Preferred Solution: how to solve error 1706 ?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I have been running WindowsXP/Microsoft Office 2002 for nearly twenty months without problem.

Today, when opening individual files in Word/Excel format, the following dialogue boxes are displayed: "Preparing to install" is first displayed, followed by "Please wait whilst Windows configures Microsoft Office XP Professional" with an incremental loading bar L to R followed by "The feature you are trying to use is on a CD-Rom which is not available. Install the Microsoft Office XP Professional Disc and click OK". The latter box offers OK/Cancel/Browse. When I click Cancel (because the subject programs are already loaded onto my computer and have been running successfully for twenty months)
I get "Error 1706. Set-up cannot find the required files. Check your connection to the nextwork or CD-Rom Drive. For other potential solutions to this problem see c:\Program Files\etc etc" When I click OK on this latest box the "Please wait whilst Windows configures Microsoft Office XP Professional" reappears and the bar unloads from R to L.

When I attempt to reopen the file in question it often opens normally.

However I feel that this problem could represent an underlying corruption which could develop.

It is essential that I do not lose my existing files.

A minor problem which may or may not be associated with this problem (it developed some time before) is that some of my files have temporary ghost files designated by~$lastletters of fil... Read more

Answer:Error 1706 set up error has developed, despite system previously running smoothly

I recently read that there is a MS service pack that causes this to happen. If you have recently applied any patches, one of them may be causing your problem. Go to the MS website and search the knowledgebase. I hope this helps.

Question: error 1706

Hi,
Recently I downloaded a registry cleaner from Comodo and ever since I have had error 1706 window popping up when I want to open either " My documents" or, " Control panel" or even when inserting a USB. I went on google and downloaded a freeware for supposedly fixing the problem then they are asking for money. I am a pensioner and cannot afford $29.95.
Can anyone help me ? How can I fix it? I have a Toshiba laptop with Vista Home Premium.
Thanks
Guy

Answer:error 1706

Hi, and welcome to the forums, by now you probably have realised that the program that was going to speed up your computer and make it feel like new again, HAS, in fact stuffed it.

This is one of the main reasons we do not recommend you use reg cleaners, they simple are not needed and as you have experienced can and do create problems. Now tell me you didn't just rush in and did follow their suggestion:-

Comodo Registry Cleaner displays results by category to help you decide if an entry should be removed or not. As a safeguard, a reminder lets users create a restore point before removing anything.

If you did, use the restore point.

Question: Error 1706

I recently tried to install a media card reader, ArcSoft Media Card Companion.
Now, I can't launch Outlook (haven't tried other MS Office Apps yet)-the setup prog runs and tells me to insert the setup disk, which I cancel-then I get an error message 1706 "Outlook not installed for this user".

Also, when I launch Registry Mechanic, same thing. Outlook setup runs, etc etc. Why would the setup for a Microsoft product run when I try to load a third party app?

BTW-this kind of BS started happening long ago (for those of you who remember, I had all kinds of probs with this machine) but I was never able to isolate it to one thing, since so many others were f'd up.........now, however, this machine has been performing flawlessly. I have installed all progs one at a time, until I got stupid tonight, and installed one without backing up first.....
Anyhow, I'm sure that the Media Card software is the culprit; as I said, it did this before. Now, I'm just not sure how to get it cleaned up right.

I uninstalled the offending prog, and tried to repair my registry to no avail. I don't want to force an install of Outlook, which is what I'm afraid of doing if I just stick the disk in there.

Oh well, at least Firefox is still working, so I can get on here and get help!

Thanks as always, geeks

Question: error 1706

Hello, I am very new at trying to fix my pc.....and this forum...
I uninstalled hp 1400 all in one series, and installed a Lexmark. Now every time I turn pc on a box comes up saying windows installer is trying to install aio software, I cancel but it does not go away, error 1706 comes up, I cant even shut my pc down because of it. Is there a simple way to get rid of this.

Answer:error 1706

DMBUD7 error 1706.
I had the same problem. You will have to go to the control panel and select the administrative tools icon (classic View) and then select services and applications to select and then stop windows installer. This will allow you to work on solving the problem of bad software. HP is notorious for causing this problem. uninstall the HP printer properly (again) and reinstall the Lexmark printer properly (again). Others will probably object to this, but I would search for any uninstalled vestige HP software and delete any that I found by just deleting it from the hard drive. If all of this fails, call HP's 800 support number.
After you get the problem fixed, reverse the process to restart windows installer.

Question: Error 1706

Hi All,

Am new to this site and posted this message on another thread but have been advised to start a fresh one as my query doesn't really relate to the original poster - sorry!!

Anyway....

Hoping that someone can help me resolve the Error 1706 message I'm getting. I think the children have tried to do something with the PC (all are pre-teen and think they know everything about computers... until it goes wrong!!!) and now every time we boot the PC we get an error message:

"Error 1706 no valid source could be found for product Fax. The windows installer cannot continue".

Any help would be great. We don't have a fax so can only assume the children have "clicked" in error! I'm not the best "techie" around so any explanation rather than a link would be useful.

Thanks (again!).

I did look around on internet but i'm not sure if it came from this programm but it's possible that it came for this program i also tried windows fix it but it seems not to work for me.

Can anyone help me?

Answer:Error 1706

That file is a non-critical (non-core) part of the Windows software and is associated with the Update Manager.

Apparently it can be removed by various agents - to obtain a copy get it here -> http://www.public.asu.edu/~hberaldi/files/ISUS.msi and save it to the location C:\Program Files\Common Files\InstallShield.

Reboot.

That should fix the issue.

Installed Roxio Creator Suite 10. Answer:error 1500 when removing roxio error 1706

Roxio software is the buggiest software I have EVER come across !If you merely search this XP forum with Roxio you get MANY "hits"http://www.computing.net/cgi-bin/AT...A friend of mine insisted on using Roxio Easy Media Creator on her systems starting with version 7.0 and their software has caused her / me all sorts of grief !You could try this then re-installing it, but it didn't help for me with Roxio EMC 10.Complete Uninstall of Creator 9 & 10 on Windows XPhttp://kb.roxio.com/search.aspx?URL.......... In my latest case a message popped up saying there were updates available for EMC 10, do I want to install them? or similar . I clicked on NO or Remind me later or similar and the damn thing installed the software anyway !! , BEFORE I had a chance to disable my anti-virus software from running ! Whether it was interference from the anti-malware software that caused it or bugs in Roxio's software, installing the updates trashed EMC 10 and I could not fix the problems !Even after doing the above procedure the original EMC 10 software would NOT install.I searched using Roxio and similar in the registry, and there were STILL hundreds of entries there !

On computer restarts, Windows Installer prepares to install PhotoGallery.
A PhotoGallery dialog box then states: "the feature you are trying to use is on a cd rom or other removable disk that is not available" "insert the PhotoGallery disk and click "ok". It also indicates 'source 1'. (I have never had this disk that it is looking for). I have browsed for PhotoGallery.msi and it is not on my computer. When I cancel this installation attempt I get " ERROR 1706. No valid source for product Photogallery. Windows installer cannot continue"
I also am unable to install the Windows Installer Cleanup utility. I begin the download and the site then directs me to uninstall the program. When I choose to continue vs cancel, it sends me right back to uninstall again (round and round we go).
Do you think this is related to Hewlett Packard all in one printer software? I do not know whose program/software 'Photogallery' belongs to. Advice is greatly appreciated.

Hi everybody.
I'm experiencing the following trouble.
Windows update asks me to download the update to Office SP3, but when I try I receive the following messages:

1. Please wait while Windows configures Microsoft XP Professional With Front Page.

2. Error 1706. Setup cannot find the required files. Check your connection to the network or CD ROM drive. For other potential solutions to this problem see C:/ProgramFiles/MicrosoftOffice/Office10/1033/SETUP.HLP.

If I try to browse to locate the missing file, the window reveals it is searching for "PROPLUS.MSI".

The same happens when I try to open Excel, although I discovered that I can open excel by clicking directly on the program icon (found this way: search: excel) and not on the link. Actually the same procedure reported before (asking for PROPLUS) starts, but when I say "no" to all the prompts then excel opens properly.

I have searched a long though the Internet, as it appears that many users shared the same problem, without finding any resolving answers.

Also note: I was helped in this forum to solve a rootkit problem a few days ago (by Chemist, here). Toward the end of the procedure I checked excel, and it was running properly. Then the malfunctioning reappeared.

Anyone can solve the problem?

Please note: I don't have the original CDs (but I understood from other users it is not a sure solution)

My System: Windows Professional XP 2002 SP3

Thanks in advance for your help.

Answer:PROPLUS.msi Error 1706

It needs that file from the CD to install or repair missing or corrupted files. You can borrow someones disk for this, or even to do a complete uninstall/re-install; just be sure you have your product key. You can get it off of the system using any of these system info tools:

System Info Tools
SIW - System Information for Windows

I recently had a little problem with a Dell Pc . Upon booting up, it would open a window that said please wait while Windows configures Photo Gallery. Then asked for a photo gallery disk, choices in the window were browse,Ok and Cancel. Finally after putting up with the annoyance ,I decided to research the problem. I went into the task manager and highlighted photo gallery and clicked end task, then rebooted. Same thing again, but the only photo gallery software I used was from HP image zone for my printer. I inserted that disk and clicked ok and that cured the problem.
Upon installation in the Pc, I had used the installation wizzard cause it was faster, but it was selective and did not get the full install. It would have been simple if windows would have told me to put in the HP disk.

Question: Solved: Error 1706

Ok, you'll have to forgive me in advance because I am totally computer retarded. A couple of days ago for whatever reason whenever I try to save a Word (2003) document or when I open or try to send a new e-mail in Outlook (2003) I get the following installer:

Title: Microsoft Office XP Professional with Frontpage
Please wait while Windows configures Microsoft Office XP Professional with Frontpage.

After it attempts to install or configure it pops up with this message:

Error: 1706 Setup cannot find the required files. Check your connection to the network or CD-Rom drive. For other potential solutions to this problem see:
C:/program files/microsoft office/office 10/1033/setup.HLP

Not sure why it started up all of a sudden. I don't have any new updates. Can someone please help me! Keep in mind I'm not to good with computers, so please make sure I could understand what you are talking about.

Thanks in advance!

Answer:Solved: Error 1706

Hi and welcome to TSG

Try a System Restore to an earlier date.

Start > All programs > Accessories > System Tools > System Restore
Select a date just prior to your problem starting.
Your data ( word files, photos etc. ) will be OK you will need to reinstall any software or critical updates installed since the chosen date.

Hey, guys,

I've been visiting my grandmother while she's been sick, and she wanted me to take a look at her computer for her. An "Error 1706. No valid source could be found for product DocumentViewer. The Windows Installer cannot continue." message keeps popping up.

I'm not exactly sure the conditions prior to this problem, but there are one or two other grandkids that are up here all the time using her computer, so they might have messed up an installation or something. Anyway, here's my HJT log:

Question: Error Code 1706

Can't say specifically what happened that caused this issue to occur. A window keeps popping up that says Error code 1706 No valid source could be found for InstantShare. Windows Installer can not continue. I have tried to download from support.microsoft.com/kb/290301, but that gives me an error 1500 that something else is trying to install and it can't work. When the window pops up, I hit cancel and it comes right back saying windows is configuring InstantShare, then it asks for a disc. I hit cancel and get the error code 1706. Then we repeat it all over again. Any ideas? I don't know what information is needed to correct this issue. I am running windows xp home edition version 2002. Its an Hp Pavilion a404x.
thanks

Answer:Error Code 1706

put in your HP printer disk and finish the install. you may need to click on browse and find the correct .msi.

alternatively, download the latest full software package from HP and extract. point to extracted folder to finish install.

alternatively also, uninstall your HP printer software and reinstall it.

This may be a bit long but to accurately state my problem, I need to start at the beginning. My OS is Vista 64 bit and everything was working fine until I installed Norton's Antivirus 2011 on Friday night. First problem was that some of the updates would not install so the instructions for that told me to use Norton's removal tool and then reinstall NAV2011 following the instructions. I did this and finally the updates worked. Then I tried to use Norton's PC Checkup. I had to download a file to run the tool. The file would never download all the way and would hang at 99%. I used the removal tool, removed NAV2011 again and then the file completed its download. I ran the tool and found a couple trojans and NAV2011 had found a few also. These were removed. I ran Panda Scan 2.0 I believe it is and Windows Live OneCare which found different trojans. NAV2011 was not installed while I was running the other programs. Only a few files had these trojans in them, none were in the registry or memory. My son had downloaded the files and I deleted them. I reinstalled NAV2011. I tried to download ITunes 10 and could not download it either. It would hang at 99% too and not download. I decided not to keep NAV2011 on my PC so once again removed it using the Norton's Removal Tool. At this time I am without virus protection as my year's free protection that I got with my new PC was over with. I decided to download what was free from my service provider. It is CA Security Cent... Read more

Question: Windows Error 1706

Hey guys and girls,

Having a little problem here. I ran my antivirus and now everytime I go to open IE, Windows Installer pops up asking for the Microsoft Office XP Professional with FrontPage Disk.

It's looking for Proplus.

Now the problem! A little computer friend of mine put Windows and Office XP in my computer and didnt make me a copy of the cd and now he lives in DC.

Does anyone know how I can stop this window from popping up? or find the file on the web? It's obviously not being used because IE opens and works find. Its just everytime I open IE, AIM, etc. this darn thing pops up.

Any simple solutions? I tried installing the IE SP2 again thinking it was that, but no luck.

Thanks,
Blinnk

Answer:Windows Error 1706

Have you tried reinstalling just IE, not 'service pack2', which I assume you meant. You can download it from the MS site.

Other option is to Google the file you need, but likely it does not tell you.

Other option is to ask your friend for the CD!

Hello,

I keep getting the following installation attempt/error code.

I have no idea what Destinations is, never had a prog by that name. I've been googling my tail off looking for a solution with no luck.

This appears mostly when I reboot, but occasionally when shutting down other programs. There's no consistency in what actions trigger it so I haven't been able to find any common denominators.

I went to get the MSI cleanup tool, but according to MS it only deals with several different versions of Office. I haven't uninstalled office so that shouldn't be causing the problem.

Recently I did go through and uninstall quite a few old progs and games that have been on my PC forever in an attempt to reclaim some hd space, but I can't remember what all they were for the life of me.

I've cleaned my registry along with the rest of my system using a couple of different maintenance progs.

My system is running great except for this annoyance.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I'm running XP w/SP3

Answer:[SOLVED] Error 1706

When this happens, Go to Start/Run and type devmgmt.msc and press enter. In the Device Manager, is there any hardware device with a yellow mark? If so, this would be what it is trying to install. If Hardware isn't the problem then run the Windows Installer Cleanup Utilitiy. This was created to cleanup Office Installations, but also works on other programs installed by the Windows Installer.

Hi all:

I wanted to install dial-up People PC on my son's HP - he's running XP-

He had Netzero- and was having connection problems, although it worked 85% of the time.

I deleted all Netzero program components first, then tried to install dial-up PEOPLE PC with their free disc.

It starts to install ,gets about 32% then a message says
ERROR 1706 - cannot find source code for BartShel or cannot find source code for "hpapp-----" something or other.

Each time it says to try to find the app in another location and try to open from there- but the same error code comes up.

Can you help me? Should I NOT have deleted Netzero first?

Thanks in advance.

Answer:Error 1706 source code

http://www.topbits.com/error-1706.html

I would go to people pcs website and see if they have a downloadable version which could be burned to cd or saved to a flash drive. Then try to install it.

I don't think it had to do with deleting Netzero unless a shared dll file was deleted. Usually the system warns you before allowing you to delete dll files.

Answer:windows installer error 1706

Windows Installer error messages are not uncommon. Please download, install and use the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility - (it will list all programs that use Windows Installer).Double-click on msicuu2.exe and click "Next".Accept the license agreement, click "Next", then click "Next" again.Click "Finish" when done.Go to Start > Programs and click on Windows Install CleanUp to launch the program. In the list of Install Products, check to see if the program for which you are getting the Windows Installation pop up is present. If so, highlight that entry, then click on the "Remove" button. Then reinstall the program if you still want to use it again.-- The Remove button does not remove the program. It removes the install configuration.-- If you plan to reinstall the program, you should reinstall the program in the same folder where you originally installed it.If that does not work, there are more suggestions in How to resolve Common "Windows Installer" Problems.

Whenever I try to start up MS Excel, whether it be through the start menu or by opening an existing workbook, a dialogue box flashes up labelled Windows Installer. It then starts trying to install Excel as if it were not already on the system. It asks for the MS Office installation disk (which I don't have) and then when I click cancel it comes up with an error dialogue box:

"Error 1706. Setup cannot find the required files. Check your connection to the network, or CD-ROM drive. For other potential solutions to this problem, see F:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office 10\1033\SETUP>HLP."

It then shuts down.

I googled this error and came up with a microsoft support page (http://support.microsoft.com/?scid=kb;en-us;811587) suggesting links with a "W32/Insane.dam" virus. I searched for excel.exe.vir on my hard drives and couldn't find it but I did find EXCEL.EXE in F:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office 10, to which I have now placed a shortcut on my desktop. If I run this file, Excel opens up with the dialogue boxes described above in front of it, and after I click "cancel" four or five times, the dialogue boxes disappear leaving the program still open so I can actually use it.

May not be easy to fix without the Office CD, but you may well be lucky and have the hidden Office MSO cache folder which has all the installer/cab files located in it... all you need to do is to goto Tools > Folder Options > View and tick Show Hidden files and Folders then quickly have a look for this folder in the root of the drive.

MSOCache ?

I found a post on here that was similar to my problem. I keep getting a little box popping up that says "Error 1706. I did the scan and a whole bunch of my files are apparently in bak folders. So now I have the list of files and don't know what to do with them. Any takers? Hello.

I recently had some problems with my pc getting infected with system check - which was succesfully removed with assistance from this site and the fabulous Gringo.

However, when starting Outlook, it calls for disc to be inserted. I can cancel the process, but a new window pops up with Error 1706. I can cancel this each time, but if I have emails in my outbox and forget them, they are always returned as undeliverable. It's a hassle basically. I guess I can live with it but if there is a fix or advice, I'd be glad to hear about it.

Tks for any advice/assistance

Tempsc
(PS: I do have an office disc but I'm not certain if it's the disc that was originally used to set up this PC. Do I need the correct disc or can I use any - or, do I need to use one at all?)

I keep getting a weird error message that pops up when I visit certain web pages. I get the following message:

Error 1706: No valid source could be found for product Microsoft Office 2000 Professional. The Windows installer cannot continue.

Unfortunately, it takes about 10 clicks of this message to get it to finally close on my desktop.

I have taken a screen shot of the web browser and error message which can be viewed at:

It's in the Startup Folder in MSConfig. Could it be related to my problem to my other error message "photogallery error 1706. no valid source could be found for product photogallery"?I uninstalled TrenMicro Internet Security as I was not happy with them. I have since installed AVG.BTW, I had to Copy/Paste the attach.txt file because it was larger than attachment permitted. Hello,

I suddenly have a problem with Microsoft Office 2003. It used to be fine and now, it has this error #1706. (What causes make me get this error?)

I can't repair it because it requires a CD and I don't have the CD anymore.
Is there a way to fix it without the need of a CD?

Thank you in advance

Answer:Microsoft Office 2003, error 1706

Try installing the compatibility Pack. There have been a few service packs for Office 2003 as well. Have you kept it up to date?

How Do I Install or Uninstall The Update Manager?
Document ID: Q111006
Last Revised On: 9/27/2004

Description
The Update Service is a tool that InstallShield sells to software vendors that is designed to help you keep your software up-to-date. Keeping your software updated has many benefits, but InstallShield recommends that software vendors build in an option to disable automatic update checking. If you are using an application that uses the Update Service, your application may have a configuration option to disable update checking. Please check your application’s menu options.

If your application does not have this option, InstallShield has created a tool called the Update Manager that can disable automatic update checking. The Update Manager utility lists all applications currently using Update Service on your computer and the Update Service's status with that application.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Procedure
You may already have the Update Manager installed. If Program Updates is listed in your Start menu, then the Update Manager is installed. If you do not have the Update Manager installed, follow these instructions to download and install it:

Ever since I tried to update Windows in June 2010, I have keep getting an Error 1706 message stating: No valid source could be found fro product Roxio Media Manager. The Windows installer cannot continue. It then says the feature you are trying to use is on a CD-ROM or other removable disk that is not available. It then says to insert the "Roxio Media Manager" disk and click ok.

Problem is I don't have this CD. Another box keeps looping stating "Please wait while Windows configures Roxio Media Manager." What is causing this? How can I stop this annoying issue?
Thanks!:confused

Have you ran virus scans if not click this link http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=208809 and start a full clean out then repost into malware forum and post with the required logs and then be patient as the malware fighters can become a little busy at times, make sure you follow all the instructions to the full !

Hi-

I have a Sony Vaio running Windows 7 and whenever I try to open a video I get this popup that OpenMG Secure Module is trying to install itself, if you click OK an error comes up that the network destination cannot be found error 1706, same thing if you click cancel.

The OpenMG program doesn't exist in my program list, and I googled some stuff that says Sonic Stage has something to do with it and I don't have that on my computer either.

Does anyone know what to do about this? Quite annoying.

Error 1706 Appears when running Office 2000 Programme (Word, Excel etc) (WinXP Professional)

This is because the User is ?Limited? or ?Guest? and does not have the appropriate access as written to the Registry when Office 2000 was first installed.

(e.g.Office 2000 may have been installed over a network or from a shared CD on a network Machine)

The following resolution worked for me You will need Office 2000 Installation CD 1 and CD2

For Limited Users

Log off the Limited User(s)
Log on as a user with Administrative Privileges
Give the Limited User(s) Administrative privileges through Control Panel | User Accounts
Log on as each Limited User(s) in turn (to refresh privileges ) and for each User do points 5 to 15
Insert Office 2000 CD 1 into CD drive
Run MSWord
At Update screen Browse to Office 2000 CD 1
OK
Run MS Excel and browse to CD1 if needed
Run Ms Powerpoint and browse to CD if needed
For Publisher
Insert Office 2000 CD 2
Run MS Publisher
At Update screen Browse to Office 2000 CD 2 if needed
OK
Reset User privileges to Limited as required.
For Guest User

This is a bit more complicated. You need to Put ?Guest? into the ?Administrators? Group temporarily.
Then run points 5 to 16 above
Then take ?Guest? out of the ?Administrators? Group.

To add Guest to Administrators Gro... Read more

Hi, I have a program (read & write 9) which has previously worked. I tried using it today and it comes up with a dialog box trying to configure the program. It then comes up with another dialog box stating "The feature you are trying to use is on a network resource that is unavailable." At the bottom of the box there is a source location box "D:\Users\Doug\Desktop\Packages\Software\Read and Write 9 Gold\installer\Local Install\"
When I close the dialog box it opens another saying "Error 1706. No valid source could be found for product Read And Write 9. Windows Installer cannot continue."
When I click ok another box comes up saying "fatal error during installation"
If I got directly to the program files C:\Program Files\Texthelp Systems\Read and Write 9
I can run the application file from there and it starts the program with my personal settings.

Why does the desktop and start menu keep trying to configure the program and how can I fix it?

Thanks Doug

I have a brand spankin' new Dell Computer for 2 weeks... It is operating on Windows XP with an Athalon Dual Processor.

Since my old one "fried" I have been trying to get the new one up and running with some of my "old computer download friends." This past week I have had an annoying message come up everytime I go into MS Word or log onto my system. It says: Error 1706

"Setup cannot find the required files. Check your Connection to network or CD-ROM drive. For other potential solutions to this problem, see C:\programfiles\office10\1033\setup.hlp"

It also refers to MS Word 2002. My system came with a MS Word 2002 program on it. I have done nothing other than go to MS to do updates. I do not know if I have downloaded something into my sytem that is causing it or what. Everything seems to be running fine.

The message is just annoying and I want it to stop. Can anyone help me get rid of this?

Answer:Solved: MS Word 2002 Error 1706 Can't get rid of

Did you get an Office or Word 2002/XP CD? If so I'f just try reinstalling it or repairing the installation using the CD's.

But some Dell's only come with a trial version of Office, if yours is just the trial then remove it.

Hi there,

Any time I go to run a certain program (Forklift Engineer) I get the error message "error 1706 no valid source could be found"

It asks for the Dell CD, when I put this in nothing happens. It seems to be an installer problem.

Will I un-install Dell drivers etc? and is there a good Clean up Utility to help with this problem?

Thank you,

John.

Hi Pancho5428, Our apologies for the delay--we are really swamped lately. If you still require help, please post a new fresh log so I can see if anything has changed and please describe what is happening now.If you have not done so already, please do the initial cleanup steps in the following instructions before posting your new log: Preparation Guide For Use Before Posting A Hijackthis LogPlease read over the instructions there for posting a normal log--what you have posted is a Startup list. Also open HijackThis. If you still have the New Users Quickstart screen enabled, click Open Misc Tools Section. If you just have the regular opening screen, click the Config... button then the Misc Tools button. Now click the Open Uninstall Manager button, then the Save List button. Save the list somewhere convenient like My Documents and then the list will open in Notepad. Copy and Paste that list into your next reply to this post.I do however, think that the problem you have described is an issue with Hewlitt-Packard's software rather than any malware. Please be advised that HijackThis and this forum are intended for malware removal only, not for general diagnosis of every problem you may experience on your computer. If, after you have done the precleaning and there is no indication of a malware problem, you can get better and quicker help by posting in the Windows XP Home and Professional or Hardware forums. If it were me, I would contact HP support. I am having terrible trouble with this Proplus.msi - I'm not at all technical so really need some help!

I inherited my computer a few years ago and have Office XP with Front Page on it... I've used the computer and software fine for the last two years but when I tried to launch Word two weeks ago the following happened:

Configuring Office XP with Frontpage message appeared followed by ' installing Office Xp'. It then says it cannot install as PROPLUS.MSI cannot be located. It then says to provide a path to the files.

I could not find Proplus anywhere and don't have the cd so I downloaded proplus files from billynda.com having read another techguy thread.

When the message appeared again I browsed and directed to these files, the message then appears to say that these are not valid and I need to direct to a valid folder. Followed by the Error 1706 message and then closing down of the application.

[When I try to run the proplus files I downloaded it states that these cannot open as the files are elsewhere on the system and need to be removed first.]

I have no idea what I did to cause this, I can't find the Proplus.msi files anywhere else in the hard drive and I've tried all of the solutions from the other techguy thread to no avail....

In the mean time I have tried to launch all my Office applications but all come up with the same message... I really need some help please as I'm not sure what else I can do!
Thanks

Charlie

Upon bootup, my system tries to install ScanSoft PaperPort. There are multiple msiexec.exe process running ... it's a repetitive flashing sequence which can only be stopped by doing several End Process. I've done the following: (1) Uninstalled the Windows Installer, then reinstalled the latest Installer. (2) Uninstalled PaperPort, then reinstalled it. (3) Cleared all %temp%, prefetch files numerous times along with emptying the Recycle Binn, always BEFORE the reinstall of Windows Installer and PaperPort. (4) Googled the error 1706, all have pointed to other programs, not to PaperPort; hence, not sure if it's a Windows Installer error or a PaperPort error. (5) Followed the steps in the MALWARE REMOVAL guide, yet the situation still exists. Attached the files indicated by the Malware Removal Guide. FIRST ATTACHMENTS

SECOND FILES ATTACHED (NOT) ... the RRlog.txt could not be run. I started the Running RootRepeal program which FROZE my system. I tried two times, left it for over 1 hour, the drive active light went out, the cursor disappeared, the ALT-CTL-DEL didn't function, and the ALT-TAB didn't either. Hence, I don't know what to do in getting the RootRepeal to run.
