Preferred Solution: Device ROOT\MEDIA\0000 requires further installation.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hello. In "device manager" I see an unknown device with this Id : ROOT\LEGACY_NPF\0000 (plus other references, see next): http://tinyurl.com/lzgqz2hAnd in "information system" : http://tinyurl.com/l9udv4aCarefully I desactivated this device. For now I prefere not uninstall this device because with this desactivation I known where I can find this device and I can still see these features. This device corresponds to nothing about my installation (hardware and software), so I think. And with this device disabled my pc run normally as before.Infection or simple problem ?Does anyone could help me (with a ZHPDiag or a HiJackThis rapport for exemple) for this problem and if necessary tell me how properly eradicate this unknown device from my PC ?Some precisions :My system : windows XP pro - SP3My antivirus (Comodo), adwcleaner and malwarebytes didn't find anything. My PC runs well (excepted sometimes for some slowing down but I think this is due to my configuration --> processor : 1,81 Hz / RAM : 2 Go).Thanks for your support.message edited by craumt

I am seeing several of these Warnings in the Event Viewer, Windows System logs. These are Event ID 219, Source Kernel-PnP.

That said, I am not experiencing any crashes, freezes, BSODs, and everything on my PC seems to be functional. So perhaps I can safely ignore these warnings, but I prefer to get to the bottom of something in case it will lead to problems in the future.

I have done some online research on this event, and none of the suggested fixes seem applicable to me. I have been vigilant in keeping all drivers on my machine up to date. I've checked, and there don't seem to be any newer drivers available for any of my hardware. I also have the Windows Driver Foundation - User-mode Driver Framework service set to "automatic" startup.

The details of this event are below.

Any suggested action to remedy my problem? Thanks!

Answer:The driver \Driver\WudfRd failed to load for the device ROOT\WPD\0000?

Go to Start/Search and type devmgmt.msc, right click the devmgmt results and Run As Administrator. In the Elevated Device Manager, are there any devices with yellow flags? If so, these devices need drivers installed. Usually your video card driver.

WiFi connection gets lost automatically. Need to restart several times. Again problem gets repeated. Tried updating and rollbacking drivers. Uninstalled driver in the final attempt as well. Still problem persists. It shows "Device PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_08B3&SUBSYS_00708086&REV_83\34E6ADFFFF52349C00 requires further installation" under "Intel Dual Band Wireless-AC 3160" Information I went through all the previous posts and forums, tried updating BIOS as well. Nothing worked out.  Please help me resolve the issue.

Answer:Device PCI requires installation

Hi: Did you try the latest W10 driver directly from Intel? If not, this is the one you need...2nd one down on the left for 64 bit. https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/26171/Intel-PROSet-Wireless-Software-and-Drivers-for-Windo... If you still have the issue after installing the driver, the only other suggestion I can offer would be to uninstall the Intel 3160 in the device manager, click the uninstall driver box, restart the PC and reinstall the above driver.

Hello everyone,

This is what's showing up in my event viewer:

Event SourcelugPlayManager

The device Root\LEGACY_PCALERTDRIVER\0000 disappeared from the system

This is what's in my viewer, and has caused my system to reboot when the service fails. It came out of the blue on my new install after a week. I've spent alot of time researching, and came up with the*pcalertdriver* which is from MSI's core center. I uninstalled it with the hopes that all will be well now. I'm just not sure why it has *legacy* in front of it.

In device manager, everything shows up, all devices. I'm wondering if any of you had come across this error before? It's ID 11.

Any thoughts/opinions appreciated.

I have recently installed windows 8 and when I boot the PC up it says
Press enter to boot from USB.....
If I press that then it will boot from the installation media , however if I don't press anything it will boot to windows 8. The problem is ; If I remove the USB with the windows installation on it , and then boot the PC up, it tells me it cannot
find any bootable OS.
I went onto my BIOS and put Windows Boot Manager as the primary boot , and then the hard drive the OS is installed on as the secondary boot. But this did not help it.
Any help would be appreciated

Hello to all,
Not being as deeply into computing as I once was, I am unable to resolve this issue if it is indeed a problem. Always have gotten munificent assistance in this forum and hoping for a hand.
I have been having several issues on my computer and I found and ran for the first time, System Info > Problem Device. Much to my surprise I was confronted with the Device = SBRE, the PNP Device ID = ROOT\LEGACY_SBRE\0000, Error Code This device is not present, is not working properly, or does not have all it's drivers.
The computer is a homebuilt, this is the second board and processor running W7 Ultimate 64 Bit. It is a
MSI G52-XXXX1HA board and a AMD Phenom II X4 965 Processor. Did some research and got as far as going into the Device Manager, enabling hidden devices and in a list of Non-Plug and Play Devices I found the SBRE entry which shows an alert.

The unknown device is stopped and will not start because of uninstalled software.

Now as to the unknown issues I have that are discomforting and unknown to me as to why or how....
Both Motherboards have shown an inability to identify the SATA Ports consistently. Constant changing their order. C:\ drive becomes #1 and is shown as a secondary drive sometimes with my D:\ Drive showing as the primary or and vice versa.
The second problem is IIRC only occurring with the current board and processor, is that the OS will sometimes boot up to the control/alt/delete prompt and when entered, will not show the ac... Read more

I'm getting an unsuccessful driver install message on my windows 8.1 laptop that reads like this: Driver Management concluded the process to install driver NULL Driver for Device Instance ID ROOT\SCSIADAPTER\0000 with the following status: 0xE0000203

Under my device manager, under "other devices" there is a device labelled "unknown device" and under its details it also says SCSIADAPTER\0000 - what is this?

In addition to that, every time my system goes into sleep mode, it seems to crash and restart successfully on its own. In the reliability monitor report, I get the following message: windows stopped working. When viewing technical details, I get this message: The computer has rebooted from a bugcheck. The bugcheck was: 0x0000009f (0x0000000000000003, 0xffffe001adb8e060, 0xffffd00173106a60, 0xffffe001b246bbd0). A dump was saved in: C:\WINDOWS\MEMORY.DMP. Report Id: 091415-36328-01.

I've also gotten a hardware error (the system used to frequently get them but it doesn't occur as frequently anymore). The message for the hardware error reads as: Description

Hi!, I was checking my system using AVG PC TuneUP and I saw an error it says:Name: NetGroup Packet Filter River Value: ROOT\LEGACY_NPF\0000Advanced: Driver is not present, not working properly...I did some quick research and found out that it's an unwanted application. I checked my "Device Manager" and there was no "Other Devices". I strongly think this is some virus or something. Plus my desktop keeps shutting down for no reason, all the fans are working. Please help me. message edited by Michaelensis

Answer:ROOT\LEGACY_NPF\0000 Virus or Hardware problem?

""NetGroup Packet Filter River""It's actually NetGroup Packet Filter Driver, not RiverIt's not shown in Device Manager because it's not a device driver, it's a Microsoft system driver installed with Windows and should be located here: C:\Windows\System32\drivers\npf.sysIf you find it anywhere else it's malware that's deliberately named to look like a genuine file.message edited by phil22

Recently, I have come across several pieces of software that say they require media player 9 to work. 1 was even microsofts news clips on the msn in web site. Another is a learnkey learning disk. I have media player 10, but for some reason, the software on both ends won't work. When I go to install 9, it tells me a greater version is already installed, and it won't let me go to 9, however the software continually tells me that I need 9. Any advice appreciated.

Most important matter:  I require this update to run the latest update to my backup software (I have reverted to an earlier version for now, but will not have their continued product support without updating). I install the update, receive a successful
notification, then am prompted to install over and over; the install never actually takes. I have checked the pertinent registry keys, installed Update KB3035131, and rebooted twice following a successful registration. This update just will not stay installed,
along with 7 others. I have hidden the others, but this one is necessary. Thanks.

I have an X1 Carbon Touch i7 16GB 3443 CTO running Windows 8.1, all drivers/BIOS updated. When I plug in USB devices (even onces that have already been installed and configured), Windows prompts me to restart (see attached image). If I restart, unplug the USB device, and then re-plug it in, I get hte same prompt.  This problem existed when I was running Windows 8. When I upgraded to 8.1, the problem went away, but re-appeared after several months. I wouldn't be too concerned, but some USB audio devices I plug in do not work as expected (can't hear audio through them or speak through them), even though  I'm not sure if these are related, but I have a feeling there is an issue with USB on my laptop. I have had the motherboard replaced 3 times and speaker assembly replaced once due to other audio issues (audio would stop playing through my PC speakers, but tapping the case would cause hte audio to start playing again). I believe this to be unrelated, but I'm quesitoning the quality of the original components in my Carbon Touch. I will be calling support, but I wanted to see if anyone else has a suggestion on the USB issue.

Hi: Below is the link to the driver you need for the 0004... ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp64001-64500/sp64144.exe As for the wireless card...it never could connect to the 5.0 GHz band. It is only a single band (2.4 GHz) card. Anytime you see a wireless card ending with the suffix of b/g/n, that means it is a single band 2.4 GHz only card. A dual band wireless N card has a suffix of a/b/g/n or a/g/n. Specs on the card from QCA: http://qca.qualcomm.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/11/AR9485.pdf As for the connection issues, for most folks I have read posts on regarding the atheros 9xxx cards, many of them don't work at all on W10. I am reluctant to give you a W10 driver to try, but here it is.  I cannot tell you if it will help or not, or make things worse. So, I'll leave it up to you if you want to give it a try or not. ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp71501-72000/sp71815.exe

In January,I purchased an older HP Compaq Presario laptop. I have had no problems with WiFi connectivity until today. After investigating, I discovered the driver was missing. How, I have no idea. I watched a Netflix movie before going to bed last night, and this morning, no driver. Anyway, I found this forum and downloaded both drivers through my smartphone. The first one mentioned, http://qca.qualcomm.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/11/AR9485.pdf, did the job. I use Windows 10.

I am trying to run a piece of legacy hardware (a sidewinder precision 2, the one that is purely USB, no game ports) on a Vista install.

Though warned it might not work, I was surprised when I plugged it in that it worked flawlessly as a plug and play device; I installed no extra software or drivers. I happily chugged around in a game for a while, then quit. A little later, I tried again and after a short investigation realized that Vista did not recognize the device was connected. I tried the other port on the front of my computer, nothing. Then I tried the hub on my keyboard. Worked like a charm, for a few hours. On a restart, it no longer sees it there; nothing changes in system properties when I unplug/plug it in anywhere, and it is obviously no longer listed in game devices in control panel as it was before.

There is no noise on a hardware disconnect after Vista loses track of the joystick, but neither is there a disconnect sound at the time it loses track (as far as I've heard).

I've run out of ports! Any ideas as to why Vista would throw this kind of fit over a device?

Point: I also deleted entries relating to sidewinder in the registry when I ran out of ideas, deleting everything below joystick where a sidewinder entry occurred. No luck so far.

Sorry if this post should be in hardware, seemed like I needed an answer to the Vista side of the problem. Thanks in advance for your time, this is a new one to me.

Running XP Home & asked MP10 for update check - It found 13MB update which I downloaded & wizard installed. When computer is rebooted & I check again, the update is re-found to be installed again! I have done this several times but it always says this is an available update. (NB: If I check before turning off PC it tells me the player is already updated). Anyone know about this glitch? Thanks.

Answer:Media Player 10 constantly requires upgrade

go into start/run/ enter (msconfig)/ click go, in msconfig the /top row/ startup /untick the item (mediaplayer) for this then close the msconfig, it will then ask you to restart. on the next startup a message will come up telling you that you have used msconfig, tick the box on the left side, then click ok, it will again ask you to restart click on restart later and that should be the end of MP10.

I saw somewhere that you have to fill all the slots on the first hub to get something on the 2nd, but is there just a program that allows you to switch or think that usb ports are full?

Reason is, I have 2 USB devices that do not like each other.

Hi.. First - If I'm WAY behind the times and this has been asked before, please direct me to the thread & I'll go from there :-o

Have been getting this flashing message...
"This content requires Media Player 12.2 Update?
on my browser screens and assumed it was an ad of some sort. Then it was getting too irritating and did the dumb thing and clicked it. Knew right away was a mistake and closed browser tab, but just didn't think about it again for a few days.

It's still there and today I Googled the message and came up with several posts [from earlier this year] saying malware, may cause changes on computer, infection, hijacking, etc, etc. I come here before I do anything because I've ALWAYS gotten the most relevant advice from MajorGeeks, bar none!
Thank you for that.

One of them said to run Malware Anti-Malwarebytes, then follow it up with HitMan Pro.

Bottom line ...
HELP - and thanks again!

Well trying to attempt Linux again with Fedora 6 ZOD, and during installation it doesn't ask me to set the root password. So, obviously this is a problem, but knowing how Linux can be a POS half the time, this is no surprise (suspend also does not work but I'll worry about that later).

How can I set the root password in Fedora 6? I need the network configuration so I can get my wireless to work (Atheros chipset), which didn't work out of the box with Fedora. Do I need to boot into some recovery console and do the chroot /mnt/hda1 passwd root type thingy?

Also, why didn't Fedora 6 even prompt me to set the root password? I hear this is something Ubuntu does as well and its rather something that pisses people off.

Hi all,

When I would check out 'USB Root Hub' in Device Manager, there would be a 'Power' tab that would list the name of the connected device and how much power it was drawing. Somehow, that particular tab has 'gone the way of the dodo,' and does not appear. Currently, the only tabs I see are General, Driver, Details and Power Management. It would be appreciated if anyone can assist in getting that tab back.

I am currently using XP Pro SP2.

Cheers,
Mike T.

Hi there,

I tried to install a wireless Logitech keyboard/mouse combination. The keyboard works fine, the mouse doesn't. The device manager shows the "UMBus Root Bus Enumerator" as unknown device. I researched in some forums and found this: "sc config umbus start= demand". But it doesn't work.

In this forum I found an older threat with this post:
Go to Device Manager > Action > Add legacy hardware > Next > Install the hardware that I manually select from a list > Next > click on "System Devices" > Next > then under "Manufacturer" click on "Microsoft" then under "Model" click on "UMBus Root Bus Enumerator" > Next > Next

But when I want to install legacy hardware, the software asks for a storage device with the drivers. The installation DVD doesn't work. What to do?

Any help is appreciated.

I recently found out that my Microsoft Device Association Root Enumerator has stopped working, it stopped since yesterday after I uninstalled the Intel? Extreme Tuning Utility (Intel? XTU) software. I had an installation of it through as an optional Windows Update, but didn't realize that the software itself was for desktop motherboards until later on. I went to try to uninstall it through Windows Updates and could find no instance of the files.

So instead, went to my machine manufacturers site and then downloaded the files from there to install and then uninstall the files. I uninstalled the files successfully form the add/remove programs control panel, but that was when Microsoft Device Association Root Enumerator had stopped working, the driver appearing grey instead of solid.

Can anyone help me with this?

Answer:Microsoft Device Association Root Enumerator does not work

Alright, I went to uninstall Microsoft Device Association Root Enumerator in hopes that it would re-install after I had uninstalled it and restarted my system.

Suffice to say, things did not go as planned and now I'm short 1 Microsoft Device Association Root Enumerator. I'm at a loss as to what to do next, is this driver critical to the functionality and stability of my machine? Will I lose any performance, software or hardware functionality? If so, is there anyway I can re-download and install the driver?

If anyone can help, please respond.

Hi.
My laptop is a GT70 2pe dominator pro
Win 8.1 home edition.
Last year around august i had this problem with my pc.
Programs not working as they should. Expecially nvidia, when i tried to update it the pc hanged and i got thrown out of my admin privileges. Got shut down from my own pc. So I did a reboot of the os. And that was the end of that story.
Or so I thought..
Around 3 weeks ago I updated nvidia again, I got error message that 2 parts of the program couldnt be installed. So my suspicion rose as I recognized the error.
I started to check around my pc and look up stuff, it appeared that all my GPO was gone, certificates for many programs was out of date but had been alowed to be installed anyway. Also noticed several hidden devices as, wierd speakers, network adapters that I dont have.
I had avast but it didnt find anything.
I had spybot wich I rarely had been using and I didnt find anything.
I had mwb that also didnt find anything.
So I thought that I would uninstall nvidia and other "unnecessary" built in apps and programs, but when I tried to uninstall avast it told me that it was already uninstalled.. then my pc hanged up, couldnt do anything.
Restarted the pc and rebooted the os again..
Began to install everything anew, used the built in norton av along with mwb.
But again credentials are messed up, virtuall devices showing up, I thought I found wierd events logs, dont know if my browser got redirected to malicious sites.
Maybe im just paranoid, I dont know, but... Read more

Hey everyone,

I'm using Windows 10 N Anniversary Update, the one with no media bloatware like WMP. However I wish my iPhone was accessible with File Explorer to copy photos. It turns out you have to install Media Feature Pack for Windows 10 N (KB3133719) to get it working.

The KB3133719-x64.msu.msu file itself is just around 100 MB. However when you install it it takes ~500 MB of space which is 40 MB more than if you install regular Windows 10 non-N (yes I had to install several virtual machines to figure it).

This is absolutely not reasonable because the MTP Device drivers included in KB3133719-x64.msu.msu only take up about 3 MB! The works part is the BK3133719 package installation is permanent and you cannot remove it from your N system afterwards with DISM (tried it, Remove-Package returns an error).

I managed to extract CAB from MSU and extract driver INF & DLL of interest from CAB. However when I try to apply driver to my iPhone in Device Manager (you have to use shift-Restart > Troubleshooting > Advanced > Startup settings to install unsigned driver because driver signature is inherited from extracted CAB, according to Microsoft, sorry can't re-find article) the wizard says the device cannot be added because Device class is missing. Actually, yes, the device class "Portable device" is missing in Windows 10 N.

So I wonder if anyone could help me to
1) add "Portable device" class manually to my Windows 10 system (I can get all DLLs f... Read more

The page with FAQs says "If you want to upgrade to Windows 10 for free, select Upgrade this PC now in the tool". Does this mean, if instead I select "Create installation media for another PC", I can not upgrade for free?
I would rather not select the "Upgrade this PC now" button, because I don't know what it is going to do. For example, is it going to make PC unavailable while it downloads all day?

I'm frustrated. <sigh>

Hopefully someone can give me some insight as to why all of the sudden my computer is telling me that my audio and media devices are gone.

My volume control is gone from the task-bar and everything in my system is telling me that I have no audio devices anymore. In 'Sounds & Audio Devices' (in the Control Panel) it tells me that I have no audio device (which used to be SB Live!). Under the Audio tab, SBLive! is gone from there now too and the only thing listed under "sound playback" is 'Modem #2 Line Playback'.

I've reinstalled SBLive! and this didn't fix anything.
In the Device Manager the following have a "!" next to them:

Microsoft Kernel Acoustic Echo Canceller
Microsoft Kernel Audio Splitter
The properties for both of these items list the following error:
Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware because there is a duplicate device already running in the system. (Code 42)

I also was told that it might help to delete the Upper and Lower filter settings in the following Registry Key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
Needless to say... this didn't help either.

Anyone have any suggestions as to how I can get my sound working again?
Please let me know if you need me to post any additional information here!

Thanks!

Answer:No audio device or active media device anymore

I have discovered a huge number of similar files in the root directory of my C drive.  They all have names that start with "UDMFT" and end in 6 digits. The first one is 2,836,257 KB; and all the others are 1KB.  There is no extension on any of them.  I have looked at a couple of the smaller ones with Notepad, but they are unintelligible.  They were all created on 1/18/2015.

The second thing I wanted to ask about is all the TEMP***ROOT folders in the root directory.  The asterisks represent what mostly looks like filename extensions.  Almost all of them were created in March of 2014. I think this was when we were cleaning malware from this laptop.  I tried to find the topic, but couldn't.  I hesitate to say who I think was helping me, because I'm not 100% sure.

Can I safely delete these Temp folders?

Answer:Strange files in Root Directory amd multiple Temp***root folders

Don't delete things manually you might break something. To help clean up a lot of this stuff you right click your C drive. Go to properties under general tab 'disk cleanup' and then click 'clean up system files' button. Select what you want to delete. Careful though there are memory dumps, restore points and downloaded microsoft updates in there as well that you may want to keep. They can grow very large in size. However, they are all safe to delete through disk clean up. As an example on a Windows 7 updated to windows 10 you can delete the Windows 7 backup in there as well. Doing so you can't choose to go back to Windows 7. I made a clone of Windows 7 prior and after Windows 10 so for me I deleted it all & regained 20-30G's of disk space.

We are experiencing this problem with a few workstations and laptops and what we are currently doing is exporting the CA certificate from a workstation that has it in its store and importing it. The problem with this is that the certificate will eventually
expire and we will have to re import a new one again. I don't believe it is a group policy issue because other computers in the same OU are not missing the certificate.

Cany anyone shed light on how to troubleshoot this or how to force (if possible) the workstation to download the CA certificate?

Thank you in advance.

Hello,
I've a very nasty issue with root CA certificate that's disappearing from the trusted root authorities store. I'll shortly describe the environment:
- Two tier PKI infrastructure with a offline, standalone root CA and a domain joined Enterprise issuing CA (both W2012R2); root CA certificate is published in AD
- There's a parent and child domain. Issuing CA lives in parent domain (2012R2 domain&forest level)
- Employees are working on a 2012R2 RDS&Citrix XenApp 76 server in the child domain
- In the parent domain several servers are using a SSL certificate signed by the company owned issuing CA; it's a SAN certificate
- The root CA's certificate is in the Trusted Root Certification Authorities store of all member servers in parent & child domain (so, that's also valid for the 2012R2 RDS servers)
The issue is that the certificate of the root CA that's in the trusted CA store of all RDS servers is being deleted on a regular base (at least once a day on each RDS-server). I enabled CAPI2 logging, but I couldn't find anything that makes sense. However
I'm able to reproduce this issue in very simple way: if I start IE11 on a RDS-server and browse to the IP-adres or NETBIOS-name of a webserver that host a site that's using a certificate from our PKI (so, it's clear that the URL isn't matching the names entered
in the SAN certificate) and I click on 'Continue to this website (not recommended)', the root CA's certificate is being removed from trusted... Read more

Ok, so I've run into a very tricky spot:

Yesterday, I successfully resolved a windows update issue (thread can be found here: Unable to get any updates at all: Error 800f0900 ).

Basically, one problem led to another and I ended up having to painstakingly transfer programs from my laptop to a flash drive and then to my desktop. When I finally found out what was the problem with my USB ports not working, I reinstalled the motherboard drivers, and everything seemed to work fine--for the USB 2.0 ports.

Now the USB 3.0 ports aren't working and I have no idea why. I tried downloading intel's drivers from their site and no luck. I tried downloading from the motherboard manufacturer's site and no luck. So, I finally looked at the hardware/device manager: "Windows cannot start this hardware device because its configuration information (in the registry) is incomplete or damaged. (Code 19)"

Answer:Intel USB 3.0 root hub and USB root hub registries missing/incomplete?

This could be handy for those might want to help you sorted it out, you to System Info - See Your System Specs

Could those Usb 3.0 drivers branded from another manufacturer?

I have a vista basic toshiba laptop (the one I am using now) and I have "unknown device" listed as one of my 4 usb hubs in device manager and I can't get rid of it even when I delete that one and the other hubs and do a restart in safe mode. I think the problem first occured what I connected a .99 cent usb cable I bought from the dollar store to my printer. I see that they say update your usb drivers on the internet at different sites but I am waiting for my credit card application to be approved to pay for "Driver Detective" on the internet hoping it will fix my usb issue. I did a system recovery and the "unknown Device" is still listed as one of my usb ports with nothing connected. I also get the message that, one of the devices connected has malfunctioned and windows does not recognize it, popping up when no usb device is connected to my laptop. I am wondering how to update the usb drivers if the port is labeled "unknown device" in device manager and where I can get free ATI usb driver updates to install and see if that solves my problem. I was told by the Geek Squad of Best Buy that I have a problem with the motherboard but I am hoping that is not so because he could not prove it to me.

Thank You; Ron in distress.

I have an XPS 8500 that will not boot normally. It was running fine and all of a sudden came up with the message "Reboot and select proper boot device or insert boot media in selected boot device and press any key". I have figured out if I go into BIOS first the PC will boot up but is very slow in doing so. I googled the issue and found something telling me to default the BIOS. I did this and it booted once. Trying to decide if the HD is out. I ran diagnostics and it does not see a HD. But if that's the case why does it even boot after going into BIOS. I am running Windows 10 Pro. I updated Windows 7 Pro. I am a strong believer in Dell and find it hard to believe that a HD would go out after only 4 years. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Usually when I see this error its the Power supply, or and bios issue. Anyone have any Ideas. I can actually boot to windows but the computer shuts down in about 20 min and give that error. I am use to seeing that when it will not start, but it starts and stays on for a bit but not long enough to save stuff. I even tried to reload it and it wouldn't let me. I am figuring its the hard drive. Any Ideas

"reboot and select proper boot device. Or insert boot media in selected boot device and press any key.

Answer:"reboot and select proper boot device. Or insert boot media in selected boot device

First of all, no one has any idea what we are attempting to diagnose. Post ALL of your exact system specs; ie exact mb, exact ram, exact video card, etc, etc. If this is a big box system, then post the exact brand and model# If you have a service tag# post that as well.

Note do not post "500W pw supply" Post the exact brand and model# Do that for all of your parts.

Hi There!
I am having a problem starting my PC! I have to start it in the boot menu under the RAID option. If I do not do this a message saying "Reboot and select proper boot device or insert boot media in selected boot device and press a key.." comes up, and just keeps popping up regardless of what I press! I would try using my boot disk but for the life of me I can't find it, and as windows 7 was already installed on this computer when we got it 3 year ago, I can't accurately recall if it came with one!
I am no expert on BIOS, but I have read other problems similar to this one, and know that if I don't have the boot disk or the OS disk, I will need to know that at least. So my boot sequence is as follows:
Boot 1: (Hard drive)
Boot 2: CD/DVD: PM-ATAPI DV
Boot 3: USB: Generic-Compa
Boot 4: Lan

I am curious if the (Hard drive) is the issue. The BIOS tells me that anything in parentheses is disabled from corresponding type menu. But I truly have no idea how to change that. Which brings me here.
If anyone can offer any help to this, I would greatly appreciate it.

HiYou will have to give a little more information. What is the make and model of the computer? If it isn't a brand name what make and model of the motherboard.Or you can post a Speccy that will give that information.[ Go to Piriform's website, and click the big button.

Next, click Download from Piriform.com (the FileHippo link requires an extra click). Or if you want to use a portable version of Speccy (which doesn't require installation), click the builds page link and download the portable version.

You will now be asked where you want to save the file. The best place to put it is the Desktop, as it will be easy to find later.
After the file finishes downloading, you are ready to run Speccy. If you downloaded the installer, simply double-click on it and follow the prompts until installation is complete. If you downloaded the portable version, you will need to unzip it before use. Right-click the ZIP file and click Extract all. Click Next. Open up the extracted folder and double-click on Speccy.
Once inside Speccy, it will look similar to this (with your computer's specifications, of course):
Now, at the top, click File > Publish Snapshot

You will see the following prompt:
Click Yes > then Copy to Clipboard

Now, once you are back in the forum topic you are posting in, click the button. Right-click in the empty space of the Reply box and click Paste. Then, click Add Reply below the Reply box.

Congrats! You have just posted your specs!... Read more

I have absolutely no idea what I'm doing. I tried to get my desktop computer set up for the school year, but found myself with a Blue Screen Error every time I would turn it on. I had this problem on my laptop just weeks earlier, and when I turned it into the shop, they informed me that it was caused by corrupted RAM. So, instead of wanting to pay another $300 to get the desktop fixed, I chose to take out the RAM myself. Bad idea...

For some reason, the RAM appeared to be melted or scratched away a little bit at the bottom (gold part that goes into the slot). So I took that RAM out. Only now when I turn on the computer, it gives me a screen saying "reboot and select proper boot device or insert boot media in selected boot device". I go into the Boot Menu, and it gives me two options, both bringing me back to the same "reboot and select proper boot device or insert boot media in selected boot device" message. I tried taking out a RAM drive from a different desktop computer and putting it into the one I'm trying to fix, but then the monitor wouldn't read the computer being on. I switched monitors, but to no avail. I switched RAMs from other computers, but that doesn't work either. I can't afford to take this into the shop or buy new parts for it, but I really need it for school. I don't even care about it running slower or files on their disappearing forever. I just want my computer to run.

So how does a person with no ski... Read more

Answer:Reboot and select proper boot device or insert boot media in selected boot device?

I just want to be clear here (point form is sometimes good)

PC Bluescreens
Removed Ram (looks to be physically faulty, gold plate scratched off)
Turned on computer (not sure if you re-inserted the original Ram here again)
Now cannot find HardDrive boot sector
Tried Ram from another (unknown) computer (Note: Ram specs may be incorrect)
Would not POST (Power On Self Test)
Put the original Ram back in
From here, I don't know what's happening, probably not Booting again (ie your long heading)

This is what I recommend (even though I'm still a little unsure where your at!)

Remove the Ram (By the way 1 or 2 Ram Cards?)
Blow out (either compressed air in a can, or just using your breath) the Ram slots
Re-insert the Ram (you usually just need one in there to test with) Note: They click in
Unplug the cables going to your HardDrive (HardDrive end and Motherboard end)
Re-insert the HardDrive data cable (securely)
Do the same for the HardDrive Power Connector (pull it out, then push it in with a little force)
Now do the same for the CD/DVD Drive data and power cables (you can even just leave these cables fully out)

Turn on !

Did it work?

there is a good chance the harddrive has taken a dive
looks like u had plenty of "warnings"
go into bios and set "harddrive" as 1st boot device
if u get the same message....... replace harddrive
also go inside of tower and make sure all cables on the drive are tight & snug

Hey guys, quick question for you.. Now my friend has this error: "Reboot and select proper boot device or insert boot media in selected boot device and press any key?" and I've been trying to help him for a while with it. He told me he took out his hard drive and RAM for some reason, then a little bit later put them back in.

And now all of a sudden hes getting this error. He has an HP e9300z computer and I guess has a gaming keyboard and mouse plugged in, which also don't work. So he can't get into his bios to check boot order. He also doesn't have access to a linux live CD or a repair disk CD. He is using windows 7 as well.

So if anyone has any ideas or had this happen to them, any info would be awesome!!

He may need to connect a PS/2 keyboard to get into the BIOS Setup (assuming his PC has a pair of PS/2 ports for mouse & keyboard). Some computers don't respond to USB keyboard input for BIOS access. Mine is like that and it's a new PC - good job I kept my old PS/2 keyboard because they are difficult to find these days.
