XP Add Remove Programs left pane menu trouble

Question: XP Add Remove Programs left pane menu trouble

I am working on my mothers computer. Usually when you open Add Remove Programs from the Control Panel, on the left hand side you will see 4 separate "icons" 1) Change or Remove Programs 2) Add New Programs 3) Add/Remove Windows Components 4) Set Program Access and Defaults. When I open my mothers only the Set Program Access and Defaults Icon is showing. Can anyone help me fix this?

Preferred Solution: XP Add Remove Programs left pane menu trouble

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Greetings:

My Start Menu looks kinda like this web pic.

Bottom line: Due to the other customizations I have implemented on my desktop,
the left pane to my start menu is empty, and I have no use for it either.

Is there an advanced way to disable / remove / hide just the left pane to the start menu
from being displayed, while still keeping the sharp looking aero glassy right side?

Thanks in advance for any info.

Answer:Disable / Remove / Hide Left Pane to Start Menu

Hello MeVII,

Not without installing a 3rd party Start Menu program. You might consider the free version of Start Menu 7 (aka: Start Menu X) to see how you like it for that.

Hope this helps,
Shawn

OK I'm probably repeating a topic but maybe someone can lead me to a correct answer. I would like to change my left pane background and the left pane background of my folders individualy and the main background in all folders! I've used dodgey programs before that have caused head aches. I have used "Restorator 2007 to change icons and backgrounds before, so any advice would be helpful heres a screen shot:

Answer:How to change left pane BG in start menu and all folders

Welcome to the Seven Forums

It looks like you are using a third-party custom theme post a link to it and I can give you the image number for the left side of the start menu.
The backgrounds for the Windows Explorer on the left side and the main window are fill colors and the only way I know how to change that is to use Ave's Windows7 Style Builder

The left side of the control panel are Bitmaps #632 and 633 in the shell32.dll in both C:\Windows\System32 and C:\Windows\SysWOW64 after editing(put copies on your desktop and edit them did not get them mixed up) you will need to properly change a system file you need to take ownership give yourself permission and rename the old file and then copy in the new one look at Post #6 of this thread will tell you how to do it Basic Networking Information

In Windows Seven if I right click in Explorer left pane Favorites I can then press 'e' to open that folder in a new window. In Vista, I have to press 'o'. Being right handed and wanting to use the mouse, now I have to reach across with my left hand to press the 'o' key.

Is there no way to change the underline/shortcut/accelerator whatever they call it key in the context menu? I see no way to do it. I look in the Registry and I don't see any "&" in front of any of the letters. But the short cut letter is there just the same. There must be a way to change it.

All I've been able to find is turn the display of underline on and off. No info how to change the letter itself.

I would like to let you know that this option is not present in Windows Vista as it a design issue.

Just left-click "Open in new window" from the right-click menu. No need to use the keyboard at all for that. Using the mouse buttons is quicker anyway (at least it should be if you already have the mouse under your hand).

So with a bit of tinkering I figured out how to change the default folders on the start menu navigation pane, but now that I have the proper 'Downloads' folder that I wanted I'm completely stumped on how to get rid of the first one I created (the one with the small arrow next to it.) Any tips on how I could remove this?

Answer:How do i remove shortcuts from the start menu navigation pane

Hello Ben, and welcome to Seven Forums.

You can go to your customize Start Menu settings in the tutorial below to add or remove these shortcut buttons, and to have them either display as a menu or link. Unchecking Documents should remove it.

is this possible?
I currently have things like Favourites, Libraries, and Homegroup (all of which I don't care for). Not sure what that folder pane is actually called, so not sure what to search for.
I just want an expanded folder tree of My Computer.

Any suggestions?
thanks

I'm not sure why one would do this. Right click on what ever you don't want and select delete. Be very sure you want to do this. Those things do no harm being there.

Hello everybody!

First time poster here. I was wondering if there is a registry tweak or something to remove the left side bar (which says "Windows XP Professional") completely? The bar is not visible when "Show Small Icons in Start Menu" is selected but I want the text to be at their default size and still not have the bar on the left.

The reason why I want to do this is I only have Programs, Settings, Run and Shutdown (I removed the rest because I don't use them) in my Start Menu and the side bar is all black because there is not enough room to display "Windows XP Professional". This is by design I guess.

So I want to remove the black side bar and still maintain the default size of text. Hope I am making sense. :)

Thank you!

I reinstalled Windows XP. For some reason, all of my old programs show up in Windows Explorer, but not in the Start Menu or in Control Panel/Add Remove Programs. Is there a way to fix this?

Thanks for any help.

Answer:Programs Not Listed in Start Menu Or Add/Remove Programs

Hey, i assume when you re-installed XP you attempted to keep your programs?

When re-installing XP i believe the registry is re-written, which would account for them being missing from the Add/Remove programs panel.

As for the start menu, star menu entries can be found in these two directories:

Code:
C:/Documents and Settings/All Users/Start Menu
C:/Documents and Settings/[Your Username]/Start Menu
i'm assuming they've been re-written too, if the programs still run then all you need to do is drag a shortcut to the main EXE into one of them folders, if they don't i suggest you re-install them.

Could you clarify how you re-installed XP? did you choose some non-destructive re-install(in order to keep your programs)?

Cheers,
Jamey

A while back I attempted to remove a number of unneeded programs via CONTROL PANEL/ADD DELETE PROGRAMS to free up disc space (I am am 85% full with XP Home and only 80GB). After deleting several of them (successfully it appeared) I did a system restore (for a separate issue) and it didn't "take", the system locked up, the restore wasn't successful and I had to do a hard reboot. System restore has worked fine since then however.

PROBLEM: After this happened the deleted programs still show on the program list and still have files/folders left over on the C drive but I am unable to remove them "again", I get an error mssg or nothing at all happens or the PC hangs and I have to close the control panel or possibly even restart. One of the programs now shows it's size as 8500MB (which it obviously isn't)(others that were unsuccessfully deleted show no size in MB at all). I have tried uninstalling from the TOOLS tab in CCleaner as well with no luck. Any ideas on how to COMPLETELY/PROPERLY delete these programs and remove them from the program list without leaving behind a bunch of clutter/errors, other than manually removing them from the PROGRAM FILES folder (which I assume would still leave traces in other locations and registry errors)?

Thanks for any help

Answer:programs left behind from ADD/REMOVE PROGRAMS

I would try Revo Uninstaller. Here is how to use Revo Uninstaller:1) First we download it from here: Revo Uninstaller Free Version. You can skip this Step if you already have it installed. However, you may need to update it. If you have it installed already, and you need to update it, go ahead and open it up and click the AutoUpdate Icon next to Help. The use of this program makes registry changes based upon what you select for removal from the Registry. Before running Revo Uninstaller please run ERUNT before proceeding to back up your registry in case you make a mistake.2) Select the Program to remove from the list of programs and click the Uninstall button: 3) After selecting the program you want to remove, and confirming you want to uninstall the program, then you will want to select the Advanced Option: 4) Click Next. This will start the uninstaller for the application you picked. When the uninstaller is done, and it proves to be successful, and a reboot is required, then select NO and continue the below steps.5) Follow the prompts during the uninstallation of the application. Once it closes you will be at this window: 6) Click Next again. Once the window is done scanning for files and other things that did not get removed, you will be presented with this window: . You will want to select only the bolded items, then click on Delete. If any entries-usually the last thing listed and not in bold-have a + sign click on the + until you see more bolded items. Well, that's new - the normal request is 'how do I add things to the Start?'

No, not in the registry. There are actually two folders that are combined to make that list: one for All Users and a personal one for each user. You can customise both. This Tutorial tells you how.

First of all: I am by no means a technical genius (Google got me this far) and my technical lingo/knowledge is limited. In other words ... if suggested solutions to my problem were to be posted in a not-too-technical language and thoroughly explained, you'd make me very happy. My troubles originated when I got a virus on my PC: SMART HDD, a rogue scanner.Google led me to this guide (http://www.myantispyware.com/2010/12/14/how-to-remove-smart-hdd-and-smarthdd-virus/) to manually removing the virus and I followed the first 6 steps without encountering any problems.Step 7 is where I first encountered one of my current problems:"7: Now you can unhide all files and folders that has been hidden by Smart HDD. Hello, can anybody tell me how to delete program entries from a specific user start menu?

PC's have multiple user accounts, for designers and administrators within the business. Designers do not need access to Sage Accounts so I want to remove it from their start menus and administrators do not need access to dreamweaver and thus I want to remove it from their start menu.

How can I overcome this problem?

Many thanks in advance.

If I understand correctly, you can right click and pin to start menu. Once pinned it should be there for individual accounts and not be changed.

In another post someone asked the question: How to permanently remove/ban programs from the Start Menu Recent List? (Since manually deleting them will only get them back on once the program is started again.) The sole answer gave a suggestion to "switch the feature off". This answer though useful to some is not to me. Those programs which are indeed often used are on the desktop via a shortcut. Those on the start menu, are programs not often used or perhaps only used this week, then not used for 2 months, then used again later once. Therefore, as the reader suggested, to then, after turning the feature off and"add links to the programs you do want there manually" doesn't do it since I may not want them there 'next week' nor do I like the idea of me having to manually add them and manually remove them all the time. In Windows XP there used to be a little Microsoft program called TweakUI (Power Toys) that would do exactly that--controlled which programs could go there and which could not. Considering that TweakUi was originally made for the 1st or 2nd Windows version (before Windows 95) I hesitate to use it again for Windows 7. Does anyone have a suggestion?

Answer:How to permanently remove programs from the Start Menu

You may find this Microsoft Answers forum thread interesting. One possible solution was:

Quote:
Click the Start button , Control Panel, Personalization, and then Taskbar and Start Menu. Click the Start Menu tab and uncheck the boxes under the Privacy section.

If you do want certain programs to show up on your Start Menu, just right-click on them and choose 'Pin to Start Menu'

Then a Microsoft MVP forum moderator added:

Quote:
This is more of a sledgehammer procedure, since it disables the recent items on the entire system, including the Start Menu and Taskbar Jumplists.

Myself & others have been looking into the possibility of adding Uninstall Program to the context menu when right clicking items on the desktop. This will run the selected applications uninstall program without having to use control panel.

Below you will find links to 'Uninstall_app.reg' & 'Remove_uninstall_app.reg' which will add new keys to the registry which will run the 'Uninstall a program' control panel app to the centext menu.

Registry keys added are:

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\exefile\shell\Uninstall]
@="Uninstall Programs"
"NoWorkingDirectory"=""

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\exefile\shell\Uninstall\command]
@="rundll32.exe shell32.dll,Control_RunDLL appwiz.cpl"

Currently this will only add Uninstall Programs to the context menu and will run the 'Add/Remove programs' application. As of yet it will not uninstall the selected application but that is a work in progress.

If any1 has any ideas then the help would be great.

The Currently installed programs list in the Add or Remove Programs tool lists all of the Windows-compatible programs that have an uninstall program or feature. Occasionally, a program may not be removed completely, and the registry key that is used to display the program in the Currently installed programs list remains. In this situation, you may need to manually remove the program from the Currently installed programs list in Add or Remove Programs. To do this, follow these steps.

Important This section, method, or task contains steps that tell you how to modify the registry. However, serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly. Therefore, make sure that you follow these steps carefully. For added protection, back up the registry before you modify it. Then, you can restore the registry if a problem occurs. For more information about how to back up and restore the registry, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

hello...
I can not remove programs from the start menu using the start/settings/taskbar option. If i do, it seems like the coputer goes into a partial reboot and removes items from the tray. Also upon startup I get two messages that says something like it can not remove a program because it cant find a component, do i still want to remove the program? So i check no. Another message is that it can't find a driver, etc etc. I have run a hijackthis and the following is a log file. I can also run a dr watson, but I do not know how to save the log from that. If someone can advise, I can include it with a reply. Any help will be much appreciated, and thanks in advance for the assistance. Fwed

I'm not exactly sure what you're asking...you can't remove programs that start when windows starts? Or are you trying to remove programs from the taskbar, or from All Programs? Or are you trying to remove programs that appear on the left pane after you press the start button? I don't see anything in your Hijack scan to worry about...please clarify...

Hi. I have encountered some sort of virus that i can't seem to get ride of. When I got to add/remove programs there is a strange file named with symbols. If I remvoe it it just comes back. I was able to run spybot and ad-aware but the problems that it deletes just comes back. My symantec software was unable to open because it said it was in use by another program, but I was finally able to run it by changing the file name. I found many infections and quarantined them, but my main problem is still present. If anyone can help me that would be GREAT!!!Here is my hijackthis log. My start menu will not let me right-click any link such as "Computer" and it will not let me remove any program from the start list. Again, because it wont let me right-click it.

Answer:Start menu not letting me right click or remove programs?

This is normally due to a setting in the Start Menu that's called "Enable context menus and dragging and dropping". Here's what to do:
Right-click a neutral place on the Start Menu (or just right-click the Start Menu orb) and choose "Properties"
Click the button labeled "Customize..."
Scroll down just a little bit to find "Enable context menus and dragging and dropping"
Click this setting to enable it
Click OK
Click OK
After this, you should be able to right-click. If this option was already enabled, then we'll go from there and try to figure it out.

On my laptop with XP-PRO SP2 installed I can rename a file or folder in both the left and right explorer panes by slowly left clicking twice on the file or folder name (not the icon). I really like not having to right click and select rename from the context menu. However, I am unable to rename files and folders in the left explorer pane on either of my two desktop PCs, one with XP-PRO SP2 installed, the other with XP-PRO SP3 installed. Is there a Registry modification or a setting somewhere I could change on my two desktops to allow me to rename in the left pane by clicking the name twice. I am comfortable making Registry modifications and I am careful to make backups of the Registry keys and values before changing them. I have searched the internet using Google but have been unable to find the answer. I would greatly appreciate any information on this subject. Thanks.

Answer:Renaming by two clicks in Left Pane

Just to give my thoughts ---I find that such things annoying. My guess is that such things may be related to whatever the Double Click Speed settings are, in Mouse Properties.

Hello guys. wish you all have a good day.

1. Yesterday my friend did something to my system (although he denies it) resulting a corrupted system folder. I tried to repair it using window's recovery console but it didn't help much.

2. So I reinstalled windows xp on the same drive and folder (overwrite). Resulting a great 'lost' of previous profile settings.

3. I managed to restore 'My documents' files from the previous user account folder (Documents and Settings/USER) to a new account folder (Documents and Settings/USER.ZAKI) and redirect the link of My Documents to the old one (C:\Documents and Settings\USER\My Documents).

4. THE PROBLEMS are, most of my previous installed softwares are not properly functioning now. Mostly give an error stating "blabla not properly installed". And also, all that previously installed softwares are not listed in the Add/Remove Programs!

5. What I want to know are,
i) Is there a way to reset the system and re-guide it to use the previous account setting to the state before it was reinstalled (USER)? I want the Add/Remove to recognize all the previous installed programs.
ii) How to properly redirect the 'Start Menu' to list down the programs list of 'All User'? Mine are now almost empty making it looks like no program is being installed.

Please help me. Hope my post can help others having the same problem as me to gather what they need to know (it's hard t... Read more

Hello all

Here's my problem: I'm running windows xp and went into the system configuration utility to remove quicktime from the start up menu. When I try to remove it I get this error

"An access denied error was returned while attempting to change a service. You may need to log on using an Administrator account to make the specified changes."

The problem is that I'm already logged on using the Administrator account.

I've never had any problem with removing things from the startup menu before. I installed SP2 about 3 months ago and had no problems removing programs before I installed it.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Edit: Also wanted to add that when the error message comes up I hit ok and restart my computer that quicktime is no longer on my start up menu. But if I wait a day or two it'll be back on there.

Yes Angie, that's happened to me as well with Quicktime. Quite annoying if you ask me. I had to restore a True Image backup I had made before installing the program. I didn't like Quicktime 4 years ago when I tried it and I still don't like it for this exact reason.

Windows 7 has apparently lost the ability to rename a folder in Explorer's left-hand (Navigation) pane by left-clicking a highlighted folder a 2nd time.

I know I can use F2 or right-click< Rename, or even rename in the right-hand pane, but I'm so used to doing it it the left-hand pane that I keep forgetting and trying to do it.

So is this intentional or is it a bug? I'd like to know so I can report/request it for a future SR. Although I have a feeling it's supposed to be this way and I'm wasting my time. Still.... it's always worth a try.

Answer:Rename folders in left pane - feature or bug?

Mac,

I think it's intentional. You can see the full options if you right-click on any folder at the left pane of Windows Explorer, so i think it's not bug.

Microsoft is not careless on that case.

Thank's.

Hi:
I have a terrific HP Laptop which I purchased back in 2007 or 2008 and I rarely use it until last month, probably only once or twice a week with only a few hours.

Recently, I started to use HP Laptop on daily basis and found 'Search' at the left side of the pane/screen is missing/lost when clicking on 'Search' at the top. 'Search' at the address bar is perfectly OK tho'.

Is this issue related to not use it for a while, .... or how did it disappear?

Only seen is 'Google' ad. popping up upon clicking at 'Search' on the tool-bar of the top.

How can I rescue 'Search' at the left pane of screen?

Thanks for any help in advance.

Answer:Missing 'Search' at the left pane of the screen

Are you talking about Windows Explorer, Internet Explorer or what?

Do you mean the "Search" option is missing when you (for example) right-click on your "C:" drive?

If I expand a folder that's down towards the bottom and there's a lot of subfolders, then everything moves up to make room for the subfolder list. That's as it should be. But about the time I go to click on one of the subfolders, the whole list moves down again and you have to scroll back down to get where you want. After that, it stays put. It's an bug/annoyance that I hope someone gets fixed.
Just my 2 cents worth.

I can get Windows Explorer to open to a specific folder in the Right Pane, but it only shows the "Computer" or "C:" level in the Left pane. I have tried pinning the folder to "Start", and have also tried various switches (n, e, select) as the target in Explorer.

Attached is an example where a shortcut in Start opens TechInfo in the right panel, but not the left.

Is there any way to open the folder in the left pane also? It's a minor issue, but a pain!

TIA.

I just reformated my hard drive and reloaded XP Home. The problem I'm having, is that when I open Windows Explorer, (not Internet Explorer) the left pane (tree) does not cascade automatic to show all the folders. It just shows Documents, My Computer and the + sign beside each one to expand to the folders. It used to do this automatically in the past. I've tried all the view options on the tool bars, all property settings and nothing works. I'm running active desktop like I always do. Any ideas?

Hi,

i love the new left side pane in folder view, but i cannot seem to get it to show 'Desktop'

id like to place it where the red line is

[also, can you change the icons for 'libraries' ]

Answer:Customize the left hand folder pane?

Hi al4x,

The closest I got with adding the desktop icon to the side pane is you can add the desktop Icon by clicking the Favorites arrow.(it might be already there). If you don't have any favorites or the arrow is not there you can add the Desktop Icon to it by Clicking and holding the icon and drag it to the favorites tab..

I have not been able to figure out if you can just add an icon anywhere in the side pane my guess in no..

And I have not found a way to change the icons for the libraries..(I don't think you can)

Hope this Helps..

This is driving me nuts, the left pane items auto expand randomly to show all the drivers in Computer for example.

I then collapse them again, but after a while they expand again.

How can I stop them from ever expanding?

I'm not sure what's causing this as on a fresh install this doesn't happen, I have a feeling when I install qBittorrent, after a file is downloaded for example and I double click on it to show it in its downloaded folder, that's when the left pane items auto expand

Somehow the left pane with the list of email file folders got moved to the bottom of the page. So the right pane containing the messages is a full screen left to right, and the file folders are way at the bottom only showing the first two folders and then having the scroll bar off to the right.
How do you get the left folder pane back into position with the right message pane next to it.
Once again, the messages pane are on top of the folder pane.
How can I move the folders back where they belong.
Thank you, Dynalady

Hi everyone:

How can I open explorer to a particular left pane file? I want to open to: Libraries, Documents, My documents (with the files showing underneath my doucments). I have been able to open to: user, my documents, but I would rather open to the libraries file structure - it looks cleaner.

Thanks, in advance.

Starting about three days ago, when I open a new doc in WORD, in all but the WEB LAYOUT VIEW there is a pane on the left side of the blank document that has a rectangle at the top and a number 1 next to it. How can I get rid of that pane?

Answer:Explorer.exe Left Pane Folder Tree

I had a look at your problem just after you posted eary this morning. Was not sure that i understood what is going on.Thought you had got your Windows Explorer.exe confused with internet explorer.exe.I also considered you had poss a bad update of IE5 as it appears to only have one choice in the add/remove programs for it.Considered at some stage you may have had a virus, but you don't mention anything about a virus scan or any error messages.I would suggest that your problem is wide spread through-out your pc and i think you have issues with your registry and corrupt files within the windows installation."I could also be very wrong" You could go for a quick re-install of windows 98 over itself and see if that cures the problem. It may give you a chance to keep all software programs that are installed and running properly,if that be the case.If it was me, i would not hesitate to reformat and do a repeat clean install of windows.Unless someone can come up with a better idea.

Currently my setup (corporate network) uses the setting:
User Configuration\AdministrativeTemplates\Start Menu & Taskbar\Remove common program groups from Start Menu
As its a multiple user environment we don't want all users seeing all available applications on the server their accessing (Citrix XenApp environment). We use AppSense to manage shortcuts.
As a result of using this GPO setting, users Recent Programs on the Start Menu no longer show. That's the ability for the user click on Notepad, it appears on the Start Menu and retains on logoff.
Is it possible to enable recent programs only, or a manual tweak or setting a registry key for recent programs only, without disabling "Remove common program groups from Start Menu"

My problem is how the left window reacts when I select a folder.

If I have a long list of folders in the left window and I click on the small arrow to the left of a folder, it is supposed to show the list of sub-folders that are in the selected folder.

It does but here is my problem. Lets say the folder that I select is in the middle of the left window. When I click on the small arrow, Windows Explorer shifts the folder list down so that the selected folder is near the bottom of the window. Generally I can only see one of the sub-folders. And then I have to use the slider to move the selected folder up so I can see more than one sub-folder.

I wish it would leave the folder where it was and show as many sub-folders as possible underneath the selected folder. I hope this explanation makes sense.

Answer:The Navigation Pane on the left side of Windows Explorer

I tried it on my Computer and the on clicking the arrow it moves up as it should instead of going down. Please try out the following steps to correct the problem.

1. Restore the folder to default as follows and check if that helped:

a. Open windows explorer
b. Click on Organize
c. Select folder and search option from the list
d. Select General tab, and select “Restore Default”

2. Run an online scanner to check any malware or virus activity. The link that will help you to run a free scan on the computer is Windows Live OneCare

3. If the above steps do not help then run the SFC (System File Checker) scan on the computer to fix the system file errors on the computer. To run SFC scan, follow the steps below:

a. Click Start ,
b. Click All Programs ,
c. Click Accessories , right-click Command Prompt ,
d. And then click Run as administrator.
e. If you are prompted for an administrator password or for a confirmation, type the password, or click Allow or Continue.
f. At the prompt, type sfc /scannow and hit enter. Once the scan is complete, restart the computer for the changes to take effect.

Please tell if this was of any use.

This is something that's been bothering me since I upgraded this Dell XPS8700 to windows 10 some two weeks or more ago.

The left pane in File Explorer seems to duplicate my drive letters and info other than what's under the entry "This PC".

If I look down the list, starting just below the Libraries folder, the drive letters are repeated but not all of them.

Like I have under This PC : C: , DVDRW D:, E:, F: , a card reader, H,L,K, external drives L:, another card reader letter M:, a second external drive N:, followed by some NAS folders I have mapped, V, W, X. and Y.

Down past the Libraries folder are again: H, L, N, M, K, and I, then Network etc, Homegroup etc.

Hard to describe, I could do a screen shot and post it if that would help see it.

How and why are all these drive letters getting into this tree twice? Anyone?

TIA - Gene

Hi Guys!
Sorry if this was posted already, really busy!

Well this is my problem...i have a couple of pcs with windows xp, and i want to disable the windows explorer view, like explore all users by right clicking on the start menu orb. Or simply as when opening the file explorer, never having the left pane with the file list tree, so that no program can activate this view...

I have older people working in this company and sometimes they just dont let go of the left click on the mouse, making them moving files they are not supposed to.

We use a access database that views its contents (like docs, pics, gifs) always with this left pane with tree listing of all the folders...

I would be gratefull for this solution...

My pc motherboard was replaced a couple of weeks ago and when the engineer reinstalled windows me the left side of the explorer window remained greyed out.(It will show history and favourites, search, etc when selected).Although its only niggly I would prefer to see the folders on the left and the contents of these folders in the right pane.I have tried changing folder options to reflect the other pc I have access to but this has not resolved the problem.I don't want to reinstall windows with my original copy as I beleive it will uninstall all the hours of windows updated that I have done since.Has anyone got any ideas? Thanks

Answer:Explorer not showing me the left hand tree pane

If you are running XP there should be a button labelled "Folders" to the right of the "Search" button at the top of the window (when "viewed as a web page") Click this and the panel should appear with the folders in it.

Whenever explorer opens, I can never find the folders I want easily. Therefore, I put them in the Favorites part of the navigation pane. However, still, when I open explorer, the left pane goes somewhere so low down that I can't even see my the favorites folder. Every single time I have to scroll all the way up to the top to find basic things like "Desktop." Is there ANY WAY to be able to always have the favorites bar showing on the left? To never have it disappear, no matter what folder in the tree Windows has opened? This was fine in XP. Its just AWFUL in windows 7. Takes time and is totally frustrating, and there seems to be no way to fix it as far as I have researched? Can anyone help me fix this?

On a side note, which is not nearly as important as my issue above, (because this one frustrated me to the point of no longer caring), is there any way to have the desktop fill up the space of a removed icon, but yet not reorganize the entire screen to where the last organization of your files is totally reorganized the next time you check? I want to be able to save things to the desktop and always have them come up AFTER everything else on the desktop. I want them to stay there, in that order when I shut down the computer, if I move something, I want all the files in front of that thing I moved to move back one space. What I do not want is "holes" in icon locations on my desktop, and I don't want the desktop to be reorganizing itself when I select automat... Read more

Answer:Explorer Left Pane -> Navigate to Favorites Automatically

Go to your navigation pane. Click on favorites. now right click on a blank space in the pane. Select "Expand to current folder".

Once the pane has expanded to favorites, right click again on an empty space in the pane and uncheck the box "Expand to Current Folder". Explorer should now automatically open at that location.

I have a situation where when using Windows Explorer the left pane that usually contains you main hierarchy is Gray and blank. I have looked at everything thoroughly and cannot figure out how it happened or how to get the information back. If I click on the folder button on the tool bar the whole pane will close and click again and the pane appears but is empty. Has anyone run into this issue using Windows 2000. I did some looking in Microsoft knowledge base but they were talking about Win98 and not Windows 2000 and they were talking about Internet explorer and this is happening in Windows Explorer any help with this would be much appreciated.

Hi. My problem is slightly different but along the same lines? When I open Explorer, Favorites is displayed at the top of the left column, as desired. However, not all of the folders I have designated for Favoriates is displayed in the left column. When I left click on the word "Favorites," then in the right column the entire list of Favorites folders does display. (Meaning: there's a list of nine folders on the right side, but back in the left column under Favorites only seven are displayed.)

I've tried all of the solutions described above and none fixes this problem. If I try to drag a folder from Right to Left, two things happen: (A) A copy of that folder is created on the right side (so I'll see the original and a version with "(2)" after the name; and (B) on the left side, one of the folders that used to be in Favorites no longer displays.

I don't know why a copy is made on the Right, but the action on the Left leads me to believe that somehow the left column Favorites is set to display no more than seven (7) items, but I can't find where to change that setting.

ANy ideas out there?

Answer:Favorites in left pane does not display all Favorite folders

Hello Kell, and welcome to Seven Forums.

As a test, open your C:\Users\(user-name)\Links folder, and see what you have for shortcuts there. If they are all there, then cut and paste them to your desktop to empty the folder, then copy them back to see if they appear in the navigation pane under Favorites afterwards.

If that doesn't help, then try the tutorial below along with the yellow TIP box if needed.

Hello,

I just noticed Win Explorer does not refresh the right pane as I navigate up/down a list of folders via arrow keys in the left pane. It used to make rapid visual read of folder contents possible. Can that feature be switched back on?

I've seen this reported elsewhere few years ago but I cannot find it on this site.

Answer:Windows Explorer right pane does not match left folder

Not sure if that's possible. Use the up or down button until you have highlighted the one you want. Then press Enter or Space to update the pane to the right. You use the left and right buttons to collapse/expand sub folders.

I find Space the best and fastest option since you use both hands. One to navigate and the other to refresh the right pane.

I am very new to the PC world, trying to find my way around and running XP. During this learning process I somehow lost the Windows Explorer Default Pane to the Left of the window (it used to show System Tasks/Other Places/Details in separate panels).I can still get Search and Folders by pressing the buttons in the tool bar but when both are de-selected I only have a large window with no sign of the original panel. Please can someone tell me if it is possible to recover this information as I found it very helpful. If so can you also tell me how to do it in simple terms. Many thanks.

Open any Explorer window, select Tools from the top of the window, select Folder Options. Under the first heading (Tasks) make sure "Show Common Tasks In Folders" is selected, if not left click it. Click OK.

My computer has been having some problems lately and I really do not know what is going on.

I'm running a 2008 Toshiba laptop and about a month ago I started noticing that my cursor would randomly turn into a rainbow? this was the first problem I couldn't figure out, even going through forums and forums. Then I started noticing that every other website was being redirected to random spyware websites, even in the middle of viewing a website for over 3-4 minutes it could just randomly redirect me.

Finally, the most annoying thing of all has happened and I can't find ANYTHING about it; when I plug in my mouse everything works fine, but then i notice if i left click it'll open the property pane and also create a highlighted box.. basically any time i click anything, it acts as if i'm pressing the right click 5 times for every left click. This makes it very very difficult to click on links, play games, or virtually use my lap top at all. I have noticed something though, I swapped out my mouse for another and still had the same problem, BUT my touchpad doesn't have any of the problems above?? is it the driver for my USB mouse malfunctioning?
If you want the shorter version of that: My mouse changes into a rainbow randomly, i'm constantly redirected to websites for no reason, and my mouse will not stop spamming right click even when I left click but my touchpad doesn't have problems.

When Windows Explorer is open, if I right-click on anything in the left-pane, Explorer crashes and re-starts.

I've googled, and tried using NirSoft's ShellFix, disabled the most common issues googling resulted in:
#1 Remove Nvidia context-menu and for desktop right-click.
#2 Remove Spybot Search & Destroy context-menu.
#3 Remove Nvidia "nvshext.dll" (not found after using ShellFix)

None of these resulted in a fix at all. I've tried booting in safe mode, the same problem exists. I can right-click on file and folders in the right pane of Explorer, but right-clicking in the left pane, whether folder or drive. Explorer still crashes.

I found a Microsoft page regarding a similar issue, and to be on the safe side, I tried that. Still doing the same thing.

This is really driving me crazy, since I use portable backup drives to re-install my games onto the system but it's pretty hard to drag and drop when you can't have a second Explorer pane open.

Anyone have any ideas?

Here I can see my gmail and comcast accounts and if desired, expand the folder list for each account. I recently added a new Yahoo pop3 account but for some reason it doesn't appear there.
