I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

My Dell D505 started acting up recently.
When I would boot sometimes it would beep 4 or 5 times (short beeps no long pauses) and then go to Windows no problems.
Sometimes it would beep 2 times and write "Strike the F1 key to continue, F2 to run the setup utility". Nothing else, no other diagnostics. Hitting either F1 or F2 would not work, and I had to power down and power up again, then it would work normally.

Starting from today it beeps 2 times, writes "Strike the F1 key to continue, F2 to run the setup utility" and no amount of power downs helps. F1 and F2 don't work either, however I discovered by accident that hitting Fn+F1 actually gets me to the first page of the setup, while hitting Fn+F3 gets me to the 7th page :?
In setup I've disabled internal modem and all the other peripherals, removed everything but the HDD and CDROM from the boot sequence, changed POST to thorough mode, but nothing helps.

I've tried reseating RAM, I've tried booting without the HDD (It would then at least write that primary disk was not found), disassembling the laptop and plugging/unplugging the keyboard+touchpad connectors.

Any ideas?

Answer:Dell D505 beeps twice and writes "Strike the F1 key to continue, F2 to run setup..."

Some component of the hardware is bad... could be anything... and the beep codes help tell what it is. There is a list of beep codes posted by tipstir, I believe, elsewhere on this TechSpot site.

Have you tried booting to SAFE MODE by repeately depressing the <F8> key as soon as you depress the power button? If it boots to SAFE MODE you know it is repairable.

Otherwise, trouble shoot for power supply failure, hard drive failure, cpu fan failing, modem or ethernet socket, video graphics card... ore even sound card... any defective component can cause an alert.
Or it could be overheating due to lint, dirt, dust in the fan or cooling channels.
When you try booting without the HDD, at least put a bootable CD into the optical drive.
Good luck. Let us know your diagnosis.

Two Dell computers: Optiplex GX270 and Dimension 8400

I bought two replacement boards from Dell this week and installed one yesterday and one today. Both boards pause indefinitely in the POST and ask me to "Strike F1 to continue, F2 to enter Setup" and goes no further until I make a choice.

How do I get them to bypass this "Strike F1" thing?

I have been through the BIOS and I cannot find a setting that changes this condition.

Hi guys,
I have a machine here with XP home installed on it (appears to be SP2, I can't find KB936929 in the C:\WINDOWS\$hf_mig$ folder though i may be looking in the wrong place) which pops up with the error at boot up saying "Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:
Press r to repair etc, so i thought ok no problem, pop the disc in, set bios to boot off cd, boot up & when I hit enter at the first prompt, it starts spinning the disc up, when the second prompt "press any key to boot from cd" comes up, it won't boot no matter what i press. I've tried different KB's (usb & ps2) but no joy. However, I did have some sucess when i pulled the hdd out & tried to boot into knoppix live disc, no problems. So i tried to boot off the XP disc (with hdd out) & it booted. Put the hdd back in & no boot. I popped a new hdd i had in the shop in just to check I was on the right track & it started to boot, so I'm thinking it's got to be hdd related. Does this sound to anyone like hdd is unservicable? Should I just replace it? or does it sound like something that can be rectified on the hdd?
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! cheers!

Answer:XP Install disc won't boot past "Hit any key to continue"

Hey!... I know my suggeston sounds a little wierd...Do you use an USB keyboard to press the keys ?... Cause if you do Most of the time it does get accepted..I have had the same trouble in going to the Advanced config menu while windows boots up

I sent an email to a few hundred people and for around 40 of them i got this "Warning: message could not send for the past 4 hours" email back. I understand that its not a Fail message and this this is one of those "there are no stupid questions" things but i would like to know:

What does this mean anyway?
Does the person receive my email if i do not get a Failure message after this?
Is there a way that i will not receive this message and only receive total failure messages?

I had the a few hundred other messages go through fine so i don't understand what causes this to happen to just a few dozen emails.

Thank you for being kind to Stupid Questions

Answer:Solved: What does "Warning: message could not send for the past 4 hours" mean anyway?

Let's say I work for a company whose email goes to; you send to me at [email protected] and get one of those messages back. The message means, in essence, that your mail got to, but some kind of problem with the system prevented the message from being sent to my actual mail server or computer. It's possible that the reason my be that I was fired and you will eventually get a "hard" failure message, but generally it means that abc will fix their system and the message will eventually get to me.

I'm sure there are some exceptions but, in general, I will get the message if you don't latter get a "hard" failure message.

I just reinstalled Windows XP on a Dell Dimension 4550 by booting off the CD and reformatting the hard drive. However when I restart the very first time, I get this error message:

strike F1 to retry boot, F2 for setup utility

I have tried reformatting the computer many times with different OS disk including XP home and professional. I am using the retail XP disks not the ones from dell.

The weird thing is that the computer will boot up fine if I leave the XP install disk in the drive, and don't press anything when it says "Press any key to boot off cd....." After it bypasses the XP boot cd, then the computer will boot up into XP with no problem. However, as soon as I take the XP install disk out, I get the strike F1 to retry boot error.

This seems really strange because the hard drive is obviously fine, so why would putting the XP install disc in the computer make it boot off the hard drive when normally it will not? I have tried changing the boot settings in the BIOS and I even upgraded to the newest BIOS. Thank you for any help.

Answer:Error "strike F1 to retry boot, F2 for setup utility" but HD is fine (DELL)

Boot from the windows disk, go into the recovery console, and type in fixboot and fixmbr. Restart. Should hopefully fix your issue.

I'm running Windows 7 on a DELL XPS. Before this happened a disk scan was running and I reset the computer before it was finished. It restarted the first time, but by the time I got back to the computer it was on the "Strike f1 to retry boot" screen.I've tried turning on CAPS LOCK, NUM LOCK & SCROLL LOCK and hitting ALT - E,F,B, but that did not seem to work. I don't know if I did the combination work or something, but I tried a variety of combos and none of them seemed to work. I also tried reloading the default settings in the Boot options menu and that did not seem to help either. I've read resetting the BIOS is a possible solution, but I'm not sure what the next step is at this point.Any help would be greatly appreciated.* UPDATE: I just ran a diagnostics test and it said Error Code 0141 - No Drive Detected

Answer:Getting "Strike f1 to retry boot" "Error Code 0141 - No Drive Detected"

Its having issues detecting the hard drive. What is the exact make/model number of this computer?Curious as to why you didnt allow it to finish properly? Did it take forever getting hung at a certain point of the scandisk in which you told it to reboot because it was not progressing further? I have a strong feeling you will need to replace the hard drive. The system sensed an issue with the drive before it died and it attempted a scandisk to try to repair, and right now it sounds like the issue with the drive got worse from the point in which the system detected a scandisk was necessary to correct for errors.

Last night, I attempted to install a linux distro alongside 7, the installation failed, so I gave up and just rebooted to 7.

It got stuck on the "Starting Windows" screen, so I preformed hard shutdown and when to the "Startup Repair" utility and it attempted repairs, it then said that the repairs were unsuccessful, so I restarted and windows loaded to the desktop. Success! or so I thought...

After a while, I shut my laptop down and went to bed (as you do). When I needed to use it this morning, it wouldn't load past the "Starting Windows" screen again, so I shut it down and restarted and it went the desktop.

Answer:Occasionally wont load past "Starting Windows" screen

Can you access the Advanced boot options?

Advanced Boot Options
Choose Last known Good Configuration

Use the up-arrow and down-arrow keys to move the menu’s highlight to Last Known Good Configuration (Advanced), and then press Enter as the mouse won’t work at this screen.

Your computer should load successfully, and Windows 7 will discard the bad configuration and return permanently to the last known good configuration.

Are you able to restore back to a point to before you tried to install linux distro?

Ok well my computer when turned on gets to the screen that says

"windows closed unexpectedly"..etc and gives the options of

"safe mode"
"safe mode with netwroking"
"safe mode with command prompt"
"start windows normally"
"start windows with most recent working config" (or something similar)

Im sure most of you are familiar with this screen, when any of the options is selected
the computer begins to start up but then makes a struggling noise and returns to that screen
we can get past it.

If someone could help me out with this it would be greatly appreciated.

I tried to reset my laptop and now when I try to set it up, I cant get past the "Hi there" settings screen that asks for country, language, keyboard layout, and time zone. I hit next and then use express settings and the computer gives me the spinning white dots and then reboots back to the blue "Hi there" screen. I can get into BIOS and have a recovery drive plugged in to the laptop, but nothing seems to work. The computer can't find the drive, or my admin password is incorrect, or something else goes wrong. This is very frustrating as I haven't been able to use the laptop for a few days now.

Answer:Dell laptop cannot get past "Hi There" settings screen

Can you log in to safe mode then try sfc /scannow from an admin command prompt. Its possible you have a corrupt user profile. You could create a new account and see if that fixes the problem. Do you have backup you can recover from? If not, you could try a repair install.

Hi Emilie2011,
Welcome to the Community, it could be an issue with the harddrive. I suggest you can start by running the Hardware diagnostics.
To run diagnostics press and hold down the "Fn" key (on the lower left hand bottom of the keyboard)  and turn on the system,it should ideally bring up screen showing Pre-Boot System Assessment.
Another way to run the diagnostics go to F12 screen, scroll down using the "up" and "down" arrow key, choose diagnostics  and press Enter.
If the diagnostics shows any error code/message please post it back.
Since your system is getting stuck on black screen with blinking cursor, you can also try to release flea power.
To release flea power disconnect the charger and remove the battery, press and hold down the power button for 30 seconds, reconnect the battery and charger.Turn on the system and see if it boots to Windows.
Hope this helps,
Thank You

And here's what happened after i rebooted it, It comes up with two options
1. Start Startup Repair(Recommended)
2. Start Windows Normally

-I go to "Start windows Normally" and it goes to boot up normally, but then after the Windows 7 logo appears it just stays there and nothing happens
-I go Launch Startup Repair and it says loading files, but then it goes to a black screen with the logo © Micosoft Corporation and nothing happens

-I tried F8 advanced boot but it doesnt do anything
-I tried safe mode with networking, it says loading files and please waitt but even after 10 mins it just stays the same
-I dont have win 7 CD
Please assist me if you can I am in dire need.

I think I would run memory and hard drive diagnostics. Maybe included in your BIOS (Setup) or Recovery partition or set of Recovery DVDs tools. Memtest86+ is a popular test. The hard drive manufacturer usually has the best diagnostics for it.

On an admin account, if I want to, say, download/install a program, UAC will ask for confirmation, and clicking " yes " will get it to start downloading.

I wonder if I can make the system asking for password instead of giving the option of " yes " or " continue ". Like it does to a standard user account.

Thank you.

Answer:Password required instead of clicking " yes ' ot " continue "

You should enable the policy "User Account Control: Use Admin Approval Mode for the built-in Administrator account", and then you must configure the policy "User Account Control: Behavior of the elevation prompt for administrators in Admin Approval Mode" to use either "Prompt for credentials" or "Prompt for credentials on the secure desktop". Note the behavior of this last item depends on how you've configured "User Account Control: Allow UIAccess applications to prompt for elevation without using the secure desktop" or "User Account Control: Switch to the secure desktop when prompting for elevation" - I personally don't like using the secure desktop with a multimon setup, so I disable "User Account Control: Switch to the secure desktop when prompting for elevation" on my machines. All of these policies are in GPEdit > Computer Configuration > Windows Settings > Security Settings > Local Policies > Security Options. If you're using a version of Win7 without a local policy editor (your specs say Win7 HP, so it's possible) all of these settings are backed by registry values, documented on Technet here.

My work laptop has picked up this virus/malware. What it does is blocks your desktop and all programs with a white screen, and if you are connected to the internet it brings up a bogus FBI warning that says you have to pay a fine. Task Manager is unavailable. I cannot remove it because I cannot get to the BIOS without an admin password, nor can I boot in safe mode w/o this. I do not want to give it to the I.T. of my work place because they will probably just wipe the drive and re-install the programs of my work place. I hate to have that happen because I have installed on this computer several programs I need for my work, and if the drive gets wiped I'll have to spend hours hunting down these programs again and re-installing them. Is there some way around the "admin rights" stuff so that I can run Kaspersky's WindowsUnlocker and be done with it?

Answer:"White Screen", "FBI Warning" Malware!

Really, you should just take it to your IT department to let them deal with it so you don't make it worse.

I work in a corporate IT environment right now, and much prefer a user come to us before they tried to fix it on their own..

Yes, you'll most likely get the drive wiped, however you can tell them to back up your data for you, and possibly even reinstall those programs that you need; especially if its for work, they should have the licenses and/or installers for the software.

In another very old thread that I could not add to, one writer suggested removing the battery and running the laptop off the charger.
So I removed the battery. The charger was already connected to 120VAC so I plugged the connector into the laptop with the battery removed.
The screen flashed for one blip and went dark. So I pulled out the connector from the laptop. Screen flashed for one  blip and went dark.
Repeated with same results.
Then it dawned on me that the laptop was only seeing power just before the connector reached its end of travel. So I inserted the plug into the laptop and pulled it back out about 1/16".
Problem solved. Power supply was good. Battery was good. But mating between connector plug and socket was not connecting at end of travel. Pulling the plug gently out of the laptop just a fraction of an inch did the trick and I am back in action.

To whom it may concern,
I would like to set my default to my Bluetooth headset for meetings.  FYI-I currently have a microphone issue and it doesn't work.   I am thinking if I can default to my Bluetooth, then I can by pass the laptop's microphone issue and still have meetings via webex or Google hangouts for example.
I am able to "connect" the computer and LG HBS760 successful.
However, can't seem to tell the computer to recognize the blue tooth as it sends the sound the computer fine (not the Bluetooth), however, the audience cannot hear me talk back because of the microphone issue.  Hence... trying to swap the default sound to the Bluetooth.
My Troubleshooting steps...
1) I went to control panel, then "Sound", then "Playback" ... and nothing was listed.  According to the LG Bluetooth help... it said I should see several things displayed, included a "Bluetooth Headset" option... then I should be able to click it as the "default device".
Please advise me :)

Answer:my Dell Latitude EE6530 - I would like to set my "Sound" "default" to my Bluetooth headset for meetings

DaveSteph11 I went to control panel, then "Sound", then "Playback" ... and nothing was listed.  According to the LG Bluetooth help... it said I should see several things displayed, included a "Bluetooth Headset" option... then I should be able to click it as the "default device".
Hello. Even though a headset seems like a single device, to Windows it is 2 separate devices: a playback device (headphones), and a recording device (microphone). So for the mic to become active, you have to go to the Recording tab and make the Bluetooth device the default.
DaveSteph11I am able to "connect" the computer and LG HBS760 successful.
But if you do not see your Bluetooth microphone in the list of recording devices, then the headset still is not paired or connected correctly. That is a radio issue outside my area which is audio, so someone else will have to help with that.
When you reply back you should say which variety of Windows is on the laptop. Dell supplies Bluetooth drivers for every Windows from XP through 8 on the Latitude E6530, so if 8.1 or 10 is your operating system it could be the cause of some issues.

A week away because of log in problems (Which Continue) and I really needed you guys!!!!
Acquired a replacement charger board for an Inspiron 1545 from e-bay. Fitted no problem and the laptop works although the batter icon in the system tray says "x% available plugged in not charging" where the "x" started at zero and slowly, so slowly increased ??) to over "90% Not Charging" at which point I removed the power lead to prove that it was in fact working on battery.
Tried from device manager to uninstall the battery drivers but when the lappy rebooted and reinstalled them - no difference.
Having loosely reassembled the laptop can anyone give me a clue? Is this a software, hardware driver issue or is it in fact the wrong charger board?

Answer:Dell Inspiron Charger Board - "Not Charging)?

By the way, forgot to mention, I also changed the battery because I actually have a scrap Inspiron 1525 as well.

This week I'm at my in-laws -- and doing routing maintenance on their computers and wireless network -- which includes thorough bumper to bumper scanning of their computers for a variety of things. While doing so with their relatively new Dell laptop I encountered the infamous and incredibly annoying Browser Helper [??] that Dell, in a deal with Google, is installing on new computers.

This "feature" is incredibly annoying when ultimately encountered during the loading of a legit web page. It takes what is presumed to be a mis-typed URL or one that doesn't resolve in the DNS (domain name server) -- including from embedded ad banners -- and instead of returning a standard DNS error, it redirects the browser to a Dell web page with Google search box and a host of click-through adverts. My ISP's home page (which I was using to get to my web mail) was triggering this before the web page could completely load -- as were some web pages on Newegg before that.

Took me a while to sort out what it was as Spybot S&D, Adaware and Hijack This didn't find it (at the least I didn't recognize it in the Hijack This log). Turns out it's not that difficult to get rid of -- but Dell/Google don't make it plainly obvious.

Here's the fix:

Close Internet Explorer (important!)
Fire up the Control Panel
Go to "Add or Remove Programs"
Look for one of these programs (they've used several different program names):

In Windows XP, fully updated, I have several folders full of mp3's and want to see the bit rate and duration. I right click on a column heading and select "Bit rate". I then click on "More..." so I can get to "Duration", and I select that one too.

But all the figures in the "Duration" column appear to be in "hours" and "minutes", so I see "00:04" or "00:03", but what I want is "minutes" and "seconds".

Any thoughts as to how to change this?

Hello All,
A friend of mine gave me a few computers- because his office was upgrading all of their systems-
I reformatted many of them and installed windows me (they are too slow to support xp), but I am having a problem with one.
Originally it had windows 2000 pro as the os( I didn't have the password to log-into the computer) So I ran fdisk, formatted the hard drive, then tried to install the new os but I keep getting the error message upon booting that "invalid system disk, remove then press any key to continue".
I thought the cd-rom was bad so I replaced it, I changed the boot sequence, used a floppy to boot, even got the hard drive manufacturer's utility program to prep the drive for the os but even that doesn't work.
Am I missing something?
Does the fact that I didn't have the password to enter the computer have anything to do with this?
I used this same method for installing me on all the other systems and they are fine, but this one is an issue.
Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Hi, I hope I'm not asking this for the millionth time here, as I tried a search but am afraid it all just confused me more.

I believe my problem is related to the Dell all-in-one printer I want to work with my Dell laptop. Recently, Windows updated and I now get this message again upon start up:

Microsoft .NET Framework Version 2.0 is required to continue.
This software is available for free download at
Microsoft Download Center

I cannot remember how I fixed it before, or if a general windows update fixed it, but it's doing it again now. I searched online and found this: Microsoft .Net Framework error message? - Microsoft Windows Vista Community Forums - Vistaheads and I followed the instructions only as far as opening up the Windows Features window, as I'm unsure what "Windows Communication Foundation HTTP Activation" and the other "non-HTTP" things are, and what will happen or not happen if I successfully turn either or both on in an attempt to get that above error message to go away...

So basically, I wanted to ask if there was an easy to understand answer somewhere as to how to fix the issue of that error message upon start up. I've uninstalled the printer and reinstalled, but I continue to get that message. I remember trying to look for the drivers online and only becoming more confused. :/

Just incredibly paranoid I'll change something on the computer and it won't start up, because I depend on this comput... Read more

(I'll tell you some background before I get to the issue in case there is something related)

I recently cleaned my computer case (took it all apart and vacuumed it out). When I plugged everything back in and tried to boot up, all of my BIOS settings had cleared and I had to re-enter/set them again. I found this odd, but maybe the CMOS battery is failing or dead. A few days later I realize my time is off by about 15 minutes (roughly, the amount of time the PC was unplugged as I was cleaning it). However, when I left click on the time in the bottom right, "Change date and time settings", select the Internet Time tab, and click on Change Settings, I get the following error:

Unable to Continue
You do not have permission to perform this task.
Please contact your computer administrator for help.

Unfortunately, I have the only account on this machine, I am the admin, and this is not a domain machine (it's a home PC). I have no clue how or why this error has come about but it's rather annoying. I went into my BIOS and manually set the time to make it accurate and hopefully fix the issue but I still get the error. To further complicate things, when I look in the list of Services, there is no Windows Time service. When I run "w32tm /config /update" from an elevated command prompt, I get the error "The specified service does not exist as an installed service."

I ran an SFC /scannow check and it found/repaired a corrupt file (mfds.dll) but that doesn'... Read more

I've just about completed the migration of my XP programs to my new Windows 7 x64 installation. All my programs work (astronomy related) except for one - MaxPoint by Diffraction Limited. The program installs correctly (no errors), but when I run it for the first time, I get a "Registry area appears locked. Cannot continue." error.

I've tried everything I could think of - running the program as an Administrator, setting the Compatibility to XP (SP2 and SP3), copying over the "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Diffraction Limited\MaxPoint" key from the XP install, but nothing works. I thought that it may be Kaspersky Internet Security 2009 that might be causing the problem, but after uninstalling KIS and then installing MaxPoint, I get the same error

This is my only program that won't run under Windows 7. Of course, the support organization for MaxPoint says that they have no problems installing and running MaxPoint on their Win7 x86 and x64 installations Does anyone have any idea as to what I can do next? I really don't want to keep XP around, since my other programs run perfectly under Windows 7.

Answer:"Registry area appears locked. Cannot continue" error

Try running it in compatibilty with vista, select run as an administrator also - since the fix is for vista maybe it will work with those settings (I read you have already used administrator and xp, but who knows, also did you try just administrator?):
When I run MaxPoint in Windows Vista, I get the error "Vista - Registry appears locked...". How do I fix this?

I tried formatting my hard drive using the provided software from the company I bought the computer from, but it did not install correctly. Now there is no Windows or any files of Windows showing up on my hard drive whatsoever.

Whenever I pop in the Windows CD to try and repair or re-install, I get an error that states "Disk Boot Sector is to be modified! Press Y to continue, any key to abort" and once I do, it seems like the Windows options are about to come up, but then it just shuts down my computer. Any thoughts or possible fixes? I'm not sure of the correct location for this thread so I put it here. Thanks in advance!

Answer:ERROR: "Disk Boot Sector is to be modified! Press Y to continue" then crash?

I'd try a bootable hard drive diagnostic that's available from the support website of the manufacturer of your hard drive. That'll let you know if the hard drive is failing and we can move on from there.

I've been trying to repair install Windows 7 (SP1) and every time I get to the second step (Gathering files, settings, and programs) it cancels itself and displays this message:

When I click OK, it brings me back to the desktop. When prompted, I do opt to install updates and it takes about a second then jumps to the next step. I do not think it is downloading anything in that time. I do not have any CMD access, I get 0xc0000142 when I try to open CMD. What should I do to fix this? If it helps, I have an XP install dual booted with this install.

Answer:"Setup can't continue." Windows 7 Repair Install

Have you installed all of the important and optional Windows Updates? It may require several reboots after which you Check for Updates until there are no more.

Is this by any chance the original HP factory preinstalled Win7 which is the worst possible install one can have of Win7, larded with bloatware and useless duplicate utilties which interfere with better versions built into Win7? If so I would strongly consider a Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7 .

If you want to keep expiring XP on the drive, post back a screenshot of Disk Mgmt so we can better advise you on which partitions to keep. Meanwhile try rebooting while tapping the ESC key to see if HP onboard diagnostics will boot and run from the F9 boot menu.

How can I skip the Windows 10 menu that appears on restart, e.g. choose "continue to Windows" as a default, as was possible on Win 7 black screens?

I realize that if I reboot with ctrl-alt-del the blue menu does not appear, but I need the computer to fully restart after a system crash, especially when remote access is required.

Any ideas, please?

Answer:Menu option on restart, how can I "continue" automatically?

A reboot is a reboot. When you click on the Shutdown/Sleep/Restart button in Start, it should give you the option, unless you have made changes to it or using a third party utility to change the behavior of the start/all programs.

Russ Mullin here,

Hello there:

This is what I'm trying to do in my HP Desktop running Windows Vista Home Premium..this desktop needs a a wireless adapter to access the router I have set up 30 feet away. When I insert the Setup CD to install the software to use my Belkin Wireless Adapter I get the message Sorry! Please Run as when I try to access the Administrator from the cmd prompt in the start window---then right click on the cmd prompt in Program/Run as Administrator I get the following Window with this message:

User Account Control
[Shield icon] windows needs your permission to continue
If you started this action, continue
[CMD icon] Windows Command Processor
Microsoft Windows
To continue, type an administrative password, then click OK

or is there an alternative fix that will allow me to install these drivers etc that will allow me to complete the install thereby activating the new Belkin Wireless adapter?

Russ Mullin

Answer:"To continue type an administrative password then click Ok"

Since it's basically trying to set up wireless I'd ask the mod to move the post into networking and sharing.
More chance people there have had your problem and worked around it/solved it.

I am running Windows XP SP3, fully updated, on an Acer lap top PC.

I have several folders full of .mp3's and want to see the bit rate and duration. To do this I right click on a column heading and select "Bit rate". I then click on "More..." so I can get to "Duration", and I select that one too.

The two new columns appear, but the format of the "Duration" column appears to be "hours:minutes", so I see "00:04" or "00:03" for most .mp3's, when what I want to see is 'hours:minutes:seconds", e.g. "00:03:45".

This also happens for video files (.avi files), e.g. all my episodes of "Heroes" (sad, I know) have a duration of "00:42" instead of "00:42:xx".

Here are two pictures showing the problem with the .mp3's. The first is of Explorer showing the Duration as "Hours:Minutes":

The second picture is of the properties window of the first .mp3 in the list above:

I copied some .mp3 files to another (old) PC on my home network, and it displayed the duration field correctly:

Also, the properties window correctly shows the duration also:

I have a Dell GX260 low body and a regular GX260 desktop system, when they boot up, they will display "press F1 to continue or F2 to enter setup". I know this means that it is not reconizing in one form or another the HD. But, what I do not understand, the HD is reconized in BIOS. I have even installed a new HD with the same situation. At other times, system will boot into XP Pro and work fine until a restart, then it goes back to the F1 or F2 thing. We build several computers each week installing the OS XP Pro. We have taken all the parts out of the computers and reseated them. We have even went as far as to switch some parts out of another identical pc. I have even had a Dell Dimension E310 do the same thing. When we contacted Dell, they said it is the MB. What was even stranger was the one that had been sitting the longest, I tossed the original HD back into to see if I could check the name of the computer, it booted into Windows perfectly. I do not see how the motherboard could work now and not later and then start working again.

This is starting to be a really big issue and taking way to much of our time. If anyone can shed any light on this, I would appreciate it.

Answer:PC comes up "press F1 to continue or F2 to enter setup"

It is in fact the motherboard. I have had this happen many times with the same model you are talking about. It is a problem with the IDE controller on the motherboard. So thats why you need to replace the motherboard.

I am not sure if a PCI IDE controller would work if you cant replace the motherboard but it might be worth a shot. I always just replace the motherboard.

I have an old Dell Latitude C610 Laptop, Pentium III, that I got from a friend who's son got some wicked virus on it and the computer was pretty much useless. It would boot and load windows but once it finished loading, it would freeze, wouldn't let me run a virus scan, nothing.

To make a long story short, I used a utility on my 'Ultimate Boot CD" to wipe the drive clean. Oh, my friend didn't have the restore disk either. Now I get this message "No boot sector on hard disk - No bootable devices - strike F1 to retry boot, F2 for setup utility" I have a Windows XP disk that I tried using to reinstall the OS but kept getting the same message. I set the bios so the CD Rom would boot first, did no good. My UBCD boots just fine so, it is not a bad HD. The laptop doesn't have a floppy drive either so, I can't make boot floppies.

Answer:"No bootable devices strike F1 to retry boot, F2 for setup utility"

did you buy any chance remove the drive from the laptop at all... ?

the c610 has a little blade adaptor that changes the standard IDE pins into a flat set of pins, they sometimes dont sit right or the drive isnt snugly in the drive bay....

take it out and reinsert it,,on boot up go into the BIOS (F2 at boot) and check the drive shows, if it doesnt then the drive has died and needs to be replaced.

Anyone with a fix? . My appreciations in advance!

Answer:"User Accounts" in Control panel wont Open-Error is "Html application Host Error"

Do you have a recovery restore install disc or partition?
You can try doing a repair or system file check...
Scan For Missing/Corrupt System Files...

Windows XP comes with a wonderful tool called System File Checker (SFC)
Itscans and verifies the versions of all protected system files after you restart your computer...
To Do This:
Click Start menu, and then click the Run icon.
In the small box that Opens, type the three letters: cmd then click the OK button.
In the command prompt window that just opened (a black background and white text), type the following command:
SFC /scannow
And then click OK
You must be logged on as a member of the Administrators group to run SFC..
You will need your Windows XP CD during this procedure if SFC needs to get an original file. Please remember that Windows XP can have multiple instances of a .DLL file and remember which version is for which program.
I have been asked if it is possible to have a "progress meter" show when SFC runs... This is the registry hack you need. PLEASE do not go messing with your registry if you do NOT know what you are doing!
System Key: [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon]
Value Name: SFCShowProgress
Data Type: REG_DWORD (DWORD Value)
Value Data: (0 = disabled, 1 = enabled)

Uhm, hey, i'm not sure if this is an easy problem to fix or not, but when i play CSS i get this message from my monitor that the Frequency is out of range.

I use to be able to play this all the time, until i uninstalled and then re-installed.

I've updated my Video Card, and got the driver for it.

I'm running it on Vista, but that was never a problem.

If you need to do a full explanation my MSN is [email protected] and my SN for AIM is Bera FTW.

Please help me.

Answer:Counter Strike Source "Frequency Out of Range"

it could be that the refresh rate is exceeding what the monitor can handle. go into the display properties and knock down the refresh rate to 60 Hz. That should get rid of the message on your monitor. Also make sure you have the latest drivers installed for the vid card

I've been having this problem lately where whenever I move I get some sort of FPS lag or something and I suddenly warp back a few inches in the game. It really makes the game play unbearable. What's even weirder is that the in-game footsteps seem to match this, like I have a third leg or something. I tried turning down the visual setting but that only makes it worse. HL2 and HL2: DM work fine so I am wondering what is up. Does anyone have any ideas to solve this?

It started when I was playing Overwatch then for some reason the screen completely froze. I wait for around a minute and then when I held down the power button to turn it off, a second before it turned off it showed blue screen saying error occured. Since that time my Pc have been running diagnostic, scanning, repairing but it always ended up in some extremely long black screen thats lasts hours so I turn it off. Then the next day when I turn on my pc it says "No bootable device" and under it "Strike F1 to retry boot, F2 for setup utility." I tried clicking F1 and it doesn't work, I get lead back to the same screen. I read somewhere to try doing ALT+TAB with E,F,B with Num Lock, Cap Lock, and Scroll Lock on but I just get a black screen.
My PC is Alienware x51 R2. I've had it for around 4 years now and all the specs of the PC is default. I am running Windows 10.

System specs can be seen on the tip ^ What isn't in there:

Windows XP Pro SP3

I formatted a while ago when I got my new computer, installed all the drivers, everything ran fine, then I had to switch HD's (my stepdad was getting rid of his better ones) so I backed up, reinstalled again on the new drives (with the exact same drivers; I keep all my installation files I've ever used) and counterstrike (herein cs/1.6) ran fine.

Then one day several months down the road I went to play cs and everything I did had a horrid delay to it. Imagine a wireless mouses' delay (about 0.1~ second) and times that by about 5~8. I move my mouse, and then my crosshairs move, I press W to run forward, and then he runs. It is literally unplayable, there's about a 0.5~1 second delay on everything I do. Even in the in-game menus, if I type out "aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa" and HIGHLIGHT it with the mouse, I can SEE the trail of text I highlighted lagging behind the mouses position (although the mouse pointer in the options doesn't have the lag problem, it responds accordingly).

So I troubleshoot, try newer/older video card drivers (the only ones I can find are the stock drivers from nVidia's website....I used to have this problem on my old ATI card using the "Omega" drivers, but switched to the Catalyst and the problem search for alternate nVidia drivers still continues to this day), newer/older motherboard drivers, defrag, CPU core af... Something odd is occurring on a new XP Pro computer ( 3 days old). I can be working on or offline and in the middle of my typing a blue screen appears with a image in the center of the word "Enter". and a message appears "Hit Enter to Continue". When I press the enter key ( I can't click on the enter image), a pop-up ad appears momentarily and then the ad disappears and my whatever I was working on reappears.

I have an up-to-date Norton AV running. A full scan found no viruses.

Has anyone heard of this? Is it a virus or is it something that redirects my work?

Answer:IS "Hit enter to Continue" a virus?

Is it a box like the example in this link?
If it is then follow the instructions to disable windows messenger service.
If not, then go to download HijackThis, and post log results on here, (don't fix anything yet!) and someone should be able to help you with the results on the forum.

Hello, I'm writing a batch script on windows, where i'm performing the following:call abc.execall def.exeAfter it runs the abc.exe, i get a message "Press any key to continue", and only after the key is pressed, it executes the def.exe.How do i get rid of the "Press any key to continue" after abc.exe?Regards,Milind

Answer:How do i get rid of the "Press any key to continue..." on Windows 7

The "Press any key to continue" message is generated by a pause statement in batch. You don't have one, so I'm thinking the abc program is putting out the message. You might try piping a key into the abc program:Code: [Select]echo. | abc
No guarantees, but stranger things have worked!FWIW: call is used to tranfer control to other batch files with the expectation of returning to the original batch file (the caller). It's not necessary when running exe files.

Hey folks,

I seemed to have downloaded a whole medley of malware. The problem started with a system window which kept popping up, along with a slow computer and a disabled wireless connection. The system window said the following:

Critical System Warning!
Your system is probably infected with the lastest version of Spyware.Cyberlog-X.
Type: Spyware
Infected Length: 266,129 bytes
Risk: High
Affected Systems: Windows 95, 98, 2000, NT, 2000 Server, Windows XP
Behavior: Cyberlog-X is a spyware program that monitors user activity, logs keystrokes, and track Web sites visited.
Symptims: Low Internet connection speed
Low System Performance
Secyrity center alerts
Strange pop up windows
Protection: Click OK to download antispyware software

Additionally, there were two or three other unique balloon-style warnings that would pop up out of the system tray. Can't recall what they said.

I followed the malware removal instructions on this site, and each step seemed to find a whole bunch of problems. While the symptoms are no longer present, I want to be sure that I caught everything. Would someone mind taking a look at my log files to make sure?

Thanks in advance, I'm very grateful for the help!

When I open an old (2003) Exel-file with VBA-code in it with Excel 2007, I get one of these two responses
and I do not know what causes Excel to make different choices
A Dialog Box: "Microsoft Excel Security Notce"
This one is very similar to the one in Excel 2003 and that is how I want Excel to behave.
The user has to “Enable Macros” to go on and work with the file.

"Security Warning"
This one is new in 2007 and the user can continue to work with the file even if he does not see the security warning.
That means that VBA-code that I (the programmer) want to run when the file is opened, does not execute.

My problem is that I do not know what causes the two different behaviors and cannot force Excel to open files with the first Dialog box.
Can you?

Answer:Solved: Excel "Security Notice" vs "Security Warning"

I think most of the info will be in the dailog screen, i'sn't there's more text in the dialog box than the text you mentioned?

I think if you read through it it'll become clear.

It has all to do with the improved Security settings with 2007 and up

Has anyone else seen this problem?

Maybe your laptop has its power settings set to - Shut Down when Lid is Closed (when on battery power).

1. It reads 99% available (Plugged in, not charging).
2. HP Battery Care Adviser tells me that the battery needs replacing.
3. Battery was losing a charge (Plugged in, not charging) whilst on the HP dock. I transferred it to the charge on the computer itself and it charged up to 99%. The dock still reads my peripherals (external hard drives) just fine.
4. I don't need portability with my notebook. The reason I have it is because I typically spend nine months of the year in one country and three months in another. Otherwise, I'd simply use a desktop. So, I've only used the battery without the charger in a handful of times.
5. Notebook is only eleven months old. I have no other problems.
6. I run Vista 32bit SP1
7. I read online that a BIOS flash may solve the problem. I'm not too keen on a BIOS flash; but I checked just to make sure, and yes, HP released a new BIOS 7-2009. My own is, of course, a year old.

1. notebook runs fine; if it ain't broke don't fix it.
2. This computer is like the Berlin wall of my life. If this goes, the whole thing goes; so I tend to be paranoid.

What do you think? Do I get a new battery? Do I just be fastidious about backups and not worry about it? Your thoughts appreciated.

Thank you.

Answer:Laptop Charger reads "Plugged in, not charging"

If you don't use it on battery then I would say no need to replace it - its not required for the proper operating of the computer. It does provide one nice feature, if the power goes out then you can keep running the laptop and not have it power off on you and lose your data. However being less then a year old I would be contacting HP and complaining, a battery should last more then that. If HP advises a BIOS update when you talk to them then I would do it, if it breaks its their fault, but it doesn't affect the data on the drive which if you care about then you'll already have it backed up to at least one other location.

My office just upgraded, and I can no longer use Windows XP. On this system, I was able to add a separate taskbar to facilitate quick access to commonly-browsed folder locations on our vast network, and another one expedited the launching of useful programs and lists. Each task on each taskbar was represented with a big custom icon to save eye strain. I had them installed in opposite vertical margins, and they were set on auto-hide to keep them out of the way when not being used. Just move your mouse pointer to the left or right margin, and BAM! Sorry for the cliche, but I really got used to the convenience of what I had set up, and I just don't think I can be as efficient without anything comparable.

Now there appears to be nothing comparable in the Windows 7 GUI, and it's making me sick with rage! I see only the option to put a "toolbar" on an existing "taskbar", and no option to create any additional taskbars! This cramps up your one-and-only taskbar, plus the tiny toolbar access buttons require way too much precision for anything that's supposed to be quick. When you've figured out how to bring up that ridiculous button, the list that it yields is small enough to cause painful eyestrain - nothing efficient, much less cool about this at all! I have seen customization options in other OS GUIs that may have resolved some of these issues, but I see none such in W7.

I have tried every google search string that I can think of, and found... Read more

Firstly, I am a novice to computer problems, but I would appreciate advice on this one please. Recently, I followed a video replacement of a fan and successfully accomplished this on my own Pavilion laptop. This has raised my interest in an old problem, it's this, I have an old HP Presario CQ61 which was damaged by a replacement charger putting the full voltage through the machine, resulting in smoke coming from it and the machine not firing up at all. I happily got full compensation for the laptop and was also told that to repair it would be uneconomical. Obviously labour charges would explain this, but, my question is how much damage to the laptop would there really be and what items would be required to effect a possible repair myself. A family member in IT reckons that it should have a high-voltage cut-out system. I assume that a new motherboard would be in order, but what else? Any ideas please?

Answer:Faulty charger "fried" my laptop.

It is impossible to say with any accuracy what damage may have occurred. It has probably fried the voltage regulation circuitry and maybe gone on to fry some of the components on the motherboard. I doubt that it would be sensible to try and fit a new motherboard even if you could source one. Trouble is that, if you replace the motherboard you might then find the memory chips have fried. It could be a never ending situation with more and more money being spent on what you say is an old laptop anyway. Bite the bullet and take it to the dump.

I have a E7440 and I can reliably "lock up" the laptop by plugging in the charger.
I say "lock up" because the mouse and keyboard are unresponsive. However, I can get it work again if I use Fn+F1 to put the laptop to sleep and then hit the power button to wake it up.
It also seems that keystrokes entered while the unit was "locked up" were actually just queued up, and then after I wake up the computer they are acted on.
it seems that this posting kinda describes the problem I am having, except that removing the charger does not bring the computer back to life: (E7440 freezes with charger attached)
To summarize here is the scenario in which the laptop "locks up":

Start with the charger plugged in and running Windows 10
Disconnect charger cable from laptop
Re-connect charger to laptop
Laptop "locks up"
Unplugging the cable again does not unfreeze the laptop.

The same thing happens if I unplug and replug the charger from the wall outlet.

Is there any setting to tweak , which will display all the 3 options for HTML attachments as well?

As you know, the Open-Save-Cancel dialog box helps you prevent your computer from affecting by virus while downloading.
So I suggest you test to reset all zones to a lower level temporarily and then please attempt to download this html attachment again.

However, since you can normally download the other documents, I suspect there is some restriction in the website which you are trying to view. I recommend you to contact the administrator of that website if possible.

Hi guys!

So i tried installing windows 7 Home Premium using an empty HDD. The old OS was Vista, and it was located in the same HDD. I managed to install Windows 7 successfully, but when booting after the install it crashed right after the "starting windows" screen. It then gives me the choise between starting the startup repair tool, or to start windows normally. When i run the startup repair tool it can not fix the problem. I've tried different HDD but the problem still persists. The fact that I haven't got a clue what to do really annoys me. In addition it isn't even my own pc. My dad's vista started failing on him. My machine was working fine. I had been on it for a couple hours just doing regular internet browsing. I tried to open a program (EverQuest 2) and it would open then immediately crash "EverQuest 2 has encountered an error". So I figured, reboot the machine. After the POST, it tells me to either launch start up repair or start normally. I chose start normally. It would go to the "starting windows" screen and the logo will not show up. it just stays there.

Powered down, and after the POST got the same options again. I picked start up repair this time. It would load the bar and show "loading windows files" or whatnot and when the bar would get completely full, it would freeze there.

My computer doesnt have a CD/DVD drive, I installed Windows 7 from USB. So I plugged the USB drive back into the computer and tried booting from that. It would go thru the "loading windows files" just fine, I can see the drive flashing as its being accessed. When the bar filled up, it would progress to "Starting Windows" screen, and stop blinking and just sit there... doing nothing. Tried using Safe Mode. Wouldn't load either.

I have not a clue what I should be looking for to even start getting it working again. The only physical change I've made to the system was plugging in another monitor to my graphic card. And even then, I've shut down and rebooted and it's been just fine.

(Right clicking on the tray icon and closing "close" does nothing. I have downloaded and used the DNS 12 uninstall "tool" several times and re-downloaded and installed the program, but the same thing happens, the program's "Loading" box appears but gets "stuck" there. The only thing I can think that is happening is that the computer is trying to boot from an external hard drive that is in a "locked/password protected" mode on my system.  I have no idea how to bypass this.  I've tried unhooking the drive and rebooting and then it just goes back to black screen with a cursor.
Can anyone help me?  Please?

Hi DEAR64,
Thank you for writing to Dell Community Forum.
Please check if you can boot into safe mode <F8>.
Do you have the OEM Operating system DVD?

Hello all,

I have a Compac desktop, it's relatively new as far as use. Recently, it's not been used because of a startup issue. It will load the first screen (The compac screen and act like it's it going to load up) but then loops back to the first screen and continue to do this over and over. My mother told me that the computer had fallen off of out computer hutch (About 2 inches off the ground) and heard an interesting noise inside. She described the sound like a CD hitting the floor, but I looked inside the desktop, and nothing seemed to be out of place.
I want to get the data files and documents, but as stated above, I cannot use the computer.
I have a Ubuntu CD already made, and have used it before.. Unfortunately, the CD drive doesn't seem to be recognizing the disc. I can see the little white blinking "-", but that is all I can get to come up before the screen goes into another loop; and the previous process.
I was hoping some one could possibly help me out in getting the computer to the point to save the data? I have the option to reformat the whole computer, but I'd rather save that for last measures if the data cannot be recovered.
Again, the computer is a compac, Windows XP OS, desktop - only about 3 years old.

Answer:Computer will not boot past the "Compac" startup screen.
