Came across this article that might be useful for others.
"In this article we will describe logical data recovery from a hard disk drive or other storage device in perfect physical conditions. I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi, anyone know of a program that will data recover MPEG-2 movies that were accidentally removed from my Recycle Bin? I have tried several programs, including Recover My Files, GetDataBack, Stellar Phoenix - one found no files, the other found 1300 files (where there should only be about 10), and the other found the right amount, but the files themselves were absolutely huge, so it must have merged the missing MPEG-2s to some of the other movies that weren't deleted.

Can anyone please suggest a way out of this, either by naming a program that can recover MPEG-2s, or a setting that I need change on one of the progs that I've already tried?

Thank you.

Hi there people. First post so sorry if it's in the wrong place or anything. I've had as much of a search as I can and haven't found anyone with quite the same situation as me. The questions come at the end of the rambling background to my problem!!! Hope you can make it through to the end! My E520 recently just went beyond it's warranty and surprise surprise fairly soon after that I got a warning through ThinkVantage that there was a problem with my internal hard drive. When I googled the problem it said that the hard drive was going to fail and to replace it immediately.  As I (like an idiot) hadn't got round to backing up my computer properly (I'd saved all music, photos and videos to a seperate hard drive but hadn't done a Rescue and Recovery or Windows back up) I went out and bought a seperate hard drive to back up the computer and some disks to create the recovery boot disks.  When I went to the Q drive to do this I misunderstood the question about do I want to create a data back up disk. I thought this meant all my media so I said no and created just the boot recovery disks.  So my question (told you I'd get there) is this. When I replace the internal hard drive and use the boot disks to install windows will I then be able to use the Lenovo Rescue and Recovery to restore my computer to it's former glory? Or will the fact that I'm not restoring the Lenovo skin (sorry if my terminology is wrong here. Not sure what to call it) ... Read more

I had Rescue and Recovery going on a N100-0768 laptop using Vista Business.  Recently that laptop was stolen.  I've purchased a G550 with W7Pro.  Now I cannot install Rescue and Recovery 4.3 for W7 because apparently this G550 isn't in the list of supported Lenovo systems.  I need the critical data I've backed up - how do I access that data? Thanks so much in advance. I do miss the N100 - it was a great laptop!    - James Head

Answer:Rescue and Recovery - Need to restore data

Have the same problem myself, there is no available download for OneKey Recovery for WIn 7 64bit. I had the 32Bit RC Build 7100 installed previously and used the Vista version and it worked OK before, no such luck with the 64bit version. I'm irritated right now as I also need to back-up critical data, I'm using the Window back-up and Win Rescue disk but  it defeats the purpose of having the OneKey Recovery Key.

Just sharing this.
I made another boo-boo today and deleted 500GB worth of media files (just movies and music). Don't ask me how because that's something nobody wants to do.

I don't keep a backup of these files. For me these are disposable files. But it would be nice if there's a way to get them back easily. And luckily, there is.

This is the 3rd time this software has saved me. The MiniTool Power Data recovery. The first one was accidental deletion of an entire partition. The second time was also accidental deletion of big files. Accidental=stupidity for me. But hey, things happen whether you like it or not.

Today I am not recovering a partition but rather "undeleting the 500GB+ of files"..

It will take probably a few hours before this process gets done.
So, to avoid stressing out the hard drive (Seagate 2TB external drive) due to heat, I placed 4 USB fans around it.

To those who are accidentally wiping out their hard drives while testing out Win 10 TP, there is a simple solution and I highly recommend this software. The good thing about this recovery software unlike other software, you can get your files back in the same organized manner you lost them with original filenames and folder tree intact. And the best thing is, I got this software FREE from a Giveaway!

Cheers!

Answer:MiniTool Power Data Recovery to the rescue!!!

I hope they all get recovered for you. Good job with the fans.

Hello, I have a problem with my backup and I have no more ideas how to retrieve my data from that backup:I use an external hard disk to backup my system and my system crashed last month. I took the opportunity and did some changes to my new system: I switched from 32bit to 64bit Windows 7 and instead of using two partitions I now only use one drive.I then tried to restore my data from my backup but I could not find my two previous partitions - only one (the system drive C:\). But the data I really want is on the second drive and it is actually there: If I search the external disk, I find the folder "D" with all that "data"-files. If I switch the name of these previous drives I alse get the file-tree displayed in R&R but I cannot restore the data. I guess it's because the files' paths are written in that TOCFILE and if I change the root...I then tried to use a symlink but my external disk does not support it, so I tried to copy the data to my hard disk but R&R did not even show that backup (don't know what I have to do to make R&R do so: I tried to put it in the folder where R&R creates all the backups, that is RRbackups).  I also tried to restore my whole previous system but it can only restore one drive (again the old C-drive) and gives me an error: "one or more partitions could not be restored because the partition does not exist". So it seems as if some reference to a path or the like might be broken? Perhaps you know how to unpack these... Read more

My t61p has the GPU (1 long 2 short beeps) problem described in another thread. Apart from getting the laptop fixed, which will take several weeks, I have a more pressing problem getting my data back from this laptop.I have been using Lenovo Rescue and Recovery religiously for the last two years to create monthly incremental backups on a USB drive. While I am trying to get my laptop repaired, I would like to at least recover my files from the backup and start working on a different machine.I was told by Lenovo support that the only way to get to the data is to connect the drive to another T61p, running the exact same version of Rescue and Recovery I had on my original T61p. For one, I have to idea what version of R&R  I had on my laptop. Secondly, I am in no position to get another T61p just to recover the data.I would have thought that there would be a version of R&R that I could run on any Windows machine, and recover the data, but apparently that's not so.Does anyone have any suggestions about how I can recover my data? Thanks.

So, the problem is simple, i lost my data because i used the software without a backup (i was distracted).. Is there any way to recover it ?
I'm trying with GetDataBack, but i found nothing.
As extreme idea, could laboratories of recovery hard disk work effectively?

Answer:Recover data after a recovery?

Generally speaking before recovery installation starts whole HDD will be formatted and new partitions will be defined. All data saved on HDD will be deleted.

Anyway as far as I know you can recover deleted data using some third part application.

Hi Friends,

I'm new to this forum. A few days back, I was installing updates of Flash Player when my system hanged and when I tried to reboot, it 'Bluescreened' displaying the error message and blocked me from accessing Windows environment altogether, not even from Safe Mode or Command Prompt. It did not let me with no option but to use Access IBM, as I never made any Backup files, I wanted to save all my Data Files on an external Disk Drive before restoring my system to Factory Content. But Rescue Files option in 'Restore and Recovery' isn't showing any of my saved Folders in C: drive, infact it is not even showing 'My Documents and Settings' folder. As all my extremely important data is stored in my HDD, without any backup, I'm set to lose everything. Kindly suggest is there any other option which could retrieve my data?

Thanks to all, I will appreciate your support greatly.

Hi,
i have a toshiba P20, when i have buy it, i have made 2 partition, C to OS and program and F to my personnal data.

i have use the toshiba restoration tools in order to restore my windows XP OS, but the restore tools has also reset my partition table and i don't know if i can restore my personal data.

All is done in one step and i have not seen of warning to say that my partition table will be reset?

It's a really format which has been done or just a fdisk /

Can i use a tools to restore the data of my lose partition ?

i hope that there is an acceptable solution to this problem and in a near future i will buy an external HD to perform backup.

Answer:P20: Can I recover data after recovery procedure?

Hello Alex

If you want to preinstall the unit with recovery media you can do this on two different ways:
- standard mode ? the whole HDD will be formatted and after recovery procedure on the HDD is just one partition.
- expert mode ? using this mode you can create partitions if the HDD has just one, and you will be able to install OS on first partition (the second one stays)

Obviously you have done it using standard mode and now the whole HDD is formatted. I am not 100 % sure but in this case just fast format is done before the installations procedure begins. Try to find out (Google) if there is any tool that can help you to check if all data are gone. Using recovery media there is no way to do this.

External HDD is good solution for data saving.

Bye

My T60P 8744-C9U hard drive died.  Test: BIOS encounters read errors when doing a  test - WinXP boot cd cannot find C drive. But fortunately I did frequent backups to a USB external drive .... hum.....So - HOW DO I RESTORE THE DATA FROM THE USB EXTERNAL DRIVE THAT WAS CREATED WITH R&R onto my other computer so I can work - a desktop - Quad XP 64 - not a Lenovo product !!!

Answer:Rescue and Recovery - How do I restore data to another comptr since my laptop hard drive crashed???

You're not going to be able to do a complete restoration onto a totally different computer, but you should be able to connect your external drive to the desktop and retrieve specific files and folders.

The only way to do a complete restoration is to get a new drive for the T60, download R&R and restore from the backup, unless you burned recovery discs, then you could restore from those and then use the backup.

Due to ignorance of procedures i used the Start up CD for Windows98 and it deleted everything(am not sure if deleted is the correct term but the 'cake' showing the used amount of memory was hardly eaten.)Following suggestion on this forum i have downloaded Drive rescue and would appreciate help making the lost files usuable again.I am now at the stage where the program is giving me lots of options but i dont understand whether i am looking for deleted stuff or lost stuff etc. I have run the option of finding lost data which has given me what appear to be files called 'cluster' with a 7figure number added. How for example do i recover all the info that was in Outlook Express before ruined it?NB I am sending this using a new pc but want help restoring the info on the old win98 system. Hello - just joined and have had a Lenovo T500 running Windows 7 for less than a year.  Currently, I am attempting to rescue all of my files through the Rescue and Recovery space that I access through pressing F11 during startup.  My computer will not startup due to a potential hardware issue (another issue entirely), so Rescue and Recovery is the only screen I am able to access, other than BIOS screen.  I have attached a external HDD via USB to my Lenovo to "rescue" all of my files and data.  When copying all of the C drive over, I continually get an error message of "access denied" for "App Data" under my user profile (password protected user account).  Is there a way through Rescue and Recovery to rescue App Data under my user profile even if it is password protected?  I plan to do a system restore once all files/data is copied to address the other issue I am encountering, which is most likely a hardware issue. Thanks for the help!

Hello, hope I come to the right place! Honestly, my Toshiba flash drive has been used for saving some videos, photos and files for several years. But, last night, I just formatted it by mistake and lost all my stored information. Honestly, I did have another copy of these files on my computer, but, some of the newly edited videos and several school documents have not been backed up yet. Is there any data recovery software that can help me take them all back? I did have searched a lot of the related problems over the internet and all of them recommend me to apply the related data recovery tools. But, I am not sure whether the related data recovery tool is really necessary? Do you have any similar experience? What am I supposed to do now? Thanks!

Answer:Satellite A210-11K - Can I recover my data before using the recovery disk?

Hi

You can backup your data if you put the HDD in an external HDD case. Then you can connect it to another notebook or PC and you can save the data on it or burn it on a DVD.
That?s all!

Such external HDD cases are very cheap. I have bought my external HDD case from eBay and it?s working well.

But there is no other way to save the data because the Toshiba recovery disk wipes the whole HDD and all on the HDD will be erased.

Windows XP Pro
Toshiba A25-S307
(Old!)

I reinstalled the OS and forgot to back up my GPS data files.
I let windows format the HD (60GB) during the installation process.

Is there any chance, sheer luck, that the files might be recovered?

I fiddled with Testdisk/photorec and boy, does it find files!
It was over 20,000 when I shut it down. It filled an 8GB flash drive.
Some of the pictures were definitely from the previous installation.
But no GPS files.
Maybe the program had not reached the sectors where they are?
Or it is not even looking for them?

My GPS files are .gdb and .gpx, neither of which appear on the list at cgsecurity.org
I looked at the instructions for adding custom signatures but it is beyond my understanding.
In general, this program is beyond my understanding.
I had trouble with the drive selection RE save location, but got it to work.

Also, I made a post, same topic, on the cgsecurity.org forum.

Any help appreciated. Thank you.

Answer:Recover GPS Data Files

Hi Senseless

I saw your post at cgsecurity and then found this one by searching here for 'gps files'. You used a different name there so I was pleasantly surprised to see it was you

At this point the difficulty with your situation stems from the fact that you've written a substantial amount of stuff to the drive that you are trying to recover from. I loathe telling someone to try a solution that they have to purchase as opposed to an open source solution but in this case it is probably your last best chance.

Try Restorer Ultimate in demo mode and see if you can find your files with it...
www.bitmart.net

It may see your old partition and it's structure prior to your format and reinstall.

If you can, you'll need to purchase it to do the recovery.

Hope this helps

I managed to contract a malware, how I have no clue, regardless it's infected with the "system restore" malware and will no longer boot into win 7. I have placed the hdd into an external enclusre however my user files have a lock on the file folder icon. How can I access the data using my external? Once I backup my data I am goig to dban the drive and start over.

I believe that you may just need to take ownership of the file. as long as you diddn't encrypt the home directory when the user was created.

Hopefully this helps.

I have a Lenovo IdeaCentre K210 desktop. My hard drive ran out of room and now will not boot. I tired using 'safe mode' to delete some old files and I did recover some extra hard drive space but it still will not boot. (The .exe file that starts the OS appears to be hidden in a special 'Lenovo created partition and I am unable to find it in safe mode.)

I hooked my hard drive to another computer (using a USB device) to recover my data files but all of my data files are missing my latest saves? I seems that Lenovo creates a special type of file or partition called 'dynamic buffer.' I can only assume that my most recent saves are located there and are placed on 'C drive' when I 'release the dynamic buffer' (of course did not happen when the hard drive became full.)

Lenovo web site has a 'recovery' program but (if I understand correctly) it reformats the hard drive and reinstalls the OS. If this is true, all my data would be losted.

My best solution would be to be able to 'boot up' from my hard drive. I tried the OS cd to repair the boot problem but apparently it does not know where the special .exe file is and nothing is fixed.

The second best solution would be to find a software program that can extract my data from my hard drive. Anyone know of one?

My Vista will not load, there is a bunch of errors and I don't even want to get to the bottom of fixing them. A format will do fine. However, prior to a format I'd like to recover my files. Ubuntu cannot open my hard drive due to a corrupt systemrestore file it seems. I would like a portable linux recovery application that will allow me to recover the files from my hard drive and save it onto my external.

So I was wondering if someone can point me in the right direction. My version of Ubuntu is 8.04

Answer:Had to use data recovery because recovery console wouldn't save data

Where did you save the data and did you test the saved data before doing the clean install?

Hi everyone..

My external USb Wd mybook box has 1 tb Seagate Sata 3 and i use original Wd disc as W7 installed... in My PC Case as sata II

Today my old problem appears again as Corrupted disc...
I have Get Data Back NTFS (and i used before plenty of times for recovery, loss data or unwanted deletions) but..

This time im stuck.. Becouse the disk i try to recover includes 870 gb (about) used disk space (only audio files) only 50gb (about) empty space... Thats too big for me to recover to other disks.. i don't have enough spaces that my other disks can handle..

I have about 300 gb FREE disk space in several disks or partitions include My thinkpad SL510 Notebook..
---------
So my question is
wit keeping my lost data in corrupted disk first, can i take them slowly to this 300 gb spaces (i know i can) and after create somehow emty space (deleting those recovered 300 gb + 50 on corrupted disk) and
use that empty space for more recovery. ???? Or smilar solutions.. Becouse DISC PRICES IS HEAVY nowadays and really i'm out of budget with buying some
equipments upgrades..
----------
IS THERE ANY PRACTICALLY POSSIBLE SOLUTION even can take very long time..
Like creating slowly slowly some extra spaces (don't know how)

I know i look silly in situation becouse i know u should never write to same disc if you dont want to say goodbye to your files..

E-how happened (not necessary to read these part)

according my experiences Thats the mistakes... DOn't do those at the same tim... Read more

Answer:Data recovery problem, Can reach corrupted data but no external space.

Hi,

Before you write more data or attempt to read data from the drive through Windows, I would suggest using a Live CD like SysRescueCD to boot from and access the HDD.

Dear Friends.
Hope this finds you well!
I'm not certain this is in the best forum, but it is a Windows 7 computer
I was trying to do another sets of DVD's from existing MP4 files from a SanDisk Ultra 32GB card. These would then be used with DVD Flick and ImgBurn to make the DVD's. The first(2) DVD's worked well but somehow a few of the files were not copied entirely. So, I was redoing these again to make certain I had ALL the files for the next (2) DVD's.
These are files my older brother entrusted to me for me to convert them to a DVD format. They are files of his daughters nearly entire basketball season [frames] of about 70 files and were sentimental to him and his daughter.
I feel personally responsible to correct this if it is at all possible!? It could get ugly
It was an honest error on my part as I mistakenly deleted what was titled Video 100 on the SanDisk which contained all these MP4 files. I didn't realize I was removing them from the SanDisk. I'm hoping there is a free date recovery app I could use for this one application so that an expensive license would not be required!?
Thank You in advance for your care, compassion and cooperation. I'm stuck in the mud...
Very Truly Yours,
Raphael

Can i recover my data after full format the hard disk on windows 7?

hi
i have a scSi disk 36.4GB, i lost information from it and tried to recover with other recovery softwares to no avail finally i got winhex & got the professional licence.

i can now be able to see all the information on the 1 whole NTFS partition, but the problem is that i can't be able to recover it.
when ever i open the logical drive i can see all the information and most of the information is stack up in a "free space" which is around 33gb which i can be able to see has all the information that i need.
i have tried to recover the free space but its only copied to the location that i specify and no recoveries are made.
recovering the files by type/ name has bore no fruits.

a freind told me i have to curve out that area and use data extractors to get the information out of that area (freee space).

the information in that drive are sql data bases and zip files. whats the header for sql.

what techniques do i use to curve out that space and be abele to extract the information, for i can even read the information in text format.

which are the data extractors available in the market

kindly assist its quite urgent i get this information out

Answer:data extractors / sql header [Hard Drive data recovery]

I don't know where this thread properly belongs -- but I suspect the question may be too esoteric for most here.

Since it involves data recovery from a hard drive I'm going to move it to Hardware, I think "all other software" is not likely to have anyone with this type of experience.

Answer:Minitool Power Data Recovery or Runtime Get Data Back, which

Hi

Both are good programs and i would recommend purchasing both ( if you can afford ). Both has it's own pros and cons.
"GetDataBack" is good at virtual reconstruction of damage/unrecognizable file systems but i personally found it weak at recovering image files. It recovers images but most of them seems to be corrupted in my testings. Also you need to purchase seperate versions for FAT and NTFS ( GetDataBack simple is garbage ).

On the other hand, "Power data Recovery" works with both FAT and NTFS and it is better at recovering image files. Another proven tools is "R-Studio" which has quiet good reputation among DR professionals. It's user interface is not newbie friendly but has lot's of options which no other tools offers.

Answer:Data Recovery of data from laptop hard drives

Am confused with your external kits part.... Anyway, I assume that you have a working lenovo laptop and a working desktop. You try to plug in the lenovo HDD into a USB drive kit and extract data from the desktop. 1) Is the lenovo HDD encrpted? Check the Bios and also if lenovo security software is installed. 2) The fastest way i do it nowadays is to connect both laptop and desktop to a network. Then share the disk drive(s) and extract data from either laptop or desktop. A second option is to remote access the laptop and extract the data. 3) Another possibility is that your laptop is XP, ie the formatting is not AHCI (check the bios under sata), it's in compatible mode. The desktop is using Vista or window 7?

But it was the first time that I had to run the recovery disk and I moved all my important documents to the second partition (E:) and then ran the recovery disk, thinking that it would only format the first partition (C:)...
Well I was wrong.

Can anyone please help me with a way to get the information on my second partition (E:) back?

Hi mate?

I?ve got bad news for you?
The HDD has been formatted by Recovery DVD and this means that all available partitions have been erased!

I?m sorry but I don?t see any options to get back the data :(

Of course there are many companies which are able to rescue the data on damage HDDs of after HDD formatting but in my opinion the costs would be immense?

Hi,

I have been using a Kingston 1gb data traveler to store work however as I was saving my word document to go home Word 2007 crashed and restarted itself, it did not however bring up any autorecover options. I therefore thought everything was ok and pulled out the USB. When I tried to plug this in again it says 'USB device not recognized' This device may have malfunctioned etc. It then proceeds to install the USB as an unknown device and appear like this in the device manager.

I desperately need to recover this data, I was designing a website and had 25 pages of text on the USB stick.

What I've Tried

Plugging the USB in another machine. This bought up exactly the same error

Downloading a Data Doctor Recovery Pen Drive tool. This however did not recognise a USB as being in the system and thus did not work.

Is there anything I can do to rescue this data?

P.s. I use Vista 32-bit Business.

I have 2 problems, mine is recovering data from a DVD-R & a friend is looking for my help in recovering data from a "corrupted" Flash Drive.

I was burning data on a DVD-R multiple sessions disk when my Burner crapped out while using Nero. I now have a new Burner & when I go back into this disk I can only read data from my 1st session when I compare the #s from Nero's disk info tool, however it also shows that session 5 is still open?? but I cannot read anything from sessions 2, 3 & 4. Looking around I spotted CD Recovery Tool Box Free 1.1.7 is there anything more recent and or better that would let me try to recover the data on this disk. The data in session 5 is still on my HD but I would like to be able to recover the data in the other sessions, worst possible case even just the file names would be a small plus.

Now for the Flash Drive. It is a Lexar 8 Gig & what supposedly happened is that Peter lent it to a fellow employee so he could extract some data (probably a mistake). When he got it back a few minutes later & tried to use it all he got was a message that it was corrupted. As it has all of his product codes, phone numbers & personal sales data for the last year he is really desperate to try & recover the data. He does not have a computer of his own, so he has no backup (another bad idea). He has gotten a new Flash Drive a Sony 8 Gig, but I have told him that he better go out & get a 2nd one to use as a back... Read more

Answer:Satellite P500/01R reads data but cannot write data files to CD

Hi

Did you try different burning software?
I?m using the Nero and in my opinion one of the best burning applications.
There I can choose between CD, DVD, DL or Blueray? (only possible if CD/DVD drive supports this too.)

Did you also check different CDs from different manufacturers?
You should do this since not all disks are 100% compatible.
I had many issues with different CD or DVD? in most cases it was an compatibility issue? I tested TDK and these kind of disk is compatible with my CD/DVD drive?
I?m using the ?R standard.

Hi, I recently completely lost access to my usb IDE harddrive which had a lot of multimedia stuff on it (songs, pictures and videos). After using a utility from the Harddrives manufacturer i was finally able to see the drive under windows disk management utility but it appeared as unpartitioned or unintialized.
Since the data was very important I did not create a partion or format the drive instead im now using GetDataBack software to recover the files. But whats happening is that some of the files in the folders that have been recovered to a new drive cannot be viewed e.g the jpg files dont have a preview when viewed as thumbnail or if viewed in a picture viewer software same goes for a lot video and music files (as if they are corrupt)... any suggestion why is this happening ? should i try a different recovery software ? if so which one?
Thankyou.

Answer:Data Recovery using getdataback corrupt files

You should try Recuva from Piriform, or Photorec.
They are freeware.

Also, dont install the softwares on the hard disk from which you wish to take out data from, as the files may get overwritten. Make the drive as a slave to another drive, and install the softwares on the master drive, and then recover the files.

Hello,

I have a HP Pavilion dv5000us. Got it in 2006, it has Windows XP Pro, SP2.

In December 2007 it crashed, I had the blue screen and was able to do the recovery (with the backup CDs I made) and get it working again. My files were gone, but I was still under warranty and called. They had me go into safe mode and thank god all my files were there and somehow they helped me get them all back. I can't remember exactly all the steps, unfortunately.

So, yesterday I started my computer and got a black screen and it was telling me that a startup file was corrupt or missing. I have no idea why. I couldn't get into the computer, so the only option was to do a system recovery.

The computer specifically told me that it would restore all applications to factory installed settings, but would NOT delete and DATA files I had created.

So I did the recovery, the computer works now (The desktop looks like I just took it out of the box), but I can't find any of my data files. No documents, no pictures, nada.

So I go into safe mode. There are 2 accounts, Mine and administrators. I KNOW my files are still there because the icon for my login is still there. It is a picture I had saved on my computer.

But I can't find my files, even in safe mode. I wish I could remember how I got them back last time, I called HP but my warranty is expired and I'm not paying 120 dollars for them to help me.

If anyone here could lend some advice that would be great. I know t... Read more

Hello. How do I 're-activate' 'dead' system files`? Such as thumbs.db and desktop.ini.As I´ve had drives of data recovered from a harddisk that got bust, a lot of the attribute files have been coming with the folders, but they no longer function as they use to.But they are there, they just don't give my folders the icons they should give, and they aren't set as system files. Now, I want some way to use all these files that already exist, with the icon data and so on.How do I restore/re-activate these? It would be a lot easier than to just go through all the folders again and try to find the icons I wantedIt's also about hidden album covers. One thing to try is System File Check(er); To run a file check on the O/S.METHOD 1If you have an XP CD:Click START, RUN, type in: sfc /purgecache(This ensures that system files are copied from your Windows installation media, and files which may be infected/damaged with malware, or are corrupted, are not copied from your drive. Some of the files which are restored/replaced may need MS Updates applied. If sfc replaces any such files, you will have to reinstall updates for those files. (If you have Automatic Updates active, this will happen automatically.))Then type in:sfc /scannowHave your XP CD handy.METHOD 2If you do not have an XP CD:Click START, RUN, type in: sfc /scannowPost back with your results. It's a good day when you learn something-------------------------------------------

Ok, my brother had a few hundred images on Ares but they were shared, Ares just had them in the images folder. He deleted the files on Ares thinking they wouldn't get deleted on this whole computer, he was wrong. Now I'm trying to help him by finding the best data recovery. That's why I came to Neowin to see which program works the best and was reviewed the best by Neowinians.

First is it even possible to recover all of his pictures? I would like people to not throw out every program that they know of. I just want programs that you have had good experiences with.

Please help out my brother in his time of need

I ran an Acronis "Cleanup" utility that supposedly completely removes Acronis products from a computer. Either I had a serious disk problem at the same time, or it also deletes backup files ... including non-Acronis backup files. Is there a good, safe, reputable data recovery tool for recovering deleted files and directories? I know there are programs advertised as doing that, but I don't know if they really work.

Answer:Good data recovery tool for deleted files?

Try the MiniTool Data Recovery tool -- it's free: http://minitool.com/data-recovery-so...very-free.html

I used this just the other day to restore a deleted partition.

Hi,

The other day our computer crashed, not sure why/how, though the tech guy we just paid to fix it said we could not access any of the old files cos they are all gone/corrupt and gave us a CD of what he could get...it was a few files that were basically nothing...though today using a demo of RestorerPro2000 v3 all old files seem to be there an accessible...family photos, uni assignments, all the rest are able to be previewed using the software, though it is a demo and will not restore them.

I am wondering if anyone can recommend some freeware that does as good a job as RestorerPRO as I am a student and just forked out $100 for this to be fixed, though it apparently wasn't, and the guy wants another $150 to go in and restore the files...but if restorer2000 pro can do it for $60, i'll just do that, but if there is a cheaper/free option...PLEASE let me know... my budget begs you!!

Thanks, any help will be greatly appreciated.

are the recovery discs from Lenovo or did you create them yourself from the system?
If you made them yourself, please try the following; boot from the boot cd, when it asks for the supplemental or IBM recovery cd click no - it should then ask for the first recovery disc.

You can use this tool to repair the F11 function, a floppy will be required.

I have been working on this for YEARS, and still have not found a way to fix the file.

FACTS ABOUT THE FILE: I STILL can't repair this file... here are the details....

~ The file is from a camcorder using mini-dvd's, of my wedding. All other dvds work properly, this one doesn't play through the file.

~ The mini dvd is in physically working condition, and I have no problem copying the .vob file.

~ the .vob file is about 1gb

~ If I try playing it in any video player (tried many) it never gets past the first 2-3 seconds, and then freezes.

~ In VLC media player, it recognizes the video is 14:12 long... but still only plays the first 2-3 seconds.

I will do anything to get this fixed!

I uploaded the entire dvd to google drive.
HERE IS THE LINK
https://drive.google.com/folderview?id=0B6fIpo33hhIPTFViV1VVcVVxLTg&usp=sharing

The main file is VTS_01_1.VOB You can see it plays the first few seconds in VLC player, and then freaks out.

Answer:Vob file data/video recovery help!?! (link to files in thread)

Does the disc play properly in a DVD player or in the PC itself?

If not, the disc/files are toast. Depending on file type, basic file information such as length, is stored in the file header. So just because VLC knows the playtime, doesn't mean the file is useable.

Also, in my experience, if it doesn't play in VLC, 99.99999999% of the time, the file is toast.

having said that, I will take a look.

I don't know if this question has ever been asked.

I want to know if anyone knows of a piece of software or a way to clean deleted file entries from directories permanently.

I'm asking because I have downloaded a few freeware and shareware programs and tested them for recovering deleted files. I did get one of them to work and recover the deleted files but the problem is it takes so long to scan the drive and it displays so many results it takes forever to search through them for the files I actually want to recover. So what I want to do is run some software that will clear all deleted file entries from my directory listings permanently (zero them out or something.) This way the next time I have to recover a deleted file the list will be much shorter after scanning the drive.

I have Windows XP Pro installed and have 2 physical drives with a total of 3 partitions. The first drive is formatted with 2 NTFS partitions and the 2nd drive is formatted with 1 FAT32 partition (moved this drive with a lot of data from another PC and don't want to bother reformatting to NTFS.)

Anyways the last time I scanned the E drive (FAT32 - 80GB) it took about ten minutes to scan the drive for recoverable files and listed som 50,000 - 60,000 files that could be possibly be recovered. Even using filters to limit the list I came up with 27,000 JPG files (as I was trying to recover about a dozen JPGs I accidentally deleted.) I was able to find them without an incredible amount of di... Read more

I would like to recover the affected files to their original state, i have searched the internet over and no one seems to have the solution documented

currently i am trying to download QuickView Plus (Version 8), i have tried all aplications i can come across, including recover my files, winhex, get data back for ntfs, and r-studio.

i am honestly intrested in documenting the solution to this problem, and am intrested in suggestins on the best way to approach this

looking forward to your favourable reply.

Answer:DATA Error [47 0F 94 93 F4 K5] Data Recovery

You will most likely need to restore those files from a backup. But don't do anything until you've made sure the virus is gone. Don't want to reinfect the files.

Hi,

I have a larged data drive that failed a disk check. It stalls when starting stage two (I belive that is the verification of indexing). I have been able to back-up all of the folders except for a large folder of raw video. The PC locks up when I attempt to access/copy this folder (it appears to be part of the problem). I want to make an attempt to recover this data before reformatting the drive.

The check disk fails both at start up or if I run from the desktop both in regular and safe mode. Does anyone have tips for recoverying this data?

Answer:Data Recovery of data drive

You could try using a 98 boot disk and then run ntfsdos from there to access the ntfs partitions. Then try an xcopy of that file to another drive.

Another method could be to use Winrar to create a multipart archive and store it on another drive. This might chunk it up enuff.

Or boot to recovery console from the CD and then run chkdsk /r which marks any sectors that are corrupt as bad so they will not be used again, even after format. All take some time, but they are readily availalble fixes.

Alternatively, you could create an image of the drive and save that somewhere else, then run your drive manufacturers disk utility to check integrity of the disk.

Hope this helps

The Data Recovery Wizard program worked for me when I lost some important files. It had a prices tag but from my experience it was worth it. You can see the details info via http://www.easeus.com. I wanted to share but also wanted to make sure that I didn't stray from the forum rules.

I have a system that has nearly filled my 40GB hard disc. I have managed to corrupt the operating bsystem so that the system would not work. As I was going to expand the system by buying a 2nd hard disk I have re-installed the OS (Windows XP) on the new disk, but have a pile of data on the other (old) disk.We all had our own log on, and some of the children had declared a password to login. I can see the data in the directories for the people who have not declared a password, but can not see the directories of those that have declared a password. How can I gain access to these?

Answer:How Do I Rescue Data

Just thinking aloud really. Cut and paste the data which you can see to the new drive. (How big is your new drive, btw.)This will give you space on the old drive.Replace the old drive as Master. Then run the recovery console from the XP CD and run chkdsk at the prompt. Then see if it will boot to the desktop, and if it will, run sfc /scannow.OR http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm

Question: Rescue Data Help!

I'm so amazingly pissed off right now, it's beyond thought. So after beating down on my pillow for a good 15 minutes, I come to you folks for some assistance.

This problem all started with a freakin' video card. The smart *****s at nVidia told me I needed to reformat my HDD because of this new video card, even after knowing the card that was ship to be via RMA (or whatever it's called) was possibly damaged (I received the card amidst the remains of the one of the tropical storms in NY). The package was completely wet and the box look like someone bit the first half off.

So against my better judgement, I decided to listen like an utter *****. I saved all my data onto a DVD+RW and before I reformatted, I tested out the disc to make sure they work. Well ... now that I'm fully reformatted and see that the problem has not been corrected (big surprise) I can't seem to access most of my files. The disc(s) itself is in perfect condition -- not a scratch. I just can't seem to, well, copy most of the files and paste them to where they belong.

Is there a program or something that can salvage my files? I've spent years collecting and achieving these files and I would be totally heart broken if this can't be help.

Answer:Rescue Data Help!

Have you reinstalled Windows on your hard drive?
Reformatting your hard drive to fix a video card problem was a very bad idea. Whoever told you to do this has misinformed you. What do you mean by can't access most of the files? Did you manage to copy any of them back to the hard drive?

HI ,
yesterday I've noticed that my XP Sp2 PC
got infected by the ramnit virus ,

i did a scan with
malwarwbytes i have over 1800 infected files
eseet smart online 14200:confused .

while mwb was trying to remove the virus i think it deleted important exe files
i know that my PC is beyond salvaging now cause i keep on getting error messages from various programs; acrobat, office ,...and the virus is still there
i am afraid that the system would crash on me now

my question is how to get my data on a removable disk without infecting the removable and will my data still be infected?
please help ? thanks in advance.

Answer:how to rescue my data?

Ramnit infections have really become quit nasty and dangerous. We could attempt to remove it, and we have had some success in the past, but recently it has become even more trouble to remove. It is really safer to just bite the bullet and do a clean reinstall.

The problem is that the damage caused by this infection really makes a PC unreliable/untrustworthy. PE file infectors like Ramnit, Virut,.... etc can infect all executable files (DLL, EXE, SCR....and many more and also HTML). These infections can open back doors that truly may compromise your computer and your security. These backdoors could allow a remote attacker to access and instruct the infected computer to download and execute more malicious files.

In many cases the infected files (which could number in the thousands) cannot be disinfected properly by your anti-virus or by other scanning tools. Also when disinfection is attempted, the files often become corrupted and the system may become unstable or irrepairable. The longer Ramnit remains on a computer, the more files it may infect and/or corrupt so the degree of infection can vary.

Ramnit is commonly spread via a flash drive (usb, pen, thumb, jump) infection where it copies the Ramnit worm using a random file name. The infection is often contracted by visiting remote, crack and keygen sites. These type of sites are a major source of system infection.

So all the above being said, and please do take serious note of the warnings, I suggest the you just ... Read more

Hi,My T61p has suddenly stopped booting up properly, the ThinkVantage button doesn't work (I cannot access Rescue and Recovery) and I am traveling and do not have my backup CD with me. Is there a way I can get access to the hidden partition with Vista on it and rebuild from there? I found this website that seems to describe what I want to do:http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?lndocid=MIGR-4UFUYKHowever, my Thinkpad neither came with a floppy disk drive (which computer nowadays does?) and I also don't have a folder c:/IBMTOOLS that is mentioned in there. My details are:- I am running Vista Ultimate (english version)- T61p- I only have access to a French version of Vista Business to start a recovery console (with which I backed up my files)The symptoms are:- Cannot access Rescue and Recovery (when I press the button I only get a screen asking me to access the BIOS, boot normally or boot from a different device)- Several system drivers seem to be missing (e.g. intelide.sys or acpi.sys)- My MBR may have been destroyed previously (a Vista tool recreated it)- Both my HD and main memory passed diagnostic tests, so the problem isn't thereMy questions are:- Is there a way I can access the hidden partition and initiate a reinstall from there from the command-line (my French recovery console)- Is there a way I can recover access to Rescue and Recovery without requiring a floppy disk?Any help is appreciated,Petra

My harddrive failed on my T440p.  The techs just replaced the hd with a new one and ran the recovery cds.  I then proceded to enter the Rescue and Recovery partition to do a full system restore from my external hd and I get the following error:  "one or more partitions could not be restored because the partition does not exist" I tried calling tech support and the refuse to help as my warranty supposedly does not cover using any of their software, just hardware.  Please can someone help. Specs:T440p 500GB mechanical drive with a 16GB ssd from the factory.

Hello Folks,  I have a question regarding R&R. I have a thinkpad T520 running windows 7. It came with a 500GB hdd and I allocated 50GB of that to a Linux system. I bought a 1 TB HDD and would like to replace the one inside, and this brings me to my question;*Does the R&R tool take a complete image of  my hdd, meaning if I was to recover my backup to a new hdd, would I be able to access my Linux installation and all the files in that partition as well, or is it specific to the windows system only. *If the above is indeed not possible, is there a way to change my settings on R&R to do it or do I have to resort to another paid 3rd party software to do that for me.  Please help as I can't afford to lose anything on the Linux system as I need it for research.  Thanks in advance, Solomon

Answer:Rescue and Recovery Capability to recover other operating systems

Hello and welcome,

I can't answer directly so apologies for crashing your thread.  I'd be very surprised if R&R recognized anything but windows-flavored partitions.  I don't have one of my old multi-boot ThinkPads at hand to test or I would.

IIRC backup is one of the reasons I finally gave up on multi-boot and went to a pure Windows setup running Linux and Solaris as virtual machines.  It makes for a very simple backup process.

Having said that, I actually use Acronis for backup. It can handle multi-OS backups but in my experience I always had to repair the Linux partition after a restore.

Is the virtual machine approach something that would work for you?  If not you might use one of the Linux backup approaches to save that partition separately.

Regards,
Z.

I made a backup of some very important files by useing drag and drop. I formated the disk and draged the files onto the disk in explorer. I tested it when I did it and the files where on there. Now when i insert the disk, it shows that the space on the disk is taken up but when i open the disk in explorer it shows no files? I can use cd roller and isobuster and the files are readable, but i cannot afford 40 bucks for this one time use. Evening folks. I've got a problem with my niece's laptop which I think is probably too far gone to resolve, but I'd appreciate any advice from you experts as to whether it really is the end of the line for the data. She contacted me a few days for advice as to whether her machine was totally broken as it she couldn't do anything with it, the screen was black and reporting disk failure etc. I asked whether she had experienced any other problems before this and she said it had shut down a few times due to overheating. At this point I assumed the black screen was a boot screen so something actually wrong with the HDD or config etc.I arranged to get hold of the laptop, and pretty quickly found that the disk failure etc messages were the result of the File Recovery virus and set about cleaning it up.Managed to boot in safe mode, but this didn't get past the little tinker as I couldn't browse to any security related sites. Just about managed to copy RKILL from usb drive, but couldn't copy or use any other tools from USB as it seemed to spot what I was up to so I had to resort to booting up from Kaspersky Rescue Disk on DVD.This ran okay, but very slow so I left it running overnight (after going back for a final check at midnight when it said it had about an hour left to run), and of course by the morning it had done a thermal shutdown. At 6:45am I wasn't at my brightest so I just booted it back up again. Hi,

My friend had accidentally deleted all her achieve folders in Microsoft Outlook, I tried to import the achieve PST files but can't find any in her document&setting and actually her achieves file become "Office Data Files" instead of .PST and "Outlook Data Files". But if I copy the achieve into my own XP and Vista, all the achieve file will become.PST. Can anyone assist me to troubleshoot so that I'm able to retrieve the datas for my friend. Thanks.
And also I realised that her file name in her window doesn't appear file format. Eg test.xls, xls doesn't appear. Please help.
Thanks a lots.

Answer:Office data files & outlook data files

Hi DesignCreatrix

Was Outlook removed from the machine, as well?
.pst files are still .pst files, they just need Outlook to read them.

Hide extensions for known file types, may need to be disabled.
For Windows XP:
Control Panel > Tools > Folder Options > View tab
Uncheck: Hide extensions for known file types
Apply, OK to save and close.

To connect the Archive.pst file (or any .pst file) to Outlook:
File > Open > Outlook Data File
Browse to the location of the .pst file and select it, the Personal Folders (.pst file) should then appear in Outlook.

Let us know if that helps or not.
