Preferred Solution: How do you put an Open Office document on to a flash drive?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I am wondering if anyone knows how to customize the "Open Office Document" program in Office 2000... this is the small program that archives shortcuts and has a tool bar on the left hand side with options that include : Web folders, Favorites, Desktop, Personal and History. I want to customize the "Look In:" tool bar...

Thanks,
Andrew

Answer:Office 2000: Open Office Document Shortcut

I can't find a single way to change that setting. So, here's what I'd do.

Go to your (default) folder in Windows Explorer. Right-click it and hit Create Shortcut. Then, right-click the shortcut and hit Properties. Hit Change Icon. Give it the Open Office Document icon and also rename it to Open Office Document.

Copy or cut the shortcut.

Go to C:\windows\start menu and delete the old Open Office Document Shortcut and paste the new one in there.

I cannot open an office document straight away like I could do in Windows 7. Is there any setting I am not aware of that need to be changed. Previously I would just double click and the document would open. Now I have to search for it when I try to open in the first instance.

Answer:Windows 10, why can't I open an office document right away?

I'm sorry but I'm not quite clear on the issue :/ are we talking about a simple word document? how about click once with left mouse and hit enter? I'm assuming you're currently using w10, but w10 doesn't change the behavior of your mouse actions..
You can always head over to control panel and search for "mouse", should give you all the relevant options

I have a weird situation opening a 'word' document. If we call this docA and I try to open it by clicking on it with 'Word' already running it will take 40 seconds to open. If I then close docA and open it again, it opens immediately. Similarly if I've previously opened docB then docA will open immediately. docA is only about 50k and other docs of various sizes are OK.
I've uninstalled and reinstalled Office XP which made no difference.
Any ideas very welcome.

Answer:Office XP Word slow to open first document

What is the brand and model of computer, and how much memory do you have?
There is a Microsoft Update for Office 2002 and XP that you should install if not already done.
First, I would run the free CCleaner, then consider others to remove congestion. Has your system been defragged? Have you run antispyware, adware, and antivirus scans? Suggest you run: Windows Defender, Adware 2.0.0.7, SpyBot 1.5.2. Or professional paid stuff such as AVG, SpySweeper, Spyware Doctor, Nod32, etc., if for no other reason than to rule out common causes.
Sometimes the problem is exacerbated by an install of a multifunction printer. HP, Lexmark, and Epson are particularly problematic. You would need to uninstall the printer, then reboot, and remove all evidence of it with RegClean, then reboot, defrag, then reinstall the printer.

Hi,

I need help with word 2007. When I open my document (.doc format), word automatically reformats it during loading. After this, I see a lots of garbage in the contents list. This garbage are in fact lines from my document. In the document they look just like other text, but they appear in the list. When I update the style of these lines (for example it uses normal and I just click on normal style), they disappears from the list. I save the document but next time word reformats it again and I have the exactly the same garbage in the contents list. I realized I can stop the formmating during document open by ESC, which at least does not corrupt the document again, but how do I repair the document permanently?

What is wrong with my document? How do I repair my document?

I have found that when I run word 2007 or any other office 2007 program and go to the open a file icon, you then get the open file window that has all of my word documents. Since I saved them with thumbnails, there is a thumbnail of each document saved. Now here comes the problem; over on the right there is the preview pane and when you click on a file for preview, I get the error message: "This file can't be previewed because of an error in the Microsoft Office Word previewer". Of course I have googled this problem, but I haven't found much info other that to run the program with the /a on the end of the desktop short cut which turns off many of Words add-ins and other things that I really don't know about. Yes when you run it in this mode, the preview handler does work as it should. Does know the cause of this behavior and have a solution?

Answer:Office 2007 Open Word Document Window

Since running the program with the /a locks out plug-ins and such, I should of known that a plug-in was causing the problem. I disabled Adobe plug-in and it now works. How about that.

Answer:Open Office Writer Format Confusing a document

I haven't got a copy of OpenOffice on any of my machines at the moment having moved on to the offshoot LibreOffice which is developing much faster. Here's some questions;
Do these grey marks print? Are they evident on other documents you open at the same time? If so I'm thinking aloud the lines that the document has the option to show non printing paragraph marks and formatting. On the toolbars look for the Backward "P" symbol likened by some to a musical clef. That toggles these on/off.

I have got two PCs (Desktop and Laptop) connected to each other through crossover cable.

They can see each other and they can ping each other.

Desktop has got Microsoft office installed on it,,,,laptop has not got installed Microsoft office.

Desktop has got a word document file called: invoice.doc

From Laptop (does not office installed) I tried to open the invoice.doc on Desktop,,,,but I could not.

Is this normal ?

Do I need to install Microsoft office on laptop as well ?

Answer:Open a word document via a network from a PC does not have installed office

Yes, you need the program on both machines (or whatever machine you want to view it on).

Sharing a file does not share the programs associated with it, nor is there a way to share most applications like office.

Currently I type in Open Office or Libre Office Writer. Export as PDF. Load the pdf into Draw, change the background color to white, then export as png. Then click okay to a popup. Then the png is written to the hard drive.

I have looked for a solution of just using their Writer program to export as png, but there doesn't seem to be any method to accomplish that. The 'convert pdf to png' programs out there look to take at least the same number of steps. I did try one.

I'm working on my Traveller site, with over 1000 planets/solar systems so far, and doing this over and over is becoming tedious.

I prefer a png for documents as it makes it easier to place and download them from my site.

Is there a way to accomplish this in fewer steps ?

Thanks.

You can reenable the gestures again by going to C:\Program Files\Synaptics and running the individual programs. I believe SynTPEnh will do it but it might be SynLenovoGestureMgr. For some reason Office 13 seems to kill the app in charge of gestures. I have no clue how to fix it but at least this way you don't have to reboot every time. (Note: once you go back to office it will kill it again so get your office stuff out of the way first, then launch the program)

I use one drive to backup my excel spreadsheets for my small business. I do all the changes on my laptop, save a copy to one drive, then my husband is able to access the spreadsheets from his ipad while he is on the road. What happens if he has a spreadsheet open on his iPad at the same time that I am saving an updated version to one drive?

Answer:Can I save a document update to one drive while the prior version is open on another device?

technically the updated verion should sync. Unless your husband makes changes to the existing or open sheet and saves it after you have done your changes it might update to the last one. Try one sample document to your needs and see how you go? YMMV

I am running XP and Word 2000 and Nortons. Word will crash if you leave the document open for a while (there is no specific time frame) and then select close (icon). The error - Microsoft Word for Windows has encountered a problem and needs to close. The details are: AppName: winword.exe
appver 9.0.0.3822
Modname: kernel32.dll
modvers: 5.1.26002180
offset 0001eb33

This has pretty much happened since I got this laptop. I have reformatted and reinstalled everything (due to another problem) and still have the same problem with word. I have used the same CD on other computers to install word and they do not have the same problem.

I use a variety of templates and plain documents in my work and can not pin point it to one template.

If you leave Word open with a document (no matter what size) and come back to it later this is when the problem happens. I started to get around it my saving first then closing, but this no longer works. The save completes and then I select Close and this is when it happens - you get the dreaded pause and then you hear the whirl of the computer and then you get the Microsoft Word for Windows has encountered a problem and needs to close. Firstly I could put up with it but is now just a nusiance.

Hi,

I work at a small non-profit and we have updated two computers with new computers running Windows 7. We use MS Word 2003. I have checked all threads on forum related to this issue, but nothing seems to correct our problem. I would be grateful for any help.

Description of issue: With a Word document open, one should be able to click "File" > "Send To" > Mail Recipient As Attachment", or any of the other mail options, and have the email composition window of Thunderbird pop up. What happens is that Word is attempting to send the attachment via Windows Live Mail. The computer basically freezes. If you try and abort or get out of Word, and error pops up stating you can't close Word until the email has been sent. Finally, you have to force a shut down of the computer.

Internet Explorer shows Thunderbird as default email client. I have check all of the other obvious places for setting the default email client, but I can't seem to find a conflict anywhere on the computer showing Windows Live Email as default client.

As a side note, this employee was using Outlook Express as their email client prior to the computer upgrade and all setting were imported into Windows Live Mail, which was initially used. The employee did not like Windows Live Mail, so I installed Thunderbird. It is used as the default email client and the only issue has been with Word. Additionally, I know that the document could be sent from Windows Explorer by right-cli... Read more

There is a portable Office 2007 out there floating around. Best solution would be to learn how to create such a thing for yourself from your own materials as downloading and using such a tool would be software piracy, yanno. If you've got Office 2007 already, you can easily learn how to make it "portable" with info over at the RyanVM forums or the MSFN site.

The issue is specific to Office 2016 on Win 10 (Office 2016 on Win 7, no problem, Office 2010 on Win 10, no problem). Certain documents (reported by a user who receives documents with Japanese text, haven't seen it happen with others) have the layout messed up, a 2 page Word doc gets spread over 4 pages, and I've been given some sample powerpoint slides which have text overflowing the end of the slide.

Word doc was originally in Legacy 2003 format, I did manage to make this particular document display correctly by saving it in .docx format, then enabling compatibility changes via vba, setting to 2010 compatibility and enabling "Use printer metrics to lay out document" based on what I read here: BUG!! Word 2016 fails to print margins correctly / messes - Microsoft Community

The other sample file I received was a .pptx - haven't been able to find corresponding compatibility options in Powerpoint.

Wouldn't be quite so annoying if they didn't both display perfectly in Windows 7.

Answer:Office Document layout/margins overflow on Office 2016 + Win 10

Turns out it was some sort of font substitution issue. I noticed the fonts in Word/Powerpoint weren't present in the Windows font dir. Copied them over from another Win 7 machine, suddenly everything looks fine.

Not sure why Office 2010 did a better job of it than 2016, I couldn't really pick if there was a difference in the Japanese characters before and after the font, only that the page layout was stuffed...

Windows XP SP2

All other USB devices (cam, scanner, mouse, keyboard) work fine. The USB flash drive is recognized by the OS. I can see the hard drive is installed and ready to use notification in the lower right corner.

Disk management will show the drive but w/o a letter. I can assign a letter manually and dir will list its content in command prompt. However, it won't show up in My Computer.

When I right click on the drive in Disk Manager and choose open, it will say the drive does not exist. Try again, this will actually open the drive, except that the address bar is blank. Then I can read from that folder correctly.

I've tried to remove all USB controller in device manager, reboot and let Windows re-detect/install them. Still the same problem.

What can I do to fix it?

Thanks!

Answer:Can't open flash drive

This is a common problem with some brands and models when they have been dropped 18 inches or more, and there are great histories of defective ones. You acn pay to get the data off a defective drive... but the technicians and companies who do it are extremely expensive.

We see as many as 12 to 15 failed flash drives brought in to our shop every week.

To make a long story short this is what happened to me. I went to Mexico for a weekend vacations and I took several pictures with my digital camera. Once I got to the hotel I used their computer to transfer the pictures into a USB flash drive. My USB drive was working well before I left to Mexico. Once I inserted the flash drive into their computer I noticed it opened up different than expected, but I just ignored it. That was the only time I used it in their computer to do this job. Today at my house I tried opening the same flash drive in my computer but it would not open at all. I could see the drive in my computer and showing some files stored in it but I was not successfull in opening my flash drive at all. I tried every method I could remember (using cmd command) and I got too many errors in the command. I once did this same method with my friends USB drive and it worked, but not with mines. Well, to finish it up I had to reformat my USB drive and seems to be working fine, but all documents I had in there are gone (luckily I have them backed up in my hard drive and also I was lucky not to delete the pictures from my camera). I know I saw some videos on youtube on how to recover the files from a USB by using the command prompt by now I cannot remember where to find it. Can anyone give me any suggestions on how to do this. This problem is solved by me, but I only need some ideas for the next time this may happen again to me. Next time I go somewhere I will take my persona... Read more

Thanks!

Hi,

I have a Kingston DataTraveler 100 (8GB) flash dive. My pc detects it, installs the driver but the USB doesn't show in 'my computer'.
So, I can't open it and the device is also not shown in 'disk management' but it is listed in 'device manager'.

I also have another USB drive that works perfectly, so my USB ports do not seem to be the problem.

Thanks.

Answer:Kingston Flash drive won't open

Try a "reinstallation". Leave the drive connected, then Uninstall it in the Device Manager, disconnect the drive from the PC and then restart the PC. After Windows starts, connect the drive and it should be detected and reinstalled. If there was some type of corrupted status this should fix it.

WHICH APP is necessary to get these excel spreadsheets to open, and how do I get windows to accept it so I can use them?

Answer:App to get spreadsheets to open from flash drive

Welcome to the forum.

Explore the flash drive and see what application is associated with the excel file extension(s). If it's not Excel, then it's just a matter of changing the association.

Yet another lovely problem with 8.1. When I plug in my drive, it shows up in with all of my other drives, and when I double click it to open it, the explorer window freezes, and doesn't unfreeze until I unplug the flash drive. I don't know what went wrong. This is a new problem that just came out of nowhere, and I'm wondering if anyone else is having this issue, and if they know of a solution. Maybe it is a driver issue? I am positive that the drive is fine, because it works on my laptop, and even works on this computer in a linux virtual machine. Thanks in advance for the help.

Hi MattB3692,
Okay these steps could help you:

_Search for "Device Manager" and expand the "Universal Serial Bus Controller" one do you see and exclamation marks in yellow?
_Can you scan the usb fash drive it may have infected files or virus.
Post back your results.

hi i have lenovo ideopad y580 i want to divide the HITACHI disk drive (750 GB) to 4 partion so i made the backup and i have it on my flash drive i need to know if there is a way to open the backup file from the DOS because the windows 8 i deleted from the laptop and now i can't open the backup

Answer:{HELP} is there any way to open backup.wsi from a flash drive ?

hi bishoy2013,

Welcome to the Lenovo Community.

A Windows System Image (.wsi) file is a full restore file and you can't pick any folders/files that you want to restore. You can't also mount it unlike VHD files or open it under DOS. What you can try is to:

1. Restore the image by pressing One Key Recovery button and point to the .wsi backup from your flashdrive to view the files (assuming you haven't deleted the hidden partition)

2. If the hidden partition is already deleted, you will need another lenovo PC that's preloaded with Windows 8. You will then need to copy the recovery partition from the other computer to your Lenovo PC using Aomei Partition Assistant Home Edition or EaseUS Disk Copy Home Edition as mark the partition as Primary and Active - this will load up the One Key Recovery 8.0 which allows you to restore the .wsi image.

3. Create a Windows 8 System Repair Disc using another PC and do a System Image Recovery and browse to your USB flashdrive backup.

4. Use a .wsi file opener software like Fileviewpro (haven't tested this since I don't have a Windows 8 machine available).

Hope this helps.

The default file system for most versions of Linux is EXTn where n is one of 2,3, or 4.

Windows will not read any of those without additional drivers.

However I have found a program like file manager that will read them.

Download, install, and use this program to open the files on that Flash drive. http://sourceforge.net/projects/ext2read/

Most likely the drive has failed and needs to be replaced. This is not at all unusual for these devices. Be sure you understand that these devices are unsuitable for primary storage of important files and should be used primarily as a transport media.

I just added to established files saved on my flash drive.  I now want to modify them and they won't open.  I'm using Libra Office 4.1.  I have an HP ProBook 4540s using windows 7 professional. My husband who is much more computer knowledgeable than I am, just sent one of the files from the flash drive to his computer.  He was able to open the file.  He sent it back to my computer and I could not open it.  He thinks that Libra Office is the problem.  It can't open the file (even though it did about an hour ago).  He thinks that I should down load a new version of Libra Office.  I'm now doing a complete virus scan of my computer.  Next will be down loading Libra Office.

Answer:Can't open files on flash drive

All fixed.  Nothing showed up in the virus scan.  I uninstalled my old version of Libre Office and installed the latest version.  Everything is working now.  Some how the old version must have gotten corrupted.

What do the shortcuts point to? Do they point to the file located on the flash drive, the file located on your hard disk, or something else. To find out right click on the shortcut and click properties.
How did you move the files to the flash disk?

What are you actually trying to do

Move the zip file to a flash drive.
Unzip the zip file contents to a flash drive.
What is in the zip file, documents, pictures a zipped up program.

You should be able to choose "Extract to ---- on the winzip menu and isert where you want it to extract to by entering the path details before starting the extraction.

Hi guys,

The title says it all. I inadvertently yank a 32GB memory stick out of it's port while it was still transferring files. Now when I click on it, or try to do a right click-properties, Explore just hangs. The progress meter at the top loads up but never completes and eventually Explorer just crashes. And it won't show any right-click menu.

I've tried plugging it into different ports both on the hub and the computer. I even tried adding a virtual drive with Alcohol 120% thinking that if Windows is forced to rename the flash drive, it might recover. Nothing worked.

I'm not too concerned about saving the data on the drive. Mostly just want to get it working again. This is a brand new drive and this was it's maiden voyage.

Thanx for any help you can provide.

I am trying to open files from my usb key. Each time I try to open the drive it is in, or files, it is extremely slow. I tried deleting or opening different type of files, and my computer always freezes, or it is not responding.
I tried on different computers, forced restart my computer, and it always acts the same way.

There is specifically a word file that I would like to access.

I would appreciate some advice.

Answer:Unable to open files on USB Flash drive-computer freezes

If it's occurring on multiple PC's, the drive is corrupted/faulty.

Flash drives are not reliable and they are meant as portable storage between computers. They should NOT be used as a primary storage device.

You can try formatting the drive and then testing it again.

Hi,

My PC has problem displaying flash drive icons correctly in file open and file save dialog boxes.

On my Dell Inspiron, there are 4 flash drives (Compact Flash, SD, Memory Stick, and xD/SM). The 4 drives' icons display fine from Windows Explorer but all 4 drive icons are missing in File Open and File Save dialog boxes. The problem exists in every application's file open and file save that I checked so I'm thinking it's a problem with Vista and not with specific application.

I'm running Vista x64 Home Premium.

Has anyone else encounter this problem? Does anyone have a solution for fixing these missing icons?

Hello Community,

I'm having an issue here, and reading through threads and forum posts - i'm getting nowhere.

I get no error messages when trying to open a file from a mapped drive.

I have a user onsite unable to open any Mircosoft Office 2013 files from any of his mapped network drives. If he takes the files, copies them locally to his laptop, then open perfectly fine. However, if i try to open a office file from their mapped drive, it just opens up a blank document.

--I've done the changing folder name of the Microsoft folder within %AppData%, still no luck.
--I've tried repairing Microsoft Office, still no luck.

I don't want to uninstall office, then re-install as i will have to drop the computer off our domain (Group Policy for some reason, blocks office.) *I'd prefer this to be the final option.

Surely there must be a fix around? Much thanks!

In my PC (Windows 7 Professional - 32 Bit Operatins System - Service Pack 1 installed) whenever I plug in Flash Drive, the system creates short cut for all the folders in the Flash Drive. The folders and its contents are safe.

But I am unable to Safely Dismount the Flash Drive and the system on choosing Eject the Drive will display "This device is currently in use. Close any programs or windows that might be using the device, and then try again." message.

If I go through My Computer - Right Click on Flash Drive and then Eject the system shows the following message

"F: is Currently in Use. Save any Open Files on this disc, and then close the files or programs
using the files before trying again. If you choose to continue, the files will be closed, which might cause data to be lost.

Cancel Try Again Continue"

If we choose Continue, system displays "Safe to Remove Hardware".

WHY THIS IS HAPPENING ??

I am having a laptop with same OS and there when I plug in the flash drive it does not create any short cut and no such problems.

Both the systems are having Symantec Endpoint Protection version 12.1.671.4971 and are upto date on Virus Siglature update.

Ok, so i want everyones impressions on the various Office Suites.

I personally if i had hte money would go for the Microsoft Office Pro series. I for one, think MS Word is one of the most refined word processing applications avalible. And coming a very close second is Open Office. I find my self having many problems trying to do somthing in Word, or Word crashing, so i switch over to my trusty free Open Office.

As for Corel and WordPerfect, my experiance is that it is way over priced, and is basically on the level of "word pad".

I am attempting to have the company i work for tranition from MS Office to Open Office, but just for a control i thought i might throw in Corel.

So what are your guy's and gal's thoughts on the various office apps?

Answer:MS Office vs. Open Office vs. Corel WordPerfect Office

Openoffice is an extemely close second to MS-office and that is for one thing

Calc's graphing wizzard: It is horrendous. As an engineer I need to admend graphas add new plots... and it is soo hard with openoffice

There is suppose to be a more MS-wizzard with OO-2.1 so until then Openofffice is 2nd
When the new wizzard is shipped it takes first place very quickly and by a signifcant margin

I understand that if a user installs Open Office on a machine with conventional Office 97-2003 that Open Office will use its own suite of products for each application. (Unless the user ops to use Office to open the applications by unchecking the corresponding application boxes during Open Office's installation.) But if a user chooses Open Office as the default for applications on a system that also has Office 2007 on it, how does Open Office deal with this if the OO applications remain checked as the default?

Does the current version of OO even understand how to DEAL with the new Office 2007? I understand that OO can not read docx documents, which is the default for Word 2007, (although this can be easily changed back to doc.) I found out that Open Office 3.0, scheduled for release this fall, will be able to read docx documents. What's so great about docx docs anyway?

Using my example, assume this situation on a new Windows Vista machine. (fresh installs of each program or Office 2007 OEM (factory installed.) What behavior would be expected here?

A neighbour has just asked me about a problem they have with Office 2003. They can start Word, Publisher etc fine and create documents but when they try to Open them again it fails and a warning 'Doument not available' comes up.The documents are there though and if a Word file is saved as RTF it can be opened by Wordpad, but not by Office 2003.They have had Office 2003 installed for about 10 days. I believe it has been activated. Any suggestions as I have not used Office 2003?They have a recent machine running Windows XP Pro.

Answer:Office 2003 - Document Not Available

but could it be that they are saving as some other version of word. They may have to use save as and scroll up and down the list of save options to find word 2003 doc or some such.

Is there anyway to tell how many times, what times and dates, or what length of time an Office document has been opened? i.e. is there a way for someone to know that the last time it was opened it was open for 2 hours or 2 1/2 hours...etc.

Thanks!
