Preferred Solution: Download manager to speed up download

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi,
Can anyone enlighten me on why my DSL test shows my download speed should be in the 200-300kbps range and then seconds later I try to download an actual file (for example in the 25MB range) and the download window shows 19-35kbps and takes 30 minutes?
I have tried the DSL Company suggestion of shutting down and turning off modem and restarting. that worked for a while but not anymore.
Thanks
Pat

Answer:Discrepancy between test download speed and true download speed

You need to consider the upload speed of the file server you are accessing. You can only download from someone as fast as they are willing or able to upload to you There may be heavy demand on the server, they may lack the bandwidth to provide a faster upload to you or may even have an upload cap to save bandwidth (and money).

anyone have any idea how the download accelerator software can speed up the download speed connections?

Answer:how the download accelerator software can speed up the download speed connections?

it opens multiple download streams to the same file. Each stream downloads only one part of the file. the app then reconstructs the file once all streams are completed.

its similar to Bit Torrent technology.

For some reason programs and files are taking a very long time to download (about 30 kbps), but youtube plays fine, I can go to any website and troubleshooting shows nothing wrong. I went to speedtest.net and I'm averaging about 12 mbps so files should be downloading fast.

At this point I'm stumped. This PC has a fresh install of Windows 7, up-to-date. It is a Dell OptiPlex 780.

I should have also mentioned that the Network drivers are also up-to-date.

Hi guys, I've searched for this but couldn't find the solution. The problem is that after a few minutes...like 20 or so. The download on my Windows 7 stops working...Take a look at the picture.
It says connecting and the lights on the modem start blinking as if it is downloading but it doesn't. I can still browse websites but can't download even in Opera, Mozilla or IE. I've been using Spybot and KIS [Kaspersky Internet Security] for 4 years now, so I don't think there is a problem of virus or malware. Please help!

Guys, I've updated KIS to 2010 and I think it is the problem as I exited the application and then started the download on IDMan. It started to work. But why KIS is doing this. Is there any settings problem with the firewall?? The problem still continues with KIS turned on.!!!!

I've been using IDM (6.25 build 3 most recently) happily for quite some time. For Christmas I purchased an online class which streams (?) from a .com website. I paid $128 for the class which remains online. Although I can view it anytime, I'd like to have it on my hard drive so I can put it on my laptop and watch it in bed instead of sitting at my desktop computer. Also I've purchased classes in the past and the website went out of business and *poof* my purchased classes went with them!!

When I use IDM to download the .flv file and play it back using Windows media player, I only get audio...no video.

Can anyone suggest:
-- what's going wrong?
-- a solution
-- another program I can use?

Thanks for the assist!
LuniLadi

Answer:Internet Download Manager Plays Only Audio For .flv Download

IDM is currently at 6.25 build 12. IDM only downloads files it doesn't play them. That's the job of your media player. An alternate media player you might try is VLC available at Major Geeks.

Quote:
A free download manager designed to integrate seamlessly with Windows 7 is now available from Microsoft. Dubbed the Microsoft Download Manager, the utility is designed, as the label implies, to help users administer their downloads beyond the boundaries of the browser. More often than not, downloading very large files can be problematic, especially in the context of an unreliable connection. It is precisely in scenarios like these that a download manager will carry out any download tasks to the end, unlike browsers missing this functionality.

?The Microsoft Download Manager enables you to download files from the Internet in a more reliable and faster way than using a browser alone. Using the Download Manager makes it easier to download large files such as an application or multimedia files,? Microsoft explained.

According to the Redmond company, the Microsoft Download Manager comes to the table with support not only for Windows 7, but also for Windows Vista and Windows XP SP2 and SP3. Microsoft Download Manager was designed to work with Internet Explorer 8, IE7 and IE6 but also with Firefox 3 and Firefox 2.

It looks you have a problem in IDM's dynamic file segmentation. Try to download the IDM again from its site, make a fresh install and check if the problem persists.

Hi Guys,
I recently downloaded bbc iplayer, when I click on it, it - rightly says I have no programmes to watch.

I click through the "download programmes" button which brings me to the iplayer home page - so far so good.

I select (for example) TV, John Bishops Britain, then select download options, for iplayer desktop-"click" and ....drumroll, nothing, nyada, zilch!!

I de installed and reinstalled thinking perhaps there was a corrupt file somewhere, this made no difference.

I then selected download for windows media player and got this message;

Software upgrade required
To download BBC iPlayer programmes please upgrade your version of Windows Media Player. Click here to get the latest version from Microsoft.

So far as I can see for my OS (XP pro) wmp11 IS the latest version available and the one I'm using.

It's really quite frustrating, I have had no luck on the support site or, so far by trawling through the net looking for answers. Anyone got any ideas?

Thanks in anticipation and best regards,
Brian.

Answer:BBC Iplayer download manager - wont download!!!

Instead of downloading it through the desktop program download them on line they should go strait to your Iplayer desktop
go to http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/
go to the required show
scroll under the video
click "download options"
then "for iplayer desktop"

Your computer stats (all kind) are not very helpful. What OS are you using.? Is your download manager a 3rd party software prog or are you using the capability of resuming downloads on the MS site? Another point... Every time my computer crashes??? Does that happen a lot? if so, you may have a whole different kind of problem.

Hi all:

From the MS Store.
I bought a FULL VERSION Vista Home Premium DVD actual disc not the downloaded version.
With the right to a FULL VERSION Win 7 when it releases on Oct 22nd.

I am thinking of getting it by downloading it from MS.

My question is really Simple.

How do I burn the iso to disk after Downloading it with the Download Manager to make it Bootable as if I got the actual disk?

A friend of mine said he downloaded his his was Vista without the Download Manager and there were (3)- Separate files and couldn't figure out how to make it a bootable disk so he returned it for the actual media.

NOW if I download my Win 7 Full Version disk to my Drive using the download manager, WILL IT be a single iso file so that I can burn it as a bootable disk?

And if it is suppose to be 3- separate files then how do I go about combining them to make it bootable?

I'd hate to choose the download option and not be able to make use of it, Only to have to pay FULL Price for an actual copy.

When I could just get my Free Copy for the price of Shipping and of coarse tax.

Any advice or Links I'd be most Grateful......

Answer:How do I burn iso after download using download Manager

It should be a single ISO file.
-

How to burn an ISO image to disc..

Its simple really, download this, save it somewhere.

When its done downloading, go to the location you saved it, and extract the .zip file.

After that, open the folder it created and run 'IsoBurner'

Click on this;
Attachment 29934

Then locate the .iso file and select it.

Then burn it, you should also set the speed to the lowest possible to ensure their are no problems burning.

Sorry if its not that clear, I'm half awake about to go to sleep.

I am brand new to these forums and I was just wondering how to check my internet Speed (mbps), download speed, and upload speed.

Is there a difference in all three?

Thanks alot for all of your help!

Answer:Checking Internet Speed/ Download Speed/ Upload Speed

You can get speed test, look on ur ISP site to see if they have one available or just search google and u should be able to find one. That will tell ur download speed. U can probably gets ones that test ur upload speed. Their should be a difference in all three, lol and btw i think its just two different types. Download speed is net speed(i think) and the other is upload speed. Download speed will be a lot faster in most cases. Dowloading is for dl things 2 ur comp etc and uploading is for uploading from u to other ppl.
Hope it helps

I recently upgraded my internet service and found that speed test results from speedtest.net and speakeasy.com were giving me download results that were ~ half of what I was supposed to be getting ( 9Mbs vs 16Mbs). I called the ISP and they suggested I restart in safe mode w/ networking and run the tests again. I did and the results of the test were surprising. I was getting the 16Mbs download speed that I signed up for. The tech suggested that I may be infected with something. I run several free programs (Mbam, avg, avast, ect.) to try to aviod these things, but it seems as though something may have gotten through. Hi guys. I hope you can help on this issue I've been having with my internet connection, I don't know what to do...

I resently formatted my harddrive because my internet all of a sudden started being very slow but after the format it's still the same issue. Now I've tried plugging the connection line into my laptop and there there's no problem.

I am gettin' a slower download than upload...

I have a 10mb download/1 upload speed LAN connection. I ran a speed test on the same connection and on my stationary it shows like 250 kbs download and like 750 kbs upload, while on my laptop it shows like 8 Mbs download and 750 kbs upload... so what's the problem?

So far I've found out that it has nothing to do with the internet connection line or my NIC (I tried a brand new one and it was the same issue), it's not spyware or malware, it's not fragmented and under internet connections it says that I'm connected on a 100 Mb network card and there are no problems with any of the devices?

However I can see that if I open the job list, the download connection is very unstable going from up to 750 kb for a breif moment then falls to a halt at 0 kb... and moreover it says that I'm not using any percent of the network?

I'm on windows 7 and haven't had any problems before this, the rest of the system works just fine, but not the internet. If I try and download something it won't get higher than like 50 kb and then may... Read more

Hi.

I have this very annoying problem and I'm really out of hopes. I don't know what to do anymore. I'll make a summary of the problem and will be as concise as possible

So I have this Dell Inspiron N5010 laptop with a broadband connection (direct cable, no router) and 3 weeks ago I reinstalled my Windows. Everything went well until 2 weeks ago when the internet speed went down, dial-up like. Pages won't load, and if they do they load just partially. I called my ISP and they said they had no problem. I couldn't find any solution so I thought maybe, some sort of virus or spyware is doing this so I formated the whole hard-disk and did a clean install of Windows.

Unfortunatelly nothing changed, the download speed is the same. Here is a speedtest.net evaluation:

http://www.speedtest.net/result/2276053238.png

Drivers are up to date, no windows firewall, no antivirus and no windows update. The ISP support guy told me to deactivate IPv4 and IPv6 from Local Area Connection, but nothing changed. I did a TCP/IP reset which raised my down speed to almost 1 Mb, but after a few minutes it went back to "dial-up". With the down speed being the same, Speedtest sometimes shows me upload speed in between 50-70 Mb which is unbelievable (I will make a ss next time I see this).

And the very weird thing is that I have another netbook (pretty weak config, Intel Atom CPU, 2 GB RAM) and with the same cable it has normal speed (the kind of speed I had on this Dell too). An... Read more

So, I'll boot up my laptop and everything will work fine. My download speeds will be somewhere near 20-25 mb/s and uploads are around 4-5 mb/s. I'll also ping test my computer with no packet loss, a ping around 20 and jitter around 1-3%. It all looks great and dandy (Pics below). Except, after about 15 to 20 minutes, my download speeds will dropoff to about 20-50 kb/s and my ping test goes through the roof to about 70-90 with jitter near 70%... Not good at all.

Now, I have the suspicion this is being caused by my internal wifi adapter (the Realtek), because when I use another external usb adapter (TP Link TL-WN722N) my speeds never fluctuate and I have no problem, ever.

Hi, welcome to this forum!

Please visit this site to measure the real speed of the connection. When done please post the results here.
Internet providers (who gives you the internet) usually make an offer of x speed internet but they only guarantee you to get much less. So the speed might change up and down sometimes. If the internet is still very slow please read the details of your agreement with the internet provider. But first give us the speed results from that site

Hi everyone,
At first I noticed a slow down with my ISP (Verizon FIOS) from 15mb/s to 6-7mb/s, but the upload speed is unaffected. So, I called my ISP they told me could be an issue with the Windows that I am using.
Then I called MS regarding the network issue, however they told me that my license has expired is not under warranty for technical support. Here I am asking for some help.

Some of the thing that the ISP done was conducting some test:
Buffer size:261360 bytes
Receive size: 66608 bytes
Their ISP network technician told me that the Receive size was too low and causing problem to the download speed, but the upload speed is still good.

So, anyone who have any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Answer:Download speed is limited, but upload speed is fine

are you using a router?
if yes, try bypassing the routing by plugging directly into the modem.

Recently my desktop has experienced very slow download speeds (~0.11 Mbps), however the upload speed appears to be in line (~2.0Mbps). These numbers are taken from Comcast's speed test (my ISP). It is obviously a problem with my PC because everything else on the network (PS3, Laptop) have great signals with no problems. I just recently reverted the Desktop back to its factory state, and everything was working fine for a couple of months.

The desktop in question uses Vista 32-bit and the Belkin Basic USB Wireless Adapter.

BUT...

The the download speed is absolutely amazing... Around 25kb/s on a 56k modem... is that even possible?? See picture is you dont believe it... (im still shocked...)

So there's nothing wrong with the isp but how do increase IE browser speed???

I regularly upload videos online and since the last few days they've been timing out or stalling. Blip.tv is telling me a 65 MB file is going to take 4 hours to upload. Yeah right. Other sites like that are about the same, or just time out and give me errors - such as Youtube. I recently got that "We're Sorry..." page on Google, so I'm thinking something is up and there may be something on my computer sending crap out.

Here's my speedtest.net results:

I've scanned the computer with ad-aware, spybot search and destroy, panda anti-virus, avg, malware bytes, super anti spyware - the works, and I'm not getting anything. Everything says the computer is clean. This just doesn't seem right to me however.

If it's any help - I used a different computer with the same modem and was able to upload fine.

I have encountered this issue long time ago

I created a homegroup network between my computers and the transfer speed between PCs is the same as my download speed (8MB/s).

My wireless router is Netgear Nighthawk x6 AC3200 and both PCs are connected via 5Ghz 450.0Mbps 802.11AC

Both PCs have SSD (850 Pro), use Core i7 Haswell and use Windows 10 x64 Pro.

Same thing happen if I connect both PCs via a wired Gigabit Ethernet connection, transfer speed between PC is limited by my ISP download speed.

In the past I tested this issue and I found out that if I disconnect my ISP, transfer speed between PC via wired Gigabit Ethernet becomes 15x faster (from 8MB/s to 125MB/s).

Answer:LAN(homegroup) transfer speed between PC limited by my ISP download speed?

Well that's the first time I've heard of something like this, though I'm sure someone else has come across it before seeing as how that's a pretty popular router. Maybe there's a bug which is applying the WAN speed throughput to the LAN connections via QoS? I'd try disabling QoS if it is enabled now just to see if that works.

EDIT: BTW, what is your upload speed with your ISP?

I have had a problem for some time with my internet connection. I get timeout messages from Google or other sites and from the email server regarding downloading emails. Speed tests (various tools used) are consistently showing download speeds just a third to a fifth of upload speeds (Yes I have got that the right way round) on an ADSL 'broadband' connection (i.e. copper wire all the way to the exchange). everything I have read says download is always (or should that be usually) faster than upload. So what is going on with my connection? The ISP has failed to do anything to sort this out so far. Help, please!

Answer:Upload speed much faster than download speed

what sort of downstream speeds are you getting?
You say your ISP has failed to sort this out - what have they said or done?
Which router are you using?
Is your computer connected to the router via an ethernet cable, or is it connecting via WiFi?

So, I've always kind of had this issue (not something really new). However, after testing my wife's PC to see if it were a router issue or something, I realized I'm in a bad spot. My speed test had my D/L at like .6 Mbps and my U/L at like 1.14. Both spiked during the test around 2.0. Comparing to my wife's PC when I did the test was 14.2Mbps D/L and 3.22 Mbps U/L. Her PC has the hard line into it, while mine is directly connected to the router. The provider goes through her PC, etc.

Is there some tests I could do to find out if it's 1.) My PC 2.) My Router or 3.) Just some settings.

Thank you.

Also, I saw someone ask on another one of these issues for the netstat -n, so here is mine.

hi! i just wanna ask between the difference of the download speed and the internet speed. because i have a 1.5mb connection i tried at speedtest and when i download i always get a 190-200kbps rate. so its not actually 1.5mb in my download speed even my internet speed is 1.5mbps. is there and calculator what should be my connection if i want my download speed like 1mb per second? thank you very much.

Answer:difference between the download speed and internet speed?

Are you sure you're not getting 190-200KBps? You have to watch because the speed is often stated using different bit rates. When you see 1.5Mbs (lower case b) then it is megabits per second. If you see 190KBs (upper case B) then it's talking kilobytes per second. There are 8 bits in a byte so you really need to multiply the KBs number by 8 to determine the megabits or divide the Mbs number by 8 to determine the megabyte number.

In your case 200KBs multiplied by 8 is 1600Kbs or 1.6Mbs.

I've been told before that download speed is independent of how fast your Internet connection is. Is that true?

Answer:Download Speed v. Internet Connection Speed

Short answer = no. But on the other hand yes. Depends on how you mean the question.

Internet connection speed is defined by download speed and upload speed.

Speedtest.net - The Global Broadband Speed Test

It's probably an issue of semantics, i.e. what they meant when they said "download". Your "download speed" is dependent on how fast your ISP's download speed, but also how fast the downloading server us uploading the data, be it a file or a web page, or whatever. You can't get something faster than someone is sending it to you, however you can get it slower.

Are you saying you only get 128KB/sec in your browser?

I already tried safe mode with networking so i assume it's not about viruses or my antivirus. Here's from a tcp/ip analyzer

TCP options string = 020405840103030101010402
MTU = 1452
MTU is not fully optimized for broadband. Consider increasing your MTU to 1500 for better throughput. If you are using a router, it could be limiting your MTU regardless of Registry settings.
MSS = 1412
MSS is not optimized for broadband. Consider increasing your MTU value.
Default TCP Receive Window (RWIN) = 65536
RWIN Scaling (RFC1323) = 1 bits (scale factor: 2^1=2)
Unscaled TCP Receive Window = 32768

RWIN is not fully optimized (even though it is a comparatively large number). The unscaled RWIN value is lower than it should be. Also, RWIN being close to and above 65535 does not justify the header overhead of enabling TCP 1323 Options. You might want to use one of the recommended RWIN values below.

For optimum performance, consider changing RWIN to a multiple of MSS.
Other RWIN values that might work well with your current MTU/MSS:
64952 (up to 2 Mbit lines, depending on latency. MSS * 46)
129904 (1-5 Mbit lines, depending on latency. MSS * 46 * 2)
259808 (2-14 Mbit lines, depending on latency. MSS * 46 * 2^2)
519616 (8-30 Mbit lines, depending on latency. MSS * 46 * 2^3)
1039232 (25-60 Mbit lines depending on latency. MSS * 46 * 2^4)
bandwidth * delay product (Note this is not a speed test):

Correct me if I am wrong, but connection speed and download speed are the same, the difference is how they are measured, and connection speed is theoretical while download speed is hypothetical.

1)Connection speed is usually measured in bits, while downloads are measured in bytes 8 bits = 1 byte (usually), and a kilobyte is 1024 bytes or rounded 1000 bytes. So a 56 kilobit dialup connection speed is only 7 kilobytes. 56 divied 8 equals 7. When I was on dialup, I connected at 28.8 kilobits per second, and I averaged about 3-4 kilobytes per download.

With my current cable broadband (new), I could theoreticaly connect at 10 million bits per second, which equals 1250 kilobyte download speed, I have come close to this speed on internet speed test, with the lowest being 800 kilobyte download on a test. With the old 5mbs connections speed, I would get half this speed.

In reality download speed is slower because of "overhead", speed is lost to other factors such as "hand-shaking". Cable slows down when there are lots of users online also.

If my information and math is correct, then I getting close to my actual connections speed with my wifi b connection, and down't need to upgrade to wireless G or N?????

BTW, how come cable and DSL are getting faster?

Hello everyone, I have a question about why my download speed is so much less than my connection speed. |I have cable, my connection speed is 11.0 Mbps. Whenever I download a file off the net I never can get the speed even close to just 1 Mbps. I get in the hundreds if I get lucky. Some of you may say that I have a lot of junk on my computer. But I just erased my computer and am in the process of installing what I want again. I've only used 30 gigs on my 200 gibs harddrive. I'm just curious as to why this is? Thanks everyone!

Answer:Internet speed vs download speed

connection speed is always mentioned in bits per second denoted by small 'b
download speed is denoted in bytes per second ,denoted by capital b 'B'
1 byte = 8 bits
if if your internet connection is 11mbps
then ur d/l speed would be 1.37mBps
please make a note ,there is difference between mbps AND mBps
hope u got ur answer

I bought a t mobile b'band usb stick 120 yesterday. Its ridiculously slow. Its supposed to be 3.6mbps download speed but what im actually getting is nowhere near even 0.5 mbps, often much less, and sometimes it even goes down to 0. Whats going on? How do i speed this thing up?

Answer:Hoe do i speed up my T- mobile download speed?

And you belived the adverts! If you are in a poor signal area then it will be slow, also any errors or noise will cause the error correction to wind the speed down. All you can do is to put the computer in the best possible place to get a signal.

Question: download speed?

what should the typical download for a 512kbp/s adsl line be? because all i can reach is 30 kbp/s which is like old 256 kbp/s connection. This is apparently an "update" from AOL!!!! but i'm not convinced.....anybody got/had update and works? please do say

Answer:download speed?

About 480 kb/s would be fair (60 KBytes/sec). It does sound like yours is running half speed.

Question: Download Speed

How can i speed up my download speed?

Answer:Download Speed

Get a faster router ... I use a 1Ghz PC with 512MB RAM running Linux. Next, you'll need to purchase from your ISP at least 5mb down. Keep in mind that some sites cannot deliver that fast.

I have a relatively new HP Desktop Computer.  I often get a "message" that certain programs/apps are available for download.  Some are accomplished within a very short time.  Some are impossibly long.................meaning never!  Approximately 24 hours ago, I selected one of the download "offerings."  This morning, I see that it is still "downloading."  Surely, 24 hours should be sufficient to download anything!   What's up?

Thanks for your input earlier. Got McAffee preloaded, so have not quite tackled the AVG issue yet.Just got said pc up and running, Sony Vaio VGC-JS1E/S, nice computer but one of my first problems is ....although I have got a fast wireless broadband connection, any downloads that I do take an absolute age. Is there a setting somewhere that I need to tell this pcwhat speed to connect at?

Answer:Download speed on new pc?

It will much depend first on your chosen ISP and the package you have subscribed to..Got McAfee preloaded, so have not quite tackled the AVG issue yet.If that suggests you have both installed on your PC you will need to get rid of one to avoid software conflict...Download speeds will differ depending on what you are downloading and from where...

Question: Download Speed?

hello there,

I am aware that lately my download speed has decreased about 1/2 of what it used to be...I have a 2MB/s connection from Tiscali and do not really know what should be the accurate download speed for downloading files. It used to come somewhere between 25-35kb/s, but lately all I get is 12 - 19kb/s. I have tried all these TCP Optimizers and so, but I do not really understand them so much, so do not know if I did not set anything wrongly. Is there anyone out there who could help me with this....????

Thanks, any help apreciated...

So my internet got really slow I went to www.speedtest.net to see if everything is alright these are my results http://www.speedtest.net/my-result/3195291341 they are similar to what is written on the paper that I got from my providers, but whenever I try to download something it downloads on 340-500 kb/s, sometimes it even doesn't work. In the past it used to download 5 mb/s and even more. Internet cables are alright. I'm using Windows 7 Home Premium x 64 bit. I'm using this internet for 3 years. Btw I read somewhere that my internet needs a reboot if it does need a reboot how do I do it?

Answer:download speed

Register at DSLReports and run their Line Quality Tests. It's best to run this test with a direct wired connection to eliminate any wireless issues from the results. It's useful many times to run this test several times, and we'd like to see each of the results. Post the results link from the top of the test display page for each test run here.

The link to post is near the top of the page and looks like:

If you wish to post this result to a forum, please copy/paste this URL
http://www.dslreports.com/linequality/nil/2357195 <- sample only, yours will obviously be different!
and your IP will be disguised.

Copy/paste that link here.

Note: You will have to enable PING (ICMP) request response either in your router (if you have one), or in your computer's firewall for direct modem connections. This is very important to get the most important part of the test to run.

Question: Download Speed

I have 0.5M broadband via a LAN with DLink router. I've got IE 5.5 on Windows ME.
Download (pages or files) speeds vary randomly from as low as 300 B/sec (!) to ~ 50kB/sec (the norm).
Often pages won't load and/or timeout. Occasionally the 'refresh' button seems the trigger a page to download immediately. The router is showing the LAN and DSL both connected.

Is this a known problem? Is it a PC, router or line problem?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Question: download speed

Win98se
Redhat Linux6.2
AMD K6-2 500
128 PC100 ram
13.6gig ide
SMC 1211 NIC
@Home Cable ISP

I downloaded the same file with netscape using win98se and using redhat linux 6.2, windows downloaded at 78KB/sec max and linux downloaded the same file at 196KB/sec max. Why would there be that much of a difference in download speed using the same NIC and network connection?

Answer:download speed

W98 has some settings in the registry that need to be tweaked to improved download speeds for the cable modem. I have the same @Home service and have modified my registry. It is much better after the changes. Here is the site I used as a guide. <a href=http://www.speedguide.net/Cable_modems/cable_registry.shtml> Speed Guide </a>

BTW, I found that at 1500 mtu, I had problems with surfing. I suggest you set the MaxMTU 1472 and the DftRcvWindow to 365160. Be sure to follow the instructions closely. In the MSTCP key you'll find three keys. Usually the first one is your DialingUpAdapter, two is the @Home adapter and three is the Virtual DUN. You want to Tweak the @home one. See <a href=http://www.speedguide.net/Cable_modems/cable_registry_advanced.shtml> finding the right ... </a>. Follow the instructions to rename the keys and then go to the Network display and verify that you are tweaking the right one.

If you have problems, they also have a <a href=http://www.speedguide.net/Cable_modems/cable_patches.shtml> patch </a>, Sguide_Tweak98.zip, that can be downloaded and run to add all of these Tweaks for you. After the patch I suggest you go in and change the MTU/DftRcvWindows settings to the ones I described.

Answer:download speed again...

The amount of RAM shouldn't have any bearing on your download speed. What service are you using to measure your speed with... Your results can vary dramatically from one test to another....

Question: Download speed

My cable provider claims up to 1gig down load speed. What would I need as far as hardware is concerned in my desktop, laptop or tablet to come close to that speed.? Wired & wireless.
Right now my 2year old laptop running I7 16 gigs ram and a G force video card doesn't in come close wired or wireless. Or do I need a 10/100/1000 ETHERNET card?
Thanks
Richard

Answer:Download speed

The 1gig quoted is for wired connection, not wireless. You'll never see those speeds over wireless. However for the wired connection, the router and Computers connected all need GigE ports and Cat6 Ethernet cables on order to achieve the best possible speeds.

Question: Download Speed

Why does my router show downstream rate of 1758Kbps but I never get a download rate faster than 250kbps when downloading through a browser etc on any computer. The adapter is Wireless-N on all Network nodes.
I'm thinking maybe the Megebyte and Megabit conspiracy. lol
Windows 7 with IE9 and Chrome on all comuters, No torenting and no active downloading known on any system.
{I would rather not talk to ISP Support about this as all I will get is someone connecting to my computer, doing an online speed test showing im getting 500MBPS or some other random made up number} :)
Thanks guys!
Andy

Answer:Download Speed

"router show downstream rate of 1758Kbps" that is your connection speed not your actual download speed.
Actual download speed is always lower and is also dependant upon the speed of the website sending the the download, some sites send at a lower rate than the speed of your connection and info has also to pass through quite a few servers before you get it so it is also ruled by each of the servers speeds.
Do a test on http://www.speedtest.net/ and tell us the results you get.

Question: Download speed

I tested my internet speed and got a download speed 593Mbps and upload 862Mbps, ping=2ms.

However, when I download files from some websites where the download speed looked like limited, such as 150kbps, couldnot be any faster.

Does anyone know why ?  Could I make it faster in such case ?

Thanks forum.

Answer:Download speed

A couple of things come to mind.  Sometimes the site you're going to gets overloaded and become slow.  Every time you go to a site, your connection can be routed through different sites, and sometimes one of these sites can be slow and/or having problems.  I just had it happen with Dell forums which are normally fast, and sometimes I see it happen here as well.

We're connected with 3Mbps DSL connection and I am wondering what would my actual download speed be?

If I'm going to download something at off-peak hours, in the early morning, should I be expecting 300KB - 375KB per second download? Or much lower?

Answer:Download Speed

You are getting what you are paying for. With DSL there is no peak times or usage since it is a dedicated non-shared line.

You can perform speed tests at various times of the day via http://www.speedtest.net

To secure a wireless network, check in the Networking forum.

For your download speeds, are you running a firewall, and has it been updated recently? I assume you are using a router... have you tried forwarding the ports?

If I use Utorrent on my desktop, the d/l speed is ok. If downloading from a web page, it is helluva slow. My laptop is not slow & does not have Utorrent installed.

Answer:Download Speed

It could just be that the source you are downloading from is just slower, or possibly replace your Ethernet cable...sounds simple but I had that once and it fixed it for me.

Question: Download speed ?

XP sp 3 FF 3When downloading files FF says: 57 KB/sec; however Task Mgr. says: .92 % 100 MbpsI don´t understand they both can´t be correct can they ??Thanks

Answer:Download speed ?

One is the connection speed from your pc to the net, the other is the file download speed and that is usually governed by the server speed. A slow server will give you a slower download speed and a fast server a faster download speed. Also contention rates and time of day fall into the equation too.
