Preferred Solution: Monitor power light blinks green on boot

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi,
I picked up this Alienware 5700 off ebay to hopefully refurbish for my son but I'm new at this and still learning and so this thing has me baffled. The laptop is in pristine condition but shows no signs of life. When I plug in the power supply the green light on the power supply goes from solid green to blinking rapidly to the point you can barely see it. To me that would mean a short somewhere right ? If so where ? Has anyone else ever had experience with something like this ? I just don't want to go buying a new battery for a laptop that maybe fried already. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Answer:No power, no lights but green light on power supply blinks rapidly

Remove the laptops battery and try the AC power only. If the green light does the same, it still could only be a bad AC adapter, or at worst, a shorted laptop motherboard

Hi, my X240 laptop has suddenly stopped turning on. When I press the power button, the indicator light flashes green three times. I've switched out the AC adapter, same result. Can anyone tell me what the three flashes indicate? Is my motherboard fried or is it potentially something else I can troubleshoot? Thanks!

Hey all,

Weird one here. Got myself a new graphics card the other day, upgrading from a Radeon x1650 pro, which died after 4 odd years of good service, to the Radeon HD5450, and everything seems to have gone successful except for since installing it, when I press the power button to boot, the PC's power light will blink 7 times and then boot up normally on the 8th blink.

I was kinda in 2 minds about whether or not to troubleshoot this if I'm honest, but figured I might as well in case it could be causing some kinda damage. I can't see any error's appearing, nothing in event logs, as far as I can tell the PSU should be more than capable, everything seems to be performing as expected, it's just these 8 blinks before the system starts to boot.

I've reseated the memory and Graphics and tried booting with a few non-essential components disconnected, which fixed it for the first boot, but the issue reappeared for every boot after that.

As well as my listed components I've also got a PCI NIC (D-link DGE-528T), wireless KBoard + Mouse, USB Wireless Adapter, a SATA DVD RW and a couple of fans (1x80mm, 1x92mm and 1xLED120mm)

...any ideas?

Cheers,
Sean

When I shutdown the vista PC the monitor power light stays green and a box saying, "self test feature check" floats all around the monitor. My XP machine after shutdown the power light turns amber with nothing being displayed.
Does anyone have any ideas? The monitor should hibernate when the PC is shutdown.

Hello All -I'm posting to the forum as I'm at a complete loss with support. I recently purchased a ThinkPad T450s, which worked well for about a week, but has since failed to boot properly after normal use. The motherboard / system board has been replaced three times by Lenovo support (twice with the depot and once on-site). After receiving the system yesterday from the depot (again after normal use and trying to resume from sleep mode), the ThinkPad won't boot. The power light blinks on and the backlit keyboard lights up for a few seconds, only to have the system shut itself down with a light pop. This cycle repeats with the system attempting to power up anywhere from two attempts to eleven (no BIOS flashes or any other signs of life). I've tried all options noted in the forum and suggestions from support (remove battery, hard reset, etc.), but haven't had any luckAgain, I'm at a loss, and simply want my system to work or be replaced. If anyone has any insight, it would be greatly appreciated.??Thank you!

My laptop was working fine yesterday, charging and powering on an off normally. It updated without my telling it to. When it was complete (since it said don't turn computer off until finished) I either just shut the lid or I shut it down when it was done. This morning when I wake up and try to turn it on it won't power up. Then I noticed that the power button was blinking, like it is in sleep mode, tried pressing 10 times then holding down power button for 30-60 seconds and still nothing. Next I saw that although the power is plugged in the battery light won't come on. I don't know if it is charging (it could be dead). I tried a bunch of different outlets and that isn't the issue. I also listened to the computer and there is a very soft high pichted noise that dissapears if you unplug it, and that when you hit the power button and it starts blinking, the sounds changes fom high to lower pitch and back again over and over. But no other sounds or fans kicking on or drive spinning. I am pretty sure it isn't the power cord but have no way of checking. And I can't remove the battery without voiding the warrenty. Anyone have any advice, besides calling to have Lenovo send me a box to send it back to Lenovo since it is only 4 months old and still under warrenty?

Answer:Lenovo Edge 15 laptop 80K9 battery light won't come on, power light blinks

Suggest you eliminate problem 1. Do you have spare power supply unit? Worth trying that first. Your battery may be in sleep mode and won't wake up as battery is drained and hence needs charging. 2. You can go to local retailer and suspect a good one (John Lewis) will let you charge it for 30 mins. Ideally go back to person you bought it from. 3. Once you are in use restore to go back to last working point. I have to telll you the support from Lenovo and Microsoft was very very very disappointing. I tried to even return the PC and swop for HP as mine is only 2 months old. However, the answer was send back to Lenovo. Hope you find a way to get it charged

I just purchased a used comp off ebay (probably a bad mistake) that was suppose to boot to c:. This is a AMD 1800 XP, 128 MB RADEON video card, 60 gig hardrive, CDRW, 52X CD. When I try to boot the computer the monitor light immediately goes from green to orange. The monitor works fine on my other computers. I also noticed that the video card was loose when I first got it out of the box, i secured it but then found out the problem. I have also used a video card out of another one of my comps, nVidia 32MB, and still got the same results. I can usually figure stuff like this out, but this MB is extremely complicated, and the power supply has more wires and cables than I have ever seen. I thought maybe the hardrive wasnt spinning and tried another one and still had the same result. My video card and processor fans are all running so there seems to be power. The CD drives have power. I also noticed that there is a light on the front of my case, dont know what it is, but it also turns orange. Any suggestions.

I just recently Inhearted a computer from school, after my IT teacher couldn't get it to run. Both my IT teacher and I thought for sure it was the power supply or the power switch. The Problem is that the computer dosn't do anything at all when you press the power button. My teacher told me that when he first started having the problem he would press the power button, and maybe Once out of every fifty times it might boot up. then the problem got worse, and only started like every 100th time, now it dosn't work at all. The system is a Used MDG with a 1.5GHZ cpu, and mostly all stock parts. The system came with a stock 300 watt PSU. When I first took it apart, I pulled out the power supply completely, and tried to put in another one, that I had laying around, however it had the wrong connector, so I just put the old one back in. when I put the PSU back in, it seemed to have power, as I could hear the electricty following thorugh it, and a green Led light would light up on the mother board, however if I pushed the power button, it would still do nothing, the CPU fan wouldn't even turn. The only time I actually notice the CPU Fan do a quick turn, is if I disconect the power from the PSU for a long period of time, then reconnect it. So I went to the local computer store tonight with the switch, and the man tested for me, and it did end of being a faulty switch, so I purchased I brand new. I then put it into the computer, and still nothing, and believ... Read more

So today I was just watching a YouTube video, not gaming, not doing anything too intensive. Suddenly my computer shuts off with the power button blinking green. No BSOD, just powered off and won't turn back on. I tried unplugging the power cable and holding down the power button for 30 secs with no luck. My computer is pretty hot idle at 60 degrees Celsius. But it's been this way for years with no problem. Could something overheating just by watching a YouTube video? When a CPU overheats it goes into blue screen right? So it can't be my CPU. I have a cooler master PSU. CM is a trusted brand. And I also have an MSI motherboard.

Answer:Computer randomly turns off with green blinking green light on power

Doesn't necessarily mean the screen will blue out because of heat problems mate run the BIOS and post back the readings for the CPU temp (seems a tad high to me for idle) and the CPU fan speed.

The other thing to do is check out the PSU as well via these
PSU - Jump Start

http://www.sevenforums.com/vip/257690-psu-how-test.html#post2130086

but try the BIOS first and if you do the PSU stuff DO NOT attempt to open the device itself you just need to measure the volts on the leads. However volts does not necssarity mean enough current (amps)

My computer was down when I came back from lunch and could not get it to come back on.  If I hold the power button down for about 7 seconds it blinks orange but there is not noise from the fan coming on or post beep.  Also the green light on the back is not on either. All of the other equipment sharing the same power strip come on but not the desktop so it is not the power strip.  I also tried to set it up in another office on a completely different circuit and still does the same thing. What should I try next?

Which form factor, desktop, mini-tower, small form, ultra-small form?
From the (desktop) manual: Blinking amber light indicates a problem with the system board.
Are any of the 4 diagnostic LEDs on when it won't boot? ,They're on the front of the PC next to the power button. Look up error codes in the manual.
Possible power supply failure if the green light is off on the back. Can you try a different power cord? What happens if you push the power supply diagnostic button on back of PC next to that (green) power light?

Aloha: Pavilion 17-f001dx (Windows 10) Upon plugging in  the AC Adapter, the laptop power led (White) blinks once, then goes dark.  Pressing the start button, the  Laptop will not boot, and the same LED blinks 3x's. This behaviour applies when the battery is inserted or not.  Also, Hard Reset done with no change.  No other LED (Caps) blinks.  Also verified both sticks of RAM with no errors (used another laptop).  I could not find any reference to this issue.  i have already read the HP guide "Troubleshooting LED Blink Codes..."  Please note, only LED that blinks is the Power LED.  Caps LED does not blink at all.  I have also verified the output of the AC Adapter (voltage only).  The weird thing is this,  every so often when plugging in the laptop, the Power LED will light up (white) and stay lit, then the laptop will boot with no issue.  I have been able to recreate this with the battery inserted or not.  I am at a loss.  Could the Power Jack be intermittent and cause an issue?  Mahalo (thank you ) for any assistance!

A friend of mines computer starts, but his green monitor light blinks on and off.(he uses a CRT). Any suggestions?

Answer:Monitor light blinks on and off

The light blinks green? Or orange?
Usually a blinking light means no signal. Meaning the PC is not sending a signal out the video card, meaning something on the PC is trashed.

Easiest thing to do is test the monitor real quick on another PC that IS working. If the monitor works, then something is wrong with the PC. And you'll have to troubleshoot it from there.

But this will get you started. Chances are good it's not the monitor that is the problem.

She plugged in the power cord and it would not come on when pressing the power button.  Laptop was plugged in overnight and this morning same issue - the power light just blinks five times when you press the power button. This is the same behaviour whether plugged into power or not. I've tried holding down the power button. Tried with battery removed and A/C power, but then no light comes on at all.  I've tried removing the battery and A/C power, holding the power button down for 30 seconds, then install battery and plug in A/C power, but no difference.  I tried a different A/C power adapter and no difference. Any ideas?

When I sign out of my user profile on my 2 Acer laptops and then click shut down, the computer goes black indicating that it is shutting down. However, the power light blinks until it shuts down completely. I don't know if it's a hardware issue or what but when hibernation is disabled, it tells you its shutting down and the power light doesn't blink (instead it shuts down normally). This is not a UEFI BIOS, it is a Legacy BIOS therefore it doesn't have the option to enable or to disable fast startup. This occurs on my Acer Aspire 5250 and Acer Aspire 5749 laptops. My Acer desktop doesn't do this, but it has a UEFI BIOS.

Can anyone understand what I am saying?

Guys,

My Toshiba Laptop running Windows 8.1 runs great! However, about every four to five months the Power button blinks when lifting the cover. When I press the Power Button, it boots fine. Why does the Power button blink?

For the record, I always put my computer in sleep mode by closing the lid. Never shutting down. The battery is hardly ever used and says fully charged (1oo%) It is on AC Power all the time.

Answer:Power Light Blinks on Toshiba Laptop?

I think it blinks to show it's in sleep mode and pressing the power button wakes it up. You can test this by putting the laptop to sleep manually.
There's a setting in Control Panel > Power Options where you can change what closing the lid does, try setting it to Shutdown then check the power light goes out completely. You can change it back to Sleep afterwards.

I doubt anyone here remembers, but I made a topic here last month regarding a laptop I was attempting to fix. Basically, someone spilt soda over it and tried to repair it, but after that failed he gave it to me and told me that if I could fix it, I could keep it.

At that point, the problem was when I turned it on, the screen would stay black, but I could hear noises and the power light slowly flashed. I noticed that there was no memory in it though, and since the issues seemed to reflect that, I decided to buy some ram and hope that it was going to be my only problem.

Well, unfortunatly, it wasn't. Now the problem has changed that the power light flashes faster than before, but the screen still remains blank.

Does anyone have any idea what the problem may be?

EDIT: On a second test, it appers that the flashing is the same speed as before. Also, when I attempt to turn it on, the ligh will stay on for a second and I can almost hear the laptop starting up, but that stops when the light begins to blink.

Answer:Satellite does not turn on - power light blinks

Hi

What notebook do you use?!!!

Seems the notebook provides a blinking code. This means that a hardware error was detected.
Usually the short blinking means 0 and long means 1.
The authorised service technician should be able to read such code and to locate the hardware malfunction.

Mostly it?s something wrong on the motherboard!
So I don?t think that you will be able to fix it. That?s not possible if you have no experience and the right tools and parts.

So in my opinion you should contact the ASP in your country for an help!

Good luck

I have an HP Pavilion 15-p043cl with the same problem. The power/charge light blinks white three times when you press it. The laptop never actually powers up. I've tried with and without the battery and numerous other power adapters. It even blinks while the battery is removed, which is strange because the I've opened up the case and measured 19.5 volts on the motherboard, which is why the light even flashes in the first place.

The customer said the computer felt really warm, and now it's not working and this is happening. My only guess is that one of those hundreds of small components on the motherboard died/shorted out. So this seems to be a common issue with some HP models.

I absolutely hate the way the light bar around the power supply blinks brightly when the computer is in idle or hibernate mode. It makes it impossible to sleep with the computer in the bedroom. Isn't there some way to adjust the setting so that this doesn't happen?

Answer:windows 7 power light blinks when hibernating

Put it on a power strip along with all your wall warts. Then when you set to hibernate it will complete at which time you can switch off the power strip. It saves a lot of power.1/3 of highway deaths are caused by drunks. The rest are by people who can't drive any better than a drunk.

My G72 will not start.  I have tried all the tricks for unplugging power cable, battery, holding the button down, etc. I have pulled RAM, verified power to the system board using a voltmeter.... No matter what I try, when I put the battery in and hook it to power, then press the power button, the AC power LED blinks three times.  It does this if the power is not hooked up; it does not do it if the battery's removed (with AC power). I have tried two separate AC adapters, known working ones. I have voltage at the system board, so I don't think it's the power connector.  The system responds only with the 3 blinks when I hit the power switch. What do the three blinks mean? I can find nothing online specific, and it's out of warranty.

Just since yesterday my six week old Inspiron 7559 sometimes fails to start and when it does this, the Power and Battery Status Light blinks, two times amber then seven times white, repeats forever.  What does this 2/7 blink mean?  Is it a clue to what is wrong?  The laptop does start sometimes if I hold it at an angle.  Makes me think something is not connected properly inside.  Any ideas?

Answer:Inspiron 7559 Power Status Light Blinks

Hi,
System LEDs are not Diagnostic Indicators. I’d suggest that you follow the steps mentioned below and check for issue resolution.

Switch off the computer.
Disconnect the AC adapter from the system.
Remove the battery from the computer.
Press and hold down the power button for 15 seconds.
Then connect back all the peripherals and check for issue resolution.

Also, I would suggest you reseat a few components, like memory, hard drive and optical drive and see if that makes a difference. In the link below punch in the system service tag or express service code and you can access the user manual for removing and reseating components. http://dell.to/18r60nI Please let me know if this helps.

When you press the power button, the power light goes on steady, the HDD indicator blinks once, then the system shuts off. Never get anything on the screen.

Once in a great while, the system will actually boot into Windows and works fine.

The battery is charged, the charger is good.

I have tried removing RAM, HDD and can't get into BIOS even, unless it is one of those off chances the system stays on.

Could it be something is shorting out? I've tried taking out the battery and unplugging it and holding the power button to discharge, but no luck.

Answer:Dell Inspiron 17R Power Light on, HDD Blinks, then Shuts Off

It sounds like the computer isn't getting past the POST (Power On Self Test) where is looks at all the peripherals to be sure there isn't problem.

You have pulled the hdd and re-seated it, removed the RAM and re-seated it.  But if there is more than one RAM module you should remove one of the two modules (assuming that there are only two) to see if you have a bad module.

Who is the manufacturer of the hdd?

(About a month ago- upgraded to 2 GB)Also, the AC Adapter wire was torn a few months ago, and was replaced 2 months ago, but not with a compaq standard adapter. (I bought a generic one with the same specs.)The laptop has been running fine for the last 2 months, and had no issues with anything. But yesterday, as I was browsing the internet, the computer suddenly turns off.  (The battery and ac adapter were both plugged in.)I though the ac adpter may have gotten loose, so I replugged it in, and then tried turning it on. This did not work. I was late for class, so I took off without testing it further.I came back about 8 hours later, and tried to turn it on again. (Battery and AC adapter both in) It turned on, and I was able to use the computer for about 15 minutes. When all of a sudden, the computer turned off again, with no warning. However, this time, when I attempted to turn it on, it fails. I hear the cd drive running, but nothing else happens. The screen remains dark, and the other major sign is the the Power button (IO) constantly blinks orange. The LCD light on the panel also blinks (IO) in the same fashion. I have tried many things, such as unplugging th... Read more

Greetings,

I purchased my Toshiba Satelight l775 brand new 7 months ago, this is so crazy. It wont power on, i use the laptop plugged to adapter 4 to 8 hours a day, then the laptop goes unused and unplugged for 16 to 20 hours a day.

This is my 3rd laptop, i know i've put more strain on the previous two (HP and Acer). I've never had a laptop go out on me this quick, even that $300 acer laptop went through more strain and never went out in the 15 months i had it.

My backup laptop is a 4 year old HP, i've had it for 4 years, its been dropped several times, used and abused still going! i just had to upgrade ram and hard drive. But, this Toshiba! she was so beautiful when I saw her!

I've never dropped her, never spilled anything on her, so why is she putting me through this stress at a bad time???

A bad time because even though i'm under warranty, i'm going on vacation in 2 days!!! I need her, i'm not trying to take my old HP that came out in 2008.

I can't afford to send my Toshiba off for 2 weeks, not right now.

Today, my virus software was doing its typical scheduled scan, i didn't have the laptop charging, because i was off of work, so when i'm off the laptop gets used more and charged more. I look at the laptop and its off, i just figured, O....my battery died, let me plug in the adapter and do some reading. Well nothing ever happened. 8 hours later, i've been working on this for over 8 hours, i've searched all over google, many forums, none ... Read more

I have a Sony VGC-RB42G computer. I recently moved my computer, cleaned off all the dust, and when I plugged everything back in, it won't power up. The light on the power supply blinks green, inside the motherboard also has a green light that blinks as well. It has a ticking sound too, but I am not sure if it is coming from the power supply or the motherboard. Any idea what could be wrong.

FYI, I have already unplugged everything from the power supply, pulled out the ram, checked the battery, and put everything back together and still no change. One thing I thought was strange was after I unplugged everything, I pulled the power into the power supply again and this time the green light came on but did not blink. It stayed solid.

So I just purchased a refurbished Thinkpad Yoga, and all was great for a little while. Then I decided to shut it down and set it aside for a few minutes. After coming back, it now refuses to even POST. I tried every power cycle I could think of, in various combinations, and browsed several forums. In the end I found no functional solution. Current Status: System responds in no way other than the 'i' light (in the Thinkpad logo) blinking three times when the charger is connected, or the same when the reset button is pressed while the charger is still connected. Nothing else illicits any sort of beep, light, or otherwise. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks and regards.

I have a feeling you had opened up the back cover to fiddle around with the components (be it a change of SSD or the 3g/4g modem). the symptoms you described sounds exactly like a disconnect MB cable. you can try to open up the back cover, and around the left side, you will see a cable labelled "MB". secure it properly, and the computer should be responsive now.

Answer:No power to PC but I get a green light on motherboard

The eMachines power supply (and possibly the motherboard) is bad. Just because you have a green light, doesn't mean that the power supply or motherboard is good. It takes many separate voltages to operate a computer. The geen LED means only that you have +5volts to the motherboard

I'm helping a friend fix their computer monitor and I'm a little stumped!

They've got a Samsung SyncMaster 930B monitor with constantly blinking green light and no images displaying, just a black screen. Pushing the power button on the monitor does nothing, not even turn it off. Unplugging and replugging it also does nothing to the blinking light. The screen will not turn on, not even during reboot. The hard drive fan seems to be running and computer seems to be processing during reboot. I even tried hooking the monitor up to a laptop to see if it would work, with no results.

The computer itself is a three year old HP Pavillion a1340n with Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005. It has Norton Antivirus. Unfortunately, I cannot get in to see if there is anything else wrong with it without lugging another monitor over from somewhere else and trying to hook it up.

Answer:Help! Blinking Green Light on Monitor

If, as you indicate, you've tried it on a known working system and it still doesn't work then the most likely culprit is the monitor itself. If you can find a reasonably priced repairer then get them to fix it. It usually works out a lot cheaper, tho', to buy a new one.

Hi guys,

Since the start of last week when using my PC desktop the monitor would turn off randomly. I would switch it back on and then five minutes later it would go off again. Now however when I switch the computer on the screen boots up with the user accounts then goes off instantly. I tested the monitor against my laptop and it seems fine. Would you be able to help? My computer knowledge is very limited.

Monitor will not boot with computer

Just purchased a new system (w/o monitor) and I am in the process of setting it up. I'm using the old monitor from my previous system with no problems until recently. Now for some reason this monitor just won't go active (green light) when the system boots. The monitor just stays on standby (orange light). I reconnected all the cables, restarted the monitor and computer in different sequences, and all attempts have failed. The strange thing is that this same monitor still works just fine with my previous system. What gives??

i have this problem it just start like yesterday and when i turn on my computer it sounds like its booting up like normal except the monitor will just blink with a green light and i checked to make sure the cords and everything was good and it still dont work.

Answer:green flashing light on monitor

A light blinking at a rate of at least once every second often seems to be made to indicate there is a problem, as in the makers of the device that has the light did it to show that there is a problem, so at least the monitor "knows" there is a problem...So maybe you should read the manual or contact the manufacturer and see what the blinking light means.
First things I would try are to plug it into a different PC, trying a different data cable, a different power cord, and a different outlet. If all of the above fails (including reading the manual or contacting the mfr.), it is probably a part inside the monitor not working correctly. Make sure all connections are secure, and not crooked or anything, including the video card's (if there is one) connection the the motherboard's slot, any internal power cord to the video card, etc.

The light on my samsung 793MB monitor keeps blinking and nother apears on the screen. I tried using a different monitor with this computer and it still dosnt work. I also tried a different video card and still light keeps blinking and nothing appears on the screen. I suspect it is ethier the cpu or the motherboard but I have no way of know unless i go to compusa/bestbuy ect, and pay them $100.
The computer was custom built by me last year and just stopped working. There were no recent hardware or software changes. Please help ive been trying to figure it out for over 2 months and almost forgot all the fans and lights and hard drive and drives are running.

Specs:
Intel 3.4ghz
Samsung 793MB(17 inch)
Ati 700X graphics
D925XCV (motherboard)
Lite on Cd/Dvd write/rewrite
Enermax 470 watts power supply
2 gb of ram
80gb western digital hard drive(caviar edition)
and that all thats important

Answer:Green Light On Monitor Keeps Blinking

if you are getting no output onto monitors there are only two troubleshooting sources left:

1. you have a bad/loose cable

2. your video card is messed up.

Since you have isolated the monitor as not being a problem, the error is either in your cable or video card.

swap out with another video card to see if that is the problem

I am working on a frends desktop that recently might have been hit by lightning. After a big storm their desktop would no longer power on. Now, I am no stranger to computers. I unplugged the motherboard main connector and I get a solid green light when I plug the psu in. Plug the main connector back in and plug the psu in I get blinking light again. So either its the PSU or mainboard. Im thinking psu since usually that is what goes first, but at the same time I am leaning towards mainboard. what do you all think? On another note, Are these boards proprietary? I have a few standard ATX PSUs I could test my theory with but not if I have to rewire them.

Hi folks, having a problem here. I have the motherboard in the title and just yesterday after shutting down and replacing a fan, my computer will no longer turn on through the case power button. I thought it might be the case wiring that is shot, but I tried booting the system by doing the "screwdriver to the power pins" trick. I dont even get a reaction at all. I have taken all the parts off and put them back together, but still the same. So... did my motherboard randomly fry from just replacing a fan.. (maybe dust?) I'm not sure. I just need some assurance on if it is the motherboard so I can get a new one. I dont have any other computers at the moment to check the parts. Thanks guys, and please try to be swift.

Hello, I'm trying to figure out if the power supply on my hp is bad or not. The green light on back of the tower is flashing and the computer won't turn on. I've tried all of the preliminary things and nothing works -- the green light keeps blinking until I disconnect the large plug to the motherboard, then the light stays on and doesn't blink. Once I have the power cord disconnected and the main plug to the motherboard disconnected as well, I then have tried replugging the power cord and then replugging the main plug to the motherboard (kind of trying to jump start it), the fan tries to come one (but only for a second, then goes back off, so it won't boot).Does anyone know if this means that the power supply is bad or if something else might be wrong? I'm wondering if the power supply would be bad when the computer is clearly trying to start, but not quite making it.

Answer:no power and green light on my hp pavilion is flashing

If the PSU blinks it needs to be reset.unplug the electrical cable from the wall and the PSU.move the red voltage selector to the opposite position it is in and then slide it back. If you live in the USA 120Vac-->220Vac-->120Vac see the image below.  After you have done this you can plug the power cable back into the PSU.  Connect the power cable to the wall power. If the PSU is still serviceable it will no longer be blinking. Best regards, erico Edited to fix the broken image link.

Hi
My PC wouldn't turn on on Monday night - just a green flashing light on the front. After a bid of fiddling with the kettle lead etc and moving the pc, it worked. After switching off as usual the same thing happened the next night. I replaced the kettle lead but now it just sits with the green light flashing. I've checked the forums but can't find someone with the same problem in that the pc DOES work every now and again. PC about 15 months old. Has anyone any suggestions (hoping its not the hard drive).

HELP PLEASE!!I am trying to figure out what is wrong with a friends computer. The computer, which was purchased on HSN and says "Systemax Ascent" and runs windows ME, was running properly about 2 weeks ago and when he attempted to boot up again, it had no picture on the monitor, just a blank screen with the green power light blinking. I thought maybe it was the monitor so I brought it to my house and tried it on my monitor which works but it did the same thing. I also noticed that his CD Rom drive doesn't work either which he says was also working before. I took the CD drive out of mine and put it in his and it works fine. This started about 10 days ago. When I shut down, a few seconds after the monitor goes dark, there's a small light in the center of the monitor. It only lasts a second or two. At first, it always was blue--like a flashlight beam off to one side. Then it was red, in the same shape. Today, it's red, shaped like an arc with a green tail.

I'm not having any problems with the computer. But there's one other change. Beginning yesterday, when I turn the computer on the desktop icons don't all pop up fully formed. Some begin as outlines, and then fill in.

Any explanations of these changes will be appreciated. Thank you.

ubearcat,The led error represents ACPI S3 Suspend to RAM Windows Standby State. Try the steps below to resolve.Changing the power management options in the operating systemSometimes just changing the software settings in the operating system power options will fix the issue. Access to the power options in Windows can be done through the Control Panel. Depending on your version and view by settings, you may or may not see a power option link. In that case, look for power options under the hardware category. Once there, create a new plan or modify an existing plan, changing the advanced settings as needed. If changing the operating systems power options does not fix the problem, you can try changing the APCI setting to the computers Basic Input/Output System (BIOS).  Once there, you need to look for Power Management Options. There you will find the different ACPI standby states.

P4 3.0 ghz
ASUS P4P800-VM
480w psu
1 stick MD4412UOE 512MB DDR-400 PC3200 Power Memory
Integrated Intel Extreme Graphics

I purchased all of my parts from newegg, and i finally found the proper time to put everything together. After getting a cpu fan that was too big, i purchased a AeroCool cpu fan. I had to remove the P4 retention module, and I now have the fan installed. I installed everything else (cd-rom, hdd, disk drive), and I turn the power on, to find that nothing is happening. I have taken the mobo out of the case to make sure it isnt grounded, and none of the fans power up. The only indication of power I get is the green stand-by light located between the second and third pci slots, and the keyboard lights flash on, then off. Whenever I turn the power switch on, the same thing happens with the keyboard and the rest of the mobo.
I have a buddy who is also putting together his own build, and he said that it was strange to hear that not even the psu fan is starting up. The psu has two power receptables, that I can best describe as female and male. Dont know if this makes any difference. I dont know what to do, and I was wondering if this sounds even remotely familiar to anyone. Am I missing something with some of the jumper settings, or does it sound like a huge problem?

Thanks again in advance for any help, and I'm glad I found my way to this ... Read more

Hello,

I am having quite a problem with my computer:

After a while of idling, or in the middle of a game, the screen will go black, but the light on the monitor stays green, indicating there still is a signal.. i think. This is on my 21' CRT. So i tried another monitor, an LCD , while this is happening (the green light no picture business), and i get the message 'Mode not supported'. I see the video card fan is still going, and I'm really not sure what is wrong.

Also, sometimes when i try to turn the computer on it won't react... but a few mins later as if by magic it turns on by itself.

If you could help me out that would be most excellent, the computer i am on now has Intel Extreme Graphics 2 onboard video, and it is painful to play any decent game on it.

Thanks in advance!

Answer:Screen going black - Light on Monitor stays Green

Sounds like your video card is going out, or not getting enough power. Check your PSU, maybe try reinstalling the video card drivers.

I had a simular problem, my monitor would go blank on about the 3rd 3d Mark test, then several minutes later my score would pop up on the screen and I could see my desktop. Got a new GPU, everything is working fine.

Good luck, hopefully someone else will have some more infor for you.

The monitor (Samsung 2693HM) is on, everything looks great. Never goes off, never blinks, no problems. The blue power LED is on, but blinks off, then back on, every 5 secs. I hit the power button on the monitor and nothing happens. None of the buttons work on the monitor. I just bought this about a week ago...whats going on?

Answer:Power LED on monitor on, but blinks off/on every 5 seconds

Usually when a situation like this occurs, the monitor is not receiving a signal from the PC.
Double check your connections, since it's only been a week, maybe take it back to the store and have them check it unless you can check it on a different system.

My sister-in-law has an eMachine that she turned off and unplugged before leaving for vacation. A week later she returned and plugged it back in only to find it won't turn on. I don't know much about this pc other than it's a tower and about 3 or so years old. I figured it was probably the PSU (power supply) but wanted to verify as many things as possible. Basically, there is a green light on the back of the pc (on the PSU) that will flashes on and off when you try to turn on the computer. The PSU fan doesn't spin and nothing else makes any attempt to turn...just dead.

I pulled all the power connectors and jumpered the power switch pins (15-16), this gave me a solid green light on the PSU and the fan spun normally. I tested with a voltmeter and got the proper voltage on all the pins. I am thinking that this probably rules out the PSU but not 100% as something could be 'pulling it down'???

Any ideas on what else to look at? I hate to buy a PSU when it appears this one is ok. That pretty much leaves the MoBo and/or CPU. I've pulled all the cards and memory trying to get it to do anything and nothing affects it. I suspect there is something wrong with the MoBo but don't know how to verify that.

Any help or advice is appreciated. Thanks!

We bought around 40 of these X220 I5 before xmas and now more than 20 of them have failed. The company we bought them from tried everything but they ended up switching the mainboard on the first two that failed. We were told it was a batch issue with the serial number R9-HNXXX and now all of those are changed into T420. But today we had the same problem with serial number R9-HXXXX that was bought two weeks earlier and with different config - I7 and SSD. All of them with the same problem that is described in subject. Are there any known batch issues? The problem is not with the tablet version and sorry for posting in the wrong forum. Thx

Answer:X220 - no post and green light around power button flashes every 3 - 4 second

I was preparing a X220 for a VP in my office and i left on vacation. When i came back, the laptop was dead and i can't power it on. I unplugged the AC and removed the battery and waited a bit, plugged everything in again and still the same thing. The battery LED blinks 3 times then nada. (no fans, nothing) I tried a little trick from the S model, removed AC and battery and pressed power button for 30secs and re-plugged everything but it didn't work. Anyone have any ideas?

That says it all - your hard disk drive is failing (S.M.A.R.T. = Self-Monitoring Analysis Reporting Technology).

Hi,

I am new to this excellent forum and wondered if anyone out there could possibly help......

I have a Dell Optiplex GX620 Desktop PC. Several weeks ago I had a slow flashing amber power light, indicating a PSU or switch fault. Firstly I replaced the switch - made no difference. Then I replaced the PSU - The slow flsahing amber light has now changed to a blinking (very fast) GREEN light on the power button.

All of my research so far has suggested that this suggests the PC is in standby mode! But the PC isn't even switched on - no fans running etc. In desperation I have even plugged a USB mouse in to see if I can "wake" it up! I have a amber AUX_PWR light on the Motherboard which is on.

Nothing happens when I press the power button - no matter for how long I press it in!

Has anyone got any ideas?

Many Thanks in advance

Welcome to Tech-Forums, lardy2001!!

Do diagnostic lights display anything? It's those 4 lights I believe that's located at the back of the computer.

Dear sir/mam ,

And LG 17 inch monitor , Now even i am not able to install windows 7 because when i try to install windows7 (press any key to boot from CD/DVD) monitor goes blank with green light blinking continuesly. Same problem occurred with winxp sp3 even though there is no such problem in winxp sp2 or lower versions of winxp. Plz help me as soon as possible.....

Answer:my monitor goes blank with green light blinking continuesly when i restart with win7

Try the monitor with another system.

What video card do you have? You mention XP SP2 & earlier XP versions work OK. How old is the video card?

- Reseat video card
- Make sure video cable is good
- Swap out video card; try another

I have a new problem. My monitor has begun to blink repeatedly after coming out of power saving mode (when the screen turns off automatically due to inactivity).

I have no problems with this in that past. This problem just started out of the blue a few days ago. Initially, it would just blink once or twice coming out of power saving mode, now it might blink 10 or more times before the monitor stays on. Once the monitor is on, it functions fine. The blinking only occurs after coming out of power saving mode.

Answer:Monitor blinks repeatedly coming out of power saving.

Hey there, CSSteve.

Have you recently altered your screen's resolution? Often this can be the issue when it comes to blinking. I'd suggest booting in Safe Mode and adjusting the resolution back to the default or other appropriate resolution. Let me know how this goes. Good luck.

I have a T7500, was working perfectly until I I upgraded the CPU`s to hex core, when I try to boot, it does not get past the error. The Power Light is solid green, and lights 3 and 4 are solid, this is not a fault code listed in the manual, and have found nothing online to help. I have removed all but 2 sticks of memory and checked the pins on the CPU riser, all seem to be fine. And system works when riser is removed. Does anyone have any clues or fixes that might help me with this.
Many Thanks

No green light on MB. Sys will not BOOT at all. I had to do a HARD shutdown because of a freeze-up and Cont/Alt/Del would not work. Afterwards, computer would not boot at all. No GREEN light on Mobo. Sent board to Gigabyte and about five weeks later they sent what looked like a brand new Mobo back to me without ANY type of explanation. Installed everything as usual; still NO boot nor any GREEN light on Mobo. Tried brand new Antec PS and still NO BOOT and still the green light on the Mobo will not light up. Nothing, Nil, Nada, HELP, HELP, HELP I am running Windows XP Pro, Gigabyte MA790XT-UD4P MoBo, NOW a brand new Antec 650 Watt Power supply <<< replaced the older one after I thought it had possibly burned out. Two Seagate 750 Gigabyte Hard Drives, and 4gigabytes of Ram.

Answer:System will not boot, no green light on mobo.

Disconnect all drives and try booting again. All that is needed to POST (boot) is the following hardware: Motherboard, CPU w/HS/fan, 1 stick of RAM, power supply, graphics card or on board, monitor, keyboard. No other cards, RAM, mouse, cabling, etc. Only connect the power supply to the motherboard. Main 24 pin connector, auxiliary CPU power connector, any power connectors required on a graphics card. Be sure the CPU fan is connected to that header. Momentarily touch the 2 start button motherboard pins with a screwdriver to start the system. Unplug to stop. You may have something like a dead hard drive that is stopping the system from booting.Did you clean off the thermal material on the CPU and then apply new thermal paste according to directions for your processor?

Hi,

I am kind of new to computer Assembly.
This was my second one.

I assembled the following config system yesterday.

- VisionTek XTASY VTK9600XT256 Radeon 9600XT 256MB 128-bit DDR AGP 4X/8X Video Card - Retail
- Pentium 3.2Ghz HT
- 512*2MB PNY RAM
- Creative Audigy2
- ECS 848P-A V2.0 Socket 478 Intel 848P ATX Intel Motherboard

When I connect everything perfectly, I connect my monitor to the Video Card (installed in the AGP Slot).

and when I boot up, everything looks to be just fine (with all fans working .. even the Graphics card), but I don't see anything on my monitor.
Its power Indicator just blinks..

what does this mean?

is the Graphics card not working? The monitor works as I have tried it on my laptop.can anybody suggest me how to trouble shoot from here?

Answer:New installation ... monitor does not show output..power indicator just blinks

Have you tried plugging the monitor into the onboard video. If it works you will need to let bios know you have an agp card or make a jumper setting on the motherboard. If it does not work reseat the video card and try again. If that does not work, borrow another known working video card to see if that works. Hope this helps.

Hello,
Was experiencing general issues with my windows profile after windows updates last patch Tuesday so I initiated a system restore and let it run today.  After completion laptop turned off (instead of rebooting?)

Pressing the power button: Power button turns white (on) for ~30 seconds, then laptop turns off (indicated by power button light)
no fans
no screen (back-light or otherwise)
no POST codes - beep codes or light codes.
no other visible activity

During that period nothing else happens, unless I press the power button again. If I do this
The fans spin up momentarily
The system then powers off (as indicated by the white power light)

I've tried:

Disconnect power/battery and hold power button (60 seconds)
Power system on with just battery
Power system on with just wall power
Remove mSATA HD and repeat the above
Disconnect video connector and repeat above
Remove mPCI WiFi module and repeat above
Completely disassemble and remove CMOS battery (tested at 3.1 VDC) for 60 seconds, reassemble and repeat above

All with no change in behavior

I am able to get a light code 2 Amber / 3 White if I remove the RAM module (as expected)
D + PWR diagnostics cycle successfully through a range of colors then nothing

Laptop is 2 months out of warranty.  Any help debugging the issue is appreciated!

Hi Wacky78900,

Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums!

I?m sorry to hear that your Y500 Laptop is not turning ON after playing game and turning OFF manually, I suggest you to perform the Flee-Power and check the issue. Below are the steps to check and resolve the issue:

Remove the battery and any other peripheral device connected to the computer.
Hold the power button for 10-15 seconds and then connect only the AC Adapter and try to turn ON the computer.

If the issue persists even after performing the Flee-Power and as the computer is in warranty, I would Strongly Suggest Calling Technical Support for Assistance. Click here to open a link where you can select the country and get the exact contact support number. I?m sure they will be a great help.

Do post us back for further queries.

Best Regards

Hello,

Spec:
MB - ASUS P5B LGA 775 Intel P965 Express ATX Intel
CPU - Intel e4400 Dual Core

Computer been running rock solid for 2 years. I didn't do any changes. One morning I boot it, front green light flashing together with red. Removed everything and I realized issue is between the MB and CPU. When I remove the CPU cover the PC has no green light, solid red, but when I put the cover on the green light flashes insteed of being solid green. This is very sensitive area it seems. I managed to put some weight on the cpu with a screwdriver tring to get a solid green, but this lasted only for few almost a min, then resets and trys to reboot again.

What could be causing this flashing green light rather than solid on front case? It's not the PSU since I tested it with another one. Also If I put the GPU I can hear unstable fan noise. Its like its struggling.

Other things to add. Thermal paste could've damaged the CPU or the pressure from the cpu cooler that I tightened maeby way too strong months ago. I am 100% I can't do anything to fix this. I know Il have ro replace one piece. Problem is Im not certain which one and no way I can find out...
