A good Antivirus program

Question: A good Antivirus program

Hello, I'm looking for a good anti virus program that i can open and lets me scan certain files that are downloaded, instead of scanning the whole computer or having it run in the background all the time.. One that scans for trojans horses, worms, malware etc. Let me know..Thanks..

Preferred Solution: A good Antivirus program

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: A good Antivirus program

Use the AV you have installed, right click on the download & select your AV.I also have Malwarebytes installed & select that as well.I use Microsoft Security Essentialshttp://www.softpedia.com/get/Antivi...http://www.softpedia.com/progScreen...http://lifehacker.com/5401453/stop-...http://lifehacker.com/5433229/micro...http://www.microsoft.com/security_e...Malwarebytes' Anti-Malwarehttp://www.softpedia.com/get/Antivi...http://www.softpedia.com/progScreen...http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam.phphttp://www.spywareinfoforum.com/ind...Forumhttp://www.malwarebytes.org/forums/

I am currently using Windows Vista Ultimate 64 bit edition and I am trying to find a good antivirus program to use. I am currently using Avast! Antivirus but it can't run boot scans on here. I don't want to use Norton because I have had way too many bad experiences with it to use it again.

Does anyone have any good suggestions for a program whether it is free or paid? I prefer free but I am willing to pay for it if absolutely necessary.

Answer:Looking for a good antivirus program for vista

Hi. . .

On most systems here (both x64 and x86), I use ESET NOD32 anti-virus along with Windows Defender and the Windows Firewall. This link will take you to the 30-day free trial screen. ESET NOD32 uses the least system resources of any that I have tested anyway.

On 2 others, I am running the newest free version of AVG v8 with Windows Defender & Firewall.

I recommend the use of one anti-virus only. No Internet Security Suites or 3rd party firewalls. I have seen too much damage caused by them. The Windows Firewall is as good as any and has a light system footprint, but generally it is an in-coming firewall only. It does not do much for outgoing. Personally, I don't care what crash data and system performance data goes back to Microsoft and my system's manufacturer as that is where fixes originate. I never "got" the blocking of this type of outgoing data - as if there is something in your system phoning home w/ personal information... then either the in-coming firewall did not do its job or the user bypassed it - making the point of having a firewall moot as continued blockage of outgoing will not solve this.

Good Luck to you. . .

Hello,A couple of months ago I asked for a free, good, anti virus program.  Avast was the program suggested.I downloaded it, but now see that it is only temporarily free.  Is there a truly free anti virus program that is very good at what it does?

Answer:Free, good antivirus program

I would suggest AVG 9.0 free. They have both a free edition with only a few missing features and a full version. It works great and their virus database is updated almost daily. Here is a link to the site.  http://free.avg.com/us-en/download?prd=afg

I used Panda to do a free scan. It came back showing 2 viruses and some adware. It says for 12.95 I can buy 6 months of service and disinfect my system.should I do this?? I mean is this a good program or should I buy something else?? I was using Norton but it seems to slow everything down. thanks!Amanda

Answer:Is Panda Antivirus a good program??

It's a good program, but another resource hog...just like Norton. There are plenty of free prgrams out there that accomplish the same thing without ANY out-of-pocket expense...AVG for eample.

I have AVG, and for as long as I have had it, it has always been trusted and has always helped me detect and remove harmful software that other programs couldn't. Anyway, I know that it is a bad idea to have numerous or more than one antivirus program because they can actually cause more harm than good. But while downloading an Internet Boosting/Optimizing program, a program called SystemGuards was also included and installed upon notifying me. Anyway, after running through the program a little, I have noticed it is really useful as it offers some backups and cleanings that AVG does not. However, the problem is that it does NOT detect viruses or Trojans...only simple Spyware and Adware, and even when it does detect it, I cannot remove it since it is only a free basic version.

So I was thinking, am I able to have AVG running all the time on my PC and just make sure this other program never runs while AVG is on? I have disabled SG from running on Startup so AVG will be my primary protection program, however I think it will be a good idea to keep SG because of its handy file shredding, temp cleaning and backup options.

Good idea or not? Should I uninstall the other program?

Answer:Is it a good idea to have a second antivirus program?

as SG is not an antivirus app, it focuses on Adware and Spyware - you should not have any problem with running these at the same time

Answer:Recommend a good free antivirus program

You ask a question we get quite often. With that in mind our very own quietman7 has written up a very good overview and provided valuable information. There is no one size fits all choice when it comes to antivirus or malware protection tools and resources. Please take a look here: Choosing an Anti-Virus ProgramThe entire topic has good information and should be read as well.

Hi All, I am new here but I was wondeing if anyone has seen the GuardBytes virus? It hijacked my laptop and wouldn't let me open any browser, run any antivirus software, or even boot in safe mode while asking me to register.. I Goolgled it but I got no hits. I was finally able to run the Super antispyware program which found some adware and eventually let me reboot in safe mode and run malwarebytes and a couple other programs to clean it out. So I am now looking for a good realtime antivirus program to keep this from happening again. Thanks

Answer:New Virus...looking for a good realtime antivirus program

You ask a common question for which you will receive varying opinions and recommendations. There is no universal "one size fits all" solution that works for everyone and there is no single best anti-virus. Every vendor's virus lab and program scanning engine is different. Each has has its own strengths and weaknesses and they often use a mix of technologies to detect and remove malware. In many cases choosing an anti-virus is a matter of personal preference and what works best on a particular system. You may need to experiment and find the one most suitable for your needs. Please read:Choosing an Anti-Virus ProgramHowever, an anti-virus program alone does not provide comprehensive protection and cannot prevent, detect and remove all threats at any given time. Anti-virus software is inherently reactive...meaning it usually finds malware after a computer has been infected. The security community is in a constant state of change as new infections appear and it takes time for them to be reported, samples collected, analyzed, and tested by anti-virus researchers before they can add a new threat to database definitions. Further, if you're dealing with zero-day malware it's unlikely the anti-virus is going to detect anything.Antivirus Isn't Dead, It Just Can't Keep UpHow useful is antivirus software?Symantec Says “Antivirus Software Is Dead”Is anti-virus software obsolete?Anti-virus software is just not enough anymoreWhy Antivirus Is Not EnoughAntivirus is a good start. ... We have a 4 pc Home Lan system. All 4 pcs are WinXP with SP2. Two pcs run NIS 2004 and two run NIS 2005. I am having a lot of trouble configuring set up for the Lan with Norton. I also don't seem to be able to run a firewall with the Lan. Can someone PLEASE recommend a GOOD Internet Security/Antivirus program that is user-friendly and compatible for Lan use? I have done some checking on Kaspersky and I've been finding that they are not really very supportive of English speaking customers, preferring to just offer a refund than fix a problem. Anyone got any ideas?

It is free for home use. It is so good that even if you haven't scanned your computer for a while it will find the virus anyway. It just keeps sending you a message "virus data base has been updated". And then when it has found the virus, it will ask you if you want to delete it completely or put it in the recyling bin. I think that we will all want to delete it completely.

We use to trust Norton Antivirus to knock out all our virus problems. For three years we didn't have a single formidable attack. Norton knocked out everything.

In the last two months, we were hit twice with viruses that caught Norton completely off guard. The situation got so bad that we installed two hard hitters to fix the problems.

Between Super Antispyware and F-Secure we were able to get our computers back up and running with no problems.

Are the attacks getting worse or is Norton just not as good of a heavy weight as it use to be?

Sorry not sure what you mean by your question.
As Windows Phone's are currently a low risk not antivirus software is needed.
If you wish you can get a Family Safety browser but not virus protection.

I used to be an AVG person, but AVG 8 is a total resource hog, and it annoys me. Im looking for a program (Free or Not, Doesnt Matter, Bitorrents are on my side : )) that isnt a resource hog, yet offers good antivirus protection, and spyware protection would be a plus, but spybot S&D works fine too.

Answer:Good Antivirus Yet Not Resource

comodo has a great range of all of those products. I have their anti-virus but don't use it much. Check out their firewall though, one of the best, free, and no-resource-hog firewalls i have ever used.

The updates that Webroot has made to their 2011 Antivirus has pushed Webroot Antivirus into the running. They are now a major player as far as antivirus technology is concerned.

Here are the key features that make them a worthy competitor.

It comes with Spy Sweeper and an anti-spyware that detects and removes even the most complicated and buried spyware known today.
It has real-time protection that will safeguard you by blocking and removing viruses before they have a chance to do any damage.
It's easy to use; featuring automated protection with scheduled scans, and automatic upgrades giving you constant, and regular protection that is always up to date.
They've taken their Antivirus, and made it easier to use, and more attractive. With faster downloads, and faster scanning, Webroot has joined forces with the creators of the well respected anti-virus, Sophos. They've integrated both anti-spyware, and AntiVirus protection into the software to give users complete protection. A highly recognized and renowned anti-spyware meets an award winning AntiVirus, it's no wonder Webroot's AntiVirus with SpySweeper is the most preferred of its category by students, professionals and businesses alike.

Answer:Webroot Antivirus Could be good

I've never used a product from the "webroot"
I do not believe in all the software from now on.
I will use the software, if it is really good, and has been getting good feedback from users.

Can anyone please let me know if this antivirus is good compared to Avira,Avast?I'm only interested in the free products.I am using it right now,but since Comodo is not part of any AV tests, how can anyone compare it to others?I used Unthreat without problems, but people say it's not a good av,so i installed Comodo.Thinking of trying Avira again.Didn't like Avast(slows browsing down a little).Any input about Comodo Antivirus will be appreciated.

Answer:Comodo Antivirus-How good is it really?

I realize that you're asking about Comodo Anti-Virus; however, I am too unfamiliar with it to make any sort of opinion of it. After reading the rest of your paragraph, you seem to be possibly looking for other Anti-Virus programs besides Avast and Avira, no? If so, have you considered trying BitDefender Anti-Virus free or Panda Anti-Virus free?Just to make you aware, someone else, who is a bleeping expert (e.g. quietman, animal or another BC staff member,) will most likely post a response to your question about Comodo Anti-Virus in this thread today.

Not sure if this relevant but I have recently seen some problems with Panda Internet Security on brand new kit. 2 possible solutions.1 - Try stopping the XP wireless util and using the software provided with the net 2 plug h/ware.2 - Find and rename "netflt.sys" this will stop the Panda unknown threats service (this is Panda's solution).Solution 1 worked with Fujitsu Siemens PC's but not with Acers. Solution 2 (only tried with the Acers) worked for a few reboots but then failed.nb The wireless hardware was D-link.

Hello everyone. I have been doing some reading and just want to ask some opinions from more informed people.

I am currently using CA Security Center on a Windows Vista machine. I have the Anti-Virus, Anti-Spyware, and Anti-Spam loaded. I left off the firewall because the gentleman at Circuit City said it conflicted with the Vista firewall.

Come next month my service will expire and I will be in the market for a new anti-virus program. I am looking for something that has real time monitoring for spyware and malware. I was infected with a malware for a long time that CA never picked up on with the anti-spyware or virus programs, and i thoguht it was supposed to be there. MSserver somethign or other. I had to DL Malwarebyte's anti-malware to remove it. I found that here BTW. I am currently using firefox as my web browser and it has protected me a little bit, but some things still got through.

Is there any programs that will scan the webpages for viruses and spyware in real time? I know CA anti-virus scanned stuff I DLed but don't know about real time spyware scanning. Like adware-pro used to do.

So before I go renewing with CA and just being diligent about removing things as they come in on occasion. I am wondering if you guys could recommend a good package that works well with Vista. If it is a free one that is fine as long as its good and is not full of advertisements. I DLed a free one about a year ago that was just full of advertisements.

Would it be good to have an add... Read more

Answer:Need Help Choosing A Good Antivirus

Hello JB_orchidguy This is a loaded question, but a very good one.First, let me tell you what I use.Firewall - Zonealarm Pro for VistaAntivirus - Antivir Personal Edition Classic (Freeware)Anti-spyware - CounterSpy (actually, I've just installed this as my Spy Sweeper is coming close to renewal, but I want to try others before making a decision on which product)These work well on my system. I have 2GB of RAM w 2.8GHz with Intel Dual Core Processor on Dell Dimension 5150 running on Vista Home Premium Service Pack 1.You can see that I prefer standalone programs rather than using suites. IMO, the problem with all-in-one suites is that they may be strong in one area, like antivirus, but only average in other areas of the suite. I have yet to find an all-in-one product that is strong in all areas. But this is my personal opinion.ANTI-VIRUSThe best ones (in no particular order):- Avira Antivir (Premium - shareware or Classic - freeware) http://www.avira.com and http://www.free-av.com **Note that the free version does not include email protection but if you save any attachments to your hard drive and then scan them, it will alert you if infected**- Eset's NOD32 (continually ranked very good by many) http://www.eset.com- Bitdefender Antivirus http://www.bitdefender.comSources: http://www.av-test.org http://www.av-comparatives.org http://www.virusbtn.comFIREWALLThe best ones:- Zonealarm (get the Pro version as it comes with an extra layer of protection). I have Panda Titanium 2004 on my system (Win98) which is due for annual renewal. Try as I might, i cant renew online because they say i dont exist and no matter who i send emails to they always get rejected. You cant speak to them on the phone apart from a premium line number which will probably end up more costly than rebuying again. As its not exactly a technical matter I begrudge paying 1/min for a problem that is their making. As thier customer service is non existent the only option is to change my software so does any one know a good solid a/v they can recommend which does not hog the system, looks after itself, updates easily, doesnt have complicated setting, instals on Win 98 easily and wont take over my machine.

A particular anti-virus that works well for one person may not work as well for another. You may need to experiment and find the one most suitable for your use. There is no universal "one size fits all" solution that works for everyone. Another factor to consider is whether you want to use a paid for product or free alternative. My personal choice is NOD32 Anti-Virus if choosing a paid for program or avast! Free Antivirus if choosing a free one.

Hi, I know this sounds like a idiotic question but i currently use AVG, SuperAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes free versions and i was wondering just how effective the paid-up versions really are? Please can i have your opinions? Many thanks!

Answer:'Pro' versions of AntiVirus-really that good?

It depends on the program in question, most of the freebies are slightly cut down versions of the Pro variant. You'd need to look at the websites to see exactly what the differences are and then decide if you want to pay the extra. In the cases of AVG and avast! the differences are fairly minimal, but the Pro version of SuperAntispyware has the real time cover that's absent in the free version so there may be some advantage there. The core scanning engines on the free and Pro versions are usually the same, so unless you're a commercial user who's not eligible for the free license the coverage offered by the freebie is more than adequate.

Can you please help me to buy a VERY GOOD antivirus im willing to purchase one because i badly needed it... and can you tell me why is that good over the others.. Thanks.

Answer:Can you please recommend a VERY GOOD Antivirus..

Hi,

ESET Smart Security wins hands down. It's much lighter on system resources in general and catches potential threats before they can get loose on your system. I have tried all of the others on various PCs (from modern to older models) and it is just the fastest IMHO. Others just make the machine too slow for a lot of people.

the firewall is excellent in the latest version (v4) and antispam is great too.

lastly, it's highly configurable unlike others. If you're just after antivirus, then ESET NOD (which is built into ESET Smart Security) is the best in many respects.

I just reformatted my hard drive and I have two questions general questions for my Windows XP machine,

Is there any 'good' free antivirus software out there that can keep my system fairly clean (something that runs in the background and keeps itself up to date)?
What is the best anti virus solution over all (paid or free)?

Before this I was using Norton Antivirus, but I get the impression that it's not really all that great. Before I re-formated I followed a link to an online antivirus scanner and it found what it said was 4 infections and many suspected files. I'm looking for something that will automatically check all incoming and out going files - including e-mail.

I know that NO antivirus is perfect, but what would guys recommend?

Thank you in advance for your advice.

On a more serious note, look into Etrust EZ Antivirus.

Free alternatives that are decent would be Avast or AVG. However, note Avast recently gave my XP a BSOD, so I lean more towards AVG.

As far as I know, the main difference is that KAV does not have Application Control, but Kaspersky Internet Security does.
Does this make a big difference in protection?
I am asking because I want to combo Kaspersky with an app that has a HIPS component, so I need to use KAV rather than KIS.

Answer:how good is Kaspersky AntiVirus, as compared to KIS?

Application control and Trusted Applications Mode are a great additional layer of protection. Which app do you want to add to Kaspersky? IMO KIS would be the best. TAM is really great.
