Win7 Explorer file Details tab missing?

Question: Win7 Explorer file Details tab missing?

Until recently, when using Windows Explorer, I was able to right click on an mp3 file, select properties, then the details tab and thus be able to see title, artist, album and other information. Now when I right click, I don't get the details tab (for any type file). What could have changed? Thanks

Preferred Solution: Win7 Explorer file Details tab missing?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Win7 Explorer file Details tab missing?

A Windows update may have changed the options for security or stability reasons. The effect may not have been their direct intention, but a result of 'fixing' something else. You can still get this information in Windows Media player (or what ever they are calling it these days) or in Real Player. You have to be a little bit crazy to keep you from going insane. This site is about helping people, lets keep it that way.

This started happening all of a sudden...when I right-click on an mp3 and look under the Details tab, all of the information (artist, album, bitrate, etc.) is completely blank and it doesn't let me change it. iTunes can see the details no problem.

Anyone know what's causing this? Thanks.

I have just setup a new pc with Windows 7 and have noticed a few "oddities" from what I'm used to with XP.

In XP, if I right-clicked on a filename in Windows Explorer, chose properties, then summary, I could add a description of the file that would show up on a file listing.

In Win7, when I right-click on the filename and choose "Properties", there is no means to add a description. This is particularly confusing since when I choose which columns to display in the Explorer screen, there are dozens of details listed that you can choose to display, including Title.

Does anyone know how I can add details such as Title to a file, either integrated in Win7 or a stand-alone utility?

Thanks.

Hi everyone. Is there a site that shows every possible windows explorer switch? I searched a lot of pages but they only show a few. I used be able in XP and vista , be able to open a folder in a details pane so it went to the end of the page instead of the top. ie, on my desktop ( I use classic view) I have a folder where I download everything first, click it on and it opens in explorer in a details view but I always have to scroll to the end of the page. I used to be able to append an end of page command to the explorer command line for this folder but I cannot remember it now. Thank you for your time.

Hello, I was wondering about the possibility to increase the images thumbnail size on the details pane in file explorer, and to make the panel maller than allowed by default. Is it possible?
Thank you for your help

Answer:adjust file preview size on file explorer details pane

There seems to be a minimum size which is pre-defined, you cannot make it smaller. The preview and details pane size is set by the DetailsContainerSizer binary value in the Registry key:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Modules\GlobalSettings\Sizer
I do not know of way to make the thumbnail larger in the details pane. It is larger in the preview pane.

When open WE, cant get 'In Folder' to show in 'details' bar as it does in Search Companion (srcnshot attached).
Seems to have disappeared after having some 'legacy' registry problems, working with Mbam.
Have tried doing an XP-SP2 repair (along with SP3 update) install, but not luck.
Thoughts ?

Sorry if this has been dealt with before - can't find it on a search.I am using XP with SP1.I want to create a spreadsheet listing the contents of various folders, mainly so I can identify gaps in downloaded series. Explorer gives me all the details I want, but I can't find a way to export all the information so it can be manipulated. So far I can only copy title information on one-by-one basis, and this is restricted to the file name. Ideally I would like to capture information about the entire contents of a folder, paste it into Excel, then sort by file size, creation date, etc. Is there an easy way to do this?

When I display a folder containing *.mpg video files and I switch to 'Details' view, file explorer crashes after a few moments. I've read online that this might be related to bad codecs on my machine. Is there a way to definitively test this or is there a trusted site where I can download an up-to-date set of comprehensive Codecs (with instructions on how to perform this Codec 'update')?

I'm running Windows 10 Pro, 64-bit and I use the VLC media player as my default program associated with video files.

Why are certain details, such as Frame Height, allowed in Windows Explorer when looking in a specific folder, but are missing when searching the contents of the same folder?

For example, I'm inside a folder (in details view) of video files and ask Explorer to show details of Frame Height. It will show that for certain file types. But when I search for one of the files by name, the Frame Height will be blank for the same file it just showed me the info for.

Answer:Windows Explorer won't show file details in search

It is generally accepted that the Windows 7 search is inadequate. Most here use AgentRansak, FileSearchEX, or Void Everything.

I'm all about equality and symmetry. I like making what's around me look good and consistent.

Is there a program that would let me measure exactly how wide a detail tab is, and that I can adjust the same measurement in a different folder?

So check out the image, for example. I have:
1) Name
2) Dimensions [this folder is primarily intended for images]
3) Size
4) Type
5) Date modified
Yet there's another folder that I also use that is also intended for images. So when I open that next folder, I want those detail tabs to be the same exact width in measurement, yet when I add the "Dimensions" detail, I have to manually adjust the size of the detail tab and try to make all the other tabs as close to how it looks in the other folder, so my eyes can stay on a consistent focus.

I'm sure these's some program out there that can automatically resize these things.

(PS: I'm aware of the setting that I can make a default for folders with images in them.. yet I don't want to do this the default settings for all pictures folders)

Okay thanks.

Hi, folks!

I'm trying hard to find at Internet a program or some way to output the informations from column details in Windows Explorer to a file (or to clipboard), cause I use different columns beside the normal information like filename, size, date, depending of the content of my folders. I.E. For a picture folder, I display dimensions of pics; for a mp3 folder, display bitrate and duration; for a video folder, display bitrate, duration and resolution (when available). I already tried a lot of programs, but none extract the informations the way I want (almost all of them just list the default columns, like filename, size and date) and I need a program that extract the columns exactly the way they are displayed in Windows Explorer. By the way, I'm using Windows XP Pro.

Thanks in advance.

Hi, I've had my music files for a long time, nothing has changed and I haven't done anything different in terms of music players.

The details for my music files (eg artist, song name etc) has disappeared in Windows Explorer but they show up in Winamp.
I am also unable to edit the file details. They're all mostly .mp3 files

Answer:Music file details disappeared in Windows Explorer

When you open windows explorer check option ?Views? and set it to ?Details? so you should be able to see file name, size, type, artist, Album title, year, track number and duration.
You can open windows media player, go to library and check if you can edit each file listed there.

I generally use the "details" view in Windows File Explorer a lot. This is an example:

As you can see, I can sort my file types in various ways by clicking on the different columns at the top. However, I have a question:

Is it possible to create a custom column in File Explorer that I can use to sort files by based upon their file extension? I'm not talking about changing the columns that are already there or picking from the huge list that you get when right click at the top and pick "More." What I want to do is create a custom column that I can enter text in for based upon the file extension which I can then use to sort my files into groups (such as audio, video, projects, etc.)

This could help me stay much more organized in File Explorer. However, you may be wondering why I don't just use the option to sort my files by "type" or "extension." The reason that I don't want to do this is because then not all of my files will be in the precise order that I want them to. Even though I found a way to modify the "Type" text for SOME files, as you can probably see in the image, I have not been able to for ALL file types (such as PNG, JPG, and JPEG), which is a real roadblock. This is because FileTypesMan is an old program and Registry Tweaks don't seem to be working even after I restart Windows Explorer.

Hello Everyone,

I don't exactly know the proper name for them, but I am looking for a way to TURN OFF / REMOVE the arrow drop down menus located to the right of each column when in the "details" view. When you click on the arrows they display a drop down menu giving you the option of filtering A-H, I- P, Q-Z which I am sure tons of people have a need for? I don't think so!

I am using the Windows 7 Basic Theme in Windows 7 Pro and as I said I am using the "Details" View.

I know many will brush off finding a fix to this, saying just ignore them, but they really are annoying, every time you go to change the size of a column (which I do quite a bit) when you go to select the line you get a little hiccup where it loads up this arrow menu icon. I compare this to buying a car and having the manufacturer designing the gas and the brake pedal to be butting up against each other, so that every time you go to hit one you are constantly hitting the other.

Others will say, "just pick a 3rd party file explorer", which after testing over 30 (don't get me started on file explorers ),
I have picked one and the best one that I have found that suits my own personal needs so far is QDir. It is a great file explorer and I am so grateful to the developer for creating it, (if you haven't tried it out, give it a shot) the only thing is I believe it uses the identical light blue columns from Windows 7 File Explorer because it has the same exact co... For Windows 7, is there a list of the 'Details' available in the Windows Explorer folder view called 'Details' which has an explanation for each of them? Most of them are simple but some leave me scratching my head.

Answer:explanation of 'Details' in Windows Explorer 'Details' view

The "Details" which are available are those you see when a list of files is in "Details" view (as opposed to "Icons" or "Tiles" views. In "Details" view, depending on which column categories you have enabled, you are shown such things as filesize, file-date, filetype etc. If you then right-click any column header, you can choose to hide or show more information columns.I can't see how any of that can leave you scratching your head as it's no different to previous versions of Windows in that respect.

Been grappling for some time to customizing the right pane of either Win7 or Win10 (not sure if they respond the same) to allow permanent column and column title arrangements. Ideally I would like to apply such attributes to a specific folder and all it's sub-folders. An example is below:
I would also love to be able to set these columns as fixed widths, but this is not as important as the specific columns themselves.

This is by far the most difficult issue to explain what I see. Whenever I point to some files in Windows Explorer or similar program a yellow "sticky note" displays with either the filename or occasionally a summary of the details of the file such as Date Modified, Size etc. I find it really annoying since it covers up an area such as other files etc.

I have tried "Disable Notification Area Balloon Tips in Windows XP" and "EnableBalloonTips" registry entry is already set to '0' plus I even recreated and still no go...still appears. Does not appear on every file but once in a while it will happen/

Attached is a basic sample where I pointed to a jpg.....

Any help to remove this pop is very much appreciated.

Hello, I am (as of this writing) using Windows 10 Preview Build 14390. My question has to do with customizing folders in File Explorer.

Is there a way to customize every folder/subfolder on my system (including external hard drives, USB flash drives, and CD/DVD) so that the Bit Rate type I?ve selected in the Sort By context menu is displayed in ?Display? Mode?

As of right now, it seems I have to add this option manually to each and every folder I use, one at a time.

If this is possible, what is the procedure? Also, if it is possible, will it work for new folders, as well? And will it work if I rename a folder?

The Bit Rate option need only appear in folders that contain audio files. Is there a way to restrict this option so that it doesn?t appear in every folder? (It?s not a big deal if it can?t.)

Using Autoruns, I was inspecting my startup files & noted that the rdpclip.exe file was enabled, but Autoruns told me that the file is missing. I have never consciously deleted said file & don't go around doing such things willy-nilly.

I would love to know under which directory it belongs & fm where / how I can get it back. Tried the Recycle bin already, to no avail.... using Win7 x64 Home Premium... any way I can extract the file fm some sort of cabinet?

You should find it in C:\Windows\System32, there's an rdpclip.exe and rdpclip.exe.mui file. A system restore might put you back to where it was if you can't find it.

Hi,

I recently uninstalled iZArc 3.81 and after doing so I no longer get the nice looking "soft" theme on file and folder context menu. It now looks like a Win2000 styled menu.

If I go into a folder and click somewhere in the empty space, then the context menu looks fine, but do it on a folder or file and it just looks ugly!

Has anyone else had a similar problem? I have posed on the iZArc forums, but I am not sure if it's a software or Windows 7 issue.

Can anybody help?

Kind Regards

sid, Welcome to the Windows 7 Forums!

I am not sure if this is what you mean, but you can try this:

Open explorer, choose Organize (upper left), then choose Folder and search options, choose view tab.

Select Restore Defaults.

I hope this works for you!

I am a LONG time xp user who has switched my netbook over to win7. All I can say is ACK. File explorer really doesn't appear to want to show me all the files in a folder nor will it show me the extensions.

Please tell me there are hidden options to make it show me everything and stop trying to protect me from myself.

I didn't exactly use the prescribed method for installing win7 as I just cloned my netbook hd onto an ssd and then installed win7 32bit as an update. I need to move some files from the hd to the ssd and they don't even show up in explorer. Hell, these files may be in windows_old, but they're just not showing up.

Help?

Hi,

OS: Win7 64bits Family

To add a vbscript or bat file to
Win7 Explorer right click menu, ones does the following:

Within Explorer:
1. type "shell:sendto"
into the address bar
2. drop the vbs, bat file

Now, in Explorer one selects any
file and by right clicking on it, under "send to" one has our vbs or bat files. Great, but how to achieve this with hta files????

Thanks

P.S. I would also be happy on selecting
a specify file type, for instance *.mp4, to have some kind of "open with" selection with my hta file.
However a simple HTA
having
<body onload="vbscript:vbsSayHello()">
with

sub vbsSayHello MsgBox "Hy"End Sub
Directly promps an error: filename.mp4 is not a valid win32 app

Hi, I am fixing a friends computer for him and he had a network worm that deleted his explorer.exe file or atleast ever time I try to run explorer.exe it always comes up with nothing. I was wondering if anybody had a copy of this file or knew where I can get a copy of it? His OS is XP Pro SP3. I am running Win 7 and I was not sure if mine would work? Thanks.

Answer:Missing Explorer.exe file

Welcome to TSF!

I'm moved this to your own thread. you should always start your own thread, even if your issue is similar, as it can quickly get confusing trying to help more than one person in a thread.

The explorer.exe file from Win 7 won't work.
Check in C:\WINDOWS\ServicePackFiles\i386 to see if there is a copy.
You can extract a copy from the XP CD on any Windows system using this command from the Command Prompt, which will place it on the desktop (X is the CDRom drive letter):
Expand -R X:\i386\explorer.ex_ "%Userprofile%\Desktop
You can then copy it to the affected system. If using the Recovery Console (RC), the file will have to be on a floppy or CD, the RC doesn't support USB devices.

To use the Recovery Console to extract the file:
To boot into the XP Recovery Console:
You may need to enter the BIOS and make sure the CD is set as the first boot device, or you might have a Boot Menu you can access with a key press when you start the PC. F12 is common.
When you boot from the CD, the following is displayed:
Press any key to boot from CD....
Press any key so it will boot from the CD.
Next on a black screen:
Setup is inspecting your computer's hardware configuration...
Screen turns Blue, and Windows Setup is displayed at the top.
at the bottom is displayed the following in sequence:
Press F6 if you need to install a third party SCSI or RAID driver
Press F2 to run Automated System Recovery (ASR)...
Setup is loading files (file names displayed... Read more

When I open file explorer (Open/Save dialog or insert image dialog) in Excel - it doesn't include search tab, but when similar dialogs are opened in other Office application there is search tab.

Also xlsx files have wrong excel icon - it is showing windows excel component 2010 icon.

Window Search is enabled and ticked.

What could be wrong?

You could try repairing Office. Open Control Panel, select Programs & Features, scroll down to Microsoft Office, Right Click on it & this will open a couple of Repair options.

I'm trying to burn an audio CD yet the application doesn't recognise any CD drive. Checking further, the CD drive is not listed in File Explorer until a CD media is inserted that holds valid data. The drive disappears when the media is ejected.
Under view options, the box is unticked for "hide empty drives".
Under device manager the drive shows as present and working normally.
I have tried switching autoplay on and off with no effect (suggested as a fix elsewhere).
Any ideas?

Hi, reported a number of times in the forum.

Just search in the box above
DVD drive missing
CD drive not recognized
etc to see how often

Try:
Run Command Prompt as an Administrator. (Windows key + X, click Command Prompt (admin) )

2. Copy/type the following and enter

reg.exe add "HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\atapi\Controller0" /f /v EnumDevice1 /t REG_DWORD /d 0x00000001

3. Reboot the system

My DVD drive was then automatically recognised. Yippee.

I don't know how long it's been missing, if it ever was there, but I thought it would be handy to have File Explorer on the Task Bar.

I found it on the Applications page of the start menu, right clicked on it, and saw that File Explorer was already pinned to the task bar. I tried unpinning it, then repinning it, but is just doesn't show up.

Any ideas?

Answer:File Explorer is missing from the taskbar

You could open the file location & right click it & send to desktop as a shortcut.

Then drag & drop it on the taskbar.

Or open it & right click the taskbar icon & choose pin to taskbar.

I'm Steve and I will be helping you thoughout this fix.

Before beginning the fix, read this post completely. If there's anything that you do not understand, kindly ask your questions before proceeding. It is IMPORTANT that you don't miss a step. Please perform everything in the correct order/sequence.

Please Subscribe to this Thread to get immediate notification of replies as soon as they are posted. To do this click Thread Tools, then click Subscribe to this Thread. Make sure it is set to Instant notification by email, then click Add Subscription

Please note that the forum is very busy and if I don't hear from you within three days from this initial posting then the thread will be closed.

From looking at your log I see a few issues which need attention. I do notice that you have 2 anti virus applications running, although this may seem like a sound idea to double your protection, you are actually putting your system at risk from conflicts and slowdowns as they fight for superiority. I would choose from just one from what you are running and uninstall the other.

We will begin with ComboFix.exe. Please visit this webpage for download links, and instructions for running the tool:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/comb...o-use-combofix

* Ensure you have disabled all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next rep... Read more

Hi all,

I have been searching the web for an answer to this question since first getting Windows 10 last year. I would like my File Explorer to open using the "List" view rather than the current default of "Details". I have seen many responses that reference how to change the default view template from Documents to Music, Pictures, ..., but none that actually address this question. Is there a way to do this at all in Win10?

I'm thinking of changing Documents template for Details to remove all columns except for Name. The Details view as it currently has been useful in the past so I hate to lose it all together.

Am I SOL in my request? Thanks in advance.

Answer:Want to change File Explorer default View from "Details" to "List"

Open File Explorer, in the menu bar click view > choose your view (mine is medium icons)

To get the menu bar (if you don't have it showing) put the cursor in the top window bar, right click, click Menu bar. On mine it's the first choice.

Hi all,

I'm using Windows 10 ver. 1703. Since the last major update, the file explorer shows a blank icon for many file types instead of the associated application (such as Adobe Acrobat, Excel, Word etc.). The files are still associated correctly and re-associating them didn't solve the problem. I also deleted the icon cache and let Windows rebuild it, but that didn't help either.

Does anybody have an idea?

Answer:Missing file type icons in Explorer

Hi berliner77. Welcome to the TenForums @berliner77

Could be a wild guess solution. Try going in the Apps box in Settings. Then defaults apps and at the bottom of the Right hand side "Set defaults by app". Try setting one to be the default, say Adobe, allow it to take all the extensions associated to Adobe.

Now I saw your comment that the defaults are associating correctly. My wild guess is that by using this process it will reassign the proper icon.

I am new to windows 8. I was recently looking at files using file explorer. I moved it to the right side of screen hoping to keep it there to look at other desk top items. In previous versions of window you could move the file explorer to right side and it would stay there and you could open other files. When I moved it to the right side it disappeared off screen and now I can not view anything that uses file explorer. The file explorer icon on the task bar is still present and when you place the mouse over it you can see the opened files but I am unable to expand it to view. I can close the files here and I tried to reopen but it is still out of view. I have tried restarting the system, but I have had no results. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Answer:file explorer missing after moving to right side of screen

After opening the first instance of file explorer, you could try right clicking the taskbar icon and open a second instance, then use the thumbnails and find which one is your first instance(may take a couple tries) and close it, then right click on the top window frame and close the second instance using the right click menu. Then see if you can open it in the normal place after.

hi, i've had a search about and havn't found anything to do with the temp file missing from my laptop. when i boot up i get this error message:

'rundll

error in C:\Users\Chris\Appdata\Local\Temp\kbxoxwqo.dll

missing entry:run'

it's causing my computer to refresh my desktop whenever i try to open any explorer window; 'my documents', 'my computer', 'recycle bin', etc

there doesn't seem to be any virus' or trojans etc, any help would be appreciated

Answer:missing temp file, windows explorer problems

Rundll.exe is a command-line utilities included with Windows operating systems to invoke functions exported from DLLs.This error may occur if the primary hard drive or boot partition has been changed/upgraded/replaced and software from the hard drive has been used to move the data from the old to the new drive.

Often you can locate the Run Dll in the exe services. You can open up your services configuration by following instructions below:

1. Open your Start menu.
2. Click Run
3. In the command screen type:services.msc
4. This will bring up the Services Management window. If you drag the mouse to one of the services. It will give you a detailed explanation of the service in question. By right clicking the individual service.
5. Stop the "dll"service immediately.

*Sometimes the dll process can not be stopped by this method

You will have to open your Windows Registry File System. This is an extremely delicate process. You may want to use a good registry cleaner This will often fix the dll error in question, eliminate other errors and also speed up your computer.

I am posting this here under General Discussion since it is so spooky as to almost be a Twilight Zone thing.

We have a 3-computer local/home network with all dynamic data stored on a network drive. We use File Explorer frequently. Six or seven times since upgrading to W10, folders have gone missing. After each event, I have caught/found the missing folders in other locations in the directory tree. The network has not changed since 2008 and the problem never occurred with WXP, Vista, or W7, all using Windows Explorer, of course.

I have been blaming my wife for sloppy mouse-work (ya gotta blame someone) but she obviously hadn't done this kind of thing for 7 years. Last night I looked in a sub-folder for a particular file. Ten minutes later, I looked for it again and the folder was missing. I did a search and it was now located as a sub-folder in another sub-folder. They have never been gone, only moved in the tree.

I sure would like to know if anyone else has experienced this.

(I did a search for File Explorer but there are so many pages of hits I just caved and did this post. The hits for "missing folders", "folders moved", etc., produced nothing similar. Please let me know if there is a relevant thread that I have just missed.)

Hi, title says it all. I'm having problems with my computer CD/DvD drive where its not shown in File Explorer As (D: ) or even shown in Device Manager. I have tried inserting a disk and ejecting it out and it works fine. However the drive is just missing from the computer.

Laptop: Sony Vaio S Series

I have tried most of the fixes I have found on google and on the forums such as registry editing, uninstalling IDE ATA Controllers. Also, I found out that in my IDE ATA Controllers section, unlike others who have ATA Channel, mine doesnt shows that and instead only display - intel 7 series chipset family sata ahci controller.
Only found out today that my disk drive was missing as i wanted to listen to a cd on my laptop.

Anyone has any ideas? Thanks!

Answer:CD/DVD Drive Missing in File Explorer And Device Manager.

Hi, as I recall some many months ago it was the case the drive would not be shown unless an optical medium was present. That changed (for me at least) so it's always shown.

You could try this free cautious tool:

My first post here. I searched here but could not find an answer, maybe someone can shed some light on this. I am trying to help an elderly friend who has run into a problem that neither of us can solve. I consider myself pretty savvy on computers, but this one has me stumped.

He called and said he could no longer delete unwanted files. I stepped though the normal steps of finding the file, right clicking on it, move down context menu, and then select Delete. However, here lies the problem. He has no Delete to select, nor does he have a Cut to select. I even had him try to select the file and use the "Red X" at the top menu bar, however, when he selects a file, the top menu bar switches from the Home to the File tab. When he selects the Home tab, the files he selected gets de-selected.

Hope I made this clearer than mud...sure could use some options to try.

Thanks

Answer:Delete and Cut missing from File Explorer Context Menu

Hi, as no-one's thought of a brilliant answer yet, here's what I'd do. Losing these is- unusual.

Sure you could (eventually) import the relevant section of the registry from a working PC, if you could find it, but that's not trivial and if you have a problem like this, sthg else has probably been corrupted

So try a very good repair technique, one of the best features of Win 10 (I think):
Repair Install Windows 10 with an In-place Upgrade - Windows 10 Forums

This
- keeps all your programs and most settings
- creates Windows.old
- can take a long time, depending on your hardware (it's virtually a Windows installation)
- turns off system restore
- means you have to redo Win updates from November (perhaps total 3 or so)
- may mean you have to set up or Wifi connection again (if you have Wifi)

It's very useful to keep a bootable version of Win 10 for this and other reasons.

I recommend for safety that you create a disk image of what you have now BEFORE doing this, and maintain your disk image thereafter so you can quickly restore your PC to a working state without technical help.

E.g. Macrium Reflect (free) + its boot medium + large enough external storage.

Good luck.

This month the 'details view' in windows explorer randomly changes to big non-discript icons. It undoes the general purpose and apply to subfolders on some, seemingly the most used folders.
This is really annoying. anyway to regedit this permanently for all?

if that is not available, go to Start/Search and type CMD right click the CMD icon in the search results and Run As Administrator. In the Elevated Command Prompt type SFC /scannow and press enter. This will replace any missing system files.

Hopefully someone can help.

I've found repeatedly (across four separate installations) that in Windows 10 the Folders and files I have Pinned in Quick Access disappear from the Submenu in Start after a while (see screenshot).

I've tried everything I can think of; from Unpinning everything and Repinning it, taking-out and replacing the File Explorer link, changing the function to launch Quick Access - and in every combination as well as Reset & Clear.

I have several Folders and stacks of Recent Files visible in Quick Access, and ideally would like to avoid just blitzing my User Profile or Installation yet again. Does anyone have any insight?

Hi,

I had a problem where my system32 folder was not showing in windows epxplorer. I could not figure out why. I could access it directly by typing in c:\windows\system32 and I could acces it through my command promt, but it simply was not showing in explorer under my windows folder nor was my search function finding it. But my computer was working just fine as far as I could see.

I could not find the solution here on the forums so I checked elsewhere and found the solution to having it display again. So, if you are having this same problem, here is the solution...

Simple, just go to your command promt and type in...

attrib -a -h -r -s c:\windows\system32 (and of course hit enter)

The problem should be solved and your system32 folder should now be showing up once again. Worked for me!

However, I cannot say why this even happened in the first place or how the above command fixes the problem. Perhaps someone else can clarify all this.

And BTW, I was not hiding system hidden folders and files so that was not the reason.

Anyway, I love this forum and I thought it would be a good idea to post this here in hopes that it might help someone else with the same problem.

"ntoskrnl.exe"!KeAcquireInStackQueuedSpinLockAtDcpLevel+0x1e0".

^^ This right there is my problem. Here are screen shots of my problem may one of the experts please help me because my other thread is useless please remove it This is day 2 and no one knows the fix to this?
I found this post on another site but did not understand what he did to fix the issue does anybody know any light to this issue?

FIGURED IT OUT!!

There was a driver from "New Software, Inc." for a product called "Folder-Lock", which is used to be able to assign a password to access windows folders, that was getting invoked by the Win7 System Kernel. I uninstalled this product, and presto, problem gone - no more 50% of CPU being used by system - - -

How I Did It::

I couldn't find any software or features within "Xperf", "Windows Process Monitor", or "Windows Process Explorer" that allowed me to "map" the offending Thread ID to the responsible driver. However, Windows Process Explorer does display info for all the Drivers being loaded/invoked for a given process - including the "System" kernel process.

So I just went and slowly browsed thru all 173 of them, and thought about what non-Microsoft drivers might possibly have something to do with locking up resources - a clue given to me by the Starting Address for the offending TID from Process Explorer:

When I do a search on how to sort, I get a Tutorial that tells me to open the "View" Menu item.

However, as you can see from the attached, I don't have a VIEW menu on my Folder.

I would like to sort these by file type so that I can save them to a CD.

What am I doing wrong here?

Answer:I can't sort by File Types. What happened to File Details?

I attached a word doc with two pics in it. I have no idea wht these [IMG] links are.
I hit the paperclip, added my file from my C: drive, hit Upload, and got this.

Essentially, I created a new folder, put in some music files, and wanted to sort them by file type, but I have no option for that. I can only sort by List, Details, Tiles and Content.

Under Windows XP, I COULD sort using View/Details.

The Links details on my IE7 Toolbar have suddenly gone missing. The word Links is still on the left hand side of the space for the toolbar but it is completely inactive when I click on it or anywhere else in the bar area. Neither can I drag URLs to this area. Under Tools the Link option is ticked & Lock the Toolbars is unticked. Does anyone have any ideas on how this has happened & how it can be rectified?

Answer:Link details missing

If Lock Toolbars isn't ticked then you should have a faint vertical line to the left of the word Links. If you hover your cursor over this it should change to a double headed arrow and you should then be able to drag the links area out or move it onto another toolbar.

Answer:Details tab missing in properties!

You may want to carry out a virus scan, for which Malwarebytes is eminently suitable: Malwarebytes : Malwarebytes Anti-Malware PRO removes malware including viruses, spyware, worms and trojans, plus it protects your computer

Your user account may be corrupted so you could try creating a new account to see whether that has the same problem.

So, basically.. I know exactly what is happening here, but I don't know how to fix it. This was something changed in an earlier update that I've been putting up with for a few months now.

I tend to use longer names for my drives to keep things organized and looking nice. It used to be that if a name was too long it would truncate the name in file explorers tile view, basically the end of it would fade away behind the drive letter. What it does now, is it puts the rest of the name and/or the drive letter on a second line, moves the bar indicating disk usage down a line, and completely removes the actual digital readout of drive space. If I shorten the name it returns the readout, but I would prefer not to have to do that. Does anyone know a way to make this return to its old behavior?

For what it's worth, I AM on the Insider Preview builds (16299.19 currently) but seeing as its been doing this for some months now, I believe it would do this on an up to date consumer build as well.

Here is a screenshot if you can't quite understand what I'm describing.

Originally when XP installed, for pictures, when File\Properties was selected the pane had two tabs: 'General' and 'Summary'. Now only the General tab shows in the pane. The Summary could then be expanded to 'Advanced' which showed all the meta data for the picture, i.e. details of the camera, exposure, f number, etc. This was very useful. The change may have occured when I included a Windows update. I have included all the Windows updates available for XP from the Microsoft site. Why is this second tab 'Summary' not now available? Any ideas or suggestions most welcome.

Hey all, new to the board and I've got a little (annoying) issue with windows explorer.

My mp3's no longer display the Artist, Album, Duration fields when windows explorer is set to list in "detail" mode. now the proper columns are selected however they are all blank.

Checking the "properties" of the mp3 files don't have any info in the summary section however entering anything in there.... doesn't change things. The columns are still left blank.

Winamp, windows media and every other media player I use displays all the track information correctly including album title and artist.

I have a whole bunch o' mp3's and previously they would all show this detailed information when being viewed in windows explorer. I've copied some to a memory stick and taken them to another computer, the details were displayed correctly as they should. So i'm thinking I may have set a securiity meassure or something but I can't figure out what I did.

The issue has been happening for the last year or so but now that I'm trying to organize my library i'm missing this feature.

Anyone have any ideas how to fix it?

XP SP2 is my OS.

Answer:MP3 Details in Explorer

Hi there...

Have you at any time had trouble accessing avi files in Explorer and had to run the following command:

regsvr32 u/shmedia.dll

???

If yes, that may be the cause of the problem, you can reverse it by clicking Start -> Run -> type:
regsvr32 shmedia.dll
Click OK

However, this is likely to cause you Explorer crashes with .avi files again.

If the above doesn't apply, it may be worthwhile trying the command then rebooting to see if it helps :)

I am wondering if there is a way to enable the Status Bar at the bottom of the Explorer window to give the details when selecting more than 15 items in a folder? It works great up to 15 items, but I am often selecting more than 15 items...

This was something I came to rely on in XP and am disappointed to see it gone from W7. Is there a 'switch' somewhere that I haven't been able to locate?

Thanks in advance.

I have this problem with the vista details pane and I have not been able to find any solution. I have Windows Vista 32 bit Home Premium version. The problem is that:
1. My details pane is missing a lot of properties/tags . Only ones that are appearing are file date, file name, dated created.
2. When I go into a MP3 folder, same thing happens as I described in 1. Just the 4 tags appear and I don?t get any other tags that used to be there like artist name, rating, title, etc.
3. I cannot edit any Tag in the details pane. When everthing was working fine, I could go in the MP3 folder , I could edit the title, ratings etc. and Save it. But now I can?t do anything, the save button does not appear and the tags don?t go in edit mode.
Up till now I have tried the following solutions:
1. I have reset all the folder options in Vista by going to Folders/tools/reset defaults. (did not work)
2. After resetting the folders, I have also turned on the details pane option under Organize/Layout and the details under the Views. (did not work)
3. Under View, in the tool bar, I went to Customize This Folder and chose the Music Folder Option, All Items etc. (did not work)
4. Then on the Microsoft site, I found this solution ? Open Documents by clicking the Start button , and then clicking Documents., and click a file to apply properties. Then In the Details pane at the bottom of the folder window, click the property that you want to change, type the new property in the Tags.? But it did not work ei... Read more

hello

You said "when everything was working fine" what happened? did you download a new program? (itunes, vlc)

Did you use a "registry cleaner" or an "optimizer"?

On the properties window, general tab, what is it set to "open with"?

Has anyone tried to (or found a third party app) that can put the details pane back to the bottom of the File Explorer windows, like it was in 7. It was of great use to me when reading tags and other information. In 8, it just takes needless width space from the windows.

I have a Lumia Icon and vcards sent to me via text do not come through with all of the contact info that is sent. I've had several iphone users that I know try it and some info comes through but not all. Typically email addresses and street addresses don't come through. Why doesn't this work and will the WP 8.1 /Denim update fix it? I run a business and I need this functionality to work correctly. It's embarrassing to ask someone to email a contact because my phone can't recognize it. I love Windows Phone, but my business can't suffer because of it. Anyone else have this issue? I must be searching for the wrong thing - I can't find a solution to this simple problem.

In Windows 10, if I open a folder which has mp3s or WAVs in it, Windows decides I want to see things like "title", "contributing artists", "album" etc... It drives me mental. All I ever want to see in an explorer window is file type, file size and created and modified dates.

I can't believe this isn't easy to set, but I can't find it. Please help - I work in music and every time I export an audio file I have to spend 10 seconds changing the view in the blinking folder to make sure what I need is there.

With Windows 8, Windows Explorer's status bar has taken a major step back. From Windows 95 to Windows XP - Explorer has had this very useful STATUS BAR that displayed very useful information at a glance.

In Windows Vista, two features were removed:
 - Total size of ALL files
in a folder on the status bar without selecting them all, then excluding folders
 - Tooltip information of single selected file

Classic Shell fixed that.

In Windows 7, again three features were removed:
 - Free disk space on any volume at the current location
-  Computer zone
-  Total size of selected files
(not total size of all files, but selected files)

Classic Shell fixed it again.

In Windows 8, again these features are removed and the only feature left now is total number of items, items selected and size of selected items (but only up to 99 files)

I was told this info was removed for performance reasons because calculating size is computationally intensive or some bullshit reason like this but that is unacceptable.
Having the status bar show this info from Windows 95 to Windows XP didn't make these Windows versions unacceptably slow or unusable, this is a feature power users need all the time. At most,
Microsoft should just disable this info by default but not take it out.

This is the status bar from Windows 7 with Classic Shell installed. (It can fix all of status bar issues on Window... Read more
