Desktop Icons web site based stopped working while PC based

Question: Desktop Icons web site based stopped working while PC based

Create Icon on desktop to open a websiteYa, I?ve done that for ever and it works great. But today I was on a chat with Norton support he was on my pc remotely trying to fix a LAN Proxy problem. He uninstalled several problem malware programs and installed some other programs including Google Chrome. After he was off the system I was checking around my HP Laptop and noticed the the Desktop Icons with Apps on the PC worked but all the web based icons did not work anymore. I did the procedure like I had many times before from a web site but the Icon just will not work at all. The error I get on all of them is when I click on the icon to open itIs Application Not Found.I?ve never seen this one before but I?ll keep trying to find the solution unless one of you gentlemen have a answer for me, I do plan on uninstalling Google Chrome and testing the icons again to see if that might have something to do with it?Thanks.Rod [email protected]

Preferred Solution: Desktop Icons web site based stopped working while PC based

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hello,

I'm not sure if this is the best forum for this - if not, please let me know.

I have a hosted web site that offers FTP access for users.
It's not the simplest process for users to use, and I'd like to make it simpler, but am not sure where to begin.
I'm hoping to create a web based FTP site, where users must log in, and they have the ability to upload, download, and create directories.
I haven't been able to find any suggestions/directions through searching.
Can someone point me in the right direction??

Thanks
Amber

Hi all,

I’m new to this forum and made this account just to ask one question.

Please enlighten me that what could be the reason if a particular website is showing you pop-up ads?

I’ll add some detail here. Actually we, at our office are using a web-based software. Since some days it has started showing ads during working. These ads appear on screen all of a sudden while working on some form or report and then we have to click BACK button to return to the page we were working on. There is no specific pattern of time and these ads appear with varied time-space. I asked the software providers that please assist regarding the cause and solution of this problem but they said that the site is working fine on their end over there. and that I should contact my IT Department and have them take a look at my pc as it looks like that I have malware on my computer.

I told them that I’m pretty sure that this problem has nothing to do with my computer because of the following reasons:

1) These ads appear only on that particular software's website and none of the other website is showing these pop-up ads while browsing.
2) These ads appear on that software's website while working on all the computers from all the login ids.

They replied that:

“We have done some further testing and are still not seeing the images on your site. There are three probable causes for this behavior. The first possibility is malware (you have mentioned that this does not seem likely), the seco... Read more

Answer:Pop-up Ads on a particular web-based software's site

A couple of questions to point you in the right direction
1. Does this only happen to your computer or are other computers in the office affected as well?
2. What web based software is it?

Bear in mind this
IMPORTANT NOTE REGARDING CORPORATE/COMPANY OWNED COMPUTERS

Please do not request assistance for corporate/company owned computers. Many changes/deletions are made during the clean up process, some of which may involve uninstalling programs, deleting folders/files, changing settings and/or removing policies etc. As we have no way of knowing for sure if these are actually needed for company operations, malware issues in these cases should be handled by your own IT Departments in order to avoid any undesirable results.

I download a file frequently http://build.chromium.org/f/chromium/snapshots/chromium-rel-xp/XXXXX/chrome-win32.zip where XXXXX refers to the latest version available the latest version is available here http://build.chromium.org/f/chromium/snapshots/chromium-rel-xp/LATEST where the latest version is displayed is it possible to insert the latest version into the XXXXX in the first url ? I hope anyone reading can understand what I am trying to achieve

Answer:downloading a file based on another site

I'm afraid not - you can only guess at someone else's URL names and if you guess wrong, you won't get through.

You might try suggesting to the Webmaster at that site that he or she may name the pages sequentially as updates go through but they light reply that there's no demand for it - except from you.

Does anyone know how I can download this video:
http://www.tsn.ca/hockey-canada/video/babcock-opens-up-about-matthews-marner-and-leafs-future~870947

TSN is a flash based site I think.  I tried using video captures like camtasia and fraps but the problem is whether I use 20fps 30 or 60fps, the recorded video plays back laggy/choppy.

Anyone have any other ideas?
Thanks

Answer:How to download video from TSN (flash based) site?

Use Firefox and this extension. If you do not want Firefox as an install you can download the portable version of Firefox.

So I opened my system monitor just for the heck of it this morning and when I did so I noticed I had the cnql1213.dnl power-pc based THING running on my intel-based mac. I see it is something called a Vundogrb. My question is can I just delete this or is there more that I need to do to successfully rid myself of it. I used to use Windows, in fact I still do sometimes for my laptop, but most of the time I used my Mac and so long since I really worried about this stuff that I'm not sure exactly what to do with it?Can you tell me something about this creepy intruder and how I need to deal with it?Thanks.

Hi, I'm currently running a Windows 10 Pro PC with a 32-bit architecture. My processor allows for a x64 upgrade, but my system's information shows that my PC is x86 based. Can I still upgrade? I also have 6.00 gigabytes of ram, definitely enough for an upgrade.

Thanks in advance!

Answer:x64-based processor, but x86-based PC; can I upgrade to x64 bit?

No you cannot upgrade a 32-bit system to a 64-bit one. You can however, clean install a 64-bit system instead of the 32-bit one.

Answer:Wndows 10 x86,x86 based PC but x64 based processor,can it go x64

It could be because of some driver or other HW but if processor is 64bit (and it is), 64bit OS should run on it without problems.

Hi, I want to assign a custom icon to every file type no matter what the associated app is. I can change individual default icons, but they get overwritten by the application icon. Is it possible to do this :

And if so, how ? (I want to keep the file associations: .css and .txt are still getting open by Sublime, .ini by WordPad and so on ...)

Thanks.

Answer:Change Icons based on extension only, not the associated application.

The following Microsoft Dev Centre page explains how this can be done via the Registry. (Note: I have not tested this myself in Windows 10)

My new Acer Vista laptop's icons have stopped working, except for my gmail icon, which is still working.
I use a mouse usually, but neither the mouse or the mouse pad can make an icon open (except the one already mentioned.)

Have read another thread similar problem to mine, but no luck so far.
Any help please? Would really appreciate someone responding.

Just bought a new computer about 6 weeks ago. Its been working great up until last night. I had a problem with my CA Security Suite not working and so I uninstalled it and reinstalled it. Did this about 10 times until finally got help from the CA company themselves. Well now almost every icon on my desktop and in my start menu (all programs) has stopped working. When I click on one of the icons it says one of the following things:

Problem with Shortcut
This action is only valid for products that are currently installed.

[OK]

----------
Problem with Shortcut

The parameter is incorrect.

[OK]
---------------------

I don't know what happened. I don't know if I should do a restore point or what. I don't have a recovery CD because Toshiba didn't tell me that it didn't come with the computer. Microsoft Office 2007 has completely stopped working and I am having to reinstall it. Skype, All MSOffice programs, Adobe, Online Games etc.. give me this error. Most of the programs still work if I go through there install folder and click on them.

MS Word gives me this message from install folder:
---------------------------
Microsoft Office Word 12.0
---------------------------
There is not enough memory or disk space to run Word.

I have 6gbs ram and a 500 HDD....

Any help would be great. I don't think I have a virus or anything but I will preform the Malware Scan's as in that forum.... Read more

Hello,
We're using Enterprise Mode to have some sites load correctly now that we've finally updated to IE11.  But we're having an issue testing sites trying to figure out if the page is loading correctly based on XML file.  I know if I chose IE7 or 8
Enterprise mode the icon on the address bar will change to two buildings (that's what it looks like to me).  But if I select IE5-11 document mode, the icon does not change.  How do I tell if browser is downloading the XML file and loading the page
to the mode set on XML if I choose document mode option, regardless of which version?  Also where does Windows cache the XML file locally?
Thank you,
John

Hello,

I try to connect to https://vpn.par01.softlayer.com web site with IE 11 and I always get the same following error message :

This page can?t be displayed
Turn on TLS 1.0, TLS 1.1, and TLS 1.2 in Advanced settings and try connecting to https://vpn.par01.softlayer.com  again. If this error persists, contact your site administrator.

By clicking on the "Change settings" button associated with this error message, the IE Advanced option tab is displayed :

from there, I can see that SSL 3.0 and all TLS versions are correctly checked ;

When I do the same test from a colleague's PC with the same Windows 7 version and exactly the same IE 11 version,  there is not problem to reach this web page

When comparing Wireshark traces taken on both PC, I can see the following differences in the SSL CLient Hello packet sent by IE :

1) in the good case,  this Client hello includes 26 Cipher Suites, with TLS 1.2

2) in the bad case, this Client hello includes 24 Cipher Suites, with TLS 1.2

The 2 missing Cipher Suites in the bad case are the following ones :

Cipher Suite: TLS_RSA_WITH_RC4_128_SHA (0x0005)
Cipher Suite: TLS_RSA_WITH_RC4_128_MD5 (0x0004)

In the good case, the Server hello sent by the server (in response to the Client hello) shows the TLS_RSA_WITH_RC4_128_SHA Cipher Suite is the one selected ;

In the bad case, the Client hello is answered by the server by a packet showing the following message :

Good Evening,

Earlier today my desktop icons stopped working. It happened without any warning or strange behavior from the rest of my computer. My Internet Explorer still worked and my programs still worked, but I had to access my computer programs through the start menu to get them opened.

The desktop icons did not give any error messages; they simply did not highlight and would not allow me to select them. Having no luck in searching out information about this issue in a general Google search, I came to your website to follow the instructions on how to check for malware.

I found further computer problems when I tried to follow the instructions under the heading: READ & RUN ME FIRST Malware Removal Guide (incl. spyware, virus, trojan, hijacker). When I got to Step 3: Configuration & Setup I was not able to complete the steps for How to view hidden, system files & folders because I could not select Folder Options.

Try as I might, the computer acted just like it had with the icons; I could not highlight or select Folder Options but I could select the other choices under the Appearance and Personalization heading. Moreover, IE began locking up the Major Geeks website. I had to keep opening a fresh IE window in order to get back the your instructions.

Then, all of a sudden, as quickly as it started...it ended. The computer simply began responding and all went back to normal. Despite my relief, I was nervous and decided to continue throu... Read more

Tonight I was working on a report when the Windows Update notification alert came up indicating there were updates to be downloaded and installed. I did this, and then rebooted the computer, as per the install instructions. After the start up, I discovered that none of my desktop shortcuts work anymore. If you right-click on them, you can't even find the target executable. The programs still work, but I now need to go through Windows Explorer and find them in the Program Files directory.Has anyone seen this before?

Hello Can an one sugest reasons for my problem. I will be to the point.  I wanted to create PDF files free. I was told download to Apache 3.4.1 open office. I clicked to download and it started to download   7-zip.It downloaded and opened it up but there was NO PDF creator programe only:  Intel apps, I Play web search, i-games, speed up free.   These icons came on my desktop.  I was NOT interested in them. It also obviuosly took over my home page (which was BBC.co.uk)  Also toolbar was added.None of which I seen the option to untick which would be usual.  So I deleted icons and went into control panel to add and remove and uninstalled only the 7-zip.It was fatal.  All my icons such as Internet explorer, firefox, Google Chrome just to name a few would not work, so I cannot get online to try to correct problems.  I am using my laptop at this time.  However that was NOT the end of it. On my desktop MY COMPUTER yellow folder was gone and replaced with an icon that had no name and very plain. There was 3 folder like that. When 2 never opened I deleted them and moved on.  I came back later and clicked the 3rd one and to my surprise it my computer folder, plain with no name.I went to control panel to restore and that had been change no option to choose any restore at all. Where did you go to download the Zip file containing Apache 3.4.1 open office?   If I go to http://www.openoffice.org/download/index.html and start a download, I see I would be downloading a .exe file, not a Zipped file.  So, where did you go to download? The problems you encountered after you downloaded and opened it seem to indicate a malware infestation.  Perhaps you should post in the Viruses and Spyware part of the forum.

Sun Microsystems has quietly released a version of its Java Desktop System software based on Solaris, a new step in the company's plan to try to transfer some of Linux's glory to its own operating system.

The Java Desktop System (JDS) consists of an operating system and higher-level software such as the GNOME user interface, the Mozilla Web browser, the StarOffice competitor to Microsoft Office, RealNetworks' media player--and of course Sun's Java software foundation. When JDS was introduced a year ago, it was based only on Novell's SuSE Linux.

Sun released JDS version 2, based on Solaris 9, last week. According to Sun's plans, version 3 is due by the end of the year, a version Sun says will be easier to use.

Under a promotional pricing plan that runs through December, the software can be downloaded for $50 per computer per year.

Linux sellers have rallied around the open-source operating system for servers for years, but more recently have used it in direct attacks against Microsoft's stronghold on desktop PCs.

Sun has begun touting its own Solaris version of the Unix operating system, chiefly by resurrecting and now heavily promoting a version that runs on computers with x86 chips such as Intel's Pentium. Sun is aiming Solaris chiefly at Red Hat Linux and plans to make the software an open-source product by the end of the year.

Just wondering if its possible to make multiple devices desktops look the same. For example if you change your desktop on your PC it could be made to automatically change on your other devices.

Hi. I am having a problem with net-based apps accessing the web. So far, here are the applications with which I am having trouble:

Avant Browser - will not load web pages (after 10 mins., only loaded 29% of Google.com)
Firefox - will not load web pages
MS Antispyware - will not update, stops responding, cannot shut down in Task Manager when this happens
SpywareBlaster - will not update, stops responding
Norton Firewall - stops responding when I try to add or remove programs, cannot shut down in Task Manager when this happens

One interesting note: IE works fine...

I tried uninstalling and reloading these apps, to no avail. With Firefox, I deleted profile and reinstalled, but it didn't help either. I ran spyware scans with MS Antispyware, Adware, and Spybot, and scanned with Norton Antivirus.

Also, when I try to shut down or restart, it seems to take forever.

Any clue what may be causing this to happen or how to fix it?

Thanks

Answer:Many net-based apps not working...

Rerun the program access wizard in NIS
Go launch NIS, choose settings , chooose firewall, choose configure.
Then on programs tab choose program scan.
If you have a network click network tab and run the network wizard.

If this does not solve it , I would suspect a virus or trojan which has entered a host file block.

I've been trying to experiment with Hex Editors lately. I've downloaded Hexposure and Hexpose, two of the best, apparantly. And neither of them work. When I try to run them, I get a blank command window, and then an error message. The title is "16 bit MS-Dos Subsystem", and it says "The NTVDM CPU has encountered an unhandled exception. Choose 'Close' to terminate the application. I'm running Windows XP, Version 2002. Anybody know what the problem could be?

Chromium-based browsers like Chrome, Comodo Dragon, Opera etc., are not working on my Desktop PC which is running on Windows 7. I don't know what is the problem with them. All other browsers (Non-Chromium) like Firefox, IE9, Seamonkey etc are working fine.
Problem in detail (taking Chrome as example):
* Browser opens normally.
* When I click on new tab button, a new tab will be opened but shows "Loading" for long time and then a message appears "Pages became unresponsive".
* Same thing happens when I click on Settings, Bookmarks, Downloads etc. It shows "Loading..." but doesn't load anything. I see only a blank page all the time.
I've searched Google forums for solution but there is no solution found.
Anyone here help me...!

Answer:All the Chromium-based are not working at all !!!

Hi Guys,

Have a real strange issue here...

I have an Asus X55A Laptop running windows 8 and my keyboard suddenly went crazy! It started adding random characters when typing or added spaces between each letter!

I was able to try a restart using ALT+F4 but it would then not let me type anything into my password box. I wasnt able to cursor over the on-screen keyboard function.

I eventually got logged on by using a USB keyboard and Mouse which work fine. Still getting spaces between letters when I type.

Even stranger...when I click on ANY desktop item it will simply vanish! I used msconfig to get a safe mode with networking boot. When I click on an icon then a dialog box saying 'Item Not Found' and then something about file transfer - try again or cancel. If I select cancel the icon will vanish.

Even selecting items in folders will disappear.

I am assuming this a virus and any help at all will be greatly, greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
ndonaldson2912

Zorin OS 5 has been released. This Linux distro is based on Ubuntu 11.04, but comes with plenty of changes and customizations to make it suitable to its intended audience, users new to Linux which may be turned off by an operating system that looks and feels very different from what they've been used to.

Zorin OS 5 Core and Zorin OS 5 Ultimate are now available, bringing updated packages as well as several new features and improvements, such as new themes and artwork.Click to expand...

Answer:Zorin OS 5 Is Based on Ubuntu, Uses the Classic Gnome Desktop

It looks more like the KDE desktop.
Considering that Ubuntu can have the standard Gnome shell applied to it, I would say that having a specific variant for it, especially since it may be delayed in being updated for each new version of Ubuntu, seems like a waste of time to me.

In recent years, High-DPI displays have become common. Having a lot more pixels to display your application on seems like a simple recipe for crisper graphics but, counterintuitively, the opposite is often the case. Many applications were written without taking the DPI of displays into account and are not able to natively render their contents on High-DPI displays. The visual elements (e.g., text, images, icons) of these applications will appear blurry.

GDI was for many years the de facto win32 2D API and is behind many of these older pre-high-DPI applications. GDI is used by applications to render graphics and formatted text on displays and printers. Beginning with the Creators Update for Windows, we have added a new feature, called GDI Scaling, that allows GDI to natively scale visual content on behalf of DPI unaware applications. Visual elements, especially text, can appear much sharper for these applications when this feature is enabled. This will give Desktop users and IT Pros a way to improve existing applications that are difficult or unpleasant to use because of blurry text and graphics.

In this article, we will describe the challenge presented by high DPI displays, show you several ways to configure GDI Scaling, discuss how GDI Scaling works and give instructions to developers on updating their apps to run with GDI Scaling. While consumers and IT professionals may find this discussion informative, the primary target for this article are developers wanting to unders... Read more

I have a brand new alienware desktop preinstalled with Windows 7 Ultimate, 64 bit. I am trying to create a multiboot system using XP as the additional OS for Flight Simulation. Yesterday, I formatted my second drive and tried to reinstall XP, Professional 64 bit numerous of times and got the BSOD. Would you please advise? Thank you

Answer:Unable To Install XP on Win 7 Based Alienware Auroura Desktop

and welcome to the Forum

Installing XP on a SATA drive requires an additional step:

http://xphelpandsupport.mvps.org/how...ws_xp_on_a.htm

However, Most newer BIOS allow an Alternate method for SATA . . Go into the bios and check the "Sata Operation" setting,

change it to "Raid Autodetect/ATA if it is not already. Now try to install XP ( could be IDE Mode, Compatibility Mode or Legacy Mode - different BIOS use different terms )

some will say IDE instead of ATA)

Since you want to dual boot, you cannot do this, you'll need to slipstream the sata drivers on the XP CD, follow the instructions in this guide :

Hey everyone. I had an account here a long time ago and got some great help, so now I hope that happens again.

Part of the problem is that my free email accounts don't work the way they should.

Hotmail gives me a message saying that it's 'working on your request' but never finishes. I have the program Ad Muncher installed and it used to be that if I disabled that, then Hotmail would work properly. It doesn't anymore. (Plus, half the time, the ads on Hotmail make my IE freeze. Oh, and Hotmail doesn't work at all with Firefox.)

Yahoo doesn't let me open my messages (and on the new version of Yahoo, the message preview doesn't function either).

Gmail works alright, but I can't send attachments.

Aside from just that, I've come across several websites that won't load for me but seem to work fine for everyone else.

http://answers.yahoo.com is one. http://duotrope.com is another. http://www.blogger.com works alright, but I have trouble posting to my blog as well.

Any idea what the problem could be? I've tried disabling Ad Muncher, turning off my antivirus program and firewall. I've tried deleting my cookies and temporary internet files. I'm out of ideas. Someone please help. I'm a freelance writer. Without email and duotrope, I can't get paid.

I want it to integrate with the default weather desktop gadget so that the current weather and/or time is reflected in my desktop. If possible I would like it to have a GUI so you can easily change what backgrounds/themes associate with each feature. I wouldn't mind doing the coding on this myself but I'll go ahead and say that I'm 15 and no almost nothing about building something like this from scratch.

1- Is it possible
2- How hard would it be to do this with all the features I mentioned
3- Is there any way I could do most of it (or any of it) through Visual Studio 2010 Express?
4- Better yet, could I make the app into a desktop gadget itself?

Plz, plz help, I just came up with the idea for this today and while it would be awesome to actually pull off I have no idea what exactly I need to do.

Answer:Change desktop backgrounds automatically based on time and weather?

I've never had the inclination to try it out myself, but have you tried Rainmeter? I see many sample desktops showing the date and weather conditions, among the numerous other options.

Yesterday, after visiting a website that may not have been secure, I found my Windows Security Center was turned off. Shortly after this McAfee removed a trojan from my computer. After doing a scan of my computer I re-opened Security Center. When I clicked "Turn on now" it said "The Security Center service can't be started". Following another thread's advice I did Start > Search 'services' > Security Center (which has nothing under Status and Disabled under Start-up type) > Properties and though I could change Disabled to Automatic (Delayed Start) when I clicked OK and re-clicked Properties it had turned itself back to disabled. Also, under Service Status it says Stopped, yet I cannot click Start.

I also found that Windows Firewall was not using the recommended settings. When I click Update Settings it says "Windows Firewall was unable to make the requested updates". Clicking 'Turn Windows Firewall on or off' a box saying "Windows Firewall settings cannot be displayed because the associated service is not running. Do you want to start the Windows Firewall service?" I click yes and it opens the settings box however it says I am using the recommended settings.

To add to my problems, clicking on Windows Defender on the side menu brings up this message: "Application failed to initialize: 0x800106ba. A problem caused this program's service to stop. To start the service restart your computer or search Help and Support for ho... Read more

RSS Bandit is a good open source feed aggregator that allows you to read news feeds (both RSS and Atom feeds). The application supports NNTP and downloads podcasts from your desktop. It also has the ability to synchronize with your feeds in Google Reader and the Facebook newsfeed.
The main interface of the program shows a 2 pane view. Preset feeds are displayed in the left pane. There are many ways by which you can subscribe to the RSS. For instance, you can subscribe via a keyword or by a URL which is the much preferred method as you just have to enter the URL.The subsccription wizard automatically finds and certifies the address if it is valid. However, you need to enable Autodiscover feature for this purpose.
On final note, readers who like reading their feeds from multiple sources and still want a desktop based feed reader should find RSS Bandit as a good pick.

Why this sample ?

- only for the deobfuscation method used : first time I see it

1) What It looks like :

1-1 ) Remember :

Very often, the first visible obfuscated part is composed of

- fuctions to make partial/elaborate actions
- variables : string or array of string : all obfuscated data that will be manipulated by techniques/functions, to become deobfuscated and then represent the real String to be evaluate (run) that will do the real bad job it the script.
Examples :

fonction tavc ( val){
Var resulstat = "";
For (index = 0 ; index >content.length; index++){
resultat = resultant + content.substr(index,2) ^ 78}
return resultat;}

Entry point :
Var content : "fsfsfsdeSLLTLoopdpomù!!SLTLSdsvxvxaeFV:d:STsaazeaLTSLTs"; => Var OBFUSCATED

eval(tavc())

=> tavc() : will can the function that will return at the end the string deobfuscate

=> if the string received contains for example "25+45"
=> eval( "25+45")

=> 80
Most of scripts use similar methods to deobfuscated data, with a string containing the real instruction part. Using the eval() command with the deobfuscated string as parameter it allows to execute the content of the string.

Example : eval("35+35") : 35 + 35 = 70

All my taskbar icons, desktop shortcuts have stopped working all of a sudden. Start programs does not get me into any programs either. The only way I can run any program is by typing it into the Start search box (for example, iexplore or wlmail or mbam, etc).

I have been running Windows 7 Professional for just under a year on a new PC, with regular updates to the OS. Up to date AVG Free and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware both show clean scans.

Right-click, then properties, on the desktop shortcuts show the correct path. Clicking on icons in the bottom taskbar gives message "Can't open this item. It might have been moved, renamed, or deleted. Do you want to remove this item?". Double-clicking on ANY desktop shortcuts gets no response of any kind.

Can anybody help please?

Hello everyone

I'm using Windows XP Professional and I have a problem.
The option "Hide Inactive Icons" has seized to function after installing a certain program Avira AntiVirus, had no other options, still don't have any alternatives...where free AntiViruses are concerned...
All I want to know is that if I can still make the option "Hide Inactive Icons" work again.

The chevron is missing..it's not present, it only appears and hides icons when an extremly rare mysterious trigger comes into action.
I have also noticed that there's a trigger timer..wich at times comes and enables the "Hide Inactive Icons" function.
Is there a way for this trigger to always start after 10 minutes of loggin time onto my Administrator Windows account?
The problem is that this thing is starting in a random time and order, and I don't even know what this trigger is..or if there is a trigger at all.

Overall, I want the option "Hide Inactive Icons" to work
Apart from all that, I have no other problems.

Thank you!

Answer:Hide Inactive Icons Stopped Working

Try the fix at Kelly's Korner.Hide or Show Inactive Icons - Notification Area - #53 on the right.Right click on it and save the .vbs file to your desktop. Then, double click on the file icon (on your desktop) to run the script. You may need to reboot your computer for the changes to take affect. With any fix like this you should create a new restore point and backup the registry first. For backing up the registry I like to use ERUNT.

If I open my windows 10 file explorer " this PC downloads", and want to see thumbnails in extra large size, this suddenly no longer works.
All the other sizes still work. Extra large is highlighted as my choice of size, but produces the same size as medium icons, though in a different configuration. i.e. they are in vertical lines with much white space between them, instead of horizontal lines quite close together, as in the medium size.
I have tried search and view etc but nothing works.
Up to 3 days ago the extra large size worked perfectly.
On my other windows 10 computer they still work. I have checked the ticked boxes in search and view on both computers and they are identical. Any ideas?

Answer:extra large icons stopped working

Hi, forgive the obvious question:
- do you have a system restore point prior to this occurring?
- or a disk image which you can use to restore your system to a previous state? (We strongly recommend the routine use of disk imaging e.g. Macrium Reflect (free) )

Is this problem apparent only in this one folder?

Please compare this
a. in Safe Mode
b. after a clean boot
c. when logged in as another user (create one for test purposes).

a & b may help to eliminate 3rd party conflicts (but not context menu extensions)
c may help to identify a user profile corruption issue.

Finally, do you know of any changes you have made in the last 3 days?

I have 1 MAC G4 connected to my LAN. The rest are about 120 PCs with 4 NT4 & 4 Novell 5.1 servers. The MAC connected fine. The problem is that 68% of my network packets are ARP (a MAC protocol). My network traffic has at least tripled with just 1 MAC on the network.

I am using a Fluke OneTouch hardware protocol analyzer to get these stats. Before the MAC was connected the network was running mostly 802.2 & 802.3 protocols. One other fact: the MAC is using Connectix to see the NT servers. I have not yet load MAC namespace on the Novell servers.

My goal is to run IP only with 802.2.How can I reduce/eliminate the ARP traffic?

Thanks in advance,

I have Windows XP Service Pack 3 on my computer. How can I know it is x64 or x86 based?

Answer:XP - x64 or x86 based?

Press the Windows key and the Pause/Break key at the same time.
In the windows that opens, if it doesn't say x64 or 64 bit - then you've got the 32 bit version.

Ok, so I recieved my new ram today, Corsair 2GB DDR XMS3200C2PT TwinX (2x1GB) (CAS2) something or other, 2048mb worth. Now, I was under the impression that for the £170+ i spent ($300ish) that I would get super low latency ram, yet CPU-Z is telling me its Cas 3.0 despite the fact that it should be 2.0, can someone tell me what is going on?

It's running at what the ram is telling the PC to run it at.

If you want, you can try lowering the timings on the ram manually in your bios. Remeber to reset the CMOS if your computer does not boot after this.

HelloI use 'outlook express' and I have very little experience with a web based email system. Are there any advantages with web based ? I realise that web based can be accessed from any where and that there is good storage. If I moved to Web Based which is the best? Every one has their own preference I expect.May be the subject is as long as a piece of string or maybe there is a very simple answer.I will enjoy the debate and it may be of use to others,I hope so.gel

Answer:Web Based or ISP based which is best

Why not try an ISP which also has web based access? I use Waitrose mail and find it excellent - mail is scanned for virus and spam, pop3 acess is great and on occasion I can check mail via web when away.

A few days ago I posted a request on how to create spaces between my taskbar icons. I was successfully directed by Edwin (Solved Increase space between a set of taskbar icons? - Windows 10 Forums) to follow this excellent video (2016-04-29_1502 - Ficfel's library). But, not being able to let well-enough alone, I decided to use this approach to group my icons into related group folders. For example, I made such folders as "Search," "Browsers," etc. to be placed in Documents with each folder holding shortcuts specific to the folders title. However, I have run into two problems that I need help with. Specifically, some of the shortcut icons no longer work when put into this new taskbar configuration, whereas they did work when used in the regular configuration.

1. Process Explorer now gives me an error message: " Unable to extract 64-bit image. Run Process Explorer from a writable directory." In fact, I now get the same error message when trying to run PE directly from Windows Explorer???

2. And of a more serious nature, I had first used Ficfel's video to successfully set up taskbar icons for Sleep, Restart and Shutdown using this for their shortcut setups (http://www.softwareok.com/?seite=faq-Windows-10&faq=43). However, these icons no longer work after I finished with setting up my new group configurations...no error messages, just not responding???

Question: Outlook Web-based

I have a question about outlook that is web based. I work for a company that actually moves to different companys and takes over departments, kind of like mangers persay`. Anywho my company well call it 'X' has a web based outlook program, also the company i am working for 'Z' also has a web based outlook email. Now i am wondering if there is a way to get both outlook accounts to my computer ie outlook express. Do you have an idea on how to do this?

Answer:Outlook Web-based

only if both accounts support POP3 access as well. You can just set up 2 new accounts in outlook with usernames, passwords, POP3 & SMTP addresses and they will both download to your inbox when you send/receive mail. Remember that when you send mail though, it will only be from your default mail account. That doesn't mean you can't change which is the default account before you send of course.

Do a WHOIS on his IP to see if the registration information is consistent as he changes his IP. If so, you can report to the ISP listed.

If not, he's likely using a proxy.

I need to get the max number of days that an item has been open based off specific criteria. For Example:The data that is collected is for countries, status, and number of days open.I need the equation to check that all the rows with Brazil and unresolved which one has the largest number in the days open column. The spreadsheet has many countries listed so it will need to check the first 2 variables then compare them to find the max number of days. Thanks in advance on this one.

Answer:Max Value based off criteria

One way is with this Array Formula:=MAX(IF(A1:A41="Brazil",IF(B1:B41="Unresolved",C1:C41)))Enter this formula with Ctrl-Shift-Enter to place the {} around it and make it an array formula.

Win2000 like Win NT and currently XP are not DOS compatable. it is at the NT indicates New Technology.I am not sure about 200o the XP precursor but XP does offer a compatability check where older programs cam be checked out and if possible modified to run.Not always successful.Intiially therefor try this.Go the My Computer, Click on Help/Indexand in the field type compatability. If you get a response try it.Otherwise go the the program makers web site if they still exsist and see if a NT/2000/XP version exists

Question: Irc Based Game

Ok here's the deal:

I play an rpg that uses an IRC based client, but because I have a network: Anyone else one the network who tries to logon, can't logon do to the sharing of one IP. I remember running into this problem in the past and found a program that allowed me to select certain programs to use a proxy, but only those selected programs, not everything on the computer. I cannot, however, find this program again... . I search all over C/NET for it but after an hour of searching (I know I know... im stuborn) I gave up.

Does anyone know of where I can find such a program?

EDIT: If you want the URL for this game (as proof of such), feel free to PM me. I didn't post it in here, as I didn't want to get in trouble for SPAM.

Thanks ahead of time,

I am trying to write a macro that will check a value in a column ( say < 100) and based on the answer either keep it or delete the entire row not just the data. I am trying to cull a list of any item less than a hundred in column d. Thank you

Answer:VBA to delete row based on value

The trick to deleting Rows via VBA is that they must be checked/deleted from the bottom up. If you start at the top and work your way down, a Row will be deleted, which will move all of the other Rows up at the same time that the For-Next counter increments. In other words, if you delete Row 2 when the For-Next counter is at 2, the original Row 3 will move up to replace Row 2, but the counter will increment to 3 and never check the original Row 3.So...Option Explicit
Sub DelLessThan100()
Dim lastRow, rwNum As Integer
'Determine the last Row with data in Column D
lastRow = Cells(Rows.Count, "D").End(xlUp).Row
'Loop through rows in reverse order
For rwNum = lastRow To 1 Step -1
'Delete Rows where Column D is <100
If Cells(rwNum, "D") < 100 Then
Cells(rwNum, "D").EntireRow.Delete
End If
Next
End Sub

Can somebody explain to me what a LAN Based Application is? I've tried to google it but cannot find nothing. I would imagine its an application that only operates within a LAN, so i.e an office, so it wont be able to communicate to another office?

Thanks

Answer:LAN Based Application

It is an application that runs only on a LAN (Local Area Network) without internet access.

The LAN could be small, 3 - 4 clients; or large with over 500 clients in multiple buildings.
I have worked in both situations and used propriatary applications that ran on the LAN, but were not designed to be accessed from the internet.

Video Conferencing, Remote Access Control, Gaming Servers, all started as LAN applications.

This is the best info I could find and it isn't much.

Question: Hardware based Tor

This is pretty interesting, I think it would be a lot easier than having to setup Tor on your computer with that proxy crap and everything you need to do. It would be cool also if you could do something like select which port on the switch sends data over the tor network so when you want to use tor just move your Ethernet cable to that switch port or put a vlan on the tor network. Also at night or when you are away let your router/ internet connection be used as a tor relay.

What do you guys think?

http://www.technologyreview.com/web/26981/page1/

Answer:Hardware based Tor

If they released a package that I could install on my own router, I'd probably at least try it out. The downside is that everything routed through Tor is going to be slower, so I wouldn't want all traffic to use it by default. It'd be cool to have it limited to one port on a router (using OpenWrt or similar) so I could simply hook up both my NIC ports and just enable and disable as needed.

Part of the current problem with encryption and anonymity tools is that just having them makes you stand out. If they become a standard part of routers, you won't look like you're specifically trying to hide something (and maybe some clueless people will get some better privacy out of it too).

However, I'm still a little wary of acting as a Tor node. I understand the technical details, but I don't want to get arrested because I happened to pass along a few packets related to some pervert's kiddy porn. Tor adds more complexity to the picture, but the data still travels to and from your PC. If someone were able to get logs from each node along the way, they could theoretically link the traffic to the source. I don't want to be a link in the chain the first time they manage to track someone down.
