Preferred Solution: windows XP operating system cannot be found

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: windows XP operating system cannot be found

Possible reasons to check out:1. BIOS not detecting hard drive - Go into your BIOS (F2/ Del /Esc key at boot will normally get you into your BIOS) to see if hard drive is being detected or not. Is your BIOS detecting the hard drive?2. Your hard disk has been damaged - If your BIOS is NOT detecting the hard drive than this is a likely possibility3. The MBR has been possibly corrupted - If your BIOS is detecting the hard drive then you can use your CD to boot into Recovery and try to repair / fix the MBR.___________________________________________? Alright, so this problem is a little complicated.

My computer fell a couple days ago, and I had to get a new hard drive. Unfortunately, my mother let my uncle who is NOT a professional install a "new" hard drive, which was actually his old one and came with Linux and not Windows.
It worked fine but I wanted Windows, so he did something and installed Windows 7 from a flash drive. And it was great.
Until this afternoon, when I accidentally changed the BIOS order and now I'm getting an "operating system not found" message... Is there something wrong with the hard drive (again, it isn't new) or did I just completely mess something up?

Answer:Windows 7 says Operating System Not Found-- Help!

Hello lesharo, welcome to Seven Forums!

Have you tried setting the "BIOS order" back to what it was before you changed it?

PROBLEM SOLVED bios was configuring hard drives as IDE instead of RAID.
So yesterday my computer worked, I turned it off last night and let it install updates (12 of them to be exact). This morning, lo and behold when I turned it on it posted and then said something along the lines of "no operating system found." It also won't give me the option of pressing ctrl +i to configure RAID, it just jumps straight to the no os found message. I managed to get it to boot from the windows 7 disc, but it can't seem to find my installation of windows 7. When I go into bios setup it still detects all 3 of my hard drives so I don't think that one of those died. Is it possible that one of those stupid updates killed windows?

Right now i've got it running startup repair, but it never actually found my install of windows, so I don't know what it's going to accomplish.

Here's hoping that we can get this resolved.

Edit: It actually says "Missing operating system."
Also, i'm not sure that it is actually posting. First screen is an ASUS p5q pro screen that says press del for setup. Then I get a black screen that says initializing, which then states that No Hard disc was detected or found or something, jumps back to the Asus screen, and then back to a black screen that says Missing operating system.

Answer:Windows 7 No Operating System Found

You may be able to use BootRec to fix things. I rebuilt the BCD and MBR when I had a "no OS found" and even though ScanOs found nothing, the computer booted after that. Very weird, but hey it worked so I'll take it.

Hi...
My 1TB WD passport harddrive had a problem "format disk drive" .
I had very valuable data in the drive and wanna fix it.
I followed the post in the forum (http://en.kioskea.net/forum/affich-68012-external-hd-wants-to-format-can-t-access#15)  and tried with Partition Table Doctor software.
It didn't detect my external hard drive and displayed my laptop harddrive (harddrive 1) has some sector to fix and I fixed it. it saved and asked for reboot.
My after rebooting Im getting "Operating system Not found"
Now I'm afraid that both my HDD and laptop hard drive are corrupted.
please someone help me in fixing this problem.
Atleast my laptop......
Its really urgent...

Hi

Do you have Windows 7 install CD or System repair CD in hand ?. If yes, boot from it and run the automatic startup repair.

If you don't have an install disc, create a System Repair CD from a friend's machine and use that.

Hi all, completely new to this forum, registered purely because of the problem in the title.
I'm an every day home user and not that experienced with advanced IT stuff although I do know more than your average home user.
Now, to the problem.
I was using my Sony vaio laptop (CW series bought in November 2009) as usual about 4 hours ago, when the HDD appeared to make a strange beep/clicking sound, and my computer completely froze up. In a state of slight panic, I held down the power button and forced my computer to shut down.
Upon restarting, the vaio logo appeared, the screen went blank and the message 'operating system not found' was displayed.
I turned the laptop off via the power button again, left it for a minute and then switched it back on. I had the same result.
After searching the net on the family computer I discovered that checking the the BIOS may be the the next logical step. What I have gathered from the vaio's BIOS is that my HDD is listed as having '0GB' memory. I have also checked the boot priorities (?) and hard drive is listed as priority one as the net page suggested it should be.

My specs are:
Sony vaio vpccw1
Intel core 2 dual core possessor (2.8GHz roughly)
4GB of RAM
320 GB HDD
(I don't know how much of this is relevant!)

I do have recovery DVDs that I created when I first got the vaio.
I also have a Windows back up on a portable hard drive from April this year (but obviously I would like to retrieve the files I have saved since then... Read more

Everything has no problem before. But when my pc was booted up next time, it had a message "operating system not found". This is a IBM PC with Windows Millennium Edition.

When I boot-up with boot disk in A: It appear that --->

There are several possible causes.

1. The drive may need to be partitioned. To create a partition on the drive run fdisk from the MS Dos prompt.

2. You may be using third party disk partition...

3. Some viruses also cause your drive C to not register. You can use a virus scanning program to check your computer for viruses.

In the CMOS setup, no hard drive can detect (Since I use the auto-dectect function), only CDrom & floppy drive can be detect!

When I try to use fdisk, "no fix drive are found!!"

What I can do?

Iím running windows 7 on a Sony Vaio VGN FZ140e.. For the past few weeks Iíve heard beeps from my computer and it crashed (blue screen) once.. these did not happen often so I figured they werenít much on an issue... Today when I turned it on I got a message "Operating System Not Found". It will not boot.. Iíve tried inserting the windows 7 disc to try the repair option but when I boot from disk it says "loading windows files" at the bottom and goes straight to the starting windows screen where it freezes rather than to a point where I have an option to install or repair. I have tried going into the BIOS and moving boot from disc up and then back to defaults.. Iím not sure if my hard drive went bad or if something else is keeping my laptop from booting because it appears from the BIOS that the computer does recognize that a hard drive is connected (says memory 200GB or whatever). Can anyone point me in the right direction please? Should I order a new hard drive and start over or are there still other options to rescue my files?

Well windows 7 was working sweet last night.
Today I opened a folder with some videos in it, left the room but when I came back in all I saw on my laptop was a black screen which read something like "No operating system detected" .
I restarted and had the same problem , so I put in a usb stick with windows 7 and started the setup.
Setup could not detect my hard drive :/ and now when I boot up it just gets stuck on the "Fujitsu Siemens loading screen" ......
Anyone got any suggestions?
Thanks

I have a sony vaio vgn-nr385e that cam preinstalled with windows vista home premium on it. An update cause the computer to crash, and it was time for a clean up anyway. So i used the built in hard drive recovery and restored the system but it kept giving me an error 1031 so i formatted the entire hard drive, merged the partitions, because at a later time, i was intending on making my own recovery partition, and once i did that, i reinstalled windows vista, got the desktop, installed the graphics driver, and when i restarted, it said something about installing 1 update and then it restarted and it said configuring update and then back to the desktop. I was thinking all was going smooth up until I removed the vista cd from the computer, restarted it again, and whooaa, wait a minute, NO operating system found! What's going on here guys?? Please help. I have checked the default boot settings as best i could and all seemed to be ok, and i do also know that If i have the cd in the drive, windows vista that is, then it boots just fine. Please help!

Check again the default boo settings, you should set the first boot device to the hard drive. It is possible that your boot configuration set on the bios is incorrect.

Hello! I've been running Windows Vista Home Premium on my 6 month old LG (no laughing please) laptop. Everything has been working OK, until this morning...

While playing WoW, my computer stopped responding. Nothing would work to "wake it up" so I was forced to do a hard boot. When the computer started up again, I got the error screen "Operating System not found".

I've been searching online and found nothing that helps - every solution I could find told me to download new drivers, but how do you do that without being able to startup your computer???

Please Help!

My latest problem with it started last Sunday morning, Jan. 11, 2009 when the system kept booting in Safe Mode, regardless of what I did, and it locked me out giving me no access to anything, then the following morning when I booted it, I got the message, Operating System cannot be found. Hi Guys,
I know this is a topic that has received quite alot of attention but so far i have tried loads of so called fixes and my problem seems to be unique.
I got the blue screen of death last night with the error message 'KERNAL_DATA_INPAGE_ERROR.
I also got this tech info *** STOP: 0x0000007A (0xFFFFF6FB7DA00018, 0XFFFFFFFFC0000056, I can elaborate on this later if required.
Had blue screen a few times so didnt think anything of it, then today mid way through watching a download on vlc, my PC restarted and gave me 'operating system not found. I restarted and it said the same thing.
My CD rom tray is broken and so to get into it i (or my gf lol) have to take my laptop apart and place the disk in then rebuild, anyway i put my recovery disk in and it wont find my HDD therefore cannot even do a fresh install coz windows has no where to put it.
Tried Dos'ing it, my laptop in dos is giving OMB, which is either a strange name for a hard drive or i have 0 MB :/ cant do anything with it, samsung recovery solution wont start(F4), tried resetting all dos settings, advanced settings(F8) etc but no joy.
Is there anyway to fix this or do i need to look into a new hard drive? Any help will be much appreciated!!!

Hi guys,I'm worried. I have a computer that's been lying on its side doing nothing for a few months. I had used it on and off to access a few files I needed over the last couple of weeks.I plugged it in and went to use it again this morning, but it won't start up and run Windows 2000.I pressed F12 to troubleshoot and it said "Operating System Not Found". The hard disk is a Maxtor 120GB that I bought in 2005. I can't understand what has caused this fault.

Helping a friend on his Acer Aspire V5 laptop that was running an OEM Windows 8 to upgrade to 8.1.

After selecting the Upgrade to Windows 8.1 via the store, the system went through it's install procedure, however after it does an auto reboot, it gives you a blank screen with the message No Operating System found, in the upper left corner.

But, you can turn the machine off and back on, and it will boot just fine. However if you select restart it does the same thing "no operating system found", on restart and again you must power down and power back on.

I have searched for fixes, but all seem to point to some sort of re-install process. I am not to crazy about the idea of re-installing to factory settings or doing a repair back to Windows 8 and attempting to upgrade again, are their any known shorter fixes for this?

And if I do go back to Windows 8, and try to upgrade again, what is to say it won't happen again?

I have a Toshiba Satellite S70-A running Windows 8.1 that's been working fine for two years. Recently, I've noticed that it's been running too slowly to use and there is some spyware that I couldn't remove, so I decided to reset my laptop. I backed up my files and used the 'Reset my PC' option inside the control panel. My laptop seemed to get stuck at 77% for nearly three hours, I called Windows Technical Support and they told me to try restarting it.

Well, after the restart, the operating system couldn't be located. I tried the reset option in the Boot Menu, I tried reinstalling Windows 8.1 via a USB drive and a CD, but neither would work. I've received errors stating that the drive housing Windows is locked and that I need to unlock it to continue, and that the drive housing Windows could not be located.

I would love to know how to 1) recover, or 2) reinstall Windows 8.1.

Thanks.

Answer:No Operating System Found and Can't Reinstall Windows

Have you tried booting to Safe Mode?  Normally you press F8 a few times after powering on to get to it.  In my case if that didn't work, I'd restore from my latest full system backup.  If you didn't make one, now you see why you should.  If neither of these solve your problem, you'll probably need to format that hard drive.  I believe there's an option to do that when you boot the Windows 8 install DVD.  If you do that, be sure to get all the drivers you'll need from the Toshiba web site.

 Good luck.

I have a Sony Viao with Windows Vista OS or at least up until 2 days ago it had this OS. I used my laptop Saturday afternoon to do homework online and tried to use it again on Monday only to get "Operating System Not Found" message when I turn the laptop on.

I reset the BIOS to have it boot to the hard disk thinking that was the problem, no luck and everytime I turn it on it makes a clicking noise that it didn't make before. I've tried pressing F8, F11, F12 and ESC to get it to go to safe mode but no luck.

I do not have a recovery disc and I can not remember if I ever received one with the computer. Any suggestions as to what has happened and how I can fix this? I am desperate right about now.

Answer:Help please!!! Operating System Not Found - Windows Vista

It is sounding like your hard drive has failed ( due to the clicking sound you are hearing). You can try getting in touch with the manufacturer and requesting an installation disc. Replacing the hard drive should not be too difficult for you. You could check locally with some computer shops to see if they have any of the size that you had. Used ones can be relatively cheap. I had to do that to one of ours, the first hard drive didn't work, but the second on did and it is still chugging along.

Hi,

I have the above computer which I purchased in 2011,following a recommended Windows 7 update a couple of months ago, the laptop locked. I powered off the laptop and could not viewmy main hard disc’s(C or D) when the computer rebooted, however I had access tomy external drives

A local so called Microsoft specialist(rogue) visited meon my instruction with the intention of recovering my data from both these drives, which he didto an external drive which I supplied him. He removed my hard disc from my machine in order to do this

Today, I have reinserted the hard disc into my computer, however I am getting the above message “Operating system not found”

I have selected both Boot-up options:-

? F2 – Setup, there appears to be no option to Boot from an external drive in the setup

? F4 – Recovery, I cannot enter the Windows menuto perform this task, laptop appears to hang

Any ideas would be welcome or am I just wasting my time withthis laptop(hard disc) which despite this problem appears physically in verygood condition as it has been well looked after

I confirm my laptop was protected by the latest version of Norton and Malwarebytes at the time of my problem

This my first post on this forum, I trust it is in the correct location and your advice would be most appreciated

Many thanks

Answer:Operating system not found Ė Samsung RV511 Windows 7

Your HDD is inside, why are you looking for an external one? (or I understood you wrong)
F2 and set boot order to HDD (might show as it's name). Save and exit.

If this doesn't work boot with a Windows Repair Disk and see if your OS is recognized.

Try reinstalling the HD, changing cables, to see if you can get it to register in BIOS.

Until it register in BIOS there's little point in running maker's HD Diagnostic extended CD scan.

Hi guys, thanks for looking.

I've been attempting to install windows on an advent 9515 with a new hard drive however all of the usb boot disks I create return "Operating system not found" I've tested them at boot in other computers and they work fine there. I have tried with windows 7 and 8, I have succeeded with installing ubuntu onto the machine (so the machine at least works).

I have tried other hard drives with windows already installed on them with the same effect, I would have expected it to at least try and load then error out after that. What is going on here?

Troubleshooting Windows 7 Failure to Boot

Hi guys,

I have recently upgrade to Win 10 from windows 7 and it was running fine until it started booting with the analyzing and repairing windows screen. I had tried to get out of it by windows repair and by system restore but there were no points to restore too. I ended up trying the windows reset which failed when I selected to leave my files so then I tried the reset including removing my files. It failed part way through saying it could not complete the action and now when I boot up every time I get "An operating system wasn't found" etc. I do not have a windows CD or know my windows registration number. PLEASE help anyone!

Answer:An operating system wasn't found after resetting windows failed

If upgrade was successfully done and Windows 10 was sucessfully activated on your PC. Then you can clean install Windows 10 on the same device, via creating Bootable USB drive of Windows10 image (.iso).

I must have been infected with a virus. It happened during the day when I was at work and my computer was on standby. I came home and found the Operating System Not Found error on my black screen. I downloaded the Wondershare Liveboot and ran that and it froze. My son stopped it because he downloaded the Windows 7 Operating System installation program on a USB drive and tried to load that to reload Windows 7. Now all I can get is a black screen telling me my File: \Boot\BCD file is missing.

I have a Dell Inspirion Laptop with 8 GB memory, 250 GB hard drive. 64 bit operating system.

Where do I find the File: \Boot\BCD to reload on my computer. I can't access the partition, the recovery program, nothing.

Can someone please help me?!

Desperate. I've had this computer only six months, and yes I had a full Virus Scan program on my computer.

Answer:Windows 7 Virus - File \Boot\BCD Missing, Operating System Not Found

If you have only had the system for 6 months then call dell and tell them the error you get. They are very good at supporting current customers that are under their warranty. It sort of sounds like you had the computer turned off during an update in progress. My son did the same thing to the PC I built for him and we ended up replacing the drive to fix it. That is not to say that your drive is bad but mine is a real nice paper weight on a windy day.

Work through these steps for Troubleshooting Windows 7 Failure to Boot

Report back what happens as you go as there may be more steps.

Where did you get Win7 installer? Did you burn it yourself?

Do you have an EFI BIOS? Enter BIOS setup to see if HD is detected, and if there is an EFI Boot disk in BIOS Boot order listings.

I have a dell studio 15 laptop Windows Vista Home Premium installed on it. I got this laptop in November 2008, since then it was working fine just when I returned from Germany o india its not working. initially i thought disk got damaged due to x-ray scanning on airports but I read several threads on internet which says it does not erases/damages hard disks same I have also experienced during my several visits in which same laptop has gone through with this scanning process.

I tried to recover my OS by using OS DVD provided with the laptop. I booted my laptop by setting up the bootable device as DVD in BIOS but it does not help me to recover. I tried to install Windows XP also in C derive so that I can see the data(i.e. my all useful and important) present in D derive but its is not allowing me to install windows XP too on it.

While searching information, I came to know that it seems like its a issue of Windows Vista Home Premium and several people have faced the same . In one solution, it is mentioned that OS DVD provided with laptop may not have files to boot and recover so i downloaded a bootable files and tried with that too but that also does not work for me but it has worked for others as per reviews mentioned.

When I reboot my laptop from OS DVD priovided from the dell, I used to get an following errors:

PXE-E61: Media test failure, check cable
PXE-MOF: Exiting Broadcom PXE ROM
Operating System Not found"
FYI- I run a diagnostic test also and all tests got ... Read more

Ok, so a while back when the Windows 10 Upgrade had popped up on my computer, I upgraded with no problem at all. I wanted to do a factory restore in order to clean up my laptop completely, however while updating, the power went out and the computer shut off. Logging back on, I couldn't access Windows at all. I couldn't even get to the login screen. The message that had popped up had said that no operating system was found and to press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart. I have no idea what to do, and I don't have the money to shell out for a new laptop. I have a Lenovo ThinkPad T520. Can someone please help me?

Answer:No Operating System Found (Please Help)

From an operating computer, download and install Macrium Reflect Free. Make a Macrium Reflect Rescue disk (either CD, DVD or Flash drive). Then boot the non-operating computer from that. Under the other tasks menu item will be a utility to fix windows boot problems. Try running that.

Macrium Reflect Free

If that doesn't get things going, you will have to go back and re-install the original operating system, Windows 7, 8 or 8.1 and then upgrade again - using Media Creation Tool for Windows 10 this time.

But sometimes it wont And Il be able to get in fine.

Thanks for the help.

Answer:"Operating system not found"

This type of behaviour can be caused by your computer overheating. You can check your system temperatures with SpeedFan, which should give you an indication of whether your system is running too hot. Also, I would recommend that you open your computer case and make sure all the fans are spinning okay and that there isn't an excessive amount of dust in there that would impede air flow. See the following Bleeping Computer tutorial for guidance on cleaning inside your computer.Cleaning the Interior of your PC

Answer:Operating system not found

That 'stop' error is usually associated with bad ram ... try swapping it out for known good stuff, or if you have 2 sticks installed, take one out and try it, then replace with the other & try again.

It can be any amount of other 'problems' also, usually hardware ... good luck.

That error could be an indication that your hard drive has failed. Check your drive cable; swap it with a new cable if possible. If the same problem exists the culprit is most likely a failed hard drive, or corrupt data.

Hey everyone,

I need some serious help here. I tried to turn on my laptop today (Hp Pavilion dv9700) and i got an error on a black screen with text "Operating System not found). I have tried booting from a windows vista disk with no luck. Also tried to use system recovery which also will not work. Im not sure what to do since i cant even boot from disk. I removed the hard drive just as protection because i need the data on it, but from what i have read is that the hard drive may be the problem and is dead, but im not sure. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I have Sony Vaio I7, 8Gb memory. I do not have OS backup disk. I upgraded from 8 to 8.1 and then to 10. It has been running great. No problems. Use Kaspersky Internet Security. I shut down computer normally this morning. I powered back on this evening and there was a frown face saying something happened to computer and it would restart and had a percent complete number. I waited and waited and it never went above 0%. I performed a cold boot and shut down and then turned back on. The Vaio logo showed briefly and then blue screen saying no operating system found. Any ideas are appreciated.

You are going to have to make a bootable USB or DVD to boot the computer from. I recommend Kyhi's recovery disk because it has a few programs on it we can use to troubleshoot.

Hey guys, I am new to this forum. I have several issues with my son's computer. Ok to start I was trying a software for my mother to see if it could do any damage for them to use at their office. Software used: WinCleaner Complete PC Care
Computer: Emachine
Problem: System shutdown
Another Problem: Operating System Not found

This is what I have tried so far.
I tried using the Restore CD: Restore XP; Get error message cannot open Ghosterr.txt, then get 2nd error message 11030 - Invalid Drive

Tried using operating system cd; gets to Xp set-up: have all three options to choose from ever time I click an option I get a dark blue screen: STOP SCREEN

My HP Omnibook VT6200 was working fine up until the point it wouldn't work at all. It went to a fatal error screen that ended with a physical memory dump. Now when I try to boot, I get the HP screen and can go to the bios, but after that it does nothing but say operating system not found. I've been told it could be a virus, power supply problem or hard drive issue. I'm thinking hard drive, but I don't know that much about them. It's been this way for a few months now, and on two occassions it actually started back up. One time I got all the way to the desktop with no problems at all before it crashed again. The second time it got through a scandisk check and then on to the welcome screen for Win XP before it ground to a halt and eventually popped up the fatal error screen again. Please let me know if you have any ideas.

My husbands computer, an older HP pavilion running Windows XP home w/SP2 suddenly can't find the operating system. I have tried to boot into safe mode as well as get into the BIOs and nothing seems to work. It starts at the blue HP screen, then immediately goes to the black screen saying Operating system not found.

Upon seeing this, I tried to find the restore disks. The computer was given to us and now I realize there are no disks to restore it. I have 3 Windows XP disks, one that came with my computer which is Windows XP Media Center and one is Windows XP Pro and another that came on a SONY running XP home. Would any of these work to repair his computer, or does it have to be the original disk.

Another option I have thought of is, I received a new hard drive in the mail yesterday that I plan to place into my computer. Could I temporarily install it into his and install the Windows XP Pro to it then use it to read the other drive and get his files off. I then could redo his hard drive without losing everything he had on it. I was supposed to back it up yesterday and put it off. Can't believe I did that. Oh well, will have to make the best of it.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks
Peg

also when i go into bios how do i do a hdd test run as i cant find my hdd anyway

Answer:No operating system found please help

If youre BIOS is not recognizing you're HDD you might want to open you're computer up and check if its connected right and if it is working at all. And you obviously not going to be able to install OS if there is nothing for it to install on. If the HDD is not working, you can easily buy a new one they are pretty cheap you can get one under 50 bucks, just make sure it is compatible with you're system.

Is the hard drive detected? If not, a connection is loose or it has failed completely. If so, it has a defect and you should check it out (e.g., maybe there is a diagnostic in the BIOS) before trying to reinstall or recover the OS.

Hi there,
This is with respect to the issues which i am facing with my Sony vaio e series laptop. Hope you will be able to help me out here.
Background:
I formatted C drive. Then I went to install the OS windows 7 ultimate as per the normal process. But it didn't let me to proceed further at the installing page.
Issue:
The issue due to which it didn't let proceed was showing the message as,
"Cannot continue installation due to GPT partition".
So I then backup the data and changed the hard disk partition to NPR, and again tried to run the installation setup, but now it gave me message "operating system not found".

So could you please help me out here?

Hopefully my post will help others with a similar problem. If you have the problem Operating System Not Found when booting up your computer, it may be due to it overheating like me. Also, my computer's light indicating it was accessing the hard drive would constantly be on. To fix it I simply cool it down in front of a large fan for about 10 minutes and it works again until I next shut it down. Just recently though I had installed a second fan in my computer to eliminate the need for me to do that to make it more convenient. It was successfully installed and I enjoyed several days worth of not having to leave my computer on to avoid the problem, not taking it to a fan to cool it down, and having the light not be on which made my computer faster ( but louder ). But after the first couple of days, my fan still works ( I can still feel cool air coming from the back), but it seems to have no effect, I feel it may have even made my computer slower than it initially was. Why is my fan no longer effective and how can I make it effective again? How can I prevent the light that indicates it is accessing the hard drive ( the one with the picture of the cylinder ) to stop being on and rather occasionally blink? Is there any effective way to keep my computer cool that is cheap?

Answer:Operating System Not Found

Unless your computer is very, very hot... 65degreesC, heat should not be the problem... but the drive could be defective... particularly if the computer has slowed down.

But it could also be an infestation of a virus or malware.

I did the conversion from Windows 7 to Windows 10 about 1.5 months ago.
This is a Dell Vostro w/Intel Corei5 desktop

All was fine until I attempted to wake the computer from sleep mode recently and got the following error.

An operating system was not found. Try disconnecting any drives that don't contain an operating system
Press Ctrl+Atl+Del to restart

I disconnected the two external drives I had connected and tried again with the same result.

On startup, I've hit F12 to run through the Dell ePSA Pre-boot system assessment and it passes all the tests
System, Cables, OS boot Path, Hard drive, cd rom drive, video card, cpu fan, system fan processor and memory.

I have the original 7, 64 bit installation disks, but nothing for Windows 10. What's the best way to get this thing going again?
I appreciate any help you all can give me.....

Answer:An operating system was not found......

This may indicate your Windows boot configuration has become corrupted or you have a disk error.

I suggest you boot from your Windows 10 installation CD / USB drive and try the startup repair option. See https://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/2...dows-10-a.html You will need to create a Windows 10 installation disk if you don't have one using the Windows Media Creation Tool. I turned on my computer and got a message "no operating system found." Does this mean I got a virus? My Dell computer is only two years old. I went back to Dell and all they said was "nice". I wanted to know how to check the BIOS settings. Do I have to reload the OP disc that came with puter? Would appreciate any help.

Now when i push the 1 prompt theres a topic that says it will re-install windows xp on my pc. it also has a message that says do u want to back up files before proceeding and restart press any key to continue. How many partition to you have on your hard disk. Do you have any important files on your computer. Continue to same procedure without the option of back up files in case in you donot have important files on your computer. Or else install on another primary partiton If you have more than one partition on your hard drive.

Hello,

I am trying to help a family member fix their Presario 700 Laptop using XP. When I attempt to boot up, I receive the message ?Operating System Not Found?. I am able to get into the BIOS screens. It has been suggested by my research that I first check whether the hard drive is recognized. Where in the BIOS screens do I check for this? The title is PhoenixBIOS Setup Utility. I see verbiage that says:

Parallel Port is enabled
Mode: ECP/EPP
Base I/O Address: 378
DMA Channel 3

The next screen lets you choose from where to boot up from. The Hard Drive option will yield the ?Operating System Not Found? message?

Answer:Operating System Not Found

if you can get into bios, in the first section or option you should see the hard drive, and opposite it you should see auto, click on it just to make sure it is registered by bios, then press Esc and then go to the second section "advance" in there you should see boot order click on it then make sure the order set is first your hdd , you can disable other options. then click on Esc then save and exit . if prob still persit then it is likley you had partition and the boot order has been corrupted

Hi, my Acer Aspire One was upgraded to Windows 10. Eventually, I ran into some issues with the start menu not popping up, so I decided to run a clean reset of Windows 10. The reset failed, so I turned off the notebook. When I turned it back on, the message "An operating system wasn't found. Try disconnecting any drives that don't contain an operating system. Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart," popped up. My first option was to try to use either f2 or f12 to see if there was some way to get around the issue, but then I remembered that, recently, my notebook had stopped responding to those commands. I do have a USB Logitech K120 keyboard hooked up to it (since the original keyboard messed up,) but it had been working fine for those commands and such up until now.

Today, I downloaded Win 10 using the Media Creation Tool in an attempt to create a bootable USB drive. I plugged that in, yet it doesn't seem to recognize it at all. The same message pops up as before. My acer doesn't have a CD-ROM or anything of the sort, so the USB appears to be my only hope. Is there anything that I can do? I'm hoping there's a way I can force the notebook to recognize the USB, or at least boot into the f2 or f12 commands to see if I can use them in any way. Thank you.

Answer:Operating System Not Found

Any chance the original keyboard F12 key works?

I have a Acer travel mate 2420 laptop, which has started playing up. When turned on it gives the message "Operating system not found" I can still get into the BIOS screen. Is this likely to be a problem with the windows XP, or a problem with the hard drive?I can't find my Windows set up disc to try to reinstall, and don't want to buy another one if it isn't going to resolve the problem.I'd be grateful for any advice.

Answer:Operating system not found

It sounds like the BIOS can`t see the Hard Disk Drive and therefore "Operating system not found". This might indicate a complete failure of the drive. You say it has started to play up - If you can get it to boot - backup now!You could see if the BIOS identifies the drive correctly. If you remove the HDD and then replace it that might make a difference by ensuring the contacts are clean. Otherwise I would suggest putting it into a USB caddy and seeing if you can see the data on another computer.Failing that perhaps a Repair install of XP?

Hello, I hope you are all well. I have just had a laptop dropped off by my bro in law. It's a samsung R519

normal boot basically advises operating system not found.

system tools:

start up repair = cannot repair this problem "startuprepairoffline"
system restore= nothing available
recovery management = can't select any of the options to restore to factory settings anyway

what are my options, is the hd dead?

Answer:Operating System not found

what are my options, is the hd dead?Click to expand...

No. It's a bad bootsector or a bad master boot record. and possibly boot.ini needs to be rewritten as well

fixmbr
fixboot

from the recovery console.

if boot.ini messed up too:

bootcfg /rebuild

^ from recovery console

I would try the first two commands first though.

If your Laptop is not under warranty, With the battery out and power cord unplugged, Pull out the Hard drive which will be on the side held in with one phillips screw. If not then your hard drive might be bad follow the next steps below to back up your personal files like documents, photos, videos, etc... if possibe. Then to test the drive follow the steps using UBCD.

Hi peeps, I am bad with computers so bear with me please. My Windows XP laptop has been going nuts over the last few days, specifically windows 'encountering a problem' or 'finding an error' and shutting down. Last night was one of those deals again, the computer froze so I tried restarting it, I tried a few times as it was slow to restart and once on the desktop page it froze again, finally when it froze again as it was restarting I unplugged the power cable and the battery so that it would turn off. After about an hour, when I started my computer again it has been doing this same thing til now, it goes to Managed PC Boot Agent MBA 4.36, and Pre Boot Execution Creation PXE 2.43 and then it lists PXE E.53 'no boot filename received', and then on a blank screen it says 'operating system not found'. Obviously my main concern is if I can get back my files on the C; drive, so could anyone tell me what's up with this situation? Thank you.

I was moving parts for my bro's comp to another case, and now when I turn it on it says "Operating System not found". I turn it off and turn it on again, it runs fine. I found out that it happens when I shut off the computer and the first turning on of the computer says that but the second time is fine. So every other reboot is fine. How do I fix this?

Answer:operating system not found

sounds like a bad hard drive, that i needs almost a "jump start" to get it going. looks like it may not be powering on fast enough for the sytem to boot to it and needs that second off then on to give it time to spin up.

Hi, My HP Mini seems to come up with the "Operating System Not Found" error most times it reboots. The last time was when it had to do a Windows Update. It rebooted to finish but came up with that error. I have found that if I unplug the PC for several minutes and plug back in and the press the power button it boots normally again. How do I prevent this error from happening? Thank you in advance.

Hey. my dad just gave me a used computer. It works. However when I tried to swap the hard drive from my old computer and then start it up it reads "OPERATING SYSTEM NOT FOUND". When I put it back in my old computer it works fine. Also the Hard drive that came with it boots up fine. What do I do?

Answer:Operating System Not Found

You can not just transplant a harddisk from 1 PC to another. The installed Windows has all registry entries for the hardware of the other PC, so unless both PCs are identical in hardware, it will almost never work.
Also check for Master/Slave settings on the rear of the HD.
PCs can only boot from HD if the 'bootloader' is on the first partition of the first harddisk of the first IDE-controller (or from SATA/SCSI).

My roommate has this big 17 inch hp pavilion dv9000, it's got 2 hard drives.
The other day I knocked it off the table and a USB plug hit the ground breaking the USB port which in turn pushed up against the SATA connector on the mobo and cracked it right off.
Now the computer gives "operating system not found" right after power on.
well that's not surprising since one of the HDDs is not connected.
I tried swapping the HDDs but that didnt work, I got the same message.
Just now I popped in an Ubuntu 9.04 disk and reinstalled it to the working hard drive, and that went fine, until I restarted it and got the same "operating system not found"
What gives?

Any help is muuucchhh appreciated. Thanks.

Answer:Operating system not found, help plz!

Your computer is trying to boot from the network because it does not see your hard drive. I believe pressing F2 on a dell at boot will let you access the BIOS settings. Does the BIOS see your hard drive? I am pretty sure the standard drive is a 8GB SSD.

My Gateway laptop using Vista will randomly restart, then stall on the black screen that says "Operating System Not Found." Usually, with a hard reboot, it will eventually find the desktop, but this can take a very long time, up to 30 minutes.

Originally, everything was fine until the computer suddenly became very slow and balky while surfing the Web one day. After it became essentially non-functional, I reinstalled a clean version of Vista with the recovery CD, and everything seemed fine for a day or two before the slowness and random restarts started happening again.

Besides the Adobe 8 flash player, all I have dowloaded since the reinstall are Avira Free antivirus and RegDefense registry cleaner, neither of which seem able to scan completely or update themselves before the computer crashes.

If I can get to the desktop and start Internet Explorer, I can usually navigate quickly and easily as if nothing at all is wrong, but it may take a couple hours to get to that point.

What the heck is going on here? Should I replace the hard drive?

Answer:Operating system not found

Hello Shanker,

In case it may be the hard drive, then I would recommend that you create a set of recovery discs if you have not already or this is the same type of recovery CD you mentioned using. This way you can restore your Vista using them if needed. You should also backup anything that you do not want to lose to be safe as well.

You might see if running a startup repair may help. I would avoid running a registry cleaner. They tend to do more harm than good, and could be part of your problem.

You may need to do a factory restore again.

Hope this helps some,
Shawn

I have an hp g6032ea laptop with vista home premium.
it was recently dropped and now on start up all we get is a black screen with operating system not found.
I suspect that the hard drive is either scratched or cracked as it makes a rather ominous clicking sound.
I have a brand new 160gb hard drive which i have fitted and a recovery disc which i purchased from HP as the machine did not come with one.
when the new drive is inserted if I boot from the recovery cd it starts the process then puts up a message stating that the laptop is not supported by the recovery disc and switches itself off.

does anyone have any idea what I am doing wrong?
this is driving me nuts and it will shortly be leaving by the nearest window

When I started up my laptop (A sony VAIO with Windows Vista), it made a ticking noise and displayed some text that said something like "Operating system not found", so I force restarted it, it did the same thing, I restarted again, and got the same message and ticking noise. I shut it down, removed the mouse and internet cable etc and started it up again, and it worked, so I started it in safe mode. I scanned it for viruses and found and removed the following - Exploit:Win32/Pdfjsc.FS, Worm:Win32/Orbina!rts and VirTool:JS/Obfuscator.H.

I have posted this in a new thread, because it may or may not be related to my other issue here: http://forums.techguy.org/windows-vista/968143-svchost-exe-using-up-memory.html

I am not too sure what I should do now, and whether the removal of the viruses has fixed my computer and if I should turn it off or not.

Any help would be appreciated

Answer:Operating System Not Found

Ticking noise is bad, might be a hardware problem. And you need to restart in and see if it will start norally.

Hello.

I have a Gateway Laptop-dont know the exact model. Lately, I've noticed that sometimes when I boot up the computer, it gives me an "Operating System Not Found" error. It doesnt do this everytime, only sometimes. Usually when this happens, I can wait a few minutes and restart and XP will begin to load normally.

Also, there is a noticable clicking noise coming from the computer when I use it for an extended time. Is this due to overheating?

Thanks for your help.

Roger

Answer:Operating System Not Found

Wow first time I've heard of someone recovering from an "Operating system not found" message. Usually that means you need to either repair to replace missing/corrupt files or have to reinstall the operating system altogether.

If I was you I would start by backing up any important files you may have on your computer.

The clicking could be an internal fan catching on something could be dust bunnies or some other foreign object lodged in there. I wouldn't recommend taking apart your laptop to amend that issue but if your laptop is still under warranty it might be a good idea to send it in and have it checked out.

Laptops are known for overheating issues they have all kinds of different peripherals that can help with that. Usually propping it something that will allow the air to flow beneath it will help but they have all kinds of stuff out there just gotta do a little research.

I have a Sony vaio, I was just about to backup my files when my computer powered off. When I turnt it back on, I had a message saying ' operating system not found'. I am sure I had a legal version of Windows 7. I've tried to reboot it using the command line, from a usb. Please let me know if there's anything else I can do.

Thanks

Answer:Operating system not found

Boot into the BIOS and see if the HDD is recognized.

The error you noted has nothing to do with your OS being legal or not. It simply means that the computer cannot find an OS to boot. Which typically means the HDD has failed (or become corrupted).

You didn't mention how old that computer is, but that warning message is usually a sign that the hard drive has died and needs to be replaced.
