Windows 7 Service Pack 1 released

Question: Windows 7 Service Pack 1 released

Welp, it's been 2 days, but I don't see any thread here, so I might as well start one.As the title says, Win7 SP1 has officially been released. Most of you should see the option in Windows Update, assuming you actually ever look at it. (I know I don't.)For those of you who want/need the off-line installer, you can grab it from Microsoft.Oh, I almost forgot, you can read the list of changes for yourself. The most exciting change? "Restore previous folder windows at logon" will remember the position of those windows. How To Ask Questions The Smart Way

Preferred Solution: Windows 7 Service Pack 1 released

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer:Windows Vista Service Pack One Released!

It's been a while since I've been around.... but anyways...

Vista SP1 (for those who have been running Windows Update religiously, like myself) are not going to notice much of a difference in the way Windows Vista runs. You will in most cases notice file transfering from HDD to HDD or from one location on the HDD to another of the same HDD to be a bit speedier in initiation and termination after success.

For those who have been running the RC of SP1 are going to notice even smaller changes (like myself) who have been using RC1 since late December 07.

I look forward to what will come of SP1 and eventually SP2, which we all know will come.......

Windows XP Service Pack 3 Released to Manufacturing

Today we are happy to announce that Windows XP Service Pack 3 (SP3) has released to manufacturing (RTM). Windows XP SP3 bits are now working their way through our manufacturing channels to be available to OEM and Enterprise customers.

We are also in the final stages of preparing for release to the web (i.e. you!) on April 29th, via Windows Update and the Microsoft Download Center. Online documentation for Windows XP SP3, such as Microsoft Knowledge Base articles and the Microsoft TechNet Windows XP TechCenter, will be updated then. For customers who use Windows XP at home, Windows XP SP3 Automatic Update distribution for users at home will begin in early summer.

Thanks to everyone here who installed the public betas ? you not only gave us detailed feedback but also helped each other out with timely troubleshooting. Through the beta program we found several important issues and were able to confirm some essential fixes. We couldn?t have done this without you.

We will still be monitoring this forum during the next few weeks in case you have more feedback about the release of Windows XP SP3.

On behalf of myself, Shashank Bansal and Windows Serviceability, many thanks.

Source Windows Vista Service Pack 2 Released

Microsoft has just released the second service pack for the Windows Vista operating system which can either be downloaded as a standalone package or via Windows Update. The standalone package not only contains the Windows Vista Service Pack 2 but also the second service pack for Windows Server 2008, a combined package so to speak. The size of the 32-bit standalone package is about 302 Megabytes for the five language and 390 Megabytes for the seven language service pack and almost double that amount for the 64-bit standalone package which comes in sizes of 508 and 622 Megabytes.
The size of the Service Pack 2 is considerably smaller when downloaded over Windows Update with all downloads being less than 100 Megabytes in size for all possible editions. Microsoft has created a What?s New article at Technet which details the most notable changes that are introduced in Windows Vista Service Pack 2.
Changes that affect most users are the removal of the halp open outbound TCP connection limit, support for Bluetooth 2.1, improvements to Wi-Fi connections and configurations and the integration of Windows Search 4.0.
The standalone Windows Vista Service Pack 2 can be downloaded from the following pages:
Windows Vista Service Pack 2 5-language (English, French, German, Japanese, or Spanish) standalone pack download
Windows Vista Service Pack 2 5-language DVD ISO download

Microsoft Windows Vista Service Pack 2 Pre-Beta Released

Microsoft began distributing a pre-beta release of Windows Vista Service Pack 2 just a few days after announcing a second service pack for Windows Vista which according to Microsoft would come out before the release of the next Microsoft operating system Windows 7.
The pre-beta release is distributed to a select group of testers who have to run a program that adds a few keys to their Registry which enables the download of Windows Vista service pack 2 on Windows Update.
The release which has the build number 6002.16489 has a size between 290.7 MB to 296.9 MB. It contains all released updates but no obvious changes or additional features according to Within Windows.

KB955430 is the hotfix that has to be installed after making the changes to the Windows Registry. After installing that hotfix the real Windows Vista Service Pack 2 download becomes visible in Windows Update.

It will probably be only a matter of time until the Registry changes leak on the Internet which would enable the Service Pack 2 downloads for anyone making the changes to their Registry.

Microsoft has quietly released the first service pack for Office 2013 and you can find the download links at the bottom of this post. The update comes in both x86 and x64 flavors and range in size from 643 or 774 MB depending on your install option.

This is the first major update to the Office platform since it has been released and should be a welcomed update for those who use the platform. With SP1 now released, we will be curious to see if more IT shops move to the platform as many large corporations have adopted the unofficial policy of ?wait until SP1? before deployment.

Like all service packs before it, the package contains a roll-up of all the previously released updates. Along with all of the previous updates, SP1 includes update to improve security, performance and stability.

"Microsoft has quietly released the first service pack for Office 2013" - I guess there's cause for concern when there is a service pack released. Gone are the days of looking forward to a service pack or much less an update for some added functionality... not when they're having trouble keeping up with fixing the holes they released it with.

The SP2 upgrade for Windows Vista has been released.

The 32-bit version can be downloaded from here. The file size is 348.3 MB.

The 64-bit version can be downloaded from here. The file size is 577.4 MB.

The Microsoft article about the upgrade can be read here.

Pay particular attention to this section of the Microsoft article:

What you may want to know before you install SP2 for Windows Vista and for Windows Server 2008

Update: I've completed the SP2 upgrade.

Contrary to what Microsoft advised about the upgrade taking over an hour and involving several restarts, it took only 25 minutes and involved only 1 restart to complete the upgrade in my Vista desktop.

Everything appears to be working normally at this time.

The size of 64bit service pack 1 i heard was about 12gb for install, Is microsoft going to be releasing this on a million servers?

Can you imagine on release day how chaotic its going to be to get this update? I have a fast internet connection but im going to estimate that its going to take me about 4-5 days to just get a decent connection, then add another day to download it all. I already have a shit load of lag getting regular updates.

They need to upload bits and pieces to us then activate it on a certain time or something. I dunno what they can do but this is going to be hectic.

Answer:I know vista service pack hasnt been released yet. But 12gb? Come on!

You probably should have read more into that before "registering your complaint on the internet", Jeffrey Albertson style. Some reports have suggested it requires up to 12 GB of free space on the drive during, and only during, the install process.

Microsoft Office 2007 Service Pack 1 has been finally released - sort of - and can be downloaded from the Microsoft download website. The links are already up and it is only a matter of time when the links do not point to a Ups sorry link not found message but the real download link of the Office 2007 Service Pack 1.
I?m not sure why Microsoft decided to create the links first and wait with the page creation that those links lead to but it surely is annoying. The only link that is currently working is the Office Update link on the left side of the download center which requires a genuine Office 2007. The download links are not working right now.
Lets see what Microsoft has to say about the Service Pack 1 and the benefits for home users and businesses found in the Microsoft Office 2007 Service Pack 1 Whitepaper.
By deploying the 2007 Office system SP1, home users and businesses can quickly reap benefits in the following areas:
Stability. Using data from the Dr. Watson bug-reporting system, Microsoft fixed, at minimum, the five software bugs that most frequently caused each application in the 2007 Office system to crash. The 2007 Office system SP1 also improves the stability of server components in the 2007 Office system and compatibility with Windows Server? 2008, so companies can more confidently move forward with upgrade plans.
Performance. The 2007 Office system SP1 improves performance in applications that are pervasive in modern offices, most notably: Microsoft Office Exc... Read more

Microsoft finally released today the first Service Pack to version 2003 of its Visual Studio .NET product, long after the product's release and ever after its successor's release, version 2005. Since it has been a silent release, nothing has been said about what will happen next with it, and no mention of a possible second one has been done.

The Service Pack appears as a traditional service pack, including as usual improvements to the stability and reliability, along with a bug fixes rollup and improvements to the overall security of the program. Its total size is 156MB

You can read about and download it from here.

If you're still using Windows Installer 3.0, you'll need to upgrade to Windows Installer 3.1 first. You can download it from here.

(If I recall correctly, you'll need to insert the Office 2003 CD during the upgrade process, unless you're fortunate to still have the "Office setup files" saved in the Disk Cleanup list and haven't deleted them. If you don't have either, I don't believe the upgrade process will complete successfully)

Apparently, according to a friend, Vista SP1 is now released... The Final Version I guess...

I was talking with him, and he said that before I install the Service Pack, he said that I should reinstall Vista on my computer before I install the Service Pack... basically, reformat my computer, put Vista on it, then install the SP1.

But I'm not exactly sure I want to do that though... I have over 70 gig worth of stuff of my computer, and deleting it all would be catastrophic for me... I have a lot of PC games on there too, that means deleting all the save files, and having to restart all of them... I don't think that I could get all that back, since there's so much.

Is it recommended to reformat my computer before installing Service Pack 1, assuming that link I provided is the final version of Service Pack 1 for vista.

Just bought new never used factory fresh PC Acer AXC-605-UR29
Windows 7 Service Pack 1 manufacrtured this year,
I checked for latest updates and sure enough Service Pack 1 shows up in updates

Windows 7 Service Pack 1 for x64-based Systems (KB976932)

Download size: 9.1 MB

You may need to restart your computer for this update to take effect.

Update type: Important

Windows 7 Service Pack 1 is a recommended collection of updates and improvements to Windows that are combined into a single installable update. The service pack can help make your computer safer and more reliable. A typical installation will take about 30 minutes to complete, and you will have to restart your computer about halfway through the process.

This is a brand new PC that was loaded with factory Windows 7 SP1 so what is going on here?
Can I simply ignore the update? My only concern is that somehow MS updates will is considering
Windows 7 outdated and that I will receive no more updates since the Service Pack 1 is showing up
in the update section. How the heck is the possible with a factory image. One other thing that might help is that before I could check for any new updates Windows said I required a update to windows update. I
Did this update before finding the lastest updates. Also many updates are post cut off date for Windows 7 SP 0 so it did show updates until December 2014, I guess I will find out it Windows will continue to supply new updates this coming Tuesday...

Just wondered if anyone else has had the same issue when they tried to update Windows Vista SP1 to SP2. The reason I was trying to update is to update to Internet Explorer 9 for 6 as its my wifes laptop that she very rarely uses. I thought it would be quite easy to do but tried several times and still no joy.
The message that comes up is ERRORNOTFOUND(0x80070490)which I'm aware means Windows cannot search for updates.
I have checked for updates and the following is trying to update but also fails : Windows Search 4.0 for Windows Vista (KB940157)
The laptop is an Acer Aspire 5710 running Vista SP1 32 bit
Finally I have no repair disc as this is already installed so I tried a reboot, F8 and repair and that also failed....
Any suggestion what to try next??
Many thanks

When the user tries to login into their laptop whether cabled into our domain network or not, they receive a message "there are currently no logon servers available to service this request".  but if cabled into the network and they wait 5 minutes, they
are able to sign in without issue but it takes 2 to 3 minutes to load the page.  I signed into the laptop with my domain admin account and received the same message as the user, but when we tried cabled in (5 minutes later), i was able to sign in without
issue.  The troubleshooting steps:
1.  Updated the network driver today (still receiving same result)
2.  Re-added the computer to the domain today (still receiving same result)
3.  the event viewer is showing the 5719 NETLOGON message and also 1129 (but the user has been receiving this for a number of months)
4.  The only thing we haven't tried is creating a new user profile but the only reason I don't see that working is because if its happening with my domain admin account it can't be a profile issue.

Any ideas of what could be causing this and is there a fix for it?  I do see there is a hotfix but wasn't sure if we should run it or not.

I bought my cpu in June of 08. I have been having problems. I'm trying to fix them one by one. I was wondering if I had the correct Service Packs. Under Windows Updates I can see them all going back to when I bought it. It shows 1 service pack update, KB948465 on 9/19/09. It does not show a 2nd. Answer:Vista will not update from Service Pack 1 to Service Pack 2

To recreate the error, I suggest we try these steps to reinstall

Step 1: Run the System Update Readiness Tool
1. Please download the System Update Readiness Tool from the link below according to the System Type:

System Update Readiness Tool for Windows Vista 32-bit

System Update Readiness Tool for Windows Vista 64-bit

2. Double click downloaded file to run the System Update Readiness Tool.

Then, let's run System File Checker (SFC) to repair Windows Vista system files.

Step 2: Run System File Checker (SFC) to repair Windows Vista system files
1. Click Start, type "cmd" (without the quote) in the Start Search bar, right-click cmd.exe and click run as administrator.

2. Input the following commands and press Enter after each line.

sfc /scannow

Note: There is a SPACE between "SFC" and "/Scannow". This command will take several minutes to complete.

It's not officially released yet but I'm sure they will have a way for you to order it through MSAPOC eventually.

Came across this with quite a few links in it and as it's given as the solution, perhaps one of them will work for you.

Error code 800B0100 when trying to instal windows update using Windows - Microsoft Answers

From searching, it does seem to be a common problem which MS seem well aware of, given the number of fixes(?)

Anyway, hope one of them works for you.

I would like to install microsoft Office Home and Student and a logtech web cam for my on line classes I take, but they will not load. A message pops up saying I need to upgrade to Windows XP service pack 2. When I do that the computer stops working and the screen stays black. The only way to get my computer working again is to enter safe mode and un-install SP2 I have been on the phone with microsoft but got no where. To me it just seem like two programs are jiving or something? Any ideas.

I found the above entry in the registry of my Windows XP Home edition machine.
Since Service Pack 4 does not exist I am quite perplexed about it.

My OS is an authenticated clean installation Windows XP Home Edition Sp3 that has always been updated using MS Automatic Update. Why then would the registry reference a Service Pack 4?

The full registry entry is included. See attachment.

Any Ideas anyone?

The HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Updates\Windows XP\SP4 is a normal key for XP, it is after all the logical category for "updates after SP3"

Hi all,OK, due to a motherboard, processor, memory and graphics card upgrade I need to re-install Windows. However, I have the plain XP version. Not the Service Pack 1 Edition, let alone the Service Pack 2 Edition.Microsoft's site states that I cannot access updates unless I have Service Pack 2 installed but I can't figure out how to get it. I've tried to download it from Microsoft's site but it states that my PC already has been updated to Service Pack 2.So how do I get hold of the update? If I logged onto Microsoft's site once I have the plain, vanilla version of XP installed, is there any way of getting hold of Service Pack 2 from their site?If not, then how do I get the Service Pack? Many thanks.

Answer:Windows XP Service Pack 2, Please Help

Hello and welcome to TSF.

You have several infections going on in there, one of which is identified as W32.HLLW.Gaobot.AO , which allows a hacker to remotely control a compromised computer. Please disconnect this PC from the Internet immediately. If you do any banking or other financial transactions on the PC or if it should contain any other sensitive information, please get to a known clean computer and change all passwords where applicable, and it would be wise to contact those same financial institutions to alert them to your situation.

Though the Trojans have been identified and can be killed, because of their backdoor functionality, your PC is very likely compromised and there is no way to be sure your computer can ever again be trusted. Many experts in the security community believe that once infected with this type of Trojan, the best course of action would be a reformat and reinstall of the OS. In all honesty, if this were to be my computer, I would reformat and reinstall Windows XP.

Please read these for more information:

As a recent member of tech-forum I was not surprised to find so many threads expressing concern or disappointement over XP Service Pack 2.

To quote from the August edition of Australian PC magazine, "SP2, more than any other of it's predecessors, is a risky patch job." And, "SP2 is no mere patch job. It's a major upgrade." As if this isn't enough, "SP2 focuses almost exclusively on security, even ahead of backward compatability. This means that some existing applications are going to break, and even some hardware may not work correctly."

Frightening. I would suggest that the extra security provided by SP2 is not worth the potential drama for the average user. I for one would be avoiding it like the plague without a complete system backup/restore regime.

Answer:Windows XP Service Pack 2 (Not!)

Answer:Windows XP and Service Pack 3

I don't know if you'll get problems updating to SP3 via Microsoft updates. I installed it through the'stand alone' installer so I could burn to disc for future possible use.Unfortunately I did have problems, such as optical drive not being recognised, and other minor things but my own fault really. It's suggested to disconnect from 'Net and close all security software. Install SP3 and re-enable security before connecting again.

I know this is very old news... but I am having to update a computer running Windows XP Home that should have been updated with Service Pack 2 a long time ago, but wasn't.  Trouble is, I cannot find where to get it anywhere.  I go to the Microsoft site and they have you do Microsoft Update, promising you'll get Service Pack 2, but all that happened was that I got a whopping 64 updates installed (it took an hour) and... no Service Pack 2.I even combed through the downloads section of the Microsoft site and couldn't find it ANYWHERE.   I thought this was a super critical update?  So where is it?Then I found it on some other non-Microsoft update site, and spent an hour downloading/installing, except it hung during the final "Performing Cleanup" stage for an hour until I had to reboot it.  The computer was completely screwed up after that and I had to do a System Restore.  And so... still no Service Pack 2.I can't wait 4-6 weeks to send away for the free CD from Microsoft, either. Can somebody please tell me where to download a legit copy of Service Pack 2?   I'm going crazy here, as I have people with devices that use software that won't work unless they have SP 2 installed...thanks for any help

Is this true? Or is their any download I can download before hand to have it ready encase of this situation?

I haven't heard of any graphics problems on SP2

If anything, your graphics will be better because Microsoft is still supporting SP2, SP1 and below aren't supported anymore.

You can download SP2 on it's own, and install it later. Or you can slipstream it with your SP1 disk.

He began and stopped with Service Pack one. After it downloaded he restarted his computer but it will not boot up.

Any advice? Thanks

Answer:Windows XP and service pack 1

Take it back to the shop and tell them what happened. They formatted and install Xp on your new drive using a disk without the SP-1 on it. At my shop, we put all the updates on before it leaves. It is tough for people to do it on a dialup so we provide the service. I can't believe they didn't do the same.

Windows SP2... Is it really that good? Everytime I have been convinced to install this... MONSTROSITY... I have had nothing but trouble. Everytime you want to do, ANYTHING, SP2 stops you, or does something to annoy you or get in your way. I want the best protection around but I want some damned freedom too! Surely, the makers of the internet can just put an end to viruses and malware, there must be some way, other than making SP2... the worst thing that ever happend to Windows.

This Microsoft page, Windows XP Service Pack 3 Overview, shows this update with a Date Published of 12/10/2007. Why doesn't it appear during Windows Updates?

Answer:Windows XP Service Pack 3

An overview is just an article written on what it changes, etc.

They always come out before the SP is released, my guess is so admins can see what to expect before deployment.

The Vista SP1 changes have been published for quite some time, too.

I have been attempting to update to Windows Service Pack 3 on my PC but each time during the installation it errors out and reverses the installation. The first error message that I receive reads "Access Denied." After that messages pop up along the lines of "Installation failed, the installation process will now be reversed" and when it finishes the reversal it says "Windows may not function properly." Each time I start my PC it tries to install Service Pack 3 and this really slows down the functionality of my PC so I've actually limited my automatic updates so that it only notifies me of updates and lets me choose when to download/install them now . I am currently running Service Pack 1 on my Computer via Windows XP Home. It keeps asking me to install Service Pack 2, but I don't want to because I have heard rumours of people getting graphics problems after that where they have ended up having to re-install their graphics drivers.

Is this true? Or is their any download I can download before hand to have it ready encase of this situation?

Answer:Windows Service Pack 2

Do you have integrated graphics or an add-on card? I'd doubt that integrated graphics would suffer from what you are describing. If SP2 does cause these problems for you, you could always go to the card manufacturer's site and get the latest drivers. If there ever were such issues I'd safely bet that they have ironed them out by now.

I haven't heard of that personally, but I've just now made the switch to SP2 myself. Nothing broke for me. You can run without SP2 but I wouldn't advise it unless you are using a limited account. I use the limited account exclusively and I use RunAs to give rights to whatever needs it, e.g. programs and games etc..

so installed windows service pack 3.
and after reboot of the comp, it took forever for windows to load
the welcome screen was there for a minute.
so i uninstalled windows servce pack 3 from safe mode, cuz from regular mode, it took a lot of time. but i stil have all the windows secuirty updates .
the rebooting of the comp takes a long time
how do i solve this?

Answer:Windows service pack 3

You should have waited before uninstalling SP3. When a new service pack is installed and the PC is restarted, it usually takes a little bit of time for Windows to install and verify and configure the new service pack. Since the service pack was uninstalled in safe mode, there's a good chance that it didn't uninstall completely or correctly. You should try to reinstall it, then uninstall it (if necessary) in normal mode. Or try a system restore to a date before the problem started, or try a safe repair install using your Windows install disc. Here's a guide to performing a safe install:

AS you know Microsoft never released a SP for Windows 98 SE...If you click here there is an UNOFFICIAL Service Pack being offered for Windows 98 SECOND EDITION.Emphasis on: UNOFFICIALAlso click hereWith a thread: click hereGood and bad experiences as you would expect.FYI!However I'm sure this does the same click here but not a SP.

Answer:A Service Pack for Windows 98 SE eh?

Just downloaded and installed - well someone had to. First two mirrors were busy so I cannot be the only one.Anyway, after reading the info I tried the defrag which was supposed to be a bit quicker than the standard 98 version. I can now report that it isn't.......It's a LOT faster !!! I try to defrag once a month and my C drive would normally take 1 to 2 hours (just did it in 10 minutes) and the other large disk would be an overnight job (took just 30 minutes). No problems so far (fingers crossed, touch wood, etc.)In case anyone is wondering, it does appear in the add/remove program list.

Having recently re-installed Windows XP on my existing PC (due to a hard-disk failure) I find that I need to instal XP Service Pack 1a to run Pinnacle Studio Plus 9.4 software. I've searched for this Service Pack and have found a zipped version on the Microsoft site (and on several other sites) but when I try to instal this the installation terminate with a message telling me that a large list of files contained in the installation (presumably from their own site) are corrupt. It then refers me to a Microsoft Update site to obtain a FULL version of the Service Pack which does not require a live connection to the internet during the installation process. However I can find no mention of such a file on the Microsoft site. Can anyone suggest a source for the full XP SP1a please?

Answer:Windows XP Service Pack 1a

You need to install SP3, it's a cumulative patch containing all the security and critical updates. Go to the Windows Update page and download it. click here Make sure to install antivirus software first.
