upon sync, it removed local files. I had to redo everything.

I have sworn never to use any automatic backup software ever again, manual backups for me, only copy/paste locally or online.

i thought that might just be a problem with the shortcut which suddenly displayed a generic icon but even the .exe file in the folder had the same issue.

this has happened every time i install this program and others as well which i have tested.

help would be greatly appreciated. thank you!

I'm trying to execute an application (simulator) using a system call from my program. Once the application (simulator) starts, I want my program to perform certain tasks on the GUI of the simulator: fill in certain fields, start the simulation, collect the results, and close the application. In essence, I need to emulate the keyboard stokes on the GUI of the simulator using my C program. I must interface to the GUI since I only have the executable available to me. Can any one recommend a way to perform this? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Answer:How to interface an application's GUI with a C program

Ive never done it, but I'd recommend looking into sockets, you can send data between a host program and server program and such.

Anyone using this HOT rated download, and will it have a direct or indirect benefit regarding popup or popunder ads? The screen shot looks pretty impressive. I'm already employing CCleaner for the drive.

Answer:CleanCache application/program

This is more of a question for the Software Forum.

Using this or CCleaner is not necesarily going to stop popups? It is not a popup stopper? It's a drive cleaner which will remove some items that could possibly be related to some problems you are having.

Here's a strange problem.

I have AAA Map 'n' Go 7.0, running with WinMe.

When I exit the program, instead of getting the message that I used to get (I believe it was, "Save Changes to startup.mn7?"), I get the following message: "_______ startup.mn7?"

How do I reset the "_______" to "Save Changes to..."?

I have already uninstalled and re-installed the program, and that didn't solve the problem.

I'm troubleshooting a Windows XP (SP2) eMachine (with a fresh OS install on a new hard drive - no original eMachine software remains on the system) and I've never encountered such a persistent problem: certain applications (Fruit Loops, Adobe Acrobat Reader, among others) run fine after installation, but after a reboot they will not run. Their shortcuts, as well as the actual program executables, lose their original icons and are mysteriously changed to the generic window icon (the one Windows will use for a file type is doesn't recognize.) When I try to run these programs, using the desktop shortcut OR the actual executable, I get the error dialog box: "This program is not a valid Win32 application." This happens to several applications, while others (Pro Tools, Acid) remain unaffected and can be executed w/o any problem.
*Note: this computer is not connected to the Internet, so it is unlikely that this is some type of virus.

What could be causing this? Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

I have a flash application running within a secure site. The program uses resources such as video clips and powerpoint presentations. Video clips work OK, but when I ask it to open a .ppt, a popup window appears briefly and then disappears again.
Popup blocker is disabled, and I don't have google or yahoo toolbars.
It's running in a trusted site with all the settings set to minimum security.
there is nothing wrong with the ppt - it runs perfectly on my pc, and from within my secure site.
And (perhaps crucially) it all works perfectly in Firefox!

This all leads me to conclude that there is a setting in IE7 that is wrong, but I can't for the life of me figure out what.

Can anybody help?
The ppt is one of the Resources within the SCORM-compliant "OCR PE AS level Teaching Support" from Heinemann. This is running as a course within the Fronter VLE. (Just on the off-chance that there is someone with specific knowledge of this!)

Thanks in advance.

I am relatively "new" to programming. I always have wondering how to develop a Windows client application and made it a stand alone program that install at the client computer with the "double click" (autoexec?) feature by following Windows standard installation instructions at screen. Can somebody please tell me how is that done and list some basic book references that shows me how to do that?

If I create an application with Access 2000, can I convert it to a standalone application that install and behave as explained above?

Thank you very much. It will sincerelly be appreciated.

Hello all. I have myself a rather vexing issue going on with my operating system (XP x64 Edition SP2) that has me baffled, especially since it has survived an almost foolproof barrage of fixes.

Basically, I noticed very recently that one of my programs that requires an internet connection (P2P Program) is unable to connect to the internet, despite having worked fine for almost 2 years now. I blew it off at first, and when I went back again to try it I had the same problem. I ended up downloading another, similar program, and had that problem again. I noticed after this, that some of my games (and other applications) that require an internet connection to update and the like, also are now unable to connect to the internet to perform their functions. Even one of my malware scanners, which requires that it is up to date before being able to run, could not update itself (I manually updated it).

Not sure if this is relevant, but my clock was reset by itself to July 1st 2005, and after I manually reset it, it didn't change itself back (yet).

So in a nutshell, I did some research and found one other guy with a similar problem to my own, which he identified as a worm in his WINDOWS registry. He didn't specify how he removed it.

I've since run my anti-virus software (BitDefender), CCleaner, Ad-aware, Malwarebytes, Spybot S&D, HijackThis, and SUPERAntiSpyware and I've had no luck. Malwarebytes discovered some potentially false positives ignored by Ad-aware and m... Read more

Hello Everyone,

I've finally had enough. I am sick and tired of using windows control panel to uninstall programs. Why? Because 1/2 the time I use the add/remove programs thing it doesnt uninstall the program completly. It will leave folders, files, registry entries, hidden crap, and who knows what else still on my computer from the program I wanted to uninstall. Then I have to go back and try to delete them manually, then pray that a registry cleaner will find the rest (which usually doesnt happen).

I'm looking for something that will completely remove EVERYTHING when I uninstall a program. I dont care if it costs money or if its free, as long as it works.

Thank you if you can help.

EDIT: on a side note. Also looking for an easy to use free macro program. Somthing that I can use to press a key stoke, have a few minute delay, and repeat the key stroke. Then loop that untill I press stop.

Is it possible in Windows 7 (either via a windows feature or an add-on program) to password protect individual programs or software so that when you try to run the software you first need to provide a password? Please note this is not the same as UAC in Windows 7. I want to be able to lock down certain programs so that when a user tries to run the program (say Internet Explorer or Microsoft Access) they will be prompted for a password. This would be very handy in a shared user scenario. Is this possible via the group policy editor? Thanks!

Answer:Password protect an application or program

This is not supported by Windows but third party applications may provide this feature. Windows security doesn't work that way.Windows security is based on the users account and the groups it is a member of. This is in the files and folder security properties. Don't change anything here unless you know what you are doing.Note that if the user is using an admin account he can evade any and all restrictions you might impose.

My family computer is a desktop PC running Windows Vista with McAfee. I make sure to run all updates ASAP. My updates are current through yesterday. When I tried to update my computer this morning, the updates failed with an unknown error. "Error(s) found: code 80070103 Windows Update encountered an unknown error"

This morning, I turned on the computer to find that McAfee has been disabled, Windows Defender has been disabled, and that I cannot turn them back on. Additionally, I cannot run any programs. Invariably, I get the response "program.exe is not a valid Win32 application" regardless of whether I run the program from the C drive or a USB.

Neither Internet Explorer nor Firefox are working; I can only access the internet by opening windows explorer and typing an address into the address bar in that window.

I have tried running McAfee in safe mode, but get the same message. There is nothing attached (except for the keyboard and mouse). I have tried restoring my computer to a previous restore point only to be told by the computer that there are no restore points.

Hey guys, I realize that I am not the only person that has encountered this problem, as my research has shown. I tried to ready some similar posts and problems on this forum and others, but I seem to get stuck at certain steps. Here is my situation. Im on a Dell latitude d630 running windows vista. I fell asleep watching Dexter online and when I woke up there was a new looking Anti-Virus program on my task bar that i do not remember installing. The program showed hundreds of infections and was prompting me to delete only if i bought their antivirus. After realizing I could not delete these infections i tried to close the program and open my Malwarebytes Anti Malware and also Synamatec Antivirus. Both programs failed to open, and an error message bubbled off of the "Antivirus" icon. As soon as this happened I tried harder to download new antivirus and to get this off my comp. But no matter what I download, I am unable to install/open. I cannot open task manager, and recently new virus alerts have been popping up. One says i have an infiltration alert about trojans and password stealing attacks, and when I press stay unprotected www.*censored*.com pops up. I tried to fix this going off what you said to others, but I would appreciate a little one on one help to walk me through this, as each case may be different entirely. Thanks a lot!

programs/files with that program from a laptop with XP Professional to

Please Advise.

Answer:Can anyone recommend a Application & file transfer program?

Transfering your files back depends on the method of how you have backed them up.
If you have done it using Bounce Back Express, maybe this application has option for restoring the files?

Also if you want to transfer application files from XP to Win 7 this will not work.
You will need to reinstall all applications on Windows 7 and then transfer your other files such as video, music, pictures etc.

Hi all,

I'm having a rather strange issue that I haven't been able to trace, mostly because although the error itself makes sense to me, I have no idea what it means.

I'm using Windows XP pro, 32 bit with service pack 3 on an HP 8510W notebook. Recently I noticed that every time I closed a program, or a program exited properly, I received an error that looked something like this.

notepad.exe - Application Error

Click on OK to terminate the program

iexplore.exe - Application Error
The instruction at "0x03051f3e" referenced memory at "0x00000004". The memory could not be "read".
Click on OK to terminate the program

taskmgr.exe - Application Error
The instruction at "0x009c1f3e" referenced memory at "0x00000004". The memory could not be "read".
Click on OK to terminate the program
And so on, with everything from Reaper to firefox to Task Manager. I've also noticed two other things, which are:
A. this error never occurs if I manually end the task from within task manager or tskill, only when the program legitimately exits.
B. The first hex value always changes, but the second value, the memory being referenced, always stays the same.

Anyone know of a program that will capture every keystroke you do and send it to a specific application you want?
Lets say I am typing in an application and then the program captures my keystrokes and sends it to another application? Please does anyone know of anything that does this? And link please?

Answer:Program that captures keystrokes and sends to another application?

I'm not sure this site's Terms of Service allow help to be provided for such programs. There's no way to know why you want such information, and some uses could be illegal.

Hello, this is my first time using this forum so I apologize if I do something wrong.

So normally, whenever I hover my mouse over a program located on the taskbar, I get a preview screen showing what is currently being viewed on that program. I can still get that, however, it never shows itself above the active program (last program I've clicked).

This happens with each and every program I have opened and tried. I tested the method of having the active program sitting in a place where it would only slightly conceal the preview (not maximized). Then having inactive programs (I've clicked on something else besides them last) behind the active one and the preview. Then I can see that that the preview will cover all inactive programs but the active program will still cover the preview.

I hope I've detailed what's happening well enough. I don't remember when this first started happening but I do know that it is not supposed to function like this. The preview should always be visible and on top no matter if there are active programs or not.

I also tried to get a picture of it happening, but it's kinda hard to take a picture of something that requires the active program to not hide itself (like snipping tool does).

Hi all,

My vista box is getting a little slow from time. Like everything freezes on the computer, and then I have to wait a little bit and it comes back. Often this happens when firefox has been used for a while. I'm not sure if this is firefox's entire fault, so I was wondering what free program is out there that I can use to monitor what application is accessing the disk. I tried googling but just found a bunch of hard drive monitoring (temperature, fail rate, etc.) programs.

Thanks,

Z

Answer:application hard drive usage program

You should be able to use the resource monitor built into Windows to see what programs are writing to disk.

Third party utilities are available as well, such as ProcessMonitor and FileMonitor.

I have a split Access 2013 "application program?. This application program has a Front-end part that exists on each terminal within the network. The back-end part (the data) lives on the File server with Windows Server 2012. The front-end and back-ends are connected to each other with cat6 cable. This works great. What I now want to do is be able to walk outside to the end of my property with a portable computer and still be able to use this front end application program but without a wire. Assuming I have a wireless connection to the file server with good signal strength how do I link up the portables front end to the back end?

I want to backup just Malwarebytes and Sybot programs and Kaspersky and the type.

I do have Acronis and backed up computer, but in the meantime I have updated so many programs,
how can I backup single programs with the updates, since after re-install (yes, I do screw up computer sometimes) I have to update them and on dial-up it takes forever.

Is there a way to backup with all settings and updates a program to external drive without having multiple total backups?
I know copying wouldn't do it, who knows where all the settings are placed.

I'd appreciate any ideas.

Question: XP Backup Program

I had it installed b4 I re-format, but I can't remember how I did it. I suffer from sometimers, sometimes I remember, sometimes I forget....what was I talking about? Thanks 4 any help! nogo & his dachshund, "Gus"

Answer:XP Backup Program

Windows XP includes its own backup program, although you may need to do some digging to find it.
If you use Windows XP Home Edition, you'll need to follow these steps to install the utility:

1.

Insert your Windows XP CD into the drive and, if necessary, double-click the CD icon in My Computer.

2.

On the Welcome to Microsoft Windows XP screen, click Perform Additional Tasks.

3.

Click Browse this CD.

4.

In Windows Explorer, double-click the ValueAdd folder, then Msft, and then Ntbackup.

5.

Double-click Ntbackup.msi to install the Backup utility.

I have all my CD's ripped in to Windows Media Lossless files. This way I can use dbPowerAmp to whip up a batch of MP3's in whatever format I need very quickly without ever having to re-rip a CD.

Since we are talking about hundreds of CD's here, I want to back up the WMA Lossless Rips to DVD so I never have to worry about doing it again in the case of a server crash, etc...

I have several backup programs, and typically use a Windows Home Server for my main backups, but I need one that fills a specific need.

I need it to burn the WMA Lossless Folder to DVD's for safe keeping. I need a simple backup program that will do this, and:
Keep each artist folder together on one DVD
Automatically figure out what will fit and copy based on that to minimize DVD usage
Ask for the next DVD when needed (of course)
A generated report would be nice but not necessary
The ability to automatically use more than one DVD burner would be nice

Anyone know of such an animal? I want the files and structure stored in standard windows format. I don't want to have to find the backup program to restore the files, I just want to be able to drag them back to the server/computer if needed.

Thanks

Answer:Need backup program that...

I'd just copy everything to a couple hard drives. And keep a 3rd copy on your server. Unplug and store the drives in these: http://www.wiebetech.com/slideshow.php?dir=/DriveBox_TM/&sel=2.

Burning things to dozens of discs isn't fun... and having to re-burn dozens of DVDs in a few years isn't fun either.

It's easier to copy a drive all at once to another hard drive as drives get cheaper and bigger.

Data needs to be in 2 or more places. Keep it on a couple hard drives and your server and you should be covered.

I am adding a 320 GB drive to my pc which currently has a single 80 GB drive. I want to transfer all of the data I have including the operating system and programs to the new drive. Then I want to replace the 80 GB drive with another large HDD. So I guess I am looking to make a mirror image of the 80 onto the 320 and then make the pc fully functional without the 80 altogether. Then I can add the second large HDD. I have found a few suggestions but I just want to make sure that I can transfer the OS and then completely remove the 80 GB drive.
Thanks for your help. I am fairly green so please include what may be obvious to others. Thanks!!!

Question: Backup Program?

Hi folks,

My uncle asked me to find a way to backup one of his folders whenever he plugs his USB. So I need a program to backup the specific folder (which is the "Documents" folder) whenever a specific destination device plugged in. A free program would be highly appreciated.

Thank you!

Answer:Backup Program?

Hi Deadly Do you know which USB your uncle have? Many USB flash drives comes with their own software that allows you to do a such thing, which makes it way easier than relying on a third-party program for that. If the program isn't present on the USB, we could always check on the manufacturer website to see if they offer one in free download so you can use it.

I have some backups that have file types called "saveitkeep.", but I don't know which of several backup programs I've used over the last few years that made them! They are on several different external hdd's used only for backups. I can view them in WordPad, but the formatting is difficult to read through, sometimes.

Does anyone know what program would make these files with this type label?

I've had some bad experiences with backup programs.
Can you believe last one I tried for some reason didn't backup .log files?
So I'd really like to get a good opinion on a windows backup program.

Anyways, internet propaganda is hard to sort through. What by reputable sources would be considered the best backup program out there.

I want something that can detect when an external device is plugged in. That was say I can have certain files that need to be updated on my usb key each time I plug it in backed up.

Windows Home Server / Full bare metal backup and restore / can drill down into the backup and restore single files if needed or the complete image from scratch on a new drive freshly formatted or any level between.

As to external device updating certain/single files if needed. You can setup a U3 Traveler from Memorex to do that.

Question: Backup program

I am looking for expert advice for a reasonably priced backup program that will allow me to schedule a backup of selected files but will only backup if the file size or date has changed. An example is "I use Quicken for my personal use. I don't enter data every day but I would like to leave a backup cd in my burner so if I do enter anything then at the scheduled time the program will check the data files for changes. If any changes then and only then would it peform a backup. I have looked at several programs but none will allow me to do exactly what I want. It is inconvient for me to download a bunch of trial programs as living on the edge of the earth I have extremely slow dialup...typically about 19kbps... Thanks in advance
