Cannot open Theme Settings, Display Settings, Screen Saver Settings, etc

Question: Cannot open Theme Settings, Display Settings, Screen Saver Settings, etc

Hi everyone. new to the forum. Trying to find a solution to my problem.
I have vista ultimate on a DELL XPS laptop.
I have 2 user accounts, both admin.
The second account i setup today by default had the windows classic
theme, so i clicked personalize the change it. but to my surprise, when
i clicked on the "Theme" link in the personalize menu, nothing happened
- no popup or error message, literally nothing.
i then tried clicking on display settings, same thing. Same thing for
Window Color and Appearance and Screensaver. The only links which work
from my personalize menu are "Desktop Background, Sounds and Mouse
Pointers". Same problem happens in the first user account too i checked.
Im running latest version of norton antivirus, and have run a scan with
nothing detected.
Any help or fixes would be greatly appreciated. google wasnt my friend
trying to find a solution for this.

Preferred Solution: Cannot open Theme Settings, Display Settings, Screen Saver Settings, etc

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

All of my "Idle" settings take effect despite not being idle. I have set my power managment settings to turn off my screen after being idle for 20 minutes. Rather than turning the screen off after being idle for 20 minutes, the screen turns off every 20 minutes regardless of whether or not I've been idle. The screen immediately comes back on as it typically turns off in the middle of my typing an email or a forum post. I have tried this on various time settings, as low as a minute and as high as 20 minutes. It seems that my system activity is not recognized (i.e. my typing and mouse usage) unless the system is specifically looking for activity, such as when the power management system has taken affect and the screen saver has come on, or the display shuts down, etc. This isn't a huge deal except that, when my settings included going to my lock screen I had to put my credentials in every time that the system shut off the display. I've read the solutions that suggest setting all of my power managmeent options to "never". This is simply not an acceptable solution. If I am using my computer in a public place and I get up to get a cup of coffee, I want my computer to lock itself after 5 minutes of inactivity. Additionally, if I'm in the middle of taking notes at a lecture, I want my display to shut down and conserve power after I have been idle for a time. Simply telling the machine to never use its security and power saving functions does not fix the problem, it si... Read more

This stoopid user had her computer crawling with viruses, opened the fotos.zip.exe file common in MSN messenger and an angelina jolie video.exe

ANyway... removd the viruses and all that but it also installed a desktop background about the computer being infected and that it needs an antivirus and anti spyware to be installed.

ALso the screensaver is set to some kind of blue screen of death, logon screen windows startup screens that fooled me for a bit thinking the computer had crashed.

I want to change the SS and desktop background but those options are disabled in the display settings.

Any way to re-activate them so I can change SS and background?

Thanks..

Hi guys, I've had this problem for around 4-5 monthes but have never really gotten around to looking for a solution. Anyways, here is part 1 of my dilema. Lenovo Settings will not open. In fact, it seems to have disappeared completely, along with several "default" apps, such as Paint and Calculator. However, I am able to see them, yet cannot open them directly. View From the Home Button. Oddly enough, I can still open paint, though I have to do so via right clicking on a picture. Clearly they exist, but whenever I click on them and attempt to open them directly, nothing happens. Another issue I have is that the lock screen is stuck on one picture. I cannot change this picture, instead, when I try to change it, the loading wheel spins indefinately like so. If there is any solution to either of these issues please contact me as soon as you can. As you can imagine it's a little bit annoying having battery saver mode stuck on so I can't charge more than 60% for road trips. EDIT: I should also note that this is a Y50-70 I am using

Up until a few days ago, everything was fine; my screensaver would display when required and stayed on until I moved the mouse. Now, it won't start up automatically when required unless I go through the routine of setting it up to start. It will start at the required time; and then after awhile, it reverts back to my desktop and will not go into screensaver mode again until I set it up again. I've done virus scans, etc, and it does not appear that I've been hi-jacked. Any solutions or known causes?

Thanks,

Hi All,
Running XP Home on a Sony Viao laptop, when ever I reboot the machine the screen saver I was using before the reboot changes to either the XP saver or switches to none, it even sometimes does both, first it uses xp and after that none. Any ideas? It's not a real big deal, just strange and a pain in the butt.

Thanks in advance for any help you can give me.

I solved the problem, the problem is that the settings in the registry aren't being saved prior to a reboot. I followed the advice of an other problem where the screen saver didn't work at all and ran a script from Kelly's Korner and the problem hasn't returned.

On all my other PCs running Windows 7 Ult x64 it runs fine.
Could this be a Windows Permissions issue?
I have never had a Pro version of Windows before (always Ultimate), is this a common problem?

Update: A facebook contact figured it out, so I'll post it here for others.

Step 1: Place screen saver .scr file on Desktop
Step 2: Take ownership of the .scr (There is the hard way, and the easy way)
I installed: http://cdn3.howtogeek.com/wp-content...eOwnership.zip which added Take Ownership to the context menu.
Step 3: Right-click .scr and install.

Hi, so I just got my new Yoga 910, and wanted to change the settings so the F keys are default and me not needing to press Fn. I found a lot of posts on the forum, where people got it working by having the latest BIOS and Lenovo Settings app from the store. I have the exact same installed, latest bios and settings app. But my input setting screen is just empty, it shows three loading spinners when loading the inputs setting page, but then just goes empty. See attached screenshot.    Anyone else experiencing this? I have updated Windows and all the drivers, also tried uninstalling the settings app and reinstalling, but that did not help either. Hope someone can help.. -- Christian

How do I tailor the screendaver?

The instructions I've found say things like: "type screen saver in the taskbar search and click on the Change screen saver result which appears." but on my Windows 10 there seems to be no "Change Screen Saver".

Not sure about your system but on mine, just got 1709 (Fall Creators Update) today, Screensaver settings are located under the Lock Screen settings tab. I believe prior to 1709, they were part of the themes subsystem.

Have win10 home installed since its release and it has run fine except for a screen saver issue I am having.

Heres what happens.I do a fresh boot in the morning and the SS never will come on until I goto personalize and glick on a new screen saver and select one then I can can go back and select my original.I only need to do this so I can hit the "apply" button.I also have to reset the amount of time before the SS will come on.
I normally haveit set to 3 minutes but every reboot it sets itself to 1 minute.

I have to do this after every reboot and cant figure out why.
Everything else is working great with no other issues.
Any ideas or thoughts on this issue?

Answer:Screen Saver settings acting weird

I have Win 10 Pro x64. No matter what I do, after a couple minutes, the console locks up and requires a cntl-alt-del to unlock it with my user ID/Password. I have checked local policies, screen saver (set to NONE) timeout setting, power options settings. I have tried the Win 8 workaround to reset power plan to the defaults. I don't have time to stand, stretch, and scratch my behind before the console locks up.

An exception is if I have one (of four) screens full screen running Hauppauge WinTV v8, or a browser watching streamed video at full screen.

I am having a problem with the settings in the Screen Saver, and Power Settings not "Taking" in Win XP Home. I work on computers all the time and NEVER came across this situation before. The computer in question is an 'E' Machine, w/1024 meg. memory, Windows XP Home edition, w/SP-2 installed, and all the latest Critical Updates from Microsoft. When I try to set up a Screen Saver, I can select any image I want, but when I click on "Preview", the whoe DeskTop will just blink. I can select any time I want for activation, when the allotted time rolls around, nothing happens. The same with the "Power" settings, Ie. setting the monitor to shut down after 5 minutes does nothing. The monitor stays on.One thing I did notice is the usual selections for Power Options, Ie., Home/Office Desk, Portable/LapTop, were missing. Presentation, Always On, Minimal Power Management, and Max Battery were the only selection available. The computer is not on the 'net as yet, so I don't think some worm or Trojan has infected it, I t also has Norton AntiVirus installed, and yes, I did do a complete scan of the system.ANY Ideas???

Answer:Screen Saver and Power settings don't work

Make sure nothing is moving the mouse, and no keys are stuck. If something is stuck or moving, the computer will not go into screensaver.Flame

Hello,
Is it possibly the Anniversary Update, which has blocked my possibilities to change the Lock Screen configuration? In Settings->Personalisation that whole option is greyed out today and I'm stuck with a lock screen, which I can't modify or change. Any help for this? Perhaps there is a registry change I could apply? I would be happy for any suggestion.

Just curious if anyone knows of a quick way to change the power settings and/or screen saver without having to right click on desktop and choose properties. It's not that it's that hard to do it this way, but I was curious if there was some utility or batch file that could be created to quickly switch between settings.

intermittent failure of screen saver and power off to activate?

Hi.
My Win 7 Desktop computer, unlike my laptop and other Win 7 computers, has a power and screen saver setup that, at times, never activates? I have checked background processes and can't understand why at times it kicks in and other times I must reboot to get it to kick in. It always works after a reboot as long as I do not use the computer. Sometimes when I use it, the screen saver and power setup will go on, sometimes not?

My screen saver is not a 3rd party one and the same for the power settings. They are the ones that part of the Win 7 pro Os.

Has anyone ever heard of this? What do you suggest? Any help is greatly appreciated!
Thank you very much for any possible solutions.
sincerely,

Miles

P.S. I have done a SFC /scannow and no problems were found. I also checked my Lan Driver Properties to make sure the box was unchecked for waking up the computer.

P.S.S. My Computer is a Win 7 Pro with an i5 3rd generation Intel 3.20 GHZ CPU with 16 GB of DDR3 Ram and a 1TB SSD HD.

So my company laptop keeps resetting my screen saver settings in the registry to:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\Control Panel\Desktop:

ScreenSaveIsSecure: 1 (requires a password to exit ssaver)
ScreenSaveTimeout: 1800

I keep changing these to 0,120, respectively, but whenever I restart something is setting them back to their original value. Is there a way to stop whatever that program is?

Answer:Editing company-locked screen saver settings in registry - help!

Hi there,

More likely then not your company has a GPO placed on the OU level in Active Directory. OU policies will always trump local ones and this is the reason the settings are being reverted back.

LSDOU

Local, Site, Domain, Organizational Unit... Local Policies (and settings) are on the bottom of the food chain. If theres is a more secure or specific policy set on a level above local, the local one will always be overwritten.

Hope this makes sense.. 9hrs into my shift and the coffee maker died

Some kind of Malware disguised as a Flash plugin update has made it so I cannot change my desktop Background or change my screen saver. I managed to stop the Malware before it could do any more damage other than that, but this alone is really annoying.
It changed the background to an alert message picture saying there are viruses that have been found on this computer (I figured out how to change the background back, but I still can't access it from the control panel in "Appearance and Personalization.")
It also changed my Screen saving into a short loop of a blue screen saying a problem has been detected on this computer and needs to restart... Then it shows the Windows vista start up screen and loops back again.

Anytime I try to edit either the desktop background or the screen saver from the control panel I get this alert:

I am the system Administrator so I'm at a loss for what to do... I'm guessing I'm supposed to go into safe mode and do something, but I wouldn't know what.

I'd like to also note that I have Windows Vista and I did a Full Virus scan and found nothing.

No there is no way to change the mandated items that Microsoft deems not user accessible anymore, even with third party utilities. Also you have to keep the Display properties active, because if they are disabled and something happens, you can never get in to fix the problem.

I have a laptop and I like to plug in a full-size keyboard and use a flat screen monitor at my desk at home and work. That all works fine, except for the display settings.
I select the flat screen (monitor 2) as the only one in use (and close the laptop lid), but the image on the flat screen is exactly the size of the screen on my laptop, wasting a lot of space and defeating the purpose of using a larger monitor.
So, I go to display settings and make the changes needed to use the full flat screen.
However, doing so completely messes up the settings on the laptop, and I am getting really tired of having to completely reconfigure every time I go from the flat screen (home and office) to the laptop (traveling).
Can Windows 10 save the settings for each display device and allow me to toggle between them? Even better, since it recognizes the device when it's plugged in, can it toggle automatically?

Answer:Display Settings on Alternate Screen

It works fine on my brothers HP laptop. When you connect the HDMI, click on action center and then click on "project" Then make sure you select "second screen only". If it's just cloning your main display it will use the resolution from the main display.
Your Hdmi cable/tv may also not support transmitting the necessary info for the video card to change the resolution. But in any event you can go to display settings/advanced display settings to set it there. There's no real saving unless you install a driver for your tv. Everything is typically done via hdmi communication.

I'm new here. First post. I hope I'm in the right place.

When I right click on the desktop and select properties, there are no tabs available, only a drop down box that allows me to change themes.

Details: It happened after a crash one night where I told it to shut down and found it still hung the next morning. I forced a reboot and it wouldn't start due to a missing vgaoem.fon file (I think that was the name). I used the xp disk and extracted the file but it only ran it like 640x480. the X1400 video card showed a problem so I removed and reinstalled and the device manager said it was working properly. But I couldn't get to the resolution settings so I was still screwed. I ended up using a restore point from 2 days earlier and the resolution went back to the old setting. Whew and I can see a normal screen again. However, Still no display setting tabs, I can only change themes.

Workaround: I have recently discovered that If I change to a different theme and select "apply" it will not only change the theme but also make the other tabs appear and work. However, after making a change and then selecting "ok" to close the window, when I go back it only shows theme drop down box again.....

Equipment: Dell E1505 with a T2500 chip at 2.0, Radeon Mobility X1400, Hi res screen, 80 Gb hard drive, 2048 ram, dvd burner.

Answer:Screen display settings tab missing?

Hi,

Try this first:

Go to Start => Run and type in (or copy/paste):

regsvr32 /i shell32.dll
There is a space before and after the /i parameter.

Repeat the process with this:

regsvr32 desk.cpl
There is a space after regsvr32

Hello all, I had previously posted a similar thread asking for help, but I guess it wasn't phrased properly because nobody replied. My question is: Where are settings that changes On Screen Display color located? Thanks for your help!Eric

Answer:On Screen Display: Color Settings

If you are talking about changin the color of the onscreen display for Volume control etc.  Start>Control Panel>ThinkPad Configuration  Select Display > OnScreen Display.  You can change colors there

I keep my screen resolution @ 800x600. When I shut down and restart, my screen fills to only 3/4 of screen. I need to change resolution to a smaller size and then go back to 800x600 to get back to where I want to be.

What can I do to correct this?

Answer:Display Settings-Screen Resolution

When you have it at 800x600, press the buttons on the front of your monitor to set it right.
Menu, Mode, Vertical, Horizontal something like that.

The settings for my monitor, under properties/Display Properties/Settings/Screen Resolution was changed so badly that the monitor now flashes an error notice and I cannot access anything except to hard boot the computer off and try to re-enter the BIOS/Delete at startup...

How can I reset the screen resolution/settings on display properties when I am not able to access the main screen to bring up the display properties?

Thanks for any help anyone can give!

Answer:Display Properties/Settings/Screen Resolution

To change your display back to its original configuration, you need to reboot in Safe Mode. To boot in Safe Mode and reset the display, follow the steps below:

While your computer is booting, follow the appropriate instructions for your version of Windows:

In Windows 2000 and XP, when the Power On Self Test is complete (after the first time you hear the computer beep), press and hold the F8 key.
In Windows 98 and Me, when the Power On Self Test is complete (after the first time you hear the computer beep), press and hold the Ctrl key.
In Windows 95, press and hold the F8 key after "Starting Windows 95" appears on a black background.

Select the option to boot in Safe Mode.

Once in Safe Mode, go to the display settings by right-clicking the desktop and then clicking the Settings tab. Then you can change the display settings back to the original configuration.

To restore the correct settings, shut down and restart the computer by clicking Start and selecting Shut Down, then Restart, then OK.

Hello
I'm currently troubleshooting a new issue with a friends laptop running Windows 10 64-bit (Asus N501JW i7 , 16GB RAM, BIOS is up to date). The laptop was turned off for a period of 10 days during Xmas vacation (12/18/17). Upon restart and a recent Windows update (1/7/18) the user noted that the display settings page when accessed caused the laptop to go into an unrecoverable freeze. The mouse will move, but no clicking functions. I have confirmed this behavior and also noted that when accessing the sound functions from the task bar caused the same result. I started the system in Safe Mode and replicated the same steps, no freezes were seen.
I have updated the display drivers (Nvidia G4600) to the latest. No other drivers were out of data. The laptop has had NO new updates or hardware added. This is a very basic user who does their day to day home accounting and internet browsing. The laptop was scanned by two different AV and malware applications and is clean. The AV is Norton 360, is up to date.
If anyone has any tips to troubleshoot this please let me know. I'm really trying to avoid rebuilding this system,
Thanks

Hi, I have a Tecra A2 running windows XP SP2 (and all updates on automatic). Only two months old. When I go to display properties and click on the settings tab the machine crashes with a blue screen. Have tried reinstalling the driver that came on the CD with the machine but makes no difference. Tried downloading a more up to date driver from Intel but it says it can't install it. Any suggestions from anyone, please?
Also (may be relevant but don't know) in device manager I have two default monitors showing and two identical display adapters - is that how it should be?

Answer:Tecra A2 blue screen when selecting display settings tab

Hi

Yes, you?re right. In the device manager under the display adapters the two graphic controllers appear. But this is not a fault.
Furthermore Toshiba recommend using the Toshiba graphic drivers. In this case you should visit the Toshiba driver website and you should install the graphic driver from this site.
http://eu.computers.toshiba-europe.com/cgi-bin/ToshibaCSG/download_drivers_bios.jsp

Check if after this installation the blue screen error message occurs

Hi..

I have an hp laptop model 6730B running windows XP pro.. I have two monitors attached to it through the dockign station
It works perfect.. I can set it to use both monitors or extend to the other monitor.. all perfect
But everytime the computer is switched off and on again.. it loses this setting and the display appears to clone similar on both screens.. so have to go on display settings and reset the display to "extend my desktop"

Any sugguestions???

Cheers
Ash

Answer:Display settings for dual screen on laptop HP 6730B

Ok.. got the fix for that one:
The user was actually opening the laptop to switch it on instead of switching it on from the docking station's power button and then closing it which was defaulting to the setting of using the laptop screen as main monitor.

I was remotely supporting this client which is sometimes not easy.. lol

thanks anyways

I reinstalled windows xp and everything seems to be ok but the screen is half size(box in the middle) and the resolution for video and photos is very bad. I have tried display settings to change the slide resolution but it wont move and cannot change adapter drivers either. Can you suggest anything. Thanks

Answer:dodgy screen and resolution after xp reinstall - tried display settings. HELP

When you reinstalled XP you likely did not reinstall the proper drivers. If you are using a default driver the resolution is terrible and you can not change it with the slide bar in display settings. You will need to install the video card driver for your specific video card. If you have the CD handy you are set. If you do not have the CD or do not know what type of video card you have you have a few options.1. go to Device Manager and look for something with a yellow exclamation point. This is hardware that does not have the proper drivers installed, try to let windows find the driver for the device.2. go to the manufaturers website for the computer if you bought a computer retail ie Dell, HP, Sony, Gateway, ext.. and have not changed the video card. Go to the support link and chose drivers or downloads. You will have to select the model of computer you have and then download and install the drivers. The exact web address is different for each manufacturer so I would google search to find it.3. If you added in a video card and lost the CD you can go to the video card manufacturers website and download the driver from the support link. If you do not know the type of video card you have, open the box and look. Most video cards will have a small sticker or printing on the card with a model number and will clearly show the manufacturer of the card.

Hi allI am having big problems with getting the display settings or screen resolution settings correct. Actually, not sure if I am on the right track or not. All the graphics are really big and clicking on "forums or Topics" etc in this forum don't work. Additionally, that when typing the letters on screen, they are not instant like normal but take quite a while to catch-up, even as I'm typing now it's taking ages and is soooo frustrating.Note: This is in Firefox only - and not in IE7. Also, when clicking on the start menu it gives a message that not all start menu items can be displayed and that I must choose a higher screen resolution. My current Display Settings are:Generic PnP monitor on Mobile Intel ® 965 Express Chipset (Other Option is the Default Monitor )Resolution 1280 x 768I went into troubleshooting but it said that the current display drivers don't allow changes to hardware acceleration settings. Please see my signature below for my O.S etcMany thanks all check out the size of this smiley....

Answer:Display Settings / Screen Resolution Help - Graphics Huge

Weird. It seems that you definitely have the wrong resolution.
Sorry if I am asking you old stuff but. Did you set the resolution through:
Right click desktop/personalize - Display setiings -
With your card, I would say also that you could set it to 72, although that is not a factor with your problem.

ANother area you might want to look in is Control panel/Ease of access(I'm using the Control panel -classic view) Look under "make the computer easier to see" Look particularly under "make things on the screen larger" It should be on 96DPI.

I got a Logitech MX?620 Cordless Laser Mouse, on sale for $30 in a Sam's Club this weekend.Logitech makes nice mice, this one is cordless. A very small dongle plugs into a USB port on my T41, (Win XP, SP2).I downloaded and installed Logitech's SetPoint 4.60 software, Logitech's driver for the mouse. They have two other things to download and install associated with this mouse, Logitech® Connection Utility and Logitech® Desktop Messenger.  I didn't know what the other two software does, so I didn't download either one.The settings for the Mouse, controlled in the SetPoint dialog boxes seem to affect and interfer with the T41 TouchPad's settings. I don't see the exact cause and effect, hence this post. It seems when if I set up a comfortable setting for the mouse, for acceleration and pointer speed, then the touchpad settings are lowered (acceleration and speed are lowered), to the point of being uncomfortably slow.  Then if I modify settings via the ThinkPad UltraNav Wizard (ver 3.05), to speed up the speed or acceleration, the Logitech mouse's speed and acceleration are slowed down.  It seems to be a never ending game, set up one device, and the settings on the other device get changed.  Does anyone know why this is, or have a fix for it?A further note, I've used generic USB mice, the $10 corded kind that plug into a USB port, and have never had this problem.  So the Logitech SetPoint driver/software is the different from using generic mice. ... however i forgot i had some custom theme installed that made my windows & notepads black/grey.

by now i deleted the theme from the folders, but my pc seems to be stuck with it, and when i try to enter the theme settings (rightclick desktop, preferences, themes, ..)
this is where i get stuck and the window closes itself.

if i click the first option, which translates roughly to theme settings, the window just closes itself.
is there any way i can force windows 10 to use the default theme, or is there any other solution?

I was trying to connect my laptop (running Windows 10) to a screen via HDMI. The problem was that i couldn't get it to run regardless of the settings i chose in the display options. I must have chosen the "show only on" option for the screen i thought was the HDMI output screen.

Side-note: It's important to note here that before plugging in any external video ouptut of any kind, Windows 10 was already "registering" 2 screens, one the laptop, and another which just had "Disconnect this screen" in the bottom. When i connected the HDMI a third screen appears, but it also has just the "Disconnect this screen" option in the bottom.

Neither Dubplicate nor extend screen worked. Like i said, I must have tried to select the "show only on" option for the screen i thought was the HDMI output, but my screen just turned off. I tried restarting with HDMI unplugged, but the laptop screen turns off the moment it boots. I'm certain the HDMI problem is on Windows 10's side, since HDMI works fine on Linux mint, which I dual boot, the cables are fine, the screen is fine, and I had used HDMI on windows a few days prior with no changes to the settings and no updates in the mean time.

The problem now is that i can't access windows 10 at all, because the laptop screen stays off. How can I bypass this( keep in mind i have dual boot linux, so i can access windows files from there) and how can i fix the HDMI problem, once I get back in?

Start your computer.
When you see the "Please select the operating system to start" message, press the F8 key.
When the Windows Advanced Options menu appears, use the ARROW keys to select Last Known Good Configuration (your most recent settings that worked), and then press ENTER.
If you are running other operating systems on your computer, use the ARROW keys to select Microsoft Windows XP, and then press ENTER.

I just purchased and installed Spyware Doctor. After running it the first time there were 3 issues it could not clean. Two of the three were Rootkit.agent and Trojan.vundo. Upon reboot (and every boot since), windows starts up, asks for my logon, applies my personal settings and them immediately goes to saving my settings. The system them returns to the log-on screen. The same events happen in safe mode. I can boot and get into Windows using a WINTERMINAL disk in my CD drive, but i really don't know what do to from this point. When I try to double-click or run Spyware Doctor, it says there are files missing. Please help!

Answer:Windows logs me on, applies settings, then auto saves settings

Welcome to Major Geeks!

First I recommend that you not attempt to run Spyware Doctor anymore since it seems to have been what cause you this problem with logging in. This is about the 3rd time in the last couple days someone has mentioned this issue and each time it was after running Spyware Doctor. To that end, I would ask do you have a log from Spyware Doctor. It may default to saving a log somewhere. I believe they used to save files in as XML (which is not a good idea in my opinion).
Please try to follow the instructions in the below link and attach the requested logs when you finish these instructions.

Hi,
Yeah, you may think this seems like just a normal message from oc'ing too much, but a problem-I haven't overclocked anything! It booted to that point, then my hard drive went mad clicking and crashed. This was after it being turned on and off to see if my graphics card was booting because I had no video, but it turned out I had just been downright stupid and plugged it into the onboard graphics. Anyone know what could have happened? Thanks

P.S. would the power drawing thing (molex on my case fan) need to have a seperate connector or just draw power from another device? Thanks.

Answer:'Previous overclock settings failed, default settings enabled'

If this happens just once then I wouldn't worry about it too much but the PSU or HDD could have something to do with it.

You can connect a molex connector fan to its own power connector or you can put it on an optical drive's connector for example, but it's ok to do either as they don't use much power.

Dear all,
I am in a trouble with Advanced Power Setting on Windows 10.
There are limited options only when I go to Control Panel\Hardware and Sound\Power Options\Edit Plan Settings\Change advanced power settings in particular Intel (R) Dynamic Dynamic Platform and Thermal Framework Settings.
For some of the missing options I followed this page and fixed: www.eightforums.com/.../50890-options-missing-power-options-advanced-settings.html
However I could not add Intel (R) Dynamic Dynamic Platform and Thermal Framework Settings in advanced power settings even though followed these links:

P.S: All drives are updated.

Answer:Missing Advanced Power Settings: TDP Settings (XPS13 9360)

I don't see them on my XPS 13 9360 either.  I just figured that this CPU/chipset might not support those settings anymore.

Hi,

Looking for advice on how to find where the touch pad settings may be hidden on this laptop I'm working on? I've looked in the control panel and there is no icon for touch pad and I've looked in the mouse settings without finding any options to change the settings for the touch pad? The laptop is an acer Aspire 5520-5912 running Vista Home Premium Service pack 2. Any ideas?

Answer:Can't find touch pad settings in Control Panel/Mouse settings anywhere?

Hi loki2007 Usually, Windows install it's own Microsoft Legacy Drivers for a touchpad on a laptop, and these drivers doesn't enable the "Advanced" settings that allows you to control the touchpad. In order to do that, you have to install the laptop touchpad drivers which will add that tab in the Mouse options.Download and install these drivers:http://global-download.acer.com/GDFiles/Driver/TouchPad/Touchpad_Synaptics_9.1.16_Vistax86.zip?acerid=633639058794305220&Step1=NOTEBOOK&Step2=ASPIRE&Step3=ASPIRE%205520&OS=ALL&LC=en&BC=ACER&SC=PA_4Let me know if they install or not.

There is a software which often changes the proxy settings so I decided to config the internet settings registry right to reject the proxy settings. But When I decided to delete this software and return the rights back, I suddenly found that I can not change
the proxy settings manually!
The detail is that I change the auto proxy url, to let my pc use a pac file and I don't want any softwares to change. However, when I decided to give the rights back and try to change the url back, it never success, and even the same when i'm sure I have
cleared this url in the whole registry, but it back, as it never changes!
I check the registry rights twice or more to make sure that the rights has given back, just like it originally should be. But it never works.
So the result is I have to clear and reinstall the WINDOWS 10 AGAIN!
Never should you save such information both in registry and somewhere I don't know! Or you should let these stuffs out of the ** registry!

Hi everyone,

One of our users' PC's has had it's theme settings changed, as in the font at the top of an Explorer window, the desktop icon font & the Internet Explorer font has all changed.

Basically I'm wanting to restore XP back to it's default theme settings but nothing I have tried has worked;

- I've tried saving a theme from another computer & applying it to this one
- Changing the settings in Display Properties > Appearance
- Changing the settings in Display Properties > Appearance > Effects to the same as another PC
- Delete the user profile & getting the user to log back to create a new profile

Does anyone have any idea how I can do this?

Regards,

Luke

Answer:Restore XP Theme to Default Settings

Mysterious changes like that can be caused by malware so please post on the malware forum to get a clean bill of health for the affected PC before looking for other causes:

Hello,

I've a Tecra M11 (Windows7 64-bit). The Toshiba Power Saver Settings V8.9.3.64 are installed.

My problem is: The fan is almost always on with maximum speed, whereby there is no processor load (only 1-5%). That is really loud and annoying!

What I've done so far: I switched the cooling method to "battery optimized" for both power modi, but without any effect.

Question:
1) Is there any quite office mode available (as many other notebook manufacturers offer for there business notebooks) to work in a silent environment?
2) Is there any option to deinstall the Toshiba Power Saver Settings and use the standard Windows7 cooling methods, because Windows 7 in general offers a passive cooling option with the effect that the fan is off.

Thanks a lot!
Frank

Answer:Tecra M11 power saver settings - fan almost always on

I?m really wondering this ?cooling method? settings didn?t help. I have Tecra A11 with Win7 64 bit and my notebook is absolutely silent. Changing these settings on several other Toshiba notebooks the result was the same. Notebook was much quieter.

Which power plan do you use?
Have you noticed some difference when you switch to ?Toshiba eco mode??

Answers:
# As far as I know such mode is not available on Toshiba notebooks.
# You can remove Toshiba power saver but it is a little bit complicated. You must remove whole Toshiba value added package. Later you must install VAP again but not in standard but custom mode and remove check mark in front of applications you don?t want to install.

I can apply 'Site Zone Assignement' successfully to user:
User Settings -> Administrative Templates -> Windows Components -> Internet Explorer -> Internet Control Panel -> Security Page.
I can use this to add sites to trusted sites.
When I apply the 'Security Compliance Manager' 4.0 Internet Explorer GPO template to the workstation, the user site zone assignment settings "stop taking". I say stop taking, because according to group policy modeling, and gpresult,
the user GPO is present and applied.

Of note:
If I change the 'Site Zone Assignement' to a computer setting, it takes. {My manager doesn't want to do this}
If I enable loopback processing it does not take.

I've seen this issue on windows 7 and 10 Enterprise x64 clients.
I feel like there is something set in the SCM internet Explorer GPO set that's preventing user settings (whether from GPO or user) from applying, but I can't put my finger on it. Does anyone else know?

I have been having trouble getting the links to come out the colour I tell them to.

I have discovered the root of my problem, it's to do with the Link colour settings in my Internet Browsers settings ( Tools, Internet Options, Colours, Links).

For some reason the links all show up the colour that the Visited links option is set to in the browser settings.

Why the Visited links colour is over riding the Unvisited links colour is one question, but also is there a way of disabling the browser settings in windows so the Dreamweaver settings are what I see?

Cheers

When I started up it says Win.ini corrupt. Then it starts
up as a new user losing track of Favorites and Start Menu
and Desktop Icons, Display and Folder attributes. Under
Documents and Settings it has added Dave.U5R2D5 in
addition to Dave which still has all the information. I tried
switching the 2 Filenames to get back to what it used to be but
gave an error message and didn't do it and started another new file.
Is there some way to use the old Dave file?

Answer:Lost settings, New user made in Documents and Settings

Hiya asd123321.

It sounds like you`ve re-installed the system from CD over the top of an existing system, giving you a fresh `Dave`. Have you recently run a repair or indeed, done a clean install ?

As a work-around, can you take the documents & favourites from the old `Dave` and put them in the new `Dave` so at least you`re back up and running again.

Hello, i have a Samsung Laptop with Windows 7 loaded and there is some software provided by Samsung, one of these "Easy Settings"

I have noticed that the setting for Express Cache Mode and Battery life Extender (and i'm sure a few others have changed) keep randomly switching to OFF when I have set them to be ON.

Has anyone had any experience of this software or have any idea why it could be doing this? I was thinking it could it be a conflict with some Winodws settings?

Any help would be great, cheers.

Hi, I am having a problem where my trackpoint settings are not being kept. Every couple of days I need to go back to the control panel and readjust the sensitivity of the trackpoint leading me to believe that this happens when the machine either goes to sleep or is shut down. The driver is up to date and I am using the T400 machine. Any help is greatly appreciated. Cheers
