I need to track a time in MS- Excel, If i lock my system (winkey+L, or ctrl+alt+del). Example: How many hours or minute system was locked.

Question: Excel Time Record

Need a hand. I've organised a charity world record attempt. 65 hour football match to raise money for a hospice.
I need an excel spreadsheet, which has a running timer, and room for players (36 of them), and so there is a button next to each player which will record the minute of a goal scored. This needs to be able to continue throughout the whole 65 hours.
If somebody could explain how to do this or create a template, it would be much appreciated.

Don't you hate it when you hit allow on the popup blocker and it reloads the page deleting your entry?

Anyway I think it is windows 2000 that it is running as I bought my pc from dell and did not buy the latest and best OS in 05 when I bought my desktop pc. It got a trojan or virus or something and nortan didn't catch it (free version). I downloaded pctools spyware dr in addition to nortan and I think that it caught the virus or some of it - for a day or so. This happened in like january 09. I unplugged the sob and left it in the closet.

My PC came out of the closet yesterday (have been using the wifes) and I fired it up. nothing seemed to work and the processes were slowing the computer to 40-50% with no programs running. Nothing would open. I put hijack this on a thumb drive and copied it to a folder on the desktop but have not been able to run the program yet. I followed the directions below in a desperate move to try to find my trojan:

Answer:Newbie fubars old computer in record time.

CPU usage spikes to 100% every 20 seconds with no visible programs running. ccevtmgr.exe and spbbcsvc.exe show up under proces during the spike as using the cpu. Access is denied to end these processes.

Well, I'm not very good at time management so I need a program that can lock me out of my computer for a specified amount of time, that way I don't get distracted and turn my computer on again. (Is there a way this is possible?) Please help!!!

this sounds like a horrible prank to play on a sibling/friend :/ but uhh im not sure thier is such a program, i mean it sounds very ..... dangerous potentialy if someone needed comp access sudenly for something ultimately etc on top of other issues.... you will need to go outside to do your homework etc perhaps... or find a way to keep your comp busy, maye if you used your comp for seti or dna or water or whatever they are doing with spare pc power while you do your work, pehraps play music from a net station while doing your homework as well from the pc that way its being used produtively and you get to focus on your work etc ?

Hello,

I am running genuine Windows XP, SP3.
My OS gets frequently locked, within 1 minutes of having no activity(mouse or keyboard).

I have checked the Sceensaver timer, but it is of no help.

I want to increase the computer lock timer as per my preference, but do not find this option anywehere.

Is there any registry setting or so, or if it has anything to do with group policy or anything.

I just keep unlocking my PC after no activity for 1 minute, makes it really difficult for me to read any article or e-book.

Please help.

I know this is probably an amatuer question but I am running XP professional and want to find out how to set it so that it will lock the pc after a set amount of time when the user has been away. I don't want it to log out, just lock the pc, like when you go to the switch user screen, only automatically... thanks in advance

HI, i have the same issue with tiny PC, any help appreciated. In fact what i would prefer is not tohave to do the reload, but it all keeps crashing on me, cant boot up even in safe mode. Got as far as defrag in safe mode then crashed and cant get anywhere near it now

I am not quite sure where to start...as it is not a hardware issue, so me mentioning the hardware would more than likely not make the difference.

A few weeks ago, after a security update came down from Windows update, my home setup mysteriously started password locking when the remaining idle for a period of time. I do not have any other user accounts on my computer, just the Administrator account that I normally use. This same thing happens on my networked office computers, even if you aren't an administrator.

I have made sure that my screensaver is off, and I have also even messed around the power options, making sure that it was not the "one wake-up ask for password option."

I am not quite sure what caused this function to turn on, perhaps it was the security update, perhaps it was not.

Does anybody now how to turn off this function?

Right click on your Desktop and click on Personalise. Click Screensaver in the new window. In the Screensaver window, uncheck "On resume display logon screen", click OK and the problem should be fixed!

Every time I press caps lock, to turn on or turn off, I can't keep typing until some process completes. The icon for capson/capsoff comes onscreen, and while it's there I can't keep typing, until some time passes. Very frustrating!

heck I've had the thing since 2007, too. But my VCR/DVD combo player bought the farm, so until we buy a new one- probably a new recordable DVD player, since the one I had doesn't seem to exist..
Anyway, I've set it up to record, followed the instructions, etc.

I would ASSUME the PC has to be ON for it to record, right? (I am saying this since a VCR isn't on when you set it to record, it comes on at the scheduled time.)

WMC doesn't have to be running @ the time of record, does it?

Do you set it to the specific channel you want, IE I want to record TVLand, which is "channel 72," or is it set to the default for cable TV setups, IE "channel 03."

And where in the PC does the recorded file live once done? IE, it will take up a lot of drive space I would think.

hi eknirb, your PC does need to be on to record, which i found out trying to record the X-files when i was away one week, the file lives in this directory> c:\users\public\recorded TV, windows media center doesn't need to be running all the time, a little red record icon will appear when it is recording and will happily do it in the background while taking up minimal resources, a very well done program i might say.

family guy episode recorded on my system takes up 660MB which is a lot, but you can set media center to allocate a certain amount of hard drive space.

As to channel recording, it will need to be set through the digital channels, you just go through the guide and set which program to record, i'll post a video of me doing a quick run down of how to record soon.

It reads this in the bottum right corner of my Sony Vegas projects and I have no idea what it is.

It even read this (sometimes with slightly different figures) when I open a new project and there is absolutely nothing in it.

If anyone knows what this may be, fill me in.

I need to help with developing a attendance record using Excel. I will track absences using letter codes placed in cells indicating the date of the occurence.

We use a point system to track an EE's absences. The system has a range of -2 to +3. A new employee starts out at 0 on the scale, for every 4 months of perfect attendance the EE receives 1 point, maxing out at +3 points.

If the EE misses a day 1 point is deducted for the occurence. If the employee missed more that one day but for the same reason only 1 point is deducted and counted as 1 occurence. The EE's work a 12 hour shift, if they are late and report no later than 6 hours in their shift, they are deducted 1/3 of an occurence, but if they report after 6 hours in their shift they are deducted 2/3's of occurence.

The same applies in the event the EE leaves early, if the EE leaves sometime from the start of the shift up to 6 hours, the EE receives 2/3's of an occurence. If the EE leaves early after 6 hours of work the are charged with 1/3 of an occurence.

Each occurence stays on the record for 4 months.

Example:

EE is at zero(0) on point system and he misses one day (1 occurence), the EE would move backwards from zero (0) to minus one (-1) on the scale.
EE was at zero (0) but instead he had a four month period without an occurence, then the EE would move forward from zero (0) to a plus on (+1) on the scale.

Use a very difficult password. We have plenty of password generators on majorgeeks.
Enable the system admin account and password protect it.
Those two are probably enough. How advanced is he?

Whenever I talked into the mic that the earphones have, I could hear my voice in the earphone. He has a Lenovo All in One Computer and Windows 10.

Any guides on how to do the same on my PC?

My earphones are these (WITH A MIC ATTACHED)

I know this is beginner level stuff, please be patient!
I want to create a Report that shows only one record for the purpose of writing a letter to a patient.
At the moment I seem to get lots of records showing (which is what a report is designed to do, I know) but it's not what I want.
I want to have a means to select a patient's last name, drawn from a Patient's table (may be I need to use a Select Query?) and have a report show this name in the manner you'd expect a business letter to be written.
I would then want to be able to add the text I want to say to that patient (may be using an unbound text box?) so that a letter can then be printed and mailed.
What steps do I take to design such a report?
I hope this is clear enough and, ultimately, I want to be able to have related data appear in this report which has been drawn from two other separate tables (i.e. Doctors table and Surgeries table).
I know I have to construct a query to do this but I need help with this too and with designing the database appropriately in the first place to help it all work!

I'm trying to record videos from my desktop, but I can't figure out how to record the sound coming from my computer and my voice at the same time. I can't get Stereo Mix to "playback" what I speak into my MIC, because my MIC uses a USB, rather than an audio port. The program also doesn't allow me to use both recording devices when I record.

Can anyone help me out? Thanks

I have a game capture software program which takes a video in-game and records the sound , but because I also have microphone inputs windows defaults to microphone for the audio. :rolleyes:

That means I don't get in-game sound. I've tried changing the recording setting in the volume settings but as soon as I record it defaults to microphone. Seems some sort of auto-detection is on. :suspiciou

How can I switch this off or correct the problem? Thanks for any help.

Try, Start, control panel (Classic view), sounds and audio devices, Audio tab, Sound recording section click Volume..., options, properties, select stereo mix, hit ok then select stereo mix.

i want to set up a homemade survalance system in my house using a webcam. what i want to do is record my webcam and stream it to another pc and my phone while its still recording.

so basicly when im out and about my webcam will be recording, but if i want to check it when im out id like it to be streaming to my phone live.

i know that you can stream to phones using orb. but you cant view it when its being recorded.

any ideas?

Is there a way to import a vcard's data into an existing spreadsheet?

I have an excel spreadsheet that we do estimating of jobs. Instead of retyping all info (ie: Name, Address, Cell, Work Phone, etc. etc.) We would like to be able to import a vcard record to an excel sheet.

I'm sure it could be code some way. you should see it as a text file, not all vcards will contain the same data because they may contain more data if it's filled.
And less if they are not filled.

Have you tried opening one in notepad?

This is what you see

Mind you it's possible that my system uses the ; as a field delimiter and yours a , so you'll have to do some checking

It's a aquestion of catching the right fields, since it's really a text file you could open it and write some code to go thourgh it and extract the fields yo need.

I am using Excel 97 with Vista Business. When I try to record a macro on a new worksheet I get the message "Unable to Record Macro". If, on the other hand, I load a file created in Excel 97 while I was using Windows XP, I can not only run the existing macros but record new ones.

Would I be correct in assuming that Excel 97 is not fully compatible with Vista or does someone have a solution?

Can you tell me why my latest PC build takes forever to boot into Windows please ?The first POST screen gets to " Auto-Detecting Primary Master...Press F4> to abort_ and then pauses with the flashing DOS cursor for 20 seconds before finding the HDD and moving on.As if this isn't irritating enough,the real pain in the butt is that it then displays the Windows xp screen with the little moving blue line for an incredible 1 minute and 50 seconds before loading the Windows welcome screen !I have enabled quick boot and tried setting the boot priority in different orders.Also tried swapping the HDD & DVDRW between IDEs 1 & 2 on the motherboard.Formatted and reinstalled Windows XP aswell.I have never known such an incredibly ageing boot !Can this be resolved please ?Asrock K7S41 Integrated VGA & SNDDuron 1.4GHZ1024MB Ram80GB Maxtor HDD300watt PSUWindows XP Pro

You must have got the Hard drive set to AUTO in the BIOS, this slows boot as it as to chech the drive settings each time you boot, you should auto detect the drive. Have loaded many programs?

I have an Athlon 650, 512 MB PC running Windows 2000 server edition running Internet Connection Sharing (for cable modem), and IIS 5.0 for several web sites. I also use it as a file server. I usually leave it just sitting there and just update things every once in a while. I don't even have a monitor hooked to it. Should I hit CTRL-ALT-DEL and click the "lock computer" or log out? Would this make it more secure somehow to hacks? I haven't had any problems yet, but I just want it secure as possible.

I am building a excel spreadsheet to be used as a database where I have multiple tabs that each contain the same basic information but each tab contains unique information, too. I have built a user form to add data to the first empty row on each tab then sort the data, but I cannot figure out how to edit or delete the data. Hello, I am hoping that you can help me with an excel problem. I have a large list of clients who completed tests of various days and each client?s name appears several times on the list based on them completing a test on a given day. For example, (in Sheet1) John Doe appears in column A, 25 times based on the dates he completes a tests. The date that he completed the test is in column B and, the amount he is charged in Column C, the date he paid for the test in column D and the amount he paid on that date in column E. I have included an example below. What I would like to do is to automatically create a record for each client in Sheet2, where the name of each client would appear only one time. So, each time a new client who completes a test is entered into Sheet1, their name would appear is column A (only one time), of Sheet2 and then I could do some formulas to keep a running balance for each client. Hi there. I hope somebody can advise. I am using an Excel spreadsheet to record client information at work. It would be most helpful to me if I could format all the cells in a particular column to automatically insert the date when I insert data in the row, but doesn't then insert a new date if I were to open and browse the file on a different day (if you see what I mean). I've tried using =today() which helpfully inserts today's date whenever I open the template. Unfortunately when I open the file days later to check the details in the record, the date field updates to the current date (i.e. the date on which it is being viewed, not the date the file was created).

To try to clarify...I have a single worksheet on which I record client data throughout the year. I, say, put Name in Column A, Location in column B, Gender in column C, and the date they were inroduced to the service in column D. It would be nice if, whenever I enter the usual data in columns A, B and C it would automatically insert the current date in column D and that information would still be there if I open the spreadsheet weeks later. Re-reading this I am feeling this is probably too complex for there to be an easy answer, but just thought I'd ask in case anybody has done this before.

Hello Every One,

I am a basic excel user. I am trying to create an excel record keeper that will keep a record of employee duty hours, dates and types of duty all inserted in the first sheet, may be from a drop down list. Employee name can also be selected from a drop down list. It may be a 3 man shift or a 2 man shift. I want excell to create a new sheet each time a new employee is selected and add his/her hours with dates and other information to that sheet. All data for the same shift will be copied to the record of all three employees.

I have a new Dell laptop with Windows ME & Office XP. When I go to record a new macro, I can enter the description and other info, but when I click 'OK' to start recording the Macro, I get an "Unable to record" error message. The error message has no help button or details button, just an 'OK' button. I have everything for Office installed.....Please help, thanks

I need help writing a formula to subtract the end time of an event from the start time of the event. Can anyone help?

I've been asked to look at an excel file at work and they want a button that when clicked will put a new row at the bottom of the current records (i.e. the next empty row) and autopopulates the first cell in the row with a unique number (preferably sequential) so this can be used as an identifier for that particular record.

I am using DoCmd.TransferSpreadsheet to export results of a query into Excel. What I am trying to do is add a blank record after the last exported record and export results of a second query after the blank line.

Does anyone know of a VB command to add a blank record to the exported file and then export a second query directly after the blank record?

Answer:Adding a blank record between exported queries in Excel.

Just try and run the second query and output to the same file name. It should create another worksheet in the same file. I know this probably isn't what you are looking for.

I am working on a sales commission spreadsheet and am looking for a way to enter a record of a customer/sale on a line on 1 sheet (ex: May sales) and upon a trigger (entering a value in a cell when the job is closed) have the customer record (or better yet selected cells or fields from the record) copied to a line on a second sheet (ex: May closed jobs) where commissions would be calculated based in part on the date the job was closed. There are incremental commissions paid depending on the cumulative sales closed in the month so the copied records would need to populate the second sheet in chronological order upon being "triggered". Hope this makes sense, any ideas? Of course i could manually copy them at the correct time but would like something where the closed date is entered ahead of time with the original record on sheet 1 and upon entering a trigger (confirming the job is in fact closed) it auto populates sheet 2.

Since my company has upgraded to Windows 7 I now have a problem recording Macros in Excel. I find that the commands SAVE and SAVE AS do not record any more.
Also when stepping through (F8) a macro, when it gets to a SAVE command it just runs to the end unless I put a Breakpoint after that command. Any ideas??

I have an Excel cell (general format) with the number 7.40 in it. It's supposed to mean 7 hours, 40 minutes. I need to multiply what 7.40 really means (7.67 hours) by a rate for another cell total. How do I convert the 7.40 to 7.67? (I realize I could just change the 7.40 to 7.67, but I'm being simplistic - there are thousands of cells with the data entered this awful hh.mm way.)

I had my laptop hard drive replaced and part of the agreement included the installation of MS Office Professional. When I went to pick-up the laptop I asked for the MS Office product Key Codes for my records and registration. The store owner said he had already registered the software and it was set to go, just bring it back if I ever needed to reinstall for any reason. I was suspicious as a legal installation would include this information.

When I got the laptop home and started it up, I checked to see the licensing information on MS Office Professional and it was registered to IUWare (University of Indiana), I have reported this to their ITC Support and other security and policy departments. My research has indicated that it is possible to record audio directly from my PC to my iRiver H320 mp3 digital jukebox, in real time, using the supplied line-in cable. I figured I would just have to connect the headphone jack of my PC to the line-in jack on my iRiver and press Record. I tried that, but when I listened through my earphones afterward all I heard was noise picked up by the unit's internal microphone. Perhaps my connection was wrong.

Unfortunately, I have spent all day trying to figure out the proper connections and sequence of steps. In fact, after two failed attempts I unplugged the iRiver from my PC only to learn that none of my media players would play at all! After the first one, I did a System Restore to regain their use. The second time it happened I simply rebooted to get back the normal use of my media players, so I guess System Restore wasn't really necessary the first time.

I've gone to forums and been to the iRiver website for help, but still haven't figured out how to connect to and record directly from my PC. (I love the versatility of the H320, but I find it a bit complicated to use.)

I would greatly appreciate hearing from anyone who can tell me how to properly set up and record. Could it be that I need to change some settings on my jukebox?

I had exactly the same problem with my iHP 120 while trying to record from my minidisc player to my iRiver. My first attempt was the same as yours - I ended up with almost two hours of what I sound like when I'm working on my computer (I sniff far too much!).

Here's the solution: Once you've turned on your iRiver and pushed the Record button and have the Standby screen on, push the A-B button on the side and you'll get a screen that says "Record Setting". First on the list will be "Source". Use the scroll button (>>) to change from Internal Mic to Line In. Once you have done that, click the scroll button once to get back to Standby mode and you should be ready to record for real this time.

Now for the part where it got worse for me. Once you have those recordings, how do you find them in Windows (XP in my case)? I can find them on the iRiver screen by going to the ROOT menu and then to RECORD. When I plug my iRiver into my laptop and click on it, I get all of my music files listed in Windows but can't get into the ROOT or RECORD files. Anyone know how I can do this? I'd like to be able to delete the rather large file of background noise and transfer the recordings of actual music into my music files.

Hey everyone , I am trying to record from am external audio source (a nice uhf mic system I got, and added a 3.5mil output from). Anyways, on both my T60p and X200, with updated drivers installed running windows 7 the internal mic and line in are listed as the same, and both of them record, as well as making it impossible to listen to the line it because the internal mic makes feedback. How on earth do I get these to be listed as seperate devices? I have Linux installed on this too maybe I will just have to find a program to do it on that :/

Hi,

I am having trouble making a spreadsheet to record points and prizes awarded for playing different types of games.

Each game awards a set amount of points for playing, plus a prize depending on the finishing position of the player.
I think I need to use Vlookup but I'm confused as to how to set it up.

I would like for my Access 2007 database to automatically record the date/time when the data in a SPECIFIC field is modified (not when any data in the record changes).

Here is a simplified explanation of my scenario. This database keeps track of cases in my office. A data entry form named "Cases" feeds a table named "Cases." The form includes text boxes that correspond to the fields in the table. Three of these are: "Case_Notes," "Case_Status," and "Date_Status_Change."

I would like for the "Date_Status_Change" field to automatically reflect the current date/time whenever the data in the "Case_Status" field changes. I do not want the date/time to change when information in the "Case_Notes" field is modified.

What code would accomplish this?

The following code will enter the date/time for a change anywhere in the record:

I have a problem with the time sheet I created in excel for recording downtime. I am using the custom: h:mm AM/PM for start time / end time and then using h:mm for total time. The formula is a very basic =sum(c2-b2) This works well until I have a start time before midnight and an end time after midnight. Any help with this would greatly be appreciated. Thanks in advance

There are 3 different locations. Each site, has it's own 2K small biz server running.

They have no group policies in effect as well.

Where would you begin, or what would be the easiest solution, all the while providing some scaleability?

My hp envy 112 started up in safe mode. The start up screen states wrong password. If I type my pw 5 times the screen wi say welcome then kicks me out and displays wrong password. Question: Excel Lock Out

When I start Excel (97) it appears in the task bar,
but it won't display. It's not hung up, as I can use the
keyboard menu commands (i.e. ALT-F, displays the File
command menu). I can see the command menus, but cannot

Is there any way to keep the lock screen from shutting me down if I don't do anything on the keyboard for a minute or 2 minutes, or whatever it is? I followed some instructions that I found on the internet that involve adding ".bak" or ".backup" to the lock screen file in "SystemApps" but it didn't have any effect. Then I clicked on "Settings" in the Start menu and got totally lost in all that stuff.

You can change the time format, how time is shown on Windows notification area freely but AM / PM is regardless of your settings never shown in Windows Clock and lock screen if 24 hour clock has been selected.

To change how time is shown on Windows desktop, select Control Panel > All Control Panel Items > Region, click Additional settings:



Now change time formats manually typing any of the following values for short time. Add :ss for long time for seconds:

My PC suddernly locks up when booting. It does the RAM check, finds the hard disks, but don't think it can find the boot record from hard disk. It can boot from boot floppy and can and read the hard drives when in DOS. (I got 2 drives dual booting with 'C' as Win98 and 'D' as Win xp)It tries to search for boot record from A then CD drive then C, screen goes black with small flashing cursor top left and hangs there.Is there a way I can repair without rebuilding?Is it the boot record as I assume?I got second machine to download any fix files if suggested.Help appreciated

Windows 8 keeps locking the screen, seems maybe 1 minute after not touching it. I would like to set that to something like 20 minutes, but I can't see where to do that?

Hello, I used to use a reg file for Windows 8.1 to customize the time until the screen turns off during the Lock Screen Time Out. I want to know if that command still applies for Windows 10.

The reg file command is:
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Lock Screen]
"SlideshowDuration"=dword:000493e0
(where the screen turns off after 5 minutes).

I have the formula to figure out what you need to calculate to insert after "dword" for the amount of time until the screen times out (goes black). Ask me for the formula... as long as the above works.

Hi there,

Since I got my current PC I've had an issue where it would occassionally completely lock-up, i.e. completely still image on screen, mouse wouldn't move, and it also put out a buzzing sound through the speakers/headphones. The only option was to force shutdown and start it up again. But it didn't happen that often so I wasn't bothered by it much.

However since updating to Windows 8 it is now happening about 15 minutes into use every time I turn the PC on (but after rebooting doesn't happen again until the next time I turn it on), so I'm looking for a solution now.

Has anyone seen something like this, or got any advise?

WOW!! Exactly what I'm seeing!!!

Usually occurs within 15 minutes of booting. Once a day only. I've had the computer off over 8 hours one day and when turned on it didn't happen... only the FIRST boot of the day. Works fine on any reboots after?

I have gotten random different BSOD's too.

I've also had days at a time when this didn't happen? I did nothing at all to change anything either. Then it starts happening again?

Things I have tried though:

Removed ANY unnecessary programs I had. This computer started with Vista, upgraded to W7, then W8 (when it started happening) and now W8.1, so I did collect a lot of 'junk'.
Stopped AutoStarting anything I didn't really need or could manually start later.
Changed Video card as old ATI was not suppo... Read more

Hi,

I looking for a way to limit time on the PC - auto lock Windows after 30 minutes, even (and especially) when the computer is not idle.
When the user will log back into Windows by entering the Windows password, the counter will start again from 30 minutes.

The app should start automatically and silent with Windows, and the user should not be able to stop this app without a password.

Anyone else seeing this issue? If I put my tablet into standby when I wake it I don't get the lock screen and it just goes straight to the start screen or whatever app I was using. If I put it into standby again then I'll get the lock screen the next time I wake it but then the next time it won't appear again. I've checked and it's literally every other time.

I have a similar problem with Outlook 365, but it only happens when I try to respond or create an email. Most times I just have to close outlook and restart it and do not do anything except to create that email otherwise it will freeze up again, and become non-responsive.Any suggestions?I have done the uninstall and reinstall a couple of times, actually had Office 365 tech do it remotely, it works for a day or 2 and then starts acting up again.message edited by gbkane40

Hi, thanks in advance for any advice...I have seen lots of threads regarding this on a PC, but not for a Mac. I am using Mac OS X version 10.5.8 running Excel 2008 version 12.2.3.

The scroll lock is stuck on, yet there is not a scroll lock key to disengage it. (This causes the spreadsheet to shift while the cell doesn't change.) I have tried rebooting, unplugging the keyboard and mouse, and various combinations of shift/control/option/apple with caps lock, num lock and F keys to no avail. Just under the horizontal scroll bar, and next to the Caps and Num lock indicators, "SCRL" is illuminated. There is a scroll lock indicator on my keyboard which is not illuminated.

I frequently am logging in and out of my Windows 8.1 laptop. I have a good, secure password that I use and because I'm human, sometimes I mistype it. The issue is that on these occasions, I am locked out for a good 30 seconds from attempting to
login, even for the second time.

I can understand the time delay if it were say, my 5th or 6th attempt, but for one attempt this is entirely too long. How do I go about significantly reducing this, or ideally removing it?

I like having my monitor power off soon after activity stops. Currently, I have it powering off after 2 minutes of inactivity. I am also very big on locking my PC when I step away. So, I also have the screen saver kick in after 2 minutes. (Of course, I never even see a screen saver because the monitor is off. And, in fact, my screen saver is set to "None". So this setting essentially means the PC is set to lock after 2 minutes.)

However, what often happens is that I'm sitting at the PC, and the monitor turns off, but I don't want it to lock. I move the mouse, and it's locked--even if I intervened within a second or two.

With Windows XP, I used to be able to use the ScreenSaverGracePeriod registry value to work around this. I've tried this with my Windows 8 system, but it doesn't work. I have tried using ScreenSaverGracePeriod as both REG_SZ and as DWORD.

Is there any way to delay the PC from locking after the monitor powers off by just a few seconds? I know I can have the monitor power off after 2 minutes but set the screen saver to 3 minutes, but I'd like to reduce the delay to a matter of seconds, if that is possible.

I suppose one way would be to disable screen saver password protection to prevent it from basically locking the PC and asking for a password when you resume from screen saver.

The only drawback is that you would then need to lock the PC when you do want it to be password protected when unlocking. If you like, the desktop context menu added by either tutorial below can help make it easier to lock the PC.

To begin with i would like to congratulate the admin team for maintaining such an awesome forum. I never felt the need to register because most of my seraches landed to this site for solution except for this one, so here i am with my problem.
 
I have 2 week old HP pavalion notebook pc with pre-installed Windows 8.1 64bit single language. Untill few days back, when i presses windows+L the lock screen would pop up immediately. But now whenever i do it, it takes time to lock.
 
I clocked it and it took approx 30-35 sec to lock. I am not sure what might be the problem or if this is  al all normal behaviour. Have to look at 'Please wait' screen for 30 sec to get lock screen image.

Basically, I have some people that would jump at the chance to hop onto an Administrator's account due to the restrictions they have. That being said, even if I leave my notebook alone for 5 minutes, I want the darn thing locked.

Just due to the fact I personally like a couple of the new Vista screensavers, is there a way to both lock and immediately start the screensaver?

Not sure why the screensaver would play into it, but whatever.

Set the screensaver to require a password on resume (even if the screensaver doesn't kick in automagically this is the proper setting), and press Windows+L anytime to lock the workstation immediately.

New T530 with SSD takes minutes to boot to useable state:Desktop comes up fast, but continuous hard drive activity for two minutes on bootup, and screen is locked up (can't start anything).Every so often while I'm in a program the pointer goes into the rotating circle mode, also, so it appears something is popping in there. Any thoughts on why this is happening and what I can do to get the same fast boot time as my T500 with an SSD?I've gotten the most recent updates from Lenovo and Microsoft (including latest BIOS update, which didn't help).Ran MalwareBytes and CCleaner, which don't show anything bad. Very disappointed so far.

When it hangs while you are running, hit ctrl-alt-delete and choose task manager to see what is using CPU time. Are you using something like a domain controller for authentication? If so, is it always available? Often, this kind of problem occurs when searching for network shares

Please help me. I am running the latest Internet Download Manager and have scanned my PC for rootkits, malware and viruses with many different sources and found 0 infections.

I am getting this exact error.........
