I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

All sounds for devices muted, including speakers. Short squeaking sounds appear to come from within the laptop (under the keyboard) and not through the speakers. The sounds apppear to occur randomly. What could be the source of the squeaking sounds and how to stop them?

Answer:The notebook emits a short squeak at random times.

How long did it take from the first use of the laptop before the sound appeared. At my opinion the reason can be one of the following:1. The laptop is new one and this is just the noise of the hard disk. Some hard disk make such kind of a sounds.2. The laptop is old one and the hard disk is going to die and sounds are from the hard disk too.3. What you hear is just the sound of the buil-in speakers on the motherboard and the sound appear when you press multiple keys or repeatedly press shift key. I am not sure, so wait for another opinion.

I can't say any more than the subject header. The audio randomly cuts out and at other times  bursts of interference/growling sounds interrupt broadcast starting quietly and getting persistently louder. any ideas other than un/reinstalling drivers which works but is a pain to do five or six times a day. cheersfelix

Answer:audio emits random 'growling' noises/ randomly turns off

just trying some of the 'solutions' suggested on a link to the right. Tried the f2/component audio test and get the message 'no internal speaker detected'.How canthis be?It then asks to plug in speaker but then does not recognise it.DOHH!!!

For several last days, I have a strange behavior of speakers and microphone in my t470p. For most of the time they are unavailable in both Linux or Windows OS. However, where I'm doing little push on screen backward (like adjusting screen little bit), both microphone and speaker start working and become available. After I stop adjusting screen (making push backward) device become unavailable again. I'm sure that it is some kind of hardware problem and it should be easy fixing (like some connector is not attached properly inside LCD panel), but according to maintenance manual, I do not see any wires related to speakers or sound card going inside LCD panel. Can anybody advise how to fix such behavior?

I've got problematic Dell Inspiron 1564. Suspected bad video.
When turned on, screen is blank and beep codes are "long-short-short-pause-short-short".
I can't find info about this beep code. I've found that long-short-short is bad video but what about next two short beeps?
Hard drive activity looks normal after that and I guess system works fine except graphics.External video output doesn't work.

Hi,  I recently updated my BIOS to the latest version using the System Update tool from Lenovo. For a while everything seemed to be working alright, as the BIOS was dowloaded and the computer rebooted. After rebooting the first time i was presented with the BIOS utility, and noticed that the update was progressing.  After 20 or so seconds the computer rebooted again. This is where my problems began. The computer immediately started beeping this short-short-short-long melody from the speakers. I thought this was normal, so I left the computer on for quite a while.  However, the beeping never stopped. Now the beeping resumed the instant i plug the power back in. I have yet been able to actually getting any sort of information on-screen telling me what's wrong.  I've tried following the "Recovering from a POST/BIOS update failure" on page 267 of the Hardware Maintenance Manual, but no luck with that so far. No matter where I place the jumper, the beeping code is the same short-short-short-long melody (yeah, it sounds like a disney tune or something). Any bright ideas? The machine type is a M92p 2992-B3G I'd hate to have to send it in for repairs, and Lenovo's Norwegian support line doesn't open until Monday, and there seems to be no way to call their 800-number in the states from here  Oh, and would this be covered by my warranty if repairs / motherboard replacement is the only way out? UPDATE #1: I found... I just had the same issue after a bios update on an M91p I unplugged the power and sata connections to the CD/HDD and powered up the PC. After receiving the No OS found screen, I powered off the PC, reconnected everything and it powered up just fine afterward. hope this helps!

I recently had a massive virus pack install onto my PC from a company that is actually legitimate so it was unexpected.
I followed the steps that I normally use to get rid of the malicious software and the virus is supposedly gone but since then my explorer.exe has been using up all my CPU and all my RAM.
When I first start my PC and I have nothing running, even after 5/10 minutes, my mem usage is up to 5-7gb out my available 16. After 30-60 minutes I no longer have any available ram as it is all being used by explorer.exe even during idling.
I am using process explorer to get a better view of the problem so there is some information for you.
I recently had Microsoft security essentials but that is currently disabled as I know that it inteferes with a lot of the fix processes that are used.
If anyone can help me, that would be brilliant. When the system is using that much memory I am not able to get anything done, the pc moves at a snails pace.

Answer:Explorer.exe using all my ram after short time

You can ask a moderator or admin to move this into the Virus Removal Help section, it would be more appropriate.

I have a laptop pc (gateway m1629) running vista home premium with an AMD Turion 64 x2 Mobile Technology TL-60 2.00Ghz Processor and 3GB RAM; 32 bit operating system.

Recently I have had a problem with the computer simply shutting itself off after about 2 hours (it all depends on what I have been doing online or on the computer as to how long before it just shuts itself off).

I keep the laptop elevated and the stand does have a fan that runs to help pull more air in to the bottom of the laptop. I know that the hard drive is fine since it is a new hard drive. Unless, I keep a small desktop fan behind the laptop and running it will simply shut off. I am guessing that since it does not happen if I keep that other little fan running to help keep it cool that there is some sort of overheating issue going on.

After it has simply shut down on me, when I turn the computer back on I am not getting any message that it was shut down improperly. It simply starts up normally again (which I thought was odd).

Anyway, I do take care to make sure that there are no obstructions of airflow to the underside of the laptop and I also make sure that air vents are clear. I am not sure what else to do to keep the unit cool. This has only recently started to happen on a regular basis. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks So Very Much

Answer:pc shuts itself off after a short time

You need to check double check your power settings in Control Panel. They may be set to turn the machine off after two hours.

We have four computers, all Win7, connected to our home network, with an HSHomerun TV tuner.
On only one computer, the Media Center recordings are stopped after 9 to 19 minutes.
This has only been happening for about two weeks -- before that, recording on this computer was fine.
These are scheduled recordings, either via "Guide" or by "Channel and Time" scheduling, even in the middle of the night, when none of the other computers are on, so I see no way that it could be a tuner problem, but I could be wrong.
The recording starts out fine, then just stops after a few minutes.
The scheduled time can be from half an hour to three hours -- still only a few minutes are recorded.
I removed the Media Center, via Control Panel, and added it back, with no change.
Any suggestions appreciated.

By following the steps in some of the other posts I have been able to get rid of a lot of the problems I have been having with my laptop. I haven't gone through EVERY single step in each of the stickied threads, I don't really have the time to do them all, but I've done most of them. Unfortunatly, I keep getting those aurora popups when I use firefox and even more popups if I attempt to use explorer (which I don't use because of that). I've used a site to analyze my HJthis results but there are a few things on the list (.exe mostly) that I don't know how to get rid of. Please help.. My virus and spyware programs have gotten rid of everything they found and don't find anything else.
Attached is my HJthis results..

Answer:I'm short on time and patience..

Well if you do not have time to run the steps in the READ ME FIRST sticky thread you will not have time to fix your problems. You have a bunch of them too. More than just Aurora popups!

Please follow guidelines and read the announcement (No HijackThis logs are to be posted when they are not requested) and follow ALL the steps in the below.

Run Add/Remove programs and uninstall the below:
- WeatherBug (or Weather)
- WinTools
- P2P Networking

- Run ALL the steps in this Sticky thread READ ME FIRST BEFORE ASKING FOR SUPPORT: Basic Spyware, Trojan And Virus Removal

Make sure you check version numbers and get all updates.

- Very Important: Make sure you tell us the results from running the tutorial...was anything found? Were you unable to complete any of the scans?...Were you unable to download any of the tools?...Did you do the on-line scans as suggested? etc.

Now download this: ABIremover

Unzip it into its own folder. Now boot into safe mode with no network support and do not open any browsers. Now run the the ABIremover.exe file.

Now reboot in normal mode and complete the steps below exactly as written.

After doing ALL of the above you still have a problem:

- Download HijackThis 1.99.1

- Unzip the hijackthis.exe file to a folder you create named C:\Program Files\HJT

- Do NOT run Hijack This from the Desktop, a temp folder, or a sub-folder of C:\Documents and Settings, or choose to run it directly from the downloaded ZIP file.

I've surfed the forums but none of the problems seemed to hit on exactaly what i have...
1st problem is that startup and shutdown each take about half and hour to go through (if at all)
2nd Is the most reliable method of making the problem happen....loading a new webpage (like one I have never been to) this is when the computer seems to freeze, but not all the way, I still have perfect control of the mouse, and the clicks still go through but only after it seems to catch itself....And other times it doesnt take any provication to make it do this.
3rd If this counts is that whenever it does this lockup thing, a small noise comes from the computer, like almost a beep, but not from any speakers, cant really explain it (its not from the case speaker either) Remindes me of a hard drive noise....kinda, but not normal HD

The only thing that I have done recentally was to install the game Titan Quest (which runs horribly) and thats it....

Ive already scanned for viruses with AVG, spyware with SpyBot, stuff with Ewido, and I ran System Mechanic6 total care, ran ChckDisk, and there doesnt seem to be any programs running that shouldnt be.

It is about 3 years old and custom built, a little at a time, so the only parts from the original system are the processor and fan, everything else was bought new.

This computer is used just by my parents for email and a little bit of web browsing so it isnt put under any stress at all. Also, one of the CD drives will not open. Are these freezes being caused by a dying power supply?

Im not really sure what is causing these freezes but hopefully you people can diagnose the symtoms and let me know whats going on. Thanks.

Hi. I recently finished setting up a new PC:

CPU: Intel i7 920 D0 (stock clock). Cooled by Coolermaster V8
Motherboard: ASUS P6T Deluxe V2
Memory: Corsair 3x2GB 1600Mhz cl 7-7-7-20 (run on 1066)
GPU: Sparkle nVidia 275 GTX (stock clocks)
PSU: Corsair 850 TX
Sound: onboard AD2000B.
HDD: system - 1TB Samsung spinpoint F3, and WD green 1.5 TB, and WD 320Gb KS
OS: Windows 7 64 bit

The problem is that the PC have random short (about 1 - 0.5 sec) hangs, sound is stopped, nothing moves (no mouse too), just all stuck?!?!?! than it back to normal. no reset or something.
I ran Prime95 blend for 2+ hours no errors found.

I listen to the music non stop so it's really annoying , also in games.
Any idea on what it can be? Its a brand new PC, and its really annoying

Answer:New PC - random short hangs???

How often does it do this? You said randomly, but how frequent is it? Also, I'm assuming you built this yourself?

This is a problem that I've seen happen when a hard drive needs to be defragged, but obviously that is not the case in this situation. The next thing I would do is check your memory using UBCD. Other than that I can't really think of anything that would cause that unless maybe some of your hardware is defective.

Hi Bleeping Computer,
I hope you can help me with an issue with my ASUS K52N laptop. Ever since I deleted the faulty drivers for my Atheros AR9285 wireless adapter and replaced them with akamai drivers from the ASUS website my laptop has been acting weird.
Whenever I play video's, in youtube, in external players and in other webplayers my laptop freezes randomly for half a second making a short buzz sound in the process. I can't move the mouse or type anything when it happens. The interval between freezes is purely random, sometimes it's 15 minutes, and sometimes its 30 seconds. The CPU is 100% constantly in external players and in webbrowsers it stays around 60-70%. This laptop is around 2.5 years old and hasn't done anything like this in the past.
From experience I thought this could've been caused by malware/spyware or virusses. So I ran Malwarebytes and it found two pup.optional.somoto malware infections. Once those had been quarantined I used the AdwCleaner from this website and it cleaned the rest of it. With CCleaner I cleaned my history, cache and cookies. Defraggler to defrag the C: drive, and I ran Avast to scan for any virusses, with latest database it said the laptop was clean. On top of that did ran the Junkware removal tool as well but came up clean. So pretty confident that would do the trick I ran a video test and after 25 minutes the first buzz occured. It hadn't helped at all.
I did an system integrity scan in cmd, sfc /scannow but that showed no erro... Read more

I recently reloaded Windows XP on my computer. Ever since, I've been having problems with it. The computer will freeze for anywhere from 3-10 seconds, then return to normal operation. Restarting solves the problem temporarily, but it eventually begins to display this unfavorable behavior again. I've checked all of my hardware, and it works fine. What could be causing these problems, and what could be a solution?

Answer:Short, random freezings

Most times this is caused by dust build up or fan that is not spinning at full speed. Blow out all dust with compressed air, and turn on and make sure all fans are spinning. go into the Bios and post the Temperatures, Fan Speeds and Voltages.

Hi there.

I recently upgraded my computer to the following parts:
Intel i5 2500k
Asus Maximus IV Gene-Z Gen3
Corsair Vengeance 1866mhz DDR3 4GB x4
Asus GeForce 570 DirectCU II

Additionally, my old parts were reused:
Cooler Master M600 PSU
3x various 7200rpm hdds

I installed a fresh install of Win7 64x Ultimate, got all drivers in place (latest from, then went to restart the pc by request from Windows Update.
As it shut down, I got an BSOD.

Started up the computer again, tried to run a game, BAM, BSOD.

Went on and tried to figure out why I got them, so I ended up doing a Prime95 test.
It lasted ~30 seconds before I got another BSOD.

Note that all 3 were different BSODs, as you can see in the screenshot following.

I have not touched anything that has to do with OC (yet), as I want to assure that all parts are working.

Here is a screen of voltages/temps from AI Suite II, CPU-Z, aswell the 3 BSOD dumps.

Please help me fix this!

I'm having a problem with my router a Dlink DIR-655. I know its the router because if I direct connect from my cable modem the problem does not exist. What happens is I start downloading/streaming something it will start and then just stop prematurely causing me to restart it to get it too finish. For example on youtube, I start loading a video it loads normally for 2 mins of video and then will stop. I can get it to restart if I swap video quality and then it just does same thing. Loads around 2 mins of video then stops loading.

I have tried switching browsers, and I changed my MTU size from 1500 to 1300 I heard that can help. No dice.
My motherboard is a GA-P67A-UD4-B3 if that matters.
I have the latest firmware on my router.

Installed new network card and disabled the onboard one.

my internet keeps slowing down or cutting out regularly. its not noticeable whilst browsing the internet or talking over msn etc, but when playing online games or talking with voip the connection stops for around 2-5 seconds and then works again, and it happens about once every 30 seconds. using teamspeak it tells me i have 12% packetloss, which i suppose gives an idea of the problem. connection signal is almost on full aswell.

Im using a wireless BT Homehub with a belkin wireless G receiver which was 20.

Ive only just bought the belkin receiver so i can take it back and get a different one if necessary.

also, hardwiring my internet to the router isnt really an option because of a large distance between me and the router.

i dont know if this is an internet problem or a problem with the network,

any ideas would be appreciated

I've been trying for like a week to get my Wake-On-Wan working which I did but not to the fullest. It's only working for a short time after I shut my computer off.

When Does It Work
A few minutes (max around 30 minutes) after shutting it off. WOL and WAN works, I've tried from different networks even my cell phone.

When It Doesn't Work
When the computer has been shut off for an hour or more.
My Settings:
Forwarding Ports (7,9,339X (remote desktop): Done and working correctly. It's also done in my firewall.

Wake-On-Lan Enabled in BIOS, couldn't see any power save feature.
Network Card Settings
In the option below, I have tried checked and unchecked and it still doesn't work.
After a few hours the light where the Ethernet cable is connected is on but when I send the magick packet it doesn't turn the PC on.

Computer Details
OS Version: Microsoft Windows 7 Ultimate, Service Pack 1, 64 bit
Motherboard: Dell Inc., 0Y2MRG
Latest BIOS Update
IP is the same

I'll appreciate any help, my plan was to actually write a tutorial on my blog, but I cannot seem to get it to work 100% so any help is appreciated.

Thank You

Answer:Wake On Wan (WAN) only works for a short time.

With my lack of knowledge on this subject the only possible help I can offer is the following clarifying question.

Does WOL also fail after the computer is off for an hour? If it does work then the problem seems to be lodged in the router, not the computer.

Last night I received two BSOD within 30 minutes of each other. The first time it occurred I had a few programs open (some pdfs, photoshop etc.) but I wasn't actively using the computer. I noticed the mouse pointer started to lack and a minute or two later it BSOD'd. I was busy at the time so I didn't catch the error code.

30 minutes later, after a restart and opening some of the same programs, the BSOD re-occurred.

I restarted the computer once more, kept the programs opened to a minimum and everything seemed to be okay.

Both times, after the restart, there was a screen mentioning Acer Ethernet port (I didn't note down the exact wording, sorry) requesting that I insert a boot disk and not allowing me to continue. Not having it, I forced a restart and everything booted normally afterwards.

I attempted a System Restore, but it froze on a black screen with just my cursor visible. I left it overnight and it was still on the same screen so I forced a restart.

I've completed the System report etc. and attached it.

My OS specs are:

Windows 7 Home Premium x64
It is the originally installed OEM software
Service Pack 1 is installed

My computer specs:
Acer Aspire 5732Z
Pentium(R) Dual Core CPU 2.20GHz

Please let me know if I've missed anything out. Thank you.

Many of us on the forums actually do not recommend automated optimization tools for Windows 7. Windows 7 does a much better job of handling its own optimization than its predecessors did. We especially do not recommend registry cleaning as an "optimization" step because automated registry cleaning causes more harm to the registry than it actually repairs.

In the future, if you need help optimizing Windows 7, please post a thread in Performance & Maintenance - Windows 7 Forums or follow the tutorial enclosed in that forum to Optimize Windows 7.

I encountered several BSODs within days of each other. I don't play games or download anything on my PC. I just use it for surfing the net and general usage (mostly Office). I also technically faced a blue screen just 2 days ago. I clicked on a folder and suddenly my monitor flickered and I saw a flash of blue before it went black.

I am using Windows 7 32 bit.

I am not very tech savvy so I would appreciate all the help I can get.

Attached are the minidump files.

Thank you very much.

Hi there, I've been suffering from BSOD's on my rig since yesterday. Usually i can get it patched up by myself with a lot of tinkering, but this time the error messages aren't very helpful and not pointing to any specific program/driver/etc.

The BSOD's started yesterday. I purchased a disk docking device (connected by USB), put in a disk from a different pc that had a hardware failure and started recovering files with easeus data recovery wizard. During this process was the first time that i had a BSOD - this continued two more times until i finally got tired of it and tried on a different system. It worked fine over there. Before that, i assumed the software is just faulty in 64 bit somehow and installed virtualbox to try and run the software safely. Didn't work out though. Outside of that, i had no BSOD's yesterday, but have had a bunch randomly today.

The various messages i've had:
reference by pointer
PFN list corrupt

After some attempted fixing (uninstalling virtualbox and other things) the BSOD's persisted so i did a system restore to two days ago, removing any software changes. However, this didn't fix things. Most recently i've received, "a driver has overrun a stack-based buffer" and bad pool header. Most of the crashes seem to occur when switching to programs (firefox), although the bad pool header has happened even right after logging in. Obviously there is some driver-based issue somewhe... (Forgive any typos in this; my cordless keyboard's batteries are getting low, I think)

My computer is 5 months old, and I've been having freezing problems with it pretty much since shortly after buying it. First of all, here are the specs I can think of:

Hewlett Packard a520n
AMD Athlon XP 3200+
512 mb 2700 RAM
Nvidia GeForce FX 5200 graphics card
Windows XP (just installed SP2 tonight)
IE 6.0

I'll also attach the Hijack This and dxdiag files for you, in case you can find anything in them. The problem: The screen will occassionally freeze, preventing me from clicking, minimizing or interacting with any open windows, or even moving my mouse cursor; essentially, the screen is frozen. When I try to move the cursor, it will be frozen, but eventually will begin to move in short, jagged, delayed movements. The freezes will last somewhere around 10-20 seconds, by my best guestimate. I don't have to reboot afterwards; I just have to wait them out, and then everything goes back to normal most of the time. Occassionally, I do have to do Crtl+Alt+Del to exit IE, but I don't have to restart the computer. It seems to happen randomly, including when I'm surfing the Web, just looking at my desktop, or whatever; there doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason, and it doesn't happen at specific times or after a certain duration of use. When the freezes happen, the computer tower makes some whirring noise, just like when I'm starting up a progr... Read more

I bought the Portege Z30-A-1e1 in December but the performances of the battery seem to be reduced in just two months. Indeed, now in saving mode the battery life is around 4h compared to 6h of one month ago (toshiba says up to 10h, but 4h in saving mode seem to be less than the half). Furthermore, the battery drains very quickly when it gets to the value of 20%.

There is some problem?I have to change the battery in warranty?

Answer:Re: Short battery running time on Portege Z30-A-1E1

I cannot say for sure if your battery malfunctions or not because fact is that battery working time depends always on notebook usage.
The Windows power option settings (CPU / GPU performance, display brightness level, HDD /SSD usage, etc?) as well as the applications running and using would affect the battery working time.

I guess the 10 hours working time is the max possible value which can be reached using the max power saving features.
This means that in most cases the battery working times would be lower.

However, you should also know that the battery should be calibrated from time to time to keep the battery in good conditions.
The battery should be charged and fully discharged several times in the row.

If you did not do that in the past, try it out.

So I have a peculiar problem that I'm hoping someone can help me with. I recently built my first gaming computer. Runs great, except for one thing; if it idles too long it becomes completely unresponsive and I have to either hold in the power button or hit the reset button. The screen remains on (it glows) but it is blank. I have the power button set to put it on hibernate when pressed, but when it gets stuck, hibernate won't work so it isn't just the monitor failing to come back on. If I move the mouse or press a button on the keyboard right after the screen goes off it comes right back on. It's only after I've let it go for a little while that it just stops responding. I have no technical data or error messages to give because there are none. Specs are below.

Motherboard: GIGABYTE G1.Sniper H6 LGA 1150 Intel H97

RAM: G.SKILL Ripjaws Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Desktop Memory Model F3-12800CL9D-8GBRL

Graphics Card: EVGA 04G-P4-2983-KR GeForce GTX 980

CPU: Intel Core i5-4690K Devil's Canyon Quad-Core 3.5GHz LGA 1150

I think those are the essential specs for a problem such as this. Let me know if you guys need more.

Answer:Desktop becomes unresponsive after idling for short time.

If you are running windows you can perform a selective startup with msconfig and disable all services to make sure a third party isn't causing the issue. If running it this way corrects the issue then you will have to find the service responsible by running them one by one. You could also make a screen saver but not allow it to sleep under power options.

After closing the lid, my G550 enters standby mode (power light is flashing slowly), and when I open the lid after a short time, the G550 resumes correctly (i.e., immediately). But if I leave the G550 in standby for a longer period, the power light stops flashing, at which point opening the lid does not restart the G550 -- and it's necessary to press the power button.   At all times the G550 is on AC power, even when off. I haven't measured the time it takes for the power light to stop flashing, but a guess is less than a few hours.  Is there a way to keep the G550 in standby mode for a longer time -- preferably indefinitely -- as long as AC power is supplied?

Go to Solution.

Answer:G550 stays in standby but only for a short time

Sounds like it is entering hibernation. You can set how long to enter hibernation afterstandby, or disable it. Method differs with xp or vista or win 7.

Hi I'm not very technical so please speak plainly!!

To illustrate this point I realised I'd uploaded and incomplete zip file so here's another one!

Answer:Frequent crashes a short time after start up

The data reports are incomplete.
Please rerun the data collection program and let it run for at least 15 minutes (or until the program itself tells you it's done)
Then zip it up and upload it. I'm looking for the MSINFO32.nfo and the systeminfo.txt reports in particular.

Please update these older drivers. Links are included to assist in looking up the source of the drivers. If unable to find an update, please remove (un-install) the program responsible for that driver. DO NOT manually delete/rename the driver as it may make the system unbootable! :

If computer Vista is left on and not used for a short time the computer will lock up and you have to reboot to get it going again. Does anyone know why? and how to fix?

Answer:Windows computer locks up when not used for a short time

Is the problem when coming out of hibernate? See A Windows Vista-based computer stops responding when you resume the computer from hibernation
Also there were some know issues with some NVIDIA Drivers causing problems resuming after Windows shut the monitor off for power savings. You could set it to never turn the monitor off in power settings. Right click the desktop click personalize, click screen saver then click change power settings. Also I read the latest NVIDIA drivers supposedly fixed the issue. Drivers - Download NVIDIA Drivers

I think your starting in the right place checking for malware. It could be a ton of other issues software wise. One thing I would certainly check is the hard drive to be sure it's in good working order. A chkdsk /r may solve the issue.

When I power on the computer I get 3 long beeps then 4 short beeps.  this happens for 5 times then the computer starts.  I have removed everything except the power supply and I have done a restore.Nothing has helped.  What are my next steps.  I purchased this as an open box this week so I can take it back but I would prefer to fix it. Thank you,Hank

Answer:3 long beeps 4 short, 5 time, then boots

@aumurph? Commentary You may want to take back the computer while you can do so. Open boxes can contain just about anything -- depending on the vendor, the contents may not have had any checks since the box was returned (or opened in the store without having been purchased).  Parts may have been switched out, the computer Operating System may not be "in new" condition, components may be missing or faulty. HP Desktop PCs - Computer Does Not Start and Emits an LED or Beep CodeRead and see Section:Beep and LED code descriptions Sometimes an 'open box' discount can come back and bite you.  (Personal observation.) If the computer is for sale at, know that HP provides competitive prices, no "open boxes", and guarantees the purchase. When you see a Post that helps you,Inspires you, provides fresh insight,Or teaches you something new,Click the "Thumbs Up" on that Post. Fixed / Answered? In the last week or so, my computer has lost the ability to shutdown normally.
After that, nothing will open (command prompt, task manager, etc..) but the computer is not frozen. Now, when I turn the computer on, it seems like after 10 or 15 minutes, the same thing happens.

I have used Avast! antivirus software and it found [email protected] (was marked as a rootkit) and win32:dowloader-HQR (trojan).

However, after have quarantined these problems, the computer has not been fixed.

Any help would be greatly appreciated

My laptop is shutting down after a short period of time.  This started about two months after installing windows 10.   I checked my settings and they are what I want so resetting them probably won't help.  I saw an answer to this problem that read as follows:   What does "remove the tick from the box next to 'On resume, display log-on screen'." mean?   I don't see a box next to 'On resume, display log-on screen' with a tick. Open windows Control Panel, open Personalization, click the Screen Saver link in the bottom right and in the following window adjust the 'Wait' time to a more acceptable figure and remove the tick from the box next to 'On resume, display log-on screen'.  Click Apply, then Ok to save this setting.

I've been experiencing severe fps drops in games that my pc should easily be able to handle.

But not in the way you would normally experience fps drops (unstable or low fps overall) but more like as if my pc had two different modes:
The stable mode, i can play the game with as much fps as I expect to have with my setup.
The struggling mode, my fps drop really low (like 10-25) in games that i normally play with 100+ fps

This problem occurs in every game, from minecraft to battlefield 1, so I'd say my pc not being able to handle the game isnt the problem. The only difference lies in the ammount of fps I get in the stable mode.

After like 10 seconds of low fps my pc goes back to stable mode without anything changing in usage by software. This happens very frequently, but also very inconsistently.

I have tried to check my hardware in case that maybe one part like the cpu cant handle the conditions or overheats but neither cpu/gpu/harddrive/ram are even close to 100%.

I have also checked all temperatures, CPU maxing out at 6... Read more

My NEXTBOOK tablet battery charge is getting shorter and shorter. Am I doing something wrong?
It has: operating system Windows 2000
Also built in operating system: Android OS 4.2
Display: 7.85-inch TFT LCD
It takes 2 hrs. to charge, then indicates it is charged, but 15-20 min. of operation and then shuts down so I can't finish a poker game.
Please help!

Answer:tablet battery lasts ONLY short time

Welcome to TSG!

How old is it?
Batteries do die like this, my laptop went from 1.5 hours to maybe 20 min now.

Or it could be like my android phone, open many apps and think they are closed but they are not. I noticed my stand by time was getting shorter and shorter. Turned off the phone and restarted it, all those apps finally closed and my time is back up.

May need to take a look at apps and data usage, close or restrict some or ones you don't use often.
You may have too many background apps still running.

Hello, quick thing hopefully. The computer in our technician's office was running slow 2 weeks ago, she installed a spybot and adaware type program (i gave them to her a while ago so they were clean) not much going on, a few cookies and such, then a week later she started to get a lot of freezing to black screen, and some just freezing on the current screen. it normally happens after a few minutes and there doesnt seem to be anything that triggers it. I was able to recover and mail myself the log file from hijackthis...but dont see anything suspicous, do any of you have any suggestions for what may be wrong?

Hello,  I recently reinstalled my Windows 7 on thinkpad x201. There is no rescue partition on my hard drive, so I downloaded Windows 7 ISO from Microsoft Digital River and installed it. Then I installed wifi driver, downloaded lenovo update and through lenovo update installed everything(?) necessary. At least there is no question mark in control panel > system > device manager. I am experiencing huge drop of time on the battery. Before reinstall, it was able to run for ~ 5 hours, now hardly 3 hours on Maximum battery life. Also, I cant find Energy Star profile in power manager, which I was using before reinstall. There are some links on this forum to download it, but they doesn't work. Thank you for any reply!Sorry for my English, I am not native speaker

I have a ThinkPad X100e that runs for a short period (usually a few seconds) and shuts off without warning. It never gets as far as booting the OS. After it shuts off, the only way I can get it to power on again is to leave it unplugged with the battery removed. It then will power on but experience the same symptoms. I'm assuming it is a heat issue. I took the bottom cover off and noticed that the fan revs up when you first power it on but then stops spinning completely. Is this normal? In my experiences, fans with issues either not spin at all or spin slowly and usually are quite noisy about it. Thank you in advance for the help.

I have a toshiba satellite a45-s250 laptop running windows xp. I bought it in May 2004.

A while ago I bent a pin of my cpu when I tried to clean the laptop from dust.
Eventually after about 6 month later I replaced the cpu with the same one.

It seemed to work but kept freezing 1 min after startup.
I completely reinstalled the system. Still the same problem.

I reinstalled about three times until it somehow worked. (I think one thing I tried was to update the bios)

I used it every day for about three weeks and everything was fine.

One time I unplugged it from the power supply and let it run on batteries. Almost right away it froze again.
I plugged it back in and it worked fine again.

Later on I didn't use it for about a week. After that it always froze again every time, plugged in or not.
It works in safemode but even if I disable everything and start up again it won't work.

Somehow my guess is that it has to do with either the cmos battery and the bios or it might be a heat problem with the new cpu.

Any idea?

I operate a two display system. Windows 7 Home 64bit. In order to have a screensaver which works with the two screens (the standard windows one just doesn't), I have downloaded picasa and just use the screensaver. I use Adobe Lightroom to organise my photos.
Originally, it worked fine but recently it seems to come on for a short while and then stop - leaving the normal application screens on view.
Thinking about it, this has happened since I started using Norton 360. Does anyone know if there is anything that Norton could be doing that would cause the screensaver to cut out before I started using the PC again? Or suggest another remedy. (I don't have it set to bring up the logon screen on restart)

Have you tested the hdd? I'd run the hdd manufacturers diagnostic tool on the drive to make sure it's healthy.Having said that it could be a software problem, has this started after installing something new?The next time it freezes have a look here:StartControl PanelPerformance and MaintenaceAdmin ToolsEvent ViewerSystemHighlight a error then click properties, then click on the link below For more information, see Help and Support Center as this may give you information on how to solve the error.

Is there a way to cut the "time" function from the "Short Date" format? When I set up a table export the 00:00:00 keeps showing up next to the dates. I can move the column demarcation lines (fixed width markers) to drop the zeros but get the "export errors" message.

A weird one this.. . after 20 mins or so, I cannot bring up certain popular web sites ( Google, eBay, MSN, BT, etc.) I also lose the BT mail servers and get the red blob instead of a tick in the Outlook action window.
I'm on BT Broadband, XP home, and a Solwise router from the PC NIC. I can ping around my "network" OK but get 100% failure if I ping outside. I'm at present on
I get full facilities restored if I reboot the PC. Rebooting the router doesn't solve the problem. Rebooting the PC does, for a short time.
I have Norton Internet security, but haven't got any site blocking in action.
Anything I'm missing? Could it be a DNS problem?
Any help greatfully received!

Answer:Access to some servers blocked after a short time

An update.......... The only URL I can use, when it malfunctions, is very convenient ( ! ) but why? What is so different about techguy? I can't spot anything.
The BT mail-servers are lasting a little longer before I lose those too. Again if I reboot the PC, the problems disappear.
Thinking back, I did have a corrupt file report last week in folder. What should be in here?

We have had a bunch of computers coming in and our customers have the same complaint, only works online for a short period of time.

I've been unable to find a common thread between the computers, except for windows XP.

A wipe and reload fixes it, and a new nic fixes it.

Different brands have had the problem, different antivirus programs on the computer, different computer makes, laptops.

Upon plugging the patch cable in, it acquires an IP and it'll be fully functional for about .5mins. After that .5mins nothing works, can't ping google, can't browse websites, can't even ping the gateway/router/local computers.

Hello, recently my laptop (Dell Inspiron 6400, running WinXP Media Edition)'s been failing; it freezes anywhere from ten seconds to five minutes after I log in. I'm unable to install an antivirus because the laptop freezes during installation. Safe Mode seems to be, well, safer, although even so it has frozen.

I'm unable to install the antivirus (Kaspersky) in Safe Mode because Windows Installer is disabled, and none of the solutions I've found online seem to do the trick. And I suspect that even if i could get the installer to work, it'd freeze halfway through anyway.

I have no idea what's causing the freezing; it might not even be a virus at all. I've noticed that the laptop always freezes at the "Copying new files" stage of the Kaspersky installation, although whether that has something to do with my own timing or that procedure I can't guess. Also, the time that the computer did freeze in Safe Mode, I was attempting to rename a file.

The computer is completely frozen; Num Lock / Scroll Lock can't be activated/deactivated, the mouse doesn't move, etc. I can't even shut down without either pulling the plug out or holding onto the power button.

Answer:Laptop freezes after a short period of time

That model has been out for about three years? How long have you had your Inspiron 6400?

We need to know the configuration, including hard drive size, brand, free space, as well as memory installed.

It could be that the CPU cooling is too full of dust, hair, fiber, etc. to cool adequately... or that the hard drive is failing, or that you have inadequate memory. But it could simply be an infestation that needs to be cleaned out.

Have you tried re-enabling Windows Installer? Have you attempted to use MalwareBytes, SuperAntispyware, ComboFix, Windows Defender, Spy Sweeper, Spyware Doctor, or other top-flite spyware detectors and removers?

Hi all,

I've recently gotten a new Acer 5750-6845 laptop. A couple days after starting to use it, MEMORY_MANAGEMENT BSOD problems have arisen, occuring briefly after I log in. Here are my specs:

Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit
Intel Core i5-2430M
4GB DDR3 memory (sorry, don't know the brand since I'm just looking at the box)
I hadn't done much before the blue screens started coming up. The first thing I did was uninstall the trial version of McAfee that came pre-loaded because I figured it would be better to use a free full version antivirus software. So after that, I installed Avast. Nothing bad happened then--Avast seemed to work completely fine, scanning for viruses and updating itself. I also installed Microsoft Office 2007, the Google Chrome browser, Spotify, and some games like Skyrim (I don't believe that Skyrim caused problems because it worked).

But then, on the third day I started getting BSODs right after logging in; the majority of which were MEMORY MANAGEMENT (I also got Page fault in invalid page once).

I recovered the computer using the Acer recovery DVDs I originally made. After that, the blue screens were gone (so I thought). Never suspecting Avast to be faulty, I immediately did the same routine: uninstalling McAfee and then installing Avast.

Later, when browsing the web, the MEMORY_MANAGEMENT blue screens came back up and haven't gone away since. I can use safe mode pretty reliably, but when using Windows normally the BSODS come... Read more

I have a home server running Windows 7 Ultimate x64 on a PC with an Asus P5N-D motherboard. (nVidia 750i SLI chipset, nForce 10/100/1000 NIC)
We have around 10TB of hard drives connected to it and all are in RAID 1. (two 2TB+2TB arrays with Seagate Green drives and one 1TB+1TB array with Seagate 7200.12 drives)
Randomly, it will decide to slow down from gigabit to 100mbps. (My router shows gigabit as orange and 100mbps as green)
That's very unfortunate for us seeing as we transfer hundreds of gigs of data through it regularly.
If I unplug the cable from my router (Netgear N600 DR3700, DD-WRT v24-sp2 (02/17/11) st) and immediately reconnect it, it goes back to gigabit. (The light also switches from green, 100mbps, to orange, gigabit)

Here is a screenshot of my advanced network settings box.

And here are the settings I have selected:

Network Address: Not Present
Priority and VLAN: Priority Enabled
Speed/duplex settings: Auto Negotiation
EVERYTHING else is set to Disable

Under Power Management, "Allow .... turn off to save power" is unchecked.
Any help? I'd rather it stay in gigabit mode.

I'll cut to the chase - my computer is crashing, a lot. It seems to do it mostly when I am either 1) allowing it to idle and do nothing for more than a few seconds, or 2) performing medial tasks like writing in Word or something like that.

All of my info is attached in a zipped file.

I'm specifically focused on the three most recent crashes (Codes 3b, 24, and 1e) . There should be a lot more in there because my system seems to bug-check if I leave it idle for more than 20-30 seconds, but my computer wasn't creating .dmp files until I ran chkdsk with both options selected.

Let me know if you need any further info. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

NAV recently found Bloodhound.exploit.213, but says it has been quarantined sucessfully.

After a reboot, both NAV and/or Windows Firewall get shown as "off" by the Security Center's popup. The system basically locks up for 5-20 seconds when this occurs. Then the warning popup goes away and AV and firwewall are active/on and I have full internet access, etc. Everything seems fine.

Malwarebytes finds the following notice:

This started a couple nights ago. My computer was refusing to go to sleep; every time I tried to put it into sleep mode, it would still be running and wake up immediately if I moved my mouse or pressed a key on my keyboard. This happens once in a while, and is usually fixed by closing uTorrent. I tried this, however, and it didn't work. I found this page and followed its instructions to open command prompt and try to find what was preventing my computer from sleeping. Command prompt told me that the culprit was mst.exe, which I searched for on Google and found mixed results about (some said it was a normal computer process, some said it was a virus). With more haste than I should have, I opened Task Manager and ended the process mst.exe, which allowed me to put my computer to sleep. The next morning I woke up my computer and used it for a few minutes before things stopped responding. I could still move my mouse, but clicking anywhere always resulted in "[program name] (not responding)". I couldn't open or close anything, Ctrl+Alt+Delete wasn't doing anything, etc. My computer was essentially useless unless I wanted to watch my mouse move around the screen. I held down the power button and turned my computer back on, but later that day (I'm guessing about 6 hours later, although that estimate could be way off) the same thing happened. I restarted my computer the same way and now this happened within a couple hours. This has happened a few times now and seems to be something th... Read more

I just bought a new Dell XPS 410 with Windows XP Home. I tried hooking it up to the network at my current residence, both wireless and wired to the router(internet provider is some sort of DSL, Comcast or Qwest probably), and the internet cuts out for a second every couple of minutes, it come right back on in no more than 5 seconds. For browsing the internet its not really a problem, just every once in a while youll have to load a page twice, but for games online it will kick me off during that second of disconnect.
I brought the computer over to my dad's house and connected to his wireless network(Internet provider is Cox Cable), it still does it but for some reason not as bad. I only notice it there because every couple of minutes in World of Warcraft I will get a second of lag and then be back to normal, but it never totally kicks me off. I've uninstalled McAffe and turned off the Windows firewall thinking those might have something to do with it, but to no avail.

Just purchased new Dell Vostro (XP Pro) desktop, wired. used HP Install Network Printer Wizard to connect to HP LaserJet 4050TN. Been using this forever with all computers, never any problems.

Now, only with new Dell box, suddenly cannot print. Can see the printer listed, but will not print. Can print from any other computer on network. Have to run install wizard every 2-3 hours. I wind up with multiple copies of the printer installed.

Any ideas?

Hi all,

I was wondering if anyone here knew of a way to make the Windows XP clock display the "short date" (ie 01/01/2008) next to the time in the system tray. I did some googling and found a free software app that displays the date and time, but it doesn't allow you to make it display the short date (it was Clock Tray Skins Lite). I'm posting here because I'd like to save the trouble of downloading 10 programs just to see which one will actually let me use the short date, because maybe one of you have found one that works before me. Oh and it needs to use the same font that my Windows clock is currently set to...

I'd like to make it display dd/MM/yy HH:mm (24 hr). I set my clock to that in the Regoinal options in the Contral panel but it doesn't display the date unless the taskbar is widened. Plus it doesn't show short date. Maybe there is a registry tweak for this?

- Thanks for any help or suggestions!

Hi, using this computer is my only way of resolving an issue with my other main computer.

This one cookiegal kindly helped resolve another issue - this is slow, takes forever and a day to load and run big programs, its used by everyone in the houshold and is reasonably reliable.

The problem is my other PC, it has an AMD x2 64 chip and 4GB ram (maxed out) runs xp prof and for the last 6 months has not connected to the internet, its used for running cad and work related programs and some graphic intensive games, for my personnel use.

Hello, I hope someone can help me out,

since a few days my Internet Explorer 11 (newest version) crashes after a few short browsing time on my Dell Venue 8 Pro. There are specific mostly high crowded sites I can go to and it will freeze, or just if I tab/surf fast enough for example click links in a row. I had the same problem 3 months ago, and the only solution which worked was to reset Windows, install everything new. It worked so far until a view days ago, it began again to show the same behavior: slow site rendering, and freeze after a short time. The behavior is described for example here too by other users:

IE11 crashing constantly after upgrading to 8.1 - Page 2 - Windows Phone Central Forums

I already tried the following steps without luck:

- reset IE settings to default
- cleared all cache/cookies/settings
- deactivated every plugin (I didnt have any special installed at all, I just deactivated the default ones one Flash, adobe pdf, Intel, to see if it helped, it didnt)
- gave "all installed applications" rights to c:
- did a sfc /scannow
- cleared Windows Store cache (wsreset)
- enable software rendering (which though doesnt have impact on metro ie I think)

Heres one of the appangs:

Answer:Metro IExplorer slow and crashes after short time

I could solve it by creating a new Windows user profile, unlinking MS account, copying documents over, deleting my old one. I dont know why it solved it. I guess the "IE profile reset" features doesnt really reset everything, and the IE profile somehow was messed up. Someone have an idea how, or how I could prevent this in the future? Because like I mentioned in my first post, it happened before a few times. I am not using any tools like CClearner or something, I didnt have any addons installed.

Since first usage, the battery life appears very short.

It's just *1h30m* whit balance mode with wi-fi on
With saving mode, it increases very little.... : *1h45m* max.

I emphasize that if I use some flash games on line or some softwares that use a lot of cpu (more of 60%), its duration decreases to only *1h - 1h10m* max also with saving plane...

I've recently installed a dual boot, Windows 7 and Windows 8. The installation went fine but then after a very short time my Windows 8 Screen goes black. I had to press the power button to exit. When again rebooting into Windows 8 the "blue window" shows and the spinner goes around for about 20 seconds, then all goes black.

I've checked the Power settings and ensured the "Turn off display" was "never". I also updated my Video drivers thinking that might be the problem. Both to no avail. I've done a "Refresh" and a "Reset (which took 3 hrs). Again, all was fine for a short time, but while exploring the OS, again the black screen. Would anyone know what else I could try to fix this Windows 8 problem. Thanks so much.

Answer:Dual Boot Win7/8 - Win 8 goes black after a short time

perform all windows updates

reboot when asked

do more updates..

If still black screen, uninstall video drivers and let windows install generic drivers for now, see if that resolves your issue..

After maybe 10 minutes, I get a complete freeze and I need to restart my computer. After many attempts of restarting, it usually works fine if it doesn't freeze in the first half an hour. I attached the log. I'd really need some help. Thank you!

Answer:Complete Freeze Short Time After Turning On Computer

Supereuropa, hello and welcome to the forums. You had only 1 dump file. Please make sure your computer is configured for Small Memory Dumps.

Also, Please go to your last post and in the bottom left corner click 'My System Specs'. there is a link there to update your system specs, click it and fill them all out in as much detail as possible. Please list Manufacturer and Model, and list Desktop or Laptop. If it is an OEM, please list the Manufacturer and Model number. Please be sure to list your PSU and CPU cooler. If you would like to know what we would like, please click 'My System Specs' at the bottom left of this post and see mine.

This is what your dump file says

Invalid system memory was referenced. This cannot be protected by try-except.
Typically the address is just plain bad or it is pointing at freed memory.
Arg1: ffffffffffffff8b, memory referenced.
Arg2: 0000000000000002, value 0 = read operation, 1 = write operation.
Arg3: fffff8015eae4978, If non-zero, the instruction address which referenced the bad memory
Arg4: 0000000000000000, (reserved)

Next please right click on the start icon and select Command prompt administrator, give admin permissions and copy/paste this into the window that opens and press enter sfc /scannow . If you decide to type it in, please notice the space between the sfc and the /. We want it to say no integrity violatio... Read more

I'm using Windows XP, and I use IE, Firefox, and Google Chrome (these problems happen the same on all 3 browsers).

Basically, the big problem is that whenever I try to download something, the download stops after a few seconds and won't continue. The only things I can download are small things (800 KB is the biggest I've been able to do, but it usually stops downloading after about 300 KB), because they seem to download fast enough to avoid the problem. The computer doesn't freeze; everything is fine, I can click "Cancel," etc, but I can't get the download to continue/finish no matter how long I wait.

I think this may be connected to a problem I've been having for over a year on this computer (I'm usually on another one, so I've let these issues continue for a while). The same thing happens with videos; with any kind of streaming video, it stops playing after a few seconds or even a few minutes (sometimes I can watch an entire short video and then the next one stops after a few seconds, as if I'm using up some kind of video reservoir). I updated Windows Media Player as some sites suggested, but that didn't help.

I know my Flash is out of date, but I can't download the file due to the first problem. The video problem has been around for a long time, but I didn't notice the download problem until recently, so they didn't happen at the same time (and I think I did have updated Flash at some point ...
