I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Microsoft today said it will deliver a single security update on Tuesday to patch just one vulnerability in Windows.

However, the company acknowledged that it does not yet have a fix for a crippling bug in Windows 7 that went public nearlytwo months ago. The expected update will patch a vulnerability rated "critical" --

Microsoft's most serious rating in its four-step scoring system -- in Windows 2000. The bug also affects Windows XP, Vista and Windows 7, as well as Windows Server 2003, Server 2008 and Server 2008 R2, but is tagged as "low" for those editions.

Microsoft downplayed the threat even to Windows 2000 users. "The Exploitability Index rating for this issue will not be high, which lowers the overall risk," said Jerry Bryant, a Microsoft security spokesman, in a post to the company's security
response center blog today. Date: 7 January 2010

Microsoft will Issue a Critical Patch Next Week for Windows 7 IE8

Microsoft is expected to release a security patch to address a Critical vulnerability in IE8. For December, Microsoft is planning to release six new security bulletins that are expected different vulnerabilities in several Windows products. Some of the vulnerabilities are in Windows7, some in Internet Explorer 8, and some in Microsoft Office Products. On the office side the vulnerabilities affect Project, Word, and Worlks 8.5.

Microsoft Security Response Center
There is a range to the bulletins including three that are Critical and three that are considered Important. The Microsoft Security Bulletin Summary for December 2009 outlines these vulnerabilities:
Vulnerabilities in Internet Authentication Service Could Allow Remote Code Execution
Vulnerability in Microsoft Office Project Could Allow Remote Code Execution
Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explore
Vulnerabilities in Active Directory Federation Services Could Allow Remote Code Execution
Vulnerability in Local Security Authority Subsystem Service Could Allow Denial of Service
Vulnerability in WordPad and Office Text Converters Could Allow Remote Code Execution
Proof of Concept for the security flaws was released to the public recently, which prompted Microsoft?s response. In computer security the term proof of concept is often used as a synonym for a zero-day exploit which, mainly for its early creation, does not take full advantage of some vulne... Read more

Hi, if you click the large button on the left hand side at the top of the screen, a panel will open and it enables you to use various options such as print, email, etc; well one of the items in question i wish to refer to is the save button. when I click this option it has a list of all my past docs that I have made, can you please enlightem me as to how I can delete them, and for future also? thank you.

Answer:Deleting saves in Microsoft 2007 word doc

Just delete the original document from wherever you have it saved, it is only listed as you have recently opened it.
If you just want to delete the history or change the amount of Docs displayed. Try this.

Open office 2007 click on Office button, then Word Options.
Then the advanced tab, scroll down to the Display section, then Show this number of Recent Documents.
Setting this number to 0 will clear the list. You can then reset the
number if/as desired.

Microsoft is reportedly putting the finishing touches on the Windows 10 Anniversary Update, which is slated to arrive on August 2. The report comes from Windows Central, saying that build 14384 should be the first RTM (release to manufacturing) build.

The company has begun the sign-off process for the build, which means that it will put a variety of builds through internal tests, and then it will pick the best one for a public release.

According to the report, Insiders can expect to see a final build by the end of next week. The timeline isn't surprising. With the Anniversary Update less than a month away, we should certainly be in the polishing phase.

The fate ofWindows phones that are ineligible for the Anniversary Update is still undetermined. Such unsupported devices have had a sort of "upgrade at your own risk" option through the Release Preview ring. These users will be unable to install the Anniversary Update, but it's not clear if build 10586 will remain available for them.

The report also states that the Redstone 2 (Rs2) builds that Microsoft is compiling are in the 148xx range, and should begin shipping to Insiders in mid-to-late August. The Redstone 2 update isn't slatedto arrive for the public until April, 2017.

Last week I built a PC for a friend with a lot of help from people at [H]ardforum. Here is the build:
http://hardforum.com/showpost.php?p=1036262848&postcount=6

When I gave him the PC a week ago, it was working great. Windows cold boot-up was ~30 seconds, and shutdown was ~3 seconds. All the programs worked fine and as far as I could tell there was no problem with the system. That is, until he installed Microsoft's updates earlier this week. The update appears to have really done a number on his PC. It wouldn't load the OS, and he attempted to fix the problem but was unsuccessful.

I asked him to write out what happened to I could post it here (he uses Gmail). This is what he wrote:

A couple of days ago he informed me that following Windows updates of Office 2007 Service Pack 2, his machine wasn't able to boot past the Windows startup screen. He first tried repairing it, then restoring it to the point before the update - that's actually how he was able to identify the update causing the problem. Then, after identifying the update, he could no longer restore the PC. From that point he tried reinstalling Windows 7 from the DVD. However, the install was only partially successful, in that the PC rarely reaches the desktop and usually gets stuck at startup. When he tried to boot to safe mode, he found that it gets stuck at the Classpnp.sys file. Now he is not able to get into safemode, nor is he able to get onto the desktop. He is wondering if it's ... Answer:Built computer for a friend last week; Windows updates this week ruined boot-up

Reset the CMOS, that may sort out the PNP issue. Maybe not though.

I've had similar problems with one of my machines (my sig rig) but not another (my HTPC) so I don't know what the important factors are. The issues with my sig rig sorted themselves out eventually after a month or two ignoring the updates and not letting them install. I can't recall which ones proved the issue for me, but I also had to do quite a few system restores over that period.

Best of luck.

Weird question BUT...I am having trouble reverse cross referencing a printer cartridge to get a printer model number. The reason...At work the HR mgr. and her assistant were clearing out an office and saw me cutting through the lobby and yelled ANDY!!! Do you want these??? I looked and immediately said YES!!!
I scored a dozen or more cartridges of Hi yield ink. All 4 colors And I am having a hard time finding model numbers to fit the cartridges~
They are all Lexmark
4ea C540H1KG Black High Yield Return Program
4ea C540H1MG Magenta
4ea C540H1YG Yellow
4ea C540H1CG Cyan
I also got these
1ea 801HK Black High Yield
1ea 801HY
2ea 801HC
I want to buy a printer that uses the 540 cartridges I figure they will last me the rest of my life!!!

Perfect timing too...the printer we have just ran out of ink so I think it's time to shop~~~
I know it's kinda like trying to find a car to match a radiator cap you found but ink is expensive~ USUALLY...my wife will go to Walmart and buy a clearance printer INSTEAD of buying new ink cartridges!!! SERIOUSLY~~~

Thanks folks!!!

Ok. A friend of mine works for the Town of Fairfield in Connecticut where I live. He called me this morning and asked me if i'd be interested in coming down to one of their garages where they are storing hundreds of PC's that the town of Fairfield will be discarding.

I guess the town just upgraded all of their city office buildings with new PC's and they are just going to throw away the old ones. The great thing is all of the PC's are in some kinda shrink wrapping.

I'm not too sure what type of PC's or really anything about them, they might be all piece of junk with all old technology, but who knows? I'm meeting my friend at the garage tomorrow A.M to see what there is. Even if I can grab 20-30 of them, I might be able to salvage some components.

Have SP3 users had any experiences with the recent patches they can share?

Hi,

Well, I was doing homework yesterday and doing research on the net etc. Everything was fine. Then alls a sudden my comp froze up and I had to reboot.

When my comp came back on it didn't do the regular scan disk, it went straight to desktop. Then instantly I got a can't find oleaut.dll msg.

I tried to open firefox, didn't work and I got the "cant find oleaut.dll msg"

Every program I tried to open wouldn't open and came up with that msg.

I tried to reboot to DOS and it said "you can't reboot to DOS that is restricted, contact system administrator" Everything I tried to do was "restricted"

I saved files from another computer onto a disk to run on my comp (spybot, hijack etc.) they wouldn't open either.

So I can't open programs. I can't boot to dos (at least not that way) and I don't know a ton about computers enough to go in and do it all through run commands. What can I do?

I CAN open windows explorer, and internet explorer but when I try to go to website it won't work. I tried windoctor and all that, they did nothing.

I downloaded oleaut32.dll, and I made a floppy bootdisk...

Sigh.

Answer:Yeah..think I hit the jackpot of hijacks...help

Do you have your Win98 installation CD? If you have that, and can get the "run" command line, typing sfc on the command line will open a powerful restoration application called "System File Checker" (thus the sfc command). With this application you can find and restore altered, corrupted, or deleted files, and get running once again. If and when you get this done, you should still visit our "Security-Hijack this" forum, to find and remove the nasty spyware/malware applications that caused all this in the first place. If you don't have the CD, look in the Windows directory of your hard drive for a folder named Win98 or Options/cabs. If the /cabs files are on the drive, then you can name this directory when asked for the CD. The utility will restore files from this directory. You can restore from floppies, but if it involves lots of files, it's going to take a long time, and a lot of patience.

Microsoft could be ready to release Windows Vista to manufacturing as early as next week, a milestone that would signify the end of a protracted development process.

It could also set the company on a course to launch the operating system at the huge International Consumer Electronics Show, where Chairman Bill Gates is scheduled to deliver the opening keynote Jan. 7.

"9 Days Until Vista RTM!!!" read a scrolling electronic reader board in a building on Microsoft's Redmond campus Monday. If the countdown is correct, it would mean Microsoft plans to release Vista to manufacturing (RTM) on Oct. 25, earlier than analysts expected.Click to expand...

Black Hat A startling percentage of the world's automated teller machines are vulnerable to physical and remote attacks that can steal administrative passwords and personal identification numbers to say nothing of huge amounts of cash, a security researcher said Wednesday.
At the Black Hat security conference in Las Vegas, Barnaby Jack, a security researcher with IOActive, demonstrated attacks against two unpatched models from two of the world's biggest ATM makers. One exploited software that uses the internet or phone lines to remotely administer a machine made by Tranax Technologies. Once Jack was in, he was able to install a rootkit that allowed him to view administrative passwords and account PINs and to force the machine to spit out a steady stream of dollar bills, something the researcher called ?jackpotting.?
?It's time to give these devices an overhaul,? Jack told a standing room-only audience during day one of the two-day conference. ?There hasn't been a secure development methodology from the get go. The simple fact is companies who manufacture the devices aren't Microsoft. They haven't had 10 years of continued attacks against them.?
In a second attack against a machine from Triton Systems, Jack used a key available for sale over the internet to access the model's internal components. He was then able to use a install his rootkit by inserting a USB drive that was preloaded with the malicious program.
Both Triton and Tranax have patched the vulnerabilities that were... Read more

Hello all,

I am new to Microsoft Project 2007 and have a question regarding how this software defines a work week.

I have created a new calendar that is a 6 day work week and 60 hours a week for a project that I am working on. Thus, I know how to change the working time, the default work week, and under the "options" tab in the "change working time" menu I have changed the defaults to match what my calendar has for starting and ending times, etc.

My question is since I have changed the work week to start on Monday, if I start a task on a Monday and assign it a duration of 1 week, the task does not end until the next Monday. Since I have defined a 6 day work week, a week to me seems like it would be 6 full working days, and if it started first thing Monday it would end at the time I assigned on Saturday as the close of work. If I assign the task a duration of 0.98 weeks it ends on the Saturday that I wish it would end on, it does in fact end on Saturday.

If you change the view to "calendar" a task that starts on a Monday and has a duration of 1 week, or any round number of weeks, will continue through all Sundays and into Monday at the time that I set work to start on Monday.

How do I make a week in my situation last only 6 working days? (IE how can I start a task that will take one week, start on a Monday and have it end on Saturday at the close of business?) Obviously tasks that are constrained to start directly after this task that end o... Read more

Answer:Microsoft Project 2007 Work Week Defiition

Just to clarify, if you have a task with the Project standard calendar with a duration for 1 week and start it on a Monday, it will finish on that weeks Friday. If you then assign a task that is start to finish constrained to the first task, it will start on the next Monday after the first task finished the previous Friday. My problem is that since I changed the calendar, the tasks run through the non working days and up to the start of business to the next day.

Thanks

Microsoft has finally revealed the finished EU Browser Ballot Screen, and it?s set to begin rolling out next week. Microsoft came under fire last year from the EU about shipping Windows 7 with Internet Explorer pre installed. They had threatened to ship Windows 7 without a browser at all, but then came to their senses

Answer:Microsoft Browser Ballot Screen Revealed Coming Next Week

Microsoft today said it will deliver six security updates Tuesday, less than half the number it issued last month, to fix flaws in Windows and Office.
The updates will patch a total of 15 separate vulnerabilities, Microsoft said in a follow-up entry to its security response center's blog.
"Six is the lucky number this month," said Andrew Storms, director of security operations at nCircle Network Security. "Really, anything less than 13 is a lucky number."

Microsoft's Free Anti-Malware Beta to Arrive Next Week

For those of you not wanting to pay $50 a year for anti-virus / anti-malware protection, a beta version of Microsoft?s Security Essentials will be out early next week. The service will be free and remain free even after the beta period is over. I?ll guinea pig it for you and try it out when it is available and tell you how it is.

Microsoft announced in November that it was dropping its Live OneCare service in favor of a slimmed-down free offering designed to encourage more people, particularly those who don't want to pay for it and fear it will slow down their computer, to use antivirus software.

where does 'Windows Update' saves its downloads?

For example, I've used windows update service to selected a patch about 'computer fails when connected to a UPS'. It was downloaded and installed successfully. But I failed to find the downloaded file in my local machine. I need to save copies of such patches for later use, in case of a disk format or fresh windows install.

In that particular example, I have managed to get the name of the file: Q310437_x86.exe, which is a 161k file
so I seached my disk, only to find that the only file similarly named is called: Q310437_X86.EXE-036F9854.pf , a 12k file, and it was saved in folder: C:\WINDOWS\Prefetch

So what does that mean?
does windows delete downloaded update patches after installing them? are these .pf files just a history file telling windows what updates exist in a machine's system?

If so, can that behavior be prevented, so that download patches stay and dont get deleted automatically?

I have one folder in which I keep all my music. There are 605 items, consisting of both folders and music files.
I sort the folder by "date last saved" so that my newest songs are always at the bottom and the oldest are at the top, after the sub folders

However, whenever I open the folder, windows seems like it is re-searching and rebuilding the cache, taking upwards of 5 seconds in order for the folder to be sorted again.

This only started happening after I reinstalled windows, however that is all that has changed. My music is on another drive, the same drive that it was before I reinstalled.

Why does it keep doing this, and how do I get it to remember how it is sorted?

Attached is a video demonstrating what happens

Answer:Windows nevers saves a folder's settings

You might try going to Control Panel - Folder Options - View tab - Reset Folders - apply - okay
This should effectively reset all folder settings on the system and clean up the registry entries associated with them. Folder View - Reset All Folders
The down side is you will need to reset everything but the settings should then start working properly again.
open the folder again let it resort and then restart the computer (just as an extra measure to get the folder settings saved)

Windows 98

Does anyone know what the problem with a computer would be if it is doing the following

When you run HJT it runs fine and does what it is suppose to do, However, when you go to save a backup like at first when you save the file I save it to the HJT file I have, and then when the next box pops up where you can save it to the desktop or a floppy or whereever the windows 98 won;t save it right. I click save as and I always save a copy to the desktop and then I can put it on a floppy or what ever I want. It always saves as a txt file. This windows 98 computer saves it as an Internet explorer file like when you save a website, the file has the big blue e on it. That is the way it saves it, it does not save it as a txt file. What is wrong and why would it do that? I have never run into this problem before. Can someone explain?

One more question

I dont have the whole HJT Log cause like I said it wouldn't save and the compuiter is not at my house, I also wanted to no, there was an 013 line in the HJT Log.

013 preview http://
I read that if it was preview http:// and then some other stuff it would be coolwebsearch on your computer to get rid of it but this one just ends with the http://
that is the default for windows however I have not seen it in a HJT Log before. So is it alright to leave it?

I have an Alienware computer.  Every program I download and try to run goes to Windows Media Center.  All of them!!!  I have tried to restore the system and that didn't help.  I have deleted programs and reinstalled them to no avail.  I am not sure what the problem is, but I have no clue how to even start to fix this.  Anybody have any suggestions?

Answer:Windows 7 Saves Every Program As A Windows Media Shortcut

Go HERE and download the appropriate file for your system......32bit or 64 bit..    Read the page this link takes you to....

To use FixExec to fix your file associations, simply download the 32-bit version of the program or the 64-bit version to a location that you have write access to. A good location to download this file is your Windows desktop. Once the file is downloaded, simply run the program, accept the license, and let it go to work. The program will first terminate any programs that are launched from locations that are known to be used by Malware. It will then repair your .bat, .exe, and .com file extensions so that these types of programs can launch again.
If you attempt to run FixExec.exe and the program is quickly terminated or you receive an alert from a computer virus, simply rename the FixExec.exe file to FixExec.com. In order to properly rename the file you must make sure you have Windows configured to view file extensions. To enable this, please follow the steps in this guide:

How to show File Extensions in Windows

For quick access to some renamed versions of FixExec you can use the following links:

Our call center has two monitors that display 3 windows: a log, our call queue, and powerpoint slides. Before all we had to do was lock the PC at night and when I'd come in the morning, unlock and my windows would stay in tact. Someone felt that things shouldn't be so easy for me and in the event I'm absent, they would have to reboot the PC in order to login... which is inconvenient for them the <1% of the time I'm on PTO... So now when I come in, I get to log into the workstation, then fiddle with all the windows until everything fits just perfectly.

This logging in/out process probably wont be changed any time soon, so I'm wondering if there's a program/script out there that can first open applications (already have a batch file in place for this), and/or arrange them accordingly.

Answer:Software/script that saves the position & size of windows

Miracle program... it does have a couple issues on 64-bit Windows though.

I have never experienced this symptom before: exactly one week ago, after reinstalling everything, as if timed, my computer crashed again after one week of use.

Here is my system makeup Quad Q6600 @ 2.4GHz, P5N-E SLI, with two SLI-ed nVIDIA 8600GT, 4GB RAM Corsair CM2x1064-6400C4 (4-4-4-12), 500GB SATA WD Caviar under WinXP 32bit.

After a about one week (of stability) the system started crashing and become unstable to the point where it would reset (blue screen) every 5min.

Updated the BIOS & reinstalled everything under WinXP 64bit in a second partition (basically left WinXP32bit in one partition with dual boot) and exactly one week thereafter the same symptoms are now happening.

Could it be my RAM as a week ago when I started to get blue screens at one point after resetting itself a couple of times the PC started issuing 20 sec long beeps without restarting. I removed the RAM and had it reseated. Also under the latest BIOS I had it set to 4-4-4-12 for RAM and slowed it down from 800Mhz to 677Mhz.

I now have the feeling that my HDD is at the source of the problem with a bad sector.

Anyone had this kind of symptom http://images.techguy.org/icon/icon6.gif
Cool?

Any feedback is extremely appreciated!
Cheers!
Chris.

Hi

Have had Windows since 29th July, so going on for a week now. For some reason it now wakes from sleep in an instant (2 or 3 seconds) instead of 90 seconds. It is only in the last couple of days that I have got this welcome speed up from sleep. I haven't adjusted anything, so it must be something it does as I use it more.

Once it does all the maintenance chores all gets settled down and so speed up most things. Prefetch/ superfetch fills up, disks get defragmented, icon and picture caches are written and memory optimizes, Defender checks everything and doesn't do it all over again. Now if some damn update doesn't screw something up (knock on wood) !!!
If you use it and let it stay on first couple of days, things should slide in their place quicker.

I just purchased and installed Spyware Doctor. After running it the first time there were 3 issues it could not clean. Two of the three were Rootkit.agent and Trojan.vundo. Upon reboot (and every boot since), windows starts up, asks for my logon, applies my personal settings and them immediately goes to saving my settings. The system them returns to the log-on screen. The same events happen in safe mode. I can boot and get into Windows using a WINTERMINAL disk in my CD drive, but i really don't know what do to from this point. When I try to double-click or run Spyware Doctor, it says there are files missing. Please help!

Answer:Windows logs me on, applies settings, then auto saves settings

Welcome to Major Geeks!

First I recommend that you not attempt to run Spyware Doctor anymore since it seems to have been what cause you this problem with logging in. This is about the 3rd time in the last couple days someone has mentioned this issue and each time it was after running Spyware Doctor. To that end, I would ask do you have a log from Spyware Doctor. It may default to saving a log somewhere. I believe they used to save files in as XML (which is not a good idea in my opinion).
Please try to follow the instructions in the below link and attach the requested logs when you finish these instructions.

During this week we have built and reloaded a total of 10 systems.  8 of those computers were built or loaded on the 9th (Patch Tuesday).  After doing the updates, we can no longer do updates or install Microsoft Security.  2 of the 10 was were installed and updated 12/10 - They update and work as they should.

I have attempted to roll back with no luck.  We are in the process of formatting and reinstalling 2 of the systems to test.  Anyone have an clue as to what updates caused this issue.

There has been a fair amount of confusion as to when, how and who gets Windows 10 when it releases tonight. Tuesday night, July 28th at Midnight, Microsoft officially releases Windows 10. We know the software will roll out in various stages starting with Windows Insiders and then moving to preorders. The whole idea is to make sure that everything goes smoothly by being able to address any issues with the release early on if any problems are reported by Insiders.

Answer:Windows 10 Release Week Is Here

I installed Win10 from a dvd just to take a look, but I'm not planning to change over from Windows 7. Anyone know if I will be able to reuse the image I have for Windows 10 after the rollout date?

I tried the upgrade with the disk, but it kept stalling and then it would stop with some error, so I just did a clean install finally. I remember using the evaluation key that was there on the download page to complete the installation...

Lots of questions about this rollout, since the upgrade is completely free and all. I guess there will be a ton of attention to details this time. I wonder if MS will allow for a dual boot W10/W7 where the user gets to keep the validation status of the W7 installation (or maybe 7 or 10 in a VM?)...

First it started with our internet modem going out a few night back, couldnt get it to work for anything until i reinstalled that and redid my router. a few days later we realized there was a "virus" on our computer we did everything we could to get it off to no avail. Eventually we did a recovery (put it back to the factory settings) which didnt work either. We had to do that NUMEROUS times to be able to finally use the computer. it went from bad to worst to just bad again. Ive tried anti virus softwares/malware everything i could think of. eventually someone at microsoft told me to install tdsskiller, which didnt find anything. someone else told me to malwarebytes.org, another one said hitman pro 3.5, and etc NOTHING IS WORKING!!!!

i have Avg free 9.0 installed now which was able to find the viruses before but cleaning them out didnt work either. now none of the anti virus programs can find the trojans at all. except Hitman Pro gave me, "Possible variant of the TDL3 (Alias Alureon) rootkit detected", but im still left with not being able to update windows.

yesterday i manually installed service pack 1 and 2 which made the pc work better but still didnt fix the problem. a few days before that i started getting a popup from microsoft that said "Host process for windows services, stopped working and was closed -- A problem caused that application to stop working correctly. One workstatation and our Exchange Server have both gone down this week while I am away

The symptoms are:
Will not load
Try safe mode and the files are loaded but it does not proceed
Using Win CD and recovery console there is no windows to load

Workstation is XP on recent 64bit motherboard although the disk is older
Server is 2003 Standard on P4 motherboard about 3 years old. Disk is a SCSI raid with 3 drives making a single disk split into 2 partitions

Obviously I can rebuild systems but wondered if anyone else is seeing this happening or it is just a coincidence that we have lost 2 in a week.

I recently returned home after a 10 day trip and when I turned my computer back on it would not boot/open at all.I have a dual-boot setup running Win8.1 and Win7 Pro. The default OS is Win8.1, and -- as a matter of fact -- I probably haven't even opened Win7 for almost a year. Before I left all was working fine, I just did a full shutdown and turned everything else off. After a long time staring at the usual logo and the spinning wheel, I got the message about "Automatic Repair" That ran overnight with no results, so I did a hard restart and eventually got to a message saying "Diagnosing your Computer"That screen also did not change after many hours. At one time while fiddling with this I got the option to restore to an earlier point but that was not sucessful. Now if I attempt to boot into 8 I am told windows cannot find the file: "\Windows\system32\winload.exe" I can still boot into Windows 7 and from there I can open the W8 partition and drill down through directories to "\Windows\system32\winload.exe" and that file appears to be in the proper place but something isn't right...I'm hoping I might to be able to fix this from within Windows 7 and avoid a refresh or reset. Thanks,Philip

Just like the title says. I was away for a week. Oh, just before I took this trip, I reinstalled a motherboard that was sent in for repair to ASUS. I checked the sn, and I did get the same board back that I sent in. I left on this trip less than one day after doing the re-install.

Also, if this matters, Office 2013 wants to be activated. Plus Norton Internet Security, which I get through Comcast.

Is the motherboard the root cause here? How do I get well with Microsoft?

Before the repair, everything was running fine. Both Windows and Office were up to date with patches. I got this Win 10 as an upgrade from Win 7 Pro.

Hi all
everything OK until the weekend when after what appeared to be a less than satisfactory Windows update I can not use System Restore to go back to last week (main problem signature 6.1.7600.16385). I started the process because I was not hearing sound despite all drivers etc being in place and working properly. I also can not get the wireless card to communicate with the router now (although I still have access with the wired desktop). I ran a CHKDSK /r overnight (results attached). I am naturally wondering if it is either a system corrupt or a virus (my suspicions were aroused here when a malwarebytes AV scan kept stopping after a few seconds in safe mode). Obviously there is a recommended list of workarounds for this but I would appreciate what the current line of thinking on this was? speccy profile below followed by edited extract (for space limitations) minitoolbox output as well as the appropriate attachments (NB CBS.zip too big to attach)

many thanks!

Hi Folks. You know how when you download update files and patches for XP from M$oft a little icon appears in your taskbar which if you hover your mouse over will bring up the percentage of a download achieved so far?Well my little icon has been sitting there for about a week showing 0% download. It used to be when you clicked on it you could get it to pause, but it's not reacting at all to clicking.I wouldn't mind except it's obviously absorbing some of the system's resources and it's also obviously something gone glitchy. I think the related process is WUAUCLT.EXECan someone tell me how to turn this icon/process off safetly?(I tried disabling the wuauclt process, and it turned off ok.....and then turned itself back on again.)The OS is WinXP SP1 but Not SP2.Cheers for any ideas.

Answer:Windows update stuck on 0% for a week or so.

this may help although don't automatically assume you have a virus click here

Windows Vista SP2 Beta Next Week

There is a post today on the Windows Vista Team Blog that says a beta of Service Pack 2 for Vista will be in the hands of testers next week. Some of the features to be included with SP2 are native Blu-ray recording in Vista, Windows Search 4.0, a Bluetooth 2.1 feature pack and more.

Following the success of Windows Vista Service Pack 1 last spring, we have been working hard on Windows Vista Service Pack 2. As a part of the development and testing process, we're going to start by providing a small group of Technology Adoption Program customers with Windows Vista SP2 Beta for evaluation next Wednesday, October 29. The final release date for Windows Vista SP2 will be based on quality. So we'll track customer and partner feedback from the beta program before setting a final date for the release.

Answer:Windows Vista SP2 Beta Next Week

oh ya! I cant wait!

EDIT:

question, is it worth entering the beta? What is the possible risks?

I just read somewhere else that some people are having issues ( such as BSOD) since the last Windows updates.( Last week)

I have Win 7 Ultimate 64 bit and thus far no issues.
Do I need to uninstall some of these Windows updates? If so, which ones? ( I am seeing conflicting reports on which to uninstall).

thanks in advance for your help

Answer:Last week ( August) Windows updates

I have installed all the updates on multiple computers with no issues.

I would not uninstall any of them at this point.

I installed this week's Microsoft patches on my XP machine. After re-booting, all the printers had disappeared from Word, although other programs such as Outlook and Excel are OK. I restored my PC to the restore point immediately before the updates and the printers were fine. A couple of days later, I was prompted again by Windows update and installed the patches again. Same problem, no printers.Has anyone else found this problem, do you know which update caused it, is there a work-around?

Answer:Problems with this week's Windows patches??

The updates loaded fine on my system. However, I do remember many months ago losing functions in windows explorer after a download. It was caused by my old HP printer! It could have something to do with that.Did you check on the Microsoft website for any problems associated with the updates. Since I experienced my probs I always read the notes before downloading these updates.

I've had three bsod this week. I only have one dmp file in minidump and that's attached.

Monday, April 12, visual studio 2010 was released and I installed it. The crashes started after that but of course there is not certain connection at this time. I crashed Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday (today) one time each. The first two bsod visual studio 2010 was loaded; today it was not; only apps I'd stated were firefox 3.6.3 and zimbra desktop (an email client). Today I had just clicked on a tab in firefox when the bsod took place. That might have been true the other times but I'm not sure.

This pc was built by myself a month ago; and it's the first 64 bit os I've spent any real time with.

Anyways I hope someone can provide a clue or two re what might be amiss from the dmp.

This crash was probably caused by your vfilter.sys, which is part of your VPN. I would uninstall it to test.

I had to purchase a new HDD as my old one went bad. Doing so I had reinstalled windows 7 to which over a week now trying to get updates which to no avail has not worked.

Steps I have taken:

1. Downloaded Surt which it just searches for updates for over 2 hours with nothing happening.

2. ran sfc /scannow 4x times with nothing being found.

3. Ran the sfc /scannow boot with nothing found.

4. ran chkdisk with nothing found

5. changed my network to 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 been running for an hour now with nothing found.

6. tried downloading and running https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3112343 to which also just searches for updates through standalone with nothing happening.

I am clueless at this point.... attached is a copy of the cbs, thanks!

Answer:Windows 7 update not updating after a week

I actually found a fix reading around the forums that worked perfectly that I bet alot of people never seen or have tried and I added an extra step to doing it.

Vickyv had posted this below
This has worked for me every time:

The solution:

Stop the Windows Update Service (wuauserv).
Download and install KB3050265
reboot
Download and install KB3102810
Reboot and check for updates again. All of our machines found their required updates in less than 5 minutes.

Now these steps didn't exactly work as the standalone would just be searching for updates without nothing happening for hours. So if this is happening to anyone else please follows these steps.

1. Go into Task manager and make sure to stop the Windows Update Service (wuauserv).

2. Now in task manager go to services tab, then bottom right corner open "services". Should bring you into a pop up. Scroll down to the windows update service wuauserv and right click hit restart.

3. download patch one specified above and double click to install, it should actually open standalone and take 30 seconds to install the patch. restart should pop up asking to do so, click restart.

4. download the patch two specified above and double click to install, same as last patch. then restart.

5. rerun your normal windows updater for a while and you should finally see updates being found.

The launch of Windows 7 has triggered at least a temporary spike in PC sales, Morgan Stanley analyst Katheryn Huberty says in an investment note issued yesterday. Pointing to NPD sales data, the researcher notes that computer sales jumped about 40 percent during the week of Microsoft's OS launch compared to the same time a year earlier. The number is partly offset by buyers holding off on purchases during the previous two weeks, when sales dropped 29 percent and then 2 percent versus 2008, but is well above earlier weeks, when sales were up by at most 19 percent.

Code:

athurx.sys Wed Apr 20 06:07:45 2011 (4DAEB071)

It needs to be updated. Check system manufacturer's support site.

Hi,

Did your system pass the Upgrade Check for Windows 7?

One reason for lag may be insufficient video resources.....or other hardware.

How about system maintenance....cleaning up temp files, defrag, error checks?

Been inside the case if it is a tower and cleaned up fans and dust?

Are all the fans working well- and is the system running too warm?

I believe Windows 7 and the IE 8.0 browser, are causing the most of your issue

Try this to see if it helps:>

This is my personal one-user PC. Upon booting, I usually enter a 4 digit PIN. This week's updates changed my PIN to my Windows password, the same one I use for live.com. I want to change it back, but am wary, as I've been confused with Windows passwords before.

I just want someone here to confirm that if I use the PIN change shown in the picture, I am only affecting my device-specific PIN, and not anything else.

Also, why would the update have changed my PIN anyway?
Thanks,
Rusty

Answer:This week's updates changed my PIN to my Windows password

First, are you sure your PIN sign-in was disabled? Sometimes, especially after an upgrade Windows just resets the default sign-in method, switching back to Password sign in instead of PIN sign-in.

In this case although Windows is asking for your password, it also shows a link for Sign-in options:

Clicking that link you can switch back to PIN sign-in:

Anyway, that being said, a PIN is only for that machine and has nothing to do with your Microsoft account nor does it change anything in your Microsoft account. Just enter your old PIN, set new one and you are done.

Totally safe!

Windows 8 'release preview' due in early June | Microsoft - CNET News
Good news for windows 8 (See link)!
I put the consumer preview on my Samsung Series 7 Slate yesterday. It runs so smooth. I love the mail client that comes pre-installed. I might have been converted from outlook. (But of course i'll still use outlook) The kindle reader is good to. I WANT A MAGAZINE READER!!! Something like the kindle newstand or something.
I cant wait for the release preview and the real deal.
What are your thoughts on windows 8 so far?
What changes do you expect in the final release?

What changes do you expect in the final release? I am also happily running Windows 8 on a Series 7 Slate. I like the mail client, but unless I'm missing them, there aren't really any settings for the accounts. I would like for the app to display all of my emails, and it seems to only keep the last two weeks worth. Obviously it is just a preview version, and I expect this to be rectified by the retail version, or perhaps in the release preview.
The Kindle app could use some touch optimizations I think, but it works.
I got the SKU with the base and keyboard, and I love how I can use the slate as a tablet and then throw it on the base and use it like any other pc or laptop.
I'm really hoping that they get all of the Xbox Live functionality in place with the release preview, but I'm afraid that they're going to make us wait until the retail version.

I did a clean install on my Y510 about a week ago. Everything seemed to work ok initially but today I turned it on and it the touchpad no longer works. I have a spare mouse that works, but it would be nice to have the touchpad back. There are other issues too (camera image is upside down, lost audio controls, etc.) I would really like to have the touchpad back. Any suggestions?

Answer:y510 touchpad won't work after 1 week with Windows 7

Hello Kurt_07

The laptop model Y510 is not under compatible list for Windows 7.

You may try installing Windows Vista drivers and check.

If the issue persist then install Windows Vista and check.

If you have been waiting for Service Pack 1 for Windows Vista, well, you can now mark your calender.

Monday 4th February ... that's tomorrow.

Microsoft claims Windows Vista SP1 will provide key improvements on the security, performance and reliability of Windows Vista by providing :

All previously released updates since RTM
Performance and reliability improvements in core scenarios such as file copy, network browsing, and improved response time to resume from sleep.
Support for new types of hardware, and several emerging standards.
There are improvements to the administration experience. One of the most important changes we?re making is that BitLocker now supports encrypting for multiple volumes.
Of course, Service Pack 1 will also disable two common methods of hacking Windows Vista, namely the OEM BIOS exploit and the Grace Timer exploit.

Notable changes ...

http://technet2.microsoft.com/WindowsVista/en/library/005f921e-f706-401e-abb5-eec42ea0a03e1033.mspx?mfr=true

I'm looking forward to these "performance improvements" - it probably won't make much difference but you never know

Hi, About a week ago I upgraded from Vista to Windows 7 on my T400. I did a completely clean reinstall with a new hard drive and then downloaded all the drivers. Befrore switching to Windows 7 my 9 cell battery had no problems at all and lasted 4 hours easily. The first time I ran the computer on Windows 7 everything was going fine and I Think Pad Power Manager said I had 35% battery and an hour left on it. Then, it suddenly turned itself off. I turned it back on and Power Manager then said I had 3% battery  and 6 minutes. I plugged it in and it charged fully. However it did the same thing several more times. I checked that battery tab and it said the battery condition was "Good." Then, last night, I was working on some work stuff. The Power Manager said I had 45% battery left. Suddenly the computer turned off and would not turn back on. I plugged it in and the battery icon on the front started blinking orange on and off. The computer turned back on, but now it says "The battery has failed due to normal wear. The battery cannot be charged. Replace the battery." The battery will not charge and I cannot run the comptuer unless it is plugged in. The cycle count currently is 443 and it says the condition is "Poor." So here is my question: Did this happen because of Windows 7? I realize I have to in all likelihood get a new battery, but the battery was fine and never did anything like this when I was running Vista. It was working well and lasted a goo... Read more

Answer:Battery failure a week after updating to Windows 7

Hello and welcome,

No way to know for sure, but I have to vote for coincidence.  That's a lot of cycles on the battery, and maybe it was just due to go.

Based on the first part of your description, I would have suggested a battery reset, but that would probably have triggered the total shutdown that you've seen.  These batteries have internal protective logic, and once they think that battery is unusable or unsafe to charge it's game over.

To back up my guess that it's just an unfortunate coincidence, I have a T400 that I switched from Vista to Win 7 and the 3+ year old battery didn't change status.  (Apart from some issues with the switchable graphics driver causing somewhat increased power consumption - fixed at last...)

Good luck,
Z.

The Windows 10 launch wasn?t the smoothest around, but it went pretty good overall. Most people are happy with the upgrade and are enjoying all the benefits that the new operating system brought along. But it wasn?t good for everyone and quite a few issues for some people from trackpads lagging to browsers crashing and much more.

Microsoft was quick to release patches for most issues reported and it looks like they?ve collected them all into one package and probably added the latest fixes as well and dubbed it Service Release 1, or SR1. According to the latest reports, that is inbound for next week, the 10th of August. So that is great news for everyone that stuck it out despite minor trouble instead of reverting back to their old Windows 7 or 8/8.1 installation.

?Windows 10 SR1 is a cumulative update package. It will bring some new features, but the main purpose is to repair the system after release and fix the problems exposed.?

Later this year, Microsoft plans to provide more substantial upgrades and add new features to OneDrive and Skype, but most importantly browser extension support for Edge, Microsofts new and quite popular browser.

Have you made the switch to Windows 10 and if so, how do you like it so far? Had any major issues, then please let us know in the comment sections.Click to expand...

I did do the Windows update for this week. I do them pretty regularly. I have Win 7 Home Premium 64bit; SP1.

I have followed the instructions to attach the "dump." (hopefully correctly)

My Computer Savvy on scale of 1-10, I am maybe a 4. :-)

Any help would be much appreciated,

Thanks, KJ.

Answer:BSOD after Windows Update this week; related?

It may be related. The crash dump is not very precise about it.

If it is a stray BSOD, you may overlook it. But if it continue to occur, better you uninstall the suspect update. Windows Update - Uninstall an Update
Also, as a caution, Test your RAM modules for possible errors. How to Test and Diagnose RAM Issues with Memtest86+
Run memtest86+ for at least 8 consecutive passes.

If it start showing errors/red lines, stop testing. A single error is enough to determine that something is going bad there.

Let us know the results.

My previous laptop (Toshiba Satellite) had Windows 7 Pro and I was completely satisfied with it!  I detest windows 8 & 10 and find them both VERY user unfriendly.  When I went to look for games on line, none will download to my laptop.  How
can I find simple solitaire for my windows 7?

Thank you for your time, efforts and consideration!

Windows 7 that came preinstalled with the machine.  Installed a bunch of programs right away, the same ones I had on the old machine.

Cannot run Windows update. The system will get stuck looking forever for them, to no avail.

Maybe I should send everything back to Lenovo. Advice needed.

Answer:BSOD on new (one week only) Carbon X1 running Windows 7

This post from CKing123 should help with the Windows Update problems:  http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/625369/high-cpu-usage-and-endless-windows-update/?p=4075499
If you still have Windows Update problems, post over in the Windows 7 forums with "Windows Update" in the title of your post.  That way one of the Windows Update experts will see it.

If this fixes the Windows Update problem, and you still have problems - post back here for more diagnostics.
We can't do much if the system isn't fully updated.

This was likely caused by the following module: ntoskrnl.exe

The crash took place in a standard Microsoft module. Your system configuration may be incorrect, possibly the culprit is in another driver on your system which cannot be identified at this time.

Answer:[SOLVED] BSOD several times a week in windows 7 pro

Hi Michael -

Bugchecks on the 15 BSODs -

5 - 0x1a = memory management error

10 - 0x7f (0x8,,,) = exception occurred while error handler taking care of a prior exception, i.e., error within an error; CPU then signaled "Double-fault"; BSODs ensued

Probable causes are listed as the Microsoft NT Kernel & Executive and the Microsoft networking subsystem driver netio.sys. Both are defaults.

I see that you have updated NVIDIA video drivers since the BSODs started on the day of Windows 7 installation. All other drivers appear current. The one common denominator in all of the dumps - Norton Internet Security/ Norton 360. I suggest that you remove it.

NIS/ N360 Removal --> http://www.jcgriff2.com/NRT_N360_Removal.html

If BSODs persist, run the Driver Verifier -- http://jcgriff2.com/driver_verifier.htm

Looks to be tracking along the same time frame as Windows 7 did in test.

Looks like June is going to be a very busy month for Microsoft, the Windows 8 RP, Office 15 Beta and probably the launch of Windows Phone Apollo.

Answer:Windows 8 Release Preview coming 'first week of June'

they were saying that more people are testing windows 8 than windows 7 in the same time frame....
