Preferred Solution: Disk 1 Unknown mbr code

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I've been trolling the forums here for a while. Lots of great info but now I actually have an issue where I need some assistance.

When I was booting one day last week I got a nasty BSOD when Windows was trying to load. Then on the next reboot Windows 7 said it couldn't load and needed to do the recovery OS option from the Windows 7 repair on the CD. Well, before trying that I did a cold reboot and it got back into the OS fine so I didn't think much of it. Now, I noticed Ghost shows the C: drive status as "Unavailable" and it can't back it up anymore. It does give me an option to restore from one of my old backups. I'm thinking the MBR got hosed up somehow or something like that. But I'm skeptical to run an MBR repair since I have that 100MB partition on my SSD where my OS resides.

Ghost Shot>

This was about a week ago my Windows 7 started acting up right before the big patch Tuesday. I've been running it for over a year now and it's been solid. When I first set it up I installed it on my SSD (Intel 510 120GB) drive. One of the qualms I had with the install is Windows created a separate boot sector on the disk drive where it stored my boot files. This is known the the "system reserved" operating system files 100MB partition. Apparently the way to avoid this is to use a third party partition tool before doing the windows install. That way it will keep the Boot sector files on the same partition which is how I would of liked it for doing resto... Read more

I'm not sure if this forum supports Windows installed on a MacBook,
but I'd appreciate any help provided.

Regarding my laptop, it's a MacBook Pro bought around 2011,
witn Windows 7 x64 installed from my friend's disc.
(Sorry I cannot remember exactly what it was)
"Barely alive" condition.
Works fine, but suddenly shuts down at times, alert shows battery not inserted (UNDETACHABLE on this MacBook model), won't run without power adapter connected, immediately shuts down when inserting USB cable into 1 of the 2 USB ports, won't detect internet connection, and so on and so on......

That aside, it worked fine until last week.

I was running Windows Update when I accidentally insert USB cable into the wrong port and "forced shut down" the laptop.

When rebooted, I get a flash of BSOD and auto-restart, which leads to startup repair.

From there, I ran startup repair a few times, each time I get the successful result yet Windows still won't start.

Then I switched to Mac OS to use it for some urgent stuff.
While in Mac OS I did went around and did "repair disk" and stuff to the bootcamp.

Next I tried searching for solutions through my phone and did this and that on command prompt.
chkdsk bootrec etc etc tried all posted solutions to something similar to my case.

The next thing I realized was that I now cannot even choose "Windows" on boot and I got stuck.

Then I asked my neighbor and fortunately could borrow Window... Read more

I'm running Vista Ultimate 64 on a 500 Gig hard drive with 3 partitions. The problem is I marked one of the partitions, not Drive C, as "active" by mistake.I done a Command Prompt to make it "inactive", but when I started the system up again it wouldn't boot.I used the Vista disk for the recovery process, but I got a message "Operating system unknown on (unknown) local disk" i tried fixing the problem with a command prompt "bootrec/fix boot" ,but nothing happened. When I look at the info in Command Prompt it doesn't show the disk partitions, just Disk 0.Also I can't repair because no Disks are listed to be repaired. If I look at the drive in "My Computer" it is full with a file system marked as "Raw" and it wants me to format the drive.I used "Recover My Files" software and it shows some of the documents that are on the drive, but doesn't show any recovery.I looked at some internet post about the message I got and partition and boot problems like I have, but at this point I don't to try any else to make it worse.I would do a reinstall ,but on one of the drives I have some stuff that wasn't backed up.I never thought about backing it up because it wasn't on the C drive.Any help to solve this problem would be appreciated. ..........Kumpie

Answer:Operating system (unknown) on unknown local disk

Welcome!

Try marking the C partition as active again, using the Windows method in my post here.

Then run Startup Repair from the repair disc. Hopefully it will see your installation.

Hi,Bought a G510 running w8.1 in May.  After 3 months of untroubled use I started getting all of the above error messages and problems. Restored to factory image. updated bios and updated drivers problems still persisted, all hardware tests were fine. Contacted Lenovo, laptop needed to be shipped to Germany, from UK as it appears there are no facilities in the UK??, to be examined.  The solution... Lenovo replaced the hard disk. Laptop was working fine again until a couple of weeks ago (about 3 months elapsed since original repair!!)  and exactly the same problems have returned.  The joke is I dont even use the laptop seriously as I dont trust it, and it spends 99.9% of its life as an expensive web browser machine. Surely the drive hasn't failed again, are they really that bad, or does the real problem lie somewhere else? Either way I'm totally unimpressed, no doubt having to send the laptop off for another 10 day holiday in Europe. :-( Anybody got any suggestions whats happening here?  Many thanks

Hello,

I have run into a problem that has been causing me quite a bit of headache as of late. A week ago, my WD Elements External Hard Disk is not displaying under hard disk drives, but does display under Devices and Printers. This is what it shows under computer management:

I have tried to initialize the disk using MBR and GPT options but failed receiving I/O Disk Error.

Please help, thank you.

Question: MBR code (unknown)

I've got a feeling that there might be a sly virus located on the computer. I did a check with MBRCheck which I once used a couple of years back to rid myself of another virus. This time I noticed it show up "unknown" in yellow suggesting that the proper MRB code isn't in place. In addition, I have also very recently within the last week or so noticed that IE doesn't let me connect. I rarely use this and stick with Firefox, but that works fine. After checking the addons, I noticed that Avast was set to disable in regards to running protection, so I'm wondering if this is why something might have gotten through. Usually in FF, any site that has suspect viruses trying to get through, it will flag up automatically.

I have tried TDSkiller but it isn't showing anything either, and as I mentioned already, MBR Check gives me options to reset the MBR to a legit code but returns as unknown when repeating the process.

Below is the readout I get from MBRCheck. I'll run tests through anything else if necessary.

Thanks

Question: Unknown MBR code

Happy New Year Malware Fighters! I?ve not visited your site in a long time. I?m glad to see that good is overcoming evil at least somewhere in the world.

Now that I see all this MBR malware you are dealing with, I?d like to review my old, slow computer with you. When I saw MBRcheck being used, I ran it, and I?ve been puzzled by the unknown code in the MBR. The hard drive was new and had a fresh copy of Windows 98se installed (I did not have the eMachines recovery CD, also Win 98se) and then was upgraded to Win XP with an upgrade CD. So there never was a Win XP OEM MBR on this hard drive. I have been hoping some newer scan would come out and I could figure it out on my own and not have to bother you.

I want to make sure that the hard drive is safe to use again, either in the old computer or in another one. Am I right that formatting will not do anything to the MBR? I want to make sure this unknown code is nothing that will bother me in the future.

Attached are the logs this time around?yes, all out of date because all I am going to use to transfer files is a CD. This computer has not been turned on since 2010 and is not going to see the internet again. But the hard drive might.

Answer:Unknown MBR code

And the other logs.

I have a Logitech Wireless Mouse M325. USB dongle. I plugged it in and got a "device malfunctioned" error. I went to the Logitech website and downladed their 64-bit "SetPoint" software and ran it.  At first the mouse worked. But after about 10 minutes, Windows gave a message that the "device malfunctioned" and unmounted it.  When I look in the Device Manager, it shows it as Unknown USB Device (Device Descriptor Request Failed) and if I look at the driver details it shows it as being attached to a Microsoft driver.  Now that I've run the Logitech install software, is there a way of manually assigning the correct driver?  Thanks.

Answer:Unknown Device (Code 43)

Did a Logitech folder install on the hard drive? It likely contains the mouse driver but frankly it should work fine as a standard mouse using the generic Microsoft driver. The Logitech software just enables advanced features like side to side scrolling. Do you have any issues with any other usb devices? If not I am suspecting there is a problem with the mouse itself.

The memory test completes OK, the error message is then displayed, and the Boot Up stalls at that point. Any ideas or suggestions as to possible causes or fixes?NB. I am able to start the computer in Safe Mode. Many thanks,Richard.

Answer:128 - Unknown Error - Code 5 at start up

Code 5 The driver for this device requested a resource that Windows does not know how to handle. (Code 5)To fix this, click Update Driver to update the driver for this device. Solution button: Update DriverThis code indicates that there was a device failure due to the lack of an arbitrator. If a device requests a resource type for which there is no arbitrator, you receive this error code.To resolve this problem, update the driver as suggested, or use Device Manager to remove the device and then run the Add New Hardware tool in Control Panel.

Answer:unknown error code 9C47

How can I deal with this?
Check that you have the modules implied by the update and then, if so, hide the update, waiting for these WU/AU screwups hopefully to be fixed by a future cumulative security update.
Alternatively, you could try a hack like this (which presumably avoids WU/AU from making some incorrect assumptions about what level things are at)

So I've been looking through sites after sites, updating, downloading different software and drivers through the HP site AND the Windows 7 site, Uninstalling/Re-installing, Disabling/Enabling, and even restoring my computer multiple times...but to no avail, this unknown device problem will force me blow my brains out.

I already know that this Unknown Device (Code 43) is my webcam and it seems like there's some sort of malfunctioning going on. It's under the Universal Bus Serial controller and everything else is fine except one (the webcam). I've tried tinkering with it but I'm too scared to start opening up the laptop with the screwdriver.

Of course I've read most of the posts about this problem...but things aren't working out. The only thing that helped temporarily was shutting off the laptop, unplugging it, taking out the battery, then reboot. Everything seemed fine but when I tried to go on TinyChat, the problem appeared again. And I'm back to square one. The frustration that I'm experiencing right now is overbearing. I really need help!

I'm not sure i'm in the correct forum, but i have had a similar problem a while back that was addressed in this specific forum. If i'm not in the right room then can someone please direct me to the correct forum?

The problem
I've recently purchased a 3TB external Seagate HDD. I use the drive to store back up images and documents. When trying to delete a text file yesterday afternoon i saw an error message saying the file "was corrupted or unreadable and could not be deleted". i was able to remove everything i wanted to save from the external HDD and proceeded to reformat but was unable to do so and received a message saying "windows was unable to do so".

I decided to give MBRcheck.exe a chance as i recall using the scan a few months back to determine if the MBR was correct and the results showed that there was an unknown MBR code for this drive. i went ahead and ran TDSSkiller as well, just to be safe and it resulted in one medium risk file that was locked. i proceed to send to quarantine.

Is this a virus/malware issue or a hardware problem? If malware then i will follow through with the instructions and house cleaning, but i wanted to make sure i was in the right forum before i asked for guidance.

Thanks

Answer:Unknown MBR Code on External Seagate

If you suspect malware, you're in the correct area to get help

The first thing to try to rule out is hardware, if it's faulty then you'll have problems accessing the drive to check for malware. Try another USB, SATA or Firewire cable (whichever yours uses) and try the drive connected to a different port at the rear of the PC or to a different PC that is clean and fully secured with updated Antivirus.

I'm sure the experts here will be along later to give you further instructions on checking for malware.

I found that when I now turn on my Laptop it loads all the way to the Welcome page then the Desktop, but within 30 seconds no longer I get a blue screen and the following code.0x0000008e (0xc0000005, 0xf369ec86, 0xf2c33cb0, 0x00000000)This is the only reference to what can be wrong, and I have no idea what it means.Any help would be absolutley amazing.I am able to start up in Safe mode if that is any help? I have also started in Safe mode and been unsuccessfull in doing a system restore, it takes a long time and then states it was unable to restore.ThanksPaul

Okay, so, I am working in a retail enviroment, customer wants to buy a display model off the clearance rack. SOP is to do a full system reset before handing it over.. but it is acting a bit funny. This was not a powered-on display, as far as we knew it was a like-new system. From the start it makes a beep-code that I can't find anywhere online every time its powered up. 3 long beeps and 4 short ones. Initially our attempt at a factory reset stalled at 99% with an error code about something could not be accessed or other, but once I powered it down it looked as if the reset had completed, it was at windows 8.1 setup. I told the other tech (who was staying later than me) to take the windows 10 install media and run the upgrade, maybe the beep code was something to do with OS corruption, and we would find out in the morning if that upgrade did anything. However.. I want to find out for certain what this beep code is before we hand this computer over to a customer, because beep codes usually mean something hardware, and I don't want to hand over a faulty computer.

Hi

I tried installing a couple of updates today (I had to google them first in case they were nasty little bleeders that Microsoft just chuck out to people under false pretences or something - something they've been known to do). Well..I've never had this problem before, but when I check for updates, it connects sure enough and it tells me the updates are available, but I'm NOT getting the downloads. Instead I'm just getting the error code pop up "Code 800706B5" within the update window. Any ideas as to A) What the HECK it means, and B)how to get the darn thing to go away so I can get the updates I need?

Thanks for any help.

Answer:Code 800706B5 - unknown error?

What is the update that gives you the error?

bought used desk top, it has a very nice case, unit was custom built. owner did not affix windows sticker to case and lost the disk. is there a file on the computer that is storing the product key code so i don't have to buy a brand new o/s. reason I need the key is to get a replacement disc.system properties under windows activation: windows activated: product id: gives a # and beside it in blue says change product key. Why?

Answer:unknown windows 7 product key code

The only O/S you can upgrade to Windows 7 is from Vista, there is no upgrade from XP. It sounds like you bought a computer and did not get the legal license for Windows 7 with the purchase....hence no sticker. That is how many shady capers do it. Frankly if you want to avoid unnecessary tech costs etc......buy the Windows 7 full installation, not the upgrade and assuming your first hard drive is not defective...put the o/s there and keep your data on the 2nd drive. You will lose whatever was on the first drive when you do the install so back up the stuff before. I suspect you will get no where until you have a legal license copy with the sticker.

Hello. I am new to all this, so bear with me please. I paid a web development company to build a very important website. They have failed badly, and this is after one year has passed and little noticeable progress has been made. I assigned them the use of my domain name. They retaliated because of my complaints, and uploaded some sort of malicious code onto my domain name. My site was listed as an "attack site" by Google. When I would attempt to visit the site to inspect their work, it would take control of the browser, download some unknown (content) and then conclude with some sort of blank pdf type file. Each time I would attempt to visit the site, it would redirect me to some foreign domain name in another country... each time doing the same thing... installing something and then giving me a blank page. After that, my hard drive goes wild continuously, like it is now. What I do know for certain is that they did hack into my system via this method, becuase they accidentally provided me with a master file of all the (so-called development work, which was pirated from other jobs) which also contained image and video files that came from my system, with the same "modified date". I did screen shots of what occurs when I visit any of the malicious sites, and I have attached two of them.I just now went to the first URL below and did a Hijack This scan. If anyone has a test system and is brave enough, one of the working URL's that has the malicious code still ... Read more

Hello,

I did a fresh install of win 7 64 pro on my computer. All my drivers were updated fine except the "coprocessor". My motherboard: MSI K9N2 SLI PLATINUM nvidia nforce 750a sli chipset that was originally for windows vista.

I downloaded the new driver off MSI website for win7 64 for the chipset. When I try to install the driver I get a blue screen of death saying:

PAGE FAULT IN NONPAGED AREA....

0X050...nvsmv.sys

After that error i restarted the computer and the screen when crazy and displayed random colors and "(" characters everywhere lol.

Luckily I booted up again and I didn't have that problem any more but now it says "unknown device" instead of "coprocessor".

I'm not sure what to do any help would be great thanks.

I originally posted this issue here. http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic418366.html The problems with this computer began with an infection with the Security Protection virus. Malwarebytes, Spybot, and Ad-Aware were run to try to rid the machine of the problem. Now Malwarebytes will not run - it starts and then disappears. After that, trying to launch gives the error "Windows cannot access the specified device, path, or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item." During preparation for this post, I was also unable to get GMER to generate a log. It would run and then the window would simply disappear. I was able to generate the needed DDS logs. They are attached as requested.

I have a Dell Studio 1737 Laptop that ran fine and had no errors. The integrated web cam also worked
fine. After upgrading to Windows 7 64 bit from Windows Vista 64 bit I have a error in the device manager.

The error listing shows unknown device, and the says "Windows has stopped this device because it has reported problems. (Code 43)". I believe the error is due to the wrong driver. I think the unknown device
is the web cam, since there is no device manager listing. To verify it, I unplugged the web cam ribbon cable from the motherboard, and the bad entry...and error disappeared from the device manger, indicating all was fine now. On plugging the cable back in, the error returned.

I don't believe there is a hardware problem with the web cam, as it worked fine, prior to the upgrade.
I can find no "creative labs integrated webcam" 64 bit driver for windows 7 on dells website, or anywhere
for that matter. I tried using the vista 64 bit driver with compatibility settings, and it still didn't work.
I tried deleting, rescanning, rebooting, tried other incorrect drivers, on the device dozens of times with no luck. I've had a lot of experience dealing with device manager problems, but now I'm stuck.

Anyone have a Driver for Win 7 64 bit, or know any other ideas to try? Dells Driver listing for Win 7 64 bit
gives no listing for web cam.

Thanks,

Eric

Hello,

STOP 0x00000024 or NTFS_FILE_SYSTEM

A problem occurred within the NTFS file-system driver. A similar STOP error, 0x23, exists for FAT32 drives. The most likely cause is a hardware failure in a disk or disk controller. Check all physical connections to all hard disks in the system and run the Check Disk utility (Chkdsk.exe).

I found it on M$ easily. Search Results

hey guys,

Got an A200 m01 (i think) from around 2008, which just last night decided to not boot. It makes it past the BIOS screen, but then when about to boot Windows the screen turns off and it makes a continuous (and infinite) beeping (sort of pulsating). Now, I cant find anything on Insyde BIOS, but the common continuous beeping sound is a RAM error. I was hoping this would be the case (although I realise POSTing is completed before the BIOS splash screen appears and thus I am at a loss as to what it ACATUALLY is), but upon removing the one RAM module the system doesnt even give me a BIOS beep code! What the hell!

And no amount of googling has gotten me any closer to solving this. I'm a poor student so I cant afford to take it to a computer repairer for them to charge me $80 to say its dead, so if anyone has any information I will be very grateful!

Thanks

Taylor

Answer:Satellite A200 - Unknown beep code

Hi Taylor,

I think the problem is that only an authorized service provider knows the exact beep codes and their reasons so you can?t find much in the Internet.

Of course such a problem is a little bit annoying but you?re right, theoretically it could be a problem of RAM. As I understand you correctly just one RAM module is installed in your computer, right?
Have you already tested the module in another RAM slot? Theoretically the memory slot could be also faulty.

Furthermore you can test the RAM module itself using a special test software like Memtest86. It?s freeware tools that you can find with Google. Just create a bootable disk and boot from it. The test will start but it can take up to 1 hour or more until it?s finished.

Maybe Memtest86 will find something but let?s wait what happens so some feedback would be great. :)

I have the following updates that keep coming up but not installing: KB975960, KB974561, KB973704, KB973709, KB972581, KB973593, KB9774234 (? may have accidentally put an extra number in this one), and KB972363.

I have gotten the error listed in my topic title and this one: Error opening installation log file. Verify that the specified log file location exits and is writable.

I have been to microsoft's site and have tried several of their options, including several downloads that took a few hours to download which didn't help or also would not install. One was: Windows6.0-KB947821-v4-x86. It is on my desktop, but when I open it, it tells me: The update does not apply to my system.

The reason I even knew that I was having problems was my initial search for an explorer problem (it freezes, particularly if I do a google search and click on one of the search result links). I am not sure if these update problems are the source of the problem, but I figure I need to get this resolved if updates are not being accomplished.

Thank you! Adrienne

I believe I have been hacked and keep getting the above problems.
I ran a GMER scan which told me that i have an unknown MBR code (this has also been confirmed by other scans from Hirens Boot CD programs) the GMER scan also indicates c:/windows/system32/config/system cannot be accessed because it is being used by another program. similar messages come up with ntuser.dat
I have recently reset this computer (which is an Acer laptop 64bit running win8) and have only basic programs on it with 406g free of 449g hd, yet the pc is running incredibly slowly.
when i access disk management apart from the c drive which it tells me is simple: basic ntfs 449.14g there are three other drives all of which are simple: basic and no file system, one is a recovery partition of 400mg, another is the efi system partition of 300mg and there is another rcovery partition of 15.8g.
I have pasted the gmer readout below and below that the alternate stream view ntfs (which I have never setup - some of which may be legit but others of which I suspect are not)
I have a text file which is a report of some 9395 alternate streams on my computer about which i have no knowledge in terms of setting up etc but was unable to upload. if required can email or find another way of providing such information.
any assistance will be greatly appreciated
chris

I'm currently experiencing BSOD after playing a number of different games requiring large and small amounts of my PC. It happened to me a few weeks ago; then stopped for a while; and has just restarted today and can happen from any hour to every few minutes.

Hi guys I've been having problems with a next door neighbour who says he has hacked my pc. My wifi is always secured with an encrypted WPA2 password and I don't use WPS. I use windows firewall and eset nod32 antivirus.
Also I don't use any file sharing or anything like that and I don't open any weird emails yet I am convinced he is telling the truth and some how he has managed to "get in" to my pc through very clever means. According to another neighbor he has been to prison before for cyber crime activity yet he is allowed a pc.

Interestingly before the scan starts I get the message: C:\Windows\system32\config\system: the process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process

And then at the end of the scan I get this message: C:\Users\Garypc\ntuser.dat: the process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process

As some of you may recall, I have two different strings in this forum on the subject of Vista SP2 refusing to install, and as of this moment I never did get it to install in my laptop running on 32-bit Vista Home Premium. Finally, after four days of phone calls with MS Tech Support, who I am convinced were only guessing, they finally cleaned off the entire hard drive, then did a "clean install" of Vista (with no service pack). Vista still didn't work right, and finally after calling the laptop manufacturer (Dell) they got it done to where at least it functioned properly.

Hello all,

I have just build a new computer, I was able to install windows without issue and everything went smoothly, but when I was installing drivers for the MOBO and installing programs while configuring windows the machine would lock up and BSOD, each time giving a different reason. This is a brand new build so i would suspect that it is most likely either the MOBO came faulty or bad PSU? I already ran Memtest86+ and memory came up clean. Anyway I processed the dumps and here they are, if anyone is willing to take a look at this I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks in advance.

Answer:New Build, Multiple BSOD, Unknown error code

Various different bugcheck codes.

Test your RAM modules for possible errors.
How to Test and Diagnose RAM Issues with Memtest86+
Run memtest for at least 8 passes, preferably overnight.

If it start showing errors/red lines, stop testing. A single error is enough to determine that something is going bad there.

Install Service pack 1 and all other windows updates. Otherwise the system will remain vulnerable to threats.

Hi all,

I was browsing the web earlier today and got a random BSOD.
The first one I got was a Memory Management one, but a Crash Dump for this one does not appear in the Minidump folder.
After restarting my computer, I got a second BSOD about 3 minutes after logging in, This time it was a 0x07e error, and there was a Dump file.
Attached is the SF folder I got from using the SF Diagnostic Tool.
Please note, In the folder there are two dump files from 2012, these can be ignored, the one from 15/02/2013 is the one of concern.

Thanks.

Answer:BSOD Error Code 0x07e, Unknown reason

See if you can find an update for you Bios it is very old:

Code:
BIOS Version: American Megatrends Inc. 2102 , 17/06/2010
Next run memtest86+ for at least 8 passes:

RAM - Test with Memtest86+

Tip: do this overnight it will take a long time.

Hi guys, not sure where to post this so thought here will do.I just received an email about a security code for a random e-mail account I have never heard of.I'm trying to figure out how I could have ended up getting this e-mail and if this means I need to change my passwords. I got the below e-mail (Redacted some details)"Thanks for helping us verify the Microsoft account [email protected] is your code: XXXXXThis is a verification code, not a password. If you didn't request this code, someone else may know the password for [email protected] and have access to that account. Click here to change your password. Thanks,The Microsoft account team"The thing is, I don't recognize the email address its talking about and I'm worried if there is a possibility that someone is perhaps trying some kind of back door to get into my account. Given my hotmail account now ties in with my computer(On Win8), there is the potential someone could lock me out of my computers.Strangely, today I also received a notification from Steam to verify what e-mail account I use.So a little bit concerned at the moment. I moved my steam account to G-mail which I have already set up with 2 factor authentication, so that is nice and secure. But still worried about this email.Do I need to worry about this, Any advice as to what I could do to improve security for my Microsoft account?Mattwizz3

Hey all! ... I'm new here, but not to forum usage (in general ... I read the Welcome PM and Sticky threads ... ) ... I came in here because I found a fairly relevant thread by bbpathd1, who was guided to a successful resolution by one of your Admins, TimW (BTW, can I change the Linear sort order of Closed threads? I'd prefer to see the oldest at the top, not the bottom ... no biggie ...). I may not have a malware issue at all, perhaps just a ThinkPad-specific MBR idiosynchracy.

Back story: I've been trying to get a Lenovo R500 notebook PC running better than it was before being donated to me ... it's got a Windows Vista sticker on it but appears to have the entire ThinkVantage suite of programs installed on XP Pro SP3 32-bit ... it uses an Intel Centrino2 P8400 2.26GHz CPU and has 2.94GB of RAM, so, should run XP pretty snappily ... even fully updated ... all the way 'round.

It's always interesting to see what s/w a corporate tool is loaded with, and, what the user later loads and does to bring an OS to its' knees ... both with startup stuff and an impressive range of toolbars / malware / ect. ...

Anyways, I've got things pared down, cleaned up (I use AVG AntiVirus Free Edition 2015, Spybot - S & D 2.4, Malwarebytes Anti-Malware [Free] 2[.0.4.1028] & SpywareBlaster V5.0) and sorted out pretty well now, with one recurring exception ... where my PC familiarity is failing me ... after restarting, I keep running into the... Answer:Problem with PnP devices, Unknown device, error code:28

make and model of flash drive?
it shouldn't really need a driver, windows should recognise it as a mass storage device.
Can you try in in another machine? to check if the drive is corrupted.
USBdeview download run and uninstall any devices shown not connected this gets rid of conflicting errors in the registry.
when you plug in the device, windows should then reinstall it OK

Answer:BSOD - unknown error code computer restarted

Hi CarlsbergFTW.

I am guessing it is a new computer?

Code:
BiosReleaseDate = 04/19/2013
If it is a new one (Branded or custom build), all the hardware parts are under warranty. Use that benefit.

The issue you are having, Stop 0x124, is a hardware error; but which part of the hardware is failing is not clear. We need to check them individually to determine which is failing. So the best option is to make the supplier check it.

If you want the otherwise, let us know. We will suggest you the tests.

Hi all.  please see attached dxdiag for my system specs.  note that this is a big desktop PC

this morning i noticed a device in the device manger which isn't working properly. Normally  if it's not a major issue, i'd consider that sort of thing a silly nitpick.

However, i'm currently experiencing a major problem (which shall have its own thread, later), and i need to start eliminating possible suspects

i tried to research this little issue, and i found some steps that seem really good for major discrete components. unfortunately usb host controller is a generic entity, i'm not honestly sure if it even corresponds to any particular usb headers or external ports.

I've already tried the basic steps of disabling/enabling it, un/reinstalling the device, restarting the computer, leaving it powered off for five minutes, etc
:
anyways, details:

the device is listed under the Universal Serial Bus controllers section of the manager, as "Unknown Device"
When i open up the properties menu, i see the following info:
Device type: USB controllers
Manufacturer: (Standard USB  Host Controller)
Location: Port_#0001.Hub_#0003

Device Status: Windows has stopped this device because it has reported problems (Code 43)

going by instructions i found elsewhere, i was trying to hunt through the details tab for the hardware ID. Unfortunately that option only reports the value USB\UNKNOWN

Hello to anyone that may be able to help out. My issue is on a HP Pavilion Touchsmart 17 e147ca laptop. I have just recently done a clean install of Windows 10 Home 64-bit after having swapped out the old HDD due to failure and upgraded to a Samsung SSD. My system runs fine in general, boots fast with the SSD and all.. but there is this one nagging "Unknown device" in the Device Manager that I cannot rectify. I have been using a logitech C920 webcam for months on this laptop. Yesterday, I plugged it in and got an unknown device message. I reloaded the logitech software from their site. No change. I plugged the webcam into another laptop and it was recognized. I have tried a basic "clearing" of the system by powering down, unplugging the power and removing the battery then holding the "power on" button for 2 min.

Still getting a unknown device no matter which usb port I plug the webcam into.

Any suggestions?

NETIO.sys is a microsoft provided driver, and it cannot be the real cause of the crash. But it indicates some network blockage. Some unsuitability .... but what may cause it?

A deeper look at the latest crash dump reveals it:

Hey folks,

I have a laptop computer that is built by Sony and the model is a VAIO VGN-NW225F laptop computer running Windows 7 Home Premium edition SP1.

When I attempted to check for updates in this machine, it gives me an error saying that it "could not check for updates automatically". In addition, it gives me an error code of 80073712.

I've checked that computer for spyware/malware - but there was none. I also defragged the hard drive, but the problem persisted.

I've tried to do the SFC scan, but when I attempt to do that scan (and this was ran under administrator), the error message pops up saying that "Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation".

Although I didn't run the SFC scan under "safe mode" (yet), I wanted to know how can I fix this problem from re-occurring?

Hi everybody,
I recently inherited an unused PC from work. It's an Optiplex 780 with a faulty power supply.
I replaced the power supply with a working one from an old Optiplex 740 and also had to buy an standard ATX 24 pin to mini ATX 24 pin cable in order to use the 740' PSU in my Optiplex 780.
I have plugged in the power cord (but no mouse & keyboard because I don't have any USB keyboard available) and I expected the computer to show DELL logo as well as on screen POST messages during power up but instead I can see the following :
1) Power button in orange color. No blinking. : according to service manual it means PSU is probably OK and PC has reach booting stage 2.
2) 1,2 & 4 green diagnostic lights are on. This combination (1,2,4) is not listed in service manual so I have no idea on the possible kind of error.
Any suggestions about the possible error and how to fix it?
Kind regards,
Beltrixx
(Manel)

Answer:Optiplex 780 - unknown diagnostic light code 1,2,4 plus orange power button

Hello!  I would unplug everything go into the computer and unplug any cards you have like graphics card and network cards etc. Also unplug your HDD and Optical Drives and plug them all back in and see if that clears it.  I looked at the manuals you did and just combined 1,2 and just 4.

Hi

Install the Intel chipset driver.
If you will not find any on the Toshiba driver page then I recommend searching on Intel page directly.

As I?m not mistaken it?s a *Mobile Intel PM45 Express Chipset*

I really apologize for the vague title, all I can say about these BSOD's are that they've occurred with increasing frequently over the past week, and are seemly random. I have noticed that they happen more often whenever Shockwave crashes in Chrome and does not recover. I've also noticed that I get a BSOD whenever I attempt a full scan using Spyware Doctor. Otherwise, these BSOD's really just happen wherever, whenever.
My laptop is about 3 years old, I've never reinstalled the OS, which came full retail when I bought the laptop and I run Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit.
Thank you very much, everyone, and Happy Christmas!

These were Related to PCTSD64.sys PC Tools SD Driver from PC Tools. I would remove it at least to test.
Also

Please remove any CD visualization programs such as Daemon Tools and Alcohol 120%.

They use a driver, found in your dmp, called sptd.sys, that is notorious for causing BSODs.

I believe i was attacked with a virus that messed up my OS booting. The Blue screen pops instantly after the attack. I restarted and the Blue Screen pops up again. I tried to load it with the settings that worked and the blue screen came up once again. I tried safe mode as well and still no change, same blue screen. As usual I thought a reformat would do the trick.I booted with my winxp cd and wanted to reinstall a fresh copy and i saw

Unknown Disk
(there is no disk in the drive)

Unknown Disk
(there is no disk in the drive)

I restarted the comp and rebooted with the cd and i ran the Repair Console
I typed in fixmbr to fix the issue. But the same Unknown Disk was still there when i tried to reinstall again. I did a chkdsk with Repair Console and the ' The Volume appears to contain one or more unrecoverable problems' msg appears.

I'm lost with what to do now

I reconnected my external to another port, and that went fine, but this locall disk q remains, and can not be accessed, changed, removed, etc. I scanned for virus's, and all seems ok. How can I remove this, and where did it come from?

Hi, My DVD Recorder died, so I took out the HDD Seagate DB35.2 and plugged it in my laptop. I get the above message in disk management. I also tried Knoppix 7.0 but the disk does not show up. My scope is to save the content in the disk and move it to my PC, is it a mission impossible? Any suggestion is very welcome. Thanks Alex

Answer:Disk 1 Unknown, Not Initialized

I'm not sure you will have much luck if the disk is not readable. You can usually use a Linux distro to try to read it, but you've tried that. If it can be read you can also try Copy & Paste - in Windows Recovery Console. Other than that you could try Recuva and see if that will work. But, if the disk can't be read, I'm afraid there is nothing you can do if those 3 options don't help.

Hi, thanks for reading this and thanks for your help.

My laptop took a fall and after that it doesnt enter the boot sequence for windows, stops at the laptop manufacturer logo.

I remove my hdd from the laptop and put into a external drive i keep for this purpose, checking hdd?s.

I can?t find the drive in my computer but I can see it in disk managment. It says Disk unknown - not initialized.

I?ve tried using PW but i cant see the drive on there. I would really like to keep my files I have on that drive but it seems to me that it toast.

Regards...

That is bad news mate. Usually a mechanical HDD won't survive physical shock like dropping etc. This is because of the microscopical gap between the head and platter. Heads flying height on modern HDDs is about 5-10 nano-meters. For example: an average human's hair is about 25000 nano-meters in diameter. A drop will most likely cause the head to stuck on platter or cause scratches on platter surface.
I would suggest diagnosing the HDD using "Seagate Seatool" and verifying it's health.

SeaTools for Windows | Seagate
Run the tool and select your external HDD for testing. Then choose "Basic Tests --> Shot Generic" and wait for it to finish.

If the test is a pass, run "Basic Tests --> Long Generic". If either of the test fails, the case will be beyond DIY and you should consult a data recovery pro for recovery.

Hi Admin,

I'm also facing the same like the rest of em with My WD 1TB external HDD, whenever I connect it, the computer recognizes it's being plugged in, however it doesn't appear in My Computer. When I go to Disk Management it comes up as "Disk 1, Unknown, Not Initialized".

I tried with the Partition Wizard mentioned earlier in the post, but seems it takes lot of time. Data inside the drive doesn't matter for me. If i get it formatted that would help.. kindly advise on how to proceed further.

Also am not seeing the option, New Simple Volume when selected the Unallocated drive.

If Initialize disk is to be done, what partition type has to be selected "MBR or GPT"

Please Help !! Thank you !!

Answer:WD Passport HD 1 TB disk 1 is unknown

Welcome onboard.

( I am not Admin but still usurp their address to address this query)

Initialise it as an MBR disk. Only more than 2TB drives need to be GPT disks.

I turned on my computer the other day and it decided to run a checkdisk. No problems, everything was fine. HOWEVER, the next time I rebooted, it said that there was a computer software problem and the exact error was "load dlls for kernel", please contact your support person for assistance. Now, every time I boot up, I get this error. It doesn't matter how I boot up, (safe mode, last known good config, normal) I get this error. I saw on the web that the fix action was to run the XP install CD and do a repair, so I tried that; BUT...when I run the CD, it says, "unknown disk" where it normally lists my partitions and it won't let me continue past there. If anyone can please help me, it would be HUGELY appreciated as all of my children's photos since birth are on this hard drive!!! PLEASE HELP!!!

Answer:Please Help - Hard Disk Unknown

For starters, I'd suggest booting (typically you hold down the Delete key during power up) into your CMOS BIOS and make sure the BIOS sees your drives. Could be somehow the BIOS got corrupted and needs to be re-config'd.

Hope this helps get you going.

Hello guys! I'm having a problem installing windows XP on one of my computers and it's starting to get annoying. I tried to install windows XP from the CD and i got this error when it asks me too chose the partition or something: 4 unknown disk (there is no disk in this drive) messages. If i press the up arrow i get a blue screen, if i press enter i get blue screen!

Weirdest thing is, i installed ubuntu on it and it worked. It was running windows before, just so you know! ;)

The HD i'm installing it to is the samsung sp1614c. I don't have any drivers for it, in case you're wondering, nor my computer has floppy drive :|

Has anyone experienced this problem? Thanks for you help guys! :)

Answer:Installation error - unknown disk

Does this happen when you try and select a partition to install to? I am assuming yes.

The drive you have appears to be a SATA drive. As setup loads you should see at the bottom a prompt to press a key if you need to load 3rd party SATA or RAID drivers. You will need to follow that prompt to load the drivers for your SATA hard drive. That should work.
