The Secret Origin of Windows

Question: The Secret Origin of Windows

A quarter century ago, Windows wasn't everywhere. In fact, some were doubtful it would ever ship at all.

At that point Windows was no longer considered the company?s star project, as it had become a bit of an embarrassment. Even internally there were doubts among some in the company that Windows would ever ship. Also, because Ballmer had already burned though four product managers to try to get there?people who now had been either reassigned or were no longer at Microsoft?the product was developing a reputation for career death.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi, can someone please help as EA aren't helping me!

Origin was working fine until yesterday. Then it came up with this error code:

The procedure entry point _except1 could not be located in the dynamic link library C:\Program\Origin\Origin.exe.

So I uninstalled Origin, several times and followed EVERYTHING they told me to do, manual uninstall, do it with no anti virus etc. I even tried to download from a third party website, which did progress more in the installation but still failed with even more error messages!

I have had Microsoft access my computer and they have also tried everything and have confirmed that nothing at all is wrong with my laptop (which is what EA was trying to say).

Its really frustrating now and I hope someone can help please!

I have a Toshiba laptop and I am running windows 10.

It was compatible with windows 10 as it was working for a week or so. It did keep crashing but I changed screen resolution and was fine.

I will appreciate any help, Thanks!

I have received a secret.key file in order to decrypt my files that were encrypted due to the Cryptodefense virus. I then opened this file in notepad but the file association is now a text file. How do I revert it back to a .key file? I am running Windows 7 OS.

Answer:Converting secret.txt to secret.key

A repository of all current knowledge regarding CryptoDefense is provided by Grinler (aka Lawrence Abrams), in this tutorial: CryptoDefense and How_Decrypt Ransomware Information Guide and FAQReading that Guide will help you understand what CryptoDefense and How_Decrypt Ransomware does and provide information for how to deal with it and possibly decrypt/recover your files. There is also a lengthy ongoing discussion in this topic: CryptoDefense - Newest cryptolocker variant. Rather than have everyone start individual topics, it would be best (and more manageable for staff) if you posted any questions, comments or requests for assistance in that topic discussion.ThanksThe BC Staff

This is not an advert for "Windows Secrets" (oh yes it is) but a strong recommendation for this weekly newsletter published by a dozen well qualified Microsoft connected people.
I was spurred on to post this by the several useful items in this weeks edition, it comes over Wednesday nights.
The majority of the content is free but I have subscribed for several years to get the extra "paid for" content, you pay what you can afford or consider it to be worth, I send ten dollars a year, that's about the minimum I think.
I would like to hear what you think of it, it does not in any way impinge on this forum, you can't ask questions.

Names are loosely translated from Norwegian and probably not right in the English version.

A few days ago I got careless when posting a screenshot of my system info (the one which shows the Windows experience based on hardware) and forgot to censor anything. I'm wondering if any of this information can be used? (I'm thinking in particular about my Windows product id, workgroup and computer name). In that case, is it something I can do to reduce the damage?

Didn't really strike me before now that I could have screwed up bad.

1. Software that turns normal displays into touchscreensI don?t know how Microsoft did this. It seems like they would have needed cooperation from the hardware manufacturers. Nevertheless, it appears that the company has developed its own highly-secret software that can turn any standard LCD screen into a touchscreen. Now users will no longer have to a do a simple click-and-drag to resize photos. Instead they?ll be able to reach up to their screens with both hands and use a set of complicated multi-touch gestures to do the same thing, and it will only take 5-10 seconds longer. Upon further digging, I also discovered that all mouse and keyboard drivers appear to be in a time-bombed phase-out cycle.2. PC-to-PC version of the Zune ?squirting? featureOne of the most underused features in the Microsoft Zune platform is squirting, which allows a Zune user to share a song with another Zune user over Wi-Fi (although the squirted song can only be used for three days or three plays). Microsoft thinks this feature is very innovative and deserves much more attention and usage than it has received. Therefore, it has quietly integrated it into Windows 7. This will allow cubical mates to share songs with each other from their massive libraries of Zune Marketplace selections, and laptop users will even be use to shoot songs to each from other across the aisle in the subway, for example. In a surprising move, there is currently no PC-to-Zune or Zune-to-PC option. However, I?ve learned that Pa... Read more

Windows 7 has a GodMode which contain options to change almost every settings in Windows 7. It is recently uncovered by Windows7Themes.net. It is an advanced control panel which provides access to all the features in one explorer window. In the Windows 7 control panel, features are grouped together either in categories or control panel item names. GodMode enables to get everything listed at one place.
Here’s how to enable it: Create a new folder anywhere you want.Rename it to : GodMode.{ED7BA470-8E54-465E-825C-99712043E01C} Hit Enter, the icon will change like to the Control Panel have.

My NE 522 came with Windows 8 64-bit but when I was informed that I could upgrade to Windows 10 for free I jumped on it. I remember having to stair-step to 8.1 then 10 during installation. Everything seemed to be fine for a few months then the BSOD. I managed to get it going again for a short time and now the Laptop is not operational. At startup I get the Gateway logo then a blue screen saying "Default boot device missing..." I get past this using the "recovery" stick I made just after purchase but I get "Choose keyboard layout" then "Troubleshoot or Turn off" as options. I have used the Troubleshoot Path to get to the command prompt. I also can get through POST and access the InsydeH20 startup utility (BIOS) which I use to unfreeze the HDD password (not sure why it keep freezing). Refresh, Reset, Restore and Automatic Repair all fail. From command prompt I access x:\Program Files <x86>> desktop.ini and see one HDD (Boot) with 27.6 MB free of 30.0 MB. I also see the Removable Storage devices.

The top of the command window says "Microsoft Windows [Version 6.2.9200]" Does this mean Windows is installed?
If I have lost the OS how should I attempt to re-install, Win8 then upgrade or straight to Win10?

Answer:OS origin for Laptop or Windows 10

AFRet96 said:

No need for Win8, you can go straight to a clean install of Windows 10. Your successful upgrade from 8 to 10 has recorded a Digital Licence tied to your PC's hardware on Microsoft's activation servers. Do a clean install of 10 (making sure you install the same version as you had before, Home or Pro) and when it asks for a key skip this with the 'I don't have one' or 'register later' option. Once installed your Digital Licence will automatically activate the new install.

Who needs Windows Calc? Cortana can do simple math, and with one extra keystroke you can display a full-featured calculator in the Start menu.
By Ed Bott for The Ed Bott Report | February 24, 2016 -- 12:27 GMT (12:27 GMT) | Topic: Windows 10

You don't need an app to do basic math in Windows 10. If you've enabled Cortana, you can perform those calculations by tapping the Windows key and then typing the formula in the search box.

Make your formula as simple or as complex as you want, using standard operators: + and - for addition and subtraction, * and / for multiplication, % for percentages, ^ for exponentiation. Cortana automatically groups internal calculations; use parentheses if you want to control grouping.

As soon as you type an equals sign or press Enter, Cortana displays the result at the top of the search results list.

Want to do more calculations using the result of that formula? Press Enter to open the full calculator shown here.

Note that the calculator vanishes as soon as you click away, and you can't copy the formula or its results.

Doesn't windows live work with steam games? I got the steam version of GTA 4 and it would sign me into windows live so I could see when my XBox friends were online. (Bonus XBox points for playing on PC. )

Never really used it much so can't say for quality, but I imagine Win Live would be for the XBoxers to stay in touch.

Monday night after returning from work, several problems cropped up on my computer all at the same time after I restarted it. My computer had been running somewhat slow before then, but virus scans didn't detect anything wrong. Here are the problems that I've been having since I restarted my comp:
The first thing I noticed was that my monitor's resolution changed from its standard 1024x768 to 800x600, which made everything appear big and wouldn't fit my wallpaper properly. Also, all my icons were reset to their default positions. I managed to fix these problems and my screen resolution and icon arrangement has stayed normal, except from when I tried a system restore.
My computer has been running very slowly, far more so than before Monday night. It seems like it takes five times as long to load anything (programs, web pages, etc.). It also takes far more time than normal to restart my computer (it even failed to reboot once, and I was forced to unplug and replug my computer to get it to start up).
Whenever I scroll down the page in any window (in IE, Word, Frontpage, or any other program, it does so slowly and there's this weird "ripple" or "wave" effect to the scrolling motion. It does this whether I use a window's scroll bar or my mouse's scroll wheel. Also, a similar problem happens whenever I drag a window across the screen.

Make a windows folder secret and protected under any circunstanceI need a program to make a folder only accesible by a password. In other words : protect that folder. But I would like to be impossible too access tha folder from a live CD with Ubuntu or any other operating system. The folder must be protected under any circunstance.May be you can format the pc but impossible to access to that folder without the password. Exists ?Best Regards

Answer:Make a windows folder secret and protected under any circunstance

Well, you could encrypt folders in Windows by using the encryption option built in to Windows but I'm not sure that prevents access via a Linux OS Live CD that you mentioned.  I think you might consider other options such as an external hard drive that is password protected; see http://www.softwaregeek.com/external-hard-disk-password/p1.html for some software tools for this.  Also, see http://www.aragonsoft.com/en/winsesame/ re: "the most powerful encryption software to encrypt and password protect all types of files and folders on hard drives, external drives, usb flash drives, CD, network and email attachments."Another option might be an online storage which is, of course, password protected.  An example is http://www.adrive.com/

The title of the article is How to find the secret Start Menu built into Windows 8.1, but I just checked and it works great in Windows 10! When reading the article, follow the instructions in Windows 10 and there ya go!

I usually advise readers, but this time a reader gave me advice. Joe Rubenstein told me that "There is a Start Menu in Windows 8.1," then explained how to make it work.

Yes, it's true. You can add a Start menu--of sorts--to the Windows 8.1 taskbar without installing a third-party program. All of the code is built into Windows itself.

Answer:How to find the secret Start Menu built into Windows 10

Hi there

OLD OLD stuff -- It's just based on using a CUSTOM TOOLBAR -- I already described this stuff AGES and AGES ago including adding Metro (Modern apps) to it.

The article is MISLEADING -- It's not a NEW START MENU -- although useful -- and custom toolbars have been around for a LONG TIME including W7.

Some of these Journalists don't deserve their money at all.

Here's my post from a LONG time ago.

Okay, the title sounds vague, but I can give more information.

I am currently running Windows Vista on my HP Pavilion laptop. About a month ago, I started having an issue when Vista launched. After all of the pre-load process had finished executing, I got a message that said that Windows Explorer had stopped responding, and was restarting. Then a whole slew of programs and Windows services went through the same process. Everything from McAfee to my touchpad management software either restarted or stopped all together, and then the computer rebooted.

Now whenever I start up the computer, I still get the same problem with the following two processes: Windows Explorer, and Task Scheduler Engine. The computer does not go into a forced reboot anymore.

Certain programs have not worked properly since. The most notable are IE, Windows Live Messenger, and Yahoo Messenger. IE behaves like I have no active connection, and I can't sign into either of the messengers. Oddly enough, Firefox works just fine - no problems connecting to the net and opening pages.

As I am the only one who uses this computer, I have no idea where this could have come from.

If anyone has any suggestions, please let me know.

Lately I've had a few issues with my computer, it got slower, and some games didnt install properly due to directX errors. So after looking at some forums for battlefield 3 directX errors I read that uninstalling Origin would be a good idea to fix the problem. While that was going on, first the mouse stopped working (keeping in mind it does that sometimes without there being a problem with the computer), then the screen froze entirely. It came back for a few seconds afterwards, then it froze again and i got the BSOD.

It was set to automatical reboot, so I couldnt read what the error was.

Now the problem I'm having is that, when I start the computer I get these options: Start computer in safe mode , Safe mode with internet, Safe mode with leadtext or whatever and Start windows Normal. Which ever I choose will fail.

Choosing the Normal startup will cause the computer to get stuck on the windows login screen with the wobbly win logo.

Choosing the Safe mode (with and without internet) causes it to stuck, it seems to not be able to load some files.

I've tried running the repair windows option, but the screen went black and nothing else happend.

My thread was closed and I was told to follow the new instructions which I had read already. I am using Windows Vista 64bit and DDS is not compatible with this OS. I did a GMER scan only being able to select the three default options and results turned up with zero results and no log.

Here is the original message for review unless there is another set of instructions for 64bit users.

I have been testing a small application called Alpha Blender which enables me to set windows transparency case to case. I originally did a single file scan on Bit Defender and Kaspersky and both came up with clean results. However, I just used TotalVirus file scanner and it came up with the results below:

http://www.virustotal.com/analisis/6...994-1243064377

Do these results mean that I do in fact have a keylogger on my system tracking my strokes? I am using BlackViper tweaks minimum config so I know it may have helped. Just need insight on weather or not my passwords may be compromised.

I have attached an HT log for review. If any more information is needed I can help.

No, not necessarily.

Programs, often do not produce the desired results on 64 bit systems.

Lets do a couple of scans to make sure you are clean.

Please do the following:

As a Vista user I will require that all the programs I ask you to run, be run by right clicking the icon and selecting Run as Administrator. Otherwise some programs may fail to operate correctly

Download OTS**to your DesktopClose ALL OTHER PROGRAMS.
Double-click on OTS.exe to start the program.
Check the box that says Scan All Users
Check the box that says 64 bit
Under Additional Scans check the following:File - Lop Check
File - Purity Scan
Evnt - EvtViewer (last 10)

Now click the Run Scan button on the toolbar.
Let it run unhindered until it finishes.
When the scan is complete Notepad will open with the report file loaded in it.
Click the Format menu and make sure that Wordwrap is not checked. If it is then click on it to uncheck it.
Please attach the log in your next post.

Hi all!

Just starting out on this forum, so I hope you can help me out.

I have a program installed that uses a dll. Recently, I started getting the following error message:
"The application or dll xxxx is not a valid windows image. Please check this against your installation diskette." (xxxx being my dll path and name; message translated from french, but I'm sure you'll recognise it, I've seen the same kind on the forums elsewhere)

My issue is not to replace the dll, I know it's not corrupt, but it is in a weird format, which might explain the message.

However, what I'd like to know is why windows is suddenly so worried about this dll, and if there's anything I can do to simply tell windows to ignore it. At which point does windows decide to check this local dll? (the program is installed locally in it's own folders, nothing in system32 or elsewhere)

Hope you can help me out!

Thanks in advance!

Answer:origin of message : "xxx is not a valid windows image."

Generally this error means you got the wrong version of the dll installed. IE you are running XP and installed one for Win98 and the one for XP is slightly different.

Sometimes this is a path issue and all you need to do is to copy (not move) the DLL and put it with the others in System32

In addition there are a few specific problems which cause this type of error
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/907300

Autocad also has a similar problem for which there is a patch.
So please be more specific.
Is this just one dll? If so what is it?
What application and what consequence?

You should also try reregistering the dll
using your example
go to start / run and type
regsvr32 xxxx.dll
hit enter and wait for it to say success

I was readin this article on tech republic, that was talking about secret features of Windows 7, and can't decide if they are true, and if so, if they work, and if so, how do you activate, implement, and use them. Thank you. The link below is to the article.... Five super-secret features in Windows 7 | 1 of 307

Answer:"Secret features of Windows 7"

1. Software that turns normal displays into touchscreens

I don?t know how Microsoft did this. Upon further digging, I also discovered that all mouse and keyboard drivers appear to be in a time-bombed phase-out cycle.

Anyone using such software?

Question: Secret Log On

Is there a way I can create a username that won't show up on the Window's XP Log On Screen without pressing anything, in a way that is only visible when a key is pressed, much like a shortcut key-?

I know it sounds stupid.

Answer:Secret Log On

You can use the default Administrator account. It doesn't show up on the welcome screen unless you don't have any enabled users. Just press <ctrl><alt><del> twice to bring up the username/password box.

Question: What's the secret?

The secret I want to know is how to make Win7 sleep. I've set and reset the power options. I want it to go to sleep after 15 minutes of inactivity. At the moment, it will go to sleep after 15 minutes, but about 2 minutes later, it shuts down. Have to use the power button to "wake" it, although the mouse is set to do that. How do I keep it from shutting down?

Answer:What's the secret?

The computer might be set to go into Hibernation or the hard disk might be set to be turned off after 20 minutes. Go to Start-->Control Panel-->Hardware and Sound-->Power Options. This should bring up a screen with the different power option plans for your computer. Click on 'Change plan settings' on the right side next to the power plan that you are using. Then click on 'Change advanced power settings'. Go through and check what the fields are set for underneath 'Hard Disk' and all the options under 'Sleep', especially the 'Hibernate after' field.

My guess is that 'Hard Disk' is set to 20 minutes (Windows 7 default). Extend the time for that option.

... is there such a thing... I want a free web host service that can disguise the contributore, ie me, as my site has already been closed down on Freeserve, UK's largest ISP, by my employer. I am a teacher who works for a crap education authority and my site DEEP CHALK aims to expose corruption, fiddling and inefficiency but I don't want to lose my job!

Answer:Secret Web Hosting?

Hiya

There are Web hosting sites that offer total anonymity. Most are not in the US or UK. They are usually in Russia or the Far East. There may be a few scattered around that are totally anon in the US or UK. Don't trust Angelfire. Freeserve, from what I think, are not that good at total anon.
I am with Telewest and the only way I think you could get around the problems here in the UK is to set up a password system that changes all the time. You could email the passes out.

Hey all decided to reformat and reinstall vista however ran into a issue. I have 2 HD's and when i get to which partition does vista want to install to I have 8GB of unallocated space. Now I have no clue to where this came from because I can't combine it with my other unallocated space on my other HD's. When I highlight it, it also says "this computer's hardware may not support booting to this disk. Ensure that the disk's controller is enabled in the computer's BIOS menu." Now I never had this unallocated space before. It wont let me create a partition out of it.

I have no idea what could cause this to appear. I recently got a new DVD burner. Its a black LG 1 and I also installed a SQL database which im thinking maybe could of made a seperate partition. However it is unallocated space not a partition so i dont think thats the case. I just want to know what the hell it is. I have no usb flash drives/external HD's connected or anything. I am worried it could be a virus that attaches itself to a unallocated partition in secret or something because I can only see this when I try to reinstall windows.

Answer:A Secret 8gb partition!?!?! HELP!!!

You sure that's not 8 MB? Windows (XP) sets aside 8 MB for use if you switch the drive to a dynamic disk.

I tried to install the "WordPerfect Office X5" package and during the installation I got the error shown in the attached.

So I changed user to the built-in-administrator account and tried again. Got the same error.

So I took ownership of the C:\ProgramData tree and tried again. got the same error.

So I created the user name "everyone" in folder C:\ProgramData and gave it full privileges. Tried to install again. Got the same error.

Noted that the error message tree had folders ..\Corel\WordPerect Office X5 in the program folder. These folders were not there before installation started, s I figure that the install program put them there as part of the install but did not give them full privilege.

So I created folders ..\Corel\WordPerect Office X5 in folder \Programs took owner ship of them and add the user name "everyone' with full privileges and tried install again. Same error message.

Am I mixing up privilege and permission? If so how do I grant "permission" and how about inheritance?

What's the secret to AS5? I know you're only supposed to put a little bit on the part you want it on, but whenever I try I get this long string of stuff (cause it's sticky). What's the secret to only getting a little bit?

Answer:AS5...what's the secret to this stuff? :/

Lol, I just put AS5 on my CPU about 3 weeks ago, and I totally forget... I would say try to GENTALY roll the tip on the surface of whatever it is to prevent the strings... or perhaps try twisting the tube (rolling) it in your fingers to get it to stop...

You clean off whatever it is with Isopropyl alcohol first right? (I prolly spelt it wrong).

I have discovered my personal pc "Godsend" for a warm aluminum box and, wow, is it an inexpensive way to go.

I've been using the 80mm Stealths, but these 120mm jobs are really something. Pulled out 4 open pci slot covers, installed some filter material (held in place by the bolts that hold on the covers and the sound card, itself) and then fab'd a couple mounts and bolted the fan up pointing toward the open slots (about 1.5 to 2 iinches away. Powered it with the same little kit I'm running my other external fans (300W psu attached to an old motherboard).

Hoping for a miracle and got 3 - 5 deg. centigrade less under load. Next is to put the other one in place of the top exhaust.

I can't hear it at all... I'm just afraid I'll forget it's back there one day and jam my hand in it. Did it once, not fun...

Did I mention "quiet?

The BIOS Boot menu key will only trigger the bootable partition on a hard drive itself and doesn't offer a choice of more than one on the same hard drive. This is the function of a boot manager like Windows Boot Manager which would be configured when you install the second OS, or using EasyBCD. You can hide a Boot Manager listing using EasyBCD by turning off its boot menu timeout, which can also be done in Control Panel>System>Advanced System Settings>Startup and Recovery. A listing can also be passworded once it boots into Windows.

There is a Plop Boot Manager and Smart Boot Manager which say they have password protection for both manager and listings.

I have a customer who has been trying to get a game going that they bought their kids for Xmas -- Secret Agent Barbie. Their computer meets the minimum requirements for that game (and then some) plus they already have a lot of other Barbie titles installed and running fine. It's a Pentium-III 500MHz w/200Mb RAM, 13Gb HDD, ATI Xpert98 AGP card w/8Mb (using Rage Pro chipset), SoundBlaster PCI128 card (I think).

I helped them put all the newest drivers into the system (ATI, DirectX 8.1, etc.). The game has been uninstalled / reinstalled too many times to count. When I was there I installed the game (again) and the first time I ran it, the thing worked. After the first time, it's back to not working again. When you get into the game (past all the intros), the background displays fine but the characters are nothing but poloygons. It's almost like the DirectX is messing up the shapes in the game -- moving characters.

I have checked all the web sites I could find, but nowhere can I find mention of this game (one page with a few paragraphs of tips was all I could find -- no help there). If anyone else had these kinds problems (even with a different game) and solved it, I'd appreciate some input.

We could probably all sit down and name off hundreds of reasons that FireFox is so successful, but since it’s the weekend and I don’t want to bug you, we’ll just let this article do the talking for now.

"A lot of people don't even know what a browser is," said Firefox co-creator Blake Ross. "They think that it's the first thing they use on the Internet. They say, 'What do you mean browser, is that Google? Is that Yahoo?' It's hard to get people to switch browsers if they don't understand the concept."

Hello, I noticed these EXEs on my computer a few weeks ago and only two days ago did I start checking it out because it began to spread to all my USB drives.

I searched my computer for both of these files and I found that both of these exes existed in my windows/prefetch file. I deleted phim nguoi lon.exe first and rebooted with no trouble, but the file was still reappearing on my USB drives so I deleted secret.exe and then rebooted and now I am stuck in a log-on log-off loop. I started the computer in safe mode and after making a registry backup I deleted the reg_cz values of phim nguoi lon.exe and secret.exe and tried to reboot. Same loop problem.

So my question is, what do I do to get this off of my computer and USB drives?

I thought all webpages show their code up when you press ´page source´ on the menu. Recently I came across a website whose every page appears as a blank notepad screen when ´page source´ is clicked. How is this done?

Answer:Page source kept secret!

but frankly I wouldn't bother. It's considered a petty-minded thing to do, and in any case it's ludicrously easy to circumvent. Many people think that html code is copyright-protected, but that's not true - it's the text and images on your site which are protected, the html may be used by anyone. If you want to do a little experiment, put the following code into the head of your html document, save the page and then try right-clicking on it in your browser. Now got to 'View' on the browser toolbar and select 'source'. See what I mean? This particular script only works in Internet Explorer by the way. Here's the script:-<script language="JavaScript"> var message = "Sorry, that function is disabled.\n\n"; message += "This page code is protected, and "; message += "all content is protected."; function click(e) { if (document.all) { if (event.button == 2) { alert(message); return false; } } if (document.layers) { if (e.which == 3) { alert(message); return false; } } } if (document.layers) { document.captureEvents(Event.MOUSEDOWN); } document.onmousedown=click; </script>

Hi everyone, been a long time xD
Well I am posting this in ask your question forum because I am technically asking... Basically I was on the bus on my way to work. I noticed a woman across me playing a game on her phone... I then realised its a windows phone with the logos and everything on the front. The shape looked similar to Lumia's uni-body design.
However! I noticed it looking rather unfamiliar, the woman's phone USB was at the top, with the headphone jack next to it too! It was most definitely a Windows 8 device as it had that new logo and not the curvy windows logo! The phone looked like a Lumia and was slightly larger if not the same as a Lumia 920.
At first I was like awesome she has a 920... then seeing the USB and Headphone jack at the top just made me really confused!
Any lumia devices like this? Or is this something new to you guys/gals too?
I'm just going to add where I work we always get Sony, Microsoft etc. Coming setting up stalls and pitching to us products and new stuff... Not just where I work particularly but the buildings nearby offer the same jobs so I can safely assume they also pitch to those too!

Answer:Secret Lumia spotted?

I have the Lumia 928 with Verizon. It"s headphone jack and charging USB ports are on the top of the phone.

Hi,

I am one of the select few who hasn't been able to install any of the last three Cumulative Updates for Win 10, Version 1607. When KB3197356 was announced I decided to try my luck with it. This time I downloaded it as a .cab file.

Now I am at a complete loss as what to do next. Right now it is on my 'C' Drive, in my Downloads folder, in the form of a zip file and I don't have a clue what I should do next.

Any ideas?

Thanks and regards,

PLEASE HELPHAVE A HP Pavilion Elite d5200t ATX , I BOUGHT IN 2008... I LOADED WINDOWS 10 BACK IN APRIL AND LOST MY ADMINISTRATOR PRIVILEGES GOT LOCKED OUT AS AN ADMINISTRATOR... I HAVE TRIED MANY WAYS TO FIX IT AND NO LUCK. I CAN GET TO THE SECRET ADMINADMINISTRATOR THROUGH WINDOWS 10 BUT IS DOES  ASK FOR A PASSWORD THAT I DO NOT HAVE. IF I AM ABLE TO GO IN THIS WAS MAYBE I CAN SET UP MY ADMIN ACCOUNT AGAIN I MY NAME .. SEEMS THERE MAY BE A PASSWORD OUT THERE THAT MAY WORK ,,,READING OTHER POSTS SUPER DESPERATE TO FIX THIS COMPUTERTHANK YOU

Answer:SECRET ADMINISTRATOR PASSWORD

As far as I know, there is no "secret administrator password".However, on another computer, Google-search for "nordahl offline password".You may download this software, burn it onto a CD-recordable disk. Then, insert this "bootable" disk into your computer, and restart your computer, and tell it to boot from the disk (not the 'C:' drive). This program lets you "blank" out the password for any account.Reboot your computer, from 'C:', choose the account that you have "blanked", and leave blank the password field. Then, once Windows has booted, set a new password, and tattoo it onto your body  :-)so that you cannot forget it.

Only withing the past few weeks, my CPU shot up to 50+% at "normal" with most processes shut down. I've elready used processscanner, services.msc, & msconfig to make sure of that. I've got some kind of hidden power hog in my system.

My problems started last year, after adding 80% of Octopus Overlord's mod collection to Morrowind (& then some) & playing it for a month like that.

American Mcgee's Alice was doing fine from August (when I got my card) till January (it's among a list of old games I never get sick of). Now it's so slow, the menu & contolls take minutes to respond after point-&-click & the cursor really lags. The audio also soundschoppy. Toning down graphics, textures, & audio quality didn't help much. Lag eventually leads to freezing. Was taking over 111,000K memory usage, last I checked. I've axed all nonmanditory running processes, defragged, upgraded drivers, ran CCleaner, used 2 virus scanners & 3 adware scanners; nothing will make the game play at normal speed. Morrowind kept crashing & saved games wouldn't paly, but that problem is more than likely due to conflicting mods.

Please help if you can. ;_;

Graphics Card: NVIDIA GeForce 7600GT (256MB memory)

Answer:Secret CPU hog. Can't play PC games ;_;

Have you tried a "chkdsk?" It may just be a corrupt system file that's causing the extreme process usage.

Also, your Graphics Card could simply be pooched. Is there an onboard card that you can test with to see?

I am currently running a Gigabyte GA-7N400 Pro 2 (Rev 2)with an AMD XP 3200+ and 1 gig of Kingston DDR 400 RAM (2x512). I want to upgrade my RAM to 2 gigs of Kingston Hyper-X, but in order to do that I need to find the CAS and Latency settings in my BIOS so I can match the timings to what they are supposed to be for that RAM, since they default to 3. I know the settings are there, but once in the BIOS I forgot how to get into them!! I tried Gigabyte support and, in all honesty, I figure that since they haven't answered me in the past week, the chances are they aren't going too:cry So, does anyone know the secret of getting those settings to come up? THANKS!!!

Answer:Finding 'Secret' Settings

If you email them, they'll never get back to you. Especially for such an old mobo. However, you can try this:

Greetings! I hope this is the right place for this, but I have a problem. I wanted to hide certain files in the searches. First, I made a folder, and then I made a locking device that had a secret folder attached to it (the secret folder could only be accessed once I had entered the password I had chosen, and locked again after I was done). However, any files I put in there would still show up in search in the folders above it. So, I hid them, and made it so that hidden files would be shown. However, this applied to the folder above it as well, unfortunately, with no option to make it particular to that folder. I tried making the secret folder hidden, but then the locking device messed up so I had to redo that step. So, I removed this folder from the index, as was suggested. But the stuff still showed up in the searches. There is one solution, but I really dislike it. I have to go to folder options, and then choose "don't show hidden files/folders" every time I am done. But there has to be an easier way than that! If I have to leave quickly and I forget to change it back or have no time, my files will be exposed to others! Please tell me how to create a folder that contains files that will be shown only in the folder and not in searches from outside the folder. I already know how to password protect it, but you can still access the files within through search on the outside. Thanks!

Answer:Secret Folders/Files

Put all the files you want to hide in a folder and then encrypt the folder.

I have been receiving emails lately that I consider spam; so, thought the best way to eliminate these emails would be to block the sender. However, when I try to copy the sender's email, there is no email address; only a few words or a title. Example: &#9733;100DayLoans&#9733;. Please advise how I can find the sending email address so that I might block the address.

My son introduced me to Mass Effect, which I was playing via Origin. Then the password would not work, so my son changed it. I got back in and got as far as the financial District in the Citadel, then the password stopped working. I had tried offline several times it did not work.

So I spent an half hour trying to sign into origin under my own name, and it refused me for a long time, so changed my log in and got in. Tried to download a freebie (Syberian 2) to see what it was like and lo and behold, a damn direct x error (this is the millionth time via origin). So I binned that and eventually found somewhere to delete my account , even THAT did not work, so I removed everything I could find in my pc on 'origin' and decided to forget Origin. A waste of virtual space.

Now my question: WHERE can I get a runable copy of Mass Effect (not any of the latest, the original) to run on my pc. Before I lose what little of my sanity I have left.

Answer:Origin (or lack of)

I have not had issues with Origin maybe you should contact EA support. They have always been helpful to me.

If you dont want to try that, try it on Steam

When I open Origin it starts an update for the sims 4 and gets to 523.89mb of 2.02gb and freezes my whole computer where I have to restart it by the power button. ctrl, alt, del wont work either will ctrl, shift, esc. I have uninstalled origin several times, I have done a restore point, ran virus scans, ran chkdsk, defrag and they all came back saying the pc is running great. other games like star trek online works and so do movies, web browsing and my music. I have chatted with origin(ea) and they want me to open origin even after I explain what that will do. It was working just fine the past few days and when I opened it today is when all my problems started. I am trying to play the sims 4 and origin says there is an update but that's about as far as I get before it freezes. I have also tried it on my administrator screen and in safemode with the same results. I am hoping someone can help me.

Does anyone know if there is a way to recover a TOR account that was merged with another Origin account?

Long story short: I had two Origin accounts. One I created when I bought Mass Effect 3, and the other one I didn't even realize I had. Apparently this one was created without my knowledge when I bought TOR years ago. I called Origin to have what I thought was the empty account deleted and they said they could just merge it with my main one. I figured they knew what they were doing, who was I to argue? Sure, I said.

Apparently the "empty" account was tied to my TOR account, and when it was merged my three TOR characters and expansions became inaccessible.

Has anyone else experienced this and found a way to recover the TOR account? I'm shocked they would offer to "merge" accounts without telling me it would delete characters and games. (How is that even considered a merger anyway?)

Any input would be appreciated.
