Question: task manager wont open

my task manager wont open at all

Relevance 100%
Preferred Solution: task manager wont open

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Recently I've had an issue where for no reason my task bar wont respond and the task manager wont open, both times I had to force a shutdown and reboot.

The first time I was watching a movie, after the movie I hit pause and went to open Firefox through a shortcut on the task bar and got nothing, this computer can be slow at times as its age is catching up with itself so I thought to just wait a few seconds and try again, still nothing. Then I went back to the media player and noticed the media player was fully responding and had no issue, using Alt+Tab I could switch to other programs or folders and they worked fine but the task bar was completely locked. I tried Ctrl Alt Delete to try ending the explorer process then starting it up again as I figured that might help but after waiting for a couple minutes it never came up! I hit the keys again and still nothing waiting and trying over and over nothing came up so I ended up having to force a shutdown and cold boot.

The 2nd time it happened I literally had no programs running except Comodo and the computer had been left alone for about an hour, when I returned the task bar was again locked up and the task manager would not show. Thanks for reading all this and any help on the subject is much appreciated!

Does an error message pop up when you try to open task manager? What are the specs of your computer? Do you have any antivirus protection?

Thanks.

I have a Dell 1525 Laptop running Vista Home Premium.
-Internet doesnt work it just says "Website Found, Waiting for Reply"
-Task Manager only opens in the bottom right try (the little graph)
-When I try to shut it down, it just stays at the Logging Off screen

Searching around the internet seems like a common problem but couldnt find a solution

Answer:Computer Extremly Slow, Wont Shut Down, Task Manager Wont Open

Hello and welcome to Major Geeks.

I've deleted your posts with inline logs. We do not allow them here because it messes up the search function.

Based on the fact that you were posting security scan logs, you must think you have malware.

If you do suspect your computer is infected, you will need to go to our Malware Removal Forum and perform all steps in the READ & RUN ME FIRST Malware Removal Guide (incl. spyware, virus, trojan, hijacker).

Once you have done so, you should start a new thread in the Malware forum and attach your logs as per these instructions: HOW TO: Attach Items To Your Post

Hi,
I have not been able to open task manager for the past few days but i thought it was just some kind of glitch. It got quite annoying so I tried to check my system logs. The Event Viewer gets stuck on 'Reading data, please wait' and when I go on system logs, there is nothing. I though that that was strange so I tried to restart and now my computer hangs on the logoff screen and I have to kill it with the power button.
I hope its not a virus but it looks like it quite a lot.

Any help would be great!

Thanks in advance,
Andy

Answer:Vista wont log off, task manager wont open and other problems

I have now resolved the issue. I finally managed to get onto safe mode and then restared from there and that has done the trick. I think it must have been some kind of error/glitch in vista.

Hi WhenIcarusFalls, welcome to TSF..

it sounds like you have a malware infection. Please read through this post as it explains on the steps to take before posting a Hijack This log file here.

Also, feel free to try the Task Manager control tool which I have uploaded here. Unzip it, run it and the rest is very self-explanatory and that may bring back normal usage to your Task Manager...but don't be surprised if it doesn't as it sounds as though the malware infection has overwritten some files.

Hope that helps :)

Hey,
I scanned using Spybot,Adware, removed it all. Havent scanned for virsues yet but heres my log. Most of it looks harmless.
My computer runs good, except for the fact it doesnt open task manager, msconfig, or regedit. Otherwise, no problems with anything(cept IE) I use mozilla however, so i can scant using TrenMicro(which i used to love to do) Now I use Avast Anti Virus Scanner. Ill use that to scan. I like to keep it in tip top shape.

Answer:Task Manager wont open/Hi Jack Log

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes. You should not have any open browsers when you are following the procedures below.

Go to My Computer->Tools/View->Folder Options->View tab and make sure that 'Show hidden files and folders' (or 'Show all files') is enabled. Also make sure that Display the contents of System Folders' is checked. Windows XP's search feature is a little different. When you click on 'All files and folders' on the left pane, click on the 'More advanced options' at the bottom. Make sure that Search system folders, Search hidden files and folders, and Search subfolders are checked.

For the options that you checked/enabled earlier, you may uncheck them after your log is clean. If we ask you to fix a program that you use or want to keep, please post back saying that (we don't know every program that exists, so we may tell you to delete a program that we think is bad to keep).

Turn off system restore by right clicking on My Computer and go to Properties->System Restore and check the box for Turn off System Restore. Click Apply and then OK. Restart your computer. After we are finished with your log file and verified that it's clean, you may turn it back on and create a new restore point.

Download http://downloads.andymanchesta.com/RemovalTools/SDFix.exe and save it to your Desktop.

Double click SDFix.exe and it will extract the files to %systemdrive%
(Drive that contains the Windows Directory, typically C:\SDFix)

Please then reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
Restart your computer
After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
Instead of Windows loading as normal, the Advanced Options Menu should appear;
Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press Enter.
Choose your usual account.
Open the extracted SDFix folder and double click RunThis.bat to start the script.
Type Y to begin the cleanup process.
It will remove any Trojan Services and Registry Entries that it finds then prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
Press any Key and it will restart the PC.
When the PC restarts the Fixtool will run again and complete the removal process then display Finished, press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.
Once the desktop icons load the SDFix report will open on screen and also save into the SDFix folder as Report.txt
(Report.txt will also be copied to Clipboard ready for posting back on the forum).
Finally paste the contents of the Report.txt back on the forum with a new HijackThis log

my task manager wont open with ctrl alt del or when i right click the windows taskbar either. i also tried opening the TASKMAN application in C:\WINDOWS, and copying and renaming that application, neither work. my limewire program also opens up by itself everytime i close it.

i believe the problem started when i downloaded something called setup.exe, me being stupid, i opened it but blocked its access with my firewall software. there is now a hidden folder in C:\Program Files called outlook with an application called outlook (not outlook express). i believe this is where the problem is coming from, but i cant delete it because when i try, it says the application is being used and since i cant open the taskmanager i cant stop the application to delete it.

any advice on my problem?

Computer is running slow and won't load Task Manager (noticed that CPU usage suddenly goes to 100% if I try to open Task Manager, however, it never loads). Likewise for Chrome, and many other antivirus/malware software. They all work once I get into Safe Mode, however, they find nothing. The anti-rootkit programs all complain about a driver not loading- possible rootkit infection (or cause I'm in Safe Mode)?

After the last window's update on Dec. 18th failed, my computer behaves strangely. I tried to restore the system to before the update, but now I can not open window's update. In normal mode, the window update window freezes when opened. In safe mode, window update does not even open. Also my task manager does not open in normal mode. A taskmanager icon appears on the system tray, but the task manager does not show up. Also the wireless network manager freezes when I try to access it in normal mode. The system takes longer than usual to load in normal mode. The system also frequently crashes while starting up in normal mode, only a blank screen with a mouse arrow in the middle appears. When I shut the computer down, it freezes in log out screen, so I have to manually shut it down. The defragment also will not run.
There is serveral cases of service hang report in my problem log involving Nlasvc, SstpSvc, WinHttpAutoProxySvc.
I'm sure I don't have any malware in my system left since I checked it through the virus removal/hijackthis forum as well as multiple virus scans, still the problem persist.

Answer:Can not open window's update/ task manager/ network manager and can not shut down

Hi boman,

Some questions:

You said you are sure you don't have any malware left. Did you have malware? And did you have malware when you tried to do the update which wasn't sucessful?

Do you have a cd with your computer?

Which Antivirus program are you using?

Hi All,
I've been racking my brain trying to see what is going on and I cannot for the life of me figure it out. So I was hoping that someone on here might be able to help. Here's my situation. As I mentioned in the title something is going wrong with internet explorer and it opens in the task manager but is not open on the screen (although I do often see a little flash of something like a window popping up every now and then but only a flash then it's gone). Also I will click on normal links (like cnn.com after searching google for "cnn" and it will send me to some random website, usually trying to sell me something). Finally after some invesitgation it looks like there is a false iexplorer.exe file on my computer that got there somehow, and I think is causing issues. Oh and my windows firewall and symantec have been disabled. I have scanned with malwarebytes, adaware, spybot, and a few others with some each of them finding things but nothing has been fixed.

Any and all help is greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance,
-Duck

My browser keeps freezing/not responding. But I cant close it, or end task.
If I press Ctrl + Alt + Delete, the task manager appears for a split second, and then closes.

If I right click the toolbar and select Task Manager - the same happens.

Any Ideas whats going on?

Answer:Task Manager Wont Display

More than likely it's a virus or spyware. I had this happen on
two computers and it was a trojan virus. Try some of the
free online virus scans if you have a high speed connection.
If you have an Antivirus program installed just update the
virus definitions and run that first.

Trend Micro
http://housecall.trendmicro.com/

Norton Antivirus Online Scan
http://www.symantec.com/cgi-bin/securitycheck.cgi
(Click the security check, then the screen will popup for the
Antivirus scan)

Mcafee online Virus Scan
http://us.mcafee.com/root/mfs/default.asp?cid=9913

You can try this Spyware program that works great.

Spybot 1.3
http://www.safer-networking.org/en/d...mportant1.html
(You will need hit the search for updates and download any new
spyware detection definitions that are available before you run it.)

Good Luck.

Hi guys,

Last week, I tried to install GoToMyPC (a trial version) and the computer started running really slow, so I deleted all the files associated with it (from Program Files) after uninstalling. I didn't delete anything else (or so I think) but my Limewire kept restarting itself, and I had to uninstall it too and delete all the files associated in Program Files bc I would keep getting an error that Limewire cannot start. Now, the sound was gone too, several of the windows updates were deleted, and now the task manager won't show up. I got the sound back, and did all the windows updates. I have also ran Ad-Aware 2007 and have tried everything that I could to get the task manager back. Here is my HiJackThis log.

Please follow our standard cleaning procedures which are necessary for us to provide you support. Also there are steps included for installing, running, and posting HijackThis logs as attachments.
Run ALL the steps in this Sticky thread READ & RUN ME FIRST Before Asking for Support
Make sure you check version numbers and get all updates.
Very Important: Make sure you tell us the results from running the tutorial...was anything found? Were you unable to complete any of the scans?...Were you unable to download any of the tools?...Did you do the on-line scans as suggested? etc.

After doing ALL of the above you still have a problem make sure you have booted to normal mode and run the steps in the below link to properly use HijackThis and attach a log:
Downloading, Installing, and Running HijackThisMake sure you also rename HijackThis.exe as suggested in the procedures. Use analyse.exe for the new name. This is very important due to some new infections going around.
When you return to make your next post, make sure you attach the following logs and that you have run these scans in the following order too:
CounterSpy
AVG Antispyware log - ONLY IF NEEDED you were not able to run CounterSpy
Bitdefender - from step 6
Panda Scan - from step 6
runkeys.txt - the log from GetRunKey.bat
newfiles.txt - the log from ShowNew.bat
HijackThis

NOTE: You can only attach 3 files in a single message so it will require that you use two messages to attach all of these logs!

Answer:CPU at 100% unless task manager is open

Greetings and Welcome to The Forums!!My name is Gringo and I'll be glad to help you with your computer problems.I have put together somethings for you to keep in mind while I am helping you to make things go easier and faster for both of usPlease do not run any tools unless instructed to do so.
We ask you to run different tools in a specific order to ensure the malware is completely removed from your machine, and running any additional tools may detect false positives, interfere with our tools, or cause unforeseen damage or system instability. Please do not attach logs or use code boxes, just copy and paste the text.
Due to the high volume of logs we receive it helps to receive everything in the same format, and code boxes make the logs very difficult to read. Also, attachments require us to download and open the reports when it is easier to just read the reports in your post. Please read every post completely before doing anything.
Pay special attention to the NOTE: lines, these entries identify an individual issue or important step in the cleanup process. Please provide feedback about your experience as we go.
A short statement describing how the computer is working helps us understand where to go next, for example: I am still getting redirected, the computer is running normally, etc. Please do not describe the computer as "the same", this requires the extra step of looking back at your previous post.NOTE: At the ... Now that I've solved the slowness problem on my desktop, I'm moving to a problem on my laptop. It's an Inspiron 6000 with xp media edition. It has a 100G hard drive and 1G of RAM. When I try to open up task manager I get this strange - partial box. It will show the task that is running (or not!), and has the buttons: end task, switch to, and new task at the bottom. But there are no tabs at the top for applications, processes, etc. Nor is there any way to close the window. So it just floats there on top of any other application until I reboot. I don't know what you call those mini-windows in the task bar that show which applications are running are. But there is one of those with a computer icon in it. If I right click it, I can't close it that way either.I called Dell about it a week ago, and the only answer they came up with was to save all my data, programs, etc. and go back to factory settings. Since the problem didn't seem as important as solving my desktop problems, I thought I would wait and see if there was another solution. Going back to factory settings and reinstalling everything is a lot of work! It's not a huge nuisance because I don't use this very often. Still I wonder if it's indicative of a bigger problem. Is something rotten in Denmark?? or in this case, in San Francisco?Has anyone seen this before? Does anyone have a solution? Thanks, Pat

Answer:Can't Open Task Manager

This is an easy one. What you have to do, is when you open your task manager, double click right above where it says "TASK". Anywhere in that blank area will do, and it will open up the rest of the manager. I dont know why windows did this, but it is a simple fix.

Answer:Cannot open Task Manager

Hi and Welcome,

NOTE:Malware removal is NOT instantaneous.
Most infections require more than one round to properly eradicate.
Absence of symptoms does not always mean the job is complete.
You can be certain that I will advise you when the computer is clean.
Kindly follow my instructions in the order posted.
Please resist the urge to run further scans or fix items on your own without my direction.

Please do the following:

Please download ComboFix from Here or Here to your Desktop.
**Note:**In the event you already have Combofix, this is a new version that I need you to download. It is important that it is saved and renamed following this process directly to your desktop**If you are using Firefox, make sure that your download settings are as follows:Tools->Options->Main tab
Set to "Always ask me where to Save the files".

During the download, rename Combofix to Combo-Fix as follows:

It is important you rename Combofix during the download, but not after.
Please do not rename Combofix to other names, but only to the one indicated.
Close any open browsers.
Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

Welcome to the BleepingComputer Forums. Since it has been a few days since you scanned your computer with HijackThis, we will need a new HijackThis log. If you have not already downloaded Random's System Information Tool (RSIT), please download Random's System Information Tool (RSIT) by random/random which includes a HijackThis log and save it to your desktop. If you have RSIT already on your computer, please run it again. Double click on RSIT.exe to run RSIT. Click Continue at the disclaimer screen. Please post the contents of log.txt. Thank you for your patience. Please see Preparation Guide for use before posting about your potential Malware problem. If you have already posted this log at another forum or if you decide to seek help at another forum, please let us know. There is a shortage of helpers and taking the time of two volunteer helpers means that someone else may not be helped. Please post your HijackThis log as a reply to this thread and not as an attachment. I am always leery of opening attachments so I always request that HijackThis logs are to be posted as a reply to the thread. I do not think that you are attaching anything scary but others may do so. I've used Spybot to remove all known spyware and I have Norton Anti-virus up to date. I've looked through the forums on this site and others but none seem to help. Heres my HijackThis log:

You have a Trojan. This is the file, or one of them: IRBMe.exe It's a backdoor trojan and I see you have Norton. Must not be updated. www.my-etrust.com/microsoft
Here is more: Troj/Sdbot-FZ is a backdoor Trojan which runs in the background as a service process and allows unauthorised remote access to the computer via IRC channels. The Trojan copies itself to the Windows system folder as irbme.exe and creates the following registry entries so that the Trojan is run when Windows starts up:
HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\
Run Randex virus built for IRBMe = irbme.exe

Hi, having a bit of a problem with my comp, here are the details:

I can't seem to be able to open task manager and some sites that I try to go on it will take me to another site and ask to scan my comp for viruses or w/e and I always exit out.

How it happened:

I was surfing the web and watching videos and it told me that flash player needed update and I was pretty sure I had the latest update but I downloaded it anyway and it was obviously a virus.. It started installing "Fast Antivirus 2009". I tried other sites because this one wouldnt work and it would take me to another site, and now it works for some reason. On other sites (bleepingcomputer i think) i downloaded a program called Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware" and did a quick scan to remove 40 or so malware and it removed the fast antivirus but I still cant open taskmgr and everything is slow and the site problem. heres all the information from what you asked to be posted. I appreciate your guy's help btw doing a great job.

I'm not able to open the task manger or it only stays open for a few seconds and closing. Even HJT gets closed after a few seconds. Both actually works right after the computer boots up but shut down in about 30 seconds. I was able to run a scan before it shut down.

bumpHello scubasteve1985,While we understand your frustration at having to wait, please note that Bleeping Computer deals with several hundred requests for assistance such as yours on a daily basis. As a result, our backlog is quite large, as are other comparable sites that help others with malware issues. Athough our HJT Team members work on hundreds of requests each day, they are all volunteers who work logs when they can and are able to do so. No one is paid by Bleeping Computer for their assistance to our members.Further, our malware removal staff is comprised of team members with various levels of skill and expertise to deal with thousands of malware variants, some more complex than others. Although we try to take DDS/HJT logs in order (starting with the oldest), it is often the skill level of the particular helper and sometimes the operating system that dictates which logs get selected first. Some infections are more complicated than others and require a higher skill level to remove. Without that skill level attempted removal could result in disastrous results. In other instances, the helper may not be familiar with the operating system that you are using, since they use another. In either case, you wouldn't want someone to assist you who is not familiar with your issue and attempt to fix it, would you?We ask that once you have posted your log and are waiting, please DO NOT "bump" your thread or make further replies until it has been responded to by a member o... Well, i don't know what happened, but now when i press CTRL+ALT+DELETE i get the window that has: Logout | Cancel | Task Manager and other various buttons on it. Now i used this for the task manager, so i clicked it. My screen/desktop returned, but the task manager did not open. I Right+Clicked in the bottom right-hand-corner, on the clock, and selected "Task Manager" as well. It did not work. How can i correct this?

This is a very weird thing that is happening.

When I press ctrl + alt + del, I cannot seem to click on my task manager. It's greyed out, meaning I can't access it.

Why does this happen?

By the way, I recently edited my registry but I don't want to switch back to my backup because I made a LOT of changes, and what if that is not the problem.

If it was because I edited something in the registry, please tell me how to fix it.

Either way, please tell me how to fix this problem =D>

Thanks!

You have an outdated version of HijackThis. Click here to get the latest version of HijackThis and run it.

Before you give us a new log here, if we gave you instructions for a fix, please do the fixes first and then post the new log with this updated version.

1. If it gives you an intro screen, just choose 'Do a system scan and save a logfile'.
2. If you don't get the intro screen, just hit Scan and then click on Save log.
3. Get HijackThis Analyzer and save it to the same folder as the hijackthis.log file. Run HijackThis Analyzer and type in y if you agree. The result.txt file will open up in Notepad. Copy the whole result.txt log and post it in the forum. We do not need the original hijackthis.log (unless we ask for it). Do not fix anything in HijackThis since they may be harmless.

When you click on 'All files and folders' on the left pane, click on the 'More advanced options' ... Read more

Hi, I am new and have a very annoying problem.

When I try to open task manager a black box comes up like the cmd, but in a split second it's gone, it said something but it goes away too quick to read so i downloaded a screen video capture program and recorded it, it said "program too big to fit in memory".

I have tried just about every method of opening it, ctrl + shift + delete will not open it, same with right clicking the taskbar, along with every other way I have tried including searching from the start menu for the exe and running it.

I have googled and googled, with no success, the only information i found was a link to a thread on this site - http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=216785

He is the only other person i could find who has the same problem as i do, I have scanned for viruses countless times, nothing.

please help ! - I am running windows 7 Ultimate

Thanks

Answer:Task manager will not open

ctrl + shift + deleteClick to expand...

Wrong combo of keys. It is ctrl + alt + del and in Vista and 7, ctrl + shift + esc will also open it.

Hi and welcome to Bleeping. For the VITAL backup feature of HijackThis to function correctly, you MUST place the program in it's own dedicated folder. At the moment you're running it outside of a dedicated folder in My Received Files.Go to My Computer (Windows key+e), double click on C:Click File > New > FolderName it HijackThis and unzip/move or download the program again to this folder. You have a peper infection amongst others which requires a special removal tool. Hi guys, about an horu ago i downloaded a file which i thought might be dodgy for a game, after opening i realised it wasnt working as i thought it would. I deleted it from desktop and recycle bin respectively then proceeded to check uninstall a programme to see if it was visible there, it was not.

I thenn proceeded to open task manager to see if anything related to it was running however it would not open. After ctrl-alt-del and clicking task manager it goes back to my desktop etc but Task Manager does not open.

I have performed a HijackThis report and this is what i got;

Answer:Cannot Open Task Manager Please Help!

Did you look in your registry editor? The following might help...
HKEY_CURRENT_USER
Key: Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies \System
Name: DisableTaskMgr
Type: REG_DWORD
Value: 1=Enablethis key, that is DISABLE TaskManager
Value: 0=Disablethis key, that is Don't Disable, Enable TaskManager

Possibly your value is set to 1 so it is disabled?

I will leave the HJT log to the experts

Hi all,I have a few new problems in my pc. I can't open the task manager window with Ctrl-alt-del or anyway, I can't open regedit from the run prompt. After installing and removing lime wire it still tries to start itself and throws a java error log continually. The old MSN messenger still connects itself even when I have v7.0 installed and I can't remove it. I guess other things are infected because performance is really poor!!! Answer:Task Manager or CMD Don't open

Run any antivirus or firewall software and your Windows OS is completely unpatched. On top of that, your system is infected with a trojan called Downloader.Agent.awf. It replaces legitimate files that are common on most computers with an infected file. Then, it moves the legitimate files to backup folder.

Answer:task manager does not open on my pc

You need to provide a lot more description about what you can and cannot do in Windows, and any other symptoms you have. Some malware can disable you being able to use Task Manager, but you haven't provided enough info for us to conclude that that's probably your case.Your user (account) probably needs to have administrator rights in order to be able to use Task Manager. All users of XP have administrator rights by default except the optional Guest user which always has limited rights, but someone with administrator rights may have assigned limited rights to your user (account). If you are having problems with your keyboard, or if your keyboard type is set wrong, holding down Ctrl and Alt then pressing Del , letting go of the keys, may not pop up Task Manager. You can also RIGHT click on a blank part of the Taskbar at the bottom of your main desktop screen, and click on Task Manager .If you get an error message that indicates you're not allowed to use Task Manager when you try to use it, either your user (account) has limited rights, or you have malware in Windows.

I've recently had a security guard virus, for a second time... But this one seemed different. I was able to remove it, I think... But now i have these popups on the net and I cant open task manager. unless I do the ''change its name trick, to iexplor.exe'' I saw once. which works.. but ctrl, alt, del still dosnt work...

Also, dont know if this has anything to do with anything, but when I open the internet, my home page is google, but it sends me to a different page asking me to write a weird word so they know im not a malware or whatever...after that Im sent to google...

This is just frustrating... ive tried hijack this, but i cant seem to find anything causing my problems and I need help .... obviously...so...

HEEELLLPPP!!!

Answer:Can't open task manager

Hi,

I suspect the hosts file on your computer has been diddled by the virus to redirect your browser.

Go to this folder C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc and then open the hosts file using Notepad.

You will see several lines prefixed with # (comments).
After that there should only be an entry for local host, as follows:
127.0.0.1 localhost

Remove all other lines, then save the hosts file.

Your browser should then work properly.

Hey guys I'm new here. I registered so I could fix a problem I've been having. My task manager will not open or come up on the screen at all when I press ctrl+alt+delete. This is very frustrating because I need it to close certain processes or my AOL when it won't close manually. If anyone has any reason why this is happening and how to fix it would be greatly, greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Same goes for MS Outlook. Cannot open. No icon in the tray.

I installed Windows Vista Inspirat a few days ago and noticed that I could not open my task manager. I went to the system32 folder of Windows, made a copy and renamed Task Manager as iexplore and wanted to see if executing iexplore launched Task Manager and it DID.

I decided to uninstall Windows Vista Inspirat from its default uninstallation program. It got uninstalled but I'm still unable to open task manager by Ctrl + Alt + Delete or by right clicking the Task bar and selecting Task Manager. The only way I CAN open it is by using the renamed copy of task manager i.e. iexplore. Please tell me what I should do?

Answer:Cannot open Task Manager?

That is the issue. Installing Theme packs are a bad idea some come with malware.

The Bricopack could have damaged (corrupted) Windows Explorer.exe or the task manager files.

Also changing Windows GUI and themes are against Microsoft's EULA.

Try a system restore point to a date before you installed Vista Insprirat and or Bricopack

If system restore is disabled then you defiantly have malware.

My Task manager, Msconfig, Regedit, wont load, and if they do its for a split second then they close. Im not sure why. I dont think it would be viruses, but i dont have any. Can anyone think of why? And if so how to fix that.
Thanks.

Answer:task manager,msconfig wont load

These symptoms have been linked to trojan behaviour.

If you can still nav the 'net, here's what you should do, to eliminate that possibility:

If you haven't already, download, install, update immediately, then run AdawareSE. Make sure to customize the settings in Ad-aware for better scan results.

Then download, install, update immediately Spybot S&D.

Have each fix whatever problems they may find.

Next, run an online virus scan at TrendMicro or RAV Antivirus.
Please select the autoclean option when using Trend Micro.

Then get HijackThis . This program will help us determine if there are any spyware/malware on your computer. Run the scan, save the log, but do not fix anything yet. Many files it finds are harmless, and required for your system to operate.

Post your log in a new thread in the HijackThis Log Help forum. This our dedicated spyware/virus forum. One of the expert analysts there will look over your log and assist you. Please include a brief description of the problem you are having and what you have done to fix it so far.

Hi all,

Im new to the site and hoping someone can help me with this problem. I ran a scan on my laptop with AVG antivirus and accidently selected delete all unhealed problems. I wasnt paying attention when i did it but im sure ive deleted explorer.exe and a bunch of other essential files.

Now when i boot up normally and try to login the computer instantly logs back out again, and when i boot in safe mode only the background appears and i cant access the task manager. To add to the complications my internal cd drive is broken so i cant use a boot cd and there is no floppy drive.

any help would be greatly appreciated.

thanks,
Keith

Hi Tech support guy, a sneaky virus has got into my laptop and it wont let me open the task manager. When I press ctrl/alt/delete the task manager flashes up and disappears. Ive tried all the methods other than ctrl/alt/delete and none of them work. Also CCleaner wont work. Ive tried also to go into safe mode and it starts to load but then freezes. I noticed this strange file on my laptop: Ikeext.etl. Ive deleted it but I still have problems. Ive run AVG virus a couple of times and nothing came up. I also ran an online virus scanner from Trend Micro and that also didnt find anything. But I know it still must be there because my computer isnt working properly. Im using Windows 7 - 64bit.

I have run both Spybot and Adaware and both have fixed multiple problems but for some reason I can never get my task manager to open up and for a while I couldn't delete a program called win-dh from my add/remove programs list. Every time I clicked delte it would reappear. Also when I run all of these programs in safe mode it keeps deleting them but the programs keep recreating registry entries and starting all over again. SO yeah any and all help would be appreciated. Everytime I try to run HJT it closes automatically and it does the same to my Task Manager and Regedit I am getting extremly frustrated.

PS. this is not my computer I am fixing it for a family at my church.

Answer:Cant get Task manager or Regedit to open

Click here to download HJTsetup.exe: http://www.thespykiller.co.uk/files/HJTSetup.exe
Save HJTsetup.exe to your desktop.

Double click on the HJTsetup.exe icon on your desktop.
By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Hijack This.
Continue to click Next in the setup dialogue boxes until you get to the Select Addition Tasks dialogue.
Put a check by Create a desktop icon then click Next again.
Continue to follow the rest of the prompts from there.
At the final dialogue box click Finish and it will launch Hijack This.
Click on the Do a system scan and save a log file button. It will scan and then ask you to save the log.
Click Save to save the log file and then the log will open in notepad.
Click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" to copy the entire contents of the log.
Come back here to this thread and Paste the log in your next reply.
DO NOT have Hijack This fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.
