Preferred Solution: all icons in Win7 are showing .lnk extensions

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

How does one un-install Adblock if it's not in Chome extensions?
I had Adblock, found that I didn't care for it, as it affected too many sites. I used the 'un-install' feature of Adblock, and I don't see anywhere on my PC, but a few sites that I go to say...'To correctly view this site, disable Adblock'.

I found this website...http://www.securitystronghold.com/gates/adblock.html   that says it will uninstall Adblock, but I don't know this site, and don't want to download unknown software.
Does anyone know how to un-install Adblock? Thanks!!!

I have a 1G flash drive that just recently started showing all information copied to it as 0000.000 I am copying information from my old PC (Win98) to my new laptop (XP).

After the first time (I'd tried to copy a zillion jpegs), when I transfered it to the new machine, all I saw was the string of zeroes. So, I formatted it. (with FAT32). Now it seems that no matter what I am copying (.doc or .jpg), once I put the drive into the new machine, all I get are the zeroes.

Does anyone know why this is happening?

Thanks for any help!

Answer:Flash Drive extensions showing as .000

Go into admin tools under control panel. Then go into disk management.

Find the letter assigned to your flash drive.

format it. (you will lose all files)

It should work again. If you're still getting zeros written, you may have a faulty flash drive or a bad connection. try an alternate USB port.

Dear all,

I have recently installed Windows 8 Enterprise RTM x86 on FSC V3505 laptop and so far the OS has been working for a month. However, Recently I tried to access "Control panel -> Indexing options -> Advanced -> File types" which caused the Indexing options windows to close. Similarly, trying to access "Control panel -> Default Programs - > Associate a file type or protocol with a program" causes windows explorer to crash. The Event Viewer reports are shown below. Both options I am trying to access are supposed to show a list of file extensions. I am trying to figure out what is the reason for this behavior and possible to correct the issue without reinstalling windows from scratch. System restore is not a good option since there are only two restore points corresponding to recent time points.

I hope somebody has experienced the same. looking forward to your replies.
Regards
Solo

Attempting to access

Answer:Windows 8 showing file extensions causes crash

That's a weird one. Combase.dll is used for Com/ActiveX controls. It seems odd that it would crash only on this, since Com is so heavily used in the system.

Do you have any apps installed that install explorer extensions? Like right click extensions? They might be causing the problem. You could try doing a system reset.

My desktop icons all have .lnk extentions, not allowing me to open them. When I use an alternate method to open things, I get a redirect file extension page, which then goes to a Windows file association page, asking me what program i want to use to open the file, or if I want to choose one from a list. This is happening with all my .exe files and is truly disturbing.

Answer:Desktop icons have .lnk extensions, won't open

It's malware. I just ran into it a few days ago for the first time. It can be a bit of an icky one to get rid of. It kills all of the file associations in the current users account

Try booting into safe mode, and logging in to the Administrator account. Then download and run Malwarebytes. Also download and run HitmanPro.

On this board I am not trained as a malware expert. I hope one of them comes along to help. I do much better on cleanups when I am sitting at the keyboard of the infected system.

I have just built a new computer, using Windows 7 Pro 64 bit, however, I've noticed when I open Windows explorer, 3 out of 4 times it will continuously search for drives when opening up explorer and not show any drives that are installed. I've tried reformatting, using different hard drives, but the problem persists no matter what I do. I've reinstalled Windows 7 with only a single drive plugged in, tried different SATA ports, but this problem keeps coming back. The only thing I can think of is that the Windows 7 install disk is corrupted and not installing properly.

I've also noticed that once it starts searching like this, the icons wont display in any folder, although the file names will. Likewise, when trying to sort files by date, type, etc, they will not sort.

When this happens, I can easily type in C:\ to get to the drive without problem to access the drive but above problems with icons not showing, sorting, etc still is a problem.

Has anyone had this problem? Know of a way to fix this? I'm not looking forward to having to reformat again as I don't have the time to sit through and reinstall everything again after.

I've seen multiple posts here and other forums and I have tried all of the steps provided in those posts but it is not resolving my issue. I have the exact same issue as the user in THIS THREAD. I have tried the icon database rebuild (both manually and using the bat file HERE), I have tried ie4uinit.exe - ClearIconCache from command prompt, I have tried Disk Cleanup and checked the box to delete icon cache and I have tried different cache size amounts using the steps HERE. I've tried these all from normal boot and safe mode. I don't know what else to do. The icons that have the problem keep changing every time I restart the PC. I can change them to another icon, rename the icon the shortcut had previously been using and reapply that icon and it shows normal at that time but as soon as I restart the PC, icons change to the smaller size on random shortcuts again. What other steps are there?

Thanks in advance.

Answer:Multiple icons showing in smallest size when using Extra Large Icons

Welcome to the Seven Forums.

Have you tried the batch file in this tutorial:
Folder View Settings - Reset All to Default
It resets the area of the registry that stores some desktop icon info.
warning: read the note about desktoprestore.

You might also want to try combining the batch file for icon cache rebuild with this one... only kill/restart explorer once at the end.

Does this problem happen if you create (& log onto) a new (test) user account?

Hello! So I just signed up here because I'm desperate and don't know what to do.

So basically, I thought the windows 10 default folder icons were pretty bland and ugly so I decided to change them. I read that you could change your default icons by going into to registry and I did just that. Long story short, it didn't work so i deleted the registry folder that I had just created, like they said you could. I was very careful (or so I think) to not touch anything else

But now I'm worried I might have messed up somewhere because now I can't change icons for some of the folders I use. Not sure if this was a problem before that I didn't notice or if it's due to me messing around with things I don't understand.

As things are now, I can change icons for folders that I created but the folders that came with the system (like documents, music, movies, downloads etc) I'm currently unable to change. The thing is, I was able to change the folder icons just a while ago, so I changed them all by right clicking on the folder, choosing properties and then changing the icon, and that worked fine. Then I decided to just use the default icons anyway but I was only able to switch back some of them, and some of those now had the wrong folder icon. My "downloads" folder is just a blank white space for example and I'm unable to change it.

Answer:Unable to change folder icons + folders showing the wrong icons

Hi, whenever you are about to make changes to your registry, back up beforehand. So you now know that and I'll show you an excellent way to rescue yourself in future.

First, do you have System Restore turned on (it's off by default in '10), and do you have any useful restore points?
Second, have you made a system image using Windows Backup and Restore or do you use disk imaging?

Either of those could let you restore your PC to a point before you made these changes- hopefully System Restore would protect enough to reverse your changes.

Please advise.

If you can't do that, and you are convinced there is a problem, then you may have two options, assuming you've not done some damage to the registry.

1. If you create a new user account for test purposes, do your folders look normal?

2. If not, I suggest you do an in-place upgrade repair install.
I will provide the instructions if necessary when you have replied.

Please post back and advise on these points.

I can also tell you how to achieve this quite easily and relatively safely:
Now here's the backup method we strongly recommend:
Creating disk images lets you restore Windows and all your disks and partitions to a previous working state, quickly and probably without technical help.

You can recover from:
- a failed disk drive (restore to a new one)
- ransomware (which encrypts your disk)
- user error
- unrecoverable problems from failed updates to problem programs
- unbootable PC (hardware faults aside)

Hello, so I have tried to change the Adobe reader's file extension - .pdf and its icon to a custom one, but there is no 'folder options' tab in win7 to do that. I followed the tutorial here File Extension Icon - Change Default Icon and also tried using the program Filestypeman to change the icon but both had no effect even with the correct path.
I have managed to locate what I believe are the icons for these darn .pdf files at:
C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Reader 10.0\Reader\AcroRd32dll (and inside icongroup>2)

Any suggestions?

Answer:How do I change the the .pdf file extensions icon? win7

Changing the extension (portable document format; pdf) will not do anything but corrupt the file. the file will not be converted to anything else by changing the extension.

Also changing the icon for pdf (adobe reader/acrobat) is not impossible but toughmost. You are to enter into C:\Windows\installer. There you have to search foe Adobe's folder (the folders are arranged there not by name but by long numbers). The icons are stored as .exe files there (a feature of MSI based installers). You have to edit the .exe and change the icon using a program like resource hacker.

There may be other easier ways, but I dont know. If somebody can suggest, that will be nice

I have a .BAT (batch) file for restoring all default file extensions and their associations for WinXP, but I haven't been able to find one for Vista and/or Win7. I did find a site that has all the individual .REG fixes for each file extension/association, but having to do that one-by-one would be VERY uncool and time consuming... any links or info will be appreciated!!!

THX!

(BTW - the site with all the individual REG fixes for Win7 ONLY can be found here: http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/19449-default-file-type-associations-restore.html)

Answer:Restoring default Win7 file extensions

Well, there is a way, download them all, then you could use a dos (for) statement to run them all. I can't give a script now, but if I remember for tomorrow, I could do something. Also, you can combine them all in one .reg file. Then run it once. Kinda curious about the .bat file ye have. Mind PM it to me? Or link it here?

Hi,

I was trying 2 days in a row to add some icons in the right click context menu. I was able to add some of them, for example next to "print" or "play". But I ouldn't find any way to add icons next to shell extensions, for example "7-zip". Is this any way via registry or via any other program to manage this ? I think that this is possible with Visual Studio, but I don't know much about it (but if it's possible a tutorial is appreciated). I have some experience with editing dlls via Resource Hacker e.t.c. Any help ?

P.S. : I have some screenshots attached, explaining what I want to do...

Hi everyone,

I'm having another complete nightmare problem on my brand new Dell XPS running Win x64 Ultimate.

When I try to customise what behaviour the various icons exhibit on the taskbar (and I'm taken to CONTROL PANEL- ALL CONTROL PANEL ITEMS-NOTIFICATION AREA ICONS), some of the icons are correct and truly represent the proramme which they are aligned with, but some are incorrect and some are blank and some are duplicates of icons for other programmes that are shown elsewhere.

I've tried everything I can think of, but nothing works.

Can anyone help, please?

While working on some Microsoft Word Documents, with MS Word Starter (free version), all file icons and extensions everywhere in the computer changed.

Icons in some Word documents with .docx extensions changed to a plain orange (attachment 1), while retaining the same extension. When double clicked to open, a microsoft window appears asking me to activate the full Microsoft Office 2010 (paid version), which is in Widows 7 by default. These documents are not opening.

The rest of the Word documents changed their extensions from .docx to .rtf (attachment 2). Their icons also changed from the usual Word document icon. These open with Word Satarter but in Compatibility Mode, which did not happen before.

The option to 'Open with' in the right click menu does not show Word Starter in the pop up window (Attachment 3). Not even when 'Other programs' are selected.

I did a repair to the Word Starter from the Control Panel, to no avail. I have a few hundred Word documents in my libraries which are now in a total mess!

What can I do?

Answer:Microsoft Word Documents icons and file extensions changed

You could try rebuilding the Icon cache by following this tutorial.

I try to click on the place the icon is supposed to be and it says file not found may have been move would you like to delete. I try to access my computer and it says location not found. It doesn't just happen after games, a few times i went to windows update to check for updates and when I finished the same thing occurs. I have been talking to Microsoft support but they have no ideas. I was wondering if any of you had any ideas. Some people I have talked to said it sounds like Windows resource management problems, but i have installed windows fresh twice now in the last 3 weeks and nothing has helped. Could this be a hard drive issue?

I'm using filetypeman, attempting to set a different icon for a different type of text file such as xml, csv, txt, ini, php ... But when I change one of them, some or all of them will be affected. I have associated them with a common text editor, that may be the cause. But is there a way to tweak their icons to prevent them from changing together? My OS is Win 7 x64. Question: Icons not showing

The other day I turned on my computer and the icons for some folders and files weren't showing up. I attached a picture of what it looks like. I don't think I did anything myself that would cause this. I just ran spybot and it didn't help, so I'm posting this while I try some other programs.

Any help is appreciated

Answer:Icons not showing

It just looks like it lost the path to the folder icon. Right click Properties and there should be an option under there to change icons. Just go back to the System32 folder under Windows i believe and you should find them again.

Hi,

I experienced a weird problem while working on my daughter's Windows 7 laptop last night.

The little area in the bottom right-hand of the screen (forget what it's called) normally shows little icons of the main programs that are loaded and running in the background. This had been set to always show the icons for our antivirus and antispyware programs, even if they did not have active notifications to display.

Well, those icons were showing just fine beforehand, but then started acting up after I'd uninstalled the free versions of Adaware and Spybot, plus then installed the free version of SpywareBlaster and a paid copy of the antispyware add-on extensions for McAfee Enterprise VirusScan 8.7i.

I kept trying to change the icon preferences for the McAfee icon to always show up no matter what, but every time I rebotted the computer, it would go back to being a hidden icon. Changing the preferences to having ALL icons show up all the time does work, but that is a bit of an overkill.

Does anyone have a suggestion as to how I could fix this minor icon display problem?

Thanks.

Answer:How to Keep Icons Showing?

it might be a setting in the program that overrides the windows command to always show, i would check the settings in that one program that you want to show.

I'm running Vista on a new Vaio laptop.

On XP I could right-click a webpage and create a shortcut on the desktop. It would show that site's icon (like the orange 'Z' for jigzone) on the desktop.

For Vista the "unrecognized" icon shows. The title of the webpage shows correctly, and when I ask for a description of the link on the desktop the proper icon (the orange 'Z' for jigzone) shows.

Since I can create the shortcut with the proper icon on my HP running Vista it must be something different on my laptop but I can't find what it is.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Hello genhartg,

This may be an association issue. If you like, download and merge the .reg files for the listed EXE and lnk (LNK) options in the tutorial below. They will restore the default associations for these file types, and hopefully fix this for you.

Default File Type Associations - Restore

Hope this helps,

Question: Icons not showing

Hi - I have just had a new hard drive put in, and busily customising everything.

I notice that the Microsoft Office Tools are not showing the correct icons - e.g. W for Word etc. they are just a white square with blue top, which could suggest they wouldn't open, but they do. Several other applications are like that namely Adobe, Windows Media, Microsoft Power Point.

Is something missing - have I deleted something - or turned something off ??

Regards
Judy

Can anyone tell me why when i view any of my icons in my icon folder, they all show up as a bitmap. I tried to open the property of them, but does not indicate the program that would allow me to see them. They are showing up as a small bmp inside a document. (somewhat like notepad)

Can anyone help with this?

Answer:Icons not showing up as icons

Hello and welcome to TSF

Please try this:

Download TweakUI (click on the colored link), the download is on the right side of the page. Save it to your desktop.

When the download is finished, double click on it, this should install it. When installed, Click Start, All Programs, Powertoys for Windows XP, click Tweak UI.

When Tweak UI is loaded click on Repair then on Rebuild Icons and click Repair, then Apply and Ok.

I seem to have lost the icons for my mp3 and wav files (who knows if there are more). I have them associated with windows media player. When I change the file association, the icon changes to the correct icon, but when I change it back to WMP, it goes away.

BTW, my system did not have iconcache.db in the appdata\local folder (viewing hidden files, system files), so I don't know what is up. Again, it's only for audio files associated with WMP. If I change the file association to another program, the icons for mp3/wav files appear. Change it back, they're gone.

Any ideas? Thanks.

Answer:.MP3/.WAV icons showing up as blank for WMP?

WMP only has codecs for windows media files (wmv,wma,etc.). MP3 is a mpeg codec and as such you will need to download and install a codecs package like K-lite codecs: http://www.codecguide.com/download_kl.htm.

Hello,

First, thanks to all for all the previous help; appreciate it very much.

Re the bar on the bottom, which I guess is called the Taskbar:

Have several icons on it, which is fine.

But it won't accept any more new ones if I try to drag some onto it.

I right clicked on the bar and pulled up the Taskbar Tab under properties.
I have the Lock The Taskbar box un-checked, and have also selected
Never Combine next to the Taskbar Buttons: line.

Seems like it's still trying to pin the icons to others, and Not show them visually as completely separate icons in the bar.

What might I be doing wrong ?

BTW: also, any way of having the icon names Permanently displayed next to the icon on top or below the particular icon ?

Thanks,
Bob

Thanks,
Bob

After changing my keyboard settings, something happened with my taskbar so that it only shows two pinned icons, and I have to use these up and down arrow keys to scroll through the rest. This is incredibly annoying, as I can't figure out how to make it show all the icons again. My ThinkCentre button is hogging up the whole task bar, and any right clicks in the giant empty spaces right next to it will bring up options for the ThinkCentre.

Answer:taskbar showing just two icons; help!

Hello Yihwan,

It looks like you need to unlock your taskbar, drag the dotted lines separator just to the left of the blue circle icon (far right one) over to the left to decompress the other icons until the arrows to the right of the Chrome icon go away. After you get the icons dragged into the position you want, you can lock the taskbar again.

Hope this helps,
Shawn

I have a problem with any saved htm/html pages on my computer, the icon shows as the default application icon (see attached file), any shortcuts show fine, with the E logo, and the IE icons on the quicklaunch/desktop/start menu all work fine. If I go into file types and change the icon, the screen refreshes, flicks to the generic windows icon then resets to the application icon again, the only way i've managed to show the E logo was to delete the listings for HTM and HTML files and create them again manually, but this causes problems with some programs, saying there is no registered browser. I've previousl had a problem where all my desktop icons had the E logo over the top of the correct icon, that was fixed a while ago, but I don't know if they are related problems, I've only just noticed the incorrect icons (I don't know if they screwed up when I fixed the other problem) and now I've noticed it, it's bugging me!

I'm sorry for posting so many questions here. But my Windows XP operating sytem isn't displaying icons when I download new items. Instead I have to right click > properties > change icon > OK. Instead of automatically installing the icon, it shows this:

on the desktop. It displayed a similar image for virtually everything in the start menu too. This meant I had to install every single icon in the start bar menu manually! What is causing this? How can I fix it so it automatically displays icons for newly installed items?

Hey,
When I turned on my computer this morning, I noticed the Icons were looking rather mucked up.

As you can (hopefully) see, most of the icons show in roughly quarters that have been re-arranged with parts of other icons.

I'm running Windows XP, SP2, recently reformatted (about 1mth) after extensive wireless network issues (which still exist, hence me posting on the other computer). I have AVG, and ZoneAlarm installed and I update as often as I have internet. However, I often turn them off for long periods of time as they seem to enjoy crashing my numerous games.

Due to exams etc. my computer has been turned off (at the wall, no possibility of nosy parents / siblings) in the shed (long story). I turned it on today for the first time in a week to find the error. Having run a full computer scan with AVG (assumedly just over 1 week out of date) I found nothing other than tracking cookies.

I have re-started several times, and tried changing the theme back to 98 instead of XP.

If there is another thread on this problem, than feel free to redirect me - as I have to leave for work soon and have had no more than a quick glance at similar threads.
(wasn't sure if this was a virus or general MS fault, so I posted it here)
Thanks in advance,
Sam

Answer:Icons showing in mosaic, XP

Hi, welcome to TSF

From http://www.windowsnetworking.com/kba...IconCache.html

Quote:

There is a hidden icon cache file in your windows directory, ShellIconCache, which contains a copy of all the default desktop icons. It sometimes gets corrupted. If it does, your icons will go all black or they may display the wrong icons. If this happens, delete it and reboot. NT (& Win9x) will repopulate the cache with the default icons. To delete the ShellIconCache:

* at a command prompt, change to the %SystemRoot% folder
* remove the hidden attribute from the file:
type attrib -h shelliconcache and press ENTER.
* delete the file:
type del shelliconcache and press ENTER.
* logoff and backon and the default icons should be restored.

We are having an issue with nearly half (we have a few hundred at out company) of our T60?s and T61?s where they do not show the desktop icons at boot up.  If they start the task manager and run explorer then everything pops up like normal.  But they will have to repeat this process every time they boot up.  We also tried having them turn off the wireless radio via the slider switch but that did not help. One fix we found was to go C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Local Settings\Application Data  and copy the IconCache.db found there over the users IconCache.  This fixes the issue for 99% of the people who have this problem, but there are a few that continue to boot up to no desktop items. The only other fix we have found was to put explorer.exe in the start up folder.  This brings up a pop up of their My Documents at start up that they have to close but is much easier than going through the task manager to run explorer. We also have many T43?s and many Lenovo desktops from M-81, M-82, and M-88?s.  none of the desktops show this problem and we have not had this issue with any of the 43?s.The software packages are essentially the same for all of our systems.  The only difference being is that the desktops do not have VPN.Windows XP sp2MS Office 2003 standardIE 6Adobe Reader 8.1Lotus Notes 8.1Sametime 8.0Cisco VPN 4.6RealVNC 4Symantec Antivirus 10.1.5 We run all MS updates and keep the laptops fully patched with Lenovo ... Hi - I hope someone can help

since some 1-2 months my taskbar acts a bit strangely when booting up. first i thought it was due to the installation of catalyst 9.12, but after uninstalling it (also cleaning using DH driver cleaner) and booting and reinstalling it, and also after a clean installation of 9.13 the problem persists.

when i boot up, first my desktop with all the icons and the start- & taskbar (language icon & clock) appear normally, then the complete taskbar (including start button etc.) disappear, and after some 30sec-1min reappear again and then my av icon, LAN & WLAN icons appear.

BUT some other icons that actually also should be active (like ATI, volume etc.) dont appear. i have to restart runtime for ati to make the ati icon appear and go to control panel>sounds & audio devices and uncheck place volume icon in the taskbar > apply, then check it again > apply, and then it appears in the taskbar.

all icons are set to hide when inactive in the taskbar options, but setting the ones that should appear to always show also doesnt make them appear after start-up.

any ideas what i should do?

Hello all,

I've run into a problem on my laptop where icons are not showing up on the desktop. If I go to Personalization and add icons for My Computer, Recycle Bin, or whatever, they don't show up. Copy-pasting a file to the desktop, it doesn't show up. However, I can see all the stuff I've copy-pasted by going to the Desktop folder in my User folder: everything is there. It just doesn't show up visually on the desktop itself.

This problem occurred soon after I cleaned up my desktop of all icons, including deactivating the My Computer and Recycle Bin icons. I'm not sure if doing that is related to this.

Any ideas? Thank you.

This is really really really bugging me, if you click on start then you click of your name or whatever to access your photos and videos and such, well you open that up, and you can see the little scroll down thing on the right, well most of the icons are not being shown. The are just displaying a black box where the icons are "supposed" to be. This only happens in my account on the computer, not the administaters. What is going on? Does anyone else have this problem? And how can I fix this?

Answer:Icons Not Showing Up In My Computer And Such

The most obvious thing that could cause this (although there are many other reasons) is that your user account has become corrupted. Try creating a new account and seeing if it has the same behavior. If not, switch your stuff over to the new account and delete the old one.

Alright, for some reason my desktop icons are " hidden".
when I right click the start button and click "explore" I can still see all my icons and everything that would normally be on the desktop. My desktop itself is blank. I have searched and searched but I can not find a solution.
I might have hit something on my keyboard, I know my hand hit my keyboard and then I looked at the monitor and I had no icons, I ran virus scan, restarted, searched on google. I'm just having trouble.

I can still use everything just fine also.. it just wont show my icons.

When I'm composing new message in Gmail icons for links, text formating etc.. are not showing up.
Here's what it looks like:

I log by going to https://mail.google.comm and I have always use HTTPS checked.

It's intermittent. I've tried different themes and browsers but issue still persists.
It's not all the time but it driving me nuts.

I have other issues with Gmail like stuck in loading... sending... for decades, icons disappearing is the major one for me. I just wish there was some better web alternative for Gmail. I am getting pretty tire of it.

Any help is appreciated

Thanks in advance

After changing my keyboard settings, something happened with my taskbar so that it only shows two pinned icons, and I have to use these up and down arrow keys to scroll through the rest. This is incredibly annoying, as I can't figure out how to make it show all the icons again. My ThinkCentre button is hogging up the whole task bar, and any right clicks in the giant empty spaces right next to it will bring up options for the ThinkCentre.

See image: http://img27.imageshack.us/img27/1720/problemka.png

Help is appreciated!

Answer:taskbar showing just two icons; help!

Right click the left-very down corner (where it is the taskbar again under the start button) and uncheck 'Lock taskbar'.
Now u should be able to reduce the size of that toolbar.
If you can't right click again > toolbars then uncheck the specific toolbars.

Hi,

Is there a reason why some icons would not show up on the taskbar on the PC.
Example: Audio, Bluetooth, Intel Wireless, etc?

For example the audio one is configured to place the icon there, it has the check mark and does not show up.

Thx

Hello everyone, I've recently noticed that on my bottom right taskbar section, where my time and volume are located that almost all applications that normally there would be missing if minimized (such as windows live messenger, gamebooster, etc.)

What could be the issue? I can hover my mouse over where applications might be at, and I can still see the program, but with arrows in it's place. Hopefully you can look through my screenshot and see what I mean.

I'm having problems changing the Metro tile icons for the "old school" apps.

When I change the icon, it is blank... showing only the default white square icon. Do the icons for Win 8 have to be in a certain format? If so, can anyone give me the specifics?

Thanks!

*edit* It would be great if they let you use .png's... but no such luck.

Answer:Custom Icons Not Showing

I have the same problem I've tried different sizes, with or without transparency with no luck. Strangely the icons that I have made previously in window 7 work when applied to a shortcut in windows 8 very strange.

Hi, ive attached a picture of my problem.

I have a few theme programs installed such as vista transfromation pack and windowsblinds which could have messed with the icon cache which could have caused this problem. Basically all the default icons have been replcaed by vista looking ones and this is the only bug, the my computer, my documents and my network places icons wont show up on the side when i choose "save file as" or something

i have also removed my computer my documents and my network places from my desktop with tweakUI

any ideas for a wrokaround

thanks

Answer:Icons not showing in side

Using more than one GUI changing program is bad, many times they will conflict, and something like this is the result. My advice, based on personal experiance is too unload WindowBlinds, and do a complete uninstall. Then uninstall the transformation pack as well, once you get your GUI back to a default setting, install only one of this type of programs.

Use disk management in 7 to assign it a drive letter. If that fails, post a screenshot for advice.

It's possible the rest of your RAM is being used by your graphics card.

Before Win7, the PC would show up as a network connection on my Mac, now it doesn't, which makes syncing my iTunes annoying - all the music is store on the PC.

How can I get Win7 to allow the PC to show up on the Mac...Mac settings haven't changed, PC's have, so I assume that's the machine at error.

Mac shows up fine on the Windows machine.

Mac OSX, current update.

Answer:Win7 PC stopped showing up on Mac

You have to set up your Win7 machine to share via a Workgroup like it has in the past, not a Homegroup.

Hi, I hope someone out there can help. I am using xp with sp2. My pc seems to take ages starting up, from the splash screen until the welcome screen can take up to 4 minutes and during that time there is no harddrive activity at all, sometimes when it eventually gets to the desktop there are no icons or taskbar. I then have to ctrl, alt, del, it to get it to restart that way and everything seems to be fine on starting for the second time. I,ve ran Spybot, Adaware, and done a deep virus scan and found nothing at all. It seems Explorer.exe seems to be the cause of the problem not loading properly on startup. Has anyone got any ideas whats causing this.

Answer:No icons or taskbar showing on desktop.

have you considered the problems may be unrelated check out task bar options and hide taskbar also position your mouse at the bottom of the screen untill it becomes a double headed arrow and try to drag task bar back in viewwestfield driver

Hi All,

My system has been behaving erratically these past few days. I have just installed critical updates for windows vista basic 32bit and at restart, some of my quick launch bars icons were showing blanks. I have tried several system restores without much joy there. Trojan and virus scans have also drawn a blank. Can someone help, before I resort to a total system reinstall?

Answer:Quick Launch Bar icons not showing

Right click on the taskbar , click on Toolbars and click on New Toolbar:
Now type: %appdata%\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch and press Enter.
Your quick launch should come up.

Hi, first of all I want to say hello to all at bleepingcomputer, since this is my first post. Now to the reason of it: I need some help.A few days ago I installed some application that caused my desktop to show no icons. I removed the app immediately, rebooted, and all icons on the Desktop (except for folders) were replaced by the "unknown file type" icon. I've tried a few things and managed to get back some icons through the "change icon" button in Properties, but some icons I could not change or just won't. The icons that still won't work are: Recycle Bin, Internet Explorer, Default Web Browser (I'm using Firefox), and Sony Ericsson File Manager. These are the things I've done so far:- Did a System Restore to two different previous points.- Changed icons through Properties in the respective programs.- Downloaded registry restorations from http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm- Ran antivirus (avast!), ad-aware and SpyBot. Nothing was found.None of these have worked for me. The icon files are still obviously in the computer, since they appear all right in my mom's and sister's accounts. And I was gonna live with it but when I turned on the PC today, a blue screen with the windows logo that said "please wait" appeared before the welcome screen, so I'm starting to worry. Do any of you know what the hell's going on with my pc?

Answer:Desktop Icons Not Showing Up Properly.

If you can get to 'safe mode' I would scan with all the anti-spyware tools, like Ewido, A-squared, Spybot s & d, etc. If that doesn't work try and see if any of the windows updates have upset your syssem. I lost my search facility with a windows update.
