i absolutely hate winrar, i can't figure out

Question: i absolutely hate winrar, i can't figure out

i don't understand enough about the purpose of it to ask any intelligent question other than i have files i've been trying for f---ing days to open and get a bunch of letters and hieroglyphics futher sucking the life out of me. it's so complicated i have no hope of understanding what, how or why my complicated life needs any more crap cluttering up my space. i just want to be able to read the attachments to my emails. i'm tired of everyone treating me like i'm stupid and they have a target to focus mean remarks on. everyone assumes that everyone else knows about computers when they don't. belittling and disparaging people with little or no experience or instruction has no purpose. no one is born with that kind of knowledge. i need help.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: i absolutely hate winrar, i can't figure out

Win RAR is a compression program similar to Winzip. So to shrink down a large file it is compressed and given the extension .rar so the file you are attempting to open must have a .rar extension "my file.rar" If Winrar is installed, when you double click on the file it should uncompress it and show you the contents of the file. You need a compatible winrar version and in some cases the files are split which would be difficult for you the novice to splice back together the first I hope its not a split. Do you know what is supposed to be in it, a program, do you know. Does the file end in .rar? Yes it can be frustrating, sorry you got some nasty tech talk, some folks assume more than they should, it's hard to judge.

Seriously. From everything I'd seen, I didn't think it was going to be much good but I decided to install it and give it a whirl before making my mind up. So I bought a used tablet from eBay and installed it yesterday, only to discover it is so much worse than I thought it would be. OK, it's only been 36 hours or so but I haven't found so much as a single thing about it that feels better than Windows 8. It is all worse. Terrible, even.
Firstly, they seem to have completely destroyed the tablet experience. And I mean completely destroyed. When you open an app in landscape mode and turn the tablet into a portrait orientation, the app only takes up the top half of the screen and you can't reach the maximise/restore button in the top-right corner. You have to restart the app to get it back to full screen. Interestingly, when you go the other way, you can hit the maximise button and it will go properly full-screen and behave normally from that point on but that is hardly a great UX. I also hate vertical scrolling in the Start Menu and in apps, although that's just a personal preference, I suppose. But what is a real issue is not knowing where the scrolling area on the Start Menu starts. In portrait mode the dead area is almost half the width of the screen. Again, it is extremely poor UX design and frustrating as hell to use.
Getting rid of the Charms Bar, which was beautifully designed, and replacing it with the ugly and oversized Notification Centre is also a bad choice, especial... Read more

Microsoft is still putting the pieces together, why do you think that there are so many disclaimers as you go to download the preview???

Just a little vent, short and sweet. I`ve used Firefox since it came out years ago, and never once disliked it. This afternoon, I let Firefox update, I absolutely hate it now. After spending some time just trying to understand how to use it/interface, I went straight to add/remove programs and removed it from my system.

If I didn't add this update, I'd get no further updates, so I jumped at it, after having no issues on my Tablet.
But my dual monitor desktop setup took a big beating. No longer does it recognize my blu ray disc. Even if I put music cd in it. To rip music. And I have to RIP cd's as xbox Music is randomly deleting my music on my Windows Home Server. Telling me I Don't have music, that Zune or Windows Media Player says I do have on network.
But the WORST feature to me is closing a "modern" app only to get shown back to the desktop. Really? I hate the Desktop. I want to USE the start screen. As my START screen. If I close a modern app, it's because I'm done with it, not because I want my desktop. I have two monitors, one in the Modern World, and one in the stone ages, of the Desktop. So, I can only use Windows Media Center (yes, I love my cablecard tv tuner) and it only works on a desktop. Yet all the other stuff I want in the Modern World. And I'm already tired of having it go back to the desktop. Even after I fixed it booting to the desktop, and unchecking that default (Aren't options about giving us OPTIONS instead of thinking for ME), but now everytime I close the ONLY modern app open, I get the desktop. So, I have to leave some modern app, running which I don't need, only to get the start screen.

Answer:Absolutely hate Update 1 to Windows8.1 on a desktop

It was driving me crazy too. But I have a solution for you..... (as I posted on another thread here)
In Desktop....right click/long tap on' Properties' the 'Taskbar Tab', uncheck, 'Show Windows Store apps on the taskbar'. That's it. Now when you close a Start screen app it will return you to the Start screen....not the Desktop. You do lose the new Update 1 functionality of being able to 'show' apps on the taskbar in the desktop mode....but you can still pin them there if you desire.
Hope this helps

I bought a Western Digital 500GB USB hard drive, "PASSPORT" to use for backup storage etc.  When I plugged it in, the computer loaded the drivers.  It does not show up on the "COMPUTER" window along with the other drives.   But it does show up in the  "DEVICES AND PRINTERS" window as another device along with my monitor and camera.   The device manager shows it as another drive and that "This device is working properly".  However I can't open it or load anything into it.  Am I missing something here??    Can anyone give me any advice as to what to do?      Thanks for reading this.  J

Answer:I hate showing my ignorance but: I can't figure out how to use my external HD

If you dont have any data stored to it yet... go to Disk Management and you should see it there possibly with no partition created. Create a new partition and format the partition ( which usually happens after the partition  creation by windows ). Now a drive letter will be automatically assigned and you should use it without any problems.***Note: If this is a smaller 2.5" drive that is powered off of the same USB cable that it communicates on you could be dealing with insuficient power from the USB port to the drive. If this is the case, you need to add a powered USB HUB or if this drive has a way to power it from wall power, use the power adapter that came with it to power it vs using USB power source. I have seen some laptops unable to power external 2.5" drives and require a powered USB HUB or wall power via the power adapter that came with it optional.

I want to upload a video to a website, and it only allows 100mb per file. I want to archive a 431 mb file into the smallest number of files. The instructions for multi-part archiving is over my head and I can't figure out what to do.

I downloaded Farcry off usenet the other day. It comes in a *.rar file that's 74 pieces (.rar, .r00, .r01...... .r72) When I try to open the .rar file, it will show the *.iso in there, and it shows that that portion of the file is a certain size (~50 MB) and the other rar files (.r00-.r71) are around 70 MB... then the last one is around 48 MB (.r72)

When I look at the properties of the file (just .rar), it will show the size of the .rar file (~50 MB), and then the size of the entire .iso (~3.5 GB) and the compression ratio says 1%

when I try to extract the file, it will pop-up that little error log box and gives me 2 errors... I can't remember the first... I believe it's insignificant, and the second one says "file does not exist" or "no such file" or something... and whether I try to drag and drop it into windows, or select extract to: or whatever I try, I get the same error....

I tried to repair the .rar file, too using the winrar repair function... it sat there for about 1 minute, then I tried to do it again, with the same results.... anyone have any input on this?

Answer:extracting spanned winrar file w/winrar - have you had problems?

Check for PAR files from where you downloaded it.

Also check for an .sfv this will check each files CRC for errors. I think the program i used to use was called EasySFV.

the PAR files will repair your corrupt/missing files.

I got nervous after 3 failed attempts to install the new preview, so I pulled all my Intel C600 HD controller drivers and let Windows install native drivers (read it on another forum). Guess what? It did not do squat. Hate it!

So now I'm thinking what if I have a hardware issue? I need to be sure so I did a Factory Refresh on my Win 8 installation. Run thru the update hoops again and the preview took, Yea! Love it!

But let's not celebrate yet folks. All my programs are now gone. MS said it would leave Windows apps alone and kill the 3rd party stuff. So I guess MS Office Enterprise is 3rd party because it's GONE! Hate it.

Spent hours rebuilding my programs (Steam games were a real joy with over 20 to download again, Thank god for 40 Meg DSL)

Got Chrome installed again and did a test drive with my wife's corporate email, and it works! Never worked with Windows 8. Love it again!

Then I ran Just Cause 2 to run the benchmark program and the video strobes like I have it in 3D mode (non 3D monitor) Hate it again.

I had this problem before in Win 8 but it somehow went away. Now it's back again. I thought nVidia might be trying to double the refresh rate for 3d, so I uninstalled all nVidia 3d drivers, but it did not help.

I'll keep trying until I figure it out, but I like to know what other are experiencing with this upgrade; Please share good or bad.

Answer:Windows 8.1 Preview; I hate it - I love it - I hate it.

I think the Refresh probably says that it will leave Windows Store apps alone. Windows Store apps being the full-screen 'Metro' apps but not 'Desktop' apps like MS Office.

However for future reference, if you've got your PC in a state where you like it, you can create your own Custom Refresh image which should keep apps that you've installed. Note that you will still lose quite a lot of settings when you use it to restore though.

Greetings Geeks -

I visit and download Winrar. Avira immediately detects the file as adware. I had Panda running for previous installs of Win 8, and it did not detect it. I am convinced that I twice installed the Astromedia hijacker as a result.

Another poster suggested my IP may have been hijacked, but I am pretty sure that is not the case. I am thinking of downloading the file from to a laptop, and trying to run it from there.

So, any idea what is going on? Is it a false positive? Is there a safe alternative for .rar files?

Thanks for any help.

Answer:Avira Detects Winrar as Adware ?

This is more of a topic for the Software Forum not the Malware Forum. But in short yes WinRar is adware supported like thousands of other programs. WinRar site clearly states the below downloader uses a smart installer that will manage the installation of your selected software. In addition to managing the installation of your selected software, the installer will make recommendations for additional free software that you may be interested in. Additional software may include toolbars, browser add-ons, game applications, anti-virus applications, and other types of applications. You are not required to install any additional software to receive your selected software. You can completely remove the program at any time in Windows' Add/Remove ProgramsClick to expand...

If you want a good free program to handle all kinds of compression formats then try 7zip. See the below link:

Nothing absolutely needs to be on the SSD. But whatever you do put on the SSD will improve your system performance. I try to load all applications and games to my SSD. I only use my spinner to store data files. This way, with imaging, all I need to image is my C drive and I have a fully working system again. If you split some apps out to D, without having an image of the D drive, you won't have a fully working system.

I purchased my Dell computer (version 2002) back in July with Windows XP Home Edition included. My computer was getting to be a disaster with how slow and noisy it was. I called technical support to see how to completely restart my whole computer to have it run like it did when it was bran new.

Everything on my computer works smooth and properly just the way I wanted it to be.

I have only one problem now and it's really frustrating.... there's absolutely no sound!

I tried everything. I tried searching for my solution on Google for hours. I tried the computer troubleshoot thing, and did absolutely nothing. I tried re-plugging my speakers, and that wasn't it. I tried turning up the volume to the max on both my computer as well as speakers.... so it has nothing to do with the sound.

However, under devices for the sound, I went to the properties for "Multimedia Audio Controller" and showed the program for it is not installed. After completely restarting Windows XP Home Edition, you'd think that any software provided in the CD (if any is needed) it would've installed it in the first place.

I tried providing as much information as possible so any type of help or comments would be appreciated greatly.

Thank you.

Answer:Absolutely no sound after....

Can't say for sure how Dell does things (their XP disks are not the same as what you buy in a store) however, generally the sound/audio drivers are on a separate CD, and need to be installed after the XP installation is done.

My guess is that you can fix this problem easily by locating either the disk and running the sound driver installation program from that, or you can find the drivers (hopefully in an executable program) from the sound-card manufacturer's web-site.

If you can't find the audio CD, a call to Dell should give you clear guidance, if it's going to be free that's what I would recommend.

If you are out of warranty, you are going to need to identify the sound card in order to find the drivers.

I've tried system restore and checked all the sound settings and nothing.

Greetings, and welcome to TSF!

Please download Ad-aware at and install it if you don't have it already. Make sure it's the newest version and check for any updates before running it. Also go to to download the plug-in for fixing VX2 variants. To run this tool, go into Ad-aware->Add-ons and select VX2 Cleaner. Then click Run Tool and OK to start it. If it's clean, it will say Status System Clean. Otherwise, you will have to click on the Clean button to remove the VX2 infection. Also make sure to customize the settings in Ad-aware at for better scan results. Run the scan and fix everything that it finds.

Download and install Spybot S&D Run Spybot and click on the 'Search for Updates' button. Install any updates that are available.

Now click Mode menu and choose 'Advanced Mode'. Next click on Immunize to your left. Click the Immunize button (green cross) on top to Immunize your computer - you should do this each time there is an update. Now go to Tools->Resident and make sure that TeaTimer is checked. What this will do is monitor any system/registry changes and will ask you for permission to change any of these settings.

OK so I've updated my legitimate Windows 8 Pro to Windows 8.1 through the store. Great.
Except I don't like upgrades.
So I wanted to get an ISO to make a clean install. Nope, can't do that (and I've tried all I found with the online installer and such and all I get is the bloody "Can't connect right now").
So I thought I'd just refresh my PC after upgrading it. Nope, that won't work either because it'll bring me back to Windows 8.
So basically the only way I can do a fresh install is to install Windows 8 and then upgrade through the store?? This is absurd!
Plus, at work, I have to download an upgrade on every PC that has Windows 8. Every PC. So if I have 10 PCs I have to use 35 GB of bandwidth just for the upgrade process!
If Microsoft wants businesses to adopt Windows 8 (or 8.1 now) shouldn't they make it easier for IT's. Not all IT's are MSDN subscribers! Some IT's (like me) don't need MSDN except now to get this update.
This is ludicrous!
I'm really really mad at them right now.
Plus, you know on a Mac? When you upgrade say from OSX 10.8 to OSX 10.9 through their app store, it puts an installer somewhere on your hard drive. So if you want to reinstall you can without having to install all the versions of OSX beginning at 10.0!
Now if I'm wrong and there is a way, then if someone can tell me, I'd appreciate it. But I've been searching and trying since yesterday (and I'm not downloading the RTM from any illegal source) and NOTHING works.
Why can't Microsoft make our lives e... Read more

Answer:This is absolutely ludicrous!

The only way I can think of is a torrent sorry! But when you do upgrade from a fresh install of win 8 be sure to make a system image straight away, then if you want to "refresh" you can just use the image and it's a lot faster too !! Hope this helps

I'm not sure when this started (it was awhile back) but I have absolutely no sound at all. The computer acts like nothing is wrong, yet certain programs, iTunes, for example, won't play because no sound comes out. Headphones don't work either, so something is definitely wrong.

My computer is running Windows XP and recently, all audio has stopped playing. I have checked the system volume and tried different headphones, but there still isn't any sound from itunes, internet, system sounds. Do you have any solutions?

Answer:absolutely no sound

Hi and welcome to TSG.

It could be corrupt or missing sound drivers.

Open the Windows Device Manager.
Verify there are no conflicts or errors listed anywhere in Device Manager.
Are there any yellow ?s or !s
Verify that your "Sound, video and game controllers" category is listed.

Oh my goodness. After returning from a nice vacation I came back only to find my computer in spyware and general virus ruins.

First off, I'm running AVG, Spybot search and destroyer, and Adaware.
Now though, my AIM has a kernel32 error msg everytime I attempt to log on. And everyone knows aol is essential to anyone's social life.
I cant open "search" or the control panel.
I disabled every startup item but the basics, but everytime I reboot there are over 50 applications running. A friend and I have been working on it for the past two days, but nothing is getting accomplished. I really need some help on this. Thanks a ton.

iexplore.exe is taking up all the memory space when I check window task manager. And I've read the previous post and it told me I needed to make this new file called hijack in my directory, but I don't even know what a directory is, so I don't know how to create a new file there. Any kind of help here would be fabolous.

Answer:Absolutely clueless

Create a directory on your hardrive, to save HijackThis.exe, called c:\hijackthis. This is a mandatory step, for the backup and restore functions, of HijackThis, to be able to work.Download the latest version, from here.Read the pinned post in the HJT forum, hereThen, run a log, and post it in the HJT forum. I was introduced to... something... and I just can't get rid of it.

The file is named id50_32.dll, at 408 kb under windows\system32\
Now it is constantly making popups, and on every reboot, it seems to create a duplicate of itself under a random name (regardless whether or not it was disturbed).

Thing is, Spybot, Hijack This, AdAware all can't detect it. I tried to KillBox it, but it can only get rid of the duplicates (and only on a reboot), but not the original. I also can't get rid of it under SafeMode.

I also tried to look at the file with notepad to find some sort of clue, but it won't allow it because it is currently running.

I also tried to find instances of it in the registry. The only single instance I found that calls to the file was under:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINES\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\Notify\CSCSettings\DllName (a REG_SZ).

And now, I'm totally lost. Anyone have any ideas?

Actually, upon updating again, "Hijack This" found it under

O20 - Winlogon Notify: Uninstall - C:\Windows\System32\id50_32.dll

So, at the very least, I know that this .dll starts the second my computer starts. However, the "delete file on reboot" still doesn't work. And the procedure to restart that computer resulted in 3 more undeletable .dll's.

Other than KillBox and Hijack This, anyone else knows any possible way I can get rid of this?

Answer:Absolutely undeletable???

Dear friends,

Is ups compulsory for a desktop pc? If power goes out and the pc not shut down properly, will this affect the components of the pc? If power goes out frequently (e.g. 1-4 times a day), provided that the said pc does not have ups or has one with insufficient backup for the pc (i.e., dying battery) to be shut down properly, will this impose adverse affects on the components (i.e. hardware - motherboard, processor, hdd etc) of the pc? Will the pc components die out quickly and malfunction? Will this affect the overall performance of the pc?

Is there any ups alternative? Is there any electrical device that could be used to protect pc from power surge, high/low voltage and other possible electrical/power problems?

Thanks in advance.

I'm looking at the mac interface and man it looks nice. I know for Mac users they can use virtual pc for Macs to use windows but I don't think that you can use virtual pc for windows to use a Mac OS. I prob would never actually buy a Mac (unless PCs or windows become obsolete).

Good Morning All,

I have been trying for two straight days to rid my plagued system of malware. It all began with some sort of rogue spyware that installed itself and immediately began bombarding me with pop-ups and fake security alerts. I knew I had been infected with malware and was able to shut the processes down via task manager and uninstall them.

I rebooted my machine and the real trouble began. My desktop background went into an alert mode and "Total Security 2009" popped up and ran a fake scan. Additionally, it disabled my antivirus, firewall, and automatic updates. The malware also was able to disable any way of stopping it. I tried running task manager and it would instantly disappear. I tried running msconfig, to see if I could prevent it from booting on next start-up and work to get rid of it but it would not pop-up. I tried to use regedit but I was told an admin disabled the service. I tried gpedit to edit permissions but it did not pop-up.

My next move was to use limited internet access to download the most common antivirus and malware removal softwares. I tried Malwarebytes. It installed, began a scan and disappeared. After a reboot, it would not start and clicking the .exe in the program files folder told me I did not have permissions. This same process occured with Norton Internet Security 2009, Avast Professional, AVG Professional, Spybot, Spysweeper, and Bitdefender. The only program that did run was Spyware Doctor. The program found traces, c... Read more

I hope someone will be able to help me.

I have replaced a screen on my laptop (Toshiba Satellite U500). I have done this on other computers without problems. This time I am afraid I might have damaged the wires as I cannot get the screen to work. The external monitor goes blank when connected (a change from "Check Signal Cable" message it gives me when not connected) so, obviously, something is working.

Could anyone suggest a guide or a procedure to follow to locate the problem?

Answer:Absolutely no screen

Have you checked
Cable at rear of screen is fully inserted
Same on motherboard
Tried pressing FN + F5 to see if it switches to screen , or, external (sometimes need to hold down keys as system starts.
Have you checked the invertor cables ( INPUT POWER, AND OUTPUT TO SCREEN BACKLIGHT)
Is there a small earth cable to the base/coming out of the screen cable, and if so, is it connected.
Can you see a very faint image, if you shine a torch to the screen
Have you tried the f6/f7 buttons to increase the screen brightness

I want to mention that I am a new member and rarely deal with internal compuuter if my actions seem ridiculous......

I recently clicked a link on the internet that installed a trojan virus (this is what the pop-up bubble tells me) simultaneously while installing "Virus Heat" -- without my permission. I immediately uninstalled the program and everything related that I could find.

My computer seemed to be running at the usual speed during this time, but I was receiving "anti virus" software pop ups and there were flashing icons on the taskbar (one was yellow triangle with an exclamation mark *i added the same icon to show you*, flashing; one was a shield flashing red with an x then yellow). Each icon displayed a different message. One notified me to remove a virus and to click the bubble (I think it was the triangle). When I clicked the bubble IE opened an ad page for downloading a virus cleaner...or something of the like. After that I would just click x to close the bubble and it just popped up again. I think the other bubble (shield) popped up to display the name of the virus -- [email protected] -- and, of course, encouraged me to run a program to remove it. I attempted to click that as well but led me to annoying ads and pop-ups.

I haven't had a virus since my old computer. This computer was received from the distributer with McAfee installed, but when it asked me to renew the anti-virus, I ignored it for months with no problem... Read more

So I opened my computer the other day and the sound was gone. I have an ASUS Notebook UX31A.

It says I have no audio devices installed. I checked device manager, there is not even a section dedicated to audio or whatever its called (Sound Games and controllers or something like that).

I went into admin tools and restarted Windows Audio. nothing. Plugged headphones into the audio jack and those weren't recognized either. My computer is basically disregarding the fact that sound is even a real thing.

I've looked at a billion forums now and nothing is working. I downloaded the latest Realtek audio drivers and extracted them from the zip folder, but beyond that, I don't know how I would use drivers to make sound appear.

I'm frustrated, and if somebody could help me get some sound I would appreciate it.

First, sorry about spelling, I'm bad at it.
OK, so whenever I click on "Hibernate" from the start menu, my computer goes on standby. Also my computer usually has the uncanny ability to Hibernate when its battery gets critical. Now it just goes on standby, and I lose my work.

Thank you for your help!

Answer:Absolutely NO Hibernate

Hibernate utilizes a disk file named hiberfil.sys placed on C. It's generally in the 3-4GB or larger range (depending on the amount of memory in your computer), and if you previously have hibernated successfully that file would have already been allocated from previous hibernations. But it may vary in size, so that its required size now is perhaps larger than it was previously.

Have you run out of space on C?
Have you changed video or updated video drivers recently? These are associated with the hibernation function.
Do you have a system restore point from a moment in time that you know you used to have working hibernation, that you can restore from to see if that fixes the problem?

More extreme, do you have a "system image" you can restore (first, preserving any recent data you don't want to lose in the process, to a second drive or backup you can later copy back from after the "system image" is restored)? Presumably, this system image was again taken at a moment in time when hibernation was working?
Obviously it's not clear yet whether the problem is a software or hardware issue, but certainly either of the above "restore" options from a previously working environment where hibernation was functional should return you to that state... if the current problem is a Windows or driver software cause. Presumably you would be back in business after the restore, and hibernation would be working again.

If it's really a hardware problem of ... Read more

The problem is that my computer is producing absolutely no audio like on youtube videos, music, even on start up, shut down, etc... i have also found that my computer has difficulty creating restore points, and also the fact that it can't use the windows update.

But the main problem is that I also can't follow the guide posted up which is supposed to be used to get the logs that are needed, as for the dds.scr it opens up for a few seconds with command prompt but it doesn't give me any logs/txt files, or whatever the thing is supposed to be as the resulting product. I have managed to print screen what comes up (not sure if its all of it since the writing comes up and closes very quick) here: ImageShack® - Online Photo and Video Hosting

So then i moved onto the gmer.exe but this also has a problem, where i can't even check/uncheck what was listed as shown here: ImageShack® - Online Photo and Video Hosting
(the check boxes are grey and i can't check them...)

*I do not have access to a windows installing disk, nor do i have access to a boot disk... I think i really need help...

Hi,...........hope that i can iron out the problem with uz,.. anyway here's my story:

i downloaded service pack 4 and then told to reboot,..... rebooted and the computer wouldnt load,......... it just kept booting to a point and then would shutdown and recycle . A friend of a friend took my pc away and has managed to get it up and running again,...with the help of his rebuild utility.

since i got it back,.... i now have a "c drive" and a "D drive".

all my old programs etc. have been wiped, and supposedly the only thing on my pc is the new Windows2000.

strange,.... because there is less space on my pc now than ever before.
my c drive is 58% full and my D drive(localdisk) is 81% full.

I still have programs to install like my norton and other gadgets and windows updates,..... so i wonder how my pc will cope?

i am getting constant freeze ups that require boot up and even then it may freeze before i try open anything. hmmmmm?????

my cpu usage is bobbling between 0% and 80% even when there are no apparent things running.

i have tried the spybot and hijack this and there really isnt anything there that needs attention as the pc has only been in action a few days.

any thoughts ?.................

p.s. sorry bout the long post - cheers Ron

I am wondering if anyone can help me please?
As i have a problem with my computer, and the company that made it have tried to help.
But, they just keep saying to re-install Windows XP and Windows 98SE, and at the moment i am finding it impossible.
A basic run down of what has happened is that i originally i had boot up problems with my Dual-Boot computer, and the company sent an engineer to change the motherboard for me to try to cure the problem.
This is when the real problems started for me.
And since then i have tried everything to try to install an operating system on my computer, but i just get error messages instead.

During the course of trying to sort this problem out, i have had to format the partitions that held my Windows 98SE and Windows XP Home systems.
That did not do any good, when i tried to re-install, and still i get the error messages, so i then had to remove all the partitions on the 80GB drive.
And then set them up again on the drive, this i did with Partition magic 7.0.
And when i tried to re-install Windows 98SE first onto the D:\ partition, i got the following:

When i tried to install Windows 98SE with the Boot floppy and the CD, all i got was an error message about "Error Loading User.exe".
When i tried to install with just the CD, all i got was a message about "Invalid System Disk Error".
It seems that i cannot install Windows 98SE onto the computer, to get back my Dual-Boot system i had before.

Also when i tried to install Wind... Read more

Hi TSG! Thanks very much for providing this forum.

I am experiencing an adware infestation the likes of which I have never seen. I bought a Dell Latitude laptop off eBay. It had Win2k installed. I'm not sure if it was already there or contained in something I installed, but an adbot got on my system that I cannot remove. It opens windows constantly, sometimes 4-5 per minute, and bombards me with endless ads. I tried all sorts of adware removers, including an automated one (can't remember name) that downloads all the most popular adware cleaners and runs them all. No luck. So I Ghosted the 2000 install to another partition and installed a fresh copy of XP. They're baaaack! I am at wit's end.

I'm living in a sharehouse and my mate's computer has been absolutely destroyed by this malware. Constant pop ups alt tabing him out of programs are driving him crazy, and they spawned from a bad trainer for a video game. I live at the seaside you see, and I live in a basement flat and I was mentioning to father over the telephone how bizarre it was that many people nowadays seem not to know where or what a ?basement? flat is and when the regular postman is not on the rounds I seem to get my neighbours mail through my letter box and they seem to get mine and I could tell by the tone of the old lady?s voice who lives on the top floor when she had telephoned me for the 7th time to come and collect my mail from her door mat because it once again had been incorrectly been posted through her letter box and she can?t walk down the 7 steps to my basement flat because she says her back is not too good that something had to be done. So father purchased for me a brass plaque sorted out that had ?Basement Flat? written on it with an arrow pointing to my front door so now hopefully the non regular post person, mini cabs drivers? and pizza? lads will know that I am not 50 or 50A but Basement Flat 50.I?m going to try my best to remove the seagull poo on Monday I shall let you know... Absolutely amazing, in less than 24 hours of me fixing up a rather smart looking brass plaque outside my home a seagull has managed to score a direct hit achieving an almost impossible shot and pooed on my brass plaque.I have wiped the streak of bird poo off with a damp cloth yet it seems to have turned the brass black beneath where the poo was. I would appreciate any help in knowing if this black mark can be removed from the brass plaque as now the whole thing looks rather scruffy to look at. Thanks for your time.

Recently got my system repaired with new motherboard. Everything works fine, the programs, internet but I can't hear no sound absolutely no sound. I'm using the on-board chipset from the motherboard. My speakers are working good; i've tested them by plugging them on zune. The system can play all media files without problem but I can't hear anything. I don't any error saying the system has a problem with the sound device or codec problem. The only thing that comes out from the speakers is the zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz sound like when something is on high voltage.

I've checked the “Sound and Audio Devices Properties”
- The “Volume Control” is ok
- The Mute checkbox is unchecked
- The onchipset sound device is selected for Default Device for both playback and recording
- The “Use only preferred devices” is unchecked

Control Panel/Device Manager/ Sound, Video and Game Controllers
- Sound Device working good, there is no conflict, device is enabled and used for Audio, MIDI Devices and Mixer.

Checked “dxdiag” /sound tab
- Everything seems to be working fine, “No Problems Found”
- I can't hear no sound when “Test DirectSound” although I do get the popup saying a sound was played.

Where can the problem be? Please help... I really miss my music. I am not def, for sure.

Hi there.Here's the thing:
I installed usb to pci card to my pc but xp does not detect anything.
I have onboard usb which works but i want to avail usb2,hence the card.
I have tried various bios options but no success.
Other pci cases work in the Same slots and this card works on other pc.
Device manager shows no exclamation mark or detection.
Am i missing something?
Amd duron 1.2
512mb ram

Answer:Absolutely no detection of usb pci card xp

are you sure that the pci form factor is supported on your motherboard; as it apears that you motherboard is a bit dated so may not work with pci 2 which is what the usb will most likely work on.

The other possibility is that you had some bad luck and bought a broken extension card as the only reason windows wouldn't detect the card is if not plged in or being acepted my the motherboard or the card its self is not working as it should

just got a new iPad, so of course you need itunes the first time to get it going, so dl'd itunes 64 bit for windows 7 & saved to desktop. decided it prob would be best to uninstall k-lite & quicktime alternative before installing itunes, so did that. ran installer & it fails "unable to open unknow registry key" blah blah. have uninstalled/reinstalled a half a dozen times, read M$ kb articles, apple's junk & googled til i'm blue in the face & still won't install for whatever reason. even turned off mbam, my a/v & turned off firewall & unplugged the internet to be safe, still no joy UGH! luckily i have an xp pro machine as well, so tried itunes on it, installed without a hitch, omg! got my iPad going fine, so figured was time to reinstall quicktime alternative & mpc home cinema & k-lite back on the w7 pc. now my saved movies won't play in mpc hc saying direct x runtime is outdated, so just for the heck of it reinstalled dx10 june 2010 to that folder & still won't work. when it rains it pours eh so in my infinite wisdom, figured i'd just do a restore to say week or 2 ago & thing's would be cherry. now system restore won't restore to a prev date, saying prob due to a/v running; so turned that off & tried 2 more times 2 diff dates. nope. just won't work. so, at this point, gonna lite a smoke, sit in my lounger with my iPad & wonder where in the world did it all go so wr... It was originally an external, and didn't show up all of the sudden. So took it apart and connected it to the sata and power cable, and nothing. not even in the bios. I have 1.5 TB of important stuff on there, is it damaged? It makes a power up sound when plugged it. I am really upset and will be grateful for any help. Thanks.

Answer:WD hdd powers on, but ABSOLUTELY no recognition anywhere

Right click computer, select manage, in the left column select disk management and see if it is shown there. If it is and is without a drive letter, in the lower part of the screeen right click the drive, select change drive letter or path, next screen select add and give it a drive letter. It will then show in explorer. If during this process it wants to format the drive, do not do it. You will lose everything on it.

Hello. This is my first post ever so i'll try to keep this pretty basic.I just received a 4 year old laptop. Its not great but it was originally Windows 7 and i have now upgraded it to 8.1. it has 2.23 gigahertz dual core processor and 4 gigs or ram. Its decently fast. I have already wiped all malicious programs from the laptop I.E. virus ect. But no games will launch. I have multiple copies of games that i know work fine but still everything fails to launch or produce a form of error code. Some games simply do not respond when i right click the application and attempt to open. And other games will just pop up an unrelatable error code. I have spent 48 hours trying to fix this myself. I even went to the length of going into command prompy and running the sfc /send Command line. Not that i know what that is or does but it wasnt detrimental but also didnt work. Please respond.

Answer:Absolutely no game will launch.

I'm absolutely hopeless at computers when it comes to all this technicality. So my screen sometimes comes up with a blue screen and white writing.
I've asked a few friends and most of them tell me it's either hardware/drivers...etc. How do I actually tell what is wrong with my computer? I've heard people say that there is a way to read what's wrong with the computer, how do I do that?

When I get back onto the computer a grey box with error signatures or something pop up saying:

BCCode: 8086 BCP1-4: 00000000 OSVer: 5_1_2600 SP: 3_0 Product: 256_1

Help please? Sorry if this is a really silly question btw.

OS: XP Home 5.1
I stumbled onto the net user command in CMD and found someone had changed the default setting of requiring a password to logon to my account. I've had some issues with roommates and such gaining access to my laptop. So I read what I could in the help file concerning all accounts and unactivated all but 2 accounts, mine and a limited user account. so there is no Help Assistant or built in Administrator account I can log into.
I recently was trying to hook up to a WIFI connection with a network card and was having trouble bringing up internet explorer, so I went into CMD to activate a different Administrator account to see if maybe it was my settings, anyway when I tried to activate that account, I recieved "Command completed successfully" but when I brought the user info up it said it still wasn't active. I repeated the same thing 2 or 3 more times, with the same result. I then went ahead and changed the password on that account thinking that might do something, but after I changed the password, I brought up the user info again, the blue error screen came up and it rebooted. When the windows classic logon screen came up, I tried to logon with my password and it tells me that it's incorrect. What programs are absolutely necessary on start up? The reason I ask is because after I changed my AV program, my computer takes much longer to start up (this is after I enter my password at the welcome page). My Dell Inspiron 14 laptop came with McAfee. After the 30 day trial was over, I installed Bitdefender Internet Security 2010.

Now with Bitdefender installed, the computer takes a pretty long time to load up after I enter the password for my account (at the welcome page).

Below are the list of programs currently running at startup (from MSCONFIG). Is running Bitdefender a must? What happens if I choose not to run it on startup? Will I still have the firewall/antivirus protection if I don't run it at start up?

Additionally, do you guys see a program that isn't necessary at startup?

Answer:What programs are absolutely necessary on start up?

If you don't let BitDefender run on startup, you will not get real-time protection. You will need to manually start the program every time you boot.

If BitDefender is causing you problems, try switching to another program. I recommend Microsoft Security Essentials because it is fast, and doesn't effect boot times much.

As for unnecessary startup items, I'd say disable that "Registry Sha..." second to the bottom. The items are there just to make loading times faster, but at the expense of a longer boot time.

If you don't use that program much, disable the startup item.

OKay, here is the problem. I built my system about seven months ago and it has ran flawlessly for six of them. Now, windows is rebooting on me. Seems to happen mostly when running Yahoo Messenger or, for some reason, whenever I run Norton's Antivirus. I can get through the full system scan about 50% of the time. When I do manage to get through it all. It says that my system is virus-free. There have been some other strange occurences within the last few weeks. Once, I started my system and it automatically directed me to the BIOS saying that the processor settings had been changed to incorrect ones. It had my CPU (AMD 1800+ XP) running at 1100 mhz instead of the regular 1533. About 50% of the time, when I start windows, it gives me an error saying that the Norton's Anti-Virus driver couldn't be loaded. I have gotten blue screens like KMODE_UNHANDLED_EXCEPTION or somesuch and also CONFIG_INITIALIZATION_FAILED. Now, I recognize that I know just enough about computers to get myself in trouble. But I did check out the Microsoft IT site and the "golden" advice they offered for the second error was to reinstall windows. Which I did. But the problems continue. I have checked the event viewer and I really don't know if the bugchecks that it lists can tell me anything. But a search on the IT website brought up matches saying that some errors were DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL...or something like that...and also that I had a problem with my NTFS. As I said... Answer:Windows rebooting. I know absolutely nothing.

There are strict procedures to follow. If you think that you have a virus, go to the our security section and follows those procedures. Assistance out side the Security section on these matters is not permitted,

Click here to start the process but please do not make a dramatic title to the thread. Read the procedures very carefully and follow them to the letter.

There are many other folk who are in a similar position and you may have to join the queue.

I have a Dell Studio 540 and am running windows 7 home premium. (I don't know if this is necessarily a windows 7 problem but I didn't know where else to post this so..)

I turned my computer on this morning and a pop up box came up saying "There was a problem starting jrnqp.dll...The specific module could not be found." (Which has been happening for a while now but hasn't had a noticeable effect on my computer until now.) I pressed ok and went to open up firefox and all I got was a blank page that said untitled even though google was in the url. I then noticed that nothing on my google desktop was working either and itunes had popped up saying that bonjour is no longer working. I also cannot save any files.

Since then I checked my laptop to see if I could narrow down the problem but the laptop worked fine. I also restarted my computer a few times and looked up the .dll file that I was missing to see if I could download that to fix it but I couldn't find it. I don't know if the missing .dll file has anything to do with the internet problem though.

Thanks in advance.

Computer is Dell Dimension 2350 running Win XP Home .

When browsing the Internet suddenly the mouse goes mad it charges all over the screen on its own I cannot control it.

Then The Start menu opens up on its own, then various programmes start to open up on their own. They just keep opening and opening .

The only way I can get this palaaver to stop is to press control alt delete
Then I close the programmes one by one through the task master.
All the cables and connectors have been checked out.

Today I re formatted the disk drive C and reloaded windows XP from scratch.
Am I correct in assuming that reformatting the hard disk would get rid of any virus/malware/spyware if there were any on the disk?

Ad aware
VV Cleaner

All been downloaded and installed .

Check done for Virus / Malware/Spyware and that revealed nothing

The same palaaver started again after the complete clean reinstall!

Has anyone got some idea what might be wrong?

This is driving me crazy - I am sure there must be a simple answer !

Awaiting some hopeful leads !

Thank you

Hi, this is my first post and I do this because I have no ideas anymore how to solve my problem. Some time ago I installed a game(Wesnoth) on my computer and for that time since I have no sound. I have tried to update my sound driver, reinstall it, use older drivers(cause maybe they work) and so on. Devices say that driver is working and up do date, nothing is muted and I have checked all my hardware for misconfiguration. When I want to play test tone on computer it tells that playing test tone failed, no audio system show also no "waves". When I try do play music in Winamp it gives "NullSoft DirectSound Output v2.6(d) error"-Bad DirectSounddriver.
I have Windows 7 and realtek high audio device sound driver (ver. R2.56)/card.
I thank for all help.

Hi and Welcome to TSF

Your really infected and the cause is YOU HAVE NO SECURITY programs and your OS and IE are not patched I'm not trying to RAG on you...but point out this PC should not have net access unless it's protected somewhat and this PC is not! Anyway lets start with some tools...

Before attacking an adware/spyware problem with hijackthis make sure you have already run ad-aware SE with VX2 add-on cleaner, Spybot Search & Destroy (with updated database) and CWShredder as these programs will clean a lot of the crap out first. All links to programs are in my signature.

Run all those!!

If you have a highspeed connection please Run an online virus scan from TrendMicro Please select the ?autoclean? option when prompted to do so.

Then Run these uninstallers..

Look2 Me uninstaller
IGN Keyword Uninstaller
ClearSearch Uninstaller

Run this removal tool for that desktop message...WARNING Desktop Fix..

Now Download Cleanup install and run the program. When it's done with it's scan it will ask you to reboot/logoff...say NO and proceed below.

You have the Peper infection. Download PeperUninstall. Make sure you are connected online to run this program. Run it once and reboot. Then run it again for the second time. Downl... Read more

Hello- I am in need of some assistance with this Bleeping CPU. I had previously posted before, and was helped by Aura (Yoan). As he is currently unavailable, I'm reaching out. A quick background, I've been battling this infection for months to no avail. After using BitDefender rescue, 4 infections were found. I have reinstalled Windows too many times to count. Yoan informed me that these were probably false positives from using livecd. At one point, i had the machine at a clean install with no problems. however, when I tried to recover some photos from an external hdd, the infection came back. At one time, I had some (believe it or not) WAREZ from 2012 that was on that drive. I must have activated the infection when I tried to restore the photos. Which brings me to today. I had panicked the other day, and deleted my boot files. I couldn't even reinstall using my win7 disk. I happened to have an old win 7 enterprise that I installed to get me back on the machine. When I went to install my paid copy, I had to copy the DVD to USB for it to work. I just upgraded to Windows 10, and did all updates. The only software I installed was Bitdefender 2017 trial, and chrome. My last update installed the nvidia drivers, then afepter reset, it happened again. CPU running very slow, I went to safe mode, downloaded gmer, and it showed rootkit/malware crss.exe. So what do I need to do?

Answer:Still infected, absolutely frustrated!!!

This happens randomly, and is only resolved if I reboot my computer a bunch of times. What happens is, everything becomes sluggish and laggy. My CPU usage spikes up for no reason, and my FPS in games are low. Videos also become pixelated sometimes. As far as I know, this only occurs after booting up the PC. If the PC has been on, I don't believe it will happen. But once it does happen, it's like that till I restart a ton of times. I'm like 99 percent sure it isn't malware, I've run scans with Kaspersky Total Security 2016. Though what I do find weird is when the CPU usage spikes to 100, there are no procces using any usage at all really.Videos of it happening: how everything is stuttering/lagging, the YouTube video is becoming distorted, and my CPU usage is at 99 percent)Specs are:i7 4770kGTX 980tiAsus Z97-ARTwo SSD's and One HDD16GB RAM

Hello! It has been awhile since I have had to ask for help.....but this time it is for my girlfriend. I went to her place because she told me she could not access the internet at all. I checked and sure enough no go....I even did a system restore and what I got was a quick window that had this (it is all that I could copy via camera phone)
object: C:/systemvolumeinformation/_restore{106CF321-99A3-4E3A-9103-18D0276069A99{RP154/AOX20497 and I did try to google it when I got home and nothing. She has a anti-virus program that searches for malware and virus and found nothing. Can you give me some insight as to go about cleaning her computer up if I cant get on the internet? I was going to install "System Mechanic" on her computer and see what it found. Any and all help would be greatly appreciated!! Thank you in advance. KathyM

Answer:Absolutely no Internet Access

At this point you first need to make sure you have the network connection setup properly. Check to make sure that the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) settings are set to Obtain an IP Address automatically and that Obtain DNS server address is also set to automatic. If you don't understand this, then you should start in the Networking Forum or just refer to this:

Installing System Mechanic would not be my first, second, third or fourth choice but that's up to you.

I think the title and my first line explain what I don't know enough about. There are a huge amount of startups on my Win 8 system and I've been advised by my computer to get rid of some of them. Problem is it just showed up once and isn't in my Action Center. However, listed below are all the startups.

Answer:Startup Programs - Which ones are absolutely necessary

Hi Wynona, HERE is the list of Windows 8.1 services and suggested tweaking. Regarding the Startup items you're listing, you can safely disable all of those from startup without crippling the OS. They are all 3rd party. You have to evaluate what impact it'll have for those specific programs, but I don't see a reason to keep them loading during startup.

My other laptop (Windows XP) has recently acquired some viruses. When it starts up, I get 3 OS options when it should only load straight into Windows XP. I have not installed these other OSs. I get redirected whenever I click on a link in Google. I have recitfied it many times, but it keeps happening. And MSE keeps finding tojans in it's prelim but can't finish it's full scan and sometimes can't update. I've checked with Malwarebytes and it says that the laptop is clear.
I've tried running through the Anti-Malware thread at the beginning of the forum but my laptop crashes before I get past step 4 (I think). Any suggestions?

Answer:Laptop absolutely riddled...

First, try running this:
TDSSkiller - How to run

Then try doing the rest of the R&R. If you have to, you can try doing them in safe mode. But we really need to see the logs, esp. the C:\ -- from running C:\MGTools.exe.

Hey guys. I am losing my mind here, so I figured I would post in a forum and see if anyone could help me. I don't know how to explain the problem other than 2 laptops in my house connect fine to our wireless router (A Linksys WRT54G), but my desktop does not. I just bought a new wireless adapter for it today (An Airlink 300N USB adapter) and I am getting nothing. Well...let me modify that- I am getting something. The icon in the system tray says "Signal Strentgh- Excellent. Status- Connected". Well, no, that cannot be right because I get a Server Not Found message when I try to connect.

Let me say that I have been all over the interwebs trying to find out what to do. I most recently changed the TCP settings from Obtain Automatically to a static address, which I got by accessing the router via my laptop. Honestly, I have no idea what I am even talking about, I am just doing things on a whim. Basically, I should be able to connect but cannot, and I am really not pleased.

This computer was online a few months ago with the old adapter. That stopped working, I bought a new adapter, and still nothing. I am no genius with computers but I can follow instructions well, so I am hoping someone has some ideas. Thanks so much for all your help.

Answer:printer going absolutely insane

That is an extremely old version of HJT ... you need to download the latest (version 1.99)

The problem you describe indicates that the printer has corrupted drivers, or has "lost" it's driver or has the wrong driver.

Delete the printer, reload the driver.

I am desperate for help at this point, anyone who can offer any assistance would be a god send. I will give as much info as i can and would be happy to give any other info i can access/record.
Here is my story:
internet worked perfectly for years. one day our internet is shut down for maintenance by our isp (cox).
since then, for at least three months now, our internet has been very unstable and sometimes shuts down completely. we have called cox over 20 times (probably over 30, with 2 level 2 tech calls), had at least 5 internet technicians come to our house, and bought a new 350$ router and 100$ modem to try and fix this.
this instability happens to every computer and streaming device in our house, including my computer which is in through ethernet cable-though its a much bigger issue for me since i play competitive video games where a 5 second disconnection can spell a loss, let alone a 3 minute outage.

with the exception of one call where the person said they saw issues with our line, cox repeatedly says there is nothing wrong with our connection and just resets our modem (which is starting to get me very angry that they won't even listen to me, just reset modem and say its fixed now). i am not tech savy at all, but with the assistance of some others i have gathered logs and run tracer routes.

some of my logs show packet loss:
i also have logs that don't sho... Read more

Hi There,

I hope someone can help.

My son's PC failed so it was time to upgrade.
I bought a new Gigabyte GA-MA69VM-S2 motherboard, new AMD Athlon 64 X2 4000+ Dual-Core Processor, new Patriot 2G SL DDR2 Ram and a new Power Supply. I'm using the old case.

I've been out of the hardware upgrade process for a little while but there certainly didn't seem to be anything out of the ordinary. Turned on the power and turned on the PC and NOTHING. Nothing seems to work, no power seems to be active and I'm stumped as to what to do next.

My case doesn't have a CI (Chassis Intrusion) or CLR_CMOS (Clear CMOS) connection and apart from those 2 minor omissions, everything seems normal.

Does anyone have any suggestions on this one?

Answer:absolutely nothing works - this is weird

Here are few things to check:

Motherboard shorting to case. Try running the system with the motherboard outside the case.

Processor installed incorrectly or wrong type for motherboard

All power supply cables to the motherboard not connected or seated

Case Power Switch not connected to the proper pins on the motherboards front panel header

Hi, I'm new to this forum having got my new vista machine several months ago. The problem is this: I cannot get my 64 bit vista machine to connect to a printer connected to my 32 bit XP machine. I have read all kinds of advice on various forums and the microsoft support site but nothing seems to work. Both computers have been networked for some time, I am able to share files and folders, both computers see the other in their network folder. I have pinged the printer, the other computer back and forth and everything is OK. I can see the network printer connected to the host computer but when I try to connect, I get the message that the server does not have the correct driver(s) installed. The printer prints fine from the XP machine. When I tried to install the drivers on the Vista machine I was told by HP that they do not have a full version of the drivers for my 64 bit macnhine but could only provide basic drivers which I downloaded and installed. I have tried creating a new port with the host computer name and printer name but all I get is the network path cannot be found. I have followed some of the suggestions for similiar problems on this site where people have had success but those ideas just don't work. The printer is a HP Photosmart 7960 which I have had for several years. Right now I am at my wits end and ready to go back and start over, maybe I missed something minor. If anyone on this site has any suggestions or ideas I would be willing to try anything.

Answer:Absolutely cannot share printer

Is it possible to connect the printer to the Vista machine?

I have a similar situation in that my Epson printer has the driver in the firmware. When connected it automatically load the Vista driver. If I connect it to my Vista64 PC, I can share it over the Lan. But if I connect it to my Windows7 PC, it will only print locally. There is no driver to download. If you can't get it to work connected to the Vista PC you may have to investigate one of those network doodads that lets you share on your network directly. Plugs into the switch/router/gizmo/whatever.

Sure, yeah, I get that some don't like change but maybe they should have stayed on Windows 7! Heck stay on XP if you like.
As it stands, as long as they improve the Touch options, I'm liking what's going on.
Also looking forward to the phone aspect of W10

Answer:I Absolutely LOVE Windows 10

I think it's fine to like or dislike the direction the W10 UI is heading. None of us have all the information to draw any definitive conclusions, so with the proper amount of speculation, good arguments can be made for both sides.
The whole "dislikes change" angle is the poorest argument out there, and only made by those unwilling or incapable of understanding the more complicated and nuanced arguments.

My computer will not print at all. Every time I try, from any application, the print job automatically deletes itself.

All suggestions will be considered

OS: Windows XP SP2
PRINTER: HP DeskJet 3420 (USB)
ANTIVIRUS: Symantec Client Security
FIREWALL: ZoneAlarm Pro, SpywareBlaster

I did recently install Blackshift (

I re-installed the driver, but I am unsure if this is a hw/sw problem.

I can attach a HijackThis! file if you think it would help.

Thank you for your attention and assistance in this matter.

Zeos computer, very old. Win95, 32mB ram.

This computer was given to my son by a neighbour. It's worked OK for the past few months - though very slow, Ok for him. It was bought overseas & has different voltage plugs to our local supply and is used in conjunction with a transformer for use here in Australia. I don't know all the other specs for this computer & I can't access the comp to find out!
This evening he installed a new game (from a cereal box!). I wasn't home at the time. Apparently during installation there was an option to install certain files which he didn't, and the game wouldn't play - error saying he needed these files. So he reinstalled, including this files, and restarted the computer. The game then played OK - for about 20/30 miniutes and then the computer froze. CTR-ALT-DEL didn't work so he tried to restart the computer. Nothing happened.

When I came home he said that his monitor wasn't working. However I think we have real trouble here.
The monitor doesn't show anything at all, right from the start - no memory check or BIOS info or POST screen.
The keyboard doesn't light up as it usually does on system start up.
The power light and the HDD light on the machine come on at switch on but the HDD light immediately goes off.
There is a slight whirr for a few moments and then nothing.
No beeps.
The floppy drive light doesn't come on at all.

I gathered at this stage that it was not the... Read more
