My Money 98 has also worked with win7 64 bit,

Question: My Money 98 has also worked with win7 64 bit,

My money98 is suddenly giving me issues on my P/Bell. It has worked on my 64 bit system no hassle. Suddenly in Feb 2011 when I press "investments" the headings start disappearing, then program locks up. Reinstalled money98 with back up from july 2010. Posted all my lost work no problem. The moment I try post Feb 2011 work it bombs again. Any suggestions. I Have checked for virus but found nothing

Preferred Solution: My Money 98 has also worked with win7 64 bit,

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: My Money 98 has also worked with win7 64 bit,

One of two problems come to mind here. One is that the program is so old that it's Y2K patch that was made to the '95 version (probably not completely rewritten) was never intended to make it work for more than an additional 10 years over the 'year 2000' conflict. They may have arbitrarily said that another 10 years should more than be enough and programed into it that any date before Feb. year 11 (otherwise taken as 1911) was to be considered as after Dec. year 99 (1999) and you just reached that limit. The second possible thing is that a recent Windows 7 update has made the program's access to system components more restricted and is causing the problem. If the second one is the cause, running it in compatibility mode may help, if it is the first one, nothing will really help and you may have to finally purchase a replacement program. You may also want to Google around for others still are trying to run the same combination and are having similar problems. You have to be a little bit crazy to keep you from going insane.

Hello

In outline I think this question is, how do I upgrade from XP to Win7 without permissions problems?

I would like to think that I am a reasonably sophisticated PC user but have experience with Windows 3, 95, NT, 2000 and XP. I am having a significant number of problems with Windows 7 and I think they are mostly permissions related. I upgraded a laptop to Windows 7 but it had a large number of licensed applications on the previous windows XP load and so I created a dual boot because I did not have confidence in the Windows 7 virtual XP machine. This scepticism seems to be valid as already it seems that Nero, Matlab, Dragon, and Acronis are not Windows 7 compatible.

The problem I would like to solve is that many windows functions do not seem to work in Windows 7. For example, adding or deleting folders to libraries works only until the machine is restarted. Programmes hang frequently for a few seconds as if they are accessing online resources. UAC requests access for most programmes and many files.

I have taken ownership of all the data files imported from the XP load. If I take ownership of the XP profiles then XP fails to start. The Win7 profiles were created at the time of Win7 install, but although the accounts have administrative privileges it seems that the win7 practice of demoting users means that basic functions fail to work. A specific example follows:

Within Windows picture viewer there is an option on right click to set as desktop background. The... Read more

Answer:Windows functions that worked in XP fail in Win7 - permissions?

I turn UAC all the way down. Also since I only have one account other than the built in Admin account, I used the Take Ownership context menu utility(see Tutorials section) to take ownership of the entire Program Files folder. Now and then a program is a stickler so I run it in compatibility mode or As Administrator. But you should not need to do that with most.

First thing I would try is move the UAC slider all the way to Never Notify.

A few really touchy programs you may have to install using compatibility mode. But for the most part I was able to use the utilities I've been using for years under W7.

Hi!

OK, so here's what's happening: My HDD died. Then, 3 months later, a NEW HDD died. (Awesome.) So, I got a newer. better HDD, had a repair shop check my PC, ensure that the motherboard wasn't causing the HDD errors (it wasn't). Then they loaded the OS from their own disks. From day 1 Windows updates would NOT work, I couldn't even get SP1. Over a course of 3 weeks, I tried about 8 different fixes. Nothing. So, I started from scratch.

This time I loaded the OS. I have a 2010 Dell XPS1645. I loaded the OS using my original Dell disks. It's Win7 Home Premium. X64 btw.

I followed the driver DL order on Dell's site.

Updates were working great and then they stopped.

So, per your site's instructions I ran the SURT tool. After 3 hours of it hanging, I closed it using Task Manager.

I ran the SFC scan, and, yes, I did receive the "did not find any integrity violations" message.

I have not gotten any Windows Update error codes from Windows. I do get the red X shield on the Windows Update pop-up, but when I click Check for Updates, it seems to try -- but it just hangs.
I've attached a zip which includes:
My SFC/scannow results.
My Windows Logs folder.
AND I included a screen cap of what Window updates worked; you can see which was the first one to fail.

I did try DL'ing one of those updates manually and running it. Honestly, I'm so burned out by all of this (see first paragraph above), I can't recall what happened, but suffice it to say, it didn't ... Read more

I have been using MS Money 2006 on my Win7 Home Premium based system for several years with no problems. I left the system to auto install the latest updates (18) from Microsoft, which the computer did, then shut down. I booted the computer up today, and after the usual screen telling me it was configuring updates, it opened Windows with no apparent problems. However, when I tried to open Money 2006 I found the program was opening, displaying the welcome screen then immediately shutting down again leaving me unable to access my data. I have tried re-installing the program but this problem persists. The only help I have found from Microsoft was a registry edit which didn't work and several work arounds which told me to firstly 'Open the program'. which is the one thing I cannot do.
All and any suggestions or advice welcomed gratefully.

Windows continually attempts to install MS Money 2002 any time I navigate via Windows Explorer or Internet Explorer. I saw an earlier thread where the same thing happened upon startup but that's not happening with me. I already have MS Money 2002 installed and it's been working fine until 2 January, when the MS Money folder was modified - albeit not by me. I ran a recent version of Norton Anti-Virus & some Spyware programs, but nothing was found.

Would appreciate any help.

Used by Microsoft Money as a user name and password for security with data files. An online service that enables you to use your e-mail address and a single password to sign into any service or website on the Passport Network. Microsoft Money uses Passport to upload account data to the MSN Money site so users can access investment data online. Beginning with Microsoft Money 2006, Passport accounts are required to share data files efficiently between two computers. Reinstalling Money will result in requiring a password. (Hotmail/Windows Live Email address and password)
The Passport Network is necessary to sign in to MSN Messenger, MSN Hotmail, MSN Music, and other sites. Visit the Passport Network to sign up or investigate further.

Guys, can someone help me out on trying to resolve an issue I'm having on my network.

I have 3 Main PCs.

One in the Gameroom--Media Server (Windows 7 64bit, onboard Gigabit Nic). MSI AMD 780G Chipset.

One in the Office--(Windows XP MCE, INTEL Gigabit PCI)

One in the Living Room--HTPC (Windows 7 32bit, onboard Gigabit Nic) GIGABYTE AMD 780G Chipset.

I just upgraded all my systems to new hard drives in hopes of archiving all DVDs onto the server and streaming them from there to the other machines.

All connections are working fine and I can move around files between machines no problem.

My issues I can get 70-80 MB/s between the HTPC and the Server.

The most I can get out of my Office and the Server is 37-40MB/s.

The 2 OS drives in the Office and HTPC machines are Identical..Samsung F3 drives. The drives on the server I'm sending files to are Samsung F4 drives.

I just did fresh OS intalls on these drives when I placed them into service.

I used all windows drivers except for the Intel NIC in which I used the supplied drivers for it.

Can anyone tell me why my XP machine can't pull the same mustard as the other machine? It really has me puzzled.

Thanks,
Mike

I have two 1GB sticks of RAM: DDR 333, FDMHGO-04032T This RAM worked fine in a T30 2366-85U laptopI put the same RAM in a T30 2366-KU1 laptop and it doesn't work - in either memory slot. The BIOS is 1IET71WW (2.10 ) 06/16/2006, which is I believe the latest BIOS for this laptop. The 2366-85U laptop no longer works, I dropped something on the keyboard and that killed the laptop, so I can't check it for BIOS version. Is there something I can do to get the two 1gb sticks of RAM working in the 2366-KU1 laptop? Not sure if RAM can be damaged, but could it have been damaged when the other laptop died?

Okay this one has some history to it....

I've never EVER been able to get 5.1 sound to work with windows and any game that supposedly supports EAX and/or 5.1 sound. This is over two different 5.1 Creative Sound Blaster cards (Live! 5.1 and Audigy LS), always with winXP and games like CS, HL2, or ANY newer game supporting 5.1.

My current configuration:
AMD 3200+
ASUS A7N8X-E Motherboard
1GB of RAM
SBlaster Audigy LS - 5.21.1.255 driver dated 2/4/2003
Logitech's THX 5.1 theatre sound w/ FR, FL, RR, RL, C, and Bass box speakers
ATI Radeon X800 XT video
Windows XP SP2
Speakers set to 5.1 speakers in Control Panel

The problem manifests in numerous ways:

In a game like Half Life 2, with speakers set to 5.1 in windows, and 5.1 and EAX enabled in HL2's options, I get Absolutely NO sound whatsoever. Adjusting the speakers to "2 speakers" in windows control panel gets me audio, but not 5.1.

In Fable: The Lost Chapters, and the speakers set to 5.1, the sound still only comes out of the front two speakers, and actions in game make it LOOK like it's working as if its 5.1 (turn away from a character who's talking and it fades from the front speakers), but NOTHING plays out of the C, RR, and RL speakers. This means if I turn my back on a talking character, the volume of the voice in the front two speakers drops to nothing (assuming its trying to turn up the voice volume in the rear speakers) but I hear nothing since those speakers a... awesome.... my windows xp has finally stopped those annoying pop ups. thanks guys. but i have heard that xp likes to use the disabled messenger program for other things. will this be a problem?

Answer:worked!

Disabling the service is a bad way to solve the problem. The problem is your network is receiving data (messanger pop-ups)that your don't want. The symptom is the pop-up. You have removed the symptom, but not the problem. To remove the problem you should be blocking the traffic at your firewall. Since your not I'm betting you don't have a firewall, yes?

Question: This worked!!

SP3 was an automatic update from microsoft. I thought well if it's from Microsoft, no harm , no foul. Boy was I wrong. I read about it here on the forum first and it looked as if I had all the bases covered so I went ahead. It installed with no problems. I went through some programs and tho the computer seemed a bit slow, I was going to give sp3 a chance. Then I went online. It seemed that I had hooked into ad central. You name it, someone wanted to sell it to me. Pop-ups galore!! I fought malware for 3 days with Ad-Aware, spybot, McAfee, Max registry cleaner and spyware cleanser from Comcast. I ended up with my registry screwed, Windows XP in shambles and me afraid to try the forum because I didn't want to go online. Just as I was going to come crying to the forum thru another computer I ran across a website called the bleeping computer that said "We got the answer!" I said to myself "How many times....?" But I tried it anyway (after reading the entire site) and you know what? It worked!! My computer is completely back to normal! I had BIG problems as I had MS Antivirus pop-ups everywhere and when I had un-installed sp3 and used a registry cleaner it took half of Win-xp with it including the half the icons under "START" (like, run-help and support-conputer-my docs-ect). Windows genuine notification icon kept winking at me but on the site it wouldn't verify the genuiness of the software because so much was deleted or changed from the original ins... Read more

Answer:This worked!!

You can tell windows to ignore specific updates, that way it won't get SP3 but will continue to get other updates as they become available.

I recommend setting your automatic updates to notify you when they are ready to be downloaded or installed. That way you can see what it is trying to install instead of giving it the ability to install whatever, whenever.

Then later that day and into the next the new modem wouldn't ever let me connect after many reboots etc. So I call back them and after over an hour of do this and do that I replugged in the old modem and it at least worked so then the guy told me to try plugging the new modem with the old cat cable. that worked once but then it would never work again, and tried all the methods on the laptop which is no surprise that it wont work. I just completed the Read and Run and Windows XP cleanup. I have been dealing with a windows security alert pop-up for months. As soon as the desk top loads, I get one of three balloons with one of the following warnings:
1) Automatic Update is nit turned on, click here to turn on:
2) Norton Auto protect is not enabled, click to enable
3) your system is infected, click here to activate windows security center

At one point someone clicked the balloon, and this has pledged me ever since. Every time i think I got rid of it, it returns, so this time I want to know its gone. The other issue I am experiencing is that windows explorer crashes when I attempt to explore. i am not sure this is connected, but in case it is I am mentioning it. I am also experiencing an extremely long boot time from when windows xp splash screen comes up, to when the desktop actually loads. It can take up to 10 minutes sometime. Then it takes another 5-7 minutes before I can open a program. I am attaching the logs from my scans, and and looking forward to any input.

Question: Worked for a sec.

Built a computer, installed a new mother board and cpu. I connected all of the wires to the mother board and other componets. turned on the power supply by pluging it in. The green led light was on. Try turning it on and got nothin! Checked the jumpers and switch connectors. They were all fine. Desside to change out power supplies and it worked fine with the power supply out of the computer. Then turned it off. Installed the power supply in side of the computer and then nothing. The only thing I could get was the green led light to come on. Took out te power supply and placed it in another computer and now it doessn't work in that one either. I figure my computer is killing power supplys and one have any idea's. Thanks Andre

Answer:Worked for a sec.

I think there are 2 likely posibilities

1.You overloaded your powersupply. This is common many people use powersupplies (PSUs) that don't have enough power to run their system. Post the specs of the system as well as the full specs on the PSU amps and watts also post the brand of PSU (some brands are known as bad and overratre the output of their PSUs).

2. Something in your case is causeing a short. Check to make sure no metal is contacting your motherboard or any other components.

Answer:My Log, Tried Everything, Nothing has Worked

Please do the following:

Download & immediately run - L2MFix.exe
Click "Install" to extract the contents to a newly created folder.

Close any programs you have open since this step requires a reboot. From the l2mfix folder, double click l2mfix.bat
Select option #2 for Run Fix by typing 2 and then pressing enter ONCE.
Do NOT depress any keys on your keyboard until the tool request you to "press any key to reboot"

On the reboot notepad will open with a log. Copy/paste the contents of that log back into this thread, along with a new hijackthis log.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run any other files in the l2mfix folder unless you are asked to do so!

If after the reboot the log does not open double click on it in the l2mfix folder to locate log.txt.

If you receive an error - \system32\Autoexec.nt is not suitable for running MS-Dos applications, you will need to visit this website to download additional files.

Question: nothing worked!

Original thread

http://www.techsupportforum.com/f50/...ed-376993.html

So, I tried doing all the preliminary steps and nothing worked. When I tried uninstalling one of my anti-viruses (spyware doctor) the little icon of security system version 4.51 said that " unins000.exe is infected " and it would not let me uninstall the spyware let alone even open it. Then, when I tried to uninstall limewire the same icon said that " A~NSISu_.exe is infected " and once more would not let me uninstall it or open it.

I decided to go to the next step by getting DDS and running it so I could should you the text and whatnot. But, once I had saved it to my desktop and tried opening it, the system secrurity bug told me that " dds.scr is infected " and would not open it or run it. When I tried the other DDS, the same thing happened. Then, when I saved GMER to my desktop and extracted the files onto my desktop also, once more the icon would not open it or run it saying that " gmer.exe is infected ".

My computer seems to not let me into anything that may lead me to deleting the virus or getting into my system to get my anti-virus to delete it. I cannot even run things that would tell me about my system. This is getting absolutely ridiculous and I'm very hopeless at the momment...

Please help!

Answer:nothing worked!

Hello and welcome to TSF.

Please try to rename DDS.scr (right click and rename) to DDS.com and see if it will run. If not, try this tool:
Download RSIT by random/random and save it to your desktop.
Double click RSIT.exe to start the tool and click Continue at the disclaimer.
When the scan completes it will open a log named log.txt maximized, and a log named info.txt minimized.
Copy (Ctrl+A then Ctrl+C) and paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of log.txt here.
Please attach info.txt to your post.
To attach a file to a new post, simplyClick the[Manage Attachments] button under Additional Options > Attach Files on the post composition page, and
copy and paste the following into the "Upload File from your Computer" box:C:\rsit\info.txt

Click Upload.

================

And for GMER, try this version please:

Download GMER Rootkit Scanner from here to your desktop. Double click the exe file. If asked to allow gmer.sys driver to load, please consent .
If it gives you a warning about rootkit activity and asks if you want to run scan...click on NO.

I appreciate that some people are not going to want to help me but if you can......Please do.
Thankyou

We get lots of postings that suddenly appear as "resolved" without any explanation, like which response solved the problem. I have found that if you post a "thank you" or "the response that solved the problem was" etc. and tick the resolved box and click on resolved then your response does not get entered. You have to post your response first and then go back into the post and tick as resolved. So maybe we shouldn't be too hasty making comments about members who don't let us know who or what solved their problem. I only put this up because I was about to do just that with two postings recently ticked as resolved with no explanation.

I have two Serif programmes, Serif PagePlus11 and a companion programme Album Plus 4.I have been to the Serif download site and downloaded a patch for AlbumPlus 4 which when Run brought up a Wizard and installed it.I did the same for Serif PagePlus 11 but there was no wizard available and the exe. patch went into My Documents. Not knowing quite what to do with the exe. icon I placed it in the main PagePlus11 folder where it resides with about fourteen other PagePlus folders such as Borders,Internet, Samples etc.etc.My guess is that the patch has not 'activated' but I do not have any way of knowing. Could anyone tell me please what I should do ?There are no details in the Control panel/programmes on either.Thanks.

Answer:Has this patch actually worked ?

I have 2 seagate hard drives, 1 80 gig, and 1 160 gig. I first had my PC running with just the 80 gig and it worked fine as master. Then I got the 160 gig plugged it in as slave and my PC knew it was there and connected to the PC but it just wasn't in "My Computer" and usable I guess you could say. So one of my friends directly connected to my computer over the internet and did something to my PC and got it working just fine (I just don't know what he did) I just formatted my PC today and the original 80 gig works but it's back to the way it was where the 160 gig isn't in "My computer" but if I go into device manager or hardware on my pc it shows it on there...what do I do?

Answer:Worked Before, But Not Anymore

Windows XP does not recognize anything over 100 gigs i believe and that could be your problem. Most hard drives come with a cd that modifies windows XP to recognize this hard drive, my hard drive was a 200 gig and windows xp would not recognize it till i loaded the western digital cd. Go to the hard drive manufacturer's site and see if you can find some driver that will enable your computer to recognize your hard drive and hopefully that should work.

My burner, which has been part of my computer since purchase has never worked. I have done everything taken it to Gateway, but they keep telling me it is fine, bulls*#!. I have switched software but the same thing happened. I seem to be able to start burning an audio cd, but approx. 13% later it just stops and freezes the computer. Gateway refuses to accept this and continues to tell me that it is fine, I have taken it to them twice, third times a charm but they are complete schmucks. Has anyone run into this problem before, I am trying to spare myself parts and labor for a new one.

Just wanted to thank everyone for the advice and chance to read the board. It helped me make some good decisions about what to get for my first build (I think).
Everything seems to be working fine, except two of the case fans, which don't start spinning when I turn on the power. The small side fan works, but the 120mm intake and exhaust fans won't spin unless you give them a bit of a nudge. Could this be because of the on-board control of fans by the PSU or MB, or are the fans just screwy?

Thanks, my specs are below.

Maybe you should plug them into the moltex connectors from your power supply. Nice rig btw. Lets see what you can oc to.

Thank you for such a great site. I came across this site after trying a specific removal of virtumonde and smitfraud from another site. After completing the steps everything in normal mode was severely slowed down and rendered virtually useless. But everything in safe mode worked. While running the cleaning process I was unable to install the Sun Java and SAS. I kept going, finished and then tried SAS again. That worked and then I was also able to get the Sun Java to load. It now seems like everything is working...but I want to be sure.

I am running Windows XP Home Edition 2002 SP 3

As a side note. Before being infected I have used McAfee Security Suite. I have been unimpressed and now have Spyware Doctor with Antivirus. Should I just uninstall McAfee and go with Spyware Doctor?

I have attached all the log files from the scans. Thanks.

This is a Vista Home-Basic SP2 OS

My Nikon Digital Camera worked on this desktop (uploaded pics from the cam to the PC) last time I attempted it (about six months ago), but since then the computer was moved (meaning unplugged, etc.), and now it won't work (PC doesn't recognize the cam?).

I used to be able to simply attach the camera to the USB cord, and it was recognized automatically. Now I can't even find it when I look for it..?

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance . . .

Answer:Dig Cam Worked Fine Before, but not now?

Have you tried a different USB cord as maybe the one you are using has become faulty ? Have you connected other devices to USB port and do they work ok. ?? Look in Device Manager and see if any Yellow exclamation or Red Cross markers. Have you connected it to another Rig??

What should I do? HELP!!!!!Thanks.

Answer:It worked fine until....

unconnect everything (both battery and ac adapter)... then press your power button ten times in 3 sec interval, with the last press duration for 30 seconds. Then connect everything back and restart, see whether this works, otherwise you could have a dead motherboard.

Well I am posting this becuase of how much of a pain this was for me to get going. I have a Dir-655 (dgl-4500 waiting in the background) and many pc's behind it. I had a wmp54gs jsut stop working and I figured what better time to try some new technology....
Wow! what a pain!
So here goes for you in the same boat.
1st - I had tweak the router settings so that the 300mbs was possible
2nd - Lappy already had it so i confirmed those speeds were available....awesome!
3rd - get a new adaptor....
Here is where it gets funny --
I tried a dwa-160 - disconnected over and over. everything else stayed solid. so I took it back, but did a little more research....found out there are revisions to the dwa-160, hmmmm
anyway...
So i returned it and bought a DWA-552 thinking that maybe the USB is the problem...same thing would connect solid, show 300mbs, but then disconnect in the middle of streaming media. So took that back..
anyway...
Now I got a Linksys WUSB600n and noticed that they had a DWA-160 revision B, so I got that too...figured WTF, right? So i tried the dwa-160 (B1) and upgraded to the newest driver and BAM...has been working for 2 days! I havent even tried the linksys, but since this has taken so long I will jsut take it back anyway.

Well to sum things up...
If you have a dir-655 and want an N adaptor for streaming media I recommend the DWA-160 (revision B), but NOT revision A...
I hope this helps at least one of you.

Answer:Which N adaptor worked for me...

How did you tweak router settings to get 300mbs?

For all who see a failed "Windows 10 Upgrade" in Windows Update;

1. Go into "C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download" and delete everything in that folder.
2. Now, run the command prompt as an administrator. Type in "wuauclt.exe /updatenow".
3. Go to your Control Panel > Windows Update and your Windows 10 will start downloading (5,398.0MB total for me on 8.1 Pro)

This is working as of 7AM in Eastern time zone.

Answer:Don't see the upgrade? Try this...worked for me!

Hi there

This doesn't work if you are running the last insider build (10240). I think you have to do this from a "Qualifying OS - W7/8/8.1).

It worked fine from a W7 Ultimate Virtual machine I'm running.

I moved. I used the laptop, a Fujitsu 1510D running WinXP Pro, during this time.

When our stuff arrived, of course one of the first things we did was set up our computers. Well, the two computers that were shipped can talk, surf, and share files just fine, but the laptop refuses to play nicely with others.

It can see the wireless connection. It can surf the 'net through the proxy connection. BUT it cannot see the other computers to share files - when I try to view the workgroup, I get the wonderful, "[workgroup] is not accessible. You might not have permission...".

This computer (which is running Win2k) can see the laptop, but when I try to connect to it, I get "//[laptop] is not accessible. Network path not found."

I've made no changes to this, the primary computer. I've made no changes that *should* have affected the laptop. However, my tech brain cells are still spinning up after a two-month hiatus. Perhaps someone can suggest the stupid little thing I'm probably forgetting?

Thanks!

Checklist for networking Windows Machines with TCP/IP
-----------------------------------------------------
- PCs which are not XP must have TCP/IP installed.
- Each PC must have a unique computer name.
- Each PC must have a network share defined.
- ALL NICS must be on the same subnet (e.g. IP 192.168.0.* subnet mask 255.255.255.0).
- XP PCs must have Netbios over TCP/IP enabled (only essential for XP to talk to W9X PCs).
- MS Client and file & printer sharing must be enabled on each machine.
- All NICs must have their node type = anything except p-node (peer to peer, or point-point).
* To check, open a command prompt and type IPCONFIG /ALL.
- XP's ICF firewall is permanently disabled. (Only necessary for pre XP SP2).
- All 3rd party firewalls are disabled, uninstalled and deleted (until connection is working).
- PCs have the same workgroup (helps, but not essential for XP/2K, necessary for 9X/ME).

Allow 15 mins after rebooting a PC for that PC to appear in the workgroup, or
for it to see all other PCs. Or you can search for the PC by its computer name.
Additional things to check if you still have problems:
-----------------------------------------------------
- Check your Services are Started on all PCs: Workstation, Server, TCP/IP Netbios helper, Computer Browser.
- XP gives access to its shares via the Net Guest Account. (Note, not the same as the local guest account in user accounts which should be off). Net Guest Account is enabled by default in XP, but... Read more

I dont think the two are related. Hibernate can be flaky for me too from time to time and I oft wonder why and have considered a post.During the course of the day the machine will put it self to sleep if left for an hour or sometimes less, also during the day I can hibernate it if going out say. However I oft find that toward the end of the day when I am ready for bed the machine is not.If left to its own devices for an evening TV's sayWhen I come back to it - its still wide awake. When its bedtime for me - it wont hibernate[shift/standby] and I have to shut itdown. All very peverse.

MS Security Essentials says I have this virus, but can't clean it. My computer comes up and stays up for about a minute, then I get a message about a critical problem and my computer will restart automatically in one minute. Does this is safe mode too. With only one minute uptime, it is hard to trouble shoot. Ran the Kaspersky Rescue Disk, but than didn't kill it. Finally, did a system restore to an earlier point with my Windows 7 installation CD. If you don't have any restore points set, your goose might be cooked. I am starting to see some tools to address Sirefef.y but none of them worked for my issue. Thanks.

Hints and tips from Terrynet on the Networking Forum

Printer and File Sharing

The following will set up a Microsoft Workgroup for File and Printer Sharing assuming the PCs are already networked via router, ad-hoc wireless or Ethernet (directly or using switch or hub).

In Network and Dial-up Connections (Win 2k Pro) or Network Connections (XP) right click on your connection and select ‘Properties.’ If not already there, install or add a check mark for “Client for Microsoft Networks, “File and Printer sharing …” and “Internet Protocol (TCP/IP).”

Right click on My Computer and on the Computer Name tab make sure you have a unique computer name and the workgroup name that you want to use for all computers. Change if necessary.

Restart the PC.

You must uninstall or properly configure any 3rd party firewalls on each machine.

If using the XP SP2 firewall: Control Panel – Windows Firewall – on the General tab it should be “On” and on the Exceptions tab “File and Printer Sharing” should be selected.

The Shared Documents folder is automatically shared. Any other folders or printers you want to share, just right click on the... Read more

First, Thanks! I created a log in for BleepingComputer primarily so I could say just how impressed I was by ComboFix!

I had a complete backup image of the infected PC so I figured I'd give it a host without asking for help first.

To make it work, I had to rename the EXE and shutdown as many services/processes as possible before it would run but when it did, it found the rootkit-based malware that was plaguing me and eradicated it.

My developer's curiosity leads me to wonder what special mojo you guys are using to get around these increasingly resilient bots but I'm happy to keep just wondering so long as it keeps the bad guys ignorant.

Thanks again!

Question: HDMI not worked

I have a new Lenovo S440, and in the other day I did a presentation in Microsoft but I had problems with my pc, the HMDI did not worked. But when I arrived to home I tested it in my TV and I tested in other big TV and it worked.... Why this sometimes worked and sometimes not worked?

Answer:HDMI not worked

Are you running HDMI to HDMI on all the monitors? There is apparently some trouble with HDMI to DVI adapters, and will cause some screens to show black despite the computer detecting the new monitor.  https://communities.intel.com/thread/49399 Looks like the only workaround is to go straight out HDMI to HDMI for the best results. Hope that helps!

Hi,

Hope you don't mind me asking this question as it is still a puzzle to me. I have built all of the PCs currently in use - one that my youngest has access to has an MSI Motherboard in it (sorry haven't got the mobo manual to hand at the moment.
Purchased an upgrade from Windows XP Pro to Windows 7 as youngest in education got a discount on the upgrade. Windows XP has to be present at point of install - cannot be a direct install or installation upgrade from within XP. In XP all the USB ports work normally but in 7 the bottom 2 (USB2) are 'dead' in 7. The MSI forum begs to differ. And I know not to add any USB peripheral device before installing software. Processor is a 2.4 Ghz AMD Athlon 64 AM2 Processor and an AGP card (8x) that requires two power sources. Power supply is 450 W - is this too low? 1 Gb 400 MHz RAM, 170 Gb Hard Drive shared equally between Windows XP and 7.

Answer:USB ports worked in XP not in 7

450W psu is probably fine, 1gb of ram is really not enough as 2gb is minumn, are dual booting for a reason because you can do a clean install of Win 7 with an upgrade version of Win 7.

I am new to this and have tried everything and it seemed to work. Then when I ran Spyware Doctor, it keeps showing infected files. I try to fix them and they don't go away. Please look at my log and tell me if anything's suspicious.

Thanks!

Answer:Tried Everything, Nothing Worked - My HiJackThis Log

Welcome to Majorgeeks!

Please follow our standard cleaning procedures which are necessary for us to provide you support. Also there are steps included for installing, running, and posting HijackThis logs as attachments.

Run ALL the steps in this Sticky thread READ & RUN ME FIRST Before Asking for Support
Make sure you check version numbers and get all updates.
Very Important: Make sure you tell us the results from running the tutorial...was anything found? Were you unable to complete any of the scans?...Were you unable to download any of the tools?...Did you do the on-line scans as suggested? etc.
After doing ALL of the above you still have a problem make sure you have booted to normal mode and run the steps in the below link to properly use HijackThis and attach a log:
Downloading, Installing, and Running HijackThis

When you return to make your next post, make sure you attach the following logs and that you have run these scans in the following order too (these scans are covered in steps 6 & 7 of the READ & RUN ME sticky)
Bitdefender
Panda Scan
HijackThis

.
If you already ran the READ ME! Where are the requested logs from step 6. Also why are you posting inline logs and why is HijackThis not installed correctly as instructed in step 7. And also your log was from safe boot mode, not normal boot mode as required.

You have a bunch of problems!

Get a new burner if this thing is giving you trouble.
Try getting a firmware update if they have any.
The burner doesn't like your disc.

I've been using AutoCad 2004 in Wxp for years. But it wont work in W7. I've tried installing Oracle virtual box but it still wont run. I'm at the end of what I know can anyone help. Thanks

Answer:Autocad worked Ok in XP why not in W7?

Welcome to Seven Forums Ukdodger. AutoCad 2004 is considered quite old, and many old programs will not run on newer operating systems. Even AutoCAD 2007 required a service pack just to run on Windows Vista. If you had Windows 7 Professional, Ultimate or Enterprise, you could try to run in in XP mode.

In searching about running it in a virtual machine I see that AutoCAD is not a good candidate for virtualization. The virtual machine does not use the GPU in the physical machine. It uses a built-in emulated graphics card, which is not a high performance unit.

I see where some have been able to run it, some only on 32 bit machines, and some with buggy performance. Truth be told, it is just too old to run natively. Hopefully someone better versed in virtual machines can pipe in. A Guy

I tried many times to get win 10 preview to work on my Samsung RV511 laptop which easily meets all the requirements.... it hangs immediately at the logo screen when trying to install. Naturally, I could get it running in a VM but that doesn't allow the OS to use the real processing power of my laptop.

However.... I'm running Win 8.1 perfectly on this machine and so I received the 'Reserve your free upgrade' invite.

How do I discover absolutely 100% if in fact the official Win 10 will actually run on my laptop....? Logically one would imagine that if the preview (any build up to 10049 when I gave up trying) wouldn't install then the official won't install either....?.... but surely the invite software is designed to test a system is capable of running Win 10 before it issues the invite...?

I tried many times to get help from the official MS Win 10 people.... but not enough staff watching their forum to cope with 4 million potential issues and I could never get a definitive answer.

If anyone here can advise me please do

Nick

Answer:Win 10 preview never worked for me... but......

You mean the logo screen, when you first boot into your DVD/USB?
It takes a long time to rotate. On my slow Laptop, about ten minutes +/-.

Dear Gamers please help, I recently had a problem with my hard drive, this resulted in a re-format. I have two drives both have been reformatted, I install the games on the second drive. They install alright, when I try to play them they load in the task manager process screen not the applications, I dont get past the game splash screens, these games worked before.

Battlefield 2, battlefield 2142 and Mark of Chaos.

My specs run all of these with ease, amd dual core 3800+ 2 meg ram, geforce 7600 gt and I have to cd/rom dvd drives, I am also using the amd optimizer software with the microsoft hotfix.

I am also using system mechanic 7 with ant virus software, I am not using the fire wall as this part of the prog caused my initial problem.

I have tried various drivers for the graphics card with no improvement.

I have tried using enditall 2 with no improvement.

XP home edition is up to date with all files from the net, are there any that will cause the problem I am having.

Would this be a directx problem

My mother board is a ECS Nforce 4 A939

Please help.......

Hi all,

Short version of the story:
I use WinXP SP2. System Restore is off at the mo unfortunately. Caught the win32trojan.tdss malware from a webpage. Browser acts up (but other browser is fine). Tried other malware removers such as Adaware. Only partial luck with Malware Bytes' Anti Malware prog. Tried Combofix, it worked great - no trace of win32trojan.tdss from what I can see. Shall I post the log?

More story details:
The partial luck with the Malware Bytes' prog sorted out the browser problems (usually random redirects from a link *within the initial HTML page*), but a scan from adaware still revealed the dreaded win32trojan.tdss malware. Hence my continued search for something that did the job better.

Apparently, I'm not supposed to use ComboFix (which I love btw) until I have posted here. I didn't heed the warning as I didn't see it until afterwards. But I seem to have come out lucky in the end - my system now seems fine. It picked up all the scary UAC************ hidden files in system32 (and some twain_32 files/folders), and got rid of them properly. I'll probably donate a bit.

Shall I post the log?

I wonder if those hidden UAC files would have shown under the BART PE bootup...

Answer:Combofix worked for me.

I think you should read the message at the top of this page. I don't think you should of used ComboFix without supervision. it's not safe to just go and use it on your own you know.

Hi,
First of all, sorry if I don't explain very well my problem, I'm French...
I have a problem that no one managed to fixed for months now...
I have bought a Samsung np350v5c a year ago in a store selling products from shops that ran out of business. It was brand new, but no more guaranteed by Samsung (it was considered as used, even if not)
The Bluetooth never worked.
I set my xperia smartphone as discoverable, but the laptop won't see anything.
When I try to change laptop bluetooth parameters "allow Bluetooth devices to detect", the Bluetooth windows simply crashes, and a message tells me than "the following parameters have not been registered: discovery settings".
I have read that I had to activate Bluetooth Support Services, but this line is missing in the list off services.
I have tried uninstall and reinstall bluetooth drivers.
So far, I don't know what to do to make it work.
Are there Bluetooth/Windows 8 experts here? Could someone help me?
Thanks

Question: Combofix worked

This is the second time I tried this fix; this time it worked.
the last time I had malware about two years ago Combo didn't work as quickly as smitfraudfix did.
I have what looks to be a Combofix log and a rapport.
I just am interested in any info on these two fix programs. they seem to respectively work better than most commercial software out there.

Answer:Combofix worked

Combofix is an extremely powerful tool which should only be used when instructed to do so by someone who has been properly trained. ComboFix is intended by its creator to be "used under the guidance and supervision of an expert", NOT for private use. Please read Combofix's Disclaimer. Using this tool incorrectly could lead to disastrous problems with your operating system such as preventing it from ever starting again. There are no self-help instructionsThank you for using BleepingComputer as your malware removal source. This topic is now closed. My internet browser was acting up. Would go to some websites sometimes. Wouldn't in the next minute.

At one point I was trying to sign into mail.live.com and it looked suspicious, like a face image made to look like the real site. I figured it was trying to grab my password so I used an email I cared less about, with fewer contacts in the mailbox. I cancelled the load after a few seconds. I only hope none of my contacts get fooled.

I tried running the anti-spyware I had. Malwarebytes would fail before it could update. Same with AdAware. So I came here.

I followed your READ & RUN and it seems to be working.

Thanks. Here are the logs for your curiosity.

If you see anything else that stinks. Unless you know how to fix it, then that's great.

I just got a new 3000+ with the 400 FSB and wanted a good cooler for it. I was running a 1900+ with a volcano 6cu and my temps were pretty good I thought. I started reading reviews of coolers and found that aluminum does a better job of getting rid of the heat into the air but copper does a better job of getting the heat from the processor so I got an idea that the volcano 6cu should work very well and during my research I also found that the better coolers also had fins going down to the board. I drilled holes thru my heatsink to let air go down to the board even drilled thru the copper just left and area in the middle for the processor to sit. Then I added a 60mm to 80mm adapter and installed a Thermal Take smart fan and Artic Silver 5. I am now running 31C idle and 38C full load and this is from 2 sensors so I think the temps are real. I'v got the fan working off the temp probe so nice and quite when ideling but it does get louder under load. I also cut slots in the fan shroud like the silent fans from Themal Take But this didn't help much with the noise. But it cools very well. Also the specs say that the 2 processors put out the same amount of heat 68 watts which really suprised me.

Thanks in advance!

OK, here goes:
I've got 3 training DVD's that used to work on my XP Home ed SP2 LapTops DVD/CD-RW. Put one in and eventually after the normal churning it would start up. Now for some unknown [to me] reason none of the three will. To add some mystery to all of this they work fine on my wifes LapTop and also on our desktop. Here's what I get:

The opening screen that askes if I want to install, start, or bonus. I always selected start. Then another screen asking if I want to go back or Launch From CD. I choose the Launch From CD. Always have in everycase mentioned above.

A screen appears that says that it is loading, so far all is normal. But here's the rub. An error message appears saying that "Error parsing XML data: not well-formed at line 32, column 101" and the only selection is "OK" so I "OK" it. Then I get a "Director Player Error" stating that "Index out of range --------- Script Error. Continue? and the selection of yes or no. Neither is worth it weight.

I've tried other DVD's and other auto run disks all is good. Just not these three???

Why did these DVD's work on my machine earlier in the day, why will they work on other comps? So I uninstalled the DVD/CD-RW's driver, restarted and kept my fingers crossed. No go. Got me stumped. Any body out there got any clues?

Thank you again,
Art

Answer:Worked here and there, still there but not here anymore ???

Give the DVD disc a good clean, it could be a combination of a smudge or fingerprint and a low level of laser output in the drive (relative to the other PC's)

Hey there,

This was my first time overclocking a computer. After doing everything my computer started up normal. My question is when using "cpu-z" it show's my computer at normal core speed 3.4ghz However if I go back into the bios and check it's telling me I am overclocked to 4.3ghz.

I looked at a lot of video's to give me the basic's and chose this one because it was the same bios.

I'm not an expert but from what I can see the top bit (Specification shows the stock specifications of the CPU when you take it out of the box but the Core Speed is what the CPU is currently clocked at.

Because Microsoft has never stopped giving it away. Thank you for confirming for us that they still haven't pulled the plug!

Hello -I ran a backup and I got it on 3 DVD.  The program said it was successful.  Now I want to run a restore.  I go to the control panel and click on backup and restore center.   This brings up a panel which has a restore files space which I click on.  That brings up a panel which has the date and the DVD that I ran the backup on.  If I click on next I can restore files and folders.  This is not what I want.  I want to use the backup to restore everything because I have made a mistake and want to go back to a time before the mistake.  I hope someone can figure out what I am trying to say and tell me where I am going wrong.     Thanks      Bob

Answer:My restore has not worked

Hello TSG,

I recently started getting an "AdYield" pop-up during web browsing. I have used several spyware, ad-aware, and anti-malware programs to no avail. Even tried a restore with negative results. RegCure was also unable to detect this infection. I'm using XP OS with IE Explorer to access the Web...

My computer suffered a major breakdown about 10 days ago and I mean Major.
I couldn’t access the main hard drive at all and the message was files corrupted and cannot be accessed.
My second HD carried most of my data files and Word documents plus other databases etc. but still a lot of really important stuff was still on the main drive. Despair.
I finally found that the lad who does all the tech. stuff for me had some Data Recovery software. I hotfooted it over to his place with the HD in my bag and he then managed to access it. He said that there was NO FILE SYSTEM on the disk. Is that a clue? How could have been operating for a year or more?
Upshot is that he got almost all my lost data. He then formatted the HD and transferred my files from his machine to the newly formatted HD now with NTFS file system on it. The main disk files were cleared into his computer and then formatted with Win XP Pro.
Belt & braces us Brits - He also put my files on to a few DVD s.
I now have the big HD in the computer as the second HD with one external drive fitted but that has a part-empty 80 Gb HD.
At first it all worked well but there are a couple of mysteries which you may be able to help with.
Yesterday, I tried to download Mozilla-Firefox. It went almost to the end and then the whole machine froze! I had to press the reboot button to get back.
I found there was still a rectangular blue box on the desktop with the Avast logo and "firefox.exe" in it. So.
I removed the Mozi... Read more

Ok so about a week ago I noticed that my mouse had suddenly started to lag from time to time. It doesn't seem to be related to the system being taxed as sometimes it occurs in plain old windows while nothing is running and it's only the mouse..keyboard works fine while the mouse is lagging.

Sometimes the mouse will simply not drag smoothly or at all...sometimes it will drag fine but it wont click on anything. Only way I know to fix it is to pull the wireless usb token and plug it back in but thats only a temp fix and sometimes will only last a few seconds before it reverts back to lagging.

-I've updated the drivers of my graphics card.
-Updated the mouse drivers.
-Searched a bunch of things online and tried them such as disabling aero point and making sure my comp is using all 4 processors.
-bought a new mouse
-tried using all 4 usb ports
-set the power options on the computer to high performance

I'm out of ideas.

My system
Acer Aspire 5755G laptop
Intel Core i5 - 2430 CPU @ 2.4 GHZ
8 GB ram
Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit
Graphics card is a Nvidia 540m
-its also currently connected to a 21" acer G215HV screen

any ideas? Its making browsing annoying and any kind of gaming impossible.

Answer:Mouse lag - nothings worked. please help!

This is going to sound ridiculous but try a different mouse pad or flip the one over you have, or try some other surface. Seriously try it. Let me know if it worked.
