How to check for disk errors using Check Disk

Question: How to check for disk errors using Check Disk

Running the Computer Check Disk Function
Step 1
Determine whether you are using Windows XP or Windows Vista. XP users can simply click on the "Windows Start Button" and then go to the "Run" link. Once run pops up type in "CMD" and hit enter which will cause the MS DOS prompt to appear. Type in "CHKDSK /r" which will check for hard disk errors. Vista users need to click on "Start" then go to "Accessories" followed by "System Tools" and then run the MSDOS program followed by "CHKDSK /r"
Step 2
Insert your restore CD if errors are found and not fixed by the check disk function listed above.
Step 3
Turn your computer off and then back on. You'll be asked to hit any button to boot from your CD; press any key. You will then be asked if you want to install a fresh version of your OS or "Repair" a current copy. Choose the "Repair" option and allow the computer to go through the necessary steps.
Step 4
After the repair function has run, turn your computer off and then back on. Wait and see if the computer shuts down again. If it does not shut down, your computer's restore function has fixed the file, which was probably caused by a bad system file.
Fixing Computer Shut Downs Via The Power source
Step 1
Check if your power source is properly connected inside your computer. Your power source is the large box that your computer's power cable plugs into. If this connection becomes loose, it can lead to power down issues.
Step 2
Unplug your power source and plug it back in. Also make sure that the correct power setting "The little red tab on the back of the box" is set to the proper manufacturer's defaults. If you have any doubt what this setting should be, call the manufacturer for assistance.
Step 3
Have your power source tested at a local computer store if the issue persists. A computer tech can check for any faults in the power source and tell you if you need to purchase a new power source.
Fix Your Computer With Virus and Spyware Apps
Step 1
Download a virus scan if you don't already have one on your computer. "AVG" is a great free option as well as a Spyware App such as Adware, which can be found at Download.com (see Resources).
Step 2
Install both your virus scan and spyware applications by following the simple installation instructions.
Step 3
Run both the virus scan and spyware applications and tell the programs to "Heal or Remove" any infections that are found. This should help with shutdown issues if your computer is infected by certain programs

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

As of late my PC has been going very slow, stuttering, freezing for a minute occasionally, and sometimes when I restart I get a disk read error that requires me to turn the PC off and on again. I ran check disk using command prompt, it got to 12% before it said it had found corrupt files, now it gets up to 37% verification before it finds corrupt files but cannot repair them.

I tried running system repair from the windows 7 disk, but it fails. I've used western digital to run tests on my hard drive, but there were no problems found.

dont know how to fix this now, i've been told its probably the hard drive failing but the scan says otherwise. I can really tell how it takes a lot longer to boot up, log in, even open internet browser takes a lot longer than before.

help appreciated

Answer:Check disk failing, disk read errors, blue screen, computer going slow

Are you running the Western Digital Data Lifeguard CD ISO (extract first) burned to CD using WIndows Image burner, then booted to run the Extended Scan? This should give you a definitive diagnosis of the HD, which appears from the Disk CHeck to be failing.

If the HD checks out I would do is try a perfect test Clean Reinstall to the same or another HD to know for sure.

Hello!

So I recently installed Windows 7 Home Premium on an Acer Aspire 5349. I've been having a bunch of issues with it since the install.

Firstly, When I boot, it takes me to the "Disk Check" screen and tells me that one of my disks needs to be checked for consistency. However, the disk in question isn't something like "C:" or "D:" it's "\\?\volume{c4afec15-cb60-11e4-9583-806e6f6e6963}". The disk check also automatically cancels. It doesn't prompt me with the usual " Press any button to stop the disk check" option, just straight to " Disk check has been cancelled"

When I eventually get to the desktop, I get the screen " Windows detected a hard disk problem ". I look at the details and I'm told that my C:\ drive has been reporting failures. When I check the status of the disk via the Disk Management tool I'm told that all my partitions are healthy.

When I actually use the laptop, it's very slow and frequently freezes. It takes a while to catch back up and sometimes these freezes lead to a BSOD. The BSOD message was KERNEL_DATA_INPAGE_ERROR. I checked the event viewer and it also seemed that before certain crashes I would have driver controller error on an IDE Port. I've attached a picture of the disk check screen, event viewer, and memory dump. I apologize about the quality of the pictures, I couldn't screenshot the images on the actual laptop as it was freezing and crashing too often.

Question: Disk check errors

I have an old Gateway pc running Windows XP that I haven't used for awhile. When I power it up it runs a disk check but I get the following messages and don't know what it means or what to do. The screen reads:
\config.msi\(figure for 'phi') vk.n invalid time stamp

vk.n is cross-linked on allocation unit 65535

I can't get anything beyond this. No cursor. No Start icon - nothing.

Is there anything I can do to get this thing working again??

Question: Check Disk Errors

Greetings,
I am running a pre-installed version of Windows Vista Home Premium 32 Bit system on my HP laptop. As of the last month and a half, every time i power up my system, it tells me that i need to run a disk check on my C drive. I allow it, but unfortunately, it only gets to 21% of stage two every time before it locks up. The only solution is to power down and then skip the check next time it loads. I want to back up my hard drive to my external, but my computer won't allow it as it says one or more files are corrupted. A system restore is out of the question as i'm not exactly sure when the problem began. My virus scan and spyware detector have found nothing harmful on my computer. Please help.
Thanks,
Mat Stokes

Please help,

Answer:Can not check disk for errors!

Dont worry about it, NTFS solves any little system problems on the fly, if there is anything it needs the drive dismounted for it will scan before you boot up as required, there's not really a great need to run checkdisk manually.

Is it necessary to check errors on a SD card or a USB? I know it dont need to be defrag.

Answer:Disk Check for errors on SD Cards & USB

Yes, memory cards and usb storage devices can & should be checked for errors using the same method as you do for internal hard drives. However, in the case of memory cards, Windows will detect any errors on it when you insert it in a card reader and will ask you if you want the errors fixing. If Windows repeatedly tells you a memory card or USB pen drive has errors after it has just fixed them, it means that storage media is faulty and should be replaced.

It is also saying that C:\$Mft is also currupt and to fix that. I'm at a complete loss as to what I ned to do. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Answer:Check disk and weird errors---help!

Back your computer up... now. Just in case. Random errors can be a sign that your hard drive is dying. Your hard drive should have diagnostic tools, if not you can download them from the hard drive manufacturer. We have many listed here, but need to know what hard drive you have if your unsure how to proceed.

Okay, I've got yet another problem just only days after I've restored my OS and all my data. The thing is that whenever my PC starts up, it automatically starts to disk check even when my PC doesn't need it or I won't want it. And when I want to start the PC in safe mode, the drivers don't load...it ALWAYS stop at something called crc or something like that. It freezes and the Microsoft loading screen stays loading and it won't move anywhere.

Is this PC beyond repair?

Answer:Okay...This time...it's Disk Check errors...or something else. -.-

System Restore gives me the following error when I try to go back to a restore point: "The disk Local Disk (C:) has errors. Windows has detected file system corruption on Local Disk (C:). You must check the disk for errors before it can be restored."

It then gives me a link that says "Check the disk for errors". When I click on this, it says "Windows can't check the disk while in use" and gives me an option to "Schedule disk check".

However, when I schedule the disk check for the next restart, and then restart my computer, the disk check freezes after checking 2% of the files. I'm also unable to cancel the disk check (the starting page says it can be canceled by pressing any key... this doesn't work!). I must have restarted my computer about 10 times, the disk check failing to cancel AND freezing every single time, before I figured out how to restart with the last successful configuration.

I currently can use Windows without any errors - there are just some recent minor bugs that I find incredibly annoying, which is why I was attempting to use System Restore.

Is there any way I can get System Restore and/or the Disk Check to work?

Dear Forum,

i have a Seagate (Western Digital) 3TB External Hard Disk Drive.

I just ran the Norton Tune Up tools and it checked my external hard drive and advised that I run a chkdsk.

Is there another program I could use?
How would I go about running a chkdsk then using the Windows prompt?

It is only a small question - but I am very unsure and when in doubt ask.

Answer:External drive - advised has errors - says to to run check disk

I surly would not let Norton run check disk.

This tutorial by Brink is what you are looking for.

Disk Check

I would also recommend NOT using Norton Tuneup or any other Tuneup Tool.
To me they are snakeware.

When I try to use Check disk on drive C: with the 'Automatically fix file system errors' box ticked and then press 'Start' I get the usual message that the disk check cannot be performed because the disk check utility needs exclusive access to some Windows files and asks 'Do you want to schedule this disk check to occur the next time you restart the computer?'

However, if I click on 'Yes' and then restart the computer, it boots straight into Windows without doing a disk check.

It used to work but for some reason does not work any more.

Any help would be appreciated.

Hi, I've tried a lot of things but nothing is working, I would greatly appreciate any help. About two months ago a blue screen would come up and then shut my computer down, which I've been able to work around. Now, not sure if it's connected, but it's not reading my cd drive (won't eject or read it in my burner), disk defragmenter says "Disk Defragmenter could not start", and check disk says "Windows was unable to complete the disk check." I've tried some things I've found on the web including running check disk from cmd which ran but didn't change anything; the volume came back not dirty, and I checked the logical manager and all in the services section. Thank you for your time.

Hi everyone.

Going crazy with this. So about 2 weeks ago, my "intel rapid storage technology" software gave me an error. I opened it and saw that one of the disks (2 disk array) in my Raid 0 array, had an error. I reset it back to normal and left it. Then I started to get pop ups saying that files were corrupt over the course of the next few days. My OS still worked and everything worked as usual, except my sound card. I have no more sound from anything plugged into the jacks, only USB connected audio works.

So, I attempted to run a check disk to fix said errors, but I get a message that the drive is not accessible due to a recent software package install "error 766f6c756d652e63 3f1". I went into my system restore and all restore points are gone, except one. When I click on it, it says the drive is not accessible.

Today, I installed 2 new 1TB hybrid drives in another Raid 0 volume (yes I know...but that's what I am using for now). When I went to write the system image, it said the disk had errors and to run a check disk first......which I can not.. I clicked ignore and let it go and write the system image with the errors. When it is done, do you think that I will be able to run a check disk on the new drives (2nd array, since it will not be inaccessible) to repair the errors that it wrote from the bad disk?

I am not sure where to go from here. My PC is still up and running and almost finished copying the image to the two new drives. My hopes are th... Read more

Computer -> Right Click Hard Drive -> Click Properties -> Click Tools.

From there I get the Disk Check option. However After opening the file it does not run. No matter what is or is not checked the file will not run.

The program instantly closes out. Even when I try to set it so that it will run on the next start up. The file will close out without showing the confirmation box.

Now, when I do restart I go to my log in page, but not until after seeing a page for a brief moment, it looks like the page you see after completeing a disk check at start up.

Used the windows install DVD to check for errors in windows and to see if anything needed repairing, came back as everything was fine.

Disk Drive Error and Freezing during Disk Check

Lately I've found that my computer will more or less randomly switch to a blue screen that says "An error has occurred and Windows has been shut down to prevent damage." or something to that extent.

The only troubleshooting help I got was to run a disk check upon startup to check for errors, but I have tried twice now and the disk check freezes at 55 percent!

The freezes occurred first while defragmenting and I believe this happened after I deleted (without uninstalling, my mistake) a large file group (Steam, an online gaming prog that runs upon startup for things like HL2.)
I am not sure how this could have effected things, but that was the last significant thing I remember donig before noticing this. I have not downloaded any drivers recently.

My Norton and AVG virus scans turned up nothing.

I have backed up most of my needed files onto CD just in case, but I'd rather NOT format my hard drive unless there's nothing else I can do.

When I tried to do the Seagate drive diagnostic it said that "SMART self-test is not supported for this drive. This may be due to a limitation in teh Windows driver for the controller that the drive is attached to or the drive may not support the SMART self-test. In either case, this is not a failure of the drive."

I ran a different seagate test and it said there was a "Bad Connection" Error.

Hey Guys,
I've been pulling my hair out trying to figure out what my problem is. Basically, we had an issue with the computer and so we force restarted it at one point about a month ago. After that, we started getting requests to run a check disk after every time the computer was rebooted. The check disks take 20+ hours for some reason on this computer, and we cannot afford to have it down that long since it is a work computer. We cancelled the disk check and afterwards we noticed that the hard drive was filling itself up. The computer has a 450gb hard drive and after a couple of hours it was telling us that there were only 2mb of space left (we have maybe 20gb of data on the computer total). This is the point in which I stepped in and ran a disk cleanup and deleted all of the old system restore points. It gave us about a gb of space so I left it alone (I didn't realize at this point what the problem was, just thought it was too much stuff on the comp). The next day the computer's user told me it was the same problem and I knew that she wasn't using all of the space that I had found so I checked it out again. Once again, it was giving me the low disk space error. I decided to download and install Windirstat to see what was taking up all the space. When I run Windirstat, it tells me that 430gb of the 450gb of space is "Unknown". After that, I shut it down and let it run the check disk completely over the course of a weekend. It ran for about a week after... Read more

Answer:Windows 7 No Disk Space after Disk Check Cancellation

Likely the file system was messed up by the forced restart, a rare but possible occurence.

So the unknown used space may be failed attempts to copy data over to repair the file system. This is why it's always advised to back up data before doing a Disk Check and of course data should always be backed up anyway against HD failure - which itself cannot be ruled out here.

I would test the HD with the maker's HD Diagnostic extended CD scan, followed by a Disk Check done from the Win7 disk or Repair CD's System Recovery Options Command Line which doesn't depend upon the OS on a potentially scrambled file system.

When you click them they open a cmd window, dont close that window. Be patient that window will dissapear by itself. These advanced shortcuts are the best free defraggers there are. To get better you would need to buy something like PerfectDisk, so dont bother with defraggler etc...

Any ideas of causes and solutions?

Thanks in advance.

Hello Tech Support Guy, I was thinking to make my computer faster and lose some space, so i went ahead and did a Error-checking and got the Vista Permission thing and continued and i checked Automatic fix file system errors and scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors then pressed start and nothing happen , i ran Check Disk with admin cmd and works. I rebooted my computer to see if chkdsk works and its not theen tried to do the error-checking and still doesnt work. Then when i tried to use my Disk Defragmenter , i waited till the analysis finished then i got the thing that said your file performance can be improved, defrag now. And i clicked which disk i want to defrag and press ok , nothing happened and juss went back to analysis then your file performance can be improved, defrag now. btw i tried to use Defraggler and ran as a admin when i click analyze, nothing happens and i looked at the status and says Analysis failed, i even tried juss going defrag and the status said building file list failed.
PLEASE HELP ME GUYS! iv been stressing cuhs of my computer

Hey guys.

My disk defrag and Check disk are not working.

I can bring up both programs, but when I attempt to either Analyze, Defrag, or Start Scan, respectively, a error pops up, saying "Windows was unable to complete the disk check" and "Disk Defragmenter does not start"

I don't believe it is virus-related as I have ran the Malwarebytes program and nothing has come up. I also ran Trend Micro and nothing has popped up either.

I also wonder if it has anything do with my MP3 issue.

I doubt it, but if anyone can help me out with either situation, I'd appreciate it.

Thanks in advance, folks.

I'm getting a lot of "Check Disk for Errors" and "this hard drive needs to be formatted before it can be used" error messages when plugging my external usb hard drives into my home pc which uses windows 7. I don't get any of these messages when I plug the same hard drives in at any of a number of pcs at work which use windows xp. Any ideas on why this is happening only with windows 7? I'm also getting a lot of disconnects and reconnects on these devices but again only on windows 7.

I'm guessing your trying to complete a chkdsk ?.

If so, You can not do it whilst windows is booted. Unless it's not the primary OS drive.

Have you tried doing it from command prompt? And it should say " Windows will complete the chkdsk upon restart " ?

My ex gfs laptop is on the frits. Blue screen of death, and now she is unable to boot. It seems to freeze at the point right before the log in screen, just with a black screen.
She lives in a remote location, and I'm not sure she has access to any blank cds to make a boot disk, or a windows disk.
I've had her laptop fixed to the point of working before by running a disk check /f, then a defragment and virus scan. But it's old and she seems to make it crap out.

What are her options? She's unable to boot to safe mode, or safemode with command prompt.. I told her to leave it be for now as she's had a bsod before from the laptop overheating.

Thanks in advance for any help.

I scheduled a disk check for my next system restart. After the disk check had completed it started to run the disk check again and I had to stop it. Now, whenever I have a restart disk check is initiated and more often than not pressing any key to skip the disk check doesn't work and I turn off the computer when disk check starts to run. This starts the process all over again and I have to repeat it until pressing a key prior to initiating the disk check successfully cancels the disk check

I am trying to run a check disk to check for errors before I send a hijack this log per your site instructions.

Everytime I try to run one, it tells me that the files are in use and would I like it to run next time I restart. I said yes. Then it restarts, says a check disk has been scheduled, the check disk has been cancelled, windows has finished checking the disk.

I tried to run from safe mode with command prompt, and also by pressing f8 at start up and running through the command prompt but it says again that the files are in use and do I want to run next time I restart. I say yes, and it does the same thing and cancels the check disk. I have also tried to run it bo going to computer, OS © properties, does the same thing.

I cannot seem to figure out how to get it to run and not keep cancelling itself.

Answer:Cannot run check disk

Chkdsk requires exclusive access to a volume when it runs. Therefore, if one or more of the files are open on the disk that you want to check, Chkdsk displays a prompt asking if you want schedule the disk check for the next time that you restart your computer. If you're infected, it might possibly be that the infection is not letting you run chkdskOpen Task Manager and in the applications window, end all tasks. Then start a new task and type explorer.exeSee if you can run it thenIf not, you might have to go ahead and run the HJT/DDS scan anyways

Hi

If the drive is starting to go bad then I would really start looking at a new drive and most of all backing up your data.

What you can use is some of the tools HERE but also find out what make and model HDD you have and see if the maker has a drive tool, many do.

Try this HERE also to check the SMART status of your drive

Question: Check Disk?

Hello, friends,

I have been trying to clean up and maintain the computer my kids use. It's a Dell Dimension 4300 desktop, running Windows XP Home Edition, Service Pack 2, Pentium 4, with an 80GB harddrive and it is updated to the best of my knowledge. It has tons of empty space on the drive, so I know for certain that's not the issue. Before I started any of my maintenance, I turned off System Restore. I've run everything in Safe Mode and in the separate accounts in regular mode:

Symantec found nothing.
Spybot - found CasaleMedia - which I deleted. I also blocked that site in both IE and Firefox after deleting all cookies and temporary files. I then searched for it on the drive and found nothing (which I know also means nothing ).
AdAware - found nothing.
Spyware Blaster is updated and running.
I ran Defrag several times.

But the computer refuses to run a check disk - no matter where I am (safe mode or accounts). I always heard that you have an issue if the disk check won't run. I had thought in the past that disk space was the main issue, but I know that's not a problem on this system. Any ideas? Am I being paranoid for nothing??

Thanks, guys, for all of your help!

JF

Hi Tech Guys,

I've looked up other postings for this problem, however I can't find a solution for my sister's case. Thank you for your understanding.

Here's my problem. When my sister went to boot up her computer, an error message came up saying:

"Checking file system on C:
The type of the file system is NTFS.

One of your disks needs to be checked for consistenscy. You may cancel the disk check, but it is strongly recommended that you continue.
To skip disk checking, press any key within 1 second(s)."

The seconds would change, etc. However everytime she would try to cancel it, it would go back to the same screen and now the computer's not responding at all, not even allowing for reboot. Even as I type this the screen went black. I'm not sure if it's the battery at this point. Please help us!

The computer's info:

Hi, have you tried repeatedly pressing F8 on boot?

This will hopefully give you a list of all possible boot options including Safe Mode.

If you can get in to Safe Mode, I would recommend trying a repair install and see if that helps in stopping Disk Check.

I wish you all the best of luck.

My laptop contracted the "Check Disk" malware (virus? trojan?) and I was reading up here on how to remove it. However the next time I re-booted, I saw a screen with two choices: 1) Launch Startup repair (recommended); and 2) Launch Windows normally. If I try to launch normally the machine just restarts and comes up with the same screen over and over. If I choose the first option, I see windows with the following choices:
-System recovery options (asks me to select keyboard)
-Next window says "restore using a system image created earlier, OR Use recovery tools -- select operating system (there are no operating systems listed to choose from). This leads to eventually restarting and the original screen comes up.

If I try tapping F8 and choose "safe mode" the machine just restarts. I also tried downloading MBam and Rkill onto a CD and put it in the machine, but there doesn't seem to be any way to access the drive. It would sure be nice to save all the music, photos and documents on this machine.

Any ideas for me? I am only moderately computer literate, so be gentle with me!

Question: Disk Check

Well I'm back. Once again, I plead for help...

Another strange thing is happening......Had a problem with my Bell Security Manager, it showed as being corrupt and unreadable...Said to run ChkDsk Utility.

As for Bell Security Manager I removed it from system.

So, I ran the ChkDsk Utility. Said it would run disk check at startup....Restarted computer....Disk check started and then cancelled itself....Tried again, same result.

So, can't get disk check to run to completion...

Then I decided to try this:

Go to MY COMPUTER
right click local disk, which is "C"
to Properties
to Tools
to Error Checking
check Now box
check on Automatically fix file systems errors
Hit Start

At completion restart computer and got same result.....Begins disk check and cancels itself.

I am sitting at the computer, scratching my head and moaning....It is not a pretty sight.

Please, any ideas?

Much Thanks....

When i tried this i got the message there are errors on the disk cannot be complete. So i tried running check disk which then told me i cannot run while c is in use. So i clicked the schedule a check disk. Which is supposed to start when i restart my computer the next time. The problem is when i restarted my computer the check disk never runs. How can i force my computer to run check disk. I also tried starting in safe mode with command prompt and typing chkdsk /f and the same thing happened.

Hi... A week ago, I ran Check Disk on my old, corrupted hard-drive to see if it could help me access anything left on it. (physically, a different hard-drive than my system. its five years old)

While still in Windows, I left it overnight.
I rebooted later and it started another scan before windows booted. I let it be.
Thankfully, things are a bit better since the scan.
But now it tries scanning before loading Windows all the time.
I like to turn my comp on in the morning, and go do things while it loads. I dont want to stand around to 'press any key' to cancel the scan.

How do I get this to stop? There wasn't even a visible option to scan at boot to begin with.

Also, what is the longevity of an average hard-drive? (I always end up with a Maxtor)
Should I buy a new one every five years?
My old drive likes to tell me 'the disk in drive F isnt formatted..." all the time.
But thats getting off this topic...

Thanks

Answer:Check Disk won't go away

It won't stop because it keeps detecting problems on the drive. If you really want it to stop pull the drive out.

Question: Check Disk

I'm going through the recommended procedures, but the check disk will not run. After rebooting the PC starts up normally, then the blue screen with check disk appears for a second or two but is to quick to read what it it says. I also tried to run by going to Start>Run>OK, but the result is the same as above.
What can I do to rectify this problem? Thank you

Answer:Check Disk

Can you tell us exactly what recommended procedures...you tried which result in a No-Go?

You tried Start/Run...type chkdsk /r, with a space between the k and the /...and hit Enter or OK?

If you are trying to run the chkdsk on any drive other than C:, then you have to add the drive (e.g., G:) between the k and the blank space...before hitting Enter/OK.

Question: Check Disk

Hello- I am running Windows XP Pro X86. On occasion, I run a Disk Check, using the 'automatically fix file system errors' and 'attempt to recover bad sectors' options in My Computer> Local Disk> Properties> Tools. As of late, the screen freezes black after the CHKDSK is complete and the system reboots, forcing me to do a hard shut down. Could someone please offer some advice on how to remedy this? Thank you.

Answer:Check Disk

Don't know what is causing the freeze, but here is a work around.

First, you can turn OFF the Automatic restart for System Failure:

Control Panel > System > Advanced tab :

In the Startup and Recovery box, click Settings
In the System failure box, Uncheck Automatic restart

Try running Chkdsk from the Recovery Console.
If the Recovery Console is not already in your Startup Menu, you can use these instuctions:
How to install the Recovery Console to your hard drive

To run Chkdsk in the Recovery Console and do exhaustive check of the drive and correct any errors:
chkdsk /P

To run Chkdsk in the Recovery Console and ALSO Locate bad sectors and recover readable information:
chkdsk /R

Try /P first as it is Much quicker.

Question: Check Disk

CHKDSK runs at bootup. How do I switch it off, please?

Answer:Check Disk

It should only run once but if you cancel it next time you reboot it will try again until completed.
Also ensure you don't have any external drives connected, it might be trying to check them, if connected.
