Preferred Solution: computer black screen

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: computer black screen

Could be overheating or could be a power supply issue. Hopefully, you bought a QUALITY brand power supply to power that "hungry" GTX 1080.

What is the full make and model of the power supply? Also full computer specs would help as well.

I was being helped by Quads on the norton community. I know he helps out here too. Quads was helping me but I screwed up, thought I was helping to save time(yes, I know I saved you alot of time now) but I did not follow complete instructions.

This is what was done so far

OTL scan was run

adwcleaner was run

had adwcleaner delete all and reboot

ran combofix

when computer was rebooting it got stuck on the black screen for about an hour

Had to restart it again and when it did it restored to a previous date

This is where I screwed up

Since it was a previous date it seemed like nothing had taken place, no downloads on the desktop.

Ran the otl scan again

adwcleaner again, log looked the same as first time so I deleted all again

Ran combofix and rebooted and it gave me a log

That is where I am stuck, I dont know whether to leave these downloads on the computer, delete them

I dont think that Quads is going to help me anymore since I messed up, so I was wondering if anyone else could help. I just really want to finish what was started. The computer was stuck on the black screen this morning and finally got it restarted after about 5 times. But I do think there is some kind of virus. Still have adwcleaner and combofix downloaded on the computer. Dont know if I should delete them or what.

A friend of mine started having a problem with his old dual core computer where the computer seemed like it was booting up but the screen stayed black. This started when he got back from a weeks vacation and found out he lost power in his house. The power was back on when he got home but he could tell with clock being wrong, and neighbors telling him about the outage. He leaves his computer on all the time and when he got home he saw that it was off. When he booted up the only thing he could get was a screen with the XFX logo from the maker of his Geforce GTX 460 video card. Sometimes he wouldn't even get that, just a black screen.
He also connects his usb keyboard in the front and hit the connect to his computer and bent up the keyboard usb connector. I got him another keyboard and replaced the PSU thinking maybe with the power outage the PSU was effected. The computer seemed to boot up and work. Problem is it only worked for about a day (he played video games all day). That night he started with the problem again of black screen.
I thought maybe it was the motherboard then ( the system is an older dual core from 2007), so he purchased the following:

Gateway ModelX4870-UB318
SKU: 6835451
Windows 8 64-bit
Technical details: 3rd Gen Intel® Core? i5 processor; 8GB memory; 1TB hard drive

Re: Screen goes black. Bought new computer and installed video card and still screen

If a new computer begins to exhibit behavior from the old one, I'd remove the commonalities between the both.

You really should have tested the new computer with the onboard GPU and PSU first. Now you need to remove those two and put it back to the original config and test it.

It is also possible that the PSU isn't enough for the video card, if it is multirail and 450W, or low quality PSU. However, it seems more likely if that was the cause, the computer would shut off, not go to a black screen.

Hello, originally my problem is that my internet browsers (Internet explorer, firefox) can not display any kind of pages because of some kind of virus. Also I had some kind of fake Microsoft Security Essentials (MSE) asking me to download more fake AV's onto my computer but I knew well enough that it was fake so I close it. This also shows up in safe mode. MSE block me from opening things such as iexplorer.exe or sometimes it would say tskmanager is a virus and it wouldn't let me open anything. So eventually I google this up, and I read somewhere that told me to rename hotfix.exe to hotfix1.exe when I run %APPDATA% so the annoying MSE would stop showing up. It also told me to update my Malwarebyte which I still can not do because I still do not have access to the internet. By the way I am using another computer to type this. So again, I tried to do some more research to fix my internet problem and I found this site that told me to download KillGodzilla.exe and run it and reboot my computer, after that I should update my Malwarebyte but of course, I can't do that because after the WINDOWS loading screen, the blue log in screen doesn't show and displays a black screen which flickers sometimes, after a few minutes it would restart my computer. Also same thing for safe mode. Does anyone know what is going on? Did I screw up my computer to badly? Do I need to reset my BIOS? I am using Windows XP if that helps. I also hav ESET smart security on my computer but I can... Read more

I am thinking the computer is slow because the driver or video card or something is not working right.  My problem is.  I had this Lenovo computer for a couple of years now.  I just bought a 23" HP S2331a  flat screen monitor.  What do you need to know for me to be able to fix the problem I am having?  The information on the side of the tower is 3000 H210 57091130, Intel GMA3100 graphics.  I am not sure why the computer is doing what is it doing, but I hope you can help me more than HP. The black screen issue happens on startup.  I can see things on the screen up until the login screen attempts to come up and then the screen does not recognize a signal.  I bypass this currently by connecting the old crt screen on until I log in.  Then reconnect the HP screen and wahlah it works.  I can't change the resolution or anyhting like that...... Any thoughts on corredting this so I cna have a working monitor and not have to keep the old crt unit around on startup?Mark

I recently upgraded to Windows 10 from the taskbar on my desktop. The upgrade was successful and I was able to use my computer normally. Today, when I started my computer, a disk check was started. After a long time of being stuck at 10%, I force booted the computer off. Now, the computer boots past the Windows 10 logo and goes to a black screen with the cursor. This screen appears before the login screen does. I am able to move the mouse but that is the limit of my control. The mouse is also showing the little blue loading circle next to it blinking over and over.

hi all, a recent problem has occurred with my computer. whilst playing games, i can play for a few minutes, and then a black screen appears, with sound looping and the screen status colour changes from solid green to flickering green. This is XP Professional by the way.My system is as follows:P5N-E Sli MoboC2D E750 2.66ghz2.0 gb ramXFX 8800GTS 320mbThe games in which this occur are as follows:Team Fortress 2Grand Theft Auto: San AndreasThe Elder Scrolls IV: OblivionGuild WarsHowever, what is strikingly odd about this problem is that it only occurs about 80% of the time. Yesterday, I managed to play Guild Wars, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic 2, Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas and The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion absolutely perfectly.I have searched forums, and it seems this can be linked to overheating, but my temperature gauge on the front of the computer says I run at about 30 C most of the time, and the computer itself is not hot inside at all. All fans are spinning fine, no dust.I have heard other issues such as graphics card drivers, and i have tried 3 different drivers, all of which did not overcome this problem.Could it possibly be sound drivers? Or possibly something wrong with the motherboard? Thanks in advance.Mod Edit: Topic moved to more appropriate forum~ TMacK

Last night I downloaded a file from a Torrent site - Blackberry stuff (I'm pretty sure most or all was freeware stuff). I just noticed that that file has been removed. Kinda unfortunately because I did leave a comment on what happened to me and I asked if anyone else had the same issue. I'm guessing maybe they did because it is gone now.

I ran my AVG scan on it before opening it. It didn't find anything so I ran the executable. It locked up at one point after I started getting virus warnings from some new program (I did not write down what any of it was :-( ).

I had to do a hard shutdown. When it came up to my choices window, i.e. choose Safe Mode, Last Know, etc. I was unable to make any selections with my keyboard so it continued to boot Windows normally. The XP splash screen comes on and then the screen turns black with nothing further happening.

I can do a hard reboot but I can't get into Safe Mode because the keyboard isn't working and normal windows isn't working either.

Got any suggestions? Do I have some serious funk? Did some piece of hardware decide to stop functioning properly (power supply)?

I have been Googling this issue without any success. Sometimes it feels like you are the only one to ever have a particular issue.

Dell vostro 220

My computer was lagging and wasn't connecting to the internet properly, and then it froze so I shut it down. When I started it back up, the BIOS loaded but then went to a blank black screen with a mouse. I can move the mouse around. It won't load any further. I've tried all the safe modes and it does the same thing. And I tried cleaning all the dust off the computer. I've tried waiting at that screen for longer than 3 hours. It just stays there.

It's possible that it's a virus but I don't know. How can I solve this problem? Because I can't get into the computer to do a system restore. Please help, thank you!

The computer that I have, had an operating system, motherboard and restore CDs that were innerconnected and then I changed the motherboard and the restore CDs stopped working. I then bought a new version of XP. This Version was professional and the old version was home edition. I got another old computer and tried to get age of empires 2 to run with a lan with the first computer described. I then concluded that microsoft wont allow different versions of windows to inner connect on a lan caming connection. I then decided to put the old motherboard back in the computer so the restore CD's should work again, and I then installed the other version of windows on the other old computer. I deleted the hard-drive of the motherboard first computer, and then reinstalled the installation CDs, because it failed to boot the first time before the hard-drive deletion. It is still failing to boot, and I am trying to delete the hard-drive again, incase I deleted the other one; (Because there was some swapping and some master/slave slot determining that had been forgotten by me.) Now when I say it doesn't boot, what I mean is, it shows the screen that states my graphic card, then scans for hard-drive, then it says "Found" or whatever it says, and then when it tries to load up window, it freezes at a black screen.

I hope you find the problem before I pull my hair out.

Your malware is a variant of this infection. Backdoor Trojans, IRCBots and Infostealers are very dangerous because they provide a means of accessing a computer system that bypasses security mechanisms and steal sensitive information like passwords, personal and financial data which they send back to the hacker. Remote attackers use backdoor Trojans as part of an exploit to to gain unauthorized access to a computer and take control of it without your knowledge. Read the Danger: Remote Access Trojans. If your computer was used for online banking, has credit card information or other sensitive data on it, you should immediately disconnect from the Internet until your system is cleaned. All passwords should be changed immediately to include those used for banking, email, eBay, paypal and online forums. You should consider them to be compromised. They should be changed by using a different computer and not the infected one. If not, an attacker may get the new passwords and transaction information. Banking and credit card institutions should be notified of the possible security breach.Although the backdoor Trojan has been identified and may be removed, your PC has likely been compromised and there is no way to be sure the computer can ever be trusted again. Hiya to all who read this. My mom's computer screen will suddenly turn black. You can't do anything to bring it back except manual shut down. My Q is....monitor or video card? I believe I have my old video card that came with my computer that I could swap out to check, and I could always take over my monitor to check that also. Would there be anything else that may cause such a thing? Any advise or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Both good ideas.

Try swapping the monitor first, since you don't have to do as much work.

If you still have the problem, then swapping video cards would make sense.

Hey guys,

I've been having problems with my Dell Inspiron 6000 for a while now. It's a great computer when it works- which it rarely does.

I'm going to explain my problem:

--Basically when I start the computer it goes straight to black screen. Windows does not start-up.

--I've called the Dell people at least 6 times over the last few years, and they've talked me through reinstalling the operating system, which I do. After the operating system is reinstalled the computer usually works for a few weeks, then goes back to the black screen.

--I have a virus protector on the computer, so I don't think i'm just catching new virus' with every reinstallation.

--I'm really not sure what to do. Do I need a new motherboard, harddrive? I don't know, but it's odd because after I reinstall the operating system I do get a few weeks where it works properly... then it breaks down again.

Any advice would be great!

I have a Compaq Presario CQ62 w/ AMD Processor. I've had it for about 2 years now, recently the screen has not turned on, it is black. I have tried a "hard reset" and it actually worked for a while, but when I tried to turn it back on, same problem occurred, the "hard reset" does not work anymore. What are the possibles reasons for this problem?

Answer:Black Computer Screen

What do you mean by "not work as well"?

Well, if the external works fine, you LCD screen is shot, most likely a bad backlight. But if both you LCD and external don't work, that normally is a video card problem. Could also be another system fault.

I have recently bought a barbones kit from TigerDirect and got it all hooked up and running. Worked great for 2days then before I went to work today as I was logged into World Of Warcraft the screen went full orange then black. Computer stayed on just black screen and no response from the keyboard and mouse. So I decide ok its not going to come back on turn it off. Turn it back on fans kick on everything sounds like its going to get back up and going but.... Screen just stays black nothing is going to it. So I call up my buddy who knows a few things about computers and he says to go ahead and switch the ram around. I switch it around to vaious spots doesn't work. He says ok take the video card out and try another or use onboard video. The motherboard I have has an onboard so I take out the video card and try the onboard same thing nothing on the screen. By this time im running out of time before work so he says to unplug the unplug the power and the atx plugs in the mobo and let it sit while im at work. 4hours pass I come back home plug it all back in try again fail. So I think ok well lets see if this ram really does work throw it into my second computer here and it loads up just fine. So as I see it right now it is not the ram. so we are down to it either being the CPU, MOBO, Video Card or Power supply. I am in the process right now of taking the cmos out and from what I have read from my Mobo Manual I have it set to reset the cmos right now as well.

I will be surfing the web or playing a game when my computer just goes to a black screen like it is not communicating with my monitor anymore. I have tried a diffrent video card, diffrent monitor and diffrent cord and still get the same problem.

It appears that it does not shut off as my hard drive is still spinning and one time when it was at the blackscreen I heard a sound of my router conenction being dropped and re-established.

I am thinking it might be the ram as one time when I couldn't get it to boot back up after doing this I removed and re-seated the ram and it was fine. I am not sure though as it is pretty new ram so I thought I'd run my log here first.

I have an FIC K7MNF-64 motherboard and I tried to install it into the computer I have been putting together but something isn't working. The first time I put everything together and turned it on a giant e came on the monitor, I'm guessing it's for emachines since the motherboard I am using is used in them a lot. After the e came up there was nothing, just black. I pushed every button people have told me to push to bring up the BIOS screen but nothing. Ever since that first time of turning it on not even the e screen will show up. I can hear the computer booting up but I see nothing on the monitor. The monitor power button always flashes like its on standby and its not getting anything from the computer. Also there is a beeping noise that repeats and repeats when I turn the computer on. I looked up the BIOS beep codes but it didn't have anything for the beeping that I hear. The only thing I bought used is the motherboard. I was wondering if there is any configurations I have to do for the motherboard to get it to work. Any special installation CD to configure it to the cpu?? I just need to get this computer working since my laptop stopped working. Any help would be greatfully appreciated.

Hi everyone! I'm not sure if I am posting this in the correct forum, but I need your help!

I have an old (meaning I got it in 2000) Gateway Essential. It was working fine until Monday afternoon. My mom was using it and the screen went black. The monitor was still on and the power light on the tower was on, but it wasn't doing anything. When I restarted the computer, it brings up an error with my GoBack feature, saying that there could be a corrupt file in some software or a problem with the drive. It says to go through scandisk, which I do and it goes through and starts up fine. Then if I try running the anti-virus, log on to AOL to go on line, it will work for a few minutes, and then the same thing happens again. I restart it again and go through the whole process. I've run the defragger, uninstalled AOL and my Kodak Easyshare software and my Scanner Software, and am still having issues. I have a toshiba labtop M35X-S309, the computer is on, but the screen is black.  I have tried clicking the Fn and F5 to try to go through screen options, pushed on the little white (screen on and off) button, putting in the recovery CD, try to restart in safe mode, the safe mode screen won't even come on.  Does anyone have any other recommendations???

Answer:computer on screen black

If you tilt the screen at an angle or put a light to it, can you see anything on it?It is possible the blacklight is damaged.

hp computer about 1 year old windows 7 wouldnt power on yesterday tried day after powers on now but screen is black and wireless wont turn on

Answer:computer screen black

This wouldn't happen to be a few days after the warranty ran out would it???Seriously, from your brief description, this a number of things, but I would first think power supply. If this is still under warranty (or extended warranty), you should bring it in for warranty service while you still have it. If you are going to diagnose this and need our help, please include model and more details including any changed to hardware (upgraded video card, etc), recent changes to software, recent problems, and more details on what you see and hear (fans, lights, beeps, monitor lights, etc.You have to be a little bit crazy to keep you from going insane.

i've had a laptop for 8 year now (Evesham Voyager X5) and about 3 years back, knocked it off a table which messed up the screen so it wouldn?t light up. however everything else works fine on it and i?ve been hooking it up to an old block monitor, but i find it annoying now as i have lots of valuable software on the machine. i?m not too great on the hardware side of computing, however i did a bit of research today, watched some utube videos and found out it?s most likely either the inverter or backlight gone bust. the thing is though, as the computer so old, i can?t seem to find anything about its spec and i was wondering if it matter what make/model inverter i bought if i was to buy one too the computer's voltage and the lcd screen it has on it already?

Answer:Old computer and black screen!

I would say it's more likely screen/backlight.
If it was just the inverter, the screen would still work but be very dim (almost black).
Shine a torch to see if you can see anything.
When I knocked my 2 yr old laptop (3 months at time) off an 18" side table onto carpet, it actually cracked the screen fairly obviously.
New screen cost me £70 from amazon
They are bit cheaper now, but you might have trouble with an 8 yr old laptop.
Replacement was easy for me (I am an electronic engineer). There are loads of Youtube vids and of course mfrs Service and Maintenance Manual Guide pdfs to help.
If you are practical, it is certainly doable.
But if pennies allow, you might want to consider a new laptop and connect your old Hard Drive in a caddy via USB to transfer everything over.
Old applications won't transfer, but there are lots of Freeware sites for most things (unless you have something special)

I'm not sure what to try next--I'm not sure if its a software thing or a virus. Any and all help would be appreciated. Thank you!

Hi all,First post!  My Dad's Lenovo laptop goes to a black screen when starting up, so is unusable.I haven't seen it in the flesh yet but have started to research things for him and have found that 'black screen' shows up quite a lot for Windows 10 and Lenovo PCs! We were so impressed with my Dad's PC I've ended up with the same model myself:Lenovo YOGA 500 Convertible Laptop, Intel Core i7, 8GB RAM, 256GB SSD, 15.6" Touch Screen. Also labelled as: Yoga 500-15IBD Laptop (ideapad)  I see some people mentioning hardware failures and others device driver problems with the graphic card etc. but haven't read a definite cause/fix for this so far. I've just found this recent critical BIOS update for this PC which mentions the black screen problem:Software name: BDCN63WW Version 63[Important updates] Fix Win 10 lid close black screen issue. haven't seen this mentioned in the forums? Has anyone else used this?If the PC always boots to a black screen I'll obviously have trouble installing this! I'm hoping that it will boot in Safe Mode or I'm going to have some trouble installing it?! I don't know whether to install the BIOS update on my own machine which is running fine - I think I'll wait until I see my Dad's laptop first which will be in a few weeks. Has anyone had any experience of this BIOS update or other comments on this?Thanks. &nb... Read more

Answer:Yoga 500 'BLACK SCREEN' - BIOS update: "[Important updates] Fix Win 10 lid close black screen issue"

I'm still wondering about this... I've just updated the Lenovo Companion after seeing it mentioned in another thread. It looks like this s/w is supposed to scan the PC and recommend Lenovo updates - critical and nice to have ones. Initially the Companion was showing a critical update for Lenovo SHAREit and a recommended one for my BIOS. It says I'm currently on BDCN28WW and offered something like v61 and not the 63 I mentioned in my first post? After letting it update SHAREit and re-scanning the BIOS update is no longer being offered and still shows me on v28 ??? I'm not sure I trust this 'Companion' app!My laptop seems to be running fine so I don't want to break it updating the BIOS if it's not required. For all I know my Dad's broken one may be broken because it upgraded?! Does anyone else use/trust the Companion app?And has anyone else seen it change it's mind on recommended BIOS updates? Thanks.

I have had terrible problems with my computer recently, it freezed when I was on the internet or in a game and I had to force the computer to be restarted with the power button.

I have just fixed the problem with using an older driver for my video card.

But after I fixed the problem I got a new problem directly, now when playing games the screen goes black but the computer is still running.
When it goes black, my computer gives me this sound when it checks for a CD inside the CD-Drive and then it just stays black and I have to restart it with the power button.

I will soon take my computer to my computer support and get it troubleshooted, but is there anything I can do myself before I disconnect all cables and brings it to the repair dude?

NOTE: When the Screen goes black, it gives me the Standby message "Monitor goes to sleep", the screen works and is online, but it got no signal to the computer.

Answer:The screen goes black while the computer is still running.

Update drivers, clean cables ram pc etc and try other monitors to see if monitor is bad.

Hello there, to keep this post as short as possible heres the long story short...

I a fairly old computer, I got some upgraded parts for it a few weeks ago, here are the statistics of the computer, Old means its been there for a long time 1 year + and new is the stuff I got recently:

Pentium 4 3.4 Ghz Processor (Old)
2GB Corsair DD2 RAM (New)
NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GTS (New)
2x 250MB Hard Drives (New)
Windows XP
And the motherboard is old, and Im not sure what model sry...

The problem is sometimes when I am playing my games, the computer sometimes freezes, as in... I'm playing the game, and suddenly the game freezes and the screen goes black, and indicates theres "no signal" on the monitor dispite the computer still making running noises... also if I bang the computer by accident eg bumping into it, I also goes to a black screen... usally after restarting after this error I does not load, just gives multiple beeps so I have to leave it offline for about 10minutes before it loads again...

I doubt its overheating as I checked for blockage, dust on the fans, non-working fans etc, but they are all running fine... anyone know what wrong with my computer

when i turn the power switch on the lights come on on the motherboard. the computer will start, harddisk runs and fans are spinning. i dont have a speaker for beep noises. screen is just blank, no signal. tried setting the graphics card in another computer where it runs fine. tried 2 different harddisks, tried powering up without harddisks, tried reseating components and removing ram sticks to check. nothing works. i can afford a new mobo or cpu, but how do i know which of them is faulty? i suspect the motherboard. also tried setting the graphics card in another slot, no luck. normally on my other computer when i turn it on, the graphic card fan will run hard for a few secs then settle once entering bios or post or what it is u call it, when setting it in the bad computer it just runs hard until i shut it off again. any help is greatly appreciated. thanks.

I have a problem with my computer in the last few weeks where up to 4/5 times a day my computer crashes. There is a momentary freeze and the screen goes black and 'DVI No Signal' flashes up on my monitor. This has happened in Chrome, in games and when the computer has been idle so it is not an application issue. I am fairly certain that it's nothing to do with the monitor as if I press the Caps Lock button on the keyboard after the crash the light does not come on. Also if I am playing again the sound will freeze.
I am running Windows 10 Home on a Dell XPS 8700.

Memory: 16384MB RAM

Well actually there obviously must be a reason.First of all, I have Emachines E527, not a good computer, but enough to do my schoolwork and use Facebook. One day after school I get home and go on my computer and I get to use it probably for like 5-10 minutes and suddenly the screen turns black. At first I thought it really did turn off or something but then I noticed if I look very closely, I can see the things on my desktop.. I decided to shut my computer down and then turn it back on. When I turned the computer back on, I could see all the startup things (computer logo, starting windows etc.) very clearly, as I did usually when I turned my computer on. When it asked for my password, the screen was almost black again..I started looking that maybe I had turned brightness down or something, but everything was maximum (even my battery settings were set on high performance). I could see the stuff better when I was using a torch (I looked stupid). I discovered a key combination Fn+F6.. It turned my screen on for 1 sec and then turned it off.. I tried it like a hundred times and then suddenly it turned my screen back to normal.. but EVERYTIME I turn my computer back on, the screen goes black and I have to press Fn and then f6 twice to make it go back to normal.. And sometimes it turns the screen off randomly again when I'm using the computer (it also did while I was writing this paragraph).Any ideas what could be wrong? What could I do to make it go away? Could it get more fre... Read more

First full build and I'm pretty confident that I put it together correctly, but I'm having problems. I've done upgrades on different systems from hardware to software, but this is my first full build. You'll have to excuse my ignorance on some of the terms since this is my first build. I know enough to get by. lol

I have a
Antec 900 tower
Intel Q9400 CPU
Zalman heatsink and fan
4 Gig OCZ Reaper mem
Corsair tx750 (overkill but will be upgrading throughout the years)
Radeon HD4670

Moment of truth - turns on and everything looks good EXCEPT my screen on my computer is black. The light just stays orange on my monitor like normal in sleep mode. Doesn't even flicker green. All the fans are running except the CPUs fan, but I don't know if it only kicks on when the CPU reaches a certain temp or not.

I've checked and rechecked the connections. I've looked and cant see any secondary power connection for my setup neither on the board or Graphics card. I've tried resetting CMOS. I hear a faint beep when I just power it on but thats it. I'm running bare minimum and have swapped the sticks of ram. No Change.

I don't have the ability to swap hardware since all my other computers are ancient and aren't compatible hardware wise.

I'm out of ideas and need some help with this.

Thanks in advance for your guys help!

Answer:New Computer build - nothing/black on screen

If your CPU fan isn't running then it might not be connected to the MB or the fan is faulty.

You may have fried your CPU.

Does this MB have onboard video? If it does then connect to that one first.

Alright so here's everything i have
- evea 600b power supply.
- msi 970a-g43 plus mother board
-AMD fx 8350 CPU
- 1 tb hard drive
- 2 Kingston hyper fury ram
-geoforce 1060 armor 3g graphics card

So I plugged everything in to my monitor and I'm getting a black screen and I can't even get into bios menu.

Everything turns on, all fans spin, led come on, and I can hear the hard drive work. So that's telling me the power supply works

I already tried taking out the mother board battery waiting a long time and reinstalling, and also tried to jump the pins to restart the mother board, but still a black screen.

I have tried a single ram stick and both ram sticks. Still a black screen. I first installed the ram how the manual told me, then I tried moving the ram to every position.. and every position that's not correct I get a BEEP from the speaker.

When I have the graphics card connected to the motherboard, but NO power going to the graphics card I get an ERROR message on the SCREEN saying I need to plug power to the graphics card. When I do PLUG power to the graphics card, my screen goes black

So after all that I believe my mother board is fine due to the beeps, and also the error message when I don't plug in power to the graphics card. So it seems the mother board recognizes that I have the graphic card installed but no power.

Do you think it could be a DOA graphics card?

I just recently bought a new 64gb SSD and installed it into my computer as the case manufacturer said in the instructions. I did everything as planned, then plugged my computer back in, to turn it on and get a black screen. No bios or anything. I tried plugging it into my alternate display to see if that was the issue, and it was not the issue. I later tried booting the computer without the SSD plugged in which yeilded the same result as before. I hope to get help soon so i can get my rig running and install my OS onto it.

*NOTE: if this post is in the incorrect section of the forums, i ask that a moderator move it to the section that is right.

Answer:Computer getting black screen after installing new SSD.

Check and make sure you didn't accidentally unplug anything, also try to reset your BIOS/CMOS.

Ensure your monitor has power, try using different monitors, do the lights on your keyboard flash on then off? Do you get sound from your speakers after waiting awhile to determine if the OS has loaded?

windows starts and then the screen slowly goes black but if you tilt the computer you can still see very faint images

Answer:computer starts and then the screen goes black

Whenever you can move or vibrate a computer to change what happens it is a hardware fault. Possibly a screen fault, or backlight. A connection fault is always possible but the effects are usually quite sudden.EDIT:Another thought. It could simply be that tilting enables you to see something that is very dim rather than it being an intermittent fault (which is what I had in mind above). In which case there are quite a lot of possibilities for a dim screen, mostly along the lines suggested. Go to BIOS then watch the screen for a while and see if it fades there. If so it is definitely a hardware fault - fairly certain anyhow.Always pop back and let us know the outcome - thanksmessage edited by Derek

I'm using Vista home premium and everything was working fine up until the other day. My computer froze up and I shut it down to restart. Upon restarting, I was given the option to start windows normally or in safe mode. I selected to start up windows. After that all I got was a black screen. The computer is still running, I can hear the fans and the ligts are on.

I have been looking for a solution to this problem and would really like to fix it myself. I have tried all of the F-menu options, but all I get is the black screen. Vista came pre installed on my computer, so I don't have the Vista cd/dvd.

Please help me if you can.

May I ask you what ?computer ?you? have?
Why you don?t post this important information?

Can you boot in safe mode? Maybe a driver or virus has something muddled up in Windows registry and so the computer can?t boot properly anymore.

In worst case you have to reinstall Windows using Toshiba recovery disk. :(

recently (the last week or so) my computer will randomly lock up and the screen turns black. I have had the computer for roughly 1-1.5 years and it has been working well up until now. I am not particularly great with technical stuff, but I'm not completely ignorant either. When I open up the case, all the fans appear to be functioning, and the temperature usually doesn't go above 40 degrees Celsius, so I don't think it's an overheating issue. I check the event viewer in Admin Tools after every lock up, but there isn't anything there. The lock ups occur kind of ranomly. At first, I thought the issue might have something to do with World of Warcraft, since lock ups often occur while I'm playing. However, it does lock up occasionally when I am simply browsing forums or whatnot. Also, the first time my computer locked up and reboot, it was running slugishly and when I checked, it said I only had 768 MB of RAM. I have 2 512 sticks and one 256 stick. This is when I popped out the RAM, cleaned it, and put it back. After rebooting again, my computer read it as 1.25 GB. I'm not sure if the issue could be RAM related or if that is just a coincidence. Any help is appreciated, thanks!

I have started having problems booting up my computer, the screen stays off. I have to unplug my computer and press the off button but this does not always work sometimes it takes a few tries. Could there be a problem with my RAM?

Answer:Computer does not always boot, black screen.

Firstly: Don't unplug your PC, you could cause irreparable damage.
Use the Reset button.
This happens to my old plodder (8yo) every now and again, but not that often. By pure chance it happened this morning. My guess is that, for some reason, the Hard Drive did not start, but to be honest I have no idea.
What I have done: I have no real intention of buying a replacement but I have started saving.
I have set in hand a Backup System. I upgraded it from XP to W7 18 months ago and that has a Backup Facility built in. I bought a WD 'My Passport' and backup every Sunday Night. I also installed Nero 'Backitup' which I use to backup my .pst File and Accounts, every day.
With luck, if everything goes tits up, I shall be able to resume normal service, within about 10 days, by using a Mates PC to order a replacement, on-Line.

Our computer was working fine. We were having trouble with the wireless mice on another computer so we tried some troubleshooting with the laptop. I got 2 PCs both are exactly the same in spect and make, just over a year old. one of them was making a westling noise i opened it and took the fan of the processor off to check the model and get a new fan because it was the cause of the noise. i took the processor out with the fan and then placed the processor and the fan back on the mother board (ofcourse made sure that the pins of the processor properly sets in and doesnt bend). when i started the computer i get a black screen i dont get nothing on the screen no message no grey window nothing just as if the monitor is off. but yet the hard drive spins and everything, i cant get to the bios it does not show anything, i thought it is the graphic card. i opened the other pc which as i said is identical and placed the graphic card of that pc and still the same problem i then tested the graphic card of the first machine in the second one it is perfictly working so i know it is not the graphic card. i then though it may be the processor and i carefully took out the processor of the second pc and placed it in the first one still the same problem. i then put back the processor in the second machine and realised that it is not working too. now both of my machines are not working they both show a black screen as if it is off and show nothing, but the hard drive is spinning. can someone help me plz.

well meanwhile i should deserve the black-screen-baztard or at least bluescreen-hero 3d game crashing title.

just by curiosity.. what happens if you try to boot your computer without a keyboard? XD this helped for me last night.. my keyboard is apparently broken and that made me see only a black screen although everything is running fine..

will have to tell a mate to organize/buy a keyboard for me.. as i work till 10 o clock today :F

if it doesnt help.. try disconnecting all the possible hardware devices which are not essentially needed for getting into the bios screen.

already tried to reset your bios by taking out the mobo-battery for about 30 seconds? (with no power plugged into the computer, naturally.)

please try to write in paragraphs as it is very unappetizing to read 10 lines of plain text.

I was attempting to clean my computer screen today by wiping it off with a tissue paper but I accidently wiped over a bunch of buttons on my screen, and I have no idea what the function of those is lol.
My PC screen went black, and I don't know to get things back to normal. I still hear the computers noise so I know it's on. I already tried to turn off the PC and unplug it, but that didn't fix the problem. When I start it up again the screen remains black.

I've also managed to lose the manual. Any idea's? here's a pic FYI

Answer:My computer suddenly has a black screen?

Hi, I have recently built a new computer. This is the first time doing it so I'm not 100% sure if I have connected all cables correctly (though I believe i have).

When I am trying to start the computer, all fans starts but nothing happens at the screen. After a while there comes a message on the monitor that displays there is no signal (there probably never was any either). What is wrong and what should I do. I appreciate all help I can get.

Hello,I turned off my computer and when I turned it back on the computer is working (I can hear it) but, the screen is black. The cap lock key is flashing. How can I fix this without clearing the memory on the computer? I got it only 10 months ago.

Answer:Black screen, computer still running

Hi, The fact that the caps lock led is blinking may indicate that this is a hardware issue, but you could try the following. Shutdown the notebook. Unplug the AC Adapter and then remove the battery ( assuming your Model has a removable battery ).  Hold  down the Power button for 30 seconds.  Plug in the AC Adapter ( leave the battery out for the moment ) and see if the notebook will start correctly. If it doesn't and as you mention your notebook is only 10 months old, it should still under warranty, so contact HP and arrange for it to be repaired - If needed, you can check your warranty status Here. If you live in the US, contact HP Here. If you are in another part of the world, start Here. Regards, DP-K

This problem only started a few days ago.

My computer started up to a black screen, and after a few seconds my monitor went to sleep. No cursor, nothing. I had do a hard reboot to get it to work properly. Yesterday, it happened twice. I hit Google to see what I could find but nothing worked. Here's what I found:

1. Some threads suggested it could be a problem with the video card or some other driver. My video card driver is up to date, my most recent driver installation was my printer, however, that was done over a week ago, and the black screen problem didn't occur then.

2. Startup programs, I checked to see if it might be something attempting to load, but it was just the update service for my printer, and the digital imaging software for my printer(both disabled, as of right now). It was neither of these as the problem occurred again.

3. I ran malware bytes and it came back clean, no malware detected. Running Norton to see if it could find anything but I highly doubt it.

The black screen only happens some of the time. When I make it to the login screen, my machine runs normally, nothing strange occurs, I can use my machine as if there isn't a problem.

My monitor is fairly new, closer to a year old.

I ran chkdsk /f and it was completed, no errors or interruptions.

I really don't want to replace my hard drive, I have a back up solution in place so I'm not worried about my files. My real problem is, if I have to re-install windows I need a new CD key for Windows 7... Read more

Answer:Computer Sometimes Starts Up with A Black Screen

Hello and welcome Annabelle looks like a similar problem I had a while ago with my Sandy Bridge build - tried all the usual stuff like you have and in the end it was solved by just reseating the GPU card.

Try that first along with most of the major cables power and board connectors and have a good general clean out inside the case.
Edit: Don't forget the static electricity rules - ground yourself on the case while it is plugged in before diving inside the case and then unplug the thing before you dos so.

The chkdsk (you could try the /r switch with that) I see you have run but try this as well if you haven't already

SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker
Disk Check < if necessary include the /f and /r in the command line as per Option2
Run these in safe mode and the sfc often best run for two to three runs

then these if necessary
SUPERAntiSpyware | Remove Malware | Remove Spyware - AntiMalware, AntiSpyware, AntiAdware!
Malwarebytes | Malwarebytes Anti-Malware Premium
AdwCleaner Download
ADW download from bleeping computer delete any rubbish found with the malware scans
(NB If you are running Kaspersky as the main AV then it might need disabling it when trying ADW because it does not like it at times)

The Norton I am not a fan off so I'd leave that and as for the 7 key it really is worth a phone call to Microsoft and explain your predicament and as a general rule they are normally happy to let you use the key again.

When i turn on my computer, it just goes to a black screen, no sign of the bio's screen or windows xp screen. No flickering or anything, no indication its connected except for the fact when i unplug the monitor the screen saying there is no cable on the monitor shows up. i tried a different monitor on it, same thing happens. It is connected to the on-board graphics card. I tried removing the hard drive to see if that was the problem, no luck. Shouldn't it at least show the bios screen? I tried removing the battery without any luck hoping it would reset any bios, I tried removing the ram, no luck. Any ideas on what is wrong with it?

I have had this problem for about a year. I have taken my computer to a computer repair place in town but they were unable to fix it. When I play certain games (WarcraftIII,Rome Total War,NWN,ect.), the monitor will all of a sudden go black. This can happen when I first start the game, or an hour or more into it. Turning the monitor off an on doesn't fix anything, and the OS is off as far as I know(no sound, no way to get anything but the black screen) but the power supply is still running.
Some suggestions I have heard are:
A monitor problem(which I don't think it is because I have switched monitors and it still happens),
A heating problem (all the fans are working as far as I know and the system temp is around 23 and cpu 44),
Or a power supply issue (this is the most likely, other than maybe my graphics card just being faulty. I have a 350W, (my brother has the exact same computer as me except for a 300W power supply [his also has the same problem but much less frequent]) and it checks out okay exept that the +12 V is close to the low limit (something like 11.2 when the limits like 11.0).
I don't know what components take +12V so I haven't been able to test that aspect yet.

Here are my system specs:
AMD 2000+ XP
512 DDR DIMM Ram
5600 Nvidia GeForce Ultra AGP (Latest Drivers Installed)

My computer is showing black screen with cursor blinking. I guess system is not booting. Problem is my cd rom is not working . But i have protable DVD writer available with me. How do i format my computer. As i wish to format it now.Pls advice.

Answer:My computer is showing black screen

Boot into Safe Mode, uninstall the current drivers and try using drivers that were released previously. If this doesn't work, uninstall the drivers totally, boot into Safe Mode with Networking and see if Microsoft offers drivers for the card during Windows Update. You'll see it on the left after it finishes searching to see what updates you need. It'll say something like "Hardware Optional".

I am having problems with my computer which i cannot solve myself so i will describe my problem and i hope someone will help me.
The problem is that, when working on the computer (either playing World of Warcraft or watching movies, facebook, youtube that kinda stuff) sometimes my screen freezes while the mouse cursor is still moving for another 5 secs and the sound is still on, then after those 5 secs the mouse stops and the sound stops either and i get black screen on my monitor saying "No Signal" and i have to restart the computer so it goes back to work again. I tried OCCT tests for the CPU and my VGA but i get no errors and normal temperatures. I tried MemTest on my RAM and the first time i did it the computer crashed the same way it does after 30 mins of the test... the next day i started the test again and it ran smoothly for couple of hours with no errors...
So if anyone can help me with this problem I would be very grateful. I dunno for sure if its the RAM that is cosing the problems or anything else like the graphic card or something else...
My computer configuration is:
Motherboard: Asus M4N98TD EVO
CPU: AMD Athlon II X2 260 3.2GHz
VGA: Asus EAH5750 Formula 1GB DDR5
RAM: 2x2GB DDR3 1333Mhz Kingston
I'm looking forward to hearing from you.

Answer:Computer freeze then Black screen

when testing the ram did you run memtest with one stick in at a time?

what is the make model and wattage of your power supply? if youdo not open the case and have a look at the label on the psu.

I have an laptop HP Pavilion ze5600 with Windows XP home edition. I received an error message regarding Memory dumping while I was on line answering e-mail. The message did not stay long enough for me to write down error codes but did say if this was the first time this happend to restart the computer which I did. Worked for a couple of minutes and then same message. When tried to restart computer this time, just black screen. No cursor, no message, did not move to any further screen. I know this sounds ridiculous but if the computer sits over night, I am able for one time to hit F8 and get safe mode and other options. First time I was able to get in I went to Last Known Good Configuration and did a system restore but computer froze at tail end, so bad date choice. I did try numerous times to get in again, but could not. Second time I got in I backed up information I needed using Roxio but had to go to work, get kids to school etc so after inserting second CD, I didn't watch what happened and came back to a screen discussing memory dumping and then could not get into my computer. This morning able to get to Last Known Configuration but then computer froze at window showing Window logo, am going to try and get into to Safe Mode tommorrow and try to run virus software. Turn on Acer computer and only black screen comes up Del: Enter Setup F12: Boot MenuHave tried both, but nothing happens

Answer:acer computer only comes up with black screen

Sounds like a hardware problem - guessing the motherboard or processor or both are dying. But, possibly something else. If this is a desktop machine, open the case and disconnect hard drive(s) and optical drives and try booting again. If still the same, try to locate the clear cmos jumper on the motherboard (usually labelled jbat or jcmos or cmos reset). Usually 3 pins with 2 covered. Remove cover and cover the 2 currently uncovered then put it back as was and try booting again. If no good again, motherboard (or processor or both) likely culprit - you'd be best getting professional advice if you want to repair the machine (could also be power supply). If its a laptop, try removing the battery and booting with just mains power. Also if no good, and you can find where the hard drive is, try removing that and booting again, see if it gets any further (if it does, suggests hard drive is problem). resetting cmos is more problematical in a laptop - really need a manual to find out where/how to do this.

When trying to start up my computer it starts up normally but after the windows XP load screen the mouse disappears and the screen remains black and I am not able to use the mouse and keyboard. I turn it off and try again with the last known configuration and it does the same thing. I opened the tower up to see if anything was loose but everything was secure. I also tried a different monitor but it still doesn't start. I thought it might be the power supply but that worked fine. I have done all that i can do and would like some help.

This is quite normal for the system to act in this manner.
Just leave it for about 2 minutes, and you will see the "Windows is Starting Up...Please wait..."; then, the "Welcome" screen with your mouse cursor, and eventually your desktop will appear.

Hope this helps.

I'm working on two different computers today. The one here, is my son's computer. This is a windows XP with only 248 MB RAM and 40GB space, with only 12.2 GB space left to it. That is probably the whole problem--we need more RAM and more storage. Right now, we don't have a whole lot of money to spend on computers, so I'm wondering if I should do a whole reformat (if that is the correct term for wiping everything out and reinstalling everything from the cd that came with the computer)
Here is what I have done:
Ran PC Doctor--everything is fine
Updated and ran Avast! antivirus, Adaware, Spybot, ccleaner

Did the msconfig startup item list, turning off a bunch of stuff.
Ran Disc defrag, checkdisk, compressed old files
uninstalled many unused programs and am starting to load some other stuff on a pen drive and cds
There was one virus in the av scan, a win32:CTX, which was in a system restore file. That was quarantined.
We have owned this computer from the start, it was at one time the whole family's computer, so various levels of games and school programs (we homeschool) have been loaded and eventually removed via add/remove programs. Eventually it became a shared computer for my sons' school and games, and then only one son's computer, for school and games. I thought I read somewhere that despite being removed, lots of programs still have left "bits and pieces" on the 'puter, and that eventually I would have to do a &qu... Read more

Answer:Slow Computer, Getting Black Screen

Doing what you describe here is called a "clean install", and while there may be other solutions to your problem, a clean install may be the easiest. Simply back up all the important files to a CD-R/RW or a USB flash drive (don't back up any programs though, they won't work) and then put the Windows CD into the drive and reboot. Follow the onscreen directions to reinstall the operating system, make sure you have the Windows licence key BEFORE you do this though, or the install won't work.

About the licence thing, a licence means that you have the permission to put the program on ONE computer at any ONE time per licence. Uninstall the program on the computer, and you get your licence back.

Just a little backround on my laptop.  It's about six years old, and has 8 gig of RAM and optional ATI Radeon graphics.  It has been used heavily as I do electronic medical records with it as well as personal stuff.  It's not turned off very often; I just keep it in hibernation. One day a couple of weeks ago I had several tabs open in Chrome, one of them being SiriusXM streaming.  My back was turned as I was with a patient and all of a sudden I heard a buzz coming from the audio that lasted a few seconds, then no sound.  When I finally looked at the computer, the screen was black, but everything else was running (leds, hard drive, fan, etc). I pulled the AC power and the battery, restarted Windows in safe mode, and had a display.  I then deleted the video drivers for ATI and Intel, then restarted the computer.  It came back with the screen looking fairly normal to before it went belly up, and also had sound.  Windows then automatically reloaded the video drivers (during which time a box came up and told me the ATI driver didn't exist) and then prompted me to restart.  I did, and sound, leds, hard drive, everything came up except black screen again. Well, I repeated this several times, even went and downloaded the ATI driver off of the site, with the same result.  At that point I decided to use the computer as it was after the first restart and select "restart later" so it wouldn't go back to the black screen.  I... I have an Asus Eee PC that I got last year for my birthday. It has Windows 7 as the operating system. When I turn to computer on it seems to be working normal. When it comes time to log into a user profile and I click on the administrator profile (which is the one I use) and type in the password. The computer logs onto the profile but the screen stays completely black. I can still hear the computer running but the screen doesn't change. This has happened before but the toolbar was always visible at the bottom of the screen and now it's not. The only thing I can do with the screen black is type in Ctrl Alt and Delete to get the menu. Nothing on the menu seems to be helping with the issue.
I decided that I better see if the same thing was happening with my guest profile too. When I logged into my guest profile everything is working fine and that's what I'm on right now. However, the administrator profile has all my documents that I need for school and work so factory resetting or the possibly of wiping the computer isn't really an option.
Thank you for your time.

Hello guys,

I have a problem. It's been a few days since I've been able to load up my computer. It all started with a noisy processor fan. After continously opening the case to blow out dust from the fan blades (which seem to work for about 10-15 minutes), the noisy fan continued. I guess at this point is when I had a horrible situation turn into tragedy. I commenced to disassemble the CPU/Heatsink/fan component from the MB to see if I could get a "closer" look at the problem. It didn't seem like there was a visual problem to the unit so I "attempted" to put it back onto the MB. Note** I've never officially hooked a CPU w/Heatsink and fan assembly attached to the MB before **. I had always hooked up a "fresh" CPU onto the MB before applying the Heatsink/Fan assembly after. To me, I can fit the pins into the grooves better without the Heatsink/Fan attached. This is where my frustrations mounted. I ended up bending a few pins from trying to attach the CPU back onto the motherboard. I tried fixing the pins after browsing the internet for ways to fix them (I used the folded paper technique) which was working for awhile, but for whatever reason, one of the pins snapped from its place and that was it for me. I put the CPU aside and ordered a new one. The new one was delivered to me today. So I put the new CPU on the MB (and it was hooked up right btw) and booted up the system and BAM!! All the fans kicked on, including the CPU fan ... Read more

My computer that i own isn't working properly. Firstly, its about 4-5 years old the power button gets stuck. I've been fiddling with it from the outside to come out all the way since if it goes in all the way and doesnt come out, it keeps restarting. When i wiggle it out, it starts and goes.

Now onto my problem now. When i start up my computer, a screen pops up allowing me to press F1 for setup. if i don't click F1, my computer goes to a black screen with a _ blinking in the top right. I can't do anything from that point and when i press keys too many times, it starts beeping after i hit any key again.

Anyways if you guys could help me, I would be very thankful!

Answer:Turn on my computer, black screen

sounds like it may be time for an upgrade

have you made any hardware changes or installed new device drivers?

from what you describe it seems like the system is having some issues booting the operating system from the hard drive, or there could be another hardware fault causing the hangup... like the memory or motherboard itself. if you are able to view the POST screen upon startup (which displays all of the system information and keys to access BIOS etc...) then you may be able to boot from a CD-ROM to run repairs or possibly boot into safe mode by repeatedly striking the F8 key after the POST screen appears.

Yesterday my other compuer was running smoothly, suddenly the computer restarts by itself and what happened next is that the monitor was black screen and my hard drive LED light is lit on solid along with several irregular beeping sound. So i shut it down and turn it back on after a few minutes, and the problem is still the same it just wont boot normally as you would, one other thing that i forgot to mention is that normally two types of LED lights showing, the hdd light and the power light but my hdd LED light is showing and my power LED light isn't showing that its indicating on.

Today i try turn the computer but its the same, so i took the VGA card out and clean the fan (all fans are working fine when powering on) and also took one of my ram stick out as well as try both hard drives individually so to see which hard drive is dead.

So i would like to know what happens if your hard drive dies that would cause this sort of problem that im experiencing or that it might be the VGA card problem.
Any help would be very very appreciated. Thx in advance

So recently my computer has been crashing... well I do not know if the computer is crashing or my graphics card is..

I will be playing CODMW3 or a few other games that I own, when both my screens go black, and the sound lags... Like if any sound that was currently playing when it crashed drags on forever.... I am not sure if the computer itself is crashing because all my fans are running and lights are on... ??

I am tried MANY things to narrow down the problem, such as...
Tried using a different video card... Same thing....
Tried adjusting the amount of ram, and doing memory diag...
Checking Temps of my CPU and GPU.. both in decent ranges...

This issue is never at the same time.. I could be playing for 30 minutes before it goes, or sometimes right when i jump into the first game of the day...

I even thought this could be a windows issue, as unlikely as that was.. And re installed windows..

My specs are...

AMD Phenom II X4 840, 3.20 GHz
16GB of memory
MSI Nvidia 550 ti
Rocket Fish 5.1 Audio card

Please I would love for any insights on why this might be....

One other thing.. Maybe is related maybe not... My 700W power supply, Rocket fish aswell... Will stay "kinda" running when i shut down my computer.. Or the 120 m fan will stay running with its lights on...

Thanks for the read I hope to get some good feed back! I wish to resolve this asap!

Answer:Computer screen stays black

Do you get any signs of "life" (like the BIOS Info screen etc)
If so it's probably a driver issue (did you remove the old drivers before the switch) ?

If not, there are IMHO only 5 possibilities:
#1 The card wasn't seated properly -- reseat it
#2 The card draws more power than your PSU can handle -- get a better PSU
#3 you forgot to connect the extra power cable --connect it
#4 you bend one or more pins in the video cable -- replace
#5 The card is defective -- RMA

Hi, at first I thought this might be virus related. I went through with help from Howard_Hopkinso, and removed all virus' and malware. But my problem persists.

I have an Alienware Area 51 m7700, 120 Gig HD, 3 Gig memory, 3.8 GHz Pentium 4 HT duo processor. NVIDIA GeForce Go 6800 Ultra.

What happens is when i try and playing a source game for little while the screen goes black, sound skips, but the laptop still runs. Also happens when i click on certain internet links.

I assume that i need updated drivers, which i did. but that didn't work either.

I am lost, any help would be greatly appreciated.

Okay, so I've had this computer for a little over a year now, and things have been going fairly smoothly. However, yesterday I woke up in the morning to discover that my screen was now black. I could turn on the computer usually, I'd hear the startup as normal, but the screen just would not power on.  A quick googling suggested that I should remove the battery and power cord, hold the power button for a minute and then reconnect the power. It goes without saying that it did not work.  Any other solutions to this problem? I can provide any other details you might need.

Answer:N581 Screen Black, computer on.

Welcome to the Lenovo Community !
A few suggestions........
Do you have a flat panel monitor or TV available that you can plug into your laptop's VGA port to see if your computer will display there ?
Try opening and closing the lid several times.  Not sure if your model has a mechanical lid switch, but if so it maybe stuck.
Shine a flashlight onto the screen and see if there are faint images being displayed.  Faint images would be a indication that the invertor has failed.
