keyboard not typing right keys

Question: keyboard not typing right keys

Hello all i have been having a problem off and on with my keyboard on my asus laptop, sometimes when i press the L key i get a/ instead and when i press the o key i get yt instead of O, I don't really know what is wrong with or making it do that, it is annoying. Sometimes when I hold the shift key for a few seconds and turn on the filter keys and then turn them right back off it goes away but comes back later, has anyone else had this problem, or know what i should do to fix it? Any help would be appreciated. I am running windows 7 on the laptop and purchased it new in feb 10

Preferred Solution: keyboard not typing right keys

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: keyboard not typing right keys

"purchased it new in feb 10"It should still be under warranty...sounds like you have a hardware problem and I would contact them immediately and request service on the laptop. Just make sure to save all your important docs and files before sending it away.Chances are they may reformat your drive and lose all, or they will replace the keyboard and still set it back to a factory installation.Too many people send their laptops off and lose all their valuable files not knowing ahead of time.Good LuckSome HELP in posting on Computing.net plus free progs and instructions Cheers

When I use the spacebar / appears. When I press return # appears, when I use the back delete button a [ appears. How can I restore the usual setting?I have done a system restore, switched the laptop on and off. It has not restored the usual keyboard. I have tried all the function keys. Please could someone help me with a solution to restore the keyboard's usual settings. Thanks

Answer:Keyboard typing different keys from what it normally does

This just started suddenly? No spilling of any liquid or other "abuse" of the computer? It sounds to me like the keyboard gets the wrong signals - not even enabling num lock or anything of the kind should result in such behavior - the space bar, return and back key are all pretty much the same on all keyboard-types - unless you've installed some sort of key-remapper (which is highly unlikely, given you've done a system restore) - which makes me wonder - have you run a keyboard test from the BIOS/startup diagnostic? Most likely it's a shot keyboard, given that no abuse has taken place - run the diagnostic test on the keyboard, and see what turns up.

I was randomly playing a game, then all of a sudden my keyboard started typing weirdly. Eg. when i type a, e appears and when i type e, L appears. I went on control panel and the keyboard was still set to "English (United States) - US" and the language was still set to English. I tried pressing Ctrl + Shift and that didn't help either, no matter how many times i pressed it. Can someone help please?

I have a Equium L-20, just bought it and every so often it is missing characters while typing, these are random, it isn?t as if certain keys are sticking can go through and type the alphabet and every 2 or 3 times it will miss letters or characters out as if I hadn?t pressed the keys, also the space bar can miss now and again.

Would this be a keyboard fault or software, it?s kind of got me puzzled and almost to point of returning it for a replacement.
During this short post it missed 4 letters out, had to check it and fill in the blanks

Answer:Equium L-20: Keyboard random keys not typing

Hi

Well, I have read some topics about the similar issues in this forum and I think it?s not a keyboard drive problem. In my opinion it?s something wrong with the keyboard hardware or with the cable connection.
I think the best way is to contact the ASP for the detailed informations. If the warranty is valid, all replacements will be done for free.

My laptop keeps typing numbers as opposed to letters on certain keys.

I have run my antivirus programme and it is clear ? I am running Windows XP.

Any ideas as to what to do? I have checked the languages and all seems ok there. I have run my spyware and privacy guardian. All reports clear.

Basically, I am now stuck as to what else to try........

Hope someone can help.

Answer:Keyboard typing numers, not letters on certain keys

Hi,

Many laptop keyboards have a section which can be used for numeric data entry only.

These keys are normally just a block of the main QWERTY keyboard and accessed by using a Function key.

You have probably got the keyboard into this "mode"

Hello, I went through the process of cleaning my mouse while the monitor was off and I'm fairly sure I clicked something maybe I shouldn't have but after that the whole keyboard was messed up..

E shows up as ]
D shows up as ''

Esc, start, [ , n, y, I, F1-F12 keys don't register, among a few others..

Things I've tried so I don't waste anyones time.. [Windows 7]
Changed Location, Keyboard Layout (English - US) is the only language
Ctrl - Shift x1/2, Alt - Shift x1/2, and pretty much any other variant I could think of.
Plugged another keyboard in, same thing.
Plugged keyboard in another computer, works like a charm.
Restarted, plugged and unplugged. Uninstalled and tried to update driver..

Nothing worked so far, hopefully you can can make something happen.
Thanks in advance.

I have a thinkpad edge 15 and I have had it for several years now and sometimes if I press on  "e" ,"3" "the volume buttons" I get a different resposne on my screen. For example,I would type "e" then I might get a "p" or it may effect the volume.I need to find a way to resolve this issue. This laptop has had water spilled on it and has been dropped, but has been in a laptop case and I think that might be the issue, but I would appricate it if you guys can give me tips on how to resolve this issue. Thanks!!

Hi, Im not sure if you have solved the issue you are having, but this happened because the connection on the end of the ribbon which connects the keyboard to the motherboard corrodes. We had about 20 laptops with this issue and solved them all by cleaning the end of the ribbon with a rubber. Hope this helps! Tom

Hi,

Apologies for what is probably a stupid question.
I have a Tecra A2 and run XP proffesional.
Suddenly some of the keys are typing symbols different to those indicated on the keys.
Pleeeeze tell me how to reset the keyboard to default.

With thanks, Danny.

Answer:Keyboard keys of Tecra A2 typing wrong symbols?

Hi mate,

it could be that you have a wrong keyboard map. A keyboard map is like a draft for your hardware which identfies which char is displayed when you hit a key on your keyboard.
Keyboard maps a depending which language you use so if the symbols on the screen do not match the input of your typing then it could be that a wrong keyboard map is set.

In such case you will have to set another keyboard language.

To change the keyboard map you must do the following:
Click Start -> Settings -> Control Panel -> Regional and Language options -> Click on the Tab "Languages" -> Details -> Choose your input language which matches your keyboard

Good luck and nice weekend

Dear all, I recently purchansed Lenovo Z500. It has been great but I have had some key board problems. When I browse the Internet or doing some work on Word, the keyboard doesn't let me type. Instead the buttons do other functions, like minimizing or maximizing the current window when I need to type something. It seems like everytime I restart the Windows, it solves the problem. Is there any other way to fix it, or is there a special button I don't know? Or is there a complete list of key functions? I know the function key combination listed in the link below pg29. But they don't help me solve the problem.http://download.lenovo.com/consumer/mobiles_pub/ideapad_z500p500_hmm_1st_edition_sep_2012_english.pd...  Please advice, Baha

Hi there, and thanks in advance for any assistance you can offer! This problem is really frustrating because I have important things I need to do asap and I am prevented from doing them.

EDIT: It seems the problem is exclusive to Firefox... I never use IE so I didn`t think to check until now, but yup, it`s just Firefox.

The problem is my keyboard. I was just posting in a discussion forum and going to hit the square bracket again to quote someone. But I think I hit something at the same time as pressing that key, as I was going for the A key but instead I hit around the shift key. So I think I hit the square bracket key plus the shift key or something around there, at once. Or perhaps a combination of three keys.. or perhaps this has nothing to do with the problem at all.. or for all I know I have a virus (although I have been scanning a lot lately and all seems clean). And now here is the problem:

left square bracket gives me nothing if I press it once, and if I press it twice: ^^
right square bracket gives me nothing if I press it once, and if I press it twice:
quotation mark: ` (ex: I don`t.. notice this is not the same as a usual quotation mark)
shift + two gives me " instead of the AT for e-mails
interrogation mark:
exclamation mark: oh, apparently this still works! lol

Hello Bleeping Computer people!

Computer with the problem is a desktop. HP Pavilion Model number a4327c-b. Windows 7.

My problem: Keyboard keys unexpectedly stop tying text and instead, pressing a key, activates a function.

For example typing the F key opens the File menu. Tested with a second keyboard and had the same problem.  Problem started unexpectedly, without warning. Problem occurs when surfing the web and playing free online games at MSN and other popular sites.

Mouse works. Norton Security Suite working.

Temporary fix: Opened the On Screen Keyboard and pinned it to Task Bar. Opening and minimizing the On Screen Keyboard fixes the problem for a few minutes but then the problem reoccurs. Problem seems to reoccur when surfing the web and playing free online games at MSN and other popular sites.

Descriptions: Of how the problem effects these programs:

Outlook: Can’t open New Message. When forwarding an email can’t address it or type text. Keyboard keys act as if they are function keys. For example typing F opens the File Menu. Other keys open other Outlook functions/menus.

Word 2007: Can’t type in a Document. Type F key and Office Button opens.  Other keys activate other Word functions.

Internet Explorer: In all Search boxes, can’t type. F key opens File menu. Other keys effect other menus.

Thank you for any help you can provide,
Craig

Even while the key was not there the problem continued, so it is not just a jammed key or anything.Could this be some other issue? Thanks

A few times after that the same problem happened with different keys, making it impossible to do anything until I restarted the laptop. Answer:Trouble with typing keys

did you ever spill anything on your laptop? if its juice or the like, it may cause the keys to stick. if its just sticking without a reason, then you may want to try contacting the manufacturer for replacement keys and the mechanism that goes underneath. im guessing your laptop uses scissor keys.

I don't know what I hit, but I'm actually typing this from my husband's computer because I can't type anything from my computer now. When I type "t" it comes out t5. Then I hit backspace and it comes out with dashes. Nothing is what it is supposed to be. I have a Satellite Toshiba laptop and it runs Windows XP. I tried to reboot, but then I ran into another problem. I couldn't type in my password to let me back into Windows. Everytime I type "R" it shows that I typed 2 letters in the password screen. My mom said I might have numlock on, but as far as I can tell, it isn't on and even when I press function F11 it doesn't seem to do anything. I still have some kind of code enabled. How do I go back to regular typing?

Hi, I bought a Lenovo Essential G580 on 15th May 2013. Everything was working perfectly until yesterday when my keyboard started to type random characters. I had just put my laptop to sleep on the night of 20th July 2013 and when I switched on the laptop on the evening of 21st July 2013 the keyboard started typing random stuff. There has been no spillage on the laptop as its safely covered on my table and I am the only one living in my room. Also to make sure its not because of a software glitch, I tried the following: 1. Restarted the system multiple times2. Went to an earlier System restore point. (Tried 5 different one's)3. Refreshed the system4. Took a backup and Formatted the whole hard disk and reinstalled Windows.5. Switched off the laptop for the night and tried switching it on today morning. None of the above helped. So obviously it is not a software problem. Windows 10
Start - Settings - Ease of Access - Keyboard

Everything here is off. If i turn on the On-Screen Keyboard no keys are Highlighted (indicating they are depressed/stuck )
When I use the hard keyboard and sometimes even the onscreen keyboard its as if either Ctrl, Alt Win or something are pressed down as it just types shortcuts.
EG:

-H- typed into chrome browser address bar via onscreen keyboard types as normal
-H- typed into chrome browser address bar via hard keyboard brings up -Chrome://history- But now also on the onscreen keyboard Ctrl is Highlighted.
I click on the onscreen keyboard to deactivate the now highlighted Ctrl button and try again. Now things are different, as now both the onscreen keyboard and the hard keyboard both bring up ?Chrome://history- when -H- is typed ( Shift is not depressed )

This seems to randomly cycle one min onscreen keyboard works fine, next the keyboard works fine or they either work or none of the work rendering the computer useless.

I cant help feel it?s a software issue but im no pro and I don?t have an additional external keyboard to try but as the onscreen and hard keyboard work ok for a while sometimes I assume something is up and that?s what brought me here.

Hopefully this is clear enough to be understood and to help others who may have the same issue.

Hello there. Yesterday, I bought the Ideapad 310-15isk, and it's phenomenal in many aspects. However, I'm a bit bothered by the extensive keyboard this laptop has, most importantly, the pagination commands on the arrow keys. I've been meaning to find a solution to disable those and just make them work on the Numpad since it's really bothersome to type on and then go all the way back because of the return pagination key. Is there any solution for this to unbind those commands only on the arrow keys?

This is an odd issue that I have not found anyone else having. I am not sure as to the cause of it.

Basically, when I press certain pairs of keys, the computer acts as though another key is being pressed as well.
Some examples:
q+s: qws
w+d: wed
r+y: ryu
k+u: kui
l+i: lio

There are others, as well as ones with 3 keys triggering a fourth. They follow no general pattern (although wd, qs, ku, and li are the same pattern
on the keyboard, that pattern doesn't cause a similar response on other keys, like ef, rg, th, yj, etc.)

This problem has persisted as long as I have had this laptop. I got it used on Amazon. It said that, in terms of condition, it just had a few minor
scratches and such, which is accurate.

This occurs every time the keys are pressed at the same time (in fact, while typing this, I was constantly having to correct typos such as "everyu",
"lioke",  and "whiole".)

Hi guys,

Basically what happens is whenever I type 'b', it comes out as 'b4', 'B' comes out as 'B$', 'n' comes out as 'n7' and 'N' comes out as 'N&'.

This was a pain to type because of this problem. Wondering if you guys have a fix. Thanks.

when typing sometimes when i press a key it wont type. ive plugged in 2 different keyboards and the same thing still happens. at first i thought it was just terrible user error, but ive watchd myself type the keys and noticed that my key press wasnt registering. i noticed that it helps a lil to type slowly. (again its not just user error lol). i only have these typos when typing online.

i updated Acrobat reader, Java, and upgraded to ie9 platform. im still having a lil trouble with it, although it does seem to have improved a bit. i checked for updated drivers and i couldnt find anything.

need help troubleshooting this

thx

Answer:Random keys not typing when pressed

Sometimes, a thorough cleaning of socket and boards with a can of Dust Off or other treated canned air can resolve the problem...
Try a very simple keyboard from any source that you know is working well... Keep a record of the keys that work improperly.

I have an HP laptop with windows 8.1. My keys are typing multiple letters at a time. For example, when I type "e" it comes up as "ec" when I type "t" it comes up as "tv" all the letters make 2 letters with 1 click. just the numbers are working right. I cant even log into it because I can't get my password to type in correctly. Any suggestions?

Bought 2 Lenovo B570s in late October, and noticced about 2 weeks after I bought them when I started actually using them, that the keys would frequently repeat at random while typing.  Some keys do it much more than others, and in facct some keys don't do it at all I don't believe.  The worst offenders are on the left side of the keyboard in the middle and bottom rows, though I believe all the keys on the left sside do it to some degree, some keys just aren't used nearly as much as others.  I think I've seen the problem on the right side too, but very rarely and maybe not even all the keys.  I'm intentionally not correcting the duplicate keys that appear as I type this so you can see exxactly what I'm talking about andd how often it occcurrs.  BOTH of my brand new Lenovo B570s bought at the same store 1 day apart have the samme problem, so I find it very hard to believe that others out there haven't experienced this, it can't possibly be that much of a fluke, though it could be batch related.  If anybody has seen this, please reply (don't reply if you haven't).

You can press FN+F11 key to enable/disable the numpad.

Hey there,

I have a Logitech G510 keyboard, I never had any problems until i upgraded to windows 8. If i am typing and try and use the arrow keys to move around with in my text it will just put 3's and w's. I am unsure of what is causing this or what I would really call this problem. If anyone knows how to fix this problem that would be great thank.

Answer:Arrow Keys Problem While Typing

Have you checked the keyboardsettings?

You should find the options here ==> Configuration Screen/ Clock, language and country/ Language

Then chose for Options and check the keyboardlayout. A normal keyboard should be "US International" or "US".

You can also try to download the newest drivers from Logitech. Perhaps the old drivers are confusing Windows 8.

Good luck!

thinkpad keyboard problem - some keys generate multiple keys when pressed For example, "t" generates "tr", "y" generates "yu", "backspace" generates "backspace" plus "IBM access connections", "m" generates "mn" and "n" generates "mn".  Not all keys are wrong.  For what it's worth, the odd behaviour started shortly after a trip to Miami in which I had a meeting at a cafe in which we were undercover but it was pouring cats and dogs - it was like having a meeting in a sauna - so I am wondering if the high humidity could have caused the behaviour. I tried replacing the keyboard but the new keyboard has the same problem.   The machine in question is a Thinkpad T23 running Windows XP Pro Any help would be appreciated as I am now in Los Angeles using a borrowed Mac! :-)

At the left bottom of taskbar, right click windows icon, click on Control Panel, Ease Of Access, and then Change How Your Keyboard Works. If there's a check mark in box - Turn on Sticky keys) then uncheck it and click Apply.

Hi, Try the following. Download the AMD HD Graphics installer on the following link and save it to your Downloads folder. http://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp74501-75000/sp74716.exe When done, open your Downloads folder, right click the AMD Graphics installer and select 'Run as Administrator' to start the installation. When this has completed, shutdown the notebook. Unplug the AC Adapter and then remove the battery.  Hold down the Power button for 30 seconds.  Re-insert the battery and plug in the AC Adapter. Tap away at the esc key as you start the notebook to launch the Start-up Menu and then select f10 to enter the bios menu.  Press f9 to load the defaults ( this is sometimes f5, but the menu at the bottom will show the correct key ), use the arrow keys to select 'Yes' and hit enter.  Press f10 to save the setting and again use the arrow keys to select 'Yes' and hit enter. Start the notebook and let Windows fully load for a few minutes before checking. Regards, DP-K

Hi, I'm new to the forums and I am hoping someone can finally help me please as I am at such a loss of what to do next.

I don't know what I have done, or how it happened but some of keys have suddenly started typing the incorrect sign. For example if I press shift 2 I would expect speech marks but instead I get @

So if I press what should be the @ symbol on the keys I get speech marks " instead. If I press shift 3 I would expect to get a pound sign but instead get a hash tag and so it continues with many of the symbols.

This is very frustrating and I really don't know what else to do - I changed the language keyboard input to English QWERTY, no difference. I then read in the internet and changed to English US and still no difference. Any ideas would be much appreciated - thanks in advance!!

Suddenly as of this morning multiple keys on my laptop type their own key but also other characters. It mostly is just additional symbols rather than letters and tends to be the characters next door which they type.

For example:
1) typing 'p' gives 'p['
2) typing '0' gives '0-'
3) typing '-' gives '0-' also
4) typing '.' gives './'
5) typing '/' gives './' also
6) typing ';' gives ';''
7) and vice versa
Also num pad is not working!

So in short it's like a number of adjacent keys have become fused to each other.

I have tested this and it occurs in all programs and windows. On screen keyboard works fine though.

I have so far uninstalled the device driver rebooted and let it reinstall - changed nothing.

Can anybody help?
Thanks
Henry

Answer:Laptop keys also typing adjacent characters

Do you have another keyboard you can plug in and try? That will tell you if it's the keyboard (problem will not show with replacement) or the keyboard-to-PC interface (problem will persist with replacement). If you don't have an extra yourself, maybe you can borrow one from a friend /family/colleague/neighbor...?

My wife's 1 yr old L455-S5975 Win7 Toshiba worked great until about 3 weeks ago when numerous problems simultaneously developed. We decided to do a reformat (I think that it was actually a "recovery.")

The computer still isn't right. My wife can live with it but one of the very annoying things that its doing is delaying the display of letters that you type. In other words, if she's trying to type in "www.techist.com" the computer may display one of the first letters (w) and then stop displaying anything else as she continues to type. Then, all of a sudden, the next group of letters will instantly appear. It does this all the time and is very annoying. Other than a complete, full reformat, does anyone have any idea what it may be and how we might fix it?

Hey guys,

I'm having a really big problem with my keyboard. I'm running windows 7. The problem started about four days ago, I've searched for various ways to solve this problem but I couldn't find any.

The issue is that randomly, my keyboard will stop typing keys and every time I hit a key, instead of typing a key, it would act as if I was hitting a shortcut. Such as, when it happens i hit the "F" key and the tools options come up. This happens on every windows even on MSN messenger, I hit my keys and it hits shortcut keys for the window I'm on.

I would be using my computer for a while and the keys would work fine but then a little later, somethings 30 minutes sometimes an hour or two, randomly they turn into shortcut keys. Every key i hit, I tried a new keyboard but it seems to happen also. I don't get the issue, I've scanned fully using malwareBytes, MCAffee, and Advanced system pro, but it's still happening. It's really frustrating and annoying when it does happen. I've turned my keyboard off and on, re sync'd. I'm starting to lean more towards it being a virus or something that messed with my settings somehow.

Malwayre Bytes did find something while scanning

files\Spigot\wtxpcom\components\widgitoolbarff.dll (Adware.WidgiToolbar) -> Quarantined and deleted successfully.

Answer:Keyboard keys randomly turn into shortcut keys

I would also like to add that, when this occurs. I have to restart my computer for the keyboard to work correctly. It's wireless & I've tried a wired keyboard also, it's the same issue.

Also when this happens, while on the internet. Every time I click a link or the internet like "home" "news" anything at all on the internet even an image, it won't go to it but instead it will download the data into my computer... It's very strange & I'm completely stumped on what to do. Or to even search this on google for other similar issues, I don't even know how I would go around to search that. Or what I would type in the search bar. This happens with both Firefox & google chrome. Even outside the internet in just my desktop, it's impossible to type even on notepad.

I recently (w/in last 2 weeks) purchased and received an E545 and after less than 8 hours of use the keyboard is extremely loose on the right hand side, primarily where the number pad sits but also extend into the right side of the alpha keyboard.  By losse, I mean that it doesn't sit well and when you press down on a key in that area of the keyboard, the entire right side of keyboard depresses.  ti's very disconcerting when typing and also extremely loud, which is an issue since I use the machine in meetings to take notes.

I've not seen much in searching, except for threads that are several years old.  I wanted to get some user input before contacting Lenovo, as I'm sure it will be better advice and less of a hassle.

Many thanks in advance for any help.

Answer:E545 keyboard problem - many keys not working - loose keyboard cable

Hi,

Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums!

I?m sorry to hear that the entire keyboard of your Lenovo ThinkPad E545 depresses on key presses.

From what you have posted, it sounds like a keyboard flex. Keyboard flexing occurs if the board supporting the keys is not rigid or if the design of the keyboard is faulty. For good keyboards, the effect shouldn't be noticeable.

If you feel excessive flexing in your keyboard, try to reseat the keyboard. Since your system is under warranty, I would strongly suggest you to take assistance from Lenovo technical support.

Click here to open a link where you can select the country and get the exact contact support number. I?m sure they will be a great help.

Best Regards,
Mithun.

Hi,

I am using a Razer Arctosa keyboard on my desktop computer running Win7 (keyboard is approx 2 years old).

I am experiencing the following (recently, and sometimes it occasionally goes back to normal):

Pressing "w" registers "w4"
Pressing "W" (shift + w) registers "W$"
Pressing "4" registers "w4"
Pressing "$" (shift + 4) registers "W$"
(As if "w" and "4" are linked; occasionally it registers as "4w")

Pressing "u" registers "u" and F5.
(which means when I am typing and press the "u" it refreshes my page... this is the second time I am writing this...)

Pressing the Windows key registers NumLock toggle.

Pressing "7" registers "/7"

This is all of the weird ones I have noticed. All other keys seem normal.
As I type this it has done the above, but now it is back to normal. Cannot find a pattern when it decides to change from crap to normal. It is back to crap again.
This is the 4th day since it started and the computer has been restarted/shutdown various times.
I have also checked for malware and it is all clear.
The most recent keyboard drivers have been downloaded and installed, but did not fix it.
No liquids have been spilled.
Have searched the web and have not encountered a solution (or someone with the exact kind of problem).
Anyone has any idea of a fix or what may be affecting it?

Thanks,
Destinknee

Answer:Keyboard: some keys registering 2 keys

Pretty much every time I see this it's due to something spilled on the keyboard that has damaged it or just a keyboard that has failed.

Test it on another computer, if it does the same thing then it needs to be replaced. On the other computer don't load any drivers or software for it just plug it in and wait for Windows to install it's drivers for it and test it.

I have a Tecra A3 and are using it with a Microsoft Comfort keyboard. The problem is that ever since the keyboard drivers have been installed the function keys (i.e. Fn + F2 to change power mode) now carry out additional funcitons i.e Fn + F2 also brings up the My Pictures folder. The strangest on is turning the wirelss network card on or off with the switch on the front of the notebook. This has the additional effect of loading an extra copy of MS Outlook each time it is swithed.
I have the latest version of Microsoft IntelliType Pro (version 5.20.412.0)

Any idea on how to solve this?

Answer:Tecra A3 Keyboard Function keys and Microsoft Comfort Keyboard

Hi

Sorry but you have not explained do you have this problem now using notebook keyboard or external one.

If the problem persists using an external one I think that you can not use Toshiba FN+FX key combinations. Every external keyboard is specific one and in my opinion you should check user?s manuals and check also all additional functions. I am also pretty sure that you are able to configure some special keys on your own.

The issue with WLAN switcher is very strange. Try to remove Microsoft specific software and check if the functionality is like before.

As I wrote in the title, my Shift and Alt keys stopped working for keyboard shortcuts. However, the Shift key still works when capitalizing letters.

I've been dealing with this problem off/on for the past two weeks and haven't been able to figure it out. I've gone into Ease of Access features and turned on/off all of the available options (Mouse Keys, Sticky Keys, Toggle Keys, Filter Keys). I've pressed Shift for 8 seconds, and pressed it 5 times, and still haven't been able to correct it.

Thank you in advance for any help offered.

Possibly helpful additional information:
I've got a Spanish/Latin American keyboard layout installed in addition to the US English keyboard layout. I toggle back and forth with Left Alt + Shift (which is how I noticed my Shift key stopped working).
I play a game whose controls rely on a lot of Shift key pressing and holding.

Answer:Keyboard - Shift & Alt keys stopped working for keyboard shortcuts

When was the last time you used a can of air cleaner on the keyboard? If it isn't from contact wear often keyboards tend to get loaded up with dust and debris!

One example of that is having any snacks onhand around a pc where little bits get passed along from your fingers onto and under the keys themselves. Keyboards are known to get loaded up fast with any foods present!

I have a Dell M1330 Laptop that has served me quite well for several years. I just replaced the keyboard the other day and everything is working fine, except that the new keyboard has a slightly different layout than the old keyboard did. For example, with the new keyboard all the F1, F2, F3, etc.. keys have function secondaries on them like multimedia, brightness, antennae toggle, and so on. My old keyboard didnt have most of these and so when I attempt to use them on the new keyboard they simply do not work. In fact when I use function keys as if I still had my old keyboard installed the functions work, which means it is the software interpretation of the keys that I need to change. Does anybody know how I can fix this so that the keys of the new keyboard and functions match what the keys actually say?

Another thing to add is that some of the new function keys on the new laptop such as antennae toggle were not on my last keyboard at all because they are softkeys on the case of my computer, and I am not sure a function like that would be able to be added to the keyboard mapping at all, but I'm not sure.

Also, I would prefer to not install third party software to accomplish this, even if it means I need to delve into the registry manually. Can anybody help??

Also, if you cannot find a vendor I will say that it is only a cosmetic effect, better with a cosmetic defect than a functional one while replacing the key.

I had a problem with my laptop which is certain key on my keyboard is not functioning. The weird is, it happened without a reason. because after I shutdown doing my work when I turn it on again, I discovered my "s", "d", "g", "h", "\", "m", " left shift", "caps lock" and "~" key did not work at all. I try taking the key off, cleaning underneath, but nothing seems to be working. After that I try to use usb keyboard and it seems the key can be entered. So I thought my hardware is the problem. than I replace into the new one, but still having the same problem. I already waste my money buying new keyboard. Does any one happen to know what sort of problem this is and how I would go about fixing it? Is it related to the registry. My laptop is Acer aspire 4740G, ram 4GB, processor i3 2.4GHz. I hope someone can help me to solve this problem.

Hi guys, Something really strange started happening two days ago. Out of the blue the following keys stopped working: GHBackspaceWindows [email protected]' The laptop is a couple of years old and a bit dusty, so I took it to the local shop to get the keyboard replaced and cleaned. Seemed to be working fine when I left the shop. Then, a little while ago the space key and P stopped. Five minutes later they started working again but ctrl stopped and N is temperamental. I haven't spilt anything on it or knocked it. Any ideas what's going on?

I have just bought a Microsoft All in One Wi Fi keyboard with the Spanish Keyboard layout as I am based in Spain, which is working very well. I have linked it with a Minix Neo X8-H smart TV box but when I use the keyboard it responds as if I had used the keys on an English board. For example when I press full stop key with caps shift it does not give me a colon as on the keyboard but types a right arrow. The 8 with caps shift should give me a left bracket but in fact gives me a star.
Is there an easy way that I am not aware of to properly match the Spanish keyboard layout with my Minix.
Many thanks Helen G

Answer:Spanish keyboard keys behaving like English keyboard

Just a thought and I could be wrong. Have you set the smart TV box language to Spanish or English if it's set to English this may be the problem.

I have a Dell 7737 laptop and from time to time it develops a firmware glitch where random keys stop working for both BIOS Setup and Operating Systems. After such thing happens neither shutdown (Full shutdown / Fast Boot disabled) nor restart get the keyboard back to a normal state. At this point the only workarround is to disconnect the AC power cord and then either drain the battery or physically remove it.
This laptop's battery cover is not designed for daily removal and it is starting to get loose because of this BIOS bug.
I am running BIOS version A14 but this bug was present since I purchased the laptop with BIOS version A07. Sometimes I cannot even type my password because the random keys that stop working match those it uses.
Please Dell could you provide a BIOS hotfix for this annoying issue?

Hello all;

recently, my ASUS laptop keyboard has been acting really erratic. Some examples are that every time I press a key, it types a different key or another key along with it, some keys simply don't work at all, and some keys just initiate some kind of massive sequence of autotyping a single character or random characters.

At first, I thought something must be wrong with the physical keyboard itself, but the day after I noticed the issue (which is actually today), I discovered some functions of my internet browsers aren't working probably either and not only because of the unknown keystrokes. Some of the website certificates I visited suddenly weren't trusted.

To go along with that, the touch pad I use to navigate and click on items tends to go in and out, but the actual two mouse buttons work fine. Another strange quirk when I opened notepad was that somehow the auto-key strokes started typing my computer's date and time!

I have run the latest MalwareBytes anti-malware with a full-scan and did remove some malicious objects, but the problem still remains. Could I have a virus/key-logger? Can anyone help?

Thanks for any assistance

Answer:Keyboard typing on its own

Have you tried using another keyboard?
What model Asus is it?

The certificate problem could be the computer clock is off which usually means a bad CMOS battery.

EDIT:  Any chance some liquid could of been spilled on it?

So I decided to clean my usb keyboard so I opened it with some screw drivers, little did I kow the re-assembly would be so difficut. There where these little plastic pieces for each key but they where loosly placed on some plastic sheets. I did my best at placing everything and pluged it in.

It won't type now. First time it wasn't typing but then I did something, and it typed again but a couple keys where not, so I reopened, placed and tried again. Now it's not typing at all. I'm on the on-screen kb and when I press num lock and caps lock the little green lights do turn on the usb keyboard.

I've tried uninstallng and reinstalling the drivers many times but it doesnt work. Also, for some reason, 2 HID KB devices appear, and it keeps installing one of them when scanning for plug n play devices, even when it's not plugged in.

So help please, thanks!

Answer:USB Keyboard not typing

Its corrupted now. Better purchase a new one. Never open the keyboard to its last level(separating the plastic sheets), it damages your keyboard for life.

Hi

I got a laptop One K56-3N2 (Clevo P157SM) and it's keyboard keeps typing "\" without me pressing it. I tried cleaning the key but the problem persisted. I tried turning the "\"-key off / remapping it with an aplication and it did work in a way. I could remap the "\"-key to do something else, like to be a left arrow, and when i press it did work like a left arrow but it still wouldn't stop typing "\" without me pressing it.

Hey gang, maybe someone out there can help me with this?

Every now and then, for some unknown reason, my keyboard gets a mind of it's own and begins typing letters I didn't strike.

It only happens when I'm already typing, like I'll be writing something and suddenly my word will turn into "week444444444444."

For some odd reason, a group of numbers just show up sometimes, inserting themselves into words I'm typing.

I'm wondering if it's because I currently use a device to share a keyboard and mouse between two computers. Maybe once I unhook that device, things will work normally. Though I'm not having that problem on the other computer sharing the keyboard, so that might not be it.

I dunno, it's mighty confusing. I can live with it, though if there's a way to fix it, I'd certainly love to give it a shot.

Anyone out there got any suggestions? I'd sure appreciate them!

Cheers,

Snaithbert

on my keyboard to type a "@" i type "Ctr+Alt+Q". it works overall expect when I am in outlook 2010 trying to enter an email address - i.e. when I need it most.

Answer:keyboard not typing @

You don't say where you are I'll bet your '@' key is available if you press the 'Shift' and '2' keys (US keyboard), or the 'shift' and ' key (UK keyboard). If so it's because your laptop's keyboard is set to the wrong location. Go into Control Panel, 'region and language', then the 'keyboard & language' tab - change to whichever location your keyboard is from."I've always been mad, I know I've been mad, like the most of us..." my colleague at work uses a Dell Inspiron 1501, 512mb ddr2-4300, AMD mobile turion 64 2.0ghz running windows xp sp2, which i just updated to sp3
We have just reinstalled windows xp, as it was full of rubbish and we wanted to improve the speed of it
before i reinstalled, i noticed that on my computer properties, it said that the cpu was running at 797mhz, however at times it does go back up to 2.0ghz.
It still does this after the reinstall.
The main issue is that there is almost constant keyboard lag, each letter will take a few seconds delay before it is on the screen.
I have tried everything i know, has anyone else had this problem before??
Could it be anything to do with the cpu freq issue? or ram?
any help is greatly appreciated

Answer:keyboard/typing lag

If you've only got 512meg of ram for XP, then you only have HALF enough.
Dell is famous for NOT installing enough ram for the installed OS.

That computer will run MUCH better with a full gigabyte and even better yet with TWO.

When the keyboard is lagging it means that the CPU is too busy to service the keyboard. The keyboard has a very low priority.

Without enough ram, your OS is living off of the hard drive. That's over a thousand times slower than the ram it should be using.

Then if you've loaded some heavy duty, resource hog, like Norton, all bets are off for getting any kind of performance out of that underpowered system.

You could also have services that you don't need and background programs that you don't need....running all the time and just sucking up system resources.

Get more Ram.

Whenever I type on my Logitech G510, it doesn't type any characters but when I press "f" it'll bring up recent searches and responds, I'll edit as soon as I'm able to test the keyboard on a different computer, do any of you have any Ideas? When I go into device manager it shows that the device is responding correcting and is not reporting any issues.
EDIT: The keyboard is functioning on another computer.

Answer:Keyboard isn't typing

Restart your computer. You have a stick key problem. I forgot what exactly it is called and how to cure it without restarting since I had this issue, but it was a while ago.

Started a few days ago and has gotten progressively worse. Keyboard keeps typing stuff, not actual words just stuff like ?&!!!!!$ or the back button etc. Sometimes it's gone for a few hours and then it comes back even worse. I ran AVG which found nothing, Malwarebytes which found 4 infected files and deleted them, and Search and Destroy which deleted what it found. And yet, the problem persists.

I don't have access to the original Windows CD so I'm unable to reboot.

I would greatly appreciate any suggestions as I am way out of my element here.

HELLO ALL!!this happened 2 weeks ago and became already a serious and unfixable problem for me..., hope someone can help me, this is the story: i installed a program and 2min. later i decided to uninstall it, while the uninstallation process the computer gave me an error which i dont remember but then a pop-up displayed "successfully uninstalled" so i restarted windows, the problem begun here, since then the pc boots-up normally but when i press down any key to type my password the mouse's pointer gets completely freeze and nothing is been typed(all this in the "password" screen, it never gets access to windows) this with a PS/2 keyboard. I though the PS/2 connector was damaged or something so i changed the keyboard for an USB one, now the mouse pointer moves around ok but still cannot type a thing, therefore still can get into windows    , i tried already in SAFE MODE and going back to the last good config. but that didn't solve the problem, I CAN NAVIGATE THE BIOS AND MAKE CHANGES BUT IT SEEMS THAT THE LETTER KEYS DONT WORK.... the new keyboard works fine in other PCs.        HELP!!

Hi. I am using on-screen keyboard right now because my keyboard infinitely types M's if I touch it. Also, it continues typing M's on its own. I have tried taking the keys off and cleaning underneath, but that doesn't work and the key doesn't appear to be stuck down. It didn't type random M's when I restarted it the first time, but now even at login on start up it types M's. Does anyone have any idea what I should do? Thank goodness for on-screen keyboard though, eh?

Answer:keyboard typing by itself

it sounds like the spring is gone on the keyboard.

So what's happening is occasionally, while I'm typing, it repeats letters, as if the keyboard temporarily locks up. (Sometimes, but it's rare because I usually type continuously, it just stops me from pressing keys for a bit.) It's like "Hello my naaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa..."
And what's weird is it only happens after I pressed any of the lock keys before (disabling doesn't fix it.)
I'm using a keyboard connected directly to my PC, with up to date drivers.

So I have had multiple keyboards over time on my PC and all of them seem to type symbols such as; ~ and " twice and then not at all
I will show an example, so I go to type a dash (~) but when I do nothing appears, but when I do it again 2 (~~) appear or when I click space it appears?
This can happen with multiple symbols but not letters or words . . .
Any help, It is very hard to explain but if I need to post a video I will
Thanks

Just today, I started noticing some problems with my keyboard on my Windows XP Media Edition SP2 desktop computer. Every time I push a certain key regardless if I'm typing a post such as this or not, something unusual will occur. Here is some examples:

- Typing "E" will open My Computer.
- Typing "U" will open up the Utility Manager along with Microsoft Narrator.
- Typing "L" will log me out of my account.
- Typing "M or D" usually minimizes stuff such as Internet Browsers and takes me back to the desktop.
- Typing "R" brings up that Run Program field that you can access from the Start Menu.
- Typing "B" will make the current window inactive.
- Typing "F" will open the Search window for locating files on the computer.

Besides the letter "M", typing those letter mentioned above can only be typed by holding the shift button. So far, I tried turning off my computer and then turning it back on. The keyboard did work normally for about 5 minutes before the problem appeared again. I am now lost on what to do next. That keyboard is the only keyboard I have and it is a PS/2 type keyboard if that helps.

Answer:Typing on my keyboard has become a hassle.

You've got a stuck CTRL key. The things that open are exactly what would open if you used CTRL-[key]. Gently remove the CTRL key and clean around the contact. If you are getting sticky keys then it's easier to buy a new keyboard than to fiddle with a failing one. If you can borrow a keyboard then use it to test the system - I'm confident that the problem is as above.

My girlfriend's dad's computer is only typing these vowels on they keyboard, nothing else. I noticed you had entered late into a thread about this earlier in the year, in January. Is there any chance I could get some help fixing this for him? We just upgraded from Windows XP to 7 for him on a p.o.s. old machine with only about 35GB.

Answer:Keyboard on Windows 7 only typing ÁÉÍÓÚ

If you can provide a link to the other thread it might save repeating any suggestions that didn't help. Also could you let us know the make and model number of the computer - laptop or PC etc.Have you tried another keyboard (external one if it is a laptop)?Did this happen after the upgrade?Always pop back and let us know the outcome - thanks

If it happened recently, try a system restore. It could be some type of language setting that was inadvertently set.Uninstall keyboard in device manager and restart, it should detect and load the correct drivers. You have to be a little bit crazy to keep you from going insane.

I may have found the problem. It appears a few keys have become "linked" with each other. Here are the linked keys. Would buying a new keyboard fix this or should I reformat the HD?
