Screen timeout an issue on one laptop

Question: Screen timeout an issue on one laptop

I have several laptops, one issued by my work and is under the azure identity management. Since inception this laptop screen timeout was always 5 min despite attempts to change. Finally, out admin was able to change it to 30 min, but even though it says 30 minutes the timeout varies from 10 min to 30 min. All my other, using the same win 10 build function fine.
Any thoughts?

Preferred Solution: Screen timeout an issue on one laptop

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hiya,
I am trying to fix this laptop

The problem is that the screen is always very dark, even though it briefly flashes up ok for about 1 second when it is POST'ing. I thought at first that the screen was dead, so i connected it upto an external monitor which worked fine, then I started to press Fn and F11 to cycle through the available displays and noticed something strange.

With the external monitor connected the laptop screen is very dark but you can just make out a few things, press Fn and F11 and both the laptop screen and extenal monitor go blank, press Fn and F11 again and the picture appears for about 1 second on the laptop OK then goes back to being dark but just making out a few things and the external monitor is OK.

Is the laptop screen completely dead or not? If so why does it briefly display OK?

I have emailed the technical support people and all they said was
?It sounds like the timeout switch is faulty?
Any idea what a timeout switch is and can it be replaced without replacing the screen? I have replied back to them asking them similar questions but I?m think I may get another ?detailed? email like the first one.

Thanks,
Steve

Answer:Laptop screen and timeout switch

you will find that the timeout switch is the switch that turns the screen off when you shut the lid. to replace the switch, you will have to dismantle the laptop so that you can remove the damaged switch and then replace it with the new switch. can you use a soldering iron. most times they are soldered onto the M/B. if you are lucky, it won't be. good luck

Question: Timeout issue.

Hello!

I have recently beginning to have timeout issues with my home network, it's coming about every 30min, but not very often on my girlfriends PC. She only browses Facebook, but did not do it last time I got this error.

The network becomes unavaible for 20~ seconds, then it's back up again, and this is what I found from Event Viewer.
"Name resolution for the name ssl.gstatic.com timed out after none of the configured DNS servers responded."
It's not only gstatic that show up, others aswell.

When this occured last time, I was playing an online game, no browser open or anything else, just the game (Also counting processes, only windows system processes + game running).

Our router doesn't say anything at the time of the DNS error, but if you think it's related, this is from the router log:
These are the only ones that show up in the log. [Model: NETGEAR CG3100]

Code:

Issue1: IP packet w/MC or BC SRC addr
Issue2: Illegal TCP header
Any ideas or thoughts? Feel free to ask for more information.

EDIT: It seems to work perfectly with wireless network, still same problems wired.

Answer:Timeout issue.

Wasn't too happy with that edit, it's happening on wireless aswell.

It has been reduced since I manually input my ISP's DNS, but still not completely gone.
I've also tried Googles open DNS, but didn't change anything.

Question: DNS timeout issue.

Ok.

At work, when someone enters a domain name in the browser, it times out. But when they try that same domain name immediately after, it resolves it fine.

When people are VPN'ed into our network, they have to enter the domain name 3 times, and then it resolves.

All of our machines are pointed toward our w2k3 server for DNS, and that server is set up with multiple fowarders.

Any idea what could be causing the problem?

Thanks!

You may have seen this, but it might help, depending on the version of dns.exe you're running ...

My home network is laid out thusly:

Linksys WRT400N dual band router
Linksys 2x WGA600N dual band bridges
5x computers and an xbox 360
All three wireless devices are operating on the 5Ghz band and generally it's clear.

Now I recently brought in a system I had at my office to be another machine at home to work on, however when I set it up for whatever reason it's badly timing out network-wise when it hits my router. It's difficult to even download a 10MB file because it will timeout before it finishes in many cases. I run a ping to my router with a -t and watch it and it will timeout every minute or so and come back. Now here are the odd parts:

* I don't timeout while pinging any other computer locally also connected to my switch.
* I don't timeout while pinging the WGA600N bridge.
* I don't timeout while pinging the OTHER WGA600N bridge which is technically going through the router I'd think, though it could be directly pinging it wirelessly.
* The other two computers plugged into the switch with me DO NOT timeout at all while hitting the router.
* I also timeout while pinging the WHS which is physically attached to the router.
* I've tried several different network card drivers with no change, I've done a clean install of Win7, AND as far as I can recall there were no network issues back at my office.
* Kids computer is using the exact same motherboard with the same onboard realtek NIC. I even matched it's driver to ... Read more

I have been playing several online multiplayer games for several years now. I am an alpha tester for Eleven, the new version of Glitch. I've been doing fine, then last month, I started timing out before the game loads. I have been working with their devs, but none of us can find out why. My computer is not old, I have AT&T's fastest internet speed, and no trouble downloading or uploading, etc. We ran several speed tests and did pings, but nothing was off.
So, today, I again ran Superantispyware, defragged (didn't really need to), cleared my caches, cleared my flash, ran CCleaner, and rebooted in-between each of those. I then used AT&T's speed test, and it times out before complete every time! Just before it does, the latency is about 39-47, if that helps at all.
I have tried to get in the game in Chrome, Firefox and Opera (Edge does not do well with the game at all).
I don't know if it is relevant, but I also play in the Beta version of FlightRising, and have had a fairly significant slow down lately, but I can play and have no problem getting in the game.
Also, I know Flash changed recently and we all had to delete the old versions and go with the new Beta one to get back on the Eleven server, but I did that, and generally have no trouble getting into the server.
Please, can someone help?

I have recently run into an issue where I am having timeout issues with a couple of websites. The problem is that I can not access them on my laptop while I am on my home network. When I take my laptop to school, work, or I am on a friend network I can access them but not at home. On my home network I can access them on any other computer or device that is connected through that network.

I have tried in all of the browsers on my computer (FF4, IE9, and Safari) and pinged the site and every attempt times out. Again, this does not happen if I take my laptop to another network.

I use Windows 7 Pro 64bit. I connected my laptop straight into my modem to see if it was happening because of my switch, but it still happens even then.

Things I have tried:
I turned off my firewall.
Went through my internet options and deleted the data for the two sites
Cleared my cache and cookies
Turned off my IPV6
Set each of my browsers so that they can go through my firewall when it is on.
ipconfig /release and ipconfig /renew
Unplugged and let my modem sit for 10 hours while my laptop was also turned off for 10 hours after I did the ipconfig /release

I have confirmed that I am not IP blocked from the websites or banned in any way.

If anyone has any ideas that could help I would appreciate it more than you could know.

Answer:Unknown Timeout Issue

VEW may give a clue as to what is causing the connection to timeout.

Download VEW by Vino Rosso http://images.malwareremoval.com/vino/VEW.exe
and save it to your desktop
Double click it to start it Note: If running Windows Vista or Windows 7 you will need to right click the file and select Run as administrator and click Continue or Allow at the User Account Control Prompt.
Click the check boxes next to Application and System located under Select log to query on the upper left
Under Select type to list on the right click the boxes next to Error and Warning Note: If running Windows Vista or Windows 7 also click the box next to Critical (not XP).
Under Number or date of events select Number of events and type 20 in the box next to 1 to 20 and click Run
Once it finishes it will display a log file in notepad
Please copy and paste its entire contents into your next reply

Hi all, I have a bit of a problem with what I think may be a timeout problem with my router. You'll want to know my network configuration I guess, so here it is:Router: Linksys WAG54GPC's connected to router: 1 x PC running Win XP - wired into router. 1 x PC running Win XP with wireless newtwork card. 1 x laptop running Win XP with integrated wireless card.I also have an xbox360 set up on the wireless network, and this is where the problem seems to happen.I have no problems with my pc's timeing out, in fact the network runs perfectly to the best of my knowledge. However, I bought Final Fantasy XI for my XBox 360 this weekend, and in order to play the game you first of all have to install something called 'Playonline viewer' which I did without any drama. The problem is this. Once I connect to Playonline viewer it says I have to update the game files. No problem so far. However, there's 1,783 files to update and whenever I get to approx 80% of the files checked I get an error message saying the server cannot be found. This has led me to 'google' the problem and has led me to the conclusion that the most likely cause is that my router is closing Port 53 after a set time. I say that because it appears that the game updates to 85% every time if I very quickly start the update once connected (takes about 10 minutes before I get the error message at a guess). The later I start the update the earlier in the update it gives the error message.Does this make any sense? If so, is it possi... Read more

Answer:Linksys WAG54G timeout issue on UDP?

Just a bit more info if it's of any use. I rang the helpline for the Playonline viewer and they said that Port 53 must be open to update the game, I also rang my ISP (Kingston Karoo) who told me that they don't block that port, this is another thing that makes me wonder if it's a setting on the router.Don't know if that helps or not!

I'm looking for suggestions on why my IBM ThinkPad with Windows XP Pro SP3 presents a web site connection-timeout failure. The web site is not a high-traffic site -- it's the University of Akron at www.uakron.edu (IP=130.101.217.69). Here are my diagnostic deductions so far.

* The failure is not a router or modem problem, since I can reach the web site when I use either of two different computers (one with XP Pro SP3, the other with XP Pro SP2) through the same router-modem hookup. Also, therefore, it is not a site-blocking problem or a DNS server problem.
* It is not a network-connection problem, since that different computer can reach the web site through both a wired connection and a wireless connection.
* It is not a browser-specific problem, since the failure occurs whether I use IE or Firefox.
* It is not a browser cache issue, since the failure occurs after clearing the browser's cache.
* It is not a system DNS cache issue, since the failure occurs after flushing the cache, and in any case the failure occurs even using the IP address in lieu of the domain name.
* It is not (apparently) related to miscellaneous browser settings, since the problem occurs when running Firefox in safe mode. (This was not tested with IE, which I never actually use.)

I suspect that the culprit is something arcane in the operating system as installed on my computer. Any ideas? Thanks for giving this some attention.

I noticed that my biggest problem with internet is that pages timeout... I type a url many times during the day I'll have to hit the refresh button because the page supposedly started to load but didnt do so fast enough

I noticed that when I used the windows task manager (ctrl+alt+del) in the processes tab to set the priority for firefox.exe to "AboveNormal" pages loaded perfectly.. and didnt have this timeout problem, actually it seemd that pages loaded faster and all... it was great... however, everytime I closed firefox, the priority set back to "Normal"

Is there anyway to set firefox's priority to "AboveNormal" permanently???

PS - I got rid of ALL malware on my PC, and used Dr.Tcp to tweak my Tcp settings in order to optimize internet (ISP advertised speed of 512kbps / actual speed of my connection is 452 kbps (56.5 KB/sec.) / 121 kbps (15.1 KB/sec.)

Hi,
I'm having trouble connecting and staying connected to game servers on my y500. I'm running the intel centrino wireless- N 2230 card and my router is the tp-link TL-WR941ND (300M Wireless N Router)

Currently there are 6 devices connected which i suspect may be contributing to the lower than normal performance but even at 4 in the morning I'll still get 400ms lag spikes lasting anywhere from a second to a minute. Its very frustrating being kicked for a lag spike.

Attached is a picture of me pinging my router using ping 192.168.1.1 -t

Answer:Y500 Network Timeout issue

hi cornholio223,

If you get no problems when using an ethernet cable then it's possible that the wireless card or the wireless access point have incompatible settings.

Things that you can try:

On the computer's side:
1. If you're running on Win8 and the Wi-Fi driver being used is the Intel WLAN Driver v15.5.5.47 from the lenovo site, can you update it to v17.1.0 from the Intel website

Wireless_17.1.0_De64.exe
Version: 17.1.0 (Latest)
Date: 08/20/2014
Size: 21.69 MB

2. Set the computer's power options to "High Performance" and turn off the bluetooth (the Intel N2230 is a Wi-FI/Bluetooth combo card).

- Bluetooth - Turn On or Off in Windows 8
- Sample image

3. Reseat the Wi-FI antenna and ensure they're firmly connected
    - Link to picture (see page 42 of the HMM)

On the router's side:
4. If you're using WPA2-PSK [TKIP] encryption, change it to WPA2-PSK [AES] and observe.
5. If the router is broadcasting multiple SSID's Use inSSIDer to pick the best channel for your Wi-FI and set it accordingly to the router
6. If you have WMM / Bandwidth Control enabled, try to temporarily disable it

I have a system running Server 2003 Standard w/ SP1. Out of nowhere I started losing network connectivity to it. I have replaced all network related hardware that is connecting it (router, cables, NICs), however I am still experiencing issues.

Any attempts to make an inbound connection will fail until I go to the system itself and initiate an outbound connection. Simply opening up a web site will lead to everything working fine, yet within an hour inbound connections will fail again. There are no messages in Event Viewer indicating any problems. I have stupidly patched it by leaving CNN open in a minimized web browser since it automatically refreshes itself every 10 minutes or so, but I would like to figure out what is causing this and fix it at the root. Has anyone experienced anything like this before?

hi, all
I bought two of these "smart" batteries a couple days ago from this website http://www.batterieschargeur.fr/dell-latitude-xt-tablet-pc.html due to the good prices and longer warranty. Now i tried to use the the smart mode in the battery manager according to what the customer service have noticed me.*

well, the thing is, there are some options coming to me to control when "data" is turned off. Does it mean i should disable 3G, WiFi or both of them? But i think this practise is dangerous since it's probably resulting in push e-mail or other background data being out of updating after the 15min timeout period,. In other word, most of my data connections will be timeout issue in the smart battery modeclosed and i can't get e-mails in this mode.Does anyone has any issues with the data on smart mode, including timeout and others. Discuss any thoughts here, welcome!!*

Answer:timeout issue in the smart battery mode

The purpose is to disable unused devices/features that aren't needed or that aren't being used to preserve battery power. If you need those devices or features, then adjust the settings so that they don't shut off. And the timers typically start during periods of inactivity. So if it's being used, nothing should be shutting off.

In any case, the settings apply to all batteries, not just a specific battery. You shouldn't need to make any changes from the existing configuration after only changing the battery.

Hello, So I have a user that just recently started to have an issue.  The laptop is fine (beyond the sound issues with the X230 which aren't solved (sound issue)), but if the user puts the laptop in the docking station with the laptop lid/screen closed/down, the external monitor only displays the desktop background but no login screen or desktop icons. This user has Windows 7 Pro. on it, I just installed the latest video driver from Lenovo's site and that didn't help.  I made sure the screens were set to clone and not extended displays. When the user flips up the laptop screen/lid, both screens are cloned and all is fine.  Supposedly this just started to happen a few days ago. But if the user has the laptop turned off, puts it in the docking station, closes the lid and turns the laptop on, the external monitor works just fine. I've changed clone to extended desktop just to see if that would help any but it didn't.  Set her back to cloned displays. Only other thing I can think of doing is to make sure the external monitor's resolution is set right but...don't understand what's going on.... Thoughts?

Answer:x230 (2320) laptop issue with external monitor when laptop lid/screen is up

Hi, cftech

My first recommendation would be to make sure that the BIOS and chipset drivers are the latest version. Since the external monitor works, just only certain circumstances, this is most likely a software issue of some sort. The BIOS can be found here and the chipset here.

Also, if possible, could you have the user try to connect to the external monitor without the docking station? I'm just curious if the docking station could have something to do with the issue,

Best of luck, and let me know how it goes
Adam

I have set my screen to turn off at 2 minutes while plugged in and also on battery. I've tried other times, but nothing changed. After the alotted time, it goes blank, but immediately comes back on. I've tried changing the times, tried it unplugged, tried to use sleep mode at the same threshold, but nothing works. I thought it might be my external monitor, but even with that unplugged nothing works. Powercfg -requests gives me "None" under every category. Powercfg -energy gives me a warning about USB selective suspend, but even with my external hard drive disconnected I get the same results. I bought this laptop with Windows 8. It worked as desired through upgrading to 8.1, but with 10 it does not. There are no display driver updates from ASUS. Since it's not sleep mode that's the problem (I THINK), there are no reports in event viewer, and last wake is when I opened the lid.
I want the screen off, but I'm not asking for it to go to sleep (unless I can keep my external HD awake, which TBH I don't know is possible). I don't mind closing the lid occasionally, but I run Plex (with the external HD) before going to sleep and I'd like to have my screen turn off without Plex losing connection to my server. I believe I've given all the relevant info, and when I registerred I entered some info about my laptop (but I don't know how easy it is to access). Thanks for any help.

Answer:Startup Screen Timeout

Right-click on the My Computer icon on your desktop or in your Start menu and choose Properties from the popup menu.Select the Advanced tab, and then the Settings button under Startup and Recovery You should see a window like this:Change the number in the Time to display list of operating systems field to however many seconds you want. Then click OK. That should do it.

Hi all,
This may seem silly, but I can't get screensaver and screen timeout to work properly on my W10 desktop. I set it, even the screensaver preview works as expected but when I leave the PC be, it does not activate. Even when I lock the PC, the lock screen stays on, screen saver does not active, neither does the screen blackout after set amount of minutes. Does anyone else have these issues?

I have followed this tutorial to have my account lock after 15 minutes, and it does not work. The account stays open for as long as the computer is on, which is extremely frustrating. This is the biggest thing I hate about Windows 8. Why has this important security/privacy feature been overlooked?

If anyone has a different solution to this, I'd love to learn about it.

Answer:Lock screen timeout does not work

Hello Knocks, and welcome to Eight Forums.

That tutorial is for setting how many minutes Windows 8 will wait idle with no activity when the computer is already locked before timing out and automatically turning off the display instead.

For what you want, you could set screen saver to the "(None)" or "blank" screen saver, check the "On resume, display logon screen" box, and set the "Wait" time to 15 minutes.

Hi, My t540p screen is acting strange. within 45 secs of no activity, it goes black screen, but the power is still on - one can see the fact that the screen is on due to glow. i am unsure as to why or how this occurs, as my display is set never to shut down in either battery or power mode.

I have two brand new L702x's which are both playing up.

when the screen turns off, as per the timeout set in power options, "Turn off the display", it won't come back on until I press ctrl alt del. Even when an external screen is plugged in, it doesn't come back on but the second screen does....

Any ideas......?

The screen timeout behavior on my Yoga 13 has been rather erratic.   Even though all the power management settings and screensaver settings are set to at least 15 minutes, it will often timeout directly to a black screen in only 1 or 2 minutes of no activity, requiring me to wake it back up and login again. I recently figured out that this does NOT happen if I touch the screen periodically.  Then it seems to function correctly.  For example, after several minutes of inactivity it will actually go to the screensaver.  This NEVER happens if I don't touch the screen and instead use only keyboard and mouse. One thing that might be a factor is that I am using an external wireless USB keyboard and mouse. Either way, the screen timeout is supposed to reset the countdown anytime there is keyboard, mouse or touch input.  This is not happening. Is there a fix for this?

Some phones have a "never" option in the lockscreen timeout settings, but I don't think there's a rhyme or reason to its availability which is odd.
You can just crank it up to max and tap it occasionally? Some apps should keep it awake, like some video players.

My computer auto-upgraded to Windows 10 from Windows 7. Though I am growing to like Windows 10, this screen timeout issue is actually causing me problems in my profession.

I have read through the forums to figure out why my screen is timing out. I have tried installing the System Unattended Timeout, and setting it to 0. I have tried changing my screensaver to None. I have tried everything suggested, and cannot resolve the issue. My screen still times out after 60 seconds.

I have a presentation Saturday, and my PowerPoint slideshow has a number of slides that show videos, one after another. Because my screen times out, I cannot let this run like it should, I have to constantly keep moving the mouse to keep the presentation up on the screen. This is going to appear very unprofessional. Please help. I really need to be able to put my best foot forward in this presentation.

Answer:Unable to correct screen timeout

Did you try to go to Control Panel > Power options (Your power plan) > Change power settings and set Turn off display after to never ?
There's also Advanced power settings where you can do even finer settings.
Note that laptop may hove some utility from manufacturer to deal with power savings that may override Windows settings. Some battery saver etc.

Have Dell Latitude D400 Laptop which is several years old. For many months, had minor problem where LCD screen would have partial garbled horizontal lines, but when I shifted the screen angle -- moved screen on hinges -- back and forth slightly, then screen would be fine. But recently, the bottom 70% of the screen has turned to olive green mush with a few other vertical lines, where as the top 30% of the screen is fine. When I connect external monitor to rear jack, I am able to see all the graphics there and the hardware and software otherwise performing. When run built-in diagnostics, get graphics error with no external monitor, but all tests just fine when ext monitor connected. Conclusion from on line chat with Dell Tech was LCD Screen problem and referred me to the toll free SALES phone number -- meaning just purchase another one.

How do I know if the problem is the LCD screen being shot, or possibly just needing to clean or repair the connection through the hinges from the CPU/graphics card to the screen itself? If the latter, who should I seek to do such a repair or can I get guidance to open the unit and try myself as I am technically comfortable doing so with instruction? And given the cost of new laptops today, if I need to go outside for repairs, where should I look and up to what cost do you think is worth it, vs just abandon and purchase a new one.

Answer:Laptop LCD screen or screen connection issue

Could be a bad connection or the LCD might be shot. I would take it apart and at least poke around if it is no longer under warranty. Dell has some pretty good service manuals on their site. I think yours is here: http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/latd400/en/index.htm#online_documentation

If you don't find anything obvious wrong with it, you can most likely get a screen off FleaBay for a few bucks and try it out.

Or just get some huge hinges and mod a 50" plasma screen on it...

Good luck!

I notice that the tablet/phone lock screen is still appearing for Desktop/Laptop installs and wonder why.

Previously when I enable turning off the lock screen in gpedit.msc it turns off the lock screen timeout too. But on the latest build I still get a much sooner timeout to my MS password than what I have set in Power Options.

How do I turn off the supposed Lock Screen timeout when I don't have a lock screen? This is annoying, and surely will annoy MS' billion+ desktop customers who don't need a phone or tablet lockscreen or timeout on their desktop/laptop which already has familar timeouts to password in Power Options.

I've been searching for quite some time, but I seem to want the exact opposite to most people. I want to have a way to set my screen timeout shorter than 1 minute. It seems like by default I can't actually make it shorter than that time. Does anyone know of a method?

How about a hot key? I've one on my keyboard already (laptop).

Otherwise you might be able to do it by writing a script in Autohotkey, for example- just not quite sure what you'd test for. Key press? Mouse movement?

I Installed MySQL/PHP/Apache in the last few weeks (an ordeal to say the least!) and now I get a blank screen after about 20min instead of my happy screensaver at 60min. THis timeout also seems to interupt running programs or downloads. I have looked in all three conf files and extended all numbers that look to be timeout instructions but no change.....

Anyone have any ideas? Don't assume I know anything - it could easily be something very simple that I have overlooked......

Thanks in advance.

Answer:WinXP Inactivity Timeout to Login screen

I think this occurs when you resume from screensaver when you have password protection on resume enabled.

Start --> Settings --> Control Panel

Display Settings

Click on the ScreenSaver tab and change the screensaver timeout. Also you could untick the box that says password protect on resume. You might also check the power saving settings.

Does anyone have an idea where the hell the timer for the lock screen monitor standby option is?

It's not a universal setting under the power options/Turn off display which is set to 30 mins.

Currently have a Lumia 720 and maximum time out is 5 mins which does not help with golf GPS apps such as Free Caddy as it locks soon after each shot rather than be free flowing. May upgrade to 735 if 'never' function is available - as it seems to be in a random selection of Lumias.

Answer:Does the Nokia Lumia 735 have a 'Never' option for the Lock Screen Timeout?

It's not a random selection but a ROM limited feature. Some ROM variants have it, some don't. Same could be said about the static IP option in Wi-Fi settings and field test mode. I don't have a 720 myself so can't really tell you which ROM had it enabled but if you managed to find one you can always flash to that ROM to get the lacking features, a phone change is really not needed.

You should be able to press any key to turn the screen back on. If you are referring to sleep mode, if pressing a key isn't waking the computer up, open up Device Manager, expand keyboards, right click your keyboard and click Properties, then go to the Power Management tab and check the "Allow this device to wake the computer" box.

I've repeatedly tried to change my logon screen saver timeout time via

Start | Run regedt32 | HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Control Panel\Desktop\ScreenSaveTimeOut

but although it faithfully stores the number of seconds I want, it keeps actually timing out after 10 minutes no matter what. It wouldn't matter otherwise, but having more than one user accounts necessitates reentering the password for the desired account as if you weren't even already logged in. So how do I make this really work?

Answer:how to REALLY change logon screen saver timeout time

Have you tried changing the time from the Screen Saver menu at Personalize, Screen Saver. You have the option to chose up to 9,999 minutes. And you can choose to have a password required when screen resumes, or not.

A couple of weeks ago I bought an S205 without OS and installed my own copy of XP on it (SP3). I spent a long time trying to dual boot with Linux but the UEFI system seems to prevent this... I'm not tech enough to understand why, but I gave up trying after a week tearing my hair out. Anyway, XP runs nice and quick now but I have 2 problems with it. 1 - When I put the computer in standby mode it wakes itself up sometimes for no reason. This happens even when there are no applications open. 2 - The screen turns itself off after 1 minute. I have installed Lenovo Power Management, and no matter what the settings are in this, the screen ALWAYS turns itself off after 1 minute. Checked in Windows Power settings, but the Lenovo software seems to override these. Any help or advice much appreciated. Thanks

Hello again everyone!

I have set my screen saver timeout to 1 minute awhile ago and now it won't allow me to change it to anything else. Even if i uncheck the "On resume, display logon screen" it still times out to 1 minute with "None" selected and the check box unchecked. After one minute of no activity, the log on screen is shown (after the lock screen).

I have tried everything except "Refreshing windows settings"

I am really annoyed and never had any troubles before. Google isn't helping either, everything Google showed I have tried. One things said about resetting security policies under user accounts but i do not have anything like that.

Thanks everyone!

Answer:[SOLVED] Windows 8.1 Screen Saver timeout stuck at 1 min

Hi did you see this post

You may be at the wrong screen. You are most likely under PC Settings -> Accounts. The easiest way is to just press the windows key -> type: "user accounts" -> Reset Security Policies, located on the upper left hand side of the window.

Also found under:

Control Panel -> User Accounts and Family Security -> User Accounts

If it is not located under there then I believe that no changes have been made that require a reset, or you may have a different issue at hand other than an application enabling a 1 minute auto-lock feature onto your window's user account.

Good Luck.

when i unplug my ac adapter from the wall before i unplug it from my lappy the screen stays bright, which isnt bad. but when i plug it in(wall first then lappy) it goes dim, like its in power saving mode. now how i usually fix this is i recreate the problem by unplugging it from the wall then turning the comp off, then unplug it from the comp while plugging it back into the wall, turn the comp on then plugging it back in. but it usually takes me a couple tries to get it back to normal again. ive turned off my power saving features and ive just had the computer screen replaced about 2 weeks ago. its always done this and i know it happens when i unplug it from the wall first; which if im in a hurry i dont think about it untill its to late.

its not that big of a problem but i would love to know how to fix it faster or maybe disable any features that could cause this.

Hello,

For the past few days sometimes when I open my laptop I get a grey screen with horizontal streaks (sometimes black with horizontal streaks) running across the screen. If I close the screen and re-open it eventually it will go back to normal. I've also had the screen freeze a few times for a few seconds while I'm using it.

I've hooked it up to my TV when it had the grey screen and it was working fine so I'm pretty sure it's the laptop screen. This doesn't happen all the time so if the solution is get a new screen I'll just live with it, but perhaps something simpler?

Answer:Laptop screen issue

My first guess would be the video card or driver but if you hook it to an external monitor and it is OK then it does point to the Laptop screen. Sometimes the ribbon cable from the Motherboard to the monitor can get loose or damaged. Not saying that is what it is tho.

I've had a HP dv6 laptop for close to a year now and have had zero issues up until the last week. I've noticed when watching videos in fullscreen for even a short period of time the contrast for the screen goes right up up when the video is exited, basically if I watch something and then minimise it whatever is behind it is almost unreadable, such as the standard chrome bar up top looks almost one solid, bright colour, after 5 to 10 seconds its back to how it should look.
It's also a LED display
Anybody have a similar situation or know what the problem could be?

Thanks
Andy

Depending on what program you use for watching videos it may just be bugging up, but also it may be that the program is infected in some way. Have you tried a virus scan?

Hi. I've had this laptop, a Dell Inspirion 1200, for a few weeks now. I usually either close the cover or put it into Hibernation when I'm done using it. I haven't jarred it, shocked it, or stepped on it.

Basically, I opened up the cover and hit power. While it was booting up, I looked away to do something, and when I looked back, the screen was covered in white vertical lines. I shut down the computer by holding down the power button, then rebooted. When it came up again, it was perfectly fine (no lines at all.)

Is this a fluke or something I should worry about in the future?

There is no way to fix it the issue is whether it is serious enough to require that HP replace the screen. There is a "pixel policy" that governs the terms of the warranty. You need to contact HP Warranty Support to see if you can get a new screen.

About 2 weeks ago, a pink line appeared on my laptop screen. It is a straight line running down the length of the screen on the left side. A couple of days ago another line appeared, this time yellow. I am fairly certain that this is a hardware issue (driver re-install and system rebuild have not helped). I contacted HP who told me my 15month old laptop is out of warranty and will cost 250 to repair.Do I have any other options?ThanksTony Webber

Answer:HP Laptop screen issue

Not really it is a hardware issue rather than software I suspect. You could try ebay to get yourself a new screen cheaper and install it yourself. Usually screens are about 50 - 150 depending on the one you need. However some home insurance may cover you for the costs but remember the rise in the premium before you do claim.

Hello All.
So I just bought a 200GB micro SD card for my 950XL. I copied the contents of my old micro SD card to it, along with my 100+GB music collection. So now Groove on my 950XL is slowly adding all the songs from the new micro SD card but, every time the screen locks, it seems Groove forgets about adding songs and starts again from the beginning again (or just stops and I have to get it to start adding songs again - it then starts from zero).
Is there any way for Groove to add songs automatically in the background without needing the phone unlocked and Groove in the foreground?
Many thanks.

Hi All

Does anyone have any experience of an Advent Laptop working fine, but
when you shut Windows Vista down, shortly after the screen goes blank,
the screen switches back on to a bright white?

The laptop is not on, but the screen is.... obviously this drains the battery.

Apparently some wine was spilt towards the QWERTY side of the keyboard

Any ideas?

Chris

This is most likely in the wrong forum so feel free to move it to where it should go.

I have a 600m Dell Inspiron laptop. One of the hinges of the laptop screen seems to be broken so whenever i adjust the screen the monitor just falls and closes the laptop. Although it is incovenient the laptop works perfectly. i was wondering if a) this could later on affect the laptop and mess up my screen and b) if anyone knew whether Dell warranty would fix this for me or am I held responsibles (even though i have not dropped the computer to cause this to happen).

Thanks for any suggestions!

Ok. I'm not retarded i swear.
Right now im on a laptop thats resolution is at like 1600/1200 or something and id like it down to 1024/768. Usualy when i do that the icons and everything becomes bigger but it fits the entire size of the screen. Now when i do it on this laptop it just shrings the desktop down to that size and leaves a huge black box around everything else. Anyone have any idea what im missing?

I was using my laptop yesterday afternoon, when the screen began to fail. I turned the laptop off because it had froze, and when I tried to turn it back on, it just continuously reboots and shuts off, and the screen will not come on.

I have tried plugging in an external screen, but it does not receive a signal from the laptop, nor will the external keyboard I have to use (laptop keyboard is broken, not important).

Is there any way I can get the laptop to work again without taking it to a repair shop, or does a certain part need to be replaced?

Answer:Laptop won't start after screen issue

It could be one of several issues and from the sounds of it, would require a part replacement. Possibly the video card, but my best guess would be motherboard failure. I really wouldn't be able to tell for sure without further testing.

Hi,
I have a Windows 8 Laptop and every few days my laptop screen appears to have spotlights shining down from the top of the screen. If I disable / enable the graphics card in device manager they vanish for a few hours. The image attached shows the display issue (found on google) but the lights are shining upward on the image - in my case the lights shine down from the top.Can anyone please tell me what is causing this and the fix. Thanks,John

Answer:Windows 8 Laptop Screen Issue

It is called "Flashlighting".  Common with LCD screens, that are lit by CFL lighting.

My laptop screen has developed a vertical grey band about 10cm wide which starts very light but as I leave the laptop switched on gets increasingly dark and when dark I can see effectively a shadow of a previous image on the screen, making it very difficult to read. I'm concerned that it may not simply be a screen replacement issue as there seems some comment that it may be a connector cable issue.  Any ideas?

The screen on my laptop is moving to the right of the screen and I can't access the left side of the screen. When I drag it across to the left it flies back to the right. The desktop is fine, this only happens when I am in an application e.g. hotmail, facebook, etc. The cat walked across the keyboard so I'm not sure if some of the keys pressed have created this issue.

Peering at the screen, you can tell it's displaying. Sadly, it's only bright enough to see for a brief moment.

I'm running into the D-Sub on the TV and have the CRT/LCD setting to display on both the laptop monitor and the TV. TV is a clear picture and the laptop I'm guessing from reading I've been doing is lacking the backlight.

History: No updates have been done in the timeframe that the monitor issues surfaced. No drivers changed, no programs installed (except vaguely possibly ExamDiff and one or two portable apps (http://portableapps.com/).

A week or two ago, I noticed the screen seemed to be shadowed in one area but the shadow seemed to go away if you brightened the screen all the way. Also, the screen seemed to be flickering, like lightbulbs sometimes do before blowing, that really quick, irritating flickering. This didn't usually last long, maybe 30 seconds at the most and it would settle down, ditto the shadowing.

Now, if I switch between CRT/LCD options or press then release the little screen switch near the hinge (the one that turns off the monitor if you close the lid), I tend to get a very quick proper display on the laptop monitor before it goes dark again with the displayed information impossible to read.

The issue is the same through a hibernate and resume, brief flashes of a clear screen and then only the vague outline can be seen.

OK I have a Toshiba Laptop or Notebook (whatever its called) and it has Windows Vista. I have wireless internet on it but like two months ago it crashed or something of that sort and I had to use the CD it came with to restore everything. Since then, every time I use the internet, which is Mozilla Fox, and if I load more than one page it gets a Network Timeout saying the site took to long to respond. This never happened to me before and I don't know what to do. I understand if it takes to long to respond but since the crash it does it way to often like every minute. What can I do? I already used the restore CD again but nothing. Is it because the Mozilla or is there something wrong with my computer. And also it is not the connection because I have perfect signal because the the router is just in the next room. Also if I play a game online like Maple Story or Combat Arms or even Call of Duty it will sometimes lose the connection. Please some one help!!

I bought this laptop back in September-ish of 2014. It runs perfectly fine still and always has but the image on my screen has been a problem since probably December of 2014. I know that seems ridiculous for me to just now be bringing it up but I honestly dont use it that often and only for pleasure so I always put it off and forgot about it.

The screen basically flickers blue in certain spots. Corners of windows, icons, links, etc. Its almost as if it was highlighted... I am not sure what it is. Sometimes it randomly goes away but then comes back within a few days.

If i do a screen grab of the blue flickering it doesnt appear in the jpg. So i took a picture with my cell phone. I uploaded that pic as well as my system specs to this thread.

Anyone please help lol....Bestbuy within 10 minutes told me it would cost me $200 for a new screen without even doing anything besides comestically looking at the screen and laptop. HP has been beyond awful in their "support"

This is the second time I've bought a new laptop in 2 weeks, because my old Dell's hard drive crashed.  The first replacement HP wouldn't connect to Wifi and Geek Squad couldn't help from the store, so just traded out for this new one, and that problem is solved.  I'm not sure if my Win 10 is 32 bit or 64 bit, BTW, and don't know if it matters for this issue.  I was on my laptop last night and the keyboard kept acting wonky--slow response and I'd have to hit a key a few times to get the letter/number to type at times.  Also, even though I hit the numlock key, it wouldn't stay locked.  Please tell me this is a quick driver reset.  I really don't want to go back to Best Buy again.

Hello, please help.

I have a laptop Dell Studio connected to Hitachi HDTV. The problem is that since at least 2 weeks ago when I connect the TV as a projector I am not being able to use the full recommended resolution wich is 1920x1080 because it won't fit my TV screen as it used to do.

Can you help figure out what is the exact problem now?

I seem to have broken my laptop. I was trying to hook it up to a tv with an HDMI cable. Following the advice on a website I went to "Adjust screen resolution" to try and find the tv as another device and enable that. However there was no other device, so I decided to play around a bit to see if I could get something to , this was my mistake. On one of the drop down menus under the resolution menu I managed to select something which created a second device in the box showing how many displays you have. I was pretty sure it wasn't the tv but thought I'd keep playing around and on one of the other drop down menus I selected something like "expand across both displays"...said soemthing like that, and then that's when the laptop went blank, still a backlight coming from it but nothing but black on screen. I restarted the laptop, the screen showed up the windows starting stuff then the desktop flickered on for barely a second then it went back to blank screen. I can only guess I've created an imaginary device with obviously no display and this is what it is showing now when it's blank.
Hope this makes sense to someone else, not sure it does to me, I really shouldn't mess about with technology.
With some advice from someone else I tried toggling with the fn f buttons, f5 was the only thing that did anything but it just toggles from a light black to a dark black, as it would be if it were turned off. I have tried starting it in safe mode but it doesn't give me the... Read more

A Windows "System Restore" run from within Safe Mode should sort that out for you. If you don't know how to get to it then you'll find it under Start -> All Programs -> Accessories -> System Tools -> System Restore. Choose the most recent restore point when everything was working fine.

Just as the title states, my new bought laptop is extremely weird. I am currently having 2 issues, and yes I've searched already(even though its hard to search when this is so confusing)
1. Whenever sound is played on the laptop, WITH and WITHOUT HEADPHONES/MIC plugged in, the left side laptop speaker lets out a static sound for a while, and if a sound on the laptop ends, it ends after like 3-5 seconds.
2. The buggiest issue I am having, is my computer refusing to be the "actual" screen. What I mean by this is that if I screen capture my desktop, the lower maybe 1/6th of the bottom and the right side is cut off, the resolution being weird.
I.E If i stream, and capture a window, and my mouse is in the middle ON MY SCREEN, the stream will show my mouse cursor to the right and a bit below of where it should be in the middle.

Please help me, as I've already tried my laptop brand's customer service GIGABYTE, and Reddit, but to no avail, and GIGABYTE takes forever for them to respond to tickets, and all they ask for is if i installed anything, etc when I got the laptop, when the issue was from the beginning.

What I have tried:
Disable/Enabling NVIDIA/INTEL HD graphics cards
System Reformat
Updating drivers
Change resolution

Thank you for your time, and I pray that someone has a solution for me... this is extremely annoying

Answer:Hard to explain issue with Laptop and screen

Hi there

If you have tried a system format the chances are almost 100% hardware related.
You will have to take it back to the seller for inspection.

The will either repair the laptop or credit you.

Best Regards

Hey all, I'm having a dilemma.

TLDR: my new Acer Aspire E 15 laptop has a messed up screen, should I get a refund and either finance a MacBook or find a used MacBook, or try to repair the Acer?

In mid march I bought a new laptop - an Acer Aspire E 15 from Amazon. A couple weeks ago I opened it and there was a big black spot on the screen with white lines coming from it. The laptop hadn't been dropped or even moved, I don't know what caused it. But reviews on amazon said other people had the same problem a month or two after buying the laptop.

I contacted amazon and they said I can return it for a refund. I contacted the seller and they said I could send it to them for repair. However, I use my laptop for work and couldn't go that long without it for them to fix it. When I contacted Acer about the warranty, they said that since the black spot is "finger shaped" (??) it's not covered under warranty. But it is so large that it's a real problem when trying to work, or even just generally use it.

So now I have to decide whether to get it repaired or get a refund and buy a new laptop. I'm leaning toward the latter. I really want a MacBook and was approved for financing from Apple.
However, my friend made the point that computers are kind of like cars in that they depreciate in value after you buy them. So is it really worth getting a new MacBook and financing it? Or should I look into getting a used one for cheaper? If I get a us... Read more

hi, i have an old compaq laptop running windows vista. just yesterday i was using it and i had to reboot it.. well when it booted back up and i signed in to my administrator acct..the screen turned to a solid yellow color. i can't see anything else on the screen besides the yellow. but when i sign into my kids acct, i can see the screen just fine. before all this happened, i was trying to uninstall the program called INTERNET DOWNLOAD MANAGER, which apparently had a bad key. i was trying to follow a youtube tutorial on removing the key from the .REG, and afterwards, i started having this problem. what could be causing this and how do i fix it.

Answer:yellow screen issue on compaq laptop

I'd try doing a system restore to see if that fixes it. Sounds like an issue with the registry entries you changed.

New laptop, booted for 1 and a half hours, now has a green line down the screen.

The retailer wants a screen shot by email before they will even issue an RMA No and agree to accept the laptop. I took a screenie with HypersnapDX but the green line doesn't show up.

They suggested a cell phone with bluetooth / usb - but the laptop doesn't have bluetooth and the cell doesn't come with a compatible cable.

Do I have any options here - software wise to enable me to grab a pic of the green line ?
