USB devices not recognized by Windows 7

Question: USB devices not recognized by Windows 7

I have aproblem with the USB ports on my laptop. Whenever I plug in a device to any of the 4 ports on my laptop, I get this "device not recognized by Windows 7" I have tried all kinds of remedies, like uninstalling and reinstalling the drivers for USB. Also I have done a Windows 7 repair as well as a system restore, and I get the same error. What could be wrong??

Preferred Solution: USB devices not recognized by Windows 7

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hello All,

I am using Microsoft Vista SP2.I have Mcafee On Access Scan and Malware Bytes.

Several days ago, I plugged my flashdrive in my USB port and an error message came up: "Windows does not recognized this device." At first I thought my flashdrive went out. So I tried another flashdrive, same thing happened. I also plugged in my Ipod, and the system did not recognized it either. My ports were working fine just a week ago.

I do know that I have a trojan virus because Mcafee deleted one several days ago. However, the program is not doing enough.Obviously, the virus deleted the USB drivers. I can still charge things (like my ipod), but I cannot actually use it.

Does anybody have an idea of how to get my USB ports working again? Thank you so much!

I know this isn't a Win7 forum, but it applies to any Windows OS. After installing Windows 7, I've got three defivices listed in the Device Manager under Other Devices as the drivers aren't installed. Done a full Windows Update, looked a screenshots I made of all the items in Programs & Features from the original Vista x64 build when I got it from Lenovo to make sure I've installed everything I need, but still nothing. How can you tell what the devices are as they are listed as "Base System Device" (two of those) and "PCI Simple Communications Controller". I don't have any issues, but would like to know what these are and get the drivers for them (or at least see if Win7 drivers are available). Ideas?

Hi. I am really hoping someone can help me with this as I've had no luck anywhere else.  Here's the trouble:  anything I plug into my computer (kindle, external hard drive, etc.) is only partially recognized by my computer but is unable to be accessed in any way. For example, when I attach my kindle, the computer recognizes it insofar as it dings and shows the icon to 'safely remove hardware' but when I go to remove the hardware it does not appear there, nor is it shown under 'my computer' where usually I can gain access to any device.  I have followed all the standard instructions for when a device is not recognized at all, but in this case it doesn't do anything, as the computer is somehow recognizing something but not all of it (the drivers for the devices are there). I am hoping that it is just a simple software thing, perhaps I deleted something accidentally. But until I fix this I can't transfer books to my new and empty kindle and I can't backup any of my files. Please oh please help!Thank you,Lauren

Okay, so I bought a new mobo and processor, as it was time to upgrade from the Duron 800 to get some decent performance for video editing.

I bought an ECS K7S5A Pro mobo and an Athlon XP 2200+ Tbred and a 512 MB stick of DDR. I got everything home, hooked it up, and it will POST but will not detect any IDE devices. I have a WD 60 GB HD, an older Maxtor 8 GB HD, and a CD-RW. I have the 60GB set up as the single drive on IDE 1 and the CD-RW as the master on IDE 2 with the 8 GB as the slave on IDE 2.

I checked to see if there was a newer BIOS, and what is on there is te most recent. I checked, double-checked, and triple checked the power and IDE cables--everything's seated properly. None of the IDE devices will spin upon power-up if the IDE cable is connected. However, all of them spin up properly if I disconnect the IDE cables. I have racked my brain to try and figure this out, but I am at a loss. I thought I might have a mobo with a defective IDE controller--swapped it out and had the same problem. Thought maybe I was REALLY unlucky and got two in a row and swapped again, and nothing.

Please help--I am at my wit's end and on the verge of having to take it somewhere to have it looked at or *gasp* buy a ready-made system and start from scratch.

Thanks for any help you can provide!

All of a sudden today when i got home from school, went to go get some of my bank information off my USB flash drive and external hard drive and windows says they arent recognized or malfunctioning. Ive tried using my USB Hub, front ports, and back ports. Neither of them work. I went and used the same Flash Drive on several of my other computers and it works just fine.Searched the internet for a while now and found nothing but junk about how ppl fixed it, for example, by using the ports in the back instead of the front.

Hey all.

I think I have me a hardware problem System Specs:

ASUS P4P800SE Motherboard
80GB S-ATA HDD
ATI Radeon 9550 PRO
1GB Kingston DDR400
Intel Pentium 4 3GhZ Extreme Edition w/ Hyper Threading

Lately, only one or two of my eight USB ports have been working. For all of the others, I plug the device in and it says that the USB Device Malfunctioned or was Not Recognized (http://dan.hersam.com/images/usb-flash-drive-error.png <-- that's not my screenshot, but its a sample of the error I get).

I have a 4GB linux drive as well running Fedora Core 4. I booted it up and same issue, the USB ports don't work. So today I reformatted and the same thing. So I think I have a hardware issue. But what's really weird is one of my USB inputs is on a PCI card. One of the two ports on that card works, and the other doesn't. I'm very confused.

This motherboard is just over a year old and I've checked the USB port connections directly onto it. Does anybody have any suggestions?

Thanks,

Kevin

A while back my computer was struck by lightning. After that I have trouble with my USB ports. I had to return to using PS 2 serial ports for my devices. Now I can get a USB MP3 player to work but nothing else. None of the USB ports work and only a few receive power. I have tried installing new drivers and chip sets as well. I have tried uninstalling all drivers and reinstalling, Rebooting, and reinstalling drivers. I have even tried a new PCI usb hub card and those ports do not work. Its getting kind of rediculous. I have spent long hours researching and trying to fix this problem. The puter is not old and is in very good condition with high proccessing speeds. I am humble enough to learn so please grace me with your knowledge... psycoscythe

Try this:Use the Device Manager to scan for new hardware. Follow these steps: 1. Click Start, and then click Run. 2. Type Devmgmt.msc in the Open box, and then click OK. 3. On the Action menu, click Scan for hardware changes. This causes Windows to recognize new devices. 4. Close Device Manager and Control Panel.

To give you some background -

I have a Toshiba Satellite laptop running Windows XP SP 3. Around a week ago, I found the Confickr virus on the laptop, so I used MalwareBytes to remove it, which appears to have done the job. However, since this happened, my USB devices are no longer recognized by my PC. I've tried all three hubs on the computer and have had no luck with any of them. The devices (I've tried two different USB flash drives and my digital camera) all worked fine before, but none are being recognized now. The devices get power when plugged into any of the ports, so I don't think the power is the problem; however, Windows isn't recognizing them as it usually does (i.e. assigning a drive to them in Windows Explorer). So, I tried my Zune, which doesn't get a drive assigned to it; the first couple of times I plugged it in, I got the "A USB device has exceeded the power limits of its hub" message. Afterwards, the Zune appears to work correctly (i.e. I can sync it with the Zune software and it appears to work fine); however, it doesn't appear to be charging the Zune at all, which it usually does.

To investigate this further, I checked Device Manager to see if there any issues listed with the USB Controllers. All of the controllers and hubs say they are functioning properly, according to their "Device Status" information. I've checked all three of the hubs in Device Manager, to make sure that the "Allow the com... Read more

In short, just as the title says... none of my USB devices will be recognized. Two different external hard-drives, one of which I just bought today, my iPod, my printer... nothing. Except... for my mouse and keyboard. Both are USB, and both work perfectly. It makes no sense, and this is the case no matter which device is plugged into which port. I am completely lost. Anything aside from the mouse and keyboard I plug in just comes up as "Unknown Device". I know these devices all work, as they function perfectly plugged into another computer.

We have a toshiba a135 s2276 with vista home and aToshiba laptop with XP. All USB devices work on the XP machine. The two devices in question are a Zune and a new digital camera. There is a wireless USB mouse that works fine and a USB printer that is fine. When the Zune or Camera are plugged in it says USB device connected loading driver and then says not recognized. We have searched Zune Help and worked with the MS people to no avail. On the Toshiba site most people have tried a reinstall with no success. The best we have found is to get a PCMCIA USB card and try that. Anyone had similar problems.

Is the Vista machine 32 bit or 64 bit? I've had problems trying to run 32 bit programs on my 64 bit vista laptop. You need to have drivers specifically for 64 bit for some hardware.

Can you download the Zune software from Microsoft directly onto the vista laptop?

I took over my PC from Directweb(now B2000.net) and I reformatted the disk in order to get rid of all their controls and tried to start new load of Windows98. The only trouble is that I can't get Windows to recognize any of my external devices;
not the sound card, not the modem, and the Display only has two color options.
I have tried to go through Add HDW and nothing I try works.
The system came with a CD containing device drivers for the three items above, but when I go thru the "Have Disk" option, I get an immediste respons that "specified location doesn't contain info about your hdw". It always returns to aprompt with the A drive as rhe specified disk, and it doesn't appear to try the D drive that I specify.
I tried inserting another sound card, but merely got the same results.

I have a 32-bit windows vista and I've had this problem a couple times before. Whenever I put my computer to sleep for over an hour, it forgets anything that's plugged into the USB drives: the keyboard, speakers, the mouse, etc. and it pops up with a toolbar message saying, "USB devices not recognized." I then have to restart the computer to get them to function again. I really have no idea why this is happening but I think the problem MIGHT have started with my Wabcom Bamboo Pen software that I recently installed. Any help or suggestions?

Hi, I just have a question. I installed a new HDD and some RAM so I installed Windows XP Professional x64 to use the full amount of RAM (4 GB) that I have installed. As of now, my ThinkPad x61 does not detect my wireless device and it does not detect the sound device. I have installed the drivers on the Lenovo Support and Downloads page but it is still not recognized. Other than these devices there are a few other devices in the list without the proper description to let me know exactly what types of devices they are. In addition to the above problem, I wanted to ask if there is any way that I can reinstate the AHCI mode to make the full use of the new SATA drive that I had upgraded the laptop with. The SATA before my new installation was working fine in AHCI mode. Please let me know if there is an option without reinstalling the OS but if the only option is to reinstall the OS, please walk me through the process. I know that it has something to do with F6 in installing the SCSI and the RAID drivers but let me know more.    Thank you! Moderator note: Type added to subject line for clarity.  Message Edited by Agotthelf on 27-04-2009 09:13 AM

First of all, Lenovo does not provide support for XP x64. However, since this is a Lenovo community [remember, this is not an official Lenovo support channel] and we may be able to help you. Could you kindly provide us with the Hardware Id for the devices in question? Open the Device Manager.Double-Click on the device.Go to the "Details" tab.Select "Hardware Ids" from the drop-down box. Message Edited by ortegaluis on 05-28-2009 01:43 PM

I have a Toshiba Satellite A660-13T latptop. Recently it stopped recognizing all USB devices. I have tried all 3 ports and different devices such as iPhone, USB key, mouse and an external hard drive. It charges my iPhone but it does not show up anywhere on the computer. I have tried: unistalling all the USB drives and rebooting, using a knoppix image cd to start my laptop on linux to see if it recognizes USB devices which it doesn't, running a full scan of my computer...(these are all suggestions from various people). I've had some problems with overheating so I fear that there may have been an internal 'melt-down' and it's a hardware, not a software issue but I just want to exhaust all options before I have to buy a new laptop...

I have spent so much time on this and have not gotten anywhere. hopefully someone can help.

my computer is running windows xp pro with service pack 1. a while ago, my firewire port stopped recognizing devices that i plug in (my sony video camera and all 3 of my external hard drives). i switched firewire cards, but that didn't work either.

device manager is currently telling me that the OHCI Compliant IEEE 1394 Host Controller driver is working properly. but when i plug in one of the devices, nothing happens.

i'm currently using a sound blaster Audigy 2 Platinum (http://support.creative.com/Products...=Sound+Blaster) as my firewire port. i just got the most recent drivers from create labs. (although i think it doesn't matter, from what i've read, firewire drivers are built into XP and aren't included with the soundblaster's install software)

I've tried different devices, different cords, and different firewire cards and have had the same results with everything. so i'm assuming that the problem is with the PC since that is the only constant.

does anyone have any ideas? any help would be greatly appreciated.

OK,

Last night my sound was fine. This morning I had to hardkill my computer. When it started again, my sound would not work. Mousing over the sound icon in the tray said no sound devices were plugged in, even though they are. When I go to the audio tab in control panel devices are there but are grayed out. I tried reinstalling realtek HD drivers. They seemed to install correctly, but still same problem. Checked BIOS and sound is enabled. Tried installing generic Windows drivers but that did not work either. When I try to open Realtek sound manager, I get an error that says dirver is Vista only. But driver download is for XP/7/8/Vista versions. When I look at the file on my drive, it looks there are folder for vista, but not Windows 7 (my OS).

If I go control panel I can see the audio devices, but they are grayed out. Have run reg scans and virus scans but still nothing.

hello,

i'm working on an hp pavilion laptop with a 1.3 GHz celeron processor running windows xp home 2002 sp2 (this computer).

a few days ago the computer started having problems recognizing certain peripherals when i connect them via usb. the devices in question are:

a. an external maxtor hdd.
b. an ipod.

all the other usb-connected devices (windows-based palm device, printer, thumb drive, 2 cd drives, keyboard, mouse) are being recognized just fine.

i've rebooted numerous times, re-installed i-tunes (for the ipod), and even did a system restore (which took) and still the problem remains. i checked the device manager for any issues - i've got a couple of video driver issues in there, but the usb controllers look fine (no yellow triangles). i don't see a way to uninstall/re-install the usb controllers anyway.

i have absolutely NO IDEA what might be causing this. i was hoping that perhaps one of you fine folks may be able to help me out. i miss listening to my randi rhodes show downloads! and i really do need to get at my backup drive, too.

thank you in advance!

This has been happening for years, but I'm not sure if it's been happening since I first got the computer.  Certain USB devices, namely ALL my flash drives and USB printer, aren't recognized until I restart the computer, while others like my tablet pen work all the time.  When I plug in my flash drive, it makes the sound effect it does when the computer recognizes something, but there is no way to open the folder.  My printer will also say it's not connected when I know it is.  Very rarely, I'll actually get the "USB device not recognized" error popup in the lower right corner. The problem seems to happen after the computer has been on for a while but I'm not noticing anything in particular that might be triggering it.

So while I'm on this site working on my own comp, I figured I try for some help with my sister's boyfriend's comp. He is a doctor, and his work comp had some fairly basic issues regarding him poorly implementing a "free" windows upgrade. At this point he simply needs to get it restored to it's working condition, as patient files and some very expensive medical software are on this machine. I told him it wouldn't be too much trouble to simply undo or fix whatever he messed up. Unfortunately, when I got the machine and hooked it up(took some digging around in my pile of cords to even find a VGA cable ), none of my input devices worked. After some fiddling around, I came to the conclusion that it was probably an issue of how old his relic was in comparison to my shiny new custom built desktop, seeing as how all my components are USB 2.0 PnP, and his relic has stickers boasting about USB 1.0. I have spent so much time on this and have not gotten anywhere. hopefully someone can help.

my computer is running windows xp pro with service pack 1. a while ago, my firewire port stopped recognizing devices that i plug in (my sony video camera and all 3 of my external hard drives). i switched firewire cards, but that didn't work either.

device manager is currently telling me that the OHCI Compliant IEEE 1394 Host Controller driver is working properly. but when i plug in one of the devices, nothing happens.

i'm currently using a sound blaster Audigy 2 Platinum (http://support.creative.com/Products/ProductDetails.aspx?catID=1&subCatID=205&prodID=150&prodName=Audigy%202%20Platinum&subCatName=Audigy&CatName=Sound+Blaster) as my firewire port. i just got the most recent drivers from create labs.

On my Windows XP with SP2 installed system, my ipod and iphone are recognized as USB 1.0 devices. The bubble in the bottom right corner pops up with the message telling me the device can perform faster if I plug it into a hi-speed port.

My system has 10USB ports on the MB, all of them 2.0. I have tried two cables, and have tried different USB ports. I have attached some screenshots that may be helpful to anyone interested in helping. My system info is:

i recently restarted my laptop to complete an update for my blackberry desktop software installation.everything was working fine before the restart- after the restart, my USB wireless network wouldn't connect to my home network (usually does this automatically) so i unplugged it and plugged it back in, and windows wouldn't recognize it.since then i've noticed that my USB ports don't appear to be functioning properly- whatever i plug in to any ports, windows doens't detect.the wireless adapter shows up under device manager, but if i try unintalling it (or removing it using the icon for removeable devices in the system tray) it doesn't get uninstalled/removed, and device manager crashes when trying to do the uninstall.i've also noticed that windows won't completely shut down or restart now- it gets past the "Windows shutting down" message then stays at the windows xp background/wallpaper (not a BSOD) until i hold the power button down to turn off the laptop.after researching this a bit, i've tried uninstalling the USB host controller drivers (USB root hub) from device manager, but again device manager crashes in the process.anyone have any ideas as to what might be causing these issues?i'm using windows xp pro, sp3 with the latest windows updates.thanks!

I have a Dell Studio which is about 6 years old. It came initially with Windows 7 and I'm running Windows 7 Ultimate right now. About four days ago my computer stopped recognizing my usb mouse. I would have it plugged in and using it, walk away for a minute, and come back and it wouldn't work. I unplugged and replugged it in a few times and it worked. Then it did it again and wouldn't work no matter what I did, in any of the ports. I tried multiple other mice and usb devices and the computer won't recognize any of them. Finally, I reinstalled windows 7, thinking there was a problem with the registry or something, and it started working again. I went through the hours of updating and reinstalling some of my stuff then this morning the same thing is happening again. It won't recognize devices.

I went to Dell website and updated all my drivers, my bios and chipsets. I've restarted repeatedly. I've checked the USB section on device management and tried to find any problem area but there is none. I've run dell diagnostic and windows diagnostic and all say they can't figure out the problem. I'm stuck. What am I supposed to do? I've tried unplugging the power supply, removing the battery, doing basically everything that came to mind. I really need some help and ideas on how I could fix this. It's really frustrating me. I wiped my computer and went through all those hours of work just for it to mess up again today and I'm very annoyed. Thanks in advance for any help.

I have become very frustrated with this problem.

Out of the blue my win 7 Ultimate SP1 will not recognize CERTAIN USB devices plugged in the rear ports (I have 2 in the front, 4 in the rear). I get the "device not recognized " pop up.

The strange thing is, all the the devices that I plug into the front 2 USB ports are recognized and work. I know the rear ports are functioning because when i plug in my scanner, or my flash drive, they work. However when i plug in my HP printer or my logitech mouse (which both work in the front ports), it says they are unrecognized.

I have scoured the forums and have tried numerous things; unplugging power, uninstalling drivers, taking out MB battery, resetting CMOS, etc. All with no luck.

I really cant imagine how my mouse can work in the front usb port but will not work in the rear one, in which my flash drive & USB-powered scanner work.

Hello Phil, welcome to the forum

Do you get any error codes?

Try doing the following;

General USB problems
Click on start orb, Type Advanced System settings in the search box and click to go there.
Click on Advanced tab, Click on Enviroment Variables.
Under the window System variables click on New.
Type " devmgr_show_nonpresent_devices" (without the ") as the variable name and type 1 as the value.
Click ok 3 times to close the windows
Click on start orb, Type Device Manager in the search box and click to go there.
Click on View, Click on Show hidden devices.
Now you can uninstall all old and unknown USB devices.
Open windows Explorer go to computer in the menu bar, Search for infcache.1 and delete it
If it still does not work remove all USB devices and then uninstall the USB controller(s) followed by a new start

Answer:Firewire devices not recognized

No. Noting that would be clear and simple. There are  a lot, I mean a LOT of malicious software out there. One trick they do is to mess with your drivers in such a way that you can not fix it until you really get rid of the malicious software. If you ever do. Personally, I have had little results using conventional wisdom in getting rid of such @#$%.  Short of erasing the system and starting all over again. If the devices do work on another system, suspect malicious software. Software drivers  don't just 'wear out' like hardware devices. But if it is hardware, the only solution is to replace the bad stuff.

This error persisted through 2 fresh installs, even though the device manager shows all of my USB devices as functioning at all times. However, I do see an entry under the "Universal Serial Bus controllers" tab with a yellow ! triangle, with a description of "Unknown USB Device (Device Descriptor Request Failed)"

I can't remember exactly how this happened because it's been a cascading disaster. It started with my efforts to uninstall Crashplan. In the course of this I unplugged one usb drive (I have 6) from a hub while it was on. At the time everything seemed ok, but it was not the case once I shut down and rebooted.

I have usb 2 ports and usb 3 ports along with an old usb card which works fine for a laser printer, scanner etc.

Now in a situation where not a single usb drive is recognized except for the yellow exclamation in device manager. Drive properties all say "A driver (service) for this device has been disabled. An alternate driver may be providing this functionality. (Code 32)". After researching this and talking with Asus, I was told to reinstall the NEC USB drivers, and to reinstall the Intel Chip software. When this didn't work I followed instructions on the net and first uninstalled the devices, shut down, and rebooted letting Windows find the "right" drivers. Windows appeared to replace the same drivers in device manager and continues to be unable to recognize a single USB 2 or 3 drive whether it is plugged directly into the machine or into the internal card or either external hub. At the same time, all these usb ports recognize my mouse, my keyboard, my laser printer, battery backup and more.

I've tried the uninstall, shut down and let windows install several times and Asus quickly lost interest and offered to RMA the board which is n... Read more

Im having a problem with my devices that im connecting not being able to be accessed in my computer. Since last month ive been having problems with my itunes totally not recognizing my ipod ever sinced i sync'd my iphone to it. It is shown on "My computer" as Marks Ipod but whenever i open up itunes it shows as no ipod connected. When i switch out to my iphone it comes up and im able to sync normally. Ive tried replacing the ipod, reloading itunes. The problem i think i see is that on my device manager it recognizes my ipod as a mass storage device but on the iphone it shows "iphone".

Shortly after i just decided to get another computer, so before that i wanted to transfer my music etc to disc and heres the 2nd problem, when i try to copy them to cd the icon on my My Computer for the CD drive is red with a slash going through it.

Today i bought a 250gb freeagent drive to save my files before switching computers. I plug that into the USB and it reads it but when the prompt comes out saying windows can run the program provided on device, open folder to view files, or take no action, nothing happens when i say to "run the program" it just exits. Also when i choose open folder it says E: is not accessible.

Im really stuck at this time with no ideas, i hope someone can shed some light on this issue. Thanks

Hi,
When I plug a USB into any of my USBports my computer is unable to find the appropriate drivers to locate and use the USB. My laptop recognises the USB but continually tells me that it is searching for the driver and then after 5-10mins it says that it was unsuccessful at installing the necessary driver. I have tried updating all my USB drivers manually but I get a message saying that they are all up to date.

Any advice on how to fix this problem would be greatly appreciated.

I just installed a new PCI USB 2.0 card into my machine. I have a Line 6 Toneport UX8 that connects to the PC by USB as the interface for microphones and instruments. Because of the high volume of data coming down the pipe from this external interface it is pretty much a 'mandatory recommendation' to use a dedicated USB controller in a PCI slot.

Anyway, I installed the PCI card just fine but when I plug in the UX8 to it, Windows 7 reports 'USB device not recognized'. It is recognized if I plug it into one of the motherboard's USB slots though. I need to use this PCI card, otherwise the recording quality is useless. I know other people have this external interface and run it into a dedicated PCI/USB controller with great results. So I am hoping someone here can suggest what I can do to get W7 to recognize the card and the USB devices plugged into it.

I'm hoping I don't have to reinstall the OS since it will be a pain to have to reinstall again when the commercial licenses come out in less than a month (I'm assuming I'll have to reinstall since I will be using an upgrade from my XP Pro that I have not used since trying out this W7 RC).

TIA

Yeah, sorry about the title, I tried to make it as informative as possible.

I'm asking for help. I've searched around the net for ages to try to find answers to this issue, but I can't find anything that matches my problem exactly.

My computer has issues with usb storage drivers I think. All usb stick thingys don't work. And they do work on every other computer I've tested them on... which is probably around six or so. Whenever I plug them in, it comes up with that very unhelpful message that says that "USB not recognised", and when I check the device manager, it comes up with Unknown Device.

Also, when I plug in an MP3 player, they are only read half of the time. The other half, they do the same rubbish that occurrs with my USB things...

My printer and keyboard both work fine, so I know it isn't a problem with my hardware. Well, maybe it could be a problem with my PSU, but it is a 550W, and I'm sure that my components aren't draining that much power.

Finally, my 7-in-1 card reader isn't recognised by vista most of the time. When it is finally recognised and the drives show up in My Computer, but when I put an SD card in or something, nothing happens.

I'm running Windows Vista Ultimate, which was upgraded from a buggy version of Home Basic Lite edition. And, if I can't get this fixed, I'll format my computer, but I don't really want to resort to that.

The update should have made a Restore Point to undo it. Run the last Restore Point to see if it gets it back to the previous state.

Edit: You may ned to borrow a PS/2 keyboard or USB to PS/2 adapter to input anything. The PS/2 support should be built in the firmware.

I am posting this solution now but I fixed it many months ago. My disgust with Lenovo's arrogant and untrained phone support along with problems on other Lenovo machines have me posting here now as a "stranded user" helping others, not someone speaking for myself as part of a community of people believing in a brand. Lenovo you have abused in a hundred ways your reputation of quality by providing abysmal support for customers paying massive premiums for an illusion of quality. For many months after purchasing my X300 for which I paid about $3000 USD by the way, I could not get a range of USB devices recognized. Some worked, some didn't. The Blackberry Storm wouldn't be recognized but a Blackberry 8830 could be. A USB 2.0 hub could not be  but all many forms of USB thumb drives could. After reinstalling the chipset and other myriad of issues and calling support to speak to a poorly trained, arrogant technician who explained if any USB device works, it's my problem, and I should reinstall the operating system if I didn't like that tone along with refusals to connect me to a supervisor, I finally found the solution through my own research. Now I want to point out I have a BS and MS in electrical engineering and can read the bits and bytes of this across the wire. In fact, I used a USB analyzer to try to troubleshoot this. I don't believe however that with proper support any of that would have been necessary. In the end I don't remember all the troublesho... Read more

Answer:A solution for X300 USB devices not recognized problems

I am posting this information for more technical folks. As i previously mentioned, the simple solution is discovering if your usb.inf is missing or corrupted and, if so, replacing it with one from another machine. For those that are more technical and interested in learning how to do deep USB or device driver troubleshooting, Microsoft has a lesser known log file that is exceptionally well documented called the SetupAPI Log File located under the windows directory (c:\windows\setupapi.log) . In a rare example of traditional and complete documentation, Microsoft has fully documented this log file in a well done Word document. See this document and Microsoft summary at http://www.microsoft.com/whdc/driver/install/setupapilog.mspx This log provides details on USB and device driver behavior in your machine that you will never discover any other way and not nearly as well. Lenovo's support desk and forum moderators here should all be trained on this log file in my opinion. It provides a tremendous source of information and understanding it, and the messages that appear in it, give one good insight into the true innerworkings of USB and driver behavior giving a better shot at solving many of the kinds of issues I see posted in these forums.

W10 driver issues galore ! Hello all, with new OS comes new problems right ? well it's the same old song and dance, new os, no one's ready, same old "driver could not be found" problems.  First it's the brightness slider issue (monitor driver). then it's the intel engine management v11 driver that won't let the computer turn off. it exits windows but the fans and lights stay on. Now it's 2 high definition audio devices, 1 not recognized by windows10. The error in device manager is code 10: device could not start. it is the same driver and version as the other audio device below it. if i delete it, it comes back at next boot or if i scan for new hardware.if i try to update it via the update button, windows update has nothing.if i disable it in device manager, i still have sound from the speakers. so there's that. This laptop needs new drivers certified by Acer. the old drivers from last year are just too buggy. Another oyvé!

I'm not too sure when this started to happen as I don't use many USB devices. But whenever I try to connect a USB device, Keyboard/Mouse, External HDD, flash drive, Media Center remote, camera, etc etc Windows will make the sound as if a new device was plugged in and then proceed to tell me its an unknown device and thats the end of the story.

I've tried to look for chipset drivers for my AMD 690G but there doesnt seem to be any? It used to work, so IDK.

I've tried reinstalling Vista.. countless times and set BIOS back to default just in case, nothing.

Any ideas guys?

And NO going back to XP is not an option, I'm quite happy with Vista, actually happier than I was with XP.

Thanks in advance.

I recently switched over from a macbook pro (snow leopard) to an hp envy dv6 with windows 8 on it. My Fantom GreenDrive worked fine on the mac, and on another pc before. The new laptop makes a detection noise when I turn it on and plug it in, but it does not show up anywhere but in devices. I can't access my backed up files, it's pretty bad news if I can't get them back. I tried downloading the driver for the fantom drive, but no luck. Anyone know how to fix this?

Go into disk manager and assign it a drive letter.

Hi,in my company we use X240 (model number: 20AQ0064GE and 20AQ0075GE) and T440s (model number: 20AL007NGE and 20AL00C3GE). Moreover we are using Windows 7 Enterprise x64 and a hard drive encryption from McAfee (Endpoint Encryption for PC) with the version 5.2.12. Before the operating system is starting, the users have to logon to the hdd encryption with their username, password and an eToken (from Aladdin). The eToken is plugged into a usb port like a regular usb stick. With the models mentioned above there is a strange issue, that after every restart the eToken is no longer recognized. It does not make any difference if the eToken is plugged in during restart or it is plugged in the restart happened. Moreover USB mouses are without fuctionn, too, but they get power, so that the LED oder laser at the button is on. On the other hand USB keyboard are working properly. The only solution is, that the users have to shut down their notebook by pressing the power button and turn it on again. After this eToken and mouse are recognized normally. We have a lot oft he new devices (X240 and T440s) and every single notebooks has this issue. We have installed the lasted version of the bios (T440s 2.29 and X240 2.26). With the models we used previously and still currently (T420/T430 and X220/X230) there is and was not such issues. For this reason I would exclude the hdd encryption and the operation system. Is this problem already known?

Answer:T440s / X240 USB devices after reboot not recognized

I noticed you are using 2012 version of McAfee EEPC on 2014 ThinkPad.  Have you tried the latest version of EEPC?  It should be your first step to troubleshoot this.

If the problem still happens using the latest version of EEPC, then I recommend that you contact McAfee for support on this problem.  They are experts at debugging USB handoff issues that can happen between BIOS/encryption/OS.  I believe there are some settings within EEPC that might help.  And if McAfee finds an issue that needs support from Lenovo, then they know how to get in touch with us.

Hi,

with my older notebook, a Satellite 5005-S504, I have just recently some trouble with the USB ports. None of the three ports is detecting either USB device. The device manager does not indicate any problem on the host controllers or the root hubs.

I'm running Windows XP, SP3 and there was no recent update to be identified as the root cause for this malfunction.

Any hint out there?
Is there a driver available which could help?

Thanks in advance!

TH

Answer:Satellite 5005-S504 - USB devices are not recognized

Hello

Are the USB ports listed in device manager or not?
If yes I would try to remove them and restart the notebook. After this the ports will be installed automatically again.

If it doesn?t work you can try to update the chipset driver. Have a look on Toshiba website to download it.

Hello!

I found out that any USB device (flash drives, HDDs) I connect to my PC isn't recognized. I have Logitech G700 mouse and S520 keyboard that are connected to random USB ports and they work fine. I even have PCI-e USB3.0 card and even on there, devices are not working. Everything I try shows up in device management under "other devices" and has driver warning. Searching for drivers (updating) doesn't find anything.

Any help is greatly appreciated!

ThinkPad T61 (7659D22) I just acquired a brand-new-looking Advanced Docking Station (250310U) but find that neither my second HDD (Hitachi 500GB SATA in UltraBay SATA adapter) nor the optical drive is recognized when plugged into the UltraBay port on the Docking Station. Devices have power, as I can tell because the optical drive's tray pops out when I press the button and the HDD LED illuminates. USB devices aren't recognized in XPI've done the unplug from wall, checked Device Manager, etc...Guessing it's a BIOS issue?

Answer:USB devices aren't recognized. Icons no show in My Computer'

If those same USB devices used to work without problem on that PC, it's unlikely to be a BIOS issue. Also bear in mind, some USB devices need third party driver software installing before Windows will recognise them (eg Printer, Scanner, Cellphone, USB sound adapter, etc) if it's a device that WinXP has no built-in suitable driver for it.

Hello! I have a desktop computer and several days ago my old 500W power supply burnt out (from overheating I suppose) while the computer was on. I replaced it with a new one, 750W, but when I turned it on everything was working properly except for the fact that no USB devices were recognized. I have 2 USB 2.0 front ports and four rear ones. Power reaches all of them, since LEDs on devices connected light up, but OS does not indicate any devices being connected. I tried switching off the PC from the mains, pressing and holding the power button, even removed the battery on the motherboard and reset the BIOS settings. Nothing changed. I have a dual-boot PC with Windows 7 and Gentoo Linux. Neither of the two operating systems give any errors concerning the USB ports and neither recognizes anything plugged in. My PC is:
MB: ASUS P5B
CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo @ 2.33 GHz
HDD: Samsung HD403LJ ATA 400 GB
I don't have a USB keyboard nor a mouse to try and see if they work during BIOS boot. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Answer:Solved: Power reaches USB ports, but no devices are recognized.

Purchased a brand new Asus USB-BT211 bluetooth dongle with the express goal of connecting a wiimote to my new computer. the machine runs Windows 7 x64, the drivers for the dongle install without a problem, and the bluetooth searching mode on the "add a device" screen appears to be running without a hitch.

when i place the wiimote into sync mode (holding down the red button), it never appears to be visible to the computer, and doesn't show up on the add a device screen. When I attempt this procedure with either of my other two laptop computers, (running Windxows Vista x86) using the same dongle, the wiimote syncs without a problem and can be used with other utilities such as glovePIE and JoyToKey and Dolphin.

So, tell me, Why is it that Windows 7 refuses to see the wiimote when i try to make the connection?

Thanks!

Woke up this morning to find my HP stuck in a boot up mode with a message about it being unable to find any storage devices...tried safe mode (F8) but no luck...would not boot into safe mode...can not get into BIOS...F2, F10, F11 all not working...only thing that had a glimmer of hope was inserting the HP recovery disc (1 of 3) I made then restarting...seemed to work a bit as the screen changed and it said "loading windows files" but then nothing...subsequent reboots with same disc went unrecognized...even tried booting using Hiren's Boot CD but it seems like the machine is not recognizing ANY bootable drive...HDD or CD/DVD.

Answer:Unable to boot into any mode...storage devices not recognized

Most likely a power supply failure, that's a non-servicable part except by the manufacturer, so it's one you replace. [can hold a charge and possibly KILL you if opened up]

Any PC repair shop near you can verify that the PSU is croaked in a minute, with a PSU tester which you can buy for $20ish.

Rosewill RTK-PST Digital LCD Power Supply Tester - Newegg.com

PC is acting like it doesn't have the juice to run the parts, just so much more likely PSU dead, eliminate that before moving on, hopefully it didn't damage anything else.

Hello. It seems I've gotten myself into hot water again somehow with no idea how to fix it after surfing for answers for a while now. It's just too confusing for me to sort out all of the possible problems/solutions/situations/applicable possibilities...

In short, due possibly to an incompatible game I was trying to play, my computer display went wonky. Now when I look at the display adaptor it lists VGA and not my GeForce card. As an example, I'm pasting my dxdiag from a couple of weeks ago (which shows my card) and my current dxdiag which shows the vga adaptor.

I forgot to mention and am editing to say that there is a new bios message that flashes upon restarting computer but it is SO FAST I can't read a single word. I do know that prior to this evening no messages flashed upon rebooting.

I'm either too tired or too ignorant to figure out what happened or how to fix it.

Any assistance would be appreciated!

I had an issue with my usb3 devices (HDD/USB disks) being recognized as usb2.0 with a huge transfer penalty.Turns out there's something wrong with the plug (it's either too stiff or the extra 3.0 leads are too short) and by the time it takes to push the plug fully in, the device gets recognized as 2.0 and then stays like that. Now that I know, I try to connect it really fast but I might need to try that a couple of times until it gets connected as a 3.0 (fortunately my most used external drive has a different LED color for USB 2.0/3.0 operation). Another solution when I'm on the desktop is to use a small usb 3.0 cable extension which I plug first on the computer and then plug whatever device on that extension. I never get the 2.0 operation by mistake doing that, so I guess it's the computer's plug to blame.

This issue popped up I'd assume in the past few days, but I only noticed yesterday for the first time. I use a Turtle Beach Ear Force X12 (don't know if that's of any importance, but I figured I'd type in case it does) headset. I noticed, when playing a game, my mic was not working. I later went into Control Panel and into Sound to see what the problem was. Oddly enough, there was nothing listed in Playback or Recording. I still received (and can still receive) sound from the headset. When in game, I'm assuming the only reason it doesn't work is because the Steam (the game hosting client) client doesn't have any headset to detect, as windows does not. I've tested a different headset (of the exact same model) on my computer, exact same issue. I tested my headset on a different computer (again, of the exact same model; my dad and I have similar hardware, an XPS 8700). So the issue is definitely on my computer, and not with the headset.

Again, as I've stated: The headphones work fine, audio goes right through them. Yet it isn't being detected in the Sound tab of control panel. I'd assume the microphone works fine (Outside of Steam, where I mainly use it), though I'm not sure where I'd test this. Any ideas on what I need to do would be greatly appreciated. I'm new to this forum, so sorry if I didn't post any necessary information.

I tried replacing the hard drive on my Inspiron 9300 with a 200G drive.  The administrative computer tools in Windows XP recognized it, but the BIOS showed it as 130G or so.  I finally had to replace the drive with a smaller one.  I had the latest BIOS version.  Is there a BIOS fix that will allow the larger hard drive to be used?

Not on the 9300s that use EIDE (parallel ATA) drives, no - the limit is 137G in BIOS setup.

The issue is my Windows 7 PC that is WIRED connected to my router is not seeing any of my UPNP Device (Media Devices). From now on I will mention my xbox 360 cause it is the one I use most often but its across the board for all my wireless media devices.

When i am trying to media share to my xbox 360 from my windows 7 they are just not seeing each other. I went through everything all services are automatic and started that need to be. No firewall, media sharing is on. Everything says its should be fine, and it used to be. Just one day I try to stream and it stopped working.

I have read that with the Win 7 being wired and other devices being wireless Win 7 pretty much sets them up on different networks.

I tried to ping my xbox's ip address from my Win 7 PC, and I keep getting time out errors. I have pinged my xbox IP Address from the router and it came back fine. The xbox can also connect to the internet. I am pretty sure my Wired Win 7 and my wireless devices are not on the same network.

Also from my pc when I ipconfig /all I just see my pc, if i goto my network on the router they are all there

How can I fix this. I just want my wireless media devices to be able to communicate with my win 7 pc.

Thank you in advance for any help you can give. I have been pulling my hair out for over a month and when I contacted Microsoft, they said sure we can help if you pay $99 first. HELL NO

Answer:Windows 7 - Wired and Wireless Networking Issue - UPNP Devices (Media Devices)

Easy way to check if there on different networks is to check the ip address each machine is getting. If its the same first parts, ie 192.168.1.1 and the xbox is on 192.168.0.1 then yes its separate networks. Somethings wireless routers will push the wireless onto a separate network for security purposes, look through your routers options to see if this is enabled to separate the networks.

So I have an iPod and external hard drive connected by USB.

My Dell only recognizes these devices maybe 50% of the time or so, unless I start with the iPod connected, which will work fine. If I start with the external hard drive connected, it isn't recognized until I reconnect it.

I had USB recognition problems, and Dell sent me a new motherboard for my Inspiron E1705, which I installed myself successfully. Now my computer recognizes my printer consistently, but the hard drive and iPod are iffy.

I disregarded this and tried to add more music to my iPod. At first, it was giving me disc writing errors. Later on, it would either freeze or only add a small portion of the songs.

So I started fiddling around with the order things were connected, and now My Computer freezes when I open it. I restarted my laptop, tried a diagnostic in iTunes (with the iPod attached at startup, which opened iTunes, then closed iTunes so I could turn on my external hard drive where my music is stored, reopened iTunes where music worked by iPod wasn't being recognized by iTunes), and it said I was having iPod connection problems.

I went to the apple site and followed their instructions by closing the iPod Service in the services menu of My Computer management. When checking My Computer to see if Windows recognized the iPod as a disc, My Computer froze yet again, causing my Start toolbar and desktop icons to disappear when trying to end the task.

I'm running on Alt+Tab and Windows... Read more

After upgrading to 8.1 all of my previously listed devices are no longer listed under devices... in fact there are no devices listed. I can also not add a device. If I look in device manager they are listed there and if I go to print the printer shows up and I can print. The screenshot below shows what I see when I open "Devices and Printers" in control panel. The biggest issue is not being able to add devices like Bluetooth speaker. Anyone have an idea how Tom resolve??

Answer:Windows 8.1 upgrade no devices now listed under devices.

You'll need updated chipset drivers from your computer manufacturer.

Goto BIOS, there you have 4 options.

Primary Master
Secondary Master

Primary Slave
Secondary Slave

Set it as follows:

Primary Master -----> Main Boot HDD
Secondary Master -----> EMPTY

Primary Slave -----> CD/DVD RAM
Secondary Slave -----> Secondary backup HDD
Hpe it helps!

Hello,

I have a Windows XP and have recently been having some virus issues. I have used Avira, AVG, Malwarebytes, Spybot, etc., to scan my computer and remove a lot of the corrupted files.

The problem I am having now is that any external device I plug in to my computer (hard-drives, thumb drives, iphone, ipod and memory cards) through any of my usb and card reader slots are not being recognized in "my computer."

The slots do work, in the sense that the external hard-drives light up and the disc spins, I can charge my iphone and ipod through my usb, but my computer does not find them so I cannot access the external hard-drives, memory cards, or sync iphone and ipod. Also, I can hook up these same devices to other computers without any issues.

I have uninstalled and reinstalled all of the usb drivers, tried safe mode, and multiple other things I've read from other forums. I was also getting the "windows no disk exception processing error" that I was unable to resolve by any of the proposed methods such as renaming drives, etc. I ended up downloading a patch to make this error go away, but it just stops the error from popping up, it doesn't actually fix the problem. I am guessing this might be related to my current problem, but it may also be a result of some of the spyware and trojans I have had and what I deleted from my computer to clear up these viruses.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I really want my computer to be able to ... Read more

Hi All!
I am new to this forum and seeking advice with my Vista premium finding no cd/dvd burner. I am running an HP dv4-1225 notebook with an AMD dual core RM-72 chip, 4 GB ram and my O/S is 64 bit. I have uninstalled the IDE controller, and deleted the low and high filters in the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet002\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}.

Still no devices found after restart.

Any other hints on how to restart my cd/dvd drives?......also, I did use them a few weeks prior to losing their function.

BTW...I am not a big fan of Vista and HP's
Thanks ahead!
