slow rs232 data communication on Windows7

Question: slow rs232 data communication on Windows7

My communication device communicates perfectly via RS232 and works fine on Windows XP. But when I upgraded to Windows 7 the data communication is too slow.

Preferred Solution: slow rs232 data communication on Windows7

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Question: RS232 data

Anyone know what software is best to use to enable me to view the data coming into my RS232 port from external scientific equipment?...ie an anemometer!....I need to view the raw data to check why I do not get the correct readings from the equipment and been told I should do a port scan...bit too techy for me!

I have a set of scales that outputs data on rs232. I need to read the data (weight in grams)multiply by a price per gram and output to a rs232 LCD display. Is there an easy way to do this. the scales constantly output and the price per gram has to be adjustable

Answer:RS232 data converter and output

Easy is a relative term. Most scales like that are used in some company or way that demands some software in order to be sold. Look at the makers web site for how they expect you to use the product. We still have many running a DOS app.1/3 of highway deaths are caused by drunks. The rest are by people who can't drive any better than a drunk.

Hi;

We have a slitter scorer machine in which tools are placed via servo motors. Servo motor is controlled with servo drive and each servo drive is sent the values of a set of parameters to set a job. The main control system is DOS based which sends the values of parameters to all drives according to job. The data flowing is as MS DOS_RS232 port >>> RS232 to 485 converter >>> parallel connection to all servo Com ports. I want to monitor the data following from MS DOS to drives for which I have arranged another RS232 to 485 converter and connected a wire from TX+ terminal of 1st Comm module to the TX- terminal of 2nd Comm module. If I enable the hyper terminal, I see the data following but un-understandable format.

The format of data following from MSDOS PC to drives is like "7E-BF-02-04-3C-00" in ASCII format. So to read it I downloaded MS “PortMon” software which is used to monitor data following via RS232 port. I have windows XP and when I run the software, “Not Connected” is shown on the top bar. Please help how to make it “Connect” to capture the data. Or if anyone has any other idea to capture the data following, please assist.

Answer:How to capture the data following via RS232 in ASCII format.

If someone guide me about PortMon that how to make it "Connected" it would be enough for me. This time when i run PortMon, "Not Connected" displays at the top write corner.

HI,

I have a problem regarding rs232-usb converter... I'm using Toshiba Satellite series laptop.
The problem I faced is I can receive data from my microcontroller to VB but I can?t send data to microcontroller...

However, when I use the same VB code and same converter, I try at my friend laptop (other brand), it works...
May I know is there any other setting I need to set for my laptop??

Thanks.

Answer:Satellite A200 and RS232-USB converter - can’t send data to microcontroller

Hello

Do you have some problem with notebook functionality?
Are all ports working well?

Have you installed driver given on driver disk? If I understood it right you need this driver for virtual COM port creation.

Bu the way: which notebook model do you have?

Hi there !

I am looking for a little help on a project, and of course, Tech Support Guy is the right place to be.

My project is composed of 2 files.

-Individual contact details
-Summary of all my contact details

So basically I have a individual contact files for all my customers, suppliers etc. These files are templates dedicated to a particular assessment that will be performed every year.

I would like to centralise the information from the individual contacts to the summary.

The contact number seemed to be a problem in this case. Could anyone provide me with a solution ?

Thanks a lot

Hi Guys

I have problem with OKI Data C 5100 printer. When i switch it on it shows communication error. Before this it was showing 030 Error that meant that CU Slot1 DIMM RAM Error. This error vanished on it own and now it gives communication error. I don't know what i must do.
There is no help available anywhere for this.
So any help will be much appreciated.

Thanks

Answer:OKI Data C5100 Printer communication Error

I don't know what OS you are using. But here is basic steps you should to do first: try to reinstall/update the printer driver. Try different Serial/USB cable. Try different USB Port. And make sure your printer connected the PC directly. If you have a RAM problem in your printer, you can always order new one from OKI website.

The power is on, but the printer does not go online. Possible CauseRemedy Bad connectionSwitch off the printer and disconnect the power cable. Reconnect the power cable and switch the printer on. If this does not clear the fault, call for service.

I have a W2K machine here that is driving me nuts with an intermittent problem. I'll give some examples:

Double click on a file or application in Windows Explorer will often hang for about 10~15 seconds before invoking the process.

In Wordpad, selecting 'find' in the menu will often delay 10~15 seconds before bringing up the find window.
Here is what I've got:
Windows 2000 w/ SP4
MSIE 6 w/ SP1
dual 750mhz intel
512MB memory (usually ~300MB in use)
Promise SuperTrak IDE RAID w/ 16MB cache
Norton AV 2003 (up to date)

The examples above are somewhat representative. I have seen the same sort of thing in a variety of applications but I tried to keep my examples basic. The event log is clean with no errors noted.

If I invoke an application from the start menu, I usually have no problem unless the program calls something else.

At first I suspected Data Access Components, so I upgraded to MDAC v2.8 and component checker says all is well. I did a close look at what is running with TaskInfo and found a conflict between Creative's Disk Detector and Windows (fixed). I've run several spyware checkers and all is clean.

At this point I'm sort of suspecting either Norton AV or some driver or maybe even dual processors, but who knows.

Any thoughts?

So my laptop's motherboard fried, and so I ended up creating a new desktop. I also got a usb enclosure for the old HDD, and managed to get most of the data off- with the exception of anything in my personal user folder- which includes documents, desktop files, and the download folder. Unfortunately, that is pretty much most of what I need/want. I have the old Username/password for my old windows account but I have no idea how to retrieve it, as it keeps denying me access. Any advice on how I should proceed?

Answer:Recovering personal data off an old windows7 HDD

Hi

You need to right click on the User/[user name] folder and select 'take ownership'. This should allow you access if you are logged on as an administrator.

My computer performs bad in my local WIFI. I expect 40 - 50 Mb/s but usually get 10 - 17 Mb/s. (I run win 7-64 bit on this computer) There is no other traffic. Intresting is that i have another computer a Compac CQ, running Linux (Ubuntu) 64 bit. There I get 45 - 50+ Mb/s. they are placed on the same spot. I also have a HP Compac dc5800 running win 7 32 bit. I use a D-link external WIFI unit (it is an "old" computer) I get the same WIFI speed as the other Win 7 computer. BUT when Win XP was running, I got 35 -45 Mb/s! All systems are updated. Does someone have an explanation?

Hello letasvar, Welcome to the HP Forums! I understand your one computer is slow on a wireless network. To troubleshoot the issue, please try the steps in this HP document: Troubleshooting Your Wireless Network and Internet Connection (Windows 7) These steps should be enough to resolve the issue. If not, you can try a manual reinstall of the driver: 1. Go into Device Manager, then Network adapters.2. Right-click on the wireless driver, and select "Uninstall".3. Restart the computer. This will force the driver to reinstall itself. Please let me know the results of your troubleshooting. Thanks!Mario

Has anybody figured out how to make an image of a data partition with Win7 imaging without it dragging the whole system partition along?

Answer:Image data partition only - Windows7 imaging

Hi Wolfgang -

You can do this from an elevated Command Prompt using:

WBADMIN START BACKUP -BACKUPTARGET:G: -INCLUDE:E:

I just used this to backup Image of my data partition E to external storage G

To avoid requests for user input during backup, end the command with -QUIET

The hitch is that this reimages to the same offset as original, per usual Win7 Imaging limitations.

You can't install Windows on the same partition as the data without wiping out the data.

But you could do this:

Shrink the partition containing the data if it isn't full.

That would create "unallocated space".

Then make a new partition from that unallocated space.

Then install Windows to the new partition.

Whether it's practical in your case depends on full the drive is. If it's a 500 GB partition, with only 10 GB free, you couldn't shrink it enough to hold Windows.

But if it's a 500 GB partition with only 200 being used, you could shrink by 300, make a 300 GB new partition, and install to it.

But-----fiddling with partitions has some risk to the data. You are best advised to back the data up to some other drive first.

Best tool for the job is probably Partition Wizard.

Hello,

Unfortunately my disk is broken completely and I am not able to boot it anymore. Is there a way to download somewhere the data from the recovery partition?

My Model: Satellite A660-16Z (italian model)
http://www.toshiba.it/discontinued-p...lite-a660-16z/

Operating System: Windows 7

Next I tried to order from the web
https://backupmedia.toshiba.eu/landing.aspx
the recovery image, but after inserting the serial number, the web-system shows me the message:

For your device no recovery medium can be ordered, because it comes either not from the region of Toshiba Europe, or it is too old for this service

thanks in advance
Markus

Answer:Satellite A660 Windows7 home recovery data needed

The notebook belongs definitely to European series so the only plausible reason why you cannot order the recovery disk is: notebook is too old.
In such case you can install only a clean Windows 7 system. The essential drivers are available on the Toshiba EU driver page and could be installed after the system installation.

Hi Im Boya, I've just clean install my notebook with windows 7 home premium oem version. everything goes fine, but when it is trying to load up to the screen asking for password the first time, it took like 15 mins to show the screen. after input the password, it took me another 15 to 20 min to go to desktop. so i tried to call up microsoft and they said nothing is wrong with the cd or the software itself. and ask me if i could run on safe mode. well to turn off it took me 15 to 20 mins again. but at safe mode, everthing is smooth, from starting up to login to shutdown, each task took less then a min or two.So my question, is the oem version is not the right software, as it is suppose to be used in a bundle ( i thought it should be fine, cos it will only lock to one computer ), or is my notebook sux? Here is the spec for my notebook: Asus a6rp series, celeron -m440 memory i've just upgraded it to 2gb HardDrive 60GbI hope you guys can help me with it.I really wanted to experience new windows 7, since I've been using xp. But so far its a disappointment. Thank you.

Answer:Windows7 Very slow on everthing

Things will go slower on your first log on, takes a few for the computer to get its barrings... have you tried restarting sense you've done the safe mode?

... you should run windows update and get any available updates/drivers

Hi, I use LENOVO I-3 LAPTOP (64-BIT, 4GB RAM). The problem is that yesterday i got my laptop abnormally shutdown due to power disconnection. Later when i re-started, the system took me to repair/restore option at boot time. I clicked it but then again abnormally shut it down due to very slow response. Now although the windows7 starts normally but is very slow in performance. it takes about 5 minutes at boot, and also very slow in desktop performance. Can anyone help me to get my system speed up again.

Hey there, I got this new laptop that I now had for a month or more, everything ran well for a while, performance was amazing and incredible, but I believe the laptop caught a virus and I had to re-install windows, so I got a windows 7 ultimate-64 bit version. I updated drivers through the INTEL driver updating thing, and I updated all drivers without problem. But then I noticed slow performance, in fact, terrible. All applications lagged horribly, most of the games that worked before didn't work at all, even the ones that work on my other really old laptop. I tried uninstalling useless stuff but it was not helpful. Any idea why performance would drop out of a sudden? Thanks in advance.

I opened up the dxdiag and saved all information:

My Mom's laptop has recently been running very slow. The laptop would get to the user desktop, but then slow to a hault from there. There were no slowdowns in safemode though.

I've gone though the Vista & Windows 7 Malware Removal/Cleaning Procedure in safe mode, and when I restart in normal mode I'm greeted with a black screen and a cursor for a few minutes (task manager failing twice to start) before I get to the desktop. Any program or task I run (browsing explorer, starting a web browser, changing websites, shutting down) has a very long delay. Throughout this, I'm not sure if the CPU ever rose above 2%, or the memory above 2.38GB.

The computer is a Toshiba Satellite P755, with 6GB RAM and 500GB of free space, running Windows 7 Home Premium SP1. It's also running McAfee Total Protection.

I hope I'm not wasting anyone's time - I can't find any malware, but 10-15 days ago the computer slowed down and behaving strangely in various ways. The most frequent is that the screen goes all white and the computer stops responding, either for a few minutes or long enough that I stop waiting and end up rebooting by force. I've followed your instructions carefully, and I enclose the resulting logs.

Thanks in advance,

Answer:Windows7 slow, behaving abnormally

I want you to run TDSSKiller so refer to the below for how to do so.

TDSSkiller - How to run

Please also download MBRCheck to your desktop

Double click MBRCheck.exe to run (vista and Win 7 right click and select Run as Administrator)
It will show a Black screen with some information that will contain either the below line if no problem is found:
Done! Press ENTER to exit...

Or you will see more information like below if a problem is found:
Found non-standard or infected MBR.
Enter 'Y' and hit ENTER for more options, or 'N' to exit:

Either way, just choose to exit the program at this point since we want to see only the scan results to begin with.
MBRCheck will create a log named similar to MBRCheck_07.16.10_00.32.33.txt which is random based on date and time.

I recently bought Lenovo T520 and wifi internet speed is extremely slow.Tried calling Lenovo tech staff, they told me to upgrade the drivers. The drivers have been updated, system was restarted. Still internet speed is horribly slow.I have tried posting on Microsoft forums as well....no help yet.Can someone please help and advise on how to troubleshoot the issue. - Already disabled the firewall (which to my mind should not be a issue)- Disabled ipv6 for while (no visible effect)

Answer:Internet Speed Slow - T520 - Windows7

I'd begin by assuming your software firewall isn't haven't a significant impact and run with that enabled just to be a bit safer.  Assuming you are in an environment you can control, such as:T520 <-> Your wifi AP/router <-> Cable|Fiber Modem <-> Your ISPYou might begin by hooking your T520 directly up to the modem and running a speed test (http://www.speakeasy.net/speedtest/, http://speedtest.comcast.net/, http://my.verizon.com/micro/speedtest/broadband/) to determine if this is a Modem and/or ISP issue.  Then cable your T520 to one of your AP router downstream ports and perform the speed test again through the router to get a feel for how it's upstream port is behaving.  Hopefully you can through testing (rather than assumption) eliminate some other things and really focus on the wireless.  Notes... You may have to power cycle your modem when you change what is connected to it.  You may be able to acquire ISP signal strength information from the Modem's config page and/or your ISP tech support if that seems necessary.  You might skip this step if another wireless client is found to have excellent throughput via your AP.Before you focus on wifi testing, download a sniffer such as Metageek Inssider (http://www.metageek.net/products/inssider/).   That will allow you to get a feel for your wireless environment, select the best channel(s) to operate on, measure signal strengths, etc.  Once you optimize your bands and ... Last night i installed a new Solid state drive and was pleased, until i shut down the shut down time was horrible. Is this due to something happening with my secondary HDD drive? I did some tweaks to the SSD such as superfetch, paging files, drive indexing, disabled pagefile and prefetch and write catch. I also disabled ClearPageFileAtShutdown and LargeSystemCache. I did not format my old drive as i wanted to just save the OS in case of a crash. Does this have anything to do with my shutdown? is there anything i can do to solve this or should i use registry to change my shutdown times? maybe even just format the second drive? I am stumped and would really appreciate any information that can be given and thanks to all you techies and brilliant individuals ahead of time!

Answer:Installed new SSD clean install of windows7 and now experiencing slow

What make and model SSD?

Why did you do all that tweaking?

I'd have let Windows tweak in whatever way it wants during the install and otherwise leave it alone other than checking alignment after the install.

My laptop suddenly slowed down hugely about 4 weeks ago and seemed to have a virus problem causing a BSOD. Any attempts to solve this were unsuccessful so we have just done a clean install of Windows7 in the hope of solving the speed issue.

However it still takes several seconds to respond to each mouse click at a stage where only Bullguard anti-virus and Windows 7 are installed on the laptop.

I've checked that the latest BIOS is installed v1.90.

I've checked that all device drivers are up to date.
I've checked the hard drive for faults and bad segments.

Please can anyone offer help or advice?

Many thanks.

Hi there,

I am running a Vostro Dell Laptop running Vista and recently I have been having some seperate issues which I'm wondering are due to one major issue. I initially had problems with my Lexmark 1200 printer which stopped communicating with the computer. I solved this once but its immediatly stopped working again. I have now tried to reinstall the original software but no change, this time round I can't get it to work. This has in turn crashed Microsft Word whilst I have been trying to solve the printer. The same day Mozilla Firefox crashed.....I've now got this going again by reinstalling it but I have had to do this several times in the last month. My computer is now running quite slowly and over the las 6 months I have had to reinstall various programmes as they have stopped working for reasons unknown! This is not only becoming frustrating but I'm worried I may have deeper issues. I really just want everything to be working happily again (including my printer which started all this!).....any help gratefully recieved.

Thanks

I am running as an administrator on a Windows 7 machine which I have only had for about 3 months now. Despite it being a company laptop and running McAfee, I installed both Avast and MBAM. Recently, it started taking forever to boot.

Last night I tried running Windows Update from my home network, but I received a 80244019 error. I booted to safe mode and ran MBAM, Avast, as well as a Microsoft Safety Scanner. Nothing found.

This morning, in work, I noticed McAfee had picked up ~20 .tmp files in my Avast directory which I deleted from quarantine. I tried running Windows Update again, and this time it worked - nothing needed to be installed.

So the only thing that had changed was my deleting these temporary files (which I don't think did anything) and being on a company network which may have been the cause (DNS?).

I want to ensure I don't have a virus, however, since the 80244019 error states the *probable* cause is a virus.

I've downloaded and run ComboFix and the log is attached.

Is there anything else I should do here?

Thanks!

Matt

Hello all,

My copy of Windows 7 Home Premium x64 on my laptop has been having some strange issues lately. I cannot run .msi files, and device manager never populates a full list. Sometimes (rarely, but it does repeat) Windows Explorer will freeze, and if I attempt to close it and reopen it using task manager, the UI reloads, but whenever I click on a folder it claims Windows cannot load explorer. Restarting fixes that. I scheduled and ran CHKDSK, and it repaired a few bad sectors, but it didn't fix any of these problems. I have run CCleaner (both the regular cleaner and registry fixer) and defragmented my hard drive until it's only 1% fragmented. I then tried sfc /scannow, and it read a bunch of corrupted files but could not repair them. I read that to fix sfc, you must download and run Windows System Update Readiness Tool. It has been running and "Searching for Updates on this Computer" for about an hour now, and I'm getting concerned that it's just not doing anything. It's not frozen, the bar keeps moving from left to right and I can click on and off of it. I also have the logs from sfc if anyone wants to take a look at them, they'll be attached. The computer isn't very old, and has an intel i3 and 4gb of ram. If you would like any extra information to help, please reply and I'll get back to you as fast as I can Any recommendations on where to go from here would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks so much for any and all help!

Answer:Many corrupted Windows7 files, SFC reads corrupted data but doesnt fix

Hi Qujibo,
First comment you said ran ccleaner REGISTRY cleaner, this is not advised, unless you know what your doing

If there is an UNDO backup from that utility RUN it.

SURT can quite easily run for a couple of hours.

There are a lot of Winsxs errors in your log.

AFTER surt has run

REBOOT

run the MXdiag report from this link
Windows Genuine and Activation Issue Posting Instructions

Was this OS only installed via sysprep a couple of days ago??

i am preparing to repave my pc which is running win7 home premium. it is very painful to lose years of user-data during repaving. i want to backup the user-created-data in windows. what are the possible locations that i need to look into? thanks in advance

PS. i am aware of the fact that backing up malware-created data is harmful. i will exercise extreme caution to go through what i am gonna backup and try to minimize what will be backed-up; also that i wont restore what i have backed-up without scanning thoroughly with security software.

Answer:locations of user data/ user-configurations stored in windows7

Are you saying that your system is infected now?

If so...I suggest that you try to get the malware removed by one of our two malware forums...before backing up or doing anything else.

Hello,
I need your help getting my computer as fast as it was before. The keystrokes are slower and then tries to catch up...similar to malware data logger from outside source I think.

I have adaeare and spybot and AVG-8 loaded and none detect this data logger.
I'm apprenhensive to key in personal info and this stops me from doing important personal tasks..I wont take the chance on hackers getting info.
This is very URGENT that I et this fixed or load WinXP again and lose everything since this transpired.

Welcome to Major Geeks!

It remains to be seen whether you have a malware problem or just a software/hardware issue. Do you have an ATI Graphics Card and is the ATI HotKey Poller service running? If yes, run MSconfig and select the Services tab. Scroll thru the list until you locate the ATI Hotkey Poller service and disable it by unchecking it. Then click Apply and OK. Now reboot your PC and see if there is any change.

If you do not have an ATI card or the above did not help then you will have to work thru the below.

Please follow the instructions in the READ & RUN ME FIRST link given futher down and attach the requested logs when you finish these instructions.

If you have problems where no tools seem to run, please try following the steps given in the below and then continue on no matter what you find. You only need to try the TDSSserv steps if having problems getting scans in the Read & Run Me First.

If something does not run, write down the info to explain to us later but keep on going.
Do not assume that because one step does not work that they all will not.

After completing the READ & RUN ME and attaching your logs, make sure that you tell us what problems still remain ( if any still do )!

Question: USB - RS232

On my old pc i used a belkin ups with their bulldog software. The ups connected to the pc via a serial cable and all worked very well.So I buys a new pc and realise that it doesn't have a serial port. So I get a USB- RS232 cable (serial connector one end to connect to the ups and a USB conector the other end).I installed the drivers from the disk that came wit the usb/serail cable but the ups is not detected. Interestingly if I go into device manager, after installing the driver, and expand the tree so that i can see the driver one minute its there the next the device manager tree closes then opens and the driver disappears then it re-appears!My operating system is win xp home sp2.

Answer:USB - RS232

TomGI've used usb-serial converters, not all with the same degree of success. In most cases however, a reboot seemed to cure most ails, and sometimes only with the usb converter connected before boot up. Not a lot offer, but might be worth a try if you haven't already...

Question: RS232 on TV

RS232 on TV and Freeview Sat box. What is this serial port for?

Answer:RS232 on TV

Dunno about the TV. But my Humax Freeview STB has serial connection which can be used for uploading firmware upgrades from PC (after first downloading from Internet). Although the upgrades are available over the air, they are available sooner off the Internet. For this to work, one requires (for my box) what is known as a Null Modem Cable (and, of course, a serial connection on your PC). Cables avaialble on ebay, maplin etc.If you haven't got a serial connection on your PC, you can get a USB to serial adapter. It should all be described in your manual.Maybe the TV can take firmware upgrades in a similar way.

Question: Rs232

I am planning on building a small form factor PC but it will need RS232. I don't know for sure if there will be room for an add on card for the RS232. Is there a usb to RS232? If so, will it work as good as an add on card?

Answer:Rs232

Usb to RS232 adapters/cables are common (on Ebay) and I assume they work well but I have never used one myself.

During copying files even small size (Say about 500 MB), Windows 10 suddenly drops speed after about 30 seconds to 10 KBPS and then many times to Zero. This transfer process thus becomes extremely slow and along with that the whole laptop becomes extremely slow - Example during transfer to open My Computer takes 3 minutes to open and finally the PC hangs. If no data transfer is happening the laptop works perfect but only after reboot. Once data transfer has started the whole PC slows down and works normally only after reboot.

I have an HP Compaq dx2000mt desktop that has windows7 32bit enterprise installed on it. I tried to install windows7 home 32bit to replace the enterprise OS. As I was installing it stated the old OS would be marked, XXX.old and it went forward, then came to a point where there were booting errors. and it stopped installing. Now I am left with a half install, and a full OS the boot section now in its own drive named disk 0 system reserved.
I partioned the C drive and allocated 20gb and tried to install there. I received the same errors seems that my boot.ini is stuck in the system reserved and I cant figure out how to incorporate disk 0 over to disk C, so that my boot is in the same disk drive.
I have really messed this one up. I have installed an operating system before and never had so much trouble.
Any advice would be helpful.
And please if you have an answer, something for me to do, it needs to be A.B.C.'d out step by step as Im not an expert. But I guess I already proved that...
Thank you in advance.

Hi
i bought a cheap usb to rs232 cable of ebay for £2 with a driver disc.

When i connect usb to port the wizard takes over and asks to install disc but then it will not install .
Have downloaded different drivers but it still wont work, drivers are on desktop i think
thought cable was not working so ordered another but same problem.
Am i doing something wrong?

Answer:usb to rs232 problem?

Some manufacturers of converters like this require you to install the driver software before connecting the converter to the computer. I would suggest going into device manager and uninstalling the converter, restart the computer. Hopefully on the driver disk there is a "setup" or "install" utility that can be executed, run this install and after it is done connect the converter to the USB port on the computer and let the New Hardware Wizard do its thing. If this doesn't fix the problem try a different vendors converter.

Hello,I've got a plotter (well, it's a vinyl cutter), which is serial and according to the manual the pin-outs are as follow. It looks to be as if they put '1' for RTS when really they meant '7'. However, that aside, is this a standard straight through cable because TX/RX are not crossed but I thought if it were straight through then 4/6 and 7/8 wouldn't be linked?I'd rather just buy a cable, but this layout is confusing me Thanks for any help in letting me know about this layout.

Answer:Help with 9 pin RS232 pins.

Early serial connector layouts  were defined by the computer maker.  If that was they way they did it, that was the way it worked. Standard layouts became standard later. The layout you show in the picture is not exceptional at all. Here is another almost the same.http://www.diyha.co.uk/electronics/comm1.htmlAnd with photoshttp://www.google.com/search?q=9+pin+serial&hl=en&client=firefox-a&hs=yHq&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&prmd=ivns&tbm=isch&tbo=u&source=univ&sa=X&ei=Sc7LTbDjKZO4sAObjqToBg&ved=0CDIQsAQ&biw=853&bih=372I like this one:

How do I determine if the USB port is actually getting data to/from the system's COM port?

Some info:
- I have Vista Home Premium
- I purchased a Generic USB to RS232 adapter (from China) based on a PL2303 chip.
- The driver that came with the adapter seems to have installed properly.
- I have RealTerm installed.
- I jumpered Tx to Rx plus other pins on the male DB9 connector.
- I sought help from Prolific (re PL2303), but found nothing helpful.

But I don't know how to look for data passing through the adapter. What I type on the keyboard does not show up on the RealTerm screen.
I've worked with RS232 for years, and know about the signal-type on the USB port.
But now I am stumped, and about to cut the vinyl covers of the adapter.

Question: RS232 vs. Parallel

While working on a larger problem I found I was not quite sure of the port and cableling names. Is DB-25 RS232 the same as a Parallel port? Also, What is RS422 and RS485.

I know that DB-9 is RS232 and a serial port, so I assume that DB-25 RS232 is simiar to a serial port but I think I may be getting it mixed up with a standard Parallel port as well.

I had found one site but it was too technical for what I need to know. I just want to know an example of it's purpose and what type of connecter they use.

If someone could straighten me out on all this it would help me a lot.

[in case your wondering about the larger problem...it involves Punch Press machines, controls, and a BTR board. It seems most BTR's use a serial (DB9 RS232 connection) but ours uses what I am calling the parallel port]

Hi allI am thinking of buying a new lap-top (nothing fancy) but I note that none seem to have an RS232 port any more.I MUST have RS232 because one use of the laptop would be in communicating with all sorts of strange devices that use RS232 (using all sorts of software).I know that USB to RS232 converters exist BUT now to the question:One piece of software I use is Hyperterminal and it "looks" for ports (eg RS232), but as far as I can tell, doesn't see USB (my son's laptop only has USB, and Hyperterminal only comes up with TCP, modem and COM4 (IIRC) which is the infra-red port). And all the other software (i.e. other than Hyperterminal) just seems to find COM1 and then works. Thus, does anyone know how all these RS232 bits of software could find the "port" via USB? Would the USB to RS232 converter cable have software that turns USB into COM1?Has anyone used stuff like Hyperterminal via USB?Thanks for any help.Skeletal

Question: RS232 problem

This is for the really old hands...

Got this Seiko labelprinter on Com4 (hispeed pci serial card).
My mobo is Asus P5Q3 wifi-ap deluxe.
I am always on a hell of a ride before I get this to work, these are the options shown in device mgr.:
bps 9600...115200 (several tried)
databits 8
parity none
stop bits 1
flow control none/hardware/xon-xoff (think hardware was the control of choice when it at at last worked for prior W7 installs: Beta, RC, W7)
Com 4

Msg "printer communication error".
Only possible setting on the printer is the com port.

Now I can try for days changing this and that and maybe as before it starts to work "just like that", but it is annoying: I had a crash and reinstalled W7 Ultimate.

W7 gives me a choice of two universal drivers, V8 and V10, tried to change to V8 but that doesn't change anything.

Anyone?

Answer:RS232 problem

Normally you don't need to change settings on the port itself. I would look towards a driver issue here (check for drivers for the printer itself that are comparable with W7)

Question: No RS232 support

First, I appologize for this being so long-----I have a laptop I was given to use at work that is dual booted into Windows 98 and XP Professional. The Windows 98 is being used for the DOS architecture only. It is not a full operating system setup. I use this DOS for operating a data acquisition machine. However, this new laptop does not have an RS232 port for the DB9 adapter cable that is on the data machine. What I am trying to do is to use a USB conversion cable as this laptop has many USB ports. I know I need a USB driver for this to work. I went to the adapter's webpage and downloaded the driver for Win98 (as there is no driver support for DOS). Here is my dilemna: being that Win98 is not a full operating system, the driver will not load. Is there some way I can manually place the driver in config.sys and autoexec.bat in the DOS architecture. I have tried many configurations that did not work. Unfortunately this data system has to run in DOS only.

Answer:No RS232 support

No.It would have to be a driver written specifically for DOS to work properly.

The UPS doesn't have to be connected to the PC via USB or serial to protect it so you can use it as is.

Buy it will likely work for management with a USB to Serial adapter, Windows 7 has built in support for many APC UPS's out of the box. You may also find newer APC software for your model on the APX website.

Look in Properties for COM2 and check the baud rate, parity, number of bits, etc is configured properly. The manual I found says 4800 baud, no parity, 8 data bits, 1 stop bit.

I have a CyberPower USB to RS232 adapter. From the research I have done this should create a Com Port in my "Device Manager" so that programs
are then able to use it. I have researched this specific device and there are apparently problems with how it works on WIndows 8.1 but I have not been able to find a solution. The driver for the device was installed by WIndows plug-and-play controls. It decided
that the "HID-compliant vendor-defined device" driver version 6.3.9600.16384 was appropriate, however there is no Com Port in the "Device Manager" and instead a "USB Input Device" appears corresponding to the adapter each time
it is plugged in. Under the "Devices and Printers" the "Unspecified" device "CPS RS232 USB Bridge for UPS" shows up.

When I attempt to use drivers from a different source (the manufacturer of the USB to RS232 adapter), the plug-and-play ignore the new drivers and use the ones from above.

How can I get the Com Port created so that I can use the adapter properly?

Is there a way to circumvent the plug-and-play and use the driver from the manufacturer?

Thank you for your help.

Answer:CPS RS232 USB Bridge for UPS - not creating Com Port

Hi,
Regarding current situation, let?s try to manually install the driver by following these steps:

Device manager -> Right click the device and choose update driver -> Browser my computer for driver software -> Let me pick from a list of device driver? -> Have disk -> choose the driver manually to install.

Then let me know whether this device can work fine.
For further troubleshooting, please post back the image for descript more detailed about your issue.

Has anyone else had similar problem? Do I need to buy prober cable with driver cd included?

Thank you

Answer:Usb to serial rs232 no working drivers

You need a Prolific PL2303. Its the ONLY one I've found that will work with my wife's Singer Embroidery machine. It works on both Win 7 and Win 8.

I can't get my usb to rs232 cable to install and vista keeps indexing the com port as it trys the next install. I have downloaded the driver, updated the driver, deleted the driver and reloaded the driver to no avail. Now it shows 26 com ports in use and tells me the device I am trying to install is trying to use a display name that is already in use. How do I clear this up so I can install this device?

Hello All,

As a surveyor, I'm trying to slowly solve all the glitches on my new Windows 8.1 laptop.

1. Mouse

I often visit this NSW government site SIX Maps

When navigating the map, you use the mouse scroll wheel to zoom in or out and hold down the left mouse button to pan.

In my new windows 8.1 laptop, the scroll and pan functions won't work.

Iv'e tried 4 different mice and none of them work but they all work on my old XP laptop.

I've also tried 2 browsers (Chrome and IE)

I have also been in touch with the NSW goverment support team to no avail.

Looking in control panel, I couldn't recognise anything that would help.

Does anyone have any ideas?
2. USB to RS232 serial port cable replicator

This cable is used to download/upload information to the survey instrument. It worked fine on Windows XP, but will not work on Windows 8.1. It may be something to do with the port configuration.

Please note that the software is very old and I had to create a virtual XP machine using VMWARE to run it. (As well as some other obsolete software such as XTGOLD and Q.EXE! Any one remember these? I've yet to come across any file editing program to equal Q.EXE)

Hopefully someone will have some ideas otherwise I'll have to go back to the manufacturer and they'll charge more than I paid for the computer!!!

Thanks in advance for your help,

Michael

Answer:Problem with mouse and USB to RS232 cable

Well, I tried the link you provided and I was able to scroll using IE, Logitech Mouse, and Windows 8.1 Pro (64 bit). However, when I first accessed the site, it said that their site would work better with FireFox or Chrome. I have Chrome installed but did not try it.

USB to RS232, which end connects where? Does the USB end connect to the computer or the survey equipment? When running your XP, does it provide an error when you try to connect upload/download data? I would think that your VMWARE and XP will be able to handle everything, but you will need to play with port settings to have everything configured the way it was before. For example, my wife's computer is Windows 8.1 Pro, and I have her run VMWARE and Windows XP so she can use the embroidery module for her sewing machine. The one thing you have to do is to make sure that when you start the VM machine, you must tell the VM machine to use anything plugged into the USB ports to be used in the XP and not the Host machine.

Anyway, don't give up yet and keep poking around you'll find a solution.

Dear Friends;
We have many software installed in Laptop having WXP for trouble shooting purpose at machines. Communication of many devices is done through RS232. Some time it happen that a we fail to communicate with a device while everything is ok because some other software has already captured RS232 port of Laptop and it is hard for me to find out which software has done that.
Yesterday, after making communication with a PC via two soft wares, I tried to hibernate the PC but it failed to Hibernate as Com port was busy/captured while all the programs were closed. Is there any way to know which program has captured the Com port?

Answer:How do we know which program captured RS232 port??

I have used Portmon with XP 32 bit: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb896644.aspx
I am not aware of an equivalent utility though for 64 bit XP.

Here is the deal. Where I work we have a ticketmaster application that uses a seperate RS232 network. This means special lines that run to a special little ticketmaster box in my switch room. Needless to say it is a royal PITA when we have to move these computers connected to this special network.

So to fix this I was hoping there were some kind of RS232 to ether net adapters out there. I know they exist, but I think the solution I need is special. i need an Adapter on the PC side that talks to an adapter on the switch side. So basically the flow would go like this:

COM Port --> Convertor Box --> Ethernet --> Converter Box --> Com Port on Special Box

Anyone have any suggestions?

Answer:Piggy Back RS232 Over Ethernet

Is it realy Ethernet or justr cat5. (meaning is there going to be a ethernet switch in between?)

I have a need for an RS232 port probably PCI, but I see such a wide diversity of prices. Which should I choose? Some have a UART and some do not. Do I need a UART? Thanks, Jim

P.S. I'll be using it with ham radio software called Ham Radio Deluxe (HRD) and a ham radio transceiver Yaesu FT-950

Answer:Adding an RS232 PCI port to my desktop

Check to see if you have a PCI slot. Some newer PC's only have PCIe slots and if they have a PCI slot it is a "bridged" slot to the PCIe bus and many PCI devices will not work or work properly on a bridged PCI slot.

I would check and see what others with that software are using.

Hello Techguy
I have a USB to RS232 converter which came with a driver disk. I can load the driver in and everything seems to load OK. However, when I then plug in the converter, it can not find the driver.

What it seems to be looking for is a driver called "USB2.0-SER!". However, the device seems to be a Prolific chip device and I would have expected to see it looking for something like "PL2303" or similar. I searched the computer for a driver with this name but no luck.

I went to the Prolific website and downloaded their driver but that didn't work any better.

I know these devices work as I have seen them working on other computers. How do I get it going?

I have purchased a usb to serial adapter but the drivers are not functional.

Every time I plug the cable inside my computer i get a USB device not recognized message. Under device management > Universal Serial Bus controllers > Unknown Device.

The drivers that i have is called "PL-2303 Driver Installer". Even after installing this driver, I still have no luck. I know it is possible to update the driver but the driver format would have to be in a .INF file. In this case the driver is a .exe file so i have no idea what to do.

Any help would be really greatly appreciated also the drivers are available @ http://www.prolific.com.tw/eng/downloads.asp?ID=31

If the device is functional and installed, it should be under the COM ports in device manager but like i said before it is not and is listed as "Unknown Device".

Since installing SP3 to my Windows XP Pro system my RS232 serial port no longer works. I have a Hyperpen tablet that has an RS232 connection so it no longer functions. Is there a converter that I can attach to the male RS232 so I can connect via a USB port? I have seen a USB 2.0 to RSB (male) serial adapter dongle but that is of no use. I'd appreciate any suggestions towards resolving this.

Answer:RS232 serial port not working

Have you checked in Device Manager to see if it is working there , or if there any conflicts . It won't have just broken , it must be a software problem as it occurred as you loaded SP3 , it might just need reconfiguring , what does the tablet need in terms of port speed etc. , data bits , flow control etc. ? After several attempts at trying different driver versions, no drivers seem to load now.

These drivers are for a Prolific PL2303 USB to RS232 converter - although I did not buy the device from that company. The drivers used to install easily and I actually had one that partially worked.

At one point, I went to the Windows/System32 and manually deleted all the files and "packages" for those drivers. This likely screwed everything up and I don't know how to recover. I have the option of doing a full system recovery, but it will take days of work to arrive back at the current configuration.

After several attempts to install and uninstall all these drivers again, nothing seems to work. When I plug in the device, Vista looks for the driver in Windows Update and of course finds none. In Device Manager (DM), the annotation for the Port is Unknown device. When I try to manually install the driver through the DM, it fails. The code is sometimes 1 and other times 19.

System Info says I'm running Vista Home Premiun X86-based PC, but the sticker on the laptop says Athlon 64 X2 dual-core (Acer Aspire 4530).

Any fixes?

Hi - here's an idiot question for you. I need to know whether or not my laptop (Dell Inspiron 2200) has something called an RS232 serial port. I think it probably doesn't, as I couldn't find it mentioned in System Information. But I'd like to know for sure before I fork out £30 for a USB adapter, which is what I'm told I'll need if there is no RS232 port. It's needed for a programme called DesignaKnit 7 - details of which can be found at http://www.softbyte.co.uk/dk7.htm, if anyone is interested. So, can anyone tell me how to find out for certain whether or not I have this port? Thanks v much, Helen

Answer:Do I have an RS232 serial port for cable link?

You do not have an RS-232 port on that laptop. Note that the site in question has specific recommendations for the RS-232 <-> USB link device, and I'd pick one of their recommendations: http://www.softbyte.co.uk/usb_conv.htm

On a box running Server 2003 the application needs to talk out a serial port to an OPTO-22 I/O system. The Optoscan program from the manufacturer works just fine. Our application (which has been used many times before successfully) is not sending or receiving message. It appears that another application has grabbed the port.

Does anyone know how to identify which program is controlling a serial port?

Thanks

Answer:Identify program controlling rs232 port

Portmon is a utility that should be able to tell you the name of the process that is accessing the port: http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sysinternals/processesandthreads/portmon.mspx

I use it at work as a RS-232/RS-422 protocol analyzer.

I b ought one of these adapters off eBay so I could connect my GPS to my computer via USB, my old cable was the serial port. Anyhow, the seller told me it would work with Vista but she did not tell me it wouldn't work with Vista Premium. When I connect the device it tries to find the drivers but is unable to do so...does anyone know where I can get the right driver? The CD that came with the cable is worthless. Thanks
