Excel 2010 Find & Replace Can't Find Error

Question: Excel 2010 Find & Replace Can't Find Error

Find and Replace - Excel 2010 "Can't Find"I have used Find and Replace for years. I am trying to use it with Excel 2010 (my company just upgraded). Every time I try it (with new files, old files, or otherwise) it says it cannot find anything. My worksheets/books are not protected.I should specify that I am trying to find cells that are green and change them to clear. This used to be so simple! What do I do?Thanks for your help!

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Excel 2010 Find & Replace Can't Find Error

What version did you upgrade from?I have found that while using VBA to set/determine the fill color of cells, some of the ColorIndex numbers didn't match between the 2 versions.For example, in 2003 I filled C3 with Green, making sure I chose the Green that popped up "Green" when I hovered over the color in the dialog box - in other words, not Sea Green or Dark Green, just Green.When I ran this code, it returned 10:
Sub WhatColor()
MsgBox [C3].Interior.ColorIndex
End Sub
When I did the same thing in 2010, again making sure I chose Green, the code returned 14, which tells me that the Green in 2003 is different than the Green in 2010.In fact, when I saved the 2003 workbook and opened it in 2010, I couldn't find a matching Green in the Find/Replace dialog box.Click Here Before Posting Data or VBA Code ---> How To Post Data or Code.

Hi guys,

In my Excel 2010 workbook there is a cell with the value of "90" in type of number/general. When I go to find and replace dialog box and try to find the number "90" by typing it in Find what rectangle, then I want the program looks for it in formulas (look in: Formulas). But it shows that "90" as the result! Why? I said it to look for it in Formulas not in values.

Answer:Excel 2010, find & replace

If I understand you correctly, the 90 is a value computed from a formula in that cell.

You should search for 90 as a value if you want to find that cell.

Searching for 90 in a formula would mean that you are searching for the number "90" somewhere within a formula, not within a cell value.

If the formula in that cell was =110-90, I would expect that a search for 90 in formulas would find that cell.

If the formula in that cell was =110-20, I would not expect that a search for 90 in formulas would find that cell. A search for 90 in values would find it.

If the formula in that cell was =110-90+70, I'd expect that cell to be found by both searching for value or searching in formulas because 90 is the value of that cell and 90 is also found in the formula.

I have a spreadsheet that has a hidden formula that colors the cells red if above the spec limit or yellow if below the spec limit. The author of the spreadsheet did not use "conditional formating" to color the cells when extracting data from a database. I want to change the color of the cells to make it easier to view. Can a command such as "Find & Replace" be used to change the color? I have been changing the cell color manually.
Thank you for your help.

Hi I need a Macro to support the following:

Search Column C for cell(s) containing the content of B1 and then replace all instances of B1 (located in Column C) with the content of Cell A1. and so on, and so on.

I found what I believe to be the solution here in an old thread below although the solution does not appear to be attached! Please help.

HI,

I have a huge product listing that i need to find and replace on a mass scale. I have one spread sheet that has 3 columns (see example below)
Column A****************Column B**********************Column C

In essence Column A is the id for column B (A=B), column C is longer than column a and b, because it contains duplicate (M)numbers. I would like to use the defined id in column a to replace the (M)numbers in columns c

So the spread sheet with the end result would look like this

EXCEL 2010: Find and Replace

When using this dialog box, I can click find tab and enter 99.90 to find, select "within:sheet", select "search:By Row", select "Lookin:Value" Note, choice for lookin:[ formula, comment, value].
Search results, found 28 entries.

Now the problem, I can click replace tab and enter 104.90 to Replace, select "within:sheet", select "search: By Row", select "LOOKIN: "WANT VALUE" But "FORMULA" IS THE ONLY SELECTION". Where did the "VALUE" SELECTION GO? as a result, Message, "Microsoft excel cannot find the data you're searching for". I am looking for a number not in a formula. Do Anyone know how to make "VALUE" the default selection instead of "FORMULA" or just how to make replace work? A tweaking for dummies answer would be great.

Answer:Excel 2010 Find and Replace:Value " as default"

You can use "Match entire cell contents" to exclude formulas.
Say you have 1234.56 in 2 cells.
One is formatted as General, the other is formatted as Comma Style.
If you find by formula, you get 2 results.
If you find by value, you get only 1 result.
Therefore, "in value term", 1234.56 not equals to 1,234.56.
If you are finding a range of values, then you need helper columns or use macro.

I am using find/replace to find double spaces between my sentences and replace them with single spaces in MS Word 2010.
In the first document that I open, Find/Replace works great. In any document after that the function will not work. It will usually add a space or two instead of subtract it.
If I close out the documents and shut down my laptop, power back up, open a new document, then it will work, but only for the first document again.
So frustrating and time consuming. I could have done it all manually with the time I have spent researching.
HELP!!

SteEring with steering and similar spelling errors, such as: CheEring, PeEring, JeEring, etc.

Entries are:

Find what = Ering
Replace with= eringUsing the "Match suffix" option, the following message is displayed when the "Replace All" button is clicked:
Word has completed its search of the document and has made 4 replacements.

However, no replacements occurred.

This behavior is the same for Word 2010 (Windows) or Word 2011 (MAC - an acquaintance's computer).

So, am I missing something or is this a bug?

I have searched this forum and tried several web searches, all unsuccessful. Can anyone help?

Hello there,
I work with Excel 2007 and have a problem:
I have a spreadsheet with data scattered all over. I need the email adresses that are on this spreadsheet in a list. When I do the Find and Replace and search for the @ sign, it shows me all the search results in a new window. How do I copy that list and paste it in, say, another spreadsheet ? We are talking about 1944 email adresses! I am already done with my nerves at this point and I need help badly! Thank you in advance!

Answer:Excel find and replace

Hi Susevienna. Welcome to the forum.

I think your best bet here would be to use Advanced filter.

Sort & Filter > Advanced

For your list range: Select your data
Criteria Range: Create heading(s), which matches that where your email addresses sit under. Multiple headings if required. Under which, put in "*@*" without the quotes.

You can select 'copy to new location' and select the new location to which you'd like your list to go.

Hope this makes sense.

I have used an Excel 2010 spreadsheet to prepare a rota of tasks for the local church. Some of the tasks would be carried out by two people working together. Accordingly, a single cell might contain the text "Jim & Bill". I would like to print out individual copies of the spreadsheet with each person's name highlighted so that they can easily see when they will be needed. However, if, for example, I use Find and Replace to find just Jim and replace it with just Jim in red, Excel actually replaces the whole of Jim & Bill in red. In effect, I am asking if there is a way to replace just part of a cell so that Jim could appear in red whilst Bill remains black.

okay here it comes. I need to find a way to find replace data on a big scale for excel 2003. I have a bunch of numbers(5m or so) that correspond to a different number. I don't know how to write a macro at all, and am currently find replacing, but this seems like it's going to take a life time.

Example:
Worksheet1
1____________ 10000
2____________ 93233
3____________ 43234

Worksheet 2 parenthesis is a cell
(1) (2) (2) (1) (3) (2)
(2) (1) (2) (3) (2) (3) etc.

I need to make worksheet 2 numbers change to represent the numbers corresponding to worksheet 1 so for every (1) that comes up it changes to 10000. I hope I explained this right. Please Help, I will continue find replacing while I hope for an answer.

Answer:Odd Find Replace Excel God Needed :)

The simplest and quickest way is to use built-in Excel functions.
You will need a 3rd worksheet for metadata. Not knowing the actual sheet names, I'll assume they are called

Sheet1
Sheet2
Sheet3
Also, let's say Sheet1 has the data in columns A & B, and data in Sheet2 begins at cell A1
So, in Sheet3, in cell A1 you will need this formula:

Code:
=VLOOKUP(Sheet2!A1,Sheet1!A:B,2,FALSE)
Extend the formula for as many cells as you have in Sheet2.
When ready, click on the upper left corner of Sheet3 to select all cells (i.e. the whole worksheet), press Ctrl+C, then from menu select Edit -> Paste Special -> Values.
As a result, you will have the desired numbers in Sheet3. You can then copy them to Sheet2, if you wish.

Jimmy

Edit:
I have assumed that 1____________ 10000 in your post means 1 in column A and 10000 in column B.
If 1____________ 10000 is in a single cell, then the above formula will not work, another one, a more complicated one will need to be used. I'll wait for you feedback before working it out.

Hi there,I have 2 columns and I need to find a function to look for for text from eg. cell A1 in whole column B and return with the text after comma from column B eg: A1 "Smith, Bob", somewhere in B:B we have "Smith, Bob Adam" so in col C I need "Smith, Bob Adam" ... if that make sense?I would really appriciate some help :)

Answer:Excel find and replace function

Your question is just a bit confusing. First, your Subject Line says "find and replace" but I don't see where anything is being "replaced". It seems that you are simply trying to "find" a matching value and return it.Second, you said "return with the text after comma from column B" yet your example seems to indicate that your want the entire contents of the cell returned, not just the text after the comma: so in col C I need "Smith, Bob Adam" So, assuming that you want to return the entire cell contents, I would try the following procedure. The Columns you use won't matter, as long as you follow the rules for VLOOKUP. In Column C, enter this formula and drag it down:=LEFT(B1,FIND(" ",B1,FIND(" ",B1)+1)-1)This will strip off the e.g. " Adam" (space + Adam) from the values in Column B leaving e.g. Smith, BobIn column D, enter this formula and drag it down:=MID(B1,FIND(" ",B1,FIND(" ",B1)+1),LEN(B1))This will place e.g. " Adam" (space + Adam) in Column DIn Column E, enter this formula:=VLOOKUP(A1,$C$1:$D$6,1,0) & VLOOKUP(A1,$C$1:$D$6,2,0)This will lookup the value in A1 in Column C and in Column D and concatenate them back together, returning Cx & Dx, e.g. Smith, Bob AdamClick Here Before Posting Data or VBA Code ---> How To Post Data or Code.

Hi
Try this solution. In column C enter this formula;
=REPLACE(A1,FIND(B1,A1),LEN(B1)+1,"")
and copy it down the length of the data. If the result is as you want it you can then copy the entire column and pastespecial/values into column A if you want to overwrite that data. See the attached for how the formula works.

Answer:Solved: Excel Macro find and replace

The macro I wrote for you put the value from Column A which corresponds to the value in Column B in Column C
What do you exactly need?
If you want the value in Column B to replace the value in Column C then the result is the same as the source.
At least if I edit the macro to do that that is what happens.

below the original macro

Code:

Sub YourQuestion()
Dim rng As Range, rng2 As Range
Dim rVal As Integer

For Each rng In Range("B2:B" & WorksheetFunction.Max(2, Range("B" & Rows.Count).End(xlUp).Row))
rVal = rng.Offest(0,-1).Value
Columns("C:C").Select
Selection.Replace What:=rng.Value, Replacement:=rVal, LookAt:= _
xlWhole, SearchOrder:=xlByRows, MatchCase:=True, SearchFormat:=False, _
ReplaceFormat:=False
Next rng
Range("A2").Select
End Sub

the changed macro

Code:

Sub YourQuestion()
Dim rng As Range, rng2 As Range
Dim rVal As [COLOR="Red"]Variant[/COLOR]
For Each rng In Range("B2:B" & WorksheetFunction.Max(2, Range("B" & Rows.Count).End(xlUp).Row))
rVal =[COLOR="red"] rng.Value[/COLOR]
Columns("C:C").Select
Selection.Replace What:=rng.Value, Replacement:=rVal, LookAt:= _
xlWhole, SearchOrder:=xlByRows, MatchCase:=True, SearchFormat:=False, _
ReplaceFormat:=False
Next rng

Hi guys,

i don't know anything to Macro and looking forward to learn Excel Macro. Just wondering if there's a place i can learn this from scratch?

BTW. I am getting tired doing this more than 100 times/day copying, matching and replacing the data in different workbook. Could anyone of you here teach me how to make a macro to help me out? I'll really appreciate your help.

My data structure as below:

workbook1:
A*******B*******C******
1*S_ID****Date*****Quantity*
2*103*****1/1/09***25******
3*100*****1/20/09**50******
4*105*****2/14/09**43******
5*104*****2/18/09**75******
6*101*****2/22/09**574*****
7*102*****3/1/09***240*****

workbook2:
A*******B******
1*S_ID****Quantity*
2*100*****210******
3*101*****100******
4*102*****80*******
5*103*****15*******
6*104*****500******
7*105*****300******

When i execute the macro/shortcut in workbook1, it will find the matching S_ID in wb1 and wb2, then replace the quantity from wb1 to wb2 correspondingly; and repeat until the end in wb1. As a result, the ending result will be like this:

workbook2:
A*******B*******
1*S_ID****Quantity**
2*100*****50*******
3*101*****574******
4*102*****240******
5*103*****25*******
6*104*****75*******
7*105*****43*******

hopefully can hear from anyone of you guys soon regarding this macro. Thanks in advance.

ususim. Welcome to the forum.

Assuming you will have both workbooks open at the same time - this can be solved by using the formula VLOOKUP.

in workbook2, B2

=VLOOKUP(A2,[Book2]Sheet1!$A$2:$C$9,3,FALSE)

copy this down the row.

NB. $A$2:$C$9 is the area in workbook1 covering all you data. HTH

Hi,

I'm having some problems with the familiar feature "find/replace".

I have made a query from a web page to a sheet, foreign currencies. As it turns out the currency decimals are marked with dots, not commas and I need commas that I can do some calculations in Excel. Therefore I made a macro (because the query and the change must be automatic) to change the dots in to commas in G to K columns:

Sub ChangeDots()
Range("G:K").Replace What:=".", Replacement:=","
End Sub

As it turns out the find/replace macro doesn't work as it would when using normal shortcut selections (Ctrl+f, >replace....), but instead the macro only removes the dots, without adding the commas, Except if the number starts with a zero. =>(e.g. 1.2345 will transform into 12345 and 0.1234 to 0,1234)

Does anyone have a good explanation/solution for my problem?

Hello There,
I have ben trying to find out how I can use a list (with two columns in Sheet2) to do find and replace in another sheet (Sheet1). Basically, I want to change the text in a list (in Sheet1), based on text I have in the other list. There are multiple values of the same text in my list (Sheet1), and each needs to be changed to another unique text value.

I have been doing this in the past with multiple nested if statements, but thought there might be a quicker easier way. I have also realised that Excel won't nest 60 if statements. (or will it)..

My formula looks like this (nested if's)

If("Current Text1"="List Text1","New Text1",If("Current Text2"="List Text2","New Text2",... ...,If("Current Textn"="List Textn","New Textn"))

And My spreadsheets look like this:
Sheet 1
Name Current_Text
Mr_A Site_1
Mr_B Site_2
Mr_C Site_2
Mr_D Site_3
Mr_E Site_1
Mr_H Site_4
Mr_I Site_3
Mr_J Site_5
Mr_K Site_4

Sheet 2
List_Text New_Text
Site_1 New_Site_One
Site_2 New_Site_Two
Site_3 New_Site_Three
Site_4 New_Site_Four
Site_5 New_Site_Five

(I have tried to show the columns using spaces, as I don't know how to format the text properly. I Have also attached a spreadsheet showing the structure.)

None of the text corresponds between the old and new names, but there are a finite number of old site names that I need to change, and all occurences of each old site name are the same (... Read more

Hello. I am attempting to develop a macro that will allow me to find a number in column D and replace that value with a text name. I have 31 - 5 digit codes with 31 corresponding text names. The spread sheet is 10,000+ entries and growing every day. For example, I would like to find all instances of "21021" (in column D ONLY) and replace them with the word "Boyle." And so on, for all 31 codes. I'm new to Macros and could really use a little help to get me started!

Use Ctrl+F to select the Find and Replace Dialog Box in Excel and release the keys without clicking or selecting anything else. Next, then hold down the following keys (in order) alt+spacebar+m (to move the dialog box) and while holding these keys down then use the arrow keys to move the box.This will work with any windows PC item you might be missing. Just do a google search for the the shortcut key for the item you are trying to move and replace the Ctrl+F with the shortcut key of the item you are trying to get back.message edited by smarty_a55_1

I am not sure how good that is going to look once i post this, but here is a rundown of what it is.

Lets say those are 3 columns, A, B, and C. I would like to have a macro or script that will take what is in column B, which is also inside the text of column C, and change the text AMDRG.CCM to what is in column A(AMDRG.SA). So when i am done, the info in column C will look like this...
CTFACmpMkt='AMDRG.SA' + 'AMDRG.CTA'
Column A and column B will always line up with eachother, but column C will not always line up right beside the cells associated with what the replacement text is.

Thanks for any help that you can give!

Hi Guys,

I'm using with much profit a code that I have found in this forum:

Sub ReplaceString()

StartRow = 1
EndRow = 10
For i = EndRow To StartRow Step -1
Columns("C:C").Cells.Replace What:=Range("A" & i).Value, Replacement:=Range("A" & i).Offset(0, 1).Value, LookAt:=xlPart, _
SearchOrder:=xlByRows, MatchCase:=False, SearchFormat:=False, _
ReplaceFormat:=False
Next i
End Sub

Acutally this search coloumn "C" for values in Coloumn "A" and if found replace those values in "C" with what you have in "B:".
Example:

Before MACROAA1ABB1TCC1NB1B2B1After MACROAA1A1BB1TCC1NB1B2B2

what I need is the replaced value in "C" be highlighted as already in the example (iether by red fonts or green interior is ok).
The code need an addition to do that.

Could you help me please?

thanks!

To get a green fill the code you could use would be
vCell.Interior.Color = vbgreen

but is you place this before Next cCell, I think all the cells for vCell would turn green.

You turn the colouring back to normal by using

vCell.Interior.Color = xlNone

Give it a shot

I have two columns of ID numbers, A1:750 and B1:750. In each columns there are some IDs that are the same but also some IDs that are different. When all of the IDs in both columns are the same, I sorted them in ascending order and then used =EQUAL to see if they were the same. I'm really new with macros, but I want to know if it is possible to do the following scenario and how to accomplish it:

I have two sheets in one workbook. On sheet 1, there is an inventory which contains codes, dates, titles, and most importantly, subjects in 6 columns (G-L). On sheet 2, I put the old subjects (from G-L on sheet 1) in column A and the new subjects in column B. I want to utilize a macro to find all the "sheet2 column a" subjects on sheet 1 (match entire cell contents) and replace them all with the new "sheet 2 column B" subjects. Can this is done? How would I do it?

Thank you for any advice you might have, I truly appreciate it!

*******************************www.lynchie.com/cat/uk

This is a simple find and replace. However, I have approximately 1,000 pairs in column A and B which need to be found and replaced in Column C (and Column C is 100,000 rows+).
Is there any macro / process which I could use or I'm I doomed to do a find and replace 1,000 times?

Any help / suggestions would be hugely appreciated,

Thanks

I'm now trying to do a simple find & replace in the NEW set of spreadsheets, to replace a bit of the old file link references with the new address of the other 4 files in the set i.e. a kind of "find all cells with file links including the word 'original' and replace with 'new' " exercise.

First (the dumb bit) - file/edit/find brings up the find dialogue box, but the 'replace' button is greyed out - why???

Next - is there a simpler way of changing the link references than find/replacing bits of their address wherever they appear in each file?

Hi all,
I recall being able to add the "find and replace" option to OE a while back. I think it was linked somehow to Microsoft Word or Notepad which has this option. I would like to remove (<<) from forwarded emails directly in OE rather than having to cut and paste to notepad and remove the (<<). I know my old imac's OE had an option to "clean up text" or simular which removed all the quotes. I don't see this in todays OE for XP though.

I do recall there being a tweak that added this function though.

I am fairly new to excel and have a question in regards to an easy way to retrieve data from another table using an array formula.I have two files that I am using that contain 2 sets of data with columns for name, address, city, and state. I have a small sample of the spreadsheet attached.I attempted to use an if/and statement :=IF(AND(D2=C8I:I,E2=J:J),H2,0), but found out that it does not work with arrays and only found the first address by default. How would I set up a formula to retrieve the possible names using criteria from the blue data such as if the address and city match, then input that company name? I don't know why they changed this. I hate the navigation pane you get now when you use Crtl + F instead of the Find & Replace. It's a real "pain", yes pun intended. Now I know Find & Replace is Crtl + H but after x number of years using Ctrl + F I just can't get used to switching. Plus, it's still Ctrl + F for searches on websites, etc. so it's very confusing.

So my question is, is there any way to change the keyboard shortcuts so Ctrl + F would bring up Find & Replace like before?

With vba (a macro) you could use the following:
Chr(10) is the return, Enter code
Chr(13) is the carriage return

However, there is trick:

If you press Ctrl+F (which opens the Search and Replace) you could then go and sletect that portion of txt that has the line feed end or return in it Copy this portion of seemingly blank text, paste if in the Search field and put a 'in the replace.

I've tried this and it works.

You can use it for the eintire worksheet and all will be replaced.

I wrote an application in MS Excel VBA using forms, seven years ago, it is quite large, it has worked without problem on the same PC for the full seven years.I am now in the process of upgrading the PC, the problem is that when I run said application on the new PC or indeed any other PC I get the above error and it highlights 'time' and 'date', these I know are ordinary VB functions. I have checked the References and they are all OK. I actually had this problem originally on this PC but unfortunately I did not make any notes so any help would be appreciated.

Hello...

[I need to know if there is a function...perhaps a Macro or Query...or a more complex 'Find & Replace'...that can accomplish the following...'cause my database is huge; & I'm hoping not to do this manually]:

I keep an Access database for my homeowners' association on the condition & conformity of 24 different exterior attributes, for about 2400 townhomes. The Board of Directors wants to move away from using the term "Grandfathered", which is distinguished by the acronym "GF" in the database column that shows conformity (labeled IAW). We use this database to generate annual architectural reports for our 10,000 residents.

Our board wants the entry "GF" replaced with a "Y"...they want the GF entry removed from the report completely; & they're serious about it.

Now...I have already created a Query that has located all the GF entries in their various columns of various records...which our Board wants me to use in an internal "in-office" database (in order to keep track of what attributes actually were grandfathered originally...as a reference for our field inspector when he inspects the townhomes).

But we also want to create an unassuming symbol on the report...perhaps an ~ or a *...something that will alert the inspector to an attribute that once was grandfathered, on his field report. [This is to be done so that he will not
be flying blind when he comes across a non-con... Read more

Question: Find&Replace help

Does anyone know of an app that is capable of searching files in a folder for a particular string then replacing them with a replacement string.

I have folder with approximately 1500 ini files in it. In each file there are approximately 1 to2000+ "..\DATA\" entries which I want to be replaced with "\". I'd take me forever to open each ini file in notepad to do a find/replace on that string.

Does anyone have a clue where I can look?

Answer:Find&Replace help

get a self respecting operating system where tools to do stuff like that come standard.

otherwise, you could try loading a shitload of them into notepad++ at a time, then do find and replace across all the loaded files.

Or install cygwin and and write a shell script to do it.

I'm not sure if you can highlight the word but you can change the color of the font, shade the cell etc. Find & select, replace, format, text & fill.

Question: Find AND Replace

I find this feature very useful and very powerful in Word 2003.

However I have found the following code in a document without knowing what
it does. I think it is linked with some Find and Replace sequence.

(<*) ([! ]@)^13

Can anyone explain what each bit of code does sequentially ?

Regards

Answer:Find AND Replace

That doesn't look like code, looks like plain machine garbage. Sometimes it's because of corruption or not being able to substitue a font.

Question: find and replace

i'm using frontpage and dreamweaver to design a webpage. is there anyway to search and replace the text of a specific area? the code on my website is similar all the way through i just need to change certain links. so what i intend to do is copy the lines and then search and replace where necessary. the problem with this is when i do the replace it replaces all the code including the original code that i want to keep. please help!

Answer:find and replace

In Dreamweaver do this:Click on Edit then click on Find and replace, or use the Ctrl and F key shortcut.You can select where in the web site to look from individual files, open documents, current document, selected text and so on.You can also select to search within text, source code, advanced or a specific code tag, then you can choose further search options to help your updates.FrontPage has a similar feature where you can select from various options for searching all pages or the current page. Your best bet is to stick with the manual find and replace, since when you find a snippet of code or text you can manually choose whether to replace it or not, rather than leaving the automated find and replace to run riot through your entire site. Only use the automated find and replace if you are 100% certain that all instances of your search are to be overwitten.If the change is widespread you might consider making a template page for your site. All pages created from the template will be automatically updated with any new information when you change and save the template. I often use templates for sections of a site, so that I can alter one section, say, a few pages that list the services I offer. I can update the template page, change one link and all pages linked to the template are changed in one fell swoop. If you want to control your site it makes sense to divide it into small chunks in subfolders and keep a template for each site area. This allows you to update one portion ... Read more

Greetings,
I have a WordPad document that is divided into numbered chapters and verses. Instead of changing the font size of the 'numbered' items one at a time, I tried to copy a number (let's say 1) in font size 13, placed that in the Find field, copied another 1, font size 11, put that in the Replace field, and clicked 'go', or something similar. Work it did not. Also tried checking the 'case' box, still no. Does anyone know if this trick can even be done? If so, how? Thanx, Paul2

Answer:Find/Replace help,please

Welcome to MajorGeeks, WordPad is just basic don't know how much the formatting means to you, might be able to import it into something like free OpenOffice and then format it using Styles, Word is not an option? As suggested the Software Forum would be a better place for your question.

I recently did a change of the Computer Name (Control Panel - System - Computer Name - Change) shortly after setting up a new XP Pro machine, and am concerned over the fact that I still see many instances of the old name in the Registry.

I am now seeing where that may actually be posing a problem, too: Norton Anti-Virus is supposed to use the item in XP's Scheduled Tasks to scan drive C: once a week, but I noticed that since that name change it stopped working. When I look in the properties of the Scheduled Task, it has in the field for "Run as" the string [oldcomputername]\Administrator". When I try to change it to the new computer name, it lets me edit it but as soon as I hit OK or Apply it goes right back to the old entry! I've even tried deleting the Task and creating a brand new one using Norton's interface, yet it still comes up with the old computer name there!

I'm not really sure where that's being kept, but I assume it's in the Registry.

For this reason and as a general maintenance step, I want to go through the Registry and do a global Find-and-Replace to change all instances of the old computer name to the new one.

Is that even advisable in the first place and, if so, what utility would I want to use?

Thanks!

Is there a program available that will allow a person to find and replace entries in the registry.

Yes, I am aware of the issues regarding making changes in the registry. However, my external hard drive failed and I need to change all entries related to the external hard drive in order to reinstall many of the programs that were on it.

Microsoft will not install anything because G:/ drive is invalid. Adobe will not install for the same reason. Many of my other programs look for the G: drive and stop installing when it is not found.

Thank you. If this is the wrong forum, please move.

Hi all... I am working with a MS Word 2000 document that has a huge batch of numbers involved. The problem is that some of the numbers have run together... e.g.:

439 441 442 443 444445 449 450 452 454 458 459 460 461 462 463 464 468 470 472 473 474 477 479480

I can identify these errors just fine by searching for ^#^#^#^#^#... five digits in a row. Is there any way of doing a replace, using the same digits but with a space entered in after the first three? Right now I'm changing it by hand and have already spent nearly three hours engaged in this tedium. Any advice would be wonderful! Thanks.... Jim

Answer:Find & Replace question...

Are your 3 (or erroneous 6)digit numbers in seperate cells?
If so, you could do something like this:

I entered a list of 3 digit numbers and a few 6 digit numbers in cells A1 to A10. In B1, I entered:
=IF(A1>99999, LEFT(A1,3)&" "&RIGHT(A1,3),A1)
and then copied the formula down to B10.

In other words, if the value in the cell is a 6 digit number, show the 3 characters on the left, followed by a space, followed by the 3 characters on the right.

Alternatively, you could put the LEFT and RIGHT formula in adjacent cells, so that you only have 3 digit numbers in each resulting cell:

In B1, enter:
=LEFT(A1,3)

And in C1, enter:
=IF(A1>99999,RIGHT(A1,3),"")

You can then copy the resulting data and Paste Special > Values into another worksheet or workbook.

In Excel, how do I write a macro that would look for a string in an entire column. If the string is found, it will copy the value to the next column in that same file?
For example
In column A Have this adtr<JCNECHMCBDISA and I want to look just for the MC and “MC = MNDJ” if it found the MC in column replace with MNDJ (if it’s possible in the same row next column). Its not always MC or that size (it’s a mass scale search and replace). I have tried an if but didn’t work and then I try recording a macro but I need help because it replace 2 times because sometimes the replacements have the exact word that I’m also looking for.
Example

Selection.Replace What:="TIPOLEIJ", Replacement:="POL-222869;LIN33359;MC5875;DS23659", LookAt:=xlPart, _
SearchOrder:=xlByRows, MatchCase:=False, SearchFormat:=False, _
ReplaceFormat:=False
Selection.Replace What:="MC", Replacement:="MNDJ", LookAt:=xlPart, _
SearchOrder:=xlByRows, MatchCase:=False, SearchFormat:=False, _
ReplaceFormat:=False

When it search for the word “TIPOLEIJ” it replace with “POL-222869;LIN33359;MC5875;DS23659" but when it search for MC it change the “TIPOLEIJ” replacement to “POL-222869;LIN33359;MNDJ875;DS23659” Im wondering if there is something that after it replace the value “lock” the cell so its not replace again.
Hope someone can help.Thanks

Just cloned an ailing drive for a customer. The new drive works fine - no problem.

Just one small issue: My customer had originally bought his PC second-hand and he'd like to remove all traces of the previous owner's name from the new hard drive.

My question: Is there a registry app that makes a simple job of finding and replacing all registry instances of say, George, with Harold?

Obviously, I can do this manually, and have done in the past. But it was a tedious job. If such an app exists as I've described above, I'd like to know about it :--))

Thanks in anticipation....

PS - It would be helpful if you're able to suggest something that you KNOW works, rather than an app that you haven't personally tried. I say this because there are several progs such as 'New Owner' which purport to change the owner's name, but in actuality only change a few instances of the entry instead of ALL.

We have a TON of text based INI files for our companies software deployment scripts.

We also have a TON of people who use different ways to deploy the same software. On one server alone we can have a bunch of different ways people install E.G.

msiexec.exe /quiet /norestart /i \\dfs\dfsshare\SAV\Symant~1.msi
msiexec.exe /quiet /norestart /i <qt/>\\server\share\WIN32\Symantec Client Security.msi<qt/>
msiexec.exe /quiet /norestart /i \\server\share\SAV\WIN32\Symantec Client Security.msi
msiexec.exe /quiet /norestart /i <qt/>\\dfs\dfsshare\SAV\Symantec Client Security.msi<qt/>

and so on down the line.

I LIKE the abilities of Ecobyte Replace Text 2.2 but the problem is I have to type in the whole line as it is in the file to then replace it with the new one for the new deployment.

What I want to do is have a search based on PART of the line so I can then put in Symant~1.msi and Symantec Client Security.msi and replace the ENTIRE line with a new line.

Is there any multi file utility that allows you to search for part of a text line but replace the entire text line?

I have written a macro in MS Word that basically checks items off a list. It is based off of the seach and replace function, all it does is serach for a term and when it finds it changes it's color to blue and makes it strikethrough. I don't know if this is the most efficient way of doing it but this is the way I've come up with.

What I would like to add to it is the ability to have it tell me when the term is not found in the list, and possibly add it to the bottom of the list in a red color or something. Anyone know how I could do that?

Here is the macro code:
Sub CrossOff()

For x = 1 To 5 'Find and replace 5 times

SearchTerm = InputBox("Word to search")

Selection.Find.ClearFormatting
Selection.Find.Replacement.ClearFormatting

With Selection.Find
.Text = SearchTerm 'Word to search for
.Replacement.Text = SearchTerm 'Replace with same word, different formatting
End With

'Selection.Find.Replacement.ClearFormatting

With Selection.Find.Replacement
.Text = SearchTerm
.Font.Color = wdColorBlue 'change the text to blue
.Font.StrikeThrough = True 'cross it out
End With

Selection.Find.Execute Replace:=wdReplaceAll

Next x

End Sub
