Preferred Solution: in Start menu programs showing same Format ?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: in Start menu programs showing same Format ?

DO NOT include personal email addresses or other personal contact information, no one will answer you that way.Search at the top of this page for 'File Association Fix Windows 7' (no quotes) for many similar posts and probably a how to's or two.You have to be a little bit crazy to keep you from going insane.

Hi,

Now that I have installed Win 10 AU the Start Menu has all my programs showing by default (in the alphabetical list).
Previously I could hide this. How do I do that now?

At the top of the list is "Recently added" programs, which is fine, I just dont want the full list below that.
Any way to hide those, or even that whole column?

Thanks.

Hello. I have been adding/deleting some entries/folders from the startup,
customizing it to make it small.

All was OK, but suddenlly the startup button only shows ONE FOLDER:
the PROGRAMS folder; all other folders don?t appear.

If I check with the explorer the other folders are there, under the
C:\Documents and Settings\Julio\Start Menu

but the only one that appear is the PROGRAMS folder:
C:\Documents and Settings\Julio\Start Menu\Programs

Hope to have been clear about the issue.

Thanks for help and attention.

In Windows XP when you click on start you should be able to see the most active opened files show up on a list.

For some reason mine isn't working. Nothing shows up except for the pinned items like Internet Explorer and Outlook.

I checked the settings and it should show 6 of the most used programs. I also checked to make sure the prefetch directory was functioning and it is and I also made sure the dcom and support services were running which they were.

How cn I fix this because I find it handy having links of my most used files that I use. I would rather not pin them to the start menu if possible.

Any help would be greatful

When you say '..mine isn't working.', do you mean that 'My Recent Documents' doesn't show up on the Start Menu? Or that 'My Recent Documents' is displayed but doesn't show you anything.

In any case, I only can guide you to where the control for it is.

Right click on Start -> Properties -> Start Menu tab -> Customize -> Advanced tab -> check the Check Box under the Recent Documents section.

Hope that helps.

Hi guys. I've had this program for a couple of months, but i've been wanting to turn it back on and i can't for the life of me figure out what's wrong. I use ccleaner, tweak UI, aulosgic bootspeed before to mess with settings to make my computer faster. I'm running xp with only 2gb of ram, and i need all the memory i can get for when i mess with audio production programs.
Now, since doing searches on google, i've turned off and on the recent document list after clicking on properties on top of start menu > properties > start menu > customize > advance. That didn't work. I went into the registry to see if StartMenuInit and it's set to 2. NoStartMenuMFUprogramslist is set to 1 i heard to make sure NoInstrumentation is also set to 1.
I've cleared the list in both places in the customize menu properties sections ( general+advanced)
I went in TweakUI, CCleaner and Auslogic to make sure all the options for that kind of thing would be on or off. And it's all looking like it should've been displaying but it's not. I don't know what else to do. Does anyone have any idea? I did a search on this site, and it didn't really go anywhere.
Thanks a lot if you can help me.

Answer:[SOLVED] Start menu recent programs not showing

Ccleaner can be set to remove the list of recently used applications above the start button so I would check again to make sure that feature is disabled:

Open Ccleaner
Under the "Windows" tab, scroll down to the "Advanced" section.
Make sure the following item is unticked: User Assist History

I have been having a problem with my start menu in Windows 10!

When I search up a program like "Paint" or "Photoshop" it does not show up! However, built-in apps such as "Settings" and "Edge" show up!

I have tried rebuilding the search index with no luck so far!

I also tried restarting Cortana and even re-registering it! Still no luck!

Alrighty! In the process of your restore did you happen to create a new user profile, or are you logging in with a different profile?

All the things you are after are located in the directory:

c:\documents and settings\username

where username is the name of the profile whos settings you are after. The desktop folder has that users desktop icons, the start menu folder contains the start menu shortcuts

Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\ should contain your firefox profile (and bookmarks.htm)

When I clicked a link in a forum that I frequent daily, I got a threat advisory screen called "Windows Vista Recovery". The report showed bad sectors on my hard drive and registry errors and hard drive failure and RAM missing. Then, the advisory wanted me to buy their software. Until this point, I was convinced this was an internal or local (to my machine) program. When I declined to purchase the software, my computer rebooted to black screen, with all files hidden. I finally got to "ckdsk" and fixed the bad sectors, then I used SpyBot Search and Destroy to get rid of the "Windows Vista Recovery" program. Still, no programs or files showing, but can type into search box for IE. Next, I scanned with AVG, and caved to buy PC Tuneup from AVG. More looking around...seems that everything is still there, just inaccessible. I have very little knowledge about fix-its and files, so I really don't know what's next. Please help!!!

Just moved to Windows 7.

We're told over and over that the new start menu is better in every conceivable way, but the truth is, for a keyboard oriented power user like me, it truly sucks. At least, the default setup, and all the customizations I've attempted, truly suck swamp water.

In XP, I configured all my programs to be accessible in 3 keypresses. Eg. by putting Notepad under Start > Tools > Notepad, I could bring it up in a split second by pressing Windows Key, T, N - likewise for the ~20 other programs I have. I've had this for 8 years and it's ingrained in my style, but more importantly, it is genuinely highly efficient.

I've tried my darndest in W7 to recreate this. However several things are in the way:

1) After the windows key, the Search box has the focus. So no matter what you type in, it isn't shortcutting through the programs menu, it's typing in a search query.

2) I can't seem to create my own top level menus under the start menu (like "tools", "office" etc).

3) The All Programs link doesn't open up a menu with sub menus etc - just lists them in a single list. Maybe typical users prefer this (fair enough) but it's brain damagingly irritating for a power user, as you lose all sense of hierarchy and location.

Can anyone suggest how I could recreate my old XP behavior in W7?

Thanks for any help.

Answer:Programs Not Listed in Start Menu Or Add/Remove Programs

Hey, i assume when you re-installed XP you attempted to keep your programs?

When re-installing XP i believe the registry is re-written, which would account for them being missing from the Add/Remove programs panel.

As for the start menu, star menu entries can be found in these two directories:

Code:
C:/Documents and Settings/All Users/Start Menu
C:/Documents and Settings/[Your Username]/Start Menu
i'm assuming they've been re-written too, if the programs still run then all you need to do is drag a shortcut to the main EXE into one of them folders, if they don't i suggest you re-install them.

Could you clarify how you re-installed XP? did you choose some non-destructive re-install(in order to keep your programs)?

Cheers,
Jamey

Answer:Wrong name showing in start menu

Hello pancake,

That would be correct then. The original user name will always be used in places like this.

The only true way to fully change your user name is to create a new account on the PC with the name you wanted instead.

"About 1:00 this morning, my Gateway Laptop starting acting strangely. I was surfing the web when suddenly my computer began running incredibly slowly. I decided to restart, but when my profile opened, my entire desktop was clear, start menu included, save for my wallpaper.

I brought it into Best Buy this morning and they told me that it was a virus that hit explorer.exe and that I had to back up everything and nuke the hard drive with a reformat.

I've had to reinstall Windows 10 on my Dell XPS 15 today - see thread here for the issues that led to this step:
I did the install via the recovery tool System Refresh thing and I'm now just about up and running again however it's definitely not quite the same Windows setup I had before - for one thing, I have never had Cortana up to now.
Anyway, ignoring that I am having an issue with the Start menu, namely no new programmes are showing up on it post-installation. I've Googled it and while a lot of people are mentioning it (mostly in 2015 it seems), I can't seem to find a solution.
Has anyone encountered this and can you suggest how to fix please?
Many thanks.

Hello

I have a strange problem and sadly none of the GREAT guides about the star menu on this forum helped.
The Problem is:

My start menu "All Programs" only shows the Icons/Folders from:
%systemdrive%\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu
But it does not show any Icons from my user:
%UserProfile%\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu

I've got no clue how to fix that. Can someone help me?

Thank you

Hi all,

I have recently upgraded to Windows 7 Ultimate from Vista Ultimate, and everything has gone okay except for when I press the windows key/Ctrl + Esc on my keyboard, or click on the windows start icon on screen, nothing happens. Another problem is that there are no group icons appearing on the taskbar (IE/windows explorer/media player etc)

Does anyone have any ideas what could be causing this?

Thanks in advance,

Stuart

I'm on XP x64. Whenever I start up my computer nowadays, the start menu doesn't even show up. I've been waiting for a long time for it to. The reason I'm able to post on these forums is because I went through Task Manager, and File -> New Task (Run...) and typed firefox to access this site. It's just the idiotic startbar. Halp?

EDIT: Oh yeah. Whenever I log in (i'm using the Welcome screen), and it says "applying your personal settings..." or whatever, I have to hit ctrl alt delete to ge ttask manager. The only time windows will load is if the start menu DOES show up which is rare.

Answer:HELP!Start menu and taskbar not showing up!

Have you tried going to My Computer > Control Panel > Taskbar Properties. And uncheck "autohide" and checking "always on top."

If that doesn't work, then try moving the cursor to the bottom of the screen and right clicking. If you get a different menu click "properties" and then click "always on top," and uncheck "autohide."

Answer:The Windows start menu bar is not showing

Hi lwabbott and welcome to TSF !

I removed your mail since leaving it in plain text on an open forum will get you plenty of spam in your mail box in no time once bots will have found it. I can remove your phone number as well if you want.

Is it only the task bar or the task bar and icons ? In the first case have you tried dragging the mouse to the bottom of the screen to check that it was not unlocked and minimized ? What happens when you press the windows key ?

If all the icons are gone as well then can you access the task manager by pressing ctrl+alt+del ? If so what happens when you go to file => new task and type explorer.exe ? Go to file => new task and type chkdsk c: /R. You'll be prompted to restart the computer and your hard drive will be checked for errors. See how it goes.

Do you have the XP install CD and what service pack is on the CD ? If this is some brand computer that didn't come with a CD then what's the brand and model ?

I don't know why, but I've noticed that all the programs in the start menu with links to websites don't show the IE7 icon. Why is that. I've also noticed in the system32 folder that the shell32.dll shows up many times with numbers beside them. I have shel32(3).dll, 4,5,6 + the original shel32.dll. I don't think it's normal. How the hell did they duplicate like this? And how do I correct the situation with the icon association in the start menu?

Thank you

I've looked around the internet for anyone who had a problem like this but
i havent found a single forum anywhere that helps so..

I run 64-bit windows vista and recently i downloaded Grand Chase to it.
The first day it worked just fine but today after experiencing some heavy lag
spikes,i restarted my computer and when i tried to open grandchase from the
desktop shortcut(Ran as administer)The desktop just froze. So i tried running it from
the start menu but it did the same, only when i tried to click anything in the start menu
after trying to run Grand Chase,it just gave me a "bing" sound. The only solution to unfreezing
the two is to log off and back onto my computer but Grand Chase still wont work.

I dont think it's the game itself but rather my computer, since i had this same issue before
with yahoo messenger but i cant remember what i did,if anything,to fix it but Yahoo messenger
works just fine now..System restore is out of the question, since the last checkpoint it's made was
sometime in 2011 which i used once before and was basically restored back to a horrible point where
i had alot of viruses and things ran extremely slow with no norton security or anything to help it..

Anybody have some ideas..?I'm able to reinstall the game via safe mode but when i go back to
normal mode it's the same story retold from point A.

Answer:Computer desktop/start menu freeze when i try to start certain programs

You can try installing Game Booster and running Grand Chase via Game Booster, and see if that helps.

Answer:Failed To Load Dll, No Start Menu, Programs Wont Start, Etc

Please try using this to repair the broken registry entry that may be causing this.Download Autoruns, search for the related entry and then delete it.Create a new folder on your hard drive called AutoRuns (C:\AutoRuns) and extract (unzip) the file there. (click HERE if you're not sure how to do this.)Open the folder and double-click on autoruns.exe to launch it.Please be patient as it scans and populates the entries. When done scanning, it will say Ready at the bottom.Scroll through the list and look for a startup entry related to the file(s) in the error message.Right-click on the entry and choose delete.Reboot your computer and see if the startup error returns.

I have a lot of programs installed and have my own toolbars to access them. Seeing all those programs on the Programs list of the start menu is distracting. All I really want is the folders that house subprograms. The only option offered is to uninstall but not to remove from the list. My guess is the registry but where to look?

Well, that's new - the normal request is 'how do I add things to the Start?'

No, not in the registry. There are actually two folders that are combined to make that list: one for All Users and a personal one for each user. You can customise both. This Tutorial tells you how.

Every time (19 out of 20) I have to push Start\All Programs\ program...

Can All Programs appear first and Recent Programs second?
Can Recent programs menu be deleted to put All Programs first?

eg Start\Program...

I have searched everywhere for a solution.

Can anyone help with this please.

Thanks.

Answer:Start menu with All Programs first and Recent programs second

Not that I know of, but I know that there are ways to make it easier to start the program. My favorite way is by pinning it to the Taskbar or even to the Start Menu. The first 10 items on the Taskbar starting from the left are accessible by pressing Windows Key + 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, etc. all the way up to 0. Pressing Windows Key + 0 accesses the 10th item. The rest can be given Shortcut Keys.

Another is by simply opening the Start Menu, typing the name of the program (or even just the first few letters), and then pressing Enter - or using the arrow keys to select it first if necessary.

Another way is to make it so that as soon as your mouse cursor touches All Programs, it's the same as clicking it. I'm talking about a 0ms menu delay for the mouse which is done in the Registry.

All,

I tried a new program to format an external harddisk, swissknife. As a result, I managed to change the file system of de D-drive from FAT32 or NTFS to RAW (?). In addition, in the C-drive some start-up files were changed and I couldnt boot windows. The last problem is solved, the D-drive is permanently damaged but thats not the question here.

After this my "Start Menu > All Programs" only contains a few programs and my previous list is gone. Most links to programs and tools are missing. I read about similar problems in XP which seem to be registry related but I dont know what to change. Attached a screenshot of the program menu that pops up which is pretty empty. Used programs are stored in the start-menu.

Any advise? Many thanks

I recently installed windows 10 on an old notebook and for some reason the start menu looks like this:

I don't want it to show the alphabetical list of all the apps by default. On all my other computers the start menu looks more like this one.

http://home.bt.com/images/windows-10...0929103327.jpg

How do I change it? Its really bugging me.

Answer:Start Menu default showing all apps?

Well, this is the new post-Anniversary Update Start Menu. Yes, it is supposed to have the alphabetical list of all apps on the front page. It is a major feature.

And yes, we all agree that it is a terrible idea. Windows 10 Start Menu structure is disorganized. And bringing anything disorganized to the front is always a design error. But apparently this is what we'll have to live with until Microsoft has the next terrible idea to replace this terrible idea.

Or just use a Start Menu replacement program.

I was attacked by virus that started SECURITY 2011 pop ups. It hid all my documents and settings subdirectories and links. Originally I had to run fixmbr and fixboot from the command line in order to get my laptop to even boot. I have ran malware bytes several times and removed viruses. I ran unhide.exe and my subfolders and links are accessable but the start menu subfolder show nothing (blank). I have went back to a pre-virus restore point. The desktop folder and links are present but they do not shown on screen when I login. Task Manager is not available unless I login under an alternative administrator login on the computer. AVG is not running properly. Several items such as resident shield are inactive and will not start. I have ran ccleaner and rkill. How do I get my desktop to show and my start menu links back?

Answer:Desktop and links under start menu not showing

Sorry about the confusion in the other topic, but can you try the following:UnHide which will restore hidden files. But I see that you ran ccleaner, what all did you do with CCleaner? Also can you identify the exact fake malware that infected your machine?

Hi people!
As the title states, I have an annoying problem with the start menu i Win XP Professional SP2 (Danish version). My start menu lists the entire content of the "C:\Program Files" folder ("C:\Programmer" in the Danish version). And not as shortcuts, as the real program folders, if I delete them, I remove programs.

I have googled for this for many hours, but I found only one thread listing the same problem, and the advice there was to restart in "Last Know Good Configuration" mode and try to clean up the system from spyware. Here's the link: http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20071119220913AAw3ucI

I doubt the problem comes from spyware or vira (and the above method didn't work out for me).
I was using TweakUI for XP (a Microsoft Powertoy http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/powertoys/xppowertoys.mspx), and I altered the "special folder" Program Files, relocating it to another drive, but I don't understand why that would ruin the start menu? The "Start Menu" folder doesn't hold any of the "Program Files" folders. (And of course I've tried undoing my changes)
I hope someone will be able to help me.
Cheers

The problem: All the shortcuts from “C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs” have disappeared from my start menu. The ones from C:\Documents and Settings\<current user>\Start Menu\Programs are still shown.

I have spent the weekend trying to fix this, to no avail, so hopefully someone can give me some new ideas.

I’m running XP SP3 on a Toshiba laptop. I can’t be sure exactly when this happened, but I noticed it on Friday, and I am 100% certain this problem did not exist the previous weekend. In that period of time the only software installs were an update for Keepass and an update for Mathcad. It is possible that something else notified me an update was available and I just installed it without thinking about it, but if so it would only be something like Java or Adobe flash.

If I go to “C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs” the shortcuts are all there, and they are not hidden, they just don’t appear on the start menu.

The obvious way to fix this was to just roll back to a recent restore point where the problem does not exist. Unfortunately, I could not get any restore point to work, even when doing the restore entirely in safe mode (i.e. start the restore in safe mode, and finish it in safe mode). After a lot of messing around I came to the conclusion that the restore point cache was corrupted. I confirmed that by turning System Restore off and back on to clear the c... Read more

First off sorry if this is in wrong forum but I have searched for over an hour and have not found a specific solution.

The typical 32 bit programs are installing in the program files 86 folder. I understand this is where they are supposed to end and the computer sorts downloaded files depending on capability.

My problem is not all programs in program files and program files 86 are showing up in start menu. I have set my start menu customization to default and I am not experiencing the complete disappearance of all programs.

This is a brand new computer out of the box with 64 bit.

Twice now I've had pinned apps disappear from my start menu - for example, I pinned a game & the notepad to the start menu. Then when going back to the start menu later, they're gone. I have repinned them in a different spot on the start menu & they seem to be staying now - is this normal?

I believe that you have to be logged in under your MS account to use/see Store Apps. If you have a local login, I believe that you can't use/see them. If you switch from one to the other(MS account to Local), this could be the problem.

When I try to hibernate, the screen goes black, then immediately comes back to the log on screen; this is regardless of whether I go into hibernate via the start button, pushing the power button, or closing the lid. I have each of those methods set to hibernate.

I actually cloned my original HDD to an SSD; the original HDD was about 10GB larger than the SSD, but nowhere full. I was not experiencing any issues with the HDD. After the clone, I am not having any functionality issues besides the inability to go into hibernate mode.

What I've tried so far includes: Followed all steps in the tutorial/guide for the enable/disable hibernate. here
Looked through my BIOS settings, reverted them to defaults.
Performed a disk repair.
Ran CCleaner.
Looked through all my power plan settings to ensure hibernate is enabled and no options say "never" for hibernate.
Increased the file of hibersys.fil to 100% per the tutorial here

The rationale for using hibernate and why this is a big deal to me is as follows. Booting take time compared to dehibernating, which is instant. Also, more importantly, I usually have at least 8 instances of word/excel/email client/PDFs/web browser open as I work on a project. I often need to power down the laptop and then continue where I left off and reopening all of those items is quite annoying. Using hibernate, I do not have to close the various documents/programs to power down. This increases my efficiency enormously. Also please note that sl... Read more

Answer:Laptop won't hibernate despite showing in start menu, help please

I also rely on the modern Hibernate function which normally works well. If it doesn't then the first suspect is the Display adapter. Run Windows Updates to see if there are newer under optional - install all Important and Optional as well and keep it set to Automatic Install.

If not import the latest display driver from the PC or Device's Support Downloads webpage. If latest, try the previous one. They are saved in Device manager>Driver>update>Browse>Let me Pick.

If this fails, look in Device Manager to make sure your Network adapter Power Options allow it to suspend for sleep. These Power Options may also be available on other drivers' tabs.

When I start up my computer, my Steam starts up, then I manually start Chrome. Chrome comes up fine, Steam does too, but when I try to right click on Steam and click friends, all it does is create another steam process running at 100-108 K. Then if I close Chrome and try to reopen it, it will do the same. This happens with EVERY program after I start up. There's a 5 second window where I can open programs without issue, then after that it will only start 108 K copies of them. It takes me around 30 restarts just to get it working properly, if not more.

I have experienced a sudden problem starting programs. The computer boots correctly, and all desktop icons appear correctly. But when I double click a desktop icon, or start a program from the start menu, I get a popup window displaying a list of programs and asking me which program I want to use to start the application. I select the correct program (or browse to the appropriate .exe file), but still the application doesn't start. This includes IE and Windows Messenger. My virus scanner was about the only thing that I could start up, and I did a system scan with Panda Anti-Virus, but it didn't show anything substantial (just some cookies).Using my WinXP set up disk, I've tried to do a repair (I guess reinstallation without reformatting the hard disk), but after I entered the License Key, the computer did a reboot and then stopped. It is stuck on the XP splash screen and won't go any further (I once let it run over night, but it was still frozen on the splash screen). I even tried to repeat the repair process, but that didn't work.Automatic updates did download an update just before this problem started (I think it was the day before the problems began). I don't know what this update was and I'm not sure it was SP3 (system does have SP2 installed).Considering that the computer freezes now when booting up, is there anything that I can do short of reformatting the Hard Drive???? Please see the picture. (folder names are deleted by me)

OK, yesterday there were those 3 shortcuts in top, 3 directories, and 'notepad, calculator, ms paint', I use all of those everyday, so it's not mistaken.

And today I suddenly discovered that calculator and ms paint shortcuts are gone.

So I checked the directory, and- (as you can see in the picture)
1.calculator shortcut is still there, but hidden in the start menu.
2.ms paint shortcut is removed.

So I googled for information and did what I could, I ran unhide.exe, anti-virus(avast), and anti-malware(malwarebyte), and I think my pc is clean, no virus or malware deteced. and calculator shortcut is still not showing.

I'm afraid if it's a sign of some remote manipulation from some trojan or someone.

How can I solve this?

Answer:Pinned start menu shortcuts removed/not showing. (win 7)

Hello Juj, and welcome to Seven Forums.

The area in your Start Menu shortcut looks like "recent items" instead of "pinned programs". "Pinned programs" would be above another line above your "recent items".

If able to, what happens when you "Pin to Start Menu" these programs? Are they pinned to the Start Menu afterwards?

Onto the problem:

My computer ( I use Windows XP SP3 ) at some point prevented me that the computer had to shut down due to NT System. After restart, the virus fully kicked into effect with the start menu and bar not working, most programs not working, crashing or plain disabled (such as System Restore). Even running in Safe Mode doesn't help. My anti-virus is a outdated but gave me the following information on "buffer overflows":

C:\Program files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe:WS2_32.socket
C:\Program files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe:ADVAPI32.RegCreateKeyExA

After seiing these, I could not stop or delete internet explorer. Also, running SpyBot was ineffective as it would only check for browser files rather then doing a full computer scan.

I will end this post with the HijackThis log and by thank you guys for your wonderful help as I have read over the years but never posted.

Bump.

I know this issue is complex but due to it, I can virtually do nothing on my computer (to top it off, the audio doesn't work). I am using another computer to post.

I'm just going to bump for visibility and thank in advance whoever is looking into this

Hi,

I've used powershell to remove some apps (like Xbox games).

On one account, it cleaned up the start menu just fine.

Second account, they were showing on the start menu, so I ran powershell again and verified everything was gone that I wanted, but Xbox is still showing on the menu list. *Not* as a tile, but in the "All Apps" list. I have also tried looking at the Start Menu in File Explorer for that User and can not see the App listed.

Suggestions?

Thanks,
Yvonne

2 suggestions :
1. Create another user account with exactly the same account type > logon to it and see if tiles show up at Start Menu.
If yes, then your old account is corrupted.
Use the new account for a few days, or even weeks, to make sure. If all runs well, go back to the old account > backup files you want to keep > then delete the old account.
2. Run a system file check to look for corrupt files. It will try to do repair if any found.
You will receive one of the following 3 reports :
A) No integrity violation.
B) Found corrupt files and repair successful.
C) Found corrupt files but unable to repair some of them.
Post back on which of the 3 reports you receive.

Hi. I have windows 10 home x64 in my desktop. My laptop has the also windows 10 home x64 and displays correctly the start menu search partial matches for words that i search. The desktop won't do that.
For example i search in the laptop "word" and it show's me the Microsoft word application. To get the same result in the desktop i need to write the full name of the executable "winword" or it won't show matches. Another example is "paint"... i need to type "mspaint".
Windows explorer search works. It displays partial filename matches and partial file contents.
Only the start menu search is not working like it supposed.

Anyone can help me? The laptop is ok... the desktop isn't!!!

Just upgraded WIndows Vista to Windows 7 from a download. The installation appeared to be fine but all of the icons on the desktop have lost their pictures and none of the start menu icons are showing any design nor do they work. I've tried deleting the icon cache and restarting but that hasn't worked. Any ideas?

Answer:All icons in start menu and desktop are showing blank

hi have you looked at brinks tutorial How to Rebuild the Icon Cache in Windows 7 Icon Cache - Rebuild - Windows 7 Forums

Quote:
If one or more of your icons are not displaying correctly, or that your icon cache is corrupted, then you might consider rebuilding the icon cache to reset and reload the icon images into the icon cache.

The icon cache is located at the hidden system folder location below:

C:\Users\User-Name\AppData\Local\IconCache.db

Hello!

I have a weird problem with the folder called "Games" under programs in the start menu. It is NOT the Games Explorer link I'm having problems with.

The Games folder consists of the following folders:

%appdata%\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Games (Roaming)
%programdata%\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Games

It would seem that the Roaming-folder has a localized name (desktop.ini) - in my case "Spil" and that the Programdata folder does not and is called Games.

The weird thing is that the folder in the start menu has always been called "Spil" and not as it is now "Games".

It's an annoying thing and I don't get it - why has this changed? Is there a way to make this folder appear localized again?

Furthermore, I have some games in both folders which have lost their paths to either the Game Explorer or the actual position on the harddrive - I'm thinking I may have a problem with permissions or the registry?

Maybe someone knows of a way to reset this or where to look in the registry or a way to reset permissions on these folders.

Thank you in advance!

/S?ren

Answer:Games folder not showing correctly in Start Menu...

After half a year of waiting for a reply and trying different things I figured it out. So to my own future reference here is the solution:Open the %appdata%\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs folder
Create a folder named "Games" if not already there
Open a command prompt in the Programs folder and type "attrib Games +R"
Copy the desktop.ini from the %programdata%\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Games folder
Paste the desktop.ini to the %appdata%\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Games folder
And voila! The two localized Games folders magically merge into one localized folder called "Spil" in the Start Menu.

For some reason this folder lost its R-attribute which sometimes happens to the Program Files folder and other system folders as well.

Anyway, hope this helps someone besides myself!

I am having an issue with the tart menu and desktop icons not showing up. I am running Windows XP. Explorer.exe is also not showing in the Windows Task Manager.

I ran MalwareBytes and followed the instructions and it found a few items and cleared them out. The obvious one that might contribute to the problem was:

Registry Data Items Infected:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced\StartMenuLogOff (Hijack.StartMenu) -> Bad: (1) Good: (0) -> Quarantined and deleted successfully.

It said the items were deleted successfully and I rebooted my system, but there still is no icons or start menu. I ran HijackThis for a report and it said "For some reason your system denie access to the Hosts file. If any hijacked domains are in this file, HijackThis may NOT be able to fix this." Then it gave instructions on how to remove the file manually - it finished the scan and this is the report...

Today I'm having a little trouble with my laptop. It started up fine, but only the desktop background loaded. The icons, start menu and toolbar were all MIA. here's the best part of all though; I couldn't open task manager. On my laptop CTRL+ALT+DELETE makes a box pop up giving me the option of logging off, locking the computer, shutting down, retrieving the task manager, and changing my password. This box opened up completely fine! When I clicked task manager it didn't load at all. Here's some information that might help you:OS: Windows XPI don't have any virus protection (heinous, right? ), and I've been getting a lot of pop ups. Everything I do - pop up! Even when I close the internet, there's a pop up. This is probably the problem. PLEASE, PLEASE HELP!

Answer:Desktop Icons, start menu and toolbar not showing up!

QuoteThis is probably the problem. Most likely.I see Windows reinstall here.

Is there any way to have the contents of a folder that I have pinned to the start menu show up in a sub-menu of the folder icon? I have several tools that I use on a daily basis that I would like to have easy access to. Pinning then all individually would not be ideal, so I figured this would be the best way, but I can't figure out how to show the contents of my folder.

Thanks!

Answer:Showing contents of folder pinned to Start Menu?

Hello Sublimnl, and welcome to Seven Forums.

You might consider creating a toolbar with the folder on the taskbar instead like in this Quick Launch tutorial. Just substitue your folder path instead. This way you can have it expand how you wanted.

Hope this helps,
Shawn

I use the Classic Start Menu. Have new laptop. Start menu does not show full menus. Instead shows the damn arrows that Word does before you select "Show Full Menus." It's fine on my husband's log-in. I can't find anything in the properties that will let me select "full menus." Anyone know?

Answer:Solved: Start Menu not showing full menus

You are talking about the Programs Menu? That would be the "Use Personalized Menus"

I have a new notebook with xp home. I've noticed that there are some programs that came with the system that do not show up under Start/All Programs. Example is Microsoft's Picture It! 7.0 which I can run by finding it under My Computer, but I can't see it anywhere under Start/All Programs. I'm sure there are others as well. Can someone explain this? TIA.

Answer:Start/All Programs not showing all programs

Is it possible that just out of view at the bottom of the screen is a double arrow on which you can click to extend the list and show more menu items? If not I'm out of ideas except to say customise the Start Menu by increasing the number of recently used programmes shown in the list directly above the Start button. This you do by right clicking a vacant area of the Taskbar and look at Properties.

Today I updated my Nvidia driver and rebooted my machine. Everything seemed to go well. I did not receive any errors.

When I opened my start menu I noticed that some programs that I almost never use anymore were my only recent programs. I then opened a program that use often that was not listed. I then opened a file and then closed the program. Even though there was room on the recent programs area the application was not showing up.

After some searching around I saw people talk about their two check boxes on the privacy section of the start menu options being grayed out. I checked mine and they we checked and were enabled. Other forum posts said to uncheck them restart and the re-check them. I did this but to no avail. I was deciding to just live with it as pinning to the start menu still works.

I started pinning my most important apps and opening a file to make sure that the recent files jump menu was showing up. It works for all applications except Microsoft applications. I added MS Excel to my pinned list and opened a recent file (that shows up in the apps recent files section) then saved it and closed Excel. When I opened my start menu again Excel still lacks a jump menu for recent apps.

Any help on this will be appreciated.

I upgraded to the insider 14316 build. Now when I click on the Start menu and type something to search for, nothing shows, neither what I'm typing nor the results.

In this pic, I pressed the Windows key then typed msra. Nothing shows in the search or results area but if I press Enter I get the Remote assistance windows.

Edit: Forgot to mention this is in a Oracle Virtualbox VM of Windows 10 Pro Insider Preview 64 bit.

Hi people, and I really need experts with this issue:

- I uninstalled IE9, then after restart, I can no longer see text in warning messages, windows titles, taskbar clock, or even icon names, something like that but without start menu even showing:
- I have tried all of these and still having the problem:
1- Rebooting
2- Scanning for viruses
3- Running SFC /scannow tool
4- Updating/re-installing graphics card driver
5- Windows repair from disk

- When I tried to setup a new copy of windows, I could not because it does not show me the message of "Press any key to continue" but only a blinking white dash then goes to start windows on hard drive. AND YES !, I set the boot to CD drive.

Please answer if you could solve this problem, otherwise do not bother to even reply with irrelevant posts.

Answer:No start menu, text or icons names are showing after uninstalling IE9

So, number 5 in your list hasn't been completed because the disk is not recognized or did the repair fail and now you want to reinstall the OS?
