Vista laptop Screen issue

Question: Vista laptop Screen issue

The screen on my laptop is moving to the right of the screen and I can't access the left side of the screen. When I drag it across to the left it flies back to the right. The desktop is fine, this only happens when I am in an application e.g. hotmail, facebook, etc. The cat walked across the keyboard so I'm not sure if some of the keys pressed have created this issue.

Preferred Solution: Vista laptop Screen issue

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hello Folks,

Trying to fix my friends laptop but running into a weird issue.

Using Windows Vista Home Premium
Graphics Card is Standard Intel 945

When booting windows normally I get a solid blue screen (not BSOD) after the login screen. Boots into safemode normally.

Clean for viruses/malware

Tried the following:

1) Plugged in an external monitor (VGA Port) and it brought up a display window on pc showing it was currently in multiple monitor mode (still blue screen in backround). Blue Screen on monitor as well. Switched to Single Display and now just blue screen on laptop display. Connected to TV with S-Video. Blue screen on TV as well.

2) Changed Resolution as well as 16 bit/32 bit color. No Effect.

3) Uninstalled/Reinstalled Graphics Driver. No Effect.

4) Tried creating guest account and logging in normally. Won't get past login screen. Just continuously loading.

Any suggestions?
Thank You in Advance for any ideas.

Ok, basically here is my problem.

My screen brightness won't go above 70 on the brightness bar slider.

The reason I know my screen can be brighter is because this JUST started happening recently. (well like three months, but I haven't had time to deal with it until now)

And anyway- heres 'symptoms'

The Windows Mobility doesn't allow the slider to go more than 70

Doing FN + F7 for screen brightness to increase using Toshiba hotkeys thing it doesn't go brighter. (it works but not more than 70)

Right as I am restarting right as it boots up it is much brighter then after like a minute it goes to the 70 brightness mark.

It hasn't always done this.

Is this purely hardware issue with Toshiba? Is this like preventing the screen from being 'too' bright?

How can I get it to 100? On restart right before it dims the screen is much much nicer / brighter... It would be nice to have it brighter all the time..

I could do a system re-install... but I'm right in the middle of my school year and I don't really have time at this time...

Thanks for ideas and help.

Alright, I've been researching this and I have not been able to come to any answers.... I was updating Nero to the latest version in Vista when it suddenly blue-screened... Dumped the memory to hard disk then rebooted... Now everytime Vista goes to load, a blue screen will flash up and then it reboots again. It won't even go to any of the safe modes.... Then when I insert the Vista DVD to go to "Repair computer" it won't fix anything....

I have a triple boot system which also runs XP and Ubuntu... This problem is only related with the Vista install....

Do you guys have any solutions on what to do? I don't see why Nero would cause the whole OS not to boot whatsoever.... Is there a way to erase the startup configuration completely as in deleting it or? Any solutions would be great... Thanks.

Answer:Vista Issue - Nero caused Blue Screen... Vista won't load now.

Have you tried to just repair the boot not the PC?

Hello, So I have a user that just recently started to have an issue.  The laptop is fine (beyond the sound issues with the X230 which aren't solved (sound issue)), but if the user puts the laptop in the docking station with the laptop lid/screen closed/down, the external monitor only displays the desktop background but no login screen or desktop icons. This user has Windows 7 Pro. on it, I just installed the latest video driver from Lenovo's site and that didn't help.  I made sure the screens were set to clone and not extended displays. When the user flips up the laptop screen/lid, both screens are cloned and all is fine.  Supposedly this just started to happen a few days ago. But if the user has the laptop turned off, puts it in the docking station, closes the lid and turns the laptop on, the external monitor works just fine. I've changed clone to extended desktop just to see if that would help any but it didn't.  Set her back to cloned displays. Only other thing I can think of doing is to make sure the external monitor's resolution is set right but...don't understand what's going on.... Thoughts?

Answer:x230 (2320) laptop issue with external monitor when laptop lid/screen is up

Hi, cftech
My first recommendation would be to make sure that the BIOS and chipset drivers are the latest version. Since the external monitor works, just only certain circumstances, this is most likely a software issue of some sort. The BIOS can be found here and the chipset here.
Also, if possible, could you have the user try to connect to the external monitor without the docking station? I'm just curious if the docking station could have something to do with the issue,
Best of luck, and let me know how it goes

Have Dell Latitude D400 Laptop which is several years old. For many months, had minor problem where LCD screen would have partial garbled horizontal lines, but when I shifted the screen angle -- moved screen on hinges -- back and forth slightly, then screen would be fine. But recently, the bottom 70% of the screen has turned to olive green mush with a few other vertical lines, where as the top 30% of the screen is fine. When I connect external monitor to rear jack, I am able to see all the graphics there and the hardware and software otherwise performing. When run built-in diagnostics, get graphics error with no external monitor, but all tests just fine when ext monitor connected. Conclusion from on line chat with Dell Tech was LCD Screen problem and referred me to the toll free SALES phone number -- meaning just purchase another one.

How do I know if the problem is the LCD screen being shot, or possibly just needing to clean or repair the connection through the hinges from the CPU/graphics card to the screen itself? If the latter, who should I seek to do such a repair or can I get guidance to open the unit and try myself as I am technically comfortable doing so with instruction? And given the cost of new laptops today, if I need to go outside for repairs, where should I look and up to what cost do you think is worth it, vs just abandon and purchase a new one.

Answer:Laptop LCD screen or screen connection issue

Could be a bad connection or the LCD might be shot. I would take it apart and at least poke around if it is no longer under warranty. Dell has some pretty good service manuals on their site. I think yours is here:

If you don't find anything obvious wrong with it, you can most likely get a screen off FleaBay for a few bucks and try it out.

Or just get some huge hinges and mod a 50" plasma screen on it...

Good luck!

I know this is a Vista forum but you folks are so well informed and nice that I want to take a little advantage of that if I may.

I recently purchased a refurbished IBM T42 lappy for the office, part of the reason why is because it comes with an integrated parallel port that I need for the software we use to sell our products.

Anyways, there was no CD with it as it appears an image made from Acronis comes with the lappy in case you need to do a clean reinstall of the XP OS.

Here's where I need help...:

The software we use runs on Windows 2000 Server so I would need to create a partition for me to be able to install the software but I would hate to destroy the XP OS already in it... is there an easy solution to this?

I know I did something similar when I did my dual XP + Vista boot but I doubt it will work with this since I had to use the Vista CD to make this happen.

Any takers? and if so... can you kinda take me by the hand with the blow by blow of how to do it?

Thanks folks.

Answer:Help with Laptop... Non Vista issue

How old is the laptop and do you know how much memory it has? Considering XP is already installed, it can be tough to get an instance of Windows 2000 Server installed as well, as a dual boot option. Usually you need to start with the older OS, so if you had Windows 2000 already, you can install XP as a dual boot option. The net is littered with people with issues trying to go the other way.

You might want to consider using VMWare instead, though this is essentially like having two computers in one, so you need to assign resources (memory, hard disk space) to the second computer which takes it away from your main laptop, unlike a dual boot option which just utilises whatever it can, based on your hardware specs.

If you really want dual boot, then I'd recommend having another partition on your hard drive to install Windows 2000 on, which probably also means you need to get yourself some third party partition software (like Partition Magic) as XP doesn't allow you to re-partition your drives without blowing everything away.

Depending on your current system specs (let me know if you need help finding out what these are) I'd seriously consider VMWare as an alternative. You should still have access to local ports. You shouldn't need to assign too many resources to get Windows 2000 Server up and running

Here's the link for VMWare if you're interested. I think this is the product you'll need (they have a Server option too, but don't think you'll need t... Read more

Question: Vista screen issue

I'm trying to assist a friend with a machine, Compaq Presario c500 notebook. The OS on it is Vista and when it boots up in normal mode the, the windows booting process starts up and then the screen goes black and remains so. If it is started in safe mode it boots as it should and all functions in safe mode can be accessed. Apparently they downloaded a key for Norton 2008 and attempted to install and that problem came about. I've tried to uninstall Norton in safe mode but apparently that can only be done in normal mode. Any ideas?

Need help here.

I have a HP laptop DV9543cl with 32bit Vista. Last Thursday (6/3/2010), Vista update icon showed up and asked me to install the update. As always, i did that. Once install was done, it asked for a reboot which i did. It started booting up again and when it finished Windows logo screen, it went blank and no display with all the other lights were in correct status. I waited for a long time before attempting a reboot. Since then i don't see anything on the screen after the initial BIOS screen (Which is also all jumbled up). I tried F8 (BIOS) and F11(Restore) but no screen. Don't know what to do but i am pretty sure that Laptop is working ok just not displaying anything. I am going to try Remote desktop on it now.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

First post, but I have tried to uninstall video drivers, system restore, random registry fixes, and so forth. I also did a virus scan, showing 17 Trojans (I know, very bad). I am guessing that is how this happened, not sure though. Uninstalling the video drivers helps, until I need to restart it due to new software. Then I can sometimes get to the log in screen, but even after that, It just goes black after a few seconds. I have searched and searched all over, and have not found a fix. Any help?

So I have a brand new Dell Inspiron 9400 that I got with Vista Ultimate on it. I picked up a 4GB Giga Bank USB Flash drive. I plug it into the Vista laptop and it finds it but wants to install some drivers. So I check with IO Magic and they state they haven't tried it with Vista, and have no drivers for Vista.

A week later I just got a copy of CA Anti-Virus on a 2GB USB flash drive. Plug in the 2GB Flash drive and I need to install drivers also. No drivers can be found and I can't find anything on CA's site or Ultra's site about Vista Drivers.

Both drives work fine under XP. My other USB Memory Sticks work fine under Vista. So is this an issue with my Vista install and I should reload Vista on the brand new laptop? Or is it a driver issue and I should just wait?

Thanks for the ideas and help.

Answer:Is this a Vista Driver issue or my laptop

You shouldn't have to install drivers for it to work.

It's one of two things. Either Vista is trying to install ReadyBoost.

The other possibility is that the drives are U3 capable meaning:
U3 is responsible for the development of a proprietary application design specification created for Microsoft Windows operating systems so that applications can be executed directly from a specially formatted USB flash drive.) which they are trying to install. Applications are allowed to write files or registry information to the host computer, but this information must be removed when the flash drive is ejected.Click to expand...

Click here for more U3 information

I did a quick search for you on U3 + Vista and found some information on

Does U3 support Vista? Windows 98? Mac?

I'm not sure if the above link will help you any, I've never used a U3 device before, but hopefully this will lead you in the right direction.

Hi everyone,

I'm new to the forums and hope someone can help me out with this problem. I am trying to connect my new Dell XPS M1530 to my HDTV via S-Video. However, since I do not have a cable with both S-Video ends I am using a composite video cable ---> S-video converter cable between the tv and laptop. This setup works perfectly with my older Inspiron 6000, which runs on XP, however i can not get it to work with the M1530 which runs Vista Home Premium 32bit. I have made sure that all my settings on the laptop are correct and from the Windows Mobility Center it even says an HDTV Display has been detected but my laptop does not show up on the TV. I just get a blue screen on the TV that says "No Signal or Weak Signal". I have made sure that the clone option under my Nvidia Control Panel is selected and the entire setup works perfectly on XP. I feel like I am missing something with Vista but can't seem to figure it out. If anyone can help that'd be great. Thank you!

I've got an Acer Aspire 3694WLMi laptop with 1.86 Ghz processor, 80 Gb HDD and 512 Mb RAM. It runs Windows Vista Basic, or at least tries to... I only do a bit of eBaying and use Word 2007, not a lot else, but it's horribly slow. I keep seeing black screens and "not responding" messages. I'm assuming this is due to the small amount of RAM, what does anyone else think? How easy is it to upgrade RAM in a laptop? Could I do it myself or where should I go? It was supplied by Laptops Direct by the way. Thanks for any help and advice.

I have a number of apps that won't fill the screen when run in 'full-screen' mode on my Vista laptop. They fill the screen on my XP laptop so I'm assuming it's a Vista issue (no response from publishers' help, yet) but it could be hardware or driver. But other apps run fine-and none of the apps for which I've found Vista updates (or specific claims of Vista compatibility) have this problem-so it sounds like an issue with Vista. (There is a slight difference in screen resolutions-the XP laptop runs at 1280x768, the Vista at 1280x800. could this be the issue? But the apps are more short horizontally than verictally-and the horizontal resolution is the same.)

Hi all,
I have an unusual problem running games specifically on my windows vista machine, which has arisen in the last month or so. Basically whenever I run games, the program never seems to run in full screen mode as games generally do. I do not know how this happened but I think I may have accidentally enabled it through a keyboard shortvut. Beyond that, I am not sure.

This problem only seems to effect specifically games programs which I find unusual. The game itself seems to dictate how much of the screen is black or not (The attached screenshots should explain this better than I do). Other programs such as web browsers, media players, word processors, etc seem to run fine, as does the OS when not running games.

I am wondering if anyone has a solution for this problem. I would appreciate any responses. I have found out that the problem is not the Alt + Enter shortcut based on forum feedback and testing.

I'm sorry for the quality of images, as if I tried to screenshot, it only took an image of the area that isn't black. I had to use a camera.

Hi. I've had this laptop, a Dell Inspirion 1200, for a few weeks now. I usually either close the cover or put it into Hibernation when I'm done using it. I haven't jarred it, shocked it, or stepped on it.

Basically, I opened up the cover and hit power. While it was booting up, I looked away to do something, and when I looked back, the screen was covered in white vertical lines. I shut down the computer by holding down the power button, then rebooted. When it came up again, it was perfectly fine (no lines at all.)

Is this a fluke or something I should worry about in the future?

I've had a HP dv6 laptop for close to a year now and have had zero issues up until the last week. I've noticed when watching videos in fullscreen for even a short period of time the contrast for the screen goes right up up when the video is exited, basically if I watch something and then minimise it whatever is behind it is almost unreadable, such as the standard chrome bar up top looks almost one solid, bright colour, after 5 to 10 seconds its back to how it should look.
It's also a LED display
Anybody have a similar situation or know what the problem could be?

For the past few days sometimes when I open my laptop I get a grey screen with horizontal streaks (sometimes black with horizontal streaks) running across the screen. If I close the screen and re-open it eventually it will go back to normal. I've also had the screen freeze a few times for a few seconds while I'm using it.

I've hooked it up to my TV when it had the grey screen and it was working fine so I'm pretty sure it's the laptop screen. This doesn't happen all the time so if the solution is get a new screen I'll just live with it, but perhaps something simpler?

Answer:Laptop screen issue

My first guess would be the video card or driver but if you hook it to an external monitor and it is OK then it does point to the Laptop screen. Sometimes the ribbon cable from the Motherboard to the monitor can get loose or damaged. Not saying that is what it is tho.

when i unplug my ac adapter from the wall before i unplug it from my lappy the screen stays bright, which isnt bad. but when i plug it in(wall first then lappy) it goes dim, like its in power saving mode. now how i usually fix this is i recreate the problem by unplugging it from the wall then turning the comp off, then unplug it from the comp while plugging it back into the wall, turn the comp on then plugging it back in. but it usually takes me a couple tries to get it back to normal again. ive turned off my power saving features and ive just had the computer screen replaced about 2 weeks ago. its always done this and i know it happens when i unplug it from the wall first; which if im in a hurry i dont think about it untill its to late.

its not that big of a problem but i would love to know how to fix it faster or maybe disable any features that could cause this.

About 2 weeks ago, a pink line appeared on my laptop screen. It is a straight line running down the length of the screen on the left side. A couple of days ago another line appeared, this time yellow. I am fairly certain that this is a hardware issue (driver re-install and system rebuild have not helped). I contacted HP who told me my 15month old laptop is out of warranty and will cost 250 to repair.Do I have any other options?ThanksTony Webber

Answer:HP Laptop screen issue

Not really it is a hardware issue rather than software I suspect. You could try ebay to get yourself a new screen cheaper and install it yourself. Usually screens are about 50 - 150 depending on the one you need. However some home insurance may cover you for the costs but remember the rise in the premium before you do claim.

sir, some dead pixal see on my laptop screenso please tell me a simple solution of my problemthank you.

Answer:issue about my laptop screen

There is no way to fix it the issue is whether it is serious enough to require that HP replace the screen. There is a "pixel policy" that governs the terms of the warranty. You need to contact HP Warranty Support to see if you can get a new screen.

It shows as limted access in the network sharing centre ? Network discovory is showing as custom ? is this correct. The property I am in is quite small and as i said with the Acers I have never had any issues.the laptop is running McAfee if this is of any help.

I have a Toshiba Tecra M4 laptop which I performed a clean install of Vista Business ~ 6 months ago. I have the docking station with it, which I use to connect my HP LaserJet 1100, external USB hard drive, mouse, keyboard, etc to.

Now I have had no issues with this setup until recently. Whenever I try to undock, I am getting this error:

"You cannot eject your computer because one of the devices in the docking station, 'ECP Printer Port (LPT1)', cannot be stopped because a program is still accessing it."

Now once I get that error I usually just stop the external drive and pop it out anyway, but once I redock the laptop, I cannot print until I reboot in the dock, at which point it begins printing the spooled print job at login.

I tried uninstalling/reinstalling the printer, but I get this error now even with the printer uninstalled and disconnected entirely! I see nothing in the process list that would seem stuck accessing the port either...

Answer:Vista laptop undocking issue - LPT port always in use?

I've seen this happen a lot with printers and docking stations. If I am thinking of the same printer, isn't it USB compatible? If so, switch it over and disable the parallel port.

I have a 3 month old Toshiba Satellite L350 laptop with a touchpad issue, operating system is Vista, basically it freezes after using the touchpad slider control, i.e., if you move your finger up and down on the right hand side of the pad several times the arrow freezes.

However, you can still use the keyboard functions like Ctr/Alt/Del and navigate around windows.

Connecting a USB mouse seems to work fine with no problems and after several minutes the touchpad seems to spring into life but soon freezes!

Ive tried uninstalling, updating the Synaptic driver but helps for a while but still freezes?

I think the only way to resolve this is either start a system recovery or take it back to the shop unless someone can kindly help?

Cheers, Brian.

So i've got an XP desktop with two printers (HP, Epson) connected by USB and a laptop with Vista Home Premium. Now I scoured the forums with a few different search terms and I found some things that were somewhat related but not quite the same so please bear with me.

The laptop is wireless and we want to print from it. Its on the network, its online, it sees the shared printers on the network and it can freely move files from the xp machine to the laptop and back. When we try to connect to the printer, or add the printer - no dice. No response from the printers, and it usually tosses a 0x800f0214 error back at me (from the laptop). Both printers work great from the desktop - something is just getting fouled up when it tries to send data to the printer. I'm losing my mind. Perhaps someone else has run into this before and can lend some advice.

Answer:Issue: printer sharing from xp to vista laptop

This is just one of a few websites I read through briefly.

I have an old Compaq Presario F700 laptop which I use solely to run emulators on. It runs Windows Vista, and I've never had much of a problem with it, besides a relatively slow startup. It is clean of viruses, at least according to my last scan of AVG and Malwarebytes.

The battery died while I had been using a Project 64 emulator the other day, and his been stuck in a super tiny screen resolution ever since.

Now normally, I'd find that particularly easy to fix--but this time, everything -else- didn't shrink with it. I can right click my desktop, go to display settings, and I can't get to my monitor resolution adjustment bar because I can't pan the window far enough onto screen.

I had the bright idea of plugging a second monitor into the VGA port in the side of my computer, and managed to change my resolution then, but as soon as I disconnected the second monitor, it reverted to it's tiny state again. I'm not quite sure what to do for this problem, and my google searches aren't turning up much about it.
I will also be at school for a majority of today, I'm taking my Finals for the year. I will check in and respond when I can.

Answer:Screen Resolution Issue : Windows Vista

I can't get to my monitor resolution adjustment bar because I can't pan the window far enough onto screen.Click to expand...

This might work for you to be able to move the window up far enough to see the monitor adjustment bar.
1. Press alt+spacebar
2. Press M and a 4 sided-arrow appears
3. Use the up arrow key to move the window up (all movement of the window is done with the arrow keys)
4. Once the window is at a position so you can see the adjustment bar, press the enter key to hold it in this position. You can then use the keyboard and mouse as you normally do to work on the screen adjustment.

Ok, I'll try and get to the point, this is a long issue and I am quite simply fresh out of ideas. I have had no problems booting vista to date before experiencing this. I'm normally pretty aware of having the newest updates for my laptop, whether that be updated hardware drivers or windows updates.

Yesterday, whilst searching the internet, I downloaded the trial version of Alcohol 120%, a cd burning software. I got it from the offical site. As I ran the install, and 'OK'ed all the UAC warnings the computer stalled and promptly crashed. I had time to notice a windows update icon running in the startup bar, but was not sure at the time if that was related...

The computer reset with the error recovery screen, and I chose the 'Start Windows Normally' option. The computer went through to the startup screen, I typed in my password, it loads up my desktop to the point where there is a single icon in the taskbar and then promptly throws up a jittering blue screen. The computer restarts again. No matter what I try, it blue screens on this point and restarts.

Now despite a pretty dim view I have of Vista, one thing I heard it excelled in was data recovery options. Yet none of these help me. I have already done the following to end up witht he same result:
1. Running in Safe Mode (w/ Networking and w/ Command Prompt)
2. Running from the recovery console and the Vista DVD the Startup Repair package
3. Running the Dell Boot Diagnostic suite for my laptop.... Read more

Does anyone have any experience of an Advent Laptop working fine, but
when you shut Windows Vista down, shortly after the screen goes blank,
the screen switches back on to a bright white?

The laptop is not on, but the screen is.... obviously this drains the battery.

Apparently some wine was spilt towards the QWERTY side of the keyboard

I was using my laptop yesterday afternoon, when the screen began to fail. I turned the laptop off because it had froze, and when I tried to turn it back on, it just continuously reboots and shuts off, and the screen will not come on.

I have tried plugging in an external screen, but it does not receive a signal from the laptop, nor will the external keyboard I have to use (laptop keyboard is broken, not important).

Is there any way I can get the laptop to work again without taking it to a repair shop, or does a certain part need to be replaced?

Answer:Laptop won't start after screen issue

It could be one of several issues and from the sounds of it, would require a part replacement. Possibly the video card, but my best guess would be motherboard failure. I really wouldn't be able to tell for sure without further testing.

Peering at the screen, you can tell it's displaying. Sadly, it's only bright enough to see for a brief moment.

I'm running into the D-Sub on the TV and have the CRT/LCD setting to display on both the laptop monitor and the TV. TV is a clear picture and the laptop I'm guessing from reading I've been doing is lacking the backlight.

History: No updates have been done in the timeframe that the monitor issues surfaced. No drivers changed, no programs installed (except vaguely possibly ExamDiff and one or two portable apps (

A week or two ago, I noticed the screen seemed to be shadowed in one area but the shadow seemed to go away if you brightened the screen all the way. Also, the screen seemed to be flickering, like lightbulbs sometimes do before blowing, that really quick, irritating flickering. This didn't usually last long, maybe 30 seconds at the most and it would settle down, ditto the shadowing.

Now, if I switch between CRT/LCD options or press then release the little screen switch near the hinge (the one that turns off the monitor if you close the lid), I tend to get a very quick proper display on the laptop monitor before it goes dark again with the displayed information impossible to read.

The issue is the same through a hibernate and resume, brief flashes of a clear screen and then only the vague outline can be seen.

I would call Toshiba about it. If it's only 3 months old it should be under warranty. If you've uninstalled the touch pad software and it still happens, it might be the touch pad itself acting up.

Hey! I'm trying to install Win7 on my laptop (Gateway MT6841) I did the installation full through, 32bit all good. Once I booted it the gateway recovery partition came up saying I needed to load some hard disk drivers. However I can't find anything that looks like hard disk drivers for this laptop. I actually couldn't find any 7 drivers. I've experienced that vista drivers will work though. I just need to know where to get drivers for this! All I could on the gateway support site was network, modem, video sound, media reader and touchpad drivers.

Thanks for the help.

You don't need any drivers at all. The Gateway recovery partition is popping up because it does not recognize the Windows 7 OS.

Get rid of the recovery partition - wipe the entire hard drive with Killdisk, then re-install Windows 7.

I've recently upgraded from Windows Vista 23bit to Windows 7 64bit, but I've already hit a few snags. I tried watching a show on Hulu on my tv via an HDMI cord, but the resolution between the two was an issue. The screen on my laptop appeared normal but the screen on the tv was very small, taking up only half the screen size. I tried adjusting the resolution on my laptop to see if any of them would fit better, but none of them worked. It would also produce a pop-up that said the compatible resolution is 1280x768 but even that one was too small.

The tv itself is an "iSymphony LC26iH56 26-Inch 720p LCD HDTV.

The problem with all of this is that being able to do this was the whole reason I bought the tv. I do not have cable, which is why I use Hulu, and to come across this problem now is more than a little frustrating. It worked fine when I had Vista, a little annoying sure since it would sometimes drop the picture or audio, but it worked well after some tweaking....

Any help is MUCH appreciated!!

Try pressing F8 repeatedly during bootup before the Windows logo to get Advanced boot options.

Try Last Know Good Configuration first. If that doesn't load go back and try Safe Mode. If Safe Mode works then go to Computer and right-click the C: drive and select Properties. Then the Tools tab and Error Checking. Tick both boxes and then Check Now button. It will schedule for next reboot. Reboot and let chkdsk run. See if it goes any further.

This is the second time I've bought a new laptop in 2 weeks, because my old Dell's hard drive crashed.  The first replacement HP wouldn't connect to Wifi and Geek Squad couldn't help from the store, so just traded out for this new one, and that problem is solved.  I'm not sure if my Win 10 is 32 bit or 64 bit, BTW, and don't know if it matters for this issue.  I was on my laptop last night and the keyboard kept acting wonky--slow response and I'd have to hit a key a few times to get the letter/number to type at times.  Also, even though I hit the numlock key, it wouldn't stay locked.  Please tell me this is a quick driver reset.  I really don't want to go back to Best Buy again.

Hello, so I have this problem with my laptop screen, My laptop is a Dell XPS 15 and not even a month old. While I was reading an article online, I thought I heard a ding sound like what it makes when it asks me for administrative permission for a program to open or do certain functions and then the right upper corner and part of the right side of my screen dimmed. As if there is a shadow over it. When my laptop asks for administrative permission it generally does dim everything but the dialogue box that opens up but never have I ever seen it dim only a section of the screen and a window never opened asking me for permission for anything.

I tried resetting my computer and it changed nothing, I also tried changing my screen's brightness and the dimmed section does get brighter with the rest of my screen but it still stays a few shades darker than the rest of the screen. I do have a warranty that would cover any repairs and fixing that needs to be done but I am hoping it is something that can be easily fixed by myself because sending it in to be looked at, repaired and then returned could take a while and I obviously don't want to waste the time if somebody knows an easy fix to this. I bought this laptop back in September-ish of 2014. It runs perfectly fine still and always has but the image on my screen has been a problem since probably December of 2014. I know that seems ridiculous for me to just now be bringing it up but I honestly dont use it that often and only for pleasure so I always put it off and forgot about it.

The screen basically flickers blue in certain spots. Corners of windows, icons, links, etc. Its almost as if it was highlighted... I am not sure what it is. Sometimes it randomly goes away but then comes back within a few days.

If i do a screen grab of the blue flickering it doesnt appear in the jpg. So i took a picture with my cell phone. I uploaded that pic as well as my system specs to this thread.

Anyone please help lol....Bestbuy within 10 minutes told me it would cost me $200 for a new screen without even doing anything besides comestically looking at the screen and laptop. HP has been beyond awful in their "support"

I seem to have broken my laptop. I was trying to hook it up to a tv with an HDMI cable. Following the advice on a website I went to "Adjust screen resolution" to try and find the tv as another device and enable that. However there was no other device, so I decided to play around a bit to see if I could get something to , this was my mistake. On one of the drop down menus under the resolution menu I managed to select something which created a second device in the box showing how many displays you have. I was pretty sure it wasn't the tv but thought I'd keep playing around and on one of the other drop down menus I selected something like "expand across both displays"...said soemthing like that, and then that's when the laptop went blank, still a backlight coming from it but nothing but black on screen. I restarted the laptop, the screen showed up the windows starting stuff then the desktop flickered on for barely a second then it went back to blank screen. I can only guess I've created an imaginary device with obviously no display and this is what it is showing now when it's blank.
Hope this makes sense to someone else, not sure it does to me, I really shouldn't mess about with technology.

Hey all, I'm having a dilemma.

TLDR: my new Acer Aspire E 15 laptop has a messed up screen, should I get a refund and either finance a MacBook or find a used MacBook, or try to repair the Acer?

In mid march I bought a new laptop - an Acer Aspire E 15 from Amazon. A couple weeks ago I opened it and there was a big black spot on the screen with white lines coming from it. The laptop hadn't been dropped or even moved, I don't know what caused it. But reviews on amazon said other people had the same problem a month or two after buying the laptop.

I contacted amazon and they said I can return it for a refund. I contacted the seller and they said I could send it to them for repair. However, I use my laptop for work and couldn't go that long without it for them to fix it. When I contacted Acer about the warranty, they said that since the black spot is "finger shaped" (??) it's not covered under warranty. But it is so large that it's a real problem when trying to work, or even just generally use it.

So now I have to decide whether to get it repaired or get a refund and buy a new laptop. I'm leaning toward the latter. I really want a MacBook and was approved for financing from Apple.
However, my friend made the point that computers are kind of like cars in that they depreciate in value after you buy them. So is it really worth getting a new MacBook and financing it? Or should I look into getting a used one for cheaper? If I get a us... Read more

Just as the title states, my new bought laptop is extremely weird. I am currently having 2 issues, and yes I've searched already(even though its hard to search when this is so confusing)
1. Whenever sound is played on the laptop, WITH and WITHOUT HEADPHONES/MIC plugged in, the left side laptop speaker lets out a static sound for a while, and if a sound on the laptop ends, it ends after like 3-5 seconds.
2. The buggiest issue I am having, is my computer refusing to be the "actual" screen. What I mean by this is that if I screen capture my desktop, the lower maybe 1/6th of the bottom and the right side is cut off, the resolution being weird.
I.E If i stream, and capture a window, and my mouse is in the middle ON MY SCREEN, the stream will show my mouse cursor to the right and a bit below of where it should be in the middle.

Please help me, as I've already tried my laptop brand's customer service GIGABYTE, and Reddit, but to no avail, and GIGABYTE takes forever for them to respond to tickets, and all they ask for is if i installed anything, etc when I got the laptop, when the issue was from the beginning.

What I have tried:
Disable/Enabling NVIDIA/INTEL HD graphics cards
System Reformat
Updating drivers
Change resolution

Thank you for your time, and I pray that someone has a solution for me... this is extremely annoying

Answer:Hard to explain issue with Laptop and screen

Hi there

If you have tried a system format the chances are almost 100% hardware related.
You will have to take it back to the seller for inspection.

The will either repair the laptop or credit you.

The retailer wants a screen shot by email before they will even issue an RMA No and agree to accept the laptop. I took a screenie with HypersnapDX but the green line doesn't show up.

They suggested a cell phone with bluetooth / usb - but the laptop doesn't have bluetooth and the cell doesn't come with a compatible cable.

Do I have any options here - software wise to enable me to grab a pic of the green line ?

i just got a new laptop with a 17 inch screen, if i pull up a web site with allot of typed wording (not graphics) i can sometimes see faint green or red almost like a shadow of some of the wording. but if i go to a solid screen it is not there.. so i am almost sure its not dead pixels. anyone else ever experience this?

ok heres the story.

my cousin gave me his acer laptop to "fix". basically it had been running unbearably slow which it turned out was down to loads of spyware. i got some programs and got rid of the spyware, but there was one that didnt go away.

after doing research, it turns out it was "netproject". i located it but instead of deleting it i googled to see how to get rid of it properly. this involved going into safe mode.

however, i thought i'd call it a night. anyway, i went tot urn the computer on before and right at the login/welcome screen for windows xp, i get the following blue screen:

so basically i cant even get into windows now.

Answer:bit of a blue screen =\ [moved from Vista; probable malware issue

Hello, I have a T520 with a docking station.  There is an external monitor connected to the VGA port in the docking station and I have the laptop set to only use the external monitor.  However, when I close the screen of the laptop and put the laptop to sleep, and then when I open the laptop again, the laptop monitor turns on and mirrors on the external.  So basically, I need to set it to only use the external every time the laptop starts up.   Is there any fix to keep the laptop screen off while it is docked? Thanks.

Answer:T520 External Monitor/Laptop Screen issue

I don't have a dock to test. But I would look at the setting for Action when closing the lid/cover. Hibernate, go to sleep would be the normal actioins. You'd want nothing to happen. Look into the choice and I believe that will resolve it. There may be a group for when DOCKED as notebooks had years ago. The settings would apply only to when Dockend and not undocked.

I have a Dell Inspiron 17RSE laptop (the SE = special edition of the 17R (7720)). Lightning stroke the router which was connected to my laptop through an Ethernet cable. The laptop was off during the strike, but afterwards the router was fried and the laptop screen did not power on (or so I thought) when the laptop was powered on. I then connected an external monitor to the VGA out, and this works. The graphics card also seems to be picked up correctly inside speccy/HWMonitor/Everest and CUDA acceleration works inside Adobe Premiere Pro, so I guess I can rule out a fried GPU. The monitor Part Number is N173HGE L-11 rev.2 (ChiMei) --- and in Everest it says Manufacturer: HDKPV173HGE --- As I said initially I thought the screen was completely blank, but upon shining a light on the screen I can see an image on the screen, just very faint (btw the display brightness is set to max). I then looked for the LCD power inverter, but realised the screen is a LED screen so there is no inverter. So I'm thinking it could be a burned out fuse near the LCD connector cable on the motherboard itself, or the LED backlight is burned out.
What do you think?
Other changes in my laptop state since the lightning strike:

1) the laptop seems to overheat when running Adobe Premiere Pro -- which is set to use GPU acceleration. Using HWMonitor it seems to be the CPU, not the GPU, that overheats and all 8 threads of the CPU... Read more

Answer:Laptop LED screen only very faintly lit. LED backlight problem or other issue?

A fuse would make sense. Seems like you know what you're doing, so take the thing apart locate said fuse and put a multimeter across it, see the resistance.

The LCD screen on my laptop began to develop- a series of horizontal lines and over the course of two weeks it went from 3 or 4 lines to a total blurred white out making the screen completely unviewable.
I bought a replacement screen assembly and installed it and it appeared to work just fine. However once the remaining battery charge depleted, the laptop would not turn on and did not seem to charge. I tried the unplug, battery reset, hold power button combo but could not get the computer to power up.
I reinstalled the non-functioning screen and now the computer will power up - but I cannot see anything on the screen.
I wondered if it was something to do with the comp not recognising that the replacement screen was open. Has anybody got any advice or similar experience of this.
I'm cracking up a bit here as I thought it was solved but now it's not

Answer:Samsun Laptop screen replacement power issue

Assuming you tried powering up with the battery removed and that didnt work, did you remove the battery when you replaced the screen?
It seems likely that you have damaged the power circuitry on the motherboard.
Your theory about the laptop not recognising that the screen is open is reasonable but the wrong way around as it must have noticed that the screen was open as it continued to run until the battery went flat. Its usually the proximity of the screen to the laptop body that trips a reed relay that turns the laptop off.
Its possible that the reason why it powers up with the old dead screen is because being dead its not consuming any power but when you connect the new screen it refuses to power up because the power drain is too much for the damaged power circuitry.
Of course all of the above is supposition and the problem may be due to something entirely different.

The screen is not all black, instead, pixels are washed out, leaving a halo in a few spots on the laptop screen, when the computer was initially started from the box. The first one was shipped and I assumed it may have been handled poorly and now the similiar with the second one. I will follow up with a call to HP, I wanted to know if the community has any screen quality issues?

I've owned my HP laptop for almost three years now, and up to this point it has worked great throughout it's use. Recently, it seems like the hinges to open and close my screen have been putting some stress on the screen frame. Every time I open my laptop up, I have to take about 5 minutes to open it carefully so the frame doesn't come loose on the bottom left corner. Closing it is an issue too, as I usually have to close my fingers on it to keep the frame from going loose, resulting in it coming loose despite my hardest efforts, in which case I have no choice but to close it and snap everything back into it's rightful place. I took my laptop over to Best Buy for their input, and the only thing they suggested was superguling the frame to the screen. I took their advice and tried it, letting it sit for 2 days open while it set. (You can never be too careful!) The superglue did nothing and my frame is still loose, and I now have an ugly line of superglue on the bottom of my screen that sets off my OCD every time I need to get work done. If anyone has any idea on how to go about fixing this situation, I'd appreciate it.Thanks!

Hi allI?ve been experiencing problems with my Sony Vaio Laptop off and on for about 3 months (the laptop is 18 months old).Basically the screen goes blank for no reason when I?m on the internet, listening to music, working. The backlight is still on (I can adjust the brightness of the screen using shortcuts) and the laptop still runs (music still plays etc) but I can?t see the screen.I have found by hitting the space bar repeatedly can sometimes make the screen come back to life, but not always but I don?t know why this is happening.I contacted Sony and they said ?From what you describe it would appear that there could be an issue with a connection with the display. It may be necessary to arrange the collection for repair of the VAIO... To confirm if this is a hardware fault with the VAIO we would recommend that a full system recovery is carried out on the VAIO.? which basically means it goes back to factory settings, which is something I want to avoid as I haven?t backed up any songs, work, photos (I?m buying an external hard drive this week).Has anyone else come across this issue / has any insight how to overcome it?? I?d be grateful for any advice. I?m not very technical so go slow with me!Thanks in advance.

Answer:SONY Vaio Laptop Blank Screen Issue

from what Sony are saying it sounds like this may be a known build fault or loose wire problem. If this is the case returning the laptop to them would seem to be your only option. It always pays to back-up your work regularly, it's a good habit to get in to. You never know what might be waiting around the corner!?

I picked up a Dell Inspiron 5000e laptop second-hand (Windows ME installed) and I'm trying to get it to work. There are two issues: screen and touchpad. I'm just focusing on the screen for now since I can plug in an external mouse. Here are the symptoms (I think they may all be related):

When I turn the laptop on, the LCD screen will not light up. If I press Fn + F8 to toggle CRT/LCD, the LCD screen will flicker briefly. If I hold a flashlight to the screen, I can still see a very dim image but the backlight refuses to stay on. However, if I plug in an external VGA monitor, then press Fn+F8 several times, the LCD screen will stay on. I can even unplug the ext. monitor and the LCD screen backlight will continue to stay on. I just need to plug in the ext. monitor at some point after power-up to get the backlight to stay on. Or, if I plug in the ext. monitor before power-up, the LCD screen backlight will come on and stay on from the start.
I have to try 3 times before I am successful to boot into Windows ME. The first time, I get Windows ME loading image for about 15 seconds then the screen goes dark (not off -- just black), then the hard drive stops accessing and nothing happens. I restart either with Ctrl+Alt+Del or by holding down power button, then I am given the option to boot into safe mode. I select "Normal" boot (not Safe Mode). The same thing happens a second time. The third time, I successfully boot into Windows. (Other times I booted into Safe Mod... Read more

Had this Sager np2740 laptop and it has had lot of issues. When i first got it, it was great. Battery was good and everything. After having the laptop for a bit, my battery went bad. Had that Red X mark on it. I bought a new battery replacement which was expensive. Had to go to repair shop to install battery on laptop because you had to open laptop in order to put battery in.

After that, battery went bad and had that Red X mark ever since. Then recently my laptop flickers a lot the screen. Like rainbow color. Now theres a black line there. But if i move screen up or down, it goes green or yellow etc. The thing though is i connect my laptop to an external monitor so i dont have this issue with my main screen. Thus it would be impossible to use my laptop by itself because of the blurry lines.

Since I'm out of warranty... this is with xoticpc, what can i do about this case? Go to a repair shop and see what they can do about it? The thing is if i need a replacement part, wouldn't i need to order from sager/xoticpc for this issue? I have had nothing but issues with this laptop once the battery first ran out.

Answer:Laptop Flickering Screen And Huge Issue with Clicking

I also had another issue related to this. Earlier when i was trying to click on things on my laptop screen... it kept asking me if i want to delete this program from computer. Example i would left click on a program on my desktop or click on my pictures or documents.
I click no and then i had this message show up over and over again where I cannot X it out. Had to been like that message popping up over and over again. I assume this is related to the screen flickering? Example i would use my mouse and click on programs on my desktop or my documents etc left clicking it like normal. It would then have the popup are you sure you want to delete file and send to recycle bin. Basically i click no but that same message keep popping up over and over again. When i got control alt delete, you see it has like 50 processes that say program isn't responding or something like that. Only way to get rid of this is to restart my laptop or shutdown then start it up again.
And when i do restart laptop or close it and start up, it would have this message with black screen and have option to click Enter where it says Window 7. Like asking which program to start up. Does anyone know what this is?

Hello there, its the Celestial Crown Prince of Canada here.I've been a loyal user of HP Consumer-Level Laptops for 2 years. It seems that there is a screen display issue with my Laptop. For myself, this is the first time an issue of this kind has occurred. For some reason, during my current(well, now its my last) session, my screen went totally blank on me and turned black, as if the laptop was in an off sort of power state, however, the laptop power was still on and before the issue suddenly decided to happen in front of my very eyes, I had been using the laptop, and was even working on doing some coding...some of you may know me as the creator of the Celestial Crown System.ini Configuration File.Apparently, this is a known HP Laptop Issue, and I'm not sure if HP is actively focusing on fixing the issue so that it does not become an inconvenience to other HP Laptop users or buyers. Is there any known solution as to how to fix this sort of issue? This is very critical, and I was in the midst of trying to save the rest of my code in notepad to my desktop, but I would surmise that asides from the 2 files I was able to save, the rest would be gone unless I would be able to resume my last session which I highly doubt at this point. If anyone could please let me know as soon as possible, I would immensely appreciate it. ~CCPOC Benson Lam

My friends computer was experiencing issues related to viruses/malware so I started running several different scans to try and remove the virus. She previously did not have any anti-virus programs so the first thing I did was install AVG2013. I then ran a scan and removed some minor threats. I then downloaded malwarebytes and ran a full system scan.

About 10 minutes into the malwarebytes scan the system crashed and the blue error screen popped up. It was the same one as the one shown here:

Now whenever I start up the computer the blue screen appears and the computer crashes before I can even get to the log on screen. I still have access to the safe mode though so I have been trying to fix things by running a few other scans such as Spybot Search and Destroy and ccleanerbut nothing is working.

I have since removed Spybot, ccleaner, and malwarebytes but still have AVG. I attempted a system restore but it failed.

Could someone please help me!

I have a HP Pavillion laptop model dv9292eu. The graphics card is a Nvidia Geforce Go 7600 and I am having issues with it. It appears the drivers have been corrupted. I cannot boot into normal mode. I keep getting vertical green lines in the background.

When i get to the login screen the famous blue screen appears which states the following:

Stop 0X000016
Attempt to reset the device driver and recovery failed. Collecting crash dump.....100%

Then the computer restarts.

I then logged into Safe mode and the following message appeared:

Program Signature:

locale ID = 2057

I did some searching and i found 116 code is related to the graphics chip. I was advised to go to HP site and download the graphics drivers. I downloaded the first version of the graphics card driver for my laptop and executed the file in safe mode.

I restarted the laptop and the greenlines were gone and i actually got to the login screen!woo! but then when i logged in, the screen went blank for 10 mins and nothing appeared. I hit the power button to restart and the problem came back. Sorry for profanity but ***?

Sorry, I can't help fix your issue, but I wanted to let you know that you are not alone!  We have 7 Elitebook 840 G3's wth Windows 10 on the 2013 UltraSlim Dock as well, and they are all doing the same thing.  Both external displays will go black for a few seconds periodically throughout the day.   We are using HP EliteDisplay E242 displays for all except one user, who has ASUS displays, and they all have the same issue, so the display itself does not appear to be the issue. The VGA port seems to work fine, so this points to the Display Ports/driver being the issue.  I have tried all available driver updates, but nothing has resolved the issue. We are looking for a solution to this issue as well.

Please fix this issue since we bought a huge number of these laptops and we are ready to return them if this issue is not fixed.

Hi all. Is there any brilliance in the house? I hope so.

The inverter on my Acer Aspire 5103WLMi died after 13 months.

No probs. I bought a new one, put the machine together again and started it up. Perfect... well almost.

What is happening now is that I cannot get maximum brilliance from the screen. All the Windows option settings are set to the max and the are no other user settings available I can make to chance this.

Ok you'll be thinking there is an issue with the inverter but I'm far from sure that it is. The picture is perfect apart from this issue.

Booting up Vista will have the screen bright and brilliant (max brill). Windows will continue to load and then as the machine continues to load the registry and gets to the bit where the screen brilliance is set the screen will dip and settle to about 75-80% of it's capable brilliance. I feel sure this is a registry issue because of the boot up procedure which is clockwork and 100% predictable.

Where can I inspect the reg to find these settings? They must be there.

Other suggestions?

Many thanks.

Answer:Brilliance issue after screen inverter replacement on Acer Laptop

Are there really no takers on this?? How dissapointing.

For those that don't know what an inverter is. inverters create a hi voltage charge and light the screen bulb(s) on your laptop or monitor. When it don't work you will see a perfect but dark n unlit image on your screen.

I've ran some programs in compatibility mode and it seems to have fixed most of my blue screen issues, but I still get the blue screen of death maybe once every two days; I'm new here so I'm not really sure where to begin. Ive had the Acer 3003 wlmi for 4 years now (running XP) - ive always had issues with a flickering screen which is the first issue. Second one started about 2 years ago - the laptop began overheating. Sometimes it gets so extreme that Im unable to touch the mousepad or have the machine on my lap. If any intensive application is run (ie, malware scans, dvd, youtube stream etc), the machine overheats powers off.

Last week, this happened and so I switched on the machine as per usual again - I was taken to screen where it recommends safe mode (3 different options), a normal mode, or a last known settings mode - if I click on any of these options, the machine powers off, then loads up again - its just a cycle now and I can't get past it.

Ive been able to access the BIOS screen, and have also taken out the cooling fan to clean.

I have mechanical failure warranty and they are scheduled to pick the machine up for evaluation in the next day or so - they have warned me that if it turns out to be a software issue or virus, then I will be liable for charges. Obviously I dont want it to come to that - what is the likelihood of this being the case? I dont have the system restore disc anymore so am unable to run that.

Or is it a hardware failure taking all things into consideration?

Suggestions/advice are greatly appreciated!

I have a friends Asus x54h laptop that is not booting, and it is droving me crazy.

What is happening:
When the power button is pressed the fan turns on and some indicator lights turn on including the hard drive indicator light. Then the disc drive makes a noise and the hard drive indicator light turns off. Here is a picture of the indicator lights:

Nothing ever shows up on the screen.
Sometimes after running 1-5 minutes the laptop will just completely turn off.

What I have tried:
-Booting with just the power cord connected.

-Booting with just the battery connected.

-Taking out the battery and unplugging the power cord and holding the power button for 40 seconds, then plug in and try to boot again.

-Attaching a screen and pushing the keyboard buttons to add an additional screen. Nothing showed up on it.

-Taking it's hard drive and putting it in a good laptop. It booted into Windows and ran without issues.

-Replacing the current stick of ram with a new one from This laptop only has one RAM slot and I don't have any compatible RAM so I had to just buy one. I put it in, and nothing happened differently.
