Preferred Solution: how do i get my desktop icons back

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Currently running Vista 64bit SP2. When running other Windows such as XP & 7, I copy back my desktop icons and folders (excluding system folders & icons) to the new desktop when I've reformatted. My HDD is partioned as C & D, D being where I keep files and programs to copy back or run again. I create a new folder called Desktop "Something or Another" and I don't copy the Desktop Folder currently running, only its contents. Whilst I can open my Desktop Folder using Windows 7 64bit, when I try to do the same in Vista, it just won't open and reverts back to the desktop I'm currently using, albeit losing a lot a stuff on the desktop before it's fine again. Trying to open the folder in Safe Mode or with the anti-virus/firewall turned off makes no difference. How can I fix this please?

Answer:Desktop icons folder won't open & copy back to the desktop

Found the error of my ways. There is only one God, see http://news.cnet.com/8301-13860_3-10423985-56.html for Godmode. Tried to copy this and it knocked me out of 64bit Vista whereas it would have been alright with 32bit.

Assuming you mean the whole task bar which is normally at the bottom of the screen - right-click on the taskbar, hold the mouse button down and drag the whole lot back down to the bottom. Then right-click and make sure Lock Taskbar is ticked.

My desktop icons and start folder and progrmas folder icons have (about 90% of them) all been changed ot the default windows icon.

I cannot change it back using properties, even though the original icon is being showed in the properties pane.

Any idea on how to fix this??? This all coincided with a faulty McAfee update I got yesterday (I was _ this _ close to reformatting until I discovered what the problem was) I unistalled it as I was not able to do a system restore (all my restore points were no good)

Any ideas on how to get them back??? The desktop icons are fine if I am using desktopX, but only for the desktop not the start/programs folders.

TIA

Morning Chaps, something is happening that I don't know how to remedy. Very often throughout the day, when I oh, say, click for a program to load or even close an open window, all the desktop icons disappear then reload within about 2-3 seconds! It's sending me nuts. Anyone else had this? Did you fix it? Know WHY it happens? I'd love to know...AngeTheHippyxx

Answer:Desktop Icons disappear for 3 secs then back again

I get the same problem at times, usually when starting up in the morning. I thought that perhaps it was because Windows hadn't finished loading in all its various bits, but it still happens occasionally when I give it plenty of time to sort itself out.

Hi there, I've been given a Dell Dimension 5150 with Windows XP Home Edition to try and fix. Originally it was simply a blue screen error saying "Stop:c0000135 - user32.dll not found", so I replaced that with a copy from a Windows XP CD. Once the computer booted to the desktop, I noticed three porn site shortcuts including porn icons.First of all I installed Malwarebytes and updated it, and then ran a scan in both normal and safe modes. It detected a lot of infections. When I tried removing these, I was told that "Registry Editing has been disabled by your system administrator". I solved this by downloading Doug Knox's regtools.vbs script. I then re-ran the Malwarebytes scans and this time it seemed to be able to remove all the infections. After restarting the computer, the icons were gone. However, a few minutes later they suddenly reappeared! I started to get worried at this point.Using a combination of msconfig, HijackThis, AutoRuns and ProcessExplorer, I disabled all the suspicious-looking services and startup entries I could find. There was a lot of AtXX.job entries in the Scheduled Tasks window which I removed. However the icons still kept coming back.Last night I downloaded ComboFix (I know it says at the top "ComboFix is a tool that should only be run under the supervision of someone who has been trained in its use" but this was before I looked at this section of the site), and tried following the instructions on this site. -I have small icons setting

-Auto align icons has been deactivated

-allow themes to change icons has also been deactivated

I tried the right click on the desktop, view, and unchecked Align Icons to Grid. So far, after a sleep and a restart, icons remain where I left them.

When I booted up my computer this morning the desktop wallpaper had reverted back to factory default, plus all the settings. Some of the icons on the desktop were missing as well. When I opened IE8 all its settings were back to default like it had only just been installed. And I could not connect to the internet. I also could not find my documents, so decided to turn on 'Show Hidden Files and Folders'. Thankfully the folder showed up in documents and settings. I did a system restore from the 6th July and this seemed to fix the problem with my desktop back to normal. Could this be hardware related?

I was afraid of going through the clean up process as I have to disable the CD emulation drivers using DeFogger, as you then need to re-boot your PC. Should I back up all my files, then do the malware removal process and report back? Thanks in advance.

When i tried to revert back to the original windows 7 icons it seems that this theme (which is third party I should mention has changed their icons to the default ones) has made the their icons the default. I was wondering if their is a way to get the original windows 7 icons back.

I am using Windows 10 so perhaps this is misdirected.  I will describe my problem because it seems to be the same with Windows 7 comments.
I have a Dell laptop Inspiron 15, 7000 series.  I have 2 additional monitors and I have docking stations at my primary office and my satellite office.  When I shut down to travel and then hook back up at either location, the desktop icons get re-arranged
in random order.  I do not change resolution manually but what I think happens is that any updates MS sends out and I have the computer process those updates, this changes the desktop icons.  That happens on occasion and I wonder if that is changing
my monitor size/display changes (from factory defaults).  Also, the re-arrangement of icons happens when I go from one office to another; no other changes done.  I would really like to make sure the icons stay in the location/placement that I locked
in on the laptop.

Im a first time poster and I hope I have selected the correct category in this forum.

I have Windows 7 Home Premium, pre-installed on a new laptop ive purchased in the last month. I had it set to automatically download and apply all updates.

Within the last couple of weeks, at some point suddenly my desktop icons stopped appearing and I noticed there are no system tray icons, ie volume, network, Power.

Ive searched these forums and found instructions on how to access the "Turn System Icons On Or Off" and the only option I can change is for 'Clock'. The remaining options Volume, Network, Power, Action Center are all greyed out.

I cant understand why I dont have 'permission' to do this and I wonder if it is connected to me not seeing anything on my desktop in so far as icons.

Also, I noticed I cannot 'right-click' my desktop space, which normally would have allowed me to access display options.

In searching these forums I found some references to Administrator permissions, but my User management area says I am an administrator.

Does anyone have any feedback for something I can check/fix?

Steve

This isn't a serious problem, but it is annoying since it has never happened before and I'm used to having a Win XP custom desktop.

Anyway, I can't think of anything new that I've done to my computer as of late except install Spybot and other spyware detecting programs (Hijack This!, etc.) but now, whenever I restart or turn off my computer, my custom icons revert to default windows icons.

By this I mean:

My Computer
My Documents
My Network Places
Recycle Bin (full)
Recycle Bin (empty)

I can normally customize these by clicking right clicking on the desktop > Properties > Desktop > Customize Desktop > Change Icon

But, just as of this week, they have begun to revert back to the boring default windows icons.

I'm sure this is a simple problem but I can't for the love of God figure out how to fix it.

Any suggestions would be incredibly appreciated.

My problem is simply this, when i boot my pc into windows the boot takes maybe 3 seconds to desktop, but the icons on the desktop do not appear for another 10 seconds. The same can be said for the icons in the start menu. The biggest problem is that even if i run the icon such as firefox, before the icon has fully loaded, the program will not run. No programs will run until 13 seconds after boot once the icons have loaded.

Answer:Desktop Icons and Start Icons Delay at Startup

Hi conrad,

Have a SSD or a HDD, if a hard disk run a defrag. or when was last time you did.

Use disk cleanup or download CCleaner which is good CCleaner - PC Optimization and Cleaning - Free Download

Check Anti-Virus settings, how it loads during boot or not, AV take time to load.
Run a full system scan.

Check startup items from task manager, in startup tab if use CCLEANER there is one on it too. I would rather use task manager.

Run error checking, can run it in properties of the drive or run a full chkdsk which is better.
Exactly as typed.
From the elevated command prompt, type chkdsk c: /f /r
then again at elevated command prompt run: sfc /scannow

How can I get these things back? Everything was working fine yesterday when I logged off and it didn't appeared to have an update.

Answer:Solved: Desktop Icons and Start icons changed

If you're still having trouble after installing iTunes again, download THIS.

Save the .reg file to your desktop. Double-click it to merge it to the registry.

Restart the computer.

If the fix only opens as a text file (in Notepad), right-click the file (before opening it) and select Open With > Choose Program... Then, select the Registry Editor.

If the Registry Editor is not in the list, browse to C:\WINDOWS and select regedit.

Hi,
My computer's desktop is blank (black) with no desktop icons.

My task bar icons are missing.
My windows button doesn't open.
I can not access settings (even using CTRL R -> ms-settings: OR right-clicking task-bar. It "times out").
There is "no wireless interface on the system".
My computer constantly gets BSOD (every error possible - i can't remember the error codes. Frequent ones that appear are WatchDogViolation and Memory Management).

I haven't been bothered to fix this problem until recently and was quite happy navigating using CTRL+R but now I'm annoyed. I have tried/watched multiple solutions however, there's always something missing in order to fix the problem, such as opening settings (which i can't do as seen above) or when i feel like i'm almost there, BSOD appears.

This is my last resort before "calling a guy" to help.

If anyone could help that would be great

Thanks,

Hi guys!

I think my Icons got bugged or something. This happened after my friend asked me to move some music and movies from my computer to his hard drive. After I did that, i turned off my laptop and went back to my room and turned it on. What happened next worried me since I wasn't able to move my mouse, the Icons have an Icon that is a square white on top of each. It's an icon on top of one. I turned off my laptop how many times and still does it so i restore it on an earlier date. After i did that, My mouse started working yet my computer became so slow and the Icons are still the same. (white square on top of an old Icon and the icons when you click start are just white squares). I'm getting frustrated already since I'm nowhere near Bestbuy since I am deployed here in Afghanistan. Should I just send this laptop back home since I paid for the insurance anyway or is this fixable while i'm here? Please help. thanks a lot in advance!

My wife was looking at a website and clicking on random links. Apparently she downloaded the wrong think to our laptop. We are getting the following message which, after researching, appears to be the Smart HDD virus.

"A write command during the test has failed to complete. This may be due to a media or read/write error. The system generates an exception error when using a reference to an invalid system memory address."

I have attached the necessary logs. Please help.

You neglected to run TDSSKiller. Please do so.

In the meantime:
Double-click RogueKiller.exe to run. (Vista/7 right-click and select Run as Administrator)
When it opens, press the Scan button
Now click the Registry tab and locate these detections:

Win 10 Pro x64 1607, Classic Start desktop, setting=single-click open, system drive is fast SSD

As detailed in another thread, I've had problems going from 1511 to 1607, but have settled in with the latter for the past week. To try to sort a couple of problems, I ran a in-place repair install last night. Since then, opening desktop icons has become a big problem:

- programs icons are either very slow to open on a single click - 30 secs to minutes - or do not respond at all to the first click, but require a second one to open (not a double click). Some are not responding at all and I've been doing reinstalls to see if that's the problem.

- icons are often opening another one entirely, typically the last one closed; e.g., I just opened an Excel file linked on the desktop, then closed it and then clicked on the link to open this browser. It reopened the Excel file and the browser. In other cases, it just opens the last one alone. In the cases of Fences, double clicking on the desktop opened the last program used (and closed). This type of thing has happened numerous times.

- it appears that after the first opening, the icon or related icons in the case of a file manger (XYplorer) with a number of icons on the desktop, starts responding normally. Perhaps there's a clue in that?

- this does not affect taskbar icons or programs opened from within file managers

Since this started, I've run sfc /scannow, Windows 10 Manager and Tweaking.com's Windows Repair, the latter suggest... Read more

Hi please compare with behaviour

If no change, then, still in a clean boot state, download & run shellexview (free).
Hide all MS items, disable all others, also noting the 32 bit option exposes more.

Can you confirm start menu shortcuts respond ok?

If you have any other instance of file explorer open displaying shortcuts (e.g. rt click All programs in your CS start menu, click Open) do those shortcuts respond normally?

I have successfully installed Windows 10 ("final') on three devices: One venerable notebook, one "media" desktop computer (in my living room) and my main desktop computer in my home office.

Unfortunately, I have encountered a strange phenomenon on my main work computer. I have set the taskbar icons to "large" and they are a "bearable" size. However, the desktop icons (which I don't display on the desktop) in the taskbar are TINY (!) ? and I can't find any way to make them larger.

What make this strange is that there is NO disparity between the size of the App and desktop icons on the desktops of the other two machines. Am I missing a setting, or is this a "glitch"? Is there a workaround? It is really NOT acceptable ? a "step backward" form Windows 7, in my opinion.

Answer:Sizing disparity between App icons and desktop icons in taskbar

Hello Hammerz Welcome to the Ten Forums!

You aren't the first to be complaining about the size of items pinned to the task bar. Efforts to adjust the dpi on those separately only seem to lower the desktop resolution as well. When 10 first went on here I had to change the screen res back from 1600x1024 or 1600x1152 to the native and supported 1440x900 for the pair of 19" lcds in use here. The task bar however remained at the 1600x ? res while the rest saw the 1440x900 take effect.

I tried unlocking the task bar as has been done previously with 7 to grow the size by widening out the task bar and it wouldn't budge a bit as another idea. That only revealed the shortcuts seen in the Quick Launch type additional tool bars added onto the main task bar as jump lists but didn't grow the icons any!

If you should find a solution for this I think a good number of people would love to hear about it just being one of the few annoyances the new version is bringing in with it. Too much emphasis on Tablet and a bit lacking now for the desktop is what the main problems seem to be.

I have a laptop with a 4k 17.3" display. When set to native resolution, 3840x2160, some programs do not display their dialog boxes and menus in usable form. In an attempt to correct this I have tried setting the display resolution to 1920x1080. Then setting the magnification to 100%. At 4k resolution it is set to 250%. When I change the resolution down the dialogs and menus become usable, however all the desktop icons disappear and the icons pinned to the taskbar all change to the same graphic, I can't tell what it is. If I change the resolution back to 4k the icons become normal again. Any ideas?

Either the "exe" fix on here or the "lnk" fix should do the trick. I would start with the "exe" fix:http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorial...If you can't access the internet then download the reg files on another computer and Save them onto a flash drive. strange problem. it happens for all my icons, but I'll use dilbert.com as an example.

I have dilbert.com on my links bar in internet explorer, and a shortcut on my desktop. In the past, the destop and link icons take on the picture of a little dilbert. But now, only the link in ie7 has the icon, the desktop icon has a generic windows icon that looks like a window with tiny icons in it.
I changed the icon by clicking properties and change icon. when I clicked on the icon to go back to dilbert.com, the icon on the desktop changed back to the generic windows icon. But in my browser, I see the little dilbert icon by the website address.
Nowhere in my browser do I see the icon that is being used for the desktop.
I have also put other websites in my favorites list, and then created a shortcut on the desktop. The website shows the correct icon, but the shortcut, shows the same generic icon as the one for dilbert.com.
I haven't a clue how to fix this. And can't find anything like this problem on the net.

Answer:desktop icons don't match website icons

Hi and welcome to TSG.
is it the little favorite icon you are referring to?

Having an odd problem which I do not know how to fix..

I don't really have any icons at all, except for Windows Store & Microsoft Edge. That's it.
I've tried running sfc /scannow and rebuilding the icon cache but that's not helped.
Tried running a virus scan/anti-malware too.
I have tried googling around but can't seem to find much as it I can only find stuff that relates to desktop icons.
I'm using Windows 10 Pro (14393)
Any ideas? If you need any extra information, let me know!
Thanks

EDIT: I have read that it may be caused by a faulty update, however, I cannot roll back as I have not backed up. And to top it all off there are no updates available.
Also. The start screen is completely fine. No errors there.

If i try and browse for a file using another program, all the icons are fine. What is happening?

Answer:No Icons at all on Windows 10 Pro (14393) (NOT DESKTOP ICONS)

Comes and goes on my PC. Sometimes logout-login works, sometimes not. Ditto restart. From memory seems to happen when I'm using Firefox 50 after an hour or so, or downloading many wallpapers. Haven't tried to fix it yet.

I think it may have something to do with permissions because I just changed a lot for my account, but here it is:
On the desktop, apparently they only appear on programs or shortcuts, are small little blue emblem things pasted onto the original icons. They look like envelopes or something. Does anyone know what these are and how do I remove them? They don't directly disrupt anything I'm doing, I would just like them off because they are annoying.

EDIT: I just did something else, not sure what, but now some of them are displaying google Chrome emblem on the original icons! Someone please help.

My problem began when i was playing my xbox and talking to a friend at the same time. I was talking to him about pokemon and wanted him to watch a certain part in a random episode so i open up internet explorer and go to the website streaming all the episodes and then i get a pop up telling me that the page i was currently on was not safe and would perform a system scan. I immediately closed the window and everything seemed to be fine. This had never happened to me before on the website so i opened up internet explorer again and went back to the website and the next thing that happens is my desktop image goes black and every icon disappeared for only a few seconds and then re-appeared. I didnt know what to do so i restarted my computer and when i logged back on my desktop items were all still there but the image for mp3s, .rar's, and other files were all changed. for example i have mp3 files that have the image my avast internet security program icon which i have installed on my computer and my .rar files now display the mp3 image, but when i copy or drag and drop them into a folder they display their original images. I've refreshed my desktop, I've changed the resolution, and even changed desktop background image hoping that it would fix it but no luck. DOES ANYBODY KNOW WHATS WRONG!?

Hi, welcome to the forums

It is possible you've been inected with a Virus/Malware. There are a lot of popups that will tell you that you are infected when in fact it's the notification that's the infection.

Download MalwareBytes and berform a full system scan as soon as possible.

I have been having CPU issues at 100%. I contacted HP.com support and the last suggestion they suggested was to update the video card driver. I have a Nividia GSForce2 MX200 (Compaq Computer) They sent me to a link to their ftp site and I followed the instructions to download, install, and do a restart. When I restarted there were no desktop icons. It probably means that whatever files are damaged are preventing the startup from finishing. The normal internet programs that launch upon starting up the computer are not launched and I have to manually launch them by finding them. I tried doing a last known good configuiration, and when that failed in safe mode I couldn't access the Start Menu to do a system restore. I tried rolling back the driver to the previous one to no avail. I called HP and of course they wanted to charge me since it is out of warranty. I said it was their file and I asked for a supervisor who told the tech to tell me the same thing. So I was stuck with chat support. We were able to try the system restore which didn't work. I went to Control Panel and tried cliking on Taskbar or Start Menu but nothing happens. HP sent me 2 links for some patches:
HP said in an email "Based on the information that I gathered from the chat session,

While working offline, my Dell Latitude 131L goes into hibernate. When I restart the laptop it opens to a generic "Dell" desktop picture. There is no Start Menu or toolbar. No desktop icons are available. The cursor is in the middle of the screen, but is of no use. I was NOT installing any software or hardware.

I attempted to reboot, same screen appears.

I am able to start in "Safe Mode."

I attempted to use a Restore point, but each time (I tried several dates) it will not take.

I called Dell and we ran a Hardware test (Fn and Power keys), no errors were present.

Update: It loads REAL slow, taking about 15 minutes or more. But then I can not anything. After an hour of loading, I ran Kaspersky and no threats were found.

Restarted and got a blue screen that says
Checking the file System C:
The type of file system is NTSF.
The volume is dirty

Then it does a series of verifications that take a long time.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Answer:XP loads to a generic desktop, no start menu order desktop icons

The following steps will be a good start to resolving the issue. The first thing that you should do is to check that your hard drive is not failing. On a working computer, download the diagnostic utility from the hard drive manufacturer's website to create a bootable floppy or CD.Find the brand name of your hard drive. You will find this info on the label of the hard drive (most likely you will have to remove the hard drive from the box to read the label). You will also find sufficient info to identify the drive (the model number) by looking at the hdd code in the BIOS Setup Menu, and then googling the code. Another alternative is to use something like Everest or Belarc Advisor.

problem with desktop display properties

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Two nights ago I visited the web site Flash Fun Pages to find a joke to send to a friend who is sick with cancer. I did not end up sending anything and logged out. Yesterday, the background on my desktop was hijacked by this site. I ran Ad Aware SE and AVG both regularly and in safe mode, but did not find any viruses or malware. I also ran Trend Micro House Call but that did not find any problems either.

The problem was that the backgrounds were frozen at the end of the list, on "desktop", and could not be changed. I went on line to Downloads.com and looked under desktop display hijacked and found some freeware named Desktop Hijack Fix. This got rid of the Flash Fun Pages joke links and ads, but now my desktop display backgrounds are still frozen, although they are now frozen at the top of the list--'none'. I can choose a color, but I cannot access any of the background options, including the photo of my dog, which is my background of choice.

Interestingly, there are two users of my computer, and the other user does not have this problem. I can change the display properties backgr... Read more

Answer:[SOLVED] opaque titles for desktop icons can't be made transparent/desktop always act

I have gone through the 5 steps.

Attached please find the Hijack This log, and the 2 DSS logs.

I cannot post the Panda ActiveScan log from my first scan because I simply forgot to upload it and when I go back to the site all it says is that 11 tracking cookies were disinfected. But I am attaching the log from my second scan. Interestingly, there were 4 additional low level tracking cookies found and disinfected. The same 8 vulnerabilities--all from Microsoft updates--remain on my computer since the software does not disnfect these or offer the opportunity to disinfect them.

Spyware Blaster has been set up to protect everything on my computer.

But the problem is still that apparently my desktop is active and cannoot be turned off. I have run Iconoid and cannot make the titles for my desktop icons transparent because it states that the desktop is active. You can see in my previous posting the work that Cool Freak has done to try to figure this out before he kicked this over to "the experts".

Please help me. It's not only that my desktop is ugly with these opaque icon title boxes, there is something wrong with my computer that is causing this that we have not identified as yet, and who knows what havoc that might wreak in the future! Thank you very much for your attention and help.

Hi
The problem I'm having is at start-up. Windows loads properly, but when it's finished I have no Icons, no task bar, and can't right click on any part of the desktop. All I Have is the wallpaper displaying, that's it.
I noticed on task manager when I hit CRT-ALT-Delete, that Explorer.exe is not on the list of processes. when I type in explorer.exe in the new task, I get a error that says cannot find explorer exe. make sure path was straight etc etc. I was wondering if you might know what the problem is and allow me to take the steps in remedy this problem. I think the explorer has something to do with the desktop not loading properly.
Thank you

Referring to post at:

titled "Need HELP for Windows XP failure to run Explorer.exe after Welcome Page".

Press Ctrl+Alt+Del. If it brings up Task Manager, create a new task and run %windir%\explorer.exe. If this brings up the desktop, then according to the posted HijackThis log, this is my speculation (assuming your system is clean of malware):

Too many startup processes. Any undue change to any of them can cause problem during startup. If you could remember the very last time you had accessed the internet before this problem cropped up, did your hard disk light blinked a lot? Some programs were actively reading or writing to your machine. It could be Windows update or ZoneAlarm or others. Undo Windows update, uninstall ZoneAlarm, unintall IME, uninstall Java, etc. Try to minimize or simplify you startup process. Get replacement, another version of Java or from the other vendor, another firewall, another IME, etc.

Sorry for the delay. When I solved my similar problem, the thread is closed. So I post here in case anyone care to read. I uninstall ZoneAlarm, zap clean the registry with Registry Easy 4.7, replace it with Comodo Internet Security Free 3.5.54375.427. My XP sp2 is back to normal and desktop shows up after logon as normal.

Hi, my desktop is not displaying any icons, and right clicking doesn't work anywhere on the desktop. All this has occurred after a Trojan ran upon start-up. I have removed the trojan and the files it came from with an updated Microsoft security Essentials. The icons that should be on the desktop are still being displayed when I search for them on Windows explorer. I am running vista SP2 on a new desktop computer. I don't have any idea on how to remedy this problem. Any suggestions are welcome.

I suggest that you proceed to to our Security Center, Virus/Trojan/Spyware Help Forum, to have your system reviewed by a Security Analyst. Please be sure to follow THESE STEPS carefully before posting your logs in the Security Forum.

Please be patient as the Security Analysts are very busy and one will get to you as soon as possible.

OS: Windows 7 Pro machines that connect to a 2008 server

At a business we help, they gave us a call yesterday morning saying that only specific desktop icons had disappeared. Looking at their machines they were missing shortcuts to a program that runs from the server as well as short cuts to folders on the server. However, nothing in the server seemed to have changed, the folder is still there, the modification time was when they last used it the day before. They are in a domain if that would help. We were able to simply go and place the icons back on their desktops yesterday and said they haven't had any issues this morning.

Their shortcuts were not from a single folder on the server

So, the main question, what would cause only very specific desktop icons to disappear from their desktop?

Answer:Desktop Icons Disappearing On Multiple Desktop Workstations

This is probably why.

I've looked around, no one else seems to be having this problem.

I created shortcut icons for Word and the icons work fine but look like broken shortcuts. Most ppl suggest right click-properties-change icon. I do that and there are NO different options to choose from. Its a blank box.

This is a pic SIMILAR to my situation. The Opera icon is what I get with my Word 03 and Word 2010 icons. They both looked the way they should BEFORE I clicked on them the first time. But since then, they still work but just look awful.

I have a 32-bit win 7 if that matters. ANY help would be great!

After running Ad-aware, a trojan file was detected that couldn't be quarantined, cleaned or deleted. Husband found a way to get it deleted, but there was a warning saying that it was associated with another file. Deleted anyway.

Ran McAfee VirusScan and deleted unwanted programs it detected. After that, the mouse wouldn't work, so shut computer down by holding button in until shutdown (only way it could be shut down).

Start up went normal until the desktop background came up. Message stating "C: couldn't be found, check address again(???)" popped up. I clicked OK then it just sat there. I shut it off again.

Start up went normal again up through desktop background. No message this time. Mouse seems to work, but no icons or start up blue bar.

The only thing we can think of is the deleted file was associated with our desktop icons.

Thank you for your help.

I own a one year old Toshiba Tecra i5 laptop.
Recently when I save anything to the desktop, I can save the file but not a new shortcut.

I can no longer create a new desktop icon manually, and new icons are no longer created
automatically as they always had been in the past.

I work off my desktop a lot, so this has become a real pain. Any ideas?
A solution would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Answer:Can't create new desktop icons when saving to desktop in Windows 7

Here are some things you can try.

Click on the desktop and press F5.
or
Righ-click on the desktop > view > and uncheck "show desktop icons" then check it again.
or
Reload the icon cache.
In windows explorer make sure hidden files are shown. To do this go to:
Tools > folder options > view > select show hidden files, folder, and drives.
then go to C:\Users\username\AppData\Local (replace "username" to your username)
and delete IconCache.db
Then reboot.

It sounds like you may have tablet mode turned on. If so, turning off tablet mode should allow you to see your desktop again.

I made a free tool(for those who have more than 15 icons on desktop) to arrange your desktop icons into shapes like hearts, circles, stars and so on. It gives a bit of freshness to your desktop, icons arranged into a cute heart on a good wallpaper looks really nice.

You can set the height, width and position of the shape on the screen. It also have a function that saves and restores icons position, useful for those who change resolution a lot.

I attached some screenshots to see what I'm talking about.

The computer crashed hard. I was running an application call Stylizer, a visual css editor. One of the tasks it allows you to do is switch between several browsers to see how a web page may render differently. When I clicked on a form select element while in IE 7.0, it crashed. This is a repeatable bug that I have encountered before(don't click forms select again ya dummy). Anyways, all the applications that were running died and the computer froze requiring a hard reboot. When the computer returned, the desktop wallpaper image was zoomed. Obviously something became corrupted with the crash. I can't find a solution how to unzoom the wallpaper image. I tried a number of display and accessibility options without any luck(screen resolution, DPI, large icons, centered, stretched, etc.). I did notice if I changed from my usual "hide desktop icons", to "show desktop icons", the wallpaper image is then displayed correctly. I can also kill the explorer.exe process and the wallpaper will show correctly. If I run File>New Task(Run...)>explorer.exe again, it reverts back to the zoomed wallpaper. I tried a restore point from the day before. Wiped display drivers and installed the latest. Switched the dvi cable to a different output on the card. I uninstalled Stylizer, all it's files and registy entries. I've run sfc /scannow. I also tried rolling back to SP2 and back again to SP3 to re-install explorer.exe. Still zoomed. I've run out of ... Answer:Black Desktop, missing all icons, malware, start menu missing icons, programs all empty

I went through this same thing. The folders that say empty...are they light rather than normal? If so you didn't change the setting for files and folders correctly (I did the same thing at first) Open up windows explorer (my computer, etc) click on organize, then go down to folder and search options:

On the first tab (general) under navigation pane make sure "show all folders" is selected.

Then go to the next tab (view) and make sure those settings are correct, select the radio for "show hidden files, folders and drives" and make sure all your other settings are the way you want them.
I got mine from clicking on a link to a website I'd never gone to before and then what i thought was adobe told me that I needed to update my flash player to view the content on the page, I clicked ok and it took over my computer with the same exact things you're talking about.

Hi everyone. I'm having a problem in Windows 7 with my dual monitor setup. Being a student, my laptop comes with me during the day to classes, but when I return to my desk, I have a dual monitor setup through a docking station. I haven't had a problem getting the displays to actually output in extended desktop. Instead, I can't keep them set that way. Installing any program, opening the system task monitor, letting the computer idle into sleep, or any process that makes the screen "flash" sets the screens back to clone. It's even more annoying that for some reason, I cannot get the system to recognize the external monitor through the display settings. To get around this, I've set up schemes that I default to through the Intel Graphics card. I know it's a minor irritation, but somehow I managed to bypass that default in Vista Ultimate and can't quite figure out how to do it in 7.

I attempted to fill out my system specs in my profile as best as possible, but please let me know if any information more is needed from me. I apologize if anything is missing, this is my first post. Thanks for your help!

Hello. I am having this problem with my computer which uses Windows Home XP Edition since many months. All the desktop icons have disappeared, no right click option on the bare desktop and no shut down option in the task bar- must log off to be able to shut down.
I installed Defogger already. I ran both DDS and GMER but it was unsuccessful. DDS showed a blank screen and performed no scan, GMER made my computer shut down midway through its scan.
I ran RSIT after that. The scan proceeded without problem. The result of the log file is pasted below. Please find attached the info.txt
I'll be grateful if i could get assistance on what to do now.. Thanks.

Hi,
About one hour ago, my computer crashed during a game of GTAIV. Nothing happened during the CTRL-ALT-DEL instinct so I just switched off the laptop by the power button.
But when I came onto rebooting it a minute later, I discovered that there was just a blank blue screen staring at me. No start bar, no icoons, not even my background image. I'm stumped. The only way to get into things is by opening the sticky key warning, click ease of access, thus opening control panel, (i hunted around there) and entering my desktop through that way. Please, I need to finish up some work and get playing again.

Answer:Upon Reboot no start bar, desktop icons or even a desktop came up. HELP!

What makes dim desktop.ini icons show up on the Windows 7 pro desktop of my Dell laptop?

Is there a use for them?

Answer:What makes dim desktop.ini icons show up on my desktop?

It's caused by showing hidden files. Those two files are there because the underlying folders that make up the desktop hold those pesky hidden files.
What they do is to control a few display options for Windows Explorer (all per-folder customization is stored in them). If memory serves, for the particular case of the desktop folders they only control the display folder name (so that they localize the real name "desktop") and maybe show a different icon.
Generally, all desktop.ini files can be safely considered useless and deleted without any consequenses.

Hi, I just did a clean install of Win7 pro 64 bit on my laptop and am trying to get it back to how it was before. I chose to put my desktop on the toolbar. I went into the personalization and unchecked having the default icons on my desktop and that worked great - they are in the desktop list on the toolbar. What I can't seem to figure out is this:

Everytime I add a shortcut to my desktop it places one on my desktop as well as in the list that is located on my toolbar. I would like for all the shortcuts to be in the toolbar desktop, but not actually visible on my actual desktop. What should I do - can't remember how I got it to work last time.

Thanks!

Hy there...

I have a Dell Latitude E6500, Windows Vista Business ,SP2.

For the last 2 months I have problem with my desktop getting blocked and I cannot access the desktop icons directly; they can only be accessed through explore/start button.

The only way the desktop is succesfully unblocked is log off option, afterwhich I can access the icons normally.

I haven't found any specific problem or action triggering the problem, it just occurs (usually every day, 3-4 times).

Only thing I can mentioned as significant is that, couple of times I used the task manager, there are 2 users under users/ID section.

Thanks in advance.

Andrija

For some reason my desktop keeps becoming unresponsive. Everything else works fine. To open any program I have to go to start menu though. If I restart all is fine. Not sure what the problem is. Possibly something to do with IE9? I am running vista 2. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you

Answer:desktop icons become unresponsive also can't right click on desktop

Try uninstalling (rolling back) IE 9 Beta to IE8 in Add Remove Programs and see if that solves the problem. You can also do a System Restore to a time before you installed IE 9 Beta.

When I plug in the laptop RGB connection to my 42" plasma, sometimes (maybe 50% of the time) the icons on my desktop get pushed all the way over to the right hand side, which are then covered by whatever desktop gadgets I have. Annoying. When I disconnect the TV, icons return to their proper placements on the left hand side.

The Fn function key + F5 switches between the dispaly modes: 'Duplicate desktop', 'Extend', 'Projector only', Disconnect projector'. There doesn't seem to be any pattern, it's random in its manifestation. I always extend not duplicate, so I can watch media on the TV and still have computer stuff on the PC. I haven't updated any drivers lately, it's just been occuring more and more frequently. There shouldn't be any reason why this happens. How can I cure this please?

Answer:extend desktop to TV messes up desktop icons

When you right click on the desktop and click on View do you have have Auto arrange icons and Align icons to grid checked? I would play with those 2 settings to prevent this. Barring an easy fix, you could always use Fences which would fix this problem. A Guy

I've been looking around for something that can hide my desktop icons (or basically anything except my background & bottom navigation bar) if I'm not viewing the desktop.

In other words, when I have a (not full screen) window open, I want to be able to see my desktop background but not the icons on it. When I "view" the desktop, or don't have anything on top of it, I want the icons back.

Just wondering if anyone knows about a way to do that, because I think it'd look a bit cleaner.

Thanks,

- Leon Overweel

Answer:Hiding Desktop Icons if not viewing Desktop

not really the answer to your question, but have you considered:
with the focus on the 'open' window:
ALT + SPACEBAR key combo | X to maximize
ALT + SPACEBAR key combo | R to restore
ALT + SPACEBAR key combo | M to minimize

Howdy,

In the past after I logged on to the internet I was able to click on start and all my security icons would show up. At that point I could just double click on one and the program would launch. Here is my problem.

I have know idea how or what I did to make several of them disappear.

This is how I tried to fix the problem.

I went to all programs and left clicked and used the cursor in order to drag the missing programs back over to where they used to be.

As usual, because I have know idea what I am doing it did not work out. As an example I now have a folder in that spot with Spybot S&d next to it. If I double click a new window pops up showing a short cut to Spybot, I then have to double click on that to open the program.

I am sorry to ramble on like this, but because of my very limited knowledge this is the only way I know to explain my problem.

Can anyone steer me in the right direction?

Thank You for your time,
Dennis

You can check in: C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs and in C:\Documents and Settings\Default User\Start Menu\Programs to see if the shortcuts still exist. I don't think there is a way to have Windows reload these for you other then reloading the OS.

A while ago, I dled a program w/ many new icons. I changed them, and I didnt like the new ones, so i uninstalled the program. The ugly icons are still on my desktop and start menu. How do i change them back?

Answer:How can I get the default icons back?

Are these icons that came with the program and you just want to get rid of them? If so just drag the offending icon to the recycle bin. If this is a program that changed icons on your desktop that you want to keep such as My Computer etc, right click on the icon > choose properties > click change icon. You may have to point it to the folder that the icon / program resides in. Then choose which icon you want, click apply and you are done. Repeat for each icon you want to change.
