Can't read some .jpeg file on an external HD

Question: Can't read some .jpeg file on an external HD

I can't read some jpeg files on my laptop (Windows XP) from an external hard drive while i can read them on another computer (Vista and Windows XP). This is a recent problem, since last week end, after replugging the external HD, only some of the .jpeg file are accessible and can be visualized. Other in different directories can't be readen. If i plug the same HD to another computer, the jpeg file that were visible in the first computer can't be readen, while i can access to the one that were not previously visible.I would appreciate any help.

Preferred Solution: Can't read some .jpeg file on an external HD

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Can't read some .jpeg file on an external HD

The external drive requires that the USB port you plug it into can supply 500ma, and even if it can it may not read properly in all USB ports - e.g. a port in an external hub. There are lots of laptops that can't supply 500ma per port when more than one USB device is plugged into the ports built into it - it can only supply 500ma total for all the ports, or for a pair of ports - if you plug in only the external drive it may read fine, or you may need to plug it into two USB ports via a USB Y cord.Troubleshooting USB device problems including for flash drives, external drives, memory cards.See Response 1:http://www.computing.net/answers/ha...

Recently I acquired an LCD multimedia display with built in jpeg reader. I used the flash card with jpeg images on it, from my camera, to test it and the display's reader worked fine. Then I downloaded jpeg's from my computer onto the same flash card and tried to view them and could not. I then put the card into the camera and it would not recognize those jpeg's either, only the images made by the camera. Both would, however, open another jpeg image made by an earlier camera. All the images work fine when viewed on the computer and I cannot tell them apart by any means that I know of to get info on them. I have reformatted some to no avail. I also downloaded images directly from the web and tried them, same problem - once on the flash card, neither camera or the display's reader sees them. Since I have always gone the other way, viewing and reviewing photo images after loading them onto my hard-drive, this problem is perplexing and, so far, I haven't run across it in on-line resources. Any
insight on this would be appreciated.

Answer:external jpeg viewer won't read some jpeg's

With reverse viewing on a camera, the resolution and file naming structure and location (folder on the card) usually has to be exact or the camera will ignore the image.

Unsure about the LCD display, but could be a resolution limitation.

What is the difference between jepg and jpeg's file interchange format?

Answer:JPEG and jpeg file interchange format

Hello,

I am sorry i dont quite understand what you are asking?

Is there a difference between jepg or jpeg? No. They are both compressed image formats. Just like BMP is. PNG is the truest form of Images i have found.

I have a known good external usb drive formatted NTFS with data on it. I can access it fine through any number of computers in XP, Vista, 7, and 8 except for one particular XP computer.

I went through the trouble of copying the data off temporarily, and re-formatting the drive, and then putting the data back......but the damned computer still only sees it as a RAW filesystem, when it's fine on all the other systems.

I also notice it's not listing it as a removable drive in My Computer and disk management, but the safely remove hardware eject taskbar icon does.

Any ideas?

I was trying to send a fax with a jpeg file attached, the fax software wouldn't accept it so I renamed the jpeg a .tif now when I open it in ACDsee I get a blank screen, in properties it says its a jpeg with 495 kb. I went back and renamed it a jpg, but that didn't help! I tried to then open it in photoshop and got an error saying "unexpected end-of-file". I suppose I corrupted it somehow. Any way to fix it?

Answer:renamed to TIF now can't read jpeg!

Right-click on the file in ACDsee and selecy "convert". You can then make it a .JPG again, or PCX, or BMP. This should restore the end of file marker...

I have been given a selection of images on a CD-R to prepare for a forthcoming slide show. Some of which needed work done to them. I loaded the images from the CD into my computer and proceeded to work those that needed it in PSP8. The show needed then to be transferred to a flash card to view the show on TV via an image viewer[AverFotoPlay] To do this I ran them through XATSHOW - Standard to regain the camera XIF attributes where those that have been edited would have lost them. Part way through the copy process several [unedited] images threw up as 'Read Only' - With a Window denial message' and will not transfer . It turns out that of the 80 or so images all those after 57 are affected. Looking at the properties, of such an image , the read only box remained empty. The strange thing about this is as mentioned - they copied off CD into my machine OK and the modified set Burned to a new CD-R OK.They have also copied to a Zip So what is XAT seeing or not as the case may be? And what can be done to get round the problem So far I have tried ticking the Read only box, then unticking it and clicking on apply. - No Joy there I have tried giving a new name and using save as -no joy there either. I have also in Irfanview- converted a sample to BITMAP saving as to a new loctation then converting back to JPEG. have tried also tranferring the images 'straight' without goinf through XAT.Still the error massages come up. The Media cards[ Compact and Smart] will not accept this group- g... Read more

Answer:Phantom Read Only Jpeg Files

Jack as I understand things AverFotoPlay will play jpgfrom any camera as a slideshow, so why bother putting them through xatshow. Also once the exif has been stripped from an image file nothing can replace it, so I fail to see what you mean.Edit your images in PSP8 then transfer them directly to a flash card, AverFotoPlay should do the rest.

Hi,
The JPEG files/pictures that I scanned in from slides on my older XP computer won't open under my newer computer running Windows Photo Gallery. In fact it hangs the computer when I try to read or open the file. I am able to read files from a CD that I created from a digital camera on the older computer. Therefore I know that it isn't the old CD drive that is incompatible with the new system. The CDs read fine on the older computer. When I try to import the pictures it says no new pictures or videos are found on this device. Please send me some words of wisdom and know how.
Thanx

I am not very computer savvy and ended up deleting all my pictures of my newborn child. I purchased a program to recover my files and now when I try to open the pictures it says either the file was damaged or corrupted, that it is unable to read file form, or that I do not have a suitable graphics importer. I was told that the pics are in a temporary file? I've tried to open them through windows photo and kodak easyshare. If someone knows how to fix this, please help. I am desperate.

Answer:Recovered pics after deleting and now unable to read jpeg

Hi. . .

I need some additional information, please:

1. How did you originally delete the files (via "Delete" on right-click in Windows Explorer)?
2. Did you look in the Recycle Bin?
3. What recovery program did you use?
4. Why do you believe they are in a temporary folder?
5. Do you know the name of the temp folder?
6. What drive are/were they on (e.g., drive c: - Pictures folder, external hard drive, DVD, etc...)?
7. Is the file extension (the end of the file name) .jpeg, .jpg, etc...?
8. How many pictures (approx) are you looking for?
9. Is every one corrupted?

Hi guys don't really know where to put this because I don't know what is causing it.  I was infected with cryptolocker and the 4 files can still be found in just about every folder on the computer however the infection is no longer active?  I don't get the messages anymore when I reboot/log in.

After the infection was removed everything seemed fine.  That was a couple months ago. Last night I needed a picture and I went back to get it and found out all my thumbnails are gone (they show the place holder and file name but not the picture) and the pics wont open on an entire hard drive and scattered throughout the computer.  (I localize most pics on one drive) The video files are ok though.  I have been searching the web and downloaded data repair (stellarphoenix).  Tried photo shop because I read that it would open files with bad headers.  Tried gimp.  Tried my linux box.  When I look on the network linux cannot even see the files.  Tried the following command at C: assoc .jpeg=jpegfile and get access denied error occurred while processing jpeg.

In some folders half the files are there and half are not.  I originally noticed when I clicked on the image and got this message.  "windows photo viewer can't open this picture because the file appears to be damaged, corrupted or is too large.

Answer:How to convert a jpeg file to a dst file for embroidery

Hi pegs1731, and welcome to TSG.

Due to copyright concerns, members are no longer allowed to make DST files for other members.

https://forums.techguy.org/threads/requests-for-dst-file-conversions-please-read.1116354/

There may be free programs that will allow you to manually digitize your jpeg file to create a DST file. More automatic programs may be available, but they are not cheap.

How would i go about doing this?

Answer:Editing Mpeg File with a Jpeg File

You would have to edit each frame of the video file. It's not like there's a line of code that says "use face file man1.jpg". It's going to take more work than a file substitution.

Question: DST File from JPEG

I created a dst file from a jpeg and then took it to be embroidered but they said it had over 40k stitches and it needs to be about 5000 stitches for flat or 10-12k for raised. I can't seem to figure out how to make it smaller stitches. It is just supposed to be the letter T on a hat. Can anyone help me figure out how to get fewer stitches? It won't let me upload the dst file. I want the Outline of the T to be green and the inside of it to be white.

I made up a table with a bunch of different scans and pictures included on it without realizing it was going to be a pain in the butt to post it online because it is saved in an odt. format (Using Open Office 3).

I managed to get the file swiched over to JPEG format but it messed up the table, cutting of pictures ect. Is the anyway to get this switched over without having to spend hours editing it again? I appreciate any help!

Answer:How to convert an odt file into and jpeg file

I assume it's better to convert it to PDF.
I'm not familiar with Open Office, but regardless which program you used it's always possible to set up a virtual PDF printer like PDFCreator. Open your document in Open Office and select the PDFCreator for printing. The result should be a PDF file which looks like a printout of your ODT document.

Question: JPEG file error

Hi to all. I am not sure if this is the correct board to post my problem to! I apologize if I am wrong.

I save my picture albums in external storage device. Its the memory of an entire lifetime, my school, highschool and all. Now I opened it after many days to find that many of the JPEG files are showing 'X' although their properties are showing appropriate file size. If I try making a slideshow, it says 'No preview available'. I have tried opening it with MS Office Picture Manager and Adobe Photoshop 7 but of no avail. I have tried to look it up on google and tried repairing the images using a few free online picture repair tools, but it says no data available or something. Please help me resurrect those images. Try the free Irfanview. It can open and identify nearly any image format. It may even be able to correct errors. Download and install the plugins, too, to increase the program's functionality and the number of formats it supports.

It can convert from one type to another---just open the picture with the program, then go to File, Save As, and choose the format you would like in the dropdown box.

Question: Reduce a JPEG file

I am sure this would be easy for some of you. I have a 100x100 JPEG icon that needs to be reduced to 60x60 pixels. Is there free software that will reduce all components of the icon proportionally?

Answer:Reduce a JPEG file

I am a little confused.

A JPEG is a picture file. It only has a single component.

For it to have multiple components it would need to be a .ico file. and it wouldn't really need reducing since each of the componenets in an ico file are different sizes and color depths.

Question: jpeg file size

I have scanned a page that I want to put on my web site into my pc. After scanning it it's size is 292kb. I then go and save it as jpeg. It's size is then 492kb. I do not understand it as I have done this before and usually the size gets much smaller. When looking at the jpeg file it is associated with quick time. I dont know if this has any affect on it or not. Any help would be great. As far as I can remember I have not made any system changes.

Answer:jpeg file size

It may well be that the programme you are using is saving it with a lower compression. 492kb is far to large for the web. What programme are you using?. Even the free Irfanview gives you an option of the level of compression. You should also consider resizing your picture.click hereJpg`s should not be associated with Quick Time, your graphic programme should be the default for this type of file. If you don`t know how to change this, post again.

Is it possible to pin a jpeg file to the task bar so that I can easily open it with a single click from wherever I am. It is possible to pin it to the jump list for some programs on my Taskbar (eg Calculator & Notepad) but not to others (eg Explorer). I can also pin it to the Start menu. However, trying to pin it directly to the Taskbar fails.

And the reason for all this? The jpeg is a picture of the 2011 calendar which I would like to be able to call up with a single click from wherever I am and whatever is on the screen at the time.

Any other way of doing this will, of course, be gratefully accepted.

Answer:Can I pin a jpeg file to the Taskbar?

What about using a Gadget for the calendar (like the built-in one) or the Outlook Overlay that puts the calendar on your desktop?

how convert jpeg file to msword document

Answer:how to convert jpeg file to msword

You cannot do a conversion as such because one is a graphics file and one is a word-processing file. Easiest thing to do is insert the jpeg into a blank Word document and then save it as an MSWord file.If you don't have MSWord then you can do the same thing using OpenOffice, which is free and works with MSWord format."I've always been mad, I know I've been mad, like the most of us..." I would like to transform my picture files (JPEG) in the HTML form, so I can encrypt them so people won't be able to right-click on my pictures to copy them.

Can you tell me if it can be done and how?

Thank you

Answer:How to transform a JPEG file into HTML?

JPEG is an image, you can't just convert it to a text format like HTML. And any image you put online can be copied, no matter what format you put it in.

HiI sent jpeg images to my friends hotmail account & they haven't got through, just the text that i sent. They were sent via my Outlook Express as file attachments & i can't understand why, as when i send them from my OE to my hotmail, they get through ok.My friend is in Spain, could this be an issue as it maybe different hotmail!!, i dunnno.I sent it many times to hers & no luck, but to my hotmail is ok!Gaz

Answer:JPEG images not getting through as file attach!!

It may be due to the size of them, hold down ctrl and left click on the files, let go of ctrl and right click on 1 and choose send to email recipient, you will be asked if you want to make smaller, an outlook express message window will open. For the future, if you click on an empty part of the desktop and press F1 then type email pictures in the search box the genie will come out of the lamp, try it and see

Hello, Can Anyone Tell Me If It's Possible To Change A Bitmap Photo Into Jpeg Photo...if So, How..do I Need A Program..what Kind Etc.,...thanks.

Answer:Change Bitnap File Into Jpeg

You should be able to open it in any image editor or viewer. Edit > Save As and select JPG. Irfanview works well but I would think the Windows Picture and Fax viewer would do that. You get a better selection of JPG quality and options with Irfanview.

I have never had a firm grasp of how my Epson Perfection 1660 scanner creates files, so I went through a test sequence that left me more baffled. I scanned the same B & W document several times at 150 dpi, changing only the saved file format. For TIFF, the saved image was exactly the same size as indicated in the scan preview (177 KB). That makes sense to me. For JPEG, I used ten different degrees of quality, basically from 100 percent down to 10 percent. Amazingly to me, the JPEG file sizes were much, much larger than the TIFF, which I assumed would be the upper limit. The highest quality JPEG was nearly 10 times as large (1.60 MB) as the TIFF, and the sizes finally got comparable at about 10 percent quality. What am I missing here? Thanks.

Help,

I recently refrmatted my computer and now I have 1 folder in "My Pictures" which I can't do nothing with. The properties are the same as my other folder of pictures, which work but the only difference is when I click on one pictures properties and go to summary it says "summary properties are unavailable". I can open the folder, see the photos but when I click on any photo it says "no preview available". I can't edit or email any of these photos, keep in mind this is the only jpeg file I have that is doing this.

Thanks, Gytarman.

I've got a problem. I just got this computer that my Father In Law gave me and I was deleting his nude girly pics. One of the pics would not delete. It came from Kazaa but it is out of the Kazaa share folder and now it is on the desktop. I try to put it in the recycle bin but it says it can't be deleted. I've tried to rename it and it won't let me. I've opened it up in Photoshop and try to save it but it won't let me. I've run all kinds of AV's on it and they don't see it. My system is XP Pro. How do I get rid of this file! It's driving me nuts!!!:angry2:

Answer:Can't Delete A Corrupt Jpeg File!!!

:tongue2: First tell him to format the thing first next time.

Anyway, do you have admin rights on the system? Also is it a picture or an icon of a program (big diff.) If its a picture make sure nothing is running it and that kazaa is off at the time so its not being shared while your trying to delete it.

Answer:unable to open JPEG file

so, when you double-click on the little thumbnail versions of the pictures, they don't open properly? what program(s) have you been attempting to open them with? also, are they saved as .jpg files? (( when in windows explorer, go to the "views" menu and hit "details"; under "file type", it should say ".jpg". ))

the first thing you should do is attempt to open them using whatever program(s) came with your digital camera. most come with specific image-downloading software and viewing software. this will probably be your best bet.

you may want to try either inserting them in a microsoft word document (( on the top where the menus are: insert --> picture --> from file )) just to make sure they won't show up. or, you could right-click on the thumbnail of the picture, go to "open with" and try out some of the image programs on your computer. perhaps one can open it.

that's all i can really think of; please let me know how that works out for you. if it doesn't work, please write all the details you can (( i.e., what programs you tried, etc. ))

Answer:Jpeg and Tiff files..maybe even gif file

Jpg/Tiff you can just use the default Windows Picture Viewer.

In Vista/7/8, the picture viewer doesn't work with animated GIF's, so if you want to see an animated GIF, then you'll need to open it in a web browser.

I have a PSD file that I converted to a jpeg image for a Facebook cover. No problems so far. Looks right.

I needed to change the phone/name in this file sent to me. I don't have photoshop nor do I use it, so I opened the file in notepad++. Made changes then saved, however... when I go back to converting the file to jpeg, the image doesn't look like the original file that DID convert originally. Just a mess of colors. How did the first file convert just fine and the edited one did not? They are both PSD file extensions. Am I saving it in notepad++ wrong? There are no errors on the code, changes were only a name and phone number. I know I am overlooking something real simple, but can't figure out what that is.

thanks!

Answer:editing PSD file then converting to jpeg

You can use Paint.NET and the PSD plugin to open the file and edit it inside of Paint.NET. GiMP supports PSD out of the box but it has a steeper learning curve.

If you are sure that they are misnamed Jpg files, then all you should need to do is rename them. I suggest that you get the free program IrfanView, which will try to open them and tell you what filetypes they actually are. http://www.irfanview.com/

Many thanks in advance to anyone who can help me.

But in order for the text and diagram to be sent as a single attachment by Yahoo mail, the text must also be a jpeg file. So how can I incorporate my special math text (TexAide) into a jpeg file?

Answer:how can you create a jpeg file (for text)

Hello Roger, Welcome to TSF!

Perhaps the easiest way to achieve what you need is to use the built-in Windows? 'Paint' program.

Go Start > All Programs > Accessories > Paint.

Firstly create a screen shot of the .jpg image and paste it in "Paint" then using the edit function, add the text; then, save the finished work as a .jpg.

Hope this is helpful.

Kind Regards,

I have a friend who unfortunatly can only get dial up service in his area. He recently bought a dig camera and has a new grandaughter and would like to send pics of her to his friends overseas. Thanks in advance....

No such thing, I don't think.

You could try zipping the file, if you want the quality to remain the same..

hi, all. i was loading some pictures from my xd card and the file extensions came up as [email protected] and will not open. i may have removed the card from the reader before it was finished loading. i changed one file extension to jpeg but it says that the file may be corrputed. how can i restore these files. they are still on my xd card. thanks, jim.

Answer:incorrect jpeg file extensions

The extension should be ".jpg", without the quotes, naturally.

Give your reader a little time. Don't pull the card until the file transfer is complete and you can open the images. I do just to make sure they transferred properly.

I apparently downloaded a corrupt JPEG file onto my desktop and now it won't let me delete it. When I right click on it, it doesn't even give me the option of deleting it. The only options I have are "Open with Adobe Photoshop Album Starter Edition 3.0", "Preview", "Print", "Import into Adobe Photoshop Album Starter Edition 3.0", "Edit", "Open with...", and "Send to". Nothing happens when I click any of those except for "Open with..." and "Send to". When I try to open it with and program except Windows fax and picture viewer I get an error, and if I try to send it anywhere I get an error. And when I do use Windows fax and picture viewer there's no picture and it won't do anything when I try to delete it or rename it or anything like that. I've also tried system restore and that didn't work. I'd appreciate any help I can get. Thanks.

Answer:Unable to delete corrupt JPEg file

Hi and welcome to TSF...

Try using a handy little freeware program called Unlocker which can be downloaded from here:

http://ccollomb.free.fr/unlocker/

Once installed, right click on the jpeg image and then select Unlocker. If no 'locking handle' is found, choose Delete from the drop down menu and then select OK and that should sort it. If a 'locking handle' is present, choose delete from the drop down menu and then select Unlock All and that should fix it though you may be prompted to reboot to complete the process.

Any probs, please let me know :-)

The problem is that the scanned image (in this case the front cover of a football programme for eBay) is over 1mb even when saved as a jpeg. Whenever I attach JPEG files to an e-mail sent from my i phone 5 to my WIN 8 System, while I can view them within my AT&T webmail, when I subsequently download and attempt to open them in WIN 8, my system goes into an endless loop.  I don't know whether it is my ISP (AT&T / Yahoo) or the fact that the files are zipped (by i Phone) or WIN 8 can't handle it or?   I called Apple CS and they have no clue ... I asked whether I could e-mail the files to them from my i Phone, they said they didn't have an e-mail address that I could use (?).

The fact that WIN 8 goes into a flashing screened endless loop is most disturbing ... a reboot is required to recover the system!
Here's one of the files in question (Apple couldn't open it .. but their system (whatever it is) didn't loop).... Unfortunately, I couldn't e-mail it directly to them (thereby potentially eliminating them as a part of the problem)

Answer:i Phone 5 e-mailed jpeg file "loops" WIN 8

Yeah I can open it (contains 3 pictures of a gun).  I had to extract the files from the zip archive to view them, rather than try to open them directly from the zip.  I'm using Windows 7 BTW, but they are valid jpeg images.
