I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Can I install WinXP Pro from older Dell laptop on to new Dell laptop?

I am using a Dell Inspiron 8200 right now and in order to save some money on my new Dell laptop, I'd like to order Home or MediaCenter with the new computer and then install WinXP Pro myself instead of paying the extra $119 to have them do it. I have a Reinstallation CD of WinXP Pro that came with the old Dell laptop; will I be able to use it to install WinXP Pro on my new one?

Answer:Can I install WinXP from older Dell laptop on to new Dell laptop?

probably not no. they are usually pretty good at stopping people install their restore discs onto different systems.

Over the last 2 days I have been having a problem as indicated in the title of this post. The fault has rectified itself 3 times, but again today, it is back to "battery plugged in, not charging." As I am running the laptop (Windows Vista Home Premium; 32 bit) on the adapter without problems, I assume that the adapter itself may not be faulty.
I also have a Dell Inspiron 630M laptop running Windows 7.  Can I safely use that adapter with the Vista laptop, without causing damage to the Vista ?  If it is safe to do so, and the battery on the Vista starts charging, then it would indicate that the Vista adapter/charger has some kind of fault.
Hoping someone can give me some guidance. Thanks.

Answer:Dell Inspiron 1545 laptop. Battery plugged in not charging. Can I use adapter from a Dell Inspiron 630M laptop ?

If the adapter has the same plug and the same or higher power rating, you can swap them.
Check to see whether the 1545 recognizes the AC adapter or whether it shows unknown (F2 at powerup).  If it shows unknown with two different adapters, you have a bad power jack or a bad mainboard.

I wanted to buy a new laptop and found out about Dell 5577 on the internet. I wanted to know more about it. So in the evening, I went to nearby official Dell Store in Swastik Plaza, Vasant Vihar, Thane(W).

Over there, I met Sandeep Kanade, who is the customer representative at the store. He showed me a Dell 5577 which was on display. I tried it out for a few minutes.

The laptop was good but the display looked somewhat off. The colors were not vibrant and picture quality looked dull.

Before going to the store, I had read on the internet that recent Dell laptops have TN displays with poor screen quality. An alternative to TN is IPS display which has much better display quality.

So while I was trying out the on-display Dell 5577 laptop, I asked Sandeep if this display is IPS or TN. To which he replied that its an IPS display. Then I asked the price of the laptop. He said its 85,000 Rs.

Then I asked, what if there is an issue with laptop in first few days? He said that if there is any issue with the laptop, within the first week of purchase, he will replace it.

I told him that I will come by next morning to do the payment.

September 2nd, 2017
I went to the store to ask about EMI options. Over there, I again asked Sandeep, if the screen is IPS or not. He replied that the screen is IPS.

I looked at the EMI options and didn't like them. So I decided to do the payment in full and went back hom... Read more

Hey, im having some issues. I have a DELL inspiron 5100 laptop and i just recently removed a virus that almost destroyed my hard drive, I got it to work fine but after a few days of use it started to freeze up on the DELL loading screen on the start up, i accidently pressed the F12 key and it took me to a screen with different ways to start up XP, like through the Hard drive or a disk.
i selected to run offthe hard drive and it froze up any help?

Answer:[SOLVED] Dell inspiron 1500 laptop freezes after DELL loading screen

hi, after you hit F12 did you see the diagnostics program at all? Ordinarily I would say It may be worthwhile running a scan on the hard drive if you can. But, I see you removed a virus, can you tell me if it was with the help of the antimalware section on this forum? or did you just remove it yourself? I need to know if you are absolutely sure you removed all traces of the virus - if you had the help of a forum they would have given you the "all clear". Have you tried starting in safe mode at all?

Hi, I had a GPU fail in my Dell Vostro 1500 laptop. The card that failed was an NVIDIA GeForce 8400 GS. The Vostro laptop actually can accept an NVIDIA 8600 GT card too. So I ordered the replacement part from Dell for the 8600 and they shipped me a refurbished unit.
The surgery to put in the new card took all night for hack like to do. I did not look carefully at the refurbished unit they shipped me as I was nervous handling the card (that I might break it).
But when I turned on the laptop after the installation, I did not get a pause at the BIOS saying “I see new hardware” like I did when I upgraded the RAM.
After the computer booted up I uninstalled the 8400 driver and then installed the 8600 driver. There was a snag at it’s possible that Windows automatically reinstalled the 8400 driver during one the required reboots but I KNOW that I wrote the 8600 driver over top at least (I had hoped to do a clean uninstall then reinstall but Windows tried to grab a driver for me).
So now when I right click on computers, properties device manager it shows the video as still the 8400 card. The 8400 card I removed has a sticker on it that says KU907 on it. The invoice for the 8600 that Dell sent for the 8600 says KU907 on it too.
I think I was sent the wrong part from Dell (I paid a higher price for the 8600 GPU) . Is it possible that a legacy driver is making the Vostro think it has the 8400 when the part IS an 8600. Or when I go to the Device Manager, does the computer physically c... Read more

It could be any number of things but my first 2 guesses are possibly the hard drive or might want to take it somewhere so that you will get a correct diagnosis.

If it's the powerup password, you'll need to place a voice phone call to Dell -- be prepared to verify your ownership details and with a credit card (the call post-warranty as a system this old must be, is not free of charge).

I am no expert here, but it looks like the Update service is looking for a Recovery partition which may hold the WinRE tools.  On my current system, that would be partition 4 but it could be different on yours.  Running the command below in an administrative command prompt should show what partition is configured for the Tools.
reagentc /info
Have you made any changes to your drive configuration?  The reagentc info should show the same partition the Update Utility is looking for.

Hi there. I bought a Dell Inspiron 17R-5720 back in September 2012, and have been having this issue pretty much since I bought it from Amazon. The computer is running Windows 7 64 Bit, 6 GB RAM, Intel Core i5-3210M @ 2.50 GHz. I have Microsoft Security Essentials installed and run scans regularly.

Pretty much what happens is that the screen will turn to colored static, and the computer will be unresponsive. In order to make the machine usable again the power button must be held down and the computer restarted. The odd thing about it is that it almost always happens when I am in the process of moving the laptop from one place to another. For example moving the computer from my lap to the table next to me. It has happened once or twice when I just touched the computer while it was on the table next to me. A few times the screen just turned black.

Since it is still under warranty, I called Dell support and they sent out a technician, who didn't seem to do any sort of troubleshooting. He replaced the motherboard and the LCD display. This of course did not fix the problem, so I called Dell again. This time, they had me send the computer to them. They received and sent it out the very same day, again, it doesn't seem that they did any real troubleshooting. When the same malfunction cropped up again, I of course called Dell and they said that when they received the laptop there was some sort of cable inside that was "loose", so the connected this cable and sen... Answer:Dell Laptop, Display Turns to Static/System Freezes, Dell Can't Fix

The technician Dell sent came to my house today. He replaced the motherboard (again), the LCD screen (again), and the hard drive. Fast forward five hours later, and guess what? The problem still hasn't been fixed. I just got off the phone with Dell support, of course their first suggestion was to send the computer in again and have them "fix" it. It took about an hour of going back and forth being on hold/arguing before they finally said they would "elevate" my case and and have someone call me on Monday to discuss it. I think I've given them plenty of chances to solve this, now I just want a replacement computer. Though with their track record, I'm not holding my breath. I'm even doubting that I'll get a phone call.

Does anyone think that this is power supply related? Not the power cord itself (I've used two different cords), but whatever is inside that powers the system. Sorry, I'm not that computer savvy.

When I attempt to start my laptop it goes to the Dell logo screen and will not boot Windows 8. Any suggestions?
I've had the computer less than a month and if I have to restore the system completely it will not cause much of a problem.

Thanks for the help in advance!

Answer:Dell Laptop w/ Windows 8 won't boot past dell logo screen

Hello Univers789,
Re-installing windows is the last resort. So before doing that, you can try the steps mentioned below which might fix the issue. 1. Restart the laptop and start tapping the F2 key at the Dell logo for enter the BIOS. 2. Navigate to the “Advanced” menu. 3. Change the SATA operation/selection in BIOS from Intel Smart Response to AHCI. 4. Press F10 to save changes and exit. 5. Reboot the system. 6. Go back into the BIOS by tapping the F2 key and change the SATA operation/selection in BIOS from AHCI to Intel Smart Response. 7. Save changes and exit by pressing the F10 key. 8. Reboot the system and it should boot normally into Windows. In case the above steps don’t fix the issue, run the Pre-Boot System Assessment (PSA / ePSA) Diagnostics. Run the test and check if gives any error code. Note down the error code and update me with the same, would let you know the next course of action. Please write back with results.

I need some help with my old Dell Studio Laptop. I don't know the exact make, but I am pretty sure it is from 2010. Anyway, a few weeks ago, I put a disc into my laptop and shortly, the laptop started making strange noises. I managed to eject the disc, but now whenever I try to start up the laptop, I cannot. After the Dell logo pops up, it says there is a problem with starting my computer (this is a blue, Windows 10 screen, as I downloaded Windows 10). I have tried restarting, following that blue screen to "Troubleshoot," "Advanced Options," "System Restore," etc., but nothing is working. I have some photos on my laptop that I would like to recover before this situation gets any worse. Thank you!

Answer:Dell Studio Laptop (2010?) Won't Start Past the Dell Logo

First thing to do is remove the hard drive, mount it in an external case (example below) and attach it to a working system to make a backup of those files.
Once that's done, you can proceed with the Dell diagnostics (F12 at powerup) -- test the entire system AND run an extended test on the hard drive.  If there is an error, replace the faulty part.  If not, you can proceed with a repair or reinstall of the OS.
Get the files backed up NOW before you go any further.
You'll need something like this

My home desktop is connected to a wireless router through AT&T U-verse and it's broadcasting just fine. I can see the name and everything when I try and connect on my laptop but there is always an error that brings me to a troubleshooting screen. I've made sure the password is correct by going to Start-Run, IPCONFIG and then typing my IP address into the address bar in my browser. I dont know what else I can do, I feel like I've tried everything! Help please.

Answer:Laptop (Win7 Dell Inspiron 1525) won't connect to desktop (XP Dell) wireless router

Sometimes, you need to replace the router.
Sometimes, you can call your service provider and ask them to take a look on line to see if the subscription needs to be refreshed.
But often, all that is needed (despite the fact that it is a lot of work) is to uninstall your existing system, then reboot, and reinstall everything.
You might also find success by looking at your device manager in Windows to see if you have any grey, red, or yellow flags by any related device. That may show you have a permanent hardware failure if you cannot restore it, then you are off to the store or your provider for a new cable modem or router.

I am a property manager who manages some self-storage facilities. We recently had a few spaces go to auction and as a result the auction winners threw stuff they didn't want into the dumpster. I was emptying the trash from the office and noticed that someone had thrown a few laptops into the dumpster. As a tech nerd, I climbed into the dumpster and pulled the laptops from the garbage.
One of the laptops was a Dell laptop. I cleaned it up a bit and used one of my Dell laptop chargers to try and charge the battery overnight. Then, I hit the power button and hoped..... nada. Opened the back panel and immediately saw that it had no hard drive.... but the memory was still installed as well as the WIFI adapter. The screen was cracked but I had hope that it might still be usable once I could actually get the laptop to boot.
So, I pulled out one of my old SATA laptop hard drives, re-formatted it and installed it in the laptop.
Hit the power button and saw that I could not install Win10 from the USB port since the laptop had an admin password installed and of course, I had no idea what it was. So, I called Dell and gave them all the laptop info and my personal info and they gave me a code to enter which was supposed to disable or erase the unknown admin password and allow me to change the boot options to include the usb port.
The code does not work. The dell rep mentioned something about hitting the Shift and Control keys while I hit the enter key but that still doesn't... Read more

I received a vga/usb device today, was trying to hook up 2 monitors. I plug in the usb device and it loads it's software on the computer and says it needs to restart. I restart and now it says it cannot boot properly and needs to reset to an earlier time. I click reset and it goes to the dell logo with the spinning circle. It's been like this for over an hour. I'm not sure if it's stuck or actually still restoring, my guess it it's stuck since my previous restores have never taken this long. I ran a diagnostics test and everything checks out so it's definitely software related, it won't even boot up in safe mode. Kind of stuck on what to do next. Any information would really help me out, thanks!

I want to switch between 2 laptops onto a DELL E178FPc Monitor (which is VGA input only).  The Laptops are a DELL E6410 -VGA out only, running Win7    and  a DELL Inspiron 5000 series machine -HDMI output, running Win10.
I have tried to achieve this using a KVM switch (the ATEN CS22U, non-powered). It claims to be Win7 compliant.
When I connect it to the E6410's VGA port and then in to the Monitor it says 'no signal detected'. Subsequent research would suggest that even if I were to somehow get a display through the KVM switch it will be lost as soon as you switch to the other laptop (!).
I have come to believe through research on the web that the E6410 Laptop will only work with a VGA monitor being directly connected to its port, or an alternative (powered) KVM Switch with so called Active-DDC (whatever that is!) may also work.
Needless to say I have exhausted my tech knowledge on this one.
Can anyone offer further advice or recommend a solution?

Hello so my laptop (Precision 1350 Workstation) with windows 7 which i bought in September 2016 stopped charging after I used it with my docking station . It worked for a week or two prior to this and then I started getting a notification every time I put the laptop on the docking station that said "ac power adapter not recognized , use adapter of 65 watts or above" but the adapter was 130 watts. Even when the laptop was taken off the docking station and the ac adapter was just plugged into the wall it still won't charge at all. I made sure the bios was updated 1.11.4 and even checked for driver to update and ran the online diagnostics there was no problems but it still won't charge. A tech came out last Wednesday and replaced the motherboard and this fixed the problem for about a day but then when I put it back on the docking station the same problem occurred and it still won't charge. I even tried it on a different docking station but the same make and model as mine and the problem persists. Does anyone know what is wrong? The phone tecnicians and the technicians don't seem to know what to do

I have a Dell Inspiron 1545 laptop.  Recently, I bought a Dell Ultrasharp monitor U2412M to attach to my laptop to have an ergonomic home office.   My knowledge of computers/hardware is pretty... rudimentary.
24"1920 x 1200Nice adjustable stand1x DVI-D port, 1x display port, 1x VGA port, 1x USB 2.0 upstream port, 4x USB downstream ports
I use my computer for writing documents, internet surfing, and rarely for watching tv.  Eventually, I will buy a lighter and newer laptop, but probably not for a year or two.
I think I bought the wrong monitor....  I was hoping to buy something to use now, that will last, and that will work with any future laptop I buy.
My monitor just arrived.  I connected it to my laptop with the VGA cable (my laptop doesn't have DPI or HDMI input).  It worked, but the picture didn't look.... very good.
It is my understanding that VGA connections are the worst quality.  Can I use an ?adapter to connect to the VGA cable to access the DVI-D port on the monitor?  Or is this the best I can get?  I'm not even sure what ?video cards are, or whether I need one of these.
I also looked up the specs on my old laptop and it says the specs of my laptop screen are
1366 x 768 pixel
So is this the limit of what an attached monitor can be?

Any input appreciated.  Thanks.

I have a dying Dell D610 laptop running XP Professional. I want to reformat/restore it, but I don't have the original OS disc (but I do have the original drivers/utilities disc.

But I DO have a legit Dell XP Home edition SP2 disc, with a key & everything (from my mom's Dell Desktop of about the same era as the laptop).

The question is now obvious, can I use the OS disc I have to re-do my laptop?

Answer:Can I Load My Dell XP Desktop Disc on Dell Laptop?

What do you mean by dying ? It would be senseless to reinstall, eg, if your HD was "dying".

As far as I know, an Install disk is not different for a desktop and Laptop. It will configure the OS based on the hardware you have on the laptop. Backup what you need from the laptop, and have at it.

When I try to boot up, the dell logon screen comes on for a second along with the progress bar at the bottom of screen, the progress bar does not fill with the color and the dell emblem goes away..... the circle of dots that should spin also does not spin anymore, just a black screen

Answer:Dell Laptop will not finish Dell logon screen

Hi Raymond2013,
I will recommend you to run the diagnostics on your system to check the hardware functionality:

Restart your system and keep tapping 'F12' as soon as the Dell logo appears.
Highlight 'Diagnostics' using up/down arrow keys and press enter.

Please let me know if you get any error code/message.
In case the diagnostics pass, try to boot your system in ‘Safe mode with Networking’ from Advanced boot menu and see if it works:

Restart the system and keep tapping 'F8' as soon as the Dell logo appears.
Highlight 'Safe Mode with Networking' using arrow keys and press enter.

Note: If your system has Windows 8, F8 key will not work to bring up Advanced Boot menu. Try to boot your system for 3 times and it will automatically bring up the Advanced Boot menu.
Keep me posted. Please reply for any further questions.

Typo on the title, I ment Truemobile 360, NOT 355.

I have an older Dell D400 I'm trying to breath some life back into and I thought I would try out Windows 7.

Well, I got everything working good I think, but the Dell 360 Truemobile bluetooth.

Windows 7 just won't see it. No matter what driver pack I try, it says no bluetooth found. The official Dell Vista pack asks me to turn on the bluetooth but I can't even figure out how to do that, and the light on the laptop is not lit up.

I see dell has this app/patch that it suppose to enable the bluetooth but that also tells me no blue tooth found.

I can't use my bluetooth cellphone as a modem, help please.

That being said, other people have been having the same issue with other laptops, same internal bluetooth and W7 but what worked for them doesn't seem to want to work for me.

On a side note it work's under Windows XP, just not W7.

Answer:Issues with Dell D400 Laptop, Dell 355 Bluetooth and W7

I am plugging a HDMI cable into the HDMI port on a Dell E5440 laptop and the other end of the cable, which is Display Port, into a Dell P1914S monitor.
Nothing shows on the external monitor no matter what I do or try on either the laptop or monitor?  I have tried this on a Dell E7000 series laptop also with no result on that one either?
Does the HDMI port on Dell laptops support video or do I need to utilise some other means of connecting a second monitor.  Bear in mind there is no VGA output on these laptops.
Thanks in advance

Answer:Dell Laptop HDMI to Dell Monitor DisplayPort?

Display port is NOT bidirectional. You can go from DISPLAY PORT OUT to HDMI IN but you CANNOT GO HDMI OUT to DIsplay port in.
I would suggest an HDMI to VGA adapter.

I am using my Dell Inspiron 6000 (as I type this) on AC Power ... but ... if I unplug it, I instantly get a bubble that says "Low Battery, You should change your battery or switch to outlet power immediately to keep from losing your work" (the battery is BRAND NEW, from the latest recall). Obviously, it is NOT getting charged (on AC Power). I also get a box that says "Your Internal Network Card has been de-activated to optimize battery life." Then when I plug it back in (to AC Power) I get the message "The AC power adapter type cannot be determined. Your system will operate slower and the battery will not charge. Please connect a Dell 65W AC adapter or higher for best system operation." THAT is the adapter that I am using! A Dell 65W, it came with the laptop when I bought it (1 Year Ago) and it's working right now (I'm plugged in), and it's green light is on. Also, (when plugged in) I get that box back that says "Your internal nework card is currently active."

What is wrong here???
Thank you for your help.

Thanks, Tammy

Answer:Help! Dell Dell Laptop Won't Acknowledge it's AC Adapter!

First guess? You got a new battery and it is a bad battery. Call Dell and try another battery. Either way, since this happened following the recall, it is safer to try Dell first. Wish I could be of more help, but this appears to be a problem you can not fix yourself.

I have a Dell Latitude D630 laptop (2.2 GHz CPU + 2.0 G Ram) running on Vista, but I don't like Vista.I have Dell Win 7 professional and XP professional reinstallation CDs from Dell desktop PCs. Can I upgrade to Win 7 or downgrade to XP using the CDs?Thank you for your help.

Answer:Dell Desktop Reinstall CDs on Dell Laptop?

I doubt it unless they are a special type that maybe a large company or school district might own.Dell may offer an upgrade disk, you may have qualified for maybe a $20 upgrade and may not know it. One may wish simply keep Vista until you consider a new computer, a new W7 disk would be a waste of money in my opinion. "The era of big government is over," said Clinton 1996

I have a Windows 7 home premium Dell laptop that is on the older side. I needed to reformat it, but no longer have the disks it came with. I used a Win7 ISO to reformat, but it wont take the dell product key. I spoke to Dell support, and they stated that I needed to install Windows with a Dell recovery disk for the product key to work. Is there any way to use the existing product key when I no longer have the disk? Or is there any place I can get an ISO for the dell recovery disk?

I have a dell studio 1555 that has worked very well for a long time, suddenly the laptop would not go past the dell logo, it takes along time for the bar beneath the logo to load. When it is fully loaded I am able to enter into bios, but it will not load the operating system (windows 10). What can I do to fix this?

Answer:Dell laptop does not go past dell logo

Unplug the system, remove the battery and hold the power button for 30 sec.  Remove and reinstall the memory modules.  Try powering up on  AC only -- if it will, but won't with the battery installed, the battery is bad and will need replacement.
If it still won't power up, remove the hard drive.  If that allows it to power up to a BIOS screen (F2 at powerup), replace the hard drive with a new one and reload the OS.
If you still get nothing, the mainboard is bad;  in all honesty, on an eight year old system, start shopping for a new system - this one isn't worth a few hundred dollar repair.

Hleping a friend who had so many viruses on his Dell B130 laptop that all we could do was to wipe it clean and reinstall windows. He does not have a driver disk so I went to Dell's support page and found all that I need. The problem is that I don't have internet access on the laptop that was reformatted. I tried to download to my computer but it wants to install the drivers.

How can I save the Dell drivers to a folder or even to a disk so that I can install and finish this installation?

I thought this would be easy as all the drivers are on Dell's site.

I tried to get to Chat with Dell and could not due to the computers service being over.

Thank you for any and all suggestions.

Answer:Dell Drivers for a Dell B130 Laptop

Anyone, including me (I don't have a Dell), can download Dell drivers to the desktop...and then burn them to CD.Just click the SAVE button, not the OPEN button for each driver package.

I have been using my laptop for service presentations at church in which a Dell fixed projector is plugged in by one of those printer pin connections. Sorry don't know the correct name.
All has been working ok until three weeks ago when the large screen image from my laptop took some time to show. I had to reboot. What I do normally is put the projector on, connect to my laptop and then turn on my laptop.
This Saturday when I tested it, it worked without rebooting but on Sunday refused to show up on screen at all, the projector Dell logo was on but nothing from my laptop. I can't understand what has happened. I checked Device Manager but couldn't find any projector listed. Is there anything else i can do to check if it is or isn't recognising the projector?
The only major programme I have installed recently is Samsung Kies for my mobile phone connection but as the presentation worked on Saturday but not on Sunday, I just can't understand it.

Answer:Dell laptop and Dell projector

You normally have to press a key combination to switch from Laptop screen to external screen.
Plug in laptop and switch on
Connect projector cables to laptop
Use Fn + one of the F keys (Small square in blue) [F7 on my HP], press ing this key combination switches between 3 options laptop only, laptop + external, external only.

FYI I was asking on here as to what power laptop to get ( After much consideration and having owned a Dell laptop before, I plopped for the aforementioned. I am writing this for the benefit of those who are also looking for a performance laptop
This is the exact model I got:
In terms of first impressions I cant say I have any negatives!

VERY fast laptop (albeit some software I think is limited by the programming rather than the speed of the laptop
Intelligent processor and fans (processor speeds up as required - the fans generally silent unless the processor speeds up - very good)
Long battery life when using it for internet browsing or low intensity 2D work (e.g. microsoft word)
Amazing screen (not the 3D version). Simply stunning. Its NOT reflective (my previous dell was quite glossy by comparison) and the resolution is astounding. Very bright - I rarely have it at full brightness, probably 50-75%
sound quality is excellent. The base is not jaw dropping if you are expecting to nail down your furniture, but when you consider it?s a laptop, it is truly excellent - and very loud.
keyboard is very good. Like the tactile feel (almost a matt grip to it) and doesn?t smear
aluminium finish is excellent
connectivity very good again. it misses a VGA out for projectors. Only has a HDMI port to that end.
Large battery means the lapt... Read more

Answer:For those thinking of Dell XPS 17inch laptop (performance laptop) - my thoughts

Good review but would probably have been better put in Consumerwatch.
Ideal for those looking to buy the same type of laptop but at that sort of price you would expect it to be good although that is not always the case.
I usually buy from e-buyer or Amazon but got one from Aldi's last year and not really impressed with that one.
Daughter just asked me to look out for a cheapish laptop that she can get for her son for Xmas.[early shopping but I suppose better spreading it out over the year cost wise.]
I said that he would loose out on the years warranty so I think that may have put her off.

Answer:can I use Win7 HP laptop recovery disc on a Dell laptop

You can't use HP Recovery media on a Dell because all the device drivers and related OEM utilities are different, so Windows will just keep popping up a whole bucket-load of errors (that is, if it starts at all). That Recovery media is only for the laptop it was supplied with.It might also be illegal to try using it on a non-HP laptop.

Hi everyone
Got a bit of a problem which I need help on please:

The screen has gone blank but works on an external monitor, this only started to happen after I let my son use my laptop, he and his friends have connected their iPads etc for films and music...but strangely, sometimes it comes on without any problem when I boot up as normal, so it is still working, this has happened on other occasions I am sure it can be rectified but I don't have a clue really. See below for what I have tried so far:

1. Checked monitor display - it shows the external monitor as the primary display only and I can't seem to get it to display the laptop monitor.

2. Checked the internet for possible solutions but could not properly understand everything to rectify the problem.

3. Could it possibly be anything to do with the amount of memory that has beenused up? (my son has used most of it for his music & films etc.)

Please help

Cheers folks

I see the seller will allow return within 7 days after the buyer receives it.  So, you would have a chance to try the RAM in your computer and, if it does not work, return it. As far as price, I have the impression you are not familiar with ebay auctions. The bidding on that item does not close until Sep 10, 201015:38:28 PDT.  Bidding near auction close time often occurs at a rapid pace and quickly drives the price up shortly before the auction closes.  So, in the end, it's selling price may not be much, or any, less than

A company called TweakBit is relentlessly downloading software to my DELL Inspiron, informing me that my laptop has over 240 errors and offering to fix them if I purchase and install their software. They use the DELL trademark and also state that they are a Microsoft Partner, Norton Secured (using Microsoft and Norton trademarks), and are "100% Satisfaction Guaranteed" by an unnamed agency! They offer a 24/7 support number. I called the number and a man with a heavy Indian accent told me he knew nothing about DELL, Microsoft Partnership, or Norton! I found and deleted the TweakBit software installed on my laptop on 4/1/16. I removed it. It reinstalled on 4/2/16! Is this really a DELL sponsored product? The Geek Squad says that it is a scam! I had to perform a full system reset TWICE to get my computer to function properly!

Answer:TweakBit Software is downloading to my laptop posing as DELL software! Is DELL aware of this?

Hello Sir, I have already replied to the same post you left on Facebook, but would like to repeat my message here.
We are sorry you had a negative experience with your computer that involved TweakBit products. I would like to clarify a couple of things so there are no misunderstandings. TweakBit does not come pre-installed on Dell computers and does not get installed automatically without user consent. We are in fact a Microsoft Gold Application Development partner and we do use Norton to test our software and certify it as virus-free. The only place in our software where you could have seen a mention of Dell would be the section that contains information on your computer system. Our software displays your computer brand, model and specs for your convenience, as many users have no idea where to locate this info when faced with the need to do maintenance on their computer or to call support.
I can assure you that TweakBit software is neither malware, nor does it contain any malware. We take customer safety very seriously and work with every complaint until the issue is resolved to the customer’s satisfaction. Our software comes with an unconditional 30-day money back guarantee, so if you purchased any of our products and did not like how they worked, you can submit a request at for an immediate refund.
We did have some issues with certain anti-virus programs flagging our software (hence most of the negative feedback on the web), but these we... Read more

The problem still exists even after Dell repaired the laptop. It took two weeks to get the repaired laptop back from Dell.

The problem is:
When I plug or unplug the charger while playing music/video on laptop, the laptop is freezing with buzzing sound for 1-2 seconds when the laptop begins charging. Even after Dell repaired the laptop, the problem still exists.
Tried installing the updated drivers, the laptop works fine only for a short period and then after some time the same freezing with buzzing sound problem comes back.
Also, if the laptop is restarted it works fine for a while and then the same freezing with buzzing sound problem comes back.

Not satisfied with the Dell and Dell repair services.
Need help with this problem.

Just to say thanks for the answer to my previous question but here's a new one:

My Dell laptop just died. I am computer illiterate so all I know is how to get the harddrive out of my dead laptop. The reason I need it is that I did not backup my info so I need to transfer it to the new laptop. I am not sure if I am supposed to take out the harddrive on the new laptop and replace it with this old one so that I can back up the data and then switch the harddrives. Or hopefully if there is a way that I can back up my older harddrive externally without having to put it inside my laptop?

Answer:Dell laptop harddrive...can I use it externally to another laptop?

Since it won't boot in a different machine, putting in the other laptop won't do you any good. Look for an external case with a USB connection so you can use it is an external backup drive after you empty it.

I want to view Netflix "view now" videos online with an external monitor. What's the easiest way to accomplish this?

Thanks in advance.

Answer:Adding a 22" Dell External Monitor to 15" Dell M70 Laptop

Get a 22" Dell monitor and connect it to the vga port on your laptop. There is an Fn + (some other key) that will enable the external monitor. You can press the Fn+(some other key) combination so that either the laptop display is used, the external display is used or have it set so both are used for the display. Typically the combination is the Fn key plus one of the F keys at the top of you keyboard.

My new DELL laptop came with a little zip-lock bag containing a thumb drive. Since it did not come with any instructions I had to go online to find out what it is and how to use it. But DELL backup (using the reboot then F12 key) says it will NOT work unless the drive has at least 16 GB of empty space. DELL has sent me an 8 GB drive, which is useless. I'm guessing I've paid for this little drive but I need what DELL says I need - a 16 GB drive. If I ask will DELL mail me the correct one? I have the WIN 10 OS.

Answer:The backup device that DELL sent with my new laptop is 8GB. DELL says I need a 16GB device.

It is probably used to recover the system.  If you try to create a recovery drive, it will erase the one you have..
Does it have files on it and is it labeled when you look at it in Explorer?

Hi there I have a Lattitude e7470 and i am trying to use it with a Dell E-Port Replicator K07A
The system works OK except for this one scenario.
Laptop is docked and closed and i am working on it. I go to undock the laptop to take it with me somewhere and it does not go to sleep. The power policy says that if the lid is closed and the laptop is on battery then it should go to sleep. Whats going on?
If i undock and immediately open and then close the lid it behaves as expected. Obviously for my user, this is not ideal. he just wants to be able to pick up the laptop and go (having it sleep or hibernate when removed from the dock)
How do i force it to go to sleep when i remove it from the dock? there has to be a way. Laptop is windows 10.

Question: Dell Laptop DMA

I have a Dell inspiron 3500 laptop that I receently had to format and reinstall 98 on due to a virus. All went well until I went to enable DMA for my Dvd drive. I check the box in Device manager, it prompts me to reboot. Upon rebooting, I look at dma to see if it is still checked and it is not. Dell support claims dma is not available for this model when using original windows media for installation. Inspiron 3500, Pentium II 333, 192 mb ram, 6gb udma 33 toshiba, toshiba dvd-rom, margi dvd-to-go pcmcia decoder, Win98 SE.
Dell support also claims that the recovery disk will allow this option, where-as the original 98 disk installation will not. There is no drivers available on their site for the ide bus-master. I have replaced the hard drive and the dvd to no avail, also things support claimed were "bad". I have gotten nowhere trying to find out who actually manufactured the mobo for this model. Is there anything I can do to get this to work. This system used to play dvds beautifully with the decoder card, now they can't be played with or without it. HELP!!!

Im not very laptop literate but I think you should try getting the latest device drivers for your hardware on another pc via floppy. Then remove the old device driver and reinstall......Do Not attempt to update cause this too can also cause more problems. I hope this helps.

This old Dell Inspiration is a good little laptop for using a few MS Office products. That's about it.

I had Avast Pro installed as my primary virus protection. But when it would start its "quick scan" late at night, I would come to the PC in the morning with it frozen at 7%. I had to do a hard reboot (sometimes several times). When I called Avast Tech Support, they took over the PC and found some Trojans and Malware and then told me I either had to take it to Geek Squad or pay them $175 to have someone come out to fix it.

I had to completely uninstall Avast Pro to get this PC to run.

I would like to try to do this myself.

Dell computers (especially laptops) can only use certain brands of memory. Your best bet is to go to There you can tell it your system and it will show you a stick that they guarentee will work. You can order it from them or double check the same stick on newegg to see if you get a better price there (happens sometimes).

Question: My Dell Laptop

I haven't posted in a while on these forums. But I guess now is a better time than never.

I have a laptop, an Inspiron 600m. I have had it for about a year and a half. It's specs are:

1.3 GHz Pentium W/ Centrino
256 MBs of RAM
30 GB HD.

Lately, like in the past 3-4 weeks the laptop has been heating up tons. The performance is still pretty good. Only normal wear-n-tear type thing, like any other computer. After I do my bi annual format, and reinstlal everything is good again. But that doesn't explain the heat that's its giving off.

Basically when I rest my hand on the left hand side, its burning.. literally to the point to where sometimes it gets so hot that I can't put my wrist on there anymore. As well as TONS of heating underneath, and even the keys get hot, and kinda burn my fingers when I type at times.

I don't have my computer on for extreme amounts of time, of course not, its a laptop. It would be like torture for a computer like this with not enough ventilation. it just gets this hot after a little bit.

What do you all think it may be, and what do you think I should do to cool it down.

FYI: I am a college student with little to no money at all. Something cheap and inexpensive way of fixing it would be gratefully appreciated.

Answer:My Dell Laptop

You can get one of those fan setups that sit under the laptop and cool it down, but did you ever look into the possiblity that dust is building up and it is not getting the proper ventilation???

Question: dell laptop

hi there,im looking for some advice, basicaly im just about to buy my first laptop, since i have dealt with dell in the past and they have been pretty good im going to stick with them, im going to buy the Inspirion 6400, take a look here click herethe cheapest deal £498 and seems pretty good value, but im looking at the £589 deal as it has double memory and more hardrive plus a better optical drive, i have two questions, firstly do you think its worth splashing the extra dosh on the £589 deal or not?.. my second question is about the graphics card, i would like to play sport games like championship manager and tiger woods, im not sure how good the graphics are on there so would i need to spend another £80 on a 128mb radoen graphics card or £150 extra for a £256mb graphics card or would the onboard graphics be enough for what i want??...many thanks in advance for your input..

Answer:dell laptop

You are looking at the same laptop i bought very recently.Word of advice,You can haggle a little with Dell.I picked the cheaper option then upgraded to a dvd writer and 1G of ram,and also asked for a recovery disc and windows disc.If i had paid online,it would have cost around £125.00 extra.I got the upgrades for around £65.00There was a thread on PCA saying to phone and ask for the best price, this i done then haggled a little.Free discs and £60.00 saved, now that what i call good service.Just to add,im very pleased so far with the lappy..very quick and reliable and does everything i want it to.Regarding your games,i would upgrade to the best you can afford.I do not use the lappy for games,so cannot really comment to much.Good luck with Dell,im sure you will be impressed with the lappy.

Because I could have had a power surge run through the laptop I may have done a few things. First, I could have a fried mobo. Hoping that the second is fixable. I have also read that my bios could have gotten messed up and the suggestion is to take out the CMOS battery and hopefully reset the bios.

Since this is a laptop and taking apart is time consuming, my question is:

Can I reinstall the bios on this laptop and if so how can I do it. Maybe the better is to take it in and have it checked.

I would like to try to do something myself before I take it in and pay to have someone tell me that it is dead for sure.

Any help would REALLY be appreciated.

Ok, I have sucessfully revived the Dell Latitude D610 but I am not able to play FFXI on it because of extreme lag in the game, before anyone says or asks, yes I have installed every driver that Dell offers plus some I found otherwise and the laptop is supposed to have an ati Graphics card but I think it may be nonfunctional (?) or something, any assistance with this would be great, thanks to everyone in advance, Balth

Answer:RE: New (to me) Dell laptop

Lag can be caused by background processes, RAM, hard drive speed, and yes graphics chipset. Bad thing about laptops, is that you can not change out the GPU or CPU, but you can always change out the harddrive and upgrade RAM. The max you can go is 2gb RAM

It uses integrated Intel 128MB Shared GPU. Video out is a ATI mobility Radeon X300. The great thing about the Video out, is that you could hook it up to a LCD HD and play games that way.

Here is the review on that machine

Question: dell laptop help

hi there..I took delivery on fri of my brand new laptop from dell, i bought the inspiron 6400 and paid £670..cost me a bit more than the standard price as i bought a graphics card for gaming, at the time of order they had some great offers on.. double memory from 512 mb to 1024 mb and also upgrade hardrive from 80Gb to 120 gb. I have now had it a couple of days and everything was fine, i have got it all set up to how i want it and transfered all files and software from my old desktop pc on to my new laptop which took ages, however this morning when checking hardrive space i have noticed i have only got 80Gb and not the 120Gb they offered when i bought it, on the order note it says upgrade from 80 to 120 so no worries there.. I would just like to know what i should do about this, i mean is it worth the hassle of taking the laptop back etc for the extra space? because maybe 80gb will be plenty enough but its just the principle of the thing! any advice would be really appreciated.thanks

I purchased a new Dell Inspiron 1521 notebook. I find that it gets very hot and am concerned as Dell had overheating battery problems in the past.

Is there a utility to test the temperature of the system, or the battery in particular?

Answer:Dell Laptop gets very hot

Laptops usually run a little on the warm side. Especially the longer they run. This is due to a lack in air management. You could get a chill mat. I think that's what they're called. They help.

As far as testing it, if it hasn't burst into flames then you're probably good.

I bought dell laptob 1 year ago. I am soo dissapointed with this laptop (inspiron 3543) Intel core i7, 8GB RAM, 2GB Nvidia.I want watch a video that is 1,5 hours long. When I skip for example to 55. minutes the video lag and start from the beginning.  My friend have laptop Asus, Lenovo with much worse specifications and them video is working properly. I think that it is not normal for that specifications.

Answer:Dell Laptop

There is a lot of info you could have included in the question.  Such as exactly what and how you were watching the video, such as streaming and network configuration.
Are your friends using the same network connection as you.  Any software differences regarding the video or how busy the system might be...

I have a Dell 6400 laptop with windows vista my problem is my laptop since yesterday does not reboot i press the power botton and lights flash cd rom flashes fan turns on but no screen and no harddrive sounds its totaly dead can someone help me ? do i need a new hard drive ? or is it a virus ? i need help and any reply would be apreciated ! thanks

Answer:Dell Laptop

hi ve3lty,

try removing the battery and the AC adapter. press power ON button for 30 secs. attach battery and AC and power ON as normal. if you still get nothing on screen, try an external monitor. if this does not work, remove the hard drive. Removing the hard drive will not affect initial power ON procedures. It will however end in error but the objective here is to see if you get something on screen.

post back what happens.

Question: Dell Laptop

I have the Dell Inspiron 1300 Laptop. Can I connect to the TV to view photo's ect. What do I need to be able to do this.

Answer:Dell Laptop

If your TV has a VGA connector, as many LCD TVs do, then it is straightforward just to connect a VGA monitor cable between the two. On the Dell the VGA connector is on the left hand side. You can then switch the display between TV, Dell screen or both with function key.If TV doesn't have a VGA then you would need to find some sort of adaptor, but I am not personaly aware of one.

I have a laptop here, Latitude E6400. The problem here is that it the CPU runs at 100%. It's a Intel Core Duo 2nd generation. Multiple windows where thought to be the cause, but you can just boot up the laptop and let it sit for about 5 mins and it will start doing it when nothing is running. Question: Best Dell Laptop?

I know "best" is pretty broad, but I'm looking for something that can handle gaming, and would be good for a college student like myself.

I don't know what exactly to look for in a laptop, but I want something that's fast and has a lot of space and stuff.

Thanks in advance guys....

On second thought, it doesn't have to be a Dell, although I'd probably prefer a Dell.

I haven't built or purchased a new computer in almost 4.5 years and am a bit out of the loop. I want to purchase a Dell (or Alienware if necessary) laptop that will allow me to play higher end games like Far Cry 2, Crysis, Half Life Episode 3, and anything else intensive coming down the pike. I'd like to keep the overall pricetag between $1200-2000.

What are the key things to be looking for? Can a high end Dell XPS Notebook (around $2000) handle these games, or would I be wasting the extra $800 compared to the $1200 version?

Any suggestions are much appreciated! Thanks.

Answer:New Dell Laptop: What to get?

Is there any particular reason you need it to be a laptop? As far as gaming is concerned you will be able to get much more for your money building a desktop.

This is my first laptop and dell product
But i'll naver buy a dell laptop
Dell has the worst warranty system I've ever seen
I bought the Inspiron i5 7559 for $1000
After purchasing a notebook, I had a problem before a month.
So called them andthen I have received technician service 3time a month because of the battery problem but techicain could not fix it.
Then i discovered that the reason for not charing the battery is that the line of the notebook case is prossed and does not work.
I adjusted the line and it worked well.
At that time, I had to move soon, So i did not know it was a problem again.
And two months later, while i was working on my laptop I had a hinch problem.
So i asked Dell about warranty and i received no answer.
And they send to price about part.
$430 for part and $170 installation costs.
It was about half the price of a laptop.
But i had no choice so i bought and wait 2weeks to order
I had to replace parts myself because i was not much money left.
After the operation, it worked well to the window, so I thought there was no problem.
Before discovering batteries are not charging,
I sent a letter to Dell and noticed that I forgot what I missed.
So the explosion occurred when I turned on the laptop and saw the window running and the battery charger plugged in.
So I contacted them and they returned the only explanation that they could not make warranty..
I was able to use this laptop for only two months for 6 months.
I do not know why the warranty exist... Read more

Hello.I recently bought a used dell latitude d520 laptop. It worx  fine but kinda light on specs. Duo2 core, 40gb hd, 512mb RAM. I just bought a new 250gb internal hd. I cant get it to work properly. I install the OS, but I get this error all the time. Says "a problem has been detected and windows was shut down to save my computer". A blue screen, it also says other stuff to try if the error keeps appearing. Stuff I have no clue about, says to disable cacheing and shadowing, but again, I have no idea. It does not give detailed instructions. Should this big hd work on this laptop?? I got it from ebay and it says it was for my model. One question tho ...... would 1/2gb of RAM be enough to run this?? I believe it is, but not sure. I do not want an ext hd, I REALLY want this one to work. Thanx in advance for any replies.

Answer:Help w/new HDD for dell laptop

Welcome to the CH forums. You don't say which OS you have installed, XP is assumed.  You may have a problem if you didn't use the original install disk supplied with the laptop.Half a gig of ram should be ok but on this site a hard drive with "Capacities of up to 100gb" is mentioned. Others will probably be able to give more detailed info than I can and I recommend you looking at a Dell specific forum.Good luck

I'm also in the same situation, I bought a dell 1300 from ebay and the Hard drive had been changed, i'd like to get this hard drive into the same state as when dell shipped it, with Operating system and also recovery partition. Is this possible and how do I do it?

I'd also like to create the recovery partition onto an external hard drive incase It happens again.

Any & all help will be greatly appreciated

Answer:Dell Laptop

I have moved this post to a new thread of its own, it much easier to help that way

Did you get any recovery discs with the laptop?
if the harddrive has been changed then it should have a recovery CD to rebuild it

You could go onto the DELL website and using the TAG number (its on a label on the machine) see if you can download any recovery disks for the machine, also ask DELL Support to send you some disks

I'm not sure if they have a recovery partition built as part of the rebuild from recovery disks - but if they do - then you should be able to access the recovery partition using F11 or F10 keys - I'll need to look up the correct keys - it my need to be ALT Key + an F key

Question: Dell Laptop/Ad-top

I recently bought a nice laptop computer from Dell for $800 dollars, or at least I thought I was getting a steal with the $800 price tag. I would have been much better-off getting the laptop with out a hard drive or an OS and just throwing on windows myself. Dell must sell their computers for so cheap because they are supported by advertising campaigns, like Aol, or Corel. Anyway, after removing as much as I could see, anything that started with free trial offer, I decided to run HIJACKTHIS and see what I could get. Unfortunatly I don't know which to delete/fix and which to leave be. Please help, here is the log
