Preferred Solution: ZoneAlarm Firewall 9 Free version for Windows 7 released

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi Littlebits. Your post prompted me to read user reviews for ZoneAlarm. The toolbar fix may rectify the most common complaint expressed by users. Since we use Bitdefender Free, Malwarebytes, Zemana Anti-logger, & Windows Firewall for our Windows 8.1 system, I wanted to ask: 1) What are your thoughts on ZoneAlarm? ..and 2) Do you see weaknesses in this, our computer's (freeware) armor?

Hello, all.

I have a question regarding ZoneAlarm Free Firewall and a clean Windows 7 Pro install I did back in January of this year on an Asus N53 series laptop. I have been using ZoneAlarm Free firewall for many years with my Xp systems and decided to continue using it with my Windows 7 install. I am now reading that Zone Alarm has become (has been) very resource heavy and that the Windows 7 firewall is much improved over previous versions of Windows firewalls. So my question is, Is Zone Alarm still as resource heavy (version as of 1/2013 to present) as it has been in the past or has it improved?

Zone Alarm used to be a great firewall but I've heard it's nearly impossible to completely uninstall. I was thinking of uninstalling Zone Alarm and using the Windows 7 firewall or Comodo instead. Opinions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Answer:Windows 7 Pro and Zonealarm Free Firewall

Hello slipstream55 and welcome to Seven Forums.

Just my personal opinion FWIW. I've been using the built-in Windows 7 firewall without any problems. It's definitely more robust and user configurable than previous versions but like beauty, it's all in the eye of the beholder. Others may totally dislike the 7 firewall.

If you want to remove ZoneAlarm the do make an uninstall tool.

Or you could get the 30-day trial version of Revo Uninstaller which should also work.

Protects your applications from undesirable network incoming and outgoing activity, controls applications internet access.

Windows 7 Firewall Control is a lightweight application that allows you to control personal information leakage via controlling application network traffic. Manages and synchronizes port forwarding provided by external network connection (firewall/router) box with applications requirements and activity.

Windows 7 ships like previous Windows operating systems with a firewall. The firewall was introduced back then in Windows XP and has since then been constantly improved. The firewall in Windows 7 is a solid software firewall that does a good job of protecting the computer system from attacks. A comparison with commercial software firewalls reveals however that it is still not on pair with those programs especially where usability is concerned. One example would be the configuration of allowed applications in the private and public network space. Most third party firewalls will display a prompt whenever a new application tries to establish a connection. The Firewall in Windows 7 will block that attempt and the user has to configure the firewall rules in the control panel.

The Windows 7 Firewall Control program tries to change that. The software is available as a free version with limited functionality and a pro version that offers all the functionality but comes at a price. The free version is compatibly with 32-bit and 64-bit editions of Wi... Read more

Small application which provides quick access to the most frequent options used from Windows Firewall.

Windows Firewall Control is a small and easy to use application that runs in your system tray and provides quick access to the most frequent options used from Windows Firewall.

Microsoft Windows Vista and Windows 7 have already a built in default, free and powerfull firewalls, but unfortunately, they lack a simple interface to define own simple rules and can be difficult sometimes to configure them the right way. And here comes to help you, Windows Firewall Control, which is a small, intuitive and easy to use program that runs in taskbar, next to the system clock, and provides quick access to the most frequent options used from Windows Firewall, in all versions of Windows Vista and Windows 7.

Windows Firewall Control offers access to four filtering modes, each with their own status icon in system tray:
* High Filtering - All outgoing connections are blocked. Neither of programs can not initiate outgoing connections. This setting blocks all attempts to connect to and from your computer. With this setting, you aren't notified when Windows Firewall blocks programs, and programs in the list of allowed programs are ignored.

* Medium Filtering- Outgoing connections that do not match a rule are blocked. Only programs you allow can initiate outgoing connections. If you want to allow a program to communicate through the firewall, you can add it to the list of allowed program... Read more

RE: BiniSoft Windows Firewall Control Version: 3.7.0.5 released

BiniSoft Windows Firewall Control Version: 3.7.0.5 Released:

What's new in version 3.7.0.5

- New: Options tab contains now a new checkbox which when it is enabled prevents
other programs from creating new rules in Windows Firewall. In case of installing of
a new program which wants to add a new firewall exception, just uncheck this option
from WFC and the external setup can create a new rule, otherwise the rule will be
deleted automatically by WFC.
- New: Right click on the tray icon will open a context menu from where the user can
choose to open the Main Window, Manage Rules window or to Exit the application.
The Exit button from the Main Window was removed. The only way to exit the application
is the Exit menu item from the context menu.
- Fixed: The program crashes if the user chooses Cancel on the UAC message box.
- Fixed: If any dependant Windows service is stopped or set to disabled, it will be
started automatically at start-up of the GUI (wfc.exe). The dependant services
are: Windows Firewall Control, Windows Firewall and DNS Cache for the notifications.
- Fixed: Main window can be opened multiple times if the user clicks multiple times
very fast on the system tray icon of the application.
- Fixed: Browse to block button from the main window does not support *.bin or
*.setup files.

What do you think of Windows own firewall? Does it also stop outbound connections?

What is it like compared to Zone Alarm? Is ZA in itself any good?

Also, is there a tool similar to ZA's internet lock where you can temporarily enable / disable internet access?

Personally speaking I have never bothered with software firewalls. I've always used the Windows one and the hardware firewall included in your router.

Microsoft is forcing everybody to rethink the operating system that everybody loves to hate with Windows 8, and that includes security suite makers. Freeware faves AVG leap into the future today with a touch-friendly interface, a zippy installation, and impressively fast scans.
The upgrades are available at no cost as AVG Anti-Virus Free 2013 (download), or as a paid update to AVG Anti-Virus 2013 (download) and AVG Internet Security 2013 (download), exclusively from Download.com today.
Security vendor claims about being faster, or better, or able to protect your computer while doing your dishes, are perennial boasts. At least in the case of AVG 2013, CNET Labs has verified the company's talk about the 2013's performance gains. For our usual battery of tests, we found that AVG Anti-Virus Free 2013 actually bested an unprotected computer during the MS Office test. AVG Free completed the MS Office test in 354 seconds, while the unprotected computer took 395 seconds.
When I asked AVG evangelist Tony Anscombe about that, he explained that it has to do with how AVG 2013 performs its scans. "The new Turbo Scan checks files in the order that they're saved to the disk, as opposed to how they're saved in the file directory," he said during an interview at CNET's San Francisco offices in August.
AVG's internal benchmarks clocked "scan times up to 23.95 percent faster," Anscombe said. Meanwhile, CNET Labs' scan time results found... Read more

Quote from Zone Labs:
With over 17 million users of ZoneAlarm products, our primary concern with this launch is to provide a satisfactory upgrade experience for folks. To ensure that, we'll be making the upgrade available to a fixed percentage of our existing users every day, through the "Check for Updates" feature. This process will continue for several days before we officially announce ZoneAlarm on our site and make it available to the general public.

Answer:Zonealarm (free version) and broadband.

I have been using the free version of Zonealarm with Broadband for about 18 months and am more than satisfied with it ~ and I'm a bit paranoid about security! (even though a hacker probably doesn't want my holiday pics etc)No you won't have to reconfigure when you connect to Broadband. Any program that requires access to the internet shall request it and you can decide to allow once or permanently. If you upgrade a program Zonealarm will ask the next time it tries to connect to verify you are still happy to allow the connection.Dead easy and free!

Check Point's ZoneAlarm division plans to announce that it will give away free licenses to its ZoneAlarm Pro firewall software on "Patch Tuesday," or Tuesday, Oct. 13.

The free giveaway will take place on line for 24 hours, at ZoneAlarm's Web site here.

ZoneAlarm Pro is a subset of ZoneAlarm's security services, a step up from its free firewall but less protection than its ZoneAlarm Extreme Security 2010 suite offers.

ZoneAlarm Pro includes the two-way firewall, download monitoring, anti-phishing protection, plus a couple of advanced features: OSFirewall, which looks for changes in the OS that might have been missed by an antivirus program, and credit monitoring with the three major credit bureaus. The latter feature typically comes with a year's subscription.

ZoneAlarm Free Firewall continues to be one of the leading security solutions on the market, so today the application received a new update that?s supposed to enhance the protection offered to users.

ZoneAlarm Free Firewall 13 comes with enhanced stability, minor UI tweaks, but also with a new privacy toolbar that offers Internet Explorer 11 support. This means that full Windows 8.1 compatibility is also being offered, so you can install the app even if you?ve already made the move to Microsoft?s new OS version.

The feature lineup remains unchanged and includes a two-way firewall that blocks malicious applications from sending your data out to the Internet, but also advanced download protection to stop dangerous files from reaching your computer and an advanced firewall to stop attacks which anti-virus solutions cannot cope with.

The privacy and security toolbar also offers enhanced protection, offering site checking, do not track, Facebook privacy scan, and private browsing.

As you could easily guess, the application continues to be available free of charge and in addition to Windows 8.1, it also works quite flawlessly on all the other Windows versions still supported by Microsoft.

Having used Zonealarm on XP (old version with lock engage), is it worth using this (Checkpoint version) in conjunction with / as an alternative to Windows 10's firewall?

It's good to have the lock and know what programs (such as installed anti-virus etc) are trying to perform updates / call home.

What are people's thoughts?

I have been using ZA on W7 Ultimate for a year now and I like it. I also especially like that ease with which I can block outgoing sends from programs. Thanks K-7.

I run a dual-boot (XPx86/7x64) with a slew of legacy and newer games on XP. I kept XP because I still revisit the legacies and I did not want to go through the hassle of reinstalling all of the others on Win7.

I run the free Comodo Suite on Win7 but on the XP, I run ZA v.7 because I suffered the infamous ZA/ISP conflict with v. 8. After that I stopped upgrading and no longer follow ZA since my XP surfing is limited to known/safe sites, primarily game patches.

So I will give v. 9.2 a try.

This may seem a weird question, but I just installed this firewall and it appears to be working as intended. But when I click on the "Help" link, I get told (repeatedly) "Help not available."

I think it must have a Help menu - I can't see how it could not have one--but even a reinstall did not produce a help menu. Could it be that it was left out as it's the free version so that you'd be tempted to go to an upgrade?

Hi BC,
Haven't been here for awhile because all going very well. I am a longtime user of Firefox, Zonealarm free firewall, Avast & Malwarebytes.

A few days ago I upgraded Firefox to 4.0.1, mainly because it was said to have better security.

In looking over my list of extensions, there is mention of the Zonealarm security toolbar (3.3.5.1--latest) with no noted problem. However, further down the list is a warning that Zonealarm Security Engine (1.5.265.2--latest) is incompatible with this version of Firefox and is disabled.

Does this mean that when I am using Firefox, my Zonealarm firewall is completely shut off? If not, what part of the firewall is still functioning?

My main plan if there are no other suggestions is to go back to the prior version of Firefox.

Suggestions welcome. Thanks!

In cleaning up a mess over on the "HJT log" forum the advisor who helped me out noted that I'm only using the built-in Windows firewall, and that I really need a firewall that can monitor outgoing as well as incoming traffic. Based on my experience, I'm inclined to (belatedly) agree with him. He suggested either ZoneAlarm or PC Tool Firewall Plus.

I'm leaning towards ZoneAlarm, based on what I've heard in the past, but I would like to know if anyone has any experience in running the ZoneAlarm Free firewall with Avast! Antivirus 4.8 (free version). Will they work well together without conflicts? A quick check on Google was inconclusive.

Does anyone have any real-world experience?

I Am thinking of replacing the firewall of windows for zonealarm free firewall. Why? For improving, I suppose.
The truth is that the my computer is OK, when it had it with Online Armor free, the only thing that it was noticing is that it was late a few seconds more in starting, nothing more.
ZoneAlarm's idea is because it is an excellent firewall that does not have HIPS, according to Pcmag it is the best firewall of the market... I would like so much to know your opinions and that you were helping me to choose the best option.

Hi,

I just installed the new version of ZoneAlarm (6.0.667.000). I had the previous version, then I downloaded this new version and chose to do a fresh install (as it said that was the most stable way to do it). It did not say I needed to unintall the old version first. I have Windows 98SE and also use the free AVG.

Question:
Under Firewall - Zones: There are two things listed. The first is a "PPP Adapter" which lists an IP address (that changes each time I dial-up), Entry Type is "Adapter Subnet", and Zone is "Internet". I remember this being there with the older version of ZoneAlarm and believe it's supposed to be there.

However, there is now a second/new entry listed.

Name: Loopback adapter
IP Address/Site: 127.0.0.1
Entry Type: IP Address
Zone: Trusted

...however, I do have my security for the trusted zones set to high
just to be safe (as I do with the internet zone).

I tried looking this up in the ZoneAlarm help, and it talks about "VPN connections" which I have no idea what that is (and as far as I know, I don't have anything like that).

So, is this supposed to be listed? If so, why? If not, do I remove it? And am I okay having the Trusted Zones security level set to High just to be safe?

Thanks for the help!

Shoud I uninstall the old 8.x ZA b4 installing new 9.2? Maybe I'm missing something, but I can't seem to find anything on the ZA site???

And before I do this, has anyone else upgraded to ZA 9.2? Any major headaches or pitfalls to avoid? Any XP users having trouble updating to it?

Thanks,
dood1emom

Answer:ZoneAlarm Free Firewall 9.2 Install Question

Hi

Do you like ZA 8.x? if so why not try another antivirus application to see if plays better with ZA 8.x.. try Microsoft Security Essentials or Avast Free.

Personally I have not been a fan of ZA for years ever since the takeover by Checkpoint, personally I rate PCTools Free Firewall better, but thats my opinion, even though I dont use a 3rd party firewall, I just use the Firewall built into Windows 7 and my router + safe surfing.

I once tried using ZoneAlarm free and Avast on a Windows98 computer. It worked well but I haven't used it long enough to be sure.

I now have a chance to try ZoneAlarm free and Avast free on Windows2000 computer.
I'm uninstalling McAffee firewall and on-access scan (hope it does not leave traces!)

I intend to take the latest Avast, and ZA 6.5.714 (not 722 which is current, but has some issues with the hosts file). There is also Pest Patrol running as resident on this computer, a corporate version, not the one from CA.

I will be using Ad-Aware and Spybot S&D on demand.

Any suggestions? advice? golden thoughts on the mix and installation?

Answer:Do Zonealarm Firewall And Avast Free Coexist Well?

That should work fine. I would include the following free programs to help prevent spyware, homepage hijacking and increase your browser security:? SpywareGuard? SpywareBlaster? IE-SPYADAnd use Ewido Anti-Spyware v4.0 as a stand-alone scanner to supplement your anti-virus program.Ewido Install and Scan Instructions

Looks like others are having some problems also, but I downloaded and installed 3 updates this morning: KB951748, KB951978, and KB890830 and then Zone Alarm began blocking all incoming and outgoing including my dsl connection to at&t. I tried to do things in ZA, but nothing worked until I did a system restore back to yesterday.

Just in case it wasn't the updates but a fluke, I installed them again and same thing happened; ZA wouldn't even let SpySweeper or AVG free check for updates. So I did another system restore back to yesterday.

How can I figure out which one of these updates is messing up ZA? Is there a way to download and install the updates one at a time?

How do you let ZA know about this? I'd really like to do the updates.

Thanks for your help,
Jackiemarie

Answer:Free Zonealarm Firewall Blocking After Ms Updates

The culprit is update KB951748.You can uninstall it from Add Remove Programs. The problem appears to be limited to installations that use ZoneAlarm for a firewall. If that's you, here is an elegant solution, pending a more permanent fix from ZA.http://forum.zonelabs.org/zonelabs/board/m...essage.id=52727(credit to LoPhatPhuud in the Comcast Help Forums)From CWH803 in CHF:The ZoneAlarm Forum includes this 07-08-2008 03:47 PM post:"We are investigating the issue with the MS update KB951748. I have one of the Free versions that ZoneAlarm just gave away.

Are there any know issues or incompatibilities with this software now?

I know it didn't play nice with VISTA, so I dumped it in favorer of Online Anchor.. which worked great and I loved.. but OA is not Win7 compatible, so I'm forced to use Windows firewall, which isn't a major concern as I also use a Modem/Router with firewall, so it like wearing my pants with both belt and suspenders.. but it lets me sleep well at night.

Any feedback will be appreciated.

Thanks,

Hi everyone
New release of VMware workstation (Rel 9) and updated version of Free vmplayer released

Works fine on W8 x-64 Enterprise RTM (TechNet version - not the "Leaked version").

In addition to the info in Hopachi's post

So far -- Unity has support for Full screen
USB3 works fine too -- that's what made it for me the "Must have " upgrade.

I get it free from work anyway under corporate license.

Otherwise 119 USD for upgrade.

(VMware player though Free no expiration).

Hi there

I have the Outpost free version of firewall I have been very happy with it to date. However I noticed when I turned on my PC today the Outpost Icon which has always been blue is now green why? I noted if I right clicked on it and selected firewall pilicy it said Block Most (Im not sure what it said when it was blue). From memory it use to be blue with a white question mark where now its green with a white - sideways line on it as above.

When it was blue, the firewall policy was rules wizard.

To change it back; open outpost firewall, select settings. On the left hand side, select firewall. Drag the slider bar to the center dash -> click ok.

I am trying to download this Belkin Advisor program so I can have it tell me the guts of my computer for... who knows whar reason really. I got to get this info to Garmanma for him to help me. I successfully completed the download to my program files and when I clicked to open it I got an error message that read "not a valid Win 32 application". As I've seen this before today I thought maybe I should try opening the file with this new IZarc program to maybe unzip it..? I don't know what I'm doing really. So then I downloaded the Belcan Advisor again but this time I put it in my systems Win32 file and tried to open it from there. That error message read "access to the specified device or path or file is denied". What the heck am I doing wrong now? I re-read the Belcan sites FAQ and there was mention that my "firewall" might be denying something. I don't know that I have a firewall but I do have Avast downloaded on this Win2000 Pro and it's the free version and it seems to run all the time and I have never had this problem before so I don't know the answer. I have been happily using the free firewall software from zonealarm, which I like because it doesn't have a lot of pop ups - i find those things annoying. My friend said I should upgrade to the firewall pro - but I don't know if it's worth the money. The pro version from zonealarm is only $30 and it comes with antispywear and identity theft protection - but I'm still not sure why upgrading is necessary. Can someone please tell me if any of the features on the pro software are worth the upgrade:

ZoneAlarm Pro Firewall 2010: Web Security with Spyware Removal and Internet Firewall Protection Software

Answer:free firewall software vs. paid version?

Frankly, I find Windows Firewall completely and perfectly adequate and see no reason to use any 3rd party program (especially one you have to pay to get). Windows Firewall used with the proper security software - and there are excellent options that are all free if you want recommendations there - (as opposed to 3rd party commercial (paid) firewall software with features otherwise available), you can be very well (just as well) protected.

Although I didn't answer your question directly, I think you understand the meaning of the reply.

I hope this helps.

Good luck!

Power to the People

Your comments and suggestions have helped create one of the most exciting new versions in recent years. Over the years WinPatrol had grown with the ability to detect a large range of internal changes within Windows. In the process, WinPatrol lost its easy to use feel that encouraged you to tell your friends and family to download our program. Version 29, built on your feedback, returns WinPatrol to it's roots and will have you blogging and tweeting by the end of the week.

One complaint I've heard, especially from new users, is the volume of alert messages when there is a new program install or malware attack. Over the years, the number of critical locations monitored by WinPatrol has grown but it?s also source of frustration. While everyone appreciates WinPatrol alerting them to an infiltration, the number of locations we reveal combined with numerous malware pop ups is overwhelming.

Installing a legitimate program will typically cause new entries in the Startup Programs, an IE Helper or two and multiple Services. A malware attack may create 10 times the changes all generating individual warnings from WinPatrol. Instead of having to respond to each change most of us would rather just have everything fixed with a single action. That?s WinPatrol v29.

The new version will save users from as much frustration as possible and includes new options when unexpected changes occur. Based on a single user response, WinPatrol will evaluate a response ... Read more

NO, it's not advisable, they'll conflict, use ZoneAlarm only.General rules:1 One AntiVirus eg. AVG free or Avast2. One Firewall eg ZA or Sygate3. As many antispy progs as you like eg Ad-aware, spybot S&D, MS Antispyware.

Hi all, Just a question about firewalls, I have been using the free ZoneAlarm version and when i talked to some other computer people they said it was a waste, and i should just use the windows firewall. They said windows firewall is just as good as zonealarm and will not take up space on your computer. Is this correct? What about zonealarm pro? I would think that the professional one is better than windows firewall.

Answer:windows firewall and zonealarm

The Windows firewall only stops incoming traffic. It does not stop any outgoing traffic (for examply spyware/adware/keyloggers, etc.). ZoneAlarm free regulates your incoming and outgoing traffic. All the pro version does (trust me, I own it) is give some extra little features that I dont even use. The ZoneAlarm freeware version is an excellent Firewall. Once you get through the set-up/learning phase it is completely unintrusive. You do not even have to know it is working if you do not want to. Post any other questions you may have about Zone Alarm and I will try to answer them for you.

In my opinion, you are better off with ZoneAlarm than you are with Windows Firewall.

Hey,

Just built a new system and have my choice of 3 firewalls. Here's the deal.....

I have:
Windows Firewall from SP2
NVidia Firewall that came w/ my mobo
ZoneAlarm Pro 6 (paid for it)

So, obviously, I chose to run w/ ZoneAlarm

However, I notice that when i run zonealarm as the firewall, under Windows Security Center, under "Firewall", it says:
"ZoneAlarm Pro Firewall is currently ON........"

However, if i goto "manage security settings for: windows firewall", it says "Windows Firewall Off (not recommended)"

Is this supposed to happen? Does zonealarm OVERRIDE windows firewall? Or is it possible to keep both up and running?

Seems like ZA always turns off Windows Firewall.

Hi
I've been running ZoneAlarm on my Windows 10 PC without issue since I upgraded to Windows 10

Over the last few days my PC is telling me Zonealarm and the Windows firewall are turned off.
I'm given the open to enable either. I can enable the Windows firewall, but Zonealarm won't enable.

Any one any ideas how I can enable Zonealarm ?

I prefer to use Zonealarm as it will actively REJECT packets to Port 113 IDENT, where as Windows firewall BLOCKS it.
I telnet to a lot of local network devices, using REJECT the telnet connection is instant.. with BLOCK it takes 10 - 20 seconds.

Any ideas ? How to get Zonealarm to work again ?

Thanks

Answer:Zonealarm & Windows 10 - NO Firewall !

Hi:

I don't use ZA and am not yet on Win10, but have you tried a clean reinstall of ZA (especially if you upgraded to Win10 with it already installed)?

Also, see here: http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/w...c1f3a5c?auth=1
I don't know if is the exact same issue you describe, but it seems relevant.

Perhaps someone more facile with Win10 and more familiar with ZA will have some other suggestions.

Cheers,
MM

Hi

I've used ZoneAlarm for years as it actively rejects Ident packets. I've now found another way to do this, so I'm considering if it's time to move away from ZoneAlarm.

I currently have ZoneAlarm Free AV & Firewall, Avast AV, MalwareBytes and SpyBot Search and Destroy for scanning..

Would it be worth ditching ZoneAlarm AV / Firewall and using Windows Firewall with Avast, MalwareBytes and Spybot ?

Thanks
