Wake from sleep issue

Question: Wake from sleep issue

New to tenforums. I work in the forestry field. We utilize Dell tablets running Windows 10 anniversary edition (10.0.14393 N/A Build 14393).These devices are used to collect data in the forest. We are collecting data for 6 to 8 hours at a time. The Dell tablets last this long if we set them to sleep mode in between actual data collection. Therefore, the tablets are constantly being put to sleep and woken from sleep (by pressing the power button). The tablets are set so that a login password is not needed when waking from sleep. But with the new anniversary edition we now have to swipe away the login screen even though a password is not required. You know the one... the one with the pretty photos. This is hugely annoying when you are trying to efficiently enter data. When you are being rained on or eaten by insects these photos, no matter how pretty, are not appreciated. I've tried to turn this "feature" off but no luck. Can anyone help? On a further note... can anyone explain the rationale behind the new login screen? There is a time and place to look at pretty photos and its not while we are working. Thanks in advance.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I have an issue with the sleep function. The computer does not awake from sleep. When I try to do it, it behaves as if it was waking, but it never ends and there is only a black screen; the mouse and keyboard are inoperative. The only thing possible to do is a hard reboot. When it boots, it shows a notice with a minute report (in the zip file) usually saying there was a blue screen, but I NEVER see any blue screen at all.

I know the power configuration is OK because I have always used the same scheme. A powercfg ?energy report shows several errors and warnings. They refer to USB and PCI (vendor 1002=ATI motherboard), but I don?t know how to repair them.

I downloaded the drivers downloader from and downloaded and installed the drivers. They are all Broadcom Corporation signed, the brand of my USB Bluetoth attachment. I rebooted after installing, as recommended. Run powercfg ?energy again and got the same report issues (in the zip file). I don?t think the processor utilization warnings to be very important because they are low and sporadic picks. It has been like this for some time now, so I don?t have a restore point. Can someone help and tell me what I can do so solve this issue, please?

Files uploaded in the attached zip:
. Windows warning after reboot
. Windows dump and xml files (2 = 1 each)
. Powercfg -energy report
I wanted to correct the thread title, but was unable to do it. Maybe someone else can do it.

Answer:No Wake From Sleep BlockedI have an issue with the sleep function. T

Quite confident it's a driver issue, it will be very difficult to troubleshoot from the one included dump file though as it's incomplete and inconclusive.

My PC is fairly new and I'm having problems with slow shutdowns/restarts and slow sleep/wakes. Recently it seems to fail waking altogether and restarts after a while instead. Usually during waking I just have a black screen for a long time before the reset/restart but sometimes I see the Windows log-in screen but it's unresponsive.
The problem predates my CPU undervolting and doesn't seem to change when I switch RAM settings back to Auto instead of XMP (I my RAM necessitates some kind of overclock in order to function at its rated speed).

Can anyone advise how to proceed? Thanks.

Hi all,

I just finished building my first computer yesterday. Everything seems to be working just great, except when I put my computer in sleep mode and try to wake it up.

Here is my issue: When I put my computer to sleep, it works fine. When I try to wake it up (by pressing power button or hitting key on keyboard), it powers on for a brief second and then shuts down. The only way to get it back on is by pressing the power button again, resetting the pc. I just want to know how to set it up so when i hit a key on my keyboard it will wake up with no issues. Side notes: I have disabled hybrid sleep mode and clicked the box to allow keyboard to wake computer.

Please help. Thank you.

I have a Logitech USB keyboard. Since I installed W7,I could wake the computer from sleep by pressing the space bar. About 3 days ago that function no longer works. I have to press the power button in order to wake the computer. Would like to go back to using the space bar, any ideas why and how to fix this? Thanks

Asus Zenbook ux301LA, i5 Haswell, Intel graphics HD4400, Win 8.1 x64, 2560x1440 display. It came with Win 8, I updated to 8.1

After wake from sleep the scaling is way off, everything is tiny... So I can't use sleep, must do a full shutdown and restart to get back to normal resolution.

Asus does not list any graphics drivers for 8.1, only 8. So I got a generic Intel HD graphics driver update from Intel but it didn't fix the issue.

The other strange thing is that it is time dependent. IOW if I wake it soon after I put it to sleep it restores to the correct resolution state. But if I wait longer it doesn't. I put it to sleep and woke it up multiple times and it seems like the change happens after it has been sleeping for about an hour... although I can't say for sure it is always exactly on that schedule. What could be changing in the system while asleep that would do this???

In a way this isn't a big deal since this thing boots up from full shutdown almost as fast as from sleep. But I had intended to use sleep without a password so I don't have to constantly enter that while home, but keep the password on full start up.

Answer:scaling issue after wake from sleep

OK, I just did a search and see several of my Asus Zenbook brethren and sistren have the same issue. I'll try the power saver solution posted here and see if that solves it for me.

I would like the keyboard to wake the pc from sleep, but not the mouse.
Keyboard is a Choppo mini connected via USB.
Mouse is a Microsoft 69J-00002 Wireless mouse via USB dongle
I used an elevated CMD prompt with line powercfg -devicedisablewake "HID-compliant mouse" to try and get the mouse to stop waking the pc from sleep. I was not successful. It is the only mouse listed in device manager.
I forget the command but I checked for all the available devices that can wake the computer in the CMD prompt, but no mouse was shown. Only what seemed to be the keyboard listed more than once.
I also checked all of the devices in device manager under the usb root hub and none are set to wake the computer from sleep.
Any help appreciated, thanks.

Using HP desktop with Windows 10. Latest Fall Creator Update installed.

After the latest update my machine wouldn't wake up after sleep mode. The screen is blank although I can hear "rumbling" in the background as if the hard drive were indeed on but I see nothing. I have to shut down manually and restart. The Power Setting remained on Balanced since I first purchased the computer last year and it always woke up. I tried changing the power options to "put the computer to sleep: Never" and that works. But obviously this is not a solution, just a delay, and I don't want to stay with this "never" option. I have also read that one can turn off Hibernation but again, to my mind, this not a preferable option to the existing problem.

Your help is greatly appreciated.

PS. Oh, and what does "Post a Poll" mean on this web page?

Answer:Sleep/Hibernation wake-up issue

There are many threads on this problem. Start by turning Off Fast Startup (this disables hibernation, by default). Turn On your preferred Sleep settings and test for a couple days. If this fixes it, you can turn off Hibernation in a command prompt (admin) to delete the hiberfil.sys taking up space by typing powercfg -h off then Enter. I know this means Shut Down vs Hibernation to save power but I've had this setting for a long time, as do many others, and no wake issues anymore.

Hey Guys, Just recently purchased a Y2P (i7 256gb) less than a week ago. The issue i am currently experiencing is when i wake the laptop from sleep, usually at least 15 mins of sleep, the laptop will come up but then the system is considerably laggy/slow & then becomes completely unresponsive so much to the point that it seems as if it freezes. I am not able to move the mouse (trackpad & usb mouse) & the keyboard buttons do not work/register anymore. Pressing the power button does not put the laptop back to sleep but i can still see everything on the screen from where i left off before closing the lid & the laptop goes into sleep mode. Only way i can recover from this issue is to do a hard reset by holding the power button until the machine powers off & then to boot it back up. Also, i have updated the BIOS & did all the windows updates from a clean install of Windows 8.1 (different from a factory reset) in order to avoid the Superfish vulnerability. All the drivers have been installed as well (confirmed by the Device Manager). Any other people experiencing the same problem & have any potential fix for this issue? Any help on this matter would be much appreciated.

Recently on my xps 13, I've been unable to wake it up after it has entered sleep mode unless I did a hard reset by holding down the power button. The issue is that after I tried to power it on again, it would just give out 8 beeps until I powered it off.
I have phoned Dell and it seems like an lcd/motherboard issue, however, I have managed to eventually boot it up by plugging it in and powering it on, or by pressing the "d" key during boot up. Right now, it is working perfectly once booted which makes me skeptical of any hardware issue?
Any suggestions? I have reinstalled the BIOS and any recent drivers?

I've got a number of 7480 Laptops.  I've been using 2 for testing.
Same BIOS version and settings, Same OS configuration, No dock attached. both have a power brick and Network Cable attached.
One laptop will wake with the press of any button on the keyboard, the other will only wake when I press the Power button.
I'm at a loss to explain why.

I dropped my T530 and started having these issues. Issue 1: Whenever I try to start it with the power cord plugged it does not start. I get till the Windows 7 logo and then the screen goes blank, hard disk activity stops and nothing else happens. I have left it alone for an hour but nothing happens. However if I unplug the power cable then it starts up without any problem. Issue 2: Sometimes the computer goes to sleep and will not wake when I press the power button. I tried all the buttons on the keyboard but nothing happens. In this case I have no option but to hold down the power button and do a reset. Please help me resolve these issues. Thanks.

Hello everyone Was any update pushed in the last two weeks which affected the wake up from sleep mode? I"m certain that in the last two weeks atleast once or twice I saw the shutdown screen saying installing an update. Ever since when I open the lid to resume from sleep state it takes a good 3-4 minutes for the screen/system to wake up...what gives? I haven't installed any major in my comp in the last month or so I'm not able to figure out why this is happening. Thank you in advance for any help you may be able to provide.

I got a brand new Lenove W520 - 4276-37UI put the thing to sleep put it in my backpack. and it wont wake up. Instead it just cycles through the boot process. My laptop also has random reboots.  I have found many other posts on this with no one solving the problem. They come with ideas of changing the bios, or ram.  The laptop is brand new so I sent it back to the lenovo repair shop, and got the message "Nothing is wrong" with it and sent it back. Lenovo what is wrong? Should I just return the computer?

I have a TP T530, 2359-4LU, that has Win 10 installed.  Originally had 4gb of ram. After upgrading to 6gb of ram, system ran fine. Went to seep mode when closing the laptop lid as normal, but when opening the lid, the device would not wake/resume, instead with a black screen the device would shut down.  I have read something about possibly too much voltage needed by the new ram and some devices can alter those settings in the bios, but I can't find that for my system. Any suggestions? Doug

Hopefully someone who knows more about power management than me can help out!

I bought a Satellite C50D-A-13N a few days ago and it has been fine.
However, I've had an issue with sleep mode a couple of times.

The laptop will go into sleep mode as expected (when the lid is shut or when I press the power button). However, when I press the power button to turn it back on, it comes to life for a few seconds - the screen is on and I can move the mouse and interact with stuff - but then goes straight back into sleep mode again after a few seconds. All I can do to get it to work is to shut it down completely by holding down the power button and restarting, which I REALLY hate doing.

The laptop is fully charged and happy plugged in or unplugged.

Has anyone experienced this issue in Windows 8.1 before?

On my notebook I use the same settings but when I close the lid notebook goes into sleep mode. When I open the lid notebook starts automatically without using power button.

In the last month or two, I have been experiencing issues when putting my T500 2081 (with dedicated graphics - currently using Energy savings mode, or integrated graphics) into sleep mode. In the first month or so,  the computer sometimes made a long sequence of beeps when I tried the wake the machine up, then computer then would restart and get stuck at a black screen. (A forceful shutdown was required to reboot the machine) (Power indicator on, sleep indicator off) Since then, I never got the beeps anymore, although it has progressed to just being stuck after the machine is awakened. (While the power indicator shows that the machine is on, the sleep (moon) indicator remains lit.)  A force shutdown was still required to reboot the machine. Now, it again has progressed to something totally different. When the computer awakes, the power will completely shut off for a second (it makes the same sound that is made when you forcefully shut down your computer),  then the computer turns on again, but gets stuck at a black screen. (Power indicator is on, sleep indicator off) Once again, a forceful shutdown was required to reboot the machine. If I were to look in the System event logs, it would see this whenever it freezes up after being awaken:"The last sleep transition was unsuccessful. This error could be caused if the system stopped responding, failed, or lost power during the sleep transition." Interestingly, the computer would only freeze ... Read more

Over the past several years there are many posts of users experiencing variations on this problem with X1 Carbon and X1 Yoga of various generations, including the latest ones (I provide a list below). That is, the systems often cannot come out of sleep mode in some way, shape, or form. I had this problem on my own brand-new X1 Carbon 5th Generation, right out of the box. Hopefully this will make the BIOS update process a bit easier.  The following steps address two common questions (Failed BIOS Update and the Windows message about improperly configured Secure Boot).  NOTE: After a successful BIOS update you will want to check additional items in the BIOS not directly covered in the steps below (e.g. Intel Virtualization.... the update disabled this for me.) U430 BIOS Update Procedure: 1. Download the BIOS update from Lenovo (it will be in .exe format... the program will install new BIOS).2. Shut down computer.3. Use the "Novo" button (tiny button on left side near Power button).4. Enter BIOS setup.5. Under "Security" select "Secure Boot" and choose "DISABLED" (this allows the BIOS update program to work properly).6. Under "Exit" select "Exit Saving Changes".7. Computer will reboot. Log in to Windows (it will have a message stating "Secure Boot not configured properly" this is expected).8. Run the Lenovo BIOS program (this will reboot the computer and you should see an update status screen). Once finished, the computer will reboot. Log in to Windows (the "Secure Boot" message will still be there) and then turn the computer OFF (I've found that turning off the computer from the log-in screen doesn't completely shut down the computer. If that's the case then hold the Power button until it does shut down).9. Use the "Novo" button and enter BIOS setup.10. Under "Security" make sure "Secure Boot" is ENABLED.11. Also under "Secur... I am new here. Hoping someone can help me out with this issue. I work in IT so am not a complete computer bonehead and am at my wits end with this.

My laptop is about 4 years old, it's a toshiba. For whatever reason, it started taking 5+ minutes to wake up from sleeping. If it sleeps for an hour, it's OK.. but if you leave it sleep all night and try to wake it up in the morning, it's quite cranky. After the 5+ minute wake up, it performs as normal. It was running Windows 7 Home 32 bit.

Troubleshooting steps that I have taken are as follows.

Reinstalled windows. Issue was resolved! but after about 2-3 weeks, issue came back. I thought maybe it was some type of windows update, so I reinstalled windows again and paid closer attention to the updates. Issue presented itself again after 2-3 weeks, and there were no updates immediately done prior to it starting.

I started to think maybe it was something related to my hard drive, so i performed laptop surgery and swapped out my original hard drive with a solid slate drive, and installed windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit (this laptop can support 64 bit so I figured why not upgrade.).

issue again was resolved for a few weeks, and now it's back to taking 5+ minutes to wake up again.

If you're turning the laptop on from scratch, it takes 10-15 seconds tops. if you're restarting, it's 10-15 seconds tops (man, I love SSD...)... if you're waking itup within the hour, its 1-2 seconds. But anything longer then that, 5+ minutes.

It ba... Read more

I have a Dell Optiplex 755 with WinXPPro SP3, 2GB RAM and an Intel Core 2 Duo E4600, and it is unreliable for Wake on LAN and Wake on Ring. I also wonder whether my Standby - Sleep - Suspend (S1 or S3) is working correctly.

When the PC is in Standby - Sleep - Suspend mode (S1 or S3), Wake on LAN and Wake on Ring work some of the time but not all of the time, and I'd like them to be 100% reliable.

These may be two different problems, but your advice will be appreciated. (Also, if I should post in a different forum, please advise.)

My Network Card is an Intel 82566DM-2 Gigabit Network Connection, and I recently upgraded its drivers using "generic" PROXP.exe from the Intel website, although this has not helped the problem. The specific driver file e1e5132.sys is now from 2009 -- it used to be from 2007. But, as I say, Wake on LAN from Standby was not and is still not reliable, both before and after the driver update.

In Settings .. Network Connections ... Local Area Connections ... Properties ... Configure ... Power Management, all the Wake on LAN options are checked ON:

- Wake on Magic Packet
- Wake on Magic Packet from Power Off State
- Wake on Link

More to above: Dell has suggested I must re-install Windows. I've never done that, and I realize I'd probably lose all my applications and data - no good. Seems to me that's like using an atomic bomb to kill a mosquito. And why should I assume that will work?

But is there a way to re-install -- or maybe fix -- Windows that leaves everything else safe?

FYI - About a month or so ago, I ran SFC (System File Checker) in repair mode, and that didn't help with this problem.

Any ideas?

I have win 7 x64 running on a custom built machine. Every now and then the machine freezes up when I try to wake it up from sleep (usually overnight). I have not made changes to make it hybernate. I experienced this again last night and am wondering if I could get some help analyzing this minidump as I don't know how to analyze it.

Any help will be appreciated.

Answer:win 7 won't wake up after sleep

Hello IndianinIA,

I wonder if that was caused by your network driver. Try uninstalling and reinstalling that driver, e1e6032e.sys, and make sure that you get the latest version.

I have a 4 yr old custom built desktop upgraded from Win 7 pro to Win 10 pro about 8 months ago. Up until two weeks ago the sleep/wake up has worked perfect. Now the unit will not wake from sleep. I have tried everything I have seen and nothing has worked. It has to be booted from sleep. I have now set sleep time to never and will shut the unit down at night rather than letting it go to sleep. Anybody have anything new that I could try. Is MS working on this???

Answer:will not wake from sleep

Win 10 pro installed on a Desktop computer. Like so many I have experienced the problem with the Sleep option not allowing the computer to Wake. Nothing I have tried has done anything to change this, so I decided to not use the Sleep and to just Shut Down when I am not using the computer. It seems that the Shut Down option does the same thing as Sleep. They both put the computer in a state where it will not Wake up. The only options are to hold the Power button until the computer completely shuts down, or to hit the reset button. Now when I do a normal Shut Down I am then holding the Power Button to completely Shut Down the computer. This is totally ridiculous. Is anyone working on a solution to these problems? I also have a Laptop with Win 10 installed that is doing the same thing with Sleep and Shut Down.

I've been running Windows 7 Ultimate for the better part of a year now. For about the last week or so now, my computer is going in to (what I assume is) sleep mode at the most inopportune moments. No amount of anything will wake the computer from its sleep - not the keyboard, mouse, ethernet activity (which should keep it from falling asleep in the first place) - only a hard reboot will bring my PC back to a state where I can use it.

Some of the things I've tried, so that people don't answer with "change your power plan settings" or some such thing. If it was that easy, I wouldn't be here asking for help. I'll restate that I've been using the same Win7 Ultimate install on the same PC for a year now, and it's only in the last week this has been happening.

Anyways, I have:
Verified all my power plan settings;
Disabled any screen saver;
This is an older desktop, not a laptop, so hibernate and hybrid sleep options are not even present. Nevertheless, I've followed this guide and this one for disabling both.
Used device manager to specify my keyboard, mouse, and ethernet card as "wake up" devices. Also used the command line to manually set these as "wake from any state", only to have them all not work.
Tried changing group policy and eliminating sleep/hibernate from the user group.
As I said, it's only been doing this for a week or so now. All my drivers are current. All my system updates are current. I haven't installed any new software. I was ... Read more

Hoping someone can help me with this.

I installed 7RC a couple of months ago. Since then whenever my pc sleeps I can not wake it up. It used to wake up fine in XP.

To get it going again I have to cold reboot or pull the plug. When it comes back up everything I was doing is still there, I just have to enter my password.

I think I have all the settings right but if someone could run me through everything that needs to be set I'd be really grateful.

Thanks in advance.

Hi Guys/Gals

Never use sleep function but last night instead of selecting shutdown hit sleep by mistake. Couldn't get system to wake from sleep and had to turn off by holding power button.

Today when switching system back on i get fan & case lights on , hdd and dvd activity. The keyboard is unresponsive (no lights) and monitor remains in stand by. Mouse gets power but doesn't wake pc.

Using reset or power button on case just restarts system to exact condition above.

Can't contact pc manufacturer til monday (pc 4 months old). Read quite a few other posts regarding vista sleep issues but haven't found anything that would seem to rectify this problem.

Any comments/tips gratefully recieved

Answer:Can't Wake PC From Sleep

Well I'm a beginner but I had a lesser important case than yours. I found you interupt a process of sleep if you try to wake it before about 5 seconds. Anyway, there are a couple of things you can try.

Unplug the power cord and plug it back in.

Pull out the wall socket thingy and put it back in.

Try doing something like booting into safe mode if you can.
The pc maybe still functioning but the monitor can't interact with it. Once you try to boot it, keep pressing F8 for about 10 seconds and then press enter. See if anything happens.

Could also be a shortcircut or something. Other people have had a similar problem.

I'm having problems with sleep mode on my new W500. I run Windows Vista Business 64 and everytime it goes into sleep mode (powered or on battery), it does not wake up. The fan starts but that's it. What's causing this?

Answer:Will not wake up from sleep

I did a fresh install today, complete reformat. I installed Windows Vista updates and Lenovo ones too. It still does the same thing. If the computer goes to sleep there is nothing else to do but to power it down by holding the power button for 10 seconds. This is frustrating.

Since installing SP1 my computer has been acting like a one year old. When I put it to sleep at night it keeps waking and then goes to sleep only to wake again. Left untouched it went through this cycle all night. Starts 20 seconds after I put it to sleep and stays on for 2 minutes and then goes to sleep for 20 seconds then wake for two minutes etc etc etc.I disconnected a flash drive that I had in a USB port.
I disabled "wake timers" under Sleep in Power Options
I disabled "allow this device to wake the computer" in the properties of the USB wireless mouse
In the properties for the network adapter under the "Advanced" tab I disabled the "Wake on Settings". That fixed the problem but then I couldn't wake my computer with Logmein and I think Orb is disabled.
Noticed when I went back that there's another tab "Power Control" for network adapter. I disabled "allow this device to wake the computer" and changed the Advanced tab "Wake on setting" to "OS controlled".
Now when I put it to sleep it seems to stay down. I'll update tomorrow if it misbehaves tonight.

Answer:Sleep Wake Sleep Wake

If you think it might be the network card, you can always open a cmd prompt and run powercfg -lastwake to see which device was logged as waking the machine last.

I try hitting the power button, nothing. I have to restart, it takes a long time to read the hd's in bios, then when it restarts there is no network connection, so I need to restart again.

no real pattern to this, sometimes I leave the machine on all night and no problems, other times just a couple hours and it happens.

I am also using a wireless mouse/kb if that makes a difference.

Hi guys, srry haven't been to tech support guy for awhile, in case if i miss any information, feel free to remind me
and i'll post it asap.

My laptop is about 2 years old (Acer Aspire 6920), one day like any normal day i was away from my laptop
and it went to sleep. The next time i was using it i tried to wake it up, it froze for around 10 mins, so i tried to
restart it and the next thing i knew it only starts up to "startup repair". Any attempts to access safe mode to
debug the computer has failed and since then the laptop has gone on a loop -->fail to repair in startup repair
--> restart computer again --> running startup repair. So i decided to reinstall the OS.

after reformatting and reinstalling windows 7 to my laptop though, i seem to encounter a similar error. The laptop
seems to work fine although whenever it goes to sleep and i try to wake it up, the screen froze and starts
flashing and the laptop wont work until you restart the computer again. I made my second attempt to reinstall
a new OS to the system and the same error occurred. My laptop has the latest bios and i tried various versions
of drivers for my graphics card (intel 965 chipset) and the problem continues to persist.

I was wondering if there's any program to debug this error or whether this is a hardware error that i can somehow detect.

There are many reports of S3 issues with MSI motherboards in general, as well as with win7 ati drivers. Open to any suggestions. Thanks

Hi, I was wondering if anybody has had this problem before?

My computer was put to sleep earlier on today, and I moved the mouse to turn it back on. The power light went from orange (sleep mode) to blue (powered on). Nothing was displayed on the machine. Bashed some buttons, nothing happened, so did a hard reboot.

The power button went red (which happens if I hard reboot it) then to blue but that's it. The fans and hard drive starts going, but no beeps, no POST, no display. Nothing.

Already, I've tried:

- Reseating my RAM sticks - nothing
- Unplugging the hard drive - bf actually broke a sata slot, although he says it was lose before. The pins are not straight now and I can't get the black slot back onto the mobo. Plugged hard drive into sata 2 slot, still get no reaction.

Anything else I can try?

Answer:Can't wake up from sleep.

So it sleeps no bother normally but it seems that if my htpc has woken it with a wol magic packet, it will not go back to sleep , ever unless manually put to sleep. Rebooting and automatic sleep works again. I recently reinstalled windows and have looked atvevery setting I can think of. Including unattended sleep timeoutvin gpedit which I have tried not config and set to one min. Powercfg shows nothing.

Answer:no sleep after wake on lan

I have been searching the internet and it seems that this situation is unique.

To clarify, sleep works fine but if the computer is woken with a magic packet from any source it does not then go back to sleep after inactivity. Even the monitor stays on.

In gpedit I have tried disabling allow applications to prevent sleep under power options with no change.

Anybody got any ideas, this is driving me crackers!

Hi manusdn7 and welcome

The windows memory test does not stress your memory enough to tell, plus it is run from within windows.

You need to run memtestx86

Download a copy of Memtest86 and burn the ISO to a CD using Iso Recorder or another ISO burning program. Boot from the CD, and leave it running for at least 5 or 6 passes.

Just remember that memtest errors can be either memory or bad motherboard slots so you may have to test memory one stick at a time, and the slots with known good memory.

Let us know if you need further assistance

Hi group,When my PC (HP Pavilion) goes into "idle" - when I'm not using it - it will not wake back up. I get no video, and sometimes my mouse will not wake up either. When I disconnect my power cord and reconnect the computer, I am able to boot up and things work. The computer works fine as long as I don't let it go to idle. For example, when I shut it down, it will boot up fine the next time. This just started happening recently after two updates: one from Norton, and the other from Quicken. I have no idea whether one of these caused the problem. I keep my PC well-maintained with all the latest updates. I have run the power troubleshooter, as well as the updates troubleshooter, and both detected no problems. Open to any ideas you may have,Thanks,Jeff

When i go into configure my network adapter, and go to the power management tab, if "allow the computer to turn of this device to save power" is unchecked, the app works, but when the computer comes back on it cant connect to the internet, if it is checked, the app doesnt work, but when the computer turns back on the internet works. Any ideas on how to solve this problem, so the internet will work when it wakes and the app will work, thanks!

Actually i dont think the internet is working with either setting. After short periods, like 5 minutes or less, the internet still works, but after longer periods, when i wake it the network has limited connectivity or doesnt work entirely.

Hi All,
My boss just bought a XPS 15 9550 last September.  There are a few cases each week that it does not wake up from sleep.  All drivers are up to date.  I did an online check with Dell for hardware check and all seems fine.
The computer goes into some state that the screen is black, the computer is running and there is nothing else but holding the power button down to restart it.

It's frustrating.

I have a new computer with Vista Home Basic. If I set it to "sleep" for short periods there is no problem. The power button light flashes and if I press the button the PC resumes where I left off. However if I leave it in sleep mode for a long time, eg overnight, the PC will not awake and I have to turn the mains power off and on and reboot. The PC suppliers say that with modern computers and programs sleep should not be used for long periods. Seems strange. If I want to continue in the morning where I left off in the evening what can I do? Should I use hybernate? How does that work?

Answer:Sleep - can't wake up!

It may be considered unwise to leave your PC on for long periods when unused. The PC is still `live` electrically and is using power, still `warm` and accessible. As a result, there is the risk of damage from electrical power `spikes`, perhaps fire could result and of course it is not particularly `green`.Whether there is a real problem with it not resuming after long periods of inactivity or whether this is a `feature` of the OS I have no idea. But, it would seem reasonable for it to resume unless there is some form of software problem; bad graphics drivers have been known to cause this kind of anomaly in XP.

It may be that one or more devices in your system is/are not compatible with sleep mode, hence those options are greyed out.

7 has been running perfectly since I installed it Jan. 2. Around Feb. 10 I noticed that I could not wake it from sleep, I would have to cut power, wait a bit, and then boot. When it boots however, it will prompt that it is "resuming windows" like it had been sleeping. All windows updates are installed and I have Panda Antivirus running along with Spybot (both show no infections or errors). I looked in the action center for errors and got the following message:

I think this is the problem, there were about 12 other listings of the error.

I'm not sure if it's just that my bios needs to be updated or what, so I'm just looking for any suggestions on what to do. (My bios hasn't been updated yet since the install of 7)

Some Specs:

MOBO is an ASUS P5WDG2 WS Professional
Dual Core 2.6ghz
6 gigs of RAM
8800GTS (driver version is aka 196.21
Creative SB Audigy 2 ZS (yeah, it's old)
[also I have a USB keyboard and a Bluetooth mouse that uses a USB dongle to connect]

Any help is appreciated!

hello i was creating a slide show to put on a dvd and when i was done i went to switch off my computer accidently hitting the sleep button and i hit the restart button and went to work came back but it was still acting like it was asleep my computer say no signal check power cable and such so i've unplugged everything and i have even tried the default analog monitor with no success i switched of my system from the back for about 30 seconds then powered it again and then it turns on switched itself off then turn't itself back on what is happening?

Edit: the mouse and keyboard have no power when i switch the computer on but i have lights in my machine which are working and so is the cd drive. I was wondering if this could be a power supply issue or maybe a motherboard issue.

Hello, a month or so ago I had issues with BSOD that were solved with the precious help of some members.
The thread is located here.

After some time with no problems I got a random BSOD when I woke the PC from sleep. I decided to overlook it and do nothing.

Today it happened again (I pressed Sleep and came back to a restarted PC telling me there was a BSOD so I don't know when exactly it happened) and I am uploading the relevant file.

Please take a look and tell me what you think.

Thank you

I have a rather weird problem since installing win 8. When the computer goes to sleep, my normal practice is to hit the esc key to wake it. Worked fine on win 7. Now, when the computer goes to sleep, I hit esc and the computer wakes up but only for about a second or two and then it goes back to sleep. I must wait until it goes to sleep completely (about 5-10 seconds) and after I hit esc again, it wakes up ok.

I have a gateway laptop running intel core i3-2310M.

Answer:must wake from sleep twice after win 8 upgrade from win 7

Try pressing other keys; clicking; fooling with trackpad. On my laptop, I sometimes have touch the power button briefly. This procedure doesn't make much sense though. If fast startup is enabled, then you might try disabling it: Fast Startup - Turn On or Off in Windows 8.

I have turned off the sleep & it still does it. I have had to turn off the laptop & restart it to get it awake.

Answer:Why can't I wake up my laptop once it goes to sleep?

One of the users in the forums have reported that the probable cause of that problem is the screen saver. Try disabling the screen saver and see if that stops the issue.

Hello everyone, I recently did a clean install of Windows 7 on my latop. It is a Pavilion G7 1320dx Laptop with Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit. I thought everything was working fine, but lately I've noticed that every time I close the laptop, and it goes to sleep, upon reopening the notebook, the screen either remains entirely black and I have to hold the power button to hard reset, or it boots to the "windows did not shutdown properly" screen and forces me to restart anyways, I've tried a few options already and I'm at wits end. I've updated the BIOS, tried a hard reset for 30 seconds with the battery removed, checked multiple drivers etc. If anyone can even possibly provide some insight on this issue I would greatly appreciate it!

Sleep is always a dodgy option in any version of Windows - looks as though Vista is continuing a long tradition. Shut it down, don't put it to sleep.

I do not know if it could helps you, but in your Control Panel=>Power Plan settings=>Modify Parameters=> Advanced can authorize kind of clock (Timer) to wake the computer.

It will go back to sleep normaly once task finished.

Answer:please help! computer won't wake up after sleep

My guess is that when you press the power button, it gets in sleep mode faster than you would expect, not turning really off.

Unplug the power cable, wait 3-4 seconds and plug the power cable back in.

Turn on your pc and try again to see what happens.

When I either close my lid or press the power button, my Vista laptop activates sleep mode. From which it WILL NOT wake up from sleep mode. I need to remove the battery and put in back in then restart the computer. I just had my laptop sent in and the motherboard was replaced because my network port was bent. It never happened before it went in but it does now.

Any ideas?

I have Windows 10 installed and after I leave it for a while, it goes to sleep. A large percentage of the time (though not always) I am not able to wake it.

I've gone through power management and told it NOT to turn off display and NOT to put the computer to sleep.

Still, it does, and can't be woken.

Why is it still sleeping even though I told it never to do so?

First, I'm new here and don't really know the routine of asking for help, but here I go. Also, I should have no problem understanding or doing "complicated computer stuff." lol.

So this problem has been going on since I first bought my laptop from Best Buy two years ago (December 2009). It's a Gateway NV5302. Let me know if you need anymore specs.

Whenever I put my laptop to sleep, I get the "Resuming Windows" screen then that goes away and it just stays black. It never fully wakes up. But when I hibernate, it wakes up perfectly. I hibernate my computer just about every night. And restart it like at least once a week.

My temporary solution to fix the sleep issue has been disabling it. After several hours of inactivity, it automatically hibernates instead of sleeping. So I'm sorta disguising the problem instead of fixing it.

I read this thread: Won't wake from sleep mode And that still hasn't helped me. So any suggestions?

Hello members,

I was wondering how to wake my laptop from sleep using my Bluetooth Logitech K810 keyboard.
Currently, through Device Manager, I do have "Allow this device to wake computer" checked through Power Management for both the keyboard itself and HID Keyboard Device.

What's odd is that I also have my Logitech MX Performance connected via 2.4Ghz and I have the "Allow this device to wake computer" unchecked, but only my mouse wakes my laptop from sleep.

So overall, I disabled my mouse from waking up my laptop and I have enabled my keyboard to wake my laptop from sleep. But the opposite occurs.

Any help will be greatly appreciated!

Answer:How do I Wake PC from Sleep using Keyboard

You wouldn't be able to have the Bluetooth keyboard wake the system because Windows needs to be running in order for the keyboard to work. Windows is what makes the connection using Bluetooth. So, if it is in Sleep, it wouldn't be able to wake it. The mouse has its own connection to the mouse without the need of software so it is like it is physically connected and therefor it would be able to wake it.

I hope this makes sense

Got my T450s just two days ago and have the following issues with sleep mode:  1. Fn + F4 does not activate sleep mode2. Manually selecting sleep mode from Start --> Power results in one of following:EITHER unable to wake from sleep mode. Pressing keyboard keys (incl Fn), using pointer, etc. none of these will work. Must execute hard shut down and re-start using power key in order to use the laptop. I know it is in sleep mode because the Thinkpad "i" blinks slowly and screen is darkOR computer screen is black, but Thinkpad "i" is fully lit (implying it isn't in sleep mode) however the computer doesn't react to any typing or Fn to bring it out of sleep mode Anyone else having these or similar issues? Please advise of any solutions. Have latest Windows 10 update and BIOS. Have fingerprint reader functionality but am not using it.  This is my first Lenovo laptop, bought it for work and many of my coworkers were interested to hear what I think about the product. So I got a brand new emachines last christmas. I've used it for everything. but for some reason it started taking forever to start-up. I have no idea what's wrong with it. when it starts it beeps once and brings up the start mode screen with safe mode and all that jazz. but its got purple or green squares all across the screen. I really need some kind of way to diagnose what the problem is. someone please help me.

Answer:pc won't start and when it does it won't wake up from sleep.

Covered by warranty...could be any number of things but...the visual problem connotes of something awry with the hardware (RAM or motherboard or video chip/card).
If it were my system, I'd use the warranty provisions, since the problem is not clear-cut and any tampering with components may void warranty.
That would be my perspective.

I hear the computer turn back on and the light is on, but the screen is still black. My mouse and keyboard are unresponsive (can't turn backlight on). I have to do a hard shut down. When it's back on, it's like it woke up from sleep mode, not a fresh restart.

After loading the Windows 10 update my X220 won't wake after going into sleep mode.  If I induce sleep mode with the function key I seem to be able to wake it, but if the machine goes to sleep on it's own it hangs showing the windows background. Nothing I do (function keys, enter key, mouse, power key) will bring up the log in page.   I've disabled the sleep timer for the machine when it's plugged in, but don't want to do so for it when it's on battery.   Are there any solutions from Lenovo or from Windows that you're aware of?  This problem did not exist when I ran Windows 7. Specs:  I'm running an i7 core at 2.7 Ghz with 8G of ram.  Less than half of the hard drive capacity is used.

Relatively minor issue, but annoying. I have my computer set to shut off my monitors (2xDell U2412M) after 20 minutes of inactivity. Which it does, except that then they immediately turn back on and only on the second 20 minute interval do they actually stay off.

Both are connected by DVI to a Radeon R9 270 video card. The same monitors and cables I was using on a previous system with a GeForce 550 Ti without this issue.

I've tried updating the Catalyst drivers, scouring the Catalyst and Windows settings looking for anything that might explain this. Initially the "Alternate DVI operation mode" was checked in the Catalyst drivers, so I undid that for both displays, no change. Not using GPU image scaling, monitors are at their native resolution, I'm dubious that it's some kind of program activity since they shut off and stay off the second time around and I haven't been using my computer in all that time. This is on an 8.1 system with all the latest patches as of today. Everything looks perfect, no graphical distortions or artifacts, and 1920x1200 is easily within the reach of DVI. So I've got nothing when it comes to explaining why this is happening, but maybe someone else out there does.

Answer:Monitor Wake After Sleep

Did you check in the monitor's menu if it has some of it's own power saving features. ? I had similar problems with one of my monitors, turning it off helped.

I bought my Lenovo Y560 back in July, and since then I have been experiencing a somewhat serious problem. Basically what happens is after I put my computer to sleep for a while and I wake it up I get either 2 of the following problems: 1- It freezes for a few secs and then I get the message "amd driver has crashed" (or something similar to that)2- I often start watching a video in FireFox and then I stop it before putting my computer to sleep. Now, once I turn it back on and I try to resume the video my FireFox freezes, I can still do things on the computer, but firefox won't close and, If I press ALT+F4 my computer freezes completly. I highly believe that my firefox has some sort of problem, and it's the one causing this, but it doesn't make much sense to me, since I have been using FF for ever in different systems and I have never experienced anything similar to this before. I am using Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit atm,  it's not the one that came by default, because I screwed up my Home Premium  after I intstalled linux, nevertheless everything else works perfectly aside from that. I never get bluescreens or anything like that. On a different topic I would like to know how could i use the code I have behind my laptop to get a free copy of windows Home Premium. Thx for your time, and have a great day.

Answer:Sleep/Wake up Problem

Try uninstalling FF and then see if the problem persists.(You have the option of deleting your FF profile or not, savedbookmarks, etc.)Use IE in the mean time.If no more problem, then re-install FF.Make sure your graphics driver is up to date.Use Magic Jellybean, or Activation Backup Restore toget the Windows key in use for easier activation in case you re-install.It is different than the key on your laptop. The programs can be found by searching the web.If it gets to the point where you do need to re-install,post back and a link can be found to download Windows 7.

I just upgraded the APU and motherboard of my HTPC and i had to format. I used to be able to wake it using 2 keyboards but now it isn't working anymore.
In the device manager, the option "allow this device to wake computer from sleep" is enabled

In power management, USB selective suspend is turned off.
My motherboard is MSI a75m-e45.

In BIOS advanced settings, in the "wake up event setup" options, there is an option called "wake up event by:"
It is currently set to "OS"

The second option is "BIOS" which unlocks the following options:
"wake up from S3 with USB device"
"wake up from S3/S4/S5 by PS/2 keyboard"

Wether i enable or disable these options, the computer still won't wake from sleep using any USB devices...

It is also impossible to wake the computer sending a magic packet with the correct MAC address. I used to be able to do that before the recent hardware change.

I use Windows 8.1, installed on a SSD
All drivers latest version

Answer:can't wake from sleep using keyboard or WOL

Also did you check the USB root hub in device manager right click it select power management Tab and uncheck this " Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power ". I found sometimes in Power management settings doesn't always work.

Looks like there are lots of these on this forum, but others are suggested to start their own thread, so here is mine.

I get a BSOD just about every time I try to wake my Win7 x64 HTPC up from sleep. I tried disabling hybrid sleep and various power-saving features in the BIOS (c1e, CnQ) to no avail. I see there's a sticky about large HDDs causing this type of issue, but I never get to see the actual BSOD screen STOP message because of the way my HDTV behaves. My system drive is a 1TB WD Green.

Can someone take a look at the minidumps?

Answer:BSOD on wake from sleep

The dump files seem to point to components of the Windows networking sub-system.
As such, the first thing to suspect is your networking drivers.
Please download the latest version of your networking drivers from the website of the manufacturer of the network device (NOT the PC Manufacturer, Windows Update, or the Update drivers feature of Device Manager).
Then uninstall the current version that's on your system - then install the freshly downloaded version.
Then monitor for further BSOD's

Since about 2 days ago, my PC gives me a BSOD after I resume from sleep, and I can't figure out how to read the dump, so can someone please explain what is wrong?

Answer:BSOD after wake from sleep

Both the crash dumps are pointing to NVIDIA High Definition Audio.

As you have onboard Realtek, you should not use ndidia audio. Let Realtek play the lead role there.
Uninstall All nvidia items in Control Panel > Programs and features3D Vision Control Driver
3D Vision Driver
Graphics Driver
HD Audio Driver
GeForce Experience
nvidia Update
(Are you using nvidia chipset drivers? If so, dont uninstall anything other than those are listed).
Now follow Drivers - Clean Left over Files after Uninstalling
Download 314.22 WHQL. While installing, Select Custom (Advanced) install. In the next page, follow this settings:
For more details about a trouble free display driver installation, follow it: NVIDIA Drivers - Avoid Problems

Now wait and observe how the computer works. Let us know for any further BSOD.

For some reason, my Vista machine has begun having problems waking from sleep mode. It will start up with all the lights and fans, but nothing is displayed on the monitor. At the same time, there is a high pitched noise, somewhat like a mosquito, that I only hear when it is in this state - I can tell when walking into the room that it is frozen up like this just by the noise...

The noise seems like it indicates something to do with hardware, but software is definitely involved as well. I have to shut if off manually, but when I start it back up it acts like it is "resuming" windows and takes a long time to do so - with problems and poor performance afterward. I have to restart again to get it back to normal.

It has only done this two or three times so far, but it has happened each of the last 2 days. It seems to have problems only when Vista Media Center tries to wake it up to record a show... Perhaps the noise is coming from the tuner?

Any help would be great,

Answer:Vista Won't Wake from Sleep

I have the exact same problem, just started beginning this week o last week, cant remember exactly when. Sleep have been working perfect until now. When the computer tries to wake up from sleep i also hear a sound that i only hear then. It sounds as if one of my fans is going 100% until i have to manually shut the computer down.

I have tried everything from System Restore to actually reformatting my C: drive ans reinstall windows completely, but i still have the same sleep problem. I just cant figure out whats the problem. I also upgraded my BIOS to no avail.

Somehow i want to relate this problem to me upgrading my Nvidia drivers, but i cant see how that could cause this problem. The fan that i think is spinning 100% sounds just like my GPU fan of my 8800GTS, when its in load in games. Anyone with some tips would be helpful.

I hear the computer turn back on and the light is on, but the screen is still black. My mouse and keyboard are unresponsive (can't turn backlight on). I have to do a hard shut down. When it's back on, it's like it woke up from sleep mode, not a fresh restart.

This just started happening today I think so I did a system restore, but the problem persists. The only thing I remember doing today was updating my ATI drivers.

It updated to windows 10 on it's own and ever since it will go to sleep sometimes and you can't wake it up.  I also can't use Mozilla Firefox for my browser any more.

I have upgraded to Windows 10. Any time my laptop goes to sleep, I cannot wake it up without restarting by holding the power button for 10 seconds. When it goes to sleep the power light stays on and you can hear the fan. The screen is off and does not wake up with touch of the windows touch button, touch pad, keyboard, or single press of the power button. I cannot remember if this started before or after I installed Windows 10. Things I have tried:Updating BIOSChanging power setting to turn off display "never" There have been similar issues reported for yoga tablets that have fixes, but those don't apply to my notebook or Windows 10 unfortunately. I've seen similar issue for yoga 2 pro, but no clear fixes.

Answer:Yoga 2 13 will not wake up from sleep

Is there anybody from Lenovo Staff who has a solution to this problem? I had this issue both before and after the upgrade from windows 8.1 to windows 10. My model is Yoga 2 13 (20344).
