I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: How to find computer turn on & turn off time

Have a look in the System event log. Normally a few events are logged at shutdown and startup.

When I start the computer up, the Windows Boot Manager screen comes on. I press enter, but every time the desktop comes up, the icons have rearranged themselves to be as close to the left hand side of the screen as possible. Also, the computer is chucking me out of games sometimes, when before they didnt. Could I be infected?

This is the first post I have done on this forum, so if I have done something wrong, please let me know. Thanks

Hi, everybody!

I'm having a rather frustrating time at the moment. About a week ago, my computer stopped booting into Windows. It started by blue screen of deathing (IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL) about five minutes after booting into Windows. Then, it wouldn't even boot into Windows, it would blue screen and restart. So, I tried to do a "Repair Installation" Windows install because I thought it was a driver error, but it kept saying that Windows couldn't find my hard drives. They also show up differently in my bios now. (I'm using two 200gb SATA hard drives) I tried installing Windows onto an IDE hard drive, but that kept blue screening as well, this time throwing out various memory errors.

So, I replaced the memory, and I booted it up and before it even got to the Windows Install screen, the computer totally
froze. Then, I couldn't restart it. The power light would come on for a couple of seconds, then go off again. All drives, fans and lights were working inside the computer but that was all. I figured it was the CPU because I had a slight mishap the other day involving the heat sink, the CPU and the fact that the thermal paste had baked the two together, resulting in me ripping it out of the motherboard (no bent pins, but it wasn't fun). Either way, I replaced the CPU and it booted first time no worries. I restarted it and went into the BIOS to re-do my settings (I reset the bios at the same time I replaced the CPU) and after loadin... Read more

The display and the sleep feature timers do not work. I just did a complete restore to try and correct this problem and another problem, which was no restore points and no ability to create one. The restore points are working for now, I mean that I was able to create a restore point. The display and sleep timer, not so, still a problem.

I've had this desktop Win8 computer since November and honestly I don't know if this has been a problem the whole time or not. Definitely, not the display, I know it has worked, but the sleep timer I'm not sure. I set the timer and just assume it sleeps and then goes into hibernation after a certain amount of time. With all the refreshing and restoring and changing over to this computer, I've not been paying much attention to the sound of the fan or the missing orange color on the power button (not visible, on the side of the computer).

I've set the timer through the Power Options feature in the Control Panel to 10 minutes for the sleep and to turn off the display to 3 minutes. Neither of them respond after set times. The computer is still wide awake and the display is not gone.

I have also gone to the "Change Advance Power Settings" menu box and turned off the hybrid sleep, which didn't help, and the Multimedia Settings in this menu box to turn on the setting "Allow The Computer To Sleep". Neither of these fixes did anything.

How can the computer not respond to something so basic and fundamental to its desig... Read more

Hi there I am in desparate need of some help please. One night in a rush I turned off my computer quick, while I was doing it I was trying to shut off my cordless mouse and I accidently clicked it, and now when I turn my computer on I get a small window pop up titled Personalized settings, and in the box it reads, setting up personalized settings for: Windows Desktop update, internet explorer, browser customizations. And all my folders on my desktop disapeared, and everything I had in "my documents" folder is also gone. All my favorites are gone from my browser, actually everything is gone on my browsers as well. So I have to manually go in and reset everything. Then when I turned my computer off and back on, the same thing happened and everything was wiped clean again. So now I don't dare turn it off. I tried to do a system restore 3 times for 3 different dates and it would not do it. So what if I tried to do a system restore? Please help me, I work on this computer and I need all the files that are gone. Is there a way to bring back everything I lost? My computer is a HP desktop with windows XP Media Center Edition 2005.

Please help. Every time I turn on computer I receive a different BSOD. I can't even give my computer info because I haven't been able to stay on it long enough. The following are the BSOD that I just received in the last hour.
I has also started with Windows Error Recovey which I have done but that has froze on me or hasn't helped. I have also reset computer to its original state. Now as soon as I turn on it goes to a BSOD almost immediately. I know you need more info about computer, so if you can tell me what info it is you need, I will get it. I can tell you that it is a desktop.

Answer:Different BSOD every time I turn on computer

Did you build the system, or did you buy it built by a vendor (HP, Dell, etc.)?

These are the BSOD errors that I can remember that I have seen:

Some times when I turn my computer on it gets to the BIOS and ends up in an infinite restart loop.

I have reinstalled my operating system 2 times but the errors still occur.

Please help after suffering these problems for the best part of 6 months I've all but given up hope!

i just realized how close RHCP is to DHCP - entirely different meanings though!

Anyways, as far as I know, you have to have something else already online and do a "wake-on-lan" command.

Though it looks like this won't "power up" but only wake it up from hibernation. Which I hate hibernation, many things break and you have to restart anyways.

I have a bit of a strange issue with my computer. Forgive me if I'm a little too descriptive, but I'm not sure which details are relevant and which are not for such a problem. First, the specs:

Model: eMachines T2984
Operating System: Windows XP Service Pack 2
Processor: Intel Celeron D Processor 340, 2.93 GHZ, 256K L2 Cache, 533 MHZ FSB
Power Supply Unit: Bestec Model: ATX-250-12E REV: P7
Motherboard: I can't tell, but it appears to be an Intel motherboard by the number of Intel labels on it
RAM: 512 MB DDR SD originally, added 1 GB a couple of months ago
Let me know if you need anything else...

Yesterday, I got home from shopping around 1PM, and I tried to start the computer. I pushed the power button, and nothing happened. I checked all of the cords, and they were all plugged in. Not knowing what else to do, I opened up the case to see if there was something obviously wrong. The only thing that I noticed (other than a bunch of dust) was that the power supply unit was still hot. I shut the computer down about 5 hours earlier after about 20 minutes of use, so it seemed strange that the power supply was still hot. I unplugged the computer just in case there was some sort of fire hazard.

At this point, I called a friend who suggested that the problem might be with the motherboard or the power supply unit.

A few hours later, I plugged it back in to try to get it to work. As soon as I plugged it in, the entire unit suddenly started "running" by itsel... Read more

Answer:Computer Doesn't Turn on, Fans and Some Lights Turn on Automatically

I would suspect that the Power Supply Unit (PSU) is going south. If you have a spare one laying around, install it and see if the problem goes away.
You can buy a new, better PSU from Newegg for about $40.00. I have used a Thermaltake 430 watt in one of my machines for some time now and it works well.
You will have to check the size of your PSU to be sure a new one will fit into the eMachine.
Here's the page with that PSU on it. It's the last one on the list.

I have recently bought a new Asus machine running Windows 8.1.

I have set my own custom plan for power settings in the control panel and have that selected. However when I turn the computer off then later turn it back on, the power plan has changed. It seems to do this every time. But it's usually one of the ones preset by Asus (Power4Gear).

Any ideas and help would be really appreciated!

Answer:Power Plan changes each time on turn computer on

maybe a program with automatic startup is changing it.. what does it always change back to??
**EDIT** oh i guess you answered that.. yes exactly see, its a program switching it for you.. so start looking into your startup and services to see what is set to automatically start..

do this by command prompt and then typing "msconfig" and then "services.msc" and then press "Ctrl, Shift, and ESC" and look at (startup tab)

*old* for example i have samsung magician installed on my machine and that created a samsung power profile and luckily it hasn't so far, but it could somehow set itself to always use that power plan if i wasn't careful in choosing my settings correctly when i installed it.. etc..

Good Job on the Hi Res photos. Does this happen after the computer posts? Do you hear any beep codes?
Take a look in your BIOS to see if you can turn off any extended tests also.
IF none of this helps, try unplugging various devices one by one and boot to possibly narrow down the issue.
PS that computer shipped with Vista or XP did the issue start after upgrading the OS?

I just put together my first computer 6 months ago. It abruply shutdow in the middle of writing a paper for school. I couldn't turn it back on right away. after trying a few times, it turned on. All the fans are working even the fan on the power supply, the motherboards lights are on. My graphic card in on the motherboard. I have desktop that is less than 2 years old and it is having two problems:

First, if I step away from the computer for a few minutes and come back to the computer, the screen is black and none of the keys will wake up the monitor. Also, I am unable to turn off the tower, even when holding down the button for 10 seconds. The only way to turn it off is to unplug the tower. When I plug it back in, I get everything back on the screen just like it was before I walked away.

The other problem is that the system clock will not keep time. This just happened a week or so ago. Whenever I manually update the sync, it resets, but won't keep time for long.

From reading other posts on this forum, it seems that the CMOS battery may be an issue. Since the computer isn't that old and isn't used constantly, does that still seem reasonable? Is that normally covered under a warranty? I have never had a problem with other computers.

Answer:computer locks up; won't turn off; clock loses time

It is very annoying as my computer can not successfully be in sleep for or hibernation mode for long periods of time. Once I turn it on, it either loads into windows (usually the case), then it shortly freezes and shows the following error message.

Once in a while it would go straight to the error message before it even logs into windows.
I don't know what it is.
For a period of time, I thought it had to do with my wireless card because I manually upgraded it myself but in truth, the same thing happened (once in a blue moon) with my original wireless card as well. This was even right after I bought the computer.
It used to be that it happened once in a while, but now it is every single time. Now, I do not remember the last time it was in sleep mode for a good period of time and it successfully loaded everything up correctly.
Thank you in advance.

PS: I set up my computer to take in Small Dumps.

I have included my "Grab All" diagnostic statistics as well.

Answer:BSOD After each time I turn on my computer from standby or hibernation

Hi Matthew

The F4 BSOD has to do with your hard drive . Do you have an SSD if you do try updating the firmware . If you have a regular spinning hard drive might want to run a test on it using the manufacture diagnostic software .

I have cpu meter installed on one of my computers. I used to use PC Meter to make the temperatures show up but it quit working. CPU Temp kept giving me an error saying "PC Meter not detected". After an hour I decided to give up and use Core Temp to make CPU Meter's temperature work.
Core temp works great and all but every time I turn my computer on, the Core temp window pops up. How do I disable to window popping up on startup without completely disabling the program? I want it to go to the taskbar on startup instead of going to the taskbar and launching the main window. I don't have time to mess with all the options and keep restarting because the computer that has this problem has a LOT of drivers and crap that make it take FOREVER to turn on. I'm just hoping someone knows how to do that in Core Temp so I don't have to spend around an hour trying everything.

Answer:Make Core Temp window not pop up every time I turn on my computer

Takes a split second to simply click minimize. If you have that much during startup then you probably need to disable some stuff anyways. I don't see why you would need Coretemp on boot anyways.

Every time I turn on my computer, an error message says something like:

"C:\WINDOWS\system32\scfyea.dll can't be run, rejected"
(It is in chinese, so i don't know how to translate it completely >.<)

And I have to click "Ok" for my computer to keep loading all the other things before I can do anything.

I got no idea what is that, if it is a virus or who knows.

What can I do to get rid of that? Or to repair what is damaged if so?

Thanks in advance.

I am using a client computer that is connected to a modem via a LAN cable which is in a neighboring house as far as about 50 meters. The host computer is there. The host computer is only using Internet Connection Sharing (without a router) to share its Internet connection with me. Within this network there are only two computers, the one I use (as client) in my house and the other one is the host computer as I mentioned earlier.

How do I know that the host computer is being turned on or off?

The purpose is to know so that I can use all the bandwidth from the modem when the host computer is not turn on. Because there are no restrictions on bandwidth from the host computer, and I just wanted to use all the available bandwidth only when the host computer is not turned on.

Both computers use Windows 7.

after serching all night to find out why his computer is in limbo, i leave my brother's house without finding needed help. his computer won't turn off...the fan, a couple little lights until he unplugs it from the wall. first, the computer did a restart all by itself, he said, then it would not turn on, except the fan and little lights inside that won't turn off. he took out the hard drive and it functions in his other computer...he puts the hard drive back into the new computer and it will not turn on or completely turn off that fan. he tried the "hold the on/off button for at least five seconds" step and nothing changes. he has had the computer for a year and a half, so he really wants to figure this out. how can he even get it to turn on so he could do a safe start up? so far we cannot find a way to troubleshoot. he have checked the cords, perhaps there was a freeze up that began this loop and that's why the fan stays on? please say this is something you have heard of and there may be a solution. the advice we have found usually goes back to buying a new computer. thanks in advance, tea

I have Windoes XP Home on my laptop. Recently, the computer takes a long time (about a minute or two) to respond after I click on "Start / Turn Off Computer" and then it shows my shut down options (Standby, Turn Off, Restart). However, the computer responds very quickly when I shut down from the Task Manager. I conducted all the appropriate tools (check disk, defrag, full virus/spyware scan, disk cleanup and disabled all non-critical processes).

I have an Acer Aspire M5 that I got a few weeks ago. I'm new to Windows 8. For the past week or so, every time I turn it on I get a message saying my PC ran into a problem that caused it to restart, then it lists these files, the same ones every time:

After that, this window pops up: Attachment 24311 Note: I've never actually gotten a blue screen.

That offers no help though, since my computer has Intel and not AMD. Also, it takes the computer at least 10 minutes to shut down. Not sure if that has anything to do with this. Other than those two things, it runs the same as it has been.

If you have got an XP install disc to do a recovery if it goes bad, i'd just hit the reset button, and boot into safemode straight away [press F8 as it is booting] then schedule a chkdsk and restart.

to schedule chkdsk...

Go to "my computer" and right click on the drive windows is on.

Select "properties" then go to the "tools" tab and click "check now" on the error checking section.

It will tell you that it cant perfrom it and ask you do you want to schedule it for next time...
click "yes" and reboot.Click to expand...

Just got a new to me P3 computer up and running. Sometimes during star up it does not recognize the PS2 keyboard. Which makes it hard to go into my password protected User ID. When trying to shut down it will keep a few things running like some fans and the CD drive. But it does not sound like the Hard Drive is spinning.

If I use the XP to shutdown it goes into this limbo stage of neither off nor on, same goes for the power button on the front of the computer. It will either start up the computer or turn it to the limbo mode. Upon starting up, I can use the mouse to get it all the way into a non password protected XP users screen but can't do anything without the keyboard working. In the process of setting up I have had everything working earlier today but this keyboard and limbo status has been an intermitent problem. What should I try?

Hi everyone,

While turning on my computer the it turns on, fans are starting to move, but screen won't turn on, and the beep of the bios is not heard.

pressing the sleep/reset button next to the turn-on button computer goes off, pressing it again turns on the computer without any problem. (now I'm working with the same computer) i thought maybe it's the power supply that gives me problem but changed between computers, this still gives me trouble and other computer works good (besides its many problems ). any idea what to do?

Thanks in advance

BTW, while trying to write this thread I got all this terms that i didn't know how to call in English, like power supply - is that the box which connects to the power and to all the m-board and drives? is there an English computer terms dictionary?

I've got an HP Pavillion s3707c slimline desktop, and i'm using the factory recovery discs to reinstall Vista before I upgrade to windows 7. My problem is the cyberlink powerdirector stalls at about 53% while downloading and this is sitting behind the blue screen that says Do Not turn off your PC during this one time setup process, etc. How do I fix this? I've tried reinstalling the recovery discs again and this problem keeps happening, ugh! Can anyone give me a solution? What else do I need to do?

Answer:Do not turn off your PC during this one time

Have you tried cleaning the disc? How long have you waited at the 53% mark before calling it quits?

Hello everyone,It seems that my XPS 9550 has a motherboard issue. I have got this laptop for several months before this problem happen. At first, the power button needs to pressed twice before the computer can turn on. Pressing it once will only cause the button to light up and fans to start spinning for only seconds. Then, after about a week, the problem got worse. I have to static discharge the BIOS and charge the computer for about 12 to 24 hours to get it working again. The light indicator did show that the CMOS battery is dead several times, and I had the CMOS battery replaced, but still no luck. I have run the diagnostics many times, but everything seems perfect. And I can get into the OS once the computer powers post points out a similar problem, but I think it has nothing to do with the battery or most of the motherboard components.Does anyone have encountered this before? Any advice will be appreciated.- Peter

So I had a problem with my T500's backlight initially and long story short, disassembling the computer has now caused the problem in the title. Whenever I plug in the battery/charger and push the power button, the fan will spin and the hdd will whirr a bit, but then after about 3 seconds, the fan will stop and the hdd will click off and cease whirring. The computer will no longer respond to the power button regardless of how many times nor how long the power button is held. I'm looking directly at the wires that carry power. Everything seems to be plugged in. I did the lenovo power trick (IE the 10 one second presses followed by the 30 second long press) and the computer does the 1-3-3-1 beep when I take out the RAM. The monitor is not plugged into it in any way, shape, or form. I do not know if this affects it. However, I have tried attaching the monitor and it still does this. Is there a piece that may have been knocked loose or something? I'm willing to try anything right now because at this point it's a literal brick now.

Answer:Lenovo Thinkpad T500 will turn on for roughly 3 seconds, then turn off and stay off.

Hi npesina, welcome to the forums,
there could be different reasons for the system behaving the way you describe, my suggestions;
remove all hard, SSD and optical drives to see if you experience the same,
remove all RAM, without replacing the drives, and test to see if you receive a system beep code,
remove all components which had previously been removed to test again.
The ultimate test would be to remove everything attached to the mainboard including the CMOS (BIOS) battery excluding the power socket, CPU and the fan. When you attach the power cable the system should come to life, the fan should run and beep codes sound.  After that its really just a case of putting the system back together one component at a time testing inbetween each component replacement, leave the main battery and CMOS battery until last to save having to always connect / disconnect the keyboard in order to turn the system on.
If at any point you experience the same issue as now it may well be that the component you replaced at that point or it's attachment socket on the mainboard  is the culprit.

Ad-Hoc requires that you restart the session each time.

Connectify pro has an auto start option that does this but it's a paid version, connectify lite is free but I'm not sure if has auto start.

I doesn't seem to be in either the Internet Explorer tool bar under tool, Pop-up Blocker, my choice to to pick "Turn on Pop-Up Blocker" or well, I can't find where the pop-up blocker would be on Yahoo.

May be it is in one of the other programs like AVG Free or ?? Any ideas?

Bought my Y2P straight from Lenovo, turned in last week for display that flickers only when on battery power with brightness under 70%, plug it in when brightness is lower than 70 and it is fine. They responded in work order that problem found but part is back ordered. Didn't state the part that is back ordered, but no eta listed either.Very frustrating, **bleep** near a $2000 laptop, i7 512gb model, is this normal for Lenovo? First time buyer from them and probably the last with this type of customer service.Really stings that they are putting out a new revision soon with these type of issues still out there.

Answer:Warranty turn around time.

The sad part is that there is no fix for the issue you described. The best thing to do is to turn off auto-refresh rate on the Intel CP. Your device will probably get a part replacement that won't solve anything, except changing a new part for a refurbished part (that was initally defective--probably a mother board or a display panel). If it does come back fixed, you will see it was a software edit in the Intel CP. Then again, that is not a proper fix. I would call. If the ETA for the part is outragerous, then request they order the part and ship it to your house. Tell them you will do the repair. If you can't fix it software based, then send them the laptop when the part comes in (send the part with the laptop) and have them preform the fix. Tell them you were unable to open up the computer and that you would like them to preform the part switch. Essentially doing it this way, you can have them fix it but, also have your computer while you wait for the part.  If you fix it via software, return the part (they will ship the part with the contingency that you return the defective part). Just slip a note saying that the problem was fixed via software and the the component being returned is not defective. Granted, they will be dealing with a few shipping labels, however, this defect is not your fault and it is not fair for them to leave you computerless for a long period of time. At the end of the day, I bet you did not pay 2k to be without a compute... Read more

I built a PC about 4 months ago, and I noticed that sometimes it takes up to 30 tries to get the PC to turn on. If I push the power buttom, some lights will come on, but unless the CD-ROM light flashes, the system will not display video or boot. Then I just try again and it works after a few attempts.

Any ideas what could be causing this?

Hey guys. I hope this thread is going in the correct section of the forums. I am experiencing problems with getting my hard disk drives to turn off when not in use. I have changed the settings in power options under the ''balanced'' preferred power plan and have set it to turn off after 90 minutes if the drives are idle. This doesn't seem to do anything, i have tried setting a different time limit, still no joy with that either. Anyone know what could be causing this? It did used to work perfectly before when my PC was new but now it has stopped working. No idea why. I am running Windows 7 Ultimate SP1 64bit. Any help with this issue is welcome. Thank you.

Hey,I got an ideapad U110 last Christmas, but the keyboard has already begun to flake out on me. While doing regular typing, my "5" key made a *snap!* sound and broke off slightly. The "6" key followed suit a couple days later. It detatched completly from the board, and theres a visible break in the plastic key retainer thing (not part of the actual board thank god). A couple other keys often fail to respond during fast typing if they are not hit spot on. This is very disappointing since I use this thing mainly as a note taking computer. This will most likely be my last ideapad purchase. Ive never had to deal with such a dumb issue on the Thinkpad line. Anyways, I contacted support the other night, and they have a fedex repair box on the way to my place that im supposed to stick the laptop in, and then ship back to them. It should be here today (wednesday). The lady on the phone said there is about a 7 day turn around time from the moment fedex picks the box up from me to ship back. How realistic is this timeframe? I have finals coming up, and it would be nice to have my notebook with all of my stuff ready three weeks from now. Im doing a backup of all of my important stuff on an external and transfering it onto a backup computer just in case, so its not a huge issue to be without my ideapad for a reasonable amount of time. For everyone who has had to send their system back for physical repairs...Did they get it back to you in roughly 7 days time? Answer:Repair Turn Around TIme?

I have had good experience with their repair turnaround, although I suspect the specific repair needed will be a factor.  For instance, what if they don't have the necessary parts available?  I had my hard drive replaced and was without my ideapad for less than a week -- it would have been shorter but for Lenovo's use of second-day air on Thursdays (which means you get it on Monday versus Friday for next day service).  My only other peeve is that they didn't send me any notification that it was on the way back to me -- I had to call and ask.

Hi there, Since a couple of weeks, my chromebook doesn't turn on on the first try. The screen turns on but stay black and I have to hold the shutdown button and start it again. Sometime it works, other time, I may have to repeat this more than 10 times before I can acces my computer. I did a powerwash to try to resolve the problem, but it continues. I bought my CB3-111  on april so it's just a few months old and I don't undersant why it already has a problem. Thanks for your help!! Maxime

For the last couple of days I'd been getting BSOD crashes and as naive as I was ignored them and would restart the computer. Recently though, any time I try to run the computer it will run and show all the app icons for 5 seconds before crashing. I can still run it in safe mode though if that helps. Thanks

looks to me like it could be a ram and or driver issue. I would try testing the ram using memtest86+ and run it for several passes to see if it ever comes up with any errors. here is the link to that:

OS= Windows 7
He's a great kid, and we gave him his own laptop a few months ago. But we need to limit his useage. I researched Window Parental Controls, but there is a program out there called Time Monitor that sounds a little better.
Ideally, I would like for him to be able to turn on his PC himself, without someone logging in for him, and then be restricted to 2 hours of useage or whatever time limit we decide to set.
I was thinking someone would have to turn on his PC for him with a secret password, and then he would open his personal account, which limits useage. This seems a little clunky.
I've save my passwords, but up to now I have not dinked around much with administrator accounts, standard accounts, etc.
Help is appreciated, thank you.
P.S. I have gotten the impression that with Windows Parental Controls, I can only restrict blocks of time. In other words, the kid can only use the PC from 6:00 to 9:00. I want him to be able to use the PC anytime of day he wants (sort of) but be restricted to a total of 2 hrs or 3 hrs or whatever we set it. Is this possible with Windows Parental Control? I know it is with Time Monitor.

Answer:can my kid turn on his PC himself and still have time limits?

you might well get some great feedback here but perhaps might have better luck over at the autohotkey forum
also - understand that it is probably very well possible to find a script or an app but its not going to stop him from turning it back on.

Hello, I am new to the forums but I hope you will help with my problem.
Every day my pc crashes the first time I turn it on, only to restart later like nothing happened. I have a while with that problem, reinstalled windows but the problem is still there.

I have windows 7 home premium 64 OEM and I have about a year with it.
These are the dump files.
I hope I did everything right, if I messed up or you need more info please let me know,

Answer:BSOD every first time I turn on pc

These crashes were caused by memory corruption/exception (probably a driver).
Please run these two tests to verify your memory and find which driver is causing the problem.

* If you are overclocking anything reset to default before running these tests.
In other words STOP!!!

* If you have raid update its Driver.

*Download a copy of Memtest86 and burn the ISO to a CD using Iso Recorder or another ISO burning program. Memtest86+ - Advanced Memory Diagnostic Tool

*Boot from the CD, and leave it running for at least 5 or 6 passes.

Just remember, any time Memtest reports errors, it can be either bad RAM or a bad motherboard slot.

Test the sticks individually, and if you find a good one, test it in all slots.

Any errors are indicative of a memory problem.

If a known good stick fails in a motherboard slot it is probably the slot.

RAM - Test with Memtest86+

Driver verifier

Using Driver Verifier is an iffy proposition. Most times it'll crash and it'll tell you what the driver is. But sometimes it'll crash and won't tell you the driver. Other times it'll crash before you can log in to Windows. If you can't get to Safe Mode, then you'll have to resort to offline editing of the registry to disable Driver Verifier.

So, I'd suggest that you first backup your stuff and then make sure you've got access to another computer so you can contact us if problems arise. Then make a System Restore point (so you... Read more

Hi! @scottishbridget, Thanks for stopping by HP forums!

I understand that your PC shuts down intermittently.

Don't worry I will try to help you out.

Did you make any software or hardware or changes on your PC?

Please provide the product number of your PC to assist your better.

Please try the steps recommended below.

Many hardware drivers or operating system errors will cause the computer to display a specific error message before stopping the operation or shutting down the computer. However, if the Automatically restart option is enabled, an error message might not be displayed despite an error taking place. Disable this option to allow the computer to display the error message.
Follow these steps to disable the Automatically restart option:
In Windows, search for and open View advanced system settings.
Click Settings in the Startup and Recovery section.
Remove the check mark next to Automatically restart under System Failure, then click OK.
Restart the computer.
The computer no longer restarts automatically when a problem occurs. Instead, a blue screen appears with more useful information. You can now search for a resolution using the information in the error.

This is driving me crazy. My HP has Windows 7 and everytime it connects to the internet (wireless connection) Windows Live Messenger opens down in the left hand corner taskbar near the start menu. I close it, and fifteen minutes later it will open again.
I opened the options and unchecked the boxes pretaining to 'Run Windows Live Messenger when windows starts' but it still repeatedly opens. I use hotmail, but i really have no use for Messenger. The program is not listed under add/remove programs. Someone please help me turn this thing off.

Answer:Solved: Windows Live Messenger-TURN IT OFF TURN IT OFF!

It should be listed in Programs & Features under Windows Live Messenger or Windows Live Essentials. If you still can't find it listed then go to and re-download the installer, reinstall it, then uninstall it.

Running Windows Vista Ultimate.

Display turns off after about fifteen minutes regardless of whether I am actively using the computer or not. The only way to turn the display back on is to close and then open the lid. This disconnets me from AOL, so I have to sign back on again, and if I was emailing, I might lose my current email.

Under Power Options, I have 'Turn off the display' set to Never for both On Battery and Plugged in. Under 'Put the computer to sleep' I have both On battery and Plugged in set to never. Nonetheless, the display still shuts off while I am working.

What do I need to do to prevent the display from turning off at odd intervals?

sounds like your display drivers are crashing.

I can't turn my computer on. The fans and lights turn on for a second and then turn off. a few seconds later they'll turn back on and then turn back off. I've had this computer for 4+ months now, i built it myself. it recently started doing this but i'd just turn off the PSU (Power Supply Unit) and turn it back on and it woould fix it. now it doesnt fix it anymore. i've re-slotted the RAM (Random Access Memory) and pushed it in firmly, but that hasn't done anything. i've tried different power outlets and pushed everything into the MOBO (Motherboard), i havent messed around with CPU (Processor) because that's just a pain in the a**... i was wondering if there was anything else i could do before having to take it into a local repair shop, lol.

as for my computer specs

CPU (Processor): Fx-6300 AMD
GPU: R9-270x AMD
RAM (Random Access Memory): 8GB Ballistix sport
MOBO (Motherboard): ASRock 970 Extreme3 R2.0
PSU (Power Supply Unit): Corsair X500 w 80+
Case: Rosewill GALAXY

Answer:Fans turn on, lights blink and then turn off/on repeatedly.

First, I would unplug everything that isn't necessary. Everything external except for the keyboard and monitor. Internally, just leave the CPU, RAM and video card installed. See if it turns on. If not, you might try and test the power button. Disconnect the power button from the mobo. If the pin headers allow for it, use the reset button as the power button. If not, you can use a flat head screwdriver to power on the computer (cross the two pins for the power button with the blade of the screwdriver). If you do this, just be very careful. Touch only the power button pins and nothing else! You could easily damage components by touching the screwdriver to the wrong thing.

Some motherboards have a power button right on the board that you can press to power on the computer. I looked at a pic of your board and didn't notice one.

If that doesn't do it, plug the power button back in. You might try and play around with the RAM. I don't know if you have 2 or 4 sticks of RAM, but try and boot the computer with only one stick of RAM at a time. If there's a bad stick, you'll find it through this process of elimination.

If none of the above works, then it might be a bad PSU.

Hey guys, little help here please.
Sometimes when I try to turn on IS it tries to turn On but everything greys out and nothing happens. Last time I tried it was about 4 hrs ago and since then its been hung up there. I can't open IS from settings now, Loading... shows up and it crashes after ~20sec. I can't turn off wifi because it becomes 'frozen' and when I press Back/Start button nothing happens but if I long press back button it show my active window is Start screen even though I am still in Wifi settings. After I release button wifi closes and end up in start screen.
I know if I soft reset everything comes back to normal. 99% I can even turn on IS. But why does this happen and how do you solve this problem (I know in the past some ppl used to have it)

Answer:Internet sharing doesn't turn on + cant turn off wifi

After a bit of searching this was the only answer I could find.
Remove/uninstall your nokia acount, install access will get your internet sharing.
Not sure if that will help you or not but it's worth a shot.

Hello Folks,

I'm not sure if my issue is with hardware (possibly MB?) or graphics card, so please forgive me if I've posted in the wrong section. The first problem I was having was random blue screens of death that displayed graphic card driver issues. I was able to remedy that by updating my graphic drivers and have not had an issue since.

However, ever since then I have been running into another hardware or graphics-related issue that is random and completely stumping me. What is happening is, I will be on my computer, leave and turn my monitor off, and (randomly) when I come back to use my computer again, when I turn on the monitor there is no signal and a black screen (e.g. when I turn my monitor on my desktop will pop up and the light on my monitor will turn blue, when it doesn't turn on there will be a black screen and the light on the monitor stays yellow as if it is idle). I have tried swapping out the monitor to see if that was the issue and the same problem persists, so it does not appear to be my monitor or VGA cables.

The only way I can temporarily fix this issue is to reboot/restart my computer and viola! The monitor works again and I can see everything. This issue is very random. Sometimes I can go weeks without an incident, other times this is happening a couple times a week. I honestly don't know if it's my motherboard or video card or what. My PC isn't overheating, I'm not overclocking, and all of my drivers are updated.

I'm not sure what... Read more
