Preferred Solution: Type of file is NTFS Cannot lock current driv

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Type of file is NTFS Cannot lock current driv

Hello

In Windows 7 and Windows 8, you can find out where your current desktop background wallpaper is located e.g. in my win8, my desktop background is stored here

C:\Users\Jason\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Themes\TranscodedWallpaper
In Windows 7 (or here), the lock screen similarly had a path

%windir%\System32\oobe\info\backgrounds\backgroundDefault.jpg

(which is activated after a little reg tweek (see links)). If that jpg was changed, the lock screen image changed.
Now (!), does anyone know if there is a similar path for the windows 8 lock screen?

Answer:Current Lock screen file path

Hello Jason,

If you like, the tutorial below will show you how to change the lock screen background image for your user account.
Lock Screen - Background Image - Change in Windows 8
...or set a default Lock screen for all users.

Hope this helps,

Every time I try to start up my new HP laptop with windows 7 I receive this
message that the computer is checking file on C drive. The file being NTFS.
It says it is recommeded and if I press any key in 10 seconds it will stop (which it wont) because I tried that. So I powered down and restarted and it timed out and when I tried to start it again it is sending this message again.
What do I do?

Answer:checking file on C: type file NTFS

let the disk check run when you boot your lap top. It may take a while to run but the pc or in your case laptop had detected a problem or it was schedualed when your lap top was last used. After it runs your pc should boot normaly.

It would be great if HP included some instructions in their update section to walk us through, step by step, how to install a new driver when the previous one must first be uninstalled. Most updates are just click and download. Nothing else required.  But some of us aren't all that comfortable uninstalling drivers and don't know where to begin.

Answer:Intel Bluetooth Driver update--how to uninstall current driv...

Hi, Thank you for posting. You should not uninstall previous driver prior to updating new one. In Windows 10 you can install updates via Windows Update or Device Manager (preffered method). Here is how >> http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c03330139 For non-critical, not so important and other updates, you can also use HP Support Assistant (HPSA) >> http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c03467905In HPSA, please skip BIOS/UEFI updates.  Hope this helps. I'm seeing BSODs of all sorts, at random times and with no discernible pattern. They come at startup, when playing battlefield 3, playing music, browsing the internet. They seemed to have started after i tried moving my battlefield 3 files from my Intel 520 SSD to another HDD. Now I can't figure out how to get them to stop.

My three most recent dump files are attached.

Answer:BSODs of just about every type: pool header, NTFS file system, etc

What did you use to run diagnostics on the SSD? Also, it's been a while since you posted this. Are things still stable with the removed stick of RAM?

The crashdumps themselves are inconclusive. I'm not able to ascertain nor suspect anything with them. More accurate crashdumps can be made if you turn on Driver Verifier and let that crash your system a few times.

As for the SSD drive, have you updated its firmware, and have you also updated the BIOS and chipset drivers for your motherboard? All three of these have the potential to cause instability with an SSD installed due to compatibility issues. Make sure they're taken care of.

Hi Everyone,

Randomly, my lap top running Windows Vista, on boot  up started saying "Checking file system on C: The type of the files system is NTFS. Volume label is S3A6688D007". It then advises me to allow a disk check for consistency. It runs through the check, deletes a bunch of files and then recovers and restarts. Once Windows boots I usually either cannot click on any icons in the tool bar or desk top and a lot of times I loose any mouse or keyboard response, resulting in having to shut down via the power button. I have ran through the process multiple times over the last few weeks and am making no head way what so ever. Can anyone offer me some advise as to what I should do to fix this issue? Thanks!

Answer:Checking File System on C: The type of the file system is NTFS

It sounds like you have some corruption in some of your Windows files. As a first step run SFC then Chkdsk.

To run SFC click 'Start - All programs - Accessories' then RIGHT click on 'Command prompt' and select 'Run as administrator from the pop-up menu that appears. You will get a black window with white text and a blinking underscore at the end of the text. Then type 'sfc /scannow' (without the ' ', and note the space between 'sfc' and '/scannow') then press the enter key. The system will now scan for corrupted files and attempt to repair them. Let it run until it has finished - this can take up to an hour depending on your system - then re-boot and see if you still have the problem.

If you do, run 'chkdsk /r'. Start off exactly as above but type 'chkdsk /r' at the prompt (again, no ' ' and note the space before the '/'). You will get a message saying it cannot run but will at next boot. Re-boot the computer and let it run. Yes, this is very similar to what your computer is doing at the moment but the '/r' instructs the computer to try to repair any problems. When it finishes it will probably re-boot, if it doesn't, re-boot anyway.

Hopefully this will fix the problem. If it doesn't post back.

Checking file system on C: The type of the file system is NTFS. One of your disk needs to be checked for consistency. You can cancel the disk check, but it is strongly recommended that you continue. To skip disk checking, press any key within(10)seconds.

It then says the disck can not be checked due to recently installed software. The thing is I haven't installed anything in 3 months.

I manage to get on to the computer and it is extremely slow, I managed to get it working fast enough to get my university work off of it but it has gone back to being very slow, often freezing.

I have tried starting it in safe mode and and a list of disks come up and it never gets past this point.
I just started it up and it managed to let me into system repair. It is now attempting repairs. Does any one know how long this will take and whether or not it works?
I think I may need to take it in to a repair store.
Would appreciate any help.
Thank you.

I am setting up a Win7 install using a 'scratch disk which formatted and has the operating system.

My media files are on older XP machine. The file transfer should be speedy on the
same computer but it is very slow.

Is there an instruction needed to 'pass through' more efficiently?

Example: 1 Gb file is taking 16 minutes or longer and a simple program folder of a small program will take 4 mins. It seems to be crawling.

Is there some difference between NTFS on XP and Win7?

If I have overlooked a previous answer, apologies.

Answer:Move an XP file in NTFS to Win7 NTFS is very slowed down on computer

What is the transfer medium? A network? Null cable? You don'tgive enough info to tell what you are doing other than that you are copying from XP to W7.

Hello,
I originally posted about my internet dropping when I connected my Win 7 PC to the network. Original post here: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/568833/internet-dropping-when-win-7-pc-is-connected-to-network/

I was asked to complete the prep guide and repost, and I did every step, but the CHKDSK step was not completed due to an error message in command prompt: Cannot lock current drive. Chkdsk cannot run because the volume is in use by another process. Would you like to schedule this volume to be checked the next time the system restarts?

I restarted (into safe mode) and it gave me the same result. I tried chkdsk /f and chkdsk /r.

My internet issues still persist. Can you help me?

My PC is a Windows 10 with 2 internal drives (C:, H:) and 2 external drives (D:, F:, G:). I have various shares setup across all the drives so I can access them remotely on our home network.

From my Android 7, using ES File Explore, I can access shares on D:, F: and G: but not H:. I eventually found a security error so I backed up the files to another external drive, reformatted drive H: and restored files. I then recreated the 3 shares.

The problem only exists when trying to access these shares from ES File Explorer on my Android 7.

I get the error message:

Login fails
This may be caused by:
- WLAN is off
- SMB server is out of network space
- The IP is invalid
- Blocked by the firewall
- SMB service is off

Since I am able to access all the other shared directories I know it is specific to just this one internal hard drive. I have no problems when I use any other Windows 10 device on our LAN or even my old iPhone (which I use like a tablet and not a phone).

I have been struggling with this problem for a VERY long time and am utterly frustrated. I really hope someone can help me.

I have an older thinkpad T40 type 2374 running windows XP that has a 40 gb hard drive. I would like to get a new drive and replace the old drive (and use the old drive as a back up). I believe that the hard drive is a PATA drive which are hard to find and appear more costly than a sata hd. Are there any limitations as to size of the hard drive that I should follow for my T40 and any HDs to avoid purchasing? I was looking at the WD1200beve 120 GB drive and the samsung HM160HC 160 GB drives (these seem to be readily available). Hello everyone

I would like to edit the file type descriptions of a number of file types on my computer. I mean the text that is written in the "File Type" column. For example, after installing Opera browser, all HTML and HTM files have the "File Type" of "Opera Web Document", but I would like to change the File Type for HTML files to "HTML file" and for HTM files to "HTM file".

In Windows 7 I used a utility called Default Programs Editor, but that utility doesn't quite work on Windows 10 anymore. I have some file types here that do not show up in the list of registered file types, which I want to change. For example, I have WSXZ files which are opened by a program called SDL, and the "File Type" according to Windows 10 is "SDL WSXZ Document", but I would like to change that to "WSXZ Forward Package File".

How can I do this? Is there an easy way to do it?

Thanks
Samuel

Answer:How to change "File type" (aka file type description) of files

Hi you could try Gunners File Type Editor. It appears to be able to do this, but I've not specifically tried.

You might wish to retry Default Programs Editor, but run it as admin.

Note that doing this might prove a waste of time in Win 10, as MS as you may know has introduced a new type of update which is very similar to reinstalling Windows (as in the TH2 10586 November update/upgrade.

Or you could use e.g. FileTypesMan (Nirsoft) and use that to open regedit at the right place as a convenience.

During a TrendMicro virus scan, it found an archive that was infected. A quick check of the archive (Which I'd grabbed months before, but never ran) showed it was actually an application, so I went to shift+del the file (No sense dumping a virus into the recycle bin), and poof it's gone.

Then I went to delete the folder it was in, but... it wouldn't let me. Told me I didn't have the permissions to do so. A quick check of the folder's contents revealed the virus/app was back, as if it had never been deleted.

If I try doing a regular delete, it tells me Destination Folder Access Denied.

So I started poking around the file's security properties.
"Unable to display current owner."

I tried changing the owner, but it wouldn't let me do that.
I downloaded Unlocker, right-clicked on the file and unlocked it, but nothing seemed to happen, and same results when I try to delete it.

I'm running Vista 32-bit, not connected to a local network (Just one computer), and I'd really like to delete this virus/app off my machine. TrendMicro was unable to get rid of it, and I can't seem to get rid of it either.

Answer:Solved: Cannot delete file / No Permissions - Unable to display current owner of file

Ha, nevermind. Unlocker just took an enormous amount of time in actually starting up, and turns out the virus scanner had a process linked to the file. So, problem solved. Nothing to see here.

I ran two 20a plugs to my rack and used wire rated for 30a. I was thinking, I should swap those out for twist lock and just buy more wire and run two more 20a circuits. What type of plug is typical for server stuff, and is it 120v or 240v? I want to run whatever I am more likely to need in the future for say, a big UPS, rectifier, etc so that it's there and ready to go.

I'm guessing L6-30? Also do these plugs typically fit in a standard wiring box? Never installed one before.

WELIVESECURITY.COM - Aggressive android ransomware in USA: Tricks users with adult videos

ESET researchers have discovered the first known Android lock-screen-type ransomware spreading in the wild that sets the phone?s PIN lock.

Malware writers have stepped up their game, and with the new Android ransom-lockers, detected by ESET as Android/Lockerpin.A, users have no effective way of regaining access to their device without root privileges or without some other form of security management solution installed, apart from a factory reset that would also delete all their data.

Moreover, this ransomware also uses a nasty trick to obtain and preserve Device Administrator privileges so as to prevent uninstallation. This is the first case in which we have observed this aggressive method in Android malware.

The only way to remove the PIN lock screen without a factory reset is when device is rooted or has a MDM solution capable of resetting the PIN installed. Hi,

I need some kind of program/batch file that will place the current IP address (I have dynamic so it changes every two hours) in a text file that I have specified. The text file would have to be in this way:
|Date|Time|xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx|
|Date|Time|xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx|

ie:
|6/11/2004|1326|220.025.152.015|
|7/11/2004|2226|220.025.152.153|

I am using graburl to update my host of my location, so I thou ht that I could use graburl to do something like this. If it is not possible to include date and time in the text file it is not completely required. However the latest IP address would have to be at the top of the list not at the bottom (This must also happen even if date and time columns are in the list).

Any help would be great.
Cheers

As the title suggests, I'm looking for a way to lock the mouse into the current WINE window. I am using Suse 9.1 with the version of Wine installed from the YaST repo.

The application is Diablo II with the expansion, if it helps. Whenever you click out of the window, it automatically minimizes d2, and when you try to refocus to it, it's corrupted somehow. The only way to recover it at that point is to restart the program.

Hi,

(First of all: I ain't good at English because I come from Holland.)

I own a Satellite A100 PSAA8, it used to be working very well :)
But since a few weeks I have a strange keyboard problem.
I can only type capital letters when caps-lock is off, and I can't type any numbers at all, and a full stop is a: > and a comma is: <
I thought it was a software problem so I formatted the hard disk, then I tried the Toshiba recovery disk.

But it did not work I get a couple of errors with symbol files missing (or something like that) then in the window appears: 0:000 and whatever I am typing it doesn't work. So I grabbed the Windows XP Pro. CD, but when I get to the chapter when I must fill in my serial number, I still can't type any numbers and only capital letters with caps-lock off.

Then I (tried) to install Windows 2000 and still I can't type any numbers, etc.(but the hard disk is empty :S) then I insert a Ubuntu live CD and the keys under ubuntu are working perfect(?). I just doesn't get it. PLEASE HELP!!

Answer:Satellite A100 PSAA8: I can type capital letters when caps-lock is off

Hello Ikke

Believe me it is not easy to say for sure what the problem can be?
Please check if the keyboard is recognized properly in device manager. Be also sure the language settings are the right. So much about possible software reasons for not working keyboard.

It is also possible that there is hardware problem. Maybe is keyboard cable defective or the keyboard controller. It is also possible that keyboard itself is faulty.

In my opinion you should contact authorized service in your country. They can test it with brand new keyboard and see if the keyboard is defective.

I have recently bought a new mobile phone, made to specifications of Telstra here in Australia.

I have received photos from two different friends which are in the phone as "Multimedia message's"

The phone came with software (called Joinme, written by a local Melbourne company) for transferring photos to and from a PC, as well as backing up calendar, other message files etc.

As a beginner I have managed to transfer all Multimedia messages and Text messages from the phone to my PC, and appear on my PC with a file type '.sqm' (ie. for both the Multimedia and Text messages).

Windows cannot select a program to view the photos received as a Mulkimedia messages.

I rang the company who write the 'Joinme' and an unhelpful software support person told me to go and read their web site and anywhere the file type is a consequence of that used by the originating phones (my photos come from two different friends.

Can anyone help with a possible viewer for the '.sqm' files?

Answer:file type .sqm, viewing a file of this type

I dobut your gonna find a program to view them in Windows. SQM files are typically log files anyway. The program that makes them and your phone are you best if not only two ways to view them.

Hello, 2 questions I have please.

If I'm working on a document, eg Excel, is there a way to know the path of the current file I'm working on? I would've thought if I goto the ribbon then recent documents it would be the top file there, but apparently that's not always the case

Secondly, even if I know the path its often too long to navigate to manually. Is there a way to open the directory in which the file I'm currently working on resides?

Thanx
Dan

Answer:current file properties

#1, press alt, F, A. this should open a save as window. it will open the current directory holding this file

#2, complete the steps above, navigate up one directory, right click the folder, and click open

I need to change a zip file to an epub file. I have heard this can be done, but when I add the .epub after the file name, I notice the file is still actually zip type file when I right click properties. This is causing a problem when I try to open it in in different ebook reader programs.

I know there is a way to change a file's actual file type, but I don't know how. Perhaps there is a software or I need to go into the registry?

I can do this either with windows 7 or XP home, because I have two computers. So help on either operating system would be great?

As a related question, I am wondering does changing a file's icon type actually change the file type or just the icon?

Answer:How do I change a file's file type (not only file association)?

Hi awd and welcome to Seven Forums.

I take it that your zip file is an e-book. Changing the extension does nothing to change the format of the data. If you have need to convert an e-book from one format to another try Calibre. In addition to managing e-books it allows you to convert from one form to another. calibre - E-book management

Hi,

I unwittingly downloaded a program to my computer and ran it. It turns out the program owner was masquerading as a reputable service provider, but was really all about stealing as much from his customers as possible. Somewhere in my data files is a file that starts itself up, and then installs spyware on the computer or calls out for spyware downloads. It is hidden well. My Kaspersky 2009 can't spot it. (This is the trojan-like malware part of the problem). I could use some help spotting this file, or files, and removing it.

One tactic this malware uses is that it installs unremovable files onto the computer system. I have struggled to remove some of these files with invalid file names, and it is un-do-able. This malicious software uses multiple methods to hide and corrupt the unremovable file. I have researched some of the different ways that a file can be made unremovable (invalid file names, strange file permissions, etc.), and this guy uses layered confusion to keep these files intact. A couple of months ago I backed up all my data, wiped the hard disk completely clean, reinstalled the operating system and AV, reinstalled the data, and repeatedly scanned the system with my AV and various online scanners. I found and deleted 4 or 5 viruses and I was satisfied that the system was clean.

But even though I have been very careful, this spyware has slowly crept back in, and starting a few days ago my system started to crash repeatedly. Now the system is screwe... Read more

Hi. I've been having trouble lately, my laptop freezes completely and randomly if (and so far only if) I'm online. I use Windows Vista and Google Chrome. This started last time I updated my free AVG, didn't happen before. Just in case, I scanned my C disc for viruses and found nothing, but it said that the file Current Tabs from Chrome is corrupted. I don't think it has anything to do with my problem, but what happens if I remove it? Can it be done, can it be replaced? Does it replace itself on use?Can this file fail have anything to do with the fact that I downloaded Firefox just to see if Chrome was the problem and I imported everything included bookmarks? It froze with Firefox too, but if the problem is on that file and it was imported to it, maybe it can be fixed.I don't know, I'm lost. I don't think it has anything to do with the laptop's temperature.Thank you for any help.

Hi,I would like to inform that I am using two machines with save data on regular basis. I want to transferthe latest file of each day to a new directory of the same computer. Could someone please help methat how can I automatically copy the new file to another directory. I am novice in using batch file so if please anybody provide a batch file for this purpose I will be highly thankful.

Answer:Transfer a file with current date

You could easily use something like this:Code: [Select]@ECHO OFF
TITLE Organizer 0.1b
SET PRE=%DATE:/=-% && SET TODAY=%PRE:~4,10%
SET DIR=%CD%
REM Replace *FILENAME.* with whatever is appropriate. Try to keep you selection as small as possible.
REM Don't use too many wildcards. Something like " *.txt, or %TODAY%*.* can work just fine.
XCOPY %DIR%\*FILENAME.* %DIR%\%TODAY%\. /F /I
REM This will search it's home directory, and find all files that were modified or created today.
REM Then, it will copy them to a folder with today's date as the name.
I tested it on a directory with 12 files. 6 were created today, and the others are older. If you want this to run automatically each night, that is also possible. But as is, you can just set it up as needed, and double-click it nightly.

More as an alternative to twiddling my thumbs than anything else, I tried to produce a batch file that would count up the number and size of files in a folder, as well as the number and size of files with each extension. Hence it would say how many word documents I have and how much space they're taking up, etc.

I've managed to get a vaguely working model, but the output formatting is terrible (I just wanted it to say X bytes in Y "Z" Files, none of that ugly dotted variable names) and I have failed to get it to equate .htm and .html, .jpg and .jpeg, etc.
Code:
@ECHO OFF
REM THIS BATCH FILE ITTERATES THROUGH ALL THE SUBFOLDERS AND FILES IN A FOLDER (IDEALLY A DRIVE)
REM IT TOTALS THE NUMBER OF FILES CONTAINED IN THAT FOLDER, AND THE SIZE OF THOSE FILES.
REM IT ALSO TOTALS THE NUMBER AND SIZE OF FILES WITH EACH EXTENSION IT ENCOUNTERS.
REM ALL INFORMATION IS THEN PRINTED TO THE SCREEN AND FTYPEDST.TXT

IF EXIST FTypeDst.txt ERASE FTypeDst.txt
ECHO. >FTypeDst.txt
ATTRIB +A FTypeDst.txt

ECHO SCANNING FILE TREE FOR FILE EXTENSION DISTRIBUTION
ECHO Please Wait Paitently. . .

(SET /A ALLNUMBER = 0) & (SET /A ALLSIZE = 0)

REM cycle through the current directory and subs, Increment Allnumber, Allsize, define and increment Number of * files, size of * files.

You would be better off using third party software that already does this. Plenty of them out there.
I personally would check the extension of each file using the cmd extensions of a for loop. then do an if statement for each file type you want to keep track of. then use a call statement to branch to a function that adds up the file sizes and number of files.

When I re-open Indexing options it says 'Indexing complete' but I have thousands of .tpl files so I know this can't be true and it is still not possible to search their content.

Is there some kind of progress status somewhere?

Please help!

A client sends their data files to us on a CD. We copy the current files over what we have on our network. However, at my desk the current files on the CD do not display. I put the CD in my D drive, right click at Start to go into Explorer and highlight the D. Files are displayed, but they are old files with old dates. At first we were telling the client they didn't copy the files correctly. However, I discovered that if I put the CD in at someone else's computer, and use Explorer, more current files are displayed. So it's just my computer that isn't displaying the current CD contents.

This has us completely baffled! Anyone have any ideas? Thanks.

Answer:Display of D: doesn't show current file

It could be that the software used to write the files to the CD uses a different UDF driver than is available on your PC. Try installing a few UDF drivers. (different software may use proprietary udf drivers) One other thing, check the PC it reads on and see if there is a CD writing program on it, if there is it's a good bet that you may need the UDF driver from the software manufacturer of that program, installing that software generally installs the driver as well.

I have an MS Access database file, which recently went corrupt and unrecoverable. I have tried everything I can think of to try to recover it, but have failed on all attempts. My last hail mary attempt is to try to recover an older version of the file. By old version I mean to revert back to the state it was in a few days ago before the last few saves. I know Windows 7 has the "restore previous version" feature but unfortunatelly, this file is located on a USB flash drive and that option is not available when I right click the file. My idea is hopefully there is some kind of software title out there that can scan the drive for overwritten/previous versions of saved files. I have used the software Recuva in the past to restore deleted files and was hoping that this would see older versions of files before they are saved over but it appears that it does not. Does anyone have any suggestions os to if and how to recover such a file?

Answer:Recover an older version of current file

If the file is overwritten (as appears to be the case) then it cannot be recovered. Unless your software kept previous versions of the file I am afraid it is gone. The previous versions feature works by periodically creating a backup copy of files. It is not a part of the file system. If a file is important it needs a backup copy.Flash drives are the least reliable of modern storage media and can not be trusted for primary storage of important files. In addition to the reliability issues they are easily lost, stolen, or physically damaged. They should be used primarily as a transport media where the files are stored elsewhere. All important files, wherever they are stored, need at least one backup copy. Those of particular importance need 2 or more backup copies, preferably stored in different locations. Having no backup copies is asking for trouble.

I need your help in extracting these 5 files on my desktop in such a way that their file type remains "executable Jar file" and "TAR file" respectively.

Answer:Extracting .jar file using winrar without changing file type

Hi,

Just a suggestion here, try peazip to extract the files, it handles most file types and is the program I have used in the past rather than winzip etc

Hello Everyone,

I have kind of an odd question, I have been looking into changing file type icons when I came across an interesting conflict.
I would like to be able to change the file type icon for all .exe files to the same file type icon within a file explorer. If you were to try to do this, all icons that are associated with each .exe program becomes the same icon no matter where they are located.

The thing is that usually when I am in a file explorer the .exe files are installers and when I have .exe files in places like on my desktop, in the start menu, and in the taskbar, they are for launching already installed programs.

Can anyone think of a possibly way that could solve this conflict easily with some kind of setting or software.

I thought maybe something with shortcuts but that turned out to not work for me.
I also believe that .ico icon files have multiple sizes within them but I don't think there would be a realistic way to edit each of them for all the programs installed.

Has anyone else ever tried something like this? or have any solutions that I am not aware of?
Thank You

Answer:Changing .exe File Type Icons In File Explorer But Nowhere Else

File Explorer is on Windows 8/8.1, renamed from Windows Explorer on Windows 7 back to Windows95/Windows NT4.

Usually an .exe file for running a program will have its own icon, right-click a Shortcut, Properties, Change Icon to see what the .exe file has in it. Some programs may have a separate icon in their Folder in C:\Program Files or C:\Program Files (x86). If no icons are found Windows will put up a panel with a number of choices but they are more generic, mostly for Windows things.

Installable .exe files will have more of a generic icon and are of only a few types.

Question: NTFS File?

How do i make an NTFS file? I'm running windows 2000 but need to make an ntfs file to image win 2000 on to another hard disk.

Answer:NTFS File?

I'm not sure if Win 2000 is the same as Win XP, but in Win XP you can go into "Control Panel" "Administrative Tools" "Computer Management" Click on the "Disk Management" icon in the left panel, click on the "help" button at the top, Click "Help Topics", type "partition" into the search option and you will find the instructions listed there.

Question: ntfs.sys file

Hello All,

I recently switched my pc on and while booting up I received the folowing message

missing or corrupt ntfs.sys file.

I re-booted to my recovery panel, then typed r and the bluse screen loaded then said

cannot load setup code error 4

Eventually I managed and copied a new file to the hard disk after re-naming the ntfs.sys to ntfs.old

Today when I started my pc the same thing happened. Eventually I managed and while in went to the command promt and checked the .sys files. It is there but in uppercase (don't know if this matters!).

While in there I re-did the procress of copying another file.

I'm now at my pc and it is running brilliantly, but I thouht I would ask the forum while everything is ok.

Many hanks as always,

Best wishees

"Expand to current folder" works great with some folders. But I have a bunch of folders I want to have expanded in one instance of file explorer while I'm working, so I've made shortcuts to them and pinned them to Quick Access. When they're certain folders in my documents, accessing them through a shortcut or Quick Access won't automatically expand to them.

I would like the folders to expand under This PC > Local Disk (C:) > Users ... and not Kyle Delaney > Documents ... if at all possible.

I had vista 64 but it crashed. Everything was backed up. I installed windows 7 prof 64 on the machine and began to use it regularly. However, I was never able to recover any of the files in the vista back up image. I have tried to run a virtual machine with vista 64 on it to restore that backup file and get the files off of it but I am having problems with my BIOS not letting me run a VM. Is there anyway to access these compressed and locked files within my current configuration of windows 7 to extract them??? or can you only access a vista back up image on a vista OS. Please help me!!

I see the AU brings the option of deleting temp files in Edge whenever the browser is closed. This is something I used to do with IE but with Ten and Edge that option has not been available until now.

I wondered what the latest thinking is on whether its a good idea to automatically delete stuff and if so, what options would you choose ?

I'm just experimenting with the 'Always clear this when I close the browser' option selected and these are the settings I'm using.

Answer:What's the current thinking/best practice for browser file cleanup.

To me, it's a personal choice.
a. are you trying to hide what you've done and where you've been? If so, there are better ways (sand boxing).
b. as regards temporary files- well, they are temporary. I just let a Ccleaner run clean this when I run it before updating my disk image.
If space is a problem with respect to these, you have a much more significant issue.
c. considering cookies, some financial sites rely on their cookies to be present in order to 'recognise' your computer. Yes- it's true! I mean, consider what happens if you simply use a different browser.. So in some exceptional cases clearing cookies can be practically problematic.

Hi

I am using following batch file for cleaning the desktop and also for taking backup of desktop:

@echo off

set curr_date=%DATE:~10,4%-%DATE:~4,2%-%DATE:~7,2%

mkdir "%USERPROFILE%\My Documents\backup\%curr_date%_backup"

xcopy "%USERPROFILE%\Desktop" "%USERPROFILE%\My Documents\backup\%curr_date%_backup" /D/S/H/V/C/F/K/Y

for /d /r "%USERPROFILE%\Desktop" %%x in (*) do rd /s /q "%%x"
for /r "%USERPROFILE%\Desktop" %%x in (*) do del /f "%%x"

copy "%USERPROFILE%\My Documents\backup\%curr_date%_backup\*.lnk" "%USERPROFILE%\Desktop\"

del /q "%USERPROFILE%\My Documents\backup\%curr_date%_backup\*.lnk"

In the first line I am creating a folder with current date, e.g. curr_date_backup. Second, copying the contents of Desktop to the newly created folder. Third, deleting directories from the desktop. Forth, deleting files from the desktop. fifth, Copy back all the shortcuts to the desktop. sixth, deleting all the shortcuts from Current date folder.

This batch file is working perfectly in Windows XP. It works in win 7 also but the problem is that the name of the current date folder created by first command is "Desktop". when I use command prompt to check the name, the name is correct. I checked the properties of the folder the correct is there also. But in windows the name doesn't match with the expected one.

I need help. Kindly tell me what's going on? why window 7... Read more

Recently, I have been getting a message saying "your current security settings do not allow this file to be downloaded" and does not let me download the file.

Lately this has become a major issue for alot of internet users, because when i search it up on google, the number of questions are crazy.

Unfortunately, all the answers left to help the person never work for me. I have tried about everything, from lowering down my firewall, to trying to change my registry.

If this question has been asked many times before in this forum, I'm sorry to post another one,but for some reason the search button on the website was not working for me.

Since you guys have solved my problems before,i am counting on your for help again!

If you need more details, ask me anything, because the earlier this problem is over, the better.

Answer:Your Current Security Settings Do Not Allow This File To Be Downloaded Popup

Try this and see if it helps. If it does you will have to decide if you want to disable the security that it gives you for the convenience of downloading what you want.

Go to your user settings and under the UAC (User Account Control) uncheck the box and I beleive you may have to reboot.
See if you still get the messages. If you do, then you may want to go back and select it again.

These files were on an external USB drive and I was trying to open them from there. I checked permessions and it appears there is full access. However, editing within the permissions dialog boxes are not as that clear to me.

suggestions?

How about .....
1. right click at the file > Run As Administrator.
OR,
2. right click at the file > Take Ownership
Context Menu - Take Ownership . The tutorial works in Win 7 as well.

whenever i try to download something, program or game, i get this box that pops up and does not allow me to do anything.

i tried going to tools-internet settnigs-security and clicked on restore defaults and still get the same thing. i did not mess with any settings.

i did however have a problem that led up to this...here is the back story.

the past few days every now and then i would get a pop up from AVG saying there was some sort of infection, so i would try to heal or send to vault then it would say the file did not exsist.

so i then tried to run a sypware scan, i think that i got originally from here, it said it needed to download the latest version, so when i did that is when i first got the above error and it would not let me run that download. so i just ray the spybot.

i did still get a pop up after running that, but haven't again for a few hours now........but still cannot download anything.

thanks in advance for any help!

jennifer

my computer has been running slow lately and sometimes pages take forever to load and i have to hit refresh a few times for it to work, i just thought it was due to moving and having to go with a local cable internet service instead of road runner through time warner.....i don't know if that has any bearing here or not, just thought i would let you know, that may be a seperate post/help

Answer:[SOLVED] your current security setting do not allow this file to be downloaded

while waiting for replies i thought since i reset the web setting maybe i needed to reboot, so i did that and now i cannot get back on the internet!!!!

i checked my network connection and it is good, i mean i am on another computer that is hooked up to the same modem. router, etc, and this is working fine, but on the other computer it is telling me that i am not connected to the internet. yet my network connection is showing up fine.

i am really at a loss of what to do now...........

thanks again! jennifer

I've noticed that on my laptop (Xp-Pro), many of the OS and program files are compressed. None of the folders (immediately above the files or higher up) have comprssion turned on.For example, most, but not all Acronis True Image files (in C:\Program Files\Acronis\True Image) are compressed.Similarly, an application (that I wrote years ago) and installed manually (i.e. I created a folder and copied the .EXE across) is compressed. Is there some default setting elsewhere in XP that causes this compression to occur??? By way of contrast, my other PC (XP-Home) has the same apps, but the files are not compressed!

Answer:NTFS File Compression

Running Disk Cleanup compresses files if that option is selected.

System32\Drivers\NTFS.sys" it says to restart with the windows cd and hit "r" at the first screen. i can do all that but i can not remember the administrator password. ive tried everything that it could be and have come up empty. i am able to take out the hard drive and externally hook it up to another computer. at that point, i can look through the hdd and see the files. i tried to replace the file with a copy of the one that is on the other computer but that didnt work so i changed it back. please help me out with this soon. it will be greatly appreaciated.

Answer:corrupt NTFS.sys file

If no administrator password was ever created, just hit enter.

If no luck, you can try one of the tools avaliable here:

http://www.petri.co.il/forgot_administrator_password.htm

Once you get in the recovery console try this command:

copy c:\windows\servicepackfiles\I386\NTFS.sys c:\windows\system32\drivers

Does anyone know if you can use NTFS file permissions on XP Home edition? I have a lot of files on my pc I would like to set security on. I used it in XP Pro at school and it was great.

Answer:NTFS File Permissions

XP Home doesn't have the security features at the file level like XP Pro does ... The link below explains the differences. I believe you're referring to the "Access Control" features ...

Question: NTFS File Checking

Whenever I use my dad's PC, something weird happens. Every time I turn it on, it goes thru NTFS file checking, like it does when you forcefully shut the machine down. I did it once, and since then, it has kept doing it. Nothing seems to stop it. Any ideas?

It does this when i boot into XP Pro SP2.

Thanks everyone.

Answer:NTFS File Checking

CHKDSK recommends to run a check with the /F switch

If that dont work

To determine if more serious problems exist before scheduling or running chkdsk.exe with the /f switch, run chkntfs <drive letter>:. If this command reports that dirty bit is set, there may be real damage that needs to be fixed.

i love xp i never had any problems until recently i was in the middle of playing clancys splinter cell when my system

my originl xp pro operating system disk got damaged some how i never knew that a disk could become corrupted wich i

checking for system files right after the f8 license agreement then it would just stop with a f3 quit setup option
drive me crazy well the only other os disk i have is win98 so what i eventually got to work was using a xp iso
with my cd key from with in win98 wich took me 4 days to figure out how to do it i was at my wits end by the time
i got it to work what i had to end up doing was creating a 2 partitions on my hard drive 1 primary and 1 extended
logical partition but every time i got win98 on the c: drive i would only have 10gb of space yet d: would have
all the rest of my 80gb hard drive space so what i ended up doing was installing win98 on the d: drive i put all
the system files on the second partition so i could have more disk space only the boot files are on the c: drive
or first partion now my question is is it safe for me to convert from fat32 to ntfs if this is the way my system

Answer:Need Help with NTFS File Conversion

What are you proposing to use to do the conversion? You can't do it from XP without first installing disk management software and in any case it's not something you should even consider without first taking a full hard disk image so you can recover if it misfires. I would use the free version of Easeus Todo for the disk image and Minitool Partition Wizard for the conversion. That's free too.
