I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

NOTE that this site uses software that highlights certain words in the text so that they're blue and underlined. If a post is long enough to require scrolling down to see all of it, due to whatever bug or bugs, the highlighted words DO NOT move as you scroll down the text. When you have scrolled down and you see a blank space where it looks like text should be, hold your mouse cursor briefly over any blue highlighted and underlined word or words that are not in the right place to make them pop into the proper place in the text. The software seems to only highlight and underline the first occurrence of a word or words, in the entire Topic. The mis-placed blue highlighted and underlined words can be in the post, or above or below the post.In this case the blue words external and monitor appear below this post. .....Have you, or is it possible someone else who had access to this computer...- dropped it, or dropped anything on it, or otherwise exposed it to a physical jolt ?- spilled liquid on it, or sprayed it with liquid, or exposed it to liquid such as rain ?Since the video last worked properly all the time, has there been a power failure event that happened while the AC adapter was plugged in ?Those things are the most frequent reasons something inside the laptop has been damaged. .......You have NOT told us enough !I'm assuming you have NOT installed ram that has not been installed in this computer before just before this happened. (If you HAVE done that, if you still have it, try installing ONLY the ram in it that was installed in it before when the computer worked fine.)Are you getting...1. - no video at all, even BEFORE Windows is supposed to load ?- or - 2. - you DO get normal video every time you boot the computer BEFORE Windows is supposed to load, but NO video at all AFTER Windows is supposed to load ?- or - 3. - you DO get normal video every time you boot the computer BEFORE Windows is supposed to load, but you're getting a black screen with an error message on it instead of normal Windows graphics ?If yes, if there are different choices you can try on the screen, have you tried all of them but you always end up at the same screen with the error message ?.....For 1., if the leds on the computer are lighting up normally, try connecting an external monitor,or if the leds on the computer are NOT lighting up normally...In the following, the same things that apply to laptops also apply to netbooks. Hello CliffordJ. Microsoft Security Essentials is installed, correct? Hello,

_sometimes_ my sattelite A660-10x (PSAW3E) wont start.
I turn it on, you hear the fan coming up, on screen you see blinking cursor on left top screen, than it sort of jumps more to left and top more into corner and stops. Nothing happens, after a while i turn off the laptop.
If i do this 3-5 times eventually it starts. Sometimes it starts on first attempt.

What i tried:
Reinstalling the PC from disc partition with Win7
Taking out HDD into my desktop PC and running CHKDSC with scanning and repairing errors.
Cleaning up the whole PC from dust, fans etc.
Pulling out/in battery/AC
Memory check (RAM)
Processor power management change the minimum processor state from 5% to 100%

I understand PC well but so far have no idea what can cause this. The only thing what comes to mind is that the partition at start of the disc has errors which i cant reach since there is boot partition, original-installation partition, and the rest which is the only one i cant reach with CHKDSC.
What i heard that someone tried is changing the Motherboard battery (the small round one), can it be it?

It doesnt seem to be disc or LCD problem, nor RAM memory.

Answer:Satellite A660-10X sometimes wont start - black screen at start-up

> I turn it on, you hear the fan coming up, on screen you see blinking cursor on left top screen, than it sort of jumps more to left and top more into corner and stops. Nothing happens, after a while i turn off the laptop.

Flashing cursor in the left upper corner is a known sign and could be related to faulty HDD or RAM memory problems.

Memory check could be performed and from my experience such memory checks provide approximately correct results. But even if the memory check would not find any RAM problems, it could be still an RAM related issue.

Of course, I cannot say for sure, if its RAM related issue or maybe its related to another faulty part.
Fact is that such issue is caused by hardware problems and in worst case the motherboard would need to be replaced.

Hi,

Can someone please help me? I'm a first-time forum user

I've got an Acer Aspire laptop here that has decided to stop loading/starting up.

When I turn the power button on:
- I can see the Acer logo screen (and also get into setup if I press F2)
- The cursor (_) blinks once or twice
- Then the screen just goes black/blank and stays that way

Twice (when I have left power on at the black screen), I have eventually seen this Windows Boot Manager message (maybe after 5 minutes each time):

Windows failed to start. A recent hardware of software change might be the cause. To fix the problem:

1.Insert your Windows installation disc and restart the computer.
2.Choose your language settings, and then click "Next".
3.Click "Repair your computer."

If you do not have this disc, contact your system administrator or computer manufacturer for assistance.

Status: 0xc000000f

Info: The boot selection failed because a required device is inaccessible.
Unfortunately, I do not have the Windows installation disk.

I have tried using a System Repair Disk (on DVD, burnt from another laptop with same OS)....but got stuck when the broken laptop didn't detect or couldn't read the disk.

I also tried the Alt+F10 system recovery, but after 20 minutes on the "Please wait a moment..." screen, I gave up and turned the power off.

Please help. Thanks.

Answer:Acer won't start, Black screen / Windows failed to start

Hello noob and welcome to Seven Forums.

Can you get into Safe Mode via the Advanced Boot Options menu? If yes, you can check for damaged or corrupt system files by running a system file checker scan from an elevated command prompt (option two in the SFC tutorial.) If problems are found, run the scan 3 times and reboot the computer after each scan.

Safe Mode

SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker

Another possibility from Safe Mode is to try rolling back your computer to a date/time prior to this problem occuring using a system restore point.

System Restore

If the above desn't help, one of the Forum experts prepared a troubleshooting guide for failure to start issues.

When I start up, my desktop will go black then normal then black and finally back to normal. I had a new video driver downloaded which helped fix the grainy resolution but the black to normal still exists. Any ideas?

Answer:Desktop goes black and then normal at start up

check for nasties (virii, warez) then troubleshoot to see if theres any programs that are causing it on startup.

since you've changed the vid drivers, try rolling back to its previous version and see if that makes any difference

confirm that you have good temps and power is ok:
1. Speedfan or Everest home, as well as Bios Hardware Monitor can view these things
2. power connections to every device are secure and undamaged
3. try reseating the video card
4. PSU: Bad/Underpowered PSU can cause you headaches, check here - http://www.extreme.outervision.com/psucalculator.jsp
5. Clean your case off dust...

that should get the ball rolling for you...

so I was fixing my start screen to look good . Then I wanted this game Reckoning to be at the bottom of my game called Chaos Legion . If anyone could help me , please give me the solution . Thanks

Franz,

Answer:Is this normal on my Start Screen ?

The way the Start screen "fills" the icon space is specific, and it won't let you do that. I'm just doing an educated guess here from my experience trying to arrange Start screen icons, but it seems to want to fill the space by two-wide columns, top down first. To move your Reckoning under Chaos Legion would leave the void at the next two-wide location, so it wants to fill that first. Maybe there's a Start screen tweak program somewhere someone's done to modify that...

I'm running XP SP3 Pro. I had to run Combofix recently, and ever since after I used it, whenever I turn on my computer, I get a black screen saying "normal start up" or "recovery console" for about 4-5 seconds, then it continues to boot normally. Any idea how to disable this?

Answer:Boot screen at normal start up

Start>run>msconfig

Check under the boot tab. Take a screen shot and upload it. I dont remember exactly what that image looks like. It has been 4 years since i used XP.

Hi all,
I am currently using windows 8.1 on a HP Laptop. Every time I am closing an app, it immediately goes straight to the normal desktop view. Is there a way to let it go on the metro UI start screen? I have tried going to the taskbar and uncheck where it says "When I sign in or close all application on screen, go to the desktop instead of Start"
When the box is unchecked it doesn't seem to work. Does anyone have any idea how to resolve my issue?
Thanks in advance :)

Answer:Switch between metro ui start screen and normal desktop screen

Did you click "Apply"? Just trying to diagnose it, that's all.

Hi all!

I started in the Malware forum and after they reviewed my logs they sent me here.

I have a HP Pavilion Elite
64 bit
intelcore 2 quad
750GB

When I start up in normal mode my desktop loads and my mouse moves but
the screen is frozen.

I have No problem in safe mode.

When I ran a Kaspersky full scan it got to 92% complete and then blue screened (I don't remember what it said)

I followed the read&run me directions and have the logs for that process--which the Malware folks said look clear.

All I have done since this started is attempted to run Kaspersky and followed read&run me. No new software has recently been installed.

I can't do a system restore because I have no saved restore points:cry
(Inexperienced computer user)

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Just a little FYI, my computer experience is... point and click so talk slow

Thanks

Answer:start up in normal mode=frozen screen.

It sounds like Kaspersky may have fouled something up during the scan that does not load when you boot into safe mode. You could try using your os installation cd to repair any windows files that may need it- just pop it in and follow the relevant prompts to repair. You might also try disabling all nonessential startup programs from safe mode using Startup CPL and then booting into regular windows.

Are you able to do anything at all after windows has loaded besides moving the mouse?... can you open task manager?

When I allow Win 7 to load normally, all actions are very slow. Takes 15-20 sec to bring up Google in newest Explorer. Frequently hangs-website not responding. If I load system in safe mode with network support, runs very fast (1-2 sec ot open Google) No hangs. I get error message with normal load to run CHKDSK but when CHKDSK starts, a message appears that CHKDSK is terminated. I have gone through a complex process using a emergency restart disk to start CHKDSK from a command line and the response is not normal. My computer is a Lenovo T60.I have completed memory check and it is good.

Answer:Win7 Very slow normal start, Safe start with Net -fast

Hello Buddypup and welcome to Seven Forums.

Couple of things you can try. If you haven't already done so, run a full scan with your anti-virus of choice. Even if it comes back clean (no malware found) I'd then run an on-demand scanner like Malwarebytes, ESET Online Scanner, SuperAntispyware, etc. I'd next perform some basic "housekeeping" chores by running Disk Cleanup and Disk Defragmenter. If you're still having issues I'd move on to a Clean Boot (AKA: Clean Startup.)

Troubleshoot Application Conflicts by Performing a Clean Startup

And finally, I'd look through this troubleshooting guide prepared by one of the Forum experts. It offers some additional things to try.

Windows crashed during uninstall. (First Blue Screen).
Windows restarted automatically, OK.

Jetico was still there, so I uninstalled it again.
The uninstall froze. I waited a long time, then shut down the computer normally.

Answer:[SOLVED] Blue screen when trying to start Vista in Normal mode

Hi buggywhip7

I believe your Hp has a restore partition that can do either complete or partial restores. You'd press the F10 key at startup to try either of those. [Did you create a Recovery Disk when you first brought the PC home?] If you have decent backups, you could go the complete recovery option - but you'll have to restore all data and programs added since you bought the PC. If you do a partial restore, use a date from before you installed Jetico.

Some other quicker-fix ideas ---
1) Try a run of the Vista version of Windows File Protection from Safe Mode --- http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929833/en-us
2) You could try a run of Vista's "System Restore" from Safe Mode - again, choosing a restore point from before Jetico was installed.
3) I only recommend one Registry Cleaner, and only for severe cases like yours -- CCleaner. It might help cleanup after Jetico's mess. --- http://www.download.com/CCleaner/300...-10315544.html --- Run the Cleaning functions to clean temp files, then run the Issue functions to clean the Registry. Run the Issues functions until CCleaner reports "no issues found".

There are many reasons for the stop error you are receiving -- in many cases, they arise from troublesome drivers. Among the drivers that can cause that error are the drivers for your network device (onboard ethernet, wireless, or PCI card) -- I noticed that you blue-screen even in Safe Mode if you add the Networking support. Perhaps Jeti... Read more

This has been bleeping bugging me for a while now. No matter how hard I try, I can't seem to configure msconfig to start to Normal Startup. This is what happens: If I select "Normal Startup", "/safeboot" and "minimal" are automatically selected. If I deselect "/safeboot", then "Selected Startup" is automatically selected. Furthermore, some of my services -- primarily my printer -- do not start and when try to start it manually, nothing happens. Does anyone have any suggestions?

I have followed this instruction.

Steps to configure Windows to use a Normal startup state
After you used the clean boot to resolve your problem, you can follow these steps to configure Windows XP to start normally.
Click Start, and then click Run.
Type msconfig, and then click OK.
The System Configuration Utility dialog box is displayed.
Click the General tab, click Normal Startup - load all device drivers and services, and then click OK.
When you are prompted, click Restart to restart the computer.
After doing this my taskbar remains tan in color, its not a huge deal, but I'm curious why it wont reset properly.

Answer:I used MSCONFIG for selective start, now I need normal start.

Hi

I think the colour of your taskbar is more something to do with the themes you are using rather than resetting the services back to normal.

Right click the desktop and go into properties and set the themes to Windows standard. Maybe that will cure the problem

So the other day, i was watching a video on my computer and the entire thing just white screened and died,
Then when ever i started it, it would blue screen, then start the whole thing again,
So i re installed windows, and after i reinstalled it will now only start in safe mode, this is the start up screen, as you can see there are some mistakes in the writing.

Even when i tell it not start in safe mode it does.

So my friend talked me through resetting my motherboard bios, but it will still only start in safe mode, i have disabled it in control panel.

This is what it looks like when i unplug the harddrive and turn it on, so it isnt a problem with my HD, so i was wondering if i could reset my motherboard to factory defaults, my motherboard is an asrock 970DE3/U3S3

Answer:PC will only start in Safe mode even when i tell it to start in normal

Yes, you should be able to reset the bios for the motherboard to defaults. But to do that you need to get into the bios and find the section that has reset to defaults button.

Answer:Black-Screen start-up

Do you hear anything on startup? Any beeps? Does the hard drive spin?

It sounds like it can't find the boot loader for Vista. Do you have the installation CD? If so, you might be able to boot to it. Put it in your CD drive, and open your BIOS (press F2 at startup). Find the option that says something about boot sequence. Set your CD/DVD drive to be the first boot device. Save the settings and restart the computer. It should boot into the installation cd.

Look for an option that says "Repair an installation". You'll want to select that, and open a command prompt. Once in the command prompt, type fixmbr. Let it do it's thing, and restart the system. You'll have to re-enter BIOS and change the boot order again, this time set the first boot device to be the hard drive.

It should boot after that. If it doesn't, do all of the above again, except when in the command prompt, type fixboot and proceed as before.

Please can someone help me? I am NOT technically minded and so find it hard to sort out problems or even understand the answers (not a good start).

My PC has been running well - until today! I switched on, the PC worked, it booted up normally and got to the 'windows loading' green bar at the bottom. The screen went blank - the monitor did not go 'off' and neither did the PC.

If I turn the monitor off and on, the screen display is all there - windows has started and there's my desktop. Before I can do much with it though everything goes black again. I tried this a few times and the same thing happened. I booted up with my finger on F8 - booting in safe mode is no different - the PC responds as it should but the screen still goes black. By switching the monitor on and off repeatedly I limp forward to the point where I can do a 'windows repair'. This appears to work and I am now using my PC (obviously).

I have no idea if this will happen again - I wondered if some automatic update has clashed with graphics drivers but I don't know what I'm talking about nor what to do with the thought :-)

Please could someone give me a best guess solution in easy speak - I stress - I'm not in the least bit techie - any help most gratefully received - I'm scared to switch off now in case I can't get back here! Thank you.

Cheers
Karen

Hi, I recently rebuilt my new pc putting in new psu (old one died) and watercooling, I temporarily put the hdd in a pentium 4 whilst the new pc was out of use.

When I put the hdd back into new pc and started up, the screen was black, and remained black until I was in xp and my desktop was visible.

I tried resetting bios, and this appeared to work at first as I saw the logo on boot up, and the windows screen with moving bar came on as well as the blue welcome screen. But now I don't see anything at all until I see the desktop.

The monitor light also flashes on and off a few times during start up.

My pc specs are:

Biostar TPower I45 motherboard
Intel E8600 core 2 duo (2 x 3.33GHz) o.c'd to 3.6GHz
Radeon HD 4870 1GB Sonic Dual Edition graphics card
4GB DDR2 1066 ram
Corsair TX650W PSU
Corsair H50 CPU Watercooler
NZXT hush case (Black)
Maxtor 250GB hard drive
LG dvd/cd writer
LG W2243S monitor (22 inch widescreen)
Wireless Mouse (logitech)
Wireless Router (belkin)
Wireless Headphones (Philips)
Also, I tried uninstalling then installing my graphics card drivers and associated software (like ATI catalyst control centre) as well as the monitor software.

But this doesn't seem to have helped, and sometimes on start up, the catalyst control center says there was a problem, but its not clear what it was, it gives a load of codes and stuff.

I think I need to try computer with a different monitor, but I can't do that until I can borrow one.

I have been trying to fix my cousin's netbook for the past couple days. When I first got it they told me that it had a virus so I was thinking I could just run Malwarebytes and maybe a couple other things to fix the problem but when I got it it turned out to be something different.

First off its an Asus eee 1005HAB, from what I have found out it seems to be a recurring problem that eee computers have.

When I hit the power button sometimes they asus logo pops up(but most of the time it doesn't) like its going to start but it goes directly to a black screen with a blinking underscore in the top left corner. I can get to the BIOS but nothing else works. I don't have a back up cd (not that it would work no cd drive on a netbook).

Is there anyway I can fix this problem?

Answer:Black screen at start up.

If there is a Recovery Option then try to recover your lappy. For procedure of how to recover it read its instruction manual or Google it on web by visiting to ASUS site entering the model number. If this doesn't solve your problem and as you said u do not have the backup DVD with yourself....then at last I think you have to reinstall the OS........

Although I can move the mouse around the screen, I cannot left click or alt-cntrl-del to open up task manager. When I try to boot in safe mode I get the exact same problem - it won't get passed a black screen with a mouse pointer. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for your time.

I've a Packard Bell desktop PC running Vista Home Premium. Have had it for a couple of years. Have kept up to date with all relevant updates.
On Sunday when I turned on my PC and screen the screen did not display (remained black). Windows loaded and I then turned the screen off and turned it back on again and lo-and-behold the display was OK and remained OK thereafter. The same happened on Monday so I did a system restore to last Friday (when all was working OK). Today (tuesday) the same - black screen on start-up - occured. I had not added any software between Friday and Sunday, I do not use any 'hibernation' type functionality.
If I do a restart the screen displays OK.
Help I'm a bit lost as to what may be causing this behaviour ?
Any advice greatly received
Thanks

I have an HP laptop with XP Home. The laptop is not booting into Windows. When I try to start it, it goes past the BIOS to a black screen with the safe mode and other start options. It allows me to make choices, but freezes after a choice is made. The laptop is out of warranty, so I would like to try to track down the problem without resorting to their tech support. My first impression is that the hard drive may be the problem as I know several other people with similar HP models who have experienced HD failures within the first year. The laptops of this model seem to run very hot as they have Celeron processors that are not of the M variety. Any suggestions as to where I can start to look for the solution?

IF it locks up no matter what choice you make [like even safe mode, last known good config etc] there's a few things you can do.

1. remove recently added hardware, reboot. fix? if no go to step 2.
2. get your copy of win xp [the cd] out and put it into the cd drive. turn off the computer. turn it back on, and boot to the cd [*****see note below]. while its booting to cd it could take a few mins. once at the setup screen chose R for repair, then on the next screen you hit the 1 for the os choice, then enter, then enter for the password, then you'll have a prompt.. just type chkdsk /r and hit enter. this'll take 45mins to run. when done turn computer off, turn back on.. let boot up if fix great if no then step 3.

So far I've...*Performed a Hard Reset.*Tried BIOS recovery (Win +V and even B)*Tried System Diagnostic Test (f2)*Removed both RAM and tested each in different slots and even alone.*Black Magic (virgin sacrifice)Note: Screen is blank, no mouse arrow. Fan still runs. WiFi button is red (ever since Windows 10 update last year). Caps Lock button does blink, but only once every 3-4 seconds. So no light code that I've seen. This has happened from time to time after windows update, but the hard reset usually fixed it.Does anyone have anything else I can try? Hi there,

I am running windows 7 on a Toshiba Equium P300, and am experiencing problems on start up. What I am getting is a black screen without a cursor, just after the Toshiba screen disappears, which then allows me to do nothing. I am able to get to the F2 & F12 screens but struggling from there. I have tried changing the boot priority, but nothing works, just the black screen. F8 does not work, it just bleeps at me when I press it.
Help me please, because I am starting to believe there is nothing I can do.

I am having trouble starting Windows XP.

My screen turns black after first seeing the 'Win' logo.

Most people with this problem, seem to have the screen turn black after the Windows XP logo, although mine is before.

I have no option to boot in Safe-mode, etc.

Unsure of computer specs; I know that is a an HP computer.

This is my dad's computer, and he said that while he was watching "videos", the desktop PC popped up a BSOD of the Page_Fault_in_non_paged_area error type. After waiting several minutes to re-power the PC, the computer does not load anything, and the desktop emits out a loud and non-stop "whirring" noise. I decided to check the Ram one by one, and they all (individually and collectively) load up past the screen with F11,etc command options, but go no further when the screen becomes black (with a blinking underscore in the top left and an off-centered orange block). I've attached a picture of this.

Hello I have a Toshiba Satellite L305-S5921 with me and it seems that when I turn it on it takes a little while for the windows logo to appear and after it is done loading, it just turns into a black screen and that's it. I can't put in any commands and I haven't tried safe mode yet because when I restarted the computer, it didn't even bother to load up the Windows logo screen like the last time I booted it up. Sorry I don't have the specs for this computer as I am offsite but, when we start the computer it won't get to the Windows screen. After the normal initial screen it just goes black with the blinking cursor and never advances further. Weirdly if I opt to boot via the CD drive (even if there is nothing in the CD drive), it will advance and load Windows and function completely normally. The glitch is only apparent when booting up.

Go into the BIOS setup screen and then set the CD drive first in the boot order and then save the change and exit.

Hey,

This morning my comp downloaded a security update for IE;

Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer 8 for Windows XP (KB978207)

Security issues have been identified that could allow an attacker to compromise a system that is running Microsoft Internet Explorer and gain control over it. You can help protect your system by installing this update from Microsoft. After you install this item, you may have to restart your computer.

Since it was installed whenever I turn my PC on it sticks at a black screen for a few mins before re-booting and loading properly.

It says I can remove this update if I want, but I'm not sure I should.

Help please?

Answer:Black Screen on start up.

mmm, after downloading this update my "each day" account reported that it was corrupt. I went in to my admin account, decided to do an Acronis disk image first and then tried my other account again - this time it worked. Have you tried your admin account, or even safe mode? If so do they load properly. Personally I'm not sure removing the update would be a good idea as it apparently plugs a vast hole in IE.

Hello, I have a frustrating problem ever since I did windows critical update and changed anti virus and this problem occurred yesterday. Every time I reboot my PC, a black screen appears with a cursor shows up for a few minutes before going onto login screen/welcome screen. I did system restore back to a month and it still doesn't work. I uninstalled anti virus to see if that might be the case and the black screen is still there. I then reformatted my pc by reinstalling windows 7 again using the disc and the problem is still there. My pc is only one year old as well and it's quite fast and quiet. Normally when I startup my PC it goes straight onto the welcome screen/desktop without this black screen. What can I do in this case? Much help will be appreciated.

My problem is: -I press the power button on my tower; it lights up and the ?hp? logo briefly flashes on the monitor. The monitor goes then blank/black.I press and hold the power button on the tower. The power light goes out, and the monitor THEN indicates ?no signal?, as it should.I repress the power button on the tower, and everything boots up, as it should ? most of the time. Also, I cannot get my tower to wake up from sleep ? I have to force a shutdown, by pressing down and holding the power button on the tower.I am hoping someone out there has a SIMPLE solution. Please note, this is new computer with windows 10 pre installed.

I Have Win. XP Professional

The last two days when I start my computer up in the mornings, I get a blank black screen. The first day I rebooted and held the f-8 button down and everything was back to normal. The system ran fine all day. Today, it started the same way. I hit the f-8 button, nothing. I find my xp disc, put it in, restart, everything back to normal again. What is going on with this? Also, I hit the f-1 button and got the bio screen up, but nothing else. I am afraid I have a virus working in there somewhere. Please advise!!!

Answer:black screen on start up

When Windows Safe Mode starts okay but Normal Mode does not, it's typically caused by installing a bad/incompatible device driver, or by installing software which includes a driver such as:1) CD/DVD burning software.2) Antivirus software3) Firewall softwareSo if you can remember recently installing a driver or any of the type of software listed above just before the problem started, uninstall it in Safe Mode then restart.

Hi,

When my computer starts up, there is nothing but a black screen for approx. two minutes until the Welcome screen appears. Hence, I cannot get into Safe Mode. Also, the computer in general is very slow.

At start up I get the message "CNYHKey.exe - Component not found. The application couldn't be started, because HKCYDLL.dll couldn't be found."

I've followed Broni's instructions to start the "Preparation Guide For Use Before Using Malware Removal Tools and Requesting Help", but dds.scr freezes the computer and gmer crashes. So, unfortunately, I cannot post any of the requested logs here.

For further information, please refer to previous thread http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic433903.html/page__st__15__gopid__2541954#entry2541954.

I have an Acer Aspire 5542 laptop. Suddenly yesterday the screen went black and would not display anything.  I could hear that it started up, but no display.  I checked a few forum posts from the past and found information on this problem, and I followed the directions with no change.  I have the 3 discs from when I purchased it - I believe it was 6 years ago, and so I put them in 1 at a time and turned it on again.  The screen lit up and acted normally.I have the battery out and am using only ac power and I had tried with an external monitor prior to trying anything else and it did not work.  The fn/f6, fn/f5 did not do anything, nor did fn/esc held down help.  I let the laptop turn off on its own after getting it back, and the same thing happened again last night.  I got it back by the same method but want to find out the problem and the reason it is doing this.  Could it be the Bios need to be updated?  I don't even know what that is :-~, but saw it listed as maybe a problem???  I am not computer literate, but will try to solve problems if I can without going to a service center.  I restored my laptop a few months ago with no problem back to original, after backing up my files.  Sometimes I make mistakes.  I don't want to end up making one this time. Can you help?

Answer:Screen black on start up

I don't know why no one has responded to my post.  I thought this was a forum with help from other users and that at least the moderator or some Acer tech would have replied.  I have found a version of Bios update on the Acer site, but I have been told that the version 1.09 is harmful rather than helpful and that is the most recent update that they have listed from 2010 June 23.  Are there any other like forums that anyone would suggest to get some answers? Thanks for any help you can give.

Well, my main computer, upon bootup will sit with a black screen on the monitor. Now, the monitor doesnt even detect that the computer is sendign it a signal as it says "no signal input" when i turn the screen on and then remains black.

Normally when i turn my computer on there is a loud whirring noise that thend ies down to a softer noise and then boosts back up to a louder whirring noise again and remains that way through use untill shutdown. Now it doesnt even go past the first stage (it remains with the softer noise). Whats more, the flashing light on the PC case that normally goes crazy upon bott up and game use etc, to indicate hard drive access, doesn't flash once.

All this came after earlier that day i kept recieveing a blue screen of death after the vista loading screen. As a result i pulled out and plugged back in both my graphics cards (leaving them out for about 10 seconds) before reatching the 'crossfire' slide and tryign again, only to find the previously described black screen problem.

I then tried plugging my screen into a different socket (on the graphics card that previously had nothing plugged into it) and i still recieved the same problem with no variation. Upon trying to plug in my old screen (recieved my new one 2 days ago) there again, was no variation.

My system has the following specs:

- intel quad core CPU overclocked to 3.2ghz.
- 2x ATI radeaon HD 4870's om crossfire mode. Overclocked to have a comb... Read more

Hi, I hope some of you can be of assistance to me.

This morning when I started my laptop I got the always pleasant black screen treatment...

It is an Asus F7SE, about two years old.

The computer starts, fans are running, lights for power and "on" working, the initial sound/beeps and the "ASUS" letters at the very beginning. Then black screen. I get no BIOS Post (info at the start) and Vista is not starting.

Have anyone experienced something similar or have any idea what I can do?

I have looked around on the net but not found anything helpful so far. I am not what you would call a computer expert but have some knowledge at a beginner/intermediate level.

Any helpful answers are much appreciated.

Hello, I seem to have a problem with windows as it starts up it will get to the desktop, load the icons, and start bar, and then suddenly go black for a few seconds and then proceed as normal. I'm not sure I've noticed it before, and it get's to be quite annoying, as I've never seen it do it before. I have no unusual programs booting up at start up. I think it may be the ATI drivers, but I'm not sure.

Also, sometimes after I let my computer sit after a while, and wake it up, it will just shut itself down, and that REALLY pisses me off. I checked to see if i had it setup to turn my harddrive off after idle, but no, nothing is set to turn off after idle.

Hopefully someone can help me with this, and if anything sounds too vague, please ask me for more information, thanks guys.

Answer:Black Screen at Start

It is the Ati drivers.. They blanc the screen for a second right after boot.. I think it started with the .net catalyst control center versions of the drivers...
Your second problem, I am not sure about.. I don't think it is the Ati drivers doing that..

Hello,

I have a Gateway laptop with Vista. Before today it never really caused me any problems and there was no critical warning signs.

My problem is upon starting my computer the screen is black and nothing happens. I can hear the fan running but at a lower volume then usual. The keyboard does not respond at all so pressing F8 or any other commands is useless. The CDrom does respond if I press eject on the side.
There are two things that I did today that I normally never do. First, I ran a disk clean up and I also had a USB "F Drive" SanDisk inserted into my computer because ironically I was seeing if I could use it to back up all my work and notes but I had no success.

After turning off my computer, this problem occurred maybe 20 mins later after I turned it back on. Also, there is no cursor on the screen it just a blacks screen with nothing else on it so it doesnt even look like that my monitor is on. I tried plugging my laptop into another monitor to see if that was the issue but it wasn't.

If I find a recovery disk to use will I be able to recover my work? Any ideas?

Answer:Black Screen on Start up

Go with starting up with the recovery disk.
See if you can get into SafeMode and run SF Diagnostic Tool - Using for Troubleshooting - Windows 7 Forums

Windows 7 used to work just fine on my HP Pavilion zd8000 laptop, until a few weeks ago suddenly it decided to go into black screen mode whenever I start up. The "windows is starting" icon shows, then it goes black... i hear the little jingle, but the screen is still dead. I have tried all the fixes, including setting it back to a previous date, etc. Finally I gave up on all that and reinstalled everything. It worked okay until it finished all the updates, and then the same thing happened again. This sucks. Now its back to Ubuntu for me on my trustee little Toshiba. Windows, I give up!

Hey all, I've been having a rather unusual start up problem, which I can't find relevant information on, through google:

When I try to turn my laptop on, it only gets so far:

vaio logo

 logo.jpg   144.51KB
  1 downloads

then black screen with tiny flashing dash

 dash.jpg   149.81KB
  5 downloads

and that's where it stubbornly stops. Every time.

I can't even get to the boot menu. No amount of hitting F8 takes me to the boot menu, or produces ANY response (yes, it's definitely F8 on this computer). The only thing the computer responds to in this state is ALT+CTRL+DEL, which restarts it.

A bit of context:
Last night my computer had a small "blue screen" crash -- nothing unusual, this has happened to me before on this and other computers, without any serious damage. But this time, I'm having the problems described above.

What I've tried so far
Here's what happens when I try to boot using my Windows Vista installation/recovery disk, downloaded and burned from this site.

Vaio logo, black screen with dash, and then upon hitting F8:

 penguin.jpg   204.87KB

I hear the CD drive spin (which is a good thing, means it's working), but then an image of the Ubuntu penguin and lots of commands that I don't understand. That's absolutely not what the CD is supposed to do.

Answer:BLACK SCREEN -- WON'T START UP

One thing to check first is if the drive is not dead or still usable at this stage. Try reseatting the hard drive but first inspect the pins and contact points if they are not damaged or dirty. If everything is clear, reseat it properly with some or most laptops have screws to keep them firmly in place. Remove the laptop battery and press the power button for half a second. Now try booting it up again. If nothing happens go here and use the bootable disc to try and salvage your data. Let us know how it work out.
