Preferred Solution: unlock drive when Bitlocker password removed and recovery key lossed

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi, I removed the Bitlocker password simply by hitting "Remove Passoword" on the right-click menu on the disk in Computer. Now I need the recovery key, but since I formated the USB-drive I had stored the recovery key on I'm stuck.

Do I have to format my Bitlocked drive?

Hi,
Correct bitlocker password & RecoveryKey Can't unlock my drive
I have 2 hard drive in my computer, 1st one runs OS, 2nd one using bitlocker to encrypt and works fine until........... I re-installed the OS on the 1st Drive (didn't touch 2nd drive at all, the only thing is that during the installation, I manually turned
off the power once due to the computer locks up.)
Now when I try to open my 2nd hard drive typing bitlocker password, always says: wrong password.
Then I was trying to use the Recovery Key to unlock, but always say:  the key does not match the drive. -- I am pertty sure this key is for this drive.
Is there anything else I can try? Or any more information needed to help me get my data back?
Thanks

Hey
My company is updating our windows, servers, desktops nearly every thing. we were asked to back up all our data on external drives, but we were forced to encrypt the drives with Bit locker, after the immigration to the new hardware and windows 10, I opened
my external HDD and USB Drive using the passwords I set earlier, and as I don't need the drives to be encrypted anymore, I right clicked the drives then choose "Remove password" which I thought it will decrypt the drives and no passwords will be
required anymore. I was surprised to find that my drives are still encrypted, and all what happened is that the password unlock option for my Bit locker encrypted drives was removed. it now only displays to option to unlock (another USB drive or recovery key)
and I don't have both. all what i have is the passwords that I set to the drivers, but the unlock with password option vanished.
can i return that option back so i can unlock both my drives using password? can you please advice?
thanks in advance.

Hello and good afternoon, I have a issue where a manager started the Bitlocker process on the SD card in his Surface Pro 3

with Windows 8.1. The Bitlocker attempt failed at 3.4% completed but the SD card ended up being Bitlocked without providing the Bitlocker Recovery Key (I've never seen this happen before). He doesn't know the password for the SD card and of course
I've been tasked to somehow release the encryption so that he can get the required information off of the SD card.

Is there anything that can be done to release the encryption on the SD card or has the SD card been made non-accessible moving forward?

I recently connected an iscsi drive to my asus tablet. I was not aware that bit locker was on. when I disconnected the drive I could not access it on my other pc. I reconnected it to the asus tablet and went to the system screen and turned off bitlocker. I got the screen saying that it was decrypting the drives and I thought all was fine. when all was done I rebooted the tablet and checked the drive. it only decrypted the system drive and tells me the iscsi drive is locked and wants a key. the system never told me it was locking it in the first place and never prompted me to create a key file. HELP!

Hello!

I've been looking on the worlds greatest text book and am unable to find a solution. I'm using a retail version of Windows 8 Pro and am creating my on refresh images. I can perform a refresh just fine through the PC settings however after bit locker encryption I cannot use the refresh feature; in setting bit locker, it says "You will no longer be able to use Windows Recovery Environment unless it is manually enabled and moved to the system drive".

The Problem: I cannot find on the internet how to manually enable or move a Windows Recovery Environment so that I can use the refresh feature with bit locker encryption.

When I was using the manufacture upgraded OEM I was able to use the refresh feature with bit locker encryption, but not the retail version. I don't want to use a USB thumb-drive to house the recovery environment, I just want it on the hard-drive.

I found the convenience of using the refresh feature over image backup is that it wouldn't format the drive to restore the image, thus loosing the encryption. the refresh feature maintains encryption.

your help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi There

I upgraded a HP laptop to the newest windows 10 version and as per organization requirements started bitlocker encryption on the windows drive.  While the encryption was running the user who uses the computer, for some reason had restarted
the computer while encryption was in progress.

After the restart, it showed an error 0xc0000225 "Unable to find file winload.exe"
It was not displaying the Bitlocker unlock screen so as to unlock the drive.
I also saved the recovery key and have it printed.
Although after booting using a win10 usb and using CMD off the bootable usb to try unlock the drive, it did not work.
I used the command  x:\>windows\system32> manage-bde -unlock e: -rp "the 48digit key"
but it said the password wasnt able to unlock the drive. Not sure why as I have the right key.
Also note that I used the new encryption method that works only on windows 10.

I also tried removing the harddisk and connecting it to another PC that has windows 10 version 1511 and when clicking unlock drive it says that I need a newer version of windows to unlock the drive. How can that be when I have the newest version??

The user has some important data to recover and any help is appreciated to unlock the drive
The HDD is also a samsund SSD drive

Thanks

When I get to step 5, reboot to see if the system can read the keys could be read.
Upon reboot, windows displays an error..
I can not find anything about this, except for Vista, which says to tweak something in group policy.. But that option isn't there under windows 7 :X

Hey, I'm trying to configure my secondary internal HDD to lock with bitlocker, since acronis won't back it up well with truecrypt, but I still want to encrypt my OS drive with truecrypt since I don't have a TPM, and have to use a USB key to unlock it at startup, which I think is a vulnerability since anyone can just grab my USB and plop it into the computer. Is there any way I can bypass this restriction, or even better, have BitLocker require a startup PIN without having a TPM?

Answer:The OS drive must be protected by Bitlocker to automatically unlock.

Hi,

I have 2 drives on my PC. One SSD where Windows 8.1 is installed and a secondary HDD for movies and stuff.
The SSD is Microsoft edrive compliant so I just enabled BitLocker encryption and set a password, i.e. Pass1.

Later I also encrypted the secondary HDD and DID NOT save the recovery keys when doing that. I clicked smth like Automatically unlock or smth when doing that as the secondary drive was always available when logging in to Windows later. No need to enter a separate password.

Now, I formatted the primary SSD and re installed Windows 8.1 but now I don't have the recovery key for the secondary drive. Is all the data lost or I can somehow use the password to unlock it?

Thank You

Folks,

Many hours of googling have not yet yielded a solution...

I have a .bat file that requests input of the PIN to unlock a bitlocker encrypted partition.
I would like to run this before windows LOGON (ask for password during boot).
This is because I placed several of the user directories (desktop etc) onto that partition.
If I do not unlock the drive before login, desktop does not load, and other startup programs (e.g., dropbox, skydrive) cannot access their folders and fail.

I have tried scheduling a task at start up, without success.
The bat file needs to be run as administrator - but even when I indicate "run with highest privilege" it won't run properly.

I have basic knowledge or task scheduler, cmd line, and registry editing (BASIC knowledge...).
So any help you can provide (with details) would be much appreciated!

Hi,

I have a Microsoft Surface Pro 2 and I am running Windows 8.1 Pro Update 1.

I have been unsuccessful at building a WinPE image that provides BitLocker support. I searched around the internet and found many posts. Eventually, I ended up trying to build it with the various added packages I discovered in the various posts. However, in the end, none worked and this is the message I am getting after booting into my WinPE environment:

manage-bde.exe - Application Error

The instruction at 0xa20afa3b referenced memory at 0x0000013d.
The memory could not be read.

Click on OK to terminate the program

Here are the commands I eventually ended up using to build my WinPE image:

Code:

dism /image:C:\boot\macrium\mount /add-package /packagepath:"C:\Program Files (x86)\Windows Kits\8.1\Assessment and Deployment Kit\Windows Preinstallation Environment\amd64\WinPE_OCs\WinPE-WMI.cab"

Answer:How to enable BitLocker support (unlock drive) in WinPE 5?

I resolved the issue, but here's how I got to it:

1) I even tried using the 8.0 ADK, but I still got the same error.

2) At one point during my troubleshooting, I stopped just prior to performing the Commit to create the WinPE image. Then I navigated to the <mount directory>\Windows\System32 and ran manage-bde.exe. The result: A Windows error (something to the effect that the program crashed/stopped working).

3) I tried running Notepad.exe and it worked fine.

4) I compared the manage-bde.exe from my mount directory to the one in C:\Windows\System32 using the comp utility and they were identical.

5) I have always been able to run C:\Windows\System32\manage-bde.exe. So I created a "temp" subdirectory in my mount directory and copied C:\Windows\System32\manage-bde.exe. When I tried to run it, I got that error (program crashed/stopped working).

6) Running it from the C:\Windows\System32 directory, however, worked without any issue. This led me to conclude that it required some dependent files in C:\Windows\System32.

7) After a bit more troubleshooting, I discovered that in order for it to run, it needed something in directory C:\Windows\System32\en-US\. I copied that folder I into my "temp" folder on my mount directory and then manage-bde.exe was able to run without any issues.

8) Final solution was to create a subdirectory called "BitLocker" in <mount directory>\Windows\System32, then copy C:\Windows\System32\manage-bde.exe... Read more

Hi
After rebooting one of our test machines, bitlocker wanted the recovery key.
There were no hardware modifications on that machine.
Error message in event log:
Bootmgr failed to obtain the bitlocker volume master key from the TPM because the PCRs did not match
Event id 24635, source bitlocker-driver
Each time the machine starts, the recovery key is needed.
Any idea how to solve that issue and why it happens?
update:

But now: how can I confirm those changes so that the recovery key is not needed each time we boot?

Answer:Bitlocker enabled drive, recovery key needed during boot, PCS did not match, event id 24635, source bitlocker-driver

Hi,

I would like to confirm if BitLocker accepts the recovery key?

Please update the BIOS to improve the stability for TPM first.

I also would like to suggest you disable and enable BitLocker again to reset the settings.

Team - Trouble here!! Have ~730 GB of data on my 1TB iOmega HDD. Turned on BitLocker on my Windows 7
system, set password, created and saved recovery key file, and i saw it started encrypting (very slowly, which i think is normal). Left it there for hours and when i came back I saw it is asking me for my password for my unlocking... which i entered and it
just wont open. Goes "NOT RESPONDING". I did not lose power during the initial encryption and neither did i pull out the HDD (to my knowledge) even though I read in the MS content that encryption should resume the next time a drive is plugged in,
it it got interrupted the first time or whatsoever.

However, started my research and was shocked to find several people have had similar problems. Also references that data must be backed up before encrypting (may
be common sense). Well, i have not done that, did not know that a simple of act of encrypting could be such a crime, especially when you are encrypting what you have just taken a backup off - before proceeding towards a formatting of my laptop.

Tried the manage-bde commands and the results are in a pic that i cannot attach. Interestingly, i find that the "manage-bde -status" command shows "conversion status" and "percentage of encryption" as unknown. Is this normal? I
do not really remember seeing any screen (when i came back after hours to check the status of the initial BitLock'ing) stating "hey i am done&quo... Read more

I have activated Bitlocker on two identical W8.1 pro machines, and on the first (C1) I have the option to use a password when logging into the computer, but the other (C2) only ask for the recovery key from USB stick. Both computers have no TPM, so Bitlocker is enabled without TPM, but this should give the possibility to start the computers using a password on 8.1 pro.

Can I somehow add a password to C2, or is my only option to remove the Bitlocker encryption and try again?

Hello,
I have a few related questions around BitLocker and TPM.  But first some background, I have Windows 8.1, I have BitLocker turned on, and I have my BitLocker Recovery Key.  I did not manually
initialize the TPM.  I don't recall ever having a TPM Owner password.  But I do see that I can auto generate one, although I have not tried.
1) Is the BitLocker Recovery Key the same thing as the TPM Owner Password?
2) I don't recall ever being provided the TPM owner password during the BitLocker setup?  Where would I find it?  I chose the option to save the BitLocker Recovery Key to my Microsoft Account, but I don't see any TPM Owner Password?
3) I have read that in some Windows OS systems the TPM is automatically initialized, but the TPM Owner Password is not retain where a user can find it.  Is it best practice to even try to obtain the TPM Owner Password if it is indeed not retained on
my machine for user viewing.
I have already spent several hours reading many of your technet articles.  All very helpful, but I did not see any that specifically addressed my specific situation.
4) I am assuming that it would be best if I obtained the TPM Owner password.  Is that not necessarily true?
Thanks

I have a brand new T410s which has BIOS 1.34 installed from the factory. I used the BIOS option to set a hard drive password, choosing the "user" (not "user+master") option. Since I was just testing, I set an easy to remember password of "password". It has a Samsung SSD. However, now it won't accept "password" to unlock the drive and won't let me back into the BIOS unless I remove the drive before powering up! Is there any known bug with setting the drive passwords from this new BIOS? I have had many Thinkpads over the years, and have never seen one do this...

Answer:Set hard drive password and now cannot unlock!

"There was also a problem with what was a critical update, in which the BIOS update program added an extra random bit to the password data, which resulted in users being locked out of their systems. The update to the BIOS was unusable, because the BIOS password was required to access the BIOS. While Lenovo claimed that this problem only affected 1% of its computers, these 1% were forced to resort to inconvenient and sometimes expensive fixes."(From Wikipedia)I'm pretty sure the standard procedure for BIOS updating is to remove all BIOS based passwords before updating. But otherwise, I don't think it'd be very easy to unlock the drive.

Answer:Recovery says my drive is locked - how to unlock?

Are you using Encryption like TrueCrypt? If so, maybe you need to turn it of and decrypt the drive first?

I recently bought an HP laptop at an estate sale. The previous owner is deceased. There is a windows password and the previous owners son also said it had Bitlocker installed. I am not interested in saving any of the data that is on there but rather I simply want to wipe or format the hard drive and install another operating system from a bootable installation CD.
I am NOT the most computer techy kind of guy in the first place, so basically I need the quickest and easiest method, if there is one.
Thank you in advance!!

Ok here is the deal. I had a new laptop that dual booted vista and linux. the vista partitioned was encrypted with bitlocker. I decide to give windows 7 a try so I repartition the drive in to one large volume, format and install windows 7. Everything worked perfectly. The problem is after about a week I realize there was some important files on the vista partition before I wiped everything out. I have found several data recovery programs the can recover files after a format, however they only show files that where on the linux partition. My guess is that the bitlocker encryption is preventing these tools from finding any of the vista files.

So the question is, Does anyone know of a application or company that can recover files from a bitlocker'ed drive after it has been formatted.

If you do not have the password that bitlocker was set up with, then you are out of luck. The whole point of drive encryption is so that you cannot decrypt the data with out the key.

I am running Windows 10 Pro. I am using BitLocker on a non-system drive and not on my system drive. I am not planning on using it on my system drive. I do not have a TPM compatible computer.

Once I log into Windows, I would like to be prompted for the password to unlock my data drive. I did have this running correctly before I started having problems with my computer and had to do a clean install of Windows 10. I have searched for hours but can't find the article that walked me through how to do this.

I found a ton of articles that don't fit my situation because I don't want to auto-unlock, use a USB key or encrypt my system drive.

I would be very grateful if anyone can help me with this.

I was running Windows 10 and there was some sort of error that forced my computer to shut down and restart. When it did, bitlocker was asking for a recovery key. I used the recovery key that is listed on my Microsoft account (I made sure that the key ID
matched the one displayed on the computer) but it said that the key was wrong.
After attempting this a few times, I gave up and hit "skip this drive." Since then, that drive is completely locked.
Since my computer has two operating systems, the second being an old Vista install, the Vista started up. I used the command prompt (in Administrator mode) and ran the manage-bde -status command.
the output was as follows
Volume G: [Label Unknown]
[Data Volume]
Size: Unknown GB
Conversion Status: Unknown
Percentage Encrypted: Unknown%
Encryption Method: Unknown
Protection Status: Protection Off
Lock Status: Locked
Automatic Unlock: Disabled
Key Protectors: None Found

I've tried to add a key protector, but it will not let me. I tried to unlock with manage-bde -unlock g: -recoverykey.
I tried to unlock using manage-bde -unlock g: -recoverypassword.
Nothing is working. I never lost my unlock password and I've tried using that too but it didn't work.
I have even tried manage-bde -forcerecovery g: and get: ERROR: No recovery methods exist for Volume G:.
I tried to use manage-bde -protectors -add and got an error because it was locked.
What is next?

Answer:Help me plz..... unlock bitlocker

From a Microsoft article about BitLocker:

Quote:
When a local administrator initializes BitLocker, the administrator should also create a recovery password or a recovery key. Without a recovery key or recovery password, all data on the encrypted drive may be inaccessible and unrecoverable if there is a problem with the BitLocker-protected drive.

Source: BitLocker Drive Encryption Overview

But I also found another Microsoft article that may permit using a Data Recovery Agent.

Scenario 14: Using a Data Recovery Agent to Recover BitLocker-Protected Drives (Windows 7)

The problem is, drive encryption is supposed to be secure. It's supposed to make it difficult, if not impossible, to recover data. Otherwise, what's the point in using encryption if everybody can just hack their way in.

Why Bitlocker Drive doesn.t recognize my password? Please , i need help

Answer:Bitlocker Drive Encryption doesn.t recognize my password

Your harddrive doesn't only have a bitlocker password but bitlocker is also communicating with TPM chip on mainbord. And the mainboard has been swapped so you hav a new TPM chip with other secret key.

I just started using BitLocker on a Windows7 Computer and am confused about one specific aspect of recovering data drives. I have read through the tutorials on here but I can't seem to find anywhere that explicitly states if this is possible or not.

From this link: Regain access to a computer locked by BitLocker Drive Encryption

I see the statement that "To unlock the drive and regain access to your files, you will need the BitLocker recovery password. If you also encrypted data drives, you will need to have access to the drive that Windows is installed on as well."

My question is if my OS drive dies, will the data drives be recoverable with the password and/or recovery key?

I am not currently in such a situation but I would like to prepare for all possibilities. Since a TPM is needed to store the encryption keys on for the OS drive (I just ordered one but have not encrypted my OS drive yet), are the encryption keys for the data drives are stored on the OS drive itself and this is the issue?

Most of the things I find on Google when trying to search about this issue discuss recovering a data drive that is failing, not a data drive that is in good health but does not have access to the system drive. Can anyone say definitively if this is possible, or do I need to be prepared to lose all data on data drives if my system drive crashes?

Answer:BitLocker Encrypted Data Drive Recovery Question

Based upon what I have read, your data drives will be UNRECOVERABLE if your OS drive dies. I would consider setting up a RAID 5 array for your OS drive for redundancy, this way if one drive dies, all you have to do is replace it and the missing data pieces will be recreated.

Answer:Lost my windows bitlocker drive encryption recovery key

Hello @Destro78 Welcome to the HP Support forum. Thank you for posting. BitLocker keys (for personal devices) are stored inside or in many case they are back-up to Microsoft cloud with your Microsoft account. Since this is a tablet, I suspect that I suspect your recovery key is available in Microsoft's OneDrive spaceHere are instructions how you can recover the key as well as how to get back to business.>> http://windowsitpro.com/microsoft-surface/locating-your-microsoft-surface-bitlocker-recovery-key>> http://www.eightforums.com/tutorials/21433-bitlocker-recovery-unlock-drive-windows-8-a.html  >> http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=237614https://onedrive.live.com/recoverykey Login to the MS account there and check.Use the key to login to your PC.Eventually, if you prefer you can disable BitLocker and turn off device encryption, or save/print the key offlinePlease, note that it is very important for security reasons that you keep the encryption key (Bitlocker key) in a secure place so that only you know it.  More info - re. Hi all,

I purchased a 64GB MicroSD card for my HP Stream 7 tablet (running Windows 8.1 Home) as storage is very limited on the device - my intention was/is to store all my OneDrive files (currently around 16GB worth of data) on the SD card so I could have all my files available offline. However, with it being a tablet and conscious of its portable nature, I wanted to encrypt the MicroSD card using BitLocker (the C: drive is encrypted on the tablet by default) - but this edition of Windows 8.1 won't let me encrypt the SD card.

So I put the SD card into my Windows 10 Pro machine, and it allowed me to encrypt it and I have the key (written down as well as stored in my Microsoft account) - it took a long time to encrypt. When I plug the SD card back into my tablet, it prompts me to enter the password I set when encrypting the SD card on the Windows 10 Pro machine. But it isn't recognised. I've also tried the 48-digit recovery key, but this does not work either - it just reads "The password entered is incorrect" - I can assure that it is correct! If I plug it into my Windows 10 machine, it again asks for the password - which it accepts!

Is there anything I can do to get the BitLocker encrypted card to be unlocked on my Windows 8.1 tablet??

If not, is there any way to get Windows 8.1 standard to allow me to encrypt the MicroSD card volume?

Thank you for any feedback and help

Hello colleagues,

I have a following issues with laptop Dell Latitude E7450 with Windows 7x64 Enterprise:
1)During startup Windows OS I'm get a BSOD screen with error UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME 0x000000ED
2)When I'm launching Repairing Mode system asking for entering a Bitlocker Recovery Key(it stored in AD) to unlock drive.

I'm manually put an appropriate key for that machine, but nothing happened afterwards, Repairing Mode doesn't start and on screen I see a window with entered password and laptop is hanging up.

What I tried to do
1) start from CD/DVD drive and chose "Repair Your Computer" --> See two screens: System Recovery Options and Bitlocker Drive Encryption Recovery. System Recovery Options locked until proceed with manually input Bitlocker key-->
Put an appropriate key and nothing happened afterwards, everything is hang up and only possible to switch off with power button
2) start from CD/DVD drive chose unlock drive via cmd put command manage-bde -unlock C: -RecoveryKey ... and left laptop for 1-2 hours but I didn't got any resultant message that drive is unlocked.

Could you please help me with that case? Any ideas, suggestions are welcomed!)

Hello all,
I happen to have reinstalled by mistake a new Windows7 OS on a drive (I had two drives one with an OS and another with a bitlocker drive used for back up, both drives were IDE drives and the bitlocker was under slave mode if that can be of any help... ) that hosted VERY important data and was encrypted by Bitlocker. What can I please do to recover this formerly encrypted data? The drive is now recognized as an active healthy partition with an associated drive letter (different from the original one)
I don't have the bitlocker key.

If you need any hardware info please let me know.
Help me please!

I'm not even sure how to title this.

I just did a fresh install of Window 10. I do not have a TPM so I setup Require additional authentication at startup. I set up my C: drive with my bitlocker password and rebooted.

When it comes to entering my bitlocker password, I get many characters per keystroke. Mostly on the capital and special characters. I've switched keyboards, tried different USB ports, etc.

If I go into my BIOS setting, everything works. Once I get my drive unlocked, everything works fine. The multiple characters only happen when I am unlocking drive during booting.

My motherboard is a Gigabyte GA-Z77X-UD5H (rev. 1.1) and my keyboard is a Logitech K520. I did not have this problem with Windows 8.1, or Windows 7.

How do I fix this?

I have 2 storage hdd encrypted w/ bitlocker, in addition to the encrypted OS volume C:.

I activated auto unlock expecting the storage volumes to automatically unlock with the unlocking of C: (I enter the psw during boot since I don't have TPM). However they stay locked until I open them and manually enter their psw.

Looked everywhere on the internet for solutions but the problem is still here, so I'm posting asking for help.

Things to know:
- storage volumes are seen as removable, instead of fixed (I guess because ahci is set, so should be normal)
- the two storage volumes have been encrypted before encrypting C:, and have different psw from C: (shouldn't matter either, but you never know)

Win8.1 Pro x64

Been having a weird problem lately. Whenever I unlock a BitLocker volume (I have two of them), I can't access it. The system doesn't even provide a drive letter. If I try accessing the drive letter in Directory Opus (where the drive letters are always shown, whether the volumes are unlocked or not), I get an error saying the drive does not exist.

But if I lock and immediately unlock the volume a second time, all is well.

I don't understand this at all. Anyone?

Answer:Have to unlock BitLocker volumes twice to gain access

No one? This has to be one of the stupidest, strangest problems I've ever encountered--and I've been using Windows for ages.

I changed the password on both BitLocker volumes, but it didn't make a difference to this issue.

I enabled BitLocker and I noticed that the option to save the recovery key to a USB Flash Drive is not there. Instead, there is an option to Save to a File and did let me save it onto a USB stick without issues.

However, in case I get locked out, will BitLocker prompt me to Insert Storage Media like from the image taken from a Windows 7 machine or will I need to go to another PC with my USB stick and write it down manually? And I don't even have a printer to print the key. And I don't want to use a MS account either.

Has this option been taken away from Windows 10?

Please Note: I am indeed running with a TPM.

Answer:Insert USB Storage Media to unlock BitLocker taken away in W10?

It is just the same in 7 and 10.

When you turn on bitlocker you get the option to save the recovery key - this is your first picture. For the OS drive you can save it to USB, for external drives you don't get this option. . See BitLocker Recovery Key - Back up in Windows 10 - Windows 10 Forums

This is a 25 long number (saved as a .txt file) you have to type in if something changes in your boot configuration (you change your boot order, upgrade Windows or something). You can save it anywhere (except on your PC if I remember correctly) but it really should not be on a key you keep with your PC as this would make the whole thing pointless.

This is not the same as the file (.bek) which is saved to USB to unlock the drive (like your second picture if asking for). When you define bitlocker you can unlock it with a password, a USB key or both (this is in group policy - see here BitLocker - Turn On or Off for Operating System Drive in Windows 10 - Windows 10 Forums). If you have said you want to use a USB key to unlock the drive you must connect it.

If you get locked out you must manually enter the 25 long digit pin (as you had to in 7). If you have defined as USB key as required to unlock the drive on group policy you must attach the USB containing the correct .bek file to unlock the drive (and also potentially enter your password). If your boot files have changed and you are locked out you would still have to manually enter the recovery key in any case.

HI all
Im desperate, my Iomega 1tb external hdd has been encrypted and somehow windows autolocked it , now whenever the drive is installed freezes up, and if it passes to the part of the password key, bitlocker stops responding all together. I have tried connecting
and disconnecting several times but its always the same thing, Bitlocker encryption drive stops responding
please assist me here
thanks

Answer:Bitlocker encryption is not responding when unlock key is entered

Hi,

To troubleshoot the issue, I suggest you restart the machine in Safe Mode and plug the external encrypted drive on the machine, and then type the password key again.
Does the window freeze up now? If not, please restart the machine in Normal Mode and perform a
Clean Boot to check the result.

Otherwise, I suggest you plug the drive on another Windows 7 machine and unlock it. Does the issue persist? If not, please run a Check Disk and move the drive back
to the original machine.

Thanks,

I know my password and have a copy of my recovery key for my hard drive.  I ran into an issue with my computer and had the computer store install a fresh copy of windows 10.  I had Windows 10 prior (Not sure if same version of 10).   My
Password and my Recovery Keys are not working for the drive.

I have several computers in use at home.  My office workstation has Windows 7 Pro and is used everyday.  I encrypted three flash drives of different makes and capacities using one of my Windows 8.1 computers intending to be
able to use them on all my computers.  These drives will unlock successfully in all my computers (Windows 7 Pro, Ultimate, 8.1 Pro & 10 Pro) except my office workstation.  The error states "BitLocker Unlock Wizard has stopped working"
and upon closing this dialog box, the unlock wizard box closes.

Each time the unlock fails, an event is recorded in Event Viewer.  Two alternating errors are recorded (one each time the unlock fails).  They are copied below.

Hey All,

Recently my company provided me with a Windows 10 SOE image as part of a UAT. The image includes Symantec Endpoint Encryption which utilizes Bitlocker for encryption.

I went through all of the motions with the C:\ drive to be encrypted and even printed the recovery key. Well, at some point I plugged in a few My Passport USB drives and they became locked by Bitlocker To Go. Everytime I try to unlock or click on these drives it asks for the 48-bit key which I don't have because I never was prompted to encrypt/lock these drives.

IT says that there are no keys stored on the servers for these USB drives and suggested that this would be a "local" encryption. However, they also stated that they wouldn't be encrypted unless I was prompted about it. So, there's this mystery about how these USB drives came to be locked.
I've been doing some research and the closest I've come is getting some output about the protectors:

Answer:Unable to unlock USB drives encrypted/locked with Bitlocker To Go

Hi there

assuming the drives aren't encrypted then a Linux Distro should rescue you here.

Boot up any Linux Live CD - Linux Mint is a good one. Plug your USB in - should be recognized as an NTFS / FAT32 drive. Use the built in file manager (If the KDE desktop then DOLPHIN is the file manager - works and looks fairly similar to Windows / File explorer). Copy what you need or delete other stuff you don't need.

I don't think there's Windows fixes for this.

To make a Linux bootable USB stick I recommend download this ISO (Linux mint Rosa 17.3 x-64 KDE)

Linux Mint 17.3 "Rosa" - KDE (64-bit) - Linux Mint

Then use (on windows) RUFUS to make bootable USB stick.

Rufus - Create bootable USB drives the easy way

Boot the USB stick, plug your other stuff in and use DOLPHIN to get your data. Linux reads and writes Windows file formats.

Here's an example of DOLPHIN reading an HP 64GB USB stick that I couldn't access with windows -

We have a few computers running Windows 8.1 Pro Update 1 here. For some reason my machine has a black and white DOS-style unlock screen for BitLocker.

Another computer we have here has a modern-style, Windows 8 looking, light-blue & white unlock screen for BitLocker.

Why has my PC defaulted to this older looking UI? Is there any way to change it?

Answer:How To Enable Blue Bitlocker Unlock Screen At Startup

Hello Rotom, and welcome to Eight Forums.

Double check to see if the tutorial below to enable the newer Windows 8 startup screen may be able to help with this as well.

Startup Options - Enable or Disable in Windows 8

Hope this helps for now,

We turned on Bitlocker Network unlock recently.
It works fine on all machines we have for booting (we only have Dell's).
However on some machines it does not work when rebooting.
This holds for the XE2 as well as the Precision T1700.
When I boot the network unlock does work, when I reboot it asks for the Bitlocker PIN.
Any clue how to solve this?

Hi all,

I've enabled BitLocker (Win 10 Pro) on a Dell laptop Inspiron 5558 and all went well.

BUT.... When I power on the computer the familiar light blue BitLocker screen appears but there is no prompt to enter the key. Just a light blue screen, nothing else whatsoever. However, I can enter the BitLocker key (blind, of course) and then viola Windows boots up properly! So BitLocker is working.

I would normally suspect a display driver issue but the BitLocker code happens long before any device-specific display driver would load (right?). Anyone else seen this or have suggestion on what to do?

Answer:BitLocker normal light-blue screen but no unlock prompt. Still works!

Same Happening on a Windows 10 installed Dell Vostro 2520.

The windows 10 Pro computer has died, and I would like to put the in my new computer with windows 10 home.   I would like to remove the bit locker password,  so I can reinstall windows 10 pro while keeping my files and apps,
I'm unable to do this while the drive is encrypted.  How do I remove drive encryption from the drive while I have the drive slaved to a windows 10 home computer?

I have two virtually identical Dell laptops running Windows Home Premium.

On one of them I wanted to see what was in the hidden RECOVERY partition so I fired up Disk Manager and added a drive letter. Nothing in the partition made sense to me so I removed the drive letter.

However, windows no longer recognizes the RECOVERY partition. If I run standard windows "Create System Repair Disc", I get an error message "The parameter is incorrect 0x80070057".

The Dell DataSafe program also says it cannot find the RECOVERY partition.

a) Is there some kind of attribute that got changed when I assigned the drive letter and then removed it? If yes, how can I set it back?

b) The laptops are virtually identical. Can I use a recovery disk from one on the other? I'm particularly interested in keeping MS Office 2010 Starter edition intact when I upgrade to Win 7 Pro.

TIA

The recovery partition should have a letter. The System Reserved does not have one. Can you post a
Disk Management - Post a Screen Capture Image and I can look at it and see what is wrong. Be sure and widen the columns so all of the print can be read.

Domain migration required decrypt/removal of Bitlocker.
Target domain using MBAM for bitlocker encryption management.
The decryption and removal of Bitlocker worked via scripted task.
Though after migration to new Domain, the TPM is no longer ON.
Is this even possible?  Has anyone seen this before?
We now need to automate enabling TPM, Activating, and Taking ownership.
Looking at the following from scripting guys as option.

Any help/feedback is appreciated!

I know a BIOS update on my Latitude with Windows 8 and Bitlocker activated on the O/S drive triggers Bit locker recovery on startup. I don't have the recovery key and so am stuck. How to recover without the Bit Locker recovery key?

Answer:BIOS update without suspending Bitlocker has triggered a recovery and on start up I am prompted for the recovery key

The solution I found was to install the previous version of the BIOS, but without being able to boot into Windows, I needed to install the previous version of the BIOS in DOS. Some server products provide a F12 boot up menu option to roll back a BIOS update, but this is not available in my Latitude.

I downloaded the correct BIOS version (the additional info section made specific reference to it being installable from Windows or DOS). I prepared a bootable USB key (to a dos prompt) and copied the bios installer executable to the memory stick.

Because secure boot (UEFI) is enabled, it is not possible to boot up from USB key, so legacy boot mode needs to be enabled. There were 3 settings that required changing in the BIOS before I was able to boot from the USB key.

Once I was able to boot into DOS from the USB key and got to the DOS prompt, I ran the BIOS update exe. The laptop rebooted, installed the previous BIOS version and then rebooted again. I pressed F2 to get into the BIOS and changed back the settings as they were (secure boot UEFI). I then managed to boot into windows without being prompted for the Bit locker recovery key.

You able to export or view the Bitlocker recovery key by going to Control Panel -> Security -> Bit locker Management, and temporarily suspend protection (until the next reboot). It is possible to run a commandlet to specify the number of reboots bit locker should be suspended for.

You may find that installing the previous version of the ... Read more

Am I insane?

Windows 8 Standard (not Pro or Ent)

I had Win8 early, maybe even beta or CTP via MSDN subscription. Anyway, I've been running it since then and have had great luck with it. On day 1 I put bitlocker on my USB drive (yes, it worked) and put EFS on key folders that held security related items. I fully realize that those features were not included in the marketing slide for the Win8 launch, but I always trust marketers as far as I can throw them.

Now fast forward to 2015, all my encrypted folders are now decrypted and my bitlocker drive is still bit-locked, but since I know the PIN I still have access to it.

Support thinks I'm certifiably insane, but I'm certain I enabled EFS and Bitlocker on Windows 8 Standard, while it was likely in beta or CTP. Did Windows update really just yank encryption out.

So my bitlocker drive is proof (not like court of law). I formatted it on day one. I did bitlocker stuff through the manage-bde script so I can never remember if the bitlocker control panel was ever really there (cuz its not now).

So... anyone have some non-win-updated Windows 8 machines to see if EFS and manage-bde work on? I'm less inclined to roll back the last 47 updates.

Hopefully not insane.

Dear around 3 years back I encrypted one of my laptop drive and couldn't remember the password or find the recovery key. But I have the recovery key identification. Is there any possibility that using my recovery key identification I can get the full recovery
key
p.s. I am still using the same laptop.
