I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi there!

I'm unable to copy/move folders from my PC to my camera. But I'm able to copy individual photos and files.

Can anyone help me out here?

Answer:Cannot copy folders to camera but can copy individual files

Most likely the camera firmware does not handle folders.
Is there any way to create a folder on the camera?

Hi again everyone!

Thanks again for all the help you have given me over the last few months.

I needed help in setting up my computer for a GPS system. I have read that I need to set up the computer so it will copy all files & folders including hidden and system files.

How do I have Windows set to copy all files & folders including hidden & sys. files?

Can someone help me? I do not know how to set this up.

Answer:How do I have Windows set to copy all files & folders including hidden & sys. files?

Under Tools>Folder Options
View>Advance Settings: Hidden files and folders
click 'Show hidden files and folders'

So when you copy things, you can also copy the hidden stuff.

I cannot move or copy files, folders, or pictures when using the XP files & folders task manager LINKS on the left side of window. These links will no longer move or copy files to new locations. I just get instant hangup when I click these links provided in XP view. When I try to close the hungup window it shows that it is not responding. I find no alerts in control panel/administrative tools/event viewer.
I am still able to copy/paste the files and also able to drag & drop. This is a slight inconvenience & hopefully fixable?

I know to do a set of files you get -

Const OverwriteExisting = True
Set objFSO = CreateObject("Scripting.FileSystemObject")
objFSO.CopyFile "C:\*.txt" , "D:\Archive\" , OverwriteExisting

What I need is to have this include subdirectories and I also need it to not move files that are already existing with the same modified date (I.E. I only want to move new files and all folders.

Any ideas?

Answer:Copy files and folders in VBS?

You may consider Shell( )ing out to XCOPY. There are command line switches that will do what you want.

Copies files and directory trees.

XCOPY source [destination] [/A | /M] [/D[:date]] [/P] [/S [/E]] [/V] [/W]
[/C] [/I] [/Q] [/F] [/L] [/G] [/H] [/R] [/T] [/U]
[/K] [/N] [/O] [/X] [/Y] [/-Y] [/Z]

source Specifies the file(s) to copy.
destination Specifies the location and/or name of new files.
/A Copies only files with the archive attribute set,
doesn't change the attribute.
/M Copies only files with the archive attribute set,
turns off the archive attribute.
/D:m-d-y Copies files changed on or after the specified date.
If no date is given, copies only those files whose
source time is newer than the destination time.
Specifies a list of files containing strings. Each string
should be in a separate line in the files. When any of the
strings match any part of the absolute path of the file to be
copied, that file will be excluded from being copied. For
example, specifying a string like \obj\ or .obj will exclude
all files underneath the directory obj or all files with the
.obj extension respectively.
/P Prompts you before creating each destination file.
/S Copies directories and subdirectories except empty ones.
/E Copies directories and subdirectories, including empty ones.
Same as /S /E. May be used to modify /T.
/V Verifies each new file.
/W Prompts you to press a key before copying.
/C Continues... Read more

I was working on a computer running XP Home. I was trying to backup the documents/files to an external hard drive. The account I was logged into was an administrator account, but not THE administrator account. I tried to backup using the XP backup button through manage HD functions. The button for backup didn't even exist! Just blank space (perhaps that's a non-feature of Home that exists in Pro). Then I tried to copy/paste user docs folders. Some copied over just fine but three users accounts came up with the same error when I tried to paste them. Something like "cannot be created or replaced" along with a comment that it could be hardware or software problem. Also, I could not open the main user folders "access denied" even when logged on as that user. Yes, it seems the OS is fubar but that increases the need to do a backup so the HD can be nuked and reinstalled.

I tried connecting an external HD to the computer, booting up the computer using the primary HD. When I had problems with the OS, I removed the HD, changed it to slave and put it in another computer so I could go around the OS. Of course, I also connected the external HD. Still no joy. I also tried another external HD. Anything I can do from command line? Any ideas for me?

Answer:can't copy/paste folders & files

You could boot into safe mode and try copy/paste. Sometimes it will work from safe mode. Do you have the Windows Home cd? By default, Home doesn't install the back-up utility. You have to install it manually. 1.After inserting the CD-ROM, open Control Panel's "Add or Remove Programs" utility. In the "Add or Remove Programs" utility", click on the "Add New Programs" button, then click on the "CD or Floppy" button. 2. In the "Run Installation Program" dialog box that appears, navigate to the VALUEAD/MSFT/NTBACKUP folder on the CD-ROM and select the file NTBACKUP.MSI. Click on the "Finish" button. The Backup utility will be installed. Taken from where there are furthur instructions/information concerning the back-up utility.

Hi, everybody.

I have created a MDB file which I am using with secured.mdw.

This database contains some important data therefore I am looking for ways to stop this file from being copied.

can u suggest some ways where this copy protection can be implemented even at the OS level i.e (windows os all variants).

waiting for some smart ways!!!

Answer:copy protrection of files/folders

Don't know of a way to keep it from being copied except password protect it from being opened.

But if they have to open it they can copy it.

The only other thing I can think of is to set the permission to only those who you trust with it.

You might want to check this site out and when there if you can't find a solution email Dreamboat and ask her. She will be more than glad to help you if it can be done.

If so post back I'd like to know myself if it can be.

I posted this in the Vista section when I found that I could not right click on items(files or folders) in my windows browser. When I would the browser would lock up and give me the program is not responding message until I ended it with task manager. Last night while typing a post I hit backspace and it returned the browser to the previous viewed page.

Today I noticed that I not only could I not right click, but when I checked a file and hit delete it did the same thing. So I can't delete, copy and right click on files or folders.

The last thing I noticed is that I can't open up a program from the recently used section over the "start" button on the bottom left. I have to actually click on a file or go to the All Programs folders.

Here is what I posted in the Vista Section..... I can right click to copy and paste from Internet Explorer apparently.
I can't use right click without my computer locking up. If I click on a file I get a program not responding error and have to use Task Manager to shut it down. If I right click on start buttom or other places on the desktop, the computer just locks in "think mode".

Ran Malwarebytes Anti Malware.. nothing.

Ran CCleaner and it "fixed" what it found but nothing changed.

Any thoughts on what I can do here?

I was able to use right click to get this info. Nothing comes up for each field though??

Can't copy or paste files or folders in windows 98 or even send them to the a drive.the files or folders just go ghost like.

Answer:Can't copy or paste files or folders in windows 98

I think that they are meant to dim (go ghost like) when you copy.Have you tried right clicking a file, selecting copy and then checking what is in the clipboard? You can use the clipboard viewer for this which you should find in Start, Accessories/System tools - it won't show you the file, just the name, probably with some ~ characters. If you can see the file name the copy has worked; we can then go on to see why you cannot paste.

What I'm lookig to do is very basic.
I want to get a 2nd hard drive or external HD, and have files/folders copied, backedup, mirrored etc..... to it

Features would need to be such that it does this on some schedule, can detech and update only the differences.... even when files have been moved to other folders etc....

Looking for something basic, straightforward, bulletproof.

Note: I have researched this a bit and see a lot mentioned but most seems to be regarding sync'ing across network or to cell phone etc...

My use would be for a single PC with 2 HD's

Answer:Mirror, copy, sync... Folders/files

You could use RAID 1, mirroring two drives. But that copies everything.

Okay, here is a good question, maybe one that has been asked before but here it goes.

I like most people have an ext hard drive (multiple actually) and I update it weekly, monthly depending on which one, in this case my music. I do download alot of music and have been copying all of my Vinyl (big black diskshaped media used to play music and such with a record player) and my old tape collection (again a type of media that was used to play music or other media). Now when I copy the "My Music" folder to my ext. hard drive it tells me the usual song and dance such and such file already exists do you want to replace with this such and such file, click yes, yes to all or no. If I click yes to all just to put the new files in the folder it overwrites the existing files and sometimes and this is what really gets my teeth clinched and my heart rate to near explosive levels, the overwrite corrupts a song or two or who knows how many and I have to find that song again and reupload or download or copy from my aging music media (some of which I am suprised to get that one more play our of).

Now this is not just in my music but in all the folders / files I copy and back up. What I would like to know is, is there a way to copy a folder with new added files without overwriting the data that already exists? I am using Windows XP pro on a Dell Vostro 1000, I don't think the computer matters as this happens on my work computers too and other computers I have including my Mac.... Read more

Answer:copy folders with multiple files without overwriting

FWIW: I copy music, video, and other files...into folders where the same file or earlier file with same name exists...and I don't recall any instance of file corruption from such.

The obvious (IMO) answer is...either rename the file or copy it to a different folder.

Windows cannot allow 2 files with the same coexist in the same folder, same file path. Such would lead to chaos for the system.

Thus the overwriting mechanism when a filename existing is added to a file location already occupied.

I need to pull out all the flac files and move them to a new drive keeping the original folder structures on the new drive, as they are by artist/album and I have way too many to do this manually..

This must be very simple to you computer experts.
A friend left my country and returned to the States. But she left her pendrive behind. I call it pendrive but in many places they call it flashdrive. Same thing we are talking about I believe.
It contained only a small variety of country music that barely made a dent in her 8 GB flashdrive.
She apparently is no fan of classical music except for Chopin and other relaxing stuff. But she is curious.
I think that, if she begins to listen to some other classical music, of which I have a vast collection, she may begin to appreciate some. There are very many composers who have produced smoothing tracks like the ones she says she likes. Even J.S. Bach, whom she says she cannot bear.
I copied different tracks from different composers and put each composer in a folder + some important tracks of a few composers on another folder.
For instance, I put Bach (a small selection of works) in one folder, but opened another folder for Brandemburg concertos and another for major organ works.
In the case of Mozart there is one folder dedicated exclusively to his famous Requiem.
In all, I created 101 folders in the pendrive and filled it up. And 7.48 GB of music is a hell f a lot of music.
But I am a music fan and have a very extensive collection from which I chose some tracks and, depending on the composer, put those tracks in a folder which I named by the Composer's name.
Now I... Read more

I suggest that you...remove both of the programs you mentioned....then run the sfc /scannow command and the chkdsk /r command.
Bleeping Computer DOES NOT recommend the use of registry cleaners/optimizers for several reasons.  Registry cleaners are extremely powerful applications that can damage the registry by using aggressive cleaning routines and cause your computer to become unbootable.

A careless change to the operating system configuration in the registry could cause irreversible damage, so it is usually only installer programs which perform changes to the registry database during installation/configuration and removal.  If a user wants to edit the registry manually, Microsoft recommends that a backup of the registry is performed before the change.  Editing the registry is sometimes necessary when working around Windows-specific issues e.g. problems when logging onto a domain can be resolved by editing the registry.  The Windows registry can be edited manually using programs such as regedit.exe, although these tools do not expose some of registry'... I want to write a batch file that do this for me:

- makes a directory with the "" as the directory name,
- copies files and folders from a TEST directory to above destination,
- copies only new (or modified) files from the TEST directory to a separate folder.

Any Idea?

Answer:a simple batch file for copy files and folders

To create a directory with the date and time as the name, In a batch file use:

set DirName=%date:~-4,4%.%date:~-7,2%.%date:~0,2%.%time:~0,2%.%time:~3,2%
MD \%DirName%

Then in the same batch file use robocopy to copy files to the new directory

robocopy TEST %DirName% /e

you need to add your own paths and read the robocopy help for the right switches you need.
By default Robocopy copies only files that don't exist in the target directory but because you are creating a new directory every time it will copy every thing in TEST

You could use the /A switch which only copies files with the Archive attribute set.

Ok so I recently downloaded a giant ZIP file that contains all the material I'm going to need for my college course. New to this list...

We have a proprietary audio player for MP3 files. The files have to be in a specific folder structure. The players have internal memory and can also play audio from a microSD card that is prepared (loaded) from a PC.
After much experimentation, we have isolated the problem to Windows 8.1. Formatting and loading the SD on Windows 7 or Windows XP works flawlessly.
The same SD card that was prepared on WinXP or Windows 7 and using the same USB cable and card reader will NOT work if prepared on Windows 8 (the player shuts down after attempting to read from the SD). We use copy/paste or drag/drop to copy the folder structure to the SD card.
The files on the SD are readable and can be played by a number of programs with no problems when accessed via File Explorer in Windows 8 using a USB SD card reader.

We've looked into this quite a bit and can find no problems other than something must be slightly different with Windows 8 copy of folders and/or files to a microSD card.
Here's what we've checked:

1) File-compare executed between the SD and source on the HD - no differences.
2) Checked for hidden or system files - none.
3) Executed CHKDSK on the SD card - no errors.
4) Executed both Quick and Full Format on the SD card before copy - no difference.
5) Even tried formatting the SD on Win7 and then doing the copy on Win8. Does not help.

Any ideas or suggestions will be greatly appreciated! TIA!

So exactly what is the issue? Does it work or not, when the card is left in the device, when you connect the device to the computer?

What is the mfg. & model of the device you are having issues with? How old is the device & card?

I want to copy the contents of pen drive to E drive. The pendrive drive is F. Now i want all the folders and files to have the same date it was as in the pen drive, when i stored .
Normally when i copy, all the files retain original date but folders get todate. Meaning less if date specific creation of folder is needed.
I heard that robocopy feature in command would give me a way to it. Reading in microsoft or in other forums, including in this forum would not solve my problem. as it is total technical in nature of using switches in command.
My specific need is date of the folders and folder in the pendrive F to be copied to E: in one new folder, say Eendrive copy .
Dcopy is one of the sub command. I want total command for this . There may be experts in this commands. Please let me know , how to accomplish this. The command help of microsoft only know to the tech experts, who knows all /\ switches. As a newbie to this subject, i do not know how to issue the command prompt command.

(you know what? BSOD just happened right before i click the submit button. -_-* luckily Chrome's restored back this page and i don't have to type everything again..)

BSOD started like a week ago. I've been trying to find ways of why it happened or what to do stuff, found one, tried it but to no avail.. and my pc really crashes a lot. I found this place a few days ago and read a few posts. Read the posting instructions for BSOD and i downloaded the SF Diagnostic Tool. I've attached the zip file.

That's one problem. The second problem is, on 1st November i found out that i could not rename any files that i wanted and i was using safe mode too. so i tried to play around with cut, copy, paste or delete and nothing happens. except for cut maybe, because it greyed out when i cut but it won't copy to anywhere else. even if i use drag and drop nothing happens. the same goes for copy-paste with keyboards. no errors warnings or messages, it just does nothing. my recycle bin seems so lonely nowadays..

oh, i've tried some of the methods suggested in some pages here by using unlocker or lockhunter but ... though it seems i can rename the files now by using lockhunter.

the result for SF Diagnostic Tool didn't go to my desktop either. it ended up in my other disk not OS.

Any kind of help is really really appreciated..

I would like to know how I can copy the full internet path to public folders and files in Windows 7.

In Windows XP, I was able to right click a folder or file, select copy path --> copy full internet path, and then paste the result into emails / documents / etc in order to direct work colleagues to files without having to send them as an attachment (using up my limited space in my outlook client).

I'm new to the forums, but would really appreciate any help you can provide!

Dear Tech Support Representatives,

Hello. Last week I printed out some material from my USB pendrive from an internet cafe. (I do not have my own computer at home).

Later I discovered that all the folders on my USB have been changed to shortcuts, with little arrows in the lefthand corner.

I need to retrieve the data on my USB, otherwise I could just format the pendrive.

I have already run Malwarebytes, SuperAnti-Spyware, and Junk Removal Tool. However the shortcuts on my USB pendrive are still there.

Would you someone please give me step-by-stap instructions on how to convert the folders back to normal and how to remove any other malware that may have spread to my computer's registry, etc?

I will send first my Hijack This log, the the DDS (2 logs), and then the GMER.

Thank you for your help.

Since upgrading to Windows 10 I can't open html files stored on an external pendrive. The files are the originals of a website. Other sorts of files don't seem to be affected
The online versions of the web pages work fine, and copies made from the pendrive to my hard drive will open fine too.
But if I click on the originals on the pendrive I just get a blank browser window (Edge) or my usual homepage (Chrome).
I've tested this with two different pendrives to see if the pendrive could have developed a fault, but with the same result, no webpage, just a blank browser window or my usual homepage.
I've tested the pendrives on a non-windows 10 computer, on which they work fine - clicking the icon opens the file in my usual browser.
Is there something obvious I'm missing? Any suggestions welcome!

I'm using Windows 7 Home premium. I have a lot of files on my pendrive, and have never had any problems until yesterday. All of a sudden my laptop won't recognise my pendrive, it tells me it is empty or, when I do actually manage to see the files and folders stored on it, it will not open them. When I check properties, I'm told the disk is completely empty. I have three different USB ports on my laptop, and yesterday one of them did allow me to access the pendrive, but today it won't and I get a message telling me to format the disk.
I've seen various solutions to this type of problem offered on the internet, but none of these work because when I use the cmd command and then type in the drive, I'm told it doesn't exist or cannot be found.
Can someone please help me????

Answer:URGENT!! full pendrive is apparently 'empty' and I cannot access files

You can try this. Put in the pendrive, let it *attempt* to load. Then instead of going to windows explorer, go into Control Panel -> Device Manager (as admin). You see my picture, open up those sections and look to see if you see any yellow or grey triangles next to any of the items, in fact I would open up each section and look just in case. This is to see if all your drivers are working. Report back. I will try to help if this does not work.

I am looking for a file copy program that will simply copy files without stopping to ask stupid questions or quitting in the middle of a job.

I use Windows Explorer now and drag and drop a bunch of folders from various computers to an external drive. Most of the time I am doing over 100,000 files and it takes 20minutes plus. The time is no problem because I just go off and do something else. The problem is when I come back after 20 minutes to see 5% done and a stupid question like ?xxx is a system file... are your sure you want to copy?. Why can?t I answer these questions up front rather than having to wait 5 minutes between questions?

What is worse is when it hits something like a long or invalid file name or my virus checker pops up to tell me that one of the files is adware. Explorer stops and tells me the problem but when I click OK the program simply stops leaving me with the problem with having to figure out what files it did and did not copy. Is there a program that will remember and continue where it left off?

In the Navigation tool, Windows 10 provides a list of ways to access folders and files, including Quick Access and a group of other file or folder names. If I click on something in the group of folder names, not all files in that folder are shown eg. 'Documents' is one folder name, but if I search under OS C: and find my 'User' name and the the relevant folder, there are more files there than show up using the group. This is frustrating as looking under 'OS C: Users' is time consuming and requires lots of clicks, and I'd have thought the main purpose of having groups listed was to avoid this.

Answer:In Windws 10, why do folders in libraries or Quick Access not show all files in the actual folders?

This is frustrating as looking under 'OS C: Users' is time consuming and requires lots of clicks, and I'd have thought the main purpose of having groups listed was to avoid this. how big is the difference? Do you see files (that you use) in C but not in Libraries - my documents?

I found this GREAT FREE program which can help to protect your files from all kind of Ransomware.
At the end is my video test and here is article from about this program.
The program is Abandonware but is working very good.

Secure Folders is a free program for Windows that is available as a portable version and installer. It can be used to hide or lock folders, set them to read-only or block the execution of files.

If you share your computer at times, for instance in your family or when friends or colleagues ask you whether they can access it, then you may want an option to protect certain files or folders from accidental exposure.

Maybe you don't want someone else to spot your Justin Bieber wallpaper collection, financial documents or video files that you have downloaded from the Internet. Whatever it is, Windows does not really provide options to protect data from others if the same account is being used.

Note: it is best obviously to use different accounts, for instance a guest account for occasional users and accounts for colleagues or family members who work with the PC regularly.

Encryption is a solution but only if you keep the data encrypted while the computer is being used. It won't help you if the encrypted drive that you store all your secrets on is mounted at the time someone else accesses your PC.

Help! I'm stuck.
I have a folder from which I need to delete a number of files but for each attempt to delete a file the error message comes up "Can't read from source disc or file". And yet the file can be opened in an application and the contents appear undamaged.
Thye same goes fort attemting to delete a folder, - the same error message appears. - "Can't read from source disc or file".
If I attempt to create a new folder so that I can download some images fromm my camera I get the error message "Unable to create the folder "New Folder"., - File system error (65535)".
Basically, the files / folders all seem to be OK and can be read by applications (Photoshop etc.) but I can't delete old ones or create noew folders. Any clues? Has some sort of overall disc protection been applied?

I'm trying to design a Win 10 (x64 pro) autoinstallation setup using Windows System Image Manager and answer files so I can save some time at work. I've only just recently started with it but I'm beginning to learn, thanks in part due to the tutorials on this website.

My goal is to setup a self-contained Win10 install that runs from a USB, make partitions without any(little) user input and contains one main account, has custom background, custom User Logo, several installed third-party applications, custom Start-menu Tiles, custom start-page for webbrowsers, custom energy settings and more of the same. I've done the whole capture image into a custom install.wim but I can't get it to work as I wish and I'd rather keep at it with Autounattend.xml only.

I've successfully experimented with, and implemented, several of the above mentioned "to-do"-list items. But so far what I've not been able to do despite browsing soooooo many online articles/tutorials that my eyes bleed is the whole $oem$ folder/configuration share/configuration set in working order.

Here is what I do (when I fail):
I have a folder full of third-party programs (java, adobe-reader, vlc-player, chrome etc) and backgrounds/images that I want automatically copied into the "c:\users\public\documents" folder of the destination-PC. I use Windows SIM to create a "Distribution Share"(Dist Share in short) folder on my tech-PC. Three folders are created including the "$OEM$ Folders... Read more

I want to copy a folder (containing subfolders and files) from one server to another - overwriting anything existing. Unfortunately, with the script below, it runs the first time and then gives me a permission denied on the second part (I am assuming its saying it can't overwrite the files). Has anyone else run into this or know what I can use to copy and overwrite?

*** The part of the script doing the copy ***
Set objFSO = CreateObject("Scripting.FileSystemObject")
objFSO.CopyFolder "\\server1\Setup\Tools" , "\\server2\Tools" , True

I thought maybe I could just delete the folder on server2 before the copy but that seems like extra work (that the overwrite flag should handle) and I couldn't get it to work with a folder that has subfolders.

One of the damn files was marked as read only. Took that off and HEY I can overwrite it. Amazing.

Question: Copy folders

I can't find any instruction how to do this, here goes: does anyone know how to copy a folder and then paste that folder into several or more folders in windows. At work, we are going paperless, and we had to create a folder that had to be copied into quite a lot of folders, so a lot of pasting was involved. The task is now complete but could this have been done faster? Is there a faster way to do this?

Answer:Copy folders

Are you asking if it possible to copy a folder and then paste it into several destination folders at the same time, i.e. with one paste action? If so, I don't know of a way to do this. You obviously can copy an entire folder of files, but then must paste individually into each new destination as far as I understand windows.

G'morning all,

We're looking for a program that will allow us to password-protect folders on Windows XP. I've seen all the other threads on this subject and the linked programs and web pages (e.g. PC World's article; Cryptex) but nothing that does what we want.

There are a lot of programs that come up on Google; has anyone used any of these? I've tried a few demos but I'm looking for any other recommendations.

I have a two-PC LAN-
Desktop with Vista Home Premium 32-bit, 3MB RAM, dual HDs-RAID 1.
Laptop with Vista Ultimate 64-bit, 4MB RAM. dual HDs, no RAID.
LAN is based on Dlink DIR-655 giga-switch and draft-N wireless router.
Both PCs have giga NICs.

I treat the desktop as "Home Base." When I travel, I copy (manual drag-and-drop) my personal data to the laptop across the network. If I make changes while on the road, I copy teh data back to the desktop.

I keep my personal data in lots of folders in the Public Folder on each PC.

No problems until now, I have much more data on the Desktop PC.
One folder is 66GB. Within that folder I have sub folders of 16GB and 28GB.

65GB folder will not copy to the Laptop. Copy message says "calculating" then disappears and nothing has been copied.

I cannot copy the 16GB folder to another folder on the same HD on the Desktop PC.

Why not? Is there an upper limit on size of folders/files that can be copied?

Thanks for all help.

Answer:Cannot copy Large Folders

Why not use an App to keep them synced all the time. Plenty of decent apps out there to do that. That way the application is only trying to copy files that have changed.

Could probably write a batch file to copy only files that have changes as well.

But if you insist on drag and drop then give TeraCopy a try.

I have a folder called "Test" with three subfolders called Alpha, Beta, Charlie. I have backed up the "Test" folder to an external drive using drag and drop. When I do this, I get a message, and I select "replace the files in the existing folder".

I changed the sub-folder names to One, Two, Three and re-ran the copy process.

I now have the following folders on my backup drive in the "Test" folder - Alpha, Beta, Charlie, One, Two, Three.

This is now NOT a copy of the original "Test" folder, which only has three sub-folders.

I see your anecdotal evidence and raise you mine. Windows 8 performs my copying of a TB of data from one drive to another faster, and with more information about the transfer than any previous version of Windows.

Also your hard drive is probably dead or dying.

i only want to copy the folders starting with 12, there will be a random amount of folders created starting with 12 by the end of the year it could be up to 20 folders all starting with 12, i need to use a wildcard so i don't miss any of them. i would like to put the correct process in a batch file if possible but if not i can run each night manually

i can't seem to get this to work with copy , xcopy or robocopy

copy p:\client\12*. z:\clientbak\12*. /s this is an example of what i would like to do with whatever

copy program and with the correct syntax the above doesn't work with xcopy , copy or robocopy

I would very much appreciate some help finding my missing files and folders if possible.

I am running windows Vista version 6.0, service pack 2.

I started windows, and noticed that 5 of my desktop folders were missing, and all of the files contained within. A search for document and folder names returned nothing (even with advanced search options). One of the missing folders was called "term 1". I created a new folder, and tried to change the name to term 1. A pop-up told me that this destination (desktop) already contained a folder named "term 1"- did I want to merge these folders? I was confused, because I could no longer see the original term 1 folder. I clicked "yes" hoping that a merge would result in a visible term 1 folder, but now the new folder also disappeared. After some intensive searching, I could not find any of the folders/files that were missing. Some other folders/files were still visible on my desktop though.

I restored my computer to a previous checkpoint (from 2 days ago, after a windows update). After reboot, I received a message that the restore was unsuccessful. At this point, all of my desktop folders and files were gone, aside from windows default desktop icons. A search returned no results. I remembered that restore can fail because of an AV program, so I disabled Norton. I tried to undo the restore, which was successful, but no files/folders returned. I then tried to do a restore to a checkpoint from befor... Read more

I'm running windows 7 Ultimate (up-to-date) and certain folders (mostly folders in my box sync map and program files) are treated as if they are in use by a program but process explorer tell's me that only system and explorer.exe use them. I don't know if system should be using folders or if explorer should do so even when I am not viewing the folder. I can?t overwrite the files inside but I can move or delete them and copy the file in after. I can also not rename the folders.
Any idea's of how to solve this?

Thanks in advance,

Answer:Can't move folders but can copy and delete them

It's not a good idea to mess with files and folders in the Program Files folder. The Program Files folder is a system folder and the location for your installed programs. Mess things up in there are some of your installed programs may not work correctly or not work at all. You could also mess Windows up. What is it exactly that you are trying to do?

Hi, wonder if anyone can help.

I need to copy a file to multiple folders. I have a parent folder X:\Documents with around 2000 account folders inside and I need to copy a template document to each of these folders.

I found a batch command yesterday that kind of did the job it was

For /R X:\Documents %a in (.) do copy C:\template.doc %a

I ran this and it worked so far as it copied the template to each of the user folders, however each of the account folders contained a subfolder called bills. X:\Documents\(account folder name)\Bills

The template was also copied to each of these bills folders.

So my question is how can I modify this command to copy the template just into each account folder?

Answer:Copy a file to multiple folders.

I'm not sure how you can get that command to not copy to secondary folder levels, but some tool like this might work for you:

First post here, not sure if this is the right subforum. I've searched for similar threads but didn't find any - please let me know if I missed them.

I just bought a new computer with Windows 8. It's fully updated, but I'm having a problem with the copy function. When I copy a folder with files in it, sometimes the files all show up in the destination folder without the source folder. For example, I copy folder "A" and paste it into destination folder "B." What happens is that all the files from folder "A" show up in folder "B" but without folder "A." Please let me know if this doesn't make sense.

This is frustrating especially for the complex array of folders and subfolders I am trying to copy, which would take hours to manually arrange.

More background: This hasn't happened every time. I'm copying folders and files from an external hard drive to the internal hard drive (with the OS) on my new computer. I've successfully copied a folder with not much in it to the desktop, and also one to another location. It has never worked when I've tried to copy all of my documents from the other computer - many gigabytes, thousands of files, many videos and pictures as well as MS Office files.

Is it the volume (number, size) or variety of things I'm trying to copy that's messing up? That seems like it shouldn't be a problem. It worked in Windows XP.... (my old computer).

The only next step I can think of is to be more systematic in ... Read more

Answer:Copy function does not always move folders

Yes, I found the same problem. Chronological files from 2002 to 2012 copied to Windows 8 resulted in many errors. An entire year was 'missed'. Many had incomplete days, where only half of the month was copied. I had to manually double-check the entire 30,000 files.
I have also found that the new 'delete' without the 'are you sure' option is not to be trusted, and may delete 3 to 4 consecutive files.
The system is inherently unstable for power users.

I need to create a CD containing all Gas information so I was hoping to find a way of copying the folders so that the root folders, "Property 1", "Property 2" etc are still there but only contain the Gas subfolder.

The only way I know of is to copy the whole thing somewhere else and delete the subfolders I don't want but I don't have the hard drive space - the above list is a simplified version!

Many thanks in advance.

Create sub-folder for each contact .....
Open WLM > right click at your account > New folder > enter name of a contact, i. e. Mary Jo
Go to the Imported folder > right click at Mary Jo's folder, if you have one made for her in Windows Mail, if not, right click at Mary Jo's e-mails > click Move To > navigate to Mary Jo's sub-folder > click Move.

If you do not have Move To option in your rightb click menu....
Context Menu - Add COPY TO FOLDER and MOVE TO FOLDER - Vista Forums
The tutorial works for Win 7 as well.
Go to Method One > download the reg file.

Editing :
Drag/drop has one shortcoming. It has the potential danger of dropping to the wrong folder if you let go the HOLD too soon, not to mention it is tiring to HOLD when you have a lot messages to drag/drop.
Move To or Copy To in the link I gave you is the safest and fastest way to tranfer quantity of messages of an entire folder.

Relevance 46.33% I'm seeing some very poor performance and strange issues here.

I have a DVD-R with 3 folders with each folder having about 50 pictures (each picture is about 20mb). If I open the disc and try to copy all three folder onto my HDD, you can hear the drive head seeking like crazy and I get maybe 2MB/S transfer.

If I cancel the copy the drive continues to spin and seek for quite some time even though nothing is being done? As a matter of fact, I pretty much have to eject the DVD to get the drive to stop spinning/seeking.

So...if I eject it, then reinsert it the drive is fine.

NOW...if I try and copy just one folder to my HDD, rather than selecting all 3 at the same time, the drive doesn't seek like crazy and I get my normal sustained 15-18MB/S transfer.

I have tested this on my laptop, and on another desktop computer and found the issue to be replicated on all three systems (all have different CPUs, HDDs, and DVD drives)...which are all on Win7.

So what is going on here?

Answer:Copy from DVD-R is slow with multiple folders?

If I had to guess...the files on the disk are physically in different sections so the head has to move often instead of in a more linear fashion. When you select all there folders the contents are probably getting shuffled around in the queue.

Used Sonic RecordNow to burn a backup copy of my computer documents in my XP computer. As I've done many times before.

But this time I found something strange. The files in many of the folders didn't copy correctly. Taking one folder, for example, I'll see that all of the files/subfolders up to those which start with the letter "C" were, yes, copied. But any file/folder which started with any letter after "C" did not burn.

And the same with many other folders. Up to a certain letter (could be "C", "D", "F", or any letter...each folder seems different) all the files burned correctly. But no files with a name starting with a letter subsequent to whatever that letter is.

Or, with some folders, all the files/subfolders DID copy as they should.

I tried re-burning the DVD a couple times, with a couple different brands of DVD. But the same thing happened.

Anyone ever experience such a thing before?
