Preferred Solution: Dos command to compare file creation date and modified date

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

This happens to the Winodws XP Explorer.

Would people out there please explain it to me. And also what I wish to see is the downloaded file creation date which should be identical to the one kept by the hosting web site. Or maybe other ways around

Answer:Why can Last Modified Date and Creation Date be the same

If I understand what your asking:

Quote:

Why can Last Modified Date and Creation Date be the same

They would be the same, for example. You draw a picture in paint, save it and dont edit it again. When you save it you create the file, and seeing you dont edit it the modfication date and the creation date will be the same.

And also what I wish to see is the downloaded file creation date which should be identical to the one kept by the hosting web site.

I am not sure if that is possible.

Help! I am using a Seagate Central 4TB NAS drive attached to my router via Ethernet. It has been working fine so far for all kinds of file activities. But whenever I modify a file in one of its folders, the creation date for the file also updates and is
changed to the same time as the new modified date.
Maybe relevant details:
I can move/copy folders to the drive and they maintain their created dates.
It happens for both a private user share on the NAS and for the Public share on it.
It happens for at least image files and text files.
I am able to edit files across two computers on the network just fine, the create date stays the same.
This happens from a new Windows 10 machine and Vista machine both.
I notice sometimes the date created seems to stay same until I access the file the next time.
I can't update the NAS firmware because of error.

If it could be a permissions problem, I have been unable to change it from:
Everyone: Special Permissions only
nobody (Unix Group\nobody): Special Permissions only
nogroup (Unix Group\nogroup): Special Permissions only
(Those were there automatically, they are not something I manually put there. I get "Access is denied" whenever try to add permissions or change ownership.)

I have Googled many phrases of this problem far and wide and come up with nothing. I really need to save the original create date because that's how I sort them in programs like Windows Photo Gallery or Picasa. Does anyone know what's goin... Read more

I have a folder of about 20,000 photos from a digicam that I'm organizing for a friend, since I'm rebuilding the system I couldn't bare the mess and had to tackle this too. I've gone through with software to remove the duplicates but now I want to put them into folders labeled by their date created, or date modified. Is there a command for this? Or even a prog.

Answer:Command to sort 20k photos into date modified albums?

I use ThumbsPlus to organize my photos. It has an auto rename feature, so you could sort by date and then rename by year/month or whatever, but it's notsuper automated - you would basically need to rename each months worth of files, which may or may not be a lot of work.

It's not super cheap if all you want to do is rename some files, but I think it has a free 30 day trial.

The title is self-explanatory. So far, I found a software that is able to change this called 'Attribute Changer' but it only changes the date modified in the folder and, when you go into the actual word application > file > info, the date created and modified are not changed. All --

Please help with this question about file date-created VS date-modified in Windows 7.

Suppose a file is created at time1.

How come Windows7 reports "date created" as "time1" and "date modified" as "time2" where "time2" is a time earlier than time1?

See the attached file, "WindowsDateIssue201203061503.png", for an example.

Thanks.

Answer:file date-created VS date-modified where modified < created

If you (/your computer) have not played with system time:

That means that file is a copy of a file created earlier.

To confirm, find an old file and copy it to another folder/disc.
Check the dates.

This situation can also occur with some archives (depending on your settings).

Answer:date-created VS date-modified on Windows 7

Good question, but it does not effect the performance of the computer.
An explanation could be the DLL file could be updated via a recent Windows update and it was last modified date was inherited from the previous file that has been overwritten.

"date modified" field does not update when files are replaced in a zip folder while running Windows 7 64-bit.

Data files are stored in zip files and utilized daily. At the days end the files are replaced with the most current revision. The updated file displays the correct "date modified", however when the filed is transfered into the zip file, the "date modified" displayed within the zip file does not update.

I don't have this problem with Windows XP or 2000. Is there some hidden setting that is needed for Windows 7 to recognize file modification dates just as every version prior?

It becomes frustrating that Microsoft continues to add nice new fancy operating features, but yet continuously fails to ensure the basic functions are maintained.

Answer:Windows 7 zip file date modified

You must be seeing things because it updates the modified time just fine.

This question pertains specifically to a video that is being downloaded.

What is being done to the video in order for the file modified date to change?

From other forums ive gathered that it might be Windows Media player modifying some meta data automatically.

Does this modification happen to files that have previously been played in Windows Media Player?

Or can you have video files anywhere on your computer and WMP will modify the video file at least once after the original download occured(Even if you haven't
viewed this video yet)?

I am trying to see if this information can tell me if someone has viewed the videos that have been downloaded or not.

I have 4 videos downloaded from within 15 minutes of each other. Each of the 4 videos have the modification time the same or 1 second difference.  So
it does seem to be something WMP is automatically modifying something.  So if anyone could shed some light onto the process that would be great.

The format for all the videos that have a modified date after a created date are, .wmv , .mpg , .mp4 , .vk.flv , .flv .

Any Information or feedback would be greatly appreciated

My XP Pro has recently stopped updating the modified date / time to reflect when I modify a file.

The problem relates to the application that updates the files and not the file themselves. E.g.:

MS Notepad, Word, Excel, Outlook, Microangelo, Photoshop, Winmerge - all update the Modified field as expecetd.

MS Wordpad, EditPlus, TopStyle, Notepad++, FastStone Image Viewer - all do *not* update the Modified field.

I tried ending all non-critical tasks, but problem persists.

The problem does not appear when running in Safe Mode.

I've used system restore to go back as far as I can but no fix there. I can't find any reference to the problem on the web.

Any suggestions very gratefully received.

I am using Word 2007. Each time I open a .doc or .docx file, the date modified changes, as displayed in Windows Explorer. This happens when I just choose file open, and then exit, without ever doing anything with the file.

Previous versions of Word would appear to do the same thing. However, when the file was closed, the date modified in windows explorer to revert back to the previous date. Word 2007 causes the current date accessed to become the date modified.

This makes it very confusing, as it looks as though I am making changes to the file, when I am not.

Help appreciated...marty

I noticed that the "date modified" on the recovery file in the Recovery d: drive is the date I last had problems and did a recovery install.  Is this field supposed to update to the date of last recovery?  I am just wondering whether that date modified might indicate that it was modified with virus/malware so that recovering would not result in a clean install.  Thank you!

Hi. I need help creating a .bat file that compares 2 same file on 2 different computers (server and client) on a LAN network..
It compares the same file on a server cpu, and there are 4 possible conditions i think:
- Same date on server > then do no action
- Older date on server> no action
- Newer date on server> action, sync using goodsync command line (i'll work on this)
- Connection with the server down > no action
So it's like this :
abc.txt on client 11/01/12
abc.txt on server 12/01/12

then sync

My question is, how exactly do i compare file on a LAN network?
thanks

Answer:Need help creating a batch file based on last modified date..

Welcome to TSG denywinarto. Hope you find some help here and take the opportunity to help others!

I quit doing Batch files a while back an went to vbs because it seems more robust. That said there is a vbs script in this thread (post #3) that you point at a directory and it makes a text file of file information including modified date and the full path to the file.

If you run this against your two folders (producing the two text file) then write a process that compares the two files and moves data according to your desires. You can do the file move and compare in vbs and not have to worry about the goodysnc piece.

Here is the question posed to me by a friend:

"One more odd-ball question? if you click on the time in the bottom right hand corner of my office computer, it has the correct time and date. However, when I save new files and look at the date (or transfer to FTP), it says June 2099! I wouldn?t think of it being a huge problem except when I try and back-up files on my computer to CD, it won?t save these because it doesn?t recognize the date. I tried google searching the problem and couldn?t find anything. Ever heard of anything like this?"

When moving a file to an SD Card through the card reader the Date Modified is resetting.
Any idea why?

Answer:when moving file to SD card date modified resets

To me, this is normal.

When you 'move' or 'copy' file to a new location, the date reset itself.
This could mean that this is new file on this new location, so a new date/time.

When using Windows Explorer, a directory listing can show a number of different columns of course but it appears the default is Date Modified .. which is fine. However, it doesn't show "seconds". The same appears to be the case for the command line output for "dir".
The only solution I've found so far is to put the directory path in Google Chrome - which is a bit of a pain but it does work. So the information *is there*.

How to get Windows Explorer to display the time with seconds?

Answer:Display file date modified time including seconds.

Try this:

Change the dddd setting to ddd manually

Apply and OK your way out

The file system does not maintain any kind of history of date changes. Once the creation date (or any other data) has been changed the original date is lost.

Hello, I'm trying to write a batch file (an additional to the users logon script) to find the modified date of a file, then find the difference between todays date and if the difference is greater than 100 days run a certain piece of software. I'm sure this is fairly easy, but I'm pretty new to batch files. All I've managed to do so far is to output todays date to a text file. I think you can get the creation date using the "DIR filename", but this will need to be trimmed and I'm not sure how to do that in batch files. Any help would be much appreciatedThanks for your help

Answer:Batch to look at file creation date

There are three dir switches available for dates:/ta - date accessed/tc - date created/tw- date writtenCalculations in batch files can be done with the set /a statement. That  said, date calculations are cumbersome and usually involve a long series of hardcoded IF statements.A better tool would be Windows Scripting (free and installed on Windows machines since Win95C) which has built in date functions for just the purpose you need.http://www.microsoft.com/technet/scriptcenter/default.mspxGood luck.

Answer:changing file creation date

Hi Chas9 !

If you're talking about a date that appears at the bottom of the image then there's nothing you can do, it's part of the image.

If you wish to change the file attribute then there are many freewares on the internet that can do that. A google search found this freeware which should do the trick :
http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/filedatech.html

Else Total Commander (fully fonctionnal 30 days shareware) has many other uses but can do just what you want. Select your files with right-click (or press + then type *.jpg if these are all .jpg files) then go to files => change attributes.

The Windows Live Mail *.eml files time stamp is getting changed to the current date when the file is selected in the Windows Explorer! I save backup copies of important E-mails to folders on the Hard Drive and then synchronize them with the same folders on other LAN Hard Drives for backup archives. When these E-mail files are selected or opened from the Windows Explorer in the Windows 7 OPS the Modified Date Time Stamp is changed to the current date automatically! This action creates a real problem when doing later synchronizations of all of the folders! The date will not be the original date of the E-mail and the original file will be over copied with the file with the newest date stamp. I stopped Indexing on the *.eml files and that stopped the time stamp change when overcopy synchronization, but if the file is selected during a viewing in Windows Explorer then the Time Stamp is updated to the current date again! A solution to this problem would be greatly appreciated if anybody knows of one. Thanks - - - Shorto

Answer:*.eml Time Stamp - Select File in Windows Explorer Changes the Modified Date

The Date and Timestamp changing issue in Windows 7 has a two part fix!
1. Disable the Indexing of the *.eml file type in the Indexing Options located by Clicking on "Control Panel" -  "Indexing Options" - Advanced Button - File Types Tab - scroll down to the .eml file type and uncheck the Box then click OK to finish, so
that the Email type of files won't be Indexed.
2. Delete the Registry Entry listed below, be sure to Export and Save the original Key so it could be Restored if something goes wrong!  \HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\PropertySystem\PropertyHandlers
 and Delete the .eml entry

That should fix the problem with the changing Date/Timestamp of Email Files. For more information read CarlS's WindowsSeven Fourm thread where I also have more input:

 http://www.sevenforums.com/browsers-mail/35334-eml-files-timestamps-updated-constantly.html

This should give you a better understanding on the problem and the Fix. - - - Shorto

Hi guys, I am new here and I would like to clarify a few things.

As the title suggested, is there a way to find the original creation date on a file which has been copied and pasted. Here were the steps I took.

1. Copied documents from PC to external hard drive
2. Deleted documents on PC.
3. Connected ext hd to my laptop and booted up the files
4. Right clicked properties to view the creation date, which shows the current date instead of the original date.

So from what I know, the "date created" is the date which I copied and pasted into the external hard drive, right?

Is there a way to find out the ORIGINAL date created from my laptop? I have since deleted the orignal document from my PC.

Many thanks in advance.

Answer:How do I find the original date creation on a file?

Hello, if I understand your question correctly, date created is when the file was moved. Odd, however I just tried it myself on my own two partitions. Date modified is when the file was modified/made(assuming no other modifications to the file were made.)

I am in the process of scanning in numerous old photographs and I thought it would be an idea to change the file creation date to the date on which (approx) the photograph was taken. I am using ninotech dateedit for this. It works fine. If I right-click a file and look at its properties it gives the new creation date. However, on adding the date created column to details view in explorer it seems that any date prior to about 1980 is simply shown as blank. Can this be altered or is it a feature of explorer?

I have tried a few replacements for windows explorer and so far they all appear to have the same behaviour which suggests it is linked into the OS.

Any help greatly appreciated.

Answer:File creation date not showing in explorer

If I remember correctly, the earliest date that a PC can deal with is Jan 4th 1980 - as there was no need to have date capacity before this point

I don't think you'll be able to get around this, so it might be better to watermark the images with the date you need

I think what happened. Sunday night began a manual backup by trying to select entire My Docs and copy to laptop DVD R/W drive disk. Computer said it would take 2 days so 35 mins in I cancelled. It said there was a large set of temp files and I could retain or remove, I removed.

Went to bed.

Next day 11:04 am ran a malware prgm called CacheCleaner. Have run it 1000+ times and no issue this time.

Few days later go to access Quicken - no can do. File is damaged. Went to open my budget file in excel, says" file is in a different format than specified by the file extension. ..." Open it anyways, its completely empty. Go to open a MS word doc, cannot open, says there are problems with the contents. PDF problems too.

Every file has been mysteriously updated Date Modified to 1/4/2010 11:04am. None will open. Any file not dated 1/4/2010 11:04am opens fine.

Was there some temp pointer type file created during my aborted backup operation that was then deleted when I emptied my temp files etc when I ran Cache Cleaner.
This is horribly impactful b/c my last backup is old. Please help if you can.....

Hi
Apologies for the title - I tried to encompass my problem.

Basically, it's this:

I have a drive that I need to copy all the data from and move to a larger drive (1TB DAS moved to a 6TB NAS device). I need to preserve the folder's date created and (if possible) modified attributes, as the data being copied is a WIP folder for a big CGI
project, and it's important to be able to track and find specific info/folders via date created... essentially the job is ongoing for another 6/7 months.

So, normal copy/paste won't do... thanks to this forum :) I've used Xcopy and worked out how to migrate the data and keep the all the new/copy folder's date created and modified attributes in line with the original/source.

Meaning I can make a perfect copy with folder dates that match.

However (and this is where I am head scratching), as soon as any new data is added into the copy folder, it's attributes change... not only the folder's modified date (which I was expecting) but also the date created folder.

This is a problem as the folders will have new data added to them on an ongoing basis... but, as both modified and created dates change to the time the new file is added, it causes issues when finding specific nested folders via creation date.

Example: Copy folder (done today via Xcopy) shows creation and modified date as per the source of 11/12/2012. As soon as any file is added into that folder, it updates modified and creation to the time the file w... Read more

Answer:How to maintain Folder attributes (date created/modified) on a 'Copy' - when a new file is added

BTW - with the Xcopy, it was a 2 stage process. /s/e/k first then a copy over but using /d/t/e/k. Copying in the first pass and then overwriting the folders in the second pass (with the correct creation date).

Thanks for the Robocopy/mir tip... that will work for bulk copying the data... sadly, when it's on the NAS, any additions to the folder change the creation date. Pretty sure it's the NAS file system (or lack of compatibility).

Going to test some spurious data using some other DAS drives - as I think it's the NAS (as per Lacie's reply).

Now I need to find a NAS that'll handle NTFS.

But at least I feel I'm getting somewhere now - thanks :)

Answer:Copy/Move File from One Disk To Another w/o Changing the File Creation Date

You can use a utility called "Set File Date" to change a file's creation date to whatever you want.

Something I discovered tonight...let me explain by example:

I have two files in folder AAA. One is named BBB, with a creation date of 1-1-14. One is named CCC, with a creation date of 8-1-14.

If I delete BBB, and then rename CCC to BBB, then that file's creation date changes from 8-1-14 to 1-1-14, even though the content stays the same as when it was actually created on 8-1-14.

Is this normal? If so, I’ve never noticed before. Also, if it’s normal, what do you think the rationale is, and does this differ from XP? For my purposes this is a useful -- if unexpected -- behavior (I won’t go into *why* I like it unless someone asks).

Thanks.

Answer:File Creation Date Oddity? Or Normal Behavior?

Can't reproduce this on my computer. AFAIK rename operations will not change either creation date or modify date.

Searching for files modified in a specified date range (of the past 3 days) gets a search result list titled "date modified", and with the column heading "Date Modified" but the date listed against a file modified today is wrong. The date displayed matches the file creation date & is within the specified range ... but how do I know what the Search is doing?

Every disk and/ or folder when I tick sort by name-ascending the damn thing reverts to date modified-descending if I leave said disk or folder and return. I tried "Enable_Auto_Arrange_in_File_Explorer.bat" and "Reset_Folder_View_Settings_of_All_Folders_to_Default.bat" courtesy of Brink to no avail.

Is there a way to get file explorer back to default sort (by name-ascending) for all disks, folders and sub-folders at once?

It was all fine last week and I've no recollection of playing with any settings. Very frustrating.

In Windows 7, there is a wider selection of date attributes, and one of them contains an [b]original[/b] set of the creation date, unlike just the "creation date" which is changed i.e when you copy a file. This field is just listed as "Date" in Win7.Now what I want to know is... How do I synchronize those two date fields? I have a hellstorm of old recovered files that I got back long ago, and their creation date got overwritten in the process. There's a lot of date changer tools, but I haven't seen one which can process the "Date" timefield, that appears in Win7.It would be neat to be able to synchronize the regular date attributes with this one.Check this image for an example of what I mean:http://www.sevenforums.com/attachme...

Answer:Date vs. Creation date

I am not at a W7 but from that it seems to say date is today's date. Robocopy and the replacement for it may be used to copy off files base on a more advanced search. Hang up and live.

Hi,

I have an issue with the creation/time taken of a particular photo.

On the 13th of October, I took a photo with my mobile at 17:23. When I placed this photo on my computer, the date & time taken, date & time created and date & time modified were all the same and correct, as 13th October 17:23.

Now, on the 1st of November I transferred this photo again from my mobile to my computer and the time created changed to 18:23. (on October 31st we changed to winter hour, and we've set our clock to -1hr).

Can anyone tell me what is going on/wrong and how I can transfer this photo again and get the real values for the date & time taken, date & time created and date & time modified and make sure that they all match the timestamp 13th October 17:23?

Thanks!

:(I have recently converted several thousand Lotus Wordpro files to MS Word, leaving the new files with a current date. I need to redate them to the same modified date as the old files. Answer:command script for batch copying file date stamp

Back in the old days, there was a command line utility called TOUCH that would work. The new and improved version runs under windows and is interactive. If you have an old copy of TOUCH you could incorporate it into a script. The fact that you need to recover the original DateModified field only adds to the complexity. Scripts can only see DateModified as a read-only property. Let us know if you have the batch version of TOUCH.

Some of those files were last modified over a year ago, and others were last modified only a day ago. When I then use cabarc.exe to extract the files, I've noticed that the "Date Last Modified" property of the files created recently has changed by only one or two seconds. Hi! First off, I kinda suck with computers, so I'm sorry if I make this more difficult than it should be. Also, this is kind of a silly question.
When I used to download images, my computer would automatically add a 'date modified' thingy to it, so that I could sort through them easily by setting the folder to be arranged by the date I saved it. But it suddenly stopped adding the date modified- or any other properties- to anything I right-click-save, so that I have to search through my (admittedly large) folder and manually add the date. Is there any way I could set it back to automatically doing this? Thanks!

Answer:Won't automatically add 'Date modified' to downloads

Welcome to Seven Forums narwhalsmash. Try this.

File and Folder Arrangement - Group by - Sort by - Arrange by

Open a folder with the images> Right click a blank area and chose Sort by> Scroll down to More at the bottom> Scroll down to Date modified and put a check mark next to it> Now click on the Date modified text itself and on the right side, Move up should now be clickable> Click on Move up

This will move Date modified to the top of the list. See if your old behavior is now back.

Hi,

I would like to create some kind of batching script that replaces the date modified of many folders with their date created, any advice on what I should use to do this? I'm thinking JScript might do it, but I've not used that before, and not sure how to go about setting up to use it, or if it really is suitable.

The reason for this request, we have a media server shared on a local network, specifically an "incoming" folder that needs to be write enabled. When some users browse to folders inside incoming they create a thumbs.db file, which touches the containing folder's modified date. We could (and have) gotten those users to turn off that setting, but it only takes one person to mess it up, and has become a recurring problem over the years. Unfortunately, some other devices on the network (eg iPads) can not sort folders by date created, only date modified, so I would like to reset the folder dates automatically.

Any advice would be appreciated, thanks.

edit, after a bit more googling, it looks like powershell is the right tool for something like this, yes?

I am using a program that OCR's a page and then creates a folder for it inside an output folder...
Goes like this:
Input folder -> OCR program -> Output folder -> [Folder just for that document]

I keep the output folder open so that i can see the new folders being created for the OCR records, which i can then drag additional files to that records folder.
Since im dealing with thousands of folders im depending on vista to sort by date modified so that the newest one shows up on top.... But im running into a problem

I've done about 700 records now (700 folders have been created) and for some reason the date modified stopped working. Now the new folder is showing up at the end instead of the beginning. If i hit F5 to refresh the window it move to the top where it should be.... but im going through thousands of records and hitting F5 for every record consumes time and makes room for error.

Why did vista stop sorting by date modified? I didnt change anything, all of the sudden it just stopped being consistent. I can restart the computer and sometimes it will start working properly again for about 30 records, but its not guaranteee.

Please help me fix this, THANKS!

Ok, I tried IE7 for the first time recently and found a horrible bug that I can't find a reasonable solution to.

It has something to with IE7 (and IE8) updating the URLs "date modified" time stamp if the URL has a favicon.

Example :

goto this URL :

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Microsoft

Drag the URL to your desktop or any folder. Note the date modified time stamp. A minute later, double click on the URL and let it open. Now look at the time stamp again. It will be automatically updated because this website has a favicon. IE7 will automatically update the date modified time stamp whether you want it to or not.

THIS IS A PAIN IN THE BEHIND if you have lots of URLs sorted by date modified.

The ONLY solution I have found is to change the properties of EVERY URL to "read only". This will prevent the time stamp from being overridden.

There has to be a better way than having to resort to this for every bookmark or URL.

This "feature" of IE7/IE8 really sucks and there should be an option to disable it.

Does anyone have any ideas?

Answer:IE7 / IE8 bookmark date modified bug - ANY IDEAS?

I'm using IE7 and it's not doing what you're saying. The date modified/created/accessed date stays the same every time I reopen it after dragging the link you posted above to the desktop. Are you sure it's not being updated by your anti-virus software?

If you have IE8 set to delete your history/flush the cache every time you exit, that might also be a problem if it has to retrieve the icon every time. Sounds like a KAC problem.

Hey, I don't really know how to describe this problem too well, but the gist of it is that on windows such as where I'm selecting a file to open, or where to save something I'm downloading, etc., XP sorts the files by their date modified, rather than by name. I don't believe I did anything to activate this, it kinda just came up out of nowhere. But it's getting really annoying. Does anyone know how to fix this? Thanks! :)

Please try the attached registry tweak as it should resolve the problem. All you need to do is unzip it then double click it to merge with your registry. You should notice the difference straight away but if not, try rebooting.

In Excel 2003, I am trying to get the date of a cell in Column R to update when I modify any cells in the row (columns A-Q). Right now I have put this code in the "View Code" option when I right click on the worksheet tab (from this forum):Private Sub Worksheet_Change(ByVal Target As Range)Range("R" & Target.Row) = DateEnd SubI then close the code popup window, save the design worksheet which appears and returned to my spreadsheet, test this and it doesn't work even though the code appears when right clicking the worksheet tab and then choosing view code. What am I doing incorrectly?

Answer:Show date last modified for any cells in row

It's not clear to me what sheet tab you are clicking on but any Worksheet event code has to be placed in the sheet module for the sheet (and every sheet) where you want this to happen.Worksheet event macros are not global, they are Worksheet specific. If you want the date to appear in Sheet1 Column R, then you need to right-click the Sheet1 tab and paste code into the pane that opens. The only other reason that I can think for the code not to work for you (it works for me) is if you have some code that has turned events off.If the line:Application.EnableEvents = Falsehas been run in any macro while the current Excel session is open, then no event code will fire since the execution of that line impacts the application, i.e. Excel.Quitting Excel and restarting it or running the following line will enable events again:Application.EnableEvents = TrueNote: if you have a Macro that runs the "False" line at Excel start-up, then even quitting and restarting Excel won't help since the code will disable events as soon as Excel starts.Click Here Before Posting Data or VBA Code ---> How To Post Data or Code.

Date and Time Stamp code is as followsSub CommandButton1_Click()Range("A" & Rows.Count).End(xlUp).Offset(1).Value = NowEnd Subthis code when assigned to a button of checkbox will enter a timestamp and date stamp starting at Cell A2 clicking it again puts one in Cell A3 and so on. The problem is, yes I can reference a specific cell but that means 5500+ specific codes and specific buttons. What I want to modify is to make this code reference an activecell so say I am clicked in Cell D22 and then Click date and timestamp button I want the date and timestamp to show in that cell.Anyone know how to modify this to make that work?

Answer:Date and timestamp code needs modified

First, please take a moment to click on the blue line at the bottom of this post and read the instructions on how to post VBA code in this forum so that it is easier for us to read.
Sub CommandButton1_Click()
Range("A" & Rows.Count).End(xlUp).Offset(1).Value = Now
End SubObviously a macro with a single line of code is not that hard to read, but longer macros benefit by having the indents retained when posted. As for your question, this syntax determines the next empty cell Column A:Range("A" & Rows.Count).End(xlUp).Offset(1)If you simply replace that with ActiveCell, the code will put the timestamp in the active cell.Sub CommandButton1_Click()
ActiveCell.Value = Now
End SubClick Here Before Posting Data or VBA Code ---> How To Post Data or Code.message edited by DerbyDad03

Whenever I open a folder and want to "sort by date (modified)", Windows 7 sorts by descending order. I have to click again to get ascending order (in XP this was not a problem). Is there a registry hack or some other way of getting Windows 7 to sort by (modified) date in ascending order when you click on "sort by date"? Various searches have only come up with bogus or obvious answers (e.g., click again to change order, "group by" (which doesn't maintain setting when reset to "sort by date"), etc.). Thanks for any "real" help.

Answer:sort by date (modified) ascending

Hi guys,

Something weird is happening. Some of my movie files (file type doesn't matter) became corrupted; when I play them in VLC they cause errors, they were just fine before and nothing has changed. I noticed in Explorer that these files have no Date Modified field, it's simply blank; I've never seen anything like that.

I did a chkdsk on the drive and see no errors. What could it be ?

Thanks.

Answer:Blank Date Modified Field ?

VLC should rebuild the Index, but that is a temporary fix. Depending on what format they are, there is "DIVFIX" and "Meteor MKV repair" you can try to run the faulty content through which of those is appropriate, you'll have to google it, cant remember the links.

We're performing a directory inventory at the office that requires us to get rid of any directory that hasn't had a file modified since 1/1/08. However, the date in the 'Date Modified' column will always stay the same as the day the folder was initially created. For example, if I made a folder named "Joe's Docs" on 01/02/07 but just added a file on 7/8/10, the 'Date Modified' on "Joe's Docs" will still read 01/02/07.

Is there a program out there that will change the date modified to the most recent file in all of the subfolders? The best way I can describe it is to draw a short diagram of the theoretical directories with their dates modified below them.

Code:
Joe's Docs
07/08/10
| |
| |
Folder A Folder B
07/08/10 03/05/08
| | |
| | |
File A File B File C
07/08/10 02/01/08 03/05/08

I recently tried to open a document and found that it was filled with symbols looking like a 'y'. I finally determined that I had a large number of similar documents (word, excell, jpegs, publisher files) that were all unreadable.

1. They were scattered in many folders adjacent to readable files.
2. All unreadable files had the modified date of 05/01/2007 3:35 am (any file with another date was readable; any file of any type with this date was not).
3. The word documents of this type were unreadable with 'recovery' software or word's own recovery system.
4. I have had continuously running and updated virus software with daily 'clean' scans.
5. I did a Dell diagnostics on the computer and their extensive hard disk scan - no problems.
6. I do have online back up software but it, unfortunately, backed up the corrupted files since they were "modified."
7. My windows event log doesn't show anything happening at the time of this mass file modification.
8. File names are normal (for example, Letter to JP.doc). All files were created by me.

I can't find anything really similar searching the net or microsoft's knowledge bases. Does this look familiar to anyone? Any ideas to fix? (other than switching to a mac ;-) ) Thanks!

When copying a folder or files from one location to another location or to a different media, is it possible that the copied folder/files retain its original date modified rather than showing the date when it was copied.  Having the original
date on the file and folder help when doing audit tracking.

Answer:Keeping the Date Modified the same when doing a copy

There is an option in robocopy to copy those attributes.  Run help on robocopy (robocopy /?) and look for /COPY and /COPYALL options.Rich Prescott | Infrastructure Architect, Windows Engineer and PowerShell blogger | MCITP, MCTS, MCP

Answer:unreadable documents with same modified date

Hi palmbsea !

What are the extension of those files ? In order to see the file extensions you have to open windows explorer (or my computer), go to tools => folder options => view and uncheck "hide extensions for known file types".

Could you provide us with some of the complete file names ? Are they documents you recall having created yourself ?

I want to classify these files year wise and keep each in a folder having the particular year as name. This should be done for all these 50 parent folders. Then each folders and sub folders should be compressed.

Please help me,,, preferably not batch commands

Answer:Compress files modified before a particular date

How would you like this task solved if you don't want it done with a batch file?
