I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I am running WinXP Pro SP2.

Okay for some reason when I go into My Computer I now see this CD Drive H that was not there before. I have a CD-RW Drive D, DVD E, DaemonTools uses F and appears here, I have an external DVD-RW drive that appears as G when connected.

I have tried going to Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Computer Management > Disk Management to remove it but it does not show up here. Only drives C-F appears here.

How do I remove this drive? Why is it there?

This started innocently enough: a wanted to replace my old Launchboard program run on XP with a keymap to remember some passwords, library card numbers etc.

AutoHotKey is a commonly recommended program. But it has no uninstaller that I can find. It is easy to make mistakes with to glitch my system. I'm recovering a backup disk now which does not have the wretched 'script not found' error printed on every OS load.

But the program is still on my backup in a Programs folder where it installs.

I want to safely remove it. It doesn't show up in Programs for the uninstaller to work. That in itself is outrageous.

How can I safely remove AutoHotkey? Has this happened to others or am I the first to be stymied by it?

Something possibly related: I have various .ini files on the desktop. These should not be there. One is called desktop.ini and another backup.ini

Once a backup is secured, I will look at restore points.

Answer:Completely remove AutoHotKey program from Win7

You are going to need to find its leftover files in the registry. This is very dangerous so make sure you create a backup first

Is there any way built into Windows 7 to force a shortcut or program to always open on my second monitor? Seems some programs remember where they were when closed, but others do not.

I'd like to be able to say "Hey Firefox, always open on Monitor 2. "

Google wasn't much help, and I found some 3rd party software that everyone seems to recommend - Ultramon -- but its only a 30 day trial after which it costs $40.

Anyone know any tricks without using 3rd party stuff?

Answer:Set a program/shortcut to always open on 2nd monitor? (Win7)

I think that both the ATi and nVidia control panels have this kind of functionality. Also, I _know_ that the Matrox control panel for TripleHead2Go allows this.

Hey guys, I'm on Windows 7 x64.I installed a program and received trojan alerts from Windows Defender and Avira Antivir, but I followed Defender's advice and rebooted my computer like a fool. Now I cannot open any .exe file. I can't even scan for viruses! I tried logging into safe mode, disabling all non-MS services and all startup items, yet I still cannot open any program. I receive the following message when I (or Windows at startup) try to open something: "The application was unable to start correctly (0xc0000005). Click OK to close the application."I tried transferring and running DDS and GMER via a USB key, but none of them can run.I am quite dumbfounded, as I never had to deal with a virus that wouldn't let me open ANYTHING.Does anybody have some advice? Thanks a bunch!

Hi,Download OTL to your desktop.Double click on the icon to run it. Make sure all other windows are closed and to let it run uninterrupted. When the window appears, underneath Output at the top change it to Minimal Output.Copy-paste following contents into custom scan -area:netsvcs%SYSTEMDRIVE%\*.*%systemroot%\*. /mp /sCREATERESTOREPOINT%systemroot%\system32\*.dll /lockedfiles%systemroot%\Tasks\*.job /lockedfiles%systemroot%\System32\config\*.sav%systemroot%\system32\drivers\*.sys /90Click the Run Scan button. Do not change any settings unless otherwise told to do so. The scan wont take long. When the scan completes, it will open two notepad windows. OTL.Txt and Extras.Txt. These are saved in the same location as OTL.Please copy (Edit->Select All, Edit->Copy) the contents of these files, one at a time, and post it with your next reply. Answer:add remove program will not open

Hi anthonymark and welcome to TSF !

Go to start => run and type regedit. In the registry editor navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Uninstall
And tell us if there's an entry called NoAddRemovePrograms in the right tab. If there's one then right-click => delete it.

If there's nothing there navigate to
and look for the same entry.

I'd suggest that you create a backup of your registry with erunt before making any changes in it.

Hi all,

I have few problems with my laptop here.
I'm using Compaq V6000, Window Xp.
I have problems in removing software and installing new software.
The problem starts from below:

At first i used my thumbdrive to print my project at a printer shop,
when i was back, and use my thumbdrive in my laptop, this message appear:

"HKLM\..\Run:[faizal]wscript.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\faizal.js."

This message also appear from my internet browser. I think it must be the virus, and i tried to delete this virus using my PCTOOL antivirus, but unfortunately it can't scan and function anymore (before that, it can function), wondering why?

So, i use TRENDMICRO "hijackthis" to scan and removed this trojan virus & it worked.

But, problem came back when i use my thumbdrive and other thumbdrives in my laptop, the same msg/virus came back.
When i use the TRENDMICRO "Hijackthis", it also detected messages which are:

1) HKCU\Software\Microsoft/InternetExplorer/Main, Window Title=Faizal
2) Reg:system.ini:UserInit=userinit.exe.password_viewer.exe
3) HKLM\..\Run:[faizal]wscript.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\faizal.js.

Whenever i wanted to install the new softwares, it can be installed but after i click to open the program, the TRENDMICRO "hijackthis" detected those virus/messages and deleted the virus.
I don't understand why if the virus has been deleted, it still came back.

One more problem is i want to delete/remove my PCTO... Read more

Good morning,
I'm having a problem, the newest windows update has caused one of my programs to not work. It is a CAD/CAM software called UCANCAM. The program will open and seems to work great until you attempt to save, open, import, ect. I called the manufacture of our machine that supplied the program, he said to uninstall the program and reinstall. Problem is when trying to uninstall a error message pops up saying "Can't open log file" not sure what to do? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Answer:Unable to remove program (can't open log file)

Sounds like you will have to contact the manufacture of the computer once again and tell them that your having issues uninstalling the program, perhaps they have instructions for a manual removal, then you may need there help to re-install the program. I assume you have the software where you can re-install it correct? If you do not have the software, you need to get that first before you go and uninstall anything.

How do I remove UltraDefrag program items from open with list when I right click in windows explorer in Vista?

I think that this is really a great program, but I am not an expert, and want to keep it simple as possible when I use it, using only the GUI, and not by commands like what we use to do in DOS.

I hope I am clear in my explanation. I have searched for a few hours and can't find where in the registry to delete. I have tried several suggestions, but none of them remove these items.
I deleted udefrag settings in the registry as I show in the jpeg, and it made no difference even after a computer reboot.

Festive New Year Greetings all - May you have a fine 2009!

I am fighting a bizarre "driveby" infection - a bad one - sets up multiple windows claiming to be XP "found infection - offers to clean it 4 u" puts a copy of the MS yellow shield in your starter bar which downloads whole process again.

HOWEVER In trying to find out where it came from, I RC'd and changed the suspect exe file to be opened by default in Notepad.
ONLY that file - did not tick the all option!

But now I can't use any non-default exe files in the System (all try to open in Notepad) and Safe mode wont start. It will start in infected std mode)

How can I remove the default "open with Notepad" problem?

When I initially installed Win7, like a good boy, I unplugged all drives but my SSD. After installing, I plugged in my other drives. And life was wonderful.

A week ago, I wanted to send a Win7-formatted SSD to a friend of mine. So I got the SSD, unplugged my SSD, plugged his in, and installed. I forgot to unplug my other drives.

After many System Repairs, I finally have the system working again, but I can't for the life of me assign my C drive as System, Active, Primary Partition. The closest I can get is Active and Primary Partition. Check out my pic:

I've used diskpart, tried EasyBCD, tried everything. If I unplug all my other drives and boot with just my SSD, then in Disk Management, everything looks as it should -- the C partition is also labeled as System. But if I hook up the other drives, the System designation goes to my E drive.

How can I right this wrong? I know I can format the E drive, but there's like 600GB of data on there and I'd rather not do that if I can help it.

Answer:Remove "System" Designation from Disk 2

1) Boot the Repair disk.

2) Mark the System Reserved partition on Disk 0 ACTIVE (in your screenshot Disk 1)
Partition - Mark as Active

3) Mark the Disk 1 INACTIVE (in your screenshot Disk 2)
Partition - Mark as Inactive

The Disk 0 in your screenshot is UNKNOWN.

Hi: my first post and I need help. It seems like I have a very nasty virus and I admit I feel very stupid.

I use Vista 32 bit Service Pack Two.

Basic Problem: I cannot open Word, Disc Clean up, RKILL, Malaware OR ANYTHING. That is because every time I try I keep getting a regular looking dialog box with this exact message:

In Blue Bar accross the top "Open With"
Then in grey area : "Choose the Program you want to open this file"
File iexplore.exe

Now in White area : Internet Explorer Microsoft Corporation (with the regular Microsoft logo)

When I hit the + These programs show up: Adobe, Media Center, itunes, Word, Notepad, Paint, Real Player

Of course none of these work. Then there is BROWS . . . IF NONE OF THESE WORK BROWSE THE WEB
AGAIN, nothing works

Steps I have taken to try to fix.

Run Internet Option to remove browsing. FAIL

Finally got the rkill--and got this message in my notepad :

Scenario is I have a new sata3 SSD drive on which I want to install Win7. The PC has an existing build of Win7 on a different disc which i want to reformat & use for data. I tried this previously and ended up with a dual booting system. Trying to remove the old Win7 installation and format that disc created much trouble so now I'm starting again.

Can someone tell me please how to:
1. Install Win7 on the new SSD disc (I'm assuming this will work ok as I've done it before),
2. Have the system recognise only the new Win7 installation at boot & not the old Win7 installation so I don't have to select which OS to use,
3. Reformat the old Win7 disc and remove any boot references that it might hold.

Answer:Create Win7 installation on new disc and remove old Win7 install

Only have the SSD connected when you install the new OS.

Then connect your old drive, boot into your new installation and format the old drive.

All done.

I would like to follow advice from a 'trusted source' and remove all instances of a program (IrfanView) so that I can make a clean reinstall using a 'trusted source' to provide the install file.

I cannot find the program in Programs and Features (was Add/Remove Program) in Control Panel.

I can clearly see the program in ZTreeWin.

I have attached image files.

I do not understand the implications of this paradox, but I do not want to 'dig a deeper hole.' I don't understand the implications of Control Panel not finding the installation trees.

Can I simply use ZTreeWin to delete the installations or does this leave a 'mess' of files in other paths and/or Registry entries that will complicate reinstalling the program? I seem to remember being told this at least once in the past 30 years, but that may apply to DOS, or Win98.

Answer:Remove Program - Not In Programs and Features (Add/Remove Program)

Check for the uninstaller here:

"C:\PROGRAM FILES (X86)\IRFANVIEW\iv_uninstall.exe"

If that fails try the free version of REVO assuming that it's the 32bit version of Irfanview on your 64bit machine.

Download Revo Uninstaller Freeware - Free and Full Download - Uninstall software, remove programs, solve uninstall problems

Free version is down the page. It's only suitable for 32bit program removal and not 64bit program removal.

Another option: Reinstall Irfanview straight over the top of the old version and see if it shows up in Control Panel - Programs & Features.

Hello folks and good day.

I've searched the forum and read so many different threads that now I'm confused about the proper way to accomplish the task at hand. To prepare, I've done the following: Downloaded and installed Reflect backup, EasyBCD version 1.7.2 and Partition Wizard. I've successfuly backed up the WinXP and Win7 partitions and have a Partition Wizard Boot disk burned to CD.

Here is a pic of my Disk Management screen:
I originally had WinXP then added Win7 in a dual boot setup. I haven't used WinXP for nearly a year so it needs to go. As you can see, XP is the primary partition and Win7 is a logical drive.

If I understand the steps correctly, I need to make C: active with EasyBCD, then I'm safe to format or delete the contents of the current XP partition? This is the point where I get confused. How do I get Win7 to the front of the HDD, or is it even critical to do that? I'm also confused about the proper steps to take with the Partition Wizard boot disk and/or the use of my Win7 DVD install disk.

I've tried to make myself ready to do this, but I think I've researched myself into a stupor. Please, someone straighten me out on the steps and order which I should do them.

Thanks in advance.

Answer:Remove Win XP from dual boot with Win7. Win7 not at front of HDD.

First you'll need to convert C to Primary using Partition Wizard: How to set partition as Primary or Logical.

Then mark C Active: How to Set Active/Inactive partition -Partition Wizard Video Help.

Then click on HD to highlight and from Disk tab run Rebuild MBR: Rebuild MBR with Partition Wizard Rebuild MBR Video Help.

If Win7 doesn't start outright, boot into Installation DVD or System Repair Disk to run Startup Repair - Run up to 3 Separate Times until Win7 starts on its own and holds the System Active labels.

Now that you know Win7 will boot on its own you can then delete XP to recover its space or image Win7 over there.

I would personally want Win7 at the front of the drive, which would need to be achieved by imaging it. You are in luck since having a WD HD qualifies you to use their superior imaging/cloning app at WD Acronis free cloning app. The Manual is there on the downloads page and easy to understand.

If the old install interferes use PW CD to Mark it Inactive until certain the newly imaged OS will start so you can delete it. If it fails to start up run Startup Repair again until it does.

I installed a new SSD with windows 7 while unplugging my old HDD. Now I would like to remove Windows 7 on the old HDD while keeping the current data. What is the best method for this? I have attached a screenshot of my disk management which was requested when I did a search on this from others. I don't want to do a full format and lose my files.

Answer:New win7 on SSD/want to keep data on old hdd & remove win7/ss inside

Shrink the old Win7 partition by as much as you want for a new User data partition, create a new partition in the space, sort all of your User data into the User folders, copy them there.
Partition or Volume - Shrink
Partition or Volume - Create New

Now from the new WIn7 add each folder to the related Library - Include a Folder - Windows 7 Forums. Set each data folder as the default save location for that Library - Set Save Folder - Windows 7 Help Forums.

Once all data is off the old Win7 partition, mark the System Reserved partition on that HD Inactive: Partition - Mark as Inactive - Windows 7 Forums. Then delete the old System Reserved and Windows 7 partitions in DIsk Mgmt: Partition or Volume - Delete.

You can now either create a new partition in that deleted space, or resize the new data partition into it using Partition Wizard bootable CD to Resize Partition - Video Help. We have never had a partition resizing operation fail with either Disk Mgmt or Partition Wizard bootable CD, but the data should be backed up first anyway because the risk exists.

One final thing: As long as the OS HD is not in Disk0, there is a chance the System boot files can be derailed to a preceding Primary partition during any Startup Repairs or Reinstalls. The solutions to this are: power down to swap the data cable if possible to make the new WIn7 SSD DISK0, making sure to also set it first drive to boot in BIOS setup; or make the new data partitions on the HD Logical which ... Win7 Ultimate

I hope I can explain this clearly.

When I go to an Open or Save dialog box in any application and I click on any folder any where in Windows outside of the application, the Save as... or Open dialog for that application switches to that folder, which is great feature because it quickly enables me to change the location in those dialogs. My question is, where is the setting the enables or disables that functionality.

I don't recall a specific example, but I DO remember deleting an icon on my desktop, then getting that link that says "This will not remove the program, just the icon, go HERE to add/remove programs to remove the program." and then the program was NOT on the list!!

Answer:How to remove a program that doesn't show up in Add/Remove Programs?

There is a program called 'The uninstaller' it finds programs for you to uninstall even if they are not in add/remove programs. Go to - That is where I found it.

I've got a laptop setup for QUAD BOOT with XP Home, XP Pro, Vista and Win7 build 7000.

Can anyone tell me how to, or point me to a guide that shows how to, remove the quad boot and go back to just the XP bootloader? I want to eliminate the Vista and Win7 loads from this machine.

Thanks so much in advance!

(By the way, I tried googling, just couldn't seem to come up with the right keywords for the search!)

Answer:XPHome/XPPro/Vista/Win7 Quad boot - how to remove Vista and Win7?

Easiest way is backup and reinstall. You would have to edit the boot.ini file and remove the partitions manually. If they are primary, you probably won't see them.

First backup.

Boot into Each operating system and change the C: label to XPPro_C, Vista_C, Win7_C, and XPHome_C. This way you can tell the OS partitions apart. In XPHome_C, login as administrator. Go into Disk Management and see if you can see all four partitions. Then, you can delete Vista and Win7. In boot.ini in the XPHome_C drive should be boot.ini. It might be hidden, you could just edit out the two OS. It should work. It could crash. So backup first.

First off, I'm new to the site and I will definately be here for good because there is a ton of info here.  To the problem, I have been searching this site for about 2 hours now.  I have a computer running Windows XP Home SP2.  I know it has a number of virus issues as well as how to address them under normal circumstances so here we go...Computer will boot normally and in safe mode...Normal boot, I cannot open anything from desktop icons or start menu.  If a program seems to start it just closes the window imidiately.Safe Mode Boot, programs will open from desktop icons...some of themIn booting in either mood I cannot access the internet, save or transfer files from one folder to the next(including desktop) or load programs from my jump drive.  If I try to run a program from my jump drive it begins then a pop-up refers to the operation being denied by the admin (i have no admin settings that would cause this).  I have read and understand how this site works, but I cannot download  or open from a jump drive any of the antivirus/malware programs you list, nor can I get a log of any sort.  I can access the registry editor, so I need to know if there is a way to manually locate the virus affecting my bogus admin settings or if there is another way to open files or copy them to my computer.  If I can start any anitvirus program (SuperAnti Spyware, Malware Bytes I use them both on other machines regualarly) I would be well on my wa... Okay, this is definitely tricky.  You have a SmitFraud infection at the very least (it's not usually quite this malicious, so I doubt it's alone).  If everything you say is accurate, then your chances aren't great, but we'll do what we can.  You say can't access anything from a jumpdrive on your computer...but what about a CD?  If you could at least get HijackThis on there, it would prove very useful.Infections can be disabled through the registry, but there are thousands of different entries, so finding the proper ones is an incredibly daunting task.  I could possibly help you disable SmitFraud (no guarantee), but first, get back to me on my question about the CD drive.  In the meantime, I will have to acquire some information.

This is a weird problem I've not seen before and I could use some help or someone to point me in the right direction. I searched the forum with no luck.
I'm assuming this is an issue related only to my machine and not an IE7 problem.

When I click on this link (or one in similar format on the same page), the new window will initially begin to open. Then the new browser instance is redirected to another site....which seems fine & the page switches to the new address, then suddenly the window disappears and the "File Download-Security Warning" box appears and asks if I want to save the file or find a program online to open it with:
Program Name: browserRedirect
Type: Unknown File Type

Clicking on "Find" takes me to the Windows File Association web page where it says that windows does not recognize this MIME type.

Here's the actual link:
If I need to register a file type, I don't where to start! I scrolled through all the file types in My Computer and honestly, I'm at a loss as to what to do.
Could this be related to some corrupted mime file or something?

Ahhh back to the experts. I have a rather unusual, 'never happened before', problem. When I click on one particular shortcut either on the desktop or elsewhere it flashes real quick on the screen but does not open. The program is Webroot Window Washer which is no longer available nor is support. Love it so I want to continue using it. Tried everything, uninstall, firewall, virus protection, but it still occurs. No error messages pop up. It only happens with this program. I'm sure it has happened to others! Thanks

My Issue:

As of 4th July 2009 weekend my system has been operating quirky and buggy. In my troubles I've installed Avast Anitvirus. Now around that time, one day I can recall returning to my computer and it had shutdown on its own, although my system remains on idle the majority of the week by the way. Upon turning on the computer and booted up I got a notification window stating that Windows had been updated and restarted (turned off). At that point, when attempting to open a program (by clicking on any of my icons on the desktop) the computer would quirk and reboot. After several attempts, eventually it resulted in a continuous reboot, window would repeatedly restart. If I can remember correctly, in the process I got some prompts then eventually a dreaded blue screen perhaps something about windows couldnt find or load a file, i think it had a .dll extension. Well, in conclusion, thats when I decided to perform some tech procedures, check boot sequence, BIOS, the usual troubleshooting. Threw in the Windows XP for a Install repair. Good morning,

I just did a Clean install of my Windows 10 Home last night after it developed several corrupt files that I couldn't repair. I previously had Microsoft Office 2013 Professional Plus on my computer but I somehow think that could have something to do with my corrupted files (not letting me utilize Windows Update successfully).

My question: Does the free 'Open Office' program have a program I could utilize to open Power Point Presentations that I had saved on an External Hard Drive? If so, it would keep me from installing Office 2013 again.

When I had Office installed I only used it for the Word Program and to open Power Point programs.

Any ideas?

Thanks and regards,

I downloaded a file from a bit torrent site and installed it. The file was for autocad 2006 and i thought it was safe (at least i think that was when the problem started)Now I cannot open any programs or even get my computer to start in safe mode.Norton keeps telling me that attempts are happening and giving me an address (ip addresss and net address) and telling me the attempt was blocked. This attempt happens over and over about every 5 minutes.I downloaded hijack this and deleted some files and may have deleted some that shouldn't have been deleted.I don't know if this is a trojan, malware, or spywarewhen I get online it is through norton that i can access it bc opera, firefox, and explorer won't come up.Each time i try to open a file I get an error message asking me which program to use to open it. Also, I can open files if i do so as an administrator. Can someone tell me what this might be or what to look for?ThanksJustin I am not sure if I should put a log file here but in case it is ok to post one it is attached.have run a few cleanup programs and detected a trojan and removed it by running in safe mode and running nortonI cannot run anything from my desktop and have to open everything by running it as an administrator.I also cannot run combofix because i initialize as an administrator then I get the popup that asks me over and over which program to open it with in an endles loop.I can run new logs but need to know what to do first.EDIT: Posts merged ~BP

Hello to all,
Hoping someone can assist. I have been using a program called Raw Therapee. I downloaded a new version and on installing it quit saying the old version must be removed. I could not find it listed in Revo Unistaller Pro, so I did a forced uninstall with the location of the main executable. This removed a lot of stuff. I checked the program folder and the folder and many files were still there, so I deleted them. I did a CCleaner in between and after. I then unhide and show system files and deleted the folders in the Appdata of main user and admin account, couldn't find it anywhere else.
CCleaner again and reboot. Went to install the new version again and it claimed that the old version was still installed. I did a search for *aw The* and found an entry in the hidden Program Data Folder. In the Admin account it will not let me in this folder to delete any remnants of the old version of Raw Therapee. Is there some way of fixing this??? Thanks for any assistance!

I'm wondering if this is something that accidently got renamed or if it is part of the virus. Through Windows Explorer, I searched through all files for the symbol and found nothing. Nothing Googled, either. Is there a way I can find out anything about this supposed program? There is no information except the size (.80 MB). I use Windows XP. I have two problems using the Add/Remove function in my Control Panel: specifically I want to remove a program called "Creative Zen V Series (R2). The prompt after attempting to remove comes back with "The specific module could not be found" and leaves the program showing. I need to get rid of this entry.

Secondly I want to remove "Calendar Creator 9" and when this is selected to remove, I get a prompt that says "To install the program it must first be removed using the Control Panel function Add/Remove. This is frustrating as that is exactly what I'm trying to do, NOT INSTALL the program again.

Could use some help with this. Remaining programs can be removed easily using the add/remove function.

Answer:Cannot remove program using Add/Remove in Control Panel

Uninstall Both the Programs Manually

To remove the invalid/orphaned entries from the Add/Remove applet manually [Windows 2000/XP]

1. Start Registry Editor (Regedit.exe).
2. Locate the following key in the registry:
3. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall
4. Make sure you backup the keys by exporting them to a .reg file.
5. Look for the name of the program with the orphaned entry.
6. Delete the entire listing for the software with the orphaned entry.
7. Close the registry editor.
8. Restart your computer.

running win xp pro sp2 on dell system. when i open add remove program applet, it takes a long time to populate the screen because there is a ton of clutter in there because of all the windows updates. can i remove/delete any of them? if so, can is there any way to determine which ones i can remove. or is my only option to uncheck show all updates? Answer:remove clutter in add remove program applet

There are a few things you could do...1.  Instead of using Add/Remove Programs, download CCleaner (install without Yahoo! toolbar) and use its Tools feature instead.  It doesn't solve your problem, but this is an incredibly useful program and it's much faster.2.  Use the Delete Entry feature in CCleaner to remove those updates from your uninstall list.  The programs will still exist, but when you open Add/Remove Programs, they won't show up anymore.3.  Open up My Computer and go to Tools > Folder Options.  Show hidden files/folders as well as system files/folders.  Go to C:\WINDOWS and delete all of the $NtUninstallKB******$ folders.  You can then choose to uninstall them with Add/Remove Programs.  Because the files are missing, the entries will be removed from the list.  NOTE:  If you do this, you won't be able to uninstall any of your hotfixes and security updates in necessary.  Because of this, I would suggest that you first backup all of these folders onto a CD, just in case you ever need to uninstall of the updates.4.  Simply uncheck Show All Updates like you mentioned.  I gave you different alternatives because you asked for them, but I really see no reason to not go with this option.

A very long time ago, I had a user account for me and one for one of my friends. After a while, he didn't need to use my computer anymore, so I deleted his account, through the control panel's users option. He had downloaded something called Beam!2D and it shows on my Add/Remove programs. I try to do the add/remove and it will not remove it. I can see the path of where the program is supposedly installed, but the thing is that it's under the c:/Documents and settings for my friend and that account doesn't exist, so there is no folder.

It's taking 19,992mb and 19,923mb, because there are two instances of the program. How can I uninstall something that technically doesn't really exist? I don't want to restore my computer if I can avoid it.

Question: Drive Designation

I recently installed XP Pro on a new build (Raptor 150g) and it designated F.

Is this a problem? Is there anyway to change it to C:? I am going to be installing Vista as a clean install later so I don't think it is too big a deal but I am curious why that would have happened and how to change it.

Answer:Drive Designation

Windows is a peculiar beast sometimes, and most likely this happened if you merely performed a clean install on a partition already defined - you just reformatted it during the installation.

The best way to ensure you get the drive letters in order is to either use the XP installer to remove and recreate all of them or whichever setup you like - guaranteeing you get the drive letters proper - or using a third party tool to remove all partitions from the drive prior to running the XP installer by booting off the XP CD.

This happens sometimes, and while there is an iffy method of changing the system drive letter, your best bet - since you just did a clean install - is to start over again and get rid of the partitions on the drive during the installation, recreate them and go from there.

Answer:Drive designation from E: to C: ?

I would say that it is probably better to do a clean install of XP where the partitioning and formatting are all done with the XP CD.

Couple of issues here.... help!

1) When I am in Gmail (email) and want to open a word doc or excel and try to open it by a click (internet explorer) it opens of the window that comes with the computer to "buy" or ... so I have to save on the desk top, open word or excel then open the document through the software.

2) When I am in Gmail (email) and want to open a word or excel document in (Chrome) it opens a little window which ask if I want to open, save or open/save and where to save it. If I press open another window opens and ask if I want to open it now.
How can I just click on the word or excel document from gmail or anywhere and it just open up instead of opening up the program to open within?

Thank you ahead of time!

My daughter has an XP Home SP2 PC with a Pentium 4 3.2 ghz processor. The root drive is "F". There is an "A" for the floppy, "D" for the CD, "F" for the hard drive and G, H, I, and J for the card reader. I originally built this PC and somehow when the hard drive was changed, the letter designation was changed as well. It sound easy but How do I change it back to "C" drive without ending up wiping everything and starting over?

Answer:Hard Drive designation

Hi condose !

Unfortunately you can't change the system drive's volume letter without reinstalling. All other letters can be changed in the disk management utility : right-click my computer => manage => disk management. Right-click the drive/partition for which you want to change the volume letter and the option will be there. The letter has to be freed before you can assign it to another drive.

I want to hop on the train and start working towards my MSCE designation. I've read the Microsoft site and I think these are the exams I need to pass..

70-290, 291, 293, and 294. The study material I was going to buy was the self-paced study kit that includes books for all the exams.

70-270 - The Windows XP exam. I was going to purchase the Exam Cram book because I read the reviews over at amazon and they said the Microsoft Press book is junk.

70-297 - Designing Windows Active Directory. Going for the MS Press book on this one.

70-284 - Exchange Server 2003. Again, going for the MS Press book.

I've seen some reviews on the MS Press books and they all go from one extreme to the other. One person says the books are awesome and the next person says they're total junk. Are the MS Press books good? Or am I better to go with some other book from Exam Cram or Sybex?

Also, I'm wondering if I've chosen the correct electives. It looks like I can choose between exam 70-297 (Designing Windows AD Services) OR 70-298 (Security on Windows 2003) for the design portion. And a bunch of exams for the electives (I chose 70-284, Exchange 2003).

Answer:Getting Started on MCSE Designation

I used MS Press books and thought they were good, and I thought the sybex microsoft books were trash. I would buy the self paced MS Press books if i had to do it again.

Hi fst tik, i think people are going to need a few more details about your set-up before anyone is able to help you properly...

To name a few....

Which program is it affecting?

Which OS are you using?

Laptop or Desktop?

Which make/model?
Also, Have you checked for any other programs that may be running in the back ground at the time and could be causing this?

Try switching off all un-needed programs & app's that are running and try then.

I am running Windows 2000 PRo on a DEll Computer. I have knoticed that when I incert CD's in any of the 3 ROM drives I have that Windows explorer will report that the CD is in the wrong DRive. It is like my drives are floating their designation.

For Example: MY D drive is a CDROM, my E Drive is a DVD ROM and my F drive is a Burner. If I put a CD in the D drive it may show up in Windows EXplorer as being in the E drive. Does anyone know what is going on?

I have an older Dell dimension, originally set up for Win 98 that I upgraded to Win XP. It has an internal zip drive. Somehow (and I really dont know how), the zip was designated the C drive and the c drive was designated the E drive. On startup, I cant get into the bios or setup screen, it just goes to Win XP. I want to reformat the HD but it wont let me while Windows is running and I cant find a way to change the boot order to get it to read the Win XP disk. I woiuld appreciate any help. How do I get it to reinstall Win XP after a format when I cant get it to go to the CD first. And how do I make the HD the C drive, not the zip drive.

Answer:Drive designation change

It's a quirk in the XP installation . . if it encounters a ZIP or other removable drive it will assign it as C, then move down the list for the main drive letter . . The solution is to disconnect the removable drive for the installation, then connect it once the operating system is installed.

Most Dells you tap the Del button or F2 as soon as you press the power button to get into BIOS . . once there, set the first boot device to CD

Most of the older Dells have a BIOS update for XP . . you can find it on the Dell Support Site

I was installing a new WD drive; and the "Found New Hardware" pops up every time I reboot. The "Found New Hardware" also seems to pop up every time I do disk management either with WinXP's Disk Manager or Partition Magic. I was changing drive letters when the dialogbox pops up; and XP crashed. Now I can boot up. And I find that the "C:" is assigned to a logical partition that has no windows on it.

There is no problem with the Windows partition per se. Is there any way I can get that "C:" assigned back to the Windows partition?

Or may be my not able to boot has nothing to do with te lost of C: designation. I also have Win98 on this HD. I used Partition Magic to set Win98 to Active; and it boots into Win98.

Can anyone guess what the problem is? And how to solve it without a reinstall?

Answer:My C: Drive lost its designation

I think I spoke too soon. When I look at the Partition Magic after I boot up in Win98, that drive is designated as C: So, it appears that that is the reason for my not able to boot up in WinXP. Anyway, any possible solutions?

I had a RAID 1 configuration but it went belly up after this past Tuesday's Microsoft patches. Fortunately the primary drive was OK and I was able to change from RAID to IDE in the BIOS. But now, the primary and slave RAID drives still have their "Volume 000" when I first boot and in the BIOS (I have an Intel Motherboard) both drives are shown as "00.2" rather than the hard drive capacity (e.g. 1TB).

Is there anything I can do, short of a low level format and complete reinstall of Win 7 (on the one drive?) for these two ex-RAID drives. I have reformatted the second (shadow) raid drive and it's completely empty.

I'm not going to use RAID, I've had several problems since going to it, and I have Acronis True Image that I use for complete hard drive backups so it's not a major problem to rebuild if needed (except this time since the "before RAID" backup is several months old.

Answer:Can I fix an ex-RAID drive designation?

What I have done is delete the RAID 1 during the boot sequence (after pressing CNTRL +I), however only have one of the RAID drives connected in case you have any issues.

Reset to RAID in the BIOS first.

By the way, the warnng about all data being deleted pertains to a RAID 0, not a RAID 1 mirror (for Intel anyway). This will set the drive back to normal.

You can also do it in the Intel Rapid Storage Utility if it is installed.

The repeat the process for the other drive.

If you don't care about the data in the off chance that something goes wrong, just delete the RAID with both connected.

Is it possible to change the drive designation letter of a drive?

I added a drive but when I did the mirror to the new drive I ended up with a C: and F: drive. I want the F: drive to be the D: drive and then make it hidden as it is the recovery partition. That is the short version of the story.

Any help on how to do this would be appreciated.

Answer:Changing drive designation letters

Assuming this is XP:

Start, run diskmgmt.msc.

You can right click on the drives here and change the drive letter. You cannot change the system drive letter, however.

I was wondering if anyone knows a way to change the driver letter designations in XP? I saw a machine where some how the local disk was F:, but one of the card reader drives was C?

If it can't be done from XP, is there a disk utility like partition magic etc. that can do it?

Answer:Is there a way to change drive letter designation in XP?

It depends. You can't change the system volume, without some absolute major headaches, and it usually results in a no-booting system. The reason it happened was the person didn't disconnect their USB card reader before installing XP. Nor did they pay attention at the drive formatting screen to catch their mistake. No one ever pays attention there, unfortunately.

After deleting a RAID 1 setup, I proceeded to change the partition drive letters with disc the attempt to move the C designation to the system partition, it was "lost" once I removed it from another partition.
Now what? The system cannot see a hard drive during authentication - and can't reinstall the operating system since it can't find a hard drive!

Even though this was a naive/ignorant blunder, it must happen enough that someone's got a remedy - I hope.
Any sites to direct me? Help! (Thanks!!)

I currently have a Dell Studio 7100 AMD 1090T with two 750 gb Baracudas in a Raid 0 configuration. My MOB is sata 2 only. I wish to undo the Raid and make them individual drives. I am adding a sata 3 card along with a new Samsung 830 256 gb ssd drive configured as the start up drive and working drive with the two other drives as storage drives.

Have never undone Raid 0 drives before. Any suggestions on how to proceed.

Thanks for all of your help!

Answer:Removing Raid O designation and installing a New SSD

First back up all data on your raid configuration. When you break the raid you will lose all data. Break the raid from the same set up screen where you set it up. There should be an option to delete the array. Change the Sata configuration from Raid to AHCI. Then you will have 2 seperate drives. I would wipe them. Connect the Samsung to your machine, disconnect all other hard drives and reinstall Windows. After the installation is complete, re connect the 2 Seagate drives, and they will be independant drives. restore your data you backed up.

I am answering a previous thread that has been closed. For Windows XP users. If you try to open your c drive and it gives you the dialog box asking what program to open it with, and it does the same when you right click the drive and click on explorer, it is a problem with file association. None of the fixes stated in the previous thread worked but I have found a easy solution for anyone that needs the fix.

go to
there will be a link called "Drive Association Fix (Restores default settings for hard drives)"
download this file and save it onto your hard drive (it will be a zip file)
extract the zip file and double click on the file extracted.
it will ask you to confirm the selection, click yes and your problem will be fixed.
It is a regristry file that only restores the defaults for Windows XP. If you have a different OS then you need to look for the same thing that will restore the defaults for whatever OS you have.
