I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi all,

Past items in Taskbar.

There are many leftover items of software that I used to have before in this section. For one reason or another they're still showing up as past items, although I removed that software a long time ago in the Add/Remove Programs. Do these items interfere with the speed of starting up the computer? I like to have my 'puter as clean as possible.

I would like to remove them if possible but can't find a way to do it.

1. Can they be removed?
2. If so, HOW?

Windows XP Home.

Thank you!

Answer:Taskbar and Start Menu Properties (past items in Taskbar)

Hi oma

Yes you can remove these as they are not automatically removed when software is removed, no they dont hamper the startup process, but I personally like to remove them as I like things tidy, just need a simple button to do this proces automatically and one thing I have suggested to MSFT to add.

Open Regedit ( goto Start > Run and type regedit and hit enter )
Locate the registry key location HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\TrayNotify and right click the folder and choose Export ( this will backup that location for you )

then Delete the two values mentioned in bold ( agian right click each of them and choose delete ) IconStreams and PastIconsStream once deleted hit CTRL-ALT-DEL and look for explorer.exe in the Processes Tab and click it and choose End Process ( at this point it is perfectly normal for your taskbar and all desktop icons to disapear )

Then with the Task Manager still open click the top menu option of New Task (Run...) and in the Open box type explorer and hit enter.

Then when you check the Customize Notifications they will all be gone ( apart from some running ones ) best bet is to restore all your actual running tray processes is to re-boot.

Note for Vista users only this is slightly different as below.

Open Regedit ( goto Start > and in Start Search box type regedit and hit enter )
Locate the registry key location HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\Local Settings\Software\Micros... Read more

So basically, I want to get rid of the descriptions that popup after you hover over an item on the taskbar. Its really annoying and for IRC it really sucks because the dam descriptions popup right over where the text area is for IRC so I cant read it. Any ideas?

Answer:Windows 7 - Get rid of descriptions of items on taskbar

My idea is this 'thing' your asking is basically impossible. You could always not 'hover' over said items.

It seems the max is 13 at the moment. I am a web designer and I have loads of files I normally pin to one program ie (abobe CC) but for some odd reason I can only pin 13 files max. Didn't encounter this prob when I was using Windows 7. Any suggestions?

Answer:Why can't I pin more than 13 items to one icon on the Windows 8 Taskbar?

Everything does have a number limit. At least, it should. This number limit could change based on any number of factors, but there will always be a limit. Leaving something open to be "infinite" isn't smart programming-wise.
You could be limited by the power of your processor.
Or by the resolution of your monitor.
Or it could even be a limit of the program.
Whatever it is, I don't personally know how you could increase or decrease this limit.

Perhaps someone has heard of this or knows of some way to do it in windows. I am running dual screens. One has all of my information, chat programs, music player, etc. on it and the other is my workspace. MY problem is that there are so many items on my task bar from my second screen that i can never find what i want on my work one. I know I've seen this before, but i cant find it anywhere. I'm looking for a way to hide the task bar items of either selected open programs (preferred) or a way to hide all that are currently open or not minimized.

I was frustrated with the Pinned Items on the Taskbar in Windows 7 on the left. My objection is that you can't easily see whether they are open or not at a glance--little hard to see whether they are depressed or not, so I often end up opening them in order to see whether to close them!

So in the process I started fiddling with creating a Quick Launch Toolbar and screwed up somehow. It wasn't working out well for me, so I got rid of it. Now when I click on the original pinned items on the Taskbar on the left hand side (left or right click), I get the following message:

"The item you selected is unavailable. It might have been moved, renamed, or removed. Do you want to remove it from the list?"

So now I'm worse off than before.

On the Pinned Programs I have Thunderbird, Firefox, Explorer, Word, Winamp and Excel.

I have no Quick Launch Toolbar when I right click on the Task bar and look at the Toolbars, but in Explorer the folder shows such a directory

%appdata%\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch

And it shows only 3 of the programs I had added to it. I did delete the User Pinned folder that kept showing up on my new Quick Launch Toolbar. I suppose that was stupid.

Any assistance in unraveling and cleaning up my stupid mess to get the plain vanilla pinned items (without even branching out into a Quick Launch Toolbar) would be appreciated.

Does anyone know how to save the pinned items in the task bar? I've got quite a few items pinned and I would be hard pressed to find them all again manually if something would happen to my computer.

I'd like to save the current settings so that I can restore them should I ever have my windows box fail in the future.

Answer:How to backup Windows 7 taskbar pinned items?

Code:
C:\Users\Your User Name\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch\User Pinned .

I'm having a really strange problem lately, whereby I can't drag items to the taskbar to open the corresponding Window (e.g. to drag an item from the Desktop into Windows Explorer).

What's been happening for me the last couple of weeks is that nothing happens at all. The taskbar entry for the application I'm hovering over is darkened/highlighted, but the window itself never maximizes..

Any ideas on what could be causing this?

How do you change the order of any folder (explorer) items on the Windows 10 taskbar?

I am able to change the order of programs, but not any folders I have open. I try dragging them, but they don't move.

Thanks

Answer:How do I change the order of explorer items on the Windows 10 taskbar.

Internet Explorer browser or File Explorer file manager? I don't see individual Folders on my Taskbars, only the programs. If I have 2 or more File Explorer instances open the Folders tend to stack, one Folder icon visible and holding the mouse over it pops up a list of what I have open. Same for many other programs. The blue bar underneath the icons show what is active.

In Vista, while in L4D, I could press the Windows key, then select FireFox in one click. For 7, I have to press alt+tab, as when I click it once, nothing happens. Same think when on desktop and clicking icons in the taskbar area. How do I change these to single click?
Also, a smaller annoyance, how do I make the wireless show up as having green bars? It's completely blank now, yet I'm still connected...just annoys me.

Hi, I have a pc running XP pro, and its being odd!

When i have multiple windows open, they appear as they should on the taskbar, however if i click on the items on the taskbar, it doesn't switch to the window, it just makes the box on the taskbar flash orange, but if i double click on it, as if to minimise the window and then click on it it maximises it back to the foreground.

It's not much of a problem, but very frustrating, any ideas?
Thanks.

Also, I cannot right click the items on the taskbar

So my computer decided to change the directory of my pinned items to a folder in my downloads, and I can't figure out how to change it back or find any information on how to do so. I've tried restarting the computer, scanning for possible virus/malware, dragging the folder to I believe default location of

"C:\Users\USER\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch"

but to no avail. Any ideas on how to fix this problem? If you need any more information just ask and I'll try to provide it.

Hello Suushi, and welcome to Seven Forums.

Pinned items on the taskbar are stored in the hidden folder below instead.

Code:
C:\Users\(User-Name)\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch\User Pinned\TaskBar
What did you do to try and move the I assume "User Pinned" folder?

If you like, you might see if resetting taskbar pinned items back to default. You'll need to "Pin to Taskbar" any programs you want back afterwards though.

Hello. Let me explain my problem.

I had a program installed called Spiral Knights, and I pinned the icon onto the taskbar so I could quickly launch it. When I was done playing it for good, I uninstalled it and it looked like the icon was off the taskbar, but it wasn't. When I tried to put another program onto the taskbar, called minecraft_server.jar, it pinned to the Spiral Knights icon, even though SK isn't installed anymore. Wherever I try to put the minecraft_server.jar onto the taskbar, the SK program is still there, and it says if I want to pin the minecraft_server.jar onto SK. Please help!

I have a new W7 PC that i am trying to make a shortcut to a network share (\\blah\blah). I create the shortcut to my desktop (right click>new>shortcut), and drag and drop it (pin it) to my taskbar. Next thing I see, it appears in the windows explorer icon pinned to my taskbar, grouped with other FOLDER shortcuts I have created in the past. I can right click and get to the new shortcut but I'm curious to know if theres a way to ungroup these folders and view them individually.

Answer:Ungrouping FOLDERS from Windows explorer in Windows 7 Taskbar

try right clicking the taskbar.
Then click properties.
There should be a drop down menu there that says to group all, group when taskbar is full, or to not group at all.

You may have to search for it but it is there. I am not on my Windows 7 machine right now so I can't give you clear instructions. It is there though.

After weeks of experimenting with all kinds of tricks, I've found a way to pin any FILE or any FOLDER to the Taskbar (as well as to the Start Screen) with no registry editing, no software, no scripts, or anything. And it's so simple that anyone could think of it -- in fact, others probably have.
Just create a shortcut that leads to the file or folder, NOT directly, but indirectly by way of File Explorer -- which is a program and can be pinned anywhere.
Taskbar - Pin or Unpin a Folder - Windows 7 Forums
Then give the shortcut a name, which may be the same as the file's name.

The shortcut will have a File Explorer icon, but you can right-click it, select "Properties" and change the icon (recommended -- if you put several of them on your taskbar, you won't want them all to look the same.)

Then right-click it again and select "Pin to Start" or "Pin to Taskbar." Afterwards you can delete it from the Desktop.

This works with .txt (Notepad) files too. And with folders. If you have Adobe Reader, it works with .pdf files.
It also works with shortcuts to CLSID's (see Brink's tutorial on "Shell Commands"), such as
%WinDir%\explorer.exe shell:::{3080f90e-d7ad-11d9-bd98-0000947b0257}
which creates the "Switcher" (the sticky all-active-apps view that you can navigate with the arrow and Enter keys).

Hi
I'm helping a friend who had a malware infection, which has now apparently been eradicated. Vista Home Premium SP2 32bit. I don't know if the problems it still has are a result of the malware, or if they were preexisting on my friend's computer. But I suspect they were used by the malware to protect itself.

*The taskbar won't unlock, even temporarily (in contrast to the folder properties issue mentioned below).
*I can't show hidden files/extensions, even temporarily.
*Folder properties can't be altered permanently, e.g. the user documents folder is always displayed as "Pictures and Videos" type instead of "All Items" ; can't set to use Windows Classic folders, show full path in Title Bar, etc. These items CAN be altered temporarily, but the previous settings always revert on rebooting.)
*Context menu items such as new folder, new text document are not present.
*Deleted files do not show up in the recycle bin.
*No matter which browser (FF or MSIE) is set as default, when the default browser is reopened it always states to this effect: "This is not the default browser. Would you like to make it the default browser?"

These did not return to normal after doing a system restore to 3 weeks before the time the malware became apparent.
The system restore was done before eliminating the malware. The following were tried afterwards:

I agree with you and my wife wanted it back to a solid blue.
OK here is the steps
1. Right mouse on Desktop and select Personalize.
2. Select Windows Color at the bottom of the screen.
3. Uncheck the Enable Transparency.
4. Make sure you select the color you want. I still like dark blue and make sure you Color inensity is about 75%

Wow!
I am starting my guide with this three-letter word. After working for almost 2 hours I got this Windows 7 taskbar on my Windows Vista. As you might know, Microsoft has introduced a new taskbar for Windows 7 which is completely different from Windows Vista. I was looking around to remove the text from taskbar and finally succeed as well.
So, below is the guide to get Windows 7 taskbar on Windows Vista.
1. Download and install EnhanceMyVista from here.
2. Open EnhanceMyVista , go to Customization > Taskbar and select “Iconize your taskbar” option.
3. Save and close the program. Reboot your system.
4. Now, right click on taskbar, select Unlock taskbar. Once again right click on the quick launch area >View> select “Large Icons”.
5. Drag the top corner so that you can get a large taskbar like Windows 7.
6. After dragging it to the Windows 7 taskbar size, right click on taskbar and lock it.
7. Download this AERO VG theme and install it using any free software.(Read How to install third party themes in Vista for more reference).
8. You are done with a new Windows 7 taskbar.
9. Enjoy!!
If you have any doubts , feel free to ask by leaving a comment.

Hello Guys,

Got around to installing Windows 7 on my home desktop and laptop. Am rather impressed with everything compared to Vista (speed, etc) but have one big annoyance - the taskbar.

I have my taskbar set to traditional mode where each window gets its own taskbar item (ie if I have 4 Firefox windows open, I have 4 Firefox taskbar items show up). I also don't use the Pin functionality as I dislike it.

In <=Vista, every time a new window opened, it would open to the right of the taskbar. In 7, it likes to group applications of the same type (Firefox for example) together. Any way I can get it to revert to how <=Vista did it?

I also have the same problem with system tray icons.

Best Regards,
Craig Brass

This problem is hard to describe. I have the Word (2007) icon pinned to the taskbar in Windows 7, and previously when I right clicked it, I could see the list of recently used docs, and I had a few docs permanently pinned to the list. Worked great! However, recently the MRU list and the pinned items disappeared from the Word icon list. Now, when I right click the Word icon on the taskbar, I only see the following items listed:

Microsoft Office Word 2007
Unpin this program from taskbar
Close window.

There's nothing else listed! This problem only seems to affect Word. Other programs (such as other Office apps like Excel) are not affected.

I ran an Office repair but no luck.

Any suggestions?

Thanks!Darryl Gittins

Answer:The MRU and pinned items disappeared from the Word icon that's pinned to Windows 7 taskbar

Hi,If the issue occurs recently, a system restore might be of help. Is there any change before the issue occurs?By default, most of the jump list history is saved under %APPDATA%\Microsoft\Windows\Recent\AutomaticDestinations as *.automaticDestinations-ms files. For Example, adecfb853d77462a.automaticDestinations-ms is for WORD. The Item that pinned to taskbar was saved under %APPDATA%\\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch\User Pinned\TaskBarClick Start, copy "%APPDATA%\Microsoft\Windows\Recent\AutomaticDestinations" (without quotation marks) to the search command line and Enter. In the open window, find the adecfb853d77462a.automaticDestinations-ms, what is the "Date modified". Right click on it and choose "restore previous versions" if there is any. Close the window and check the result. If still no go, simply delete it. Meanwhile, delete all the files under the folder TaskBar too. Close the window and recheck.

Hi,

I wonder if anyone can help, I have windows 7, I am not sure what has happened but about every 12 seconds or so the taskbar blinks on and off and closes down any folder or programme I was opening, I can open internet explorer, but as I type when it blinks it stops typing. I have also noticed when it blinks the CPU usage goes up to about 41%.

I have run scans including Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and it doesnt find anything, also I noticed that this wasnt a problem when I created a new user account, but it started again when I gave the new account administrator rights.

Any help on this would be greatly appreciated

Thanks,

I have 14 web pages on my taskbar minimized in one group. Most of them won't open when I click on the taskbar and they pop up and wheni click on the web site name to open the web page. I've tried right-clicking on the web page name and then 'restore' or 'maximiz'. Some of the pages open and most others won't.

Using internet explorer version: 6.0.2900.2100.xp_sp2_gdr.050301-1519 Update SP2

My Computer:
win xp home sp2 computer with “ASROCK” socket 775VM800 motherboard with
“VIA P4M800 Chipset”.
Processor: P4 2.66 ghz with 800 mhz FSB, 1.4 GB RAM, onboard video RAM 64 MB

Also I checked the windows task manager and my page file is 1 GB. That seems to be very big to me though I know nothing about it. I just checked and remembered my friend told me to set the page file at 2048 MB, which is what it is at. At one point when I first tried to set this, It wouldn't let me. This was long ago. So now I don't know why it is accepting it now.

The CPU performance was about 4% I think.

Attached is the performance screenshot.

This has happened before when web pages would not open when over 10 were in the same group on the taskbar.

Answer:webpages on taskbar won't open-pg file 1GB

Using IE6 these 14 pages are being put into cache and if the cache gets to its limits some of the sites may be truncated or dumped. At least this is what I think is happening. I would suggest upgrading to IE7 that uses tabbed browsing and should handle a bunch of pages without doing this to the pages.

I would get the download thru Microsoft not windows update at the following page:

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/downloads/ie/getitnow.mspx

Hello,
I have been scratching my head for a couple of days with this one and I have still not resolved it.  We are using folder redirection (deployed via group policy) for my documents, pictures and favorites.  The problem I have on my computer is that
even though the event viewer for my computer suggests it has all redirected correctly with event id 501 "Successfully applied policy and redirected folder <foldername> to <UNCPATH>".  I have tried deleting my user profile and letting
it re-create itself.  Moved my home drive onto another 2008 R2 file server.  Confirmed that the permissions are based on the following MS article;
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2512089 .  Tried clean-booting the OS, but still no icon in the taskbar or partnership listed in sync center, even though I can work offline/online with the explorer
buttons.  I can confirm that the offline files is working in the background as when I work in offline mode, then create a directory/file locally and then reconnect, I can see the data move to the server.
What is going on?  I am at the stage of completely ditching my machine!
Cheers

Answer:Windows 7 Sync Center Taskbar Icon disappeared & no offline files partnership also

I have re-built my computer as I could not live with this issue any longer.  On rebuild it all works as it should, so I do not understand what happened.  Obviously, offline-files still has operational issues that cant be explained, and although
you can turn on verbose logging in event viewer, it is still a technology that still has some way to go in terms of further development.  There is not a real alternative to offline-files, so we will have to make do for the moment.  Don't get me wrong,
it is a step in the right direction from the old XP days, but I think it needs to be improved so that troubleshooting can be made a little easier when things do go wrong.

Question: No taskbar items

When I start up, none of the task bar icons appear for volume control, Nvidia settings etc. I've just got the clock. MSCONFIG tells me that the programs are still loading at startup, as does Autoruns and windows still starts at the same speed it always has done, which suggests that the programs are still loading, but not displaying their task bar items. I'm running Windoes XP SP3. Any ideas?

Windows 8.1
When I click on any taskbar icon (sound, wifi, ext) the option box comes up as normal, except there is a little space that is maybe 1/10th of an inch between the taskbar and the clickable options. as soon as my mouse hits the empty space to get to the options, they will disappear as if i clicked somewhere else on the page. This makes it impossible to change the sound using the mouse. Another issue (I'm sure its the same problem) is when i have multiple windows open that are not maximized if i move my mouse off of a window that has a different window behind it, it will go to the new window its on. The only way I can get back to the original window it to minimize everything else except for the one I want (because it got moved to the very back). I realize that these bugs are very hard to describe without actually seeing it happen.

Hi,
My PC has decided to not show up my taskbar items today! The only icons are: Start button, cortana, task view and the notification center. The thing is that none of these will open and all my other icons are gone, even the date and time. I have tried to restart my pc and explorer.exe with no luck, and when i try customizing the taskbar i get an error saying there is no default control panel. Oh and also none of my startup programs start!

Answer:Taskbar Items Gone - Need Help

Hi, welcome to tenforums.
Basics: do you have any system restore points (is system restore enabled), or recent disk images?

Can you remember the last thing you did?
How do you know your startup programs are not running- apart from any icons etc that you might expect to be visible, have you checked using task manager? (Can you launch the task manager?)

Do you have a Win 10 installation disk for your current build (probably 10586)?

Does your PC respond if you press Win key + X?

I suggest running
Chkdsk C: /F
and
SFC /Scannow
(both from an elevated command prompt).

This should help with SFC /Scannow:
SFC Command - Run in Windows 10 - Windows 10 Forums
If you need to follow the instructions as to how to do that at boot, make sure you click on the relevant hyperlink (blue) in the text.

If no problems are found, and your symptoms remain, then it may be appropriate to do an in place upgrade repair install. (Instructions are available in the Tutorial section).

I guess I did something.. don't know what. I have Win XP with updates.. don't have SP3 yet. don't know why.

But, the question of the moment is that I have three new icons in my taskmanager (?) bottom right of screen that weren't there yesterday before I was messing.

Scroll over shows:
Unknown-\\-MSSQLSERVER
Netwaiting (yellow phone and I'm using DSL)
Synaptics Pointing Device

How do I permanently get these off my taskmanager bar?

Thank you , Bill

Answer:Help! New Items in Taskbar

An icon usually appears in the taskbar after you've installed a program and it installs itself to load during startup and run in the background.

Many programs will do that, although it's not necessary for them to load and run.

The way to prevent this from continuing is to go into the program's options/preferences settings and disable any commands that allow it to load and run.

Another way is to go into Start - Run - MSCONFIG - OK - "Startup" tab and uncheck the entry(ies) for that program.

This is a good site for managing the MSCONFIG startup list:

http://www.sysinfo.org/startuplist.php?type=&filter=&count=100&offset=0

---------------------------------------------------------------

Synaptics Pointing Device is associated with a laptop touchpad. There's usually 1 or 2 entries in the startup list that start with "SynTP - -".

If you just use the basic touchpad functions or if you use an external mouse, you can disable the entry(ies).

Well, I'm sure this has probably been posted a million times, except none of those solutions in those threads have helped, so I need some new advice.

Basically, I cannot pin items.

I do get a 'Pin this program to taskbar' when right clicking a program that is running. When clicking this, it simply won't pin.
I cannot drag items to the taskbar, I get a red cross.

I have NOT removed the shortcut icon (the little arrow) that seems to be causing an error similar to this, and my "lnkfile" registry item is fine. It still has the "IsShortcut" item.

This problem simply happened one day (quite a while ago) and whilst I can probably restore to that date, I want to avoid that as I've installed quite a few bits of software since then. The only reason I ask today is that I lost my Windows Explorer shortcut on the taskbar, and that is really needed.

Please help, this problem is an absolute pain.

Answer:Cannot pin items to the taskbar

Hi, Welcome to Seven forums.

Go to Run: gpedit.msc
User Configuration -> Administrative Templates -> Start Menu and Taskbar
Do not allow pinning programs to the Taskbar.

Make sure this is not set. If it is, change it to 'Not Configured and reboot. Check now.

Keep us posted.

b. pop up but I can not click on anything
c. pop up at the top left corner of the screen, where the programs small icon is
d. pop up randomly near the task bar

I've searched online for a solution and I'm completely stumped. I've did a bunch of reg scans and fixes, CCleaner, virus and malware scan, and it still is occuring. I have not tried to boot in safe mode to see if it is still happening. I am running Windows Vista 64bit on a HP dv4 with 4GB ram.

This is very annoying and any help would be appreciated!

Hi,

If this issue started occurring after doing some recent software changes on your computer, then I would suggest you to restore your system back to a date when it was working fine. System Restore will affect Windows system files, programs, and registry settings only.

I've reorganised my Windows 7 layout to increase the active screen height, including moving the taskbar to the left. By default, this puts the Start button and Quick Launch items at the top, with the notification area at the bottom. I guess I'm aiming for an unachievable tweak, but is there any way of reversing this to put the Start button and QL icons at the bottom so they live in the more familiar bottom left corner?

This might seem like a weird request, and probably not possible.

I have two programs I run at work that are ALWAYS used together, but not used that often. When I need them I have to click both in the taskbar (yes I know not that difficult)

Is there some way to link two items in taskbar so that when you click either it brings up both windows?

Answer:Possible to Link Two items in Taskbar?

Yes it's possible, but you'll have to create a batch file [.bat] to do it.

See if this video helps, it shows how to create the .bat from either a shortcut or directly from a program file:
The creator of this video "Chris" says you can save this shortcut anywhere, but you won't be able to drag it directly to the taskbar the .bat file needs a bit more schmoozing, and there are different ways to do that.

See: How to place a .bat file on the taskbar | google search

I use a couple taskbar pinned websites. Namely Facebook and Amazon. These are pinned from IE11 since Edge doesn't support. Useful and if I right click all sorts of handy shortcut. However, initially the pinned icon (or favicon) was the nice 64x64 type but over time the icons have reverted to unsightly 16x16 and I cannot get them back to their former glory. I have tried unpinning and repining them with no joy. Sometimes the facebook one reverts to the 64x64 but within days/weeks it returns to the unsightly small icon. Is there anything I can do? I can run task manager, and can run new tasks from there (though i don't know how, exept for the internet)

When i type explore.exe into the new task bar it comes up with a pop up message sayign Explore has encountered a serious problem and needs to close etc.

First time this happened was after a repair install, which i performed with the advice of someone else.

So my first question is, how do i get my taskbar and icons back???PLEASE!!!!
Secondly, how do i get explorer back!!??
Thirdly, How do i run programs such as games or open folders without explore?

Thanks.

Have you tried running system restore to a point before the problems?Don't know if it will help but type in c:\windows\system32\restore\rstrui.exe (your path MAY be different)from system manager and see if it can help.

Might also try running sfc /scannow (notice space before slash) with your xp cd.

You mean if you open 3 instances of Firefox (not tabs but browser windows) and 2 of MSIE you see the main icon with folders behind them with Firefox and MSIE, if that is it that is the way it is and no changing AFAIK.

Hi,

As my pc is very slow (Intel Pentium 4 2.8GHz lol) I decided to run ccleaner again and make a virus scan. Some viruses were found and a lot of crap was deleted with ccleaner, I also disabled some things in the boot menu with ccleaner (or what is it called?). After that I turned my pc off but first Windows had to do some update.
The next time I started my pc the taskbar and desktop were gone, the only thing that is there when it starts is a window with the drives etc.
Things I tried/read in various forums:
- ctrl-alt-delete -> run -> explorer.exe -> normally the taskbar should show up but it opens another window with the drives
- replaced the explorer.exe file, nothing changed
- installed another anti-virus program, deleted some malware
- some other things I already forgot

Any other ideas? I'm trying to solve this for 2 days without any luck...

EDIT: Forgot to mention, if I go to the control panel and click on "Taskbar and start menu" nothing happens, it doesn't open any window. Also, if I set a background and reboot the pc again, the background will be gone.

I have Windows 10 and I have Classic Shell installed.

I like my taskbar items to be Uncombined, Showing labels.

But no matter what settings I try, my taskbar no longer displays items with a border. If you see my screenshot, you'll see the items on my taskbar are displayed as just words, with no border around them.
How do I get the appearance of a border back, like I had in Windows 7?
Thanks!

Answer:border around items in the taskbar

Borders are removed in Windows 10. Only Windows 8.1 and earlier have borders.

Hey guys,This isn't a problem but I was wondering if there was a way to remove the icons of "Past items" from the task bar menu as I do not use the programs anymore.  I have Windows XP Home SP2.Thanks

Answer:Past items in taskbar

Yes there certainly is a way to do that. Select start and select Run...Type Regedit and press enterNavigate to the following key:HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\TrayNotifyBefore you do anything else you should backup the key.Do this by right clicking the TrayNotify folder and select Export.Give your backup a name and save it somewhere you can easily find it again. After you've made a backup delete the values called IconStreams and PastIconStream from TrayNotify. Now reboot your computer and you're done.

I've been using my dad's HP Pavilion as a standby until I can get together funds to buy a PC but I'm having a major issue with the inability to pin any items to the taskbar.

Methods tried:

Right-clicking the program or folder while it's open
Dragging the program from the desktop
Right-clicking the item on the start screen
Right-clicking the item from the apps list
Right-clicking the item from the 'search' menu

I did have an issue with Google Chrome providing the option of "Unpin to taskbar" on the Start screen, but "Pin to taskbar" on the Desktop screen. Chrome will also not pin to the start screen - it's the only program I've had this problem with, but the only program I've been able to pin to the taskbar is "File Explorer."

Screenshots attached.

I've run a batch file on here to delete/reset items pinned to the Taskbar, but it doesn't seem to have helped at all.

I have found everything but what I am looking for!

UNPIN UNWANTED ICONS FROM TASK BAR
I just upgraded two systems to Win 10 this weekend but am having trouble finding out how to remove unwanted icons from the task bar.
DesktopDownloadsPicturesDocumentsMusic

These take up space I prefer to use for desired icons. I don't need or want them there but there is no "un-pin" option for those. I have searched and all I can find are results to hide the entire task bar or instructions on how to add to the taskbar but not a word on how to remove those unwanted items.

I would also like to know how I can un-pin one specific drive which is encrypted so it is not available on taskbar...it always wants me to format it! Better to hide from taskbar. Still needs to remain visible to encryption program of course.

I still have time to return to Win 7 if I find Win 10 to be un-user friendly so hope someone has solved some of the problems with the upgrade.

( I already turned off all the privacy leaks MS installed ! )

Thanks!

Answer:How to get rid of unwanted taskbar items?

I guess you mean the start menu not the task bar?

The task bar is at the bottom of the screen all the time and doesn't show any of these things (by default). It looks like this..

The start menu is what pops up when you press the key and looks like this...

If you mean the things circuled in red you can chose which by going to start menu and searching for Choose which folders appear on start and turn then on and off.

Let us know if that is what you mean If you really mean the taskbar then just right click and up-pin them.

Hey guys, I have a very annoying problem that probably has an easy fix that I just can't figure out. I have to select the option to "Never Combine" taskbar items.

So when I have it set on 2 rows, they do not line up. They always lined up in XP and I'm sure its an easy fix, I mean it has to be why would they change something for the worse right?

Thanks all!

I am running Windows Vista on a Dell laptop (xpsm1710). Every time I restart I get these three programs running in the taskbar (on the right hand side). I would like to permanently kill these guys. Here they are:

1. Java Updater - This one even has a dialog where I have checked the "Never check for updates" box three times. Every time I restart, there it is again telling me that a new version of Java is available. I even tried run>msconfig>startup and unchecked the box (How can I REMOVE the item from the list?). I would like to know how to remove the item from running on restart. I seem to remember in windows 98 you could remove items from the startup in msconfig, but not now. Does anyone know how to do this?

2. Dell support center updates. Same as above, I can see it in msconfig, I can uncheck the box in msconfig, but when I restart the PC the program restarts. Looking at msconfig, the box is checked again!

3. Dell transfer agent. Same as above.

4. Quicktime. This doesn't show in the taskbar, but I can see it in task monitor and kill it there. I hate this damn thing. I rarely use quicktime, so why do I need it running in the background? Answer: I don't!
Please help me.

I cannot click on any items in my taskbar. When I rightclick on an item it brings up the options for the taskbar (lock/unlock, properties, etc...). There are also three blue boxes that I cannot click or see what they are. Does anyone know what this problem and/or know how to fix this? I have done system restore and rebooted and I still get the same thing. Thanks

Answer:Cannot click items in taskbar

Check into spoof or malware. Your desktop background could be a snapshot of an old desktop. Attempt to open a few seldom used programs. It the taskbar icon matches, then I am wrong about the malware.

Keyboard "alt+tab" for each press of 'tab' while holding 'alt' will cycle through the programs open on the taskbar.

There may be other jiffy tests.

Hi,

I am looking for a way to assign hotkeys to open items in the taskbar. By default, WIN+<1-0> will open items 1-10 on the taskbar. I need access to 14 items, however.

Is there a way to do this with Windows by default? If not, is there an application that someone can recommend?

Thanks!

I am running Windows 7 Home Premium 32 bit on a Dell Inspiron 1501.

A few of my items that were pinned in the taskbar started disappearing from the bar. I have tried selecting Pin to Taskbar, I have unpinned them and then pinned them again; I even removed them from the folder itself and then tried pinning once more. None of that worked.

I also have a problem with programs not showing up as recent items in the Start menu. I do have both the "Store and display recently opened programs in the Start Menu" and Store and display recently opened items in the Start Menu and taskbar" checked.

Does anyone know how I can fix these problems? Thank you.

Hey there, i'm not sure if this is the correct forum so i apologize in advance if it is.

This problem started about a year ago, and it's been a rather difficult one to find on the net.

The problem:
When clicking on certain items on the taskbar (especially the "folder" shortcut and the Google chrome shortcut) it pops up a small window with all open windows by the application as intended.
However, i am not able to click the windows that pop up. The only way for me to navigate between windows is by using Alt+Tab all the time which is frankly really annoying.

The cause:
I have yet to observe an actual trigger for this problem.
It works properly for some time after rebooting/restarting explorer, but will eventually start causing this problem.

Workaround:
A decent workaround i am using is dropping the explorer process and restarting it.
While this works, the problem will reoccur within 1-2 hours just like rebooting the PC.
A bunch of windows close by sinking explorer, which is extremely annoying for me since i use alot of folder tabbs.

Extra info:
When dragging the mouse over windows opened after clicking on the taskbar, they do not light up as clickable items when this error is going on.
Windows 7 64Bit Home premium.
I update drivers regulary so i doubt that's the problem.

Any help is appreciated,
If you need any more info i'm happy to oblige.

Thank in advance

I have some pinned icons on taskbar. For example I have icon of Delphi. If I have opened for example 3 projects, I can see 3 icons of Delphi with text (I use option Never combine taskbar buttons).

But I have problem with changing order in 'delphi group'. If my computer go to sleep, or screen saver was activated, I can have then these 3 icons in different order.
For example at first I have this order of my project: Project1, Project2, Project3.
After restore PC from sleep or unlock PC after screensaver I have totaly random order. For example I can have Project3, Project1, Project2.

Is there any chance how can I manualy change order of icons in one application group in 'Never combine' mode?
Thanks.

Answer:How to move with items in group on taskbar?

Hello Mark, and welcome to Seven Forums.

Unfortunately, no way that I know of. The order is determined by the same order that they were loaded instead.

Hello!
This morning I launched the Task Manager via right-click context menu on the taskbar.
After clicking the Task Manager the menu items went away as per usual but the single "Start Task Manager" item remained. It occupies a top level status, i.e. it is on top of all other windows, I can still see it now.

This has happened to me several times, also from the tray, and I usually have to solve the problem by rebooting but there has to be a solution.

Any ideas?
Thanks!

Answer:Taskbar context menu items not going away.

Have you tried right clicking on the desktop and hittig Refresh? I can remember this happening to me on older Windows flavors. I don't remember any "fix" for it though. You could try anything that purges the desktop, system menu or other Explorer cache. But that's just a guess.

Answer:Pinning items to taskbar question.

Hello Jacatone,

Only programs will have the "Pin to taskbar" option, but you can use the method in the tutorial below to pin the folder as a toolbar on the taskbar though.Taskbar - Pin or Unpin a Folder
....or you could create a shortcut of the folder in Quick Launch on the taskbar.Quick Launch - Enable or Disable

Hope this helps,

My HP Athlon desktop with WinXP SP2 has started acting crazy. It (seems to) boot normally but after a couple seconds the taskbar and desktop icons disappear leaving only the wallpaper and mouse cursor.

The only way I can start a program is opening a taskmanager window, (Cntrl-Alt-Del)clicking New Process and navigating to an .exe file. Many times when trying to open a 2nd program, the system re-boots itself.

I did manage to get AVG anti virus to scan the system, but it hasn't found anything, nor did PCPitstop.

I was thinking it may be a Trojan type virus, but now think maybe a simple setting will fix it.

Suggestions much appreciated!

Bill

To use my screen space more optimally, I'd like a way to decrease all the extra spacing and padding which Basic/Aero themes insert inside and around items on the taskbar. The default Classic theme has much less padding there - that's what I want to have in Aero and Basic.

These are the elements I'm talking about:
- The spacing between toolbar icons (like the Quicklaunch toolbar which I've re-enabled)
- The padding *inside* taskbar buttons
- The spacing between notification area (system tray) icons

So far, the only way I've found to make the taskbar more compact was to decrease the size of 'Caption Buttons' (under "advanced appearance settings")... but this shrinks down all graphical elements, including icons - not just the caption buttons. I want to keep them at the default size (16x16?), just with less padding.

I've seen custom themes that do this, so I know the setting can be changed - how do I control this myself (while using an arbitrary theme)? I've never used a theme customizer or similar, so a detailed answer would be appreciated.

thanks!

Hey,
Quick question:
Does anyone know if there is a hotkey to close an item on the taskbar?
I know you can open them with Windows key+ 1,2,3,etc

But for example if I am watching a video in firefox (current window) and want to exit my music player(songbird, minimized in the background) So i can hear the video, is there a hotkey where i can simply press some key combination and select its number on the taskbar?

Thanks

Hi everyone,

I have this problem with clicking on items in my task bar such as items in a group(like MSN's windows) or the items on my start menu cannot even be selected. Here are two screen shots.

For this picture, it shows that i can't even select item from my start menu.

For this picture, i wanted to click on the item to maximise it but it is not able to at all. Additionally, i think this problem also causes my keyboard to be not functioning while i am playing Final Fantasy 11.

I am using Windows XP Home edition. Is there any more information you would require? Thank you very much for your help.

OK,

I have ungrouped my applications in the taskbar by going to taskbar properties, and selecting the taskbar buttons to never combine, but I still have this:

When I open multiple instances of an application (i.e. 3 windows explorer windows and 3 IE windows) all of the like applications will stay together. When I try to move them on the task bar to the left or right, they all group together and move as a group and not individually.

How do I get the task bar items to display in the order they were opened and not group together?

oh... I have no items "pinned"
James

Answer:Taskbar items all lumped together after ungrouping

For me the solution was to check the small icons box as well.
For some reason this was the only way it would work right for me.
