Personal Folder disappeared in desktop (NOT subfolders) in Windows 10

Question: Personal Folder disappeared in desktop (NOT subfolders) in Windows 10

This morning my personal folder (my 'Eric' folder...my name is Eric...clever, no?) disappeared from my desktop.
I've searched online all morning and all the advice's imparted are instructions to restore the SUBfolders to their default location (e.g.,documents, pictures, etc...)

That s not what I want; and they are all in their default locations anyhow

All I want is to restore the base folder Eric (or its shortcut icon actually) to my desktop.
I've had this as a default on every windows system I've ever owned

Older windows systems had a properties tab to set the desktop icons...If I could find that I'd be golden, I'd just check to restore it

But I can't find that option anywhere

Anybody know how?

thanx

eric

Preferred Solution: Personal Folder disappeared in desktop (NOT subfolders) in Windows 10

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Welcome to TenForums @ericjmz

It's in Settings > Personalisation > Themes. Scroll down and under 'Related settings' you'll find a 'desktop icons settings' link. Click that, then tick the 'user's files' box.

Got an awful shock last night. Opened word-processing program, "Open recent documents" menu came up, clicked on the recently-used document I wanted. Error message: "Document does not exist"!!!!!!

Went straight to explorer, navigated to the file through various folders and subfolders, found that not only was the one document not there, but all the other documents in that sub-folder had gone too, ditto for all other documents in all other sub-folders inside the parent folder. In short, a whole main folder and all its sub-folders and their content files had just vanished!

But a new folder was visible! It was called oddly, something like, "7i3k8gbweklvbnpfvn4d8s" !!!!

So, in the hope that my folder's name had simply been corrupted somehow, I opened this strange new folder. Empty.

Checked inside the Recycle Bin. Nothing there.

Right-clicked on the new folder to "Restore previous versions": nothing offered.

Used "System Restore" to return my computer to the state it was in five hours earlier. This no doubt restored some things, but it did not return that missing folder to me.

Did full virus and malware scans, including a boot-scan. Nothing found.

Remote Access to my computer is not enabled. (Yes, I was considering the possibility of some malicious person having possibly hacked into my computer and deliberately deleted an important folder.)

My Firewall is turned on - no incoming connections allowed.

I was mystified... Read more

Answer:Gone/Disappeared: Entire folder and subfolders!

Do you have Microsoft Security essentials installed as this likely one of the MSE update files!
The worry is these files normally gat left behind after an update and can be just deleted but why did you loose the other folder and all it's contents.
BTW you can name a folder whatever you like. The only time Windows will not reognise a title is when it contains odd characters or some symbols! My Texts would be fine just a bit difficult to pronounce

i use windows xp home and had many subfolders with 1000's of pictures in the 'my pictures' folder. since about 5 months ago i started using google's picasa for organizing and just about a 2 months ago i started using photoshop elements and photoshop 7. all interchangeably. i think this 'confused' the filing system;i noticed that elements, when i would delete an image outside of elements, would be searching for the 'missing file' and sometimes subsequently freeze.at any rate - just today i tried to access my pictures and all subfolders are gone! not accessible via explorer, picasa, nor photo elements. i tried doing dir-commands via the command line and even in the appropriate folder i do not see any of the subfolders or .jpgs. i'm devastated!thus far i have tried to restore to a 2 prior dates - with no success. can i still hope to get my pictures back!!!??? any advice will be much appreciated! thank you in advance.

Answer:Photo-subfolders Disappeared - Windows Xp Home -

Try searching for the name of a specific file using search. If the files are still on your computer, this will lead you to what folder they have been transferred to.When the search is finished. Click on Finished searching in the left panel. Then click on the name of the file, and in the left panel click on Open containing folder. Try this and post back with the results.Orange Blossom

Is there a way on Windows 7 that makes Explorer generates thumbs for folders without scrolling through them?
I tried something like a search (*.jpg) on the main folder but then only visible images had thumbs generated.

Thanks a lot.

Answer:Build thumbnails cache for a folder and subfolders in Windows 7

I have a lot of hi-res images in many folders, when I open a folder, windows explorer generates thumbnails for the images... But, because they are hi-res, it takes about 3 seconds for every image to have a thumb.
I'm looking for a way to make thumbnails for selected folders without having to open them one by one and waiting for every image, also I have to scroll down every time to get more thumbs generated

Thanks for any help.

Hi folks.

So I had to force restart my laptop when a game (...Zoo Tycoon Marine Animals) crashed and wouldn't let me close out. When I restarted my computer, I noticed that a folder on my desktop (Ironically named Folders) was gone. The other icons and folders on the desktop were still there. Here's a list of things that I have tried:

-Looked in the Recycle bin... Nothing.
-Checked the "Show Hidden" feature, and nothing changed.
-Tried using the search feature to look up both the folder itself as well as individual documents within the folder... "No results were found".
-Re-booted my laptop, to no avail.
-Went in through Word to see if I could access any of my documents that were there.... "The directory name is not valid" when I clicked on a file that had been in Folders.
-Restored my computer to a day ago, when the folder was still there... Nothing.
-Opened the cmd.exe and looked through the TREE command to see if the folder had ever existed... Got confused when a notepad file opened up and I had no clue what to do. [ ex: c:\ /a > 0 & start notepad 0 ]
-Looked at the properties on the desktop... Showed the amount of files there SHOULD be with the missing folder... But no folder.
-Attempted to use the File Restore through Windows.... which failed because I had never turned it on.
I am absolutely at my wits end... This has all of my research saved for my dissertation and my papers for graduation in December. What gives?!

Answer:Folder on Desktop disappeared- tried everything!

Try the free utility Shadow Explorer

It is similar to an undelete program in usage. Except that it gets its files from Restore Points. Just go to Desktop on a date before the folder died and see if it is listed. If so export it.

Even if it doesn't work in this instance, it is handy to have in the toolbox.

Files can't just disappear. Someone must have taken some action to make that happen.Did you change the file attributes to hidden by chance? That said, have you rebooted the computer since this incident? Did you look in the recycle bin?Try using recuva to recover the files. Get recuva at the link below.Right now you realize the value of backups. http://www.piriform.com/recuva

Hi,

Not sure where to post this as I'm not sure what caused the problem, but it's on Windows XP so I figured this would be a good place to start.

I keep a folder on my desktop that has a few hundred files, mostly Word documents and Excel spreadsheets. Today, I got home and it had vanished. There are three or four other folders (less important ones, of course) still on the desktop... they have not been affected. It seems only this one folder has disappeared. I have no idea what has happened.

It's not in the recycling bin, and I've checked the other folders on the desktop to see if it was accidentally moved. I've searched all my drives by typing in the folder name, with no luck. On the chance that the folder had been accidentally renamed, I searched for the files it contained as well. Absolutely no sign of them. The only trace of the files is in my 'Recent' folder, but when I click them I get the 'Missing shortcut' message.

I tried downloading recovery programs on the chance that it had somehow been permanently deleted, with no luck. I also tried showing hidden folders as well. Still no sign.

Since I know I was using some of the files in the folder last night, I also tried running a search of all files that had been modified in the last day, to see if I could find a clue, but this didn't turn up anything that seemed helpful.

Am I missing something? It doesn't make any sense to me how the whole folder could just vanish... Read more

What is the easiest method to delete the entire "windows.old" folder AND all of its sub-folders? This action will give me a lot more space.William Lockie

Answer:I need to DELETE a folder and all subfolders

Highlight the folder by single-clicking it. Hold down SHIFT and press DELETE. When it prompts you about "Are you sure you want to permanently delete this folder?", answer yes. If there are hidden or system files that you're sure you don't need, it may prompt you when it reaches them each time; also answer yes to these..."Channeling the spirit of jboy..."

Hello,

Sorry if such a question has been posted before. I couldn't find it.

I don't know how, but suddenly when I double click in a folder inside of a drive folder, the drive folder in the left pane also opens and shows all subfolders.
It wasn't like that before and I tried but could not find a way to restore the original behavior.

Thanks for your help!

Answer:Drive folder - subfolders

I believe you are talking about the Automatically Expand to current folder option which can be found in:

Navigation Pane - Automatically expand to current folder

Control Panel > Folder Options

In the general Tab there is the option "Automatically Expand to current folder"

Is this checked? If so uncheck it.

I just built an XP box to be the "media computer", and I have an external hard drive that I'd like to share with that computer. So far, I haven't had a problem with sharing the drive itself, but I can't get into any of the subfolders from the other computer.
I don't really care how the files get shared so long as it's easy (like barely computer literate easy) to access all the files, folders, and subfolders on my exHD on the other computer.
I've already tried mapping the network drive, I've also tried using the Share... option, but again, can't get to the subfolders in either case.
Help me out, internet people! Any suggestions are welcome.

Here's the copy paste of my conversation on yahoo answers

What I want to do, basically, is add information (artist, album, year, genre, etc.) to a bunch of mp3's that are in the same folder, including all mp3's contained in its subfolders.

Let me explain.
I used to use winamp to play my mp3's. So i organized my mp3's in folders by genre (i have a metal folder, a hardcore/punk folder, a rap folder, etc.) and i would just drag the folder in winamp. Now I've started to use WMP11 since it's compatible with my sony mp3 player, and I need to add a bunch of information to my mp3's.
I'll give you two examples of what I want to do. I have the Sepultura discography on my computer, in a folder named "Sepultura", and then in subfolders containing each albums. I would like all the files in the folder and its subfolders to have "sepultura" instead of "unknown artist" in the "artist" field.

But more importantly, the genres are all mixed up. I'd like to tag all mp3's in my metal folder as "metal" in one click. Is there any program that can do that, or any way to do it with WMP11 ?
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Hi there. Have been working with Build 10074 for several days. Just realized yesterday that my main user folder has duplicate sub-folders (2 Documents, 2 Music, 2 Videos, 2 Downloads, 2 Pictures). They are the same size, have the same properties). Whichever one I delete, makes the other one unusable, where there is an error message like it doesn't exist. Is this a Registry problem? Now I am dual-booting on this particular installation with Windows 7. When I boot into Win7 and access that User folder, it only shows SINGLE entries, no evil twin. Strange? What can I do? I have thought of creating a new user, moving my files into those new sub-folders, then deleting the original user. However, the main user with the duplication is a Microsoft account as opposed to a local account. So that complicates everything. Thanks in advance for your tips.

Answer:Duplicate subfolders in User folder

Hello gallicbear,

If you like, you can see if using OPTION TWO in the tutorial below to restore the default location of the affected user folders may sort this for you. Afterwards, you should be able to delete the duplicate folders that do not have a "Location" tab in their properties page to remove them for good.

I am trying to write a batch file that will rename part of a folder name together with the sub folders... this is for creating a new project based on an empty folder tree structure.
example:
0000_Project_Name\0000_Correspondence\0000_Final
\0000_Presentation \0000_movies

I would like my batch to rename all instances of 0000 in any folder names + replace "Project_Name" with the real name at the moment of creation. (I am creating my New Project folder copied from a template blank structure)

first part works

: projectcreate
xcopy "C:\Documents and Settings\...\Desktop\Project_Template" D:\TESTING_BATCH\ /e/k

: projectcreateend

I have no clue how to go on from here...
Many Thanks,

I've seen that if I modify something that is in the parent folder, the 'date modified' of the parent folder will change. But if I modify something that is inside a directory inside the parent folder, the 'date modified' of the parent folder won't change.
Knowing this, is it possible to find the latest 'date modified' in a whole directory (including all of its subdirectories?)

How do you permanenly delete the subfolders in the Public Folder? I can delete the Public Pictures, Public Videos, etc., but they are recreated on bootup. I was able to do this on my other PC, but can't recall how I did it.

Answer:How to Delete Subfolders from Public Folder

Hello Scnrfrq,

These are system files and are needed for sharing purpose between user accounts. You should NOT delete them. Doing so may also cause other unknown issues to arrise.

As a workaround, you could just hide the folders them if you do not wish to see them. They do not take up enough space to worry about.

Hope this helps,

So basically I was wondering if anyone could help me write a script doesn't matter if it's in the CMD or powershell but what I need to do is add two folders with sub folders to existing client folders with in an existing folder structure with working files from over 10,000 clients.

The basic folder structure looks like:
F:\A\ClientName\
F:\B\ClientName\
and so on
Then a bunch of sub folders as per screenshot (Note in screenshot I wasn't using a networked drive as I am testing on my personal laptop)
So what I need to add to the first folder ("ASIC - Company Secretarial") in every client from A-Z is two subfolders with folders with in them eg

Company Register
Company Register\Asic
Company Register\Misc

Trust Register
Trust Register\Asic
Trust Register\Misc
That is just an example but I will be given the sub folders to be added very soon.

So is there a way to write a script which will go through to every folder and sub folder to add the new folders?
It would take a very long time to do it manually as they have in excess of 10,000 clients.

The folder structure is set up for their current software management system, from what I can gather it was custom written but works well to set up a new client folder, so new clients isn't an issue.

All I need is to add the folders and sub folders to existing clients in the sub folders.

Does anyone have software or help writing a script to insert all the new folders.

Can you tell me how can I delete all files from a folder and its subfolders in windows 7. While deleting I don't want to delete subfolders, just files.

The second thing that is important: I don't want to do it manually, but automatically. All files at once. I have large folders with many subfolders, and it would take long if I performed the task manually.

Thanks for help,
LOR

Hello, i wonder if there is a way to apply specific folder settings to all subfolders without having to go through each one individually. Specifically i would like to know how to display the bit rate field in all subfolders of my music folder. I hope theres a way to do this and that someone out there is kind enough to share how it's done. Thanks in advance porps

Hello Porps,

You could use the tutorial below to apply folder views to all folders that have the same folder template (ex: Music) to do so.

Hello,
In Windows XP it was possible to add links in a
subfolder in the SendTo folder.
The effect would be that you can right click a file, select the SendTo menu and you would see a list of links including your subfolder which again showed a submenu.
eg:
Send To > Mail Recepient
                 Desktop
                 Notepad

MySubFolder > Hex Editor

File Checker
                 Wordpad
                 Fax
How can this be done in Vista and Win7?
Apparently when one creates a subfolder in the SendTo folder, only the subfolder's name will be shown and
not the actual contents.
Are there any registry settings to enable this? Additions to the desktop.ini?
Something to change in the .lnk files? Other windows settings I missed?
Is it possible doing this with an API? Maybe with a junction point or ... Read more

For some reason, once my games folder just deleted all using permissions to all users, but I could sort it out by simply taking the access. But now I have a problem: There are tons of subfolders, and they didn't get that I am the owner, and I must change all of them one by one to take full control. Is there some way to do this automatically?

Answer:Taking control of a folder and subfolders

What version of Windows are you using? In Windows 7, go back to the ownership interface and tick the "replace owner on subfolders and objects" and reapply the ownership again.

In WinXP I can right-click on a folder, select "search", then "search" without entering anything into any of the boxes. The result is a list of all the subfolders and files subordinate to the searched folder.

I often separate my digital images for various reasons...numbering/naming...keywords...etc This can result in numerous folders & subfolders. Upon completion, I usually want to extract/return/move all the files to a single folder again.

This method does not work in Win7. Any suggestions?

Answer:Solved: Extracting all files in folder & subfolders

Highlight the folder and then type *.* into the search box. I think just * will do it also.

Hi and thanks for any help. I hope someone knows this. Yesterday I made an account on the alesis website for support for a mixer. It asked me if I wanted to make an avatar so I clicked on upload a picture and I saw this screen here my pictures.jpg as you can see that is what me picture folder normally looks like inside except the greyed out folders would appear normally. Anyway that kept me uploading. the pic I wanted as it was in one of the non accessible folders. That was a bummer but no big deal, I have seen youtube and some other upload things like that do that. HOWEVER the real bummer is now when I am just here now not online and I go to my picture folder then the only files or folders visible are the few that were not greyed out in the first pic I posted and now looks like this my pictures now.jpg The end result is now all of those pictures in my subfolders in the first pic I posted are no longer accessible in any way. Any advice or ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

What happens is that if I delete or move a folder that contains many subfolders, leaving a window that says preparing to copy, and after a while everything is in blue, post some letters and the computer shuts down.

My Windows updated on Monday and it removed all my view settings for my libraries. For example, Pictures used to be medium icons, sorted by date modified, and grouped by nothing. I changed it back to that, but every single subfolder is still set to the default.

I tried going to the folder settings, view, and clicking "apply to folders", but the button is grayed out. I then deleted all Bags/BagsMRU registry entries in hope of fixing it, but no dice.

I don't remember having to do anything special for this back when I got Windows 10, so I think something got messed up in this update for me.

Please note that I can use "apply to folders" when I'm outside of my library and it works fine. I successfully applied the correct settings to entire folder trees, but it doesn't work for the libraries.

Hi there,

I bought a 70gb Solid State Drive for my C drive, and unfortunately now it's filling up.

Currently I cannot remove any programs (I'll be installing my Adobe Suite somewhere else in future).

I'd like to relocate some of the Users folder subfolders such as:

C:\Users\Robin\AppData\Local

C:\Users\Robin\AppData\Roaming

To another drive.

When I try to Move then Apply with the properties dialog, in both cases there are files which "cannot be found" or are "already in use". In the cases they seem to be either SecureRom files with weird filenames which windows cannot copy, or UserDat.dat files.

I take it I'd need to try to find out what programs these are linked with, uninstall them, and reinstall them after the move. Is this my only option? Currently I don't know what program they are linked with unfortunately, and don't know how to find out.

Best wishes

Robin Brinkler

Answer:Can't relocate Users folder subfolders due to SecureRom

I don't think move that folders is a good idea.

Is better just move the data of the users to the other drive not the system folders.

I mean, for example, you can change the Drive letter for "My Documents" to other drive and is easiest way.

Take care moving folders of the system you could broke your Windows.

Hi, is there a way to set a folders options like viewing icons and having all the subfolders inherit those settings? I know I can go to organize, folder and search options, view and then apply to folders...but I don't want ALL folders with this view, just this folder and subfolders.

Answer:Changing folder view settings to subfolders only?

You can right-click on the main folder and chose (Properties_Customize)_Optimize this folder for": Chose between the five options...Also check the (Apply this template to all subfolders).

This will change just that one folder and all other subfolders.

I've seen this problem posted on here with variations on the problem I'm having, but none of them have any replies, I'm hoping someone has come up with a solution though!

I'm running Vista Home Premium and it has created 2 Documents folders - both of which have up to 20 copies of the Documents folders as subfolders of each other (so the directory reads documents/documents/documents/documents etc). I can delete the subfolders up to the top one but whenever I try to delete one of the 2 base folders, it disappears for a second then re-appears with another 20 subfolders. It also sometimes ends in desktop/desktop/desktop, and even when I've checked that the folders contain nothing else, when I have deleted them I have lost some data. I've now lost most of the folders I copied on to my computer, and am very frustrated!

If no-one knows any solution to this problem please advise as if I cannot solve it I will look into getting a downgrade to XP!

Many thanks

Answer:Documents folder replication within itself (20+ subfolders within 2 folders)

Hi:
On my F: drive, I have a folder called Local Music. It is exactly what it says it is, ALL the music I own. Unfortuately, over the years I have not kept up on the maintenance of the folder. I have, in the past for 10 years or more, used Windows Media Player with the "Delete Files from Computer When I Delete Them From Library" option checked. For some reason, Microsoft didn't design this function to delete the corresponding folders when the music files are deleted. What makes it worse, MUCH worse is that it leaves the cover art and thumbs files in the otherwise empty folders so your standard delete empty folders utility won't help me. I'm wondering if anyone knows of a Freeware utility which allows for the writing of a Boolean sentence that might solves this. Such as IF the innermost subfolder(s) DO NOT contain music files THEN delete them or something like that. I am running Win XP Professional (SP 3).

In Windows Explorer, all my folders are set up to display files in Detail view.  For a few folders, which are full of subfolders, I want to change this to thumbnail view -- without changing each subfolder manually.

I have tried to fixes proposed online -- customizing the folder properties and checking the "apply to subfolders" box; turning off "Remember folder settings" in the Folder Options menu first, or in between.  None of this seems works for me.  If the "Remember' box is  unchecked, then, the customization of one folder (and its subfolders) actually affects the whole drive.

Is it possible to do what I want in Win XP?

I have a new machine running Vista 64 home. I'm trying to tranfer files from my previous machine (also Vista64) by taking the files from the backup external drive that was connected to the previous machine.

I took the USB line off the old and connected to the new, and opened the external drive using explorer. I opened another explorer window and viewed the hard drive directory on the new machine that I intend to be the destination directory for the files from the external drive.

I can drag & drop a single file from external to internal drive.
I can drag & drop a folder.

Problem is, I cannot drag and drop a folder that contains a subfolder. I want to drag and drop my entire "documents" directory with tons of subdirectory.

When I attempt to drag & drop a folder that includes subfolders, the "+" appears when I hover over the destination explorer window, as if it is an acceptable operation. When I release the mouse, nothing happens and there is no error message.

Might be a permissions issue. could you right-click one of the problem file/folder and goto security tab to see who the owner is? Even if it is you, its the you from the old system so you might need to add your current user to the dirve.

Hope this helps

Here at work, we have a folder share which contains user data. The parent "Users" share is visible to everyone and anyone can list the contents of the folder. However, each subfolder has specific permissions so that only the user in question can view the contents of all folders within. I need to add a security group to all of these folders with full access rights, without changing the individualized security settings of each subfolder to that of the parent folder.

At first I was messing around with a powershell scripts. However, all the scripts I can find rely on inheritance of the sub folders to be enabled, which is neither possible nor desirable.

Has anyone found a solution to this problem? I know I'm not the only one but I'm not having much luck finding a solution on Google.

Answer:Add security group to folder and subfolders, without using inheritance

Your in for a world of a mess. There is not an actual easy way to do this AFTER the fact.

Is this for home folders or folder redirection?

If its folder redirection, the cleanest way to do this is move it to a new location with the proper permissions setup at the root share.

So i decided i would recover the laptop, but first wanted to get her data off the HDD. I have the HDD out and can get everything off of it, except her personal folder where all her documents are stored.

Is there any way for me to gain access to this folder or will i have to run HDD file recovery software to get the data off?
Thanks for all help,

I've been reading up on applying Folder View settings to either All Folders or all folders of the same type, but neither of those is quite what I'm looking for.

Specifically, I'd like to write my own utility that reads the folder view settings for any given folder (I assume from the registry), and give that view a name. Then I'd like my program to be able to apply any of my newly named views to any other folder. I particularly want to add an "Apply to Subfolders" feature to this utility.

I'm not looking to distribute this; just for my own personal OCD satisfaction, so I don't mind if it ends up being a kludgy solution.

To that end, I have only two questions, really:

Let's say I have a folder under my documents named "Test" with a bunch of random files of all types in it: Some pictures, some video, some audio, and a bunch of text files. Let's further say I customize the folder view settings for this one folder to be like old-school DOS: Details view showing FileName, Size, Type, Date Modified. Plus I set up the column widths to be "just so."

Windows remembers my settings for this one folder. If I can find them, and read/write them, I can realize my dream of managing my own folder views.

So question #1 is: Where are one-off custom folder view settings stored?

I believe Windows inexplicably holds two different view settings for any given folder under a special folder. For example, If I open "Documents" from the start menu and open t... Read more

Answer:Applying custom Folder View settings to subfolders

Initial research:

Folder View Settings - Back Up and Restore in Windows offers a BAT file for backing up and restoring your folder settings. The backup portion of this BAT file saves the following registry entries:

Code:
HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Shell\BagMRU
HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Shell\Bags
HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\ShellNoRoam\Bags
HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\ShellNoRoam\BagMRU
HKCU\Software\Classes\Local Settings\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Shell\BagMRU
HKCU\Software\Classes\Local Settings\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Shell\Bags

From looking at my own registry, the list of individual custom folder views appears to be in:
HKCU\Software\Classes\Local Settings\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Shell\Bags

BagMRU is a nice unique search term, which uncovers Explaining the Bags/BagMRU registry tree (trying), which in turn links to the following utility:

ShellBagsView v1.16

That doesn't appear to have been updated for Windows 10, but 10 seems to use the same setup as Windows 7. Running it on my machine, I do indeed get a list of all my individual folder settings.

Clearly this is possible. I just need to sit down and fiddle with it.

This is for Win 7, not XP.

I deal with lots of photos in hundreds of subfolders in a directory. What I want to do is have the image icons in the subfolders show a large thumbnail of the image instead of the usual same jpeg icon. I figured out how to customize a single folder. Here's what I had to do:

Go to Computer > C: > User > ... etc., and drill down to one folder in the directory with all the image folders. Open that one folder, change it from "List" to "Large icon" -- and also make the appropriate change under Organize > Folder and search options so the large icons would show image thumbnails. (For reasons I don't understand, it doesn't work if I just open the folder. I have to navigate to it by way of Computer > C: > User ... etc.)

Now, here's the problem I'm trying to solve: How can I apply those settings to ALL of the subfolders in that directory. I want the change to affect only those subfolders, not the directory in which they reside. I know I could do it as described above, one folder at a time, but there are more than 100 subfolders, so that approach isn't practical.

Many gold stars to anyone who can tell me how to apply those settings globally to subfolders within a single directory.

I was moving about 450gb of music from my old external (which was almost completely out of space, 465gb) to an internal 1tb drive. I was installing/setting up a program, thinking 'no way this will affect the file transfer', when suddenly that program gave an error (can give specifics on this if needed). Immediately after, my files stopped moving. It said 'delayed write failed, data has been lost' or something like that. I looked on my external, and it was empty. At this point i was rather upset because i thought i had lost years worth of music.

Since I thought i had lost all my data, i tried one of those recovery programs ("diskdigger") And it couldn't even access the drive. Gave an error, then showed it as 0gb. But the drive properties still showed 300+ gb even though the only folder in it was shown as empty.

So, i did the classic windows fix-all, restarted. My computer would not even go past the motherboard boot screen for 5 minutes. At this point i was about to jump out the window, but i restarted again and it worked. I went to my external, all my folders were there, i could open all the subfolders, play the music with vlc, etc.

BUT now when i try to move the folder with all my music, it says "Cannot move file: Cannot read from source file or disk"

That is my problem. Any ideas?

I have confusion and perplexity over the optimal folder structure for Windows 7. I make it a standard practice to put My Documents on a separate drive.

Win7 allows you to move the personal folders to a new location, but in both installs where I've tried this using the documented procedures, the Documents folder disappeared and I had to reinstall Windows. So the personal folders stay where they are.

What to do? Use libraries! I decided to put a folder called My Document Center on D: and make it the default for the Documents Library. That should fix the problem, I thought. It hasn't.C:\Users\UserName\Documents appears in the Documents library. That's fine. I expect it. This seems to be the personal folder. I'd expect it to have nothing in it. But it does have quite a bit of stuff, it seems from program installs. That's not fine. I guess programs put stuff there because they don't use the library.
Start Menu | UserName takes me to a window that has a "My Documents" folder and a shortcut to a "My Documents" folder, but the shortcut seems to be useless since it tells me I don't have permission to access it, though it indicates I could probably do so through the security tab. That makes me wonder if it is a virtual folder of some sort, though. I'm not sure what its purpose is other than to create confusion.
Question 1: Is there a way to redirect all the stuff that's going into the personal Documents folder?

Question 2: Have you found a better alternati... Read more

Answer:Optimal Personal Folder Structure for Windows 7

I'm sure there is more than one way to skin a cat, but I don't use libraries.

Nor have I ever used the default Microsoft "my documents" or "C:\users" folders.

My OS is on C:

I have a D: data partition and simply have a series of folders on it. I save directly to these folders:

Computer

MP3

Downloads

Pictures

etc, whatever names best apply. I have a total of 8 major folders, with many subfolders under each.

Libraries are just a distraction to me, as is the entire "C:\users" thing. I just sidestep it.

Preliminary investigation with a Knoppix disk shows that most of the hard drive is intact; unfortunately, though, for some unknown reason, the entire Windows folder has disappeared. There are no strange noises or other indications that the drive is failing, and the other files on the drive seem to be undamaged.

I did some looking on the Internet for NTFS undelete utilities, but all the programs I found are apparently geared more toward recovery of documents rather than restoration of folders. There's really nothing on this machine in terms of data that I need to recover, but it did come with several programs that I don't have install disks for, and I'd like to continue to have access to them, if possible. What would be the best way to proceed with restoration on this machine?

Answer:Windows folder disappeared!

Could you please explain what "it stopped working for me" means? Whether it can be fixed depends on the symptoms you provide. Also, does your relative have the Vista installation discs?

A few days ago I was using the computer when I got a BSOD which told me to restart if this is the first time I got this error so I restarted and everything went back to normal. I don't know if this is related to the problem I have now.

Today I accidentally disconnected the computer from electricity and when I started it again I got an error message which said that the "<windows root>\system 32\hal.dll" file is missing or corrupted. I restarted the computer and got the same error again. I put the windows installation cd in the cd drive and chose Repair but it didn't ask me to choose a windows installation to fix and when I tried to find the hal.dll file in the windows folder using the command prompt I discovered that the entire WINDOWS folder was missing from the C: drive. (also, when I tried the "cd" command I got "Access is denied" and all the drive letters were different but I'm not sure this is relevant) I also used chkdsk on the c: drive with no change.

I decided to install windows on another drive to try and recover the windows folder from explorer but when I ran the file recovery program on the windows drive I found that some files from the windows folder (which no longer exists so the recovery program refers to as "?") were overwritten by files I downloaded during the last 3 days and their size was ~150 MB so I think maybe these were only temp files. I thought maybe I accidentally moved the windows folder w... Read more

Hi, on my desktop, I can doubleclick open a folder (like My Documents), but when I want to go to a subfolder such as My Pictures, I can only highlight it. It will not doubleclick open. Luckily I did find I could still open the file by doing File, Open.

I have gone through all of the desktop screens and made sure it was on doubleclick. I have restarted a bunch of times. I tried Dell's support but they weren't helpful as usual. They asked me to do Cont/Alt/tap D, which didn't solve anything.

One more bit of info that may be related. I had an alert from McAfee on the same day this all happened saying it had quaranteed a Furootkit virus. On the same day my ActiveX feature stopped working, but I was able to get that to work again by lowering my security levels.

I have run the virus scan and spyware scan on my computer and cleaned it up. For whatever reason, this Windows 2000 that I have has never been able to do a restore to previous good system like the XP I have downstairs and it won't let me do a check C drive for errors. Thanks for any help anyone can give me. Jane

Answer:Cannot open subfolders on desktop

Hiya and welcome

Are you still having these problems? If so, go to http://forum.aumha.org/downloads/hijackthis.zip , and download 'Hijack This!'.
Unzip, doubleclick HijackThis.exe, and hit "Scan".

When the scan is finished, the "Scan" button will change into a "Save Log" button.
Press that, save the log somewhere, and please copy & paste its contents to the forum.

It will possibly show other issues deserving our attention, but most of what it lists will be harmless or even required, so do NOT fix anything yet.
Someone here will be happy to help you analyze the results.

Also, its not advisable to lower the security settings, as that will leave you open to many more problems. The best setting for normal use is Medium.

I've been trying for a while to figure out permissions with no luck. Probably haven't googled the right questions, but I'm hoping you can help me.

My case is this. After installing Windows 7, I for some reason managed to delete a parent folder which was too big for the Recycle Bin and therefore I lost it. I'm trying to make sure this won't happen again, but still maintain full control of all subfolders and files (which I want to be able to delete). I'm sure it's easy, but it's driving me nuts. Also hoping I can do everything from the parent folder as there are a lot of subfolders.

I've deleted all the default permissions and added my own user name in Security: Group or user names. Then in Advanced permissions, I've tried a few different things I thought would work. For instance: Allow Full control for this folder, subfolders and files. Then: Replace all child object permissions from this object. Then I add a Deny Delete for This folder only. I suppose you can't Delete and Allow at the same time, but was hoping Deny would override it.

Any suggestions would be much appreciated. Thanks!

You'll have to define the permissions for child folders seperately so that they do not inherit permission settings from their parent folder.

It's just easier to use normal default permissions, and then remember to be more carefull when deleting files and folders...

desktop shortcut has disappeared. opened settings > system > apps & features. found the application listed. tried to drag to desktop or click to open or move but the only thing that happened was an uninstall option was shown. went to start bar, opened "all apps" and scrolled though listings but the application was not listed.
took the laptop to the local Geek Squad. they could not access the app either. they downloaded the app again. it showed under "apps & features" but not in "all apps". they were stumped and said they would do some research, the tech said he was familiar with windows 10
the two most important applications that can't be accessed are Garmin Express and Netgear's push2tv . other than this issue windows 10 appears to be operating fine

For some unknown reason ALL of my desktop folders - and subfolders have changed the view to just icons - no toolbar or web address bar at the top! I have tried everything - and our local tech person did too - but nothing will change this view! Properties, customize folder view, folders in control panels, etc., the view *looks* like it is correct when you try to customize it (even before doing anything), but when you click apply/ok, it is still just the icons with no toolbar at the top.

Help! I have absolutely no idea what caused this - this PC is only about 3 weeks old and was running fine and then all of a sudden this happened.

Thanks,

hi all

My folder customizations have disappeared, they used to show the front cover of a music album (one folder per album) Inside, the subfolders, (disc1, disc2 etc) used to show the files (these individual files were again showing the album cover, changed using an MP3 tag editor.) These have also disappeared.

With over 10,000 albums all anally ordered and looking cool, i'm hoping that it's nothing to serious!

i first noticed this problem after removing my sata HDD (pc was shut down), oddly though, some other folders still show the pics, but not the important ones :-/

any help would be appreciated

Answer:Windows 7; Folder customizations have disappeared

Uh, hate to ask the obvious, but was the SATA HDD returned to the system?

What program is showing these album covers?

Sounds like the HDD removed had all the data for them on it.

Here's a general description of my problem:

All of my pictures, music and documents have disappeared. So have my IE (latest version) favorites. When I run (name deleted but it's a popular program available on download.com) file recovery, everything is there. Furthermore, all folders are still there but the files that should be inside are just gone or at least not showing up. 'My Computer' says that my HD is almost empty although it should be almost full.

I always have AVG running. I've run Windows Defender and it says that my computer has no problems. Housecall couldn't find anything. I have all of the Windows Updates installed (although they weren't before the problem started because I get sick of the constant Update popups.)

Here is the requested info:

- Fujitsu laptop with Vista Home Premium and all available updates.

OPERATING SYSTEM (OS):

No recent crashes. I had installed the HP printer package just days before the problem started. As I was uninstalling the individual programs from the HP suite because the web printing program took control of my system every time I tried viewing a web page, I heard the HD working overtime and was worried that it was deleting stuff and it looks like it was. This seems to be the most likely problem. I went back in and reinstalled the suite (minus web printing) but that didn't help.

thare may be something wrong whit the indexing system of the harddrive, i dont know maybe you could boot form a linux live cd (its a cd of wich you can run a linux os without instaling in to the harddrive) to check if it can 'see' the files (to make sure if it's a windows issu or a harddrive issu) and backup them in the linux so you don't lose anything and if you can retreve the files with a file recovery tool than backup your files that way
if it's a virus that removed all of the files form the index they are stil thare so try not to save anythnig becouse you wont be able to recover them if they have an other file saved over them... maybe you should try something else as avg to scan for the viruses... or backup the files and reinstall the wondows
if thath doesnt help backup the files and try replacing the harddrive

After that update, my Outlook email icon is no longer there and now I can't find where all my email messages and folders have gone to. Hello

This has happened once before and I can't remember how I stumbled on the solution but I did. I have many named folders where I store emails I want to keep one of them being "business". I was going to drag an email into it when i noticed that it was missing but other folders are still there. Any suggestions much appreciated. Thanks

Answer:Windows Live Mail storage folder disappeared

Hi,

To restore these storage folders, simply choose to unhide them from the Windows Live Mail layout options.

Use the Alt-M key combination to bring up a small drop down menu.
Select ?Layout?.
Choose ?Folder pane? and put a check mark in front of ?Show Storage folders?.
The disappeared / missing storage folders will be restored in the Windows Live Mail program.

This is regarding acmputer I was working on running Windows 7.

I was trying to create two accounts, one for one person, the other for two.

I found out that for some reason the exact same folder and file brought up different information on another account, making it impossible for me to set two accounts up until I read up on the subject.

So I delete the new account I had added, but told it to keep the files. Then I took the folder that had the files from the account and put that in the Windows/Users folder. Then I opened said folder, and discovered an important folder had gone missing.

It is not in the Recycle Bin and I did not select to delete it. Obviously the best approach is to use a Windows XP disc or thumbdrive based OS, copy the entire contents of a hard drive onto some massive exterior hard drive, so that I can never loose anything like this, because apparently folders and files are going to go missing in Windows 7.

Well I know what to do next time. What I do not know is how to recover the missing information. Do I need some outside program, or is there a way in Windows to do this? Not system back up or savepoints or any of that garbage either. I never run that Windows backup stuff, and I have it turned off on this computer.

How do I recover this missing folder, and any other missing stuff from when the account, but not teh files, were deleted? Links to tutorials, especially video, much appreciated.

Answer:Deleted account but kept files, folder disappeared, Windows 7

That "garbage" would have come in handy here. You can try something like Recuva or GetDataBack and see if you can locate the missing data.

I had a crash and the operating system had to be restored non-destructively. The backup operation saved the Microsoft Outlook .pst file. I have now recovered all the e-mails but the Contacts folder is "empty" when looking for an address. The Contacts folder (as well as the Calendar folder) also does not appear in the list of folders in the Navigation Pane. If I attempt to export a comma separated file (DOS) from the Personal Folders, the "Contacts" folder appears in the window when browsing for the folder to export. If I export that file, all the contacts are there complete with all the addresses when viewed as an Excel file. Any suggestions on how to integrate the contacts into the Personal folder without having to recreate a contact file manually from the Excel file? Cheers, Wondering Willy

I have Outlook 2002.  I keep a LOT of data in the SAVED folder.  The SAVED folder appears to be at the same "level" as my INBOX.  I've managed to find the .pst folder by right clicking on the INBOX folder, but I'm not sure that this file contains all of my SAVED information as well.  Is there a different extension for the SAVED data?  How can I find out what's actually getting saved to the .pst file? I can't get the location of the SAVED file by right clicking, like I can with the INBOX folder....Additionally, I've tried to do a search for the pab folder (adderess info), but can't seem to locate that. Please help me!  Jerolyn

Answer:Outlook Backup: Personal folder, Calendare and SAVED folder

I also have Outlook 2002 and show no "Saved" folder at all.  This must be a folder that someone created.  "How can I find out what's actually getting saved to the .pst file?"  You can't just by looking at it.  When you do an export which creates the .pst file, you have many options to save all or particular things.  What I would do is export the whole enchilada, then install Outlook on another machine, do an import and see if all is there.  It should be.Alan <><

Answer:Outlook Personal Address Book Disappeared!

Hi, It may still be in the Deleted items folder; take a look in that and it may be restoreable if there.
You could have emptied the Deleted Items folder already, so it may not be there or even have been there, but usually all deleted emails go there, and I would think entire folder contents would too.
You can easily re-create a new personal folder in the AB, and manually reenter the items, too, if you have them in the AB....

Hiyas, I'm aware that I more times changed ownership of my Windows 8 profile folder (incl. subtree). Currently it's set to (Windows 8)SYSTEM. By looking at other account profile folders I suppose it's right and access rights should be set to profile user (full control), Administrtators group (full control) and SYSTEM (full as well).
Out from Windows 8.1 I look at my profile folder security attributes, it shows permissions for me (full) and SYSTEM (full). Everything looks normal until I boot to Windows 10, my profile folder is not accessible, security dialog says owner neither permissions can't be viewed. Setting the owner to SYSTEM from out of Windows 10 fails (access denied) but I can set the owner to my W10 account (same name and password). The problem is that I can't then login in Windows 8 to my profile (profile folder can't see the owner).
How do I normalize or reset my profilefolder rights so that it can be accessed from both Windows 8 and 10 just like any other folder on Windows 8 drive? (It seems that all other folders can view onership and permissions from both systems as well as I can see/access Windows 10 profile older out of Windows 8).

Answer:saved emails folder disappeared from windows live mail

It may have become hidden somehow. To "unhide" it, read this:http://www.webdevelopersnotes.com/b...If that is not the issue, you should really keep a regular backup of your email, whatever email client you use. For instructions on backing up in WLM, go here:http://www.emailquestions.com/windo...If you don't bother with backing up you will lose everything when the hard drive fails (and all hard drives fail eventually).

Hello Everyone,After installing Windows 7, I was able to select and run desktop gadgets on my desktop. After few days, or I should say that after few reboots, the desktop gadgets disappeared. Now, when I right click on the desktop and click on gadgets, nothing comes up. I also tried to open desktop gadgets from start menu, run command, and accessaries, but nothing works. I did a clean install of Windows 7, did someone else have the same problem? Any solution?

Answer:Windows 7 Desktop Gadgets disappeared

When upgrading from Vista to Windows 7 your gadget bar comes over and installs instead of the Windows 7 gadgets. (or sometimes the folder data gets courupted by something so same fix works) So when you install a new gadget ... it doesn't seem to stick! The reason for this is the Gadget bar is taking precedence and the Gadgets you are adding don't go there. To fix this you need to delete your settings in your users app section.
For example if your user name is "Jon" then go to C:\Users\Jon\AppData\Local\Microsoft\
Then delete the folder called "Windows Sidebar" (close your gadgets, then cut and past the original elsewhere or rename this to test it if you like)
This will delete your users gadget settings so when you go to use a gadget it will reset the folder and settings.
